Solve : Full screen in IE?

Answer»

Is there any way to configure IE to open new tabs in full screen? When you say Full Screen, do you mean as though F11 was toggled? If so, I do not believe so, no.XP and IE remembers your preference for screen size. XP and IE remembers the size you requested the last two or three times. ( Pop-up ads can change the selection. )
Open one IE window, right click and open spot on the task between start and time. Choose "Tile Window Vertically."

or

function init() {
window.resizeTo(1024,768);
}
window.onload = init;

Make Internet Explorer Open in the Window Size You Want
Periodically, Internet Explorer (IE) forgets the settings for its window size and decides to open in an annoying small window. If you close all other IE windows that might be open, resize the small window (do not maximize) and then close it, IE is supposed to remember that it was resized when you next open it. But SOMETIMES it goes right ahead and opens in a small window again. In that case, there are several methods to try.

•Resize (with only one window open) and then close by clicking the X in the upper right corner while holding down the Shift key. Often this works but it may not.
•If the above does not work, your next step is to try the two-window method.
1.Open a single IE window (which is presumably still too small)
2.Now open a secondary IE window by either right-clicking or shift-clicking
on any convenient link in the open IE window
3.Resize this second window to the desired dimensions
4.Close this resized window by clicking the X in the upper right corner while holding down the Shift key
5.Resize the still open original window as desired
6.Close this window by clicking the X in the upper right corner while holding down the Shift key
If you do not mind always having maximized IE windows, ANOTHER approach is to edit the IE shortcut. Right-click on the shortcut that you use for IE and choose properties in the context menu. In the drop-down menu for "Run" select "Maximized". (Secondary IE windows will not inherit this setting).

Is there any way to configure IE to open new tabs in full screen?

« on: Today at 12:38:59 PM »

Super Dave asked:

"Is there any way to configure IE to open new tabs in full screen?"

Mr Allen:

What did Super Dave ask?

________________________________

p.s My interpretation of the question is correct.I believe he's asking if a new tab (not IE itself) can be opened full screen, as though the F-11 key were toggled. I may be mistaken, but that's what it seems. Anyway, that's what I asked in my first post above.Quote from: Allan on October 25, 2009, 01:41:55 PM

Allan,
I suspect you are correct.
Too bad SuperDave does not respond.

I don't completely understand how Tabs works. A new window is not required but we can return to the old information.

If the current screen is full screen ( not F11 ) would the new tab be full screen ( not necessarily Max )?In fact it does, you are absolutely correct . So now I really have no idea what he's askingunless he wan't to open a tab full screen when IE is NOT full screen

Solve : Change resolution to 1024x768 on kiosk with hot keys from 800x600??

Answer»

I am trying to change the resolution to 1024x768 from 800x600 on a Windows XP Pro Kiosk and I can GET to the blue desktop, but right-click is disabled, there is no start -> run option to type in "CONTROL" to get to control pannel. Does anyone know of maybe a hotkey combination that MIGHT be available to change the DISPLAY settings or bring the display properties menu up?

Worst comes worst I can CREATE a autorun CD to trigger "control" maybe to bring up control pannel.. Just wondering if there is a simpler way before creating a CD with an autorun instruction.

Solve : INVALID BOOT.INI FILE?

Answer»

Hello friends, while BOOTING, my windows show a line " Invalid BOOT.INI File, booting from C:\windows " and the system gets booted. What is the meaning of the above message. Is it a problem ? How to rectify this problem. PLEASE reply. When do you see that message? And it's unclear from your post if the system boots normally in SPITE of the message. If Boot.ini is MIA Ntldr will display the advisory message you spotted and automatically boot from the Windows folder in C: (in Win 2K it will boot from C:\Winnt) - this is a default selection in Ntldr. Booting will be successful provided there is an OS installed in C:\Windows or C:\Winnt

The only problems are that in a multi-boot configuration the boot MENU will not be displayed and options will not be activated. Replace your Boot.ini file.

Solve : Computer running slow after XP Re-install, HELP!?

Answer»

Hello all,

A friend gave me a Dell Inspiron 5100. I decided to re-install windows xp just to get all of his old programs and personal info off the computer. (I have done this a few time with my desktop computer with no problems) After the installation I downloaded all the drivers and updates. It seems as though the computer is running slower than it was before I wiped it. It has plenty of HD space, the graphics card is up to date. I even have it plugged into my cable internet, because the wireless card that came with it was old and slow.

Since I have never done this with a laptop, is there something I am over looking? I went to the dell site and downloaded all of the updates and drivers they had for this model.

I would love any helpful info that anyone might have on this situation. Thanks so MUCH!How much RAM does it have?512 mb of RAMThe HD might not be clean.

Use the Task Manager to view all applications and processes.

There might be one or two processes using all the CPU. We don't know how much free Ram that you have or can recover.

Make sure your anti virus is working.

Clean the registry:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/cleanup.htm

Older machines take quite awhile to boot. Make sure the CPU is near zero before using personal applications.

512 mb of RAM
Should be adequate. I assume you reinstalled anti-virus.
It's unclear why it would be so slow immediately after a REINSTALL.
Next do disk cleanup with: CCleaner
Do the cleaner tab once and the registry tab a few TIMES until it's less than 1 or 2 items.
Then do a disk defrag with: Defraggler

The CPU jumps between 5% to 15%. but doesn't go over 15% (at the moment) I typically just have my messenger and firefox running, and it's super slow LOADING most websites. I know it's not the internet. The HD was copletely wiped before I installed XP. Just don't understand why it ran faster before it was wiped.

I have the full version of AVG, it scans every morning, no problems there.Firefox and IE have to "rebuild" the temporary files and will be slower loading websites. I think Firefox may be more susceptable to this, but I run Firefox Portable, so it's not a fair comparison. Surf around for a day or two and see if it speeds up.

I ran a test on a brand new install of Firefox Portable and it took forever to load anything. Now, when I update, it only overwrites the executables and not the bookmarks or history or temp files.1. Installation Media. What media did you reinstall Windows XP from:
a. Recovery/Restore Partition
b. OEM Recovery/Restore CD
c. OEM Install CD
d. Microsoft Retail Install CD

2. Process Explorer. Instead of Task Manager, use the program Microsoft should have provided - Process Explorer from SysInternals (now owned by Microsoft). It will give you a better view of what's going on with your system. Look for processes and/or services that don't need to be running. (In other words review and cleanup list of third party software that automatically runs at system startup.)

3. Autoruns. The Autoruns program from SysInternals is one of many "free" programs you may use to control what runs at system startup. (Or you can use "Startup" tab of Microsoft utility "msconfig". Access via "Start -> Run -> type "msconfig", select OK -> select Startup tab".)You said you downloaded and installed all of the drivers, but did you first install the chipset driver?

Solve : Optical drives disabled by XP PRO SP. 2 after several weeks of use?

Answer»

This has happened twice on two different systems. Pentium 4 1.8 to 2.3 ghz Intel desk top boards. 2 different Legal copies of XP. Systems not on line. All hardware checked good before and after problem. Installations and verification by phone both went normally. One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through DEVICE Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or SECONDARY Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled. What 3rd party PROGRAMS have you recently installed that might interact with the optical drives (itunes, nero, etc)?I have been attempting to convert VHS videos to CD format. The latest software I am using is the Dazzle product. It appeared to work normally for a while making CD's but when the drives went south I did a work around of saving the movies to an external drive via USB connection. On the previous problem system I used another product which didn't work at all well so was returned to Best Buy for credit. I also have had Dazzle running on our new online HP/Vista system. It is not always consistent and I did not WANT to screw up the new main system (WIFE is not experienced and has "0" patience with computer glitches) so removed.

The system bios recognizes the optical drives and the Windows device manager lists them but with a little yellow "?" icon before each. I have tried removing the optical drives and associated drivers and re-booting the system. When it starts the operating system tries to re-install the optical drives but ends with a error message and will go no farther.

I am presently out of town but will try other suggestions next week. Because these systems are not online all downloads have to come through an external USB drive from our main system.

Thanks for your help; I have the patience of an oak tree (so says my son) and will continue to try stuff. Jim Thanks Broni,

I am out of town and will try suggestions when I return on Monday.

Later, JimTry uninstalling Dazzle and see if the drives work. If so,..............Allan, I will try what you suggest when I get home. Thanks, JimSure. Please let us know.

Ok, that SOUNDS good......how do i do that?
Boot from the floppy and select command prompt only.
Change to the c: drive
At the prompt type: copy c:\himem.sys c:\windows and press enter. It should respond with "one file copied". Remove the floppy and reboot.

Ok, boot to DOS from floppy I get A:/> ,changed to c drive now C:/> ,tried copying but always bad command what am i doin wrong?? I typed it just like you said. You might have a more serious PROBLEM that can't be corrected without a windows CD. There are some things you can try. Boot from the floppy. At the A:> prompt, type sys c: . This will refresh the SYSTEM files. Try the copy command again. Make sure you are using a backward slash in the command. It does matter.tried the copy files it SAYS himem.sys file not found.
tried sys c: at A:\> prompt, again bad command. You will need to obtain a Win98 SE CD to continue...Quote from: GX1_Man on April 18, 2007, 04:39:05 AM
I think you are stuck without an operating system CD.

Solve : Windows 200 delete with WinXP installed..??

Answer»

Hi. I recenly "downloaded" a copy of XP from a P2P software and made the CD, all is well only cannot boot from CD..... Ok, so I installed WinXP but when the setup began I tried to delete the main partition where Win2000 is installed and it SAYS I cant because some TEMP. setup files are on the partition.. So I installed XP anyways.. Now I have both XP and Win2000 and I really want to delete Win2000, but cant do it, cant delete partition or anything.... Any help would be appreciated. ThanksI have been told by someone that this is a simple procedure, but it seems a little complicated.....seeing as how I cant accomplish it..... would making setup disks (3.5 floppys) for win XP help with the problem of Deleting the partition??? thanksGet a legitimate version of XP and we'll help. Not only is this illegal, but your copy is probably corrupt and/or infected.O.K, I am aware of the "illegality" of such, however I have been opposed to installing WinXP for years as I do not liek the platform, and before investing the $$ I wanted to TRY and see how I liked it, but the fact that Win2000 is still installed is causing the system to run slow, and I am unable to properly "enjoy" XP's features... I dont BELIEVE the copy of XP iis infected or corrupt because it does work well on my computer....... Is there just a simple way to delete the older version of windows....?? thanksYou've been so opposed to it, but you want to use it to replace your current OS? Maybe somebody else will help you, but I'm out of this one. Thanks anyways my friend... lol, anyways, to all others, I simply need to know how to delete my older win2000 version with XP already installed... thanksravemeover .... Unfortunately, it goes against what this forum stands for to be assisting anyone to install pirated operating systems. If you obtain a legit copy of Windows XP and are still having difficulties, we will pleased to ASSIST you.

Solve : Need Help Please :) (Computer Screen being sensentive)?

Answer»

Hi there

I was just wondering when ever I log ONTO the net and STAY on for a SHORT amount of time my screen goes wider. I have to bang on my monitor to make the size go back to normal. Is there anyway to fix this?

I had to reprgram my computer and it never did this before but now it does..

Any help would be great!

Thanks!Sounds like you will soon need a NEW monitor.
Does this happen with another monitor?
Or on another PC, with that monitor?
Some more details would be nice, for example make/model of PC and monitor, what happened before this started, how old the PC and monitor are, etc.
It does sound like a failing monitor to me too, but more details would help narrow it down.Quote from: Calum on April 23, 2007, 01:11:29 PM

Good point, Calum. Wishywashy, you should wiggle the monitor cable to SEE if the problem comes and goes. If the cable has a plug at the monitor end, is it tight in its socket?

If this an LCD, I'd try reseating the cable. They don't like not being totally secure. But like everyone's saying, your monitor may be going out.Banging on it is ALWAYS a good approach. The more force the better.Quote from: GX1_Man on April 23, 2007, 05:45:33 PM

Right click My Computer and select Manage then Disk Management...if your using ntfs file system on the drive(s) that you have trouble with and you didn't format them with your new install then the account that was deleted when you reinstalled has owner permisions on those files and you may not be able to do certain things with them such as edit or delete them or access certain folders so if you can backup your data on those other drives and then format them you should stop seeing those messages.Have a read here:

Solve : Transferring files from windows xp to windows me?

I am TRYING to take some files to my secondary computer. Obviously ms works files from XP will not open in the 2nd computer which RUNS ms works ME. Sooooo- the question is- can I install XP to the 2nd computer? Both are e machines so the software is bundled. Can I install just Works? Should/can I reformat the 2nd computer and use the other restore DISC? any ideas would be appreciated....
Installing Windows XP on the second machine would be illegal. So, no, can't do that. I believe the solution is simple. You should be ABLE to save the Works files on your Win XP machine in a format that can be opened in the older version of Works. Look at the options you have for saving Works files to different formats. One of the choices is probably older version of Works. If not, RTF or some other option will probably work.

An alternative might be to download and install a freeware WORD processor called AbiWord on you Win ME machine.

Solve : Upgrading 98se-xp Home?

Answer»

Trying to upgrade, need info. please...
Would there be any problem to upgrading???

System Specs.
Intel--D845WN
Windows 98se
Pentium 4
Memory--256MB Ram
CPU--1600 MHz
Disk Space--3600
Video--800x600 High Color
Bios Date--5/25/03

I would like to know, what I should use?
XP Home Upgrade or XP Home Full Edition.

Also if I wanted to upgrade to 512MB Ram,
How would I do it and what slot would the card go into?

Thank-You
John God
What does "Disk Space--3600" mean? Exactly what display adapter/video card do you have?

You can work with 256MB of RAM but you'll be HAPPIER with 512MB. Is your 256MB comprised of one 256MB module, 2 - 128MB, or what? How many slots do you have? Visit www.crucial.com and use their Memory Advisor™ Tool to get some info on your system. The Upgrade Disc is fine, but you should have some disc with the full OS, so if you still have your 98sc disc then I suggest getting an upgrade disc. That MACHINE would be FAR happier with the additional RAM soybean mentioned and Win2K instead of XP...
It's almost XP without the eye-candy and in my OPINION the most stable OS the Mothership has ever released....

Plus with the money you would save from buying XP the RAM upgrade would be basically Free.

Food for Thought.Has 3 slots. One 256mb module.
Not sure of display/video.
36gb space left.Well, you can easily increase your RAM and still use what you have. That's good. And, you have enough disk space. So, you should have no problem running Win XP, or go with W2K as patio suggested. Thanks for your input.
My son has W2K.
My wife has 98SE.
I want XP HOME.
But I want to do it the right way.
Thanks Again
JohnThere isn't much in XP that is not in Win2K...but if you insist on XP take soybeans suggestion above...

Solve : Audio And Video Problem?

Answer»

I just finished fixing my girlfriends computer with a similar PROBLEM.

Firstly navigate to windows\system32 and then look for sndvol32.exe if this is not here then that's your first problem, you need to GET a copy of this file from a friend or off the net (i suggest a friend as you know its safe.) If it is there then open it and CHECK all your settings to make sure nothing is muted.

Again like others have said be sure to use decent anti-virus software. Scan your system and ensure that there is no virus on it.

Uninstall then re-install windows media player. Try to play a song. If it still doesn't WORK remove all your music and then add it back in again. I did all this and it fixed the problem.

The ANTIVIRUS i use is AntiVir - never had a problem.

As for the video issue, i can't help you there.

Hope i've given some assistance

How do i do it?.So, you're booting from the Dell restore CD? Is that right? I believe you should see some options on an initial screen. What are they?I am on my computer i put the disc in and it shows this http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c199/P3RFECT/?action=view&current=1-1.jpg

No, put in the disc, i.e. CD, and then restart. Does it boot from the CD?I have put in the disc and restarted and nothing special happens. It doesn't say anymore where i can restart the pc on the disc menu program thing.

Isn't DBan easier? just delete and install windows disc.
Instead of changing motherboard stuff. How do u do it anyways.Go to the link I provided in my last post. It tells you how to access the BIOS.

A computer can boot from a hard drive, a floppy drive, a CD drive, and, if the BIOS allows it, a USB device. Like many COMPUTERS, your computer is apparently set to look for the hard drive first when booting. You need to access the BIOS and change that. Then, once you've formatted your hard drive and reinstalled Windows, you can set hard drive back to initial boot device. What do i exactly do? restart pc and look for partition?Do you mean to access the BIOS?

Solve : Windows Start-up problem?

I'm Using windows XP.

When i turn on my computer I get all the way to the Start-up menu, then within 1-2 secs it restarts; rinse and repeat. Then i hit f8 to GO to safe MODE, or last known good setting. When i push up or down on my keyboard it doesnt move, so all i can do is wait and the time runs out. nothing is wrong with my keyboard i couldnt move it up yesterday either, except my computer actually worked. What happened before this started?
What protection do you have?
When was the last time the PC was cleaned?
What kind of keyboard do you have?I'm not sure what happend, last thing i got was a playstation emulator. which i got from a clean site. I also had to get a BIOS file for it too, but thats used only in the Playstation folder.

I'm not sure what could be wrong, im really careful about what i put on my computer. I know my keyboard has nothing to do with it, ive switched and used other ones.

i used spybot search and destroy about a month ago, my computer has ran fine this whole time, up until now.

when i log on i get a message SAYING something along the lines of an update was installed, but i cant see what it is because shuts off by thenYou need more protection than SpyBot...

DLoad, install, update and run the following :

AVG Free
AdAware
AVG Anti-Spyware.

These are all free and will give you a well rounded protection package.

Next i would uninstall the emulator to eliminate it as the culprit and then re-boot and see if the condition still exists.

How old is the machine and what make and wattage rating is the power supply in there ?i cant delete anything ATM, my problem is when i start up my computer it gets all the way to the start menu and all of my icons show up, then 1 secs later the machine completely restarts. and will continue to do so until i turn it off.

its a new computer, im not sure about the wattage, my cousin built it for me. nor do i know how to find that out for you.Look on the power supply inside the machine. It should be labeled with the manufacturer and the wattage. How old is it?Re-boot into safemode if you can...this is done by tapping F8 repeatedly on startup before the windows logo shows.
Once in there go to Control Panel/System/Advanced and Startup and Recovery...un check "automatically restart on errors" which is on by default.
Now when the system encounters a problem you should get the wonderful BSOD...write down any erroro messages and post them here which will help narrow down the problem.Quote from: patio on May 25, 2007, 04:45:23 PM

Solve : Windows XP Pro won't boot?

Answer»

Hi. I'm RUNNING a Win Xp Pro system, it's a 7 year old system with 1.6 gb ram, 60gb hd. I'd have more specs but I cannot GET the system up.

I was online the other day and doing music work in Logic 4.7, when my whole computer shut down. I rebooted and it was terribly slow. I noticed a message regarding a FILE C:\Windows\Prefetch. I shut down and chkdsk started automatically. The chkdsk took an unusually long time, going through lots of files. After that, I have nothing. I can access the bios, which recognizes the drive.

So I inserted the Win XP Pro cd to do a recovery console. It locates everything fine and locates my c:\windows file (in Dos only). The next dos prompt asked me for a ADMINISTRATOR password. No administrator profile on the computer. I pressed enter and got to the dos prompt.

I did "dir" and noticed several file entries from the day of the crash:

6/03/07 3:08p 0 .
6/03/07 3:08p 0 ..
6/03/07 4:09p 1238 win.ini
6/03/07 8:00p 0 winadebug.log
6/03/07 8:00p 48 wiaseruc.log

6/03/07 12:46p 4328 ModemLog_Lucent winmodem.txt

6/04/07 7:23a 2048 bootstat.dat

Those are the only entries from the day of the crash. SINCE the drive looks fine and healthy I was hoping there was something I can do instead of reformating the drive altogether.

Thanks. Please help if you can.

Solve : Computer freezes shortly after start-up, cannot identify cause?

Answer»

This problem started a couple of years ago, when playing a game (specifically Doom 3) the computer invariably froze (he length of time varied 5-30 mins approx). Since then this problem (if it is the same problem) has progressed and now the computer regularly (approx. every other startup) freezes shortly after starting. Often this happens before I click anything.

* This problem is especially noticeable when starting Windows Live Messenger which works sometimes, but more often than not freezes the computer once logged in (I have reinstalled it, to no avail).

* Another possible signpost is the inability to run the latest version of Internet Explorer, which reports an 'Internet Explorer has encountered a problem etc. etc.' message.

* Sometimes, Windows Media PLAYER reports a possible plugin error and disables them (the optional plugins I have there are last.fm and MSN Now Playing.

* The last possible signpost is what I THINK is the CD drive making a strange grinding noise ever so often...

The computer was basically rebuilt by a friend of mine shortly before the problem started; he put in a new video card, RAM and motherboard. When asked about the problem, he said something to me about 'clocking' and talked about the BIOS, but was never specific. Since then I have installed a new HDD, but do not see this as a likely problem.

OS: XP SP2 Home ed.
Manufacturer: VIA Tech.
Model: PT800-8237
BIOS: Phoenix AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz
RAM: 512MB (SD I think)
Video: Sapphire Radeon 9250 128MB
Sound: SB Live! Wave Device

Not sure if this problem is resolvable, and expect it could be complex, but it seems to be deteriorating, and so I thought I should try to get advice while I should.
does it freeze during the load screen just after statrtup or after logging in?Quote from: ms_dos_sux on June 02, 2007, 06:47:55 AM

does it freeze during the load screen just after statrtup or after logging in?

Once logged in - while desktop is loading and things are getting started (i.e. once programs that load at startup are starting e.g. virus protection)

However, it freezes within about the first five minutes of starting. Only rarely does it freeze after five minutes or so.Start / run / msconfig/ disable all but necessary programs that start when Windows does / reboot and see if it still locks up. If not, then one of the startup programs is the offender and must be determined by trial-and-error.

Alan <>< also what protections do you have?

does this still happen in safe mode(rapidly press f8 before windows loads)??Protection as in virus protection? NORTON AntiVirus 2005....
and Windows Firewall I think...

Thanks for the advice, I will try it out ASAP.do you still have a SUBSCRIPTION to norton?? if not you might want to remove it and get AVG freeFunny you should say that - I did that very thing yesterday and got AVG upon recommendation from a friend - it's found loads of stuff that Norton hadn't so far... Perhaps this could be the problem?

Thanks for the advice.

EDIT: Does Norton have to be removed on the way shown on the link?yes to remove it completely

Solve : Resolved: XP Folder Problems?

new to the forums, but am an intermediate pc user. My computer is older, and is having some issues, but the most aggravating is being able to open a folder in an existing window. No matter what SETTING I go in and change, nothing happens. I go to tools and "folder options" and change it to "open in existing window" but nothing happens. Any ideas?

Thanks.

In Folder Options, have you tried to SET the general tab to display it in the same window, thats with a browser style box, back and forward button?

Are you using the regular Windows Folders, or are you exploring folders and files? Are you saying that when you click a folder it is opening in a separate window, or that it is not opening at all?okay fixed the problem. Solve : Unknown firewall blocking program?

Answer»

My system told me that I had a firewall but I don't know what firewall it is?Can anybody teach me how to detect the firewall and delete it because certain programs
I can't open as the firewall is blocking it. Are you the only user of this computer?
If not, ask the other user(s) about what firewall is INSTALLED.
If you're the only user, then it's unlikely that you have installed a firewall without knowing it.

What OS do you have? Windows XP? If so, and you have Service Pack 2 installed, then you would have Windows Firewall on your computer.

It's never a good idea to get rid of a firewall because it helps keep you protected.

What programs are being blocked? With a little more info, perhaps we can help you understand how to use the firewall so you can allow certain programs to run.I think I installed the Symantec firewall recently and sometime I disable it when it startup. But it still does not work I am using Win Xp home but EVERYTIME I try to execute the program it does not work it tell me to send the report to microsoft and I tried to remove it out of my system but to no avail.I also disable the windows firewall but still they told me that other firewall is still on.So the symantec firewall I deleted everything from its file so what is wrong?Let me get this straight...do you mean you are getting error MESSAGES like the one in the attached image?

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]No.But what is wrong?I know a firewall is used to block unnessary stuff but I was just planning to use windows firewall after deleting the it as some of the programs I am trying to use cannot connect to its server.
Go to the Control Panel

There you will find "windows firewall".

Open it, what does it say.It is currently off.But the idicator is still saying that I got some kind of firewall use.Which indicatorThe Windows Firewall indicator it says that Windows detected one or more firewall running but I already close the Windows firewall already! And you don't know what other firewall(s) you have active? You can post a HijackThis log, which would show us any active firewalls (besides Windows Firewall). There are other methods, of course, but this is my preference.

Solve : Shutdown Error: ieSHaZ+f9ylzOJOIX/ur7A10+default...?

Answer»

Hi. I just googled and got this forum. I am getting a shut down error when my computer begins to freeze up and I have to reboot. This has been happening the last couple of weeks; my computer has been running very slowly: the CPU easily reaches 100% and the 512 DDR Ram hits 90-100% easily until the computer is no longer usable.

I get the following error when shutting down:

ieSHaZ+f9ylzOJOIX/ur7A10+default...

I have defragged, run Windows Defender, SpyBot Search and Destroy, LavaSoft AdAware (no spyware, just cached cookies); I use, update and test daily with my antivirus AVG Free Edition. I have a Lynksys Wireless Router which is a good hardware firewall. I have WindowsXProfessional. I use the latest updated FIREFOX Browser and don't use IE, although IE6 is on the computer (I refuse to download IE7).

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Richard L.Do you have AIM enabled to load on startup? If so, try disabling it and see if that helps.

This may not be the problem, but it's the easiest thing to try.Need...more...info...gasp

Service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <>< Hi Chris and Ale52. Thank you so much for your responses.

I discovered that AIM sits in the system tray when I boot WinXPPro, so I have disabled that function.

I have the latest Service Pack 2 and all updates (except IE7).

Here are the specs for my Powerspec 8920 computer (Micro Center's brand), bought in June 2002:

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.40GHz

Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Edition

System Board: Intel® D845EBG2

System Memory:512MB composed of 2 - 256MB DDR266 SDRAM 184-pin DIMMs

MadDog Conqueror Nvidia FX5200 Plus Graphics Card

The problems started occurring I guess (but not sure) either Mar or Apr and have GRADUALLY GOTTEN worse. Before then, all worked fine. The only new ITEM in the Systray is the small utility MemInfo, added Sat. June 2nd (see below).

Items in SysTray:

Logitech Quickcam10, AVG Antivirus Free Edition-Control Center; Window Blinds 4.5; Post-It Notes Lite; Webshots; Live Weatherbug; Yahoo Widgets (without the Dock); and a small utility called MemInfo 1.80 (Service Release 3; as of Saturday June 2).

I have closed various items to see if any of the above are significantly draining the memory, but they all seem to individually not having much affect. When I do open Firefox, my CPU usage jumps to 100%.

I have a CD program that I use called Chant the Bible which, when in use, uses 100% CPU...functions, but a little slow.

Contrary to false statements Weatherbug does *not* contain spyware or adware.

At the moment with the latest Firefox Browser opened (with 29 tabs open), my Memory Usage is 81%.

Advice requested: I checked into replacing my Memory with two 512 DDR RAM 2700 (333Mgz) for a total of 1 Gig. Should I do this? That is what I found at the computer store.

Also, I run Windows Defender, SpyBot Search and Destroy, and Lavasoft Adaware weekly and update and Test AVG Antivirus daily.

I certainly appreciate the friendliness of this forum and both of your quick responses! All advice is greatly appreciated, since I'm not a "techie" (although I do occasionally use Linux: Mandriva 2006 on Desktop, soon to be changed to 2007 Spring, on a separate harddrive).

Richard L.

Although more memory would be a good idea, I don't know if it would solve your problem here. Are you familiar with msconfig?

Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig and hit Enter.
Click on the Startup tab and uncheck any mention of AIM. Click OK and restart.
If that doesn't fix it, then try unchecking your Logitech startup files.

AIM (especially since 6.0) and Logitech webcams are both common causes of an ieshaz error.

Windows Blinds also tends to cause problems for some people, however I don't know whether or not that applies in this case.Hi Chris,

I got an update/reinstallation for the Logitech camera, then I did msconfig and unchecked all startup files for the Logitech camera. (I had already disabled AIM 6.0 at startup.

Also, when I was at Micro Center looking at memory, the salesguy said that I could upgrade from the 266 mhz to the 333 mhz. He said that with memory you could go one step up or down. It's now hard to find the 266 mhz.

Can you...or anyone... confirm this before I buy any new memory?

MANY thanks,

Richard L.

Solve : More IE70 - XP? problems?

Answer»

Having run around a bit in IE70 (running XP + SP2) I decided to go back to 6.0, but when I used the official removeprogram, CLICKING on remove IE70 only was followed by the action that XP started to CLOSE down and restarted?? Trying to use the brute way to just delete it in the programfiles only gives the well known XPbuxx "wont do it"....what now?

Startproblem was that IE70 all of a sudden made all the Internetsites unavailable....msn, mailsites etc, Outlook EXPRESS though still worked fortunately...what now?

I couldnt even check the XP Firewall(MS said: cant connect to firewall ...etcetc) and my Sygate doesnt reveal any "no"'s and as a CONSEQUENCE my AVG Antivirusprotection fails to start up...

Spyboot said no problems visible...and for those who wonder...I'm writing this from good old W2K where everything still works... (gratefull to myself I kept it running)

Tried to repair XP, but that option wont show, just the "I wont do it" buzz from old XP....

oh and by the way, it takes now twice as long to get XP started than with W2K??!!!!!!!!!sounds like you have too much loaded on your computer and either they don't like ie7 or ie7 didn't like them. Stuff is causing conflicts with other stuff.... Do you have a lot of programs installed on your pc?
I would probably recommend that you reinstall windows. (it's probably the easiest way to go;)
ie7 is a crock. FOLKS, don't go there!

Solve : Uninstalling Programs?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP SP2 . Can not uninstall AVG anti-virus program from avg uninstall icon OR control center . If i highlight avg in control panel windows tries to INSTALL avg firewall & says it can't before disabling windows firewall , though avg firewall is already installed & functional . Any suggestions appreciated .

Thankscdo...

If you're using AVG's firewall, then Windows firewall should be disabled.

Go into the Security center through your Control Panel.

Make sure Window's firewall is turned off.

Now...try and uninstal AVG through the Control Panel.

Once it's uninstalled...turn the Window's firewall back on.

Please post back with results, please.Actually, you have to disable the protectionin the system tray and THEN uninstall it.

If you have done this already, try reinstalling and THEN uninstalling.

Out of curiosity, why do you want it off and what are you planning to use?Quote from: GX1_Man on May 26, 2007, 09:54:09 PM

Out of curiosity, why do you want it off and what are you planning to use?
This is what I'd like to know too...Here is a method directly from the AVG Forums:

Quote
Try the following with a fresh copy of the install file. This is the preferred method for uninstall / re-install....

1. Download & save [never to Desktop or My Documents] to a folder on C drive (remember whereabouts) the latest AVG Free installation package from [free.grisoft.com]
2. Check the download file MD5 hash value [forum.grisoft.cz]
3. If it is correct run the AVG Free install file
4. Choose the Uninstall option and follow the setup wizard, when you get to the part to remove user settings, select it.
5. Restart your computer then...
6. Now reinstall AVG using the setup file you got in step 1 and update it....

OK... here are some general install tips to follow...

Download the install file to your computer... do not ever try to run from the internet as that will always cause issues. We also recommend that you do not run if from a directory with spaces in the name.. such as your Desktop or My Documents folders...

Spybot S&D has a feature called TeaTimer & AdAware has Adwatch. If these are enabled it can affect the installation of AVG. We always recommend temporarily disabling these before installing....& restart the computer twice before re-enabling.

Many users don't disable the other protection programs as they should so they can STOP AVG from installing properly.... such as Windows Defender can stop AVG from adding in its required startup items. We always recommend temporarily disabling before installing....& restart the computer twice before re-enabling

Note that they suggest disabling your other protection programs...i would disconnect from the web for this step.I removed AVG because i was having alot of " hang up " issues . Using Windows One Care at present and it seems to work better . Thanks for the suggestions on removing . As usual the forum "knows"..

Next QUESTION may be silly but what the heck i am GOOD at that ..

I notice that every time i go to Help on XP and click Advanced System Information i get a different reading for my Available Physical Memory . Is this normal ? I saw a post somewhere that said physical memory does not change . just wondering.May have to do with the use of integrated/onboard video.Quote
I removed AVG because i was having alot of " hang up " issues . Using Windows One Care at present and it seems to work better . Thanks for the suggestions on removing .

If this is happening then i suspect the machine has other issues. Reason i say this is out of most Anti-Virus programs AVG is one of the least demending on system resources when scanning....probably in the Top Five.

So to get to the bottom of this post as much info as you can FIND on your system etc and list all the current security apps you have and we can go from there...A good read:

Solve : serial code problem!?

OK, so, basically I had a VERY bad day and was struggling with my Dell 3200 (i know its old, but it gets me through school...). I had installed Windows XP on it a year or two ago, but it was updating during a storm and the power went out and it messed up the operating system. So, after moving I got rid of my copy Windows XP but to my luck i had the copy of Windows 98 that came with it, the only problem is i dont have the serial anymore... Windows doesn't run support for 98 anymore, so is there a way I can get one, or am i screwed completely, CAUSE i dont have $100, or however much it cost. Anyway, please help me i would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you

Noxy.... It is indeed unfortunate that you no longer have your XP cd ...... or that you have lost the product serial code for your win 98.......
But to use your own words , "so is there a way I can get one, or am i screwed completely" ....... good heavens no, you have several options.
1.... Contact Dell and get replacement install/restore cds from them .
2.... Look for a legit replacement o/s c/w product code on Ebay......

Just remember these words....... " Cheer up things could be worse"

dl65
My Windows 98 install disk had a CD cover which had the serial number printed on it, underneath it said "Do not lose this number!" I did three things. 1. I copied the disk in CASE the first one got damaged. 2. I got my CD PEN and wrote that number on both disks. 3. I always put the disk back in the right jewel case after use.

Solve : Formatting Hard Disk?

Answer»

I have two Win XP installed by mistake on two different partitions namely C:and D:. Now, I want to format both these partitions and INSTALL freshly WinXP on C: only. I used a win98 boot from floppy and got A: prompt. I typed " Format C:". It says unsupported format in C:. How should I format. Please give step-by-step Instruction. Thanks!use the XP install CD and get it to format the partition it is going onto.
Assuming you have a valid Windows XP CD...

For step by step INSTRUCTIONS, please visit the following page at Microsoft and scroll down until you see "How to partition and format your hard disk by using the Windows XP Setup program":

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348

Pay special ATTENTION to Step 7:

7. All the existing partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partition or the unpartitioned space where you want to create a new partition. Press D to delete an existing partition, or press C to create a new partition by using unpartitioned space. If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. REPEAT this step for each of the existing partitions that you want to use for the new partition. When all the partitions are deleted, select the remaining unpartitioned space, and then press C to create the new partition.

Solve : Managing user accounts in XP?

Answer»

I have separate user ACCOUNTS for myself and my boys, both are admin accounts b/c they are forever downloading games and it wouldn't let them download anything with the LIMITED setting. My problem is, whatever they download shows up on my desktop and if I delete it then it deletes it from their desktop as well. How do I prevent this? With all the viruses, spyware and assorted mayhem out there, I'd change their status from admin to limited user account. Reason...with children it's hard to know what they will DOWNLOADED and install. That WAY you have control what is downloaded.

What I have done is create a folder on the root directory (C:\) called "Desktop Programs", then put a shortcut on the desktop to that folder. Next, I put the shortcut to any program that creates a desktop icon in the "Desktop Programs" folder. That unclutters your desktop. Your desktop is then cleaned up and theirs can have all the stuff on it they want.

I only run one profile on my system (no children) and my wife has her own computer.

Alan <>< I understand what you are saying about the viruses and spyware, etc. I will most likely have to change the status of that account at some point in the NEAR future, however, for right now, the only websites they download from are nick.com, cartoonnetwork.com, and sites such as that which I trust. Thank you for your advice.

Solve : Unwanted Sounds- unkown source?

Answer»

Yesterday afternoon, I went on the computer like any other time i would, did noting different than i normally would, and all of a sudden, i hear this "boop beep, boop beep" sound. Its usually the sound heard when a window pops up, or an alert window, or something along those lines, but nothing popped up. It continued and continued, and is still going on right now. I have tried deleting temporary internet files, and COOKIES, which made it stop for a little while, but then it began again. I did a spyware/trojan scan, and a virus scan, and yet still nothing. I have restarted my computer, and also that did nothing. I also tried to see if it was something with the speakers, by going to control panel>> sounds and audio devices, but that did not help. I dont know what else to do. Can someone please help me?That sound could be an alarm from the motherboard....sometimes indicating a fan failure or other problem.
Stop using the machine to prevent further damage. If you are unfamiliar with the inner workings of your computer have someone who is take a look inside.o: come to think of it....

The fan did make a big wooooshing sound that wouldnt stop untill i turned off the computer. Is there anything else i can do?

I dont hear the fan running now...

The motherboard was just replaced THOUGH.
Is there anything else it MIGHT be?

Edit: The fan is running... and my computer doesnt feel hot, or overheated or anything.

There are more than one fans in a computer. Remove all power sources whenever working inside a computer.
Remove a side panel and or the case itself to be able to see them all.
Who replaced the MBoard ? ?
If the work is under warranty i would certainly consider this option. The computer was sent off to Compaq to get it replaced. It was only just 3 DAYS ago.

I did take the side panel off, and i did unplug all power sources.

Currently, i dont hear the sound, and im wondering why.

Im very confused right now, and now, i haven't a clue what could be the problem, or what to do if it starts up again.Just to make sure i understand correctly...the machine we are talking about now is a replacement for one that was returned to Compaq ? ?

You may be going thru that process again.

I know it's a hassle but something still is not right. No, the computer right now is the one that was sent off to compaq to be fixed, and i just got it back 3 days ago.
The sound seems to have stopped though, and im not sure why it stopped, or what it was from in the first place. I hope it doesnt come back... At any RATE check your documentation for info on MBoard alarms to determine what it may have been...Oh! i think i know what it was....

I went to use my pen tablet about 30 minutes ago, and it didnt work. Then, i unplugged it, and plugged it back in, and then the beeping stopped, and my pen tablet worked. o:

You think that could have been it?

In my mail *on that site* - not my real email account - I got a message from a girl in which she gave me her real email. But then her subscription ran out and that message was deleted from my messages on that site - and I never wrote down her real email.

I've already contacted the dating site by phone and they say there's nothing they can do.

I've also looked in History, but that just links to the page, which of course is now blank because she's no longer a member.

Deep down in my system, is it retrievable somehow? Is there anything I can ask my ISP to do?

Is there ANYTHING I can do to possibly view that screen again and see the email address in the text of that message? If it has been erased there is no way of getting back ........

Tony Sooo,You can't FIND your prrreeccciooousss! Bwahahaha!

ROBERT yeah you can't see a previous screen, images aren't in the history, or there'd be millions.
there may be a way the site was CACHED, but i doubt it, as it was a site that NEEDS membership.
sorry dude.I think you're just going to have to hope she likes you enough to make another account and get ahold of you again.Quote from: CBMatt on July 30, 2007, 05:45:25 PM

Solve : website logging in problems?

Answer»

I am having problems LOGGING into some of the websites I go to. Some would not take my original password and when I had a new one sent to me when I try to log in it just takes me right back to the log in screen. I thought it was just a certain website doing it at first but then found out I was having the same problem on others. I tried using the wrong password to see what would happen but then it would tell me the password was wrong but when I put in the right password it just takes me right back to the login screen like I said. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I am really stumped on this one!1. What internet browser are you using?
2. Have you cleared your internet cache lately?I am using windows internet explorer and yes I have cleared all my cookies and temp internet files more then once. I can log in on different computers but still not on mine and it is gettting frustrating. I really don't know what else to do. Any help still is greatly appreciated!Sometimes this happens when you have internet explorer set to remember my password and USERNAME. Try logging in when the remember me check box isn't checked and the internet explorer setting is changed. It should work.

If not you can try going to www.computer-help.110mb.com . They may have an article about this. I'm not sure though.Quote from: thecompguy723 on July 30, 2007, 07:12:09 PM

Sometimes this happens when you have internet explorer set to remember my password and username.
which is dictated by the cookies.
he said he cleared the cookies.
CLEAR your temporary internet files. as in, cookies and cache, and look for a ''forgot your password'' link.Actually that isn't true reaper_tbs. IE (and any other modern browser for that MATTER) have an internal "list" that it can store usernames and passwords too. So when your browser asks you if you want to save your details for a site, that has nothing to do with cookies. Cookies just allow you to stay logged in to a site.that's odd... i must be stuck with the past
thanks for the info deerpark
sorry for the misinformation buddies.
but still, i recommend you look for anything like a ''forgotten your password?'' link on the siteI have used the forgotten my password thing and can log on on other computers just not mine. Is there a way to change my computer if it is suppose to remember my password? I have cleared my cookies and temp internet files again but still nothing. It only seems to be doing it on the websites also that I have used the forgotten password thing. That is weird. Any help still would be greatly appreciated.

( I am a female by the way) lolHere's the method for removing stored passwords in IE:

To delete stored passwords in Internet Explorer:
• Select "Tools"
• Select "Internet Options".
• Open the "Content" tab.
• Click the "AutoComplete" button.
• Click the "Clear Passwords".

If the password file somehow got corrupted it may not be logging you in properly...
The next time you login with it it should work.

Warning ! MAKE sure you have all the passwords you need to remember before trying this method.

guys get back on topics

Tony

well! i think we should get back on topic, but there's only one, tony. notice you made the word topic a plural changing my whole sentence for you reaper !! good boy
so is the problem that was the topic solved?nope hasn't been solved yet ..... we need the make of his mobo to get him the latest drivers but he doesn't know the model or make ....... doesnt want to attempt a re-format which is understandable.... just need some more information to help this chap.

Tony i see... this chap could open his case and look around the RAM slots/cpu slots etc. for the ''tag'' or the printing with the mobo specs...
Yh he could do....... its not something i particularly WISH to do, and last time i tried i was unable too

its a Dell computer ha halol well all you really need to do is take off the side part of the case, and look at the motherboard. move whatever cables out of the way aswell. you don't need to connect/disconnect anything either. everything should be fine if you don't touch anything that looks like it shouldn't be touched Quote from: reaper_tbs on July 26, 2007, 02:58:43 PM

Ok going on what reaper just said .......... im gonna say this once and once only , you can touch anything you want in side your computer addecpt THE MOTHERBOARD AND ITS COMPONENTS BE SURE YOU ARE GROUNDED correctly do not do this on any type of fabric do it on the floor boards or garden well garden is a good idea if its not raining Trust me noting will go wrong just write down the large print on the motherboard there well be a NAME of your board and a number maybe even a serial number doesnt matter just see what you can get.......
uhh.... that's a good idea, but write down everything including a serial number if it's there, just make sure you don't post the serial number. not really a great idea. the rest though, of course.
the serial number should be away from the other information.

Solve : Hardware/Software Question?

Answer»

Had a virus hit windows xp couple years ago and it crashed but I managed to get everything running again. Only problem is that there seems to be 2 of everything now. I cant figure out what I did nor which to delete. QUESTION is, if i add another hard DRIVE and transfer most of my software and information to it, can I wipe the original hard drive, start over, and RETRANSFER all the material. This is really bogging and slowing down everything we do on the computer.Quote from: doc_jh on July 30, 2007, 09:03:28 PM

I assume you intend to format and reinstal your OS on the original hard drive so the answer is Yes, but all your programs will also need to be reinstalled not just copied.

Solve : Autonumber filnames?

Answer»

I have a user who goes in, USES a Word template, does a "Save as", and the document is saved with the same name as the template, but automatically tags the file with a number that is numerically one after the PREVIOUS one named the same THING. It did it automatically, and now it doesn't. NEVER heard of this. How do I set this up to do it again?

Thanks.

Solve : Firewall help?

Answer»

When I started the day my COMPUTER was running fine. I went into itunes to sync my ipod before I went to the gym and before I did that I UPDATED my version of itunes. Everything went well until I rebooted.

When it rebooted the firewall shut itself off and I can't turn it back on. It's the same with automatic updates. Both are turned off and can't be turned on. Itunes is also screwed up now. I can't access it, uninstall it or re-install it. I get an ERROR message that a target could not be found. Apple, E-machines or Microsoft are not willing to help. They all refer me to the next.

Any help WOULD be appreciated.

BTW I already tried system restore in regular and safe mode and the firewall is still disabled.what firewall? what windows do you have? what anti-virus and anti-malware programs do you have?
