Solve : Broken XP-Pro?

Answer»

Will try not to be verbose. I created a problem on my XP-Pro machine by starting to create an RAID 0 array on the two identical HD,s and realized that config would distroy all of the data on both drives. Bailed out an am left with a machine boots fine, all programs work fine but I have no MMC , Taskmanager or sound. Is there any hope in salvageing this without distroying everything. Tnx.Do you have a shiny CD that says Microsoft all over it ? ?

If so go to Start/Run and TYPE in SFC /scannow and hit Enter.

If this doesn't work post back and we'll give you the steps for a repair INSTALL...an XP CD is neccessary for this as well.SFC finds no problems. Did not have to replace any files. Have XP-Pro on CD.Good

Repair Install of XP

I suggest printing it out for reference and reading it FIRST especially the Caution notes...

In most cases if followed correctly XP will be back to normal and your programs and data should be intact.

Since a near miss is still fresh in your mind it would be a good time to consider developing a backup strategy.Tnx fr help. Had a great backup system going with Casper. I mirrored the entire C: drive to the D: once a week but blew them both up at the same time with the RAID issue. Tnx.Change your strategy just a tad and burn at least one image a MONTH to CD/DVD...does Casper support this ? ?Yes it does.Slick prog.

Thanks. I tried but it didn't work Boot into Safe Mode (tap the F8 key when you boot) \ go into DEVICE Manager (it's in Control Panel) / click on the + next to Sound & uninstall all the drivers / reboot. Windows should reinstall the drivers. Make sure you have your Windows CD handy, as well as the cd for the sound card (be it built on the motherboard or in a PCI slot) just in CASE

Solve : Moved folder -lost data -recovery attempts fail?

Answer» Contents:
Summary
Complete description
Computer specifications

Summary:
I moved a folder from D: to an external drive N:. I see that the moved folder is now "(empty)." The "Unmove" option is not available. FileScavenger 3.1 doesn't even find the original folder from D:. Windows is installed on C:. I have not made any changes to D: after the folder was moved.

Complete description:
I have two internal hard drives and one external. Windows and other PROGRAM files are on C:. Relatively unimportant files and documents are stored on separate partitions from the system (Windows). Back-ups are copied to the external drive N:, O:. I had intended to copy only, but made a mistake by choosing the "Move" option.

I proceeded to back up data from D: to the external hard drive N:. While examining the moved folders and files, I find that one of the folders is now empty. I checked folder options to make sure hidden files could be seen. I also examined "properties" for file size and number, finding "0 files" and "0 folders." It was reader software for ebooks from years ago. But I don't remember what it was. I suppose I could look for and buy a new version of some sort.

When I discovered this, I made sure not to do anything further to that hard drive.

I installed File Scavenger 3.1 and did a "long" scan. It FOUND just about everything except that one folder. I tried a few other freeware file recovery programs with same results.

I have noticed on occasion that Windows will finish moving/copying files, but sometimes the folders are without the files. It's rare but has happened in the past. I've noticed this using Win98SE on two PREVIOUS PCs and XPPro on this one. If I copy/move files individually, the results are better. It seems to happen most frequently when I move folders; sometimes files just aren't moved/copied at all, and without notices or error messages. I also click "refresh" to update, but to no avail. I feel like I have to hold Windows' hand when doing something so simple as copying a file.

Usually, after copying/moving a folder, I'll right click to examine properties and compare the size and number of files & folders. So once in a long while I'll find that not all of the files actually copied. I adapted as explained above.

Is there a way to recover the lost folder?

Solve : unable to load into windows xp after ghost backup...?

Answer»

My computer is only 2 weeks old, C drive is mainly for the system file while D drive is for my documents.

I've installed some new software on C drive, so I decided to run a ghost backup copy for my computer.

The ghost has to run through Dos Mode. so after it has been done, I re-start my computer as usual. After the computer finish loading the window XP logo... the screen was not going anywhere ( usually it should load into the blue windows screen), all i can see was a black screen with nothing on it.

I tried log into safe mode or last good config since I only installed google toolbar and MSN Live in there. shouldnt be anything major or error. but the same siutation happen, black screen, and unable to go into those 2 modes as well.

Any way I could get into windows without re-installing the whole xp again? many thanks. What antivirus protection do you have installed, UPDATED, and running?

Try going into System RESTORE, and going back a few days before the installation of MSN toolbar.
(Instead of just the last known good configuration) Person says can't start Windows, so System Restore is not possible I think.

chloess, you started in DOS mode how? From a floppy? a CD? a pen drive? What did you do to make it start in DOS?

When you made a Ghost image, do you mean you made an image of your C drive? Where was the image written to? Was it the D drive? Did it complete OK? Was it a .gho image file?

Hi,

thank you for your reply in the first plae.

I actually dont know much about my computer. the PC guy told me he installed a Ghost program for me. which when I start the computer in the Dos mode. I could choose to start my windows XP or run the ghost program. So when I need to backup a copy i just re-start my computer, go to the ghost program and choose to backup or restore.

I just start my computer as usual and choose to run windows xp.. then I can see the Xp logo ... then next sec the screen go black. maybe I could describe it as the system hanged when it is loading into the windows. I have no problem to start the machine and start to run the windows ( at least i can see the xp logo)

I am not sure where the image file goes to since he never explain to me how it works but he told me that is for creating the image for my C which is my system drive. Can i search the system to find it out .. ( if i can log onto it later?) How did you choose to start in the DOS mode? Do you have to press a key, insert a disk?
"...the PC guy told me he installed a Ghost program for me."

Personally, I'd take it back to the "tech" who installed the Ghost program for you and have him show you how to get it to work. Did he leave you any documentation or software with this "Ghost" program? If not I'd surely ask for it.

Alan <>< When the computer start it will give me options to load into windows or Ghost.. and I will choose ghost from there if i want to restore or create a backup.

The guy who installed the system for me didnt give me and disk or information at all. i believe it is Symantic Ghost 8.0 Chinese version. but i am not 100% sure. and he shown me once how to create and restore a backup and suggested me to run it regularlly. no document at all... and sadly i am unable to get hold of him. should I just uninstall the whole thing? cos it really CONFUSE me.. and seems like i am messing up my system If it's not working for you I would say lose it.And unless you live in China this would also be a VALID reason for dumping it altogether...

I highly recommend Acronis True Image for good solid backups.

Current best deal on it is thru newegg...(Kudos to GX1_Man )Quote from: patio on April 23, 2007, 03:08:45 PM

Solve : Having some problems with explorer.exe mem usage? can anyone help??

Answer»

for some reason, explorer.exe on my computer is ridiculously high. sometimes if i do not restart for about 2 days it reaches as high as 693k! sometimes just for a day it will go down to 20k out of the blue, but then be right back up again the next. when i restart, explorer.exe starts at about 50k, then gradually rises after a few hours. however, i am not opening things that would cause it to rise. i have about 3 mozilla tabs open at a time and aim. that is it. i used to be able to have about 20 tabs open, aim, limewire, photoshop, no problem. explorer.exe being high however does not cause my computer to be slower until it gets to about 500k or so it starts to effect mozillas speed. anyone have any suggestions? i kept track of how high it ROSE TODAY. it started at 53,224k when i restarted at 4:04pm. then gradually rose to about 67,504k by 6:05pm. then at 6:56pm i looked and it was at 165,732k, but i did not dont open anything new at this time. my computer isnt old. its a gateway, going to be 4 years old in july, but i think its time for a new one.Is it possible that you are infected by the MyDoom.B worm which has been known to masquerade as the genuine Explorer.exe

Solve : Files and Transfer Wizzard?

Hi all. Using XP-Pro. Doesn't seem to me that this utility can use a DVd, only a CD. I want to use it and my data is 2.3 gig. Doesn't recognize my DVD drive as a possiable device. Any help will be appreciated. It should be able to use EITHER...how are your drives setup on that machine ? ?Do you know your statement is true? If yes then the problem is CERTAINLY at my end. I have tried many combo's with no results.
Machine:

Asus P4P800D
Mem 2Gig Dual channel pc3200
OP: XP-PRO
HD 2 SATA 80Gig drives-C: and D: one part each
Squeaky clean.Yes it's true...
I MEANT how are the CD/DVD drives set up ? ?

But since you have 2 HDD's there is another way...create a NEW folder on your D: drive then go ahead and run FAST. When it's finished save it to the new folder on D: you CREATED...

Then burn the file to a DVD and you should be good to go.

Solve : Bad day today - Anticmos A virus - M: Drive disappeared.?

Answer»

There is no such thing as Windows SE, do you MEAN Windows 98SE? If you have a product key, you might as well ask someone to copy their Windows 98 or 98SE for you. Product keys WORK on both.

Are you sure you didn't get a recovery disk or something similar with your HP PC?

Another CHOICE would be to install Linux Ubuntu, but he can forget about playing any Windows games if you do that unless you get a QUICK course on how to use Wine.. If you are able to find someone with Win 3.1 you will be able to use the upgrade to install...

Keep in mind you don't have to install Win 3.1 it will just ask you for 2 or 3 random floppies during the install.

If memory serves me correct it is 8 floppies total.

You might try the local Library for this...Hey Raptor,

Actually, I did respond; my quotes were in your post. Don't think I don't appreciate you, just pointing it out.

OK, this is what I have done so far. I have moved the pagefile from C to D. I don't have any $uninstall files, as I keep them deleted, since I read it in a previous post somewhere. I used TreePie and found out I had a whole chunk set aside for Software DISTRIBUTION, so I turned off Automatic Update and deleted a major part of that, so much that now I have nearly 2G free space.

I have been using CCleaner for nearly a year now. I use Mozilla Firefox, not Internet Explorer, Patio, but I will follow your advice anyway because I do not want to lose the space I have. I had been using Eusing Registry Cleaner. I had taken it off, and when I downloaded it again yesterday and used it, it repaired over 800 items.

You guys are wonderful!!Quote from: Hedonist on August 08, 2008, 05:40:06 PM

As you can see, I have now recovered some free space.
Where is the free space shown?

Also, this shows the paging file on C:, thought that you moved it to D:

EDIT: I just checked my System Info, it also shows that same page file info, "C:\pagefile.sys"; MAYBE it simply means what it says - the location of pagefile.sys, rather than the location of the paging file(s). In my case, I've got a small paging file on C: and the main paging file on E:. Well, I thought the free space was indicated by the virtual memory because they are about the same. I just clicked on properties on the C disk and it says free space 1.87GB. Am I correct on that?

Oops! Me too, oops! I remembered uploading the information you had asked for but I checked another forum and I guess someone had asked for it there and that is where I UPLOADED it. So sorry.

I believe I did move the paging to D. I will double check when I can.

I suggest going into My Computer, Right Click your C Drive and go to Properties.
Then tell us the total capacity and free space.
Do the same with D Drive.Free space 1.87GB; ; used is 2.12GB, and total capacity is 3.99GB

D is 649MB available, 140MB used, capacity 789MB.

Before I did the Software Distribution deletion, free space was 100-200MB at varying times. This looks like a pretty hold computer for XP Professional.

Anyways, to free up as much space as you can, I would uninstall all software you don't use anymore (look through Add and Remove Programs in Control Panel).

Also, empty the Recycling Bin but CCleaner should have taken care of this.More RAM and a larger hard drive should keep XP from being so sluggish...it's grabbing free space for every task since there's not much RAM to begin with.

Solve : Legitimate copy of Win XP won't install service pack 2...??

Answer»

Hi all

Well... my legit copy of XP is installed on my desktop, no problem here or installing updates for the past 3 or 4 years. Also had SP2 for AGES.

I'm moving to a laptop, I've removed the Vista that came with it and want to install the XP onto it... all good, the new system works fine until I try to install XP Pro SERVICE pack 2... tells me it won't let me because my copy of Windows is naughty naughty... but it's not.

How do I tell them it's mine, or get around it so I can install SP2 or now SP3?

The MS website is a bit of a nightmare... I spent 15 minutes there looking for the right links but came up with about fifty different pages where I can buy software but nowhere to fix my prob!

:-)

So, you installed the same edition of Windows XP on your laptop as your desktop, right? Then, it's not a legitimate installation on your laptop. The Windows licence is for one computer. But the first PC I won't be using... it's going for spare parts, bless it's little hammered soul.

1. How do they know the original PC and WIn reg # isn't that PC?

2. How do I de-register it from one PC and register it on the new one?

is this even possible?

3. What do I do with my *censored* useless new Vista reg code now! I don't want it. Anyone wanna swap?

is there a way to SIMPLIFY Vista so it's more like XP? I know I know... we're all afraid of change... but I really dislike Vista.

:-)

chad,
1.=Your computer talks to the mothership anytime you connect to the internet.
2.=Can't do that
3.=Can't do that either.
truenorthIf you have an OEM version of Windows, I don't think that you can transfer it to another machine.

If you have a retail version, I think that you can transfer it - call MS. Actually, I think the MS license says that when the computer goes, so does your license to use that copy of Windows. Many states, however, have disallowed that provision in the MS license.Quote from: drmsucks

If you have a retail version, I think that you can transfer it

The Windows XP EULA states

Quote
You may move the Software to a different Workstation Computer. After the transfer, you must completely remove the Software from the former Workstation Computer.

Outside the USA things are different a UK (British) court has ruled that Microsoft and other "shrink-wrap" EULAs do not have legal force, because the buyer cannot review them before concluding the contract, and I have a feeling that they may contravene European law generally.

[update] They do.

When you buy a piece of shrinkwrap software, anything that is not printed on the OUTSIDE of the box is void and legally unenforceable, thus the plain copyright applies. By buying the box you make a contract conclusion, and any contract clause you are not able to know BEFORE the conclusion is invalid - including a paper inside the box, a textfile on the CD, and especially a text only shown on installation.

The UK and European law seems to make a lot of sense. I think that many U.S. states have also brought some reason to the MS EULA by declaring certain sections unenforceable in their state. The UK has been a part of the European Union since 01.01.1973, and European law applies to us, but even if it didn't, British contract law has always contained the principle that unfair clauses in a contract are null and void, and you can't get more unfair than a "contract" that you cannot even see before concluding the contract.

On a side note, I am afraid that on this forum (and others) far too much inaccurate and ill-informed stuff is written about what is and is not "illegal". Some people forget that the whole world is not America, and I think some people have the idea that Microsoft's EULAs are actually laws.

Points raised do all have merit. However ultimately it will be Bill and Co. that will either permit it or not (by virtue of denying use or upgrades, updates, etc).I believe that when the computer leaves the shop (when Windows is the O/S) it comes with embedded software that GIVES them monitoring access to the O/S and what computer it is in. While we may argue the legalese and morality of this setup the fact remains that unless you are prepared to fight it in court (after the fact) i believe you will be denied use in some manner or other. If I'm wrong Hurrah. i am of the opinion that if you purchase something you own it to do as you wish with it--give it away if you wish--but it appears with certain copyright material you own it with constraints.truenorthI hope Chad will be able to re-install Vista. I think thats where I'm heading now... but that presents a new problem... I bought the laptop with Windows... and have a legal reg key... but now no software!

Why don't they supply a *censored* disk if it's so anti-piracy-proof!!! Who is the computer mfg?

I'd be surprised if: a) you don't (or did before you started messing around) have a recovery partition or b) can't get a recovery disk from the mfg.Quote from: drmsucks on August 06, 2008, 08:54:12 PM

Yep... I'm in the queue now... Oh!

Success...
Someone from HP will call me back within 48 hours to tell me how much the recovery disk will be...

I was online with a HP rep 4 days ago telling them exactly what I wanted to do (ie remove Vista and install XP on clean partitions) they guided me through it! No mention of recovery disk, no mention of the 8 devices that won't work on Xp...

I have forced out of them a list of 8 drivers (links) that WILL work on XP... if anyone wants it posted?

If it's HP, you had a recovery partition and instructions for how to make a restore DVD.

You always need to have drivers for the hardware Windows doesn't have drivers for, e.g., chipset drivers.

What are your computer specs and how much RAM do you have? My personal experience with Vista is that it is 'smoother' than XP but slower on every task. But, without 2 GB of RAM or more, the 'user experience' sucks. I have 2 GB on each Vista machine and Vista runs fine - ALBEIT slower than XP.

I have Windows XP and I need help with setting up a password for ?DOS?

I want it to ask for a password when the black screen with text comes up Do you mean RIGHT when the COMPUTER TURNS on? Before it boots into Windows?right when the computer turns onSo you're looking for a BOOT Password.
My friend has one on his laptop, I will ask him about it. (JXY)alright thank youso you want a boot password, let's see.

Enter BIOS setup when your computer starts, keep pressing F12 i think. buttons vary from pc to pc.

and there should be a tab labeled security or something along those lines.

Find it, navigate to it, and then set a BIOS password. (Startup - password).

Enable it, save it, reboot computer.

Hope this helps. Make sure to write it down and store it in a place you can remember...

Solve : Internet Explorer Process Problem?

Answer»

When I open internet explorer and then close the window, the process doesn't close in the task manager processes.
Eventually I have multiple instances of explorer running and after there are about 6 or 7 instances of it running and I click on a link My internet explorer freezes. When this happens the only way I can get it to work is to manually end the processes in the task manager. When there is only one instance of it running the pop up I click on before opens up and everything is fine again until another group of explorer instances have appeared in the processes window. and I have to go Through it all again.

This has only been happening for about TEN days now.

I am running IE7 on a dual core machines with Windows Vista home premium.

Thanks for any help you can give.Just to be sure - several times you mention "explorer," I assume that each and every time you meant to say Internet Explorer. Right?

1) Do a complete virus scan.

2) Download and run ccleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim. Be sure that the first three items are checked for Internet Explorer on the Windows TAB; select Temporary Files under System; go to Options>Advanced, deselect the first item - temp files older than 48 hours. Any other CC selections are up to you - you may want to spend a little time on their site and read the tutorials. Re-boot and try IE again.

3) Try a reset on IE: from within IE, Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, reset.

4) Do you have another web browser INSTALLED - any problems with it?Quote from: drmsucks on August 09, 2008, 05:50:33 PM

Man you're a genius. The things you suggested first, Virus scan and running CCleaner I had already done. And yes I was referring to
IE explorer each time. But that resetting Explorer from within the program did the trick. it works perfectly now.

I have to re configure my setup to what it was before the problem but that is a minor thing, so thanks very much for your help!!

Can you tell me what you think was causing this problem so that I can PREVENT it from happening again?

Thanks again buddy you saved me a whole lot of grief.

Trevor.
Most likely, you had problem with either some IE setting, or add-on.
You're probably right, but I haven't installed anything new lately. so I don't know what it could have been.

Ahh the mysteries of Microsoft
Things just happen They sure do I am glad I came here for help though.Enjoy your stay Thanks. I know where to come next time.Glad that you're back in business Quote from: drmsucks on August 09, 2008, 10:31:35 PM

Solve : Desktop Wallpaper Dissapears During Startup?

Answer»

I have read about this problem happening to others, but their situation doesn't exactly fit mine.

When I load up windows the desktop wallpaper will come up, but temporarily disappears while the system tray icons are loading up. It then reappears after they have loaded. I'm not sure if the OS or the programs in the system tray are causing this problem.

Icons that appear in the System Tray:
-Local Area Connection 2
-Volume Control
-Safely Remove Hardware
-Norton 360
-Maxtor Status Icon
-Realtek SOUND Effect

System Information:
-Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP2
-Gateway E4300
-Intel Pentium 4
-CPU1: 3.00GHz
-CPU2: 3.00GHz
-RAM: 1GB
-Hard Drives:
C:/ 70.6GB
D:/ 3.84GB
F:/ 465GB

It's not really doing anything besides bothering me. WELL not anything apparent to me at least. Are you using Windows native background? Any wallpaper managers?Nope, not RUNNING any wallpaper managers.
Windows native background?

Also I probably should add that it does this no MATTER what IMAGE I set as the background.I suggest posing a HijackThis Log here.

-the first black screen with the 4 options says something about a memory test but when u let the screen change it STAYS blank and does nothing.Quote

i tried using a windows xp install disc but it would boot/open
What do you mean here?

What did you do before this? (downloads/installs/running programs, ect...)Go here and make the boot disc, http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/index.html

If your hard drive isn't totally dead, you should be able to plug in a USB drive and get your data off it before trying to run the XP installation disc. Which doesn't sound like it is bootable, so not sure if that is going to work or not.
I did nothing the computer was working fine i left the room came back and it was off. * i tried reinstalling the XP OS but the it didn't boot from the disk. And i tried making a boot disk it still didn't work. You have to change the Boot Order in the BIOS to boot from the CD first.1. Quote from: t1ao on August 01, 2008, 01:00:55 PM
does anyone know whats wrong?
The screen is black; we have no information on what the DEL, ESC, F8, and one "other" key are supposed to do; and you're not able to boot from any device.

2. We're going to need more information:

a. Computer make and model number if "brand name", otherwise the make and model number of the motherboard.
b. Desktop or laptop
c. Operating system version and service pack level (e.g. Windows XP Home Edition SP2).
d. What are the DEL, ESC, F8, and "other" key supposed to do? Top right of your keyboard is the "Pause/Break" key. I believe "Shift+Pause" will suspend the screen display so you may read it. Hmm... What resumes it? Try "CTRL+Q" or any normal keyboard key. Perhaps the documentation for your computer or motherboard will explain their functions.

3. Are you able to enter system setup (aka CMOS setup)? To enable all Power On Self Test (POST) diagnostics and their screen display (usually masked by default GUI image). While in system setup, you can also verify the BIOS sees your boot devices and that they are enabled for boot.

4. Are you able to access the Windows Advanced Options Menu to access different invocations of the operating system (e.g. Last Known Good Configuration, Safe Mode)?the computer is a desktop not made by any company it was custom built.

shift+pause worked - screen options:
DEL:Setup F8:Boot Menu F12:Network boot ESC:Skip memory test

i checked the BIOS and its boot from cd, then usb, then floppy, then HD. still doesnt boot the xp install disk while my other computer boots it fine.

When i press DEL I get te AMIBIOS SIMPLE SETUP UTILITY with options. standard CMOS Setup, Advanced Setup, Power Managment Setup. and more.

When i press escape the screen just goes black.

When i press F8 i just get a black screen.

When i press F12 i get a black screen SAYING copyright all rights reserved and it counts to 5 then another blank black screen pops up.

I found out something new.. when i leave the computer on overnight with the blackscreen without pressing any BUTTONS. it says a file in windows/system32 is corrupt. i dont remember what file it said it was so ill try it again tonight. When you have set the proper boot order you need to press F10 in Setup....you will be prompted to "save changes and exit" ?

Select Yes and hit Enter...

Solve : PUZZLING-System Admin Problem?

Answer»

After finally getting my HP Printer back into proper operating condition, I ran into this new problem. I am trying to install my Office Pro 2003 edition to avail myself of the OCR Document Reader. It starts up the install and gets to the POINT of installing and the following message comes up:

Windows Installer

The system administrator has set policies to prevent this
installation.

OK

As I'm the only one using this computer and I log in as the Administrator, what's up with this statement?

It seems that you solve one problem, it begets one or two more. Ah well.

Any help, of course, is appreciated.

This is the exact problem my FRIEND was facing when he tried installing Office 2003 on his laptop. All I did was try it in Safe Mode and it worked.
I suggest you try that first.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 08, 2008, 08:41:10 PM

Can is use this program before defragging XP system? Had it on my 2000, but wasn't sure about XP.It doesn't say you can't but there is no need to close programs when you defrag your hard disk.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 08, 2008, 07:31:31 AM

It doesn't say you can't but there is no need to close programs when you defrag your hard disk.

No, but if a program writes data to a VOLUME while it is being fragmented, the defragger will take much longer to finish.About two hours ago I was defragging with Youtube open.
All though you are right, it doesn't make a dramatic difference.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 08, 2008, 07:49:19 AM

Some programs will have more effect than others. The amount of data written and how often the write operations take place are the key factors. Web browsers saving cookies will slow down a defrag of the system volume a bit. I found that disabling SPEEDFAN made defrags of c:\ a LOT quicker, it was updating a temperature log file EVERY 5 minutes.Yeah, and playing games/using resource intensive programs while running a Defrag makes them both as slow as a snail. In general, closing all open windows, and leaving computer alone, should be sufficient to perform defrag. Start it before you go to bed.I like users who run it when also running a virus scan, watching youtube and burning a MUSIC CD.....

Solve : Computer wakes itself from hibernate after 10 minutes?

Answer»

Renaming offensive file is your safest bet.Phew, I'm glad you managed to finally figure it out! Quite frankly, I was running out of ideas. Taking a quick look at your HijackThis log, I don't see anything malicious. One suggestion, though... If you don't want to RENAME the file, you can open up your mouse options and see if there is an option to disable automatic updating. Or you could try removing this entry in HJT...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint\ipoint.exe"

As far as I know, the file is non-essential. If this is disabled, then dpupdchk should be disabled as well. To use them, you would have to run the program manually. At least, this is how it should work out. I have never used an IntelliPoint mouse before, so I'm not 100% sure about this. If you want to test it out, I would suggest having a backup mouse just in case you need to undo the changes (you can do this through HJT's menu).

If you'd rather not bother, then simply renaming the file should work.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ipoint.exe-18993.html
ipoint.exe - required if you use non-standard Windows driver featuresBad news. That wasn't it. I thought for sure I had it licked but it started up again by itself tonight. Man this is frustrating. One thing I did notice though - if I hibernate and then remove the power to the computer (by turning off the power strip it's plugged into) I can then turn the power back on and the computer remains in hibernate! Not sure what this means but hope it helps somehow :-) Where I'm at now... I removed about a dozen programs I installed in the last TWO weeks because I was going to do a system restore from back then but didn't have to restore. The problem is gone. So now I'm installing the programs one at a time and testing. I'll post what I find out. What I hate more than the computer coming out of hibernate by itself is that it wouldn't hibernate by itself after a set time either. I like to set it to scan at night and go to sleep and have it shut down. It was staying on all night. I don't know what's up but I guess I got it fixed. I just reinstalled most of the programs I just uninstalled and everythings working fine so far. I think I'll quit while I'm ahead. :-) Sure wish I could have found out what it was so I could post it here - I will if I ever find out :-) That's one of the reasons, I never recommend hibernate. It's simply faulty tool, and M$ was never able to make it work 100%.Hey, I'm just glad it's working out for you. Like Broni said, hibernate isn't exactly the most reliable feature, so it can be pretty TRICKY trying to make it work properly. You might want to make a System Restore point now while it still works! Heh.My curiosity got the best of me :-) I had to keep on installing the things I removed till I found the culprit lol. I must be a geek at heart - been working on this for days lol. I found the culprit - default setup of system mechanic has two items set to active. If I set all active functions to disable then no problems :-) whew :-)Nice investigation, but this time it's gonna be for sure, is it?....LOLTime to get serious about a regimented backup strategy....
If you need suggestions Post back.Yep - no problems last night - never started up. And it hibernated by itself too. I do have backups - I use system restore a lot (about 10 times in the last few days hehe) and I have Acronis disk image software. I am going to make another image tonight I think. Thanks again for all your help and suggestions everyone. I learned a lot about malware even though that wasn't my problem I'm checking into the online TRAINING LINKS posted in this forum - I think I'd like to become a helper eventually. It's kinda fun Quote from: gitman7 on August 08, 2008, 03:44:40 PM

I like to do hibernate because I really like not having to wait so long for computer to start up - sometimes I just want to check the weather real quick before I jump on my bike to head to work. But I do reboot the computer regularly when I'm home. It seems I have to anyway as I'm always updating or installing something hehe.

Solve : My PC switches off whenever I launch a print?

Answer»

I am using Windows XP and since some four days each time I click on Printer or Print my PC automatically switches off. I did not install any software LASTLY. I did not re-install the driver for printer. In FACT the printers I am using are all network printers. I scanned for viruses with AVG 8.0; many were detected. I cleaned them but still I cant do any print job.
Please advise how to solve the issue
ThxUninstall the printer from Device Manager by right clicking it and SELECTING remove.
Power down and dis-connect the printer.
Go to Add Remove PROGRAMS and un-install the printer software.
Re-boot.
Re-install the printer software and hook up the printer when prompted.
When finished re-boot and test everything .

1. Network Printers. Are your "network" printers attached directly to different host computers via one of their local interfaces (serial, parallel, USB)? If so, what operating system(s) are the host computers using? Or are they attached directly to the network?

Basically, I'm wondering whether your print drivers are downloaded automatically from host computer or whether you must install them manually on your computer.

Is your computer the only one having problems accessing the printers?

2. Safe Mode with Networking. Boot to "Safe Mode with Networking" and try accessing printer from there. Don't KNOW if this is possible. Of course, even if it is; you'd be using same print drivers as normal mode.

3. Viruses. I don't do "viruses".

Solve : Media Center?

Answer»

I bought a Sony Vaio VGCRB60G a couple of years ago. Last year it crashes and I ran the system restore to get it to work again. When I did this, my media center quit working. Now whe you go onto media center I get this message:

Component Registration Failure
Some of the files needed to play radio or video are MISSING or corrupt. Media Center component registration may have failed.

I click OK and I get this:

Critical Process Failure
A critical Media Center Process has unexpectedly failed. If problems persist, please restart your machine and try again, or contact techical support. Code: 3

It's taken me a year, but I'm finally trying to fix it. If you know what to do, I would really appreciate your help because I would really like this program back without going out and buying it.

ThanksI forgot to mention that I am using Windows XPBased on your POST, there's the strong possibility the crash affected some registry entries and the Media Center is now damaged.

The possibility that a clean install using the software provided by the vendor/manufacturer of your computer may be the only alternative you have to fixing the problem.

Consequently...I'd recommend backing up any important images, files, documents, folders, ETC., etc...andperforming a clean installation using the recovery software provided by the computer manufacturer.

However, you may want to wait for further assistance from other mebers of this forum, before continuing. I am almost positive, though, that a clean install is probably needed here.I was never given any software when I bought the computer. Check your local hard drive to see if there is a partition labeled for recovery of your system back to its factory specs. Normally labeled as a "recovery partition".

To access the recovery partition, you may need to use one of your function keys at boot, but remember...doing this will wipe your hard drive clean and restore it to its ORIGINAL factory settings and you will lose any files, programs, etc., etc...you have added after your original purchase.

If this option is not available to you...and your local drive is not partitioned into two separate drives, you may want to go to Sony's Support page to inquire about recovery software for your computer. The software is relatively inexpensive...and needed...should you not have the afore mentioned recovery partition.Also...you may want to look at this support page...supplied by Sony's Support site.I did a search and a lot of things came up. VAIO recovery, VAIO recovery tools, create recovery discs, another VAIO recovery, and the VAIO recovery guide. I'm reading through the recovery guide and it's telling me to do what I did when my computer crashed. I'm just worried that since the last TIME I did this it messed things up that it would make it worse. There's a link on that page I provided you titled "System recovery and recovery disc information".

Click that link and then give it a good read.

Remember what I told you previously...should you choose to recover your PC...you will lose any data /programs you have added since its original purchase...

Sony's Recovery Wizard restores your computer to its original factory specifications. So please remember to backup any programs and/or files, pictures, music, etc., etc., you wish to save.I'm backing up everything right now. This needed to be done anyways because my computer hasn't been running too well lately. Please keep us posted and let us know how the recovery process is going, please.Ok, I post later on today. It's gonna take me a while to back up everything.

Solve : Dual boot Windows Xp/Vista?

Answer»

How would I go about creating a dual boot for WV and XP??(starting out with only VISTA). What computers can I do it with(Iam wanting to do it with a dell laptop when I get it) How can I make sure that it will work twith the laptop I will buy? And any other FAQ anyone may have on this question.

ThankxxxStarting out with Vista installed is "backwards," but doable.

Nothing to it, really. BUT, first make sure that there are XP drivers for all of your hardware on the laptop - mb, audio, wireless, etc.

Then, simply create a partition for XP using Vista disk management and install XP.

The boot will be screwed up (don't mean to get technical!) because of installing XP after Vista ->get VistaBootPro, handles the boot situation like magic. http://www.vistabootpro.org/

It's really a simple procedure if you get all your drivers in advance; and, oddly ENOUGH, you can Google to fill in the blanks!

Best of luck - any questions, post back. Why don't you start with virtual machine, and see if you like it?Quote from: drmsucks on August 07, 2008, 09:54:52 PM

Anmd btw, if I install xp on a vista with a dual boot, will it void my warranty with dell?
Technically, I don't know but my sense is that they would try to disclaim any warranty work.

My feeling on my wife's dual boot HP is that if I have an HP warranty issue, I'll just do a recovery and let them have it back with just Vista. ACTUALLY, I would get a perverse pleasure out of re-loading the crapware and sending it back to them to deal with. The cleanest solution in this instance if you're concerned about warranty issues would be to make sure the Dell BIOS supports choosing which HDD to boot from.
If it does simply buy a new HDD and temporarily disconnect the Vista drive and do a full install of XP on the 2nd drive.
This WAY they will not bang heads and you will have far fewer issues with the 2 running side by side.
Some applications will run in XP from the Vista drive but it's best to re-install the programs you use the most also on the XP drive...

Solve : Outlook Error 0x800CCC6D?

I did something quite stupid...

I emailed a really large email (to myself) thinking that Outlook would tell me if the attachment was too large. When I didn't get it after a while I sent another (smaller but still big) email too myself - agains stupid. Now they are stuck in the Outbox. I can't delete them, they won't go through, and it is delaying all other incoming and outgoing emails.
I finally got this error 0x800CCC6D saying that the message was too large. I dont know what to do and I want to do it while drawing the least ATTRACTION to myself since I don't want the other people at WORK here to know how stupid I am.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just press Ctrl + F and type the error code, when the page opens.

Any luck? Thanks for your response.

Unfortunately it didn't help at all. I tried the run command thing they suggested but I didn't get the response that they SAID I should...

Any other SUGGESTIONS?Thank you for your help, the problem has been resolved.

For anyone with the same problem in the future. Go "Work Offline" and try to delete the file. If that doesn't work. exit Outlook, open it again, go 'work offline' and try to delete it again. It worked for me

Solve : Windows SP3?

Answer»

Do any of you know where I can buy a copy of SP3 for Windows XP?You don't have to buy it. Just visit the Windows Update site and download it for free.I tried to down load it last night and it said that it would take 26 hours. I live out in the country and we don't have high speed, just the phone line. Any way, I started the down load and went to bed. When I got up it had stopped some time last night and I tried to restart it and was told that it would take 31 hours to down load. On that NOTE I shut it down. So it would be much worth my time to pay for a copy. That way I don't have the phone TIED up for two days. Thank you for your time. You can order it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/sp3/default.mspxI know how you feel; I have to go to my fiancé's to download most things. If you know someone who has broadband (I live out in the desert, so I know it can be hard in some places), you could ask them to download and burn a copy for you. But if you absolutely have to buy it, then just follow Broni's link.

Or you could get a download manager (I love Free Download Manager) and just download SP3 little by little like I did. I know you PROBABLY don't want to go through the hassle; I just hate to see people pay money for things they can get for free. Thanks for the information. I just ordered it. $4.00 for the disk and $6.00 to ship. That beats two days of trying to down load it. Once again thank you for your time. OH the bad part is it may take up to three weeks to get it.You're welcome
No rush, SP3 is not as crucial as SP2 was.And as far as shipping...mine showed up nine days after ordering.

Solve : Can't Reboot...?

Answer»

I recently purchased a second hand Compaq for my kids and was told that it only had DOS and I WOULD have to provide my own OS (which I had Windows XP Professional). The computer has 512 ram and 40 GB hard drive. I installed Windows with no PROBLEM (however, I loaded it as a new install as I was told the old OS was removed). It ran fine and then my kids had me begin the installation of ALL their games. It ran fine for about 2 hours and it started freezing up. It finally began freezing up during the reboot and I can't get it past the Windows loading logo.

During the reboot though it asks me if I WANT to use Windows or Windows XP. I'm at my wits end. Anybody have any helpful information to share? My kids are real anxious to play and I think I may have messed up their computer.Did you FORMAT the hard drive when you did this install?

Did you have all the HARDWARE drivers when you did the install?

Is the system a laptop or desktop? And have you looked inside of it to see how much dust is inside of it?

There are a couple of things you may want to consider...

If this is a clean install and you don't mind losing any data that's already on the machine...follow this guide: http://www.saviourpc.com/windows_xp_clean_install

Afterwards...you may need to look for drivers if any of the hardware on the Compaq is not recognized by XP. This can be accomplished by visiting the manufacturer's website for your particular model Compaq and then downloading and installing the drivers your computer needs.

Once you have all of that done...and this computer will be on line...don't forget to do all your updates from the Windows Update website...along with installing malware protection...and a firewall (XP has its own built in firewall).

Keep us posted...

Solve : FTP from the Mainframe to Windows?

Answer»

When I FTP from the mainframe to WINDOWS it converts the carat (^), which is required as a field separator by the vendor, to a µ (I am not even sure what this is). I need to put the file in an editor and do a CHANGE all from µ to ^. That is no big deal for the small files I am currently dealing with but when I have larger files thay won't fit into the editor to subsequently allow me to change them. Do you know of a way to avoid having to do this?

Thanks

Gary Interesting that it switches the ascii character in transit. A quick fix may be a batch file to search for all instances of the wrong ascii character and replace with ^ so that you dont have to MANUALLY do this. Thanks ... we found the solution ... USING a ascii hex 5F worked. It somehow switches this hex value to a carat '^' on the Windows platform.

Solve : WMP11 and GOM Player Lockup with .mpg files --?

Answer»

Greetings. I am running XP SP3 with updates. The system has been stable for quite some time. A couple of weeks ago I noticed Media Player 11 began acting strangely with .mpg files. Upon opening a .mpg, the LAN internet connection is cut ("a network cable is disconnected or missing"). Further, at the completion of playing the file the computer is locked up requiring a reset. CTL-ALT-DEL has no effect. Upon reset and reboot the connection is restored and I can access the internet normally. This also appears to occur with GOM Player on the same .mpg files. Other file TYPES don't seem to be affected, although I don't dabble in a large number of file types. Streaming audio and .WAV file seem okay. My LAN interface to DSL is via a 3Com Etherlink card. Since the problem is occuring with both players it leads me to believe that there may be a problem with one of the XP file handlers, or that an XP setting has been changed for the .mpg file type. Everything had been working normally for months until a couple of weeks ago. Virus and spyware scans don't turn up a thing. Any help or SUGGESTIONS on where to look and/or what diagnostics to run will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Can you play other VIDEO files OK? Only .mpg is causing problem?
Are those .mpgs standalone files, or played on the internet?if u are streaming *.mpg files then your modem may be locking up causing your computer to start looking for the file which can no longer be found. Your connection speed may be an issue dependig on the quality of video
Thank you for your replys. These are .mpg files that are stored on my computer or on USB memory sticks, and that I have used for a long time. I haven't had any problems with streaming video, by the way. A knowledgable person on another forum suggested I disable Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, which is supposedly a "bad actor" with WMP 11. I did this (it had been set to "Manual"), and it appears to have fixed the problem with both WMP 11 and GOM Player. I've tried several files with both players and the play perfectly, and even repeat if I have that OPTION set. Evidentally there was something going on in WMPNSS that was affecting both players. It sure would be interesting to know why and how it happened. Another SUGGESTION was made to download a new Codec pack, but I didn't have to do that (so far). If anyone has any further comments I'd be interested in hearing them. Thanks again. That's an interesting solution. Bookmarked. Thanks

Solve : Time and Date skip.?

Answer»

Every time I come on the computer, it says a wrong time and a date. I try to change it, but it keeps doing the same thing. I think it's a virus, but I need to make sure. What's going on?The first thing you should is change the battery. What battery? I'm not using a LAPTOP, just a desktop. He doesn't mean a laptop battery. On the motherboard of the computer is a little battery like the ones you get in watches and clocks. Among other THINGS, it runs the system clock when the computer is turned off. if the computer is losing or forgetting the date and time it's a pretty good bet that the battery is coming to the end of its LIFE. How old is the computer?

You may need to take it to a repair shop if you do not have experience of opening up the case or you are unsure about doing that. You would need to take the old one out to SHOW when you ask for a new one.

Why did you think it was a virus?

Solve : Auto creation of shell32.dll how ??????

Answer»

I did a thing last night.... I just dragged the file shell32.dll to the desktop and REFRESHED the directory system32 and i saw shell32.dll in it.

I already drag and DROPPED it to desktop, how it auto created there ?
How many such kinds of files presented in windows ?
Which program is doing such tasks ?1) Why would you drag a .dll file to the desktop?
2) When you drag a file to the desktop you are creating a shortcut to the file unless you specifically move it
3) There are any number of files in System32 you cannot delete - they will automatically be replaced with their backup files (in \windows\system32\dllcache). See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236995I predict this SYSTEM will be pretty hosed within the next 2 weeks....This is the expert VB8 programmer, folks...Quote from: Salmon TROUT on October 24, 2009, 10:11:15 AM

This is the expert VB8 programmer, folks...

hate to say it... but is that not an oxymoron most of the time?I'm not an expert vb8 programmer I'm doing the things while learning, I'm beginner in vb8. Nobody answered my question, you are saying otherthan the topic. Only allan gave me some information. As a beginner i have an anxiety to know the things that "what would be happened if we do it".

So i tried to drag a system file but it recreated automatically and i want to know the reason behind it. So i'm a learner........ Please provide me useful information...

Especially for salmon trout i'm learning vb8 and i'm writing code to vb6 by learning because it is very urgent to recode so no time to learn and no time to coding again.

any way thanks to your posts. If you have any useful information about this post the reply. It's called Windows File Protection. If it is protected by windows file protection then i did another thing today.

I changed the folder icon that is located in shell32.dll and this file protection didn't stopped me and the modified file will acts as the original shell32.dll and no problems found now. If i want to create a new folder, it is created with my icon.....

Then what happened to windows file protection ? why it didn't warn me ?you either disabled WFP or also changed the shell32.dll in dllcache. No i used resource hacker software to change it.and if you ran sfc /scannow it would replace the file.

windows file protection only happens instantly when the file is replaced by another, deleted, or moved. It would appear that editing the file, (which I might add is impossible while windows is running anyway, or at the very least requires a reboot) does not cause wfp to engage.yes i restarted the windows for changes. But it didn't keep the original file. If i want the original where can i get it ? C:\windows\system32\dllcache

Solve : Password asked when start up windows?

Answer»

Hi everyone, I got a PC that was given away from my company. It was installed with windows XP before. When I got it, it didn't have hard drive or RAM so I bought a new one and install them on my PC. When I first start up the PC, this message was appeared:

I don't KNOW the password so what can I do to solve this issue?
Please help.
Thanks!!!It says to press I did try that. Then it say "incorrect password, system hail, windows must shut down."It also says it's not seeing any hard drives...
What happened prior to this dilemna ? ?I think it might be because the hard drive that got windows XP installed on was removed prior to give the PC away. That's why it's ask for that old hard drive, not the one that I bought.
That's what I though but not sure. Quote from: khuynh on October 25, 2009, 08:39:26 PM

I don't know the password so what can I do to solve this issue?
khuynh: The obvious answer would be "ask your company".

It says to press <CTRL><ENTER>
I almost FELL for that also... But I think it's asking user to prove they're authorized first... (by typing the password).

Hey, I'll go out on a limb... I'm guessing the "Secondary" indicates the secondary IDE channel (as opposed to "Primary"). How many IDE connectors are on the motherboard?Quote from: dahlarbear on October 25, 2009, 09:56:42 PM

I did ask my company and already tried the one they gave me, it didn't work either.

There are 2, primary and secondary.

Is there any kind of software that can break the password that y'all know of so I can try?Quote from: dahlarbear on October 25, 2009, 09:56:42 PM

He never said he tried it. That's the BIOS password which can be cleared by resetting the CMOS, remove battery and clear with jumper. See www.support.dell.com for detailed instructions.

Solve : Did you know...?

Answer»

about these strange files? Look at the attached zip file. In it contains two drag-and-drop files. Drag a file on one and it copies it to your My Documents FOLDER, drag it on the other and it creates a NEW zip file containing the file you dropped.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Not sure here what you want us to accomplish by posting this zip file...
What do you want to know ? ?
Hmmm....interesting.... an explanation?

I'm sure we're aware of the various features AVAILABLE with associations. Both of those EXTENSIONS are both in the registry (HKCR\.desklink and HKCR\.mydocs) and both have persistenthandlers.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe "persistenthandlers" might be able to handle all of the stuff that all other handles can, for example, Drag Drop handlers, Icon handlers, etc. There is far more data that can be associated with a file extensions then a mere "program to open them".

I am unsure how long these extensions have had this feature. If I had to guess I WOULD have to say since Either Windows ME or Windows 2000.

As a short aside, "Icon handlers" are of special interest for some purposes.

For example: there are a number of functions that can be used to extract file information. If requested this can include the files icon. this function is SHGetFileInfo().

The function can also accept a flag that says not to access the file. In the case of retrieving an icon, this means that the icon doesn't get "content specific" treatment. a Example being, for example, "ico" files, whose icon is registered as "%1"... which is to say, themselves. Other programs often register an Icon handler for their files, which means, for example, that a plugin could use word and register a icon handler and show a little preview of the word document instead of the standard word icon.
