Answer» I recently had to reinstall MS server 2K on my server. Before doing so, my pc could connect to the shared folders on my server just fine. After the reinstall, I cant connect anymore. When I try, a login prompt appears, asking for an admin password. When I type in the admin password I use on my server, it keeps loading the login prompt, not recognizing the passowrd. Solve : Computer freezes when I start MS Word? |
|
Answer» EXCELLENT suggestions by soybean...this will also improve things. As far as space is concerned i would consider adding another HDD to that machine as the pricing right now is pretty reasonable... And or consider getting a DVD burner to store data...they can be had now from newegg for about 40 bucks shipped. Defrag is set to run once a week. I'm going to try Ccleaner and suggest that she adds an extra HDD because the CD burner is an old one and will only burn to CD-R's. A new HDD to run her machine and the old one for backup storage. ThanksJust remember that ALL hard drives fail eventually, so if important data is important, just a hard drive is not the solution. The MS Word saga continues. She called me this morning to tell me that she can open Word, gets an error message and it closes. I found 3 normal.dot files; two which were created when she started having trouble and one when I tested it. Deleted the files and it RUNNING again. What's HAPPENING here? I tried Ccleaner and added 60 megs of free HDD space. The only thing that she has been doing differently is to save her mail messages as .txt file, bringing them into Word and converting them to .doc files. Oh yes, GX1 Man, I was thinking about the problem of storage during my jog this morning and I've come to the conclusion there is no foolproof WAY to save your data. Disks, HDD and any other storage method are doomed to failure or obsolesence. All we can hope for is that the information is protected for as long as we need it. More than 1 location is best. A spare hard drive is good AND an OPTICAL drive backup. That's what I do. I have two HDD and I back up each one to the other therefore I'm protected if one fails. If both fail at the same time, I'm toast.Could someone please explain exactly what the normal.dot file is? Is it the default template or something? Just change the extension. Everything else I read about this problem was telling me to delete the file so I guess the lesson here is not to believe everything you find on the net. When it's deleted it's automatically recreated on the next restart...Yep, it can be deleted. Just keep in mind that if you've customized any toolbars or gone into Tools, Options, and changed preferences from default settings, you'll lose those things when you delete Normal.dot and allow Word to create a new one. I'm not sure about macros; you might lose them, too.Quote from: Zylstra on May 09, 2007, 06:21:33 PMHuhCould someone please explain exactly what the normal.dot file is?Yes, it's the default template for new/blank Word documents. Solve : Boot problems and Repair Installation not working?? |
|
Answer» Hi, In the BIOS settings, the boot order is hard-drive, cd-rom, then floppy (I have also tried changing the order). I first inserted a floppy boot disk, but the following message occurred, Completely unrelated, faulty installation on your bootable diskette. Quote I am having a frustrated time at trying to get my PC (Windows XP with Service Pack 2) booting up. Having booted up the day before, I suddenly got the following error after the dell splash screen, This would lead me to believe you're trying to boot from diskette drives only. Is your HDD still detected in the BIOS? Yes, my HDD is detected in my BIOS. I opened up the case to make sure the cables and connectors were not loose, and they are fine.Quote from: delluser07 on May 04, 2007, 05:56:44 AM Yes, my HDD is detected in my BIOS. I opened up the case to make sure the cables and connectors were not losse, and they are fine. is there a diskette in the floppydrive? this would explain why it refused to boot, cause bios in most cases are set to boot from floppy first, by default. No, there is no floppy disk in the drive. I tried the floppy boot disk I had, which is where I got the other error about the "Bad or missing command interpreter".Quote from: delluser07 on May 04, 2007, 06:04:44 AM No, there is no floppy disk in the drive. I tried the floppy boot disk I had, which is where I got the other error about the "Bad or missing command interpreter". reset your bios chip USING jumpers, unplug the floppy drive ... i remember having problems somewhat the same a long time ago, but i cant remember how i solved it.. What do you mean by "reset your bios chip using jumpers"? Just load the default values, no need to do that with the jumpers. You should diagnose your HDD using software provided by the HDD manufacturer. I have actually tried to "Load Default Setup" in the BIOS but that didn't work either. I'll try to diagnose my hard drive, I'm assuming the software is loaded onto a floppy and I insert it when I start my PC up. Are there any other possible solutions? I won't have access to the internet until NEXT Tuesday, so I would like to try as many things as possible before then.We don't have enough information, but if you're eager to get the problem solved or just short of time I'd do the following: 1. Hook up the HDD as a slave in another PC and copy all the files you want back-upped to that machine 2. Diagnose the HDD to see if it is failing 3. If it isn't, reformat and reinstall 4. If it is, buy a new HDD. Notes; 1. Scan the HDD for viruses when hooking it up to the other PC to see if that could possibly be the problem 2. Install AVG Free right after you reinstalled Windows. Just a reminder; this is one possible solution, there are more but since you're not going to be here I'd stick to that plan as it's bound to solve your problem and make sure your files remain SAFE. If they can still be salvaged. As for your diagnostic diskette; yes, you need a bootable 1.44MB diskette. You can find the diagnostic software hereOK, I'll give it a go, thanks. I'll let you know what happens.Unfortunately, it looks my hard disk is damaged. I added it to my friend's computer but the hard drive couldn't even load. It keeps on clicking, trying to boot up. And as mentioned before, when I get to the reinstall screen, it displays "setup cannot access this disk". When I press Install from here, I get the blue screen of death . Any other possible solutions? There is data that needs to be recovered. One thing I've tried in the past..and it is hit-and-miss if it works. Put the drive in the freezer (that's right, the freezer) and let it set for a few hours. Pull it out and slave it again. Otherwise, you will need to look into a data recovery company to retrieve your data. And they're not cheap. Alan <>< A freezer !!!!!:o I've never heard of that one before. Why should that work? I'll give it a go anyway in the next couple of days. I'm assuming it won't damage a thing. Just a quick note, the BIOS does recognize the hard drive, just can't read from it. In terms of data recovery, isn't there any software on the internet that could do the job?Not if the drive is making the "click of Death" and not spinning up properly.... If you try Alan's method be prepared ahead of time to copy/image or back up the drive. Sometimes you will have as little as 3 or 4 minutes to work with. |

Answer» Ok, details are: So, question is, can I take out the hard drive and install it in another machine where the zipdrive works, to secure personal data, or (I'm not too hopeful here) can I rebuild the system without losing personal data files? You should be able to take out the hard drive and install it as a second drive on another computer. If you want to boot to your drive, it may work as long as the other computer has similar hardware as the original computer, and there are no hard or soft errors on your hard drive.Windows ME has a system restore capability as well. http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/tips/winme/tswinme/system_restore.htm Perhaps you could restore to a point before this and not have to move any hard drives? |

Solve : Spinrite recovery?? |

Answer» Most likely to a folder it creates....the best spot for this would be another partition/drive. Watch the video:Quote from: delluser07 on May 17, 2007, 08:43:25 AM I couldn't find their email address either to ask. Quote from: patio on May 17, 2007, 04:46:32 PM Most likely to a folder it creates....the best spot for this would be another partition/drive. There is only 1 partition for the drive of 60gb. I have run the demo for GetDataBack and it seems to be finding a lot of files from previous partitions, so hopefully I can recover as much as possible.http://www.grc.com/cs/licenseinfo.htm There is the money back guarantee and an e-mail address.OK, Thanks.Well I got really lucky as GetDataBack recovered most of the important files I had on the deleted partitions. As the 160gb hard drive itself is in good condition, it currently has a 10gb partition with 140gb unallocated space. As I have BACKED up my recovered data to a different drive, would there be a problem if I was to delete this 10gb partition and recreate and format a new 100gb partition using Disk Management. My current C: drive is the drive I have backed up data to but is very slow, and the 160gb drive is set as a slave. If you have backups of everything you need from the 160 then delete all partitions and set new ones that are more manageable such as 80/80 or 40/120 or whatever... Make sure to make the first partition active and if it's going to run XP 20G should be a bare minimum... Once done with that then use the 160 drive manuf. utilitities to "clone" the other drive to the first partition of the 160... Then remove the master/OLD drive and set the 160 as master... You will now be booting to an exact replica of your old C: drive but with a slight performance boost since the 160 is probably a tad faster. You can then after testing everything WORKS correctly you can format the old drive and use it as a slave storage drive. And I would definitely check both drives with the free diagnostics at the appropriate drive maker's site. Thanks for the help! |

Solve : Windows Explorer Problem. Help.? |
|
Answer» Okay this is gonna be kinda long so stay with me on this one. Lately I had problems connecting to the internet which has obviously been solved. The problem had been with clearing the DNS cache and after trying basic setting alterations and system restore in safe mode. Nothing worked. So I decided to try and reinstall the modem driver which would hopefully restore the required files and settings to allow internet access. This seemingly worked at correcting the fault in the network connection. But I was LEFT with a problem with WINDOWS explorer that I have recently DISCOVERED. Every time I attemp to right click or delete any file or folder it freezes and comes up with the error report. After I send or don't send the error report the window closes and explorer.exe reboots. This happens everytime and is a big problem. Please help. |

Solve : Computer keeps restarting - really desparate? |
|
Answer» Hello everyone, sorry if this is in the wrong place but I really need help. I think you and others on this forum are worth more than all of PC Worlds staff put together. That's not saying much. Lol! I know, What I meant to say was that this forum and the people who contribute are brilliant beyond words! The staff at UK PC World are trained to NOT tell you what is wrong, even if they know bloody well what is the matter with your PC. They have to say, "Bring it in for a £40 health check". They face disciplinary action or the sack if they go against that. They don't mind, they're all muppets anyway. I gathered.... By the way, I have managed to save all the documents I wanted. Is there any way of using ubuntu to get my PC going again without having to wipe the hard drive and then reinstall everything? I've tried running antivirus programs on it, but ubuntu won't have it. I'm not very computer literate in these matters, so apologies if I seem to be asking a rather silly questions. Thanks again. There is an option of a Repair Install of XP provided you have an MS XP CD and not an OEM restore disk... I suggest reading through it to become familiar with the procedure and printing out a copy for reference before you start... If done properly you will be back booting to XP with all your programs and data INTACT...Thanks for the help again. I eventually decided to wipe the hard drive and simply re-install. Worked for the better as there were a few things on there that I didn't want, so it is a bit of a forced spring clean. Thanks for all teh help again. A good format and reinstall will solve all Windows problems....for a while. I would still seriously consider investing in a new PSU... It's amazing to me that it's probably one of the most important components in a well running machine and everyone ignores it til it's too late. But that's just me... |

Solve : Double installation XP? |

Answer» Wenn I made a new installation of XP on my HD, I erroneously didn't install it over the old one, but made a second installation on the same partition. On starting my computer I am asked which copy of XP I want to use. I tried to remove the first installation, but found no possibillity. Can anyone help me?You can't have two xp installations on the same partition. It's possible that you MIGHT have one installation, but the boot.ini file has an extra entry in it pointing to the same installation. You can't have two xp installations on the same partition. It's possible that you might have one installation, but the boot.ini file has an extra entry in it pointing to the same installation. Oh brother..... Quote from: GX1_Man on May 17, 2007, 05:23:05 PM Oh brother..... Indeed something wrong? The point is you said "you can't do this, but if you did...." You can do this, and there are more ways to solve it than what you posted.I made the suggestion of seeing if they were different installations because it is also possible that the original poster looked at their setup wrong and they actually do have xp installed on two different partitions. If each of the entries in boot.ini went to a different installation, then they would obviously have it installed two times, on different partitions. Then they would need to know which entry to delete and which partition to format. Are you saying that you can install xp multiple times on one partition? Also, I am by no means a compendium of all windows information as you seem to be. Forgive me for encroaching on your domain.Quote from: michaewlewis on May 19, 2007, 08:59:57 PM Also, I am by no means a compendium of all windows information as you seem to be. Forgive me for encroaching on your domain. Let's say I would prefer no information included in a post (or no post) rather than wrong information, which does the original poster no GOOD at all, and ties us up with having to CORRECT it. So correct me, I'm fine with that. I'm sure the original poster is fine with that. What is really useless in a post is for a user to make blank stares and hinting that there is something wrong with someone else's information and not offering the correct information. btw, I would love to know what additional information you have about the original topic. Actually, I wasn't hinting. I told you straight up. As the original poster has apparently been abducted by aliens, I would suggest to him that the perfect and foolproof action would be to format the drive and install fresh, just one time. (You can also edit the boot. ini file, and delete the extra installation if it truly is in another DIRECTORY.) As we do not know exactly what he did is his mishap it would be hard to advise him further. As he did this, we know that he can install an operating system, so let's try again the right way. actually, i just posted another THREAD about this. i got a virus, bsod, comp wouldnt start. so i decided to see if installing windows again would work. the installer told me that i already had xp on my system, so i just chose to install it to a directory named windows2. now when i boot up it gives me the choices: win xp win xp worked for me since all i wanted was to get my pictures and other files backed up before formatting and starting all over. so ya...my pc friend, you have to reinstall XP, but this time delete the partitiion and create another one making it 4000 mb...have funif you want juast a single os w/o erasing the other, try to go to the properties of My Computer, advnced tab, startup and recovery settings then uncheck the list of os.d12o40; he already has 2 installs of XP...are you suggesting a third ? ? jaydawg; he is looking to remove one install...why re-install ? ? steelfaith; this will only remove the listing of one of the OS's and not accomplish much... This thread is accomplishing nothing either since he has not returned. |

Windows is its own GUI. Graphical User Interface. Unlike Linux where X-Windows runs on top of command line OS, with different GUIs, Gnome, KDE NextStep etc. Windows is the OS. Windows is the GUI. Simple as really...On Linux you can only choose from gnome or KDE, on Windows you can install curtains, DRAPES, Venetian BLINDS... Just go to your local Linens 'n Things. B. |

Solve : Isass.exe PROBLEM? |
|
Answer» my comp will get to windows start up PAGE and then display this.. dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe /a h > result1.txt Open/run search.bat and it will produce two Notepad files (result1 and result2). Copy the contents of each file and paste them here. This METHOD isn't surefire, but it searches for isass in its most common location. You should, of course, run a virus scan also. This is why a lack of info especially in an infection topic can set things in motion down many paths...follow CBMatts ADVICE and the suggestions on system specs and more specifics etc....... |

Quote from: GX1_Man on May 19, 2007, 12:59:47 PM www.bootdisk.com Okay, I found my Win98 Boot disk. I put it in the floopy and set the startup mode to "removable drive"( hope that was right) , but nothing happened but a continual curser when it finally booted up. I found a "Boot Rescue Diskette for laptops and PC's loads your CD ROM Drive for MS Windows Installations. I booted with that, and then put the WIN 98 CD in to try and install Win98.( I was told that if I installed 98, it would automatically do away with the partially installed XP....) The instructions were to put in the WIN98CD and type in R:\i386\WINNT.EXE.. and it keeps SAYING "R drive has not finished reading... abort, retry, fail? probably doesn't make any sense, but as I said, I am a learn'n! Solve : program not responding? |
|
Answer» Hi, For now, i'm leaving it there (not responding) until i found a way to save my work before killing it.It's just the word document that's NOT responding. What should i do now? You do not say which version of Word you are using, but by reading these articles thoroughly there is a good chance you can recover at least some of your work. I think you may as well kill it off, since it will no longer respond to key presses and/or mouse clicks, and the temp files you need to deal with will be locked until you do so. You may only have lost the 10 minutes work you did since it locked up, but you need to keep a cool head and make yourself thoroughly aware of what to do. For the future, check that Word's "Autosave" settings are appropriate for your needs, and possibly investigate why this happened. Read the articles thoroughly. Solve : had virus, reinstalled windows in dif directory? |
|
Answer» I recently had a bad virus, i tried to remove it, but that did not WORK. all the programs i had tried did not get RID of it enough that it didnt come back. so i try prevx1 and it starts going all crazy, then reboots by itself. after the reboot, it gives me the bsod for about 2 milliseconds then restarts. i couldnt figure out what was wrong so i decided to just reinstall windows until i could back up my files, then reformat the drive. So i reinstalled it to a directory called window2 and everything is working fine, except that all my programs are not in the start menu anymore. i re-ran super anti spyware and i believe it removed all the viruses. now my question is, how do i either transfer all my stuff to the NEW windows install or remove my new install if the first one is working now (havnt checked yet) is there any other suggestions? And superantispyware gets viruses? Do you have a real virus scanner?ya it found like 45 instances of smanager, fake svchost, and some other stuff. i used to use mcafee because its free with aol but it sucks so ive been using CA. it caught the virus and said it deleted it but it didnt. should i try logging back on to the original install and see if its fine? if its not how do i transfer my stuff and delete it?also on my new install it says that i have limited or no connectivity. is it something from the old install doing this?Backup your data to a USB or to optical disks and format that puppy and reinstall. It would be easier and QUICKER. |

Solve : Bypass Admin's lock on Program Installation? |
|
Answer» I want to install the Xvid codec on my PC so I can watch my TV shows (not porn, I actually have morals) on my PC, but my PC's admin has windows XP set so that only he can install programs/etc. I was wondering if there was a way to bypass this so that I may install the codec. It's our family's PC, my dad's the admin, and I'm 15. My dad only locks program instalation because he's paranoid about spyware and the like. So can you help in this matter, or is it forbidden? Well, your dad sounds like a sensible guy, not "paranoid" at all. If many of the posters on here were sensible like your dad, they wouldn't have the problems that they do. Probably he will agree to let you do the installation if you ask him nicely. Maybe you should try to get a saturday job and/or beg for bits and peices and build yourself a PC out of unwanted components? Then you can be your own admin. I'm saving up fro my own PC at the moment, but as for my dad being paranoid, there's more to it. If you knew the details, you'd side with me without question. D: But this little feature is particularly annoying when I want to download stuff like a Java JDK since I'm a self-taught web developer/programmer.Quote from: Toasty64 on May 21, 2007, 04:05:17 AM I'm saving up fro my own PC at the moment, but as for my dad being paranoid, there's more to it. As in especially weird, not just normal "teenager's dad" type weird, either. So I do understand. I just wish I could earn more money than $10 a week. One more year and I can get a real job. Just one more year...I know it seems like forever. Still, to pass the time there are ALWAYS girls... Invest 10.00 a week for 10 WEEKS and you'll be flying high, until you can do better.TryHere You can pick up and old keyboard ,mouse ,and monitor almost anywhere. I must add that is better than my computer and all is fine here. |

Solve : Recover deleted files? |
|
Answer» Hi Have you read the forum post at Recuva, lately ? Basically, they mean "don't download any files, install any programs, or make any changes". And let's try to not hijack this THREAD.I'm not trying to HJ this thread ! and I was talking about the sucess rate of Recuva, . .I don't think you commented on that ? I am trying to recover some files from a notebook that is not set up for internet connection, I can not believe what happened, there may have been a chance, (when I backed up the files onto a disc, during that Trojan episode, prior to restoring, that some how the corruption effected the disc) ? Anyway, I am looking for some lost files in the notebook, and some deleted from the Recycle Bin ? This isn't the first time !!!!!!!!!! But, . . I am beginning not to trust disc. Jp download helix http://www.e-fense.com/helix/ you can either boot up a linux recovery environment or run it in windows (without installing). Either way, you won't have to write anything to your hdd |
