Solve : using floppy connection for dvd burners?

Answer»

hello to you all,
I was wondering if it was possible to use the FLOPPY drives connection to ad an extra BURNER.A lot of new computers don't have the floppy drives but the connection is there ( i'm assuming).I'm building a new COMPUTER and want know if this is possible.
thanks,
bmacgurkNo you can't.
Floppy connectors don't have the correct NUMBER of PINS and the floppy controller wouldn't know what to do with a DVD drive.
I suggest you buy an external DVD burner if you're out of internal expansion options.thanks I was just curious to the fact wish you could though

Solve : ERROR with add/remove programs - I can't access it!!?

Answer»

I'm USING Windows 2000 Pro operating system

I have a FujiFilm A303 digital camera and I wanted to INSTALL the USB driver for the camera. The driver was bundled with a whole bunch of STUPID software that I didn't want but there was no option for installing the driver minus the software so I was stuck with installing the software along with the driver. I assumed I could simply uninstall the unwanted software when I was done (I already have Adobe software for photos and don't need anything else). However, the unwanted software did not come with uninstallers. When I went to go into Add/Remove programs to remove the software I continually get an error message

"Mshta.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows". I get the same message when trying to get into the Programs folder on C: drive.

I already tried the suggestions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285195

and they did not work. How can this issue be resolved?

Standalone Drivers with no garbage are Here...

Always CHECK the manuf. website first.

You could try removing the garbage apps in safemode.I wish I had thought to check their website for the drivers first!

I tried this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292175

and it seemed to SOLVE the issue for the moment. I will go back in and delete those programs that caused the problems now that I can access the Add/Remove programs again.

Solve : Registry Permissions Problem Installing Outlook 2003?

Answer»

Hello,

I was trying to install Outlook 2003 on my HP desktop (XP SP2) but ran into a problem. Although I have had this INSTALLED on several occasions in the past (removing it to get some disk space), this time when I tried the installation process got to the point of "writing system registry values" and stopped. I got this message:

Error 1402 Setup cannot open registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Applications\WINWORD.EXE\TaskbarExceptionsIcons\Wordmail Verify that you have sufficient permissions.....

I tried it again in safe mode, but there it barely began setup when I got a message that the Administrator (which I was signed in as !) has SET things up so that the installation could not take place.

Now, I do recall about 1-2 years ago addressing some issue with the help of online computer experts, and that entailed doing something in the 'permissions' area of the registry. But I have long SINCE forgotten what that was and I'm no geek with these things (though I can GENERALLY follow directions well).

I looked at the permissions area of the registry key in question but can't make heads nor tails of what I see, and unfortunately there is no way that I can see to restore defaults for that key.

Is there some way to get that key back to its default status, or at least to safely provide permission for the installation (which, as I say, was successfully accomplished on more than one occasion in the past) to proceed ?

Although the installation stopped with the registry item shown above, is there any possibility that -- if I can get beyond this issue -- I will encounter another registry problem as the installation proceeds ?

Thanks for any suggestions (even if they're only to "forget about it").

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

I tried the 'fix,' but when I ATTEMPTED to change the permissions according to the instructions, regedit froze ("not responding"). I tried it in normal and safe modes. No luck.

I may be in over my head here. Looks like this may be a job for computerman -- uh,... one that can make a housecall, that is.

Solve : Windows XP Recovery Console.?

Answer»

Several procedures for error recovery require the use of the Recovery Console. Unfortunately some installs of XP will not allow access to the Recovery Console without a password, even if a password has never been set. A blank password is not accepted EITHER so simply pressing Enter is useless. (i.e. no password of any kind will be accepted).

The RegEdit below will allow access to the Recovery Console without using a password but, of course, the RegEdit must be applied when your system is running.

Before attempting the RegEdit please ENSURE the registry is fully backed up (I recommend using ERUNT).

Quote

This registry edit causes the Recovery Console not to ask for a password. This works for both XP Home and XP Pro.

Start | RUN | Regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot

The MS KB is here, I believe the RegEdit is the easiest way.

Nice find...

A COMMON problem with HP and with a system which is not updated. You should update to SP.2, install all hotfixes since then and ensure your DIRECTX is updated.

But then, didn't you post this on Mar 19 2006?Quote

Solve : Tablet PC or Laptop?

Answer»

hello again, I'm just curious about which one is BETTER, Tablet PC or Laptop.
For people who don't know what a tablet PC looks like heres a picture, but you can really find out what its capability is just by looking at the picture

Tablet PC

Laptop

thanks alotTo say that one is better than the other is, I suppose, a matter of preference.

I think there are users who would never want to or never consider using a stylus or "writing" on their computers...a laptop might be best for them.

Others would like the additional FUNCTIONS a tablet offers...

Product reviews might GIVE you the best IDEA...The tablet is pretty cool. My friend showed me his Tablet and when you flip the screen back and FOLD it, you can use it as a sketch pad and if you write words with the stylus, it converts them to ASCII characters.

When I delete this folder windows shows this Error message:

I shared this folder on the network but when I disabled sharing it and tried to delete it again, this error COMES again.

I used UNLOCKER to delete this folder but it gives this error message:

I restarted my computer but it wasn't deleted and I can't deleted now too.

When I use Windows Command Prompt to delete it says: Access is denied

I can't delete it using safe mode.

It is not in windows drive ( drive C: )

I didn't Encrypt it.

I can open that folder and I can also copy my files from that folder to other places but I can't move that folder and files.

Please HELP me! I MUST delete that folder because it is taken a big space of my d: drive.

thanks in advance.
FarahmandYou must have admin privileges.

Try taking ownership of the folder - see here..

Good luckAnd try getting rid of the contents one file at a time....there may be only one file with restrictions on it that is preventing deletion of the entire folder...

Its probably some form of MALWARE. That happens to me know and again not enough to be a pain but you get the idea. I would clean out the cookies too. I would use crapcleaner or Ccleaner. alright i'll get back with you when i have the log from Spybot, and you said it was malware so i'll run Ad-Aware once i get home and i'll get you the log from that too. What other protection apps do you have ? ?
Spybot and Adaware are GOOD for what they do but not much use against virii or trojans...well i got wvyern works FIREWALL but i need to get a new one but here are the logs from Ad-Aware one in smart scan mode and the other in full scan mode.

Solve : Computer Tries to Turn on by Itself?

Answer»

I recently INSTALLED an internal media READER and had to reformat my hard drive (don't ask...). When I set EVERYTHING back up, everything works fine, however, when the computer is off, it tries to boot back up by itself? You hear the drives (CD and hard drive) get power, lights go on, on the tower, and 3 seconds LATER, it shuts off. It sporadically does this. Any ideas?CHECK in BIOS, if you have Wake on LAN enabled.Disabled.....any other ideas?Look at the power mamagment area of the BIOS and set it to manual.

You could also ask around to see if anyone can perform a exorcism! Ok just kidding about the last part....

Some malwares can cause it, as well. How is your computer security?

Solve : Internet properties comes up when\ITS BEEN FIXED!?

when i try to surf the web through the start menu or through its shortcut, the menu where you can change which site you start with; the page where you delete cookes and temp. internet files comes up. my sister bought an mp4 and it came with a disk, it contained crack files and she didnt read in the instruction manual how to deal with a crack, when she comes home i will let them know, WANT me to ask them first if they can fix it on the spot!? hm , it was from ebay, it was brand NEW but, that may not matter... the manual doesnt have a site to go to, i just CHECKED the front and , back parts. i found a "please visit our website" im checking the disk. the disk has a site in chinese still after downloading the decoder for it from the factory disk. i DONT know if they deal with the crack differently, you might have to copy the crack and use the copy of the crack to start that program. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN RESOLVED! it asked me something like "do you want internet explorer, your default browser or sumthing" AWEsome! it may be resolved by repairing your COMPUTER or whatever, repairing the partition and resinstalling service pack 2 thats the last thing i got done, i dont remember it the first time i tried to repair it recently with this issuePlease re-state the problem...i've re-read this 3 times and i still don't understand.

Solve : XP Home is VERY slow?

Answer»

My XP home works very slow since a week back. I changed my internet provider to the Swedish comhem.se one week ago a with a 8mbit/s account broadband.
Since then my internet connection takes about 3-4 minutes to load and the same goes for Outlook Express.
My "personal settings" at the start of my computer take about the same time to load.
The computer works with a VERY HIGH rattling sound when loading something up.
Almost every click on a link takes about 3-4 minutes to load. Several warning boxes about "safe pages" and sites are shown without any danger at all at hand.
The "printing order" to my HP Laser Jet1018 takes at least 3-4 minutes to execute.

There are many other mysterious things happening to my computer and I don't know what to do.
My computer is a HP Pavilion T 270 about 4 years old and I'm using about 15 % of the hard disk.
I've succeeded to mend Outlook Express where all account passwords disappeared and no links at all worked in Explorer.
I have done the following trying to repair but..........

1) Defragmenting
2) Registry clean up
3) Start - RUN - msconfig
4) Windows automatic update

I've been advised to do a total SYSTEM RECOVERY with a CD I've got when buying the computer but I'm afraid ALL MY WORK will disappear if doing so or am I wrong?
If this should turn out to be the only way to go then I have to save everything on CD:s or.....?
YOU ARE MY LAST HOPE!!! PLEASE.What, exactly, was involved in making the change to comhem.se one? Did you install software you got from them? Have installed or uninstalled any other software since the change in ISP? Have you made any hardware changes to your computer in this same time frame?

What firewall do you use? Do you have an anti-virus program monitoring your system? Do you use any spyware removal tools? You may have a serious malware problem.

Have you cleared browser cache recently? Do you use any file cleanup tools such as CCleaner? How often do you defragment your hard drive?

Quote

... then I have to save everything on CD:s or.....?
Well, how important is your data to you? If you don't want to risk losing it, better back it up to an external media.Hey Soybean, I'll try to ANSWER your questions:
1) My landlord provided all his tenants with comhem.se as standard in his apartment houses.
2) I've done one istallment of Comhem's security package
3) No hard ware changes
4) I'm using Windows own firewall
5) My ant-virus program is Windows own
6) Just read this: a) Free Internet Window washer b) Free registry Cleaner, c) Registry helper, d) Windows Install Clean Up e) Pareto Logic's Regcure, f) Windows Defender, g) Windows Update and finally Microsoft's Update

7 I have to admit that I don't know what "browser cache" is. Some kind of memory? Where do I find it?
I'm defragmenting once or twice a year

AS FAR AS I UNDERSTAND I SHOULD REMOVE MANY OF THESE SECURITY PROGRAMS AND LEAVE MICROSOFT'S OWN PROGRAMS OR......?
However I'll await your answer before doing anything.
Please, advice me

Regards
njmvimnomQuote
6) Just read this: a) Free Internet Window washer b) Free registry Cleaner, c) Registry helper, d) Windows Install Clean Up e) Pareto Logic's Regcure, f) Windows Defender, g) Windows Update and finally Microsoft's Update
Is the list above the components of Comhem's security package?

Quote
2) I've done one istallment of Comhem's security package
Again, what does that consist of? I suspect that package is the culprit here. Assuming it contains such tools as spam blocking, anti-virus, firewall, spyware protection/removal, etc., all that can be obtained from other programs, some of which you may already have installed.

Quote
4) I'm using Windows own firewall
If Comhem's security package contains a firewall, you probably have two firewalls enabled. That's not good. Only run one.

Quote
5) My ant-virus program is Windows own
Umm, Windows doesn't have it's own. So, please clarify what you have.

Quote
7 I have to admit that I don't know what "browser cache" is. Some kind of memory? Where do I find it?
Yup, it's a kind of memory. If you're using Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, and click the Delete button under Browsing HISTORY. I suggest including Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History, for this troubleshooting exercise.

Quote
I'm defragmenting once or twice a year
Although I doubt that may not be a significant factor in this situation, you should still defragment much more often. The ideal frequency varies for each computer use, but I suggest you do it at least one time per month. The more often you do it, the less time it takes to defragment.

So, what should you do? Here's my thoughts:

1. Uninstall the Comhem's security package
2. Clear browser cache
3. Download CCleaner and run it's Windows SCAN and it's Registry scan. Remove all the items it finds. When running the Registry scan, backup the Registry when prompted. Repeat the Registry scan, since it may find more items upon a repeat scan.
4. Answer my questions so we have more info to go on. We need to know where you stand for firewall, anti-virus, and spyware protection, without having Comhem's security package installed.

For CCleaner, go to http://www.ccleaner.com/download , select Other builds, then select the Slim version.Hey again Soybean, I'm very grateful for your interrest. To answer your questions:
6) This list is NOT the content of Comhem's security package it's just separated programs downloaded by myself in my trials to repair my computer.

2) Comhem's Security Package's content is: Virus protection, Protection against illegal entrance and a firewall which stops viruses and trojans

4) You're right there are two firewalls - Comhem's and Windows

5) I suppose I meant the antvirus program in Windows defender or some other Window's program - I don't remember which one.

Finally. I'll do all what you've told me

Have a nice Easter
njmvimnomQuote
Have a nice Easter
You, too.

Let us know how things go with the computer.Hello again Soybean, I've removed all the "security programs" and that was what was needed. Everything is running smoothly.
BUT I have no Virus protection so I will try to reinstall ONLY comhem's virus protection to see what that will do. If it doesn't work I'll remove it once again.
I've downloaded your CCleaner and run it until there were nothing "criminal" left.
Once again, thank you! Glad to hear your computer is running smoothly again.

Regarding anti-virus protection, I suggest you skip the product from comhem and get AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (version 7.5). I and many other forum members are using it.:)Thanks a lot, Soybean for all your help. Before I read your message I had downloaded Spyware Doctor, what do you THINK of that program?I haven't used it but I believe it's a good program. I just this:
Spyware Doctor review. I think you should give it a try. But, you still need anti-virus protection, too. Spyware Doctor protects against "spyware and adware parasites, trojans, keyloggers, backdoors, trackware and other dangerous, emerging threats", but is not an anti-virus program.

It doesn't say no signal but also the light on the keyboard wont turn on, just the fans...Testing the monitor on a machine that's also not working isn't going to TELL us much...

On your machine is this onboard video or an addon video card ? ?
When you stated moving the cable get's it going this would be my first suspect...Hi Patio i have been reading on the forums and I admire u alot, I don't know much of this but u are a genius. Thanks alot for being here and to answer Its an onboard videowhen I say that I move the keyboards cable and it lights this is just for half a second CHECK with the people you know to see if anyone has a spare monitor cable around and replace the one you have...Make sure everything is unplugged power wise when you switch them.
If this doesn't help anything you may have to have a friend temporarily install a video card in that machine to see if that works...
If it does then you will need to purchase a video card.
This would MEAN that your onboard video chip has failed.I'm sorry not the monitors cableit's the keyboards cable that I moveok I will try that but then I would need help on installing that video card Thanks Alot , till tommorrow and thank youQuote from: roserod2 on March 22, 2008, 01:11:09 AM

I'm sorry not the monitors cableit's the keyboards cable that I move

If this is the case then you need to unplug the machine and double-check ALL your connections on the back of the machine. Finally I could reply, anyway I double checked all the cables on my computer but it still didn't work, could it be the operatingsystem that it doesn't send nothing (no information) to the monitor or the mother board, I had the problem before but then the machine would suddenly work. Or is it the hard drive. I would have buy the video card.

Solve : My Computer Screen Goes Small When Playing a Game?

Answer»

I really need help on this one.

For some REASON, when I play a game installed on my computer, my screen goes to a very small size, and is shrunken to about 760x600 (with the black screen surrounding it).

I don't know why this is HAPPENING. Here is what I think may help to help me:

In 'Settings', for when I right click on the desktop, it has two different screens. Like this:

What game or games are you trying to play when this happens? The two screens you have there mean your computer can support Dual Screen.
Screen sizes normally change due to settings in the game

As Aegis said, can you please tell us the name of the game(s).Many games let you select a screen resolution. I am sure if you go to control panel of the game you are playing you can set a new resolution, or select full screen. It was not because of the game, though.

The things did before this problem started occuring is:

Download WindowsBlinds
Uninstall a couple games

That was it.Quote

Download WindowsBlinds

Here is the root of the problem...Can you please explain to me why?

I already UNINSTALLED it, though. It's a resource hog that buries itself deep inside the system and in my experience causes nothing but HAVOC...
Your mileage may DIFFER.

When I push the on button to turn it on, the INDICATOR LIGHTS come on but it won't turn on. Once I remove my finger from the on button the indicator lights go off.
This happens when I try to use it with the battery or wall cord.
Any suggestions? Thanks

Solve : XP Keeps Rebooting?

Answer»

Hey All,
About 2 weeks ago my wifes pc hp pavilliona430n was shut off accidentally when the power strip was shut off. After that the computer would not start at all. It was not getting power. I changed out the psu but since I changed it, the cpu fan keeps powering high and low, running high especially when accessing EVEN the smallest file and at start up. It had done this in the past but not nearly as much as now. I put a monitor on it and when the fan revs high it hits the critical mark, so it says. The processor is an AMD ATHLON 3200+. I blew out all the dust around the heatsink and fan. I read that I should clean, paste and reseat the heatsink. I took off the cpu fan to clean the backside and reinstalled it. That's where the big problem begins. I restarted it and the first message was corrupt or missing hal.dll file. I'm familiar with this problem, having recently dealt with it on another system. The next error was page_fault error. Anyway, I went to do a repair with my xp disk, the whole time it's booting up the setup files, the cpu fan is running at high speed. Once the set up files are done, the computer reboots itself. I've tried safe mode, no deal, last config, nope. So now I can't even boot from the xp cd. I would really appreciate any help. All the system does now is re-boots. It may take more than one time to get the CPU and heatsink installed with the right amount of THERMAL paste. Have you tried doing it more than once ?That was my next move. I bought the thermal paste and I was going to do it, but once I took the fan off and saw there was dirt caked on the underside of it and cleaned it. I was hoping that just might be the problem Stranger things have happened. I even tried to undo the clips on the heatsink, but could not figure how to unlock them. Do you think that MOVING the heatsink a BIT while trying to unclip it could have caused my problems with the re-booting? My other problem is that I'm not sure if the pc is re-booting because the cpu is getting hot or is it related to the errors i got. I'm able to f8 and CHOOSE safe mode, etc. but once the files show on the screen, it just reboots. over and over.

Thanks for the replyYou need the CPU,heatsink, and fan to be removed, cleaned properly,
and apply the correct amount of thermal paste.

1. Error Checking- This takes about 30 minutes.
Start - my computer - right click local disk (C) - properties - Tools Tab -
Error checking section - Check now - check mark both boxes - Start -
This requires a RESTART to begin.

2. Start - Run - type - sfc /scannow - OK
Don't forget the space between c and /
You will need the Recovery CD that came with your PC if any thing is found wrong.
Don't insert unless asked for.

You can check to see if you have a restore point before your trouble started.
Start - all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.

For your Outlook Express Email I will give what I picked up a while back
For were your Outlook emails are located on your PC.
The easiest way to locate Outlook Express' email store is to ask Outlook Express. Open it up, and then in Tools, OPTIONS, on the Maintenance tab there's a button labeled Store Folder. Click that and it will tell you the folder containing your email folder.
Highlight the address and right click it and left click copy.
Start - Run - Paste in the address - click OK
At the left top - Edit - Select all - right click your highlighted files - send to your CD & DVD and put on a CD
If their not their. than I don't know.
Copy the entire contents of that directory to a floppy, CD-ROMHow dfoes this laptop connect to the web ? ?
Wired or wireless ? ?
More info on the machine and what happened prior to this and someone will be along shortly...My laptop is wired- broadband
It all started when one day my father was playing around with it i returned to the computer and the address bar on internet explorer had disapeared, had a play around with thr tools on the top bar but to no avail. i turned the computer off and left it, i few weeks later i tried again but this time around a blue screen with a error MESSAGE came up, unfortunately i cant recall the message. Thinking i was a computer whiz i went into the reboot system and cleared everything and i mean everything i was so gutted, however i was able to get in and use a few applications, but i am unable to access the web, and emails and stuff.
What kind of info do you need about the machine?I did the error check and that went through however, this message has now come up widows couldnot start because the folowing file is missing or corupt: \system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re install a copy of the above file.

Is that the operating systems *censored*, or the driver recovery disc?

Solve : Question Regarding Computer Problem?

Answer»

I'm not sure what forum this falls under, so I'll try here.

My computer worked fine with no problems, I had it on this morning and was cleaning and my son decided to change the light COLOR on the computer itself. So he went into f2 or f12 and changed the light, but then when he exited, i got the follow error message, loading pbr for descriptor 2...done., pbr bad.

I have a warranty with dell and called them up and he TRIED a few things, but said that I would have to recover the entire computer and that might not work and they NEED to send somebody out with new parts.

First off, the computer had no issues til we went to change the light, so I figured maybe my son clicked some other setting. I tried setting everything back to factory default, but now I don't get any messages and the dell screen line loads, the screen goes black, then the dell line starts all over again, this process REPEATS over and over.

My problem is I have info on the computer files/pics etc, that I don't want to lose and I was looking at like geek squad and an external hard drive and it's look like I will end up spending 400 to 700, just to recover my files so I can then have dell come fix my computer.

I also tried using the windows disk but it won't let me repair and when i tried to install windows after the intialization, it will show my free space and tells me to choose that but then i get some message it failed for whatever reason.

Any suggestions on how I can either fix this on my own, or how can i get my info on my comp onto ANOTHER source without having to spend so much money?I am sorry but I don't understand. What do you mean you changed the light? Do you mean some color on the screen?

Solve : windows just keeps rebooting?

Answer»

i downloaded and ran superantispyware on my desktop. after it ran and restarted. it never restarted it just kepts rebooting. it wont go in safemode or safemode with networking. the only thing i can get to come up is a blue screen that says:

a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to you computer.

a driver has overrun a stack-based buffer. this overrun could potentially allow a malicious user to gain control of this machine.

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow these steps:

check to make sure any new hardware or SOFTWARE is properly installed. if this is a new installation, ask you hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

if problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. disable bios or remove any newly installed hardware or software. disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

i don't have a xp disk to try to fix anything i was just trying to get some help with this issue. Stop 0x0000007F or UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

The Stop 0x7F message indicates that one of three types of problems occurred in kernel-mode:

• A condition that the kernel is not allowed to have or intercept (also known as a bound trap).

• Software problems.

• Hardware failures.

Possible Resolutions:

• Stop 0x7F messages are typically DUE to defective, malfunctioning, or failed memory hardware. If you added new hardware recently, remove and replace it to determine if it is causing or contributing to the problem. Run diagnostics software supplied by the system manufacturer to determine if the component has failed. (Memtest86 from Memtest86.com.)

• Running the CPU BEYOND the rated specification, known as "overclocking," can cause Stop 0x7F or other error messages due to heat buildup. When diagnosing problems on overclocked systems, first restore all clock and bus speed settings to the manufacturer recommended values to determine if this resolves the issues.

• The problem might also be due to cracks, scratched traces, or defective components on the motherboard. If all else fails, take the system motherboard to a repair facility for diagnostic testing.

• Stop 0x7F messages can occur after installing incompatible applications, drivers, or system services. Contact the software manufacturer about possible Windows XP specific updates. Using updated software is especially important for backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, and CD mastering tools.

Why did you run SuperAntiSpyware, did you suspect an instrusion or infection

Do you have any software CAPABLE of accessing your hard-drive, such as UBCD or Knoppix

Without an XP cd it's gonna be a hard slog.

First. Please read this and come back to us with as many DETAILS as you can. Need to know your hardware setup, floppy drive, cd/dvd

Also do you have access to a pc on which you can download from the internet and create floppy disks and/or burn cd's/dvd's? The pc MUST have updated anti-virus and firewall installed before accessing the internet.
yes i do have access to another pc. i was wondering if i would be able to use it. it also has windows xp. how would i be able to use the other computer to help my situation.

Solve : floppy image creator?

Answer»

You tried creating a FLOPPY by extracting the driver files from the INTEL Matrix Storage Manager package? (SP32492)
Quote

7.2 Use one of the following command examples to extract the
driver files from the different package types:

c:\iata_cd.exe -a -a -p c:\<path>
c:\iata_enu.exe -a -a -p c:\<path>
c:\setup.exe -a -p c:\<path>

When run, the installation process begins; simply click
through the dialogs as PROMPTED. This will not install
the driver, it will only extract the driver files to
<path>. After the extraction is completed, the driver
files can be found in <path>\Driver.
I guess I hadn't done it that way, I had assumed there was no difference -I hope I was wrong! Thanks... I'll LET you know how it goes. Well, sadly, same result. The XP install program asks me for the "intel storage manager driver" as above and I put in the disk and nothing. Now I'm stuck...I'm out of ideas... Maybe you should GET in touch with HP and hear if they're familiar with this issue.Thank you all for your help... HP won't help me unless I pay them $59.99. I have another identical laptop here, I might create recovery discs with that, then recover the laptop I've been working on, at least to go back to XP Media Center...

Solve : new XP logon password?

Any suggestions?Make sure all CD's, floppy DISKETTES, USB drives, ETC. are out of the computer. It's possible it may be trying to boot from one of them.

If that doesn't help, have you recently added any new hardware or moved the computer?

If not, are you able to ENTER the CMOS setup (pressing F1/F2/Del) as computer boots up?

Solve : Broadband Speed?

Answer»

Hi again guys, as you can see I am working my way through various problems I am encountering and, as I am not very knowledgeable, I need some more help.

I currently have a 1 Mb BROADBAND connection (midway in the house) the modem is connected directly to a DLink WIRELESS router which is hard wired to my satellite box to enable 'card sharing'. This is working FINE and is very stable. My PC is connected via a wireless network and dongle working at the maximum speed of the router, 54Mbps.

Having just conducted a speed check on the broadband connection I get a READING of: Download speed of around 1Mb but only get an upload speed of 165Kbps. I don't THINK that this is right any ideas?

Thanks again in advance for all your kindness.Upload speeds are throttled down by most ISP's ...is the DLoad speed acceptable ? ?
Check with your ISP as to what upload speeds you are entitled to.As patio said....upload speed may be up to 10 times slower, then download speed.
On my cable, I can download at 15Mbps on average, but upload at only 1.5Mbps

Don't worry too much about tracking cookies. They're NEXT to harmless.

Solve : over frequency?

Answer»

hey guys,

what should i do with the error message Over Frequency?

when the windows xp logo SCREEN comes up the monitor turns to black then it shows the message over frequency, ive tried using safe mode ive and i made it, but when i try to use normal mode the error message comes up..

my computer is using the asus motherboard..

thanks in advance What is the refresh rate set to?i dont know yet..what would be the cause of that over frequency and what should i do..my os is xp sp3.When did the problem start?
Can you start in safe mode?
What made you install SP3? You do know it is still a beta and not stable yet right?Your monitor is telling you that the refresh rate of your display card signal is too high. You need to go into safe mode and alter the display settings.

my cousin TOLD me that he only used the computer to play an audio cd then when he turned off the computer and used it again later the computer already show this error.i can start in safe mode. i will try first to set the refresh rate, but where can i FIND it so that i can change it?Right click on desktop empty space, click Properties, then Settings tab, Advanced button, Monitor tab, and post back what refresh rate is reported.what should be the normal refresh rate of a monitor?ill reply the refresh rate later coz the computer is right here with me..

other than th refresh rate what should be the other cause of it?What is it set to, now? Try 60MHz.it says use hardware default setting..theres no other options like 60mhz,70mhz and so on..is there any other option to change the refresh rate?im using safe mode right now.Why in Safe Mode? You need to be in Normal Mode.i can only start in safe mode but in normal mode the errror message displays and it says over frequency..i thought that i could alter it in safe mode?Your video card may be shot. Try to borrow video card from a friend.your right the video card may have caused it, i have tried to use the enable vga mode and i have succesfuly started the pc in normal mode using only 8 bit but if i try using the 16 bit and 32 bit it CAUSES to restart and show the over frequency error. That's it.

Solve : Losing Ram?

I was using Movie Maker and I had a large movie with over 600 pictures but file size was only over 7 mb. Every time I try to edit something in the movie my computer goes to 100% usage. All 2 gb's are TIED up. Whenever I try to save the movie to my computer, it goes to 100% usage and just sits there although the program doesn't freeze. I switched everything to my new laptop and there doesn't appear to be any problem. Even opening MS Word makes the RAM spike to 100 %. Does anyone have any idea what's happening here. What is named in Task Manager as the main RAM taker? Here is the Task Manager

Are you looking at the top row or the second row?
When using Windows Movie Maker, your CPU usage will usually go to 100%, not the PF usage or RAM usage.Broni, Moviemaker is the largest user at 90mb. The pf usage is 431 mbVideo processing is the most resource hungry thing PC's are asked to do...
I'm assuming this is XP since you didn't say.
Even though the individual pics may not be that large you're still DEALING with a 7M file which Windows needs full access to...
What happens if you just go get a coffee and let it do it's thing ? ?All my computer info is in my signature. I was able to save it to a wmv file on my laptop and then burned it on this computer using DVD Flick which also put my CPU usage up to 100% so I tried stopping some of the processes which were running. 1 1/2 hrs. later I discovered that I had lost the audio on the burn so I had to do it over again which took over two hrs but I able to it. Solve : Readonly?

Answer»

Occasionally Windows will apply the Read-only attribute to several folders without my permission, at times the entire drive structure will seem to be read-only. Then it often re-applies it whenever I attempt to change it back. Does ANYONE KNOW why this might be?
Windows will apply what read only?

More Info please...I accidentally hit enter while typing. Are you talking about a USB drive here?
No, I am talking about my hard drives.I meant an external USB hard drive
What version of Windows ?
Is indexing service enabled ?
Have you installed a third-party FILE management program on this machine ?I am using Windows XP.
Yes indexing service is enabled.
And no I have not installed a third-party file management program.Turn off indexing in Start/Run/services.msc and see how it goes.
Windows should not do this on it's own....Hard to tell without knowing what new APPS you have installed...

Solve : computer will not accept windows xp setup pack 2?

Answer»

I have GONE through a gruelling process of trying to install the second pack of XP and then the computer SAYS no and deletes the files.
I was reminded of this needed to be put in to update my computer.
what now?Is this a LEGIT copy of Windows XP, how are you doing the update (CD/Internet), and what is the exact error you're getting when trying to update to SP2?

Solve : need help with word.?

Answer»

OK. At work we have these INPUT files, LETS say, problem.inp. All this is is a text only FILE with the extension *.inp. It opens fine in Notepad and wordpad, when i open it in windows i get this error message( see attached). after you CLICK ok it APPEARS fine on the screen.

I don't know how to get this to open without giving me the error, it used to open fine in windows.

Thanks
