Solve : ctrl alt del process box has changed?

Answer»

hi there

i am runnning a intel cel 2.4 with 2.0 gig of ram with windows xp sp2 and i dont know what i did for my ctr+alt+del box to change, some help here would be mucho appriciated to return it to its original format

ctrl alt del only shows PROCESSES box and cannot be closed

bartrobTry fix #264 from here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htmthat seems an excellent page i will try a few of the tweaks later but sad to say that the tweak to fix my task manager box did not work

back to the drawing boar i guessHow did you run that fix, if I may ask?

Also...did you try System Restore?i wasnt sure how to run the fix so after i downloaded it i double clicked on it and it OPENED with notepad and i was able to read
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\TaskManager]

not sure if it had done anything so i then right clicked on the folder and was given the option to "merge"

i then tried ctrl alt del and it was the same i then rebooted and it was still the sameQuote
was given the option to "merge"
Did you say YES?ok we may have found another problem???

there is no other boxes either underneath or on top asking any questions of acceptance???

ps thanks for taking the time to help btwok the situation is this

i have fixed the problem i opened "regedit" clicked on file/IMPORT then selected the file you so kindly showed me hit import and voila it has now changed back to the old task manager box

thank you so much for your help i will be using a few other FIXES from that page you showed me

bartrob
Nice I'm glad it's fixed.
I suspect what your problem is.
When you go to that page, further action depends on what browser you're using.
With IE, when you click on "fix" link, it gives you an option to save the file as "xxxx.reg". Then, you double click on it, and it asks you, if you want to "merge".
With Firefox, when you click on "fix" link, it'll open new tab with just plain TEXT. You have to select everything, copy, paste it in Notepad, and save it as "xxxx.reg". Then, you double click on it to "merge" it.
Alternatively, you can right click on "fix" link, and click "Save link as". It'll save it right away as "xxxx.reg". Double click it to "merge".

Solve : intel boot agent?

Answer»

in the past week and a half, or so, when booting up, or rebooting, I'm getting a dos screen, that basically says "intel boot agent" with some description. At the bottom of the description, there's a cursor mark rotating....this screen hangs for 15 secs or a little more, and then the computer boots up. I haven't done any changes to the bios or boot order.
Any idea why I'm SEEING this screen. I believe only once, on same screen, I saw a warning, per say, that said something in reference to a prob with the hard drive.
Running Windows xp/sp2, Intel PENTIUM 4, 3.00gigahertz, 2048mg of ram, which was just added a few weeks ago....took out 2 512's and added 2, 1g's.
any thoughts or opinions welcome.
Janice What is the 'some description'? What does it say?

Oh, and the EXPRESSION is 'per SE', it's Latin. thanks for the grammar lesson. Next time I boot up, I'll try to write down everything it says.

Solve : acpi compliant computer?

Answer»

Hi
I'm RUNNING xp which is not powering down after shutdown. So I'm TRYING to find out if my computer is ACPI compliant. When I look in device MANAGER>computer is see two entries which seems strange. One says ACPI UNIPROCESSOR PC and the other Standard PC. Why would there be two entries? The PC is a Sempron 3200 CPU on an Asus K8V-VM motherboard. Any ideas?

Solve : deleted active partition!?

Answer» HI there, im after getting myself into a spot of bother. i have a targa visionary xp-210. i wiped it and installed xp pro sp. 2.

but the drive had two partitions, so i deleted one and CREATED a new one from it. i them merged the two partitions, USING partition magic, which required a re-start.

but, when i restarted it turned out i had deleted the active partition. now theres no active partition, and it wont boot.

it wont read the dvd drive.

it will read a usb drive.

the only bios i can find is by pressing F8 repeatedly, this is what it LOOKS like on that screen;

USB RMD-FDD : Generic USB Stor age-SMC

IDE-0 : TOSHIBA MK6021GAS

BBS-0 : Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)

[up/Dn] Select [Return] Boot [ESC] cancel

i have no clue what to do at this stage. can anyone help?

thanks for reading,
ned .TRAVEL to bootdisk.com and DLoad the WinME bootdisk.
Use the file to create a bootable floppy/CD.
Boot to the disk and at the A: prompt type fdisk and hit enter.
Use FDisk to partition and set the first partition active.
NOTE: You will then have to run format before you can use the new setup...

p.s. This will also load drivers that will enable you to use the optical drive...

Solve : 64bit windows?

Answer»

I have a laptop, which i BOUGHT about a year ago. This week I got to know that its processor is a 64 bit processor. The windows which was installed on it is a 32 bit windows though.
Do i meet any problems if i switch to the 64 bit version ?

THANKS a lot

P.S. The procesor is an Intel T7400Not necessarily... you will need to check whether 64 bit drivers is available for your hardware. Both for the laptop and for any peripherals you have attached, like a printer or scanner. The place to start would be the laptop manufacturer's homepage. If you're a bit lucky you can DOWNLOAD 64 bit drivers for your laptop from there. When I got my NEW MOBO and AMD64 CPU, I switched to WinXP 64 bit.
The CD I got with my mobo only had 32 bit drivers, but 64 bit drivers weren't that HARD to find.

The only one I had to search for a lil while was for my printer, but I did find it.

Solve : mysterious moving desktop icons?

Answer»

I have a problem with windows XP. The computer has multiple user accounts and each has their own desktop and there is an all users folder for the desktop.
What ends up happening is when one user moves or deletes a shortcut from the all users group it dissapears from everyones desktop not just theirs. This doesn't seem right. Is there anything WRONG or something that needs to be changed to stop this.First of all, nothing's wrong

If you open Windows Explorer, browse to the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings.
Here you see a couple folders:

-All users
-Administrator

plus a folder for each user.

If you open your own folder, you'll see a folder Desktop there.
All the icons for programs you use, are there (EXCEPT the STANDARD icons: My Computer, Internet Explorer, etc etc).
Now when you look in the Desktop folder under your name, it may be empty. But you still have all kinds of icons on your desktop, how is that possible?

Well open the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Desktop
Here you see all the icons that are on everybody's desktop (including yours).
If someone would delete one of the icons, it would indeed affect all users (including yourself).

Now, how to prevent that.
If there are programs that you use, and you only, simply move the icon from:
C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Desktop
to
C:\Documents and Settings\*your name*\DesktopSo if one person deletes the shortcut from that comes from the all users section the it will dissapear for all users. And the only way to stop it from dissapearing on every user is to have the shortcut in every users desktop folder but the one that doesn't want it.
If I'm UNDERSTANDING this right it is anoying. Thanks for the help.

Solve : Can't load?

Answer»

Without a multimeter and that computer right in front of me, I couldn't tell you for sure. The next STEP would most likely be to change out the power supply and see if that fixes it.Well, everyone thanks for all your advices and helps. I couldn't get it running. I bought a new Power Supply Unit cost $80 bucks but it didn't WORK. I gave up fixing it. I bought a new motherboard $70 bucks. It solved the problem. Luckily, this new motherboard takes my old CPU, and other old PARTS except memory I have to buy different type. It costed me $239 bucks to get my computer back to work. Thank you too all of you worked hard with me. This topic can be close now.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you out there!

Solve : XP home clone?

Answer»

i need to CLONE 3 pcs for work. i tried using norton ghost 8.0, but it wont install on xp home. is there any other way to do this?Ghost works on XP Home...
The only way this will work is if the machines have nearly identical Hardware....or you use the unattended install method.
Microsoft has tons of info on this.
MSFN Forums is another place to start.cus i tried installing and a window popped up saying it COULDNT install on windows 9x, me, or xp home.Where did this version of Ghost come from ? ?

a friendSounds to me like it's a demo, proprietary, or hacked version. Even if it's a legitimate version, it's most likely licensed for 1 system only. Under any of those circumstances, including 'I borrowed it from a friend', it's still piracy. I suggest you pick up a legitimate COPY, your problem should GO away. Please Re-read the Forum RULES regarding illegal software.

Solve : Windows XP help por favor?

Answer»

alright here are the specs for those who can help

OS: windows xp
Manufacturer: Vigor Gaming
Ram: 1GB
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 8600

and now the problem.

Alright I have had this comp for about 2-3 months with no problems, but a few days ago my laptop STARTED windows and about a quarter of the way through the loading screen it blinked blue and restarted and KEPT doing that over and over no matter what OPTIONS I chose. I formatted my hard-drive and re-installed XP and nothing happened just the same crap over and over. I disabled the auto restart on failure to LOAD XP but don't remember the technical numbers it gave me. I have uninstalled and re-installed about 8 times now and to no avail. If you have any advice PLEASE assist because for me to mail it in to get fixed would probably take 4 months from where I am at right now. Those error messages are critical...re-create the condition and hit the pause key immediately at the bluescreen...alright the message that I get is as follows

Technical information
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C7E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)If you are running any version of Roxio try un-installing it first...
If not...See Here

Was this laptop dropped by any chance ? ? If so also re-seat the HDD through the access panel.alright I checked the HDD and there is no possible way it could have moved within anything of a centimeter because it is screwed into the laptop. What is the pause button you mentioned earlier? I had to load windows on my external just to get the blue screen to stand still so I could write down the error message. If I am doing something wrong I apologize but I just want it to start working again. Being deployed sucks enough without a computer. The key is usually labelled Pause/Break...

Did you check out the link i provided for your error message ? ?

Solve : Recycler?

Answer»

I have XP Service Pack II. While ago I got a folder NAMED "Recycler" at 55.3KB and System Volume information folder ( empty folder ) in all the partions. The folder can not be deleted: In PROPERTIES, the " hidden " is TICKED in background and can not be unhidden!!!
I have a small network. When I go to my network PLACES the " Recycler/Sys Volume Info " is not there !!!
Is this a virus ? Kaspersky/Norton detects nothing.

Thanks for helping me out,
Farhad Mahini
([emailprotected])

EMail addy removed to prevent Spam. Both Recycler and System Volume Information are FOLDERS Windows XP creates automatically and you don't need to worry about them.
Recycler stores the files put into the Recycle Bin.
System Volume Information stores info needed by the System Restore feature.

I'm guessing you didn't see these folders before because windows wasn't configured to show hidden files and folders.
I can't tell you why the folders aren't showing up when you browse "My Network Places". As far as I can see they should.

Oh and you should remove your email addressee from your post. Else it might end up on a spammer's mailing list.

Solve : System completely freezes at boot sound.?

Answer»

My computer completely froze after it went to screensaver during the INSTALLING of new AC'97 codecs\driver. After restarting its fine until the boot sound after logging in, whereupon it COMPLETELY freezes when trying to play it. I tried rolling back my sound driver via Device Manager, but that didn't help. I'm POSTING this from Safe Mode.

Specs...
Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Pentium 4 3.06 GHz
896 MB RAM
Toshiba Satellite A75-S209
Realtek AC'97 soundcard
Radeon Mobility 9000 IGP Series videocardWhere did you get the new driver? From Toshiba? There are different versions of the AC'97 soundcard so you should only use a driver compatible with the specific version INSTALLED in your computer.

But try looking for any entries regarding your soundcard in "Add or Remove Programs".
If that doesn't work then uninstall your soundcard in device manager. This should allow you to enter windows normally again.
Then you can try reinstalling the new driver if it's from Toshiba (or you're confident it is compatible with your laptop) or install your old driver again. In the case of laptops it is advisable to only use the manuf.'s drivers in this case Toshiba...I got the EXE version here]http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#AC
File size 18043k

I just found this]http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=854280&moid=835416&rpn=PSA70U&[emailprotected]@[emailprotected]@&BV_EngineID=ccccaddmleeihjhcgfkceghdgngdgnn.0&ct=DL&all_docs=false
at Toshiba's page for my laptop model. Should I install it?

There are entries for my soundcard in Install\Unistall as well as Device Manger. Which should I try uinstalling first, if not both? I would start with those in Add/remove and see if that does the trick.

And yes use the driver from Toshiba instead of the one from Realtek.Booted fine after UNINSTALLATION of drivers. Now to install the Toshiba drivers.

This post posted in regular mode. Booted fine after installation of Toshiba drivers. Sound is back too!

Thanks a bunch Deerpark and patio!
Good to hear you've got it working again.

Excellent !

Stop by anytime ...

Solve : Internet quickly & randomly disconnects?

Answer»

It's something to do with my computer - the internet, router, and wireless card all work fine, with up to date drivers. It does the same when I wire directly to the router. I've used 2 different routers and modems, so it's not them either.

The internet will randomly disconnect, but only for a couple seconds. It will reconnect again right away. This wouldn't be a huge deal, but I'm a gamer, and it's very noticeable and frustrating.

My computer has also had this 'slowing problem', I'm not sure if they're related. Sometimes when the CPU usage will jump to 100% everything is in 'slow-motion'. It's most noticeable when I'm listening to music, the music will slow down, like playing a record slower, for just a couple seconds. Other slowing effects happen also. This usually only happens when I have a downloading program running, but it didn't used to do that, and shouldn't.

Has anyone else had this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : Drives not showing under My Computer?

Answer»

Quote from: mopy on December 05, 2007, 11:39:59 PM

I can not see in the BIOS "internal USB connectors are enabled" Or any thing simular.

That's ok. Not all of them have the option of enabling or disabling them.

Most motherboard's (not all, but most) have two USB headers, try the other one if you have one.

Have you checked the motherboard drivers YET? Like I said before, Windows may not see the USB headers without them. This may not be the PROBLEM, but it's a possibility to look into.

Speaking of which, what is the MODEL of the motherboard? I'd like to look it up. Forgive my ignorance but were would I find the mother board driver,I have looked in the device manager and found >system devices>motherboard resources.
There are two of these and they SAY "No drivers are installed for this device".
There is all so Human interface devices don't know what these are.
Mopy.Ah, maybe we're on the right track here.

Let's see if we can find some drivers to fit those devices.

Next, we'll need to know either:

1) The make and model number of the computer (if it's a pre-built system like HP, Dell, etc.)

-OR-

2) The make and model of the motherboard (if it's a custom built system)

Human Interface Devices (also called HIDs) are exactly what they say they are. Devices that allow the user to interact with a computer (keyboard, mouse, etc.). These are normal, especially if you don't have specific drivers installed for an HID device. For example, my Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 just shows up as "USB Human Interface Device" and "HID-compliant consumer control device" because I haven't been bothered to install Microsoft's Intellipoint software.

As long as those HID devices are working correctly (it will say "This device is working properly.") then I wouldn't worry about them. The puter is from Evesham AX1183000432-KIT
Serial No. WO01105987

Motherboard MISI Micro Star MS-7025
There do not apear to be a spare soc. header.
Hope this helps Mopy. For USB device not showing under My Computer, try the following link:

http://helpdesk.centre.edu/view.php?type=doc&id=56

Or if you prefer unintelligable geek speak:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297694This did not help It only lists Drive 0 my hard drive and one of my optical drives.
Thanks any way Mopy.
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloadindex

Go here and try to use MSI's Live Update Online feature.Installed all but no change.
Mopy.A similiar issue in the following thread was resolved by refreshing the USB driver stack from within "Safe Mode":
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic341615.html

Specific instructions for this are here:
http://www.usbman.com/Troubleshooter%20General.htm

The above link was within subsection " Cleanup the Device Manager / Windows Safe Mode" from a general guide for troubleshooting USB issues:
http://www.usbman.com/Guides/Cleanup%20Device%20Manager%20Safe%20Mode.htmGave this a go but no joy.
I Thought this was going to be a simple thing to put right but it was not to be, The fault causes little problem as I can run my SD card with A reader in the USB.
Thanks every one for your input but the thread stops here.
Thanks Mopy.Merry Christmas to all.
I just thought I would let you know that I have fixed the problem by switching the usb header for the front usb socket.
Now every thing is working just fine don't know why this should be?.
But I'm happy.
Thanks MopyThank you for posting back

Solve : Duelling laptop monitor and TV?

Answer»

Hardware: IBM thinkpad T-series
Some 8-year old thorn tv with multiple AV inputs, scart, phono, s-video

Ok here's my problem. I'm trying to duel my tv with my laptop monitor. I've got the relevent drivers for the video card, connected the s-video from the laptop to the TV properly, I even tried connecting it to an s-video to scart adapter. So, checked the display properties and settings, went to select the second monitor but it KEEPS showing up as default monitor but NOT generic television. I've tried uninstalling the drivers, reinstalling the monitor/the television, both at once, but COME *censored* or high water we just can't get it to show up as a generic television in the display settings.

This has worked a million times on other laptops and computers but what am I overlooking this time? Windows cannot detect exactly what sort of device you plug into an S-Video cable, it can detect that there is something there.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Just a dual display? If so, plugging your TV into your S-Video should do just that... also, there should be a key on your laptops keyboard that toggles your video modes, its usually the FN key + F8, but SOMETIMES varies. Consult your users manual.

Solve : Need help pasting JPG in MS Word?

Answer»

Apologies in advance for the dumb question.

I'm trying to paste a JPG image from Paint Shop Pro into an MS Word document. When I click "Paste Special" in Word and select any of the OPTIONS, my computer seems to jam TEMPORARILY, and then nothing is pasted on the page.

Any ideas why this is happening, and how to paste?

Thanks very muchWhat happens if you right click in Word and select Paste? Same thing? Try saving the jpeg locally and then in word, "import" itI looked through the Word menus and didn't see an "import" option. Can you tell me where to find it?That would Insert, not import. On the Insert menu, select Pictures, and proceed.

Have you tried the suggestion in my previous POST yet?I tried your previous suggestion, but it didn't work.

Inserting a picture does it.

Thanks! Right Click On the Image and open in EDIT mode. Select all and copy. Open word document and pest it. RESIZE it as required.

Solve : Advice !!!?

Answer»

hi
can anyone please help me?

when i turn on my computer, it won't BOOT. I have to restart it all the time, it can take the whole day long. but i've noticed something, everytime i hear a high squealing sound coming from my computer, it boots. then i log on and everything seems fine, then about 3-5 minutes later i hear the same sound agian. my computer either freezes or restarts. i did run a virus check but nothing came up.

can SOMEONE please help me?!

bfThe squealing sound may be a clue.

There are few moving components in a modern PC that can make a squealing noise. Sounds like it may be time to upgrade/replace the HD or the fan. I WOULD suggest finding out what brand of HD is in there, then going to that manufacturers website and obtaining and running some of their own diagnostic software (usually a free download). Also open up the case and clean the fan. Like all motors, it attracts dust. Sooner or later enough dust bunnies can build up to CAUSE the machine to kill the fan or heat up. A hot PC will not run right. The HD uses little rubber bands (no not really, but close enough for the analogy) similar to a cars fanbelt to control how the drive spins. You can't access them and to my knowledge no one offers repair kits anymore (back in the days of Commodore and Atari there were do it yourself repair kits, but those companies died off during the computer wars). The only solution is to replace the drive itself. Try REBOOTING the machine with the cover off and listen for the squeal. You should be able to see then which of the two it is (could also be the floppy or CD drives if those exist on your machine). Remember to obtain and use back up software capable of transferring your system first if your HD will be replaced.
Thank you for your advise. it will come to good use.

Solve : Can't boot after hal.dll error?

Answer»

When my son PUT a disk in yesterday the computer just kept churning on it. Ctrl-Alt-Del did not solve the problem so I shut it down with the power BUTTON. When I started it back up I got a message saying that the \system32\hal.dll file was either missing or corrupt. After research online I tried a few things to fix the problem to no avail (tried to reboot, tried to boot with system disk and repair the file etc.) Now I'm to the point that I cannot even boot the computer with the XP boot disk. I am not even given the option. When I try to open the BIOS to tell the computer to boot from the disk the computer locks up with an array error.

I've had someone suggest that it could be the power supply, which I have checked with a multimeter and that appears to be fine. Another suggestion was that it could be the CD ROM controller which is integrated into the motherboard. Can this be the problem??? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, this problem is with my kids computer which is not hooked up to the internet, nor have we installed or changed any programs lately. You might want to read this (if you haven't ALREADY):
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htmThanks. I'll try to copy the file from a GOOD machine and see what happens.First thing i would do is dis-connect the offending drive and see if it will boot properly.
If not BORROW a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there...

I've been tearing my hair out trying to solve this one. You can start IE from a DOS command easily using START http://www... etc

BUT

if you pass parameters such as

START http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=848358&o=all&op=1&view=all&subj=10193807237&aid=-1&id=530366140&oid=10193807237#pid=848358&id=530366140

using the ampersand -- it discards the param values and pretends you want to run some kind of command. I've tried the usual superstitious advice people offer -- such as using quotes, single quotes, doube quotes, passing all the parameters as one quoted string, preceding each & with a %..

and so on.

Big reward to whoever solves this one!Normally the parser uses space as a delimiter. With no embedded space and unescaped characters that have meaning in batch files, the parser PROBABLY cannot make sense of the string.

You might try this:

Code: [Select]@echo off
"c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe" "http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=848358&o=all&op=1&view=all&subj=10193807237&aid=-1&id=530366140&oid=10193807237#pid=848358&id=530366140"

I couldn't fully test this. Facebook kept redirecting me to the login screen.

PS. Sorry for the horizontal scroll. but there are only two lines in the code snippet.hey good one, i'll try it right now! rang ms support for the first time ever, and they said their server was down and couldn't log calls.

"oh.. how often does this HAPPEN?"

(heavy indian accent) "sir, it has never happened before."

D'oh!!you are a GENIUS! it worked perfectly!!!

where do I send the million quid to??!That really was pretty slick, thanks for that. Is there any kind of parameter I can give to DOS so that control returns to the DOS.exe I launch the batch file from, instead of waiting for them to finish with the explorer window? which may not be for the rest of the day?Quote

I've tried the usual superstitious advice people offer

From superstitious to slick. No too bad for a mornings work.

Code: [Select]@echo off
start "" "c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe" "http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=848358&o=all&op=1&view=all&subj=10193807237&aid=-1&id=530366140&oid=10193807237#pid=848358&id=530366140"

How much is a quid worth in USD?hmm, about 1.9 something dollars but it's less and less as the day goes on!one other thing, they have a login screen on the website i'm trying to automate -- any idea how i can get the batch file to shove the login and password in there as it goes through into the explorer?

this project is bringing awkward new problems every time i get one thing solved..You can't with batch code. You've crossed over the line into WINDOWS Scripting.

Code: [Select]Set objIE = CreateObject("InternetExplorer.Application")
objIE.Navigate "http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=848358&o=all&op=1&view=all&subj=10193807237&aid=-1&id=530366140&oid=10193807237"

Do
WScript.Sleep 250
Loop Until Not objIE.Busy

objIE.Visible = True
Set theForm = objIE.Document.Forms(0)
With theForm
.email.Value = "[emailprotected]"
.pass.Value = "password"
.submit
End With

Change the email address and password. Save the script with a vbs extension. Run from the command prompt as cscript scriptname.vbs

PS. Please give all the information in your first REQUEST. It saves having these threads turn into marathons.

PSS. Every website is different. The code snippet is specific to facebook. That is very helpful, thanks. The reason I didn't mention those problems at first is because before, when the user was logged in, the new instances of ie took advantage of that. In this usage, they don't! So, new problem, and thanks for the answer.

This scripting seems very useful -- can you suggest any good books or webites which will help me develop it further? for example, to pull in XML as it's fed back from a site, that sort of thing?

Very grateful for this support!
A good site for learning script is The Scripting Guys

Check out the links on the page. It offers everything for beginners to experts including free downloads and the ever popular Scriptomatic.

You can also search for a help file on your system: script56.chm It's more of a reference than a primer but can be helpful for syntax.

Good luck.

Solve : what kind of video file is this??

Answer»

i have 2 movies in my pc and both of them have a common in their file names.this is......

Code: [Select]DvD.ScREENeR and when i play it...it always display this message.

Code: [Select]the file is not compatible with your media player. to VIEW this high quality format use the recommended Media Player.

Please visit www.TorrentMovieSupport.com to download the Media Player.
what is this?? this is the first time i encountered this warning. is there anyone knows this PROBLEM?? any advice would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

i think DVD SCREENER isnt the file extention as i cant seem to find any thing about it in a search engine a DVD SCREENER seems to be an unrelased movie pirated and put on the net i think that DVD SCREENER IS PART OF THE FILE NAME not the file type

go to the file right click on it select properties and tell us wht i says the file type is

bartrob
Dvd.screener is not a file extension. It is as bartrob says a definition movie pirates use to indicate the movie isn't from a true retail DVD source.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirated_movie_release_types

But you appear to have downloaded a spyware scam.
A real video file would NEVER GIVE you an error message urging you to download software like the error message you got.
This is what you get for trying to download pirated movies.oh, i see... that's why this warning message always display everytime i will watch that movie. therefore, this problem cannot be resolve?
Nope. I don't believe you've downloaded a movie at all.Nope. I don't believe you've downloaded a movie at all.

what do you mean?Quote from: Deerpark on January 26, 2008, 07:48:02 AM

i got it.. YEAH you're right. Just to claryfy little bit more.
You already know from Deerpark's link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirated_movie_release_types what "screener" is.
In most cases, movies like this are playable. They may display some copyright warning screen at the beginning, or they may display a watermark throughout a movie.
Often Windows Media Player won't play movie like this one, because of copyright issues. That's why, you're getting this:
Quote
the file is not compatible with your media player
3rd party players, usually will play it, but if you're getting something like:
Quote
Please visit Code: [Select]www.TorrentMovieSupport.com to download the Media Player.
the file is suspicious, and should be left alone.i am wondering why this message appear in my player. but now i really understand it. thank you so much for your help guys. i really appreciated it. it helps me a lot.

Oh, I would say you need to check your computer for viruses and adware after such files! Most probably the file had .exe extension that you didn't see, because extensions are hidden on your system.

Solve : Keep returning to Windows XP Safe Mode?

Answer»

This is my first time posting a message..so do bear with me..
Great site with a lot of informational help!!
My Dell Laptop Inspiron 6000 keeps going into Windows XP Safe Mode every time it is rebooted. This issue started two days ago. I even tried to go back to restore point to a month ago but it still goes back into Safe mode.
Clicking "start windows normally" does not work because it comes back into safe mode.
I checked all the Q & A and documents in this site but none of the solutions help address my situation. I also tried scf /scannow but nothing happens.
So I can't seem to get out of the Windows XP Safe Mode.

Any help is greatly appreciated as this is laptop is my main access to work. Do you have Windows XP CD?Unfortunately I don't have a Windows XP CD. I got the Laptop from Dell.I believe, on Dells, you can access Recovery Partition by pressing F10 key at startup. Thanks! I will try your suggestion. What do I do after I get into the Recovery Partition? You should have repair option (R)Okay. I will try that and get back to you on the outcome. Thanks. Here is the outcome:

I tried F10 upon restarting, nothing happened and it still went into the Safe Mode screen. I did observe that
after the restart, there is a "loading PBR 2...done" that appears (very very quickly), and it is after that that I am REDIRECTED to the Safe Mode screen.

I apologize if I was not clear earlier but the safe mode screen that I was referring to is a black background screen with some verbiage about why I am redirected to this screen and asked to select the options below within 30 secs:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Working Configuration
Start Windows Normally

I did observe that upon selecting Safe Mode with Networking, an entire list of file paths appear:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\filenames

Thanks again.During the POST, the following message should appear:
= Utility Mode

Maybe with older Dells it's a different key. Just watch the screen when your COMPUTER starts.
I only see "F2=Setup" and "F12=Boot Menu" appear. F10 is not displayed as an option. In that case, most likely, Recovery Partition wasn't installed on your computer.
They should have provided you with Recovery CD. No CDs at all?Dell provided 2 CDs to REINSTALL Sonic my DVD, RecordNow 7.3 and Cyberlink PowerDVD software.

Dell provided a leaflet stating "your new computer does not require an operating system CD or drivers CD. Instead, if you ever need to reinstall your software, use one of the following methods:
a)Microsoft Windows System Restore
b)Dell PC Restore to get the laptop back to its original state by clicking the Owner's Manual icon"

Tried the Microsoft option but it did not solve my problem. And I think the Dell PC Restore wipes out all my previous documents and uploaded software. Pls let me know if otherwise.

Do I have any other options to get bak to normal mode without wiping out all my documents?

Quote

the Dell PC Restore wipes out all my previous documents and uploaded software
Yes, it will. You can always backup your documents from Safe Mode.
I see no other option, but you may want to wait for others second opinion. Thanks for dedicating your time in trying to help me solve my problem. I will await others' opinion before I try using the Dell PC Restore option.
Would there be any adverse effect if I were to keep staying on Safe Mode for a LONG time until this issue is solved?Quote

Restart computer, and post back, when you're at A:\> prompt. While I have been waiting for you to answer, I have been reading on the Microsoft website troubleshooting, I put both the CD and the floppy in and ran scanreg/restore and it worked!!!!!! I restarted the computer and I do believe it is ok! Thank you so very much for your patience and help!Wow! Great news Make sure to create restore Point.I did create a restore point and I have restarted the computer twice now. Tomorrow we will figure out how to lock it so it cannot go into Safe Mode again. Again, thank you so much, I will come back here if I ever have another problem.Quote

Solve : Computer Problem....?

Answer»

Ok so bascially my computer was overheating so i decided to clean it out. I took off the cover and then took out the fan+heatsink. I cleanned it off and put it back. Now when i turn to the computer I can hear the Computer booting up but nothing HAPPENS. At FIRST i thought the moniter was just not plugged in but it is fine i have tried multiple Moniters and nothing. I also noticed that if it was a problem with the moniter i still would be able to hold the power button for 5 seconds or WHATEVER to turn it off like i normally can. But it wont turn off i cant turn it off anymore WITHOUT unpluging it from the power source or flipping the switch in the back but nothing will show on the moniter. So im guessing its a problem with the computer itself. Maybe somthing i did when i took out the fan or maybe somthing simple. Please Help.... THXClik This...I would go back inside the computer and make sure you have not disturbed a cable or card connection. If you removed the heat sink from the CPUI I would make sure the CPU is properly seated and the lock mechinism is properly INSTALLED, If the machine was functioning prior to you working on it I would believe somthing got disturbed. Be extremely careful with the CPU seating. It is very easy to bend the pins on. Look everything over very careful.

Solve : Peristent viruses/spyware in a rookie's computer?

Answer»

It is wonderful to have a FORUM LIKE this and I am hoping someone out there will be willing to help. First of all, I am not computer savvy, so I will not know most of the acronyms people generally use..please bear with me.

A few days ago I got infected with vundo and a metajuan Trojan viruses. I have downloaded and used the following: CCleaner, Spybot, Superantispyware and the Norton I have INSTALLED. I did the scans under safe mode, and many problems were detected and cleaned.

However, when I try to operate my computer in normal mode, every time I try to use Explorer and I am switching sites, new windows will pop up. Clearly there is some spyware causing trouble because the sites come out randomly. I do not want to end up having to wipe out my hard drive and reinstalling every single program I have. So I turn to this forum for some help. I have read varous postings and it SEEMS to me there are SERIOUS people here who can help. I have Windows XP, the programs I mentioned, and the basic Microsoft firewall. Once again, I use computers as a wonderfull tool, but they are mystifying to me. Any help will be appreciated.Hi hipocampo34, welcome to the CH forums.
Since your computer still is infected I suggest you go through the steps here and then post the requested logs in Computer Viruses and Spyware.

Solve : How can I delete Windows xp pro from my computer??

Answer»

Hi,

My previous Windows xp os had a problem so I DECIDED to reinstall a fresh copy. The fresh copy is WORKING FINE but now during bootup I have to SELECT which os I want to use - there are now two copies of windows xp in my computer. How do I delete the older version?Sounds like you installed Windows on a new partition. Are any of your documents available on your new Windows install?
Do you want to keep any of the documents & files from your original windows install?

The way to fix this is by using software like Partition Magic. However, you risk deleting all your data if you use this incorrectly. Please post your boot.ini file, it's best to get that set up to boot to the good OS only before deleting anything.I don't need any of the documents and folders from my previous copy, I already have backups of everything so it'll be ok if i just remove it completely. Is there a simple method of removing it rather than using PartitionMagic? Reinstall XP but this time format the drive. This will give you a clean install none of the old stuff left behind.

Copy the contents.

The suggestion posted by Spoiler would work, but it would take a lot more time and is most likely completely unnecessary.I ended up formatting the drive & reinstalling a new copy of windows. It took a very long time but at LEAST it solved the problemIt probably wasn't necessary, but I'm glad to hear you're back up and running.I just went through a similar thing. I was trying to completely start over and it installed in addition to the original XP. I couldn't figure out how to get it to just format the disc, so I bought new hard drives! It then automatically formatted the C drive but not the secondary D drive. Now my computer calls my cd rom the D drive and doesn't see the second hard drive!
I just posted today, at the top

Solve : Win XP PRO Backup HELP?

Answer»

I am using win xp pro and the Primary Drive I am using is 80 GB and I want to replace it with a bigger one.

Now I have a lot of Graphic Programs and Animation Programs and Video and Audio Programs installed and all of there settings are just right.

Can I use win xp pro backup to make a backup of my whole hard drive and then burn the file to my Black CD or DVD?

Then when I have winxp installed on the new hard drive just IMPORT the file back??

will this work or is there a diferant WAY I should be doing this?
I don't want to buy a Backup program just to do something I chould do with a program that win xp has.
Please he RobertYou could use a program like Norton Ghost (or similar), then use something like Partition Magic to resize the partition on the new harddrive to it's FULL capacity. (Ghost will create another 80-gig partition on the new drive.)Or you can hook up the new drive as a slave...use the diagnostics from the "new" HDD manuf. site and "clone" your drive to the new one...
Then power down...dis-connect your old drive completely and set up the new drive as master. When you power up everything should be there... no partitioning is needed. Then after checking things out MAKING sure all is good you can then hook up the old drive as a slave ...format it and use it for storage.

Solve : Windows XP can't find my hard drive?

Answer»

I am building an ASUS S62E laptop for a friend who WANTS Windows XP installed on it. The laptop is equipped with: Intel T7500, 2GB RAM 667 and a WD 80GB SATA hard drive. After running WD LIFEGUARD tool to partition and format the hard drive for Windows XP, I attempted to install XP. Windows, however stops every time and exits the install because it can't locate a hard drive. The MESSAGE comes up saying that I should check the CONNECTIONS or install the hard drive's software to format the drive, which I did several times. The bios recognizes all 80GB of the WD hard drive, and I even installed PCBSD OS with no problems. However, my friend wants XP on the drive. I reformatted the drive with WD Lifeguard, and Windows still can't find the hard drive. What can I try?You need SATA drivers, probably.Yep you will need SATA (sometimes also called RAID) CONTROLLER drivers.
Check the ASUS driver page for the laptop and see if they don't provide SATA drivers for XP.
You will also need a floppy drive to install the driver. So if the laptop doesn't has one installed (it most likely hasn't) you will need an USB floppy drive.
Here is a nifty little guide that explains the whole thing. (Ignore the fact it's from Toshiba, the procedure is the same on all computers.)

A while ago I had TROUBLE with windows not booting. I went into bootcfg and rebuilt the boot ini which fixed my problem. But, that wasn't the first thing I tried, and being inexperienced, I played around in there before rebuilding it. I ended up with a boot menu that has just my one windows install. Which command do I use to REMOVE this menu? I have searched the internet and all I seem to find is how to create menus, but not how to remove them. Quote from: -JQ_

I ended up with a boot menu that has just my one windows install. Which command do I use to remove this menu?

I'm confused - do you want to delete the Boot.ini file?

No, I just don't want a menu for selecting multiple operating systems. I am only using one operating system, so I have this pointless menu to select which operating system to boot. Also, my usb keyboard doesn't function until windows is up, I'm assuming because I have an older motherboard, so I have to wait the 30 seconds for the menu to time out unless I want to hook my old keyboard up just to select the only os on the menu.A USB keyboard won't load til the OS finishes loading...
As to the other query...copy and paste your bootini file so we can see exactly what you're talking about.Go to the Control Panel - System - Advanced - Starup and see what can be done Run msconfig. Select the BOOT.INI tab, and change Timeout to 0. Click Apply, then OK. Thanks for the REPLIES guys.

Patio,

Ya I figured the keyboard wouldn't work until the usb drivers loaded, but I thought maybe newer motherboards would have usb drivers in the bios or something. It sucks that you have to hook up a ps2 keyboard every time you want to go into bios SETTINGS.

Soybean,

It wouldn't let me go lower than THREE seconds, it would have been less annoying but not exactly a fix.

Adario,

In the control panel systems advanced tab under settings there is an option to edit the startup options file manually. I went in and deleted the second instance of windows that was causing there to be a menu, thanks.

If you Google this error, it brings hundreds of hits, with all kind of possibilities.
Most common culprit, though, seems to be faulty RAM.
You may start here: http://www.memtest86.com/ to test your RAM.
Click on "Technical Info" for instructions. Also, your using XP with 128MB of RAM?
Now, this wont necessarily cause this specific issue, however, it will cause XP to run like... junk.

Did the problem start immediately at the install of XP? Did you try reformatting again? Navigate To C:\Windows\Minidump
Zip some of the recent minidumps and attach them here

Solve : DSL ceases to work unless I take receiver off the phone?

Answer»

About the same time in the evenings, my DSL quits working. This will happen 3 or 4 days in a row, then not happen again for months. When it does happen, I can take the receiver off the phone and the DSL will start working as long as the receiver is off the phone. I have been shuffled thu the AT&T SUPPORT tool, the AT&T chat tech, the tech in the Phillipines and finally another AT&T source which hung up in the middle of me answering the phone. I have decided they have no answer so I am searching.

Windows XP Home Edition Service PACK 2
8 kilobyte primary memory cache
2260 MHZ
512 Kilobyte Memory cache
80.02 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
67.36 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space
2.27 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4

Are filters on phone jacks installed? My Modem and all filters were supplied by AT&T and installed by a computer technician.I'd ask ISP to come to your place to check lines. Not sure that AT&T would do that without charging an arm and a leg. And I have no faith in AT&T technicians. They would most likely tell me that they would have to come while I was having the problem and that is unpredictable. I can do the internet, using my method of taking the phone receiver off the phone but I don't like being without the phone. In most CASES, because you pay for your service, they are required to come.
Tell them, you're quitting. They'll show up next day. Oh, they will come alright. Just like Dish satellite. But always a service charge.Do you know any neighbors who are also using AT&T DSL? If you do, ask them whether they've ever had this problem.

Is your computer connected directly to the modem via cable?

What things, if anything, did AT&T tech support have you try to resolve this? You need to have filters installed on EVERY jack in the house whether they are being used or not....Quote

Hmm, I have one unused jack in my place that has no filter on it. Doesn't seem to cause any problem. I have filters on every phone jack. If it were the filters, would it happen at approximately the same time of an evening and at no other time?

My modem is connected directly with my computer using the connection supplied by AT&T

There are no close neighbors. I am pretty isolated. I will check with people in our town because we can only get AT&T service at this time. Our phone lines were Southwestern Bell for local and AT&T took them over. A monopoly for sure. Threats don't bother them much. They are the only phone company in town.I had the same problem a few years ago where I used to live. I went thru the same stuff you did with the same results

One day, after multiple calls to AT&T the problem stopped. I didn't do anything on my end so it HAD to be on theirs. I don't know what they did but afterwards I never had that problem. It IS them.

Alan <>< I THANK you very much. You are the first person with this problem that has answered me. And I do appreciate all the answers. It just seems like such a weird happening. Glad and relieved to know it is not me, modem, computer or filters. Thanks everyone!!!

Solve : Need Help Computer wiped itself?

Answer»

Hi my laptop recently wiped itself clean SORTA. I was installing a game. didnt have enough room so i uninstalled another game i dont play. After uninstalling the game the computer did something and when i log into my account there is nothing on it. like a brand new computer. theres no word or ne thing just accesories, y computer, and recycle bin. how to find my files again? can i get them back? i dont have recovery disk. You didn't give us much info to WORK with so I will assume your operating system is Windows XP. If this is not the case, disregard the rest of this post and let us know what OS you're USING. Check My Computer -> C:\Documents and Settings\. Poke around in there and see if you can find any documents. ALSO, how did you come to the conclusion that "theres no word or ne thing"? Have you looked at Add/Remove Programs? Computers don't simply wipe themselves clean...post alot more info on the machine, OS and what exactly you did to get to this point.Check "Documents and Settings", all available usernames. If this doesn't help, try running Advanced NTFS Recovery to see if you can recover the DELETED files:
