Solve : Full screen in IE? |
|
Answer» Is there any way to configure IE to open new tabs in full screen? When you say Full Screen, do you mean as though F11 was toggled? If so, I do not believe so, no.XP and IE remembers your preference for screen size. XP and IE remembers the size you requested the last two or three times. ( Pop-up ads can change the selection. ) Is there any way to configure IE to open new tabs in full screen? « on: Today at 12:38:59 PM » Super Dave asked: "Is there any way to configure IE to open new tabs in full screen?" Mr Allen: What did Super Dave ask? ________________________________ p.s My interpretation of the question is correct.I believe he's asking if a new tab (not IE itself) can be opened full screen, as though the F-11 key were toggled. I may be mistaken, but that's what it seems. Anyway, that's what I asked in my first post above.Quote from: Allan on October 25, 2009, 01:41:55 PM I believe he's asking if a new tab (not IE itself) can be opened full screen, as though the F-11 key were toggled. I may be mistaken, but that's what it seems. Anyway, that's what I asked in my first post above. Allan, I suspect you are correct. Too bad SuperDave does not respond. I don't completely understand how Tabs works. A new window is not required but we can return to the old information. If the current screen is full screen ( not F11 ) would the new tab be full screen ( not necessarily Max )?In fact it does, you are absolutely correct . So now I really have no idea what he's askingunless he wan't to open a tab full screen when IE is NOT full screen |

Solve : INVALID BOOT.INI FILE? |
|
Answer» Hello friends, while BOOTING, my windows show a line " Invalid BOOT.INI File, booting from C:\windows " and the system gets booted. What is the meaning of the above message. Is it a problem ? How to rectify this problem. PLEASE reply. When do you see that message? And it's unclear from your post if the system boots normally in SPITE of the message. If Boot.ini is MIA Ntldr will display the advisory message you spotted and automatically boot from the Windows folder in C: (in Win 2K it will boot from C:\Winnt) - this is a default selection in Ntldr. Booting will be successful provided there is an OS installed in C:\Windows or C:\Winnt |

Solve : Computer running slow after XP Re-install, HELP!? |
|
Answer» Hello all, 512 mb of RAMShould be adequate. I assume you reinstalled anti-virus. It's unclear why it would be so slow immediately after a REINSTALL. Next do disk cleanup with: CCleaner Do the cleaner tab once and the registry tab a few TIMES until it's less than 1 or 2 items. Then do a disk defrag with: Defraggler Inspiron 5100 Owner's ManualQuote from: billrich on October 24, 2009, 04:43:49 PM The HD might not be clean. The CPU jumps between 5% to 15%. but doesn't go over 15% (at the moment) I typically just have my messenger and firefox running, and it's super slow LOADING most websites. I know it's not the internet. The HD was copletely wiped before I installed XP. Just don't understand why it ran faster before it was wiped. I have the full version of AVG, it scans every morning, no problems there.Firefox and IE have to "rebuild" the temporary files and will be slower loading websites. I think Firefox may be more susceptable to this, but I run Firefox Portable, so it's not a fair comparison. Surf around for a day or two and see if it speeds up. I ran a test on a brand new install of Firefox Portable and it took forever to load anything. Now, when I update, it only overwrites the executables and not the bookmarks or history or temp files.1. Installation Media. What media did you reinstall Windows XP from: a. Recovery/Restore Partition b. OEM Recovery/Restore CD c. OEM Install CD d. Microsoft Retail Install CD 2. Process Explorer. Instead of Task Manager, use the program Microsoft should have provided - Process Explorer from SysInternals (now owned by Microsoft). It will give you a better view of what's going on with your system. Look for processes and/or services that don't need to be running. (In other words review and cleanup list of third party software that automatically runs at system startup.) 3. Autoruns. The Autoruns program from SysInternals is one of many "free" programs you may use to control what runs at system startup. (Or you can use "Startup" tab of Microsoft utility "msconfig". Access via "Start -> Run -> type "msconfig", select OK -> select Startup tab".)You said you downloaded and installed all of the drivers, but did you first install the chipset driver? |

I typed it just like you said. You might have a more serious PROBLEM that can't be corrected without a windows CD. There are some things you can try. Boot from the floppy. At the A:> prompt, type sys c: . This will refresh the SYSTEM files. Try the copy command again. Make sure you are using a backward slash in the command. It does matter.tried the copy files it SAYS himem.sys file not found. tried sys c: at A:\> prompt, again bad command. You will need to obtain a Win98 SE CD to continue...Quote from: GX1_Man on April 18, 2007, 04:39:05 AM I think you are stuck without an operating system CD. |

Solve : Windows 200 delete with WinXP installed..?? |
|
Answer» Hi. I recenly "downloaded" a copy of XP from a P2P software and made the CD, all is well only cannot boot from CD..... Ok, so I installed WinXP but when the setup began I tried to delete the main partition where Win2000 is installed and it SAYS I cant because some TEMP. setup files are on the partition.. So I installed XP anyways.. Now I have both XP and Win2000 and I really want to delete Win2000, but cant do it, cant delete partition or anything.... Any help would be appreciated. ThanksI have been told by someone that this is a simple procedure, but it seems a little complicated.....seeing as how I cant accomplish it..... would making setup disks (3.5 floppys) for win XP help with the problem of Deleting the partition??? thanksGet a legitimate version of XP and we'll help. Not only is this illegal, but your copy is probably corrupt and/or infected.O.K, I am aware of the "illegality" of such, however I have been opposed to installing WinXP for years as I do not liek the platform, and before investing the $$ I wanted to TRY and see how I liked it, but the fact that Win2000 is still installed is causing the system to run slow, and I am unable to properly "enjoy" XP's features... I dont BELIEVE the copy of XP iis infected or corrupt because it does work well on my computer....... Is there just a simple way to delete the older version of windows....?? thanksYou've been so opposed to it, but you want to use it to replace your current OS? Maybe somebody else will help you, but I'm out of this one. Thanks anyways my friend... lol, anyways, to all others, I simply need to know how to delete my older win2000 version with XP already installed... thanksravemeover .... Unfortunately, it goes against what this forum stands for to be assisting anyone to install pirated operating systems. If you obtain a legit copy of Windows XP and are still having difficulties, we will pleased to ASSIST you. |

Solve : Need Help Please :) (Computer Screen being sensentive)? |

Answer» Hi there It does sound like a failing monitor to me too, but more details would help narrow it down. This is what convinced me... Quote I have to bang on my monitor to make the size go back to normal. Could be a dodgy connection too. Failing monitor is much more likely though.Quote Could be a dodgy connection too. Good point, Calum. Wishywashy, you should wiggle the monitor cable to SEE if the problem comes and goes. If the cable has a plug at the monitor end, is it tight in its socket? If this an LCD, I'd try reseating the cable. They don't like not being totally secure. But like everyone's saying, your monitor may be going out.Banging on it is ALWAYS a good approach. Someone TOLD me to use DBan, is that good?I think your pc doesn't boot from CD, you should change CMOS setting to boot from CD first. You don't need DBan. Quote from: PC-onlinehelp.com on April 24, 2007, 12:49:39 PM I think your pc doesn't boot from CD, you should change CMOS setting to boot from CD first. How.Quote from: soybean on April 24, 2007, 12:50:09 PM You don't need DBan. You need to Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS and set CD-ROM as the initial boot device. Isn't DBan easier? just delete and install windows disc. Instead of changing motherboard stuff. How do u do it anyways.Go to the link I provided in my last post. It tells you how to access the BIOS. A computer can boot from a hard drive, a floppy drive, a CD drive, and, if the BIOS allows it, a USB device. Like many COMPUTERS, your computer is apparently set to look for the hard drive first when booting. You need to access the BIOS and change that. Then, once you've formatted your hard drive and reinstalled Windows, you can set hard drive back to initial boot device. What do i exactly do? restart pc and look for partition?Do you mean to access the BIOS? |

Solve : Computer freezes shortly after start-up, cannot identify cause? |
|
Answer» This problem started a couple of years ago, when playing a game (specifically Doom 3) the computer invariably froze (he length of time varied 5-30 mins approx). Since then this problem (if it is the same problem) has progressed and now the computer regularly (approx. every other startup) freezes shortly after starting. Often this happens before I click anything. does it freeze during the load screen just after statrtup or after logging in? Once logged in - while desktop is loading and things are getting started (i.e. once programs that load at startup are starting e.g. virus protection) However, it freezes within about the first five minutes of starting. Only rarely does it freeze after five minutes or so.Start / run / msconfig/ disable all but necessary programs that start when Windows does / reboot and see if it still locks up. If not, then one of the startup programs is the offender and must be determined by trial-and-error. Alan <>< also what protections do you have? does this still happen in safe mode(rapidly press f8 before windows loads)??Protection as in virus protection? NORTON AntiVirus 2005.... and Windows Firewall I think... Thanks for the advice, I will try it out ASAP.do you still have a SUBSCRIPTION to norton?? if not you might want to remove it and get AVG freeFunny you should say that - I did that very thing yesterday and got AVG upon recommendation from a friend - it's found loads of stuff that Norton hadn't so far... Perhaps this could be the problem? Thanks for the advice. EDIT: Does Norton have to be removed on the way shown on the link?yes to remove it completely |

Solve : Uninstalling Programs? |
|
Answer» I am running Windows XP SP2 . Can not uninstall AVG anti-virus program from avg uninstall icon OR control center . If i highlight avg in control panel windows tries to INSTALL avg firewall & says it can't before disabling windows firewall , though avg firewall is already installed & functional . Any suggestions appreciated . Out of curiosity, why do you want it off and what are you planning to use? This is what I'd like to know too...Here is a method directly from the AVG Forums: Quote Try the following with a fresh copy of the install file. This is the preferred method for uninstall / re-install.... Note that they suggest disabling your other protection programs...i would disconnect from the web for this step.I removed AVG because i was having alot of " hang up " issues . Using Windows One Care at present and it seems to work better . Thanks for the suggestions on removing . As usual the forum "knows".. Next QUESTION may be silly but what the heck i am GOOD at that .. I notice that every time i go to Help on XP and click Advanced System Information i get a different reading for my Available Physical Memory . Is this normal ? I saw a post somewhere that said physical memory does not change . just wondering.May have to do with the use of integrated/onboard video.Quote I removed AVG because i was having alot of " hang up " issues . Using Windows One Care at present and it seems to work better . Thanks for the suggestions on removing . If this is happening then i suspect the machine has other issues. Reason i say this is out of most Anti-Virus programs AVG is one of the least demending on system resources when scanning....probably in the Top Five. So to get to the bottom of this post as much info as you can FIND on your system etc and list all the current security apps you have and we can go from there...A good read: http://reviews.cnet.com/online-software-services/windows-live-onecare/4540-9239_7-31899024-4.html |

Solve : serial code problem!? |
|
Answer» OK, so, basically I had a VERY bad day and was struggling with my Dell 3200 (i know its old, but it gets me through school...). I had installed Windows XP on it a year or two ago, but it was updating during a storm and the power went out and it messed up the operating system. So, after moving I got rid of my copy Windows XP but to my luck i had the copy of Windows 98 that came with it, the only problem is i dont have the serial anymore... Windows doesn't run support for 98 anymore, so is there a way I can get one, or am i screwed completely, CAUSE i dont have $100, or however much it cost. Anyway, please help me i would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you PM'd you Wonder what it said, did it start with [code removed] by any chance? Thin ice, d00d! I don't like the looks of this thread... And Tony, I removed the code from your post. I know it was only partial, but it was enough to lead people in that path.Who's Tony? Quote from: contrex on June 04, 2007, 07:19:56 AM Who's Tony? Ha! They both have "on" in them... Noxy.... It is indeed unfortunate that you no longer have your XP cd ...... or that you have lost the product serial code for your win 98....... But to use your own words , "so is there a way I can get one, or am i screwed completely" ....... good heavens no, you have several options. 1.... Contact Dell and get replacement install/restore cds from them . 2.... Look for a legit replacement o/s c/w product code on Ebay...... Just remember these words....... " Cheer up things could be worse" dl65 My Windows 98 install disk had a CD cover which had the serial number printed on it, underneath it said "Do not lose this number!" I did three things. 1. I copied the disk in CASE the first one got damaged. 2. I got my CD PEN and wrote that number on both disks. 3. I always put the disk back in the right jewel case after use. |

The problem is resolved, so we can all sleep tight tonight.Contrex, he knows the command now, so the issue is over with. Get a grip. |

Solve : How do i fix my computer?? |
|
Answer» I am a sort of an advanced amataur with computers so i need a litlle help. I woke up one morning and there was a message, which i dont remember. It told me to reboot and when i did it began to say, "A problem with the hard drive has been detected. Consult the Troubleshooting sections of you user's manual. Press the Enter key to continue." When i press enter, however, it just goes to a BLANK screen with only a _ symbol and i can do nothing with it. Windows will not boot. I have tried to reboot the entire coputer and that has failed along with numerous other attempts to fix the problem. My question is, how can i fix my computer so that i may use it again? P.S at one point in time it stated that the error was something along this line, but i am not positve because i am trying to remember off the top of my head. "windows32/systemroot/____.dll... i dont remember what was in the blank spot. PLEASE HELP! Quote I have tried to reboot the entire coputer and that has failed along with numerous other attempts to fix the problem. What does this mean? What exactly did you try to do? What happened before this started?i tried to do a system reboot off of the OS disk, which failed, and i tried to just install a linux and that failed too, along with trying to repair with OS and Drivers disksIs your BIOS set to boot from CD first?i assume you mean Boot Device PRIORITY, then yes it says that the 1st priority is [ATAPI CD ROM] oh and i am almost positive now that it is a hal.dll problemAre you trying a complete format and REINSTALL?Quote from: itzjuzmeh on June 03, 2007, 12:28:09 PM oh and i am almost positive now that it is a hal.dll problem That's the symptom, not the problem. The "h" in "hal" stands for "hardware"... as in failed hard disk. ... well when i tried to boot once it gave me the "windows32/systemroot/hal.dll" error messageQuote from: itzjuzmeh on June 03, 2007, 01:20:53 PM ... well when i tried to boot once it gave me the "windows32/systemroot/hal.dll" error message Sometimes this is because the hard drive is failing. Quote from: street1 on June 03, 2007, 12:40:39 PM Are you trying a complete format and reinstall? no just trying to get it to work but i tried that and the same error came upHave you download the hard disk test and setup software from your hard drive manufacturer?-->LookHere i posted the same question on yahoo and someone gave me this message "probably windows32/systemroot/hal.dll It is part of the boot-up process. If you are using XP go to this link and download the XP boot disc and copy it a cd/disc then set your BIOS to boot from that source this should rectify any boot up errors. http://www.orbitfiles.com/download/id1542211217" what do you think about that? do you think it would work... seeing as this place is a little more RELIABLE than yahooQuote from: street1 on June 03, 2007, 01:25:21 PM Have you download the hard disk test and setup software to my KNOWLEDGE, no |

Solve : Unwanted Sounds- unkown source? |
|
Answer» Yesterday afternoon, I went on the computer like any other time i would, did noting different than i normally would, and all of a sudden, i hear this "boop beep, boop beep" sound. Its usually the sound heard when a window pops up, or an alert window, or something along those lines, but nothing popped up. It continued and continued, and is still going on right now. I have tried deleting temporary internet files, and COOKIES, which made it stop for a little while, but then it began again. I did a spyware/trojan scan, and a virus scan, and yet still nothing. I have restarted my computer, and also that did nothing. I also tried to see if it was something with the speakers, by going to control panel>> sounds and audio devices, but that did not help. I dont know what else to do. Can someone please help me?That sound could be an alarm from the motherboard....sometimes indicating a fan failure or other problem. |

Solve : website logging in problems? |
|
Answer» I am having problems LOGGING into some of the websites I go to. Some would not take my original password and when I had a new one sent to me when I try to log in it just takes me right back to the log in screen. I thought it was just a certain website doing it at first but then found out I was having the same problem on others. I tried using the wrong password to see what would happen but then it would tell me the password was wrong but when I put in the right password it just takes me right back to the login screen like I said. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I am really stumped on this one!1. What internet browser are you using? Sometimes this happens when you have internet explorer set to remember my password and username.which is dictated by the cookies. he said he cleared the cookies. CLEAR your temporary internet files. as in, cookies and cache, and look for a ''forgot your password'' link.Actually that isn't true reaper_tbs. IE (and any other modern browser for that MATTER) have an internal "list" that it can store usernames and passwords too. So when your browser asks you if you want to save your details for a site, that has nothing to do with cookies. Cookies just allow you to stay logged in to a site.that's odd... i must be stuck with the past thanks for the info deerpark sorry for the misinformation buddies. but still, i recommend you look for anything like a ''forgotten your password?'' link on the siteI have used the forgotten my password thing and can log on on other computers just not mine. Is there a way to change my computer if it is suppose to remember my password? I have cleared my cookies and temp internet files again but still nothing. It only seems to be doing it on the websites also that I have used the forgotten password thing. That is weird. Any help still would be greatly appreciated. ( I am a female by the way) lolHere's the method for removing stored passwords in IE: To delete stored passwords in Internet Explorer: • Select "Tools" • Select "Internet Options". • Open the "Content" tab. • Click the "AutoComplete" button. • Click the "Clear Passwords". If the password file somehow got corrupted it may not be logging you in properly... The next time you login with it it should work. Warning ! MAKE sure you have all the passwords you need to remember before trying this method. |

Tony Quote from: Richenstony on July 26, 2007, 02:25:24 PM guys get back on topics well! i think we should get back on topic, but there's only one, tony. notice you made the word topic a plural changing my whole sentence for you reaper !! good boy so is the problem that was the topic solved?nope hasn't been solved yet ..... we need the make of his mobo to get him the latest drivers but he doesn't know the model or make ....... doesnt want to attempt a re-format which is understandable.... just need some more information to help this chap. Tony i see... this chap could open his case and look around the RAM slots/cpu slots etc. for the ''tag'' or the printing with the mobo specs... Yh he could do....... its not something i particularly WISH to do, and last time i tried i was unable too its a Dell computer ha halol well all you really need to do is take off the side part of the case, and look at the motherboard. move whatever cables out of the way aswell. you don't need to connect/disconnect anything either. everything should be fine if you don't touch anything that looks like it shouldn't be touched Quote from: reaper_tbs on July 26, 2007, 02:58:43 PM lol well all you really need to do is take off the side part of the case, and look at the motherboard. move whatever cables out of the way aswell. you don't need to connect/disconnect anything either. everything should be fine if you don't touch anything that looks like it shouldn't be touchedOk going on what reaper just said .......... im gonna say this once and once only , you can touch anything you want in side your computer addecpt THE MOTHERBOARD AND ITS COMPONENTS BE SURE YOU ARE GROUNDED correctly do not do this on any type of fabric do it on the floor boards or garden well garden is a good idea if its not raining Trust me noting will go wrong just write down the large print on the motherboard there well be a NAME of your board and a number maybe even a serial number doesnt matter just see what you can get....... uhh.... that's a good idea, but write down everything including a serial number if it's there, just make sure you don't post the serial number. not really a great idea. the rest though, of course. the serial number should be away from the other information. |

Solve : Hardware/Software Question? |
|
Answer» Had a virus hit windows xp couple years ago and it crashed but I managed to get everything running again. Only problem is that there seems to be 2 of everything now. I cant figure out what I did nor which to delete. QUESTION is, if i add another hard DRIVE and transfer most of my software and information to it, can I wipe the original hard drive, start over, and RETRANSFER all the material. This is really bogging and slowing down everything we do on the computer.Quote from: doc_jh on July 30, 2007, 09:03:28 PM Question is, if i add another hard drive and transfer most of my software and information to it, can I wipe the original hard drive, start over, and retransfer all the material. This is really bogging and slowing down everything we do on the computer. I assume you intend to format and reinstal your OS on the original hard drive so the answer is Yes, but all your programs will also need to be reinstalled not just copied. |
