Solve : Windows XP Personal User Definitions?

Answer»

After entering my password in my user account i got a wierd window that said my hard disk was too full to open with my personal definitions. I clicked ok and my desktop was totaly different. I emptied a bunch of junk off my hardrive and restarted but haven't been able to get back to my regular user account, which has my email, all my INTERNET favorites and access to a server I have. Please help me! Is there any WAY to reset just the personal user definitions in Windows XP?

Thank you! What are you using for virus and spyware protection?AVG... have any ideas? How much free space is on that HDD ? ?

GX is right ALSO this can be caused by malware as well...is that all the protection you currently have ? ?

It could be so much better.I have two HDDs and the C was maxed out. I dumped most everything off of them hoping my user profile WOULD come back...no luck.

I had AVG, SecretMaker, MV RegCleaner, CCleaner...

The user account that opens up now is strange. No modifications I do are saved. I made a new account and that functions fine. I'm looking for a way to revert my account back to how I had it.

Any leads you might have would be great... even any system cleaners that have been effective for you...

Thanks!!
Try these:

Adaware
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html

Spywareblaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Install / update / boot into SAFE Mode (F8 when you boot) and run Adaware & AVG again. Post back.

Solve : microsoft outlook "out of memory" error?

Answer»

Beginning several weeks ago, WHENEVER I try to open a word attachment in microsoft outlook (2000), it says, "Out of memory or system resources. Close some windows or programs and try again." It says this even if nothing else is running. It opens pdf, excel, and jpeg attachments just fine. I've been scouring the web to see if anyone else has ever had this problem and can't find any info. If anyone has any thoughts, they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!**Please** read the post at the top of this page before posting* now then....

please post what system you have etc... how much memory ?Oops, sorry! My computer is a PC laptop I bought in 10/2006: Gateway-Notebook with AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-52-MX6453. 1.60 GHz, 1.87 GB of RAM. My operating system is windows xp. Most of my virtual and physical memory is still free. Thank you so much! Need...more...info...gasp

Antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <>
Can you save the attachment to a folder on your hard drive and then open it directly in Word? Thanks for the responses!

Detect and repair didn't FIX it, and yes I can save in a folder and open it from there. But I get tons of word attachments and it's really inconvenient not to be able to open directly from the e-mail.

I have norton systemworks 2006 with antivirus. I use windows xp 2002 with service pack two. I could always open word attachments fine until around a week and a half ago. I don't recall installing any new programs, although my computer did download some windows automatic updates.

If anyone has any ideas, I would be greatly appreciative! Thanks!!Do you have a Restore Point PRIOR to this happening? If so, try it.Shoot, I disabled Norton GoBack when I first got it because it was making my computer start up too slowly. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!!I meant Windows System Restore. To find it: Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Restore. Thanks! I tried system restore but it said there had been no changes to the system (although it would only let me go back as far as March 7, 2007 and it's possible that the change happened before that). Any other suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

Solve : Lost internet connection on 1 computer?

Answer»

Running windows XP on both. One of the computers connected to the router had access, the other didn't. When charter cable had me bypass the router the other computer did connect. The said the router was bad. I remember there was a way to reset a router? Would I have to enter IP addresses and STUFF because I don't know if I could figure that part out. I hate to go buy a NEW router when I may go wireless in a year or 2. what kind of router?? most have a reset button on the back of them.. when did this start happening? what kind of protections do you have on it?SMC Barricuda, called SMC said they no longer offer customer support on my model....losers. Just started last night, as far as protection do you mean my firewall, Macafee. WHen I reset do I have to unplug power first and then reconnect each ethernet line or VICE versus or do I not need to disconect anything?try unplugging the power to the router and modem and turning off both computers then pressing the reset button for 30 secs or so (if you have one on the router. then plug in the modem et it boot up then plug in the router then restart both computers. what kind of connection to the internet do you have? dail up dsl cable?

do just have Macafee firewall or the complete sercurity suite? You MIGHT not need to reset the router. Just reboot it with the computer still running. Using the resest on the router will CAUSE it to revert to original factory settings and anything you have changed will be lost.

Solve : Reinstalling programs??

Answer»

I recently had to reinstall windows.
everything is working smoothly, exept a few little things.
I have alot of programs already installed and taking up space and most of them refused to work now that windows has been reinstalled. What i want to know, is there any program or command i can use to reinstall a program on this new windows installation?

ThanksNo, you must reinstall the program from Add/Remove Programs or look for an uninstaller that came with the program. You will see it when opening Start/Programs.

Alan <><

BTW - you don't say how big the hard drive is, how much RAM you have and what operating system you've installed. So, you did not format your hard drive and do a fresh installation of Win XP. Is that right?

Anyway, if the programs you had installed prior to reinsalling Windows are not working, you'll need to reinstall them. Surely, you know how to do that, since you must have installed them at one time. Yes? No?Quote from: ale52 on May 07, 2007, 01:05:56 PM

No, you must reinstall the program from Add/Remove Programs or look for an uninstaller that came with the program. You will see it when opening Start/Programs.

Alan <><

Hey Alan, you're saying he would go to Add/Remove Programs to reinstall a program. Right? So, he can't reinstall a program by INSERTING the CD in a CD drive and let auto-run start the installation? Soybean,
"Hey Alan, you're saying he would go to Add/Remove Programs to reinstall a program. Right?" Yes, he could go to A/R Programs to reinstall.

"So, he can't reinstall a program by inserting the CD in a CD drive and let auto-run start the installation?" Yes again.

I was addressing this issue:
"What i want to know, is there any program or command i can use to reinstall a program on this new windows installation?" I MADE the assumption that he had UNINSTALLED some applications because of the "...taking up space..." comment he made.

Alan <>< So, the question remains, "can't he reinstall a program by inserting the CD in a CD drive and let auto-run start the installation?" Thanks guys, I'll just take that as a no then. basicly, i just couldnt be bothered redownloaded 1 gig files for my (free) games, and alot of programs, oh well.

And yes, i can install programs, thanks.Just so you understand the underlying problem here, most programs make changes to Windows Registry during installation. When you reinstall Windows, you need to reinstall the programs again so the registry gets UPDATED, just as it was when you originally installed the programs. Another good reason why a decent imaging program BEATS the heck out of a re-install...

Solve : NTLDR missing please help!?

Answer»

Ok, I have a presario and it is a bit out dated. So I wanted to do a full recovery to set it back to original. On the fifth disc, I had a KERNEL_INPAGE_SITE_ERROR and now when I try to get on there is a NTLDR error. I can get into setup but I don't see anyway to change system cache. Does Anyone have any Idea what is going on or what I should do? I can't even get into windows and there is nothing in setup that seems to help. I have read many feeds but none seem to have the same problem. The funny part is when I called COMPAQ in march they charged me $79 and didnt help at all. A friend actually FIXED it but now it is messed up again and he is out of country. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

I do not have the program in any shape or form (I do not need it as I already have a good photo editing software) so I cannot install the program and then remove it useing normal means, i have read some ware that this should be done through the registry but I am not SURE how to go about it . What protection do you have? When was the last time you did a scan?
Is this program in your Add/Remove Programs list?
Go to Start > Run > msconfig and click on the Startup tab. Is the program listed there?

What's the exact NAME of this program? Does it display the vendor's name? Thanks for you repply, I have done a couple of scans recently but to no avail the program is as far as I know by microsoft, my computer comes up with small windows SAYING that windows is being configured for photo gallery, and unfortunatly it was not listed in msc.DLoad and install a nice little program called Startup CPl by Mike Lin.

It puts a Startup entry inside Control Panel and enables you to change what LOADS at startup.

Very handy. He's been around for some time and written some fine little apps...

Solve : Shutdown ... Execute before shutdown ????

Answer»

Hello, I am looking for a way to process a series of instructions before the Windows 2000 system shuts down. The opposite of the STARTUP feature of the Windows OS which LOADS items in that folder upon boot. Anyone know of any software or tweaks to do this?

I was thinking about relocating the shutdown.exe file, and compile a batch file as shutdown.exe in the place of it, which would run the instructions, then point to the actual shut down command located elsewhere when the instructions are completed....

Haven't done this YET to see if this is the trick that will work or not, but I dont see why it wouldn't...I'm amazed this option doesn't exist in Task MANAGER i just checked my Win2K machine...

Found This handy little ditty THOUGH....

Haven't tried it yet but it may do what you need...

Not sure if multiple tasks can be setup.

Let me know.you just have to include shutdown.exe in a batch file like so

Code: [Select]@echo off

REM code to EG empty recycle bin
REM code to do something else
REM code to do another thing
REM etc
REM Finally...
REM shutdown /? for full usage details

shutdown -s -t 01 -c "Your message here"

Save it somewhere, create a shortcut to the batch, use that instead of the one on the start menu

That just depends what the problem is.
i.e. If the problem is a virus, that might do the trick.

But if it's something to do with hardware, I don't think it will do anything.

Have you tried using Safe Mode and try logging off in that?By the looks of it, it looks like English is not Firestar's first language (If i am wrong, sorry)

Firestar, lets first try system restore. Do you know how to do that?

System restore might be the best option here but i may be wrong...

Huh? I am currently using an XP Home, SP2.
Home and Pro are like Airbus and Boeing. They are exactly the same except for a few functions.Hello Everyone, I appreciate all the suggestions and did try to restore on 7 or 8 different dates and it keeps saying it cannot be restored to those dates. As far as the other things that are suggested to me I have no clue what those things are so I can't do them, I don't even know what service pack is, or those other things, So guess I will just keep turning it on with power button till I get someone here to look at it, It still works and that is the MAIN thing. Solve : Less than a year old laptop is very slow?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition on an Acer Aspire 9410 laptop. I use FireFox and rarely IE.
Processor is Intel Centrino Duo, T2050 @ 1.60GHz
Memory: 1022MB RAM
Used space on C is 17.3GB with 36.3GB free space
Used space on D is 9.53GB with 44.6GB free space
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300
I bought this computer last OCTOBER, by January it was already ridiculously slow taking up to 10 minutes to start up, I couldn't watch any movies or play music, sound and image would freeze constantly. Every one in three times I would start the computer I would get the check disk utility screen. I took my comp back to where I bought it and asked for it to be fixed. It was returned in exactly the same state, apparently they couldnt fix it.
Shortly after that I got the infamous blue screen and my computer crashed and windows wouldn't start up. I had to restore to factory settings. SINCE then I've had no problems whatsoever until last week.
As I was playing a game (which was playing fine for the week before) it started slowing more and more, until today where I can't play any game, watch any movie and my comp freezes from time to time. I started getting the check disk utility at start-up a few times but this seems to have stopped now. It seems as though there is constantly a huge resource sucking program running in the background.
The only threat I've come across recently is winzix but I managed to COMPLETELY remove that in safe mode (I hope! ).
I use AVG anti-virus and spyware, I updated and ran full system scans both haven't showed anything alarming, I've TRIED defragmenting C and used CCleaner. 30 or so issues were found but all were fixed.
This is exactly how the problems started last time...I've lost my faith in the "experts" I took it to last time maybe you guys could help me out??
I would like to know if I'm doing something wrong? Or maybe I didn't get rid of the problem the first time and its back again? And ofcourse..how do I fix this without setting the computer back to factory settings again?

Solve : taskbar freezing?

Answer»

okayy, well i have a windows XP, uuh i use avira antivir as an anti-virus program, and i don't really know too much else about my computer so thisss is the problem :

everytime i turn on my computer, my taskbar freezes. i'll be able to like navigate through the windows using ALT & TAB, but the windows usually freeze, and MSN doesn't let me log in and the clock in the corner won't update

it's not just everytime i turn on the computer, though. sometimes it will just randomly freeze, and whenever it does, it stays like it for over 20 [and usually 30 or 40] minutes

and no, CTRL ALT delete doesn't work.. like i'll press the keys and the task manager will pop up after the rest of the computer isn't frozen anymore [so in like 20/30 minutes]

if i go to the desktop, nothing will open. if i click on internet explorer or my documents nothing will pop up until after the computer is frozen, and MSN and AIM will freeze in the middle of logging in

my anti-virus is up-to-date and scans the computer every day, and i do defrag it like once a week

anyone know how to fix the freezing? any help would be greatly APPRECIATED :]When did this problem start? (What happened prior to the issue)

i've got a windows XP, i don't really know much else about it.. it's not an e-machines tower but it is an e-machines moniter.. i'm not sure if that'll help though

the websites i visit aren't anything that would be harmful to my computer, i do know how to tell if things are viruses and i know not to install crap onto my computer or SAY that i will 'always trust' a company.. i'm usually just on myspace, youtube, xanga, and www.i-am-bored.com hehe but nothing that can be too harmful to my computer

i've just recently [recent meaning like two days ago] got rid of those winantivirus popups, and i was pretty POSITIVE that would stop the freezing but apparently it hasn't

Solve : Control panel problem?

Answer»

Ok, a computer moron is here. Had an OLD computer Windows 95 and was deleting files before giving to my NIECE, and trying to make more disk space for some games for her. Apparently, I dumped something I should not have. When I try to open any item in the control PANEL, I get this message, "Cannot find C:\windows\rundll32.exe." What have I done and is this possible to fix? I can't find the disk that came with the computer when we bought it. Thanks for any and all help.
You could try a search on the computer for rundll32.exe. I just ran a search on my XP system, there are several instances of it, 32.5 Kb size. I looked on my Win 95 system, it is in the Windows folder, 8 kb file.

I can take it off the CD and attach it to an e mail if you like or you could try a search on the internet. I tried a PASTE into this window, didn't work. On the Win95 CD, it is in the Win95 folder and RESIDES in Cab file 17.

Typing it in a search engine gets a lot of hits, so far WinDrivers is the only site that might have a download. Or Travel Here...

Solve : Windows XP Pro. Activation Key, Need Advice. / RESOLVED?

Hi Everyone
I just INSTALLED Windows XP Pro without running in to any problems, but when i
installed the OS and went to Activate Windows it's telling me that product key has already been used. This is the original XP Cd i bought over a year ago and installed it on my other PC. It also has Service Pack 2 installed. I went to Microsoft Website, it's telling me how i can reset or change the product key by going in to the Registry, is this legal?. I was also told that this METHOD wont work with Service Pack 2 ? Does that mean i have to Purchase a nother OS ? Before i go start playing around with things could you please give some advice on what to do. Thank You.It is only licensed for one PC.Maybe if you inform Microsoft about
discontinuing use of XP on the old PC,they will fix you up.

You should probably call them.Listen to Uncle Billy's new elevator

See if the toll free number you need is at the below site.

I tried to install Windows XP home on a second OLDER computer that I have.(the operating system came with my new laptop), but couldn't activate it. I am wondering if they gave you another product key, so that you could activate it, could I still use it on my laptop?( it is currently installed and working well on my laptop.. which is the computer it came with)

Solve : Can't Assign A Drive Letter To Internal Drive?

Answer»

System: Dell XPS 400 running XP Media Center, 2.8GHz Duo-Core, 2GB Ram, Nvidia 7800GTX, 250GB SATA Primary HD, 500GB SATA Secondary HD.

My Problem: I did a clean install of the OS. Before doing so, I moved a bunch of files from my primary HD to my secondary HD and then physically removed the secondary HD from the computer. After the OS installation was complete, I reinstalled the secondary HD. The HD is recognized in the BIOS and it shows up in disk manager, however, windows will not assign it a DRIVE letter which means I can't access the drive. When I right click the drive in disk manager, the option to change the drive letter is grayed out. I have spent several hours on the phone with Dell support technicians and they were not able to solve my problem. Does anyone have any ideas how I can get a drive letter assigned to the drive, short of reformatting it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am at wits end with this.

The drive in question is a Seagate 500 GB Internal SATA Barracuda 7200.9.

BTW, I ran the Seagate TROUBLESHOOTING tools and no problems were identified with the drive. I'm quite sure this is a software problem.

Thanks for your help!Does it already have its own letter?
Have you tried changing the drive jumpers?
What drive are you booting from? The recently formatted one, or the backup one? It does not have its own drive letter. (The drive shows up in the Disk Management tool, but not in explorer.)

The drive jumpers have been changed and all of the CABLES have also been checked. There is no need to apply master/slave order as these are SATA drives.

The drive I am booting off of is the recently formatted y 250GB drive. The drive in question is the 500GB Seagate.

I am fairly convinced this is a software issue as numerous hardware integrity tests have indicated the drive functions properly. Also, I should mention the drive worked fine before the reinstall of XP.

Any advice would be very appreciated.Have you tried Add/Remove Hardware? When you look at the drive in disk manager how big of a drive does it show? How many gigs.

The reason you are getting this is because the tools for this drive for your operating system to see a 500 GIG drive is not loaded. Disk manger knows you have a drive there but can't read the drive without the tools so it doesn't give a drive letter.

I would GO to segates web site and look for the drive tools.

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/

Were the SATA drivers re-installed after the clean install of Windows ? ?

If you right clik it in Disk Management and select Properties what is reported ? ?

Check INSIDE the case to see how dirty it is. Use a can of compressed air to clean all fans and heatsinks etc.

To test the RAM DLoad and run MemTest...let it run a few hours...

Solve : MS Outlook - can't delete or move old emails?

Answer»

I have thousands of old emails in MS Outlook, 2003 version. When I try to delete most of them (ranging from 2-6 years old) I get this message:

"The MESSAGING interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists RESTART Outlook."

The problem has persisted for around a year - since I started trying to clear out old junk. Restarting Outlook makes no DIFFERENCE. Some of these emails were brought in from other computers when I got a new computer and moved my whole personal folders file, some are newer than that. They are in a variety of folders, not just in my inbox. If I try to move such a non-deletable emails, I get a message saying "Can't move the items."

Does anyone KNOW how I can get past this and delete old emails?

Solve : memory stick (usb) is not read by pc?

Answer»

I am runing XP media center in a HP pc. and when I plug a usb memory stick, is not found. What is going on?

Any help is appreciated.Well we're going to need some information, like what brand is the memory stick?Usb 1.0, 1.1 or 2.0 ports? Has it ever worked? If you go My computer, then properties, then hardware, and then to device manager are there any question marks or exclamation marks next to anything? Have you tried the memory stick in ANOTHER computer? Also, does your computer have sp2 installed?

-MikeIs it seen on other MACHINES ? ?
Is there any data on it ? ?
Have you tried powering down, re-booting without it and then power down again and plug it in...This usually WORKS.

If not go into Control Panel and find the listings of all your USB roots and hubs...right click each one of them and select remove. You will get a WARNING ...ignore it.

Then re-boot and Windows will automatically re-install your USB drivers.

p.s. is this plugged into the front of the machine ? ?If so do any other devices work in there ? ?the memory stick is LG and it works in other computers. so I will do what Patio suggests and let you know.

Thanks for the replies
look at the drivers in the device manager

start right click my computer properties hardware decive manager

and tell us if you see a yellow ? or red X

that happened to my moms computer and wouldnt read USB memory drivesMy question is: are other USB devices (drives specifically) recognized on this computer? It could be that you just need to download some drivers. "LG" doesn't tell us a whole lot...do you have the model number by any chance? All I can find on the stick is the brand. It is 1 Gb USB Drive. I checked the device manager and click on every USB Hub, drive, etc., and all of them say that that device is working fine. I plugged the memory stick and checked the manager, It recognizes the device, but still I can't open it or do anything with it. I clicked on that icon at the bottom bar to unpluged. Then before I umplagued ther is a yellow circlo with the exclamation sign nexto to the device in the device manager. I unplugged when I was told I could do so.

Still I can't open it in this computer. I use other ones at HOME and I don't have problems there.

ThanksWhat was the results of my suggestions ? ?
Still the same ?

If so copy any data on there that you need and then re-boot with the stick in....
Right click My Computer and select Manage. Then choose disk management, find the stick, right clik it and select format...this will wipe any data but should get your machine to now recognise it.

Solve : Windows operating systems?

Answer»

I have WINDOWS XP operating system, I bought a harddrive used and I keep getting a message that says I don't have a genuine copy of the windows XP. I keep getting this message.
I have a copy of Windows ME that is genuine. My question is, Can I install the windows ME version over the XP version and if I can will it delete all the information that I have saved on my computer? What you'll have to do is format the drive, which will get rid of all data so make sure you get all that you want first. Then install Windows ME. What happens is Windows won't allow you to install an older version of Windows if a newer version is present.Easiest way to prepare that drive for ME if you have a floppy drive is to DLoad a WINME bootdisk from bootdisk.com.
Double click the DLoaded file with a fresh floppy in the drive and it will create the bootdisk.
Re-boot and at the A: prompt type in format C: /U and hit Enter.
When it finishes, remove the floppy, put in your ME CD and re-boot...
The install should start immediately.

p.s. Because it is a used HDD i would also DLoad the manuf. diagnostic UTILITIES for that drive free from the manuf. WEBSITE and run them...

You wouldn't want to go thru all this only to find the drive has problems...

Good Luck...let us know.

Solve : HP DeskWriter 600 - will it work with Windows??

Answer»

Hi All –

I’m trying to get an HP DeskWriter 600 printer to work on my old WINDOWS ME system. The driver I got with it is for MAC computers. (the website also has only Mac drivers) When I click on the floppy drive in My Computer it gives a “This disk has not been formatted” message, and asks if I want to format it. (I haven’t tried formatting it) I’m assuming that this is because it is Mac software. Is there a way to make it work with Windows?

Thanks for any help you can provide! Its possible that windows has a BUILT in driver for it. Double click "printers" in control panel. Double click "add printer". Make selections.Well I went and had a look on the HP website and there are only Mac drivers for the printer . MAYBE SOMEONE else can find something better.

Solve : Move Quick Launch From Right Side To Left Side Of Taskbar?

Answer»

After I reinstalled Windows XP Home on a P4 2.4 G computer and checked Quick Launch in Taskbar & Start Menu PROPERTIES, I double clicked the Quick Launch divider in error, and Quick Launch displayed on the second row of the Taskbar. I was finally able to get Quick Launch on a single row of the Taskbar. However, it is now on the right side of the Taskbar, and I have not been able to MOVE it to the traditional left side. While it does not CREATE an operational problem, I am accustomed to Quick Launch being on the left. Quick Launch is not locked. How can I get it BACK to the left side of the Taskbar, with open programs SHOWING on the right?Click and drag the divider, that should move the toolbar about.
Just drag it to its normal position.
It works for me, anyway.
Hope this helps.Well - that was a rather simple solution. Thanks. You're welcome, glad I was able to help.

Solve : my pc has crashed or something. it wont turn on?

Answer»

im sorry that I cant give more specifics about my PC, but it is a gateway pentium 4 with windows xp.

I was on it a few days ago and it suddenly did what looked like restarting, but then it just stayed in limbo sending no info to the screen and i COULD hear the fan running. I was able to get the cd tray to open and close but thats about it. the power button was doing nothing.
so as a last resort, i pulled the power chord from the back. when i plugged it back in, it went straight back into the limbo state with the fan running and no signal to the screen. I unplugged and re-plugged everything from the tower and replaced them but ended up in the same limbo state. i am currently at a loss of how to remidy this.
Would the best option be to bring it to a repair shop?
thank you so much for any help. I have a lot of files that i would hate to loose.

-SaraIt's hard to diagnose without more info but if it still isn't starting you're first objective should be trying to save your data...the more you try right now to get it started the more harm you could be doing to your files.

If you are familiar with removing/installing hardware then power down the machine and remove the HDD.

You will want to hook it up to a known working machine as a slave DRIVE to see if you can retrieve the data...

After this post back with any other info on the machine and what happened prior to this and hopefully we can assist at getting you back up and running.to be honest, i would have no idea how to do that.
do you think bringing it to a repair shop could cause more problems than its worth?May be something as simple as a new power supply. If you are not comfortable working on this, I understand, and a local computer shop may be a great idea. I would be reluctant to bin a Pentium 4 with a legal copy of Windows. You may also just want to talk among your friends and colleagues to see if there is someone with a bit of computer savvy...it's not as complicated a procedure as it SOUNDS but the person should have a well rounded background...ok, a friend of mine who is fairly smart with these things is going to take a look at it in a few days. ill report back after.Best of Luck to you...oy. how odd
i took the pc to my friend and for whatever reason, everything worked for him and has been working since.
i am backing up all of my files now, but thank you for all of your advice. This would be a great time to consider getting an imaging program that will make a restorable image of your complete hard drive...i use Acronis True Image.

Coming that close to losing everything has a tendency to make ONE REALISE good backups are very valuable indeed...Quote from: sararoseb on May 14, 2007, 05:08:59 PM

Solve : Wireless internet connection shortcut missing?

Answer»

Hi guys!
My brother has got a slight problem, the shortcut for the wireless intenet is missing.
It should appear next to the clock in the lower right corner but it is not there, and it is also missing from the control panel--->network CONNECTIONS... so he cant connect to our wireless network..
Anyone know how to fix this prob?
Thanx

The network connections window looks like this

Check your DEVICE manager and see if it finds it. (right click My Computer -> Manage)
If it's disabled, enable it. If it has problems, let us know. If it's not even there, let us know.
We'll need more information about your pc as well. (CPU, RAM, HDD space, OS, brand, etc.)thanx for the reply..
i checked it on my computer, there ot was but it was not even there on my brothers (the one with the problem)
So what can i do?
It is a new hp laptop, xp sp2, amd turion x2, 1.6 ghz, 1gb ram, 100 gb hd.. yeah what more is there to SAY...Is it internal wireless? If there is a WAY to turn the wireless off via a HARDWARE switch or button, turn it off and then back on a few seconds later (while windows is running). It should recognize the hardware change and make the necessary system changes.
it have not got a on/off button, so we pulled out the power plug and but it back on, so it basicly was like a on/off button, but nothing happend.. Just right click on the icon in the Network setting window(the icon in the window in ur pic) and choose properties. Then tick this box

Look for a small button somewhere on the edge of the front or sides of the laptop. Newer models have built-in wireless and it can be disabled/enabled with that button.

Alan <>< In fact there will be a button, somewhere. It's there so you can switch it off when running on battery only, so the battery lasts longer.

It could be a slider, or a button, or something...but it will be there.it has got the button you mentioned, but nothing happends when i swith it on/off...

And the image, where the box was to be checked, i did it, nuthin happened
Really confused...does anybody know any solution?? Plz!!!What happened when you switched the wireless off? Did Windows make a disconnect sound? Watch the device manager for any changes when you switch it off and see if an extra network connection loads up.
Let us know exactly what happens.

Solve : Mouse not detected.?

Answer»

XP Home SP.2 Intel PIIIE 1gb 256 Ram Mobo Epox EP.3SPA 160G hdd.

Had lots of 'file corrupt' MESSAGES which turned out to be caused by a ram stick going down (Memtest86 showed this). Decided that it was time for a clear out so reformatted drive & reinstalled XP Home.

Since the clear out no PS.2 mouse is detected (tried four which known to be good). Any serial mouse is detected and no other problems. With a PS.2 mouse installed Device Manager shows no pointing device at all. The serial mouse only is shown EVEN if both PS.2 and Serial are connected, and of course the serial mouse when on its own is shown.

The XP disk is genuine from MS as is the SP.2 disk and I have successfully installed XP Home from this disk on this hardware on more than ONE occasion without problems. No errors are displayed on bootup or at any other time.

Appreciate any guidance with the problem.

ThanksTwo things come to mind:

1. the mouse port has taken a dump "(tried four which known to be good)" or the port somehow got disabled in the BIOS.

Alan <>< Did you by any chance unplug your ps2 mouse while the computer was still running recently? Or maybe it came loose?
I haven't experienced it myself, but I've heard that if you unplug a ps2 mouse with the computer on, it has about a 1 in 4 chance of blowing some fuse on the motherboard. Thanks for the replies. Now find I have also LOST both usb ports so some trauma has occurred on the mobo... Can't think of anything which would have caused it.

Solve : PCI Express x16 One?

Answer»

what is a PCI Express x16 MEAN...ThanksPCI Express, officially abbreviated as PCIe (and sometimes confused with PCI Extended, which is officially abbreviated as PCI-X), is a computer expansion card interface format. It was designed as a much faster interface to replace PCI, PCI-X, and AGP interfaces for computer expansion cards and graphics cards. The PCI Express (PCIe) physical connection (slot) is completely different from those of the older standard PCI slots or those for PCI Extended (PCI-X).

PCIe is based AROUND serial links called lanes. With PCIe 1.1 (currently the most common version) each lane carries 250 MB/s in each direction. The connection between card and motherboard consists of between one and 32 lanes giving a maximum transfer rate of 8 GB/s in each direction. Lane counts are generally referred to with an x prefix so for example x16 is shorthand for 16 lane. To put the speed into perspective, a single lane has nearly twice the data rate of normal PCI, a four lane slot has a comparable data rate to the FASTEST version of PCI-X 1.0, and an eight lane slot has a data rate comparable to the fastest version of AGP.

PCIe slots come in a variety of sizes referred to by the maximum lane count they support. A larger card will not FIT in a smaller slot but a smaller card can be used in a larger slot. The NUMBER of lanes actually connected may be smaller than the number supported by the slot size. While a 16 lane card cannot be used in an 8 lane slot it can be used in a 16 lane slot with only 8 lanes connected.

ERROR is "The Memory Could not be "READ""

wat i doCould you be a little more DESCRIPTIVE?
What are you trying to copy? From where, to where?
Also, give SPECS of your COMPUTER. (CPU, RAM, HDD)
Am I right to assume that you have Windows NT? Winnt is a folder for a few different windows versions.
