Solve : Slow Shut down?

Answer»

When i go to shut my pc down, it is taking about 3mins+ just to BRING the Standby, Turnoff and Restart up. Then when i click Turnoff it is taking about 4/5mins to actually switch itself off.

Any ideas plz 1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not ENABLED:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value INDICATED does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and CHANGE the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000Cheers it worked a TREAT

Solve : Hard drive doesn't show C drive, but shows the other partition?

Answer»

My computer failed to boot a few weeks ago. I took out the C drive and put it in an external drive case on my other computer in order to retrieve outlook emails, bookmarks, etc. The drive is 250 gigs. It only shows an 'N' drive, 130 gigs worth of data, which must have been a partition. The C drive isn't there. Is it corrupted? Will be I be able to retrieve anything from the C drive? If the drive is corrupted, why does one partition show up and not the other?

I had a similar situation. I was able to get data off the drive using a UBUNTU live cd. Burn the iso to cd, put the drive back in the computer and boot to the cd. If you can SEE the drive in Places then you should be able to get your data off.

Please note the "if" and "should".

Good luck.Putting a LARGE drive into a USB enclosure does not ALWAYS work the way you think it should. USE a better USB adapter. One that is compatible with your mother board.

I used partition recovery software. It found the missing partition and after searching for almost 3 hours, it seems to have found mostly everything, and I'm now burning files to dvd. Whew!

By the way, where would outlook store all my emails and address book? It's a dbx file, right? I need to find it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670At the risk of creating a "testimonial", may I ask which partition recovery software you used? Is it a "free", "free for personal use only", or "commerical" product?

After BACKING up your data, will you attempt to recover the partition by rewriting its Partition Boot Record (PBR) or whatever name you wish to call it (Volume Boot Record)?

Solve : Oh no... not again... Argh...?

Answer»

Well now my computer really needs attention, it's an HP Presario with Windows XP, recently 3rd service pack, the bottom taskbar has just GONE missing, so no START button and no internet, I'm on a public computer and will be for only a few hours, I live out of town so you'll have to excuse me if I don't respond for awhile. so far, I've tried Ctrl/Esc as an alternative to the missing Start button but it's not working, neither is the windows flag button between Ctrl and Alt. I've somehow managed to SAVE some of my files/photos onto simple CD-R DISKS using Sonic, but they don't hold much, I picked up a Flashdrive thing and I'm hoping it will function with the little control I have, I know some of the bugs have kept me from using Hijack and getting proper help, I'm guessing it's time to save everything I can before jumping ship and reinstalling the OP. this is my first comp I would appreciate any and all help available. especially with not missing things I should be saving before I reinstall. besides file and folders, photos, is there anything else I should remember ? can I save the sites I have in Favorites ? how about all the work I've done on my Google Earth ?

Thanks in advance.

Kelly.

P.S. I'll check BACK in in a few hours before I leave.
Do This First then after you've saved your data we'll get you fixed up...but i suspect your infected.I'm afraid I don't own a second computer Bummer....That might slow things down. Are you allowed downloading things at the computer service? Thanks you guys for your help, my computer is back up a running now, I tried all sorts of suggestions but I guess my computer was just too messed up, I've had to reinstall the operating system and start from scratch, since my computer should be fairly bug free I've decided to buy a Seagate Replica to back things up, hopefully not so much work next time. thanks again.

Solve : Cannot Uninstall office 2007?

Answer»

I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218 and tried to force uninstall office 2007 because when I tried using ADD and Remove Programs it failed and didn't completely uninstall the programs. Now when I go to the UNINSTALLER folder to try and remove all the programs. I have removed all but 1 element of office. Microsft Enterpise 2007. I removed all the other elements (word, excel, pp) When I right click the .MSI file and click Uninstall It gives me a ERROR code Saying "This action only valid for products that are currently installed" I complete all the other STEPS on the Microsft Support Page. But I still cant remove that last program. And it is preventing me from Upgrading to 2010 Beta or reinstalling 2007.

Solve : I dont know what the problem is...?

Answer»

Hi,
I've recently reformatted my laptop when it was suddenly acting sluggish, and I was wanting to clean it up anyrate.

When I had finished re-installing all the drivers from Reinstall CD, it all seemed fine until I tried running an online game, and it would run totally fine for a few minutes, but then was slower than a maimed snail.
I tried re-reformatting a number of times with no luck.

My specs are Dell Inspiron 6400
2.0 Duo Core Processor
2 Gbs of RAM
7300 Go Geforce graphics card
I figured it ISNT anything with my Internet, as when I try and PLAY an .avi file on VLC, still laggy.
I installed the most recent driver I could find for my graphics, tried getting newer version of chipset from Intel...not sure what ELSE to do.
And what confuses me the most is that I have reformatted this laptop at least 2 times before and turned out totally fine.
Any help or info is greatly appreciated.I had a similar problem trying to run a game after reformatting that ran just fine before. I FOUND my problem to be that I failed to download my DirectX updates http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/resultsForProduct.aspx?displaylang=en&productID=9C954C37-1ED1-4846-8A7D-85FC422D1388haha, yes that was the problem.
I had thought of that before, but I for some reason decided it wasn't..
Thanks for the help You're welcome, glad I could help

Solve : Push Apps to XP?

Answer»

Problem.
Old HP computer with HP'sOEM XP SP2.It hHas three applications I need.
New(er) Dell computer, Dell OEM XP SP2. It has no Applications yet.

I have three Applications CDs.
But I don't want to go through the hassle of installing them again.
There were already installed on the HP

Both PCs are on a LAN and have not problem with with the LAN.
Both PCs have CD drives, if that would help. And flopppy.
I can easily take the HDD ou of one and put into the other.
I have software to make a "CLONE" of a HDD.

Is there a way to PUSH the applications for the old PC to the New PC?

We do not mean a simple file transfer. Nor a settings transfer. We mean PUSH the whole Application and whatever it takes so that it runs on the new PC just LIKE it did on the Old PC.

This is for XP. not Windows 7.

I think maybe I have a dirty solution, but I do not like it. I am hoping somebody here has some idea that is clean, neat and reliable.
Your question is not easy to understand, but if you are asking if apps installed on one computer can be transferred to another than No. They need to be reinstalled.Quote from: Allan on December 11, 2009, 04:14:39 PM

Your question is not easy to understand, but if you are asking if apps installed on one computer can be transferred to another than No. They need to be reinstalled.
Ye, you do understand!
That is what I thought!
But users keep trying to do it ...
and there are sites that say you can do it.

One company says they have a package that I can use one-time only and it COSTS me $20 for the one-time shot. Is that a scam?

I am working on a wimpy effort to do it...
but I know it will likely fail.
Right now it is a wet, cold rainy afternoon...
I've never heard of any app that can successfully transfer installed apps from one hd or system to another. Please post the link to this miracle "package" and let's take a look.I will find that later, I am on the other machine now.
But here are two links that might be real.
http://www.laplink.com/pcmover
http://srge2.anovasoft.com/us/
As mentioned earlier, we don' mean a simple data transfer. That does not install the application on the target PC. We want a program that not only copies, but updates the registry and includes the DLL files.I've used Laplink (many years ago) and it's certainly a reputable, if expensive, PRODUCT. But the claimed ability to transfer installed programs is not something I've seen before. Still, they say they can do it..... I'd give them a call or send them an email and tell them exactly what you want to do and see what they say. Not sure there's any downside since you're moving to a new installation. It's not the Laplink program we remember. It's now the name of the company and PCmover is the name of the product. It appears to do exactly what you want. And predictibally...it works miserably.

And predictibally...it works miserably.
So if you feel the need to spend some cabbage for something that doesn't work well send it my way...

Are you saying you don't work well, Patio?

Anyway, this can actually be done with some programs. Just copying the program's folder over to the other computer is sometimes enough, then create new shortcuts manually. Sometimes, it will additionally require exporting registry entries for that program from the first computer to the second as well, as there may be entries that tell the program what to do and what its settings are, and these are created when you actually install the program. I'm sure you're well aware of the dangers of tinkering with the registry, Geek, so you do that at your own risk. I have successfully moved programs and games this way before. It doesn't work with everything, as sometimes there are other required files that are stuck in weird places, but sometimes it does.

Then again, if they came with the HP, they might not be licensed for use on any other system and may not work at all if you move them. But another thing about HPS, a lot of them come with a folder on the C: drive called SWSetup. This contains the installers for any bundled software that came with the laptop.I didn't know that about the HP.
Thank you, quaxo for your post.Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 12, 2009, 08:54:21 AM
I didn't know that about the HP.

Solve : To reset my mouse click settings??

Answer»

Hello and thank you for looking at my thread.

I use my mouse with my left hand and used to have it set to right click for copy and PASTE functions.
A couple of days ago I "found" an area where I could change the mouse settings and changed the right click to paste on click function.

Since, I have found that this is not what I want.

I had set my mouse to right click paste function, just to try it out and find it no value for me.
Unfortunately I cant find the section where I set it, and don't know how to change it back.
Can someone TELL me how to undo this function please?

I am using Windows XP on this machine, SP3. I have looked in the control Panel for mouse settings, but they differ from the area where I set this up.

Thank you ImnoGuru.Go to start > programs and look for the brand of your mouse. There should be an option for settings which is usually different than control panel.Thank you rthompson80819 for your reply.

I dont quite know what it is you are saying here.

Go to start/ programs. Look for the mouse? ... Would that be in control panel?
or as a program for the mouse in the programs?

I have been to the CP and mouse ... drivers so on. Reset the settings eg use default. restarted. No change.. I have also done a restore for a week ago with no change.
I only changed this setting yesterday or 2 days ago maybe.

I "found" this settings change in some box that came up but can not remember where I found it and I haven't been able to find it again so far. It said .. for right mouse click to insert paste, check this box.... type of thing.

Would it be in the history at all?

My problem is that when I go to a web page and click in the taskbar, the last remembered copied item, is inserted, the paste box also comes up however, the paste function doesn't INTAKE the newest copied item. When I click on paste, the TITLE bar already has the last remembered copied item but does not replace that with the newest copied item.
I hope I have explained that adequately.Did you install a driver for this mouse? If so, that should have included software to control the functions for your specific mouse. Look on the desktop or in Programs.Thank you for your reply Allan. SORRY I haven't been able to get back to say TA for so long.
Christmas lead up has been more than full for me.
As it seems I had another problem and ended up having to do a restore on the drive. The first time it didn't change those settings for the mouse so I went further back and tried again and success. I don't know why I didn't think of doing that in the first place.
I think it was just stress.

Well all is good here finally and I'm back into action.
Once again thanks for your input.

Now to get back into learning something about webpages and how to build one.

Solve : Defrag not complete; Safe mode causes BSOD, but XP runs fine....?

Answer»

1. Defrag. Which disk defragmentation software have you used?

2. BlueScreenView. Download, unzip, and execute Nirsoft's "BlueScreenView". This utility will scan the minidump files created during BSOD crashes and display the information in one table. It also "attempts to "finger" the driver or software module that may be responsible for the crash.

It would be interesting to see what it comes up with.1. I've been using the defrag utility that comes with windows, but I tried MyDefrag last night. It didn't complete, either. Ran for about 15 minuted and no error messages.

2. BSOD - as you suggest I downloaded and ran BlueScreenView, but it says "No crashes". The c:/windows/minidump folder is empty. Where else might the info be SAVED?

Thanks, Lee

How do you know the defrag programs are not finishing the task?

First of all, they only run for 10 minutes or less.

Secondly, when I do a drive analysis by the Windows defrag program it still recommends defragging the drive.

And THIRD, the analysis/progress bar show solid color for the first ~20% of the graph, but the remainder is tiny multicolored stripes.

1. Backup Data. Suggest you backup "data" you can't afford to lose while the system is functional. Obviously something is not right, and you don't want to lose data while attempting to fix the system.

Safe Mode uses a pretty BASIC set of system files which you've verified with the System File Checker (sfc). I'm not sure what to say: hardware, system configuration, system registry, malware infection? You may be looking at a "repair" install or a complete "new" install.

2. System Restore Point. Do you have any "System Restore" points that predate the "troubles"?

Note: I seem to remember READING somewhile that system restore does not preserve "folders" and "files" stored on the desktop. You may want to move them under your user's "My Documents" folder.

2. BSOD - as you suggest I downloaded and ran BlueScreenView, but it says "No crashes". The c:/windows/minidump folder is empty. Where else might the info be saved?

The default location for the "info" is "%systemroot%\Minidump" which on your system is probably "C:\Windows\Minidump".

The "memory dumps" may have been deleted by "CCleaner". See if there's a "check" mark for the "Memory Dumps" category. Look on CCleaner "Windows" tab, in the "System" subsection.

Also verify your system is configured to generate memory dumps. To access:
a. Select "Start" menu.
b. Right-click "My Computer"; context menu appears.
c. Select "Properties"; "System Properties" windows appears.
d. Select "Advanced" tab; tabbed page comes to front.
e. Select "Settings" button within "Startup and Recovery" subsection; "Startup and Recovery" windows appears.
f. Look within "System failure" subsection:
(1) Verify "Automatically restart" box is "unchecked".
(2) Within "Write debugging information subsection, verify either "Small memory dump" or "Kernel memory dump" is selected from the pull down menu. Kernel memory dump permits deeper analysis (and still generates minidump to send to Microsoft if desired).
(3) Verify "Dump file" location. Default for "small memory dump" is "%SystemRoot%\Minidump"; "Kernel memory dump" is "%SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP". %SystemRoot% is an environment variable which resolves to directory path of your Windows installation. For you, probably "C:\Windows".
(4) You pick whether to check/uncheck "Overwrite any existing file".Quote

If you havent tried finding out what drive it is at this point I would.

I found out it was a Hitachi HDD and I have (to my knowledge) cleaned it out. This has not solved my problem, unless I am missing something here. I used a Hitachi boot CD thing from their manufacturer (Drive Fitness Tool), and the "erase disk" feature did not WORK because it said I had a "Non HGST" hard drive ( dont know what that means). So I used Darik's Boot & Nuke to erase it all, but the original problem is still there.Out of interest have you tried putting win98 back on it?
Remember you would have to FORMAT with a boot disk first.

boots from CD at start up

starts loading files

freezes at set-up is starting windows

Solve : SETUP FOR XP WILL NOT LOAD IDE BUS DRIVERS?

Answer»

I am attemptintg to repair and\or install XP on my COMPUTER. The problem is that setup hangs up when loading the drivers for the IDE bus. I've tried other XP disks and utililities disk with the XP recovery console on them. They all for the most part hang up when attempting to load Intel IDE bus drivers. The hard drive is SATA, the controlers are on the motherboard, and the SATA technology is enab;led in CMOS. It is a Compaq computer and has an AMD Sempron processor I also have RAN diagnostic tests on the computer's hardware including the CPU, drive memory etc. What gives?
1. Pick ONE and only one configuration to troubleshoot. Can't fix a "moving" target.

2. Are you doing a "repair" install or a "new" install? Windows XP doesn't TRANSFER well from one computer to another. It is meant to run on the system it was built for.

3. Which operating system and service pack level; e.g. Windows XP Professional SP3?

4. CMOS SATA settings in system BIOS. What modes are available for SATA and which ones have you set in CMOS?

5. IDE Channels. What if anything do you have connected to the IDE ports on the motherboard?

Solve : prevent changing wallpaper policy?

Answer»

i need to stop a limited user account from being able to change the desktop image and i have searched how to do that and used the "prevent changing wallpaper policy" but it only works for an admin account whenever i go back to the limited user account the menu under the desktop tab is still there !
any idea?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327998i have read that but how i can view the Local Computer Policy on a limited user pcI guess you would have to first INSTALL the Group Policy snap-in. Sounds like alot of work just to stop someone from changing the wallpaper. I think I would go with saying "Don't change the wallpaper or else....." indeed its alot of work but i came up with this because the warning about messing up the desktop didnt workQuote from: lavender on December 13, 2009, 03:50:09 AM

i have read that but how i can view the Local Computer Policy on a limited user pc

You don't.

Log into the computer with a user account that has administrative rights.but that only stops the admin from changing the wallpaperQuote from: lavender on December 13, 2009, 07:32:18 PM
but that only stops the admin from changing the wallpaper

Theoretically, it should stop all users under that user policy from doing so.

Is this on a domain of any kind or is this just a small workgroup of computers?

If it's on a domain, you should be enforcing the Group Policy from the domain controller and applying it to an organization unit (OU) full of users that you want to apply it to.

You can only do so much to secure a workgroup...

You might want to try this, though, if this computer is not on a domain:

1) Log into the computer with an account that has admin rights.
2) Temporarily GRANT the limited account admin rights.
3) Restart the computer.
4) Log into the account that you granted temporary admin rights to.
5) Follow the INSTRUCTIONS from cruisin702's post.
6) Restart the computer.
7) Log back into the account you granted temporary admin rights to.
Test. Can the account change their wallpaper? If yes, CHECK your local Group Policy settings and make sure you didn't miss anything. If no, restart the computer again.
9) Log back into the computer with the admin account.
10) Remove the admin rights from the account so that it'll be a limited user again.
11) Reboot.
12) Log back into the computer with the limited user account.
13) Check to see if the wallpaper can be changed. If so, start over (or consider a better security model than what's built into the Windows XP PC).they are all part of a workgroup so can i change that from the main pc?Yes. In fact, the instructions I gave should be done from the main PC.

Solve : A PC problem and In need of very fast replies.?

Answer»

WillNeedsHelpFast - My nickel's worth. More than once you have stated that you don't want to loose critical files so why don't you prioritize what you are doing.

Pick the best route from:
(a) Repairing a user profile during which files may be corrupted or lost.
(b) Backing up critical files to protect their integrity while repairing your system.

I know what my choice would be.

Good luck.

Key points.
Can you boot in Safe mode?
Cany you log in as administrator in safe mode.

We don't mean a user who is and administrator.
In safe mode there is another user called "Administrator: and he not the same as the other users. We use hime when things go wrong.
As the real system Administrator, you can have something the others users don't have.

So, can you boot in safe mode and log on as the Administrator with no trouble?

If you can not do that, then my prion suggestion is of little value.

No, I'll press F8. Choose Windows XP. But then it'll have me choose which user I want to use and NONE says "Administrator." Just the normal users.

Quote from: killerb255 on December 13, 2009, 07:26:00 PM
WRONG! You didn't follow directions.

Why did you sign into the old account? Why in the **** did you even THINK about signing into the old account?!!!!!

The only reason I can even imagine to sign into the corrupt account is that you forgot to give your new user account administrative rights.

If you gave your new account administrative rights and/or there is an Administrator account (like Geek-9pm) said, then you shouldn't even TOUCH the old account. Don't even imagine yourself in a faraway galaxy signing into that old account! Don't let your mom, DAD, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, finger, toe, facial air, arm hair, neck hair, LEG hair, toe hair, chest hair, dog, cat, mouse, bird, puma, elephant, donkey, or monkey sign into that account! If you have a nervous tic that types in the name of that account, CUT OFF YOUR FINGERS!

:takes a deep breath:

Now, did you create the new account?

Is there an Administrator account present on your computer, as Geek-9pm pointed out?

Did you copy C:\Documents and Settings\the old dead user account that you should never ever ever touch again\Desktop to C:\Documents and Settings\the new home of your account\Desktop? Yes? Good. No? DO IT! DOUBLE-TIME, SOLDIER!!!!

Did you copy C:\Documents and Settings\if you log into it you are dead\Favorites to C:\Documents and Settings\your new home get used to it\Favorites? Yes? Good. No. DO IT!

Did you copy C:\Documents and Settings\log into it and Samuel L. Jackson will get tired of **********ing people not following ***********ing directions and tell you to strap in 'cause he's going to blow up your computer\My Documents to C:\Documents and Settings\there's no place like home there's no place like home\My Documents? Yes? Good. No? Don't make Samuel L. Jackson angry!

Now, the last things you need to do:

1) Restart your computer.

2) Log into the NEW account.

3) Create a new FOLDER on your computer's C drive called "OLD PROFILE"

4) Move the entire C:\Documents and Settings\your old profile folder (not some, not most, ALL OF IT) to C:\OLD PROFILE. Is the folder in C:\Documents and Settings anymore? No? Good. Yes? Expect Samuel L. Jackson at your doorstep 'cause he's going to put your computer out of its misery.

5) Restart your computer again.

6) Log back into the new account.

Now...will the new account look EXACTLY like your old account? No.

Will it have your Desktop icons? Yes.

Will it have your Internet Explorer favorites? Yes.

Will it have your "My Documents" folder? If you followed directions, it will.

Will it have your Firefox bookmarks? Probably not, but that's why you have a copy of your old profile in C:\OLD PROFILE, so we can still get them back.

7) Now...go to Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> and delete the old account, finally putting the death knell in it. Why? 'cuz Samuel L. Jackson is a scary scary man.

If you are still missing stuff, dig around in C:\OLD PROFILES under your old account and copy whatever it is that you are missing to the corresponding folder in your new user account.

Well, I have 2 users on my computer. "Will" and "Kim". And I have been using Kim's which is the one this occured to me. I went to sign in and it gave me the messages, I perssed OK and it logged me into a temporary version of that user. When I press start, at the top it's got "Kim". It's got some of the stuff that I have had before. It also just got more. Like MSN started up when I started the user (which I never have that setting on to do so) but it's also pulling up Messenger Discovery. Which it wasnt even doing this about 6-8 hours ago when I used it.

Anyway, now when I start my computer up normally to get on, I choose "Kim" as the user. If I shouldn't be signing onto it and using it, I didn't know. I thought that if I did, it wouldn't mess up my profile and it'd just sign me into a temporary version of "Kim". Last night, I was workingon a video with some of my friends and I went to: My Computer > Local Disk > Documents & Settings > (Now in this, there are 6 folders) Kim > Kim's Documents and boom. There was all my documents from my "My Documents" folder. So, I need to be able to make a new profile, that has all of the this stuff and the stuff I had before all this *censored*. Unfortunatly, when I press F8 when I'm booting my computer, it'll tell me to choose an OS, I choose mine and it just lets me log in to "Kim" or "Will". I'm really clueless on what to do. Quote from: WillNeedsHelpFast on December 14, 2009, 01:32:04 AM

My guess is that you haven't actually booted into Safe Mode yet. When you hit F8 to get to safe mode and the screen comes up to select your operating system you may have to press F8 again or that doesn't work press Enter then tap F8 again. Using one of these options a screen should come up for you to select Safe Mode. If you have indeed seen the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" and selected "Safe Mode" there should be an administrator log in and the advice already given should be all you need. Hey! Just got back! Great news. It's fixed! I dont know why, but before when I press F8, it'd automatically bring me to the OS selection. This time, it let me boot in safemode, from there I just signed on as Admin and system restored back 2 days ago. So woo hoo!

No problemo.

Just for the record, I see why you signed into the corrupt account, even though you were told not to.

Sometimes I forget XP Home Edition is not like XP Professional. In XP Home Edition, you have no choice but to click on a name. You can't manually type in the name of the user account you want to sign into.

In this case, you did the right thing by going into Safe Mode, as this is the only way you can get to the admin account.

However, you can, in Safe Mode, create a new user account and give it administrator rights.

So I won't sick Samuel L. Jackson on you this time. Quote from: killerb255 on December 14, 2009, 08:45:46 AM

Actually, the default for XP Pro is to also use the welcome screen; I think both can be set to use the standard login box simply by shutting off the welcome screen.Quote

Solve : no video on monitor when trying to boot up?

I have a Gateway, windows xp system. When I boot up from shut down the monitor does not show anything except "no video" on screen, if you repeat the shutdown boot up process a number of times it will then work fine. you just can't shut down again or it will take the same nonsense to initiate. I have tried 3 monitors and the same thing. I finally took it for repair and they THOUGH it might be the powersupply, but no, still the same problem I am told it must be the motherboard and replace it along with probably a new box because everything might not fit back in because I have all the cd dvd and music extras. What do you think. ummmm i dunno about the psu it seems more like vid card and/or drivers

go to start right click my computer properties> hardware> device manager

and tells us if you see any red x or YELLOW ! or ? anywhereDouble check all connections going to the monitor.
Re-install your video drivers.
You didn't mention if this is ONBOARD video or an add in vid card.
If it is onboard video there is no NEED to replace the MBoard...just shop around for a video card that suits your needs.

You're right, a firewall does stop outgoing connections but adware usually doesn't work that way. It's not normally blocked by a firewall. Trojan horses are, but those aren't adware. Adware is (in a lot of CASES) like a website

If you can load a webpage, then an adware POPUP can be loaded. It uses your default browser (normally)

No, you were right.

Zylstra's explanation wasn't very technical, but adaware is related to websites and I think they usually connect to their master servers through the same port the browser does, and most firewalls are configured to let this traffic through.. Hence the reason why firewalls don't really work well unless they block internet traffic.

We'll leave the light on for you.ok after running AVG Free cleared all things it found but still not solved...

well I guess it times for a format been 2 months since the last one...Two reformats in two months? That's not a good sign.

It's probably quite a stretch, but you could give Start > Run > sfc /scannow (note the SPACE) a shot. You'll need your Windows CD.

You could also look around for any mention of this dll in the startup of msconfig or AVG Anti-Spyware (not the same as AVG Free).

I wish I could help more; it'd be a lot easier if I could actually find any information on this file. But I can't find any mention of it anywhere. You could post a HijackThis log, but there's only a slight chance of it helping. You never know, though.

Solve : This is strange... installing new programs??

Answer»

I have windows XP, pretty basic computer system and I am not that intelligent about computers, so bear with me here

This problem just started happening TODAY, actually, after I did my LAST spyware scan with Spy Doctor (which did find a few files and removed them) It now seems, that whenever I try to install a new program, I am able to download it, but when I click to run the installation I get a very weird blue screen! Not like, the 'blah blah blah' error message blue screen of death, but like my resolution changes all of a sudden to a smaller screen resolution and I see this blue screen with a bunch of glitches on it.. in which case, I am unable to move my mouse, and cannot restart or EXIT. Does this make any sense? It only happens when I try to install new programs, and completly FREEZES my computerWhat are you using for virus protection? Did you do your scans in safe mode? What happened prior to this?a somewhat outdated version of Norton is being used for virus protection, and my scans were done in regular mode. I have been having a couple weird problems lately with random browser windows popping up when not doing anything, so I ran the spyware check.. fixed that, so, nothing really DRASTIC happened before this. Didn't find any viruses last time I used Norton.. It's weird, I might try to install something, just so I can take a picture of the weird blue screen I am getting. It has no legible text on it...I suspect an infection (although it could be a hardware issue), but this might be a little hard to deal with if you can't install anything. Can you install anything in Safe Mode? Have you tried System Restore to go back to an earlier point?Quote

a somewhat outdated version of Norton is being used for virus protection,

With what is available Free this is unneccessary....
DLoad, install, update and run the following:

AVG Free or Avast Free.
Spybot
AdAware
AVG Anti-Virus

Let them fix anything they find. This may be a bit long-winded of a process but at least you will have a clean bill of health...

If the problem persists then post back as it is probably another issue...

Solve : Print Spooler?

How do I fix the problem, "the print spooler service is not RUNNING"?

I'm trying to install a new printer and the installation won't start. The message I get is, "processing cannot be continued because Print Spooler service has been stopped. Restart the computer to start the Print Spooler service and then try again". I restart several times and get the same message.

I tried troubleshooting the problem but nothing specifially addresses this issue. All fixes I have tried give me the message, "the print spooler service is not running". Go to Start --> Run, type services.msc and press enter.
Find Print Spooler, and set it to Automatic if it is not already.
Also, double click it and press Start.
Hope this helps. No doubt a USB printer. Try disconnecting the USB cable. Turn the printer off at the power button. Disconnect printer power cord. Reverse this procedure and reboot. If the installation is on a CD that came with the printer, cancel all found new hardware SCREENS on reboot. INSERT the CD and run the installation from there.Calum,

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Your suggestion worked PERFECTLY. I initially got a message about the dependency service or group failed to start but I did the same thing you told me to do to the dependencies it listed as I did to the print spooler and presto, I CAN PRINT!!!!

I really appreciate all the people like you who paid attention in class. I hope you are somewhere making a lot of money for your knowledge. I'll be looking for you if I need help again.....
You're more than welcome, glad I could help.
Just make sure they're all set to Automatic or you'll have to keep starting them each time you want to print.
Oh, and I'm making no money as yet, haha.

Solve : encountered an error?

I'm trying to run a Spanish learning program on CD that I bought but I keep getting this error message when I try to open the exe. file to run the program. It says xxx.exe has encountered an error and must close. The CD is installed ok but no matter what I get this error message. I've tried all the usual stuff such as RESTARTING the computer, removing and reinstalling the program, repairing the program with the repair feature on the CD , starting the computer in safe mode, made sure of plenty of ram and hd SPACE. I notified the company I bought the program from and they emailed me a zip file of the CD but after unzipping and using those folders/files I still get the same error message. The program placed an icon on the desktop but when I click on that I get the same error message. I've shut down Zone ALARM and AVG virus programs, shut down any program using the sound card, still no result. This is with XP pro. Any advice? Thanks much!Have you right clicked on the icon and changed compatability mode?

Maybe it won't run in XP.What's the name of the program? What are its requirements? The name is Visual Link Spanish. No requirements that the average computer doesn't have. I have gotten this error on other applications for example at odd times when I open or try to open Win Media Player. If I restart it will open Is this an XP compatible program?Just for the heck of it, I'd update AVG and SCAN in Safe Mode to see if it finds anything unwanted.

The drivers may have been deleted somehow. Did you try reinstalling them?

Right click on My Computer and go to Properties. Click on the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button. Do you see anything in the list with a yellow question mark or exclamation point?

Also, open up your Control Panel and go to Sounds And Audio Devices. Click on the Audio tab. Is your sound card selected?Quote from: wolfman on May 05, 2007, 06:18:59 PM

I had sound a few days ago. The local computer place installed a CD/DVD player because I was having problems with it. Anyways no I have no sound and have checked multiple speakers. Where should I start?

Go back to the "local computer place" ask them"Where's my
sound"?It's XP on a AMD athlon XP 2400. The sound card is a creative sound blaster Audigy SE. I couldn't find the CD but I did download the drivers from the website. There are no question or exclamation marks. And the sound blaster is listed as the default. Let me know what you think. ThanksThe most common cause is plugging speakers into the wrong port.

We still don't even know what motherboard this is. If it has onboard sound also, this needs to be disabled. Perhaps they MONKEYED with the BIOS settings? It MIGHT be your best bet to give them a call and ask them about it. Just a simple "Hey, you guys installed CD/DVD on my computer and now my sound doesn't work." They might be willing to help you out. After all, it did SEEM to happen on their watch.I would just get a new machine...but that's me.

Solve : Help! Unit will not recognise hard drive?

Answer»

I have a home made unit from a couple of years ago that while old I dont want to dump just yet. I posted on here a while BACK about this machine. At the time it was acting funny freezing up running real slow at times also when you go to add remove programs in the control panel it would never populate the list. After tring EVERYTHING virus programs etc I formated the hard drive. It was a western digital and it promptly died. So after reading the reviews I got a seagate 300 gig.

Reloaded windows xp pro. Dang thing acts almost the same takes forever to populate the add remove program screen but finally does. And get this when I try to check my email it will not show the text just a big blank page. Also I have a 2nd western digital hd that has all my music on it. If I click on it the machine tries to format it. That one was working fine before I formated and installed the new hd.

Specs: dfi board with amd athlon 3200 plus processor, 2) 512 memory sticks, antec 350 watt power SUPPLY, 24 bit sound blaster card, xfx video card etc. After getting your new drive, did you install Antivirus and Antispyware/adware?

What happened prior to the slowing down? Anything in particular? how is your motherboard is it in good shape? what about the cable connecting the hhd to the motherboard??If you had errors on the install it may have dropped the HDD back into PIO mode which is really slow....this can be checked in Control Panel by right clicking IDE1 and checking properties.Yes I installed defender pro antivirus and anti spy. I am using the windows firewall. I am not sure how to check the mother board but it is a good quality board and has some nice cables that came with it. I do have extras maybe I could change them to be sure. I will checkthe ide1 when I get home.go to the manufacture of the motherboard and of the harddrive and download the diagnostic tools for each and burn them to cds and run them I ran a memory test and it came back with errors. So I pulled one stcik out and rechecked. The same I traded sticks and still the same. The read me file said that this would point to the motherboard as the culprit. Also it is getting worse now there are dotted line running across the screen. Its not the monitor because they move when you change screens.

So if I replace the motherboard what would be a good choice? This unit is mostly just used for surfing the net and I just bought a new power supply so I dont want to start over with a duel processor. I found a ton of new boards on Ebay. But I probably want a new processor also......Quote from: UNLOVEDWARRIOR on April 26, 2007, 08:01:37 PM

go to the manufacture of the motherboard and of the harddrive and download the diagnostic tools for each and burn them to cds and run them

Don't spend too much time looking for motherboard diagnostic CD's. There aren't any. Frige:
You might as well get a new computer.
But if you wanted to, www.newegg.com has great Mother Board replacements, and new CPU's
Just be sure to FIND one that fits in your current case, since if it doesn't, there isnt much you can do.

Giving up quickly there aren't you Zylstra?

Have you tested the RAM and hard drive yet? Free diagnostics are available. Quote from: patio on April 26, 2007, 06:18:58 AM

Solve : Reinstallation Lag. Fix??

Answer»

Hello new to this WEBSITE, so

Synopsis: Reinstalled Xp pro major CPU usage for basic things
lag internet lag everything

Reinstalled Windows XP Professional, installed all updates auto updater said (SP Two current) and the computer is lagging bad since re installation.

Specs
Dell 4700
Cpu- Intel core 2 duo (2.8 GHZ) per core
Windows Xp Proffesional (5.1, build 2600)

Thanks for the help in advance.Did you reinstall your motherboard and video drivers? These can be found on the Dell site.

Did you format the drive during the reinstall or what?

What are you using for virus/spyware protection? Was all of this loaded BEFORE you even connected the cable to the internet? Thanks for the reply.

Reinstalled all drivers found on the resource cd with the computer,
I think i formated the drive i deleted the old partion and made a new one.
Using Norton antivirus and spyware, also installed iolo systemmechanic installed immediately after
installation it found that major system CLUTTER although that could be from my inexperience, i didnt notice lag after installation but before i downloaded service pack two. I've never HEARD of or used System Mechanic...but a quick search found This less than glowing review...
You might want to try the machine without it for comparitive purposes...

For example it shouldn't have shown this right after a clean install....i would be wary....After uninstall same high cpu usage and lag. Dang sho;uld have read reviews though a best buy person directed it toward me.... i am going to try uninstalling service pack two.Quote

This is not a good idea...

Are you sure you are looking at CPU usage and not processes usage ? ?

Best Buy probably recommended it to keep the Geek Squad busy.unusally high cpu usage, before i reinstalled xp had same running reprocesses and didnt slow it down one bit its a pretty high powered processor not the bleeding edge but....

Do a COLD boot...wait two minutes then take a screenshot of all your running tasks and post it here.

Solve : Assign Media Player To Non-Default Soundcard?

Answer»

I have Win XP Pro, Svc. Pack 2

I've just STARTED using Skype and have it assigned to the default soundcard, which is the INCLUDED sound chip.

I'd like to assign Windows Media Player to a *non-default*, third- party soundcard. Does ANYONE know how to do this?

i dont think you can do that... why would you want to??I want the sound quality that's associated with the E-mu soundcard. But there's also a practical reason. The E-mu's outs go to a digital piano that has six speakers - doubles as a stereo.

I don't need great sound quality for Skype, and my headset has a two-prong termination that goes into the computer case.

So I'm hoping that there's a way to get Media Player to not use the default chip and instead be mapped to the E-mu card.

OK, got it! In Media Player's toolbar, I clicked Tools, Options. The Options Window has a lot of tabs. Clicked Devices, then Speakers. Voila! Media Player now goes out thru the E-mu card to the piano's line ins, and Skype STILL uses the on-board SoundMax chip. (SoundMax still shows as the default device in Windows' Control Panel.)
So your onboard sound chip and your sound card are both running ? ?
Interesting.ummm... ok glad you solved your own problemI thought it would be difficult to assign Media Player to a non-default sound device. Had visions of having to go into an .ini file or something else that I wouldn't understand.

Being able to use Skype and Media Player in a convenient way is a real plus. I didn't want to give up E-mu's sound quality and it just isn't practical to switch drivers when I get an incoming Skype call. Plus, I've never had good luck messing with Windows. I like to get a setup that works and stay with it.

Solve : xp closedown / RESOLVED?

Answer»

Hi people, Have used you experts before and was very impressed.

My problem this time is:-

I have loaded XP Prof. as a replacement for ME on a COMPUTER I am playing with. When I close it down it SAYS "it is now SAFE to turn off your computer" and that is it. It does not turn off on it's own like it did with ME (and like it does on my "good" computer. There is presumably a setting SOMEWHERE that needs enabling?

Your advice as always is appreciated.

Thanks, Graham.if you go into Control Panel, and open "Power management" is there an "APM" TAB? If you click on it, does it show a check for Enable Advanced Power management Support?

Hi Contrex,
You are a genius. Problem solved.

Thanks a lot.

Solve : Trying to Run Windows Memory Diagnostic?

Answer»

Hi Forum,
I need to run Windows Memory Diagnostic, and am having trouble MAKING my computer boot from the Boot CD that the program has CREATED. The instructions were written in 2003. I have Windows XP Home Edition SP2, a Dell Dimension 47-00 1,024MB Physical Memory, 534MB Available, 2GB Virtual Memory. I need DETAILED instructions for getting into the BIOS mode, and what to do there.
Thank you!!
Mike
F2 to access the BIOS when the computer starts (you will see it onscreen) and then CHOOSE the Boot order option and make sure the CD is before the hard drive. If its a dell computer, you should have a lodaing screen with the word DELL written in the background and a loading bar at the bottem. At the top right cornet it should say 'F12 - Boot Menu'
Press F12 before the loading bar fills up. You will be directed to a PLACE where you choose where to boot from.
Use the arrow keys to navigate to the CD Drive and press enter and your computer will boot with the CD.

Solve : 3 Problems...Not sure if they are related?

Answer»

I tried to look if this was anywhere but I didn't find it.

I have three issues with my computer:

1. when I type a web ADDRESS in the address bar on Internet Explorer and hit enter or go, nothing happens.

2. When I TRY to open My Computer it searches but nothing happens.

3. I tried to send a file to a zippped file and it just froze up completely.

I'm at a loss for what to do to fix this. It's my work computer and I can't do anything. I'm running Window XP Media Center.more info plz? OS when did all of these things start?? any new software install before these things STARTED??
what protections do you have on your computer??
anti-virus? anti-malware??she has xp media center edition , ( xp pro SP2 )
for the IE problem try window's update ( access it though Start, then programs ,near the top of the lists )
check your antivirus programs RUN SCANS , and also try" trend micro "online scan It sounds to me like you might have a virus
or just try a reboot and see if that helps

you could also try a different restore point one from a couple of days ago when it last worked correctlyI have rebooted. Done virus scan, spyware scan and system restore.

I'll try windows upddate but I think I did that already as well.what scans did you do??I did my virus scan, the online one from a previous post and spyware.

None of it has helped so far.whats programs did you use??SBC Yahoo, trend Micro and AVG Free.you only need one antivirus any more can cuase problems, i suggest you keep AVG

also look at my signature and get any programs you dont have they are all free. update them then run the scans in safe mode one at a time

Solve : PC Shuts down / Restarts on itself?

Answer»

Hi All, i SEEM to have a similar issue

As soon as i turn on the PC it shuts down on itself and also restarts at times in approx 10-15 minutes of turning on. Further i've checked the temperature and voltage using the intel motherboard utility and all seems normal. The power supply and the CPU fans are also working fine. The problem does not occur while working in safe mode.

The RECENT change i made in the PC was installation on Office 2007, however i dont feel this COULD be responsible for the problem.

Its Windows XP SP2, P4 2.8ghz, 512MB Ram, Additionally i've also installed an AGP graphic card long back.

wud b really gr8 if any of u can provide ur views n suggestions
sbablani ...... You might try checking the event log to see if there are any entries which correspond with the shutdowns ....... Perhaps that will give you a clue.

What the heck. You typed this really neat and proper post and all of a sudden it degraded into something Myspacey..

Do we have to be WORRIED?

Anyhow, go into safe mode and see if it happens there. If it doesn't, it's a software problem and I think it's time for a virus scan and/or repair installation. Quote

Solve : Bluescreen - "Stop: c000026c"?

Answer»

My SYSTEM is a 2002 Custom, Win 2000Pro, SP4, P4 1.8, IBM HD. I believe problem started yesterday when my antispyware/antivirus AVAST and AVG gave alert of intrusion and I told it to fix problem. I then immediately ran Adaware, Spybot, AVG Antivirus, AVAST, and Spydoctor, rebooting each time. At start up each time, after OS completely rebooted, a message appeared saying a drive could not be installed and to restart windows. I would click "OK" and computer ran fine. It was a file I didn't recognize and computer seemed to run fine, so I ignored it. There were 4 malicious files that could not be fixed, so I was running Adaware the second time when about one minute into the process, blue screen appeared. Upon rebooting the bluescreen with this message appeared: "STOP: c000026c (Unable to Load Device Driver) \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\NDIS.SYS device driver could not be loaded. Error Status was 0xc0000221" I rebooted in safe mode to check device manager, everything seemed OK. Normal reboot still is giving me the same Bluescreen.

Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
I went to C:\WINNT\system32\drivers and noticed that NDIS.SYS file was last accessed 5/28/07 11:38 PM EST and it is empty, ie, 0 KB. That is the approx time I got the Bluescreen. Could that be the problem? If so, how did it get emptied (if such a thing makes sense) and where do I get it?I hate to break it to you, but if that system file was gone, your drive is screwed over. get a new C drive and youll be good as new.Quote from: ms_dos_sux on May 29, 2007, 02:22:30 PM

I hate to break it to you, but if that system file was gone, your drive is screwed over. get a new C drive and youll be good as new.

What type of advice is this ? ? If it didn't boot should he buy a whole new machine ? ?

Marco errors relating to that file sometimes involve certain network cards...
So post any info you can on what network HARDWARE is in that machine. Find that info in Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager....

In the meantime you can try the following...Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your Win2K CD handy as it will ask for it.

Let it run til it finishes and re-boot. This may help. Meantime gather that other info...I thought same thing, so rebooted safe mode to make sure, file showed up. I did a Win2000 repair install and everything seems to be working so far. svchost.exe keeps giving me an error message, could this be problem with a virus or spyware? Thanks for input. Thanks Patio. Out of curiosity, what would the sfc /scannow have done? May have been a better alternative to Repair Install as I feared losing data with it, only thing I lost appears to be some of my settings. Svchost.exe still giving me error messages, seems to be quite busy in Task Manager.SFC is System File Checker...it basically looks at all Windows system files and determines if they are intact and in good shape...any it finds that are mangled/moved it overwrites with originals.
You did no harm with a repair install thank goodness you were familiar with it...i've seen plenty of users that panic when problems arise and format and re-install and wonder where their data and programs have gotten off to.

There can be numerous causes for svchost acting on steroids but for now i would update and run all your protection programs and do a clean boot when you're done.

Post a list of which ones you have and we can offer some tips there as well....

BTW Welcome Aboard and i HOPE you enjoy your stay !your computer is bein attacked by a virus get the error message number (c000026c) and google it, u will get symtoms, causes and solution to how you can fix your problem e.t.c.

WELLCOME TO "COMPUTER BRAIN" SCAPTIC(IF U GOT ANYTHING U WANT JST CONTACT ME "MR COMPUTER")Ran Spybot, Adaware SE, Avast Antivirus, AVG Antivirus/Antispyware, Spyware Doctor several times, rebooting each time. Problem appears to be resolved. Suggestions on other Utilities I could run, like a good Optimization Utility would be appreciated. Thanks for your help. That's a fairly decent protection package you have...you might want to add CCleaner and you should be good to go.

Right click the drive in My Computer, select Properties/Tools and run both defrag and error checking.
This could take some time if it hasn't been run in awhile so grab a CUP of coffee...Patio, CCleaner done cleaned up the System!!!! Would you recommend a Optimization/Diagnostic utility like Ashampoo, System Mechanic, or Sandra Lite or other, to tweek system to include hardware & OS? Or do I have enough utilities going on? thanks for your help.I suggest just doing just the regular maintenence along with running your protection programs and keeping them updated...
I've tried all you mentioned and although some have some nice features i found the resources trade off was not to my liking.

Staying on top of things along with a weekly defrag works the best for me...on all OS's i run except Ubuntu.

p.s. If you do DECIDE on tweaking be sure to have a solid backup strategy in place as things can go South rather rapidly...i recommend Acronis True Image as a backup program

I use TweakUI.

Solve : Windows XP loooong boot time!?

Answer»

we have some users running windows XP with sp2 that are experiencing a looooong boot time. between 10-15 minutes on 'applying computer settings' after typing in their Domain password. Has anyone run into this??Is this like at a school where you log in with a specific account and it loads your personal settings?
YES, I suppose it would be equivilant to that. We are not in school but in the WORKPLACE. I'm not very good at this stuff, but perhaps there is something wrong with the server where all the accounts are on...
Hang on a bit and someone will come with an answer.

I do have a question though, are you in the workplace know?
Yes, I am at work. I don't think it's a problem with our Domain Controller - the problem is not happening to everyone. Don't really SEE any ERROR in the event log on the user's machine.. kinda baffling. It sounds to me like you are having problems connecting to the server to verify the account
Here are a few suggestions:

Check the LAN cable from the PC to the wall port to make sure it is good. Or replace it.
Test the cable in the wall port to the patch panel.
test the patch panel cable to the switch.
Update NIC drivers

Have fun.
My Network guy has pretty much done all of that already.. I'll have to keep poking around : ) thanks!Log on as an administrator remove your profile and then re-log on as you so that it creates a new profile. If it still takes a long time then I would think you have a connectivity problem with the server.

Solve : Media Center XP needs to be reinstalled?

Answer»

Some of my Icons will not work and I have been receiving DATA EXECUTIOn PREVENTION errors for some of the same programs. The vendor suggest that I do a clean install of XP. This sounds a little scary for a "newbie". Any suggestions or a "walk though" post would be appreciated! Thanks for any assistance.Do you mean that the icons on your desktop dont work? If so, have you tryed going into your start menu and getting to your MEDIA center like that? Do you have any other information you can give me?I tried start command and run command. What is funny is all of my restore points before 5/29/07 are gone ALSO. I restored to the earliest point left and the program (Cyberlink- Power Director) did start. I use it once and the next time, a couple of hours later, the icon would not work. I tried all the OPTIONS suggest by Cyberlink's tech support and reinstalled serval times with no results. They now say that XP probably has become corrupted and a clean install is the only solution. That sounds a little scary. Any suggestions of the steps I need to take to do that, the programs that will have to be reinstalled, the files I need to back up etc.?Another Option

In a REPAIR install of XP your programs and data are left intact...you need an XP CD to do this not a manuf. Restore CD...
