Solve : Hard drive connection?

Answer»

Greetings:

Replaced my xp sata hard drive with a much larger sata drive. The original drive still contains the old OS and data, and I WOULD like to add it as a “slave” Since bios options seem to be only enable/disable, will the machine be confused as to which OS to LOAD, and if so how would I approach this. I would like to keep the old data intact.

Thanks, RonCheck your MBoard to make sure the new one is on the SATA1 Header plug. The older one should be on SATA2.
At this time don't make any changes to the BIOS.
If you recieved a CD with the new drive put it in and re-boot...if not DLoad the utilities from the new drive manuf. site (Free) and USE them to create a bootable CD.

After booting to the CD choose the "clone" option. Then simply follow the instructions to clone the old drive to the new one. Let it run to completion without interruptions.

Then remove the CD and power down.
Temporarily disconnect the old drive connector.
Re-boot and it should boot to the new HDD with all your Programs, OS and Data intact...run things like this for a day or so to make sure all programs etc. are working.
You can then re-connect the old drive and use the Disk Management tool in Windows and format it and use it for storage.

Any questions feel free to ask....Thanks for the reply.... The new drive has been up and RUNNING 'couple of weeks.... I have not reformatted the old drive as I want to keep the existing FILES on that drive.

Solve : Please help, PC won't load windows!!!?

Answer»

Hey everyone, I am running win XP sp2. when I try to BOOT, I get a popup message after the XP load screen with the moving bar that says

Services.exe - Unable to locate componet
This application has failed to start because MSVCP60.dll was not found
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

It then gives me the option to push "OK" but then nothing happens, the screen just stays black with the mouse pointer which is still able to move but nothing else happens. This happens even when trying to load into safe mode. The good newsis that on another pc I did a google search and found a website that I was able to download the missing .dll file from, and I can burn it to a DISC, but with windows not boting on my pc I do not have a CLUE hoe to install the .dll file in it's proper location.

Any help would be great.

~Anthony Try booting from the XP cd (if you have one). That should give you a repair option.

If you don't have a CD go here:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

And DL a bootdisk that you can use.

When booting select that you want to boot with CD ROM support.
Once booted from the bootdisk, you'll see the DOS prompt (A:\)

And now you can copy that DLL from the CD to the correct directory, the system32 folder under Windows

Once you copied it, remove the bootdisk and restart the pc.

Solve : No modem after SP2 install?

Answer»

I realise am about 2 years behind the times here, but I tried to install SP2 back then, and had the same problem. If I install sp2, the system will not detect the modem. If I try to install it manually, I get something like "the modem can't start code 10." When I first got the xp2 CD, I tried installing it fresh, wiping the HD, installing the original XP sp1 cd, then the SP2. It ALWAYS does the same thing. I even tried a different modem. Both modems work fine under sp1. The one I am trying to use is a Stratitec IC56A, which is an Agere win modem. I know there's nothing wrong with the modem, and I have the latest DRIVER for it, so it has to be caused by SP2. I haven't been able to download windows updates in ages, and its getting really bad. I have a virus I can't get rid of. I want to do a clean install, to get rid of the virus, but that still leaves me with the problem of not being able to update windows because I don't have SP2 installed. I am pulling out whats left of my hair, PLEASE help.I found this. I hope it helps you.

Solve : unable to connect wireless?

Answer»

My wife`s computer was working perfectly on our wireless network. then just stopped connecting. I have loaded INTEL's own connection program so as to be able to try something other than windows zero config. The computer is an HP laptop running XP pro. all other laptops and the main PC can connect with bt home hub no problems, (4 computers have been tried). She is also able to connect with her works system. When I checked on the Intel program and run tests it stops at no association. I can see that it has detected the router as her computer it shows name and mac address of router. Is it possible that her computer is not sending information back to router. I tried setting router to only allow UNITS using their mac addresses and it scanned but failed to find it. Anyone KNOW possible reason why?? Also loaded latest drivers for wireless card. Are you using encryption on the wireless router? If so, TURN it off and turn off the mac filter. Not a solution, but a test to narrow down the problem.Quote

Intel's own connection program
What is that?

You mentioned a hub and a router. Exactly what hardware devices does your home network consist of? What make and model is your router and/or hub?

Exactly how many of the computers you have there, besides the laptop in question, connect wirelessly?

Hi
Yes I have tried disabling encryption, leaving the network unprotected and set it to allow any device to connect. The wireless system is a BT home hub wireless router. All other laptops that we have tried connect OK once the network key is typed in. Also the main PC is able to connect both wired and wireless . In all 5 different computers are able to connect without problem. As STATED before this one was also perfectly OK up to a week or two ago. For some reason the hub/router dose not seem to be able to see the existence of this particular laptop now. Yet the laptop can see the hub/router as it lists its MAC address, its signal strength and channel number. We are not trying to connect any other computers at the same time so its not overloaded Maybe I blinked, but is the make and model "BT"? or "home"? or "hub"?Now resolved

I had to return the BT homehub to its factory default settings and let it find all the computers again. God knows what happened. just a glitch that will remain one of life's mysteries

Solve : Problem of uncertain nature?

Answer»

Hi, I do not know the nature of my problem so it was somewhat difficult to choose the correct forum.

I'm having a serious problem with my laptop graphics, and was hoping that someone was able to provide me with some help/answers.

Whenever my laptop is supposed to show 3D graphics it will display a CHAOS of flickering polygons instead. This applies to everything from flash games, heavy games, and even my standard 3D-text windows screensaver.

Here is a picture of a simple web-browser flash game:
http://i8.tinypic.com/6pr1obk.jpg

Now, I know the issue is related to my Direct3D. When I turn down my hardware accelaeration far enough that Direct3D is disabled, the problem goes away:
http://i4.tinypic.com/6tutyis.jpg

Also, when I run "dxdiag", there is a feature for testing Direct3D. This test is testing with 7, 8 and 9 interfaces. Now, I don't know what this means, but the "test cube" is displaying fine for 7 interfaces, while it is totally messed up for 8 and 9 interfaces:
http://i18.tinypic.com/6ueas95.jpg

I have tried reinstalling drivers, and even reformating my system, with no improvement. So, I fear this is a hardware problem. I first noticed it when playing a game, and it got gradually worse, to the point og hopelessness. However I think it is odd if I BURNED some chip out and this is the only problem I experience.

Can anyone please tell me if they have any opinion on this problem. I'm out of ideas.

Custom ordered (in its time)

I'm not real up on laptop hardware, but I guess you checked to see if there isn't some firmware update available? My knowledge is a bit lacking, sorry. By firmware, do you mean something other than the newest drivers? If, so then I have not updated this. Would this be on the ATI homepage, or somewhere else?

However, I find it strange that something like outdated software would suddenly cause these devestating problems with games that have been working for years. Nothing new was installed when the problem began.Quote from: Computer CPR on December 10, 2007, 12:40:48 PM

What firmware might you be talking about, Computer CPR? I don't think any firmware update is relevant here. Driver update, maybe, but not firmware.1. Operating System. You didn't say what operating system you're using. Windows XP (Home EDITION or Professional)? Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), SP2? Or something else entirely?

2. You also didn't say what version of Direct X you have installed. When you run "dxdiag", I believe it displays on the "System" tab towards the bottom. Should say something like DirectX 7, DirectX 8, or DirectX 9.0c. The version should have a number and probably a letter, perhaps "9.0c"Yes, that was a needless mistake.

Calm down...this isn't neccessary.
Soybeans response was valid.Please, guys.
Could we keep the thread on topic. I am thankful for all inputs, but would really appreciate if the posts could be about the problem.

EDIT: *Sorry, just saw the moderator sign. I guess thats excatly what you were saying*It sounds to me like a failing graphics card or an overheating problem. As you have already reformatted, it's impossible for the issue to be driver or software related, or indeed anything but hardware.
I suggest you get some compressed air, stand the laptop up, use a COTTON bud or similar to hold the fan still, then blow out all the vents you can.
This should remove any dust that has built up.
Let us know how it goes. Thanks, I will try that, and report back on the results.

I used a universal boot disc on a computer with XP.

You should either:
1. Boot from your XP cd and format using that. or
2. Download Delpart and COPY it to your boot disc to delete any NTFS partitions. Then you should be able to repartition and reformat.

The utility programs on the hdd manufacturers site will allow you to do just about anything with your hdd.

Good luckExactly what type of universal bootdisk was this ? ?

but the cd i have doesnt have the option to repair

Are you certain of this. Does the following not work with your cd?

1. Boot from the cd. Displayed MESSAGE "Press any key to boot from cd" _ press any key.

2. Setup will now LOAD install files.

3. Displayed message:
Welcome to Setup
To setup Windows XP now press Enter
To repair Windows XP using Recovery Console.....
To Quit Setup.....

Press Enter to setup Windows.

4. Press F8 to accept the EULA.

5. Displayed message when the Windows XP version already installed is highlighted:
To repair XP Installation press R
To continue installing fresh copy.....

Press R.

If the above still doesn't work with your version of the cd can you borrow a full install version of the XP cd and try that?

Good luck
I suspect, he has Recovery CD. I may be wrong, though.

Solve : windows xp freezed during loading?

Answer»

Hi, im just new and i need HELP.

my problem is that my computer is freezing and ive checked the num lock it doesnt turn on/off, but sometimes it continues to load until desktop but the icons and taskbar doesnt show up. i TRIED to use the ctrl+alt+del to end the explorer.exe and restart a new one but doesnt work..

any help or advise would be much appreciated Have you reinstalled windows?

or you can repair if you got important INFO on your machineDid you try Safe Mode?yeah i have tried the safe mode and i got in but sometimes it also freezes and doesnt continue at all..

i was also trying to reinstall it but the problem now is that sometimes the cdrom cannot be detected, at first it was very smooth when i was reinstalling then suddenly the cdrom cant read the cd that is inside..i dont know whats wrong,my cdrom is working properly when i tried to use it in other pc..
some says that it could be a memory.what do you think guys?Yeah, could be the memory, or worse yet, the motherboard. You mentioned having problems with the CD drive not being found. Is it on the same IDE cable as the hard drive or on the secondary IDE?

Some things you could try:

1) Change the CD drive's IDE cable (if seperate from your HDD)

2) Add the CD drive as the HDD slave on the same cable on the primary IDE

3) Double CHECK the primary and secondary IDE pins and cable connections on both the drive and motherboard

4) See if there's another machine you can use that's compatible with your memory. Swap memory. (Probably better to put the other system's memory into yours. If yours is bad, we don't wanna damage the other system by putting your memory into it).

5) As a last resort, you might need to change the motherboard. If the BOARD is going bad, it can produce problems like you're describing (losing IDE connections, freezing during boot, etc.). It's a little expensive, so after you're sure it could be nothing else, check into getting another board.ive already tried changing the IDE cable..

ill gonna check again on it thanks for the info quaxo

Solve : Windows unable to load?

Answer»

first time poster, hopefully ill get some help rather then spend 100$$ repairing it.

Ill start from the beginning, my computer was running very very slow so i pushed the restart button and waited. well of course that diagnostic screen came up with the options
Run in Safe Mode
Last known configuration that worked properly
Start windows normally

and a few others....

So i tried every single option, and it goes to windows loading screen then just reboots.. It does not get past the windows loading screen. Ive screwed around with the Shift f10 but i am so computer illiterate i didnt know what to do. Hopefully its nothing crazy serious, help very much appreciated...
thank you

Tristan Welcome to the CH forums.

This sounds very like a hardware fault. It's possible that you are getting a BSOD but cannot see it because you have Auto Restart enabled. This means that when your pc encounters a problem from which it cannot automatically recover it automatically restarts. The on-screen message which could show what the error is cannot then be displayed.

I would start by re-seating the memory stick(s) and if that doesn't work then I'd download Memtest86 from Memtest.com and let it run for a while.

Meantime some info on your system would be handy, like what's your OS, ram, how many hard drives, what anti-virus and firewall you use and anything else. The more info you give the better diagnosis you'll receive.

Thank you for reply Dusty

I would love to download those programs or even tell you my setup, but my computer will not let me do anything accept try to run windows.. As i said it constantly reboots into that screen... I tried to PUSH shift f10 and it takes me to a blue screen with a few options on how to start again, but as i said..Comp illiterate. ...

When i do get to the very first load screen it sits there with a few options

Flash Recovery
f10 is like another diagnostic thing.

There a few other others but when i push them the computer just sits there..

I pushed Y (yes) for flash recovery and a makes a noise for a while but continues to sit there all the while it says 'running flash recovery"... how long does it take?!Very interesting, much like going to the doctor and not being able to tell him what nationality you are.

But OKAY. You surely can tell:
1. Is your pc a laptop, notebook, or a desktop?
2. Is your pc manufacturer's name/model number displayed anywhere?
3. Does your hardware include a cd/dvd and/or a floppy disk drive?
4. When you could boot up did your screen show Windows XP or some other operating system?
5. Can you boot into Safe Mode by TAPPING F8 during the boot sequence?
6. Does your hdd contain files which you need to recover or is your backup up-to-date?

Memtest86 does NOT involve booting to your operating system, Memtest can be downloaded on any other machine which is working and connected to the internet, and then you produce either a floppy disk or a cd from which to boot.

Meantime I suggest you do NOT attempt any recovery procedure unless you understand what's happening or have advice on what to attempt. Pushing random keys because it sounds good can cause catastrophic results

Without any information I am loath to advise you further.

Solve : I need help with win 3.11 for workgroups?

Answer»

I just got it and all the files are TOGETHER and not categorized by disks.
Does anybody have the file list or know where I can get one that is already done like that? Are you trying to Install this verison, if yes there will be a setup.exe file just RUN that file from dos prompt, it will guide you to installation.

There will be a utility bundled with win 3.11 for making floppy set, it makes 10 floppy sets. Sounds like an unpacked .RAR file here...
Is this the case ? ?They don't need to be classified by disk. Just put all the files in one directory, start up DOS, and change to the directory your Win3.11 files are saved in. Then type Setup, choose your settings, and it'll install very quickly WITHOUT even needing to change disks. MUCH less work than waiting for the floppies to finish installing.

Just did it myself a few days ago with no problems . Only CAVEAT is that if there's a 512 file limit in non-root directories, WFW might go a bit over - Win 3.11 non-Workgroups was 462 (417 without optional drivers).

Solve : music playing at wrong speed?

Answer»

Can anybody please tell me why my music appears to play too fast thus creating high pitched voices. System xp,sp2 2.6ghz cpu, 512 mb ramWhat are you using to play it? Windows Media Player? WinAmp? Something else?windows media player and acoustica
Not sure about Acoustica but Windows Media Player has a play speed option in it somewhere.
I think it's in the Play tab.
Right click on the "play " tab and chose the ONE you want. Thanks for your help,I think the play tab is the answer. Thanks againSorry! wrong again, the playing speed in media player was set at normal and the voices are still sounding a bit falsetto. The tempo does not seem bad,but maybe that is not as noticeable as the vocals. So ESSENTIALLY we are back where we started. This is a friends pc so I am a little delayed in seeing the results of any actions you may recommend. Thanks again.See what happens with Winamp. What type of music files are these ? ?
Factory ?
DLoads ?
Copies of another CD ?

Your issue may LIE in how they were burned/copied....they were downloaded and just played. But even his older downloaded material sound the same.I have told him to download winamp and we'll go from there. Thanks. Some soundcards come with software that allows the users to change pitch and add echo effects and such. Is there any sound managers or anything like that running in the notification area? (Next to the clock on the windows TASKBAR.)I dont know but I will check that out next TIME I see him. That i something that his grand children may have played with. Thanks.

Solve : a doubt?

Answer»

I have a doubt.
When I opened user accounts in control PANEL through safe mode, there were two administrator accounts.
One was my own account and another was the name of my computer.
How is it possible that there are two administrators on the same computer? Its done by your computer manufacture.

One is a local system administrator that is made to do system level operations and the other is the administrative user on the computer, USUAL you who do day to day administrative tasks.
There is only one administrator account, usually called Administrator. This account is by default HIDDEN in normal mode, but shows up in safe mode. The reason is that it isn't supposed to be USED for day to day tasks, but only for emergencies.
You can on the other hand have MANY user accounts with admin privileges. These can do almost the same tasks as the real Administrator.

Solve : Windows XP Clock Slow?

Answer»

Hello All!

I NEED some help please. The Windows Time Clock on my MACHINE is running slow. I have checked for spyware and such, but the system seems clean. I've also check the BIOS time and it is perfectly on time. Any time I reboot my computer the time on Windows time seems to be fine.. but as the minutes start to roll by the clock starts to run late. I also have set the Internet Clock updating with various servers which work fine but after a couple of minutes the delay begins.

In short this seems to be a software issues because if it were the CMOS battery the BIOS clock wouldn't be continually on time.

Any ideas

ThanksHave you tried synching to a different time server?Quote

I also have set the Internet Clock updating with various servers
This was suggested to me by a tech colleague. He said there have been problems with the Windows clock SINCE Windows 95.

1. Start->Run cmd.exe
2. net stop w32time
3. W32TM /unregister (if you see an error message, type it again)
4. w32tm /register
5. net start w32timeNow that I've tried all that I'll check if it's working properly... I also changed the CMOS battery... I wonder if it has anything to do with my RAM.. 512?

Solve : Network card is missing Dont know what to download!?!?!?

Answer»

i recently reinstalled windows onto my laptop and now my internet will not work(not wireless) I called my isp and they told me i needed to download a network card or something because mine is missing but i have no idea how/what to download

any help greatly appretiatedWhat windows version did you installed? I believe they meant you need to download a new driver for your network card. I always download all update drivers for my current computer and burn them into cd. When I do a clean install or something happen to my computer then I just reinstall those drivers back rather than keep search the WEB for new drivers. You can get drivers from the FOLLOWING links but I think you have to pay to download a driver. Try to download from your network card's web site and download from there. It's FREE from them.

http://www.driverguide.com/

http://www.driverzone.com/

Good luck. Wish you a happy holiday SEASON. If you go the laptop manufacturer's website you call probably drill down to a driver download section, and then find your particular model. I'd be willing to bet the drivers for the NIC aren't the only one's missing.Your laptop brand, and model? Windows version?emachine m5309 windows xp pro i called emachine and they TRIED to f*ckin charge me $40 to TRY to help me my ISP told me i needed to install my network card with the cd which i do not have and by the way in my network connections all there is is 1394 connection if that helps

thanksHere is the support page for your laptop.
Click the + symbol next to "Downloads".
You can download either the original driver called "BCM 3.70.17" or if you don't mind a larger download, an updated driver called "Broadcom Network Driver".
After you've downloaded the file, run it on your laptop.Deerpark nailed it on the head follow his INSTRUCTIONS and it should be working ok.

P.S. If your ISP ever tells you to install the cd they sent you DONT. Usally those CD's are just a browsere provided by you ISP which may have some benifits but are usally useless and are more labor intensive on your cpu.

Have a great holidays!!!!

Solve : Can't Boot?

Answer»

Ok, i will start at the begging. The night prior to this problem, there was nothing wrong with computer, everything was operating NORMALLY. I shut down the computer for the night and went to bed. The next MORNING, i hit the power button its starts to boot like normal, then goes to the screen with prompts to "start windows normally", "start with last known good configuration", or "start in safe mode" with various OPTIONS. No matter which option i choose windows starts to load then the computer restarts. It then shows me a blue screen with hp and Intel with prompts to go to; "boot menu", "setup", and "system recovery". I have tried the system recovery and i hear the 2 beeps but it doesn't help the boot problem. I have tried restoring my BIOS settings to their defaults, but nothing. It just repeats restarting and cycling through those screens.

The most recent software i added would have been about a month ago and the computer behaved normally up to this morning.

Here's my specs:
RAM: 512mb, Hard drive: 250gb, OS: Windows XP

any help would be much appreciated, thank you.I would say you've had a hardware failure. It's difficult to say what though. The way to find out is to test each piece of hardware individually - do you have a second PC with which you can do some testing?I can probably get ahold of one for testing. but what would be the best way to go about testing each piece and what all should i test?

thanks for the helpI would say its your hard drive. The HD is like the brain of the computer. If the brain doesnt work right, then the body doesn't (see what I MEAN?) Your best bet is to clear the hard drive and reinstall everything. Most likely some important system file has bee deleated and you need to get it back. If you can try to save all of your important documents on a flash drive, but it sounds like you can't...This will make your life real easy.
Downlead the UBCD (Ultamate Boot CD).
It is an ISO file so bur it to a disk on another computer and boot to it. run all the cheks that are on the disk that wiull check all your hardware.

There is also a possiblility that your boot record became corupt.

Do you have a HP? (I think you said you did), also how old, and what disks if any came with it do you have. i.e.- re-install CD, or full XP CD.

Solve : back up disc?

Answer»

Hello all

Can someone advice me on how to do a back up of my computer just incase SOMETHING goes wrong. Being a novice all help appreciated.

Thank you
Merry Christmas

CazzieHello Cazzie.

The type of backup necessary is a subject on which no two experts would agree except that backup is absolutely necessary.

Some users prefer to simply burn their data files to cd\dvd for backup which means that, in the EVENT of a catastrophic hard disk failure, the Operating System and user PROGRAMS must be re-installed on a NEW hard disk before recovering the user files from cd/dvd.

Other users prefer to backup entire hard disks by ghosting (cloning) them to various media (my preference is to a dedicated hard drive) so that if necessary the backup disk can simply be installed and in most cases booted from.

How and what you backup depends on how critical your program/data files are to your everyday operation, what facilities are available to you and how much you want to INVEST in backup. If it's just a simple matter of backing up music/photographs/e-mail folders then you might only need to invest in one cd/dvd at a cost of say $1.50, and burn your files to it, then rely on being able to reinstall the Operating System and user programs from existing media. If you want to backup the tax records for your company spanning the last 10 years your backup system might have to become a bit more sophisticated.

Whichever backup system you opt for ensure that you test the backup files. There's nothing worse than needing to access backup files only to find that they cannot be read for some obscure reason.

Only you can decide what and how and how often you will backup. The software necessary to backup data is free for download so no super-sophisticated program costing zillions of dollars is needed. If you want to backup your entire hard disk I recommend ghosting (cloning) to another hard disk be it fitted internally or in an external enclosure. You may not want to invest the cost of a dedicated hard drive.

Good luck

Solve : Disk Cleanup Freezes?

Answer»

When I tried to run the Disk Cleanup, it keeps freezing at the early STAGE "Compress Old Files", and the CPU fan become so loud that I can hear it from downstairs.
I've ran Disk Defragmenter, no different.
I run it in Safe Mode, no different.
What could be wrong?
Thanks.Actually it's probably not freezing...the compression stage takes the longest ESPECIALLY if it hasn't been run for awhile and it is a large HDD...
Run it while you're sleeping. It's worth doing if you want to get any mileage out of that drive...I haven't run it for ages, so I expected it to take a while, but not this LONG.

My C: is about 56GB on a 120GB disk.
As you suggested, I was actually running it overnight, and EVEN when I went to work.
But it still didn't progress after 12 hours. Doesn't that seem a little too long?

Solve : add/remove program problem???

Answer»

I am hopeful that I can explain this clearly enough. First of all I am running Windows XP Home.

I WENT into my add/remove programs recently and noticed that there is huge gap between programs when I scroll down. I can scroll down as far as "dell support" and then there is the gap before the program LIST continues. This gap consists of black space and black bars. Is this something I should be CONCERNED about?? Has anybody else experienced this?

THANKS,

Jim What protection software are you using?
Do you have FileChecker installed on your computer by any chance?
Do you think you can post a SCREENSHOT for us to look at?Try this...

1. Open a CMD.EXE prompt. (or in the run line)
2. Type regsvr32 mshtml.dll and press Enter and OK.
3. Type regsvr32 shdocvw.dll -i and press Enter and OK.
4. Type regsvr32 shell32.dll -i and press Enter and OK.
5. Close the CMD window.

Solve : Windows Freezes at setup 34min mark!?

Answer»

Just solved one issue, onto ANOTHER. Newly build PC, first boot, and trying to load Win98 before using my upgrade to XP.

Two problems:

1) new Asus DRW-2014L1T wont initialize when I try to insert the windows disk to load the OS. BIOS setup I can see the drive, but wont initialize with the driver on the Mobo...

My quickfix: plugged in my old CDROM

Any Ideas on this?

2) Windows setup is freezing continuously at 34min remaining. Exactly at 61% of checking diskspace.

I know that the HD is not corrupt, bc windows already formatted a drive C:

ANYONE WITH THE WISDOM TO HELP THIS POOR PC?Just because the Windows setup is able to format the drive doesn't mean the drive can't be defective. Your standard formatting is far from a thorough PROCESS.
I suggest you run the diagnostics tool from the hard drive manufacturer to be sure. There should be one available on their website. If you can't find it, post the brand name of the hard drive and I'll point you to the right tool.I have Western Digital HD. I have to put the HD into another comp to run the ultility right?

Is there anything ELSE you think I try ?Quote from: utravis on December 22, 2007, 05:51:03 PM

It's not a bad idea to do that, but you don't have to. The tool comes as either a BOOTABLE floppy or CD.

WD's diagnostics tool is called Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and here you can get either the CD or floppy version.
Remember to read the intructions on how to create the bootable floppy/CD.

Solve : remove clutter in add remove program applet?

Answer»

running win xp pro sp2 on dell system. when i open add remove program applet, it takes a long time to populate the screen because there is a ton of CLUTTER in there because of all the windows updates. can i remove/delete any of them? if so, can is there any way to determine which ones i can remove. or is my only option to uncheck show all updates? Thanks. There are a few things you could do...

1. Instead of using Add/Remove Programs, DOWNLOAD CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar) and USE its Tools feature instead. It doesn't solve your problem, but this is an incredibly useful program and it's much faster.

2. Use the Delete Entry feature in CCleaner to remove those updates from your uninstall list. The programs will still exist, but when you open Add/Remove Programs, they won't show up anymore.

3. Open up My COMPUTER and go to Tools > Folder Options. Show hidden files/folders as well as system files/folders. Go to C:\WINDOWS and delete all of the $NtUninstallKB******$ folders. You can then choose to uninstall them with Add/Remove Programs. Because the files are missing, the entries will be removed from the list. NOTE: If you do this, you won't be able to uninstall any of your hotfixes and security updates in necessary. Because of this, I would suggest that you first backup all of these folders onto a CD, just in case you ever need to uninstall of the updates.

4. Simply uncheck Show All Updates like you mentioned. I gave you different alternatives because you asked for them, but I really see no reason to not go with this option.

Hi

I hope someone outthere can help, i have a pc which is running windows XP service pack 2 3.2 meg it has 1gig ram and 360 gig hard drive i recently had to do a full restore and since then every so ofter my windows freeze up and some tiimes i have to do a hard reboot, could some one have had the same problem and help me out.

Thanks in advance

IainIt could be a graphics card issue. Have you installed the latest drivers?
Does this problem still occur in Safe Mode?
Use a program such as PC Wizard to check your temperatures. What are they?
Does this problem happen more during any certain activities, or does it APPEAR to be completely random?
Do you get any error messages?
What exactly do you mean by "full restore"? Did you use System Restore? Or did you reformat the computer?

All of this info and anything else you can think of would be very helpful.Hi CBMatt

Thanks for replying and listed below are the answers to your questions

Yes i have the latest drivers for my graphics card
no it doesn't happen in safe mode
downloaded pcwizard Processer temp is 60.5 c Mainboard temp is 47 C ACPI Thermal temp is 60 c
The problem doesn't happen more during certain activites it sometimes happens when i am doing only one thing
no reformatted the pc

Thanks again for anyhelp you can give me

Cheers

Sorry forot to mention one other thing it sometimes flashers a dialog box up regarding the Dr watson debugger when it closes things down i don't know if this is relevant. Is this computer a custom build by any chance?

Those temperatures seem a bit high to me. On average, my CPU temperature is 30C (36C if I push it) and my motherboard temperature doesn't usually go over 25C (it's 18C right now). Your temperatures are about double what I would consider normal.

High temperatures can sometimes cause a computer to freeze and crash, which is certainly a possibility in your case. At the very least, you should open up your computer and clean it out as thoroughly as possible with a can of compressed air (and nothing else!). Possibly even apply a bit of thermal compound to help regulate the heat of your CPU somewhat. Leave your computer's side panel open for awhile and let it run...see if there's a difference in performance at all. Also, you should use PC Wizard to take a look at your fan speeds. There's a chance your fans aren't running at optimal capacity or perhaps you simply don't have enough airflow coming in (another reason why you need to clean out the computer with compressed air). EITHER way, there's a chance you might need a new/extra fan. But we'll WAIT before drawing that conclusion.

Because your problem doesn't occur in Safe Mode, it might be taking some of the stress off of your hardware by not having so many different things running. It could also mean you have a software issue. If cleaning out your computer and giving it some air doesn't help, then we might want to take a look at things from this perspective.

What protection (anti-virus, firewall, etc.) do you have installed on your computer?

Dr. Watson conflicts with certain anti-virus software and will sometimes create freezes and crashes. The severity level is usually a bit lower, but this is still a possibility. If you have no need for Dr. Watson, you might want to uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs. If you would prefer to simply disable it, refer to this page...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188296

If that doesn't help, there's always the possibility of an infection. You might want to download HijackThis and post the log here. The only versions I work with are 1.99.1 and 2.0.2, so download one of those. Once you have scanned with it, you can either copy and paste the log (this will take one or two posts) or you can save the file as a .txt and upload it as an attachment. By default, logs are saved in .log format, which currently isn't supported by our forum (I'm hoping to CHANGE this).

Go ahead and try out all of the above and post back with your results for everything. If you can't do one of these tasks, please let me know. And if you have any questions, feel free to ask.Hi

thanks for getting back to me will take side panel off this evening noticed one thing though very DUSTY at the back of pc so will invest in a can of compressed air and hopefully that will do the trick will try other things and get back to you with results

Cheers

Solve : Computer restarting/freezes?

Answer»

Hey this is my second post and im still a little lost.

My computer keeps RESTARTING every 3-5 minutes whenever there is a squealing sound coming for my computer. So, i checked out this other site and what it said was that when there is an error on m PC, it will restart. the site said that i should right-click on MY COMPUTER and click on the advanced tab, and on the STARTUP AND RECOVERY tab, settings. and i should uncheck ATOMATICALLY RESTART. i did that but it still keeps restarting everytime. what should i do?

bfIs this a sound coming from the hardware or a sound coming through the speakers or something?

If it's coming from the hardware, try to determine what's making the sound.the sound is coming from the hardware, but i can find where its coming from. its only making the sound for a short while

bfIf something hardware is making noises like you're describing, something is most likely dying. It's important you figure out what it is exactly ASAP.hey im not sure but i think the sound is coming from the power supply fan, but im not sure , or it something from the back of the pc box thing.

bfive read that everytime an error occurs, it is written in the system/event log. does anyone know where to find this?

bfOk, it sounds like your power supply is failing.

The following link explains system logs and where to view them:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427

However, a PSU failing won't necessarily register in the logs. The Event Viewer and the logs are mostly for Windows, drivers, and other things of the sort.hey thanks for your help ANYWAY

Solve : computer won't install xp?

Answer»

Ok, I'm lost! I think I have tried every THING! I am trying to install xp on a p4 Intel 1.8 MHz with 256 ddr ram. The computer had xp it on it before It was given to me and I wanted to clean and reinstall from scratch but I can't get the windows files to copy. I get "file ____ was not copied CORRECTLY" or "setup cannot copy the file" I have tried 3 different drives, swapped ram, formatted numerous time, checked jumpers and CABLES, and have tried 2 different original full xp disks.
When I put the disk in it asks to PRESS any key, setup loading files, delete partition, set partition, and then problems start. I am stumped! I have to skip files to continue but get the "windows has detected a problem "screen. It stops at different files each time.

I have tried 3 different drives,
Are you talking about cd/dvd drives or hard drives? The three most common causes of failed XP installs are:
Bad RAM
Dirty or scratched CD
HDD errors.

Solve : restart shortly after booting?

Answer»

Toshiba A70 Laptop- XP Home OS-Bought at auction-80 gig HD only 30% left unused-Boots ok then either freezes(CURSER STOPS and have to turn off), or re-starts after about 3 minutes. Ran a repair utility-did not help-lol $50 piece of junk
Want to REMOVE some of the useless programs? Won't stay on long enough to do that.hey i dont know if its the same problem but my computer also does that. check my previous topics.

bfDo you have a Windows XP disk?
I think your best bet is to reformat it - I would do this with any used computer to remove the owner's files and start afresh.well i don't have disc since lap top was bought at auction. Im sure I could get one from a friend. Would I just format the "C" drive? Can I just insert the disc and have it format? What is the command to type in?If you get a disk, make sure it is legally licensed, otherwise you will just cause more problems.
Basically, you can put the disk in, reboot, and then the laptop will boot from the disk (if it doesn't, enter the BIOS and change the boot order so that the CDROM drive is before the HDD).
Then, just follow the on screen instructions, delete all partitions on the disk, and then format as you want.Friend is unsure whether copy of disk is legal. Does anyone know if there's no other way to fix problem? NEW disk is a couple of hundred?

Solve : Old Computer + Low Disk Space?

Answer» HELLO,

I have an old computer running WINDOWS ME. Right now, it only has 800MB of FREE disk space left, and the hard drive capacity is 18GB.Is there a way I get some more disk space back? There is no internet connection on this computer, and my computer's CD-ROM drive is stuck open (Can't be bothered fixing it).

I assume the video files on the computer are the files hogging the disk space but I can't delete them until I put them on a CD (the video files are very valuable).

I removed all software that I don't need. I just need to get a one or two gigabytes back without deleting those video files.

Thank you.

[edit]

Moderators: Place this in the right board if required.Slave drive, thumb drive, spare cd writer

What ya expect us to do then

You want to burn your video files to a CD on a broken CD burner?

Here's a thought: Fix the drive, or get a new one.A. Fix the drive, they're only a few bucks now anyways.
B. Get a USB flash drive. I've seen them in the 8 gig range now.
C. Have a friend with a laptop come over, network the two, use the burner on his laptop.
D. Use a better type of compression on the files, lower the bitrate, lower the resolution, etc.Quote from: Anodoin on December 12, 2007, 08:24:48 PM

I've seen em in the 16G range already.

But Anodoin is right, the options he gave are the only (simple) ones you got.Since I feel I must say it:
Most Windows ME computers didnt have a CD-burner, unless added on later, or as an extra upgrade. If you plan on fixing the drive, make sure it can burn information. (Look at the tray of the drive, what does it say on the front of it? CD-ROM? CD-R/W? CD-R? DVD-R?)
DUAL - layer DVD burners are starting at 30 bucks @ newegg......Shipped.

There's simply no reason not to have one these days.

Solve : New computer out of memory already??

Answer»

My laptop is 5 MONTHS old and came with 106 GB of memory. Currently there is 9.69GB free and I don't think this should be the case. My installed programs is under 3GB, My music, documents, and pictures is roughly 30GB. I've tried deframenting and disk cleanup, only to open up another gig or 2.

I think I've tracked down a large (30 gb) chunk of memory in Hard Drive>Program Files>Lenovo>System Update>logs>tvsu_log_0710201100007. (I'm assuming this is SORT of important) I'm only partially satisfied. Where did the rest of my open memory go? Any advice or ideas is greatly appreciated.Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new SOFTWARE?

Alan <>< You're confusing memory with hard drive free space....they're 2 different things.
The Lenovo files are the backups of your laptop drivers and OS...DO NOT delete them.
I would consider getting a burner if you don't have one and burning your music files to CD/DVD...

As Alan stated ....more info.

Solve : Help - No boot sector on internal hard drive?

Answer»

Hey! I have a DELL with WINDOWS XP. My computer has been very slow lately until yesterday when she "died". I'm not computer literate so please be PATIENT!! It started with the regular DELL screen and immediately I get this message: "No boot sector on internal drive - No bootable devices strike F1 to retry, F2 to setup utility". I tried F1and it gave me the same message again. I tried F2 and I get the System screen and I have no idea what to do once I get to the System screen. Thanks!!If your computer was running slow before this happened...it could be malware related.

If you're getting an error message that there is no boot sector on the internal drive, then being able to boot into Windows may be a problem...since there is no boot sector.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? Reboot your computer and before it gets to the Windows boot screen...continually press the F8 key on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode menu. Once there, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key on your keyboard. Let us know if you were able to do this, successfully.

If not, then there's a pretty good chance the Windows installation is corrupt and needs to be repaired...and/or the hard drive needs to be re-partitioned, formatted and the operating system needs to be re-installed.

Please note: Before you do the above...you need to be aware that re-partitioning and reformatting your hard drive will result in the loss of all data on that drive. You will NOT be able to recover any data once you do this.

Also, do you have the system recovery CDs that CAME with this Dell computer?

Please keep us posted.I tried the F8 and gave me the same message, BUT I tried the power with the FN at the same time and I got a Diagnostic boot selected message and it started to run the Pre-Boot System Assessment Buil 3017. It passed many tests like the color, video card connection, etc but when it got to the DST Short Status Test I got the following message:" No diagnostic Utility Partition Found. To run diagnostics, insert your DELL "Drivers and Utilities" CD, then select ok to restart the system and boot off the CD". Well I dont have the CD so I went to Dell and downloaded the "Diagnostic Utility", and I got the original message again.WARNING:

If you use either of the Dell CD's to correct this situation you will lose ALL your data and the machine will be back to Day One status when you first bought it...

If this is not what you want yet you will need to remove the drive from your machine and hook it up as a slave drive in another desktop machine preferably with a burner so you can copy/burn your important data to CD/DVD...

Anyone with any PC building experience will be able to do this for you.

I'd suggest also before trying to rebuild the Dell that you DLoad and run the diagnostics (FREE ) from the HDD manuf site to make sure the drive has not failed completely...

Solve : Mouse Highlighting more than one thing!?

Answer»

I know this sounds dumb, but I don't know what the problem is. When I am in my Outlook 2003 and I try to click on an email and then I click on another, it highlights both instead of just CHOOSING one...Please help!It sounds like either your Shift or Ctrl key MIGHT be stick. There's two of each on the keyboard...try MESSING around with all four keys to see if you can get them unstuck. You may need to CLEAN the keyboard as well. And of COURSE, a simple restart could be all that you need. And if by chance it's cordless well then replace the batteries...It might be that u ve got 'Sticky keys' on mate
