Solve : Defrag Error on XP.? |
Answer» HELLO I am working on my Fiance's Grandfathers computer.I am trying to run a Defrag of the hard drive but it GIVES me the error MMC cannot open the file C:\PROFRA~1\DISKEE~2\DISKEE~1.MSC. This may be because file does not exist,is not an MMC console,Or was created by a later version of MMC.This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file. Any Ideas on what I should do?WELCOME to the CH forums. Please read this.. Need to know if MMC is being used, are you attempting to defrag using Diskeeper from the Admin ACCOUNT or from a User account with Admin privileges. It sounds as if DisKeeper is installed on that machine which is a third party defrag program... First see if it shows up in the Start Menu...if so try it from there. If it doesn't then they may have tried it and uninstalled it. If so DLoad and install DisKeeper Lite which is the Free version...re-boot and it should then run properly. The other thing to try is after a fresh re-boot of the system go to Start/Run and type in services.msc and hit ENTER...locate the DisKeeper service; right clik it and select Start. It may be disabled by default. The 3rd thing it may be is the drive has errors. Again go to Start/Run and type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter...let it run to completion and re-boot. Then Defrag should run properly... Good Luck and let us know... |

Solve : DVD-R Drive not working.? |
Answer» First, some background information. No it probably wouldn't as the drivers for the DVD need to be on the boot drive which would be the Windows HDD... I never needed to install any SATA drivers for the DVD drive in the first place. How would I go about finding SATA drivers? Doesn't windows AUTOMATICALLY have drivers for Hard drives and DVD-R drives? I think the problem might be more complicated, as I said, I've already tried all the basic troubleshooting. It may be worth reiterating that the DVD drive only seemed to screw up after installing the drivers for my mother-board. I'm willing to try re-installing the SATA drivers, however, I wouldn't know where to start as FAR as obtaining them. |

Solve : Starting a little used program ...? |

Answer» ..... that has been disabled in the start-up menu to reduce start-up time. What are you using to dis-able startup apps ? ? Ah Just re-read my question, sorry but I have got it wrong what I meant to ask was "How do I disable little used applications in the start menu to reduce start-up time, then find them again to use when required" Only two things gained by hurrying "Bust fingers and b**t**d baby's" Sorry about that and as you have no DOUBT gathered I am a non-techy type DOWNLOAD and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. Uncheck any items you don't want starting with the system. You can always re-enable them in the future if you like. And my post above tells you where to find the programs.Get it here: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml.You can manage startup programs with ccleaner. Instructions here on how to get it working. Solve : Windows Shut Down? |
Answer» hi here is the entire scenario for the past few months occasionally my computer has had this problem where ill be on the internet and a bunch of windows will just pop up repeatedly i figured it was a virus (since my file numbers were always increasing) but i could never find anything so i would just restart my computer STOP 0x0000007B This can also indicate wrong/faulty drivers...been experimenting with new drivers lately ? ?Quote Can you boot to Windows at all, or you're stuck with errors?hi its me i changed the boot sequence so cds would launch first i reinstalled vista and everything else and im fine i just have a minor problem which i am going to start a new topic for it but thanks for your help Nice job I tend to think that this is some sort of tricky virus. I've had this happen to T W O computers in a WEEK's time... one of them being a hardly used Compaq desktop barely a year old, the second one being an ancient Toshiba Satellite laptop. Since I'm not a computer whiz, I could be wrong, but has anybody explored that possibility?Quote from: augustmp on December 07, 2009, 10:21:59 PM I tend to think that this is some sort of tricky virus. Solve : Is there any way to boot XP with out using CD Room Media? |
Answer» I have problem with my CD Room, Thats why I could not boot from CD Room, I want to know that is there any other way to boot XP with out using CD Room?Do you mean CD ROM? Why do you need to boot from a CD ROM to get into XP?Well, you could always go to another room. Sounds like it's one of the newer netbooks that shipped with Linux possibly and he's attempting to install XP on it...Yes, and it would help if the original poster would have given us more details about what kind of computer he has and how long he has had it and how he lost the operating system. Otherwise, we are all making guesses in the dark.I hate tripping over the coffee table in the dark. Thanks for your comments guys, If I have already windows XP installed on the Notebook and now I want to renew it (completely renew it), There is one way i know you should have the backup for XP in the hard drive and just update your onlder operating system with it with running the setup of backup you have. but it just updates the old operating system. but I want to completely renew it like i want to FORMAT the partition (back up is in another partition). Having already installed operating system could be useful in re-installing the OS? One thing more can we boot from USB if I don't have option in bios to boot from USB?If it's not an option listed in the BIOS....No.Quote from: dvdreplication on December 21, 2009, 06:20:12 AM Having already installed operating system could be useful in re-installing the OS? Yes, but the currently installed operating system probably will not let you "format" the partition it is located on. (Out of a strong sense of self-preservation. Reference "HAL" 9000 computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey.) The computer needs instruction to locate, load, and initiate the Windows XP setup program. This can be be accomplished by using the boot BIOS to initiate a chained series of boot programs or an already available compatible operating system. |

Solve : Random freezes after startup? |
Answer» I work in a computer lab at a community health center. I just started WORKING there and I realized no one in the building had any of the admin passwords to the computers. I brought in a Windows password reset disc and reset all of the admin passwords. This is when I got the bright idea to install the Adobe creative sweet at work off of my external HD. I only tried this on my computer, and the installation failed. Half of the CS was installed and half wasn't. This seemed to have caused some problems for me. So you've only tried this on you own home computer so far, right? You didn't do this to any of the work computers, right? 1. I have done this on the work computers. The computers are very poor and there is only about 6 computers. When I reset the passwords on them, they all worked fine. I use one of the computers as my own personal one (That clients can't touch), and that is the one that has the problem. 2. This happened a few days ago, the external drive was removed after the installation failed. I doubt it caused the problem. 3. No, I haven't been to device manager yet. 4. I haven't been to event viewer yet (I do not think) 5. It is not any of the services. I forgot to mention that I tried disabling all of the services and enabling all of the startup programs. It didn't work. 6. It is either Norton or Symantec that is on the computers. I highly doubt my external HD or the computer has a virus on it. I barely put anything on my external HD. The whole building has a proxy on it. It stops employees from going on sites they shouldn't be on while at work. The computer lab it self has Cyber Patrol, which is another proxy ontop of the proxy already in the building. It does not allow for clients to download anything and it also keeps them off of gambling, online shopping, etc.A little update: When I tried starting it up today without any startup values enabled, it froze. I disabled all of the services (except the microsoft ones) and it has frozen again. I will try a virus scan. Edit: Tried the scan and nothing showed up. It's clean. There are no errors in event viewer. I ran chkdsk, and disk cleanup.Quote There are no errors in event viewerI've never seen single computer without any errors in Event Viewer. Please download VEW and save it to your Desktop: http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe Double-click VEW.exe then under Select log to query, select: Application System Under Select type to list, select: Critical (Vista only) Error Click the radio button for Number of events Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box Then click the Run button. Notepad will open with the output log. In Notepad, click Edit > Select all then Edit > Copy Reply to this post, click in the reply window and press Ctrl+V on your keyboard to paste the log. Yeah, there were a few errors. I overlooked them because I've started my computer up in safe mode for almost a week, so most of the errors were with safe mode. Quote Vino's Event Viewer v01c run on Windows XP in EnglishI don't see any errors, which would cause freezing. How much free space do you have on your hard drive? Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in: msconfig Click OK (hit Enter in Vista). Click on Startup tab. Click Disable all IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries. Click Services tab. Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services Click Disable all. Click OK. RESTART computer in Normal Mode. NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running. If you use Windows firewall, you're fine. Same problem?I have 90% of the space free on my hard drive, that's not the problem. I have already tried disabling everything, and it froze. I will try once again on Thursday (the next time I work.). I also did a disk defrag, but it still freezes.Disabling the startup and services did not help. I still have the same problem.Go to start /run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter... Have your Windows CD handy as it may ask for it... Let it run to completion and re-boot. If this shows no apparent good signs then you need to address the most common reasons for freezing: Bad RAM DLoad and run MemTest...follow the guide for creating a bootable CD. Let it run at least 2 hours... Any errors at all and you have a bad stik of RAM. HDD errors. Again DLoad and follow the info on creating a bootable CD from the drive manuf. site... Run the long test. Bad/flakey power supply... Borrow a known good one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there... If the above tests all passed and it still does the same thing chances are it's the PSU.When it type in sfc /scannow nothing happens (I am in safemode) Having the windows CD may be a problem... My boss has no idea where any of the discs are. These computers were put in before I started working here. I am sure it's nothing hardware related. The computer towers are all new. I think they were bought in the summer time. Could it possibly be the program called clean slate causing the problem? It's a program that resets the files back to normal after each restart. It half works. I can install some things when I'm on the admin account, but other things don't stay.Quote I work in a computer lab at a community health center. I just started working there and I realized no one in the building had any of the admin passwords to the computers. I brought in a Windows password reset disc and reset all of the admin passwords. This contradicts what you're telling us...Quote from: patio on December 17, 2009, 05:14:40 PM This contradicts what you're telling us... How so? |

Solve : Open all extensions of type .x with a particular account? |

Answer» Hello there fellas. Nice, but the path was not correct. ignore the command key- it's unused. Additionally, that "weird" value is inserted by several cracks/pirate copies of 2007.Or perhaps that 'weird' part is an octal/hexadecimal/other system translation to ASCII. Doesn't mean it's infected. A reply like that coming front a moderator.. I don't mean offense, but that was a BIT noobish. So, what's the solution, since this one doesn't appear to work?Treval, you're the one that's coming over, not exactly 'noobish', but certainly 'dorkish'. People are good enough to try to help you and you throw their efforts back in their faces with snarky remarks. You are infected. Being in denial about it and moreover being discourteous to the people who told you is not exactly going to get you a flood of help on here. Just my 2 cents worth. How can I be infected if I've thoroughly scanned with NOD32 and Norton Internet Security and they both say I don't have any infections? Perhaps some malware scans too?Quote How can I be infected if I've thoroughly scanned with NOD32 and Norton Internet Security and they both say I don't have any infections? So you've got 2 AVs running? BTW, AVs don't pick up everything - that's why you'll never see a "100% detection rate". No, I don't have 2 AV's running, however I have NOD32 with advanced heuristics and everything set. NOD32 is the best AV out there, I've read the reviews/charts. It's also used by my college's WLAN admins. The Norton Security Scan was that online scan. It usually detects 1 more virus than NOD32 (probably because it's in RECLYCER, I don't know). Anyway, now I'm scanning with MalwareBytes & SpyBotSD. I must say my laptop runs smooth and nice so I have no problems. It's hardly cookie/*ware infested. In fact, it's not. I have a firewall that blocks cookies and I block all domains except those I accept. I have adblock plus, noscript for firefox, hostsman. I have to say I'm pretty well protected. In my opinion it's too much of a hassle to be running 5 different products to know if you're 100% clean. It's just a waste of my time.. I have other things to do.. |

Solve : Activated Windows is Asking for Activation Again and Original Key Doesnt Work? |
Answer» Have an HP computer G60. It came preloaded with windows 7. I dont like windows 7 or windows vista, so I DECIDED to buy a retail windows XP disk, and install that on the machine. This was about a couple weeks ago. Yesterday, I noticed the computer asking me to activate windows. I had activated it when I first LOADED it onto the machine. There have been no hardware changes made to the machine. Why is it asking me for activation again? Whats even more funny is that the key that I put in the first time doesnt activate windows anymore. Whats going on? How do I stop the thing from asking me for the activation key and giving the countdown of days? Quote There have been no hardware changes made to the machine. That will force activation. How activation works varies with which version of Windows XP you have. With the retail versio0n you have to deal directly with Microsoft. If it was an HP version of Windows XP you could have them help you. Did you keep a backup of the Windows 7? Does HP offer a 'downgrade' to XP for that PC? Where do you LIVE? In the USA you can call a 800 number and get assistance from Microsoft. (888) 571-2048 geek: are you saying that hardware changes will cause a need to reactivate? If so, there have been no hardware changes, I just loaded windows xp onto a computer that had win 7 preloaded. And now its asking me for activation two weeks later. It didnt complain about activation when I first put in the key, and from then to now, the machine has haad no changes. So why is it all of a sudden asking for activation again, and further more why doesnt the key work anymore?I would do have Geek said and call Microsoft. The key is no good because it was used to many times. The fix is to call Micarosoft. |

Solve : PC hang-up after loading winXP? |
Answer» When I turned on my desktop the monitor went black screen after loading winXP and then the mouse and keyboard hang-up. I reboot my desktop then pressed F8 then choose Enable VGA mode but still the same result so I went to safe mode and reinstalling my videocard NVDIA 9400, still the same result. I really don't know what have caused this, I searched through the net and read something about videocard or ram malfunction. I really need some help. I'm using windows xp sp2, Pentium 4(2.6Ghz), CTR monitor, 1gb nvdia 9400 and 2gb RAM. Thanks..Does you motherboard has a built-in video card? When I turned on my desktop the monitor went black screen after loading winXP and then the mouse and keyboard hang-up.1. How can you tell (if monitor went black screen)? Or is it displaying data to the "black" screen? Quote from: dthscyth on December 14, 2009, 07:45:16 PM I reboot my desktop then pressed F8 then choose Enable VGA mode but still the same result so I went to safe mode and reinstalling my videocard NVDIA 9400, still the same result.2. Windows Advanced Options menu. a. Did you try "Last known good configuration"? b. Were you able to successfully boot to Safe Mode with a visible display once you go there (and logged in)? In other words is Safe Mode available for your use.1. How can you tell (if monitor went black screen)? Or is it displaying data to the "black" screen? - Completely black screen. I didn't hear the welcome sound of windows. 2. Windows Advanced Options menu. a. Did you try "Last known good configuration"? b. Were you able to successfully boot to Safe Mode with a visible display once you go there (and logged in)? In other words is Safe Mode available for your use. - Last known good configuration has the same result. Yes, safe mode is accessible..The question was - how do you know the mouse and keyboard don't work if the screen is blank? When I pressed the numlock the light on the keyboard would not turn off.So that means the mouse and keyboard are locked? Have you tried a different display just to make sure that's not the problem?1. Please confirm: a. Computer WORKS fine in Safe Mode. b. Computer does NOT successfully login thru "Enable VGA mode". c. You're using a "CRT" monitor (approximate age of monitor). 2. "Monitor went black screen after loading winXP". Please describe with more detail last screen or SCREENS you see before display goes "black". Would like better idea of how far the system start/boot process gets before "black" screen. 3. Enable Boot Logging. You might also want to research "Enable Boot Logging" which logs device drivers as they're loaded to the hidden system file %systemroot%\Ntbtlog.txt which usually resolves to "C:\Windows\Ntbtlog.sys". If the file isn't too large you may cut and paste contents (post) to this thread for "normal" boot attempt. This isn't something I've worked with before, but it's worth a shot. Access this mode from the Windows Advanced Options menu. See enable-boot-logging-for-fixing-startup-problems 4. Current Thoughts. My first thought was your "display properties" (screen RESOLUTION, color depth, and/or refresh rate) were set outside the range your CRT monitor can handle. In this scenario you're able to boot to Safe Mode because it loads standard Microsoft VGA driver with "conservative" values. Normally you're also able to boot "Enable VGA mode" which loads the current display driver (Nvidia) to a VGA submode that all drivers are expected to support. From the "Enable VGA mode" and possibly Safe Mode (not positive about Safe Mode), you then reset the "display properties" to values the CRT supports and then reboot to normal mode. I'm surprised "Enable VGA mode" did not boot for you (perhaps its driver is corrupt). After the splash screen(where you type your password) the monitor goes blank. This is the ntbtlog.txt. It has 13569 lines so I cut a portion of the text file to paste here. Solve : Getting online? |
Answer» Well my computer was working perfectly fine last night and now shows to be connected but it will not pull up browsers. I cleared the registry and deleted kapersky anti-virus before and that worked when I was having the same problem before. Tried it again, but to no avail. My lap top connects perfectly so I know the internet is working. It just seems as if this happened to my desktop overnight... Help would be greatly appreciated! |

Solve : traffic revealer? |
Answer» What software would show details [in English, not digits !] about the TRAFFIC through a connection to the internet that I have not specifically 'requested' ? e.g. soon after booting - that COULD be just security software updating (if so, which ?) or something else that is happening.Packet sniffing software, maybe? For example there is a command LINE app called Ngrep that can DISPLAY and/or log data in and out of a network connection. You have to install a Windows service called Winpcap first. |

Solve : Unable to restore System Backup? |
Answer» My PC has several problems really, It kept bluescreening after startup and shutting down. So I pressed F11 during startup and did the system restore with backup. It reinstalled windows and has all my old files in a backup folder in the C drive. The problem is, it doesnt recognise the graphics card (Geforce 8800 GTX) thats still connected to my pc (and trying to run SETUP on the disc wont WORK, it just keeps crashing before it opens), and the backup/restore program wont let me restore the backup of the C drive it made (it just doesnt show up in the restore menu, browsing to it doesnt help either, I cant select a folder to be restored). It wont even connect to the internet. So at the moment, I have a blank shell of a PC that I cant ACCESS my old files on, cant play any GAMES on, cant access the internet on. Would love some help please. If Windows was re-installed you need to re-install all your Drivers starting with the MBoard Chipset Drivers 1st...How :S Im really not a computer genius, I just play games on them.Did the video card come with a CD? |

Solve : ini.file? |
Answer» I want to know everything about .ini file.... I think this is an extension used for the icons. What icons? Did you click any of the links already provided? I haven't visited the any of the above mentioned links. But I had shared my experience that this extension is mostly used for the icons. Any thing wrong?Only thing wrong is the info is innaccurate...It's used for INITIALIZATION files; configuration files. the Windows API Functions WriteProfileString And ReadProfileString were introduced in windows 3.0 to read/write from the win.ini file. with the introduction of Windows 3.1 MS introduced the WritePrivateProfileString and ReadPrivateProfileString functions, which could write to separate INI files. INI has never been used for icons; the ICO extension has been used for Icons since early versions of windows. Quote I think this is an extension used for the icons. Solve : Windows XP Boot Error Messages? |

Solve : corrupt file? |
Answer» My win32 services file is corrupt. How do I use system recovery to fix problem? I keep getting the message that win 32 needs to shut down. Then I view the details and the message is that this file is corrupt. Would I like to send to MSN? Next time it shows up, I'll copy the full file name. Why don't you just post the entire "exact" message(s)? That way EVERYONE is focused on the "same" problem. |

Solve : Password Protecting? |

Answer» I have tried them. Probably the best one is .zip but I'm looking for something free that's FASTER.Well, good luck on your search. You have been GIVEN a few ideas, and, hopefully, some notion of how to do your own searching. Now the task is in your hands. I have tried them. Probably the best one is .zip but I'm looking for something free that's faster. 7-zip accomplishes half of that. Free, but not necessarily faster, unless you use minimum compression... ...and, on a side note, I made the pr0n assumption as well. I just stayed quiet about it. Given the frequency of people asking similar questions in many PLACES as well as the frequency of (normally) raging male hormones on the net that share the computer they're USING (typically with those that wouldn't approve of their material), it's not exactly an off-the-wall assumption...Quote from: killerb255 on December 15, 2009, 10:33:04 AM Given the frequency of people asking similar questions in many places as well as the frequency of (normally) raging male hormones on the net that share the computer they're using (typically with those that wouldn't approve of their material), it's not exactly an off-the-wall assumption... Of course that is so; however the problem that many of us had was that not that the suggestion of porn hiding as the motivation was inaccurate or silly, rather that it was irrelevant and above all bad manners. If you stick around, you will see that we try to keep up certain standards. Quote from: killerb255 on December 15, 2009, 10:33:04 AM 7-zip accomplishes half of that. Solve : Cant load past the Microsoft loading screen!!? |

Answer» When i turn on the laptop it does its usual load, then hits the chose which mode you want due to a error while updating or WHATEVER, then i will chose a mode, and it flashes blue with something on it for a second then begins to load( With the flag..?) and then repeats When i turn on the laptop it does its usual load, then hits the chose which mode you want due to a error while updating or whatever, then i will chose a mode, and it flashes blue with something on it for a second then begins to load( With the flag..?) and then repeatsNo idea what you are talking about. Instead of "whatever" please provide the entire error message you get and at exactly what POINT you get it.I got rid of 14 of your !'s...Quote from: FairyDust on December 11, 2009, 04:45:39 PM i haven't had any virus pop ups or warnings, but the laptop was turned off by the power button for a while as it took so long to shut down 0. Bad! Bad! Bad! FairyDust... You're... going... to... get... it... That's my preferred method to "corrupt" a file system. 1. Disable Auto Restart. From the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the up/down arrow keys to SELECT the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit Enter. Hopefully the machine will stop on a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Record and post back with the "exact" error message text and/or numbers plus any offending software module it might name. 2. Windows Advanced Options Menu. Use the <F8> function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options menu. Tap the key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST COMPLETES and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar display). 3. Which Laptop? Provide the complete make, model name/number. Or better yet, look for the service tag on the back, bottom, or under the battery. Give us all the information off of that. Service Tag ID would be best for use on Dell website. |
