Solve : Mixed Problems: Explorer.exe, External HD?

Answer»

Hello Folks,

Gonna try and explain the best I can around the problems I currently have. Will be happy to answer any questions

My system is :

AMD Athlon XP 2700+, 512 RAM, RADEON 9200, 80GB HD

Its about three or more years old and used to work FINE, with some minor problems.

However the first problem is that my External Hard Drive is running extremely slow. (Ex-HD is 160Gb with power cable into mains)

Opening folders + displaying the contents takes a delayed time of around 1-2 minutes, maybe more !

Burning CD's from the music contents on the Ex-HD takes forever ... good 45mins-1hr

I download/upload to/from the External HD. On one occasion, when moving files from Ex-HD to My Documents, it deleted part of the contents.

My COMPUTERS browser is running slow, now my COMPUTER has delayed response times and is following a little in suit with the Ex-HD.

The internet is running quite slow at times, but seems to have picked up again.

When using the Ex-HD the explorer.exe process shoots up to 99% on average. I have checked that its the only explorer.exe process running, so its not that virus/problem. Sometimes it will react the same without the explorer.exe

The Ex-HD gets turned on when needed and off when its not.

Have recently opened PC to clear out dust as the fans were really loud, which i put down to a lot of building work in the house previously. These problems happened before i done this, and persisted after ... the good thing is the fans work fine

So far i have performed AVG (which is up-to-date) virus scan, CCleaner regularly, Spybot: Search & Destroy (up-to-date) and tried a reg cleaner from the advice of another. No such problems with those.

Just noticed that my Windows Media Player is now not displaying Videos, it will play the audio. The videos in question are MPEG's.

At my WITS end, I need the contents of the Ex-HD but its unbearable how slow it is and also how the computer is being affected.

Any ideas? Right click My Computer and select Manage...then choose Disk Management.

Find the external HDD and right click it and select Properties...

Post everything it says about that drive and we'll have a looksee.

Solve : Problem deleting user?

Answer»

Hello

I seem to have partially deleted a USER. I am trying to delete all users so I can proceed directly to my desktop without seeing all of the users on a Welcome screen.

I deleted a user and an error occurred near the end of the process. I did not write it down because I did not think I would need to go this far in RESOLVING the issue.

I have tried deleting again through User Accounts in Control Panel and also in Dos using the Start/Run userpasswords2 solution I found somewhere in a forum. This partially deleted user does not even appear in this list in the Dos mode solution.

I am running Windows XP SP2.

Thanks
VinceIf you want Windows to BOOT all the way to your desktop, you don't have to delete any users. Try this instead:
Start -> Run -> control userpasswords2
Select the account you want Windows to login to automatically
Un-check the box that says "Users must enter a user name"
Enter your PASSWORD if you have ONE, otherwise leave blank
Click OK

If you want to log in as a different user, then Start -> Logoff and it will show the Welcome Screen

Solve : unable to connect to shared folders?

Answer»

I recently had to reinstall MS server 2K on my server. Before doing so, my pc could connect to the shared folders on my server just fine. After the reinstall, I cant connect anymore. When I try, a login prompt appears, asking for an admin password. When I type in the admin password I use on my server, it keeps loading the login prompt, not recognizing the passowrd. How can I fix this so I can view the contents of those folders again?? Any help is greatly appreciatedHere

Should be the same for Win2K...Have you set up the network name?
When you are prompted to log in, type
NETWORKNAME\user
(Where NETWORKNAME is the network name, and USER is the username)
and then the password

Ive TRIED USING the admin password when the prompt comes up, but its not recognizing it. It just keeps loading the prompt and eventually times out. On the server, I even created a user with the same name as my computers name, and put it in the admin GROUP, and tried logging in with that account, but still no luck. There must be another setting Im overlookingSo the reinstall on the server went ok, right? Did you install over the existing OS or do a clean install? Is it set up as a domain or workgroup? If a workgroup, can you logon to the workstation (not the workgroup) change the workgroup name to something ELSE, reboot, then change it back to the old workgroup name / recreated the admin account on the local computer?

Alan <>< try this software for a simple but works answer to your problem:-http://www.networkmagic.com/

there is a trial period before you must buy or the software is reduced in operations, but so far i cannot see the differenceale52:

So the reinstall on the server went ok, right? yup, not a problem
Did you install over the existing OS or do a clean install? clean install
Is it set up as a domain or workgroup? workgroup
If a workgroup, can you logon to the workstation (not the workgroup) change the workgroup name to something else, reboot, then change it back to the old workgroup name / recreated the admin account on the local computer? Ill try this now and see what happens. the one thing I havent thought of yet

Solve : Formating without windows xp disc?

Answer»

Hey all , i was just WONDERING wether it was possible to wipe my pc of its programs and software / hardware wihout the xpdisc i USED windows washer before to FORMAT my pc made a bootble DISC and nofing worked had to take my pc to a shop , so how would i do it without messing anything up . Cheers for your time . First of all, why do you want to format your hard drive? Is it a spare?
Second, if it is your main hard drive, you can't really format the drive without messing things up. Formatting erases your hard drive. ALWAYS back up your data before making system changes.DLoad a WinME bootdisk file from bootdisk.com...double clik it with a fresh floppy in the drive to create the bootdisk.
Re-boot.
At the A: prompt type in format C: /u and hit Enter.
Let it finish.

What OS are you going to be re-installing without the XP CD ? ?

p.s. if you do not have a floppy drive there are instructions at the above site to create a bootable CD with the same tools...Everyone needs a real Windows CD sooner or later.

Where did yours go?

Solve : Need help with NTLDR?

Answer»

?there might be lets wait for more SUGGESTIONS from other members of the forum.

one thing you could do is slave the hhd to your other computer and try to recover the important FILES that way.ummm...I'm not sure how to do that.... I don't know a lot about computershttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+slave+a+harddrive

google helps alotWell, I looked at slaving the hard drive and I don't really know how comfortable I would be pulling apart two computers like that....ok... lets see what other members have to sayOkay, I'll wait to see if ANYONE else has any ideas....Since you have no XP CD this PROCESS is a bit trickier...

Travel Here and read everything carefully to make SURE these conditions apply in your case...if not DO NOT attempt the listed fix as you may hose your XP install and not be able to recover.

If you do decide this method applies i suggest printing it out as a guide...Quote from: ahousholder on May 14, 2007, 11:05:59 AM

no they didn't give me one. I asked about one, and I was told that they quit giving them out with the computers. It's completly RETARDED because what do they expect me to do when something like this happens?

What company did this, or what computer make is this?

Solve : Computer freezes when I start MS Word?

Answer» EXCELLENT suggestions by soybean...this will also improve things.

As far as space is concerned i would consider adding another HDD to that machine as the pricing right now is pretty reasonable...

And or consider getting a DVD burner to store data...they can be had now from newegg for about 40 bucks shipped.
Defrag is set to run once a week. I'm going to try Ccleaner and suggest that she adds an extra HDD because the CD burner is an old one and will only burn to CD-R's. A new HDD to run her machine and the old one for backup storage. ThanksJust remember that ALL hard drives fail eventually, so if important data is important, just a hard drive is not the solution. The MS Word saga continues. She called me this morning to tell me that she can open Word, gets an error message and it closes. I found 3 normal.dot files; two which were created when she started having trouble and one when I tested it. Deleted the files and it RUNNING again. What's HAPPENING here? I tried Ccleaner and added 60 megs of free HDD space. The only thing that she has been doing differently is to save her mail messages as .txt file, bringing them into Word and converting them to .doc files.
Oh yes, GX1 Man, I was thinking about the problem of storage during my jog this morning and I've come to the conclusion there is no foolproof WAY to save your data. Disks, HDD and any other storage method are doomed to failure or obsolesence. All we can hope for is that the information is protected for as long as we need it. More than 1 location is best. A spare hard drive is good AND an OPTICAL drive backup. That's what I do. I have two HDD and I back up each one to the other therefore I'm protected if one fails. If both fail at the same time, I'm toast.Could someone please explain exactly what the normal.dot file is?

According to this link, the normal.dot file should not be deleted. Just change the extension. Everything else I read about this problem was telling me to delete the file so I guess the lesson here is not to believe everything you find on the net. When it's deleted it's automatically recreated on the next restart...Yep, it can be deleted. Just keep in mind that if you've customized any toolbars or gone into Tools, Options, and changed preferences from default settings, you'll lose those things when you delete Normal.dot and allow Word to create a new one. I'm not sure about macros; you might lose them, too.

Solve : Help!!, I'm Locked out?

I have an older desktop computer that runs on Windows 2000. I hadn't used it in a while & wanted to make sure I had all files off of it before I ditched the computer. My problem is I couldn't remember my password until the computer locked me out. I now have a message that says I need to contact the administrator.

Is there anyway to get around this so I can LOG on?

Question, is it permited on this forum to tell him how to get around a password?

Solve : Boot problems and Repair Installation not working??

Answer»

Hi,

I am having a frustrated time at trying to get my PC (Windows XP with Service Pack 2) booting up. Having booted up the day before, I suddenly got the following error after the dell splash screen,

Invalid Boot Diskette
Insert Boot Diskette in A:

In the BIOS settings, the boot order is hard-drive, cd-rom, then floppy (I have also tried changing the order). I first inserted a floppy boot disk, but the following message occurred,

Starting Caldera DR-DOS

HIMEM.SYS 2.34

Bad or missing command interpreter

Please enter a valid filename (e.g. C:\command.com)

After this FAILED, I decided to put in my XP CD, and it got to the installation options screen. I don't want to do a fresh install as I have data on the hard drive that has not been backed up. But when I try and do a Repair Installation, it goes to a screen where it recognizes my current hard drive, with the the total amount and free space available, but for some reason, its says this partition cannot be accessed.

Does anyone know why this happens? Is my hard drive locked or something? Does anyone have any ideas I could try.

I have looked at other forums and one possible solution is to go to the RECOVERY console and type in the following,

FIXMBR C:
FIXBOOT C:
COPY CDDrive:I386NTLDR C:
COPY CDDrive:I386|NTDETECT.COM C:
BOOTCFG /rebuild

but I am not sure it will not corrupt any data I have saved on my hard drive. Can anyone confirm this? Is this a good solution?

ThanksQuote

is there a diskette in the floppydrive? this would explain why it refused to boot, cause bios in most cases are set to boot from floppy first, by default. No, there is no floppy disk in the drive. I tried the floppy boot disk I had, which is where I got the other error about the "Bad or missing command interpreter".Quote from: delluser07 on May 04, 2007, 06:04:44 AM
No, there is no floppy disk in the drive. I tried the floppy boot disk I had, which is where I got the other error about the "Bad or missing command interpreter".

reset your bios chip USING jumpers, unplug the floppy drive ... i remember having problems somewhat the same a long time ago, but i cant remember how i solved it.. What do you mean by "reset your bios chip using jumpers"?
Just load the default values, no need to do that with the jumpers.

You should diagnose your HDD using software provided by the HDD manufacturer. I have actually tried to "Load Default Setup" in the BIOS but that didn't work either.

I'll try to diagnose my hard drive, I'm assuming the software is loaded onto a floppy and I insert it when I start my PC up.

Are there any other possible solutions? I won't have access to the internet until NEXT Tuesday, so I would like to try as many things as possible before then.We don't have enough information, but if you're eager to get the problem solved or just short of time I'd do the following:

1. Hook up the HDD as a slave in another PC and copy all the files you want back-upped to that machine
2. Diagnose the HDD to see if it is failing
3. If it isn't, reformat and reinstall
4. If it is, buy a new HDD.

Notes;

1. Scan the HDD for viruses when hooking it up to the other PC to see if that could possibly be the problem
2. Install AVG Free right after you reinstalled Windows.

Just a reminder; this is one possible solution, there are more but since you're not going to be here I'd stick to that plan as it's bound to solve your problem and make sure your files remain SAFE. If they can still be salvaged.

As for your diagnostic diskette; yes, you need a bootable 1.44MB diskette. You can find the diagnostic software hereOK, I'll give it a go, thanks.

I'll let you know what happens.Unfortunately, it looks my hard disk is damaged. I added it to my friend's computer but the hard drive couldn't even load. It keeps on clicking, trying to boot up.

And as mentioned before, when I get to the reinstall screen, it displays "setup cannot access this disk". When I press Install from here, I get the blue screen of death .

Any other possible solutions? There is data that needs to be recovered. One thing I've tried in the past..and it is hit-and-miss if it works. Put the drive in the freezer (that's right, the freezer) and let it set for a few hours. Pull it out and slave it again. Otherwise, you will need to look into a data recovery company to retrieve your data. And they're not cheap.

Alan <>< A freezer !!!!!:o

I've never heard of that one before. Why should that work? I'll give it a go anyway in the next couple of days. I'm assuming it won't damage a thing. Just a quick note, the BIOS does recognize the hard drive, just can't read from it.

In terms of data recovery, isn't there any software on the internet that could do the job?Not if the drive is making the "click of Death" and not spinning up properly....

If you try Alan's method be prepared ahead of time to copy/image or back up the drive. Sometimes you will have as little as 3 or 4 minutes to work with.

Solve : Entering Batch parameters at execution?

Answer»

Many years ago when I was much better acquainted with batch files, we could input information at runtime by including a flag for a prompt. For example, let's SAY that I wanted to run a batch backup PROGRAM from a Windows icon, and I wanted to put the backup files at a certain location SPECIFIED at run time. In the field where I would specify the executable I would put something like this:

c:\...\MyBatch.bat /p

At run time a small dialog would pop up and ask for input. WELL, "/p" no longer WORKS (if it was the correct flag in the first place). Does anyone know how to do what I am suggesting? Is the option even available any more?

TIA!

Monitors under 10" should be set to 800x600
Monitors over this size should be set to 1024x768

Some monitors only support 600x400, but most of those monitors are over 12 years old. 640 by 480At least change it to 800x600 and if your video card supports it try 1024x768 LIKE Zylstra said But if it is a smaller monitor get the glasses out

Have run Spybot S&D , Adaware , Xoftspy and Avast in safemode and boot time SCAN, and same THING...

Please helpCan you Login to the System using SafeMode. If you couldn't login through safemode then it may be hardware problem. First Check the system by changing RAM. Then GAVE a look on the Motherboard that any condenser has been boomed up.

If you could able to login. Then Download "Ad-Aware Se Personal" from download.com try updating it and then go for a full scan.

Try the following Steps:

1. Goto START=>Run=>Msconfig
Select Startup Tab then Uncheck all the unwanted Entries.

2. Goto Start=>Run=>RegEdit
HKLM=>Software=>Microsoft=>Windows=>CurrentVersion=>Run
HKLM=>Software=>Microsoft=>Windows=>CurrentVersion=>RunOnce

Delete Unwanted Entries.

Solve : What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2?

Answer»

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP SERVICE Pack 2

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

If your original system is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) version preinstalled with the computer, I recommend contacting the computer manufacturer first before installing SP2. Please ask them if any of the software applications and hardware DRIVERS need to be updated for SP2. Otherwise, installing SP2 may CAUSE unexpected problems. Thank you for your understanding on this issue.

This is some REAL good basic advice, . . probably the best I've seen.

Jp

Jp ....... So how is your XP SP2 working now ?

dl65 dl65

I need RAM to install, but if you would tell me, would it be ADVISABLE,

to uninstall a software program that isn't being used and uses 142 MB of

space, or is listed in A/R as that size ?

Will this give me what I need ?

Jp

Jp ....... You should have a minimum of 256 of ram ......... 512 would be even better. If you have software that you dont use, get rid of it ........ but you still need at least 256 mb of Ram for XP/SP2 to run properly
Removing programs will only release hard drive space...... it will not increase the RAM capacity.

dl65 don't get caught twice, folks!

I was thinking that it might be overheating but sometime the computer is not even one longenought to overheat.

If the CPU fan is shot, it will over heat quickly.well i hear the fan running i was thinking of getting a can of air and cleaning the fans. That's a cheap fix if that is the problem. Be sure and do it properly. Don't spin the blades as fast as you can.Quote from: patio on May 23, 2007, 03:19:31 PM

He never did say it happened when on battery of plugged in or both ways.
Sounds to me like it is a weak battery and it is set up with desktop settings and not notebook settings, which EXPLAIN why it would just shut off without warning.
Lets us know, it does make a difference

Solve : .dll problem?

Answer»

Hi all,

I reformatted my computer and i needed to install my printer. Its an HP F370 all in one. Whilst installing it come up with an error stating that i am missing TWO .dll FILES slbcsp.dll ad sccbase.dll. I have downloaded these two .dll files and placed them in the /system32 folder. I tried again to install and again it COMES up with error. I also tried to run in cmd the code: "regsvr32 sccbase.dll" and "regsvr32 slbcsp.dll" but it comes up with an error see images.

Installation error:
Run "regsvr32" error: See here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798I have GONE through those steps but it still doesnt work. I get those errors as soon as i attempt to register .dll files. Is this a USB printer ? ?
If so they aren't supposed to be hooked up until you are prompted to do so installing the drivers.
Remove it from Device Manager and un-install the software in Add/Remove....

Re-boot and start with only the installation CD...Yes i tried that but i still get the same problem, i also have ANOTHER problem which im not sure if it associates with this. I have a external hard drive usbex but it doesn't get recognized by the system. I tried to dl drivers for it but supposedly it is meant to be installed with XP already.

Solve : Windows Me machine has 'crashed'?

Answer»

Ok, details are:

Op system Windows Me, computer bought around 2000-2001. Has run perfectly well until last week. System is NOT online and has not been since 2005. Took a COUPLE of freebie game programs via zip-drive and installed and played. On exit from one game (or game exitted, hard to tell) the display went to basic 16 colors. Tried reboot and system says INVALID device, and display still shot. Swapped in other monitor, and finally got display, but still 16 colors and no options to change. In the meanwhile, zip-drive no longer shows, as does the CD drive, and Control Panel does not give anything, not even the base window display. Reboot in safe mode still leaves system in total 'basic' mode. Dos based game programs such as Freecell, SOLITAIRE, etc still run fine as does Notepad. Installed Microsoft Office programs fail on STARTUP, but I'm guessing it's because fo the display issues. Can copy to old floppy drive, but at 1.4 meg a go, it's really hard to copy files, as you can imagine.

So, question is, can I take out the hard drive and install it in another machine where the zipdrive works, to secure personal data, or (I'm not too hopeful here) can I rebuild the system without losing personal data files? I can't run the restore CD that came with the system as the CDROM drive is 'inaccessible'. Could I install a new motherboard and expect to reload without losing data?

Many thanks in advance for any tips, suggestions, sympathy, old-fogey jokes, hey whatever you've got, I'll read...

BTW, I've been working with computers for over 30 years and PCs since MS-DOS in '81 so I'm not 'computer-ignorant'. I'm techie-minded, just not totally au-fait with rebuilding at this level...

Thanks

You should be able to take out the hard drive and install it as a second drive on another computer. If you want to boot to your drive, it may work as long as the other computer has similar hardware as the original computer, and there are no hard or soft errors on your hard drive.Windows ME has a system restore capability as well.

Perhaps you could restore to a point before this and not have to move any hard drives?

How do u do that? (if it is possible)RAM is hardware. Solve : Desktop Icons keep re-arranging themselves?

Answer»

Windows XP Home Edition service pack 2

Hi

I'm hoping someone here can help me with a annoying problem that has recently DEVELOPED on my system.

Whenever I switch the system on my desktop icons are not in the original places, also my quicklaunch bar is always switched off (I have to go to the TASKBAR-PROPERTIES in order to switch it back on. Also when I re-arrange the desktop to my liking sometimes when OPENING folders or files the desktop suddenly seems to glitch and then re-arranges itself!

I have tried a system restore but that fails to complete properly, I've run virus scans which are negative. Win XP says it's saving my settings when I TURN off, so I'm at a loss as to why this is happening. Everything else seems to work fine.

Any ideas gratefully received

Thanks
Jon
What protection are you using?when did start?? any new software or hardware added to the machine??I have'nt installed any new software as far as i can remember except a freeware program called regseeker (it cleans the windows registry) I think i used that but I ran the backup facility in that software so the registry should be as it was.

As to protection i use the windows firewall, panda on-line virus scan & avg anti-virus

Jonummm look at my signature get those programs up date them run scans in SAFE mode(rapidly tap f8 before winodws loads) run them one at a time,

Right clik an empty area of the desktop and select arrange icons...make sure auto arrange is turned off...Thanks for your suggestions, I've basically tried all the scans, anti-virus, spybot, superantispyware, ccleaner etc. Auto Arrange is switched off as well.

None of this has fixed the problem, my desktop icons are still not where they should be on boot up & the quicklaunch bar is absent. The desktop still glitches & re-arranges itself sometimes for example when I have a lot of windows open & I hit the show desktop button from the quicklaunch bar.

Could this be a graphics card issue I ask myself??Did you have the problem before you installed regseeker / did you do a registry restore (not system restore) from the back up of the registry you did?

Alan <>< Alan

I had this problem for a while, I think it probably did manifest itself after I installed regseeker. I have backed up the registry from within regseeker, except one item on the regseeker backup list won't restore I get an 'error accessing the registtry' message.

Basically I don't have much experiance regarding registry issues, so if this problem is related to the registry then I feel pretty stuck.try system restoreAlready tried that, system restore only gets so far...on re-boot it tells me that it could'nt be completed!System File Checker.

Start/Run sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it run to COMPLETION and re-boot when it's finished...

Do you have more than one drive/partition ? ?

There is only 1 partition for the drive of 60gb.

I have run the demo for GetDataBack and it seems to be finding a lot of files from previous partitions, so hopefully I can recover as much as possible.http://www.grc.com/cs/licenseinfo.htm

There is the money back guarantee and an e-mail address.OK, Thanks.Well I got really lucky as GetDataBack recovered most of the important files I had on the deleted partitions.

As the 160gb hard drive itself is in good condition, it currently has a 10gb partition with 140gb unallocated space. As I have BACKED up my recovered data to a different drive, would there be a problem if I was to delete this 10gb partition and recreate and format a new 100gb partition using Disk Management.

My current C: drive is the drive I have backed up data to but is very slow, and the 160gb drive is set as a slave. If you have backups of everything you need from the 160 then delete all partitions and set new ones that are more manageable such as 80/80 or 40/120 or whatever...
Make sure to make the first partition active and if it's going to run XP 20G should be a bare minimum...

Once done with that then use the 160 drive manuf. utilitities to "clone" the other drive to the first partition of the 160...

Then remove the master/OLD drive and set the 160 as master...

You will now be booting to an exact replica of your old C: drive but with a slight performance boost since the 160 is probably a tad faster.

You can then after testing everything WORKS correctly you can format the old drive and use it as a slave storage drive. And I would definitely check both drives with the free diagnostics at the appropriate drive maker's site. Thanks for the help!

Solve : Windows Explorer Problem. Help.?

Answer»

Okay this is gonna be kinda long so stay with me on this one. Lately I had problems connecting to the internet which has obviously been solved. The problem had been with clearing the DNS cache and after trying basic setting alterations and system restore in safe mode. Nothing worked. So I decided to try and reinstall the modem driver which would hopefully restore the required files and settings to allow internet access. This seemingly worked at correcting the fault in the network connection. But I was LEFT with a problem with WINDOWS explorer that I have recently DISCOVERED. Every time I attemp to right click or delete any file or folder it freezes and comes up with the error report. After I send or don't send the error report the window closes and explorer.exe reboots. This happens everytime and is a big problem. Please help.

- PeteWhat protection are you using, and do you have a real Windows CD if needed? How much free space on the drive?GX1_Man: umm.. I'm using Zonealarm, YES I do have a real Windows CD and the drive's capacity is 40 GB and there is 24 GB free.Is ZA your only protection program ? ?

If so you may want to beef up your security as it is a firewall but not much else...

AVG Free
Spybot
AdAware
AVG Anti-Spyware
CCleaner

All the above are free, so no reason not to add them.Patio: No Zonealarm is not my only protection program. Just my firewall as you mentioned. I also have anti-virus and anti-spyware programs like the ones you listed. The problem doesn't SEEM viral... But I'm not sure. Thank-you.if you ave just installed your os there is a problem in your installer. There are some files missing. another source is that your explorer is inflicted with a virus that causes the explorer to send reports to microsoft.
by the way are you using a license version of os?Steelfaith: My Operating System was installed a fair while ago and this aspect has previously been funtioning as it should. The OS is licenced and came with the computer. I'll try and run some anti-virus programs in safe mode and see what turns up. But as I said before the problem doesn't seem viral. Thanks for the insight, there may indeed be some files missing.Peter if your OS is Win2K or newer to repair system files go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your OS CD handy as it will probably ask for it...Thanks Patio I'll give it a try.

Solve : Computer keeps restarting - really desparate?

Answer»

Hello everyone, sorry if this is in the wrong place but I really need help.

I have an emachine 820 desktop which runs on windows xp.

I turned on my computer the other day and got a black screen which said that there was a bad startup, and that I should chose to logon on in safemode, or use the last known working system which was to start Windows normally.

I selected it but before it gets to the logon screen the computer just restarts after the windows icon comes on.A blue screen flashes up with ome text but I can't read it as it goes so fast. I have tried starting in safemode but the same thing happens except that the windows icon does not appear.

I haven't installed any new programs recently, nor have I added any hardware.

Is there any way of getting the compter to work? I really don't want to lose my files on it because I am doing exams and have not backed up my data recently.

Any help really appreciated.Do you have a real Windows CD, if needed, or a restore disk or what?

I would try downloading and BURNING a Linux Live CD and see if it can boot with that properly. It will not write anything to the drive, so your data is safe. Knoppix is a good one, or Ubuntu, etc.GX1_Man,

Thank you. Have downloaded and burned ubuntu and it's now running on my PC.

Hopefully I can get things moving from here.

Incidentally, I called PC World's "Helpdesk" who said nothing could be done and wanted to charge me from £25 the privilege of trying to RECOVER my files and then wiping the hard drive.

If it means anything, I think you and others on this forum are worth more than all of PC Worlds STAFF put together.

Thank you again.Quote from: wonderdunder on MAY 22, 2007, 08:42:07 AM

I think you and others on this forum are worth more than all of PC Worlds staff put together.

That's not saying much. Lol! I know,

What I meant to say was that this forum and the people who contribute are brilliant beyond words! The staff at UK PC World are trained to NOT tell you what is wrong, even if they know bloody well what is the matter with your PC. They have to say, "Bring it in for a £40 health check". They face disciplinary action or the sack if they go against that. They don't mind, they're all muppets anyway.

I gathered....

By the way, I have managed to save all the documents I wanted.

Is there any way of using ubuntu to get my PC going again without having to wipe the hard drive and then reinstall everything? I've tried running antivirus programs on it, but ubuntu won't have it.

I'm not very computer literate in these matters, so apologies if I seem to be asking a rather silly questions.

Thanks again. There is an option of a Repair Install of XP provided you have an MS XP CD and not an OEM restore disk...

I suggest reading through it to become familiar with the procedure and printing out a copy for reference before you start...

If done properly you will be back booting to XP with all your programs and data INTACT...Thanks for the help again.

I eventually decided to wipe the hard drive and simply re-install. Worked for the better as there were a few things on there that I didn't want, so it is a bit of a forced spring clean.

Thanks for all teh help again.

A good format and reinstall will solve all Windows problems....for a while. I would still seriously consider investing in a new PSU...
It's amazing to me that it's probably one of the most important components in a well running machine and everyone ignores it til it's too late.

But that's just me...

Solve : Double installation XP?

Wenn I made a new installation of XP on my HD, I erroneously didn't install it over the old one, but made a second installation on the same partition. On starting my computer I am asked which copy of XP I want to use. I tried to remove the first installation, but found no possibillity. Oh brother.....

Indeed something wrong? The point is you said "you can't do this, but if you did...."

You can do this, and there are more ways to solve it than what you posted.I made the suggestion of seeing if they were different installations because it is also possible that the original poster looked at their setup wrong and they actually do have xp installed on two different partitions. If each of the entries in boot.ini went to a different installation, then they would obviously have it installed two times, on different partitions. Then they would need to know which entry to delete and which partition to format.
Are you saying that you can install xp multiple times on one partition?
Also, I am by no means a compendium of all windows information as you seem to be. Forgive me for encroaching on your domain.Quote from: michaewlewis on May 19, 2007, 08:59:57 PM
Also, I am by no means a compendium of all windows information as you seem to be. Forgive me for encroaching on your domain.

Let's say I would prefer no information included in a post (or no post) rather than wrong information, which does the original poster no GOOD at all, and ties us up with having to CORRECT it. So correct me, I'm fine with that. I'm sure the original poster is fine with that. What is really useless in a post is for a user to make blank stares and hinting that there is something wrong with someone else's information and not offering the correct information.
btw, I would love to know what additional information you have about the original topic.
Actually, I wasn't hinting. I told you straight up. As the original poster has apparently been abducted by aliens, I would suggest to him that the perfect and foolproof action would be to format the drive and install fresh, just one time. (You can also edit the boot. ini file, and delete the extra installation if it truly is in another DIRECTORY.) As we do not know exactly what he did is his mishap it would be hard to advise him further. As he did this, we know that he can install an operating system, so let's try again the right way. actually, i just posted another THREAD about this. i got a virus, bsod, comp wouldnt start. so i decided to see if installing windows again would work. the installer told me that i already had xp on my system, so i just chose to install it to a directory named windows2. now when i boot up it gives me the choices:

win xp
win xp

worked for me since all i wanted was to get my pictures and other files backed up before formatting and starting all over.

so ya...my pc friend, you have to reinstall XP, but this time delete the partitiion and create another one making it 4000 mb...have funif you want juast a single os w/o erasing the other, try to go to the properties of My Computer, advnced tab, startup and recovery settings then uncheck the list of os.d12o40; he already has 2 installs of XP...are you suggesting a third ? ?

jaydawg; he is looking to remove one install...why re-install ? ?

steelfaith; this will only remove the listing of one of the OS's and not accomplish much...

This thread is accomplishing nothing either since he has not returned.

Solve : Windows GUI?

Answer»

What GUI does Windows RUN or use or watever? Not sure what you mean. Windows doesn't "use" a GUI, Windows is the GUI.
Define exactly what you mean, your question doesn't make any sense. Is this more homework? I thought school was out. Schools never out. In Linux you can choose which GUI to use like Gnome. I guess i DONT understand windows very well. But windows is the OS does it have a seperate GUI or is it the GUI? I have no idea wats going onWindows uses different themes - it comes with Classic (Win2k, basically) and two variants (BLUE and silver) of the standard Luna theme.
Does that go some way towards answering your question?Quote from: MacDaddy121 on May 18, 2007, 07:14:19 AM

I already told you! Didn't you understand what I wrote? Windows is its own GUI. Graphical User Interface. Unlike Linux where X-Windows runs on top of command line OS, with different GUIs, Gnome, KDE NextStep etc.

Windows is the OS. Windows is the GUI.

Simple as really...On Linux you can only choose from gnome or KDE, on Windows you can install curtains, DRAPES, Venetian BLINDS...

Just go to your local Linens 'n Things.

Solve : Isass.exe PROBLEM?

Answer»

my comp will get to windows start up PAGE and then display this..

Isass.exe- system error

Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API

What does this meen and what can i do?It means you should post as much info about your flavor of Windows system information and what security apps you are running so we can assist further...

You're possibly infected, which takes as much info as you can provide.
The worm exploits the Windows LSASS vulnerability, which is a buffer overrun that allows remote code execution and enables an attacker to gain full control of the affected system. To propagate, it scans the network for vulnerable systems. When it finds a vulnerable system, this malware sends a specially crafted packet to produce a buffer overflow on LSASS.EXE. This worm can cause LSASS to crash and force Windows to restart."

Microsoft indicates in a security bulletin entitled Windows XP Users: What to do if your computer has been infected by Sasser that you should:

Disconnect from the Internet
Stop the shutdown cycle
Mitigate the vulnerability
Improve system performance
Enable a firewall
Reconnect to the Internet
Install the REQUIRED OS update
Check for and remove Sasser
The exact steps are outlined on Microsoft's site, and they also link to a malware remover too, the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.

http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

I have my doubts that this is actually our ever-beloved worm. I think it's just a matter of mistaking the letters. But to be safe...

socialoutburst,
Copy EVERYTHING inside the quote box below (starting with dir) and paste it into Notepad. Go up to File > Save As... and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as search.bat on your desktop.

Quote

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe /a h > result1.txt
dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\isass.exe /a h > result2.txt

Open/run search.bat and it will produce two Notepad files (result1 and result2). Copy the contents of each file and paste them here.

This METHOD isn't surefire, but it searches for isass in its most common location. You should, of course, run a virus scan also. This is why a lack of info especially in an infection topic can set things in motion down many paths...follow CBMatts ADVICE and the suggestions on system specs and more specifics etc.......

Solve : How do I UNinstall a partially Installed Windows XP??

Answer»

Hello,
It has been a long time since I visited this great forum.
I love to tinker with computers just for fun. I am retired, along with my hubby, and although I have a great Compaq R3000 Laptop, and a Dell Desktop that is about 2 plus, years old, I have saved the old relic Gateway 2000 Pentium2's( have two of them) just to work on for LEARNING purposes.

Last year I tried my hand at reformatting. Idid it, with encouragement and help, and felt so accomplished.

I tried to install ( using the Windows XP operating SYSTEM CD that came with my laptop) onto the older Gateway. Found out that you can't do that. So I have had a almost COMPLETED Windows XP on this old system, that was never activated.

My question now is how do I get that off, and then re-install the old Windows 98 back on there?
It keeps asking me when it boots up to activate.... which of course needs to be done through Microsoft phone support. I don't want to do that , therefore I want it back off..... any suggestions?

I found a "Boot Rescue Diskette for laptops and PC's loads your CD ROM Drive for MS Windows Installations. I booted with that, and then put the WIN 98 CD in to try and install Win98.( I was told that if I installed 98, it would automatically do away with the partially installed XP....) The instructions were to put in the WIN98CD and type in R:\i386\WINNT.EXE.. and it keeps SAYING "R drive has not finished reading... abort, retry, fail?

probably doesn't make any sense, but as I said, I am a learn'n!

Solve : INTERNET SHUTS DOWN AND COMPUTER REBOOTS ON ITS OWN?

Answer»

I RECENTLY HAD A LOT OF VIRUSES ON MY COMPUTER SO I TOOK IT IN AND IT WAS ALL CLEANED OFF AND EVERYTHING WAS REINSTALLED. I HAVE A COMPAQ 7550 COMPUTER. THE INTERNET WAS WORKING GREAT FOR A DAY AND A HALF. THEN A MESSAGE KEEPS COMING UP THAT SAYS. MICROSOFT HAS AQUIRED A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND HAS TO SHUT DOWN. THIS HAPPENED MANY TIMES AFTER TRYING TO GO SOMEHWERE ELSE. SO I THOUGHT MAYBE IT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH MY IP ADDRESS SO I CALLED MY LOCAL CABLE COMPANY AND THEY SAID EVERYTHING LOOKED FINE BUT WERE GOING TO TRY AND HELP ME TROUBLESHOOT. THEY TOLD ME TO SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER AND THEN UNPLUG THE INTERNET CONNECTION AND WAIT FOR 45 SECONDS AND THEN REPLUG IN INTERNET CONNECTION AND THEN RESTART COMPUTER. WHEN I PUSHED MY ACCOUNT TO COME UP AND MY ICONS CAME ON BLINKING A FEW TIMES FAST AND THEN MY COMPUTER REBOOTED ON ITS OWN. IT DID THIS A FEW TIMES. THE PERSON THOUGHT THAT WHEN THE STUFF WAS PUT BACK ON THE COMPUTER THAT MAYBE A FEW FILES WERE MISSING OR WERE BAD. SO I HAVE A COMPAQ RECOVERY SYSTEM SO I DID THAT AND THE INTERNET SEEMS TO WORK FOR A LITTLE WHILE AND THEN IT SAYS MICROSOFT HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND HAS TO SHUT DOWN. I HAVE THE MCAFFIE
FIREWALL, ANTIVIRUS, AND I THINK ITS SPYWARE. GOT ANY IDEA WHATS HAPPENING WHEN THE INFO WAS PUT BACK ON COMPUTER BY THE GUY I PAID AND WHEN I DID THE SYSTEM RECOVERY, THE FIRST THING I DID WAS PUT THE MCAFFIE BEFORE DOING ANYTHINGIT LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE INFECTED WITH THE CAPSLOCK VIRUS. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS INFECTION THAT NEEDS IMMEDIATE ATTENTION!!!

What OS are we talking about here?
Do you have any other PROTECTION besides McAfee?
Mind turning off the CapsLock?IM NOT SURE WHAT OS IS. MCAFFIE IS THE ONLY ONE I HAVE. THE CAPS LOCK THING THAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. IS THAT THE CAPS LOCK KEY ON THE KEYBOARD? THE COMPUTER THAT I AM USING NOW IS NOT THE ONE THAT HAS THE PROBLEM. WHAT WILL THIS VIRUS DO? DO I HAVE TO HAVE EVERYTHING REINSTALLED AGAIN?OS = Operating System ... Linux, Windows 98, Windows XP, etc.

And yes, I'm referring to the CapsLock key. When you type in all caps, it makes your posts difficult to read/understand. Turning it off would make this a bit easier.

You might want to get AVG Free on that computer. However, after reading your post again, I'm not so sure this is virus-related. It's hard to say, though.

What exactly did you do with the Compaq Recovery? Did you reformat this computer (deleting everything and returning the computer to factory settings)?

Do you have a genuine Windows CD?Sorry I thought you were serious! I am not a typer and its easier to type this way. I have windows xp. No i dont have a genuine windows cd. And yes, that is what the compaq recovery cd does.No no, I'm just cranky and like giving people a hard time.

If you've reformatted, I'd put an infection down towards the BOTTOM of the list of possibilities.

Perhaps when you reformatted, not all drivers were installed properly.
Go to the HP/Compaq site and try getting the latest video driver.
Also...right-click on My Computer and go to Properties. Click on the Hardware tab and then Device Manager. Any yellow exclaimation points or question marks?

Solve : program not responding?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me here. I have spent about 2 hours working on a document using office word. The file is actually on the server. Luckily i saved some along the way. But there are a lot more that i haven't saved since then. I can't afford to lose them. I know i should've saved it more often. For now, i'm leaving it there (not responding) until i found a way to save my work before killing it. I have plugged out the network cable hoping that it would prompt me for network connection.

Strange thing is that i can still use the machine to do other work. It's just the word document that's NOT responding. What should i do now?

Any ideas?

Thank you in advanceQuote from: associates on May 20, 2007, 11:45:50 PM

You do not say which version of Word you are using, but by reading these articles thoroughly there is a good chance you can recover at least some of your work.

I think you may as well kill it off, since it will no longer respond to key presses and/or mouse clicks, and the temp files you need to deal with will be locked until you do so.

You may only have lost the 10 minutes work you did since it locked up, but you need to keep a cool head and make yourself thoroughly aware of what to do.

For the future, check that Word's "Autosave" settings are appropriate for your needs, and possibly investigate why this happened.

Read the articles thoroughly.

Office Gone Wild? You May Not Have Lost That File After All

"I was just about to save my report in Word when we got that power spike."

Like Excel, Word provides an AutoRecover feature. Word has included this feature for longer than Excel has, meaning you can recover files from Word 6.x through Word 2003.

Word will place AutoRecover files in a computer’s temp directory. (If you don’t know where this is, the fastest method to find out is to open up Command Prompt and run the command SET TEMP.) AUTO-saved files have the extension .asd, should you ever have a need to search for them by extension. From Word 97 to Word 2003, the file name will be "AutoRecovery save of document name.asd". For Word 6.x and Word 7.x, it will be ~Wraxxxx.asd, where xxxx is a random number.

Quote
How to recover a lost file in Word 2007 or in Word 2003

Here is a quote from http://www.amset.info/tips/office-recovery.asp

Quote
Recovery of MS Office Files from Temp Files

Microsoft Office has extensive AutoSave and Auto Recovery options that allow you to rescue your work in the event that it is lost due to a power failure, system crash or plain human error. However many people don't know how to use these features or that they even exist.

Even if you don't have these features enabled, you can sometimes recover data from the various temporary files that are created by Office while you are working on the document.

Microsoft have changed the way AutoSave and Auto Recover works in different versions of Office. Therefore you may want to experiment before you rely on this information.

Finding the Temporary Files

When a NEW file is started a temporary file is created. This can be either in the windows temp directory, in "C:\ Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft". If the file is stored on a network drive then it will be temporarily created there.

This temporary file will have a few different letters after the tilde (or squiggly line “ ~”) . These are good ones to look for to find some lost info:

Word

If you are looking for files used by word, then the FOLLOWING file types should be searched for, where "xxxx" is a number.

* A word document file will look like ~wrdxxxx.tmp
* A temp document file will look like ~wrfxxxx.tmp
* An auto recovery file will look like ~wraxxxx.tmp
* An auto recovery file that is complete will have the extension of .wbk.

The default auto save time for word documents is 10 minutes. You can control this time in Options under the "Save" tab. The auto save files are PLACED in one of the following two locations, which is where you should look to recover the data.

1. "C:\ Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word".
2. "C:\ Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp"

When you have found a file that looks like it might contain data, you may want to open it in notepad instead of trying to get Word to reassemble it. The easiest way to do this is to open Notepad from the start menu then drag and drop the file in to it. The file will then be opened so that you can view the contents.

If the document was open when the system failed (power failure or crash) then you could try just opening Word again (not the document, just Word itself from the start menu). Word will then try to recover the lost document.

Solve : Hidden Files??

Answer»

Hi, i have a laptop with 70GB of storage space on it, but when i LOOK at all the folders in turn to see how big they are it only comes up with about 30GB of actual files. is there a way i can look to see what space is actually being used by what?

My laptop is a IBM Thinkpad T60 running Xp Pro - I know there is a hidden rescue partition and this might be where my extra space is going but 40GB?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.Your post doesn't make much sense. You have a 70 Gig HD and you have 30 Gig of files on it. Is that right? So, what exactly is the question?

If you go to My Computer, how much free space is on your HD? If you right click on the drive and select Properties, what do you see? This Question doesn't really make anying sense, Can you repharse it pleaseThat response doesn't make any sense. Remember to feed the Parrot's....The enviornment is counting on you.Polly want a repharse?appology for the poor wording.

When i check the properties of C:\ says used 68.4GB out of 70GB but when i check the size of every folder in the directory it only represents about 30GB of actual storage space. I can't understand where the remaining 40GBs has gone. You also have hidden system files, swap files, an unknown amount for the hidden partition, etc. I think properties message is correct. Malware can also replicate files needlessly. What are you using for protection? You may also want to USE CCleaner to clear up the debris. The 30GB stated inclues about 3GB for Hyberfile.sys and the swapfile.

i've used crap cleaner and it says i've got 300MB of stuff but thats okay.

If my laptop is backing up my hard disk for future retrieval - where will the data be STORED?Well you didn't answer the questions, did you?

The recovery partition, if present only holds the OPERATING system, etc. as when the computer was new. It doesn't continue to grow and add things you have loaded.Don't forget that System Restore takes up a decent chunk of space! And so do the Windows hotfixes (ALTHOUGH not as big of a chunk).

Solve : had virus, reinstalled windows in dif directory?

Answer»

I recently had a bad virus, i tried to remove it, but that did not WORK. all the programs i had tried did not get RID of it enough that it didnt come back. so i try prevx1 and it starts going all crazy, then reboots by itself. after the reboot, it gives me the bsod for about 2 milliseconds then restarts. i couldnt figure out what was wrong so i decided to just reinstall windows until i could back up my files, then reformat the drive. So i reinstalled it to a directory called window2 and everything is working fine, except that all my programs are not in the start menu anymore. i re-ran super anti spyware and i believe it removed all the viruses. now my question is, how do i either transfer all my stuff to the NEW windows install or remove my new install if the first one is working now (havnt checked yet) is there any other suggestions? And superantispyware gets viruses? Do you have a real virus scanner?ya it found like 45 instances of smanager, fake svchost, and some other stuff. i used to use mcafee because its free with aol but it sucks so ive been using CA. it caught the virus and said it deleted it but it didnt. should i try logging back on to the original install and see if its fine? if its not how do i transfer my stuff and delete it?also on my new install it says that i have limited or no connectivity. is it something from the old install doing this?Backup your data to a USB or to optical disks and format that puppy and reinstall. It would be easier and QUICKER.

Solve : Bypass Admin's lock on Program Installation?

Answer»

I want to install the Xvid codec on my PC so I can watch my TV shows (not porn, I actually have morals) on my PC, but my PC's admin has windows XP set so that only he can install programs/etc. I was wondering if there was a way to bypass this so that I may install the codec.

I FULLY understand if it's against the rules or anything to ask this, so if it is, then nevermind.

[EDIT] Also, I have the DivX player INSTALLED on my computer, and I know it hasn't been locked down by the admin, but it just keeps saying "DivX PLayer has encoutered a problem and must shut down" whenever I try to start it up.You call it "my" PC, but it sounds like it is really your school's PC or your employer's PC, or even if not I expect there is a good reason why you are not allowed to interfere with settings, like for example you are eleven years old.
It's our family's PC, my dad's the admin, and I'm 15. My dad only locks program instalation because he's paranoid about spyware and the like. So can you help in this matter, or is it forbidden?Well, you COULD just ask your dad to lower the settings for an hour so you can download the file...

If there was a way to bypass admin settings, school computers wouldn't be safe. I think that you'd have to be a professional hacker to have a chance of doing this.

Overall, the answer is no.Quote from: Toasty64 on May 21, 2007, 03:44:34 AM

Well, your dad sounds like a sensible guy, not "paranoid" at all. If many of the posters on here were sensible like your dad, they wouldn't have the problems that they do. Probably he will agree to let you do the installation if you ask him nicely.

Maybe you should try to get a saturday job and/or beg for bits and peices and build yourself a PC out of unwanted components? Then you can be your own admin.

Use that PC as little as possible, ideally just to download and install these programs.
Even better, get them on a flash drive from another PC and install them from there.

Seems to me it's not really going to WORK for him because it is designed to compare to two documents, identify differences, and merge them without any duplication of content. And, that's not what he wants to do. But, I'm not very familiar with that tool, so I could be wrong.1. Open document 1 and document 2 in Word ( 1 & 2 refer to the order you want them incombined doc)

2. Go to document 2. Edit - Select All - Copy

3. Go to the end of document 1. Edit - paste. Tidy up.

4. Save as document 3
contrex, I suggested copy and paste back in reply #2. He said that doesn't work for certain reasons.I'm not sure if this would work with Rocken's documents but you could try opening document 1 and then insert file (Document 2).

Solve : Task Bar Problems?

Answer»

I have just got two new, to me, PC's, both with XP professional but two different CD's, ONE for the Dell and one for the Compaq.

The Dell SYSTEM works perfectly, my applications when I run them appear in the task BAR at the BOTTOM next to the quick launch items, and stay there when I minimise them.

On the Compaq system I can not get the applications to show in the taskbar unless I switch off the quick launch toolbar and in adition I can not see all the items that are in the right hand corner of the task bar, I have to unlock it and expand it upwards to see them all.

Presumably I am doing something stupid but would appreciate some advice.

Solve : Deleting partitions/reallocating free space?

Answer»

I am USING windows ME... the hard drive was partitioned into 5 partitions.(Not by me)
the OS and all programs etc. are on C drive(partition)..D,E,F,G are all 1.99 GB each and empty.I used fdisk to delete F and G partition just to see if it would reallocate the space to the C drive and it did not, so i stopped. The F and G partitions are deleted and I lost the 1.99 GB each had. How to I recover the 1.99 GB F and G had and reallocate it to the C drive??. ALSO how do I delete D and E partitions and reallocate the 1.99 GB those partitions each have to the C partition?.. thanks for you help... put your windows cd in delete the smaller partitions and then create one with the free space you just got back..Or if you're about due for a clean install wipe all the partitions and make it one drive...remember to set it as active so it's bootable.
FDisk will do all this ...no need for any third party application. And unless you use some third party software that is the ONLY way to get one big drive, unless repartitioning the ENTIRE drive as PATIO said.WAIT! STOP! dO YOU HAVE A BACKUP? When you delete a partition you may lose data. It depends on a number of things that you would not see with most partition software. If you value the data don't try to change the partitions. If the data has no value, just start from zero and do the whole disk with a new install.

AlliWhat operating system? Is it still under warranty? Did you contact Dell?

All of their computers up to XP CAME with either a Windows CD to reinstall or a restore CD, or a HIDDEN partition to revert back to factory installed settings. Are you saying you have none of these options?GX1_MAN,
COMPUTER IS S WINBDOWS XP PRO. SP 2002. It came with no cd, all the manual said that if u have problem u need to Resore back to an earlier date or u go to 'PC RESTORE BY SYMANTEC. You press ctrl and f11 to restore ur system to when u purchased it. i tried to do that, but it wont work either. it wont get in there.
They told me i had no Warranty, because i had purchased it out of the USA.
Thanks for ur help. any other tip.

Rascalligatorman,

That type of restore will take that machine back to Day One the way it was shipped.
You will lose any other programs you have installed since then plus ALL your data so i don't think that's what you want to do at this point.

The safest method right now would be to remove the drive and put it into a known working machine with a burner and hook it up as a slave drive so you can retrieve/burn your important files to CD/DVD.

At that point you can run the recovery software. Travel to the manuf. site for explicit instructions on this procedure...collegues,
Just to inform u all that i got a fix. The following day i decided to disconnect the usb printer cable from the cpu, and boot up and that was it. easy fix.
I wish that every fix would be easy as this one . go to sleep WAKE up in the morning and that's it.
Thanks to all those who assisted me.
