What happens when you turn the computer on?This message sometimes comes up, if refreshing rate has changed. What is it set to, now?try to REBOOT on safe mode and change your display setting to LOWER resolution eg. 800x600 then you can change it again later. or try to reset the default value of your monitor by pressing the conbination key as stated in the manual of your monitor.

Solve : Windows xp turns off?

Answer»

Hi, this is my first post here.
My computer is having problems. I just returned to it this afternoon to watch something on youtube and the fan started to go crazy. It crashed and I had to turn it off ; thinking that it was OVERHEATED, i left it for a while and then took off the case for the first time to remove all the fluff from everywhere. Now when i turn it on it goes to the windows starting screen with the loading bar then restarts. safe mode doesnt work and i obviously can't get to system restore because windows wont load up. (it did this when i restarted it before i took the case off). im not so SURE about my specs other than i have windows XP home edition, 512 ram and it is fujitsu siemens
Please HELP me or give me suggestions of what to do.
IT HAS MY COURSEWORK AND IT WONT GIVE IT BACK! First of all, this is a good example of why you should always backup everything you want to keep.

That being said, when you try booting into safe mode, where does it freeze? You should see a list of files and then if it doesn't work (reboots), it should freeze at a specific file. tell us what that is and we can help to try and diagnose the issue.ok well i put in the windows disc and opened the repair menu, i had no idea what to do so i took it out once i had finished and it just worked..... all the usb ports stopped missing but eventually it all worked. Thanks for yhe help anywayI'm glad it worked, even though you aren't clear at all on what you did to RESOLVE it (putting in the disk and CHOOSING repair mode doesn't do anything unless you actually type a command in the repair console)

Solve : Unable to open any .exe files in Windows XP?

Answer»

Forgive me if I'm posting this in the WRONG place, not sure where it should go!

I have a desktop with Windows XP SP2 installed. I am currently unable to open any .exe files (at least all those I've tried). Some programs (e.g. ms word) will open through an existing document. Internet explorer seems to be working fine. I had Norton AV and Firewall installed but the subscription lapsed a week ago and i hadn't got round to renewing (yes I know, but I don't use the desktop very often, so just forgot to do it). I have done a scan through Symantec online and it hasn't picked up any VIRUSES. I've tried to download spybot and adaware to check for spyware but can't get them to work because of the fact they use exe files to start up. I've done some web searches to see if anyone else has had the same PROBLEM and found a fix by DOUG Knox to restore the .exe file extension in XP but I can't open the registry because it says I'm not an administrator (even though I am).

Can someone help me?? I am not that computer literate so help in slightly less techy language would be grand.

Rachel I may get yelled at yet again, but http://www.techemperor.com/2008/01/26/cant-get-to-the-control-panel-task-manager-or-registry-editor/ this link will tell you how to re-enable your registry editting. Then you can use the fix for re-enabling your exe files. Then I suggest you go through the malware removal PROCESS outlined by the stickies in the Malware removal form here.

Solve : raid technology vs server clustering.?

Answer»

which one is better using raid techology or server clustering.? on database server APPLICATION..

thanks and more power.

They both are....

You NEED to understand them and what your database is going to be doing to make a choice. For example...does your database need most of its time getting data for APPLICATIONS? Or is most of its time going to be written to it. What are your data safey needs? Do you have to make tape backups? And what happens if you have a drive go bad?

Only you can ANSWER these types of questions and than the raid or clustering answer will be clear.

Solve : how to check....?

Answer»

how to check am i using 32bit or 64bit?
what is 32 and 64bit?Check the following registry key(by opening regedit at command prompt)

"HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment\PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE"

If the value of PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE is "x86" then you have a 32 bit version of Windows

if the value of PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE is not "x86" then your machine is potentially a 64-Bit.

There are other methods for doing what you want.

For example CCleaner can be setup to do this and it's Freehow if the user careful?can anyone teach me?Quote from: anonymous on January 13, 2008, 09:12:52 AM

because i want to scheduled that the computer always empty recycle bin after i shutdown, empty all temporaty files and other thing that can speed up my computer every time i boot in.
Before you even START CHANGING the registry you will need a program or batch script that deletes the files you want to delete. The registry can't delete files for you. When you have this program you can schedule it to run at boot up or shutdown by adding it to the startup folder or create a shutdown folder. (Actually no registry editing is needed.)

I would still recommend you give CCleaner a try though. It is a LOT safer and easier.
can i hide certain of windows application like disk cleanup, accesories using regedit or gpedit? What do you mean by "hide them"?same like hide folder, file. or can i disable disk cleanup? No don't THINK so, why would you want to do that anyway?i just want to check wat is other people surfing...when i try to check back they alrdy clean the temporary files....is there other method that i can see what other people surf before?Whose machine is this and what are you looking for ? ?

None of your other posts stated this was your objective...are you just asking random questions ? ?

Solve : Browser Causing Restarts/Disk Checking?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2, 1.2GHz Celeron, 512MB RAM, 9250 Saphire (I think) 250MB video card. I have to run chkdsk every time I turn my computer on, REGARDLESS of how it was TURNED off. Also, recently, about 50% of the time I try to open Opera, my computer restarts. I don't know if this can happen with Firefox, but it hasn't yet, despite a few attempts.

I remember disk checking saying there was a problem with cross-linking or something like that. I'm putting a new computer together this WEEK, but my dad will still be using this one, so I want to kix the major problems with it since I kind of screwed it up originally. Any idea what's wrong?Download the ultimate boot CDhttp://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ burn it, boot from it, run the hard drive diagnostic. Sounds like you might have a failing drive.I'd be cautious recommending UBCD to just anyone...there are quite a few dangerous tools on there. So long as they don't go delving randomly through it and running things they should be fine. The hard drive diagnostics is the second option on the first screen as I recall, so it shouldn't be too hard for people to find and run.I agree.
However this is why it may be best to steer them to the HDD manuf. site for the tools.

A few years back on another Help Forum a few people caused irreversible consequences just moving around in UBCD.

That's why i try to make sure the user has a good understanding of diagnostics tools and command line syntax before i'll suggest it.

Not being critical here...just cautious. So are there any safer ALTERNATIVES? I remember seeing something during disk checking that looked like hexadecimal. Could there be a problem in the registry I could fix with a little GUIDANCE? I'm still learning so that might not make any sense, but I'd rather avoid such a risky fix.Find out who makes your HDD and travel to their site and DLoad their diagnostics...they're Free and are used to create a boot CD/floppy to test the drive.

Solve : my bros. new computer he got for 50 bucks.?

it's a dell, intel celeron processor. 534MHz, 192MB of RAM.

it's running very slow and wants to know what to do to speed it up? did he get a good deal? it has XP with SP2.
any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.XP is going to run slow on a 500 MHz processor with only ~200 MB of RAM.
But a reinstall of XP will probably help a bit. You should always format and reinstall when you buy a computer from someone. You never know what they might have installed.

Actually the XP license on the machine is worth more than the actual computer. So if he got the license and install disc for XP along with the computer he made a pretty good deal.

Solve : AAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!! What happened to my visual styles??????

Answer»

Hello all

A few months ago I RAN System File Checker because I kept getting "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and NEEDS to close". Well that problem is fixed. But when I rebooted I got the Windows Classic theme. I went into Display Properties, clicked on the Display tab, but the visual style I use (Royale Remixed Theme, not signed by Micro$oft) is no longer there!! I'm guessing that SFC had replaced my patched UXTHEME.DLL file, however, SFC didn't ask for the Windows CD-ROM. So how the heck do I fix this problem without running the UXTHEME.DLL patcher again? I've got enough PROBLEMS on this computer without replacing the files in my Windows folder.

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

Thank you for your time SFC overwrites missing or corrupted system files only...
So this would MEAN whatever patch/theme you were using uses one of those files and hence was overwritten by the process.
You will have to start over with the theme.OK. Thanks patio. You got it...

Solve : REFORMATTING = NO INTERNET...........WHY??

Answer»

I had windows XP media center EDITION and I just reformatted my computer and INSTALLED regular XP now I can't get on the internet, why is that? Can you be more specific? What kind of computer do you have? What kind of internet? Do you have a router?

My first guess would be that you're missing your network adapter drivers. Can you go to Device Manager (Rightclick "My Computer" > "Properties" > go to the "Hardware" tab > Click "Device Manager") and tell us if there is anything with a YELLOW exclamation mark (!) by it.The HP Media Center m7070n, DSL, no router just a modem connected to my computer. Anything elseIs there any software which you got from your service provider? If so, have you installed that YET? ALSO, have you checked for all driver updates available?Go into Device Manager and look for any Yellow Question/Exclamation Marks. You have to install the drivers from the cd you got when you buy the computer.
Do you see Local Area Connection? If not, then drivers are not installed for your network card.

Solve : MS Outlook - won't send/receive emails?

Answer»

I have a 6 month old Dell Computer - XP Home - 300 GB (half still available) - 2 MB RAM - Everything else is currently behaving itself except MS Outlook.

I have MS Office - 2002, with the latest Windows update. I have PCcillin Virus and Firewall; CCleaner & VP16 registry cleaner. Have done defrag.

MS Outlook was working fine, then one day it quit sending and receiving emails. I can still open/close existing emails. MY ISP techs are really good (in my opinion) and they say it isn't anything connected to my modem or router, etc. I have fiber optic service (love it).

I have uninstalled MS Office, then ran both CCleaner and JV16 to clean the registry, etc., then reinstalled MS Office with the hope that that would work. Nothing was changed.

So, I started using Outlook Express. I really want the MS Outlook to work, though. I now have thousands of emails in each program.

1) What might be wrong with MS Outlook?

2) Is there a way to combine the emails from both softwares?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Did you're ISP guys walk you through checking your POP3 and SMTP settings in your Outlook account ? ?Thanks for replying!

Yes, I've gone over the email account settings several times with them. Today I opened the account settings in both MS Outlook and Outlook Express and compared them carefully - spelling, etc.

My main email account is an Earthlink.net and I also have 5 emails with my local ISP. The settings for all are identical in both MS Outlook and Outlook Express.

Here are the error messages I get in MS Outlook: (please keep in mind that it worked great for years before 'whatever' happened.)

0x800CCC15
0x80004005
0x80048002
0x8004210A

I called my ISP again today (they are going to start charging me if I keep calling with the same problem). He said one of these errors is connected to Norton.

I haven't used Norton for years.

I checked my programs in "add/remove programs" for Norton or SYMANTEC, and also used JV16 and CCleaner to check for these. I can find no trace of them in my computer.

I tried looking the error messages up in Google but am in "over my head" by trying to do that.

Hopefully you can come up with some good ideas for me! Many thanks for your help! When was the last time you cleaned out the IN/Outboxes and compressed the folders in Outlook ? ?
Not sure if this will help but it can't hurt the situation...Thanks --

I do have thousands of emails that I keep for business reasons. I also have over 4,000 messages in Outlook that are from a yucky X-rated company spamming with my domain names, and the undelivered mail comes back through my autoresponder. I keep these with the hope of mutilating these guys someday. (I also have over 6,000 of these returns in my Outlook Express.
(I'll start a separate post for help with this.)

I do compact the files regularly in Outlook Express.
I haven't ever done it in MS Outlook.

I'll look up how to do it and do it right now.

Thanks for the idea!(Just wrote a long reply and got timed out, so will start again) (Smiles)

I went to File - Data File Management - Settings - Compact Now.

I tried the 'compact' -- it only took 2 seconds so I evidently have done that before.

From the 'Settings' - 'Open Folder' screen I could see that the file is
1,412,624 KB in size.

From the 'Settings' - 'Help" I found this: "Allow UPGRADE to large tables" -- "Allows a new folder to be created that can hold more than 16,383 items."
I guess it is possible I have that many items -- counting both in box and sent box.

I didn't know there was a restriction on the number of items.

I can't see how to get another folder set up. Any help on this?

I'll go in and delete a bunch and see if that will help.

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks! It's so much easier to do this knowing I'm not alone!
I deleted bunches of old emails. Still can't send or receive emails.

How do I set up this new folder that will hold another 16,383 items?

Thanks!Me again - feeling exhausted with this whole problem! Still no success of any kind. I've been trying to set up a new folder.pst to start holding all email from here on but haven't succeeded yet.

I did find on Microsoft.com/office/community -- a forum type thing -- that the maximum size of the 'Folder' in MS Outlook is 1.6 GB.

What does my 1,412,624 KB equal in GB? 1.4GB??

'Till tomorrow . . . .

1.34718322753906 GBThanks for the GB translation figure.

I'm still trying to get MS Outlook to work. Still running into hours of frustration and have so little time to keep trying.

I'll try to be specific with some questions:

I'm currently trying to archive off several of the folders within the In Box. Haven't succeeded yet. Question: (1) Once I do archive them off into a file of their own, can I still access them? (2) Will that reduce the size of my main Personal Folder? Or is the archived file tucked into my current Personal Folder?

(3) From what I can determine from the Windows Help forum, MS Outlook gets corrupted when it reaches too many emails (16,383) or 1.6 GB. Once I get some of the emails archived into a separate file, will the corruption go AWAY so I can use Outlook again? (4) I'm currently using Outlook 2002 - educational version. If I install Outlook 2007 - not an upgrade, but full version -- will the corruption still be there? (5) Will it automatically give me access to my existing items since I'm not upgrading?

(6) Once MS Outlook works again, can I somehow combine the items from MS Outlook and Outlook Express?

Many thanks for any help!

Solve : address book moving from laptop to PC?

Answer»

Hello: I want to move my address book from my LAPTOP to my PC. I WENT to program files, outlook express, address book, and copied the address book and WROTE it onto a memory card. When I try to "import" it into my PC outlook express, it looks for a FILE with a .wab extension, and that ONE doesn't show up from the card, even though we can read it from the card. Also, I tried copying it onto the desktop then importing it from there, but again my outlook express doesn't recognize it. I checked the versions of my outlook express on both computers and they are exactly the same 6.0.2900.2180. I use an XP system.

What can I do to transfer my address book? Thanks!

Dr. D.You need to export the file from OE.Hi Drd,

The way I normally do it is this. To save the file:

File > Export > Address Book > Text File (Comma Separated Values)

- then choose the filename and folder to save it to. Give it either a *.CSV or *.TXT filename; it doesn't matter. To import the file:

File > Import > Other Address Book > Text File (Comma Separated Values)

Game shot.Bless you all. It worked!

Thanks a million!

Solve : Computer clock slow even after replacing CMOS battery?

Answer»

My computer clock was doing fine while the computer was on, but losing hours every time I turned it off.

So, I replaced the CMOS battery (standard, CR2032).

Now the clock is slow even when the computer is turned on! This is irregular. In ONE session, it got slower and slower, to the point that it was hardly changing at all. I have no idea what the problem is, so I'm trying the Windows forum.

I have Windows XP, HP Pavilion, Zone Alarm and Threatfire security.

Any suggestions? From what I can guess, it looks like your bios clock is dying (or perhaps dead already). You could try turning on "time SYNCHRONIZATION" in Windows to compensate, however I don't know of any other solutions other than REPLACING the motherboard, or getting a new computer.I would try a new battery...some of them have been sitting on the shelf for awhile depending on where you got it.Thanks to you both, but, interestingly, the problem seems to have gone away on its own. My clock is now, again, keeping good time while the computer is turned off and has gone back to working normally while it is turned on.

I don't think I have a bad bios or motherboard -- remember, the problem started with the clock failing only while the computer was turned *off*. To me that says "battery" rather clearly.

I suspect that while the battery was dying or being replaced, some system function or timed activity (update, virus check....WHATEVER) got out of synch with the given time. It had to get past all the bad times and reset the time to a correct one for the system to "catch up". Just a guess, but makes sense. At one point Zone Alarm insisted on doing a complete check for updates, even THOUGH it had just done so. It was confused by the time changes.

Does that make sense to you?

In MSPaint, click the large 'A' in the toolbar (as you WOULD normally do) and then drag the box anywhere in the paint screen.
Now go to View --> Text Toolbar, and make sure it is Checked. And in the case where your trying to edit EXISTING text in a bitmap...

Not happening...

Solve : Music Distorts And Skips When Playing Games?

Answer»

Hi, I recently purchased a ASUS P5B-VM SE motherboard and a new processor from Intel for a better gaming performance. But, I like to listen to music when I'm playing games. I've noticed, though, when I have any music program open in the background and my game lags or I'm on a loading screen (the game is World of Warcraft, by the way, if that matters) the sound will distort and skip and be very terrible. This did not happen with my old motherboard and processor. I've tried updating my sound drivers, nothing. Can anyone help?Processor RAM and HDD info please...Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7200 @ 2.53GHz (2 CPUs)

2 gigs of ram

Thats what it says on DxDiag anyway...

HDD: Where do I find this? The HDD info can be found in Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...
But it LOOKS as you should have enough horsepower initially to do this.
How old is the DVD drive ?
How many other APPS are running in the system tray when this happens ? ?

P.S. What music program ? ?The DVD drive is about 1 or 2 years old. All that's running in the system tray is spybot.

Any program acts this way, WINAMP, Windows Media Player, and iTunes are what Ive tried.Do you have TeaTimer activated in Spybot ? ?
If so turn it off, re-boot and try it now.Did not fix the problem, unfortunately. =\

It's slightly less distorted now, but still distorted.Turn Spybot off all the way...
Also check for any programs that may be doing AUTOMATIC updates...printers; XP; A/V programs etc.

there is no on of switch on the back of the power supply. i got another power supply dynex 400 it has a switch but the power supply doesn't WORK i don't think so. i dont know what to do. i dont really understand all this im sorry. First of all...you should answer patio's question on what prompted you to change the PSU in the first place. There had to be an issue with the computer prior to you replacing the PSU...correct? What was that problem?

Also...did you check to see if the "cheap" power supply you just bought is going to fit your computer...or if it has the same (or better) rating as your current power supply?

Is this a custom build...or is it a brand name computer?I'll never understand why PEOPLE scrimp on PSU's.....

Solve : windows root\system32\hal.dll?

Ok getting there, I still have the yellow ? next to Network Contollers... I think I've just about dowloaded everything recommended too. Does this Network Controllers effect my wireless connection? YES YES!!!! all sorted now, up and running.. Thanks again Now another PROBLEM, I cant dowload Skype or MSN.. says its not a valid win32 application? any ideas what I'm missing now I've sorted this now thanks to this really HELPFUL site! I read through some posts and dowloaded firefox! ahhh big sigh of relief! SusieQ23 - Sounds like you've got your laptop back up and running. GREAT JOB!

We'll be here if you need us. Best of luck!Well, that was short lived. My lap top was up and running ok then it just turned itself, and a black screen with hardrive failure appeared and said to press F1, I pressed F1 and I am back to where I started ....windows root\system32\hal.dll Susie - Sorry that the drive failed (but, see Reply #1) - a failed hard drive in a laptop is not unusual; nor are they hard to replace, generally

1) Replacement drives are here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380%2050001306%201035907889&name=ATA-6. I picked the Western Digital drives because I've had good luck with WD, but it probably makes little difference which manufacturer you pick. I cannot tell from the online material what type of hard drive you have - SATA or PATA (IDE or ATA). I suspect that you want the latter and the Newegg link only shows ATA drives. But, verify this with Dell. You, of course, can get a hard drive from Dell or any number of places; I included the Newegg link to give you an idea as to what the capacities and prices are. One further consideration - drive speed (rpm). Your current drive, I suspect, is either a 4200 rpm drive or a 5400 rpm drive. I would recommend a 5400 rpm drive or a 7200 rpm drive. The 7200 rpm drive would make your computer faster (by 10% or so) but will: a) reduce battery time, B) generate more heat.

2) Looks like it's easy to replace your drive : http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins8500/en/8500/index.htm#online_documentation. Look at the Hard Drive section.

3) After REPLACING the hard drive-> You get to re-install the operating system AND the drivers again!

Best of luck and post back with any questions.

Solve : Registry Key Deletion HELP?

Answer»

By accident I have deleted a registry key that allows me to use both my keyboard and my mouse. I can't restore because I can only boot my puter but can't do anything once it's booted. Is there a way I can restore all my registry information in MSDOS mode or something? Can anyone help?Quote from: mdestefano on September 28, 2008, 11:42:54 PM

My keyboard and my mouse are both not working. Both are plugged in via ps2 and are RECOGNIZED with lights and stuff. I screwed with the registry and deleted some upfiling (?) files to try and fix my ipod. Now nothing plugged in by usb or ps2 works. It recognizes it when I plug it in, but does nothing.
First, when you TURN the computer on, keep pressing F8.

Can you get into Safe Mode?Yes. I can get to the screen to choose safe mode. I can scroll through the options and select to boot in safe mode. Once it begins to boot, I can't select my name or ADMINISTRATOR as user because I have no use of the keyboard or the mouse. This might work, pull the mouse and keyboard out of the computer, then turn off the computer, then plug both back in and restart the pc, and it should reset them in the registry hopefully! How do you back up the Registry before making any changes to it ? ?
Just curious.

So far you have removed entries in Device Manager and MADE random changes to the registry....this will eventually take you down the path of a re-install of Windows at this rate.

Solve : Horizontal Black Line on Monitor?

Answer»

The computer monitor developed a horizontal white line across the entire screen, between the middle and lower third of the monitor. Nothing has been DONE to display configuration in the control panel. System Info FOLLOWS:

Microsoft XP Home Edition
Dimension 4600C
Pentium 4 CPU, 2.4 GHz
640 MB RAM
Radius 17" Monitor

Does ANYONE know how to remove the line.In your title, you say the line is black, but in the post underneath you say it is white. Good point. The line is black. This is an LCD monitor, right?

1. TRY the monitor on another computer. If the line is still there, the monitor is faulty and needs replacing.

2. Try another monitor on your computer. If that shows a line too, then you have a problem with the display hardware in your computer.

Solve : I've lost my DRM file?

Answer»

Well I am nowhere closer to getting Rhapsody to run than when I began. Broni, your patch helped though, installer is working fine now. I then installed "Tunebite" and it didn't make a difference. I also got in contact with the technician who installed XP for me. He said that he doesn't put a password in for the administrator when he sets up XP. So I don't know WHERE that leaves me.

The 2nd level technician at Rhapsody is recommending things I did weeks ago. So I will am stopping my post with this phenomenal forum and going to try through Rhapsody and the Real forum (thank-you to DRMsucks for that avenue) and if all else fails take it into the techie on Wednesday. I would re-install XP myself but that seems LIKE the final resort and the techie can do that since he will be getting paid. Posting here made me feel smarter. I've always felt like I had was out of the technological loop and this just proves I've got some reading to do. It's been awhile (say 14 years) since I was even in the know. When I find out what went wrong I will be sure to let you all know since it just may help someone else down the road.

Honored to have had all your help and input.

Hoping to make my kids and hubbie happy with FUNCTIONAL MP3 players,
AirHallingI'm glad, we fixed something.
Keep us posted.Best of luck, Airhalling.Tunebite is the paid program that allows you to REMOVE DRM from music protected by DRM. That's what it does. So by using tunebite to process the DRM music, you can put the music onto any device supporting only DRM free music.

I'm well aware of Tunebite's CAPABILITY and its core function. My hope was that by installing the program it would overwrite my systems DRM files and make things "healthy." Clearly I was wrong.

It appears even "RealNetworks TECHNICAL Support, Tier 2 Escalation Department" are unable to give me a resolution. Their response was: It clearly indicates that some of the registry files been corrupted in your computer and this is the reason, you are still prompted to enter the username and the password, even if you have signed into Adminstrator account. I am sure that Windows DRM will be available even if Rhapsody has not been installed. In this case, please contact the System Manufacturer to assist further.

Ah the sweet smell of pass the buck.

Well still nowhere near an answer as to how or why my DRM files are corrupt or gone.

Solve : Help installing XP?

Answer»

Okay im getting extremely fed up with this now.. this has to be the 4th time i've reformatted in the last 5 days.

Asus M2A-VM mobo
Western digital 500 GB sata hd (os installed on this one)
250 gb Western digital ide slave drive
plextor dvd writer
amd athalon x2 64
2 gb ram XMS2 corsair

okay so the first few times i reformatted i couldn't get the os to load without the xp cd that was cuz of the sata drivers not installed. I figured that out, made a boot floppy with the sata drivers did the f6 stuff before installing installed the drivers and everything was good.

however after a few days i got some worms and trojans on the computer most likely through the antivirus program i had on there, random pop ups would just appear, couldn't access the TASK manager, anytime i would install an antivirus program or spyware program it would install and just not load. I got fed up and reformatted the system but now is where the problem comes in this time when i reformatted i was installing my mobo drivers and when prompted to restart i get the message

NTLDR is missing
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart

tried the repair CONSOLE and i still keep getting the same message
it only works if i have the xp cd in the drive, won't boot any other way..

plz help im gettin extreeeemly frustrated with this now.. reformat again. Something apparently corrupted the drive.

Speaking of which- how old is the Hard Drive?

by motherboard drivers- do you MEAN the SATA controller drivers, or the motherboard drivers AFTER windows was installed?it sounds like the hard drive is slow dying....

How old is it???

Edit - BC _ programmer bet me to itthe hd is brand new

and i mean the mobo drivers after windows is installed..

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/597060-windows-only-boots-cd.html

i found this thread hopefully this HELPS, im gonna try the floppy boot and copy the bootini, ntdetect, and ntdlr files hopefully that works.. i really don't know what else to do.. Can you start recovery console from the CD?yes i can

Solve : Problems with old computer?

Answer»

I have an old win2k computer. Today when I turned it on, it booted normally until the screen with the blue background where a small window comes up which says "Windows is starting up..." right before it asks for user/pass but that window never came up. It just froze on the blank blue background for about 30 seconds and then rebooted by itself. Then it did the same thing again. The third time, it did a chkdsk, rebooted, and got stuck on the blank screen with the blue background not doing anything. If I restart it it just does the exact same thing again.

Asus P4B Motherboard
Pentium 4 1.5 GHz
256 MB RAM
40 GB Maxtor hard drive
Windows 2000 Professional
nVidia GeForce 2 MX

Any ideas?

EDIT: It just loaded up to the window that says "Windows is starting up" but rebooted again.

EDIT 2: "DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER." on the POST screen. Seems like the hard drive is dying...Run diagnostic tool: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287Is the computer supposed to boot off the floppy? It didn't, and I checked BIOS to make sure that the floppy drive is the first thing in the boot order, and I tried to load the floppy on a different computer but it didn't work there either. It has to be bootable floppy, not ANY floppy. How do I tell the difference? I never knew there were bootable and unbootable floppies...Bootdisk has to have necessary system files on it.
You can get any bootdisk from here: http://bootdisk.com/Ok I finally got around to running the diagnostics and it found 4 errors and fixed them, but the computer still does the same thing. When I try to boot in safe mode, I get to the user/password PROMPT but as soon as I press enter to log on the computer BSODs for a millisecond and REBOOTS. Win2k apparently doesn't have a "disable reboot on system failure" option on the screen where you choose safe mode/safe mode with networking/etc so I don't know what to do. I use this machine for testing, I'm THINKING I should install Ubuntu server on it and set up a small CS server...I wouldn't trust any hard drive, where errors were detected.Meh, I don't really care if the hard drive breaks, I'm not going to store anything on it that's important or anything.I understand, but it may explain your current problems.Alright so I gave up on that problem for a while. Today I looked at it again... It seems the RAM is failing, not the hard drive. Memtest86 starts reporting ENDLESS errors as soon as it starts. Anyone know where I might find PC133 RAM? I tried cleaning the contacts on the RAM and putting it into different slots...same thing happens. Quote from: Soviet GENIUS on September 27, 2008, 10:31:32 AM

Maybe try a few big box stores, any small PC repair outlets, etc.

Solve : After black "setup" screen another black screen comes on?

Answer»

Over the past week I've been fixing my mom's pc which was LOADED with viruses, trojans spyware etc. You name it she had it, I think. Thanks to evilfantasy it seems to be back to normal except for this one thing. He told me to ask you over here on this forum. I did a search as directed but couldn't FIND my exact problem:

When I load windows now, after the black "setup" screen another screen comes on asking me to select Windows XP Professional or Window XP Home edition. Pro is highlighted and there is a countdown timer that says something like "the highlighted ITEM will be selected in XX seconds or press enter". How can I bypass that? It's a minor inconvenience after what I just went through with the malware but if mom has to click something that might get her in trouble...I have a feeling she'll manage it

Thanks in advance.
JeaniPS. It's a Dell INTEL Celeron 2.53GHz w 256RAM running Windows XP pro w/ SP3That's the dual-boot selection screen DISPLAYED by the Ntldr. Edit your Boot.ini file using sysdm.cpl to delete the LINE which refers to Windows XP Home Edition.. MS Kb289022 is the reference and is found here.. Please do not omit the back-up of Boot.ini before you amend it.

Note that this does not remove XP Home from the hdd, just stops the dual-boot screen from appearing.

Good luckThat was easier than I thought it would be. Thanks! Thanks for coming back to report your success.

Solve : Is there a way to remove an email from the server??

Answer»

I have a friend who is having email trouble, everything seems to be working properly except the receiving of emails, they are still in the 90's on dial-up CONNECTION, and when I click the SEND and receive button it says "receiving message 1 of 125", but it just sits there and won't load the messages. What I think might be happening is the first message probably has a lot of PICTURES or something in it and it is too big for the connection rate. I adjusted the time out rate to the max of 5 minutes and it still won't load. Is there a way to clear the messages off the server without having to go through the pain of having bellsouth do this, which btw bellsouth is the server, outlook express is the reader and XP is the system.....any help would be appreciatedI'm afraid contacting them is the only solution...I've never heard of Bellsouth, but this solution is possible with many service providers.

Using your browser, go directly to the Bellsouth website. From the home page you should be able to access the Bellsouth post office directly, without using your mail client. Inspect the messages and delete any which are excessively large. If they contain pictures you'd rather not lose, open the pictures, then right-click and use the "save image as" option.

Once you've deleted any oversize messages, try again using OE to download the rest of the messages in the normal way.I've never seen this option with any ISP...Maybe it's not as common as I thought, but I've seen it with Australian/UK providers.Yes, Virginmedia in the UK allow you to access your ISP-provided email inbox VIA a web browser. They call it "Webmail".Comcast too.If it's a webmail account of course this would be true...
Not all ISP's use it though.I don't know about other ISPs, but with Comcast, I can either pickup my mail through Thunderbird, or I can log in to Comcast web site, and read my mail there.Quote from: patio on September 27, 2008, 09:03:47 PM

If it's a webmail account of course this would be true...
Not all ISP's use it though.

It isn't marketed as a webmail account; it's a smtp/pop3 type account but a few years ago they added the web access feature. Gotcha...So we would pretty MUCH need to go through them to get the problem fixed..As stated several times, visit the ISP's website and look for a WebMail button or something similar. Many ISP s now offer WebMail, thereby providing users a way to acccess their email via web browser. And, this applies to POP accounts, which is what your friend is using to download your email to Outlook Express.

If you can't find a button or link on their site for WebMail, then contact to inquire about accessing email via web browser. Once the email is accessed via web browser, do as alan1000 said in a previous post.

Quote from: Shynnie on November 10, 2008, 06:55:13 AM

Hi all

Can't believe it that no one picked up MomNEEDShelp's question.
Hey young BOY what you want to do is a system restore, a day in the past like 3 or so days backwards, neh.
------ How can you restore back to a date that you have no restore points, guy correct me if I'm
wrong, you can only restore back to your restore points that you have set them..

Next---- Your deleted items should all be in the recycle folder unless you empty that, or you little friend window LIVE wiped everything from the bin..

Solution -- There are tools that can recover deleted items but some return RAW DATA, try to download a recovering tool and I'm sure you will find your PHOTOS my boy...

HAPPY computer Classes little boy

I dont usually reply to this type of 'immature' post, especially when Shynnie has taken 4 pages to place a post on this topic with out, seemingly, having READ any of the other posts properly, but hey, here goes.

Firstly, System Restore (you can only restore back to your restore points that you have set them..) and also when installing applications etc. Have YOU asked if she has DONE this or not........Didnt think so

Secondly, (Next---- Your deleted items should all be in the recycle folder unless you empty that, or you little friend window live wiped everything from the bin..) This has already been answered, but having read the previous posts , you knew that...........Didn't think so!

Thirdly, (Solution -- There are tools that can recover deleted items but some return RAW DATA, try to download a recovering tool and I'm sure you will find your PHOTOS my boy...) She's tried that, eejit, but the Windows live cleanup writes over deleted files that are on the hard drive.

Maybe if you'd read any of the posts then your 'immature' response wouldn't sound so STUPID!!

Apologies to everyone else, I just needed to get that off my chest

Solve : How can you change the size of the forward and back buttons on Windows Explorer??

Answer»

How can you change the size of the forward and back buttons on Windows Explorer for Vista? I know that to change it for INTERNET Explorer, you have to go to the toolbar that has 'File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help', on it, right-click on that, and then choose "Use Large Icons". But when you go to try to do that same thing with Windows Explorer, the only things on the LITTLE menu that come up are 'Google' and 'LOCK the Toolbars'. How can you get that same 'Use Large Icons' thing to come up in Windows Explorer as in Internet Explorer? Thank you so MUCH for the time and effort of anyone who might be so KIND as to try to help me with this very vexing problem. In XP, you click on "View", "Toolbars", "Customize...". In the window that opens, you can choose "Large icons" from a drop-down menu.

It might be different in Vista but it is worth a try. Thanks, Kip. Unfortunately, when I just tried that, going to View and then Toolbars, again, the only two options that came up were Google and Lock the Toolbars. :-( Does anyone who uses Vista know this?I've searched but found no setting in Vista to change the size of those buttons. You might want to try this third-party icon editor: http://www.rw-designer.com/vista-icon-editor. I haven't used it, so I don't know exactly what it will do. Hmm, so there's no way to normally change it just within the normal options of the system itself? Mmmm....ok. That's just odd, because I could have sworn it used to be that way (Large Icons on Windows Explorer) before my computer got hit by lightning and I brought it in to be repaired and then after they fixed it, the system was set back to defaults and everything was all different from the ways I had it adjusted to be, the way I was used to it and the way I wanted it.Bump.

Solve : Unable to detect SATA HDD in XP with Asus MB?

Answer»

I seem to be having an issue with my new SATA HDD. Whenever I plug it into the PRI SATA port I do not see it on My Computer however when I am booting it up the BIOS can "see" it.

I am running an Asus K8v standard motherboard updated to the latest drivers I can find (1007) however the DISCS I got with the MB originally are of the first version of drivers so whenever I try to use it for "detect new drivers" in Hardware manager I don't get anywhere.

On Hardware manager it does state that a RAID controller's drivers do not work however nothing I try seems to be able to install the drivers needed.

I know the issue is not with EITHER the HDD or the port as I was able to successfully install Windows 98 on the drive, I just can't upgrade it to XP.

The XP Disc I have is Pre SP1 however the version of windows I am currently running is up to date as much as I can make it.If this PROBLEMS happens its usually because you dont have sp2 installed. If you are trying to load xp from scratch you may need to make a slippery disk by combining XP with SP2 and making bootable. Befroe U go to this hassle try swapping your ram sticks into another slot-it does help sometimes. Another way is to load the OS by plugging the drive into another comp (make sure to DISCONNECT existing drive) and then put it back into you comp.
cheers
spogYou need to install the RAID/SATA drivers from the MBoard driver CD.

Solve : Sending Email from Outlook Express - Error?

Answer»

When I try sending emails from Outlook Express I'm getting this error
"An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Email Problems - Aplus - Update', Account: 'admin - Aplus', Server: 'pro47.abac.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 5.7.1 Forbidden for policy reasons', Port: 465, Secure(SSL): YES, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC6F"

Please tell me what i can do to solve it. I was recently using Godaddy Server to send and receive emails but have switched to Aplus and it was after the change we started having this problem.

OUTGOING SMTP Port number is 465 (SSL Ticked) and my Incoming Port number is 110

FYI
OS: Windows XP SP2
Anti Virus - Trend Micro SMB
I think you need to contact the mail provider for the correct SETTINGS for outlook express. I do see its a secure server and that may be the problem, but i'm guessing.I agree with lostcoast. Where did you get port 465? Are you SURE that's right?please check your incoming & outgoing port address

Solve : [SOLVED] Ink Desktop Problem?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently tried to use Ink Desktop from the Windows XP 2005 Tablet PC Experience Pack ( http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tabletpc/experiencepack/default.mspx ). It does not seem to work, but has half my desktop colored orange, and keeps giving a .NET error. I tried uninstalling it, reinstalling it, rebooting after uninstalling it, etc., but it keeps trying to somehow start. I just want the tablet back to normal, it's alright if I can't use the ink desktop feature.

Here is the error I'm getting (attaching complete text as an attachment):

i have a problem that almost 2 month cant to solve the problem .

i have 1 pc using dell pc , my problem is the computer alway shutdown after 1 or 2 minutes is on.
i have format and install a new windows xp but the problem still persist
can you hel p melike I SAID in chat, get the hardware checked out at a computer shop. Before you spend some money at the shop, you can easily check few things yourself.

First of does the same thing happens, when you BOOT to Safe Mode?

If possible, download, unzip, and RUN (no installation needed)BlackBox: http://www.freewarefiles.com/BlackBox_program_45414.html
Post computer TEMPERATURES, along with processor model:

If you don't have enough time to download, because of computer shut down, download the program on another computer, and transfer it (CD, flash drive) to bad computer.

Run memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html

Run HD diagnostic: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287Quote

like I said in chat, get the hardware checked out at a computer shop.

Well, isn't that pretty much the answer to everything? Who need a forum? Well said...

Solve : can't see my user accounts, system restore, or yahoo messenger?

Answer»

I have windows xp. a week ago i tried to IM someone on yahoo. i could see what i was typing until i hit send, then nothing shows up. when someone answers me nothing shows in box. my ex bf has been messing around on my computer so i tried going into user accounts to CHANGE password so he couldn't get in. when user account box opens, you can't see anything inside the box. same for system restore. i tried to open it to restore point, thinking maybe he had done something. box opens but nothing inside. zip, nada, nothing, just an EMPTY box. what's up with that and how do i fix it please?I think your system is missing some important files and systems. You may want to back up PERSONAL files you want to keep on a external hard drive and then do a new install of windows.

On the new system gain control of the admin account and password it. Make others make their own log ins through user accounts in the control panel. or have them use a guest account to log in.

You could always try a recovery or a roll back but I think you will be more happy with a new install. ITs just like the 1st day when you get a new computer..fast and reliable and uncluttered.

Solve : loading xp on new computer?

Answer»

i have just put together a NEW computer but am unable to get xp to load on it.it start on the F6 setup i load the raid drivers and the mass storage drivers and when this finishes and comes up with will now load windows it just FREEZES. The specs are 5.8 twin core 64 amd processor ecs nvidia mother board 2GB RAM sata 750 GB hd and 500 watt power.could it be to do with the data rate transfer .i have tried partitioning the hd so to load on a smaller drive but nothing seems to work.Copy of XP or does it say Microsoft all over it ? ?yes it is a ms xp diskThe 2 things i have seen cause this most commonly is bad RAM or a dirty CD/DVD...
You can DLoad and run MemTest which makes a bootable CD...let it run at LEAST 2 hours.
For the CD clean it with a soft lint-free cloth.thanks i have tried different cds so i KNOW it is not that.but i had'nt thought about the ram being at fault as it is all new.and i don't get any peeps from the bios to say the ram is at fault.Pull one of the RAM sticks out and try to load. If it fails swap out that one with the other and try a load. If that works you'll know which one is bad.

Solve : help !?

Answer»

ok i GOT an older compaq computer laptop that i usually used just for my downloading of music.. but the other DAY it shut down on me & dont fully turn on anymore.. its starts up to da loading part & starts to load but then goes to the screen where it says it was shut down inproperly ect... & i try clickin safe mode & the last known START up that worked & nothing! all it does is goes to the loading bar thing & then goes back to the same screen were it ask me whether i want to start up in safe mode or those other options! it sucks man i have a lot! of music & pics of my family! but i come to realize ive probably lost everything! but i just to get this laptop workin again! can any1 help? thanks guys! ID truly appreciate it .. i no i have to reinstall windows & i got the original disk that came with it.. but how do i even do start wen it doesnt let me do anything??? you may have to do a recovery with the windows CD or whatever you got from the laptop maker to do this type of function. you can also use the hard drive as a slave on another computer to get all needed files off of it before something happens and its all gone.

I wholeheartedly recommend external USB drives for backing up files in case something like this ever happens.. it’s a good investment! And common senseIf you can, pull that hard drive out and slave it to another computer / get your music and pictures off / put it back in and reinstall Windoze. Make sure you have all the drivers for your system before.

Solve : need help with blue screen?

Answer»

I got one of my father-in-laws old computers. It is a hp pavilion xt948, when I got it home I noticed that it doesn't have a hard drive, i took one out of my old computer and started it up. It went through most of the boot untill it got to the xp logo and it then when to the blue screen for a SPLIT second, and went to the screen to boot under safe mode or normal. I tried to do safe mode but it did the same THING. I even tried to boot a xp DISC that I have and it won't do that either. I have tried everything that I can think of. Any help would be helpfull

Kylewhat happened when you tried the XP disk to boot? explain in detail if you can.

Please explain if WINDOWS was on the hard drive you pulled or was it an extra drive run as a SLAVE? if so did you switch the pins on the drive to make it a master?Unless the HDD you used had been formatted then sounds like trying to boot with a set up from another and different machine ... ain't gonna work. It is ''seeing'' a whole load of info and drivers that suit the old puter.

I think you are gonna need a fully formatted HDD and then apply your OS from scratch ..... plus too I wonder if you have drivers relevant to this mobo. You can't just plop a drive from another computer into a different one and expect it to work. In particular the hdd drivers won't be recognized by the new system.

Best to copy any data off that drive and reformat.

Solve : how do i connect computers wirelessly?

Answer»

I just bought three dell desktops, with built in wireless cards. If I connect one of them (computer A) to my modem to get internet, how do I wirelessly connect the other two computers so that they can access the internet through computer A?

I dont have a wireless router yet, so I cant run all three computers from a wireless router, and thats why I want to do it the other WAY. Once I get a wireless router, MAYBE Ill try to connect them to the wireless router, but for now how do I connect them wirelessly through computer A so that they can access the internet?
You'll need a wireless router....

Or you can search for an unsecured wireless connection in your neighborhood. Of course, you won't be connecting via Computer A...unless you have a router.i know that it is possible to have one computer as the intenet gateway and have the other computers access the internet. IM just wondering how to do that
You can't. As Saviour Said, you need a Wireless Router.the only way to do so would be to have the gateway computer have two network cards installed, and somehow configure the wireless card as a network bridge as WELL as a Ad-hoc AP. the other network card would be a STANDARD 10/100 ethernet and plug into your internet modem (cable or whatnot).

It's a million times easier just to get a cheap wireless router, though.

a MILLION.

times.

har... I mean, easier.Oh okay, so then I run the router setup on each computer, correct? But how does each computer get the IP address of the router? Anyway, once that is done, do I run the network setup wizard on each computer also?

Solve : Install image on another computer?

Answer»

When I got ready to reinstall Windows Media, I could not FIND the disc. I have Windows Home on another computer. My question is, if I make a backup image from the other computer..can I then install it on the one with the missing disc? No.Expanding on that "No." somewhat, there is nothing physical to stop you making (say) a Norton Ghost image of a hard drive with a Windows installation on it, and restoring it to a different machine. But it probably wouldn't work, most likely wouldn't even BOOT, unless the machines were 100% identical (even then you would have activation issues) and anyway it would be against the terms of a single machine Windows licence unless you immediately removed Windows from the other machine. The word "illegal" is often USED to describe such a situation. Rather loosely in my opinion. In my country, breaking a shrinkwrap EULA may be copyright "illegal" (civil) depending on what a court might say, rather than BURGLARY illegal (criminal) but no matter. No help to BREAK Microsoft EULAs on here.
