Solve : setting up new hard drives?

Answer»

Hello everybody. My first time here.
I have an HP pavilion dv8130 laptop. It USES 2 hard drives. I recently installed 2 new ones and used my Windows XP Pro disc to format and install. My machine is now up and running, and it took quite a bit of time to get this far. Now, in "my computer" I only see the "C" disc and the dvd/cd rom is labelled "D".
I assume I still need to format the second hard drive, but I'm anxious about losing what I have set up on "C".
My question is:
1. Do I have to rename the cd rom to "E" first? And how?
2. Will the Windows disc automatically go to the second hhd disc?
JimA new drive needs to be formatted before Windows will recognise it...
After this is done you can assign any drive letter you want to each corresponging drive.
You neglected to mention how these extra drives are connected as it is a laptop...I'm not sure I understand. The hard drives are inside! lol
The C is the main one. The D is for storage and I always had to access it from "my computer".
The new ones are:
Western Digital GB/GO EIDE model wd1200vertl

During the install, it automatically formatted the C drive but obviously not the secondary or D drive.

JimOK, I got impatient waiting for more help and tried to set up my secondary drive on my own. I should have waited!
I put in the windows xp pro cd and it went into set up MODE. At the end I expected to get a choice of which drive to set up but ONLY THE C DRIVE was listed, so I hit ESC and popped the disc out. The computer restarted and now during the boot up it asks me which operating system to start.
1. Windows XP or
2. Windows set up
I don't understand how to get it to format ONLY the secondary drive. And now, how to get the start up back to normal.
??
Jim

HP pavilion dv 8130
win xp pro
Avg free,Spybot S&D,Adaware 2007
2 new hard drives. the secondary is raw.this is not to difficult to do

go to start
go to my computer and right click on it
select manage

in the next screen double click on storage
then double click on disk management

here you will see your two drives present as "0" and "1"

right click on the one not showing in the top screen and select format

restart you computer and voila you will have two drive with there respective drive letters showing

bartrob
thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou

That worked like a charm. It's formatting the D drive right now.
Now about what I did to the C drive. As stated above, when I start my computer, it asks which operating system to start. It gives me a choice of:
1. Windows XP
2. Windows set up.

I previously had put in the Windows cd (after the C drive was up and running Windows) to attempt to format the D drive.
It apparently began set up on the C drive and it still wants to finish!
How do I get rid of that? Do I have to format C again and reinstall Windows again?
JimNo that isn't necessary.
We will need to have a look at and later edit your boot.ini file.
So here is what you do:
Right click My Computer and select Properties.
Select the Advanced tab and press the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery frame.
Click the Edit button.
Now notepad should open and display some text.
Copy all this text and paste it into a reply here. Do not edit the boot.ini at this point. Merely close it after you've copied the text. If it asks you to save any changes select no.[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup"

OK here it is.
Note, every bit of this is a learning PROCESS for me and I greatly appreciate what you all are doing here.
JimOkay now we're ready to to edit the boot.ini file.
Open boot.ini as you did before.
Delete all the text in it and replace it with the text I've written in the box below:
Code: [Select][boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer
Close notepad and save the changes.
Reboot and cross your fingers. The boot menu should now be gone.

EDIT: Don't know if you've already made the change to the boot.ini, but notice I've just updated what you should put in your boot.ini file a bit. I added the "/usepmtimer" switch because this was present in your original boot.ini file and your system might need it for optimal performance.
If you've already changed boot.ini open it again and add /usepmtimer like shown above. If you haven't done anything yet just disregard this and go ahead. OK I deleted and then copy/pasted and saved the change.
I'm crossing my fingers!
Here goes
Deerpark,
You're the best!
Kudos to everyone here. My machine now boots up like it should!

OK just one more thing!
There are pictures and stuff on my old "D" hard drive. I would like to get back. I think I remember seeing a holder you can put a laptop hard drive in and use as an external drive. There was a JUMPER on two of the pins, but I used it on the new slave.
Can I rig that up and get those files back, and will it still need that jumper?
JimYou can get an external USB HDD caddy for laptop hard drives and hook it up that way.
Or you can get a 2.5" to IDE connector for about 10 bucks and hook it up to a desktop and copy/burn your data to CD/DVD and do it that way...

Solve : Windows ME Problem(Help?!)?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that was previously running XP, but we sent it to some people for REPAIR and they half installed Windows ME. (Most files are missing) ME WONT detect CDs, or PLAY sounds, or let me connect to the internet.
I need to uninstall ME so I can run the recovery disc for my laptop, but without the ME installation disc or files. How can I do this?An update, I did....something and tried the disk again. After awhile a message CAME up saying:
"Windows cannot find 'ERRORDIALOG.EXE'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
Whats this mean?I would be returning the machine to the repair FACILITY demanding satisfaction and letting them know you have an attorney...Well we could do that.....are you sure theres nothing we can do to fix it?

Solve : Is there any magic formula to remove several favorites at once??

Answer»

I am using XP Home Edition. It is tiresome to delete old favorites one at a TIME. Is there any way to delete like 3 or 4 at one time?If they are CONSECUTIVE ones, CLICK on first, hold SHIFT, click on last one. RELEASE SHIFT. Hit Delete key.
If they're random, click on first, hold CTRL, and keep clicking on each one to be removed. When done, release CTRL, and hit Delete key. I am sorry but this does not work for me. Anytime I click on an item in favorites, regardless if Shift or CTRL is held, that page is selected and appears. You can use a neat little app called AMDeadLink...removes broken/old url's...
NOTE: Be patient it takes awhile to run as it checks each one for connectivity. You can open the folder and delete the links you don't want.

C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name\Favorites

This only shows some of my favorites, not all. I do believe I must do it one at a time.

run chkdsk off of a boot disk and you'll be in good shape.

Quote

this is what my screen says when it decides to shutdown as requested
Does this mean that the error only occurs when you intentionally shut down the system?

Just prior to this problem starting had you installed any new hardware or software?

Is your version of XP fully updated?

This problem is TYPICALLY caused by a corrupt driver so if you've installed any hardware drivers RECENTLY you might have to reinstall the drivers.

Here is some guidance from the Mother Ship.

Solve : Multiple outlook express files?

Answer»

Hi All
Dell Dimension E521 win xp Prof. IE6 and outlook express Ver 6.

Been having a BIT of bother recently after downloading a program from the states despite having the mighty protection of McFee ,Firewalls and whatever.Ended up restoring and all well except OE had empty folders although the address book was intact.
I searched and found I had two other OE folders showing each with its own subfolders CONTAINING sent and deleted files etc. (I think they were files with DBX extensions)

When I tried to import them to the current OE an error message said something like you cannot import from this program as files already in use.

How can i gather together all the old files and collate them into the "new" OE.

Tks Create two new folders that don't have the same names currently being used by OE. MOVE all of the files from the old folders to their new ONES. Export or Import the new folders into Outlook Express.

Solve : Clone Hard Drive HELP?

Answer»

I am going to put in a new SATA Hard Drive but I don't want to have to install everything again and then FIX every setting in every program again.

So I was going to try to Clone my master hard drive onto a Secondary hard drive and then when that is doen just put the Secondary hard drive in the Primarys place.

I now this would work but I have Win XP PRO and I did not want to buy a program just for this. Can I use win xp pro to Clone my Hard Drive??
I know win xp has FAST Program I can use but I don't think that will clone.

Thanks
To clone a drive you will need a 3rd party tool. Windows doesn't come with a clone tool built into it.

They do have many vendors out there that can do this but you will have to buy the program. Unless someone knows of a free one I would look at Partition Manager. Its around 40.00 and works great.

http://www.partition-manager.com/?gclid=CMD71rW0q5ECFQwZgQodH1inYg

Win XP has 2. programs Backup and File Tranfer Wizerd.

Can ether of these be used to copy my Primary hard drive to my Secondary. So I can then use my secondary as my primary.

I don't want to install everything again and when I read about these 2. programs they say you can backup a whole hard drive but I did not know if this would work?

Thanks againThe hard drive manufacturer will PROBABLY have free disk setup and cloning program on its site. Don't know about others but the programs supplied free by SEAGATE perform brilliantly.

Good luck.hello there

this sight will help you with your cloning and it has a couple of downloads there that will do the job for free as well
Link Edit
bartrobHook up the new drive as a slave.
Use the software that ships with the new HDD as Dusty suggested.
Clone the OLD drive to the new drive.
Remove the old drive and hook up the new one as master.

Done.

You can then format the old drive and hook it up as a slave and use it for storage.

Solve : Reboot loop when updating to XP Prof, is there any hope????

Answer»

Help!!!

I was on the phone yesterday with MICROSOFT for two hours trying to update my computer from Windows 2000 Prof to XP Prof. All went well until it went to boot into XP and it's looping. It reboots, flashes XP and then reboots, flashes XP and gets nowhere.

Microsoft got me to the error section which were: 0x00000050 and page_fault_in_nonpaged_area. Apparently one had to do with an antivirus program that needed to be turned off and the other was the display driver.

Is there any way to update the display driver while it's rebooting in a loop??? And am I searching for an updated driver for the BIOS or the video card or both?

I appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks. You can attempt it from safemode although this may not interrupt the loop.
From a cold start power up and start tapping F8 as soon as you start it and before you see the Windows logo.
Once in safemode you can install/remove drivers.Patio,

Thanks for your reply......the Microsoft fellow put me in safemode.....it's still looping. He sent me an email telling me how I might uninstall XP but I have to get to a command prompt and I don't know how to do that? But on reading another Microsoft support page I'm not sure I can take XP off of Win 2000 Prof? We thought of replacing the motherboard, or taking out the harddrive, wipe it clean and reinstalling WIN 2000 Prof (I have the CD). I have checked the drivers for the motherboard and they all seem to be compatible with Win 2000 and XP. So when my computer was working fine in Win 2000 and all we did was update, why WOULD it not work for XP??

How much info do you need from this drive ? ?
The safest method is to remove the drive and hook it up as a slave in a known working system and copy/burn the data you need...
The 2nd thing to consider is that this may be a hardware issue.
Remove a side panel and double-check all connections to make sure they are snug.
Also look at all fans/heatsinks as well and make sure the fans are all operative and the heatsinks are not clogged with gunk.
A can of compressed air works well cleaning out the gunk.
Use a QTip to hold the fan blades in place while blasting them to PREVENT damage...
After doing the above i would run the HDD diagnostics on that hard drive available from the drive manuf. site before replacing it in the offending machine.
You could also run chkdsk /r in case it's a Windows issue.
When your data is SAFELY backed up let us know how you want to proceed.
If you do want XP on there it may involve wiping the drive; re-installing Win2k and starting over.
Let us know.

BTW Welcome Aboard. And on your next post provide as much info on the machine in question as well....Patio,

Again, thanks for your answer, thought you and others would be interested in what happened. I had a friend check out my computer and the first thing he noticed was that I had a Iomega zip drive attached. He detached it and XP loaded just fine. Only problem is that on booting up now I have two XP's listed, the PARTIAL one and the full and complete one. Now I'm having problems with software and another call to Microsoft today.... They tell me the only way to get rid of the partial, looping XP is to reformat the drive, reload Windows 2000 Prof and then reinstall the upgrade XP Prof. So I guess in the long run it will be for the best, wipe the slate clean and start over. Yep. That method will produce the cleanest results...
Thanx for stopping back and giving us an update...

Solve : Is it possible to move a program from one drive to another??

Answer»

I just put new hard drives in my laptop and installed windows xp pro. If I get an enclosure for the old drive, so it can be USED externally, can I move programs such as AUTOCAD to the new drives?
JimYou can find programs out there that will move your applications settings/preferences over to the new hard drive, but you will have to manually install each application using the disks/downloads they came from.

I could be wrong but I'm not aware of any applications that will move your applications over from one pc to another, due to legal reasons.

Your other option, though, would be to use the old hard drive as an external, like you said, and just run those applications off of that drive. The applications will load slower, but it would work.Quote from: socrates on February 06, 2008, 09:48:50 AM

He would still need to reinstall those applications. Otherwise, Windows won't know, in it's registry, where the program files are located. That's right. I apologize.

I made the switch to mac at home and have been using only a mac for my personal computing at home, and have only been using windows when helping people fix technical issues.

Got the two CONFUSED... on Macs you can drag applications back and forth and even run them from another drive without registry worries (no registry to worry about) Thanks up front for your input, but now it seems it's a moot point.
I bought an enclosure to connect my old drives in and it sees the old slave drive as a completely blank drive.(without the jumper)It won't do anything when I put the jumper on.
It sees the old main drive as unallocated.
Jim
If it is a USB enclosure here's what you can TRY:
Unhook it.
Boot the machine a few times and power down.
Set the jumper on the drive in the enclosure to master.Don't connect it yet.
Power up the machine and let it finish running all the startup apps. Connect the USB external and listen for the dong.
After that right clik My Computer and select Manage...then Disk Management. See how the external is reported there under Properties and report back.

Solve : Reformat?

Answer»

I an effort to having my computer on a clean slate, I tend to reformat my PC every 6-8 months. I have done this process a multitude of times without any problems, but this time I am running into a problem with Windows XP. I have reformatted and get the same results each time SINCE the problem has started.

I have two hardrives in my PC, and just bought a new one awhile ago, I took out my old IDE slave drive, moved my former IDE slave drive up to master and my newly bought SATA II drive to my slave. Things went great on my first install of XP this summer. Well new year and a clean slate was what I was going for.

I format my drive completely, not the quick NTFS formatting. Things load up nicely I load up my nForce drivers for stability purposes (never had any TROUBLE, but just to be sure), an anti-virus software and my wireless card drivers to connect to the internet. I then begin the process of updating Windows through Windows Update and since my copy of Windows XP is a launch copy, it is pretty bare and I need the works including SP2.

I get through one set of updates and do a restart, things are going great. I get to installing SP2 and then restart my computer and everything breaks down. Everytime I restart my computer after SP2 after going through the BIOS screen, my computer sits at a BLACK screen for about 3-5 MINUTES. It then finally gets to a point where the screen is all black with a white progress bar at the bottom of the screen that goes the length of my screen (its not the XP splash screen with the green progress bar). For the progress bar to complete, it takes anywhere between 10-20 minutes before I finally get to the XP splash screen, where the process runs at a normal speed and XP works fine.

I mentioned my hardware just in case this is a hardware issue, which it may be, but something tells me that it may be a software issue also. You've mentioned 3 drives...which one did you install to ? ?I removed my former master drive because it finally gave up on me. I had a slave in at the same time. I took this slave and MADE it my master drive and went out and bought a SATA drive as my new slave. So my current setup is:

160GB Master IDE
500GB Slave SATA II

I have unplugged my slave when I did the last attempt at a reformat, so only my 160GB is in currently and I am still getting the same results. Because it is a 160GB HD on a launch XP disc, I am only able to format 137GB as the XP install does not recognize anything above that.

The thing that makes me think it is not a HD issue is that the computer is perfectly fine up until the SP2 update, and from there is when I get the insane loading times, but the playing field is still open to my master being faulty.Well the SATA is probably faster than the IDE drive.
You could try removing the IDE and installing to the SATA.
Early on in the install you will see a prompt for RAID/SATA drivers to hit F6.
At that point have the MBoard driver CD handy or DLoad and make a SATA driver floppy from their site if you have a floppy drive. Continue with the XP install and then install SP2 and all other updates after installing your protection applications.

I think you'll find the system a little faster with the install on the SATA drive even if the IDE doesn't have issues...
After that you can format the IDE's and use them for storage if they pass the diagnostics from their respective manuf. site...the downloads are free and will tell you how healthy each drive is.

Solve : I Want to Clear My Entire Computer and Start from scratch. How do i do it??

Answer»

Im sick of running into sh*t I dont know and wondering if its important, how it got there and what not. I want to get rid of everything on my computer, reinstall everything, then go from there. What things should I do before I do this, and how is the best way to go about GETTING rid of everything and then reinstalling everything back on? And what about pros vs. cons of clearing the system? You need a windows CD to do that. Pros are, you correct all software-related errors and the little piles of crap from everything you installed and then uninstalled is gone. Cons are that you lose everything on the computer. Before you do this, it might be worth it to clean the computer up, eg virus/malware scans, defragment, etc. Also, backup any files you want to keep - probably anything that's in MYDOCUMENTS that you want. To really do the job right, if you have a large external hard drive you could backup your entire hard drive. Solve : CD Rom and DVD Not Displayed in Device Manager?

Answer»

Yesterday, I uninstalled Roxio Easy Media Creator as it was causing some issues.. The UNINSTALL went smoothly but since I wanted to do a clean reinstall , I needed to clean out the registry, I deleted all the ENTIRES suggested by Roxio support.

It was after doing this that I noticed that my CD Rom and DVD were no longer working, they were no longer displayed in Device Manager, apparently one of the Reg entires that I deleted should not have been deleted..

The CD Rom and DVD both show in 'my computer' .. and I can see files.. but any APP that uses the CD or DVD cannot detect they are there..

I have tried virtually every fix I've come across, deleting the upper and LOWER buffers.. removing both IDE controllers and then reinstalling them, driver upgrades.. etc.. Spent about an hour on the phone with MS support today.. and in the end the only thing they suggested was a repair install..

Today I even added an external USB DVD burner and device manager cannot find it either.. though it also shows up in my computer...

If I install, the windows DVD, it will auto run.. in any of the drives.. but if I put a music CD into any of the drives the associated APP will launch but then ERROR

I'm running win XP SP2 home edition..
system restore is off..

I really don't want to do a repair install if I don't have to..

any ideas that I have not tried??System Restore ? ?
And post what Roxio suggested you change in the registry...there may be an error there.

Solve : missing or corrupt file?

hi all, i am new here.
i am looking for some help.
i just updated my computer yesterday, it's windows xp.
i have windows live one care and webroot spysweeper. wich just installed a new version also.
i have the automatic updates.
i usually leave the computer on, well, overnight I don't know what happened.
i get this message

Windowa could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\system32\hal.dll.

now i can't even get into safe mode.
it keeps coming up to a blue screen that says,
it has shut down to save it from damage.

i am pulling my hair out!!!
if anyone could help i would appreciate it sooo much.
toni

(hp pavilion a1340n)
the hard drive on it went this past summer, i had it under warranty, so i got the drive replace in july.i went to the hp support SITE,
i printed out pages of what to do.
for some reason the thing won't recognize my recovery disks.
i have tried over and over to reboot the *censored* thing.
this comes up after:

non-system disk or disk error

press any key to continue

-
Have a look at these two sites here and here..

Good LUCK

i have tried several times, i don't know if my recovery disks were messed up when i got them back from the tech guys after they had installed my new hard drive.

(sorry about the glare)

Do you have 2 CD/DVD drives in that system ? ?
If so try booting with the CD in each of them...
If not in your 2nd last screenshot use the down arrow to highlight the 2nd drive...then hit Page Up to move it to the top of the list ...then hit F10 to "save changes and exit " answer Y and hit Enter.
The machine will automatically re-BOOT.yes, it does have 2,
and i have tried to load in both of them,
for some reason it is not recognizing the disk.
thank you for the reply,
toni

just cause it couldn't hurt to try,
i did the page up thing you said,
but it would not move that one to the top, page up did nothing,
thanks thoughi thought maybe the tech guys put disk 1 in the wrong case,
so i put the other one in,
i tried it in the middle drive,
and it went to the screen to choose recovory or windows media,
i chose the recovory
it acted like it was going to work,
then it just went back to the blue screen. i contacted circuit city,
someone there said it sounded like a corrupt partition?
that i will need to buy new software from hp,
and install windows again, he said my recovery disk must be corrupt.

As long as you are posting pictures, post a picture of the two recovery CDs you have. You need to make sure you are trying the one with the OS on it, and not the applications/drivers.

There is also a shortcut to this, if you can FIND ANY Windows XP cd that you can boot from you can press R and enter the Recovery Console. From there type fixmbr then type fixboot then type bootcfg /repair. After that reboot and see if the system comes back up.Quote from: vettelady on February 04, 2008, 07:29:42 PM

i got the disk's from hp (xp)
i went to install them, and got the same response:

non-system disk or disk error

press any key to continue

thankfully, i was on the phone with the cityassure people at the time,
he told me to try a couple of things.
none of them worked.

so now i have a tech guy coming out sometime in the next week to hopefully replace my hard drive

this will be the third hard drive in 2 years.
is it just my bad luck?

No.
Hard drive quality has diminished rapidly in the last 6 years or so...
Back awhile you could expect a hard drive in a well maintained clean machine to last 5 to 8 years...
Today i am thankful if i get 3 years out of them.

Back to the Golden Rule,,,always back up. And if you're unsure...back up again.

Solve : WinXP---download SP2 without getting viruses?

Answer»

Hi,

being a Linux convert, it's been several years since I've fumbled around with Windows and needed to deal with its many kooky issues like virus protection. Now I suddenly find myself installing WinXP, and my efforts have led to an apparent conundrum:

To install SP2, one needs to either ORDER the CD via snail mail OR CONNECT to the Internet and perform an automatic update. Snail mail is too slow, so I'm forced to choose the latter. But since I don't have a firewall and the Norton virus zapper doesn't seem to install without SP2 present, I'm worried that I'll get plagued with random attacks and viruses as soon as the machine connects to the Internet.

Is my fear unfounded? Thanks for reading

Turn Windows firewall on, and install AVG free: http://free.grisoft.com/

Thanks for the reply. If I'm not mistaken, the firewall isn't part of WinXP sans SP2. So I have to install SP2 first, since the firewall is part of SP2. It would seem that I need to install something like Outpost before updating to SP2.

Or is SP2 available as an .EXE? If so, I could download it from another machine and burn it to CD. POSSIBLE?Quote from: peergynt on January 26, 2008, 12:07:22 PM

Yes, you can do that. Get it >here<.

HI, I just want to update this thread. The network installation .exe of SP2 worked perfectly, despite the text which directs users to "visit Automatic Update." The problem with Automatic Update is that you must be connected to the Internet, since it installs SP2 on-the-fly. Of course that didn't fit my requirements as DESCRIBED above.

So, thanks for posting the link. I saw it during my initial searches, but kept letting myself get directed away from the network installation. Glad you pointed me back to it!

Solve : No response during certain tasks.?

Answer»

Hello.

During some tasks I do, Windows will CEASE to respond until the task is completed. Sometimes I have to reset my computer's power because the task is stuck. The Numlock LED still functions, I can move the mouse and I can access the task manager my hitting ctrl+alt+del. I'm not able to click anything however, so I can't take any advantages of the task manager, nor can I control it through my keyboard.

An example when this happened was when I was updating adaware. I could not tab out to any other PROGRAMS during the update and I could not click anything before the update was complete - when it was back to normal. This is extremely frustrating since programs tend to GET stuck sooner or later. It's as if there's some always on top setting on everything.

Sorry if this has been asked and SOLVED previously. I could not find any decent search results. See my signature for computer specs. Thanks for any HELP!Run diskclean...

Solve : Downgrading from xp pro??

Answer»

Hi Peeps,

I had my old PC upgraded from Windows ME to XP PRO. Question is, is it possible to unistall XP and downgrade to an OLDER OS?

What would I have to do?You can't uninstall XP. In order to go BACK to ME you would have to reinstall it from a ME installation disc / restore disc. This would involve wiping the partition with windows on it clean, so you would need to backup any data you'd LIKE to KEEP.Any particular reason for downgrade?Alas I don't have a ME installation CD, PC didn't come with one, only have recovery CD and software Cd's (MS Works etc).

Is it possible to install the original ME OS even though I don't have the installation CD, after all the PC did cost around £900 about 6yrs ago (we're ripped off in the UK).
Any particular reason for downgrade?

XP I had put on a while back wasn't a legit one, not used it since and would like it all legal again, plus I would like a little experience in unistalling/installing an OS.

Fair enough....Recovery CD should do...Fair enough....Recovery CD should do...

Don't think the recovery disc can or is for reinstalling ME OS, but anyway...

Will formatting the harddrive allow me to install a new operating system or is there more to it than that?

I've read a bit about it, but in all honesty it just blows my mind, still want to give it a go though as I'm not actually using the old PC.

Looking for guidance. If your hard drive was formatted using NTFS, you'll need to boot from bootdisk (floppy): www.bootdisk.com, use fdisk to remove partition, create new partition, and format it as FAT32. Then you can boot from Recovery CD to install ME.if you have osme kind of installation disk, you can just pop it into the drive and install. But you lose all your data. So backup.

You'll just erase your harddrive completely and install. And yes, FAT32 is what your drive will be in.Harddrive was formatted using NTFS and the XP Pro that I had installed was a full program and not just an upgrade. I expect that makes all the difference when it comes down to reinstalling the original ME.

I was looking through the discs that came with my old PC and found that I'd made an ME "start-up disk" when i first bought the PC, is that of any use, taking into account what I've explained above.

Would I be better of just installing a new harddrive?

Will more than likely get someone else to do it, although I would like to do it myself, it does seems to be a bit complicated.
I'm one of those people who need to be shown how to do something as opposed reading instructions . Still appreciate your help, keep it coming.Self-made ME startup disk, most likely doesn't have fdisk command on it.
New hard drive is another option. It does...if you have an installation disk just pop it in and it'll do it's job.

That shouldn't be a problem. I had installed linux once in my lifetime and it didn't matter that i had formatted the drive to NTFS earlier. I simply wiped the drive and installed.

Now that should be same with win ME and win XP.

Quote

It does...
Thank you. I hope, you're correct, this time....LOL

Solve : windows won't start, repair reinstall won't work?

Answer»

When I turn on my computer, I get the following message:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have CAUSED this.

If your computer stopped RESPONDING, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to PROTECT your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent SETTINGS that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows
Normally..."

When I start normally or with last known configuration, it goes to the Windows XP loading screen (black screen that just says Windows XP and has a bar for loading) and stays there forever. When I start in safe mode, the screen shows some writing about partitioning files for a while and then just stops and stays at this screen forever.

I have seen people on various forums with whose computers give them the same message, though the results of their choosing safe mode or normal are different (but also unsuccessful in starting the computer). The advice given to them was to repair reinstall Windows XP.

So I tried that, I booted from the Windows XP CD and I chose repair reinstall. The bottom of the screen said a few things, then said examining startup environment and remained there forever.

Was it the right choice for me to repair reinstall Windows XP? If it was, what can I do about my current problem? Before you started to get this message what were you doing? Did you have a power outage? Or load any new software?

Try to run the COMMAND console and than chkdsk /R

This may take a long time to finish.

You might also try SFC /scannow from the recovery console. That might help. And while you're at it you can run fixboot.
If after doing the chkdsk, the SFC /scannow and the fixboot your system still doesn't boot you should download this http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ burn it to CD, boot from it and run the diagnostics.

Solve : Boot Problem XP PRO 250GB?

Answer»

Hey this is my first post to this site so please feel free to nag more info out of me if i dont put enough on
My XP Pro recently got a 250 gb Seagate internal hard drive installed into it, yet it TAKES around 10 to 15 minutes for it to boot.
So i decided in the end to have it as a secondary hard drive and have my 80 gb hard drive as a primary. yet when my 250 gb reaches over 91.9 gb full, it will not load anymore data, instead crash and say that i have lost all data that i was moving.
If anyone knows whats wrong or even advice, it will be well appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
How is the drive formatted ? ?
NTFS/FAT32 ?

2 things you can check: First in device manager find the IDE controller and then the drive andd right clik it and select Properties...Report BACK what mode it is in. If it's PIO mode this will account for the extreme slowness.
2nd DLoad and run Seatools diagnostics on that drive to determine if it's healthy or not.
The file is used to create a bootable floppy/CD so you can run it even if Windows won't run.

Report back with your findings...The drive is formatted in NTFS.
I am not too sure about PIO, it didn't say anything that i could see in the properties about it being PIO so i assume it isn't.
And i did a short drive disk check and it passed, yet STILL making my life *censored*!!!, will do a long drive SELF TEST after i have finished writing this post.
Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...double click IDE/ATA adaptors to expand it.
Right click Primary and select Properties...click on the 2nd tab on top. It should read UDMA or DMA mode if available.

blah blah blah filename.pdf blah blah. And if I click on filename.pdf within the word document it will open up the pdf. I know how to do this as a simple hyperlink, but then i can only open the pdf on my computer. I need to email this word document and have other people be able to click on it and open the pdf too. any IDEAS on how this works?I don't think that is possible. PDF is a proprietary format that Word can't even open so I don't really SEE it doing anything else with a PDF file. And honestly in my mind it would be a huge security risk if Word could open some arbitrary file simply by OPENING a word document. But then again Microsoft have had their share of huge security mistakes so maybe you can do it.
But if it was me I would simply attach both of the files to the email and be done with it.

something very strange is happening with my laptop, the usb ports are not detecting neither my pendrives nor the printer cable, any help??At this point we know absolutely NOTHING about your COMPUTER or problem, besides the fact that is something to do (perhaps) with usb. This makes it impossible to TROUBLESHOOT your issue.
So please start here and post back in this thread with as much information as possible about the computer and problem. LIKE when did the problem start, did you do or notice ANYTHING around that time, etc.
