Solve : File Compression?

Answer»

Hello Forum: I have a general question. Why would WindowsXP continue to compress files even though I put in "60" days as the wait time before compressing files. I did this in the 'disk cleanup' utility option. It is my sister's computer and when I ran disk cleanup the first time there were over 400 MB in Temporary Internet Files and 2.2 GB !! in COMPRESSED files. I deleted all . Two minutes LATER I ran disk cleanup again and there were 405 MB in compressed files. And this was after setting options to 60 days. It was set at 50 days before that. Is this a simple fix? What am I missing? She has an older PC with only 225 MB RAM. An AMD Athlon processor 2GB. Windows XP with IE 7 . Comcast broadband ISP. And.... the computer is slow. Even on the Web. Any help would be appreciated. ThanksDisk Cleanup shows the amount of space that would be saved if you were to select the option for it to compress old files.
Hope this helps. Thanks for the feedback Calum. In Disk Cleanup , if I check the 'compressed old files' block and hit OK, Windows will delete all the compressed old files that are in there. Yes?Now if I don't want windows to compress old files any more(or for at least 60 days) there should not be any more files compressed for 60 days, right? That's why I don't understand how 405 MB ended up in 'compressed old files' 5 minutes later. I expected Disk Cleanup to show 0 MB after I told it to delete all the first time I ran it. 405 MB is a lot to compress in 5 min. I thought. I still don't know how she got 2 GB !! in compressed old files from the start. Right now I have 15 days selected before compression in my computer and there are 0 MB in compressed old files. If I am MISUNDERSTANDING this please let me know. Thanks again. When you set the number of days, you are setting the number of days since a file was last accessed.

Example: Number of day set to 60: file created sixty days ago and not accessed since then will be compressed. The next day you run Cleanup other files will have existed and not been accessed for sixty days so they are compressed.

Cleanup does not delete any files in the Compress Old Files category, they are only compressed and if accessed will automatically be expanded.OK Dusty. Understood. Thanks all for the help.

Solve : screen size changes?

Answer»

A QUICK question, I have never had this problem before. When I resize the screensize on my system, it will not stay the same size the next time I pull up a program or website. This is now happening on two systems USING XP PROFESSIONAL. In the past when I used my mouse to resize a screen, it would stay that size from that point on. Any ideas ? Thanks, Vince do you just grab a CORNER and drag? or click the square between the - and the x on the top right hand side?

Solve : Re: Some Useful Advice...?

Answer»

Quote from: bayern on June 30, 2007, 05:35:03 AM

I have only one and only one advice. But it's the best of all advices.

DITCH WINDOWS and all Microsoft's s%^&, use Mac or Linux instead. Never UNDERSTAND why people continue to use Microsoft's craps (from its OSs to IE, they are nothing but junks) and continue to complain about it.
I personally have never had a problem with any of Microsoft's software. I may be a FireFox user, but I mainly use it for the purpose of Spell Check...

Quote
Personally, I have used all Windows OSes and IEs, I couldn't bear the pains and griefs they had caused me. Now I use Mac OSX and Linux, my pains and griefs are gone.
I have used Mac OS 7,8,9,OSX.
I was not IMPRESSED at all with any of them.
I dont like how they advertise (saying they dont crash or get viruses, since that is a complete and direct lie)
I dont think that their OS is any easier to use than Windows.
As for Linux, I do enjoy using Linux, I have less issues with it then the Mac OS.
If my computer crashed, or something happened to my operating system and the operating system disk, and my computer crashed, I would gladly switch to Linux. I use Linux on one of my computers. (But I have to say, there are some parts of Linux that just get me a bit peeved)

Quote
There's no reason for not using Mac OSX or Linux. Especially Linux, it's free and it's good. Plenty of great open source softwares, Gimp, OpenOffice, Firefox... you name it, available a download away, all for free.
If you are a office person, and you need a spreadsheet or a WSYIWYG text editor, then I would greatly follow this suggestion.
I found it depressing how limited a lot of the software is. There are some things that you will find for Windows that you just cant get for Mac or Linux.
Or, sometimes, you find an alternative, but its just not the same.

Quote

For those who continue to use Microsoft's trashes, you ask for it and you deserve no sympathy.

B.

My Macintosh comes to more full and complete crashes than my Windows computer does, since, a lot of the time, when your Macintosh's front application crashes, all the background applications crash as well.

What is it, Apple/Cloverleave CMD INTERRUPT to restart? Sorry about my mistake in unlocking the topic...
I thought it was locked by accident

Anyways, all replies have been moved into this thread to reduce interference with the stickied topic

Once again, sorry for the confusion No worries, Zylstra. I added a link to the original topic in your post. I hope you don't mind.To be honest, there was a time I hated all computers, whether it be Mac or Windows. I never liked Mac OS 7, 8 or 9 or even the early OS X either cuz they were as almost as bad a Windows. But once I started using Mac OS X 10.4, I found a big improvement. My Mac is my web design dev machine, I use it to do graphic design, php coding... It's also an Apache server for my client to see my work, , so it's on 24/7. It rarely crashes on me, even when a bad app crashes, I don't need to reboot. Never needs to deal with BSOD, NTLDR is missing, blah blah blah. And if you ask any web designer, they will tell you how pain in the *censored* IE is.

I am not saying Mac and Linux are perfect, but at least you don't have to worry so much about wasting time on fixing it instead of use the time to do serious work.

I have come to two realizations:
1) Windows is so very appropriate named because you really need to find windows in your office to throw your pc out.
2) It's a very little known secret, but Bill Gate is actually an entomologist cuz he really likes bugs.

Thus why the replys were split out of it into this thread

Since it was agreed that your thread would not be as useful if it had replys (like the ones above)
(If you still want the thread closed, tell us, you have a bit of control over this topic, discussion on PC's and the Macintosh can be ended at any time )
Yes...because the replies are no longer tied to your original post, it can still be helpful to others. However, like Zylstra said, if you want it locked, just let us know and we can oblige. Thanks for the update, guys.

Solve : Computer freezes for no reason...?

Answer»

Okay I'm running Windows XP Home Edition. My problem is that when I'm signing into my dial-up connection, right when everything gets connected, and it is about to show the icon for being connected in the system tray, the computer like freezes. To get out of the freeze I have to click on start, and then click ctrl alt del like 50-200 times for it to unfreeze. It usually only does this when I'm signing into my connection, but rarely it does it some time else.

My computer doesn't have viruses as I have checked...

Any help would be great, thanks!More info, Ram, Cpu, HDD (space), recent events that may have caused this, etc.

Also, to rule out some infection possibility you could post a HiJackThis log and UPLOAD the executable you use for connecting to http://virusscan.jotti.org/ so we can rule out some form of 'dialer' thats stuffing up? I don't know if that will help but it could rule out something...

Solve : Microsoft Word unwanted "helpful" behavior?

Answer»

This may have already been answered, but I can't find it in the forum or FAQs, so here goes.

I know how to turn off auto-correct, auto-format and that sort of THING, but how can I get Microsoft Word to stop CHANGING fonts for no APPARENT reason when I move the cursor to the end of a document? And when copying and pasting, how do I get Word to stop assuming that I don't want the extra space at the end of something. When I select something and include a space, I do that because I want the space to stay there.

Maybe I'm just stupid or something, but I do a LOT of writing and editing for several major clients, and normally do not use Word, but I have one particular client company that *INSISTS* that I use Word, including a certain template that they provide, so I'm stuck. Word is giving me high blood pressure. Sorry to rant.

Gary Rector
Are you using a template?

What version of Office are you using?
(You might have to reset the default template file, I dont know how to do this) Yes, as I mentioned, I'm using a template that the client provides. But I've checked, and it's not the template that is causing these strange behaviors. The version I'm using is 2000, but I have a friend who uses a more recent version and complains of the same annoying behavior. My preferred solution to the problem would be to get the client to let me stop using Word, but I've tried convincing the team manager in charge of the project I'm working on, and he absolutely refuses to budge. In Korea, we use Asian fonts in addition to the usual Windows fonts, so I suppose that could be part of the problem, although I can't stop using Asian fonts, obviously, or I wouldn't be able to type in Korean and Chinese characters.

Solve : Outlook Backup: Personal folder, Calendare and SAVED folder?

Answer»

I have Outlook 2002. I keep a LOT of data in the SAVED folder. The SAVED folder appears to be at the same "level" as my INBOX. I've managed to find the .pst folder by right CLICKING on the INBOX folder, but I'm not SURE that this file contains all of my SAVED information as well. Is there a different extension for the SAVED data? How can I find out what's actually getting saved to the .pst file? I can't get the location of the SAVED file by right clicking, like I can with the INBOX folder....

Additionally, I've tried to do a search for the pab folder (adderess info), but can't seem to locate that.

Please help me! JerolynI also have Outlook 2002 and show no "Saved" folder at all. This must be a folder that someone created.

"How can I find out what's actually getting saved to the .pst file?" You can't just by looking at it.

When you do an export which creates the .pst file, you have many options to save all or particular things. What I would do is export the whole enchilada, then install Outlook on another machine, do an import and see if all is there. It should be.

Alan <>< I believe the ADDRESS book is in a .wab file not a .pab file...but i could be wrong.Alan - thanks for the comment re the "saved" file. I think you're right. I just moved it as a subdirectory under my "inbox" so at least when I save the inbox .pst file, that should be included.

Patio - I've since discovered that the address book is a .pab file, but it's in older VERSIONS of Outlook, not the 2002 that I have.

Thanks to both of you!

Cheers, JerolynYou are most welcome

Solve : Error: We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully?

Answer»

I have an HP Pavilion a815n Desktop PC with Windows XP. So whenever I try to turn it on this error message pops up:

Error: We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

It gives me all of these options of how I want to start the computer (i.e. safe mode, start from the last good configuration, start windows normally) but none of these seems to work as I cant even get to the welcome screen. The computer just keeps automatically restarting. I'm not sure what caused it. Could it be due to a software program I recently downloaded? Cause I just downloaded an Anti-virus trial verson from AVG at grisoft.com. Or could this be cause by an improper computer shutdown by pressing the power button?

So I decided to go to the HP support site to try and find out how to fix the problem and I've tried the following but none of these methods have worked:

Step 1: Removing recently added hardware
Use the steps in this section to disconnect any recently added hardware and test for the error.
NOTE: If a new internal device (sound card, hard drive, or other) was added to the computer before the error message started to occur, you have to remove it before continuing.

Turn off the PC and unplug the power cord.
Disconnect the mouse, and any other peripherals attached (Printer, scanner, webcam, zip drive, phone cord, network cable and other devices). Leave only the keyboard and MONITOR cable attached.
Press and hold the power button on the front of the PC. Release after 10 seconds.
Plug the power cord back in.
Turn on the computer.
The computer displays the We apologize for the inconvenience... message. Allow the timer to count down from 30 to 0.
If the computer successfully starts to the Windows desktop and does not restart to the error message, connect ONE device and wait until Windows recognizes it.
To find if a device is causing the error, continue connecting the devices, one at a time, restarting the computer each time, until the device that is causing the error is found.
NOTE: Be sure to wait until Windows completely starts before reconnecting devices. Check with the device vendor technical support for known issues, resolutions, updated drivers and troubleshooting information for the device.

Step 2: Restoring with System Restore
Use the steps in this section to restore Windows XP to an earlier time:
Turn off the computer.
Remove all attached devices except for the mouse, keyboard and monitor.
Turn on the computer.
When the We apologize for the inconvenience... message appears, use the UP or DOWN arrow key until Safe Mode with Command Prompt is highlighted and press Enter.
NOTE: If the computer stops responding or restarts automatically, skip to Step 6 to restart from the last known good configuration.

When the logon screen appears, select Administrator and enter the password (if applicable).
When the command window appears, type: cd \windows\system32\restore and press Enter.
Type: rstrui and press Enter. The System Restore screen will appear.
On the Welcome to System Restore window, select Restore my computer to an earlier time, then click Next.
On the Select a Restore Point window, select a date that is highlighted in bold print from the calendar.
Select a restore point from the window labeled, On this list, click a restore point and click Next.

If a message about closing programs appears, click OK. A Confirm Restore Point Selection window appears.
Click Next.
The PC should shut down and turn on automatically after the restoration completes and a Restoration Complete window should appear. If the PC stops responding, restarts automatically, or the error message reappears, skip to Step 6 to restart from the last known good configuration..
Click OK.
Restart the computer.
If the We apologize for the inconvenience... message reappears, continue with Step 3 to disable startup items that might be contributing to the problem.
If the error message does not reappear, you are done.

Step 3: Disabling startup items to start Windows
CAUTION: The steps in this section are used to prevent all startup items from opening INCLUDING antivirus software and other software that may provide important functions. Use these steps only for troubleshooting purposes:

Restart the computer.
At the first screen, press the F8 key repeatedly until the Windows Advanced Options Menu or the We apologize for the inconvenience... message appears.
Press the UP or DOWN Arrow KEYS until Safe Mode is highlighted. Press Enter to select it.
Select Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, or Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition.
When the logon screen appears, select Administrator and enter the password (if applicable).
Select Yes when the Windows is running in safe mode message appears.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type the following into the Open field: msconfig
Click OK.
When the System Configuration Utility window appears, remove the checkmark next to Load Startup Items.
Click OK.
Select Restart on the message that appears.
If Windows does not load successfully after using the System Configuration Utility, skip to step 6 to restart from the last known good configuration..

Step 6: Restarting from the last known good configuration
The Last Known Good Configuration feature provides a way to recover from configuration problems such as newly installed drivers that may be incorrect for the computer hardware configuration. It does not correct problems that are caused by missing or corrupted drivers or files.
If the computer is not at the Windows Advanced Options Menu, or the We apologize for the inconvenience... screen, use the steps in this section to restart Windows XP from a system restore point that was last known to work:
Restart the computer.
At the first screen, press the F8 key repeatedly until Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to select Last known good configuration.
Press Enter to start Windows XP.
If Windows still does not start normally, continue to Step 7 .
If the error does not return, you are done.

Now I tried to do Step 7 but I wasn't able to access the Advanced Options. Here's what step 7 said to do:

Step 7: Renaming the Catroot2 folder
Use the steps in this section to replace the Catroot2 folder:
Turn on the PC and press the F10 repeatedly at the first screen to start the recovery screens. If the recovery application doesn’t start, you can run the recovery from the Recovery CD or DVD discs. For more information, see Performing an HP System Recovery in Windows XP .
If you see a welcome screen, click OK.
Click Advanced Options and then press the Alt and D keys at the same time to go to a command prompt.
Type: diskpart, and then press Enter.
At the diskpart> prompt, type: list volume, and then press Enter.
A screen similar to the figure below should appear outlining the current drive letters in the system. Note the drive letter in the Ltr column next to the HP_PAVILION, or PRESARIO NTFS partition. You will need this drive letter to complete this process.
Figure 2: List Volume display

At the prompt, type: exit, and then press Enter.
Type in the drive letter you recorded in step 6 , followed by a colon, ‘:’ (without the quotes) and press Enter. (For example, C: PRESARIO or H: HP_PAVILION )
Type the following: cd \windows\system32
At the new prompt, type the following: rd /s catroot2
Type Y to confirm.
Restart the computer.
You may receive the We apologize for the inconvenience... message again. Let the timer complete the countdown from 30 to 0.
If the computer still does not start, continue to Step 8 and perform a recovery.
If the computer starts into Windows and the error does not return, you are done.

So seeing as I wasn't able to do Step 7 I dont know if it would solve the problem

So on the HP site it seems that my last option is to perform a HP Systems Recovery but I dont know what files this might remove/replace and what this will do to my computer. Is there any way that I can make a back up of all of my files? And what type of files will the systems recovery replace/remove?

So what else can I do to fix this problem??? And what caused the error to happen in the first place so that I can avoid this from happening again?
Quote from: torn.jeans on August 08, 2007, 11:30:52 AM

A hardware or software change might have caused this.
Well well, hardware or software.
I guess that is wright.
So you did recently added a hardware item?
I can't believe AVG is the problem here.
Safe mode doesn't work.
you say the computer keeps restarting.
Do you get a blue screen?
Are you able to read the error code?

Jonas nope. i havent recently added any hardware. and yeah when i try to start up windows normally a blue screen with white writting flashes but i dont know what it says cause it immediately restarts. its quite annoying. could it be a virus?? the last time i scanned with AVG i had like 490 viruses. thanks for the help 490 viruses?!
Well it could be that you're system is damaged by a virus.
I would recommend to reformat.
But then you will lose you're important data.
What you can do is installing a OS to a external HD and set the bios to boot up from external HD.
I hope this helps more than the other one

Jonas yah. i know thats a lot of viruses but it sounds about right seeing as i hadnt scanned for a while. but AVG sent them to the virus vault and healed/deleted them so i thought that i was virus free... so seeing as i really dont want to reformat, the second bit sounds better. k. so how do i install a os to a external hd and set the bios to boot up from the external hd? and will this allow me to access my files? i have no idea seeing as im kinda computer challenged. You may have difficulty ACCESSING the BIOS Setup utility screen, because you must press a specific key (usually F1, or Esc) very quickly before the Windows screen appears. If you do not enter the BIOS Setup screen on your first try, repeat the following steps until you are successful.
To open the BIOS Setup screen:
Turn off the computer and wait about 5 seconds.
Turn on the computer.
When the first screen appears, press the F1 or F10 key on the keyboard. (You can press the key more than once.) The BIOS Setup Utility Main menu appears.
NOTE: On certain Compaq Presario PCs (prior to 2002) press the F10 key at the logo screen to enter setup.
Use the keyboard to navigate through the menus.

It isn't possible to install windows on a external HD so you would need Linux in order to do that.

I have a even better Idea:
hook up you're HDD as a slave drive to you're other PC and you should be able to copy to your Files
If you find it will not allow you access to the old drive Here

Solve : Help! My computer needed validating and I tried bypassing it...?

Answer»

Okay, I bout my main computer, the tower kind, from a guy that built it about year ago. It was built as a gaming pc, so it has plenty of speed and memory and that stuff, haha. The problem is, is that WINDOWS asked me to validate my XP Home. I COULDNT validate, a friend to my mother in law does alot with computers, does something with telecomunications, anywhoo, he gave me a CD that was suppose to bypass the validation process so that I could participate with all the forums I was on online. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllllllll, it didnt work, now my computer will load up to that screen where when you log out it allows you to pick which user to log into, and when I click the only one there, me, it says, I forgot, been a bit, something LIKE "Windows could not validate" and wont go any further. I got a Windows XP Home cd from my mom and it wont spin the cd to load up, what can I do?You modified the core files of Windows, of course there was a chance that it wasn't going to work.

Reinstall Windows, and when you need to activate it, call Microsoft, tell them what you did, and they will give you a new code.

We cannot assist you in bypassing the validation in Microsoft. Will they not try and charge me, I am cheap, haha, well, trying to get off cheap. As long as you have a legal copy of XP they should not charge you to help validate your code, but ZYLSTRA is right, you do need to reinstall and give MS a call

Solve : check CPU usage?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me here. The last two days, i've been watching over the CPU Usage and PF Usage because i noticed that my computer has been very slow lately. I have always run AV and Anti Spyware pretty much very frequently.

Now, i just want to ask a silly question here for confirmation. In the task manager, i check the processes there everytime CPU usage is 100%. I think that would give me indication of which process actually consumes the usage. Am i right? or there is other things i need to check as well. Is there any way to figure out which process use how much of cpu usage? any other software that might do that for us?

My computer RUNS on XP Pro

Thank you in advanceThere should be a column named CPU, under it are the PERCENTAGES of how much of the cpu that process is using. If there's not, click View, Select Columns, then check CPU Usage.

100percent is rather high, unless you've got an OLD machine or you're running software that uses your idle processor for itself, such as [emailprotected]Thank you Anodoin,

Yes, i can see that (CPU) column there. I can see that there are a number of processes that have high Mem Usage (about 47,840K). I think, this would affect the PF usage. The other day, i saw PF Usage climbed up beyond the RAM size. It's about 2.1G. I've got only 1G RAM on the computer. It really worried me. I then restarted those processes and then i could see a bit of relief happening there. Don't know why it's doing that. Any ideas?

Thank you in advance What are all of the processes you are typically running? Which ones have the high Mem Usage? I wouldn't necessarily be worried about those numbers, but it definitely sounds like something is hogging up your resources. Do you have any Norton or McAfee PRODUCTS on your computer? Although normally used for detecting infections, a HijackThis log could help us determine what might be the problem. I would also suggest getting Process EXPLORER.

Solve : Blank windows update page (Problem with jscript.dll)?

Answer»

Hello, my computer is running windows XP and I have had the windows update page show up blank for a pretty long time now. I tried following all the Microsoft help page about the blank windows update page but none of that stuff worked.

I did a google search and came across this forum post:
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-xp/3363-windows-update-page-doesnt-load-its-blank.html

one of the guys said:
---------------------------------
Turns out a bunch of stuff was unregistered. Here's what worked for me:
regsvr32 jscript
regsvr32 vbscript
regsvr32 /i mshtml
---------------------------------

I tried to register the above stuff and here is what it said:

The vbscript one said "DllregisterServer in vbscript succeeded"

The jscript one says "Loadlibrary("jscript") failed - Access is denied."

The /i mshtml one says "mshtml was loaded, but the DllregisterServer entry point was not found. mshtml does not appear to be a .DLL or .OCX file."

So could it be that the problem is with the jscript.dll and the /i mshtml thing?

I also remember finding another site that said to register some other stuff aswell. I forgot what it said to register but there was also another thing that I tried to register and it didn't not succeed.

I have also downloaded and RAN the Windows Script 5.6 that I got from this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c717d943-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

When I run the Windows Script 5.6 file it says "Error REGISTERING the OCX C:\Windows\system32\jscript.dll" after I click okay it then says "Windows Script 5.6 is now installed"

So how can I fix this problem with jscript.dll??
I hope someone can help me because I have tried many times before to GET this fixed but I have never succeeded.

My computer is a HP Pavilion a1120n running Windows XP

Solve : create mulitiple folders fast?

Answer»

i have a text file that has over 1000 folder names, i have to creat a folder for each name in the text file. can anybody recommend a way to do this fast, using a program or dos command. I am current manually adding the folders Just google "creating multiple folders" and you'll find something. If the text file has the paths listed in a SIMPLE, line-by-line type of way, I'd create a batch program. For example, if my file had something LIKE:

c:\folder
c:\folder\nested
c:\folder\nested2 ..,etc

I WOULD add "md" to the beginning of each line, so it looked like:

md c:\folder
md c:\folder\nested
md c:\folder\nested2 ..,etc

And save that as a batch file. If it's not too FAR off from that format it'd be worth doing. You could run a search and replace function to change all the "c:\" into "md c:\"Quote

for /F "usebackq delims=" %%I in ("filename") do (
md %%I
)

Something like that?

Solve : re format hard drive??

Answer»

Hi I'm new to this site I was hoping someone could help me.

I am trying to refomat my hard drive as I have a few problems and would like to start fresh.

My OS is windows XP home, I have backed up all data and I have been researching how to reformat a hard drive for a few weeks now. I'm sure I can do it but I am having trouble getting started.

I have changed the set up in BIOS to boot from a cd, when the computer is loading and the message "press any key to boot from cd" appears I press a key(well have have just about tried pressing every key) nothing happens it STILL boots into windows. What am I doing wrong?

I have all the disks and information needed to reformat my hard drive but I can't get the computer to boot from a cd.

Any suggestions on how to sort this problem out would be great.

ThanksWhat CD is this?check with ANOTHER bootable CD.If using a USB keyboard, maybe computer cannot see it at CD-ROM boot stage because USB legacy support not enabled in the BIOS setup. Try a PS/2 type to enable CD-ROM boot choice keypress and also to enable BIOS setup access.

PS/2 keyboards use this PLUG. PS/2 is an old IBM term and is NOTHING to do with Playstations!

thanks for listening

contrex thankyou very much I plugged my keyboard in properly(I had it plugged in through the usb as I usually use a wireless keyboard) and it all WORKED perfectly I now have a clean computer and hopefully no more problems.

This site is great now I know where to go if I have any more problems
ThanksQuote from: contrex on August 08, 2007, 02:50:32 AM

Ha, I love that. It's SURPRISING how many people actually think we're talking about PlayStation2.

And bjh, I'm glad to hear everything is sorted out. I hope our fine folks here will be able to help you out with other future problems you may come across.Everybody I mention PS/2 connectors to, who is aged under about 35, thinks I am talking about Playstations!

I should just mention that there is a PS/2 mouse connector as well. The keyboard one is usually a sort of purple mauve violet colour and the mouse one is usually green.

Another name for them is "mini-DIN" connectors.

Reinstall?! REMOVE!!!

heh, I found this:

Quote
I've been hesitant to name the exact email client that frustrates me so much out of fear of offending users. However, I think the time has come.

I wish people wouldn't use Incredimail. Why you ask?

Incredimail makes your email messages huge. I've seen messages as large as 800K. More commonly the emails are around 80k. This is still about 10 times larger than not-so-incredible emails.

No one will take your seriously. Do you think people would like it if you hummed "If you're happy and you know it" for 30 seconds after each voicemail you left? Then why do you think people ENJOY the 14 DANCING smiley faces attached to each email your send?

It labels you as technically illiterate. Resumes authored from Incredimail go right in the garbage.

It looks like spam - and SOMETIMES it is. Incredimail adds all sorts of crap to email. In fact, you might even say the products primary purpose is to add crap to email. Antispam tools see this junk and filter it out as spam. The free version of Incredimail attaches advertisements to each message - making it all the more like spam.

Some junk email filters are specifically tuned to let most Incredimail messages through. The same isn't necessarily the case for other filters. If you're using Incredimail - a good chunk of your messages may never reach their destination.

If you're an existing user and I've offended you, sorry.

Rob... your judgement is exemplary well I do thank you for your opinion , i will change post haste , I was not aware I guess it was such a problem

I will reload to another email server and see how it all goes

So my church is having a garage sale. And someone donated a HP Pavilion 7850 that ran Windows ME. The person who had it, started to install Windows XP but didn't finish installing.

So now when the computer starts it goes to the Windows XP Installation page and says "Please insert PACK 2 CD to continue installation"

Is there a way to get to remove the installation of Windows XP so it's just Windows ME on the computer?

I can do that in DOS Mode right?

Also, an IBM ThinkCentre was donated. I got it to run, but it just goes to a black screen after it boots up.

It also runs Windows XP.LolSorry I would never buy a computer at a garage sale so... we will try to help GIVE me a mo.Quote from: Mulreay on June 05, 2009, 01:58:35 PM

Solve : Windows Registry to modify Desktop Items size?

Answer»

(I'm sorry, I'm not english, so excuse me if maybe I won't be clear at all!!!)
Because of high resolutions on LCD monitors, dimensions of the desktop's items usually become very very small...so I tryed to modify the sizes, like Icons, characters....I did it by the WINDOWS properties desktop menu (right click on the desktop etc.)

The problem is that I wasn't able to modify ALL of the items using windows properties...and I need the windows register in order to do it! And here is where I need your help!

The Desktop items that I can't modify by windows are the following:

1) In the task bar I managed to increase Icons sizes, but the character text stayed small (The START text, the clock etc.

2) Icons and Characters in the address bar are still small
NOTE: I managed to increase that ICONS adding the text "Shell Small Icon Size" in HKEY_CURRENT_USER,Desktop,WindowsMetrics) but only because I found how to do it on google:)

3) Arrow mouse Size (is small)

4) When I GO to propreties, clicking right with the mouse and than properties, all the window SHOWED remained small sized

5) When I open a window the left menu remained small

Does anyone KNOWS the register commands (to insert or to modify) in order to modify those parameters?
Thanks!!!

I'm going to be honest... Nobody here wants to change your registry for you. There is a wealth of issues by doing this. You are running massive risks by changing your registry. I can only leave it at that. Atleast you got a reply. What Windows version is it to start with?I haven't used this though it may help your problem

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

Incidently, your English is to be highly commended.....If you increase the Font size you may get the desired result without changing the resolution size...
Keep in mind you need to give it a name as a Theme and re-boot to save the CHANGES...
Best of Luck.

Solve : taskbar?

Answer»

When i play computer games, the whole screen used to be taken up by the game. Now for some reason i`ve got the taskbar showing below the screen that i cant get rid of. This annoyingly means when i move the mouse in the game, it can freeze the game & go into the desktop. How do i stop this from happening & get rid of the taskbar? I would say there is a setting within the game application that allows you to SHOW or hide the TASK bar......(just maybe) Read up on the game documentation and see if there is anything you can do to RESET the settings to default.......

If you cannot find anything within the game application to adjust this setting, you could work around the problem and right-click on the task bar in Windows>select properties>and check the box that says, "auto-hide the task bar"... This way, when you are not using the task bar it is always hidden...unless you move the mouse point to the very bottom of the screen...........however, I don't know if this well prevent the desktop from appearing, when you accidentally move the mouse..Unlock the Taskbar and set it to auto-hide...whenever this happens to me, I'm usually able to ALT tab from and back to the game to get rid of the taskbar. Usually just clicking on the game WORKS, though. You can also try pressing ALT + Enter to enter full screen mode.Pressing alt+enter works

thanks for the help

Solve : How to type, in a design produced by using "Paint" ??

Answer»

I have created a esign with the help of PAINT. I wish to enter a digit and a few alphabets in it. How to do this ? Please help .On paint you should see a large A icon in the tool box on the left, click on this. You will now see two icons appear below that. The bottom one allows you to type over an image WITHOUT affecting the picture. The top will have a big open white box so don't use that. I've added an example.
So choose the bottom icon then over the place you want to write do a drag box, so left click and spread the text box out to where you want it then another box will appear at the top allowing you to adjust fonts ect. Then type away.

[attachment deleted by admin]if you are somehow still not sure where that "A" icon is ... the screenshot below should help you out.

Solve : Computer turns off after 1-2 minutes of being on.?

Answer»

I didn't know where to put this because I'm not sure if its a software or HARDWARE problem. So, here goes...

My computer RUNNING XP shuts off about 1-2 minutes after turning on.

Before shutting it down the last time before these strange turn-offs started happening, I was doing a windows update. It was taking FOREVER so I pressed the "Cancel" button on the update window. After it was COMPLETELY canceled, I turned the computer off by shutting it down correctly via the Start > Turn off Computer.

Now, every time it boots up, after 1-2 minutes it instantly turns down. It doesn't matter if windows has been LOADED or not(like just sitting at the screen after you hit F8 on startup).

I also replaced the power supply to see if that was the problem, but it still shuts off.

Please help me. The computer has valuable data, and I would rather not have to put the hard-drive in another computer just to get the information, if that would even work.
Thanks! Is your CPU fan running?.....is the heatsink seated flush to the motherboard? Any beeps at startup?....... Reseat your memory as well....Any changes in power options.....Quote

I think, you messed up your Windows installation, and it's not a hardware problem.

Solve : Missing File "BOOTMGR' can barely run any exe's including explorer.exe?

Answer»

"A DISK READ ERROR OCCURRED

so my friend is having trouble with his computer(windows vista) so im trying to find the problem with command prompt because it will not load up, and i don't know if its just this computer but it is refusing to give me the OPTION of booting to safe mode. i doubt its a virus problem because he has bit defender 2009 internet security. i have managed to get the task manager up from command prompt and explorer.exe was not running (obvious) so i believe there is a missing file\folder "BOOTMGR" any help very appreciated.

Windows Vista home premium 64x
3gb ddr3 memory
ATI Radeon HD 4850
750 gb hard drive
Intel core i7-920 Quad core processor
Do you have Vista DVD?You will need to run the fixmbr command at command prompt.

Boot to your Vista DVD and select repair your computer. Then from the "choose a recovery tool" screen select Command Prompt. then type in:

bootrec.exe /fixmbr and press enter
then type in:
bootrec.exe /FIXBOOT and press enter

Remove the DVD and restart.

If you don't have the Vista DVD you can try this one:
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/
to create a bootable DVD. You will need a program like this one:
http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
to burn the ISO to a disk.

Good Luck!@Broni.
well, he doesn't have the disk because he bought it from best buy and they didn't give him the disk, just the bundle of keyboard mouse etc with the computer.

@JJ 3000
Thanks so much!. i'm downloading the x64 right now.
so next time i head to his house i can fix.

Thank you guys!i don't know what im doing wrong, i did what you told me and it still doesn't workBoot to the disk again and this time select "Startup Repair".yea, i tried everything i can. from microsoft . the recovery disk.

so hes going to take it to best buys. get it fixed and im gunna go with.In most cases, Vista doesn't need DVD to run, and fix eventual errors by running:
sfc /scannow
so you can give it a shot.

Also, lost ability of booting into Safe Mode is often a sign of some infection.

Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administratorsorry, but im not at his house any more.

and:
i can't run most programs. gives me a "....shell32......errror.....blah blah"

but i can locate my self around but chkdsk does not work.

when i start it. it runs under startup repair and everythingI think, reinstalling Windows would be much cheaper, than GeekSquad, unless the computer is under warranty.yea. he bought it a month ago.
ill talk about it tomorrow with him.
but his computer is just about brand NEW. some beastly parts in it. completely pwns mine down and his broke in a month.

my computer is an xp right after it came out and its still running great.

he barley USES it so it has so be some flaw with his current version vs sp2

and trust me, he isn't the type of person to download alot. thats me.

and he plays nothing but valve steam games.

and thats pretty much it.
sorry for my bad grammatical "and's"
Well if it's still under warranty, you can get it fixed for free. You might even be able to exchange for a new one.yea, thats the thing, i don't know if he put one on it.

and he said best buy put a 14 day warranty on it Quote from: BatchFileBasics on June 03, 2009, 10:48:26 PM

yea, thats the thing, i don't know if he put one on it.

and he said best buy put a 14 day warranty on it

I've never heard of this on a new machine...usually the Minimum is 1 Year...yea, so were going back on saturday to get it fixed and what-not. see if the warranty is for than 2 weeks etc

I cant saw whether it will work or not, but I can say it WONT be the safest/greatest idea, as if you installed or modified your system, and then restored, you would loose those CHANGES.

There are programs meant for restoring deleted web DATA, but my best recommendations is simply to install web filtering software. There is a free one called K9, recommended by Rob Pomeroy (an old CH member) that works quite WELL. See here: http://www1.k9webprotection.com/You could always check the cookies but you will have to know what you're looking for.Even if history is deleted, all data is still in INDEX.DAT file.

Solve : boot up problems with windows xp driver issue maybe or failing hardware??

Answer»

OK so I did a brand new XP INSTALL..... new partion and everyone booted up < 5 times

My problem is windows XP has the windows classic look. very plain and square. windows 95 look to it.

Once and a while (twice) it says that a certain file (same one) has been recovered successfully. When the desktop first shows up.

My thoughts It's either Hardware or drivers I used Original Driver CD for motherboard. Mostly integrated things. This Problem STARTED after i installed drivers and added second ram chip. Ram is the same type, speed, brand, Identical. (were tested and good but can try with a suggested program)

Possible Hardware causing it. (what i think might be it)
*Motherboard ----- unknown (using it's integrated Graphics)
*Memory ----- 1024 MB (512 used for install)(WOULD not work with both chips in)
*Hard Drive ----- Like 10 gig or something (old but ran Linux fine)

Know this is good but always good to have all info:)
*Processor ----- AMD 2.2 GHZ
*sound-Integrated
*ethernet-IntegratedWhat type of XP CD was this ? ?

I wouldn't start suspecting hardware right off the bat.ahve you tried changing display properties??Quote from: programming_pat on December 11, 2007, 04:22:38 PM

ahve you tried changing display properties??

XP view and Windows Classic look have nothing to do with Display Properties.
XP CD INFO

WINDOWS XP Professional Service pack 2.

More INFO on Boot up
I remember why this comp was giving me problems. Cause it's doing it again.
1. Press power button
2. Goes through Bios start up
3. Comes to windows XP screen with blue bar scrolling across.
This where it goes Bad
4. Screen Blank comes back up runs through bios stuff again
5. comes to screen that says the whole (windows failed to boot)
The place where you can choose to boot in safe mode normal mode with networking. pretty much i just do normal mode or let it sit and it auto boot in normal mode.
6. Now It either boots up perfectly fine Or Goes Back to #3

It will Go within less then three or four tries everytime. and as i said in my first post it shows me that message that says it has loaded something from a recovery file.

I am thinking it either my Mother board driver or my old as ____ Hard Drive.
What Are your Ideas?
DLoad and run the diagnostics from your HDD manuf. site...Free.
Use it to create a bootable CD/Floppy and run the complete test.
This will tell you if it's the hard drive.
I'd also DLoad and run MemTest....let it run a few hours.
Any errors at all means it is a RAM issue. If you get errors power down and run 1 STICK at a time to determine which is bad.
After that i'd borrow a PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there. This is another possible culprit as well.OK thank you

My power SUPPLY unit is like 500watts i don't think i need that much for my machine it doesn't have that much plugged in. 350 watts should run fine it plugs into motho cd rom and hard drive....

i will run mem test any programs you suggest?

and hard drive maybe be last thing i check it ran linux fine..... with 1 mem stick in.MemTest

Solve : Logitech QuickCam Express causes the "System" process to jump to 100% CPU usage?

Answer»

Okay, so, I bought a Logitech QuickCam Express last night at Walmart for $26.. it was a GOOD buy. I got it home, and i used it on my computer, and it worked fine.
Then, this morning, I got up, went to use it, and my computer almost COMPLETELY stopped responding.
I opened up TASK manager to investigate, and this: http://sexy.whatisnotmyip.com/jperkins/*SPAM*.png is what I found.
I tried updating the drivers to the latest version, i've restarted a million times, and nothing's changed.
Anytime the green light on my camera comes on, my computer slows to a crawl and System starts using 100% CPU. as soon as i unplug the camera, or stop the program that's using it, it starts acting like normal again.
Anyone got any advice?
what are your system specs? in other words cpu, memory e.c.t. It sounds like your computer cant handle itCan't exactly see all the processes running from that screenshot however it looks like FireFox GOBBLING up the most...
DLoad and install Process Explorer to give you a clearer view of exactly what is happening...Okay, I figured something out. If I uninstall the drivers, restart, and then REINSTALL them, the camera works fine until the next reboot, when I have to reinstall the drivers again.

@ programming_pat:
I know my computer is capable of using the webcam, because as I previously stated, it works fine until I reboot.

@ patio:
I'll give process explorer a try.

thanks a bunch for the help.
-John

EDIT: Okay, I ran process explorer, and started Logitech QuickCapture, and as expected, System shot up to almost 100% CPU usage. I couldn't see any sub-processes of System using any CPU at all.
This is really confusing.. Return it for a replacement.
Although it may not be the hardware this will eliminate it as a possibility.
Also check Logitech's site to see if there are any issues with this unit...

Solve : Upgrading OS systems?

Answer»

I am trying to upgrade my system OS from windows 98 to windows xp home edition. My questions REALLY revolve around data transfer b/w the two OS systems. I don't want to lose any files. I also want to know if upgrading the OS will cause problems with any of the programs that are installed on my current system (programs preinstalled when the computer was bought), if those programs will also transfer, and what I can do if they won't transfer. This is a christmas present for my mom, and it's her puter and data, so I don't want to screw it up!!! PLEASE HELP!!!An upgrade will keep intact your data and programs.

But its Microsoft you know.
Better to back up your data first. Also wanna check that the hardware is upto it.

Double check how much RAM and HDD space she's got.You don't have much time until Christmas. It may or may not working because some old programs don't work with the new OS. I have many old programs worked with Win9X but it didn't work on Windows XP Home Edition. I contacted vendors, they told me to buy a new VERSION. Be sure you back up everything on the computer before you upgrade. Quote from: Sid on December 12, 2007, 11:50:27 AM

Yes, be sure to do this. Otherwise, you, and your mom, MIGHT be disappointed.

How much RAM does it have? What size hard drive? How much free space on the hard drive? Also, what processor is in that machine?

Careful with this advice...this is not neccessarily true depending on the method USED.

Solve : Domain Log on not allowed?

Answer»

I am having an issue where the domain will not allow me to log on , it does not effect all computers, just a few. The computer is from a DIFFERENT timezone but is set correctly for it's current timezone. When I unplug it FORM the network I can get LOGGED in and then reconnect the network cable and I have a full connection. I need to fiqure out what is causing this. Anyone have some thoughts? where is this network, home/work e.c.t. The timezone wont affect the domain LOGON process. do you have a firewall installed? It is the work domain, the issue suddenly popped up as well, here is exact what it SAYS:

"The system cannot log you on now because the domain NAMEHERE is not available"

I was able to fix this for one person by resetting their password.

Solve : NTLDR is missing???

Answer»

I put my XP disc in my drive and nothing happened, again! I've given up and took it in to a shop to be repaired. Thanks for all your help anyway.Be sure and post back what was the problem, what fixed it and what it cost. Not sure what the problem was, the c drive was re-formatted and the operating system wiped and re-installed. I was charged £40 for labour. Probably a good LITTLE EARNER for them but what can you do? Well, glad you're all fixed up and thanks for posting back.I'm having the same problem; and I have tried everything that was suggested EARLIER. I still can't get my computer to reboot correctly even after I added the files to the hard drive successfully from my ms cd.

So my next option I was suggested by a friend is to buy a new hard drive and use this one as a file storage hard drive for my pictures and use the new hard drive for my operating system? Since after doing the bootcfg /scan; it shows I haven't any physical problems with the hard drive.

After ADDING a new hard drive to boot from would I be able to access my old hard drive to get to my files?

Anyone know if this would work?Yes it will work fine...
All you do is set the jumper on that drive to SLAVE and move it to the middle connector on the IDE cable. You will be able to copy/move or view any files that were on that drive ...It will simply show up as another drive in Windows Explorer.Horray!!!

Thank you for your response Patio. I will do just that.

Your a great humanitarian.

Solve : Laptop comes out of hibernation, goes back in?

Answer»

Hi
I have a NEC Versa E3100 laptop running on Windows XP SP2. I connect to the internet via a SATELLITE broadband connection (connected by the time the laptop comes on) and usually run on 230v connection. At the moment I am running on the batteries to check their operation, but all seems OK.

My problem is that when I switch on in the morning to bring the laptop out of hibernation, it loads up then immediately goes BACK into hibernation. The next time I switch on, everything boots OK. It also seems to happen when I switch on after having closed down (switched off) the laptop overnight using the 'Turn off computer' window.

The unit is set up to hibernate when the power switch is is pressed.

This problem began about a month ago and I can't identify any system changes at the time.

I run Counterspy, Avira AntiVir on schedules and REGULARLY clean the registry and check the disk operation. I am running Diskeeper auto defrag settings so the unit is never bogged down.

Anyone got any ideas other than the batteries might be the problem. They indicate 'charging' after the unit is switched on and are at the moment SHOWING 83% after about half an hour of non-mains operation.

Cheers
Gary

Solve : Missing tab in Display properties?

Answer»

System Configuration :

INTEL Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz E4400
Intel D945 GCPE Motherboard
Seagate 160 GB IDE HDD,
1 GB RAM
LG DVD writer
Windows Xp SP2

Problem :

After using this MONTH (November-07) 's Digit CD, all the tabs except Themes tab in the Display properties such as Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearance, Settings have gone missing. When I opened Device Manager, I found that Display driver got un-installed-having yellow exclamation mark. I tried to update driver but could not update it properly. I also un-installed and then re-installed but driver problem was not gone. Finally, I did System Restore. As a result, display driver problem was solved. But, the problem of missing tabs still remains unsolved.

At the TIME of using DIGIT CD, the COLOUR quality in Settings tab was 16 bit 800 x 600 resolution.

Kindly suggest me how to fix the problem.

Solve : Windows XP restarting during loading screen!?

Answer»

Hi, I'm in serious need of help, when the loading screen for XP appears after 2 bars the computer reboots intself and presents me with the options to run in safe mode etc. which do not work. I have tried to do a repair install however i am not presented with the repair option where you select which partition you want to install xp on.

Right now I have 3 partitions, Main One (C:) which is unknown whereas D: is NTFS and so is E:.
I have the program Acronis Disk Director Suite+True Image recovery on boot disc. Using this program I can easily see all the files in my C:(corrupted) drive such as my documents which have most of the files i want!!! Using Acronis i have created a backup file of my documents( a tif file??)

I had the idea of installing Windows on another partition and transferring all the files from the corrupt drive to the new partition however when i try to choose it says i must format the drive which i thought meant the whole HARD drive I didn't want to take the risk of losing everything so i quickly shut down the setup.

I've used Partition Magic 8 to scan the corrupt drive but it says Critical meaning catastrophic something and it can't fix it. However i was able to see all the files in the drive using acronis.

Im out of ideas of what to do now and hope you guys would know what my best option might be? I just want to get my SYSTEM back to what it was without losing the files i want. I don't mind losing the programs but maybe there's a way in which i can fix the windows files in my corrupt drive or something?
If you need anymore information please tell me. Thank you

Solve : HELP - computer won't start?

Answer»

Hi, need some help here. Went to computer today, which is always on. All I get on the SCREEN is what I call the configuration page you see when you need to adjust your monitor (the page with the ICONS that allows you to adjust size, etc.). When I tried to shut down the computer, I had to kill the power as it would not shut off even after holding the button in for 20 seconds. When I turned it on, I received the same screen on the monitor. It also does not seem as if the MOUSE is working. I've checked all connections and EVERYTHING seems to be connected properly. Major problem is I have quickbooks pro 2002 on a separate drive on this computer. I do not have the original disks. Any advice would be greatly appreceiated. Try booting in Safe Mode when your computer is first turned on.

Solve : Automated Install?

Answer»

Hey, guys...

I have a school project due SOON and I was wondering if you could possibly help?

I need to make an answer file that does an automated install of Windows 2000 Professional.

I KNOW I can use the Wizard on the CD, and I did. However, I have a two issues.

1) My teacher says it has to be 100% automated, so what's the command(s) to make it autopartition and autoformat (NTFS).
I think it's something like FileSystem=ConvertNTFS or something, but not 100% sure.

2) When I enter the CD and Floppy (floppy has the winnt.sif file on it), I get an error.
The error I get is "Disk I/O Error - 00080000"
The error goes away after I partition the hard DRIVE though.Welcome to the CH forums.

Filesystem= Repartition= and Autopartition= are shown on this site.

Note the advice not to insert the floppy until "Windows 2000 SETUP" is displayed.

Lots more info on the WWW, Google for Windows 2000 unattended install

Good luck with your project

Solve : SP2 reinstall: Access Denied....?

Answer»

Doing a repair of XP Pro and have SP1 installed, but keep GETTING an access denied red bang when trying to get SP2 going on this MACHINE. Had to do a repair because a registry cleaner TOOK out some settings for Windows. Tried removing all the Hotfixes and SP2 updates from the sys. in Add/Remove Prog., but that hasn't helped. Got the SP2 disk and tried downloading and installing from MS Updates but neither has worked. ALSO, turned off my AV and Firewall to see if that was the "block", but keep getting the same RedBang of BadNews!
What am I missing? Are you the Administrator I have gone into Control Panel and have our profile listed as Administrator, but some of the other changes I have tried to make lead me to believe that the Admin. privilages are not applied. For instance when I go into MSCONFIG. I always get a notice that I can only make changes as an Admin. , but the changes take affect anyway.

How do I make sure that Admin is the default for our profile?

Solve : Building 1st comp, can I use previous XP disc??

Answer»

I'm BUILDING my first computer next week and I don't know what I'm doing. I am looking forward to learning as I go, but I have a question about the OS. Can I use the windows XP disc that came with my Dell on my NEW BUILD or will I have to buy a new OS?

Thanks for any help!
JeremyNo, your XP disk is tied up to your old computer hardware. You can still use it in your new computer, if you reformat it. You'll also need OS CD.Depends on the CD...
If it is a Dell Restore CD also known as an OEM CD it will only install PROPERLY on that Dell as Broni suggested.
If it is a shiny XP CD with holograms and says MS all over it it can be installed on the new machine provided it is deleted from the old machine. It will have to be re-activated thru MS.

I won't EVEN go into Volume liscense CD's...

Solve : Single Image Problems?

Answer»

I am building a single image to use on my all dell network (Laptops
and desktops). I am creating the image on Microsoft Virtual Machine
2007. Once everything is installed (software) I add my drivers and
then push it up to the server using ghost. When adding the image to
the Optiplex 755 It goes into an endless loop or restarts. The only
thing I can think of that would cause this is the SATA hard drive.
Any one have any thoughts or had this problem?

My install Notes/Instructions are shown below in a basic nutshell:

Step 1.) Install windows onto your starting PC (Virtual PC 2007)

Step 2.) Check device manager for drivers not installed by windows
(NOTE: DO THIS ON ALL PC MODELS THAT THE IMAGE WILL BE USED ON)

Step 3.) Once you have identified the drivers, download them and
expand the files... Dell places them in the C:\dell\R98765 naming
convention by default. Otherwise use Winrar to uncompress the
drivers.

Step 4.) Move these "R" folders into c:\windows\drv so that the folder
structure looks like: c:\windows\drv\R12345... etc... You can remove any
sub folders from the drivers' individual folders that INDICATE a
different OS win98, win95, winnt (if there is a winxp exclusively)...
This MINIMIZES image size and path size making image load quicker.

Step 6.) Create a sub folder under the windows directory and call it
i386 ("c:\windows\i386") then copy the contests of your CD's i386
directory into it. (MAKE SURE ALL CONTENTS ARE COPIED)

Step 7.) Copy the "sysprep" directory to the root of the drive... "c:
\sysprep".

Step 8.) Move completed SYSPREP.INF to the sysprep folder or create a
new one with the setup manager wizard.

Step 9.) Run oempath.exe from command prompted and have it pointing
to driver directory. (Example: oempath c:\windows\drv) (The maximum
length in Windows XP is 4096... This is your only limitation with
drivers.)

(NOTE)There is an output txt file and also a registry file. You can
use the registry file to test future builds and driver adds and the
txt file is used for the ability to see what has been done.

Step 10.) Run Registry editing Script provided by Administrator (

(Registry Update Shown Below:)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]

"SourcePath"="c:\\windows"

"ServicePackSourcePath"="c:\\windows"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]

"SourcePath"="c:\\windows\\i386"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
\winlogon]

"LogonType"="0"

Step 11.) Finally, the FOLLOWING entries MUST appear at the end of
sysprep.inf:
(These are critical for you to get sysprep to look at all Mass Storage
Drivers)

[Sysprep]

BuildMassStorageSection=Yes

[SysprepMassStorage]

Step 12.) Execute sysprep (This will take some time!)

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks,

Guardian

PS: I have changed the BIOS to ATA and Legacy mode.
So, from what I understand is you're using a guest OS on your host OS with Virtual PC2007.
And in the guest OS you're trying to create an image?

Could please tell what the host OS is and what the gues OS is?The host OS is Windows XP Tablet Edition (SP2) while the guest OS is Windows XP Pro SP2 that is being installed in the virtual environment provided by the Microsoft Virtual Machine 2007. From that virtual machine I am trying to create a master image that works on all hardware in our environment.I'm afraid this couldn't work.
Simply and only because the slightest difference in motheboards.

It would be like installing WinXP on a HD without drivers, and take this HD to another pc.
It won't work.Ok this does work on every device BUT the 755.

To help explain why it works is because I make changes in the registry to where the i386 folder is from the CD and put all of the drivers on the image so when it is doing the mini setup it is installing the drivers that it NEEDS. Kind of a cliff note explanation but it does work until now. There has not been any error messages in the event log or anything. I can give a full explanation if requested.
