Solve : Urgent help needed to fix my laptop.?

Answer»

Hi I am new to this forum and have been having serious issues with my laptop. When I switch on and load windows normally or even in safe mode I get a black screen with a message, all I am able to see of this message as it closes down so fast is (IRAQ_ error).

I have tried to start up with the windows XP disk but to no avail as my disk drive won't work. When I have managed to start windows normally it shuts down and restarts again automatically and repeatedly does this. What do you advise?

Please help

SueWhat is new or different since the LAST time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?susanaliceberry, are you sure it says IRAQ and not IRQL? Like this:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Sue - reboot and hold down the F8 key. A list of bootup options should be displayed, select "Disable Automatic Restart On System Failure" and hit Enter.

When your system fails to boot you should now see a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) which gives details of the cause of the system failure. Post BACK with the Stop CODE and someone will advise as to your next move.

Good luck.

Solve : Duplicate Copy of "My Documents", will not delete??

Answer»

Hi Forum,

I did a reinstall of WINDOWS (wiped hard drive) to get rid of a bad virus, and somehow ended up with a duplicate copy of "My Documents" just below C drive in my directory. It is CALLED a different name, but the properties show it to be the exact same size, and to contain the same files, and created at the same exact time and date. When I right click, the option to delete does not exist. Does anyone know what is going on? I think maybe I miss COPIED it when BACKING up to my memory stick. It is 9.31GB, and I only have a 60Gb SSHD!

Thanks!
Mike
Thanks, afsarkhan; but isn't there a way to just delete it? The reinstall takes hours!

Thanks!
Mike
Thanks; I ran CHKDSK Utility, and it says my C: is clean. I did not make any partitions. Windows is on the main partition. I have ran Avira scans, and have Spy Bot running. They show no viruses. Are you sure it is from a virus? Wouldn't the virus be GONE now, since I did a reinstall already?
Thanks!
Mike

The key is not saved on each OS cd, it is saved somehow into your system, most likely the BIOS of the motherboard

This is wrong...

Please be more specific to why it is wrong.

The second one is not specific on my part because majority of the SYSTEMS already have the boot from cd-rom option WITHOUT the NEED to access the BIOS.

Thirdly, how is this helping the issue by pointing out what is wrong without the proper solution? It's F11 on the laptop I am trying to REPAIR. But I still don't have the OS disk. I should have it TONIGHT.

Patio, can you explain? I would like to understand. Can I use a OS disk from someone else or not?

A full Win XP CD from Microsoft can do a repair install on the PC...it has to match the version installed...

See Here...

Done properly all data and apps will be intact...
One mistake and all data and apps will be gone...but you will have a fresh install of XP.

Hello EVERYONE And Happy New Year,

My problem is, I was on my pc, left to go to the store,

Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at isearch.avg.com

My wife's pc is on the same line.

Thank-You,

Turn off both the router and modem if you have each or one for 1 MINUTE...
Re-boot your PC...
Turn the router/modem BACK on...wait 3 minutes and try now.Thank-You for your quick reply.
I tried that. I do have a wired connection,
with a modem and router.

Not CLEAR...so it didn't work ? ?
If not right clik that Network icon and select repair...This post can now be closed.
The problem was a broken wire plug leading into the linksys.
The end that locks the wire into the linksys was broken off
Was not making contact.............

Thank-You,

Solve : Gaming Issue?

Answer»

Windows XP SP2 (recently removed SP3)
Pentium 4 3.01GHz H/T (Recently Re-applied thermal PASTE because temperatures were reaching 100D CELSIUS)
3GB RAM (Recently Added 1GB May be faulty RAM, Any RAM testing application suggestions?)
80GB IDE (Quite old, Speedfan says it's in good shape)
Nvidia 128MB gfx (This may be the source of the issue)
Mobo, Drivers up to date - no issues there.

[Minecraft concern INFO: JDK 7; JRE 7]
Recently games such as Minecraft, Plants vs. Zombies and Morrowind have been crashing abruptly and without warning.
No error dump file will be generated in any of the game folders which is odd, and the process has disappeared in the task manager.

I am thinking it may be a Java issue, the problem is I am sure many games I play do not use Java such as 'Morrowind'.

So I decided to rule that out. I had heating issues with the CPU not too long ago so I replaced the thermal paste and elevated the speed of the CPU fan and out-TAKE fans.
The CPU is happily sitting AWAY at around 50 degrees Celsius when in use.

So I decided to rule the CPU out (Hopefully a good move)

I added a 1GB stick of RAM which does not conform to the other 2 sticks of RAM. I have not yet tested to see if the issue still occurs after removing the stick. Are there any memory diagnostic tools you guys/girls could recommend?

I kept the RAM a fair participant in the issue.

So this left me with either somehow a PSU issue (unlikely)
Or a GFX card issue.

No matter how I tweak the gfx card, (even under-clocking it), the error still seems to occur.
I'm thinking either bad drivers or bad card.| It has the latest drivers it can support.

Hard drive is not corrupt, basically fresh installation, registry is tip-top shape.

Any suggestions?
And anything else I should diagnose?

Thanks for any help! From what I know all those games are web based so I would definitely CHECK for an update of Java. Another thing that can cause is the faulty memory that you got. No program that I know of, the easiest way is to take the new stick out and see if it still will give you an error. If the Java and the memory didn't fix the issue, then I would suggest doing a system restore to the point before you did all the modifications, if non of that worked then I'm not sure. Tell me one thing. The games worked before right? What was The reason behind The modifications? Why was SP3 removed ? ?You can use memtest86+ if you want to check for memory errors. Java Runtime Environment(JRE) is the only required software to run Minecraft, so JDK could be uninstalled.

Solve : Windows Installed to E:, not C: !?

Answer»

Hi Forum,
My COMPUTER has been doing funny things lately, so Idecided to start over and reinstall Windows. I have two hard drives, and thought the reinstall would wipe both. It evidently did not wipe E:, and INSTALLED in it instead of C:! Can someone tell me how to wipe both and install in C:?
Does Windows 7 have fewer problems than XP?
Thanks a lot!
MikeBoot to the OS CD and choose the option to format whatever drives you WANT to format. Make sure there are no external usb devices connected. Install the OS.Thanks Allen,
Will that wipe both hard drives?
Thanks!
MikeHi

If the computer has a card reader as some laptops and desktops do these need to be disconnected until after windows is installed.
The manufactures recovery Cd's know this and partition and assign drive c to the windows install drive.
Also as you have 2 drives wipe both (although not necessary) and disable the 2nd drive, either in the bios or disconnect the drive. This will stop windows installing on the wrong drive.
Best to select the largest and newest drive for windows and then install windows.
After that is completed enable the 2nd drive. Restart if both drives show in mycomputer then after shutting down connect the card reader restart and check that the drives are c d and e being the dvd/cd and then the drive letters for the card reader if there is one installed.
I personally would never wipe a drive to install windows
Hi TECHNO,
Thanks! I was able to reformat C: and install windows in it. During the process, however, I lost my second hard drive. Windows does not show it in my computer. How do I find it so as to format it?
Thanks!
MikeHi Mike

From windows go to command prompt, and type diskmgmt.msc

this will start windows disk mangement where you can format and create partitions, assign drive letters etc.

Regards

Lisa
Hi Mike

Sorry I gave you the place to run the command it should have been in the run box

Lisa
Thanks Lisa! That did it!
Someone should publish a book with these basic tips in it. They could make millions!

Solve : Internet Explorer Not Displaying Properly?

Answer»

I have a compaq presario sr1303wm running XP with sp3 on it. I have ALWAYS had issue with the internet explorer or foxfire not diplaying the same as other computers. Now I'm not able to see some of the little macro buttons for actions, and sometimes I see text in the button and text written again over the top. Please help??

Thanks,What versions of IE and FF are you using? What add-ons if any have you selected or disabled in those browsers? Give Opera a try and see if the issue is resolved. Or if FF is a must then try "Sea Monkey" (by Mozilla) and see if that makes a difference. truenorthI have IE 7 and recently updated foxfire. I tried Opera and I think it is going to work for me. I still am bugged I cant get IE or FF working right with this old hunk of junk.

Thanks again for your help!I don't know if it was a limited issue but i as did some other USERS (when i used to have both IE--6 i believe--and FF installed) that i would have conflicts between them causing issues. Don't know if that can be CONTRIBUTING to your issue. You might want to try using Seamonkey in conjunction with Opera and see how that goes if you desire more than one browser. I ALSO use Google Chrome as a secondary browser on my laptop (with Seamonkey) but may soon be deleting Google for other factors i am becoming concerned about. Of course browsers are a personal preference thing largely based on familiarity i suspect but of the ones i have tried so FAR Opera is by far my favorite. truenorth

Solve : line 16588 of inf file \i386\txtsetup.sif is invalid?

Answer»

hello everyone,i am NEW at comp hope and ,yes,i hope to find some help.my name is Volker and i have the above problem with my thinkpad 600.i think i accidentally erased NTLDR and now can not boot.with NTLDR MISSING error showing and going in circles with ctrl+alt+delete to restart.i try to boot up with widows xp home edition re installation cd,service pack 2 included but it will not work.i can get into the bios and set the cd as number one and the hdd number 2 but the cd will not boot.same thing with hdd as number 1.i installed xp last year from this cd and it ran fine.so what can i do about the NTLDR problem and then what about this invalid inf. file which i guess is on the cd?i had thought i could just copy the NTLRD file from this cd!!but she will not boot. VolkerYou cannot boot from CD but you still say you get the message that line NNNNN of txtsetup.sif is invalid? This problem often happens with Windows install disk converted to USB flash drive with WinToFlash (because files get corrupted) Other causes are damaged CD or malfunctioning CD drive.
It also hapens quite often with the "Sharpie" versions of Windows...YEP that is the answer for your question
it s happening from your corrupted compact disk
Thank you;I was able to boot into lenovo rescue and recovery, think advantage dik from cd drive.I have all these diskettes for my other x61 laptop and thought in desperation to try this.so pressing f12 or changing 1st boot to cd in the bios i was able to load the RR module. In the Advantage window I chose Restore System. It started the Predesktop Installer and copied a whole bunch of files like many X\i386 system 32 files, help files ,opera, python,rr migration etc,?I then asked me to remove cd and power off and power on.RR configuring your system hourglass spinning came on and please wait sign. Then the prompt"to restore backup made to cd/dvd please insert the disk LABELED "FINAL C".To restore from a back up copied to cd/dvd insert the LAST disk of the back up set. After inserting the correct disk reselect cd/dvd in the dropdown menue.
I do not have any of these disks-----so I inserted my XP reinstallation disk--nothing---then I tried the number 6 of my 6 xp 61 lenovo product revovery disk---nothing.

As you are learning you cannot use recovery CD's from one laptop on another laptop...
Order the Restore CD's from Lenovo...usually they only charge shipping.I do not know what a"SHARPIE VERSION OF WINDOWS"means but it's not a copy of some sort that I have but an original xp reinstall disk which came with the purchase of my dell desk top in 2005.I used it once to reinstall the desktop and then on this ibm laptop lenovo 600 which my sister gave me last year.I had to call in for the registration and was given a number which worked to get XP onto the laptop which had windows 2000 on it before. So I thought it would work again but it won't boot because it is not a boot disk.I do not think my rescue and discovery module which shows up when I boot and press F11
works PROPERLY because I can not get any response from Event Viewer nor System Info. Was this recovery program installed on these machines at the start(in this case probably in 2000,or did I partially install it when put the x61 rescue and recovery disk in the drive and then tried to boot the laptop after having changed the bios to boot from cd first??I had checked that cd on my desktop and found it had the NTDETECT and NTLDR files on it and figured I could somehow copy them from the RR module.Go figure, another novice.Anyhow I do not need to save any files nor info so is there any way at all to get back to windows NT or 2000(I have no disks)or to setup somehow, to be able to use the XP Reinstallation disk?Is there any way to get into DOS ,then clean up the mess and start over???Volkerhello,my problem persists,my thinkpad laptop 600 still does not boot up.I tried windows "MAKE MSDOS BOOTDISK"but it will only do this for floopy disks,i.e. the menu for cd's does not provide the option "make bootdisk"Is there a way around this?I could this from the desktop or the thinkpad x61 laptop both with windows xp.I checked the internet and found EDDIEMAINTENANC.COM seems to have a fix download for $10.- .Is that safe??and will that work?Thank's VolkerThe only "safe" option would be to order the Recovery CD from IBM...the manuf.
I wouldn't trust anything else as you don't know what kind of payload may be included...I tried IBM on friday, still no reply. Is there a link for a download?I ended up having to register and providing a list of my problems.Thank's for the reply anyhow. It seems no one else has a clear cut solution for this.as googling the problem seems like every xp user is looking for this fix.I sure did not expect deleting one file(inadvertantly)could cause an almost insoluble problem.VolkerHave you checked at the site and/or looked in your Manual if there is a hidden recovery partition ? ?
If there is you would want to back up any important data on there and run it...
NOTE: Doing so will wipe ALL existing data and apps and take the laptop back to Day One status...

Let us know before you proceed.Thank you;As I INDICATED in my post of Jan.21,I did get to the rr module(Think Advantage) that day and went to option "Restore System".At that point the predesktop inmstaller got to work, copying maby files ,such as:x\i386,system32,x\preboot,help,opera\python\rr migration and more. Then it asked to remove cd and power off and power on.RR window indicates "configuring you system and a widow with an hourglass turning asking "please wait" appeared. It then read "to restore a backup made to cd/dvd please insert the disk labeled "final disk"To resstore a baxkup from cd copied to cd/dvd insert the last disk of the set.after inserting the correct cd reselect cd/dvd in the dropdown menu.
Since I have neither of these cd's I shut down. Now when get into the rr advantage module nothing shows up under any option.
Would someone know if thinkpad 600 had this rr module installed? If not I think I may have installed it ,or part of it,by inserting the X61 thinkpad recovery disk. Now on bootup I get to bios with F1 or 19990305 .Volker

Solve : HP DV9000 laptop XP. Can not connect to wifi.?

Answer»

I have a HP DV9000 laptop window XP that does not connect to wireless.
I went to hardware device manager and they are all working fine. I tried a portable wireless adaptor and it works fine.
There is a wireless switch at the front left of laptop, I don't know if it is supposed to be switched to left or right to turn it on.

Whether I switch to left or right blue light(wireless switch on) does not turn on.
Do you see a blue light from the led light?I am including the steps to establish a connection with a wi fi . The link is for a different HP model however the instructions are the usual ones applicable to most wi fi connection procedures. Please read and follow them and if the problem REMAINS let us know. It will be essential to 1st determine that your on/off switch for the wi fi is on and is in fact working.
http://www.ehow.com/how_8244113_connect-pavilion-dv6000-wifi-network.html
truenorthThanks truenorth. I will take a look.
Yes Jason, there is blue led lights but they are power and HDD lights. Wireless light is below them and it stays red. From my past use, it turns blue when connected.I just FOUND out that the wireless switch is supposed to switch to right to turn it on. In the past, when I do that the wireless light turned to blue. I did not drop the laptop top or anything. I don't think there is any physical damage.Unless there is something within the COMPUTER (such as in the bios to disable a wi=fi connection) it sure looks like a loss of a connection at a hardware connector. If it worked before and doesn't now something has changed. There are certain things (very few) that a laptop user should attempt to do in the way of repairs. Not knowing your experience/comfort level with opening up the case it may be the safest thing for you to do is take it to a reputable repair shop (unless it still has a warranty). Even if there were a possibility to disable the wi-fi function from within the bios i would still expect that the light should illuminate if the switch is in the on position.truenorth
P.S. Just one last suggestion ==with the switch in the on position apply a small pressure on the case in various locations to see if you can get the light to come on even if only briefly.Quote from: aere on January 25, 2012, 09:58:04 AM
I just found out that the wireless switch is supposed to switch to right to turn it on. In the past, when I do that the wireless light turned to blue. I did not drop the laptop top or anything. I don't think there is any physical damage.

Since you have now determined the correct switch position right clik the Network and select Repair...or set it up all over again via Control Panel...Had a similar problem recently...found drivers for the wireless NIC were corrupted / uninstalled / REBOOTED / OK!

Alan <>Hello aere,

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this anyone, but my friend had the same problem. After months of persuading him to get rid of the Wireless Stick he used, I eventually got him to get it to work in his laptop. He explained to me that his "dad" has tried getting wireless to work, however it cost too MUCH money. I just laughed. The best thing I can suggest for you my friend is to get the WiFi drivers for your laptops model from the HP driver/support site. Below I have posted a link to the drivers for your exact laptop, just choose your operation system somewhere on that page, and download the required drivers you need.

[Drivers for DV9000 Laptop WINDOWS XP]

And to make things quicker for you, below is the hyperlink for the WiFi driver, up to you which one you click.

Solve : XP Blue Screen?

Answer»

I RETURNED to work after a short leave and found out my workstation is back to WinXP. When starting the MACHINE for the day's work, WinXP gets blue screen during the splash screen and shortly resets itself so I dont get to read the error msg. On following startup attempt everything gets going smoothly with little fuss when prompting to Start Windows Normally. What could be the cause for this? Im kinda scared to lose everything once again if this goes on every day.

Thanks in advance! Next time it boots successfully travel to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery...
Uncheck "auto restart on errors"...
The BSOD will now remain up...Post the entire message here including the gibberish...Download BlueScreenView:

I returned to work after a short leave ...

Doesn't your employer have an IT department? Should you be even thinking of fooling with this machine?
Good Point...

From our Forum guidelines:

Quote
If this is a machine at your place of Business, we need to be informed beforehand. This is also not negotiable and we will not be responsible should you fail to do so.
We dont have IT policy in our office. We were just given reminders to keep everything in running condition, so this is a matter of tacit agreement. Just keep the company data safe, which I've been doing since the last time I had a machine dilemma. I've discussed this matter earlier and my boss just ordered weekend data backups. They won't care about the equipment, just the database. Im not seeing any violation whatsoever (But I do care about starting from scratch again, if its going to be the case)

Anyway, i did what patio told me to do and I was able to write down the BSOD msg. It says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME with tech info STOP: 0x000000ED (0x85F0D900, 0xC000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). Im still able to get into Windows in the second reboot without any fuss.

I just remembered this is the exact drive which died out on me a few months back and 'came back to life' when I reconnected it after a while being unused. I proceeded to use the drive right away (cant remember if i re-partitioned it after i found out it's still usable) and it started giving me the BSOD lately.

What could be the prob here? Is there any present physical defect on the drive or what? Am I DOOMED to lose this installation once more once it fails on me again?DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site...
Use it to create a bootable CD ( cleanest test method since the OS isn't invovlved )

In the meantime start planning a backup strategy as the drive may need replaced.
Only other thing it can point to in this is the drive's data cable...you can try a new one.

Solve : Fresh install 5 mins boot?

Answer»

I just thought about it some more and it makes no sense that the OS even works at all if the drivers that aren't working are the CPU and Kernel

I think I might have found a solution: http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/windows-nt-2000-xp/threads/295907
Very similar to my problem, except it takes even longer for me. I'll try this and come back tomorrow.

Thanks for the help.I'm not so sure where I could even begin to DEBUNK the nonsense being asserted in that post.

I particularly like the guy going on about what the rundll32 command for ProcessIdleTasks does, and hits so wide of the mark of what the command really does it's beyond comedic. ("That command essentially cleaned up and 'defragged' your Boot Sector, helping you ACHIEVE maxiumum boot speed")

Then again, I'd be wary of any "solution" that purports to fix a problem with a registry cleaner. The fact that your INSTALL is pretty much a clean install makes the likelihood that it is the cause rather low. Then again, if it's a clean install I imagine you haven't a lot to lose, either.

Yes, both in normal and safe-mode. What part of the registry contains the drivers to load? So I can find those three drivers.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control contains system configuration SETTINGS.
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services contains driver and service configuration information.

Though I don't think mucking about there is a good idea...I haven't responded for a while because I gave up. I tried reg CLEANERS and it removed the error messages in the boot log, but it didn't effect the boot speed at all. So the errors were not even related to the problem. I think I am going to just try a different OS like 7 or Linux.I still believe it's a hardware or driver issue...as you stated earlier the OS shouldn't enter into it...

Tony Here is what I have on this subject>>

One unfortunately common problem is data corruption on a hard drive and the dreaded "Unmountable Boot Volume" error. While the easiest thing to do may seem to be to format the drive and start from scratch, there is a better way of doing it, as long as you have a Windows XP installation disk handy. Read on to learn more.
Computer hardware wears out over time, it’s a fact. Your hard drive works constantly reading and writing data, and this (among other factors) may cause errors on certain parts of your system.

If you receive the "unmountable boot volume" error and have an installation disk, you still have a chance to save your system.

1. Insert your XP installation disk into an optical drive and boot up your computer.
2. When you see a welcome screen, hit the R key on your keyboard. This will enter you into recovery mode with a DOS prompt.
3. Now type chkdsk /p and hit Enter. This will launch a utility which will check for errors on your hard drive.
4. After the process is done, type fixboot and hit Enter to repair any damaged boot files which may have become corrupted. When asked to say yes or no, type the Y key on your keyboard.
5. Type exit and press the Enter key to reboot your computer.

If all went well, you should now be able to boot back into Windows WITHOUT a problem!
Hi

I tried this it looked like it was going to work, then when i booted it back up still did the same thing. When you say reformat my PC how would I do that?

Thanks for your helpDont reformat yet ...... be paintent wait for other members .... you need more than 1 opinion before you do anything drastic like that ...

Solve : CMOS checksum error, after change of power supply?

Answer»

firstly, I'm really sorry if this is the wrong forum - couldn't decide if a windows or hardware PROB!

I have a PC which I built 2yrs ago, after teaching myself how to do it after getting a marketing job at a computer components firm. However, I've done nothing with it since so have forgot most of what I learnt...

A week ago the pc just wouldn't turn on, at all. Took to a repair shop - it was the power supply as I thought & they replaced it. They tested it with a setup there & it worked fine, so they connected back up the rest of the components inside the case
& I collected it. However, just got it home & set it all back up, but when turned on it only gets as far as the memory cheeck screen - seemingly finding the memory, HD, DVD drive etc ok - then says 'CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded. press F1 for setup or delete to continue', but pressing either does nothing. tried a few times now.

From looking through your forums it seems it MAY be BATTERY related? Are there any other things I should try first? Feel a bit out of my depth!

Can post the specs if that will help...

Thanks for any help in advance - and apologies if text speak crept in anywhere - having to access via my cellphone...It's probably the CMOS battery...part # CR 2032. They TEND to die when a MACHINE is left to sit for any long time.
Remove all power when working inside the case and take anti-static precautions...

If the F1 & Delete keys are doing nothing then I suspect you have a USB keyboard, if this is the case then try a PS/2 keyboard.Nice catch, Fed...A curse on USB keyboards & mice. Off with their heads ! !

Solve : Windows XP background doesn't work.?

Answer»

Any of your input would be greatly appreciated, Here's anything that I know to help you help me.
Windows XP
not a "real" copy.

Homemade computer. My brother built it for me a few years ago. But I've moved away and I can't ask him for help anymore I'm sorry i can't tell you anything else. I have 2 hard drives, I don't know how much RAM or anything like that I have. And I don't know how to find out. I'm sorry.
I have adwatch3.0 and ad-aware 6.0, run them constantly. i also have zonealarm anti virus that I just got and have run that.

Okay. I believe my computer is clean of viruses, as it should be since I've been running anti virus and spyware. I've tried to do all that for the past month or two. I'm not sure how it started at all, either. I just know that why husband was on the computer doing something, and then when I get to it it has no background. As in I had a picture for the background but it was just black, the desktop icons were there and everything.
So i right click the desktop, pull up properties and go to the desktop menu.
well when you look at it everything seems FINE, and I can see the background list, but I can't scroll down. As in it's not even a button to click. Now i can change the desktop color to whatever I want, i just can't change the image, nor scroll down and look at the image background selection.

Although I know the background image is there. Whenever I start the computer up or turn it off, it'll appear right at the first/last moment, and then disappear. Weird.

It hasn't been any kind of REAL problem, but it's a huge nuisance. I looked all over the website, and asked a few computer savvy friends what they thought. Noone could help me. So i thought I could ask here, and maybe SOMEONE else who has the same problem can get help.

Thanks so much and I'm sorry I don't know much about my computer itself. it's a bit of a mutt. If there is a way i can look up more information I'd be happy to do so.

Thanks again!!Do you have XP Professional or XP Home?
If you don't know, right click "My Computer" and SELECT properties.
Click the "General" tab and the version is listed under "System:".Thank you for replying and telling me how to find it!

Windows XP Professional
Version 2002
service pack 2

Intel Pentium III Processor
944 MHz, 512 MB of RAM

I hope that helped!!Okay try this:
Select Start and "Run..."
Type gpedit.msc and press enter
In the left window panel find and click "User Configuration"
In the right window pane find the "Administrative Templates" folder and double click it.
Double click "CONTROL Panel" and double click "Display".
Find the policy called "prevent changing wallpaper" and double click it
Set it to "Disabled" press ok and exit the Group Policy editor.

Hopefully this should allow you to change wallpaper again.

I tried it and it didn't work.
Thank you so much for trying though. I didn't even know that existed on my computer.Sammiesoon ignore deep, he is just being a troll.

EDIT: He apparently disappeared...
Weird.

Anyone have any ideas?I found something that might work.
Go to this site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Press W in the alphabet at the top of the page.
Find where it says "Allow Wallpaper/Background Changes"
Right click it and select "Save target as" or "save link as" (depending on your browser) and save it on your computer.
Run the file by double clicking it.get spybot search and destroy. an infection might have messed with you registery, and hopefully spybot will find the changeit doesn't do anything.

When i right click the desktop and go to properties and go the menu in which I'm supposed to be able to change my background it doesn't even work. The scrollbar which lets me scroll through all the different options for background (i.e. none, azul, autumn and so forth), the scroll button doesn't even work. I can't click on any of the options(i.e. none, azul, autumn), as in there is not option to do that. it won't get highlighted it just looks like an image.
The only button that is at all usable is the change color function so i can make my desktop color go from black to pink if I wanted.

Also the image that i selected shows up each time windows closes or opens. As in the first thing I see when windows opens is the desktop background picture that i chose then it disappears to the background color which i chose (black). And whenever I turn off my computer the background color of blackdisappears and turns into the background image I chose. then it closes. But all during it actually being on it doesn't work at all. and the image I chose I just right clicked and set it as background. I couldn't do it through the menu.

It sounds so weird and I've never heard of it happening before. I'm thinking a virus messed with it, but I have run anti-virus and anything that was on the computer is gone now.
Any Ideas would be lovely...except rubbing a magnet over my hard drive.I have 2 spyware removing software alreayd on my computer and zonealarm is antivirus AND spyware remover. I also had the AVG trial on my computer before I got zonealarm. once its done scanning (spybot) you can remove it, i just want to see what it findsOkay it's scanning and i've heard alot of good things about it. I think I'll keep it and uninstall the other 2 programs I have to free up some space.its up to youQuote from: Sammiesoon on September 26, 2007, 08:45:38 AM

Solve : Turntable USB?

Hello guys

I jst connected my new turntable usb, but no sounds are coming from the computer speakers. Is there a special setting i might have forgotten? Also, a set of RCA adapters comes with the package. Should i use them, or just the USB should be plenty?

Thank youWhat do you want the device to do?

Most here would not recommend this type of device.
Why do you think you NEED it?Mostly to listen to my father's CLASSICS, and ripped them to burn CD's afterwards.OK, cannyou gie use the make and model?

A standard turntable has outputs that must go to a preamp and then to the line input of you sound CARD. A USB turntable has a CD with drivers that you have to install.

- But without more information we can not tell you what to do.

I may have the same problem. I have a Numark usb turntable [TTUSB]. My computer is a Sony VIO PCG-FRV37.
I have windows XP home EDITION version 2002.
The software that came with the turntable is Numark software installation disc version 7.0. EZ vinyl/tape converter.

Solve : Xp will boot but get blank screen after?

Answer»

I have a HP Mini 110 Netbook with Windows XP. I tried to reboot in safe MODE but it will stop half way. I tried rebooting with the last known good configuration and it give me a blue screen. I can not read the blue screen because it tries to reboot the computer.
Does anyone have any idea of what is causing this or what to do to fix it? I really do not want to reformat my computer and lose everything on it.

ThanksWhat is new or different since the last TIME everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, VIRUS, error, etc)?My kids were on the computer and accidently deleted Roxio back on track software. When I seen it being deleted, I turned the computer off. After that, nothing has worked.Okay. In the future please give all relevant information in your FIRST post. We're going to try two things. First is the EASIER:

Boot to the XP CD and choose the FIRST repair option. This will take you to the recovery console. Once there, run chkdsk /r - it will take a while to complete - allow it to do so. You'll know when it's finished. If that doesn't solve the problem then:

Boot to the XP CD and do a repair install (this time choose the SECOND repair option & allow XP to reinstall on top of itself). Done properly, a repair INSTALLATION will not effect installed programs or settings. Once done, you'll need to go to Windows Update and redownload all updates. Thanks but got one more question. Is there anyway I can boot the windows xp from a flash drive? I have the cd but no external cd rom.http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-22_11-5928902.html

What is this command prompt? DOS? UNIX? LINUX? BSD? come on, be a bit more specific here. Almost all Operating Systems have a "command prompt".

Quote
please is there a way i can extract or copy smartdrive.exe
Thanks, although it would have taken negligibly more effort to have specified it directly, I think it's safe to assume we are talking about a DOS-based system, and trying to install WinXP through a DOS command prompt. This I gather because I recall that the XP setup whines if you don't have smartdrv (it's called "SmartDrive" but the executable is smartdrv.exe) loaded. Note that smartdrv is included in MS/PC-DOS versions 5 and later (and possibly later versions), and a version is provided with earlier windows versions as well (Win 3.0 has a CRAPPY version with some freaky weird half-working IMPLEMENTATION, it doesn't cache external drives so wouldn't meet the needs of XP's install, that and it's a .sys file that you load from config.sys make it pretty pointless).

Since smartdrv is provided with the installation media of these various products, ONE can assume that you don't have any of them; therefore the presumption is that you are in fact booting from a DOS boot floppy. So the question now becomes- why? Is there no OS on the drive? Can you not boot to the CD itself?
and burn to a CD cos my system doesnt have a floppy disk facility ?

Quote
and burn to a CD cos my system doesnt have a floppy disk facility ?
Alright, now I'm just confused. If you don't have a floppy drive then you aren't booting to the boot floppy; this MEANS you are probably booting to the hard drive, which for some reason has a version of DOS of one form of another installed.

And since you have a CD-ROM drive, the question is raised yet again- why not just boot to the CD? Why are you trying to run setup from within a MS-DOS environment?

Solve : Windows XP will not AutoPlay music CD's / Re-installing OS...?

Answer»

I have tried to use troubleshooting procedures from Microsoft and elsewhere without success.

My main concern is that I am going to reformat and install OS, and this will require the CD drive to boot.
Last week I re-installed OS because of a virus/malware and during installation a received a few messages saying "windows cannot copy 'xxx' file". I was finally able to get Windows XP installed however I had an issue installing my Ethernet driver as I would get a message saying "cannot find any inf files".
A member here mentioned it could be due to the CD-ROM drive having issues. Can this be the cause of all these issues? If so, how can I check my CD-ROM drive is working properly before re-installation?

Thanks.1st let us KNOW what exactly it says on this XP CD...or if it's a copy...
2nd..travel to the manuf. website and DLoad all fresh copies of the drivers...

#rd...see if you can borrow a known good DVD/CD drive and we'll take this step by step.As far as the XP CD, do you mean the XP installation CD? If so it just lists WindowsXP Service Pack 3 with ADVANCED Security and a few Windows components like IE and WMP.

As far as drivers, I am not aware of the manuf. as it doesn't have a label or icon anywhere. This PC was given to me as is and i'm not sure how to find out the info needed for my particular drivers.

As for the last question, I have a spare PC which has a CD drive but no DVD.What exactly does it say on the XP CD ? ?

To obtain info on the MACHINE you inherited DLoad Everest Home and or Speccy and run the scans...
They will tell you more than you need to know about the hardware you are dealing with and where to obtain drivers...

Lastly a CD drive will do for the reinstall if in fact it's a drive issue...WindowsXP Service Pack 3 with Advanced Security Technolgies - Internet Explorer 7.0 - Windows MEDIA Player 11 - For Windows Home Edition, Pro, Media Center Edition, and Tablet PC Edition

The Ethernet controller driver should be included in thast package...unless it's an adddon card. Here is the info:
http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb/content.php?S_ID=337

The Ethernet driver was not included in the package as far as I know.I would also like to mention, that when browsing EVEREST, I checked my CD-ROM info and it says INF File: cdrom.inf

It was the inf file issue I mentioned in my OP which I was concerned about as well.Quote

Would I be able to try this procedure with my current CD drive?

The CD_ROM is not having any issues reading and playing music CD's, the issue is just with my CD's not auto-playing when I insert them into the drive.
And on a side note, when I put in a USB flash drive to save some files, the flash drive did not open either although I did hear a beep type sound which means it was recognized by XP.

Solve : My hard drive has split in two and I don't know why or how to fix it?

Answer»

Hi,

All I know about computers is that they exist. I am completely stuck. I have XP.

I bought my samsung laptop about 2 years ago and it was all working fine, then a few months ago I ran out of space and went to Computer and under Hard Disc Drives it said (C:) and (D:) with 69.0GB space on each. Someone told me that meant my hard drive had split in two. I couldn't fix it, but just saved anything new into that (D:) drive. Now though, I have no room on the (C:) drive because it's all taken up with Program Files Program Data, Windows and Users. Literally all I have saved on (C:) is some music that I can't move because iTunes throws a hissy fit. That's only worth 8GB. Every single photograph, text document etc is stored on (D:). I now have a full (C:) and a nearly empty (D:)

My questions:

- How can I merge those discs to just have one whole place where everything is stored?
- How can I delete all the program data/files etc. I know they are probably needed, but why are they taking up so much room?? One file alone is 19.9GB
- If I can't merge them, how can I make the (D:) the default drive thingy?

Thank you so much for any help you can give

1) DO NOT MESS WITH THE PROGRAM/DATA FILES
2) You can disable System Restore (System Properties - System Restore). This will regain a LOT of space (NOTE - all restore points will be deleted immediately). Then re-enable it and change the system restore settings to a lower number.
3) You can download and use a program like EASEUS Partition Manager (http://www.partition-tool.com/) to merge the two partitions. Be sure to backup all critical data before performing any drive level functions.Hi,

What's the system restore? Sorry, I'm a complete novice, just treat me like a child! What are restore points? Will I loose all my pictures/videos etc I have saved? What's the system restore settings number bit? What does that do?

ThanksAt regular intervals, XP creates a "restore point". This is a "snapshot" of your registry and system files. In the event of a system failure, you can restore the system to the last restore point. Each restore point is large. The default SETTING for the amount of disk space (and thus the number of restore points) is larger than necessary. Go to Control Panel, System Properties, System Restore and disable System Restore and click on APPLY or OK. As soon as you do, all restore points will be deleted (none of your files will be effected). Then re-enable System Restore and in the settings lower it to about 3% of your available disk space. This should restore a great deal of space.

Even better, you can use disk imaging software (such as this: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp) on a regular basis and leave System Restore completely disabled.

SYSTEM RESTORE INFO:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-is-System-Restore
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspxAdditionally:

Drives just don't partition (split) themselves. It was probably like that all along, you just never noticed.Agreed...

However if they've used up approx. 140G there's alot more iTunes and stuff they probably don't need or could backup to CD/DVD...

Time for some general housekeeping.Quote from: georgiastar on December 14, 2010, 05:44:33 AM

- How can I merge those discs to just have one whole place where everything is stored?
You have one physical hard drive which is partitioned into two partitions. Windows RECOGNIZES each partition as a drive when you open My Computer. But, why merge them? Many experienced computer users prefer having their hard drive partitioned for various reasons.

If you know they are needed, which is DEFINITELY true, then why ask whether you can delete them. Of course, you can't delete them. If you did, your computer would not run.

Quote from: georgiastar on December 14, 2010, 05:44:33 AM
- If I can't merge them, how can I make the (D:) the default drive thingy?
Depends on what program you're using. Many programs allow the user to set the default location for STORING files created by the user. For example, in Microsoft Word, any drive and folder on a drive can be set as the default location. This is not a global setting enabled through Windows. You need to look in preferences and settings for programs you use for such a setting. Additionally, you can download http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=36
That will tell you the exact files that are using the most space on the drive.

I don't know why computer companies don't put the program files on the D: drive when they install windows to aviod this problem I always move My Documents and Program Files and occasionally even Documents and Settings to D: when I set up a computer for someone. This is also good if windows has a problem because you can just format C: drive and don't have to worry about loosing any personal data. Why am I tempted to say ignore the above POST; you really need to be more precise in what you're saying. Why would computer companies put program files on D when 90% or more of the hard drive is allocated to C, with D typically being reserved for a recovery partition? And, exactly how do you "move" programs to D? Your post implies that is as simple as moving My Documents, but it is not that simple. Moving program files from C to another partition is normally going to require uninstalling programs and then specifying the preferred partition as the location upon reinstalling the program. This is necessary to get Windows registry properly updated; it needs to know where programs files are installed. Quote from: Linux711 on December 14, 2010, 08:39:01 AM
I don't know why computer companies don't put the program files on the D: drive when they install windows to aviod this problem

Probably because:

A. there isn't always a drive D:
B. That would make the Program Files folder pointless.
C. Even if they decided to go against the options in the OS and install to drive D:, the program would still probably need to be reinstalled if the system drive were formatted.
D. Almost all installers let you choose an alternate location, defaulting to the program files folder.

Depends on the application. about 80% would require registry changes; but none of those changes are relating to the programs location, and they generally deal with the registration of COM components. Other programs don't use the registry at all. Component registration aside, applications always have default values they use if their configuration data isn't in the registry. OTOH, if the program had an installer it will probably still try to uninstall from the original location before the move.

Please read this. Lots more info needed.Just boot to an OS disk and choose the format option before installation. That will erase everything on your system drive.I received the following by PM.

I have a HP Pavilion a305w I think I got it in 02 or 03,it had a cd drive and I changed it and put a dvd drive in it.

It seems that the current OS came pre-installed and you now you want to clear your hard-drive without over-writing (deleting) your current OPERATING system?

Do you have an XP install or recovery disk for this machine? Does your hard-drive have a recovery partition? What condition leads you to want to format the hard-drive? Can you boot to the current system?

Most disk wipers will OVERWRITE everything on your hard disk, although some may be used to overwrite specific partitions, all should be used with care. Using an install disk to format can also overwrite the system partition prior to reinstalling the OS if you have an install disk.

Please respond via this thread so that other members, who may have intimate knowledge of your model pc, have the opportunity to add their advice from which all can benefit.

Solve : Help required with 'conime.exe'.?

'conime.exe' has started showing up inadvertently within the 'Start-up entries' & it reappears even on being disabled from running at Start-up!?

Help me to disable it on a permanent basis.

***Screenshot is attached for a better understanding of the issue.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Try this one first --> http://www.ehow.com/how_5171666_remove-conimeexe.htmlIt is used by windows and is important. it is there if and when an Asian language is used!!!. if it just appeared for no reason it is most LIKELY a virus???. if you have anti virus I would suggest using it immediately. cheers, MikeHello again!

I did run the full scan(before posting this topic) of Avira Antivir, SuperAntispyware & Trend Micro Housecall(Standalone app.).

It didn't find anything in regard to Conime.exe?

Secondly, why it has started showing up in the recent days only?..(probably linked to some Microsoft Windows XP updates....?..could it be?)

Finally, why can't I disable it on a permanent basis?

& YES.....

WHATEVER ehow.com article suggest, I couldn't find anything under the similar folder.

The only thing I found using 'Windows Search' may please be accessed through following screenshot.

Help & effort sincerely appreciated...

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Try changing value under registry.
Click Start, Run and type regedit, Ok.
Expand HKEY_Current_User, Expand AppEvents, Highlight Console.
Look for Name LoadConIme and right-click and choose Modify.
Change Value from 1 to 0. Click Ok.
Check again for any differences.
Input Method Editor is for typing in Chinese or other non-Roman Asian languages using a keyboard.

You are right. I am too vague. some very credible sites say it is a needed Microsoft program. And some other reliable sites say it is a bad thing.

Here is the most relevant I could find. Yes it is a normal program and yes it is something you should get rid of. You have to read it over to decide.
http://forum.kaspersky.com/lofiversion/index.php/t19964.html

The point being made here is invasive programs may start a process that the user does not WANT or need. And in some CASES Mal-ware will modify a known program and infect it. Only the later will be caught by your AV program. Unless the AV program can read your mind and know your intentions.right... because the most evil thing malware can do is start harmless programs that do nothing.

Solve : I upgraded to Spyware Doctor 2011 and now my speaker volume doesn't work?

Answer»

Hi--I'm new to this FORUM and would appreciate any HELP. I upgraded to Spyware Doctor 2011 and all of a sudden I can't un-mute my speakers. Furthermore this window pops up saying that "Volume Control Applet has stopped working" A problem caused the PROGRAM to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. I then tried to uninstall the upgraded VERSION of Spyware but then another window popped up saying that it has to wait until the program is closed before it uninstalls it. Can ANYONE help me with this please?!?! I have Vista.

Much thanks,
TamiReboot in safe mode.
Bring up Task manager.
Stop the program you want to remove.
Then uninstall it.

Works in XP

I just thought - maybe I have misunderstood the question - I supposed the OP wanted to know how to minimize Task Manager to the system tray / Notification Area - but he might be asking how to put a launcher there - personally I just have a shortcut to Taskmgr.exe in my Startup folder, and choose "start minimized" and since I have checked "HIDE When Minimized" it just sits there in the tray showing the CPU usage bar graph and I double click it when I want to use it for anything else.
thanks that helped a lot, now i have 2 ways that i learned.

Solve : Only hard drive (SATA) defaulting to "e" when trying to install Windows XP.?

Answer»

Hi,

So my hard drive died; I pulled it and replaced it with a solid state drive, which is the only hard drive in the system. I then ran the XP install disk and upon trying both options...one being to install Windows on this drive and the other being to format it, saw that it for some REASON displayed as the "E" drive. I have unplugged everything that I can think of, including a USB card and a multi-card reader, but it still gets formatted as the "e" drive. Any ideas on how to make it the "c" drive?

SheltonThis generally happens when an external device is plugged into a usb port during install. I read what you said, but recheck and make SURE there's nothing connected. Also boot back into setup and see if the old drive is still listed....a BIOS is sometimes easily confused...

If it is power down and DISCONNECT the new drive....while you're at it double-check which SATA connection it is on the MBoard (should be SATA1).
Do a few cold boots with no drive connected then re-do everything and power up...Allan and Patio,

Thanks to both of you, this ISSUE is resolved. I disconnected the printer and the new hard drive, then started twice, then reconnected the hard drive. Upon starting, it was recognized as the c drive. I appreciate your time and effort.

Sincerely,
SheltonExcellent...

Solve : Dialup Internet suddenly stopped working - can ping - but no web/email/IM?

Answer»

Hi,

This Windows XP SP2 desktop PC is connected to the Internet through a dialup connection.
The dialup connection connects just fine, but I have no Internet access while connected.
Other computers using the same dialup settings are still working great.

The owner states the problem began after a computer game crash and SUBSEQUENT hard reboot.

I tried IE, Firefox, Messenger, Thunderbird, etc.
All these programs fail instantly when attempting to connect, like they don't recognize that there is an Internet connection.

I can ping Internet IP addresses, but I can't ping site names like www.google.com.
I cannot connect to an IP address with IE, so this does not APPEAR to be just a DNS problem.

This dialup connection uses a proxy server (filter.voicenet.com:8241).
I have verified the proxy settings for the dialup connection are correct in IE and Firefox.
I have RESET the TCP/IP stack.
I also ran the Winsock XP fix tool.

Norton was installed, but I ran the Norton Removal tool to completely remove the software.
Windows Firewall is disabled.
No other security software is installed as far as I can tell.

I'm open to any ideas...

Thanks for your time,

KendallI would run an repair or clean install and start fresh if you need this up and running correctly quickly. Otherwise if you want to find out exactly what is wrong you can plug away at IE repair utility and other areas where the problem could be. I'd personally just start fresh by a repair install or clean build, as for it will fix all software PROBLEMS!Thanks for the reply.
That is the course of action I will most likely be taking.

Solve : Need more Choppy video help...?

Answer» HI!
I searched the FAQ's and READ the response to "Choppy video" questions. But it seems that the poster had some computer specific communication with "MasterMind"... I don't want to ask for special individualized help, but is there some GENERAL TROUBLE shooting I can do to help make my video quality not so choppy?

My video quality USED to be fine, then recently a friend opened one of those "free-music" websites and ever since then the video play has been choppy. The sound is not choppy, just the video.
Thanks!!!

Solve : Cursor problem while playing games?

Answer»

I really don't know exactly how to EXPLAIN this problem but will do my best so that you can understand it. I regularly play games where the cursor is CHANGED into one with the game theme like a star or a electrode wand. They are very slow and unstable. On one game I was able to right click to open Flash and move the slider to the right then a little to the left causing the cursor to change to the regular Windows pointer until I did SOMETHING in registry(I think). That is when the cursors BEGAN to seem unstable and slow. My favorite game is a puzzle game to match colored balls, these flicker terribly now and the whole game at a certain point begins to flicker. Do you have any idea what I can do to correct this? My grandchildren and friends have the same game program where we earn play money to shop with and this is how I earn the most for them and sure would like to get it fixed.
This problem is the main reason I finally reinstalled Windows XP SP3 on my Dell Dimension 4700 machine. I use IE8 and Firefox BROWSERS. The game acts the same in both as do the cursors. I have 4 gigs of memory
just added
I have Legacy Audio and Video
SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
Video Codecs are ROOT\MEDIA\MS_MMVID....I assume that is a Microsoft, correct?
I had more recent drivers until I reinstalled and they got removed I guess, They are nowhere to be found. In the drivers file ONBOARD is listed. I paid for the new ones but do not want to do that again. Do you have any suggestions. In past I installed some from the Microsoft site and that may be what these are.Am I looking for a Video upgrade/update or a Graphics update?

Solve : One Printer for Multiple Computers??

Answer»

how can i setup One PRINTER for Multiple Computers?no wireless. If not wireless, then by Ethernet.

But if you find wireless annoying, the other solutions bare not always easier.

Be aware that some printers have
1. An Ethernet connection
2. A USB connection

Do not think you can use both. One or the other.

Good news. Thee really are USB switches out there.
No network.
No wireless.
Works with any two PC running Windows and have USB.
Here is just one: (Video)
http://www.usbgear.com/USB-Sharing.html
Is that what you wanted?A USB switch is just what I need but I am wondering if there is a version that is automatic and will take the SIGNAL from EITHER connected computer on a first come, first served basis.Just Google Automatic USB2.0 Switch
and see if it is available in your area.

Or, if you like newegg:
Quote

The Iogear GUB211 USB 2.0 Printer Auto Sharing Switch enables two PCs and/or Macs to easily share one USB printer, multi-function printer, or USB device. No more plugging and unplugging between your computers. Simply send the PRINT job and the switch automatically makes the swap for you.

Two ways, assuming all computers are networked VIA a router:

1) Connect the printer to one of the computers and enable printer sharing, which will allow other computers to use the printer. Of course, this method requires the computer to which the printer is connected to be powered on.

2) If the printer is networkable, i.e. network-capable, connect it to your router via Ethernet cable. The method allows any of the computers networked via the router to use the printer without any other computer being powered on.

Solve : Slow performance etc. after re-installing XP... Need assistance.?

Answer»

Last week I had to reinstall XP when my PC began acting funny after deleting a few quarantined files in ESET.

The first time I tried re-installing, I got a few messages saying "cannot copy file" during installation.
After switching between two XP cd copies, I was able to get windows up and running. HOWEVER when I tried to install a certain driver using Driver Genius, I got a message saying "cannot find any inf files". I figured this had something to do with the "cannot copy file" messages during installation, so I decided to re-install again.
This time the OS installed without issue. However I got the same "cannot find any inf files" message when TRYING to install the driver, once again.
I left it as is and updated the rest of my drivers.

Here is my issue:

Ever since the re-installation, I have been having performance issues which are MAINLY internet related.
For example, a lot of websites (including this one) have a lot of lag or sluggishness when scrolling up or down the page. I have also noticed that image ads on webpages etc. can take a little long to load fully and sometimes not at all.
I have noticed some videos (Youtube etc.) do not stream smoothly like before. Also webpages are taking a while to load.

Can anyone help me narrow down the possible causes of all this new frustration with my PC? (And if possible, how to fix it)
I would GREATLY appreciate any help or advice.
Forget Driver Genius...

Travel to the Manuf. site and DLoad and install all appropiate drivers.
MBoard chipset drivers ALWAYS go 1st...Thanks for the reply patio.

I have done this yet I am still having the same issues. What exactly have you done ? ?patio -

I installed a 4-in-1 driver pack for my motherboard from here:
http://www.nodevice.com/driver/P4M266__IG_/get37398.html

I also forgot to mention that my PC's overall performance has decreased, only it's more evident when using the internet. Hopefully that can narrow down the causes a bit. Okay. After installing the chipset driver did you install the driver for your video card? And please describe EXACTLY what performance issues you are experiencing.

And HOW did you do the reinstallation of the OS (Exactly)? The drivers should only come from the manuf. site....

What MBoard is this ? ?patio-

Thanks for your assistance.
I am confident that my PC is now infected with a virus again. Either that or the virus is still present from before the re-install.

My PC has slowed considerably since posting this topic and now I am noticing explorer.exe and services.exe processes running which were not there before.

I will post a topic in the virus removal forum for help.
Thanks!

Solve : Computer stuck in part of its boot?

Answer»

I have a Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2.0, machine (HP Compaq dc7700p) "stuck" in part of its boot routine.

Further machine specs are:

RAM: 2 GB

Hard drive: 70.62 GB [SUM of C: and D:]

Current adware/spyware/virus programs: Symantec AntiVirus
[being used on a regular basis]

This HP machine is shared by multiple users in a public computer ROOM. I use it
for teaching, and try to fix when able to do so.

The present problem may be described as:

I found the machine "stuck" in a kind of partial boot cycle with the following stages:

1. HP Invent (BLUE) screen with F KEY options for setup (F10), network(F12), etc.

2. Intel BIOS Management Engine (black screen)

3. Windows XP splash screen

4. Monitor going to sleep message

5. RETURN to step 1, and repeat, indefinitely

Can this be fixed, and if so, how ?

Sincerely,

J. David

Solve : laptop won't boot from floppy or cd?

Answer»

I have an old COMPAQ PRESARIO 2100 laptop XP SP3 and it used to be ABLE to boot from cd . i was trying to boot to a live linux but it just ignores when i set the bios to boot from cd and goes on to boot from hard drive.

Ditto with floppy drive. I was trying to boot to ms dos with an ms dos startup disk CREED on the compaq but when i set the bios to boot from floppy it just ignores that and boots from the hard drive. it will not even boot from a windows disk

I even tried the return to factory image cds which i have successfully used in the past but won't boot from them. I was only testing to see would it boot not going to restore. Anyway it ignored them too.

I note from bios that it is set to have the hard drive detected automatically but no way to change that and was presumably like that when i could boot from cd. How do I test the bios ?Quote from: wildoscar on December 09, 2010, 10:59:55 AM

*should read ms dos startup disk created on the compaq If hard drive is detected in bios, that's a good thing. There should be no reason to alter that setting.

Whatever I want to boot from, I make it the primary boot device, I disable the rest of the boot devices. Did you try that ?

Are you trying to boot with another device because it won't boot into xp ?

i did not try disable other devices. how do you make t the primary boot device? i want to boot from live linux to access a floppy that cannot be accessed from xp. thanksQuote from: hcooke on December 09, 2010, 12:57:11 PM

Solve : Cant get back to Windows...?

Answer»

I got a new external harddrive and I was trying to make a backup with norton ghost. Everything seemed to be going ok and I got to the point where it said I need to restart and it was going to enter the whole DOS interface. Well, I think the problem is that my computer (a dell desktop) only has USB keyboard and mouse connections and they're not working. When I restart there is an option: Choose 1 to run the ghost thing, choose 2 to start windows. It won't let me choose 2. Then after several minutes it fails and the default says it will resume windows if no keys are hit... but it never does.

Is there a way to use the setup or boot menus before Norton ghost takes over to get into windows and uninstall this program?

Thanks! When the system first boots watch for a message on the screen that says PRESS F2 TO ENTER SETUP. At that point, press F2 (or whatever key it says). Let's see if the system recognizes the keyboard at that point. If it does, enter bios and look for a setting that says something along the lines of: Enable USB at boot. If you see that, enable it and reboot.

Worst case, borrow a ps2 keyboard.so I tried that LAST night and I can actually enter the setup mode. From there I entered menus that let me enable the USB ports. Then I'd restart but still have the same problem when ghost boots up.

What is a ps2 keyboard? I don't have any other place to plug in a keyboard or mouse on my computer...There are no PS2 ports on your system? Look again (in the back).

But it SOUNDS as THOUGH the system DOES see your keyboard so I'm really not sure what's going on. Boot to an XP CD and do a repair install (http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm)will this repair install make me lose all my files on the harddrive? No. When done properly a repair install will not affect any installed programs or settings either. Just carefully follow the instruction in the link I posted. Once you boot back into Windows you'll have to go to Windows Update and download a bunch of updates.

Solve : Obtaining XP Recovery Console on CD or Memory Stick?

Answer»

Why did you run chkdsk /p? The only thing you needed to run was chkdsk /R, but okay. And the reason you saw it go from 75% to 50% is that chkdsk /r RUNS 5 DIFFERENT scans. The percentages really don't mean much - it finished one scan and went on to the next.

Glad you're up and running. You now might want to back up all CRITICAL data in case the hd is on the way out.

Solve : reset windows password?

Answer»

HI All, we have a sharp x500 point of sale pc, unfortunatley it froze and when restarted it now REQUIRES a user name and password. before it just booted straight in. unfortunatley it does not have a cd drive and strangeley enough on boot up i cannot get it to go to bios to use a usb crack to clear teh password, i have tried all the usual combos of keys to get to bios and tried every password i can think of to get into windows. It has a PHOENIX bios as i see that flick by. if you PRESS the esc on boot up it briefly says SETUP AVAILABLE but i cant get any key to do anything. If the problem is a bios password, we cannot help you. Sorry.

But if it's the administrator password, just do a Google search for "lost administrator password"
