Solve : Unable to Load Personal Settings?

Answer»

I have an OLD Dell notebook (Inspiron 700m) with an Intel Celeron PROCESSOR that is running Windows XP. We have other laptops in the house and this one is not used, but I now need access to it for some old documents.

It starts XP and loads the usual welcome page, with the list of users. Clicking on a user then leads to the computer TRYING to load personal settings. I get a brief flash of the desktop and then it advises that it is logging out and saving personal settings. I am then back at the welcome page with the list of users. All user accounts have been tried and they all react the same way.

I have tried to access through various options in SAFE mode, but cannot get past this problem. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Given that the machine is no longer in active use I don't want to spend much to take it in for troubleshooting.

Thanks.Can you try safe mode?

Yes, I have tried safe mode through all of the options I could, but they all put me to the same welcome screen.I had this problem before. I cant remember exactly what I did but it was something similar to the answer found here http://www.compatdb.org/support/topics/139521_windows_xp_will_no_got_to_desktop_from_welcome_screen.html
Try this, usually works. The problem is to with some spyware, and when removed (by adaware) causes the behaviour you guys are describing.

First off, boot your computer from your Windows XP restore cd/OS cd, when the menu comes up hit the R key to get to the recovery prompt.

The prompt should start off at C:\Windows.
Type cd system32 The prompt should now read C:\Windows\system32

Type: COPY userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe
Reboot

Im no expert so you might want to wait on someone with more experience to help you.

Solve : WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM?

Answer»

I have an eMachine T3265 with a 3200+ AMD Athlon Processor.
I am trying to get my computer to boot but it will not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
It will not allow me to start the computer in safe mode. When I try this, it continually tries to boot every few minutes. The computer will open the BIOS and CMOS setup. I have an operating system disc, but the computer will not open it when i put the disc in the drive. How can I remedy this situation?

THANKS!!!
CriticbruChange the boot order in bios and put the cd at the top of the list. Then:

Boot to the XP CD and SELECT R (RECOVERY Console)

At the command prompt type:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\system system.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config

RebootAllan,
I have the CDROM as the first boot device. The computer will not allow me to get to any command prompt. You need to be more specific. Exactly what happens? When the computer tries to boot, it maintains a black screen for a few minutes. Eventually there will be a progress bar of white BARS along the bottom. At that point it will say there is a file missing or corrupt. It does this with the disc in and the disc out. Nothing changes when the disc is put in.Then you are not booting to the CD. EITHER the cd drive is not first in the boot order or the cd drive is not working or the cd is not an original, bootable XP CD. There are no other possibilities. The drive is first in the boot order. I am getting a disc read error every once in a while. The disc is an original. Any way to test the drive at this point without the use of a command prompt because the light will come on when the disc is inserted and then goes off again? Any quick fix to that? You can try a different bootable disc to see if that works, but without getting into the system I'm not sure how to test the drive. And I apologize, in my post above I should have said "the disc is bad or is not an original, bootable XP CD". In other words, either the cd or the cd drive is bad.

Solve : Trouble syncing ipod to music library?

Answer»

Have developed rather LARGE music library which has been working WELL until I recently downloaded a cd and it would not play on ipod but would play on computer. Message SAID that I needed to "restore" my ipod, so I did. Loosing all songs from ipod then it would restore to original, re syncing to reload ipod. Can not get it to complete LOADING. GETS about 1/3 through, stops, saying an error has occurred. Says files need to be reconfigured? Any suggestions?

Solve : I restored my computer but two new problems arose...?

Answer»

I RESTORED my computer using a "non-destructive restore" and I still have most of my files, but somethings are not right. Number one, my Hard drive which was previously labeled Z: is now Labeled C: and now gets data put onto it that I do not want, when in fact should be put onto my Local Disk...which instead of being C: is now D:. So how can I switch back or fix this...?

Second, All my programs are not showing up except when I go look for them in program files, what HAPPENED to all my programs?Sounds like you actually creates another WINDOWS install...

Solve : i deleted my sound driver and i cant get it back!?

Answer»

i was making space on my windows xp 2000, and i accidentally DELETED my sounds driver. its been like this for a while and i really need help. if anyone can help me i would be awfully grateful.
-Dr.DopeThis is not too much hassle especially if you have the drivers. However I suspect you dont. All you need to do is...

Re-install the drivers.(if you have them) or most likely....

1.Identify your audio card or chip if its onboard. You can download many different diagnostic programs that will tell you exactly. You could try this one. EVEREST HOME Edition for free at http://www.lavalys.com/

2.Once you know the make and model number so to speak you can search on google for drivers.
There are some automated programs like driver robot but they tend to cost you money.

Anyway give it a go and you will have gained some usefull knowledge if you can sort this out. Post here again if you still having problems.i downloaded it but its KINDA hard to use lol. sry im so bad with computers... can u explain how to do it??ok. down the left hand side of the program u will see a list of items. Click the top item "Computer" and it will expand with more options. Click on Summary and you will see a list of components on the right pane, browse down the list until you find your audio controller. Grab that name and fire it into google and tag "driver free download" on the end.
It can sometimes take a BIT of hunting down but if you post the audio device name here I can do a search for you and point you in the right direction. How do you delete a sound driver? Are you saying you uninstalled it from ADD/REMOVE?Quote from: Gremlin on November 30, 2009, 05:15:25 PM

I don't really think it's SUPPOSED to be complicated to install, but I think to help you further, we should know what model sound card you are installing drivers for.

Solve : Sharing calendars in MS Outlook?

Answer»

My wife and I both use XP SP-2 with Outlook 2000. We use the share feature in Outlook 2000 to display each others calendar on our own computers. If we upgrade to Windows 7 and/or Outlook 2010, what do we do? I understand there has been no share feature since Outlook 2000, which is why we have not upgraded before now. HEAVEN forbid we should have to converse verbally with each other!

If this is a well worn topic please direct me - I did not find it.I have received no responses. Is this question too trivial, too hard, or is it me?Quote from: LouisJr on November 23, 2009, 09:20:57 AM

We use the share feature in Outlook 2000 to display each others calendar on our own computers.
I was not AWARE that Outlook 2000 had that feature. With later versions of Office, I believe Outlook must be used along with Microsoft Exchange in order to share calendars. See Introduction to calendar sharing for INFO. That reference explains two options for sharing a calender if you are not on an Exchange server. Thanks! I will FOLLOW up on these references. It looks like I will have to learn something about Microsoft Exchange.

Solve : XP Installation Lockup At Approximate Midpoint?

Answer»

An older computer, running Win98. I've been trying for a couple days to upgrade this
machine to Windows XP Home Edition.

All goes well until the install program gets to the point where the "Install Setup" is
at the "Preparing Installation" portion of the program. There's a small horizontal window right beneath that "Preparing Installation" title that states "Progress".

A slow creeping yellow progress indicator shows that the program is running SMOOTH UNTIL that yellow progress indicator is approximately 1/8" beyond the word
"Progress", at which point the computer locks up.

In the CMOS, I've tried disabling the Video BIOS shadowing, disabling the CPU internal & external CACHE, enabling the MEM Hole... all at one time and a variation of settings, hints given in the XP docs. This didn't help at all.

In MSCONFIG, I've tried disabling everything in the START portion, also tried various
combinations to no avail. Also made sure that Power Management was set to "Never" on all items.

MB is a SOYO SY-7VDA
Mem is (3) 256mb DIMMs (768mb mem)
HD is a 80GB with 71GB free.
File system is 32 bit (FAT)
CPU is a Cyrix 370 running at 650 MB (100 x 6.5).

The only cards plugged into the MotherBoard are:
PCI Netgear GA311 Network card
PCI Palit Daytona 8mb AGP Video card

I thought perhaps I was running out of memory, but the XP docs state that the minimum mem required is 64mb and I'm way above that. Thanks in advance for any and all advice/help.

Joe

How are you getting to msconfig? Didn't you wipe (format) the drive? Are you booting to the XP disk or are you trying to install windows from within windows? The machine is running Windows 98 SE. The PROBLEM exists when attempting to upgrade to Win XP using the Win XP Home Edition Installation CD.

I use the START, RUN, type in MSCONFIG, hit [ENTER] route to access MSCONFIG.

With Win98 runing, I insert the WinXP CD, then autorun starts the install process.
You should be booting to the CD...not launching it from within Windows.
Are you sure this machine will run XP ? ?Yes, the machine will handle XP. I had the XP disk check it out for compatability and all went well.

I'll try the launch method and report back.
You may need to enter the BIOS and set CDRom as 1st boot device.BIOS was fine, I had it set to boot from the CD if a disk was in there.

Attempting to install XP from "Launch" rather than from inside "Windows" resulted in a warning that I already had another operating system installed, and to install or attempting to install yet another operating system would cause problems.

Rather to attempt the above, I once more attempted to install WinXP over Win98 from within windows and was successful. I changed nothing and have no idea why I had the problem initially. All is well, many thanks for the input, I do appreciate it.

Solve : XP - Need to log in as Admin but Don't Know User or Password?

I TRIED the cmd...net user.....blah blah blah...approach but was unsure where to find the admin user name. May be on the wrong track anyway.

I welcome any help.I understand that this may be viewed as an attempt to violate my computer's security. If this is a topic that will be viewed as taboo on this forum, please let me know & I will drop it. I am just in a desperate situation & was hoping for an easy solution.

Thanks,
KennyKenny,
Is this your computer?
Is it a computer at your school?
Is it part of a business?

If it is your computer, and if it is used at home, there should not be a security problem with normal operations. Except downloads.

You SAID that you are using XP. What Anti Virus program are you using? It may be that the program is trying to protect you from a hostile WEB site that offers free games to people that don't understand the risk of getting something free on the Internet.
for XP default admin username is "administrator" password is blank. you can access it by booting into safe mode or by not using the welcome screen. This is a work computer that I use at home. The game I tried to download was Fiesta, a game that I have played for a couple of years now. The situation is that I had some severe issues with the hard drive & had to send it off to be replaced. The new hard drive was reformatted & anything that I had downloaded previously got wiped during the software load. I no longer know the admin username & password so I can't download anything. I can't even run defrag with the current settings. The firewall is inactive. The antivirus program is McAfee Enterprise 8.7.0i.Quote

OK. Now I see the picture.
Here is my best idea to resolve the issue.

Kindly say you your Boss that if he expects your to take work home, he should provide you a personal computer in addition to the work at home machine.. That way you can separate the work from the play and avoid the security issues.
Do the company work on the machine hay provide.
Do your play on the bonus PC they will give to you.

Solve : problem reinstalling XP after replacing motherboard?

Answer»

I replaced a bad motherboard on a friend's compaq computer. I couldn't get a copaq replacement so I went with one that was recommended by a computer repair shop. Replacing the motherboard went ok, but when reinstalling XP it locks up, bsods, and every error message imagineable. Memory, shadowing, something that shoudn't be in a paging area, and everything in between. Would this be a bios problem, such as the bios needing to be reflashed, or do I need a sp version that has more extensive drivers that I need. I am using a XP version with sp3. Thanks in advance. Solve : no chime on windows startup, files won't drag and drop?

Answer»

Hi! NEW here. I tried searching for my problem and looked at 30 pages of posts before I PUT up a new topic.... didn't find anything. I apologize if this is a repeat post.

I have a Compaq Presario... only a few years old - bought refurbished. Running Windows XP. I don't know any other info. than that.

I had a really bad virus (s?) which did a bunch of bad things to my computer. I bought Fix-It 8 and that seemed to get rid of everything and helped alot. My problems remaining are these...

1) Windows does not chime at startup. Don't know if this is a BIG deal or not...

2) I cannot drag/drop files ANYMORE. When I click on them and drag them onto a folder or try to drag files into the trash - it looks as if it's moving but when I let go it just stays in the same spot.

3) Getting SVCHOST errors and Compaq connections errors quite frequently. I have Windows autoupdates off - and when I tried to update manually - it said I do not have "user priveledges" even though I am logged on as the adminstrator.

Well - that's it (for now?) Any help or ADVICE is greatly appreciated. Thanks! :-)

Sounds to me like you are still infected...

Solve : Windows XP WILL NOT boot up.?

Answer»

There are 4 Diagnostic Lights on the front panel; are they all green?
Owner's Manual, see p. 49-53Right, I was reading my Owners Manual that I have about those lights, but it doesn't say if they should still be on when Windows is booted up (non are on at that point), but when the computer is starting up, the 4 of them light up, then some of the lights keep flashing around. I'll see if I can't get all the lights that light up during the BOOT up process.

Also, I'm not sure if that manual says how they are supposed to stay on or if they are supposed to stay on if there is something wrong when Windows has fully booted up because it is a .pdf file and Adobe is not installed on here yet. I've been mostly wanting to get everything sorted out on here before I started INSTALLING things.Quote from: durango992007 on December 02, 2009, 04:52:54 PM

You didn't read it? I did. "When the computer STARTS normally, the lights flash before turning off. If the computer malfunctions, the sequence of the lights help to identify the problem."

If the video driver is not working, maybe part of the video card has gone bad.I had an old ATI Radeon 9250 in my old computer, swapped it over, everything is crystal clear now. I can change my resolution and everything. However, I still have yet to try the old HD to see if it boots up. I am going to try that now.Yup, everything fired right up. Old HD is just fine, it was the video card that was the problem. 2 things are left to do now.

When it starts up, the BIOS is detecting a Floppy drive. I went into the setup and deselected the floppy on STARTUP but it still says it cannot boot it, so I have to press the F1 key to continue.

Last thing is, I now need to wipe the new HD clean of everything I put on it, which was not much. Mostly just taking Windows off of it. How do I go about doing this? I know how to take the programs off, and I did not put any personal info on it, so nothing to much to worry about there, even though I'm pretty sure Best Buy might do a wipe of the HD if I say that I had Windows installed. Or would it just be beneficial to keep it in the long run?Quote from: durango992007 on December 02, 2009, 06:00:23 PM

Solve : Combine Unallocated disk space?

Answer»

I'm doing a CLEAN XP install. I want to reformat the hard DRIVE (C:) and end up with a single primary partition. Currently, the drive is simple dynamic NTFS; half of which is Unallocated. I tired reformatting from the Windows XP installation CD, but I'm getting an error . . . probably because the drive is currently split up? I think I need to delete the Unpartitioned portion of the drive and then reformat, but I don't know how to delete the Unpartitioned portion. Thoughts? Why is the drive dynamic? Candidly, I'm not sure if there's any difference in deleting a dynamic partition during installation - I don't believe there is. At the beginning of the installation process you should be given the choice to delete and recreate partitions. Delete the extended and logical partitions and create a primary active partitionThe disk is dynamic because I was studying PARTITIONING and RAID a few months ago and this is one of my Guinea pig computers. When I was just trying to reformat, that unallocated portion to the hd showed up without a drive letter. I'll start again and see what comes up.Unallocated simply means unformatted and that's correct, it would not have a drive letter until it's formatted. But it should show up when you try to delete the partition during installation. Thanks, I'll let you know how it turns out...Could not delete the Unallocated space through disk mgmt. Was able to delete, like you said Allan, during installation.

Q: Is there any BENEFIT to running dskchk /r after doing a clean install? The command is chkdsk /r
Did you do a FULL format or a quick format? If you did a full format then chkdsk /r was already run. If not then sure, BOOT to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r - can't hurt.It was a full format. Thanks again. You're welcome

Solve : Windows XP - Privacy During Repair?

Answer»

I have a Windows XP Desktop PC that I may not be able to repair myself.

I don't know if its start up problems are being caused by the graphics card, the PSU or the motherboard or if I could get a repair person to fix all of that at my house.

I have files and folders of my embarrassingly weak attempts at art, singing, film-making etc. on this machine that I really don't want anyone else to see.

Can I fix a Password Protected profile on my machine so that I can log in as me but a repair person would log in differently and just have full access to all the hardware ?

Perhaps I should just get some external hard drives and put my chunterings there and delete them from the PC's disk.If you are taking this to some one else to repair it is a good idea to get an external hard drive and copy every thing you want off of the PC. This will allow you to remove things you want to keep private and also make sure you have a back up just in case the person doing the repair does a complete reinstall of the OS for some reason. This is crucial advice by Mr Oilfield. Not just embarrassing personal stuff but also bikini babes, email contacts bank and credit card details, personal info of any kind.
Dare we ask, "What startup problems"?Quote from: dahlarbear on December 01, 2009, 03:24:43 AM

Dare we ask, "What startup problems"?

Well, it's quite a long story and I doubt I'll manage much coherency - plus I shall also provoke great scorn (my own included) for the head-in-the-sand way in which I have dealt with this machine by NOT dealing with it for the last two years and two months....but I will go ahead and relay --->

The PC is a Windows XP Desktop that was pretty cutting edge when I bought it in February 2003. I'd had it built to my specifications by Evesham - who, although they are out of business now, were possibly at the peak of their visibility then.

I can't remember how early on the "three peeps" issue began.

It's the "doo-bah (pause) doo" sequence (like the rhythm from "Funky Town") that I *think* means the motherboard is saying it can't detect the graphics card.

For *years* this would happen MOST but not EVERY time I tried to power the machine on after it had been switched off for a while - typically overnight.

As I'd done no research about beep codes, I originally thought the beeping and stall might be to do with my wireless keyboard not being within range and it was easy to invent false solutions like this because I could ALWAYS get the machine to start perfectly upon a SECOND request. I didn't really think anything was seriously wrong. It just seemed like a quirk that could be quickly conquered : I think I used to take the plug out from the mains electricity supply, plug it back in try again and then everything was fine. Every time.

Maybe this means I had *and HAVE* a tired PSU and that is all that is wrong. Perhaps it was weak and got weaker.

The peep pattern indicates a GRAPHICS CARD that is incorrectly seated/faulty. It was happening BEFORE I had a graphics card related issue.

A possibly graphics card related issue occurred in August 2007 when my monitor blacked out. I had one or two instances of it blacking out before it broke altogether. I think it finally went "pop".

I bought a new monitor and continued having the same "three peep" start up issues that had gone on for so long that I thought they were "normal" - except now the "unplug it and try again" trick wouldn't work.

Someone from Evesham told me that the hanging could be to do with static charges being held over. I think you were supposed to be able to clear these by holding the front button in and cycling the main switch at the back.

This did SEEM to work once - but wasn't very repeatable.

Consequently, I have kept this PC on permanently since October 2007. It works perfectly once on - which is confusing. It doesn't switch itself off. I get no graphical glitches. Everything works.

The PC re-boots with no problems when you ask it to "Re-start" and I can do a full re-boot if I switch it on immediately after I have turned it off. I don't know what period of time I could extend "immediately" to.
I am hoping it could be the twenty minutes that it really needs to be switched off for soon so that the fluff and dust that will have accumulated inside can be blown out.

I wonder if it only needs a new PSU.

I am confused about the graphics card beep. Is it just a red herring ?

I am worried that the motherboard may have been what was faulty all along and that to disgnose that will be really difficult.

If the graphics card is broken I don't know how I can swap in a new one if I can't depend on the computer to start up because the PSU or MOBO is dead.

I don't know whether I should fight to save this computer, if it CAN be saved or if I can get a replacement new-build that will do everything that this one does.

1. Almost 7 years old now.
2. No wonder they are out of business, "static charge" has nothing to do with it.
3. Leave it on. I'm confused, too.
4. Very strange. I'm more confused.
5. You're probably right.
6. Start shopping for a newer one. Why throw parts at a 7-year old machine? Hardware has changed a lot since then and all is a lot less expensive.Actually, these symptoms were oddly familar but I couldn't recall why, but I just did; my old K6-2 acted exactly this way. my original suspicion was the ATI Rage Pro; replacing that semi-fixed the problem (it no longer simply beeps a few times indicating video error). However, I still had issues starting it cold.

When I recently replaced the power supply, the problem dissapeared. It was no wonder I was having issues though- the psw was 200 watts, and I had nearly every PCI slot filled, memory maxed out, 3 hard drives, a DVD drive, etc.. installedMy graphics card is also an ATI.....and the three beep code is supposed to indicate a graphics card error. Perhaps I am over-complicating my start-up issues by not paying primary attention to this.

If I were able to find a duplicate on eBay would I be able to swap the cards without uninstalling the drivers - or do you ALWAYS have to remove them ?

Would it be best to try to find an identical card ? The same chip-set can be FOUND on lots of manufacturers' versions, can it ? Would I just need to buy a secondhand or new AGP card and then download up to DATE drivers from the web ?One thing has not been mentioned. Does he have a retail version of XP? If so, it can be re-activated to a new motherboard by telephone support. Otherwise, the new replacement motherboard will need a legal copy of XP.

You all know what I will say next. It is easier and cheaper and better to just buy a refurbished PC with a legit XP and a one year warranty. Some are even cheaper than buying a retail copy of XP pro.Hi

I was wondering if I should act on the beep code's message MEANING "Re-seat or replace the graphics card" and buy a new one like this :

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/129962

It's a Zotac 6200A 256MB DDR2 heatsink DVI VGA TVOut AGP Graphics Card

and has very good reviews and twice the on-board memory of my current ATI Radeon.

I think that Radeon is a 9700. ATI/AMD's web site states that is now a "legacy" item. I haven't updated the drivers or Catalyst Software since 2006.

When I look in Device Manager, under "Display adapters" I see :

RADEON 9500 PRO/9700
RADEON 9500 PRO/9700 - Secondary

I managed to find the manual for my motherboard and identify it as a

P4 Titan 667 (845PE Motherboard)

GA-8PE667 Ultra/Pro

The very first page of the manual is illustrated by three sections with large exclaimation marks and may be pertinent to my situation, as I have probably said I don't know how long ago the peeping thing began. It may ALWAYS have happened and I originally thought it was to do with the wireless keyboard because I could always, formerly, boot successfully on power-up TRY TWO.

I will type the page from the manual out verbatim. I'd like to know if my problem could be that a jumper is set incorrectly, (maybe the Evesham assembler just never flicked a switch (!) (...?) if my current card isn't properly compatible with the motherboard and if the Zotac I linked to could be an alternative.

Thanks so much.

Manual Quote :

"! When you installing AGP card, please make sure the following notice is fully understood and practiced. If your AGP card has "AGP 4X(1.5V) notch" (shown below), please make sure your AGP card is AGP 4X(1.5V).

! Caution : AGP 2X(3.3V) card is not supported by Intel 845 (GE/PE)/845(E/G)/850(E). You might experience system unable to boot up normally. Please insert an AGP 4X(1.5V) card

Example 1: Diamond Viper V770 golden FINGER is compatible with 2X/4X mode AGP slot. It can be switched bewteen AGP 2X(3.3V) or 4X (1.5V) mode by adjusting the jumper. The factory default for this card is 2X (3.3V).

The GA-8PE667 Ultra/GA-8PE66 Pro (or any AGP 4X only) motherboards might not function properly, if you install this card without switching the jumper to 4X(1.5) mode in it.

Example 2: Some ATi Rage 128 Pro graphics cards made by "Power Color", the graphics card manufacturer & some SiS 305 cards, their golden finger is compatible with 2X(3.3v)/4X(1.5V) mode AGP slot, but they support 2X(3.3V) only. The GA-8PE667 Ultra/GA-8PE667 Pro (or any AGP 4X only) motherboards might not function properly, If you install this card in it.

Note : Although Gigabyte's AG32S(G) graphics card is based on ATi Rage 128 Pro chip, the design of AG32S(G) is compliance with AGP 4X(1.5V) specification. Therefore, AG32S (G) will work fine with Intel 845(GE/PE)/845(E/G)/850(E) based motherboards.

! Before you install PCI cards, please remove the Dual BIOS label from the PCI slots if there is one."

End of quote from Manual.

Switch the jumper to 4X and see what happens.
Zotac may or may not work, AGP 8X is supposed to be backward compatible with AGP 4X, but given the AGP issues with your motherboard, there is no guarantee it will function.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerated_Graphics_PortI think this *may* be my card (although I don't think I have the "Pro")

http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon9700/radeon9700pro/specs.html

It mentions three levels of voltage.

Are the "jumpers" on the graphics card or on the motherboard ?

I've found the "Connectors & Jumper Setting INTRODUCTION" in the manual - but don't know what I am supposed to change.

I suppose I'd best trot off and see if there's any information at the Gigabyte website.Your best bet would be to create an image of your HDD and burn it to CD...
There are many apps to do this but the best ones are not Free...Acronis True Image is my choice here...
However Macrium Reflect has a Free version on their site for personal use...

After imaging wipe the drive of all data by deleting the partition and formatting it...
Then send it to the Shop...if they have any idea about what they are doing they will know what to to do to re-install the OS and all the drivers to get it back to normal...

But i think it's a bit paranoid to worry about data...those guys see it everyday.

However this would be the safest choice if you are concerned...Quote from: Tatterdemalion on December 03, 2009, 01:15:11 PM

1. That's what you have to figure out. No crystal balls here.
2. Why don't you "eyeball" both. If you can't see the jumper, it doesn't exist.

Solve : Formatting and Windows XP?

Answer»

Hello all...

My system was dogged by a virus and I tried to reload Windows XP (Home). Part way through it froze. Since then whenever I start up the computer, with the Windows disk, it gets to Window Set Up and says it is loading a lot of files. Then it gives me two options to continue with: To Repair Winos XP or to Set up Windows XP.
I select to set up Win xp and it shows the licence agreement and freezes.
I select the repair option and it just switches off and starts up again.
I want to format the disk and start from scratch if I only can but it won't even GET into Safe mode .
What can I do? Please. what can I do? Do you have access to another computer? If you do you can use an enclosure with the drive and format it through the other computer. I assume XP did format the drive prior to INSTALL and found no bad sectors?Hi Murray,

I have another computer and what you recommend sounds great, now if only I knew how to do it.
What does it mean to "use an enclsure" and how is it done? Please.

I'll try it if I can.

Cheers and Thanks,

EdEdwardC,

The drive can be put into a small box with USB connection.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_enclosure

BTW, thank you for posting this. Other people think I am crazy when I tell them that Windows XP CD can not format a hard that has been subjected to certain kinds of software.
This has been documented my Microsoft. You have to format and or delete the partition by something other than the XP CD.

As Murray said, another PC can do it. The limitation is the XP CD itself can not handle a certain situation.

What if f you can not get an enclosure?
Get a 'Live' CD , Boot it on the sick PC and re format the drive.

Thanks for that information. I don't have an enclosure but now at least I have learnt about it.
I am looking into the Live CD thought but it is So Complicated. I'm struggling to get any real understanding, and, to be honest, I'm worried of downloading anything into this computer in case this one also get affected by something I can't cope with.

Cheers,
EdBy using another computer you can not infect it by wiping the drive. The only way it could become infected is if you tried to run all the programs from that drive on the other computer.
All you need to do is buy an enclosure and then connect it to the computer.
When you can find the drive in 'my computer'.
Follow this
Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools. Double click Computer Management and then click Disk Management in the left hand column.

When all the information comes up showing the disk... right click on it and choose to format.

We can help you after this. Hello Mulreay,

I looked into getting an enclsure at, http://www.techbuy.com.au/searchcat/HARD_DRIVE_-_EXTERNAL_DRIVE_CASE_SATA_-_USB_3.5.asp, and wow! There is such a range. From $33 to over $1000. I'm flabbergasted! it is way beyond my understanding.

I also across a web cite offering Spotmau PowerSuite, http://www.spotmau.com/products/package/full.htm?gclid=CJ2-qpLIuK0CFWdLpgodGHdrnA&ef_id=NkFPA9BhDjgAAEXx:2012 0105092511:s
I wonder if you know anything about it? Is it worth trying and does it live up to the claim that it can Boot up any computer and Fix and install Windows?
It comes for $50 - $70 and I'd hate to waste the money on something that will not do me any good at all.

Cheers,

EdYou can get an enclosure for as little as 10$
Just google HDD enclosure. If you spend more than 40$ then you have paid to much for what you want to do.
I wish I could link you but I'm from the UK and my links are for there. Hi I normally post in the hardware SECTION, When doing a clean install of windows it can delete all information on the hard drive virus's included. this website describes the process and explains the procedure.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-xp/help/setup/install-windows-xp

at the bottom of the page there is 3 more pages to open in the first extra page they left out you have the option to delete the partition from the hard drive you should do this and recreate a new partition which is then formated.

If the computer still won't install a new copy it has a hardware fault like faulty memory or bad sectors on the Hard drive which will need to be fixed before windows can be reloaded.

I hope this of some help

Lisa
I think you can put a partition manager on a USB and boot it.
If the virus does not stop the boot process, then it should work.

Personally, I use Puppy Linux if I have a install or partition problem with a PC. It boots from a USB and can alter both SATA and PATA drives. Not the best choice, but it is simple. GPart is in the puppy tool set.

http://puppylinux.com/flash-puppy.htm
The GPart tool can re size partitions and validate the MBR. But it can RUIN data. But if you just want to prep a drive for XP, it is good enough.

Solve : Problem after Upgrading my Desk-Top PC?

I recently got my PC upgraded. Motherboard G-41 Chipset, CPU Intel Dual Core 3.0 Ghz, and RAM 2GB DDR3 have been now installed. The engineer loaded Windows XP Professional on it. Will somebody please tell me whether I can install my original genuine Windows Cd on my PC now ?
If yes, please guide me step-by-step please ! How to delete the Windows XP Professional OS ?There is no "Windows Home and Student Edition". In my last letter I had WRONGLY typed as Windows Home & Student edition.
Will somebody please tell me whether I can install my original genuine Windows Cd on my PC now ?
If yes, please guide me step-by-step please ! How to delete the Windows XP Professional OS ?
Many thanks .What's the problem? Professional is better than Home Edition in every way other than cost. Do you not have a license for Professional? Is it complaining at you for not having a genuine license or SOMETHING?Yes. Professional is a superset of the features in home. All you would be doing by installing Home Edition would be to essentially downgrade your Operating System, and of course waste your own time. Many thanks to BC_Programmer MASTERMIND FOR HELPING ME.
I am afraid, the engineer has installed an OS Windows XP Professional which was easily and quickly available to him , but I doubt whether it is genuine ; he has not given me the "key" to this OS. So, it will not get automatically updated as and when new updates are released. This is, I think, a big disadvantage in retaining this freshly installed Windows XP Professional OS.

Therefore, if possible, I should uninstall it and install my GENUINE Windows XP Home edition . Is my idea correct ? I am 80 years old and need my PC for emails and browsing only.

Please advise me as to what I should do in these circumstances . If I should uninstall the present OS and install my GENUINE Windows XP Home edition then will you please guide me as to how I may uninstall the XP Professional OS and install my GENUINE XP HOME EDITION ; if you can, please guide me step by step, please .

Thanks to you again.
A QUICK Google search came up with this

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/install-reinstall-uninstallCan't you update? If not then yes, you were right in thinking it would be a good idea to install Home Edition and use your genuine license, provided you still have the product key for it.

You won't miss out on much putting Home Edition on there, not for browsing and emailing, and you certainly want to be able to keep your PC updated.

The engineer should have put Home Edition on there in the first place, really; I can't SEE why it won't run on your upgraded system, Home Edition meets the same requirements that Professional meets so if Professional runs then Home Edition will run.Dear Sir

A couple of questions to understand what may have happened.

Was the old computer running XP home. ?
After the Upgrade did you get the computer back with XP pro and all your settings, programs and data on the computer as it was before but with XPpro. ?

UNFORTUNATELY now it has pro if you want to install xp home you will have to delete the hard drive and load a fresh copy.

There is a very handy tool in windows if you do need to do this called File & Settings transfer wizard.

Before giving anymore advice perhaps if i get the answers to the above.
Also did they give you your old hard drive back ?

A technician should have known how to swap your windows etc to another computer without reloading windows.

Sorry if this wasn't the case

I used to use AVG but the recent version is really heavy on my netbook system, and I used PC Tools Firewall Plus last time but it was quite irritating.

What does everyone recommend?I still use PC-Tools and it works for me.

There are free versions of some of the above.

Solve : Cannot continue hardware update wizard?

Answer»

Our company has new properitary vehicle diagnostic software that we lease from another OEM. The new software is an UPDATE from the old software. When installing the new USB driver, on some computers, we get the dreaded "Cannot continue hardware update wizard". We tried to manually install the software by pointing to the drivers but RECEIVE the same error. I confirmed the cable and driver are good. We uninstalled and reinstalled the software. On working laptops, the driver installs right away. This problem has occured on 3 laptops. The company we lease the software from is of no help.

Is this a registry problem? Corrupted file?Has this company given you system requirements specifications? If you are meeting them, should they not be offering proper TECHNICAL SUPPORT? What are the requirements for this software? (E.g. do the drivers only work in XP or 32-bit or what-have-you?)The requirements are met.

I found out the laptop owner didn't uninstall the old software before installing the new software. Who knows what kind of conflicts were created. I cleaned out the registry and drivers the best I could, and uninstalled the software with no luck.

There were 3 registry items relating to the driver manufacturer ID that I couldn't delete. I'm guessing that's the problem. I'll look into a registry cleaner.Quote

Solve : Windows 7 Starter?

I have a hard drive with Windows 7 Starter. I like the system okay, but I would like to change the desktop image. Seems it's not setup like the more advanced versions. Think having starter limits your option, try googling enable aero in windows7 starter, it can be done, whether its worth the effort is another matter. Can't be done in Starter...Aero? Not missing much in my opinion... I always run in 'classic' window mode.

Wasn't the original question about the desktop background though? Surely you can just change the background from the AppData file that keeps the current background.Quote from: patio on January 09, 2012, 07:13:15 PM

Yes it can i've done itI did follow this link to change desktop background or wallpaper on my Win 7 Starter.Patio you don't have some godly ability to know whether or not something like this is possible, it's very possible even if there is no interface to allow you to change it. I read your post the first time.It can't be done without breaking forum rules, because Changing the Desktop background in the Starter Edition is expressly forbidden by the EULA.

Paragraph 8 of "C:\Windows\System32\license.rtf", on a Windows Starter Edition:

What your telling me its illegal to change a registry setting on a computer you own, are you guys for real.

If you agree to a contract and then break the TERMS? Kind of. By installing it or using the software you've agreed to not change those settings, they don't want people with Starter Edition to be able to do common tasks or else they'd never upgrade to the normal editions. But it doesn't matter what reasons Microsoft have, it's part of the agreement.Way i look at it is if they don't want you to have aero on your computer they shouldn't sell you an operating system with it, its up to the owner whether they TURN it on, i can understand the forums worries about encouraging people to do it but no link was put up explaining how its done, just a statement that it was possible (and very easy to do).

Solve : Hosts file has a blind spot??

Answer»

When a website is added to the host file, the website can still be accessed as LONG as a search engine is used as in intermediary. Why is this? Is there any way to prevent this?Have you followed these steps properly:
http://allthingsmarked.com/2006/08/28/howto-block-websites-using-the-hosts-file/
It works perfectly fine for me... EVEN through search engines. Do remember to add entries both with and without the "www" prefix:
Code: [SELECT]127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 facebook.comOf course the SITE can still be viewed through a web-based proxy engine (such as http://www.zend2.com) or a cached version in a search engine.Oh, I forgot about that. I was wondering why I had entries that had www. and no www...

Thanks for the REMINDER!

Solve : The instruction at "0xffbadd11" referenced memory at "0xffbadd11". The memory co?

Answer»

Hello, I "did" reference a prior post regarding this, however, the symptoms and system and responses were not quite applicable or consistent w/ my issues , so, I hope that I can get some clarity and assistance more relative to what I'm experiencing.
I've also read extensively the posting guidelines, and have done my best to make this easy for you to HELP me , and I am hopeful that I've posted this in the proper forum ?
Just over a week ago, an error message began popping up at startup, on desktop, before loading desktop icons, etc, BUT then also during web browsing. *** The Error message came up titled as:"svchost.exe - Application Error", then the message read: "The instruction at "0xffbadd11" referenced memory at "0xffbadd11". The memory could not be "read". Then, under that: "Click on OK to terminate program" The only things I can recall different in the past 2 weeks is, 2 updates/downloads about 4 days prior to first error message:

Java update
Free Studio 5 download (to download audio music from youtube)

Almost immediately after Free Studio had been downloaded, the computer began running much slower, and a message popped up down in the right corner in the form of a little yellow pop-up /notification message. I know that I SHOULD have , but I didn't pay a whole lot of attn to it. Something regarding low memory......?
But then I didn't see the "0xffbadd11" Error Message pop-up until 4 days later when I started up, the Error Message pops up, the desktop does not load until I click "OK" or X out the box. Then It seems to run "ok", but still slower than a couple of wks ago and prior. Last nite I updated, then ran AVG full virus scan. "No Infections Found". I then updated and ran Malware Bytes, again, result "No virus found".
***Now, just a few days ago, ANOTHER error message has ALSO been popping up sporadically :
The instruction at "0x6c6c642e" referenced memory at "0x6c6c642e". The memory could not be "read"..... though not as frequent, nor at startup as the "0xffbadd11" message still does.
I WOULD TRULY APPRECIATE ANY ASSISTANCE IN BEGINNING TO SOLVE THIS ERROR MESSAGE/GET MY MACHINE BACK UP TO SPEED
My skills would be considered more than a beginner, somewhat FAMILIAR w/ following instructions on how to troubleshoot.
MS Windows XP Pro 2002
SP3
Intel ® Pentium® 4
CPU 2.OOGHz 1.99 GHz
1.00 GB of RAM
Thank you in advance, SOOooo much for your assistance, and feel free to inquire as to any other info that I could provide..... and HAVE A HAPPY AND WARM HOLIDAYS!!!! Low memory...
You have only 1 GB of RAM and an old Pentium 4 CPU. If you mean this Free Studio: http://download.cnet.com/Free-Studio/3000-2170_4-205258.html, which is an immense memory hog, I can immediately see why your computer is starting to lag. Consider adding more RAM, and if you happen to have an LGA775 version of the P4, upgrade to the Core 2 Duo.
Make sure that no unnecessary programs are in your Startup folder.
The svchost.exe issues may have been caused by an incomplete/corrupt Windows Update. http://www.ehow.com/how_4480978_fix-application-error-windows-xp.htmlThx x-fusion, for the reply and advice.
1) I'm already maxed out at 1gb of Mem (per crucial scan). I'm on dell dim 2350, circa turn of the century.
2) Yes, you're correct that Free Studio is what I'd downloaded. I've since un-installed it.
3) I could not notice for sure, but I did not see anything "unnecessary" that lept out at me in Startup folder.
4) I followed the LINK to fix the "svchost.exe" issues, but as i got to Step 5, "Click on the Start button to enable..." it got interrupted 1st by the aforementioned "0xffbadd11" message, then again by "Could not start... Error 999", and then AGAIN by "Error 1053".
Any other ideas at this stage? Should I attempt to proceed anyway, even though I get the error messages as I'm trying to Start the services?

Thanks SO much for any assistance, options, info, suggestions etc that you may be able to provide.More errors are popping up at this point... I suggest you follow this guide to start Windows in a "clean boot" state:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
Quote

If your computer is not starting normally, or if you receive errors when you start your computer that you cannot identify, you could consider performing a "clean boot." This operation starts the computer by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This can help you troubleshoot the problem.

You have what you should have. I don't know why it hasn't been automatically updating for you. I'm thinking it might start working right now that you've manually updated to the latest version. Of course, you'll have to wait over a month to see whether this is true.Quote from: artbuc on January 15, 2012, 07:25:02 AM

JRE7 update 2.

The Java web site checked my PC and said I had the right version - JRE6 30. The latest version is Java 7 Update 2.

Firefox on my laptop says that I have the latest version of firefox. I have version 3.6.24 installed on it. The latest version is 9.

As I noted, any and all "update" software is pretty much useless since you END up having to check it yourself anyway. Meanwhile, it sits in the background doing absolutely nothing useful, EXCEPT - apparently - convincing people that others are making things up about later versions.Oracle makes numerous Java products and finding the right one can be confusing to end users who just need the Java browser plug-in, which is Java 6 Update 30 that artbuc has. Various other Java products are more relevant to developers than end users who just need the browser plug-in. End users can verify their they have Java correctly installed by visiting http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and clicking the "Verify java version" button.

Solve : IE cannot access the webpage?

Answer»

hi all, about 4 years ago while the pc was downloading updates before it shut off I inadvertantly switched the pc off. Since then I cant access my ebay account with IE7 or 8, it doesn't bother me because i can with firefox. I'd just like to resolve the problem if i can, to put my mind at rest. I've tried these ideas:- deleted all browser history, disabled add-ons, re-installed ie7&8. It's only that PAGE i cant access.COOKIES ENABLED ? ?cookies are blocked in IEEnable first party & session cookies. You can block 3rd party cookies.allan, done what you advised, no luck. What about resetting IE config settings. No harm in trying.that didn't work. Wonder if it has anything to do with the DNS or IP address. I can't understand why it's only this one specific WEBSITE yet i can access it using ff.Try deleting your index.dat file (you can use ccleaner to do that for you), reboot, and then try again (make SURE cookies are still enabled. I already do that with CCleaner. I'm stuck for ideas, i know i can use FF but i'd still like to solve this if possible, it's bugged me for so long. BTW SSL and TSL are enabled.

Why do you need this?
Relevant information...

an AutoIt / AutoHotkey comparison

That can't be done in batch, but it can in vbs:

Code: [Select]Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

while true
Wscript.Sleep 60000
WshShell.sendkeys "%{F1}"
wend

This is an infinite LOOP so you'll have to change that part for your needs.nice thanks

Solve : SPEED UP YOUR PC BY BASIC TASKS!!!?

Answer»

Hi guys,

i used a lot of old system and there by i came to know some tasks which can increase your pc perfomance.

1.start>run>%temp%>delete

2.download and use antivirus and anti-malware (if you don't have any my choice are avast! and malware bytes which are free)

3.do a complete boot time scan in your antivirus

4.defragement disks in regular basis
(start>programs>accessories>system tools)

5.delete unneeded folders and file thereby increase your harddisk space

6.go to add or remove programs in CONTROL panel and uninstall as much as softwares you don't need

7.never download any registry cleaners from internet as 70% of them are fake(not all) and make your registry infected

8.don't overload your desktop

9. use system tools pre-loaded with os

10. when you uninstall use uninstallers such as iobit uninstaller which not only uninstalls programs but also remove registry items and hard disk items

11.never use any tools

12.clear browser history or better use firefox which has ability to disable history

13.right click the LOCAL disk in tools tab use check disk

14.download from trusted sources only

15.in system properties select advanced tab and in perfomance, select settings and click adjust pc for best perfomance

16.empty RECYCLE bin regularly

17.make regular back-up your system which would help in case something went wrong which can be taken from start?programs>accessories>system tools>back up

18.as already said download from trusted source only downloading fake anti-virus is a virus itself. (i done this myself)

19.on downloading softwares better click "open" if you hit "save" it occupy space

20.if your memory(ram) is too low then change your default theme to classic which helps you in a very minute amountFor 1, 10, and 12, I use Ccleaner. I don't use boot scan. Additionally, you could use the free edition of Superantispyware and making sure protection softwares are up to date.Quote from: jason2074 on January 14, 2012, 12:01:54 AM

Solve : C: Out of Space?

Answer»

Dear Forum,

When I setup my new computer, I found a procedure for installing Windows that recomended 5G of space for the main partition. I did that, and now I see that I am very near full. The other drive has nothing on it, but it puts all of my program files and user documents on C:. Do I need to somehow direct these files that will keep accumulating, to the other drive, or can I just delete the other one to allow it to keep accumulating things in C:?

Thanks!
Mike
Thats a CRAZY small # for any Windows install...unless it's WIN 98...
Where did you GET this info ? ?From a web search. I guess it could have been old. How much space does it TAKE now?
Can I change it?You may have to re-do it...how large is the HDD ? ?Crazy; it's not even showing the other drive now. I think it is 150G.
MikeI would DEFINITELY start over...
When you say the other drive doesn't show explain what's not showing it...
Does it show in Disk Management ? ?Yea. I think I deleted some files that it needs.
I am preparing to do a reinstall now. Thankfully I didn't have much stuff on this computer yet.
Thanks for your help!
Have a nice night,
Mike
Quote from: patio on February 02, 2012, 03:48:11 PM

I would definitely start over...

Without the deleted files problem, I'd boot a Parted Magic CD, delete the unused partition, then resize the first partition to take up the whole drive. Whole process should take no more than 10 minute, with no need to reinstalls.

Even with the deleted files, I'd still be inclined to try the above and then run sfc /scannow.

Solve : Desktop Icons won't show up!!! I really tried many fixes !! :(?

Answer»

Hi,

So the problem is that on Windows XP HOME Edition, I can't get the desktop icons!

First, I went on "Manage Desktop Icons" on properties, but My computer, My documents, Recycle bin are all checked.
I CLICKED on Restore Defaults. Unchecked, checked again... didn't solve the problem.

I thought maybe they are "Hidden"
I changed the folder VIEW properties, and checked "Show hidden Files"... then Clicked on Restore Defaults, and checked again SHOW HIDDEN FILES
Nothing happens...

I went in Documents and settings, and in the user name folder... then Desktop... and there is icons right there!
Some folders, pictures, ... etc

So normally the desktop should have some icons on the desktop !

Changed the wallpaper, and put it on NONE ... nothing change... i put a REGULAR Windows picture...

I checked the GRAPHIC drivers... and tells me that I have the good drivers installed

what's wrong?
I made some research... but everything I find so far don't solve the issue...

Unlike 90% of webpages I find... I have the Taskbar, and the START button on the bottom, and everything works fine, except the desktop icons.

If I create a new Folder, or Text document... nothing shows up... and when I go on the DESKTOP folder in Documents and settings, I can find "New Folder" ... "New Text Document" ... right there...

If you want to see the desktop icons, you have to turn them on.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]omg!
I checked so many settings !!! but didn't check that one !

Thank you soooo much!!
That solved my problem !

It's like sooo easy, but you have to think about it.

A big thank;s to you ! You are welcome.

Solve : If I restore my PC to "factory" condition....?

Answer»

Hi, I have BECOME infected with Virut, and from all I have read it is a lost cause. I have a Dell PC, with Windows XP, SP3, and was wondering if I restore my PC to "factory" condition (if I can even do that, considering Virut seems to be everywhere, even safe mode), will this effectively remove all traces of Virut?Unless you have a boot sector virus, YES - a factory restore will work for you. Please forgive my ignorance, but how would I know if I had a boot sector virus? Is it SOMETHING obvious? No, but in the scheme of things they are fairly rare (at least they USED to be - recently there have been a rash of them). The likelihood is that it is NOT a boot sector virus - and if you're sure the offending malware is VIRUT then it is definitely not a boot sector virus. The system restore is worth it! I had a bad virus and did it. I am glad I did. My computer runs like new.
It takes a few hours to back up your programs and data and reinstall everything, but it is good stuff to know about.
