Solve : Can't save my program's settings?

Answer»

I'm having a problem with my laptop

Whenever I open up a PROGRAM then open up its settings and modify it then click o.k, the next time I open up the settings for that same program, the settings have changed back to what it was before I modified it...i can't seem to save my settings.

The main problem I'm having is with the programs that automatically run when my COMPUTER starts up. When I open up the program, access its settings and uncheck the checkbox that says "run at startup", it automatically rechecks itself when I open up the settings for the program therefore I can't stop it from running automatically when my computer starts up.

My main concern is why I can't save my program settings. I don't think any virus is causing it because I scan my computer frequently and also update my definitions frequently.

Please can someone help me out DLoad and install a nice little app called Startup CPL by Mike Lin...it puts an icon in Control PANEL that gives you complete control on what RUNS at startup no matter how stubborn the program....I can only agree 100% about Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel item, I've been using it for years, and it's the first thing I install when I install an OS on a machine. It has saved my bacon more times than i care to count.

He has written some tasty little apps over the years.

I haven't seen ANYTHING new from him in awhile though.

Solve : shell32.dll,user32.dll,ntoskrnl.exe change?

Answer»

when i run avg free scan, the scan results ask me change shell32.dll, user32.dll, ntoskrnl.exe.. Is the problem serious? If so how do i change file? Also when working my laptop stops all of a sudden and a blue screen flashes which says that the software/ hardware u have installed is causing problem. when i restart the computer it says that the computer has recovered from a serious error. what do i do?? plz help!!!!

This has started a couple of days back.. The computer usually freezes when the blue screen appears and i have to restart. It asks me contact the DELL adminstrator(laptop is DELL) saying that a new software/hardware is causing this problem. It does say something like "releasing memory".No it does not happen in safe mode.

I had installed 3g player that day when the first time the problem occured but i UNINSTALLED it that day itself. But still that problem is persisting I am using WINDOWS XP. What is system RESTORE.. Is it safe? Would i lose any data?AVG isn't asking you to change those files. It's telling you that they've changed. This is normal, by the way. It's nothing to worry about.

As for your problem...
What OS is this?
How long have you had this problem?
What are you doing when it happens? Any specific programs?
Can you give us the exact message?
Does it still happen in Safe Mode?(1) Changed files...

It's OK. It's a good sign.

The changed files are normal. It happens when you update CERTAIN parts of Windows and when the system repairs files.

(2) Serious Error message...

Quote
You receive a "System Has Recovered from a Serious Error" message after every restart

If Windows XP restarts because of a serious error, the Windows Error Reporting tool prompts you to report the problem to Microsoft for troubleshooting purposes. Windows may prompt you to report this information every time that you restart the computer, even if no error occurred during the previous session. After this problem begins to occur, you are prompted to send the information after every restart, even if you do not send the information.

If you are running XP, you may need to install updates...

WORKAROUND

You can solve this problem by recreating the pagefile. To re-create the pagefile, follow these steps:

1.Click Start.
2.Right-click My Computer.
3.Click Properties.
4.On the Advanced tab, in the Performance section, click Settings.
5.In the Virtual Memory section, click Change.
6.For Paging file size for selected drive, click No Paging File, and then click Set.
7.Click YES after the following warning appears:

If the paging file on volume X: has an initial size of less than xx megabytes, then the system may not be able to create a debugging information file if a STOP error occurs. Continue ANYWAY?

(X is the drive letter and xx is the amount of RAM installed on your computer minus 1 megabyte.)

8.Click System Managed Size.
9.Click OK four times, and then restart the computer when you are prompted.

Is it safe? Would i lose any data?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084Read unlovedwarrior's link for instructions on how to use System Restore. Basically, it reverts your computer back to an older state, in the case of certain undesirable changes. No, you won't lose your data. You may, however, lose programs you've installed since that date. For example...if you used System Restore to go back to May 3rd, you might lose new programs from the last week. But you can just reinstall them.

I would use the Cleaner and Issues on CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar) and reboot. If this doesn't make any difference, then try using System Restore to go back to a point before you installed this 3G Player. If it doesn't work, you can undo the process.

Solve : BSOD when I try to get on the internet?

Answer»

For the past 2 weeks, every time I try to get on the internet (unfortunately I'm STILL in the stone age, I have dial up), I get a BSOD, a lovely "Page found in Non-paged Area" message which also says it involves IntelC52.sys (sorry, don't have the stop code handy right now). I checked my modem, no LUCK there. I also tried to reinstall my connection program and that didn't work (I can't get it to connect either). I've run 5 different anitvirus and spyware apps and can't find anything either. What can I do to fix this short of reinstalling windows. My computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 that's 3 yrs old (Pent 4 HT 2.5GHz, 80 GB primary hard drive, 1.5 GB RAM, XP SP2). Any help would definintely be appreciated.DLoad and run memtest and let it run for a few hours...

Pagefile errors have nothing to with the modem or going online as they are system or driver induced errors.

Report back with the memtest results. It doesn't stop by itself it just loops thru each TEST continuously.

If it is not the memory this may require a repair install of XP ...you could try to perform a checkdisk by startin from the winxp cd and gettin into recovery console,,
then type chkdsk /r

Solve : Computer stops every few seconds Windows 98?

Answer»

Hi. I'll tell up front,I'm REALLY weak with this stuff so I hope you'll bear with me. Anyway, a couple weeks ago the hard drive went out. I took it to a place, they installed new one. Reloaded Win 98. The problem is that about,I'd say once a minute the computer STOPS. Like it's trying to catch up,or doing something else. This can last 15 to 20 seconds approx. Never did that before. I use this computer for the internet MOSTLY, but it doesn't matter what I'm doing it does this. Even the SCREEN saver will pause then start again. Any Ideas would be appreciated. Just typing this message took a while. Thanks. Did you re-install all the drivers including but not limited to MBoard, video and sound ? ?As far as I know everything is loaded. I'll research that. Thanks.

Solve : Missing system32\hal.dll File?

Answer»

My computer would not shut down from the Start/Turn Off command. I pulled the POWER cord, waited a few seconds, and turned the computer on. Now I get the following message at boot up: "Windows could not start because the following FILE is missing or corrupt - system32\hal.dll Please re-install a copy of the above file." How can I resolve this PROBLEM. I considered using fixboot from the Recovery Console. However, I do not have enough information about fixboot to know if it will be the solution. I am running Windows XP Home on a Pentium 2.4G PC with a 250G HD and 768mb memory. I do not have a floppy drive on this computer. I did not have a problem with this computer PRIOR to this time.Run a recovery from the XP cd.

Solve : Win XP Application RAM Usage?

Answer»

I'm a user who has a (very) basic understanding of XP. Our computers are 32 bit machines with 4Gb of RAM, (some have dual processors, some are dual core, 2 are dual QUAD core) Some of our large CAD models seem to CRASH frequently (Pro/Engineer software). The crashes seem to be tied to the amount of RAM available. We have XP Pro, SP2.

1. Will increasing the amount of RAM on these machines solve the problem?

2. Can any 32 bit software use more then 2Gb of RAM

3. Of the 4Gb available, 2Gb is for OS only and is the remaining 2Gb available to all software processes?

4. Can we change the boot.ini to the /3Gb to solve the problem, or will this cause other problems?

4. Will 64 bit machines with 4Gb have the same problem? 64 bit with 8Gb?

Thanks,

Jimi think 32 bit windows can only deal with 2 gigs unless you mess with the bios but im not sureinstalling Winxp X64 edition should solve your problem;)

good luck! The RAM tuning may not be setup properly...

Solve : Finding & deleting pending Windows updates?

Answer»

At shut down time my Windows XP Pro SP2 says there are 17 UPDATES that need to be installed, I advises me not to unplug or shut down the PC because it will happen automatically.

I leave it on for the entire night and nothing happen: the 17 pending updates are still there next morning.

On the other hand I don't know how they arrived to my PC becasue OPTION I stated for updates is "Download them but let me choose what to install".

¿Is there any way for me to DISCOVER where those 17 updates are and delete them?

Solve : Windows ME Computer Crashed - How to restore? HELP, please.?

Answer»

Alright, so this computer is a Windows ME and all of a sudden, it crashed. The computer, afterwards, would start up normally, and then nothing would happen. All icons on the desktop were gone, clicking on one would bring up nothing. Nothing would work. Everything is gone, obviously. We were out of town for a week, and we came back and it is still the same.
We found the start-up DISC thing (in this case, it is a floppy), and we inserted it and tried to see what it did, if we could restore it. Nothing is happening still. Is this computer completely gone, or can we still fix it somehow? What is the make and model of the computer? Do you have a Windows ME CD? Any CD's that say Microsoft on them? How about some (any) clues about the actual HARDWARE? Did you have malware PROTECTION running? Any recent problems?

Before we can PRONOUNCE it dead or alive we need to know what the patient looks LIKE.

Solve : system Halted?

Answer»

I shut down my pc after I was on the internet and when I started it again it booted up to where it only displays the black screen with the windows logo, later on it wouldn't boot up at all showing these messages: PXE-E61: Media test Failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting intel PXE ROM
Boot Failure: System Halted

I also inserted the Restore CD1 of 2 in the CDRW and after few SECONDS the screen shows at the bottom :
Unrecoverable exception, Program terminated
X:\>...
My System's details: VPR Matrix, Windows XP Home Service Pack2, 512MB RAM, Intel Pentium4 1.80GH, MacAfee security through Comcast

I have had this computer for 6 years since new, never have i had a problem with it, lately my kids have been playing games on the internet... I admire your dedication.can you boot into safe mode??

tap f8 before windows startsThe 2 most common causes of this are a failing CMos battery or a loose connector to the hard drive.
If this is a desktop this is fairly easy to check. Remove a side panel and all power sources and replace the CMOS battery on the MBoard (about the size of a dime)
While you are in there unplug and re-seat bith cables to the hard drive...four pin power and the IDE ribbon cable.
The other thing that makes this pop up is that your machine is also set to possibly boot to a network which you probably don't NEED so dis-able it in the BIOS.

Now if it's a laptop this is a bit trickier so post back and let us know...

Also unfortunately since you used the Recovery CD to try and recover from this error your data may well be gone...even though it did not FINISH...thank you guys, I tried changing the CMos battery, unplugged and plugged the cables to the HDD but I'm still getting the same message: boot failure, system Halted and I pressed F8 that displays the boot devices as follows: Removable Dev
HDD
ATAPI CD- Rom
IBA 4. 0 .19 slot 0208
I also pressed F10, looked in the BOIS set up Utility that lists:
1st boot Dev: Removable Dev
2nd: ATAPI CD-ROM
3rd : Hard drive
4th : IBA 4.0.19 slot 0208
anything else I can try before I It does not find an operating system on any device. You can do a complete reinstall of windows (and lose all your existing data - if you haven't already) or can replace the HD, install windows on it, then slave the defective drive and attempt to recover any data on it.Travel Here for a thread with the exact same error message...perhaps there is a solution that will WORK for you...
Remember to write down any BIOS changes made and only change ONE item at a time to keep from getting all mucked up...

Solve : external ram?

Answer»

Is it possbile to get external ram for windows ex pavilion 452.uk i have checked some sites on the net but i have no clue what to do i know once i get some new ram my pc will run much faster well and a new hard drive Have you considered upgrading your ram in situ?

According to this you can go up to 2Gb so whats with the 'external ram'?I think the problem is that they do not know how to install SAID RAM, or what they need.
External RAM is not possible (not feasible, certainly).
Go to crucial.com and use their memory adviser tool, that will tell you what type of RAM you need.
Then you can buy it DIRECTLY from them or from somewhere else.
As for installing the RAM, Google for "how to install RAM" and you'll find out in no time.
Hope this helps. Thanks i will do that i just dnt WANT to mess my computer via installing it wrongThe SITE i was given didnt have my model sent them a email about the ram , i hope they find something i wil buy it as soon as i get some feeback from the email i sent them. Cheers guys massive help You're welcome.
Believe me, RAM is simple to install.
Just FOLLOW a good guide and it'll be fine.

Solve : My Windows XP got hacked or something... "/?

Well, there's a flashing icon at the bottom with all the other icons, and its really bothering me. Time to time it also comes up with a pop-up message. If I right or left click it, it goes to the website http://www.spylocked.com/.

These are pictures of the icon that FLASHES back&forth and the pop-up message. Anyone know my options to fix this? >_<

I found the following description of the product from a very trusted security site:

Quote

aggressive, deceptive advertising; stealth installs (1); false positives work as goad to purchase; uses inadequate scan/detection scheme; same APP as AdwareDelete, AntiSpyZone, AntiVirus Gold, MalwareWiped, SpyAxe, SpyFalcon, Spyware Sheriff, SpywareStrike, TitanShield ANTISPYWARE, & VirusBlast [A: 4-11-07 / U: 4-11-07]

This is what is known as scumware because all they want is your money...

DLoad and run a little program called Shoot the Messenger which will turn off the garbage you are recieving.

Next re-boot into safemode and run all your security apps and let them fix what they find .

Oh, and I only have spysweeper. >_>

This is not good...Since nobody's suggesting any protection, I guess I will...

First, get CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar) and clean up with the Cleaner and Issues features.

For anti-virus, download and install AVG Free. And for spyware, get AdAware SE Personal and Spybot Search & Destroy. Update all of these programs and scan with them in Safe Mode (one at a time). Let them clean whatever they find.

And because I'm sure you'll need a little bit of extra cleaning up, download HijackThis to its own folder and post a log for me to look at.Quote from: annamariall on May 12, 2007, 04:32:00 PM

I'm going to do the safemode scanning in a few hours, when my family won't bother me about it <.< And so far I've downloaded CCleaner, and am in the process of AVG Free.Be sure and post back on everything that is found. Solve : Deleting files, recycle bin and free space?

when i went into the recycle bin, i noticed that there were fewer files in there than i had actually deleted.
so i emptied it anyway, and when i check on my used space, it is still showing 80% as being used. i even TURNED off the computer for awhile, and that didn't help.
any suggestions, would be appreciated. thanksNeed...more...info...gasp

Solve : Installing Windows Xp, Partition size??

Answer»

Hello everyone
Im INSTALLING WINDOWS XP Pro. on a single new HDD 300 GB, im at the stage where i need to create partition size. What would be a good size for C: ? and D:
Any kind of advise would be great. Thank You.For me it would depend on how many programs you're going to install & their size / types of data (photos, music files). If a lot of programs, then a bigger size for the operating system (C:). If more data, the a larger size for the extended (D:) drive.

I have 2 80G hard drives, one for the operating system and ANOTHER for all the data I save. That way if the hard drive with the operating system tanks, all my data is on another drive and safe.

Alan <><
I have a 250GB HD, (C:) partition is 30GB, and rest is (D:)

Don't think you'd need much more than 30GB for the primary partition. Could possibly go as little as 15GB, but if you have a 300GB HD then your not going to miss that extra wee bit to take it to 20 or 30Gig.

All you'd need to do is create a "Program Files" folder in the (D:) drive and install programs to that directory. That way all your data is secure, albeit LESS secure than having 2 HD's like ale52's setup.Hello and Thank you for your advise GUYS, you have given me a very clear information. Deo i like the idea with your two hard drives, im going to try that on my other PC. Take care. Thank You.I started with 10 GB but in the last 3 years I have grown it to 15.Be sure to let us know how you get on Tufek100

If he knew what he was doing you can't....installing an OS normally obliterates the previous OS unless you screw up the install.

I would start looking for a genuine Win2K CD.oh i guess i forgot to specify that i have a windows 2000 boot cd, and i thik the computer might have windows 98 on it as well, for when i put it in it gave you a variety of choices like, windowws 2000, and 98, 95, me.

but when i try to do windows 2000 (what i thought the computer currently had) it just froze, and then for 98 an error came up up saying that it like couldnt make a registry, so i started putting in ms-dos commands into it, and didnt get farIs this a Win2K cd that says Microsoft all over it ? ?I think not. Well that'll slow the PROCESS down a bit...yaeh... it did, right now i have basically figured that there is nothing left to do except clear the hardrive of absolutely everything, and buy a new os. so how can i delete everything WITHOUT actually being able to access windows?

yes.. i was dumb and BOUGHT a boot cd not made by windows. To wipe the HDD clean DLoad and create a WinME BOOTDISK to a floppy ...run FDisk and then format and you're good to go...A new 2000 or XP CD will also allow you to format (erase) prior to an installation.

Solve : Re-activating Windows XP Home SP2???

Answer»

Quote from: Sid on May 12, 2007, 10:46:13 AM

And why does everyone AUTOMATICALLY assume people ask questions to break rules?!

Because that is the number one reason people have problems. They are running bootlegged copies of Windows and act surprised when something doesn't work right. Some are more open about it, others we waste a lot of time on before they admit it.

Did you read the link I put up there?

Does that apply to you?Quote from: Sid on May 11, 2007, 03:39:54 PM
Anyone else been prompted to re-activate their XP's recently?

Hardware changes could be the cause.

I seemed to recall a bug within Windows XP that MS once released a patch for which caused people to having to reactivate their copies.. But that was eons ago. Are you sure you have all the critical updates?

Quote
And why does everyone automatically assume people ask questions to break rules?!

Because we're being monitored by the anti-file sharing committee.

We all know file sharing is dangerous, illegal and could probably start a NUCLEAR war that will haunt you for the rest of your life.

Oh, and on top of that, everything you ask is suspicious, because, well, some people here are hypocrites.

"Oh you have to reactivate XP? That's suspicious! Wonder what kind of illegal activities that Bill Gates wouldn't approve of you have been up to even though the problem in question is completely random"

"Hey you got 300 VIRUSES? Oh, well we'll just help you. No questions asked. Oh nevermind the fact you could be a pedophile searching for kiddy porn, as long as we don't know, it doesn't hurt."

Yeah, I'm sure I've got all the current up-dates.

I have tried it twice but still produces the same result. In installing win2k on a single partition with WIN98 for dual boot, there is no conflict. But when IVE tried it to winxp, it will erase the existing operating system installed. how will I accomplish the SAID task. thanks and more power.u r tryin to install a new OS, so, u xpect the unexpected...

maybe the partition u gave it is too small n the OS are kind of related in their programmin, all it does is to load on the FOUNDATION of the old OS.

I think i'm rightDo you want to install Win2K with XP or 98 with XP?

I think Win98 would need to be installed before XP... but they would have to be on seperate volumes.

2. When I try to log onto my ISP the taskbar lights up with Virtual memory minimum too low.

3. Often when using the computer the whole system crashes and the word

msa64chk.dll (mostrar dialer) - Details

If your computer has a file called 'msa64chk.dll' on it, you may have a dialer program known as 'mostrar' INSTALLED on your computer. This program is usually added to a system manually by running an installer, when you visit certain websites (whether intentional or accidental). The mostrar process will take over the modem in your pc and attempt to phone overseas or high-toll telephone numbers.

msa64chk.dll is considered to be a security risk, not only because antivirus programs flag mostrar dialer as a virus, but ALSO because a number of users have complained about its PERFORMANCE.

mostrar dialer is likely a virus and as such, presents a serious vulnerability which should be fixed immediately! Delaying the removal of msa64chk.dll may cause serious harm to your system and will likely cause a number of problems, such as slow performance, loss of data or leaking private information to websites.
Remove Mostrar
About Mostrar

Mostrar is a premium-rate dialers used by porn sites. The dialer drops a fille named msapasrc.dll on the system. The file implements search hooks to monitor the data entered in the address bar.

How to Remove Mostrar?

Follow these removal instructions to remove Mostrar from your computer:

1. Open the Registry Editor ( click Start > Run, type 'regedit' and click Ok).
2. Navigate to the key: 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run'.
3. In the right PANE, delete the value named 'MP3NumberOne' or 'ContentDownload'.
4. Search and delete the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Classes \ CLSID \ {582788CA-7014-4904-A4EE-6FB6108AFE8E}
5. Reboot the computer.
6. Delete the following files using Windows Explorer:

%System%\msa64chk.dll
%System%\msapasrc.dll

Note: %System% is a variable, you should replace it with the system directory in your computer, by default this is C:\Windows\System (Windows 95/98/Me), C:\WINNT\System32 (Windows NT/2000), or C:\Windows\System32 (Windows XP).

Thank you, I am going to attempt this now.
I will follow the instructions that you have given me. I may seem a bit dippy but what do I have to do to replace the %system% in my computer?
thanksplz back up register if you are going to mess with it.

i suggest letting spybot search and destroy and avg anti-spyware have a goHave run spybot and loads of spy things came up. Cannot find the files to delete when I follow the instructions to run the regedit.
Any Ideas?
Also, computer is crashing a lot at the moment several times a day. Do you have any advice about the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

When did this problem start? Have you made any recent changes?
Did you try System Restore?

Try this...
Open up Display Properties and choose the theme you want. Then click on Save As and save the theme somewhere and use that. Does your theme still change?Quote

Kelly's Korner has a registry edit that you could try, but I WOULD strongly advise that you backup your registry with Erunt before trying something like this.I had the same problem.
My problem was that My computer>Properties>Advanced tap>preformance settings.
Normally Let windows choose whats the best should be used.Unless you changed it yourself.
I had the problem that some program changed it to custom.
Can't that be the problem?
If it is it should be fixed when you use system restore.
System restore can't do any harm.
Maybe you have to reinstal some programs and updates but thats about it.

On another note, you are probably running out of RAM

Press ALT+CTRL+DEL and go to your task manager, and click the "Performance" tab and tell us what the CPU usage says, and the memory.

(Heh, using 687MB of my own memory right now)No like you can see at the bottom of my screen I have 1 gig RAM and I'm using just 457MB at this time.(FireFox is my only open window at this time.)
I don't thinks that was the problem.
But its fixed and I didn't had it again so no worries.
But still thanks.

Solve : Certain programs taking very long to load or don't load at all.?

Answer»

I don't know what happened, but suddenly the services console takes forever to load, it is "Not responding" but after ~10 min it finally loads and works fine. The same happens for the Palm Desktop. Directory Opus (an explorer replacement) appears on the task manager but won't load at all. The console and palm desktop also appear in the task manager since launch. The system is 99-98% idle during all this. Other parts of the computer seem unaffected.

Solve : My Mouse?

Answer»

I'm running an old HP with windows ME.

I used the comp. in the morning before work, turned it off, went to work. Got home from work went to go turn it on again and the display was set to the smallest area and only 16 colors plus the mouse wouldn't work. I reloaded the drivers for my monitor and graphics card and the display went back to normal but I can't seem to get the mouse to work again. I've TRIED a different mouse but still nothing. It's a PS/2 mouse. I've reloaded the drivers many times but still nothing. I don't think the PORT can go out just like that so what's going on?There is the possibility that the port can be bad.

Does you HP have diagnostic software installed...if not, try their site.

Or...simply try a USB mouse.Windows ME has a system restore, so you COULD try that. The more likely CAUSE is a bad PS/w mouse port. It happens. I got in a machine like that just yesterday. A USB mouse does solve the problem.

This computer that I'm on is my grandmothers computer, and it doesn't have volume on it! Nothing whatsoever. It says I have to download ActiveX Controls, but it won't work, please I just need some volume on here...Have you tried to locate the Sound Driver for your computer on the Internet?

First RIGHT click your speaker Icon and open Volume control
and make sure your sound is not MUTED. Located on your lower right.
If you don't have a speaker Icon go to the Control Panel and check your sound.

Next
Windows XP
See if your sound has been stopped in Services Under
Windows Audio.
Start - Control Panel - Open Administrative Tools - Open Component Services - Click Services (Local) and Scrowl down the list to Windows Audio to see if it says - Started. If stopped
Left click Windows Audio and click restart. -
Or
Right click Windows Audio - left click Properties - Left click Start
(Cite: http://ftp.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/150821.html )

If still no sound next try this But be careful because your in the Registry and you can HARM your computer.

Go to Start>Run, type in regedit and hit ok.

Navagate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound

"Beep" and "ExtendedSounds" should both be set to "YES" in order for the speakers to work.

If you still don't have any sound.

If the above doesn't work, go to control panel and open System Icon -

Hardware Tab - Device Manager - Click the + Plus sign for Sounds.......... -

Right click Realtek AC 97 (or whatever sound you have)- Left click - Update Driver.

To update you will need the CD that came with your computer.

For Windows XP but check anyway.

Maybe some of this will help or maybe not.
That's all I have on Sound.

Solve : CMOS Settings Wrong / CMOS Memory Size Wrong?

Answer»

Hey guys, I'm a total idiot.

Just got hit by some odd Trojan 'cus I suck at internets, it appeared on my screen like it was installing, I immediately cut the power off, (yeah, I know, BAD IDEA,) but I was in panic. So as I turn my computer on, it counts my RAM, blah blah blah, and then it gives me some odd message. It says:

CMOS Settings Wrong
CMOS Memory Size Wrong

Press F1 to go to Setp
Press F2 for Default Values

Or something alike the LINES of that. I press F2 to see my Windows boot screen and I smile in joy, hoping I got through without any damage, as the boot screen dissapear and I expect my logon screen to appear my screen is suddenly covered by a grid of purple and green rectabgles, my screen goes black for a while and it finally logs in.

I've been able to boot into my Widnows this way succesfully, (if you can call it that,) 4 times now, every time I get in my CLOCK has been reset and the date is set to somewhere around April 2003. Also since this started it keeps wanting to update Windows XP (KB896428) even though I have done it several times now. It's like my computer resets to what it was long before. Plus, at certain WEBSITES I'm not able to log in, I'm bounced back to the log in page, this happened after I deleted my Cookies, is this related or a whole 'nother matter?

Anyways---

I'm seriously afraid something is horribly wrong with my computer, and that's probably the case, so does ANYONE have info on what this might be? And what a solution might be?Replace the CMOS battery...as always when working inside the case remove all power sources first and take the neccessary anti-static precautions...

Solve : Using two programs on the same OS?

Answer»

Hi all,

I have Windows XP and I would like to be able to use version 6 of adobe reader and version 7 of adobe reader on my computer. Not at the same moment but as the need arises. I have some older programs that will not run on anything NEWER than version 6 but I have programs that don't run properly without version 7 or later.

Is it possible to configure my computer to do this? I have tried putting the older version on an external drive but as soon as I open the newer version of reader, it takes over, even if I select the external drive. Please help if you can.

Thanks,

Ed Martinwhat are the older programs? The primary older program is a parts fiche that is put out by CDMoto for my Honda Goldwing. They intentionally BUILT the program to run on adobe reader version 6 or older. I guess they did it that way to try to prevent fraud. have you checked the programs website for updates?Marty,
Some of the higher level "Pros" on the CH forum may blow me out of the water on this but logic tellls me that you were on the right track in your initial post when you reffered to the "removeable "H/D. However in my mind for that to work (so the ver.7 would NOT be available to "default" you need to REVERSE what you did. IE: put the ver 7 on the removeable and the 6 on the non removeable. Then when you want to use 6 don't turn on the removeable. Then it can only associate itself with 6 as 7 won't be available. How does that sound TECHIES? P.S. If you need to find an "older " version a web site called " older version(S?)" might have it-particular such a popular program as adobe reader.good luck, truenorthThe .pdf files will open one version or the other. If you open whichever version you want (hopefully they are in separate directories) and then open the file from there does it work?Consider what each version would put into the common system directory. Many applications put dynamic link libraries into this directory which if you have two versions of the same program might end up overwriting the copy for the other version. (Not necessarily fatal, but could be a problem)

Also depending how the application updates the registry, you might have the same problem of entries pointing to incorrect locations and components.

Just my 2¢. I would try SETTING up a new user profile for one version and use Admin rights to install the version you want on that profile...
Then do the same for the other version...

Solve : Encrypted Folder ??

Answer»

Hi can someone help me i have encrypted folder with song in it on my drive D: and i forgot that its encrypted and i reinstaled the windows on drive C: and now i cant play the song in that FILE can someone help me how to take ownership of the folder so i can play the song?If you reinstalled Windows that file would be gone unless it's on another drive/partition...

Try Here

However if the file is in fact encrypted this may not work at all.I'm guessing Neogeomk used a program to Encrypt it, meaning you need a PASSWORD to open that file and you need that specific program to open it.
Now because he formatted drive C, he lost the program and he needs a way to get into the folder.

My advice to you, Neogeomk would be to try and find the program you encrypted with.
It might help if you post the type of file the folder is if it has one. (E.G. file.txt <--that part)You might not be able to RECOVER it without the password. But, for what its worth, the topic "Take Ownership Of A Folder In XP" is on a number of sites, including Microsoft. You can find them in a GOOGLE or Yahoo search. Or just go to the MSN site.
Anyway, the information there does not tell you how to unravel an encrypt done by a third-party program. Too hard to do. That is what it means to encrypt a file Quote from: dslgeek on May 26, 2007, 09:23:20 AM

This is the link provided... The folder was encrypted so long ago that he doesn't EVEN remember doing it, and yet he remembers what's in it? Sounds like either very selective memory or a bad encryption job.

Or perhaps someone is trying to access something that they shouldn't be accessing...?

Solve : How do I "start over"????

I have to take some computer classes this summer, Windows XP Word, Excel and I believe the slide show one, can't remember the name, but anyway I need to take basically everything off of my computer that I don't need and start from scratch with ONLY the things I absolutely need, so I'm not taking up a bunch of stuff with wasted stuff, and so my programs run faster and better.

Does ANYONE know how to tell what you have to have and how to take everything off and start over, I think it'd be easier to start from scratch and add things on as I need them.

If you can help PLEASE email, my classes start in less than 2 weeks!!

In the meantime... If your not wanting to do a fresh install, then just check the control panel->Add/Remove Programs, which will tell you programs you currently have installed on your system.

As for KNOWING "how to tell what you have to have," thats a question only you can answer. Everyone has different needs for their system.

Where did you get the idea that your programs will run "faster and better" if you delete loads of stuff? I installed Microsoft Office way back in 2004, when there was nothing else on the computer, and Microsoft Word runs just the same now as it did then, even though there are lots more programs installed.

When you got your computer, it should have come with a CD called "System Restore" or an Operating System disk

Put it in your computer, and start it, go through the setup procedure.

Warning:
ALL data will be destroyed, any programs that you have installed now, and any files that you have saved will be removed.

You will, after that, need to install anything you need after that (eg: Microsoft Office, or Open Office)

Solve : installng windows 98 on a computer with xp?

Answer»

is it possible to install windows 98 2nd ed on a computer that is running xp home?

if i do an fdisk will it work...?

the computer is a dell 2400 with a 2 gig hard drive. and a pent 4 This can be done but you need to consider a few things...
1) The older OS should be installed first.
2) You would indeed need to use FDisk but remember this will erase all your existing data.
3) You need to create a partition for Win98. It needs to be the C: partition and has to be FAT 32. 2G should do.
4) Then you need to create a partition (extended) for XP. I wouldn't go under 20G for this.
5) Win98 gets installed first along with all your drivers including MBoard, video sound etc.
6) After you have everything running properly then boot with the XP CD. It will detect the Win98 install and ask if you want to overwrite ? Select no and it will ask where you want XP...select D:
7) You will then need to boot up and select XP to boot to and continue by installing all the drivers listed above, SP2 and all critical updates since then.
You can then install all your protection packages and connect to the web but not before...it takes less than 12 minutes now to get infected without protection.

You PROBABLY need a drive BIGGER than 2G as you stated, i'm assuming this is a typo.

Let us know if you want to proceed as there are obviously more details than this but i figured i would give you the condensed version for now...If you manage to both fit XP and Windows 98 on a 2GB HDD you've got to mail and tell Bill Gates. sorry i ment 80 gig hard drive not sure what the processer speed is. think it is a pent 4 something.

my mother board drivers are on a dell disk that is the chip set drivers. do i install them after the win 98 install is done. just boot to the cd i assume. i know how to create the PARTITIONS in fdisk and activate them the partition for win 98 the one on the c drive should i make it around 60 gigs....

i know i sound stupid to all of you but not sure about all this stuff...Revisit my suggestions and post back with any questions you have...
It seems you just glanced at them and that was a bit of typing...ok what do you mean by partition (extended) for XP. Is xp still going to be on the computer and also

what do you mean when you say after 98 is installed and every thing is running properly

will i be booting to 98 first thingok its me the stupid guy again

Huh? What has this got to do with your dual OS install question the computer was running very slow that is what started the whole thing it was blue screening ..then i reloaded every thing and it still ran very slow. so i wanted to install 98 to see if it would run better...So, the dual boot issue is nil now, right?Yes thank you for all your help sorry if i was a bit of a pest....No Problem.

I'll just copy, cut and PASTE all that info and throw it in the vault for a rainy day....

Solve : Windows XP won't load?

Answer»

Windows XP will not load on our computer a message APPEARS which tells us to start in safe mode or various other safe mode options,. We have tried them all to no avail. Any ideas we would be very welcome thanks.I assume you have your XP installation disk. Put it in the CD drive and the computer should be able to boot to the CD, no drivers are required to do this.

You may have to change your system bios setting to allow it to boot to the CD first.

When the setup program loads, choose Install , not repair. The first thing the installer will do is look for an existing installation when it finds your existing one, it will ask if you want to repair or do a new install. At this point choose to Repair.

Normally this works ok and you will end up with a functioning system with all your applications still installed.so your saying repair wont mess with the registry and i wont have to reinstall all my programs... sorry i just jumped into this thread like this... but that would help me out alot... CAUSE that is my main concern with my computer right now is that my computer had start up problems and i chose to repair windows... and then it said that maintanance had been completed and it resarted and said it was installing windows... but it wont mess with my programs correctComplete Instructions Here

Read thru it and become familiar with the process before beginning...especially the Warnings. Then print out a copy for reference...

You NEED an XP CD for this ...an OEM manuf. restore CD will not work.

If you do everything correctly your programs and data will be intact. Thanks for the info. Managed to find the xp disc, everything is working now except sound, we don't have a seperate disc for the sound driver, only a restore disc, there does'nt seem to be anything on this disc to restore only the sound. The computer is a Medion. DLoad and install and run Everest Home...this will tell you exactly what COMPONENTS you have...cut and paste the sound info here and we'll help track down the correct drivers...

Solve : Running old dos database under windows?

Answer»

Hi,
I use a database called FMS80 (written in 1980). It consists of about 35 programs including definition editor, report writer and has its own language. It all runs fine under windows exept for the following.
Under dos I use my sort program to sort AFILE.dat the SORTED OUTPUT file is AFILE.DAT. Under windows the sorted output file is called AFILE.1X. Can anyone tell me how to stop windows from changing my file extensions?
Any help greatly appreciated
GEOFFWindows creates it's own .dat files and may not allow a user to do so.I can use my rename program to ren AFILE.dat to AFILE.aaa and back again. It works fine. Does windows have a list of allowable file names? If so can you add to it?
Regards
GEOFFA bit of Googling showed me that you asked about this on April 11th on ST&T and didn't get an answer... Also that you asked about a cash register drawer issue...

You should be able to rename a file to have a .dat extension without problems. You are allowed to do that by Windows.

Windows does not have a list of allowable file names. It does, however, have certain forbidden characters that are not allowed in filenames. Obviously, Windows will not allow you to create or rename a file with any name at all if a file with that name already exists in that directory.

The following are legal and illegal characters in a filename (the space became legal with Windows 95):

* Legal: A-Z 0-9 $#&[emailprotected]!()-{}'`_~ and the space

* Illegal: |<>\^=?/[]";,* plus control characters

I am confused that you state that this database system was written in 1980, since MS-DOS 1.0 was RELEASED on August 12, 1981. It was in fact based on an already existing OS called QDOS which was in its turn based on CP/M, which only oldsters like me remember these days. So we need to be sure that the app was in fact designed for MS-DOS at all. Could it be meant for QDOS, PC-DOS or CP/M 86?

Furthermore, I see that FMS80 was a CP/M database system which people used to run on CP/M machines, eg North Star Horizons and Cromemcos.

I do not understand how it could even run on an Microsoft MS-DOS type system in that case, so i guess it must be a rewritten version. I suggest that, in common with a lot of older early DOS programs, that it cannot cope with modern FAT filing systems. FAT12 was the standard until 1987, when FAT16 was introduced.

I would suggest, therefore, that you could try creating a FAT12 partition, and booting your system from an MS-DOS floppy. Although MS-DOS version 1.25 boot floppy images are available, (see site mentioned below) MS-DOS 3.30 is the first version that supported 3.5 inch floppies. You can get a boot disk image here with IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, COMMAND.COM, FDISK.EXE, FORMAT.COM and SYS.COM, enough to run most DOS apps.

http://oldfiles.org.uk/powerload/bootdisk.htm

If you hunt around you can find complete DOS & early Windows (eg 3.1) install disk image sets... especially on p2p networks.

You might find these discussions interesting, and there may be useful info there...

http://www.vintage-computer.com/vcforum/archive/index.php/f-16.html

In such a situation, I think I'd download the free office suite, OpenOffice.org, and try importing the records from that old database called FMS80 to the database that's part of OpenOffice.org. Or, maybe buy MS Office 97 (the Pro version, which includes the Access database) on ebay.I don't understand the insistence that they have to be saved as .dat files...why not just work with them as they are ? ?That is the format the old database understands. There is a reason Windows keeps changing the extension, though, if that is really happening. Then the old database must be assimilated...Resistance is futile.Quote from: GEOFF on April 28, 2007, 11:03:44 PM

Does your DB recognize AFILE.aaa and will it open the file without having to change it back AFILE.dat? Thanks all so much for your input.
Contrex - I remember some old things. We used to run FMS under CPM, 2 X 12inch floppy drives. We didnt know anyone else with 2.4 mb of storage.
FMS was written by DJR associates who wrote the dos version then disappeared. Any knowledge of them would be great.
I have worked away in my little world of 64k memory ignoring technology but now see Mr Gates is finally going to get me. I have looked at other systems like DATAFLEX but I am too old to learn new tricks.
FMS runs our small business from cash register to stock control, p&l and balance sheets.
It has been working fine for years with WIN98 dos so I think maybe FAT16 is OK.
I have 2 icons on my screen. One 'run in dos mode' - every thing works fine. The other is under windows.
When FMS sorts a file, it only has 32K memory to work in (don't laugh) so it write a series of files and names them STEMP1.$$$. STEMP2.$$$ etc until the whole file has been read. Then it merges these files ONTO a new file and deletes all STEMP files.
I just say 'Sort AFILE' and fms does this by itself so I have no control.
In dos mode this works fine. Wnder windows FMS writes the STEMP files then goes to merge them and reports 'Cannot open STEMP1.$$$. It can t because the file is named STEMP1.0X. STEMP1.$$$ was not already there because FMS cleans up temp file after use.

Soybean
Thanks for the suggestion but there is nothing like writing your own stuff. FMS has a language - Very crude by todays standards. When GST was introdused in AUS it took me about 4 hours to rewrite all our stuff to cope with it. No learning new progs and battling through stuff you dont understand.

2k-dummy
system will not open AFILE.AAA . Just showing that under windows my rename command works fine - so why doesnt sort?
Does any one have an answer to my problem ??
Geoff, I think the problem is that with a few honorable exceptions, this forum is mainly composed of 12 year old so called "computer wizards", who think that 2000 was a long time ago, let alone 1980.

You are OK in DOS mode, you'll just have to stick to that.
Well put, Contrex. I hear what you are saying. I guess I am looking for someone who knows the insides of windows. Contrex - you seem to know more than anyone i have talked to. Do you know how this stuff works? Can you point me in the right direction?

Solve : just installed new os on new hdd and keeps crashing?

Answer»

can any body help me out ? i have just instaleed a new o,s ( windows xp) on my new hdd and my computer keeps crashing at randomn POINTS during SETUP i have tried using diffrent hdds and diffrent system install disks does any body know why this could be happening ?more details on the computer.. like specs power SUPPLY ram cpu

and why are you changing hhd?Yes, more details, please.

What OS were you running before?

The first 3 things I WOULD try:
Check your system board for any cracked or bulging capacitors (BROWNISH stuff coming out of the top).
Try updating your BIOS to the latest version, and reset BIOS settings to the defaults.
Try running a memory test on your computer (www.memtest.org)
Don't flash the BIOS...most times this is NOT the issue...

Check the jumper settings on that new hard drive and remove any other hard drives until you get the new one setup and up and booting successfully...

It should be jumpered as master and connected to the END of the ribbon cable.

Solve : Computer hangs on Microsoft update site?

Answer»

I was having svchost.exe error problems and the solution was to turn off automatic updates, which I did. There was also a patch from Microsoft to download, which I did. I'm ok doing my own update, except that when it goes to the update window (checking your computer for updates, the bar moving from side to side) it hangs and it never changes. Even to stop that window I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL to get out of it. I know the problem is with updates, but I can't turn on the automatic again and get svchost error messages. Any suggestions?

I'm running Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer 6 browser (since if I install 7 my computer really STOPS working). What type of connection do you have ? ?

When retrieving updates you may not see any activity for awhile which might make it seem the system is "hanging"....best to let it RUN it's course and finish.I have a DSL connection. I leave it "hanging" for a while before I realize it's not doing anything, about 10 minutes - a whole GAME of hearts! I know it SOMETIMES takes a while, but 10 minutes is too much time. Thanks for any HELP, patio. You can also try this site

Solve : changing screen resolutions?

Answer» IL try to condense this best I can. I ran aprogram to remove junk folders and it. Boy how did it. I ended having to REINSTALL windows xp home all over. Now the problem. SInce i have done that there is one particular program that wont cooperate worth a darn. It is a chat program with 3d graphics. The program is called furcadia and there is roxy i use with it called dogproxy. Problem is that when i start dogproxy the screen RESOLUTION changes from 800 x 600 to a lower setting. I go into display and change it back and its ok for as long as I dont close it and reopen it. When the proxy allows me to use the Furcadia program, the resolution changes on the Furcadia screens so large tha I cannot even see the bottom of the screen, nor the buttons to minimize or maximize, plus no matter what I RESET the screen resolution to it wont help. What the devil is going on?What program did you run to delete junk folders ? ?
Did you reinstall your drivers after the reinstall of Windows including but not limited to MBoard, video etc. ? ?
Does the program you are having trouble with include a Help menu ? ?

Calum: thanks i'll check your LINKS out.
unlovedwarrior: old =win98se(upgrade version) new=winxp-pro sp2.
truenorththrow the xp cd in and follow instruction for a complete reformat and install

make sure you have anything important backed up or else it will be lost for everunlovedwarrior,re your reply:1st thanks,2nd you might want to have a look at my post on the "computer software"(by far the most viewed=problems with sony vaio desktop) forum to see where this issue is coming from (particularly the last 2-3 posts).

I have read Calum's link (well the one re XP) and given that i am not concerned at all about lost data as this is but a stage that in essence was to 1st determine if i had a computer i could get to work (the other post will clarify that).

Now that i know it does work i am proceeding to the next phase ie. to actually get it configured the way i want.

When i was only intent on determining if it worked i was not trying to finess anything. Now i am.For instance currently the file system is fat32 and i will want ntsf also my 80gb harddrive is partitioned (not that i tried to do that) into 2 drives (C&D) but it is only registering about 16 gb on each. I sure don't want that (i want the aprox 80gb it is capable of).

So it is my impression to achieve this stuff i will need to do more than you suggest=ie.i think i will have to do an fdisk or whatever it is in xp.

I have already contacted the H/D mfgr. (Samsung) for a proper jumper pin setup as the one on the H/D does not agree with the one on their web site. I suspect that must be done properly BEFORE i do the rest or it will predjudice the results. I want to try and get this right the 1st time if i can. appreciate your help. truenorthQuote from: patio on May 08, 2007, 01:08:04 PM

Where's ME ? ? ?

Dead and buried in a hole, hopefully.
truenorth, your last post is a little hard to decipher.
Perhaps separating it out into paragraphs would help.Calum, as per your suggestion i have broken the post into what i hope are more chewable bits.Hope it adds clarity. truenorthYou can delete partitions and format hard drives from the XP disk.
Does the disk see the full capacity, or are you saying that it doesn't?
And yes, you will want the jumpers configured correctly before you start.Calum, Line 1 of your reply is very encouraging.
Line 2 Short answer=i am not sure. But let me provide some info that comes up at startup and perhaps the answer is in it.
On an early DOS page that comes at boot the following is stated under "Memory Test: 491520k OK+,32768K shared memory. I believe this is all about RAM memory but not sure?

However on the next DOS page the following is seen= PRI.Master Disk:80060MB (sure looks like an 80gb H/D figure to me) but again not sure.
Other info from that same page if it is relevant= UDMA 5,DRAM Type:DDR SDRAM,DRAM Mode 64 bit.

On your line 3 i do believe that i now have the jumpers set correctly for when i do the XP-Pro install. However i do realize that that even though i have repositioned the jumpers since i did the Win98se install that it will have no effect until i install a new operating system. The pins jumpered are "A" &"B" which coincidently is the exact same 2 pins that were jumpered on the SEAGATE H/D that was in the computer before i removed it and installed the SAMSUNG.Please do not feel any pressure to deal quickly with this issue as i do appreciate that all you generous "helpers" have other lives to lead. truenorth
Sorry, totally missed this post.
Yes, the part about memory is referring to RAM.
And 80060Mb seems right to me too.
Have you tried installing XP yet?
Where are you on this issue now?Calum,
Yes for some mysterious reason i too have had problems locating this post. I have gone as far as to page 13 (early April) to try and find it. The only time i see it appear is as in this case where there has been a "new" post. Strange!!!!
To answer your question --total success has been achieved.
i shall provide a copy of a post to the 2 other posts i have which have a relationship to my original post (however on different aspects) so as to provide the continuity to this post. If you have not done so reading the other 2 will bring it all together for you. One is "problems with Sony Vaio desktop" on the software forum and the other is "Coincident operating systems " on the windows forum. Hope this helps and thanks for your continued interest.

This will probably be my last post on this topic. However as there has been such a huge viewing of this post i feel duty bound to give you the final outcome of this EVENT. This reply is also posted in the "windows forum" as it relates to an issue also involving this same computer which as is stated here is also resolved.

This is an advisory to those that have posted on this thread and as well to those that may have viewed it and are awaiting a STATUS report.
1.While i have yet to overcome my wife's resistance to "fiddling " with her computer (the Cisnet) my natural couriosity obliged me to experiment with one of my own computers. A Sony Vaio model PCV-RXA 842.This computer and it's problems are related in CH "computer software" ""problem with Sony Vaio Desktop" .
2.Besides the generous help from the CH forum members i could not have achieved the success i have now without the additional help of 2 web sites http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_install.htm & http://www.le.ac.uk/cc/dsss/docs/w2kprob.shtml .
3. I now have a 3 partition 80gb H/D (Samsung) 2 C&D as FAT32 and a G as NTFS .
4.C CONTAINS the original O/S Win98se (upgrade) that finally got the computer running again and G contains the XP-pro (corporate edition).
5. I was initially getting a freeze at the "Windows Setup" again as i did in the other post i mentioned . This was the same problem that was occuring with the original Seagate H/D. This time i used a suggestion in the 'www.le.uk" site to press "F5" when the option to press "F6" comes up during the boot phase. This overcame the freeze and allowed me to complete the O/S (XP-pro) install to a successful result.
6.While i have NOT yet attemted an install to a removable H/D given this experience i do not envisage a problem as as long as the removeable is plugged in and recognized one should be able to direct the O/S install there.
7. In this instance i had to format and create a file sysyem on the 44gb of the Samsung H/D that was recognized but not formated (G). Once both were done it was there that i installed the XP-pro.
8. The only item remaining to declare "mission accompished" is to regain the use of the 80gb Seagate H/D originally installed in the Vaio. Thanks again to all of you that endeavored to assist me in these related issues. truenorth

OK, glad you got it SORTED and thanks for posting back.

Solve : HP computer?

Dual core means the CPU has two cores.
It will be up to twice as fast as a single core equivalent when doing more than one thing.
That's a fairly good CPU, but make sure yo get a socket AM2 rather than 939 one.
Also try for a faster one if possible.
XP Media Centre Edition, I advise you to ignore that unless you're after a media centre PC.
People who have it tend to complain about it a fair amount, go for a standard OS instead.Quote from: gordenLidy on MAY 26, 2007, 04:17:49 AM

what does it mean when it says Dual-Core

Ath64 X2 3800+ Dual-Core 1GB 200GB
It's basically two processors in one, to put it in simple terms. It's handy to have because, in my opinion, it tends to be more efficient. Dual-core is helpful if you do a lot of multitasking.

Solve : Music snips are unintelligable?

Goodmorning Everyone!! THANKS for being here!!

I am running windows xp 2002 version, I have been trying to listen to MUSIC snips offered by TimeLife 's Web site. They are too hesitant...isn't there a program or adjustment I can make so that the COMPUTER SAVES the snip and then I can play it like the regular music in Itunes?
Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <><

I went to TimeLife's site and had no problems with the sound. Does it happen with just that site / other sites / what are you using to listen to the sound clips / with a music CD / checked Device Manager - Sound for any problems?
Sorry Alan...I am new to this thing!! I have no problems playing music in any of the players, Real, windows media player, or itunes..... operating System?...Microsoft Windows.. service pack 2 on Windows XP. It has never worked....it stopps and starts playing it but I can't recieve it as fast as it needs to play it. I don't have any other problems...my AVG and Windows Defender, programs.
It does the same thing on any "streaming data" ie: movie clips, news, music. Time Life's web site , as you saw...has the little speaker you click on to listen...that was what I was trying to do...Try right clicking the icon on the site and choose "save target as" and point it to a folder of your CHOICE.
