Solve : Slipstreaming xp sp2?

Answer»

Used autostreamer to slipstream sp2 with xp home.
I find the program very intuitive and easy to use.
Am getting stuck however in burning the iso FILE to CD. Used Nero express 6.
The resultant iso file is approx 720 mb and program doesn't permit it to burn as CD CAPACITY is 700 mb.
What am I doing wrong?
A quick check reveals that i386 folder is 466 mb and sp2( I used the sp2 cd) is 266 mb: so the resultant file will always be more than the capacity of a CD.
How do I resolve this?
Thanks.
vkr15Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 into a bootable XP disk.

Locate and download from Microsoft.com, when available, the administrative install version of Windows XP Service Pack 2, yes the whole 266.01 megs. Let's just assume that the downloaded SP2 file name will be XPSP2.exe. You might also wish to locate a program called cdimage.exe, about 108k. It's available on the web and places like: unattended.msfn.org. Look in the "Using...CDImage TOOL to create the ISO" section. It's also on many other "windows enthusiast" or "freak" sites. You will also need to download or extract the 2048 byte XP boot loader from your CD. Some may call it the "boot sector," but for the record, it's 4 x 512 byte sectors making it 2048 bytes. Isobuster will extract the boot loader from your CD. Also be aware that all WINtel X86 computers start executing code at location 07C0h.

Now, the PROCEDURE!
1.) Make a subdirectory on your hard drive and call it XP-SP2.
2.) Copy the contents of your XP disk into that subdirectory, write down your Volume Label.
3.) If XPSP2.exe is in your root directory (C:\), make an administrative (network) install of the service pack by typing:"XPSP2.exe /integrate:C:\XP-SP2\" either from a command prompt or using start->run in Windows.

This one command expands the service pack to a temporary directory and updates the contents of the C:\XP-SP2 subdirectory to SP2. Believe it or not it’s really done now and it's just a matter of simply making a bootable CD with the files from C:\XP-SP2\ . "Locate and download from Microsoft.com, when available, the administrative install version of Windows XP Service Pack 2, yes the whole 266.01 megs."
I have all of this on a SP 2 CD and yes it is 266 mb.
I have no problems upto creating the iso file with Autostreamer; but just can't burn this as Nero informs that its more than the capacity of the CD.

I have more than 700 MB of files, and they won't fit on a single CD. What do I do?

The original version of Windows XP slipstreamed with Service Pack 2 should be well under the 700-MB limit, and should fit on any standard CD-R. However, if you've ended up with more than 700 MB of files, then, obviously, they won't fit. This can happen if you're slipstreaming a CD that has been customized by your PC manufacturer (for instance, to include extra drivers), or if you've included too many third-party drivers yourself.

If this happens to you, you have a few choices. First, if you have a DVD burner, you can write the files to a DVD. If you don't, you can try deleting some of the unnecessary files (such as the VALUEADD, SUPPORT, cmpnents, WIN9XMIG, WIN9XUPG, and WINNTUPG folders) files in the hopes of reducing the size of the installation. Lastly, you can start over and try the process again.

Note: The aforementioned WIN9XMIG, WIN9XUPG, and WINNTUPG folders are used to upgrade from Win9x and WinNT/2000. If you're only installing over Windows XP (or installing on an empty system), you probably can safely delete these folders.

Hi Contrex,
I appreciate your patience in guiding me and thank you very much for the same. Yes indeed I have OEM disc and I can safely delete those folders you've mentioned. But i386 is a must for making a bootable CD which itself is 446 mb. Add to this 266 mb of sp2 and you've got over 700 mb.
But this statement:-

The original version of Windows XP slipstreamed with Service Pack 2 should be well under the 700-MB limit, and should fit on any standard CD-R.

is intriguing.
Thanks for those links--I'll read them and see if there is a workaround.

Either you are doing something wrong or your Windows install disk is an odd one.

The 266 Mb SP2 files are not added to the 446 Mb i386.

The slipstreaming process is intended to use files from the SP2 update to replace some of the older files in the i386 folder.

Then SP2 can be discarded.

It does not appear on the final disk. Thanks for the clarification.

Solve : Access Denied to Old Files?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home Edition. My mother has run System Restore on it several times in an effort to speed it up. Last time, however, she did it before I could copy my files onto floppy DISKS. My account was password-protected at ONE POINT (though it wasn't when she ran System Restore) and it is entirely possible that I protected my files in some way. Now I can't open any of the files from my old account. When I try, I get an ERROR message that says the account is not accessible and access is denied. I've tried all I can think of to get them. Can ANYONE help?

Do you have a shiny Windows CD? If you do set the computer thru the BIOS to boot to the cdrom drive & with the CD in choose to do a restore of the OS. You won't lose any data as it will reinstall the operating system only.

I don't see too many other options other than pulling the drive, slaving it to another computer, coping the data and do a clean install.

Solve : Application popup: Explorer.EXE - Application Error?

Answer»

HELP!! I hope somebody can help me with this. I have posted this on Windowsforum.org and CNET Forums and have not had any luck.

I get the following error several times a day. Normally when opening a folder or launching an application from the Quick Lauch Toolbar or double-clicking on an item in a folder to open it.

Application popup: Explorer.EXE - Application Error : The instruction at "0x0145b190" referenced memory at "0x0145b190". The memory could not be "read".

The options are OK and DEBUG. When I click on DEBUG it doesn't do anything and after clicking OK, explorer shuts down and restarts.

The following text is from Event Viewer and when I click on the link it is very generic info that says the driver needs to be reinstalled. I don't know how to reinstall Explorer.exe if that is the right thing to do.

Will be happy to provide any other information that will be helpful.

Thank you.
What did the other forums already advise you to do?
If you have your windows xp cd, restart your computer and boot from the cd. After a few prompts, you'll WANT to choose to repair windows. There are two different repair options, one is a manual repair and the other is automatic. If you get the wrong one, start over.
Back up your data before you do this, just in case something goes wrong. (probably won't go wrong)
What antivirus protection did you have installed prior to the issue?
Is it possible for you to run a full scan?

If this is not a virus, it could be a problem with your memory

Download and burn http://www.memtest86.com/
(Thats the only memory tester I know of, thanks goes to GX1_Man, if anyone knows of a better, please post!)

If you are skilled at NAVIGATING your BIOS, disable the quick diagnostics.
(Tell us what beep codes you get)
Thank you both for your suggestions. I have been working on both and will try to address question you both have.

First, the other forums have not yet provided any response or suggestions that is why I am so appreciative of your response.

I am running McAfee anti-virus software and I have run a full scan WITHOUT finding any problems. I keep my definitions up to date and have SCHEDULED scans so I am comfortable there, but, just to be sure, I MANUALLY checked for updates and did a full scan without discovering any major issues and had the problem after doing that.

Then I downloaded the memory test software and ran it. There were no errors.

Finally, I booted from my Windows XP CD and chose 'R' for repair. After that it brought me to a DOS prompt and with the message Type 'Exit' to return to Windows or something like that. I have no idea what to do at that point to repair Explorer. Can you provide a suggestion?

Once again, thank you for your help.well you protections are limited look at my signatureIf you get a dos-like prompt for the recovery option, you chose the wrong one. There's another recovery option that is automatic. Give it another try.

1. Use System Restore to go back to sometime earlier in the week. Your files won't be deleted, but you may need to reinstall some programs that have been installed recently.

2. Download CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar) and clean out your temp files and registry (be sure to backup). Then download AVG Free, update it, and scan in Safe Mode.Go to Start/Run and type in the following exactly and hit Enter....reboot and see if it behaves now...

regsvr32 /i shell32.dllthanx for the help, it works fine now i just USED System Restore and went back to last week and all is working.

As I said in my first post, I did this with no effect.I'm pleased to announce SUCCESS!!

I found out the file that connects one to Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel is called ACCWIZ.CPL, and is LOCATED in C:\winnt\system32. Mine was apparently corrupt.

I found the file on my Installation disk, expanded it, and put it in place of the corrupt one. Now, everything WORKS fine.

Thanks for everyone's suggestionsNicely done...glad to hear your all fixed up.

With errant SYSTEM files sometimes it can be corrected by running sfc /scannow from a COMMAND prompt as well...

Solve : Listening to the radio through the computer?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

My computer is about seven years old with Windows 98. I listen to BBC radio programmes through the computer, from England. Live programmes are fine, but "Listen Again" programmes crash down to about zero KBPS and then build up to somnething in the 20 KBPS. I get about a minute of radio and then it recharges over and over.

I have 8mb and my provider cannot suggest why I have this problem. Currently I access the internet through a fiber/lan with a Scientific Atlanta modem Model EPX2203 series.

In the apartment block where I live I have the option to additionally access through a CAT 5 copper cable. Will this help?

I KNOW nothing about computers. I wonder if I should get a new computer? Or is it the modem? Or is it the internet provider, that is if I am a long DISTANCE from the exchange? The internet provider will not tell me, but I do live in a city.

Any advice will be greatfully received. Thank you.If you are on a dialup service this unfortunately can be a common occurance...Hi Patio,

Thank you for your reply.

I realize that this must be elementary to most contributers but is there an alternative to " dial up" or is it purely an hit or miss solution to my problem.

As a new contributer to this site, I lost my first posting, last night, and so because of tiredness I did a precis posting. But does " dial up" mean one computer " speaking " to another computer. whether, as was the case at my last HOME, access was down the telephone line but now that I have moved house . to a city, here in Sweden, I have access down a cable...standard in the appartment block where I live. But , I also paid for an extra option , a Cat 5 copper cable, not accessed yet...just moved in.

Is there something different from " dialup" . What I cannot understand is that my daughter, same Swedish City, does not have this problem..but she has a different provider and the appartment complex has recently negotiated a "deal" for 100 MB access for each contributer.
Anyway, thanks again.Click Here for a short list of providers in your country...Also contact your current supplier for more info on what speed you have etc. and info regarding other packages.
Hope this helps.Hi Patio,

Thank you again. Very useful. Also I am studying the " Dictionary" on this site and beginning to get an understanding of some of the terms relevant to my quetion.

Were you able to find out what type of connection you currently have ? ?Hi Patio,

Sorry, late reply. Been away.

Actually, the radio is working now. It may be because I went down to the office and spoke to the provider.

I suggested that he move me to a seperate Cat 5 cable ( which will give me ,the one and only opportunity , leaving the national telephone COMPANY aside for the moment, to actually change to another provider)

which he said he would do, but did not, ........ and " HEY PRESTO", the radio improved...so I have left things as they are.

To answer your question, it seems to me, that the Company supplying my home, part of a block of flats, goes to another Company here in Sweden for that access. When I looked up..using the information you provided..my suppliers name was not there. So I have made that assumption...and also because of a readable article on "Next generation broadband" in an English magazine. My supplier uses a cable....fibreglass, I think, and down that line comes internet connection television and telephone. It is currently imposssible to change television provider, telephone you can, internet provider you cannot UNLESS an owner has bought in to these new flats, a Cat 5 connection ie a copper cable run and then you can shop around.

Which is why I am thinking...why has my radio improved suddenly. So I do not think I will push for my Cat 5 line to be activated...and in any case, I think I have read somwhere that copper cable is becoming " old hat" so while the radio is working maybe fibre access is better.

Thanks again. AJS Quote from: ajs on May 08, 2007, 06:19:07 AM

I am on fibre optical cable service here in the UK. It is not unknown that local problems occur. You telephone the company, they check out the local equipment in your area, an adjustment is made and your service gets better.
Once again the squeaky wheel gets the grease...glad to hear things have improved.

Has this BIOS ever been flashed ? ?

This is not what i am suggesting...just asking.Quote from: DellCA on May 08, 2007, 10:40:03 AM

Hello,

My name is Richard; I work for the Dell Online Community Outreach group. I wanted to comment on the issue you are experiencing. If the screen appears to be shrinking you can try to use the FN+F7 key combination function. This spreads the entire picture to the edges of the LCD display.

You mentioned that the hard drive came up with errors during the Dell diagnostics. This is a clear indication that the drive is bad or going bad, thus it is no longer reliable. The drive should be replaced before you reinstall Windows back on the system.

I hope that I have assisted you a little. Good luck!

...Brave man.

I never go into forums that have anything to do with my work and suggest things, it will only bite you in the *censored*...

*Waits for biting to begin...*If by "flash the BIOS" you mean have I pulled down my pants and, well,..... No, I haven't. Do you think it might help? It would certainly clearly express my feelings about working with windows. (I also can't get my USB mouse to work, but at least the touchpad does. OOOPS, a tangent there.) If you meant something else by "flash the BIOS" I do not know what you mean. I just thought that Richard's comment my be referring to, well, you understand. No it's probably a good thing you haven't done it. There are many examples of people who have done this and reduced their machine to a doorstop. Best to leave it be as is.

An incomplete page as you describe it may be perfectly normal....not every page is a full page depending on the BIOS version....

Please clarify for us here though...since replacing the HDD are you saying you were able to re-install Windows and your games and the troubles have gone away ? ?Yes Patio, the Windows Me is REINSTALLED, everything appears to mbe running fine. I guess I need a lost Logitech disk to reinstall the ancient WIRELESS mouse but everything else seems good. The problem with the BIOS isn't that there is only the first page, or that it is both wrong and incomplete, or that you cannot maneuver on it at all, or that you cannot change pages or even escape that deeply flawed page without manually shutting down; the problem is that with the new HD all this is happening and even with my old bad drive (on which nothing else worked right) the BIOS worked fine, and it is a six pager. I do not understand why I am having this BIOS malfunction? Every thing is the same except for the new carbon-neutral, eco-friendly p.c. HD.No matter what hardware you add to a machine it should never affect the BIOS period.

If it is running fine i wouldn't worry.

But in the meantime grab a CMOS battery for that machine part # CR2032 about the size of a dime on the MBoard and replace it.

Any issues with the machine not keeping the correct time ? ?No issues apart from my inability to reset the time, at least in the BIOS. The time itself appears to be correct and as it is a 12 hour clock it makes little difference. It is the date that is off.

What is a CMOS battery and what do I do with it? I hope this has nothing to do with the flashing mentioned earlier.

I know that the hardware upgrade/fix should not have effected the BIOS which is why it bothers me. It has nothing to do with a BIOS flash...it's a SMALL 3V battery that keeps the BIOS info stored in the ROM viable when the power is off...

Easy enough to replace and if you cannot set the time and get it to stay this is an indication the battery needs replaced.Looks kinda like this on your Motherboard...if you're wary of attempting it yourself enlist a friend who is familiar with it...takes about 2 minutes.

Thank you very much Patio. This will be my next replacement part. I'll let you know what happens. I forgot to mention...when working inside the case make sure all power sources are removed and take the neccessary anti-static precautions.Quote from: patio on May 10, 2007, 12:19:59 PM

Solve : Windows XP will not boot under any circumstances.?

Answer»

Again, hello

My new system is still giving me problems I'm progressing THOUGH

I installed a HDD that was being used in my bro's old computer, it worked perfectly in his, and I just did the transfer about a week ago. Upon boot up, It will give me choices of whether I want to boot in Safe Mode, Normaly, and yahda yahda yahda. Nothing will work! When I choose an option the bootup will just go in a big loop and bring me back to the same options. So I tried a Very old HDD that was laying around with Windows ME on it, it got PAST the initial boot up.

I've tried booting it up on the Win XP CD but to no Avail, after the CD is done CHECKING my system settings, and I get to choose "repair windows" and so on, my machine will randomly SHUT down.

I'm out of ideas.

What it could be:

Hardware issue
Incompatibility

Under normal circumstances you usually cannot just swap a HDD with XP installed on it from one machine to the next and expect it to boot up unless the machines are almost identical. I'd say you got lucky.

Whenever he CLICKS on a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet, or even on an e-mail message, everything on the page immediately highlights. How can we QUICKLY beat this into submission?we need more details.

is it personel computer or company?

what happened before this started? any software changes? There have been no software changes. It is a company computer. We are a small, non-profit agency, and there are 8 desktop computers linked to our server. This is the only terminal that is having this problem.what protections do you have?? and what office SUITE is it? MS office 03, 07 what??The version of Word is Word 2002. The network is protected by Norton. I understand that the firewall, and antivirus is all through the server, and is all norton. I'm not finding antivirus or firewall protection on the desktop computer itself. (Believe me, not my idea.). Okay, I have no clue how or why this situation resolved itself, but for now all seems to be right with the world. (Must have waved the correct dead chicken over the terminal or something.) Thanks for your help and good thoughts...lol did you just RESTART the computer or whata? so if anyone else has this problem we have a referenceQuote from: unlovedwarrior on May 08, 2007, 03:38:33 PM

lol did you just restart the computer or whata? so if anyone else has this problem we have a reference
If the problem occurs again, first turn off the computer
Unplug the mouse and keyboard
and plug them back in
and start again

This tends to solve the issue (as Unloved Warrior suggested. Sometimes Windows "trips" over and has problems)
I'm willing to bet that your boss' Ctrl key got stuck somehow. Hold down your Ctrl key and click on some text... Look familiar?

That's the disk you need.

Disconnect network cable or modem. Insert the CD, go into the BIOS and set the PC to boot from CD ROM, reboot machine, choose new install, wait until it is DONE. PROCURE Service Pack 2 and install it before connecting to Internet to avoid trojans.

Solve : Auslogics Disk Defragmenter and Windows Disk Defragmenter?

Answer»

I recently downloaded Auslogics Disk Defragmenter, and came up with the following question:

How is it faster than Windows Defragmenter if it uses the same defragmenting ENGINE as Windows Defragmenter does?
?
EDIT: And does anyone know the command line options?

Thanks! It's more fun, maybe it seems faster.Quote from: street1 on May 08, 2007, 05:49:18 PM

It's more fun, maybe it seems faster.
It certainly is faster
(Thats why I am using it right now)
But if you defragment using it, and re-defragment, it takes a while to do it againYeah,I didn't get why the 're-defragmentation<---lol
took so long. So, it's faster than Windows Defragmenter the first time you use it but not necessarily so for subsequent defragmentation, right? That does seem odd.It is odd the re-defragmenting of the ORIGINAL deframenting
is slow.Wonder why?

Still keeping it though.Zylstra found me a new toy to use.LOLWell
Try this:
Run Windows Defragmenter (in XP)
Wait for it to completely finish
and restart it again

It takes FOREVER!

(This does not happen in older versions of Windows, like 98)My hard drive is partitioned. My OS partition (Win XP) will defrag with Windows Defragmenter is less than 3 minutes if the last defragmentation was, oh, maybe 2 or 3 WEEKS ago, and I haven't installed or uninstalled programs to that partition. My Docusments FOLDER is on a different partition; I do not save data files on the OS partition; it's just for Windows and programs.

Doing a repeat defragmentation immediately after a normal defragmentation runs quicker for me, not SLOWER. Likewise, none of my other partitions normally take more than a few minutes to defrag. Well,I have found XP to be a happy camper when
it is fragmented.

Xp likes to be confused.

The excel file have to be in root directory.
How to setup the file permission in WINDOW XP to prevent USER delete/rename the excel file but user can access the file?
Any suggestion?

Thanks & kindest regards
Charlena
You are going to have to give us a little bit more information on what exactly it is that you are trying to do

Try this:
Put it in its own folder
And RIGHT click that folder, and click the option that says "Sharing"

The options that you are looking for should be in thereDear Sir,

Sorry for the insufficient information provided.
Please see attachment for details. Thanks.

[cleaning up - attachment DELETED by admin]Under
"Groups and Users"
Click the one that is titled "Users"
You will then see the security permissions for that user group

If they NEED to be able to open and run the file, select Allow:"Read and Execute"
If they need to be able to only need to be able to view it, select Allow:"Read"

If you dont want them to be able to do anything, click the "Deny" box for "Full Control"Thank you for your guidance
They need to read and run the file, so select Allow "Read and Execute". But they able to delete/rename the file. Anything wrong with the setting? How to set the permission that they cannot delete/rename the file? See attachment

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]Have you tried logging out of the administration account, and logging in again as a regular non-admin user?
Since all you are controlling is the regular users (I presume) being logged in as the administrator will not apply these settings

Solve : Reinstallation of Dell Inpiron 1100?

Answer»

Hi there,

I am going to reinstall my Dell Laptop, but I know that during settup you have to type some codes. And I don't know these.

So my question is that if someone knows how to reinstall a Dell Inpiron 1100 laptop to please help me out on this.

My system in not working properly and I tried different things already but they didn't work, so I'm going to have to reinstall Windows XP. I tried system restore, driver roll back, with Norton SystemWorks.

I have no other option unless there is a button I can press on my Laptop to restore it to factory settings.

I'm a newbee at computers so I don't know anything about solving computerproblems.

Help me out on this!

AndrewHi Andrew...

I don't have much (any) experience with laptops, but i'm assuming its the same deal as desktops.

firstly, what specifically is it thats wrong with it thats making it not work properly? maybe someone here could help with that...

If you really want to reinstall then back up any data you need/want.

when starting the machine up, enter the BIOS (usually by pressing the Del key or F1... it will tell you on the screen how to enter) and change the boot sequence to boot from the CD ROM first. Save & exit.

then put in the Windows CD and upon restarting it will ask you if you wish to boot from CD... press any key here and it should start, all you need to do is follow the on screen instructions...

Also, probably best to format the DRIVE if you are going down this route.
but please remember and back up any important data

Do you have a real Windows CD or a Dell reinstall CD? WHat does it say on there?

The boot order in BIOS is ESSENTIAL. CD must be before hard drive.

Anything you need to type in will be on the Windows COA sticker on the laptop. It is a 25 DIGIT code.Okee,

I'll try to describe what's wrong now with my laptop.

I had a problem with the C-drive, I was running out of diskspace. And my D-drive was not being used.
The C-drive has a total size of 9.76 GB now I only have 4.49 GB ;54% of diskspace left. It was 1.2 GB before I deleted some programmes . My D-drive has a total size of 27.4 GB and only 0.1 GB is being used, 1%. (Altoghether "40 GB")

Now I removed some programmes I wasn't using and accidently I removed programms that make my laptop run well.
Now, what the thing at the moment is that I cannot use System Restore and Driver Rollback and during log on and of I don't hear the Windows Tune.
There is an exclamation mark on the questionmark at the Ethernet Controller and the PCI Modem, at 'Device Manager' --> 'System' --> 'Control Panel'.
Programms weren't loading properly, it took sometime for them to load. And at times would freeze.
I couldn't go on the Internet, but then I removed and installed Internet Explorer again and I could surf again.

So I panicked.

I should have bought a Partition Manager instead, which I did now. But now I want to restore my system to the factory settings first. I was thinking of buying a new Harddisk with more diskspace, I think the maximum size is 60 GB. Correct me if I'm wrong, I bought my laptop in 2003.
I don't know what else to do.

I have the Dell reinstallation CD's. They are:

1. - purple coloured CD --> Operation System, reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 1

2. - blue coloured CD --> Application, for Reinstalling Dell Inspiron Eurotools, System Software

3. - green coloured CD -->Application,for Reinstalling Dell Inspiron Eurotools, System Software

4. - blue coloured CD --> Application for Reinstalling Roxio Easy CD Creator,System Software

5. - blue coloured CD --> Drivers and Utilities for Reinstalling Dell Inspiron System Software

I think that's the right order for reinstallation, at least the purple one first and the Drivers and Utilites CD last. (and I backed up my important data allready)

I hope that with your help the problems with my laptop will be solved.

AndrewQuote from: apayem on May 11, 2007, 09:09:06 AM

Windows can delete partitions and allow you to create whatever size you want during the install. There is no need, and some risk, to playing with partitioning software.

That is correct. Start there AFTER you have backed your data up, if you need to.

Be sure you have downloaded and burned to a CD, SP2, an antivirus and an antispyware program and have them loaded before you even connect to the internet, or we'll be doing this again.

Solve : Unknown web sites in Internet Explorer History!?

Tonight while browsing the 'net using IE7, I opened my History pane and was amazed to find listed a selection of Web addresses that I had definately NOT VISITED....mostly GERMAN and Spanish sites relating to mostly search engines and web space! My first thought was that someone had hacked my PC and used my IP to access these sites. But why bother?
I cleared all history, cookies, .temp files etc and restarted. After a few minutes browsing I re-opened my History pane, only to find another new list of web sites, again Spanish or German.

Solve : Problem with Windows XP Home Edition?

Answer»

hi guys,
i'm having this weird problem where my computer suddenly freezes and the blue screen appears. when i restart it, there is this message that the computer has recovered from a serious error and when i report the error it says that the issue is caused due to clkdvr.sys, this happens like once or twice a day.please help me find a solution to this problem. i
-sankethHi Sanketh,

Can you give us more details about your system? RAM, processor etc...
Have you made any changes, software/hardware, prior to this happening?

also, I done a search on clkdvr.sys and it SEEMS to be a DOS file...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/76454
so it doesn't make sense that you have it with XP Home...

my computer is a lenovo 3000 N100 Core 2 Duo T 5500 processor with 512 MB RAM. I did not add any hardware before this STARTED happening. I dont think I have recently added any new software which might cause this problem. I did a spyware/adware search, VIRUS scan,i used PC DOCTOR 5 which comes with the system and nothing showed up. When the blue screen appears it talks about some kind of hardware/driver problem and I checked for driver errors in the device manager and nothing there too. this problem usually happens when i'm using accessing internet through IE browser (i have IE 6) and i'm wondering if its because of a problem with IE. i did a similar check on clkdvr.sys and i got the same page as GX44 did and i'm wondering why there should be a problem with a DOS file on Windows XP Home. and the sudden freezing and blue screen and shutting down happens only once or twice a day or sometimes even rarer than that. its been happening for the last week or so.Have you tried searching your system for this clkdvr.sys file?

Bit of a longshot but it may just turn up... stranger things have happened...Have you checked with Lenovo?when did this start happening??

what new software have you added recently?

is your windows up to date

Solve : Videos on itunes coming up as a bunch of colors?

Answer»

I've fixed my sound issue and my ROUTE rissue, thanks everyone. But now when I play my VIDEOS I get a bunch of wild colors. It's on the videos bought from itunes and the ones that weren't. I'm running XP Pro. What SETTINGS have you CHANGED recently?

What Antivirus protection do you have installed?
EDIT: And is it only iTunes?I reinstalled the drivers for the Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 and now I have the videos. But the songs play but the images change every 2-3 seconds it never used to do this. I have Macafee firewall, running XP, recently installed a cd/dvd writer and added Office. Sounds like a codecs related problem

Have you tried a video player, besides iTunes?

Did the problem begin before or after the Video Drivers update?

It seems to be just happenning with the itunes videos. Noticed it after the driver update because before there was nothing. Previously itunes had been working fine. then rol BACK the driver
It says there was not a driver to roll back to?sounds a bit like DRM protected wmv files when you don't have the license.

ooohh thats no good..

did you dl it? if so was it from a torrent??shrooms ? ?

Solve : Intrusioin Attemps?

Answer»

I keep getting a message fro Panda Internet Sec 07 saying "A intrusion attempt has been blocked". How can i further protct my pc from intruders, and even though my Wi-fi is disabled and i am useing a cable conection could that still have something to do with the attemps?
I wouldn't worry so much but the messages are popping up more and more all the time- so much as 10 times every 10min.
would it be a hacker, software, virus, or even a LOCAL intrusion(someone trying to use my net by hacking into the wi-fi)!!
IF ANYONE COULD HELP ME I WOULD REALLY APRECIATE IT!!!!!!Are you on an encrypted network? A router? Any P2P downloads? More details are always better. The network- well its a Netgear wireless router(RANGEMAX WIRELESS ROUTER WPN824), weather the network is encrypted or not i would not have a clue. As far as the P2P is conserned yes i use UTorrent but get the message weather i am downloading or not! OH and i also use Limewire Pro, it that is any helpYou can download a LOT of nasty stuff from TORRENT sites depending what you are sharing. If programs, you have a 99.9% chance of being infected.

Have you RUN a virus and spyware scan? If you did it from safe mode and it was all clean, try the online scanner at www.trendmicro.com, which is free.
You might want to run Spybot as well, after you update it and immunize it, if you are not doing so already.

It would be a good idea to read your manual for that router about encryption, not broadcasting your SSID, etc.

Did you make any changes to your SYSTEM, programs, etc. before this became a constant thing?

What are some of the specific messages you get?Intrusion attempts are common. As long as they are being blocked there is nothing you can do to stop them. Since you are using P2P programs, most of the attempts are likely coming from someone trying to connect, but if you don't have the programs running, this will be seen as an attempt. Go into Panda's settings and tell it to stop showing the popup.

Solve : Programs don't work?

Answer»

This just happened to my friends computer:

He says everything is just .lnk and NONE of the programs work.can we have more INFO?
processor, ram, anti-virus,ect?anti virus is mcafee and its a Pentium 3 processork and ram???He doesn't know.Actually it's 256.yes, so the ram is 256, its a P3 processor, Im Using Ad-Aware and Mcafee and everything is .lnk.

I've tried restoring hte system 3 times. It works for 3 - 5 mins but then everything goes blank again.

I tried reformatting TWICE, and BOOTED from the CD but when i get to the "R=Reparif, F3=New" screen, the Keyboard Freezes and doesn't seem to respond.

HELP!!!!Salman and Taylor Hewitt:
The topic was started by Taylor
Salman, are you the person with the computer issue?

This would happen most likely because of a registry error
Or a virus

Do you keep McAfee updated? yea, its my computer, and yes i had it updated, but now its gone,i can't find it anywhere. What happens if you try installing a new program? Does that get turned into a .lnk file too?

And have you tried running any of these programs from C:\Program Files instead of just using their shortcuts in the Start menu?yes, I downloaded MCAFEE again, in a rar file and as soon as i un-rared it, it BECAME .lnk.

And yes, i tried doing C:\program files.. but ti doesn't seem to work, for example i tried opening a song by typing in it's directory and root, and it says this: "The file does not have program associated with it for performing this action. Create and association in Folder Options control panel". Plus the icon for the songs are the WMP icons..

There's some weird *censored* going on...You mention downloading McAfee in a .rar file

Where are you downloading it from?
If you are "downloading" McAffee as a .rar then it is from some warez site (which we don't help with) and you are probably infected by the many things you get from those sites.Never a truer word spoken...

Looks like it's all making sense now, eh?

Solve : freeze ups?

Answer»

I don't know where to start.I am running IE7.
About a month ago while away my brother was on my pc and I got gosh only knows what kind of virus and spyware on it.
I thought I had it cleared out and THREE days ago I came back to finish my work and save my info and it was froze on the screensaver.
I had to turn it off.

When I rebooted all was fine. I was able to click on my favorites tool bar and such. Then I click on Yahoo and go back their page and try to TYPE in the "search" box.
My curser is froze. Again I shut her down.
I try a different approch. I try to click on the search box that is in my TOP toolbar. Same thing.

So then I am trying to back up and save file. Now I am finding I also cannot click on any of my files. Same freeze up. I also noticed if I click on the very top bar, were it says Winders Internet Explorer (in blue) It freezes.

If I try to access any files. Same thing. I am lost and desparate. I have this pc but I need files I was working on in that one desparately!
I know, kicking myself for not backing those up.What are you using for protection? Try rebooting in safe mode and try your scans or at least back up your files.Need...more...info...gasp

OPERATING SYSTEM / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / did it ever work right / installed any new software / tried booting into Safe Mode with Networking, downloading all your antivirus/spyware and running them?

Quote from: wassg on May 08, 2007, 07:44:47 AM
On new XP floppy downloads fragmented.
Please elaborate on "fragmented". Exactly what happens?

Please clarify the facts. Your wife has forms on floppy disk that came from a scanner at work. Is that it? And, at home, these forms can be viewed OK on the old comp but not on the XP comp. Is that it?

thanks. sorry for confusion, I am new to all this. wife's "forms" from her work place on floppy disc worked fine on old computer (now scrap) but will not work on new windows XP. Text is scattered about on the form and strait lines distorted. Also tried emailing "forms" from workplace to home, same sort of problems as using floppy. Also tried scanning a paper copy to computer ,can not get this to work. these "forms" must be capable of being written on in normal text, as in "filling in a form". NB. her workmates have succesfully emailed these "forms" to home computers. Have just realised we may have language differences! Im english, will fill in personel detail when I work out how to. Thanks, wassgWho has language differences?

I think you need to get the facts straight. I'm not aware of any scanned IMAGE that can be filled in on computer screen, although I'm not an expert on scanning software. But, I get the impression you're really talking about a PDF DOCUMENT, which, in some cases, can have fill-in capability.

Exactly what type of file are you talking about? What software is being used to create these files? Sounds (maybe) like MS Office / MS Word version conflicts?

Thanks,I am ignorant, whats aPDF file? Just do not understand why used to work and now does not, also why cant email when others can. Do not know how these files were created, different files by different people. Maybe I should go away and study more, but where ? wassgA Microsoft Word file will the extension .doc added to the name. An Excel file will have the extension .xls added to the name. To open a .doc file, you need Word or some other word processing program that recognizes .doc files in order to open it. To open a .xls file, you need Excel or another spreadsheet program that will recognize .xls files. Get the idea?

Normally, the filename for computer files consists of the unique filename, which WOULD precede the period, and an extension indicating the type of file. That's why I was asking about the type of file you're talking about. If it's a file with a filename with a .pdf extension, then it's a file that requires software that can read .pdf files, such as Adobe Reader. If you try to open such a file with Word, it won't look right; it will probably be unreadable.

If none of this is making sense to you, then you do, indeed, need to "go away and study more".

Solve : HP LaserJet 5L printer?

Answer»

My hp laserjet 5L printer does not print dsark enough. Is there a way to make the printer print darker?

Look into the properties for the printer and try to take it off the economy mode...

If that doesn't work.
You can go to printer and FAXES file right clic on the printer and go to printer preferences.
There you have a tap called color and there ou can change what ever you want.a possibility...

That could help but if your printer settings aren't wright you could buy the most black inc you would still have a grey color.Well, he'll soon FIND out. PS It's called "toner".
thanks didn't know that.

Solve : windows so slow it took 8 min to load...?

Answer»

i reloaded my xp system i am running a dell 2400

the computer is so slow i started a virus scan last night at 5 pm at 6am it was still running. it takes over 8 min to load from the boot.

i checked out the ide setting is on dma ultra dma... any one have any thoughts....Did you re-install your MBoard, video and all other drivers ? ?
yes i did maybe i should try again...

the computer has 512 megs of ram. is this enough.??
it is a 2 gig hurts pent 4 and has a 80 geg hard drive...wonder if i need more mem...ram

That machine has other issues...although 512 won't be blazingly FAST it is more than enough to run XP fine with no problems.

This also would not account for the extremely slow bootup time.

If the virus scan took a long time it could be because it was the first run on a new install but it still sounds slow to me.

How much free space is on that drive ? ?

When's the last time chkdsk and defrag were run ? ?

What prompted the re-install to begin with ? ?the computer is a friend of mine and it was blue screening. the used space is 2.90
and the free space is 71.5

gigs.

i will work on the other things you sugjest. will get back to you when done...thanks for the advice....talk back soon doing defrag now should take around 10-11 hours....You're sure the IDE is at UDMA and not PIO mode ? ?

Check both IDE channels...Quote from: gordenLidy on May 10, 2007, 08:10:28 AM

I don't know if I'd say that about mine...

That PC sounds seriously slow!!!

I assume you did a clean install? with a format and everything? is everything seated right on the motherboard and drives?when you say clean install what do you mean. in set up it shows the c:\ partition ntfs 776258 mb 74074 free

under that it shows unpartitioned space 8 mg..i used the ntfs partion to install right??

or do i need to make a new partitionTo do a clean install, you would boot from the windows xp cd and format (erase) the hard drive.ok did a clean install in process of loading all the driers and software now. still seems very slow to me i have not put on av stuff yet.

will do that last. I think this computer is dead time to put it on a train track and watch it GO by by

Remind me why you reinstalled Windows in the first place.is it posible to put windows 98 2nd ed over xp if i do an fdisk....

the computer is a dell 2400?

Solve : Microsoft word help.... View size restricted!?

Answer»

Hi all

This is something that has been plaguing me for as long as i can remember...
Ok so normally when you open up a Microsoft Word document, there are a number of options you have for viewing the document. This ranges from a number of size percentages, followed by Page Width, Text Width, Whole Page and Two Pages, as seen here.

Now, occasionally documents will get stuck in a restricted mode, with just some percentages and Page Width but thats it. As seen here:

This is increadibly annoying, as no matter how MANY times you open up a new document its still stuck in this format. The only way I have found to get it back to normal is to find an older document that still has the expanded viewing options avalible, delete the entire contents, then save that as a new BLANK document and start over with that. Seems very STUPID and INEFFICIENT to me.

Does anybody know whats up with this and how I can switch it back to the normal expanded options? Why does it even revert to this anyway?

thanks a lot!

It all depends on what view you are in.

Go up to View on your top menu bar. If you are in "Print Layout" view, then you will have all the options you are looking for, i.e. your top picture. If you are in "Normal" view, then your options will be restricted like in your 2nd picture.

These views can also be changed bottom left of the word window just above the Page display. And if what Rainman suggested didnt work, you might try clicking File
and then "Save As"
it might be able to work with the restrictions. (I have never worked with a document with restrictions)

Or, PRESS CTRL+A (select all)
and then CTRL+C (copy)
and then CTRL+N (make new document)
and then after the new blank document loads, press
CTRL+V (paste)

Try flipping the monitor upside-down. How does that work?
Thanks but it's a bit noticable Nobody on this *censored* site is ever satisfied. I'm not a miracle worker, people!I have GE Force 6100.
Right CLICK Desktop - Properties - Settings - At the right bottom - Advance -
Click GE Force Tab - Click the + sign in front of - GE Force 6100 -
You should now see NV Rotate - Click it and change monitor screen.I know about that, just dunno about the hotkeys It took me a while to figure it out because I use resolution 800X600 and the Hot Key won't work in that Resolution.

Right Click Desktop - NVIEW Properties - Hot Keys - Click the plus sign in front of - Display MODE - Click Rotate Display - Add - At the top Select
90 degrees - Left click None - Hold down on the Alt Key and press R
Click OK
Your Resolution needs to be set to 1024 X 768 for your Hot Key to work.
I used the Alt key + R for Rotate. Easy to remember.

When you open NVIDIA Display you will see the Hot Key listed for 90 degrees.
I don't think a restart is needed.
Anyway the above worked for me when I held down on the Alt Key and Pressed R

One other thing. If NVIEW Properties is not showing than a setting has been changed. I changed it once but right this minute I can't give directions to find this setting. I will if needed.NVIEW Properties - If not displayed - Right click Desktop - NVIDIA Display -
ev17f2 - On your left click - Desktop Management - On your right -
Click Enable - Apply
With this Enabled you can now go to NVIEW Properties from your Desktop
and on to Hot Keys.hmmm...if i right click on desktop, there is NVIDIA Control Panel.....and that's not it..

Solve : Help me find my 10gb recycle bin lost in deleted XP profile!?

Answer»

Hello all,

So something messed up and my user profile in Windows XP Home Edition was deleted, although I can still access the files by going through My Computer in my secondary profile.

The PROBLEM is I had 10gb of junk in the recycle bin, which is nowhere to be found using the method above to view the dead profile's files.

Given that I'm on a 37gb already cramped laptop, this is obviously a slight annoyance!

If any prospective computer-sleuths out there have any leads on how to find the lost monstrosity it will be really appreciated.

Thank you for your time,

Martin. It's not clear what you are asking...are you attempting to recover what was in the recycle bin or free up 10G worth of space from previously deleted stuff ? ?A disk cleanup often recommended in computing forums is called CCleaner. I don't know whether installing and running it will remove that Recycle Bin stuff from your old profile but I suggest trying it. To minimize the size of the download, I suggest you GO here and download the Basic VERSION. It's the same as the Standard Build except for a Yahoo toolbar which is bundled with the Standard Build. Even if you download the Standard Build, you can elect not to install Yahoo toolbar, and I suggest you do so.

Once installed, run the Windows scan, Applications scan, and Issues scan. Remove everything it FINDS. The Issues scan cleans Windows registry, so when it prompts you to backup the registry, do so. If you'd like more info on configuring CCleaner, see Configuring CCleaner.

Check you free drive space before and after using CCleaner. How much space did it free up?

Solve : Misslabled drives?

Answer»

I have a Dual HD system C: 200g D:80g running win98se
I was reinstalling windows98se over it self I. When you do this Windows created a D drive to backup the old version
had and error tried rebooting and it wouldn't reboot. after doing some investagtion I discovered that somehow the "backup drive created by windows D" somehow GOT switched with C so the Windows backup is now C and the old C is now D.
How do it get it back the way it should be. MY second hard drive contains all my backupsShut down. Disconnect the second HD. Install windows. Shut down. Reconnect second HD. Reboot.reinstall windows from scratch?yep reformat and all

once reformatted all data will be lost for good so plz back up anything of importanceOK..ALREADY HAVEthen begin reformatting when you have timeActually i would have tried to just remove the current C: and SET D: as master which has the old Win98 and see if it will boot....been awhile since i did a Win98 install with a COPY of the old system being saved. So i cannot say 100% that it creates a boot sector etc that would make the "copy " bootable or it just copies the drive contents.

Even so if it didn't boot you could STILL try what i suggested; boot with a Win98 boot disk and at the A: prompt type sys C: and hit Enter...remove the floppy and re-boot and it should boot to that drive as long as it was set as active when fdisked and formatted...

Just food for thought.good new bad news
I thought I could get way without reinstalling used fdisk to delete the "C" PARTITION leaving only the "D" rebooted now only having "c" but Windows files were corrupted so back to square 1. I am reinstalling windows from scratch. Once I get the system back to where it should be I plan on upgrading to XP HOMEYou do not have to have Win98 loaded to use the upgrade for XP. You just insert the Win98 CD when asked.ok...but I still have to reinstall all the software and restire the data that was on there before I would rather do that under 98se where I can use the backups for data. If I upgrade to xp I can't use MSBACKUP. It's not supported under XP so this way I can restore all the data then upgrad. My only problem is going to be once I upgrade all those backups will be useless. As I understand it if you upgrade to XP you have to change the drive from FAT32(98SE) to NTSF. It' my understanding that a drive cant't have one partition as FAT32 and anoter as NTSFQuote from: bac0926 on May 12, 2007, 12:43:17 PM

It' my understanding that a drive cant't have one partition as FAT32 and anoter as NTSF

Incorrect. I have two hard drives in this machine, each with one FAT32 and one NTFS.

Instead of MSBackup, if you just backup the folders of your important documents, then you have no need for backup schemes that do not work on another operating system. good idea for the future...i wiLl have to consider then upgrading to XP and Installing 98se for use with existing backups. The only reason I cuse a backup is that it take less time writing compressed files to DVD-R then uncompressed. I back the stuff up to my D drive then take the accumlated backups and write them to DVD-R

Solve : Computer Freezes During Startup 1st time. Works 2nd/3rd time after turning off.?

When I boot my computer, it freezes with a blank, black screen. This happens after the black Windows XP loading screen appears. At this point I have to turn off the computer manually by pressing the on/off button and then try again. It comes up with the screen asking for Safe Mode/With Networking/LAST Known Good Configuration etc. The computer usually always works and loads perfectly after this (I have tried both Last Known Good Configuration and Start Windows Normally several times, but I still get the same problem. I don't know why my computer never works the first time but usually works the second or third time, after I turn it off. By the way, this problem also occurs when I restart the computer.

I have downloaded and installed some things from the internet - media MONKEY, worms 3d (a game) and cucusoft ipod video converter. However if i remember right, I had the problem before i installed them.
It has been happening for about a month now. I don't think its a virus as I do have Mcafee Security Center, Adaware, SPYBOT and the rest of my computer is working perfectly.

Ccleaner

first run ccleaner to clean junk files out

then reboot in safe mode
rapidly press f8 before windows loads

run all of your scans and make sure they are up to date.

is your windows up to date too?

unlovedwarriorSounds to me like a bad connection somewhere. Try reseating everything, ram. video card, sound card, etc. If that doesn't work, it could be something on the MOTHERBOARD, such as a cold solder joint. When it works after some warmup time but not from a cold start, a bad electrical connection will almost always be the culprit. While the case is open go ahead and clean it out. Don't forget to use ESD precaution.

I tried some folder locking programs, but when locking the WINDOWS folder nothing worked =[

What are your specs?
Because my friends keep messing with my files etc.

What specs do you need?y dont you just password protect or account
because they can still go on my computer, i just want to make restrictions etc.active the guest account so they have limited accesswhat limitations does the guest ACCONT have?LosingStreak ........ Then as already been suggested create a guest account and then only let them have access to certain files and folders.

dl65 That, and what operating system are you using?

The only two operating systems that you could have that would allow your friends to change your files is Windows 98, and 95. (Or an un-updated version of Windows 98SE)

You would have to give us more info on what files they are editing. I'm not so sure i would consider them friends if they showed no respect for my personal property...on the guest account, can i stop users creating / editing any files or folders?they cant INSTALL things and they cant modify certain filesand how do i choose what files and folders they can and cant modify?Quote from: LosingStreak on May 09, 2007, 03:08:02 PM

and how do i choose what files and folders they can and cant modify?
The guest account will dissable access to your files, like your my documents folders, but it will set aside a folder for the guest account.

That way, they could use the computer, but without access to your STUFF.

If you give them a limited access account (using the account wizard under the Control Panel) you should be able to restrict access to certain programs as well.

Solve : MS OFFICE 2007?

Answer»

What, exactly, was the error message? Is patio's suggestion of installing it on another machine an option?the error I get when i try to install is:

Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 Trial encountered an error during setup

Installing office on another computer is not an option right now. I wonder whether you should download it again and then try using that NEW download to install it. Microsoft® Office Small Business 2007

Of course, you could probably resolve this by formatting the hard drive in that computer and doing a fresh installation of Windows, but I know you probably don't want to do that.I have tried reinstalling from a new download and i get the same thing.

what else are my options?Well, there is the extreme measure: Format the hard drive and reinstall Windows. how do i do that?Formatting the hard drive will erase everything on it. You'll need a CD with Windows on it, or you may have a separate partition on your hard drive with the files needed to reinstall Windows. Does one of these situations apply to you?

What make and model computer is it? dell optiplex 320Quote from: soybean on May 08, 2007, 04:18:04 PM

You'll need a CD with Windows on it, or you may have a separate partition on your hard drive with the files needed to reinstall Windows. Does one of these situations apply to you?
That computer came with a RECOVERY CD, didn't it?yes it did..

do I just run the cd?Yes, put the CD in the CD drive and RESTART the computer. You want to boot from the CD drive. If the computer boots from the hard drive, as usual, restart, access the BIOS and set the initial boot device to CD-ROM. Once the computer boots form the CD drive, you'll see some options on the screen. I don't know exactly what you'll see but you should see an option to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

Again, this procedure erases the hard drive. So, back up everything you want to keep. This would include not only Word files, Excel files, etc. but, if you use Outlook, whatever you have in it, plus browser Favorites/Bookmarks, etc. You'll also need to reinstall all programs that you previously had installed and want to continue using. Be sure to have a firewall working before you get on the Internet with it.

ok.. I have reinstalled Windows XP, but now I cant connect to the network. I have changed the group name and still cant see the other computers and also cant connect online. Go to Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections. If you're using DSL or CABLE for Internet access, select "Never dial a CONNECTION" on that panel. Click on the Setup button and proceed through the setup screens. Were you able to get an Internet connection?

I want to re-install windows but it wont work. The installing process ends when the computer re-starts and a menu comes up where you can choose to either start windows normally or to install windows. If you choose to install windows a blue screen comes up after a short while, where it SAYS that there is something wrong and you have to restart the computer. The re-formating cant be fixed thorugh BIOS either because there it says with red text "NOTICE! The number of discs is not adequate to create a RAID!!!" and no OPTIONS are avaible. The harddrive is installed in Serial_Ch1. What should I do so I can re-format or re-install windows XP on my computer? How about a clue as to the hardware involved, what happened prior to this and anything else that could be helpful?Sounds like a SATA drive may be involved here aye GX ? ?Aye.

Yes, I have a (1) SATA hard drive, MSI K8T mainboard, AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor, Windows Home operating system.Early on in the setup it will ask "press F6 for any ADDITIONAL drivers"...this happens fast so be ready.
At that point insert the floppy with your SATA drivers and hit enter to continue.

Make sure when XP is rebooting the floppy is removed and DO NOT hit the key to boot from CD when prompted...just let it run.

p.s. You don't NEED to enter the raid setup when prompted as we are not setting up a RAID array...Thank you so much for the help! You're more than Welcome. Stop by anytime.

Solve : Windows Updates, offline??

Answer»

Is there any way to update Windows XP WITHOUT going online? For example, can a person download all XP updates since SP2, burn them to a CD, then somehow direct Windows Update to browse the CD (or the files copied from CD to the HD) for necessary updates, rather than GO online?

I KNOW that you can download the updates, but then what do you do with them?

I would think this would be handy for someone who is on dial up or who wants to get their system SECURE before going online.

Solve : I hear sound but no video?

Answer»

I can't seem to watch videos on Winamp or Windows Media Player anymore. I got a ATI X1650 card and got the latest driver for it but it still doesn't fix the issue.A NEW video card would not solve this issue, its probably software related...

You may need to reinstall the software

Go to Start
Control Panel
and Add/Remove Programs

And uninstall Windows Media Player

Then find your VERSION, and reinstall it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology=

Do the same thing for Winamp, and reinstall it from here:
http://www.winamp.com/player/

This will re-associate the file extensions, as well as set any registry values that have been corrupted. What I said is that I just bought a new video card. I used to have an X850 but I needed to upgrade. This even happened with Quicktime as well.

Also, I did fix this issue by reinstalling Divx and that helped, now its HAPPENING again and I reinstalled Divx again, only this time it didn't work.

And yes, I went to upgrade both Winamp and WMP and that did not work at all.So, after you upgraded the video card you started to have visual issues? I don't think codecs are the problem here, you can't watch any type of videos or only certain ones?I just fixed it for sure this time. I went to the options>>>performance tab>>>advance button>>>disabled overlays.

However, I was using Media Player 10 before my card upgrade and left it that way and apparently, overlays must of gotten TURNED on and I don't let anyone on this computer unless they have permission. And no ONE has been on this one in awhile. That you know of...

My games (hearts, solitaire, etc) have dissapeared.
When I run Reg Cure and fix errors I am always left with two empty registry KEYS no matter how many times I scan and fix errors. If I use the computer for a few minutes and go back and run another Reg Cure scan there are dozens or hundreds of errors again.
Every other day or so, myvaccount info in Outlook Express dissapears and I have to re-enter the account info from my e-mail provider.
If I don't Reg Cure scan often the computer becomes very slow and everything but the cursor will freeze for minutes at a time.
Videos take forever to download, can't watch streaming videos as they constantly freeze.
I would appreciate any help that I can get .
I have tried to restore my system to an earlier time but I keep receiving a cannot restore message

Playing about in the registry can cause all sorts of problems. Have you run your virus scan in safe mode? Do you have a real Windows CD if needed? (Being an HP, probably not.)No Idon't have a DISK. I will try running a virus scan in safe mode. It's time to consider getting an XP CD preferably the one with the fancy holograms and Microsoft written all over it....you will be NEEDING it sooner than later. My computer will not open in safe mode. When I rebooted in normal mode it was very slow. Ran Reg Cure and had 17 FILE/PATH REFERENCE and 109 EMPTY REGISTRY KEYS. Was able to fix all but 2 EMPTY REGISTRY KEYS. Patio, by getting an XP CD do you mean I need to go out and PURCHASE Windows again? If you can't talk HP into sending you one. Are you the original purchaser of that machine? Solve : error c0000135 help!?

Answer»

Ok. My Windows XP is having issues. And I'm not the most computer saavy person...

It either freezes right off the bat or it turns to a blue screen that says

"STOP:c000135 {Unable to LOCATE Component}
This application has failed to start because winsrv was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I can ACCESS the F2 - Setup and the F12 - Boot Menu button, but I would RATHER not mess with them less I delete all my important files. If I don't press either of those buttons it goes to a screen that says it can't locate the primary or secondary hard drives and then it stays like that till I shut it down. The only people I know that could help aren't all that experienced or only know about MACs. And those come-to-your-house-and-fix-everything people are too expensive for me to afford.

I've heard this has happened to other people but that involved parallel installations or reformatting and other things that will dump all that is on my computer. Is there any way to rescue my files ?

Thanks for reading this, I would appreciate the help.

Here is what the Mothership says about that error message...do you have an XP CD for a repair INSTALL ? ?It says...

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
•T.V. Media (TvMedia.tvmbho) from Total Velocity Corporation is installed on your computer.
•You have not installed Critical Update 885523.
•You tried to install Windows XP SP2.

But...I don't have T.V. Media and I haven't tried to Install XP SP2... and i don't know about the critical update... I think I can locate the repair install disk, but I'm not sure they even gave one to me.

It says I should BACK up my files before I do this, but how do I do this if I can't access the files ?

Important This article contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs.Check to see exactly what CD's you have for this machine before going any further...let us know.

Solve : XP and Cyberalzheimer??

Answer»

Proably my question was placed in the wrong section...so...

Having installed XP, a fresh one, I notice that both my Outlook Express connection and WMP 11.0 sometimes just "are gone" as if they never were there.
OE6.0 asks me for all the info to put in to get the software to connect to the Net/provider again and WMP 11.0 asks to logout and log in again before it will play the music...a problem I dont have with the VLC palyer...
Lately even the usual IE7.0 starts to do the same as OE6.0....just disappearing...and when STARTING up again, the DESKTOP shows the FOLLOWING: busy INSTALLING the personal prefs in Inter Explorer 6.0??while I installed 7.0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!it takes some time and after a while the rest of the desktop is active again and when looking for 6.0 it's NOT THERE!!!!???
Is this XP getting Alzheimer SYMPTOMS too soon? it includes SP2 plus all the automatic updates... Did you happen to re-install all your drivers including the MBoard drivers after this clean install ? ?

Some network cards hate the native Windows drivers...
