Solve : Computer turning on by itself, blue screen automatically, etc?

Answer»

Alright, so I'm currently in Michigan but it seems like that my brother did something to my computer at home. So, it appears that when the computer turns on there's quickly this blue screen for less then a second and it's impossible for anyone to read it. I assumed it was the SMASH virus but I tried even activating the virus by getting my brother to turn off the computer as soon as he saw it but nothing happened. So there's this blue screen and then the computer screen goes black and restarts. This happens really quickly. Also, when the computer is off it's turning on by itself. I thought it might be something with the BIOS, but I couldn't figure out what options I do it with the BIOS. Any HELP? I'm figuring the only way out is to reformat the HDD but if that's the only OPTION then I'll just go ahead and send it into a pro to fix it up.Some information about the hardware, operating system, etc. could be helpful. If you haven't changed anything in the BIOS (and he hasn't) then that is not the place to start.

See below. Windows XP BUSINESS edition. It's not genuine. Hardware.. mmm.. HDD is 80GB Seagate Barracuda.. running an AMD Sempron 64 3000+ Socket 754.. Mobo I do not remember unfortunately. 2 512MB sticks of Kingston RAM DDR400 (PC3200). The video card is EVGA but I can't remember what model.

That's as much as I can remember. I have on CD drive and I've had no past problems before. I don't have my windows firewall up but I do have a firewall in my router. The problem is the first time ever. My computer has never randomly shut down or randomly turned on. My brothers activity is limited to Guild Wars MMORPG and some internet surfing. I use limewire pro for music. I use firefox as my web browser. and that's it.Quote from: Raferalston26 on May 20, 2007, 07:38:47 PM

Windows XP business edition. It's not genuine.

I suspect this to be a major part of your problem. Unfortunately, we don't deal with illegal copies of Windows. Everyone needs a genuine copy of Windows sooner or later, and it appears to be sooner in your case.

(How's that, GX1_Man? Heh.)Perfect, CHRIS. Also, Limewire for music.

Get out of my shop you dirty pirate. So, if he hadn't mentioned he had a pirated copy of XP, you would have helped him?

The Windows license calls for one purchased CD for one machine. It will be non-functional in 30 days, or your friend's will be, or both, once it is activated. It doesn't say in the EULA that you can use your friend's copy. Interesting.

As this is a public forum, one of the Administrator's requirements, and he is the boss, is that we do not help with warez, etc. Don't like that? There are some forums that don't care, but this is not one of them.

Solve : XP wont install on a new hdd?

Answer»

The old hdd died so I installed a replacement - making sure it was primary master, but the xp os cd will not even start to install. I've made the cd player the first boot option in bios & bios sees the new hdd. It's also partitioned & formatted but after startup & POST the system keeps saying PRESS any key to reboot. The cd player light flashes, so the cd is moving. Any ideas? What did you use to partition and format the drive ? ?
How are your partitions set up ? ?
Did you remember to set the first partition as active ? ?Used another pc running the same os.

Single partition – 40GB – “Basic” type NTFS. The other pc says that it’s “Healthy (Active)” – so yes the partition is active.

Since I removed the hdd to check it on the other pc & reinstalled it, it now says
“NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart”. When I do the same message appears again.
You cannot swap around hard drives from one machine to another with XP...this will almost ALWAYS cause chaos...

At this point i believe you need to start over with a few suggestions;

1) The HDD needs to be in your machine for XP to ever run properly...even for the install.

2) The drive manuf. utilities are a very good way to prep a drive for an OS install. If you didn't recieve a CD with that drive DLoad them from the appropiate drive manuf. website.

3) In the drive utilities make sure the drive is set to an " active" partition and re-format the ENTIRE drive.

4) Then insert your XP CD and re-boot the machine and the install should run...I downloaded the correct HDD software from the manufacturer, burnt a CD using Nero & followed their instructions but I still get the “NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart”. When I do the same message appears again.
The correct cables are plugged into the HDD & CD Drive from the mother board & the jumpers are set to primary master & secondary master respectively.
If you are getting an NYLDR message when booting then the drive is not empty...probably leftovers from a botched install...boot with the manuf,CD and format the drive again.
Then put in your XP CD and re-boot
Does the installation start ? ?SORRY for the delay in answering, I have to work strange hours. I keep getting the same message i.e. “NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart” using the correct manufacturer’s file “DLG_V11_2.iso”.Revisit This Site and follow the instructions to BURN that file to a bootable CD...you have copied the file to a CD which will never work.
They have instructions for most burning apps including Nero...

Solve : Windows XP lock out?

Answer»

I am running this OS, and have relocated the unit. Now its boots with me as the user, but when I try to open any program it gives me "can not find the file / not authorized to view" or SOMETHING to that effect.
Help ! what do I do?
Thanks Bob What OS ? ?
What unit ? ?
What does RELOCATION MEAN ? ?

Give us more to go on...This machine has Windows XP / Compaq 2.6GHZ. I have move to a new office and naturally it was unplugged. I have tried to set up again, as I said it will boot, recoginize me as the user, but will not allow me to access any program with error message "Can't file the file"may be authorized to access"
Any help will be DEEPLY appreciated.Do you access programs through the network at the office or they residing on your machine ? ?
Was the machine shut down properly before being moved ? ?
Is there an IT person at this office ? ? He may just have to re-enable your permissions on that machine.Thank you for taking the time to respond to me.
I am a private businessman and do not have access to IT.
All programs are on the machine, and Windows was loaded on at purchase, so I don't have a copy to reinstall the OS.
It was properly shut down at the move.
Any ideas?
Thanks again!Have you tried any of the suggestions at the below site?

Solve : Desktop opens new desktop when right click with mouse?

Answer»

History: Drive C: is using a MSDOS program with the config from Windows 98. Drive d: is using windows 2000 upgrade over windows 98. SP4 has been installed for windows 2000.

The desktop icons work as they are suppose to, however, after I get the program up and want to exit when I click on "File" the program is shutdown. Just as if I had clicked on the "x". Another issue is that when I wanted to add a shortcut to the desktop right clicking on the desktop pulls up another desktop. I cannot use the right click function at the desktop. Any suggestions? Are you saying you have a dual-boot setup ? ?
Win98 on C: and Win2K on D: ? ?
If so where is the DOS program installed to C: or D: or both ? ?

Since Win2K is NT based this may be why it won't run properly on Win2K

Boot to Win2K on D:
Open Windows Explorer and find the .exe for the DOS program wherever it is installed.
Right click it and choose "create shortcut". Then drag it to a blank area on the current Win2K desktop.
Re-boot; right click the new shortcut and set all the program properties the same way you have them for Win98...

See if this helps. Thanks for the reply. After re-reading my original post I see that there might be some confusion in my statement. My dos program resides on C:/. The dos program operates the way it is suppose to. When running Windows 98 I needed some dos residing on C:/. I copy/paste the config.sys which included ECB to the c: drive and placed it in a folder named dos and it worked fine for all this time. This being my first try on Windows 2000 to make this system work I left the c: drive alone hoping the program would work ok and it does.

During install I clicked on the option to use two operating systems and not to use ntfs. In windows 2000 if I left click on an icon on the desktop (say windows explorer) the program will come up without any problem. When I click on "file" the program will shutdown as if I click the "x" and send me back to my desktop. If I right click on my desktop to add a shortcut the desktop will then reload. So I cannot right click at all on the desktop I havent tried it anywhere else. The problem with the "file" button only showed up after I installed SP4.

Windows 2000 does a dual boot giving me a choice of which system I want to use. The original purpose for MATING the two systems(98) was to give the capability of saving a history file to cd's for the possible viewing at another time. I could tweak the program enough to get it to do what we wanted. I am very close to retiring and I am trying to give this system a little more life. The company depends on it. I am concerned that a newer operating system would be better as the computers that are being bought now even use usb keyboards which I couldnt get to work. I even used a usb to ps/2 adapter for the keyboard and mouse and the keyboard wouldnt work. I dont know what I will do when I cannot get ps/2 any more? Right now I am using the older models that are replaced with the newer computers. The older models are ps/2. chuckQuote

I would try this method for now...remove any existing shortcut for the app in Win2K

In the meantime i'll do a little more research but i suspect it will take some finagling since Win2K is NT based. And i'm assuming there is an install of DOS underneath that Win98 partition.

Be patient.

BTW Chuck, what app is this ? ?This may be helpful. Thanks for your interest. The application is "Simplex History Recording Terminal". It monitors all of the alarms, troubles that come across our Fire Alarm System. I have two such units with multiple terminals attached. The system functions fine with Windows 98. I have had the system working with Windows 2000 with some minor problems. I examined the desktop problem and the windows explorer problem a little more last night. When I have windows explorer opened the "file" is the only part of the status bar that doesnt function properly I just dont get it. I have had the system working like it was suppose to with minor problems with the dos application. When I boot up into dos I stop at c: prompt instead of continuing into the program and activating the .exe to bring the program up. When I stop at C: the message says that I am using automatic configuration files and that my autoexec and config files have been renamed autoexec.upg and config.upg. Thest files reside in a folder that windows 2000 created called dos7. I changed the files back to autoexec.bat and config.sys but nothing has changed. I moved them to the c: prompt like the original app would have them and still nothing. I searched for the dos ,exe in windows and could not find it anywhere. I looked into autoexec.nt and config.nt and found that the dos startup file had been added but still it will not boot up into the program. I changed the default at bootup so that the dos o/s would boot first. When I get to the c: prompt I can type in the .exe and the program boots up like it is suppose to. With windows being ustable the way it is I am going to reload the dos program and windows 2000 tonight and see if a fresh install on both will help. Thank you for your time on this project....chuckThey need to be incorporated into the autoexec.nt and config.nt files in the root directory...not the Windows directory for this to work...

Make sure to backup your originals.

p.s. This may not work without an install of DOS under Win2k which i doubt you have...

You could always try an install of FreeDos on top of Win2K but this may get a bit messy. Thanks I will give it a try tomorrow...chuckI was unable to find any reference to this application...do you know who the author is ? ?The software was created by the "Simplex Fire Alarm Company" that we received about 1985. At that time it ran on dos 6.0. We ran it this way for a long time. The software allows the user to record all the history that comes across the fire alarm system. The user can then run all kinds of reports for their use. I started expiermenting with what I could do with the software that the company does not support anymore around 2000. Using floppys for the recording material of the history at times for unknown reasons it wouldnt except the floppy and cancel the DOWNLOAD. At that time there was no provision to start the process again. I thought that if I could use cd's it would be a better media and the better storage. So thats what started this. I could not get AHOLD of the source CODE but there were a number of .bat files that I could work with. The first thing I did was force a copy of the two data programs that we use all the time. By copying these two files to c: no matter what happened then I could work with them. I was able to mate windows 98 and make the systems work well together. My purpose now is to get windows 2000 working with the system and maybe xp. We are using 2000 on all our computers and xp is starting to used as the next genration of o/s. I am afraid that in the near future that 98 will be droped from video and cd burners that I need in this process like 95 has been. Just want to do the best for the company that I can for they are not ready to get rid of this program. Retirement is just around the corner....thanks for you concern.....chuck

Solve : Error using Outlook with Yahoo Email Address?

Answer»

I have been using Outlook with Yahoo for over a year now, and recently became unable to send outgoing emails. I recieved the error written below and have been unable to find helpful information. There is no problem with my internet connection, and the website it offers provides no assistance at all. There are also no messages in my outbox, and in an attempt to fix the problem I also deleted all 'sent messages'. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Task 'Yahoo Mail - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was INTERRUPTED. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: 553 From: address not verified; see http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/edit/alternate_email/index.html'Do you pay for your yahoo account?

I think they've changed things so you can't use a mail client unless you pay for you email address...I don't pay for it, but I don't think i have to. i know hotmail has changed their accounts and you have to pay, but not yahoo. i can still recieve messages as well, its just getting blocked up when i send them.
Try changing your outgoing port from 25 to 80. 25 is the default SMTP port and 80 is the one you use to get on the Internet.

I have the same problem with AT&T as they upgraded me and after that I can't send from Outlook. I've switched to Thunderbird and don't have any problems.

Alan <>< If i wanted to change my outgoing port, how would I? Do i have to call my ISP?
No.

Outlook/Tools/EmailAccounts/Next/choose your account/Change/More Settings/Advanced. Here is where you make your change.

Alan <>< Alan thanks for your help. i have made the change and am still not sure if it has worked.

My outlook keeps saying 'sending message 1 of 3' and then fails to send. i can recieve emails no problem.
I would simply like to cancel those messages permanently, but cannot seem to. There are no messages in my outbox or sent items.
Any ideas how I could go about deleting them? Or is there anyway to find out which messages they are/ who they are to? Until these 3 are gone I cannot really be sure that things are GOING well.

Thanks for your help anyone.

Solve : HIMEM hates me?

Answer»

My computer, running Windows 98, told me that HIMEM detected unreliable XMS memory at whatever address. It said "XMS driver not installed," which if my understanding is correct, contradicts itself. After the XMS driver (himem.sys) gave me results and made me ANGRY, it said it wasn't there (even later telling me specifically that himem.sys couldn't be FOUND, go figure). So, to fix the problem (as in, make it work, not like how the vet fixed my dog) I made config.sys say the following:
Code: [Select]device=c:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe v
emmexclude 04000046h
It STILL can't find HIMEM (and yes, it's in my windows directory...), and it tells me that the same memory address (the above mentioned was an approximation from memory and there are 3 or 4 lines of bad memory addresses) is unreliable. I'm getting kind of frustrated, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for any help.Never heard of this problem.

Yeah, DIAGNOSING it.

Paying attention is a MUST on CH. Hey, my computer maintenance teacher told me what I was doing wrong. He said to use EMMEXCLUDE as a switch, and shorten it to plain old /X. Problem is, during the hours I spent in school, I forgot the syntax for listing the memory addresses. If anyone knows, I'd greatly appreciate it if you shared your knowledge. In the meantime, I'll ATTEMPT to fix it through trial and error. Thanks for all the suggestions and effort.Try this one instead:

device=c:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe
REM emmexclude 04000046h
How would I do that to exclude all of the following:
04000036h
04000046h
0400002Ch
0400003Ch

Would I need to use them as a range, a list, or 4 separate lines?Ignore that part. Don't exclude anything. If I don't exclude the bad memory, what do I do instead?

Solve : XP Media Center vs XP Home/Which uses more processor power??

Answer»

My new Gateway computer will have XP Media Center installed. XP Home is not offered by Gateway.
I have no use for the Media Center Application. I Will NEVER attach a TV to a Computer. SOBER anyway.

This computer will be used for gaming and needs as much power as possible. Does Media Center use more
of the computer resources than XP Home/Pro? (This is not about hardware such as Video Cards and PROCESSORS but the Operating System.)

Should I switch operating systems to XP Home/Pro or just NOT use the Media Center Application?
Can the Media Center Application be disabled so it doesn't use any computer resources?
Is this even something WORTH worrying about? What could be gained by switching to XP Home or Pro?

New computer will have: Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core Processor QX6700 3.20Ghz
Intel 975X Chipset
4Gb Ram
300Gb Sata Hard Drive
Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX 766mb Video Card

Thank You in advance.

Media Center is the actual operating system therefore it can't be turned on/off...
There are features that can be disabled as in any OS...
Why not ask Compaq if XPPro is an option ? ?With all of that horsepower, either will do just fine.As has been said, it will not make a difference.
If the OS bothers you, get a DIFFERENT one.
BTW - seriously nice PC.
Can I have it?

Solve : Control Panel Gone Wild!!?

Answer»

Yesterday 2 of you stuck and helped me get my Control Panel back. The actual answer was the Registry Edit changing from 1 to 0. Now I still have a control panel problem that is just as bad as not have one. Whenever I start the control panel from the start menu I immediately get a popup that says:

"Window Explorer has ENCOUNTERED a problem and needs to close. We are sorry...blah, blah." It asks if I want to send an error message to Microsoft and I always way YES. I figgure If they get enough one one kind of error message they will pay attention to it.

I am running a 3Mhz, dual pententium IV system with 1GB of Ram and 2 160GB hard drives with Windows XPSP2 Professional and have had this configuration for about 2 YEARS without any modifications with the exception of adding a second drive about 1 year ago. I have Norton/Symantic total package( sorry about that ), Webroot and have tried various other products to root these problems out. At the suggestion from someone yesterday I downloaded and ran 'Registry Mechanic'. It sure found problems, but now claims that all are fixed.

So far, everything else I've tested seems to run OK, but I do need my control panel to work so I can get RID of some stuff--like Norton, plus makes some tweaks for my work. By the way it's a stand-alone system with broadband and Voanage.

Like always, any help will be much appreciated as I am an independent programming developer and don't have many computer savy people to talk to.

Dave

Couple of my friends told me I was lucky to get anything at all off the old drive. Again, I don't know if this is the same problem you are facing since I am a total noob but if you got a $$$$ program, it might be worth it to go buy a hard drive and see if it works..if it doesn't, you just got a new harddrive for later.Quote from: life2atreus on May 27, 2007, 05:15:14 AM

Solve : Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005?

I have never used windows xp media center is it any good???

can you upgrade to windows xp home with it....I've never used it, but I ADVISE going for the standard Home or Pro editions instead.
Quote

can you upgrade to windows xp home with it....
What do you mean by that?XP MCE is not a valid upgrade PRODUCT to XP Home as it was released afterwards. Are you wanting to upgrade to Media Center? I am UNSURE what you are TRYING to accomplish. Which product do you have?I am shopping for a new computer may be a dell or an hp. ALOT of the computers i have looked at have the media center on it.

i was just wondering if i can put windows xp pro or home over media center....Dell is still selling computers with XP Pro. Why not just get what you want from the start?

Solve : wierd video playback problem?

Answer»

ok im on xp 64 bit on a amd athlon 3800+ 64 bit dual core. asustek am2nv3-vsta mobo, (nforce 3, latest forceware (6.25) crashes it so its on whatever came with it) nvidia geforce 7600 gs on agp 512 mb (stupid tech support left the wrong mem module in! sort that out on tuesday) ddr2 667 ram,

problem is, (occurs with vlc, window media 6.4 and windows media 11, and i assume, most others) whenever i play a video of any type, the refresh rate drops to nothing, i can see the buttons being drawn piece by piece and the screen GOES black at random till i manage to end process on it (after a while) then its mostly back to normal except the buttons like the close and minimize stay black in all windows till restart.

ive tried various codecs, to no AVAIL....

windows itsself can display a frame of the video for a THUMBNAIL but i dont EVEN get a single frame of video when i playback, i do get mostly alright sound though.

edut ----

i know its not a cpu issue, i set the affinity and the prioirty to cpu 0 and low that left a spare cpu to handle the REST and it should have prioritiesed the rest anyway, so my thinking is something, somewhere is sending un-translatable commands to the video card...

p.s. that runs tom clancy splinter cell double agent fine, no issuesWould this be of any benefit to you?

Solve : Task Bar Problems re-posted?

Answer»

I have re posted the problem below in the hope smeone new migh have an idea.

I have just GOT two new, to me, PC's, both with XP PROFESSIONAL but two different CD's, one for the Dell and one for the Compaq.

The Dell system works perfectly, my applications when I run them appear in the task bar at the bottom next to the quick launch items, and stay there when I minimise them.

On the Compaq system I can not get the applications to SHOW in the taskbar unless I switch off the quick launch toolbar and in adition I can not see all the items that are in the RIGHT hand corner of the task bar, I have to unlock it and expand it upwards to see them all.

Presumably I am doing something stupid but would appreciate some advice.

Solve : tar.gz with windows??

Answer»

I have audacity, an audio program that says it NEEDS LAME library, a .gz file for mp3 encoding. Is it possible on a WINDOWS? I don't have the appropriate program to use that file I think. The help SECTION says it's a Linux type file? I tried a couple archive programs, but it didn't make it compatible with my computer. It just backed it up or something? StuffIt and Winace, I think. It's a compressed file, so I NEED to get something out of it, right?http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&i=lame-mp3

Solve : Can't uninstall SP2.?

Answer»

I recently installed SP2. i was reluctant to do so from the beginning because ive heard it may cause problems, but others assured me it only happened to a small percentage of people. i guess i was in that small percentage because when i installed it i had some problems. my firefox browser wouldnt load any pages. i had the "problem loading the page" error. im sure it wasnt my net connection because i was able to connect online with other apps.

i checked the Windows firewall to allow firefox to access the net it still didnt work. so i disabled the firewall temporarily and it still didnt work.

so i decided to uninstall SP2. i found it on the add/remove programs list and successfully uninstalled. but then and i admit i was tired and wasnt thinking clearly and i did a system restore. it restored my system back and SP2 was installed again. so i then proceeded to uninstall it again from the add/remove programs list. when i selected to remove SP2 an error message came up and said something like "Windows SP2 may have been uninstalled already, do you want to remove it from the list?".

so now theres no option in add/remove programs list to uninstall it. i tried RESTORING to a restore point from when i first installed SP2, but system restore says it couldnt restore it to that point.

i tried reinstalling it but it isnt in the Windows Update list. i had downloaded the "Windows XP SP2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers" earlier and still had it on my computer. so i tried installing that in hopes that it would be on the add/remove list but its not.

so now i need to know if theres another way to uninstall SP2 besides having to reformat? i havent tried loading windows up in safe mode yet to see if its on the list, ill try that tomorrow.

to think of it, if there is no way to uninstall it or you'd advise against it then if you can FIX my original problem of firefox browser not being able to load a webpage (IE cant either) then ill just keep SP2 installed. that problem was why i uninstalled SP2 in the first place.

Computer Specs:
-Gateway 510 Series
-WinXP
-Pen 4 2.80Ghz
-512mb RAM
-NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
-Adware/Spyware/Virus Protection used regularly are Ad-aware, NOD32 and Norton AV 2003.

also i dont know if this has anything to do with SP2 or just coincidence but my HP PSC 2310 printer cant print or scan anything. i get an error message when trying to print. i tried reinstalling drivers. the last time i printed something successfully was before i installed SP2.

any help would be greatly appreciatedQuote from: Jerry_03 on May 25, 2007, 06:32:10 AM

I have to wonder exactly what the status of your system is now, after all that you did. And, yes, dealing DIRECTLY with the Firefox issue in the first place would have been the best thing to do.

Does Internet Explorer work? Are you using that computer online to when using this forum?

I suggest you uninstall Firefox. Then, download and install CCleaner. When you install it, I suggest you elect not to install the Yahoo toolbar that comes with it; you'll see the option soon after the installation STARTS. Run it Windows scan and Issues scan and remove everything it finds. This Issues scan will ask you if you want backup your registry before removing the items it found. Do so, and then proceed with deleting the items. Repeat the Issues scan since it sometimes finds ADDITIONAL items upon repeat scans.

Now, reinstall Firefox. Is it working?I doubt that SP2 is the root cause of the issue here...you should re-check all your network settings to see if they are correct.
Is there a reason you used the Network install package for SP2 ? ?Quote from: soybean on May 25, 2007, 09:33:39 AM

Solve : Windows startup stalled???

Answer»

OK well I finally GOT to go over there, the disk she had was not like the one you showed me, it was the Toshiba recovery disk, and it totally TOOK the comp back to out of box.
BUT it was OK with her, she just wanted a working computer. So thats all solved
And now I am having more problems with the same laptop you helped me with before.
Its freezing up and doing the not -responding thing, on multiple programs. I run CCleaner daily, and Super-anti spyware, Malwarebytes Anti Malware, AVG Free Anti-virus, and AVG antispyware weekly. All on different days. Nothing EVER COMES up.
Well today I couldn't even stay on long enough to DO anything, nothing would close, kept getting the box "such and such is not responding, blah blah blah" I had to power the comp down using the button. Hate doing that.
So I ran online Panda, came back having 16 malwares. So now I need HELP getting them gone. Also I was going thru my programs, seeing if anything needed to be removed, I tried to remove the freeze.com toolbar. All it would do is blink the screen at me. Tried removing it using the Ccleaner, no RESPONSE. So *censored*. Do you want me to start a new thread?Yeah, that's gone be the best way.

I do not wanna buy a full upgrade of Windows Vista when I can just upgrade from Windows XP for cheaper.Let me see if I understand this correctly. Solve : Magically reappearing folder??

A few WEEKS ago I burned a cd for a FRIEND to mail to a friend of hers back east. When I ripped the songs off of my friend's cds, I put them in a seperate folder on my desktop so as not to mix them up with my music FILES (it wasn't my kind of music, lol). So anyway, I burned the cd and deleted the folder, but now, for some REASON, every time I open Windows Media Player, the folder I put all the songs in reappears on my desktop (albeit empty). Why does this happen, and how do I get it to stop?It SAVES burns as a project/playlist...

Solve : how did this new HD shrink so fast ??

Answer»

I recently pulled OEM 60 GB HD from Compaq Presario 2110US, and installed a new Toshiba 120 GB HD. I used the original Compaq CD for installing Windows XP SP1, then patiently worked through every *% update to get the entire SP2 and eternal fixes.
I set up the HD with NTFS or whatever the initials are, instead of FAT32. For some reason I am already getting a "low on disk space" message. I checked the hard drive size TWO different ways and it states the size is 10.1 GB.

"Help, my HD size is falling and it can't get back up!"

I checked the Microsoft site for the above error message and it suggested entering a "diskpart add" command in DOS, but that has changed nothing AND "the DOS SCREEN said something about "this is not a command" or some such malarkey.

I don't want to reformat the entire drive and then spend hours reinstalling XP Service Pack 2+Infinity.

A virus did not do this as I have been running checks with two programs and haven't installed much so far. Everything has come up clean.

Ideas, anyone?

I'm lost in the Windows Fog again" to paraphrase an old song.

thanks

It could be a bad drive. It should hopefully be under warrenty I would send it to the manufacture an see what they wouldnt do.1. Disk Management Utility. Use the disk management utility to view how that disk has been partitioned. Select Start -> Run -> type "diskmgmt.msc" and hit enter. Bottom half of window should show it as 'Drive 0". It probably shows over 100 GBytes of unallocated space. If this is true, the software provided by Microsoft will not let you make the existing system and/or boot volume(s) larger without reloading. You'd have to use third party software to do this.

The windows software will however permit you to create additional volumes out of the unallocated space.

How big does Disk Management think your "C:" drive is?

2. Compaq CD. Is this a "Recovery CD" which automatically restores your disk and software to the state it was delivered? Well, the jury considered all the evidence and determined that I failed the HD IQ test.

Thanks, dahlarbear, you were on the money with your reply.

The Disk Management Utility did show I also have a drive "E" which has 100 free GB and no formatting (neither NTFS nor FAT32). I kinda remember that when I set up this new HD (which is a Seagate, by the way), I formatted only a partial chunk of the 120 with NTFS. I guess that was the 10GB that now my system believes is running low.

Now the challenge is to lump these two together as one, under the NTFS. I will take on that challenge next.

THANKS AGAIN.You can resize your small partition to take advantage of all the unpartitioned space with a partition manager.
Gparted is a very powerful partition manager that also happens to be free.
Download the LiveCD version from here.
Burn it to a CD as an image. (Don't burn it as a regular data disc.)
Reboot the computer with the disc in the drive, GParted should start.

Remember to backup your data before using a partition manager. Although it shouldn't delete your data it is better to be safe than sorry.

Solve : Found New Hardware Wizard?

Answer»

Hello,

I installed a Fisher-Price kids game that connects via a USB port. After uninstalling the program via "add/remove software", every time CPU is rebooted the "found new hardware wizard" begins and a pop-up window from the system tray states "unable to complete installation of other PCI Bridge DEVICE". I close these 2 warnings down and carry on as usual but I am frustrated with having to do so.

Start/control panel/system/hardware/device manager/SCSI and RAID controllers shows a "other PCI Bridge Device" with a red x over the small icon. I have right clicked and attempted to delete, and have right clicked and disabled, both multiple times, yet every reboot the same thing happens.

Averatec laptop w xp service pack 2, amd sempron 3300, 500 Ram, blahahblah

Thanks in advance............Is the game still plugged in?
Hi,

Thanks for replying, no the game is not plugged in, nor has it been for over 5 months. My wife tells me the same thing has been happening at startup ever since day one the software was installed on the cpu. I have TRIED to reinstall then uninstall with and without the disk and with windows xp to no AVAIL- its LIKE the cpu is still trying to connect to the game even though its not their and I have uninstalled the games software. Could this be a corrupt or incomplete driver still lurking?I have had this PROBLEM before after a remove. I went to search for the file and found some still lurking and deleted from there and solved the problem.I have very limited knowledge of how to find these hidden files, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated-click on start, then click search, click c drive and all files and folders including hidden. Then type in name of program and hit enter.

Who set up your network? They should know what the key is. I don't recommend you setup your router to not ask for a key, as this leaves your network open to anyone within reach of it.It is a dell latitude laptop, windows xp. linksys wireless -g broadband router, we set up avast anti-virus,as for the router, my husband hooked it up so i dont know...
We are using a linksys wireless-g notebook adapter card. I pulled up the linksys info.

Brand and model of wireless router

dell latitude laptop, windows xp home edition version 2002 service pack 2, linksys wireless -g broadband router wrt54gWhat is the model number of the laptop?

Anyway, since your husband set up the network, he should know what the security key is.Without the 'key' your not going to connect. You, or your husband, need to a) put in the right key or b) look in the router for the key.

If he didn't set up the router fancy-like you should be able to open a browser / at the URL line type 192.168.0.1 (I believe that's the DEFAULT IP for the router). If I remember right with Linksys the username is admin and the password is password. If you get that far then somewhere in the router settings (Security) you should be able to find that passphrase/key/whatever.

Alan <>< there should be a passphrase saved in notepad under linksys and the default password for the router homepage is admin and type that in password area of the log on box only Hi chellenc68
Here is how you solve the PROBLEM:
connect a computer using a network cable to the router. Linksys comes always with a CD, INSERT the CD into this computer. Follow the on-screen directions for setup. You will reach to a point where it asks for security code to CHOOSE. You choose any thing you like based on the suggestion of the router.

Once you are DONE. you can disconnect this computer from the router and turn the laptop. Using your security code, you can get connected.

Please write me if this doesn't solve the problem.

Solve : Installing HD with XP?

I have a CUSTOM built machine w/ Vista on it. I want to put an HD in it to replace the drive with Vista, with one that has XP. Will this work? My machine has two drives, one 80Gb for the OS, and a 320GB for storage. Its a evga 680i MB, & 3 Mhz duo core processor, with 4 Gb of ram, and a nvida 8800 GT video CARD w/ 512M of ram.Sure it will work. As LONG as you reinstall XP.

The operating system is married to the machine hardware. You can't swap drives around on machines UNLESS the drive was used to install XP on that machine.

when i saw the ping options and tryed by using -j & -k it shown the it was a "bad option".... please tell me how can i know which os version using by using ping command....from the help (ping /?),
A. I find,in my opinion, the -j and -k can not be used in one command line.
B. the "host-list" parameter -j or -k is a string of ipaddress (DECIMAL with dot) or HOSTNAME .They use space to part with each other like this:

> ping -j 10.10.10.1 10.20.20.1 10.30.30.1

C. the host-list mean a chain of routers, and the LAST is the destination Host(hostname or ipaddress)

D. the Ping command can not get the host system type.

you can try "TELNET" or "ftp"
you can get some infos from the welcome message !!!

Solve : can't boot from windows disk?

Answer»

I had a problem, which was unresolved (computer freezes after 1 min of being on in normal or safe mode, or just at the LOG in screen) and it became apparent that I would have to repair windows USING the original disk. I put the disk in and restarted the machine, was told windows was going to boot from the disk, then after 1 min like before, while still loading from the windows disk (an actual copy at that) it froze. Windows itself has not even started, but was still in the loading phases. How can I then repair windows?
Oh and I'm pentium 4, 512 ram, windows xp (up to date), 256+ G of memory and 60G's freeDid you try system restore when this problem first started and if so what happened. Sounds like corrupted file to me.Oh yeah do you have a boot up disk and if so have you tried it. You can download one from:support.microsoft.com/KB/314503 -I just NOTICED you were on earlier TODAY. Did you follow those instructions? If so what were the results?

the administration staff and manager will access this system via an initial system entry screen with a password- this will give access to a main menu screen. the main menu will provide a choice of access to the following screens:

d. add/delete institution
e. update institution details
f. add request for nurse

Solve : Blinking Text in Batch File - Win XP?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a TYPICAL requirement. There's a batch file of MINE that keeps running checking some servers (by pinging them). If any SERVER is down, the batch file sends an email to the administrator. It also displays the list of servers and their current state on the command window. The requirement now is that for the server which is down, the text should blink while others should be displayed the normal way.
For e.g.,
Server1 : State is Running
Server2 : State is Running
Server3 : State is Not Running ----- Only this line should blink
Server4 : State is Running

Is it POSSIBLE to achieve this in WINDOWS XP? I do not have any idea of the command to be used in the batch file to achieve the same.

Thanks
Satish.

Solve : My dad's hibernation doesn't work properly! Why? ????

Answer»

It's my dad's computer HIBERNATION not my dad himself ALTHOUGH I would love that!
If my dad's computer "restarts" after I used the hibernation way to shutdown his PC I always GET the welcome screen.
Why?
I don't want it.
How can I prevent the computer from doing this?
I know I have a lot of questions sorry for that.
Computer info:
Windows XP professional SP2
256MB RAM
1.5GHz mono core processor.

Thanks in advance Jonas. Is your Dad going to be pleased your trying to make adjustents on his computer?Yes afcourse he asked me to.
Otherwise I wouldn't do that. This is a very minor ISSUE, isn't it?Yes but it is ignoring.
And I would like to know how I can prevent it.
You don't have to answer if you find this an irrelevant question.

Pls help...

THanks n REGARDS,
More details, please. Your OS? Some hardware info (memory, hard drive size and free space). Did you make some software or hardware change to your system just before this started? By "opening any folder", do you mean using Windows Explorer?

Also, what protections are you using for viruses, spyware, etc.?Hi

Windows XP pro, Memory sufficient.
By opening any folder like "my documents" or any sub folder.

Symantic.Have you noticed that the pc clock is out of sync? Googled your error message and came up with the PROBLEM being associated with the bios battery...

Sounds bit weird but.....

Thanks!!

I had noticed that there is one extra .dll in sys32 file which was causing for that, what i found manually matching with other SYSTEMS sys32 file. I had removed and problem solved.

Is the way to find above automatically?

Thanks !!

Solve : Increasing No. of Clipboard.?

Answer»

Hi Everybody!!

The clipboard is available 1-24 no., How Could it be INCREASED ??

Thanks
JayWhat clipboard are you talking about? Windows clipboard only retains one thing at a time.Soybean is correct...

Addon clipboards are the only ones that have this ability such as Yankee Clipper or Clip Mate.It sounds to me like they're talking about the MS Office clipboard.
If I recall correctly, that could have up to 24 items on it.
I could be wrong though.
If it is the MS Office clipboard, I have absolutely no idea as I don't use MS Office at all.I use a nice EXTENSION for FireFox called QuickNote...you can copy and save as MANY items as you want on seperate pages.

Handy !Quote from: Calum on April 07, 2007, 08:37:51 AM

Yes!! I am talking about MS Office clipboard !It can be increased by editing REGISTRY but i don't know.
I think use of clipboard is other than MS Office also.

Thanks
JayanandI did some searching but found no reference on modifying the number of items the Office clipboard holds. If this were a known procedure, it would probably be documented and could be found via search engines (Google, etc.).

Clicking on an item in the Office clipboard puts that item in the Windows clipboard. Otherwise, the Office clipboard does not carry over to other applications.Ok, Thank you!!

Thanks!!

Solve : My Monitor Doesn't Come On Anymore...?

Answer» HELLO all,

Was wondering if anyone is familiar with this problem? When I turn my computer on, the monitor simply doesn't load up anymore. I press the button to turn it on and it comes up with the message "No SIGNAL input or cable disconnected". The monitor is plugged in and all the cables are plugged in where they should be. I have removed them and reconnected them and nothing happens.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

EDIT: It may also be worth mentioning that I've had this computer for 5 and a half years and had a string of problems with it... It has SPENT more time in repair than with me. Specialists have even struggled with it at times. It used to be Windows ME but was upgraded to Windows XP. Have you tried another video card,or monitor,or both?

How does the monitor work on another computer?Hello,

I haven't tried a video card... to be honest, I'm not that up on computers so I'd probably struggle with that! I haven't tried another monitor. I don't really want to get one unless there is no way I can fix it. I'm on my sister's laptop at the moment, but I only have it for 3 weeks.Does your sisters laptop have an OUTLET for an external monitor?

So, you could CHECK yours? If that works the monitor ain't bad.

Alternatively check your monitor on a friends computer.Yeah, like their refering to your video card or your moniter, the only way to weed it out is to test the moniter on anouther computer. Obviusly if it works on the other computer the moniter is fine and you need a new video card.
