Solve : I dont have a Dvd Decoder installed on my computer??

Answer»

Ok so my computer recently crashed and I was forced to install the operating system again as well as the drivers. The problem is that I was trying to view a DVD movie on my computer but I was unable to. Before my computer crashed I could view DVD movies with no problem. Anyways when I insert the dvd into my computer and select window media player or my media center to play it a message COMES up telling me I dont have a dvd decoder installed in my computer, Technical message: There are no MPEG-2 decoders installed on this computer. My first and second link to pictures contain what drivers I am able to install from my driver and utilites CD that came with my computer. My third and fourth picture link show the message that windows media player and media center give me.

P.S. My computer is a XP and the model is DM061.
Also the dvd slot I am using says Dvd movie on the plastic
THANKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSShttp://www.videolan.org/vlc/But dont i have a devd decoder on my recovery disk?Say again?I mean that a dvd decoder dosent come in the cd recovery disk?
In otherwords the top 2 pictures contain no dvd decoder in them? Long story SHORT, I don't use WMP at all, because of problems like yours.
Why would I SPEND time on downloading and trying tens of codecs, if I can use VLC PLayer, which will play almost anything.

Solve : disabled start up?

Answer»

i got a application that should be running on start up. (win XP)
done !

but this application can be easy disabled by user, by pressing shift+enter repeatedly on WINDOWS start up.
i put my program on start up folder or registry. both are the same way.

when i put it on service, it runs hidden. it can't be done.

how to make my application run very early on windows start up ? What is the application?BILLING application for internet cafe.
people can use computer freely, without pay the bill ...
the billing application doesn't runQuote from: Allan on December 06, 2010, 11:58:05 AM

What is the application?
called billing explorer

this application has billing explorer client and server.

the client will start on start up, and show the login page to use the computer. when the user login, the login name and start time will be recorded and showed on billing explorer server on the OPERATOR computer ( other computer). The billing explorer show the bill based on user duration.

my problem, that some user COULD disable the billing explorer client at windows start up, by pressing shift + enter repeated rapidly during start up.
i put start up on start up folder and registry, both can be disabled by this way.

any body help me ?What about a batch file? Set it up to start 1 minute after the machine comes up. This way they can hit any keys they want but later the program will start anyway.

Also does this program start a service on the machine? If not you can look into adding one and forcing it to restart everytime they try to stop it.

Last you are not letting them be admins on the machine right?

You really should start from the beginning and learn how to properly setup a Windows machine that can be locked down for Internet Cafe purposes....doing it app by app you will be chasing your tail for quite sometime...

I have tried to restart again but the massage persistWhat is new or different since the last time everything worked PROPERLY (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

As soon as you power on the system begin tapping the F8 (function) key. That should take you to a boot option screen. Try "last known good configuration". If that doesn't work try safe mode.thanks allan

They ALL use F8. We're talking about the windows boot option screen, not the one provided by the BIOS to select a boot medium. (thus the "Last Known Good Configuration" option). Now if we wanted to guide them in displaying their computer-specific Boot media selection option we'd need to know their model number, as the varous models do indeed have different keys to access that option screen.Quote from: Allan on December 07, 2010, 07:02:30 AM

I'm talking about the exact same option screen. I've got three Gateways at my house and they all use F5. F8 does absolutely nothing on these computers during the boot process. As a result, I had this computer for about two months before I finally figured out how to get into the boot options (I thought my timing was somehow off).Quote from: CBMatt on December 08, 2010, 06:36:42 AM

That's really interesting.... first time I've heard that. Like BC I thought this was an OS specific option, not a hardware specific option. Thought F5 WOULD usually take you to safe mode.Quote from: Allan on December 08, 2010, 06:41:53 AM
Like BC I thought this was an OS specific option, not a hardware specific option.

The keyboard scan-code is quite literally hard-coded into NTLDR. Although hardware manufacturers modifying the boot loader would not surprise me, either.

It might be relevant to note that the message "the previous attempt to restart from previous location failed" Is when a XP machine fails to resume from hibernation.

I assume the OP forgot the rather important details of the menu that appears as part of this message; either "Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu " or "continue to system restart". The former option can be chosen to delete hiberfil.sys and continue booting.Quote from: Allan on December 08, 2010, 06:41:53 AM

F5 normally does do that, but on all three of these computers, it goes to the boot options. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be a key that goes directly to Safe Mode...at least not on my desktop. I haven't tested every function key on the laptops.

I never thought much of it and have always assumed it was some sort of Gateway feature, but I just checked their support pages and I currently can't find anything that supports my personal experiences. Makes this sound like an isolated incident, but these are three different Gateway models, one of which was just given to me recently. I'll look into it further once I've had some sleep.Quote from: CBMatt on December 08, 2010, 06:57:51 AM

F5 and F8 both bring you to the options screen; However, in Windows 9x it would take you directly through to safe mode.

Actually, the F5 and F8 options even then were standby's from DOS 5 and 6; F8 would prompt you for each command in config.sys and autoexec.bat, and F5 would skip them entirely during boot. With NT4 and earlier you had to use spacebar during boot to bring up the last known good/advanced options menu; Windows 2000 changed it to fall more in line with the consumer OS's.

So, really, you can use either F8 or F5, sine they both bring you to the boot options menu.

Solve : kdcom.dll?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba laptop Satellite A105-S3134. Running WINDOWS Xp media center.
System had a virus and Malware so ran Malwarebytes and removed all FOUND problems. McAfee is antivirus. Turned off system and next day will not boot.
Will GO into cmos-yes
Will not read CD Rom or boot from.
Will not go into safemode but will hang on kdcom.dll
Have no way to get to dos or repair
NOw will not go into boot menu (F8)
When I go into (F12) and select cd rom it tries to load with Intel boot agent but then goes to error of Bad media or blank screen.
I would not think that changing out memory or HD would make any difference but not for sure.
Any insight would be appreciated. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/253183-45-safe-mode-boot-hangs-load-kdcomThanks for the reply but I cant access anything so cant follow DIRECTIONS given from Toms Hardware. I have changed out memory and reseated HD as well. I am suspecting a bad cd rom but being a laptop I dont have another to try with. If I could access Cd rom and get into repair COUNCIL or use a linex Cd I could replace files as necessary. At this point I cant even format and replace OS. Am looking for new or borrowed Cd rom.

Solve : when moving window across screen is followed by trails?

Answer»

This is such a simple thing to correct but I cannot locate any HELP that recognizes this problem. I had it on the old Windows 98 and got help from mocrosoft. That was so long ago that I don't remember what I did to correct it. It was called ghost back then. Do you recognize what I am describing?
When dragging one window across another trails follow. It is very annoying and I know this should not happen. I have set Screen refresh rate from 60 hertz to 70 HERTS. 75 seemed to bother my eyes. Could this be the problem? I have the LCD monitor. Windows XP SP3 OSLCD monitors should be set to 60hz. I don't believe this issue has anything to do with the monitor though....

If what your describing is that, when dragging one window over another, little "pictures" of the top window appear in the bottom window, then this is caused by the bottom window not repainting.

So the question to ask is "why isn't it repainting"?

Does this happen with all programs? If so, it would appear that your PC is simply underpowered, or having it's power gobbled up by something else on the system- one candidate, for example, is malware.

For the curious- the cause is rather down-level. Every window has a function that windows calls- it basically tells it, "hey, the user clicked on you" or "hey, you need to repaint". what causes the "ghosted" images is that when windows moves one window over another and exposes part of a window beneath it, it sends that windows function a message saying "hey, you need to repaint this area". if the program is busy, however, the message is not received right away- instead, it's added to a queue- sort of a "to-do" list for the window. This can happen if the program is doing some intensive task- reading files, saving a big document, etc. However- as you said, this is not normal behaviour and should really only occur under specific circumstances.

If it's happening with your windows, and this is a recent occurrence, I'm inclined to believe you may be a VICTIM of an infection.

To determine wether this is the case you can visit the malware section of this site:

follow the guides posted here and then make a new thread/post in the spyware removal section here; you'll need to post the logs from hijackthis, Super Anti-spyware, and Malware bytes Anti-malware.

pat,
How much memory (RAM) do you have installed?
What is the speed of your processor?

If you don't know, click Start then right click on My Computer and select Properties at the bottom of the drop down menu. This will bring up your system properties. It will tell you the speed of your processor and the amount of RAM that you have. This might also occur if a suitable DRIVER for the graphics card isn't installedDid this just start? If so, what is new since it last worked properly? If you reinstalled the OS you need to install the graphics driver. Also check System Properties - Advanced Tab - Performance Button and put a tick in "show window contents when dragging"OK is graphic driver the same as the monitor driver? I did install a newer Monitor driver and uninstalled it today thinking this was the cause. Yesterday and this morn I ran MABM, ESet, IOBit 360, Windows Advanced Care, Ran a through Secunia. No malware, virus was found. Everything is updated. Did a run through all the services to make sure they are set for optimun performance of machine. If I made any changes Windows Advance System Care CORRECTED it.
If graphics driver is something I should check into I will try that. My machine is 2002 and all the drivers are that old or older.
This started a few days ago and is worse at times. I am running enough ram for what i use it for but do need to remove some photos for better performance but have removes many the past few weeks, so that should not have suddenly caused this.
Have Pentium processor. 512 MB of Ram
Tick has always been on "show window contents when dragging"
Other than the graphics driver, which I will check into, I am beside myself as to what else it could be. i do dmaintenance almost daily to make sure it is running without problems.
Thank you for your reply.graphics driver = video card driver. I checked all my Hardware drivers and they all look OK. It says that there is no problem with them. I specificly checked the Video Codecs. Is there any other way that I can check the graphics driver or card?
As a results of all this I did reset some features that reduced the amount of processors running and I am very happy about this. Machine is much quieter. I am amazed at this improvement.Quote from: patbrew on March 11, 2010, 09:14:54 PM

I specificly checked the Video Codecs.

That won't help, what you really need to do is check the Graphics Card Driver, Video Driver or whatever. But it's a driver that is the important thing, a codec decrypts DVDs and stuff, a Video Driver tells the PC how to use the Graphics Card which is what tells the monitor what to display.

Navigate your way to your Display Adapter's Information:
Start > Right-Click on My Computer > Manage > Device Manager (in the list on the left under 'System Tools') > Display Adapters

Here should be at least one Display Adapter, and they will all likely share the same name. Can you tell me the name of your graphics card please? E.g ATI Radeon 9200 or whatever yours is called.

Also, if you're connected to the internet then you might want to try:

Double-Click on the first Display Adapter in the list > Driver > Update Driver... > Yes, this time only > Next > Next (again)

This should update your driver automatically.Thank you Veltas. I apologize for taking so long in getting back with you. I have tried to solve the problem myself to no avail. The Graphics card is :
Radeon X300 Series
ATI 6.14.10.6476
I tried a newer driver :
ATI Radeon X300X550X1050 Series
8.593.100.0

But did not seem to make any better so I switched back to the original one.Quote
Tick has always been on "show window contents when dragging"

Untick this...and re-boot and see.Thank you so much. I did not know that is what was doing it. I can live with that, it is so minor. I do appreciate your kind help and much wisdom.

Solve : Some Windows updates won't install...?

Answer»

I am having a terrible time with some Windows updates. They load but will not install. This started several months ago. shortly after I installed Service Pack 3. I don't know if that is just a coincidence, but I thought I should mention it. Most updates do load and install, but these four continually refuse to install...

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-8/1209601/Updates.jpg

I have Googled every conceivable solution I have found on the Microsoft website and elsewhere, but nothing works. I'm getting so sick of seeing the same constant updates, and not being able to install them. I'm starting to wonder what good stuff I am missing. Can anyone help with this? Any response is appreciated.

Secondary information(only) --> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798Patio, I included a link to a screenshot of the offending updates in my original POST. I was so mad at the time, I decided to do this figuring I would type in the wrong numbers...

Jason2074, I will give the first a try. I do not remember this page but, I found a solution for registering several .dlls at one time, but it did not work. I don't recall if that .dll was among them. As it will take a day (dial up) to download them again, I will get back to you then. Thanks guys.Well...I think I opened another can of worms. I saw that the common denominator of the updates was the Net Framework 3.5. I decided to follow some advice about trying to download these updates, one at a time, from the Windows Catalog site and to install them from the desktop. When I did, I got a MESSAGE stating that it could not install them because the application they were associated with did not exist on my computer?! (You'd think Microsoft would tell me this in the first place) According to the Add/Remove Program list, the .Net Framework 3.5 is rarely used, but is on my computer. What gives? Can someone give me advise as to what to do next? Perhaps uninstall the Net Framework and reinstall? I'm sure if I can get this Net Framework to be recognized, the updates will install.Make sure all versions of .NET Framework are installed:
.NET Framework 1.1
.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1

BTW, .NET Framework versions do not supercede each other.
Who knows which one it really is looking for.The only one not showing on the add/remove programs list was the Net framework 1.1. I downloaded it, but when I tried to install it, it gave the same message as before, stating that Net Framework was not on my computer. According to the add/remove list, it is. Hoping that it was just turned off, I went to the Windows Components Wizard to check, but it was not even on the list. I am at a loss as to what to do next. I'm told that more programs these days require the Net Framework, so I must have it. Any ideas? Perhaps an operating SYSTEM that works?Remove all of them. Then reinstall them.I GUESS I'll have to try that. It will take awhile on dial-up, so I'll have to get back to you. Thanks guys!Thank god I've found this. It happened to my older pc and I will try the steps outlined here. Thank you!

Solve : CD ROM Drive Died?

Answer»

Hello,

I was in the middle of reformatting my hard drive with Windows XP and my CD Rom drive died. So bought a new one and installed it but now it keeps going back to where the setup started but doesn't recognize my CD drive. How do I get my computer to recognize the new drive so I can finish loading Windows? Please help...I can't afford a new computer right now! Is this an INTERNAL or external drive? If external you could be dealing with USB driver issue. I had a similar issue with upgrading my Toshiba laptop back in 2003 with XP in which the Toshiba was one of the thin models with all drives PLUGGED in externally to it, and all I had was a USB CD/DVD drive. Problem was that part way through the installation of XP, the microsoft driver is incorrect for the USB optical drive and it fails.

If this is an internal drive did you make sure that if its an IDE drive that you have the correct jumper setting for Master(M), Slave(S), or Cable Select (CS)?You need to boot to the OS CD to RESOLVE this issue...then continue witht the clean INSTALL...

I can go to yahoo mail, shine food, and other sites with no PROBLEM and also go to facebook on other computers. can someone tell me what is causing this?Be sure you have the latest Java Script updates from SUN Microsystems, also be sure to have latest MS Updates for ActiveX etc, and be sure to have all FLASH updates from Adobe.com . Facebook uses LOTS of these features. Also you can try F5 key if the pages fail to load every once in a while to refresh the webpage.Quote from: DaveLembke on December 04, 2010, 02:50:27 PM

Be sure you have the latest Java Script updates from SUN Microsystems
Java is a statically-typed language designed by sun that compiles to java bytecode and runs in a virtual machine.

JavaScript is the in-browser client-side, dynamically typed language usually used to perform validation on input and provide pointless effects.

Also... I'm not sure if Facebook uses java. (But it's always best to make sure it's up to date, I was having a problem with a java game recently until I updated my virtual machine)

Quote
also be sure to have latest MS Updates for ActiveX
I'm fairly certain Facebook doesn't use ActiveX controls. People realized that they were pointless to use in a WEB page 10 years ago Also, you can't really "UPDATE" ActiveX, SINCE it's really just COM which is the standard by which components can communicate. You can update the components, of course, but I'm fairly certain that facebook doesn't use them.

Not meaning to "rip" you or anything, of course. The concept of updating is what we're after here.

Solve : Netbook XP re-instal?

Answer»

Ok. I have posted this question on a couple of other forums and it seems people don't read the whole question/explination before answering. They seem to give common answers that BARELY fit my issue. So all I ask is that you read the whole question/explination thanks. (And I'm really not trying to be rude so I hope this request doesn't get lost in translation).

Ok. yes I did something retarded to my computer. I deleted a partition. I have XP and Linus installed on my netbook. I decided I don't need linux on the net book so I thought by deleting the partition it would free up some space. WRONG!! After REBOOTING it gave me a GRUB ERROR and would not let me do anything else. Nothing. Not go into save mode, no re-install option nothing but let me go into BIOS. I went into BIOS trying to just suck it up and re-install. Nope, wont' let me do anything.

So I changed my boot order sequence so it would boot from USB. I was going to attempt to find out how to make a bootable USB drive but after doing this and re-booting the screen won't come on.

Is there a way to install XP on the hard drive while it's in a enclosur. I have the hard drive out and in a enclosure. I plugged it into my main computer and I can access it but not sure what to do now.

Maybe the screen just decided to crap out on me I don't KNOW. But I want to get the hard drive straight then figure out if the screen is dead or not. Can someone give me some explicit instructions on this? I would greatly appreciate it. Have a good night. Quote

How did you go about making the flash drive bootable?
What program did you put on the flash drive?
What do you mean "the screen won't come on"? What happens? Can you still get into BIOS?

Solve : Blocked out of Windows Xp by 14 yrold. Please help. Can't log on.?

Answer»

My 14 year OLD got mad at her brother, and decided to block everyone out of their computer. I'm a beginner, so I don't know about this things. She has made herself administrator. How do I override her, make myself administrator, and keep this from happening in the future. Personally I would suggest packing it up and putting it away for a couple of days. That might put a little bit of respect back in the kids.

You should be able to boot into safe mode, just use the admin account in safe mode. You can force CHANGE the password for the admin acct by use of a BOOTABLE Linux CD Password Changer, but you will NEED to burn that to a CD then boot that system off of this disc and then follow the text menu options to force change.

Thanks, amazingly that worked. I had tried changing the port to 110 and that didn't WORK. That's what I love about these boards, the information that is available.

If you are going to change Power option properties under Power schemes from Portable/Laptop to a Desktop, make sure to hit Apply.
Quote
It use to go into hibernation on its own to save power
True, only if you enable those features... Windows power options or some in BIOS SETTINGS. If your machine is having trouble coming out of hibernation probably for some hardware or system COMPONENTS, then its best not to used it.
Quote
I thought they all did this
Yes. Its a users' option for system loading times out of period of inactivities and saving current state of work at the same time minimizing power consumption. This is not a solution, but giving direction where you could check for issues:

*********************************************************

If you know how to fiddle with registry, check what is your Registry value says

Note: Playing around with registry can cause OS to stop WORKING.

The registry settings can be found at "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg]"

And the code may look like, just verify EVERYTHING is there, DO NOT change

**************************

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg]
"CurrentPowerPolicy"="2" ;Power Scheme (Default="0")
; "0" = Home/Office Desk
; "1" = Portable/Laptop
; "2" = Presentation
; "3" = Always On
; "4" = Minimal Power Management
; "5" = Max Battery

*******************

The Advanced and Hibernate options are stored in the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\GlobalPowerPolicy\Policies

****************************************************************

This issue could be related to your ACPI driver as well. So reinstall chipset and base drivers first.

Of course, instead of using registry editor one could feasibly- just possibly, if the circumstances were crazy enough to ALLOW it... use the UI features BUILT IN to windows to change them. Like, oh, say the power options dialog mentioned previously.

Solve : Mess with Installation?

Answer»

Hi there ,
I was uninstalling Xp due to some issues with it, I then started loading Windows ME, somewhere in the middle it said there were errors and wasnt working, it then restarted and now is coming up, saying , only work in windows version ms dos 8.0, cant get by it any way. Any suggestions on how to fix it?? thanks!!!Which make and model of computer? Does it have a recovery system?

Do you have a Windows ME bootdisk with which to partition and format the drive before installing?

What issues were you having with XP?

I had too many issues with ME and INSTALLED XP.

What are your computer's hardware specifications?

There may yet be an easy remedy.Did you attempt to format the drive first? That is the only way of uninstalling XP. To make ME work, your hardware MUST support it - have drivers for it, etc?

Computer make/model and what your PURPOSE in this EXERCISE is would be helpful. Do you have the WIndows CD for what you are trying to load?I hope this is the info on the computer your asking. I do not have a windows me bootdisk, I have TRIED my 98 disk, I have tried a CD, cant get past the black screen with the ms dos 8.0. I have tried typing different commands to format, nothing working. If thsi isnt the info you need let me know, kinda hard to get it off my computer right now.
thanks for your timeGo towww.bootdisk.com and download the appropriate file for Windows ME. Double click on it to make a correct boot floppy. Rund FDISK and delete the partition(s) on your drive. This may require option 4 non-DOS partition, if you were using NTFS with XP.

Then choose option 1 Make primary partition and make it active. Reboot and run FORMAT C:/u/s to format the drive for WinME. Then you are ready to install from your ME CD.Thanks so much, I am going to give it a shot, Ill let you know what happens, thanks againPlease do post back. We always like to hear how the story ends.

Solve : Is it possible to format just one partition??

Answer»

Sorry if this is a nooby question. My friend, who only speaks a LITTLE english (that's why i'm here instead) needs to retrieve some DATA from her hard drive which is partitioned, and hopefully get her comp working again as soon as possible. Windows XP pro won't start up, saying something about failed boot from hard disk (?? sorry not 100% sure what it said), whatever mode we tried to start it in. BUT earlier on it had started but ran VERY slowly and quickly froze, forcing us to restart from the power button. Then magically it began not even starting at all.

So I figured maybe we could delete XP and install W2k on that partition. Because she doesn't have any boot disks, cds etc. (lost them all or just borrowed the cd off a friend i'm not sure), I thought this could perhaps help? But yeah my basic question is can you format a partition while keeping those valuable files in the other section, and how, without having the XP cd?

Very sorry about the state of this question, it's a bit all over the place (it's 3am here and im *censored* tired) but I'd appreciate any advice so I could help my friend. Thanks!Use another computer to burn a KNOPPIX CD and boot directly to it. If the drive is mountable you can retrieve the files using the K3B burning program.

To format you could try using RC.ISO which is a bootable XP Recovery Console.

What are you going to install with no CD?Thanks that's really helpful and I'll try it out. She has the W2k cd so she will use that OS as the new one.If there is only one partition I don't know that you can install Win2000 OVER XP as it would be a downgrade. If you can, I'm not sure what would happen.
\
It would be better to boot with a Linux Live CD and send them to another computer using a wired network on both, as in both on the same router.ben11..... If the hard drive has more than 1 partition.......Eg C: , F: , G: all on the same drive .......and the O/S is on C: ........you should be able to format just the C partition .......however all data on that drive will be lost . Am I to assume that all the valuble data is not stored on C drive ( the one with the O/S on it ?
BTW is the O/S (xp pro ) a legal copy ?

But now that listing isn't there.

What happened? How can I GET that listing back?

Also I have been having a terrible time the past few WEEKS with my COMPUTER.

When I turn the computer on

It will go through the entire startup and IE appears (I have IE set to start on start up.)

BUT then the computer will automatically restart. Sometimes it restarts two or three times. (I haven't touched anything on the computer at all.)

Even when it doesn't restart I'll surf the net for a few minutes and the computer will freeze.

I have also played Windows Media Player 9 and it will cut out and restart the computer.

I have run virus scans with AVG, Norton and Panda Scan and no viruses have shown.

Solve : XP boot and program launch problem?

Answer»

Hi. I'm running Windows XP Home and have recently run into problems with boot-up and program launching. Basically, Windows takes for ever to boot up (the BIOS screen appears in the process), then when it does finish, each individual command or program launch will also take far too long. However, once the program or command has been executed one time the computer runs fast and completely normally with that program, even if you CLOSE it and open it again. In other words, if I keep my PC permanently on it works FINE with any command that has previously been DONE. But if I switch off, attempt to open a new program or LARGE image file, it runs very slowly. Is there any solution other than the big headache of re-formatting and spending hours reconfiguring everything again? P.S. I did a defrag, which took more than 24hrs. Windows then went into ChkDsk mode, which took 3 days!...and things are still the same as before. Thanks.Open Device Manager...
Right clik primary and secondary IDE controllers and select Properties...
Is either one of them in PIO mode ? ?

If so change it to DMA or UDMA if available and re-boot.
This is caused by 3 or more consecutive read/write failures.

If in fact this is the case DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site.
A new HDD may be in order...Many thanks. I checked and they are both is 'DMA if available' mode. Still worth trying the free diagnostics?I would...you never know.
At least PIO is not the issue...run the test then we can NARROW it down further.

Solve : Help..cannot access hard drive...may have enabled microsoft BitLocker????

Answer»

My 13 yr old daughter was on the laptop, we have a Dell Vostro 1500, when she said she needed help.
Now the screen says "Dell MediaDirect Express cannot access your hard drive. This may be because you have enabled Microsoft BitLocker (Drive Encryption). MediaDirect Express is not accessible when Microsoft BitLocker is enabled."
I have no idea what she did. She says she didn't do anything. There is an exit button, and when you push it the computer turns off. When you turn it back on it looks like its working, but then it goes to the same screen with the above message. It never makes it to my homescreen.
I have windows XP. I use verizon as my internet provider. If you could help please let me know.Seems to be a comon problem with media direct,
hold the "home" (media direct) button while pressing Power on button, this should force it to boot to XP.
As for a permanent fix for the problem try a google search.I tried that... It beeped loudly and then went to same screen. I turned it off. I tried it again, it beeped loudly but now there is a blue screen, it says: a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. There is more info. about disk space and drivers, and checking with hardware vendor.
Technical information stop: 0x0000008e
Nv4_mini.sys-Address f6cb8aeb..
The end says: beginning dump of physical MEMORY

Contact your system administrator or tech support group for further assistance.

I did not type everything as it is very long. But I can not turn the computer off now.

oh dear !!, remove the battery and un plug the mains power, this will cause the pc to shut down.
do you have the dell re-instalation disk's that came with the pc?
If you do then you need to do a "factory restore"
This will restore the pc back to the condition it was in when new, unfortunatly when you do this you will loose all your personal files / photos / music / movies etc and any programes that you have installed.
Look in your owners manual for a more detailed description of how to do it. If you don't have your manual go to the Dell WEB site where you can download it.
This is the only other option I have been able to find to cure the problem.

**READ YOUR MANUAL BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT THE RESTORE**email address as screen name = much spam coming your way.

In general, a complete re-install of Windows is the solution. Are you quite SURE you have told us the whole story?
I really can not think of anything else. My daughter was using the computer all day for school. We started an online school. She was studying in her room when she asked for help. When I came in the screen with the first message was up. There was a little box with the word exit in the corner. When pushed the computer shuts down. Once there was another screen, black with a guy running, but it flipped so fast I could not see it. My daughter said she had seen that screen before. She insists she didn't hit anything. As for the new directions,..the computer was off, I hit the on button and the button that says home. It beeped loudly. But it did the same thing . When I tried it the second time I hit the same two buttons only hit home a couple times instead of holding it down. That is all I can think of. Did I totally wreck the computer? As I said it is not MINE, I am borrowing it for my daughters classes.Don't panic, computer is not wrecked

Put it where?

I think the OP wants to change the sky from dull grey to a blue sky by using a second photograph (with a blue sky) and using said blue sky to change another photograph with a dull grey sky.

So sky from photo 2 to be used as the sky colour in photo 1.Basic steps would be:

1. gamma correction (if possible) to brighten the photo
2. copy photo to new layer
3. on new layer, SELECT the sky (use MAGNETIC lasso or whatever).
4. feather edges of selection
5. colourise the selection
6. change the opacity of the colourised layer until it blends with the layer below and the sky is the colour you like

There are many many other ways of doing this kind of thing and many tutorials out there that can help.Quote from: Guzeppi on December 31, 2011, 09:17:00 AM

Still, the boot-up screen comes up with the WindowsXP/ubuntu choice.

Solve : Access Denied when Renaming File/Folder?

Answer»

Sometimes when I try to rename a folder, I got an error of:

Access is denied.
Make sure the DISK is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

While I'm sure the files in the folder is not in use by any PROGRAM or write protected, it's usually solved by restarting Windows.

Is there a way we can check what program/process is actually locking access to the folder renaming?easy way would be AVG PC Tuneup 2011
Advanced tools / Locked files
All you need to do is type the name of the file that is locked and it will find it for you.
You could also unlock it, but that way all the related files that are running would be terminated/closed.
Also you could see all the related files in the "Locked by" tab

EDIT: This was not what you asked :/
Hard way is "Task manager", you would need to know what program that file/folder is related to and close that file/folder.

you can use the handle tool from sysinternals, something like this:

Code: [Select]handle | find /i "C:\path\to\folder"
which ought to give you the process(es) with files in that folder open.

Another option is to use the SysInternals Process Explorer tool for the same function. The difference is Process Explorer is a GUI app so might be a better solution depending on your skill level.

With process Explorer, first either run it as an admin, or after starting it you can choose File->Show details for All Processes, which will also run it as an administrator. Now you can use the Find->Find Handle or DLL option. Enter the Folder name in the Handle or DLL substring field, and choose search. You'll get a listing of all the processes that have open handles within that folder.

Also I'd like to point out that AV applications are notorious for this type of thing. Thanks Shimal and BC Programmer.

I'll try it next time.Hi BC_Programmer,

So now I got this folder name New Folder in one of the directory, which I edited the photos inside with Photoshop.
After I'm done editing and copy the photo elsewhere, leaving it an empty folder, I cannot delete it.

I've closed Photoshop.
When I run Process Explorer and search for the folder, the only process accessing it is explorer.exe

I close the windows explorer and reopen, no luck. Not sure if this would help, but I have seen it recommended on this forum. Never had a chance to use it as yet.

Solve : remove unwanted entries in add/remove programs applet?

Answer»

Hi all. I'm tuning up a pc for a friend whose kids have installed

numerous trial games, itunes, music oasis, etc., and other misc. crap.

Got most of it to my liking except this: can't get rid of 2 entries in

the Add/ Remove Programs applet in Control Panel (itunes and music

oasis). Here's what I've done so far:

Searched the web high and low and tried every suggestion offered to no

avail, so I'm trying as many forums as I can keep track of. There are

a lot more sharper minds than mine out there.

In Regedit went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Current

Version|Uninstall and removed all the entries I wanted, then rebooted,

went back into Add/Remove and itunes and music oasis are still there

Opened C:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf, but the 2 entries aren't even listed

Someone suggested using Tweakui, but, as far as I can TELL, that only

removes the applets in Control Panel (unless I'm missing something

there)

Installed a program called Add Remove Program Cleaner, but the 2

offending entires aren't listed in there either

Ran Hijack This>Misc. Tools>Unistall Manager, and the entries aren't

there either (no big surprise there either)

And, finally, reinstalled itunes and music oasis, then rebooted,

uninstalled them again, and the entries are still in the Add/Remove

Programs list

This is starting to irritate me.

Thanks in advance for any new suggestions as I'd LIKE to get this thing

back to him cuz he needs to watch the farm markets tomorrow a.m. if he

canMaybe I'm missing something, but typically the way to remove entries from Add/Remove is to uninstall the program, not fiddle with the registry.

Unless for whatever reason you WANT the program to remain installed and the entry to be hidden. Sounds to me like the programs are "repairing" the uninstall data.

Or, you uninstalled them, but their entries remained for whatever reason. Could be that a "update" program (apple likes to stick those all over windows machines) or one of their various background services is restoring the key.

No doubt you already found this.

Also, you can use CCleaner to attempt to remove the entries manually. Thanks for replying BC_Programmer. I concur that to remove entries in Add/Remove is to uninstall the prog. there, but when I got the pc the orphaned entries were missing the installers, so the prog. wouldn't uninstall in the normal manner. One of their grandkids had been using the pc on the sly and things were totally amuck.

I do pc tune-ups quite regularly for lots of people and have done so for yrs. (from Win95 to Win7) so I have a pretty good idea of what to do to get them back in shape again, but I'm by no means an expert. I have Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bing Bar Platform, itunes, and music oasis entries left in Add/Remove that I'd like to get rid of. I know it won't hurt the performance of the pc for these to remain there, but it irks me that I can't get rid of them and there MUST be a solution to this that'd be very useful to me for future pc work.

I've disabled ALL services in services.msc relating to these offending progs. and Task Manager doesn't show any references to them either. I've been to the link u provided and followed all the instructions there to a tee and used Revo Uninstaller Pro and removed LOTS of entries with it. Thanks for providing it anyway.

Naturally, CCleaner, Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, Superantispyware, Windows Defender, and an online Trendmicro Housecall scan were the things I did and everything is clean with those now.

The fact is that the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall is the only place the applet looks. Either you aren't deleting the proper entries or something is adding them back, otherwise they wouldn't be enumerated. Remember you have to delete the entire key, you can't just delete a few of the values within the key. And you'll have to look inside ALL of the keys,(including the ones like {CC8BA866-16A7-4667-BA0C-C494A1E7B2BF}, and find the ones with the DisplayName that equals what you want to remove.or you could try revo uninstaller: a link to the program is:http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Revo-Uninstaller.shtml its a old one but the program is still the same and it is now freeware.
Completely Uninstall Programs And More With Revo Uninstaller

Don’t you hate it when you try to uninstall a program it either does not include an uninstaller or when using Add / Remove Programs in Windows, there are several traces of the software left? It is definitely one of my bigger pet peeves … just check out my iTunes uninstall rant. I came across a cool little program the other day that claims to do a much better job of uninstalling applications and all of the tidbits and left-overs associated with them. Revo Uninstaller.

When first launching Revo the first thing I noticed were all of the additional features not included with Window’s Add / Remove utility.

Here I am going to show the process of uninstalling an unwanted toolbar from a Vista machine. After double clicking the program you want to remove the familiar ‘are you sure’ message will pop up.

Now for the cool part! Revo lets us choose how to uninstall the application using different mode levels. Here I am going to choose the Advanced mode. I don’t want a single trace of this toolbar left of my hard drive. **Keep in mind that if you are on a domain, software information will still be kept in the AppData folder under your profile.**

Progress while scanning including the steps Revo is taking.

This is what I like to see the most … Scanning for leftover information! This is the entire reason I really dig this application.

And here we are, it turns out this toolbar did indeed decide to leave some additional information in the registry. If there were left over files or folders associated with the program it would show those as well.

Revo Uninstaller is available in multiple languages!

Other options you can tweak to your liking. As you can see some features are not available in Vista but I am sure updates will include more features.

This application works on both Windows Vista and XP. Other options include deleting your Internet browsing history, and deleting certain start up programs and services. Oh! And I didn’t even cover Hunter Mode! I must say this is quite an impressive utility! Download Revo Uninstaller.

Whoever wrote this (and I know it's copy-paste) is a fool. I have seen Revo Uninstaller cause more problems than malware. And we aren't talking about tiny issues, We're talking about things like completely unbootable machines that hang at the splash screen, and after finally being coaxed to start, constant crashes from any application, in safe mode... all because somebody had the audacity to use the tool to uninstall their printer. Or any software that happens to require the addition of entries in CurrentControlSet. The official byline to this is essentially "Be careful using our program". Which is basically am admission that it will cause more problems than it solves, outside the very basic "just remove the icon" which essentially means using the program as nothing more than a FANCY shell around a basic registry edit.

By the way, the problem is, if I understood correctly, that the entries exist in Add/Remove, while their files don't. Not necessarily that they won't uninstall.

As I stated, though, If the entries exist in Add/Remove than there are registry keys being enumerated, regardless of how strongly one might say otherwise.i SAID that it was copied and pasted never created any isses on my computer or many others I am sorry you can help 100% then I am wishing you luck and I will not be helpping or trying to in this part

I am sorry then for using something that has worked for me, but disregard what I said and go with his thoughts Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 03, 2012, 07:37:22 PM

Solve : ebay login?

Answer»

hi all, when I sign in to my ebay account I get a box where I need to insert numbers to get to my account. Is there anyway to bypass this, cheers in advance. What do the numbers represent? Are they your ebay account name? Or, are you referring to a CAPTCHA? I am PRETTY certain that what you are referring to is the "password" required to access your personal account information or to actively bid on the site. I too have an e-bay account but very seldom have used it. Often there are offers on a site (such as CH forums) to "remember" your passwords or to "always" stay signed in. However i would NOT recommend that for QUITE a variety of reasons particularly on a site like e-bay. I believe it opens up access vulnerability issues that should be avoided. Out of curiosity why do you want to do this only for convenience?truenorth Quote from: snookerglen8 on January 04, 2012, 01:04:26 PM

What web browser are you using? All browsers do not behave the same way regarding the storing of passwords for secure websites.
Thxs everyone for your help. I'm using Firefox. This is what happens:- After signing in to my ebay account by typing in my User ID and password I then have to enter 6 numbers from an image into a box to continue to my account. Can entering the 6 numbers be bypassed. I'm the only user of my pc.No...it cannot be bypassed...it's called Captcha.I have an ebay account and do not get a captcha when I sign in. Have you had repeated failed sign-in attempts recently? I believe that if eBay sees some kind of suspicious behavior' on your account such as multiple failed login attempts, then they turn on CAPTCHA's for it. They won't turn it off until the login FAILURES cease. Excellent point Soybean...hadn't considered that.soybean, a couple of years ago when I was using internet explorer, a problem developed accessing my ebay account. Kept getting "cannot access the webpage", but since starting using Firefox I can. Never had CAPTCHA with IE before problem started. For 2 years i've had correct logins with FF but still get CAPTCHA.Then it's possible the login uses an ACTIVEX component...which FFox doesn't use///
Does it do the same now with IE ? ?I can sign in to my ebay account with Firefox, IE, and Opera and not get a captcha with any of them.

... meaning no repeated attempts due to typing errors. Is that right? Have you used the same password for 2 years?

Do you periodically clear browser COOKIES and cache? Have you changed the default Privacy settings in Firefox? soybean, same password for last 2 years. I use CCleaner every day, so that will delete cookies and cache. I've just checked my FFox privacy settings. I'ts set to "never remember history". Will it help if i change it to "remember history", cheers.Uncheck the eBay site from the CCleaner cookie list...this should solve it...thxs patio, your suggestion solved it. I removed ebay from delete cookies list in Ccleaner.

Solve : Feature in Windows XP to automatically rename files with a duplicate name??

Answer»

Is it possible to set preferences on Windows XP to automatically change duplicate FILE names so that older documents or files don't get overwritten?

I have to copy many files to the same folder and many have the same file name. I only want duplicate files renamed, maybe by adding to the file name so it is still recognizable. Like changing readme.doc to readme(001).doc.

Is it possible, instead of having to waiting for the “This file already exists” dialog and having to OK or disallow the OVERWRITE of a file with the same name, to have Windows GO ahead and complete the transfer but KEEP a renamed copy of the old file?
Thanks,
VernI don't know of any way in XP. Windows 7 handles this more intelligently. You'd need to hook into Explorer. Possibly there's a third party copying app that performs this function, but I don't personally know of one. You may want to look at a 3rd party copy utility. I think TeraCopy has the functionality to RENAME duplicates but I don't think it looks to see which file is older.

Solve : NTLDR is missing - Files Won't Copy to C DRIVE - any other solutions?

Answer»

Hi there,

My Story:

I deleted my D Drive which contained half my space in an attempt to expand my C Drive into the unalloacted disk space. This followed through fine but when the computer was set up originally the boot NTLDR files were placed on the D Drive. I Didnt know this and as I am used to having my files on the C Drive the computer now comes up with 'NTLDR is missing'.

I have obtained the boot CD and have gone into the recovery console to attempt to copy the NTLDR files over from the disk to the C Drive but it blue SCREENS on me with a BAD_POOL_HEADER fault. I attempted to fixboot etc and cant FIND a way to fix this problem. By my reckoning I think that the files I am attempting to copy over to the C Drive are FAT32 but the C Drive was formatted to an NTFS Type before the merge. Could this be why? and if so how would I Fix this?

Thank yo for any help you give.

EncoredOkay, I think this has to do with my ARC PATH. It cannot find the boot.ini file. How do I reconfigure it so that the boot file can be found. Originally it was my D: drive that had the boot files on it, but since the merge the files would be on the C DRIVE?

Or is this just wishful thinking and I need to find myself some NTFS NTLDR files from somewhere?Do you have an XP cd? If so, do a repair install:
Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on top of itself. After completion you'll need to go to WINDOWS Update and download & install all updates (EXCEPT for hardware & driver related updates, which should never be downloaded from Windows Update - only from the OEM websites). Here is a clear TUTORIAL on how to perform a repair install: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/

Solve : Error message (bsod)?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a Dell Optiplex GX400, running windows 2000 pro, intel pentium 4 processor, 1.50ghz, 256kb integrated, bios revision AO4. It was my office computer, purchased in 2001 and never had any major problems. My boss retired and let me have it. So, I transported it home. I only took the CPU and hooked it up to my moniter, keyboard and mouse at home. When I turned it on, it gave me plug & play configuration error all down the screen, then on another line....NIC failure, then another line...strike F1 to continue, F2 to run setup utility, so I pressed F1.........when i do that, it says starting windows, but then it gives me a bsod which reads,

***STOP: 0x000000A5 (0x00010003,0x81876410,0x00000002,0x818AFA84)The ACPI BIOS in this system is not FULLY compliant with the ACPI specification. PLEASE read the README.TXT for the possible workarounds. You can also contact your system's manufacturer for an updated BIOS, or visit http://www.hardware-update.com to see if a new BIOS is available.

The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor or visit http://www.hardware-update.com for an updated BIOS. If you are unable to obtain an updated BIOS or the latest BIOS supplied by your vendor is no ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI mode during text mode setup. To do this, simply press the F7 key when you are prompted to install storage drivers. The system will not notify you that the F7 key was pressed-It will silently disable ACPI and allow you to continue your installation.

So, the only thing I can do after that is turn it off because it just stays there, it doesn't restart or anything. When I turn it back on on press F1 to get past the plug and play config error screen and then I just press F7 a few times, but the bsod appears again.

I know this is a longshot, but does anyone have any suggestions?
Turn it off and open it up.
Make sure everything is connect and seated properly. The trip home might have made something come lose.

Make sure to take anti-static precautions before working inside the computer case. Touch a piece of grounded metal to discharge any static electricity.Hi,

Thanks for your help. Actually, I did open it up thinking that might have been the problem, however, I just don't know what I'm looking at. It did look like something was disconnected, but I have no way of knowing where it belongs........I tried to find illustrations in the MANUAL, but there is nothing that specifically tells you where conncections are to be seated. I don't know if you can TRY to describe to me where it might be reconncected. I would try it..........

Solve : Can I delete old OS?

Answer»

I have an IBM Thinkpad, Pentium 3, 260 megs RAM, 10 Gig HD Windows 2000 Professional SP4 upgrade.

The Computer was given to me, with the OS already installed on it, and I noticed that in the directory there is a file folder for Win 98, and one for Win 2000. The Win 98 OS doesn't seem to work when I try to boot into it, so I always use Win 2000. SPACE is at a premium on that computer as I have had to switch all my data files to it as I am expecting my main computer HD to fail at any TIME.

My question is, can I delete the Win 98 OS from my system WITHOUT mucking up the Win 2000 system. If I could it would gain back some space, and it would be easier than doing a complete reinstall of everything.

Thanks

Win 98 can only be deleted if you have the Win 98 cd. If you delete Win 98 and try to rerun the Win 2000 update you will be asked to insert the Win 98 cd to verify that the update is legal.

Look for things to delete such as hotfix uninstallers and run disk cleanup to compress OLD files.

Solve : My computer shut down and restarted itself, TWICE!?

Answer»

Once on Friday last week and again on Saturday. Both times a blue error page flashed on and off so fast I couldn't read it. Then it just restarted. I got the window that gives you the option to notify Microsoft and I did. Both times the answer was that there had been a stop command, caused by a failing driver. Although they did not say what driver!
My machine has been running fine. As far as I know everything was working. I recently downloaded some adware and spyware programs, so I uninstalled them, and have had no other issues yet.
How can I search for the alleged driver problem? Delete and reinstall all my drivers?
Jim

HP laptop--Win xp pro--McAfee anti V--(was using, AVG antispyware, Spybot S&D,Adaware 2007)Go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery...uncheck auto-start on errors.
Next time this HAPPENS the machine won't re-boot instead it will show the BSOD...copy all the info and submit it here...Thanks,
I'm not sure if I found the right thing or not. There is no "auto start" or "errors "place, but there is a" System Failure" section. I unchecked "AUTOMATICALLY Restart".
We will see.

I am planning this way.

(3)Then try to reinstall Me with the RECOVERY cds.
Should it WORK?
And would any expert describe in some what more detail all the steps required to accompish the above three steps ?
Thanks,

If the drive is formatted no need to install Win98 first...if the CD's are the Compaq OEM's it should work fine...
If the machine has a floppy drive then first DLoad the WinME boot disk from bootdisk.com....grab the one with CDROM support and you should be good to go.

Solve : Need syntax for action ...?

Answer»

I was saying to try it in the action box with the quotes. I don't think it will WORK but it won't hurt anything.

I understand you are LOOKING for a way to modify the way the program is opened. I don't know what switches would work with Spipe.exe. Have you tried to open a CMD window and type /? at the end of Spipe.exe and see if any help comes up?

I am going to look around and see if I can get a little more infor and better way to get this done.

Right now my fall back would be to put a batch file that does everything you want some where on the computer and put the path to it in your action box. Doing this does work, or at LEAST it did for me. It ALSO lets you edit the batch file remotely if you had to sometime down the road.

I will keep looking and let you know what I can dig up.

Thanks
One more question.

If we go the batch file/right-click association method, using a command line in the action box like:

Code: [Select]C:\SPIPE\RUN_SPIPE.BAT

Is there a way to use the filename(and location) that was right-clicked on as a variable in the batch file? Maybe something like:

Code: [Select]C:\SPIPE\RUN_SPIPE.BAT %1

This would help considerably.
The batch file as written requires operator input - TYPING in the filename and output location.
that is my question

How do you create your variable in your batch file, to be the name of the input file.

for example

file name is problem.inp

c:\[path]\spipe.exe < =filename.inp>=filename.out

also does would it automaticaly know the path to filename.

looks like we are close.

thanks for the help.anybody have any idea on how to set a variable to equal the file name?
