Solve : XP Media Center Edition just started running slow?

Answer» I have a Compaq Presario SR1650NX With Windows XP 2002 Service Pack 3, Media Center Edition, 2500 GB Hard Drive, 1.0 GB Memory, AMD Athalon 64 Processor. My antivurs software is PC Tools.
I reformatted 3 months ago and it was running fine until 3 days ago. I have removed all unnecessary programs from start up and have run disk cleaner and defrag. All windows programs and Internet 7 are running VERY slow.

The System Information I PULLED up on this site shows that I need to UPDATE Flash, Quick Time and Windows Media player Plugins.

Would this be the reason the system is running so slowly? Do you need any additonal info to help me?

Thanks for anything you can do to help.
I would back up your data to an external HD or BURN it and then perform a clean install from the restore CD if you still have it. See if the system runs nice and fast when back to original factory build. Then perform updates and keep track of performance. You might find as I did that the jump from SP2 to SP3 is when you see a big dip in performance.

I ended up rebuilding mine and keeping it at SP2. ( Although running in SP2 mode, made this system vulnerable to hacks etc, so I never used it for banking etc.)

I had an Athlon 64 not that long ago and had to retire it because it was becoming painfully slow and unable to play the GAMES I wanted to play with it. I did get some better performance by installing an AGP Video Card into the available expansion slot so that of the 1GB Ram I had similar to yours 2x512mb sticks, that the onboard video would shut off and so the shared memory would go back to the system to use. But the 8x AGP GeForce 6200 with 256MB Video Ram only bought about another year of use out of the system until the game I play the most WoW with Cataclysm Expansion would crawl at 6 frames per second. My OS was XP Pro SP2 since SP3 brought the browser and system to a crawl at 1GB Ram. I also was using the microsoft security essentials antivirus which is free and not a resource hog like Norton and McAfee.

Also your HD size appears to be a typo... thinking maybe its 250GB and not 2.5 TB. My system I had a 300GB SATA drive in it, but it was the old SATA which is 1.5gbps instead of 3.0 gbps. The origian drive my Compaq Presario came with was 80GB IDE, but the motherboard had two SATA 1.5 connectors, so I upgraded for better performance.

I actually did the clean install when I reformatted on July 26th. I really didn't understand the rest of what you were saying other than the hard drive is 250GB got that right off the computer. I just don't understand why it suddenly slowed down after such a short time. Unless playing some games on facebook could cause this I would really like to find out what's causing the problem. The first thing I notice was you have 1 gig of RAM. On XP, that would suffice unless how heavy or simultaneous you open or use certain programs that the computer can handle. Slow could either be in hardware or software. Have you tried running safemode to check the difference? No I haven't tried safe mode yet. How difficult is it to add additional RAM? And how expensive is it?

Thanks!
Try safemode first. Is it slow just opening a particular or a single program only? Make sure you only run one antivirus, one firewall. Any other additional protection softwares installed?
I ran the scan disk and then started up in safe mode. It seems to be running faster now - not quite what it was before - but much better! Thank you so much for you help --

When I click on diagnose connection problems I go through the process of diagnostics, it gives this message. Windows cannot troubleshoot your network connection because an error has occurred. My computer is connecting to the router but Windows does not work.

This is quite a paradox...

Does your internet connection work with a direct wired connection to the router? I haven't tried that yet. What do you mean Windows does not work? Post information to your computer brand/model ,ISP modem and router. The computer is connecting to the internet because it shows that it is and there is excellent connection.
But when I click on internet, a message comes up that Internet Exloer cannot display the webpage. I clicked on dianose connection problems.
It shows Windows cannot troubleshoot your network connection because an error has occurred. Pleas try again.
Upon viewing dianostic log, first up is Gateway in red, last few sentences in that area are as follows
Automate repair: reset network connection .
Disabling the network adapter
Failed while disabling the network adapter
Failed with Error 0x800F020D: The class installer registry entry is invalid
Then the last box has HTTPError 12007 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: the server name or ADDRESS could not be resolved.
etc.

Computer info.
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 260
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
Dell Inspiron 6000
System type X86-based PC
Okay. That means you have a driver issue with your WiFi card; deducing this from Quote from: kathyljs on October 13, 2011, 09:32:45 AM
Disabling the network adapter
Failed while disabling the network adapter
Failed with Error 0x800F020D: The class installer registry entry is invalid
I would first go into Device Manager (START->Run->devmgmt.msc) to uninstall the driver for your WiFi card, like this:

If you have any client software that you use to manage your WiFi connection (i.e. Atheros Client, INTEL WiFi Link Client, etc.) please uninstall that also. Then reboot Windows. After rebooting Windows, download and reinstall the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website. You can download the drivers from another computer and copy them onto a flash drive, then install the drivers from the flash drive. Have you tried if a direct wired connection to the router works?

If you know your way around computers and are willing to tweak with the registry then you might want to give the link below a shot:
http://forums.techguy.org/networking/581692-repairing-network-adapter-matter.html?1318524817Well, I did that. And that didn't work.
So I ended up GOING to some one who works on computers, my brother. I was hoping I could find out the problem myself.
Thing is, some how some one put in a static IP address. Therefore my computer would not connect to windows...That makes no sense if the connection was rebuilt properly.

Solve : Adminstrator has prohibited acces to CD/DVDROM Drives?

Answer»

After owning my computer for several years, I recently received the "Subject" error message. I went to the "regedit.exe" but could not locate the "HKLM" file. I read to correct the subject problem, was to change the string value "allocatecdroms" and change value to "O"

Any help would be greatly appreciatedWe have no way of telling if this is your machine so we cannot assist with Admin rights...

I would think if you had it for years this would have come up long AGO...Thank for NOTHING ! The last advise I want to get is from a beginner !! When you become an "expert", then you can give me adviseNo problem...

Sorry i couldn't help this time.Hi

Is the cdrom detected in the Bios perhaps the reason the registry key isn't there is that windows hasn't detected the the cdrom. Also you could test the cdrom with a boot CD before suspecting windows security.

Solve : Firefox problem after using bookmarks restore?

Answer»

Hey,

So I imported some BOOKMARKS from my Laptop running Ubuntu OS (an html file). After doing this, everything was still working fine at this point. Later I decided I didn't need the bookmarks from Ubuntu, so I restored the bookmarks using a backup 'json' file I MADE on my XP prior to doing this. After the restore, I ran into a problem. When I GO to "show all bookmarks", nothing is there. Also, when I click on the star in the omnibar to bookmark a PAGE, it just flashes yellow but does not stay yellow, and does not bookmark the page. Also, my 'json' files seem to have disappeared!

A few QUICK notes:

I haven't lost my bookmarks
I am running firefox 7.01
No changes after disabling addons
I have CCleaner which I run often
Using different/older restore points does not fix anything

Solve : XP unable to soft boot?

Answer»

Hi,

I REINSTALLED XP on a laptop at work.

The problem I have is as follows

if I cold boot the laptop it will load up and log into windows without incident.

However, if I attempt to restart windows it will restart the OS as expected and then hang on the XP loading screen.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Thanks,

Bev.Boot to safe mode. Now try to restart. What happens?Hi Allan.

I started Windows in safe mode, restarted and it still hangs on the XP loading screen.

I just don't understand why it won't warm boot. If it was a hardware error, it wouldn't get past the POST after a cold boot.

I also ran the built-in memory and HDD diagnostics - both came back with no errors.I'm guessing it is a hardware or bios issue of some sort or it would reboot from safe mode (AND, it would get past that point in the boot process because no software has been loaded or called yet).Is there a BIOS setting along the lines of boot on keyboard prompt ? ?I have an almost exactly identical issue as yours with the Intel computer in my specs. The computer would certainly fail to restart, and it would hang at the Win 7 loading screen, followed by a BSOD which stated something like "An attempt to execute non-executable memory..." Memtest86+ for 10 passes turned up no errors. However, I noticed that when copying or downloading large files(1GB+), they would often get corrupted(can CHECK this from the MD5 sums.) Programs would often turn up errors like "Reinstalling the program is recommended because so-and-so.dll has become corrupted" and ZIP files would turn up CRC-32 errors. I finally discovered it was the new 2 GB RAM I had installed few days ago that was the issue. Gonna RMA the RAM first thing tomorrow.
I really find it odd that Memtest86+'s reliability has been called into question... 10 passes and no memory errors...One other thought - if there is no setting in bios and if you haven't made any hardware changes lately, you might want to replace the battery on the motherboard. I know - it doesn't make any sense to me either since you can cold boot - but on the other hand, what's the harm?Quote from: Allan on October 04, 2011, 10:07:22 AM

CMOS battery - CR2032; available at any drugstore or supermarket.I've checked all the drivers were up to date - no change.

Changed CMOS battery (conveniently placed under the keyboard) - no change.

I guess that just leaves the installation media. It was the installation media.

I used a XP Pro disk from home and did another clean install and it now works perfectly.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Solve : word 2000/windows XP, won't print properly?

Answer»

I am having difficulty printing Word documents as they seem to be printing lightly and only about 1/2 of the line of text as in it's cut off either the top or bottom all the way across the line or SKIPS LINES here and there. I can print everything else just fine such as web pages and PDF's and PowerPoint, emails, etc. I have a new ink cartridge in there and seems like there are no other issues other than with Word. Is there an easy FIX or do I have to try reinstalling the program software or what? The problem is, I am totally unaware as to where I put the CD, whoops. Just wondering if it is a registry error or incompatibility or something simple or common. Thanks for any help.

It was suggested I try a free word processing program and I tried Abiword and it printed the same way. If it's done it in more than ONE word processing app then chances are very good that it's the PRINTER that's at fault...Make and model of printer?

You don't need the CD. You can get the driver from the manufacturer's site.

Do a nozzle check first (check in printer maintenance options) and if necessary, do a head/nozzle cleaning (also in those options). Also do a head alignment (in the maintenance options too).

If none of those fixes it, reinstall the software. If that doesn't help, as Patio said, there's probably an issue with the printer.

Solve : Computer Monitor goes off?

Answer»

Ouch! It sure looks like a motherboard replacement is in your future. Some computer service locations can replace damaged capacitors but it becomes a factor of the costs to replace them (labour/parts) and the cost of another MB. You seem to not be intimidated by the innards of your computer. Do you intend to replace the MB yourself? Have you ever done this before? If i were in your shoes i would also want to compare and consider a full computer replacement as another alternative. Much more up to date computers are now available at quite low cost. So think about this before you leap. Many of your current components can be used with or in addition to the replacement computer. For instance the current HDD plus optical drives can probably be added to your "new" computer. All your external devices can also more than likely be used. My concern re the repair of the current MB would be what caused the capacitors to go bad? They may be but a symptom of other issues. You probably can find a replacement MB on E-Bay or the like but you sure would need to be careful there as there would need to be some guaranty from the vendor re it's working. Decision time! truenorthHeyy Back and yes Ouch!! I work on pc's alot. Family, friends and friends of friends and familys Pc's. mostly virus issues and reformatts..it a breeze to fix one for me most of the time.. sometimes i get stumped.. lol but i didnt see those compasators until i took out the memcards cause they are kindof hidden.. i should of known to look better. i have looked on EBAY.. i will prob buy another for 25 bucks and intstall myself and be done with it... and yess i have replaced motherboards myself..and\ everything else possible inside the a pc. simple simple yea i DONT know what could cause it to do that really.. not that good at it.. lol. hopefully a new one will fix the problem!! Patty\Hiya Truenorth!! Finally fixed the motherboard. i replaced the 2 bad capacitors.. it didnt come on. gave me beep error codes. so i had to think about that a bit and then i done like u told me and tried seein if it was the memory sticks. 2 of them arnt good.!!!! what in the world would make them go bad!??? but the pc is up and running!! if u can tell me how to know they would go bad like that let me know. and OH. when i tried the cmos battery.. it reset and it comes up i have no floppy and to click f1. i dont have a floppy. .. so do u know how to make it stop comin up? the simplest things seem to get me CONFUSED. lol thanks! PattyThere is an option to turn off floppy seek in the BIOS...yea maybe i done it wrong.. but when i did the pc wouldnt boot up windows!!i could of clicked the wrong thing. i will try it again!

Solve : Clean XP install - used to work, now it doesn't?

Answer»

Hi,

First of all, thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you to anyone who wants to contribute their thoughts. Now, the problem in more detail...

Summary:
Laptop shipped with Vista. Clean install of XP & drivers - all okay for over a year. XP became problematic, re-installed XP - same problems exist with clean install.

Prelude:
I have a Toshiba Satellite L30, which came with Vista installed. After some disappointment with Vista, I decided to "upgrade" to XP. The installation of XP went without a hiccup. Trying to find drivers for everything took some time, as Toshiba no longer distributes the drivers for the L30 model (at least not on the UK version of their website). I kept (and still have) copies of all of the drivers I eventually installed to get the laptop with XP working successfully, and all was well.

The Problem Begins:
I had been using this set-up for over a year, until recently and suddenly, the laptop became problematic (i.e. hanging at certain situations, being slow and generally unresponsive). I concluded that the laptop had probably lost power during installing Windows updates, or the update had problems and had become unstable. After trying various techniques to try and recover the system (system restore, chkdsk etc) with no success, I decided I would do a clean install of XP.

Get Your Head Scratching Fingers Ready:
Using the same XP CD I used for the first install, I begin to re-install XP. All goes well, until the installation reaches "Registering Components", where it hangs. Pressing the power button to restart the laptop re-initiates the installation and the installation completes through to the end (possibly because the installer has flagged whatever caused the hang to be skipped the second time around?). This behaviour is now repeatable every time I format the drive and install XP. Anyway, XP is now installed and boots up - but guess what? It's showing the exact same behaviour as before the clean install. It's hanging at the same things and being generally unresponsive. I continued to install all of the drivers I used the first time around, but still the same problem. (may be worth noting that safe mode doesn't exhibit any of this behaviour and works fine).

The Plot Thickens:
So now I'm thinking it's likely to be a hardware / firmware problem, as it's the exact same software set-up. In the course of spending a long time trying to figure it out, I get around to using the Toshiba recovery disk which re-installs Vista, and lo and behold, everything works fine, no problem with anything (well, except that it's Vista). I installed all the available Windows updates and updated all of the drivers, and then ghosted the hard disk so I can at least return to a working set-up relatively easily. Thinking that this procedure may have restored equilibrium to the hardware settings, I re-install XP, but it's still being problematic in the exact same way. I'm stumped.

What To Do Now:
Personally, I would rather use the laptop as an expensive paperweight than use it with Vista installed. I've ordered some RAM so that it will be capable of running Windows 7, but I still wouldn't really be content with that workaround. By far, XP would be the OS of choice, but I don't know what path to take next to get it working again.
I would love to hear your 2 cents. Thanks for reading the above, I know it was long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
IanYou can always use VirtualBox or VMWare Player to run a Virtual Machine of XP in Vista/7. I really don't understand why you need to stick with XP, which was developed in 2000 and which software and hardware companies are starting to drop support for. It was never optimized for multi-GPU configs, it does not support DX 11, etc. if you are thinking of GAMING, for example. Windows 7 is far better than Vista-optimized UI, better memory management, better UAC access, etc.

The fact that it works fine in Vista and not in XP is odd. Vista is a major memory hog when compared with XP...
It shouldn't be a hardware problem. It might be that you have a bad XP setup disc. Could you try resetting your CMOS and see what happens? I know of some COMPUTERS that have an "OS Install Mode" which limits the RAM to 256 MB and forces generic drivers. Your RAM should be fine if it works in Vista without a hitch-if you are really paranoid you could run Memtest86+ for 10 passes or so.Hi Transfusion, thanks for your reply.

Quote

You can always... ...run a Virtual Machine of XP in Vista/7
Granted, it's possible, but will mean more memory usage and less performance.

Quote
I really don't understand why you need to stick with XP
Gaming isn't really an issue with this machine. The software we develop at work is designed on XP, for XP, and although most of it is portable to Vista/7, it just MAKES it a lot easier to have XP too. Besides, the laptop is a fairly average spec and XP is lightweight compared to it's successors. I agree, it's soon becoming dead in the water, but for now it seems the best option.

Quote
It might be that you have a bad XP setup disc
It's the same disc that was used the first time that worked. I also tried with a different XP disc too, same problem.

Quote
Could you try resetting your CMOS and see what happens
Yes, good advice. I've tried that with no luck.

Quote
if you are really paranoid you could run Memtest86+
This I haven't tried yet. I got an e-mail earlier saying the RAM I ordered (in anticipation of moving to Windows 7) is out for dispatch today. I'll see what happens with XP when this arrives. I'll run Memtest86+ as you suggest on the current RAM anyway for sanity's sake.

I'll post an update whatever the results may be. In the MEANTIME, if you or anyone have any other ideas, they would be more than welcome.
Thanks.Memory was fine. Swapped out the 512mb it had with new 2GB RAM, still same problem. It's running Windows 7 fine though with the new RAM so I guess I'll stick with that. Sad to see XP go though, but I just couldn't figure it out. If anyone comes across this thread with the same problem, I hope you have better luck than me. Thanks to Transfusion for trying to help too.Quote
The software we develop at work is designed on XP, for XP,
Wonder how your employer gives you the hassle of not providing the right machine or system to work with. I did not see in your post of checking the status of your hard drive or using another one.

Solve : batch file to turn key scrambler on/off?

Answer»

Long story made short: I would love a batch file for quicker access to turn the key scrambler off.

Currently I must "go into Internet Explorer/Tools/Manage Add-ons/scroll down to the proper one, then disable, close", then close that IE window and open a new one to have it take effect.

It seems that I should be able to run a batch file which would accomplish everything within quote marks above. Batch files I can write, but how to get into IE that far ... I'm at a complete loss! Later I'll want one to turn the key scrambler back on, but that's only one word change from the first one.Could the be done will Auto-Key? Here is some information. Auto Hot Key is the current version. It is free. It records keystrokes that can be saved and played later. If you have a task the ALWAYS takes the same keystrokes, it will do the job. It sis even possible to skied it as a task and have it stat even whjen the user is not aware that it is TIME to o a certain thing.

AutoKey and AutoHotkey refer to the same thing. In this context.

Quote
AutoKey | Download AutoKey software for free ,,,
http://www.autohotkey.com/
AutoHotkey is a free, open-source utility for Windows. With it, you can:

Automate almost anything by sending keystrokes and mouse clicks. You can write a mouse or keyboard macro by hand or use the macro recorder.
Create HOTKEYS for keyboard, joystick, and mouse. Virtually any key, button, or combination can become a HOTKEY.
Expand abbreviations as you type them. For example, typing "btw" can automatically produce "by the way".
Create custom data-entry forms, user interfaces, and menu bars. See GUI for details.
Remap keys and buttons on your keyboard, joystick, and mouse.
Respond to signals from hand-held remote controls via the WinLIRC client script.
Run EXISTING AutoIt v2 scripts and enhance them with new capabilities.
Convert any script into an EXE file that can be run on computers that don't have AutoHotkey installed.
Getting started might be easier than you think. Check out the quick-start tutorial.
For a new Linux version: http://code.google.com/p/autokey/

It is a cool product. It can do more than just solve your current problem.
Truce, it is overkill. But why use a rock when a sledgehammer is nearby.

Solve : Remove multiOS menu from startup?

Remove multi OS menu from startup
Hi I have 2 different comps. Both are XP Pro. Both have got the same Boot.ini. as below.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP PROFESSIONAL" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

However if one starts OK, the other still offers that option of 2 (Wingows XP Pro... and Windows (default)).
If matters here is how I ended up having this issue. I mounted a new drive on that problematic computer and installed a new instance of XP there. Removed that DIVE later on, but as you may KNOW, after installing that new instance, Boot.ini was modified as below.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

As you can see above, although I've removed the second line, I still keep getting this annoyance.
Pardon me if this SOUNDS rude.
Just leave it alone until you know exactly how to fix it. As long and it does not interfere with use of the system. Just let it be.

I have played and played with BOOT.INI for years and have often FOUND my self with not being able to boot at all anger i 'fixed' it. Then I have to boot another OS to edit the BOOT.INI, which is a real pain trying to edit BOOT.INI from Linux.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

As you can see above, although I've removed the second line, I still keep getting this annoyance.

I have had this problem in the past- at boot there would be "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" and Windows(default). I got rid of the Windows(default) by editing my boot.ini to this:

Code: [Select][Boot Loader]
timeout=30
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optinYou could always do a "fixboot" or "fixmbr" from your XP setup CD with its Recovery Console.

Solve : shutdown problem xp pro?

Answer»

my PC is TAKEING so much time to shutdown plz help pc spec is 500 gb hd 2 gb ram os xp pro Here are some steps you can take to try to speed up Windows Shutdown. Before editing the registry, be sure to either create an image of your system partition or BACKUP the registry. If you don't know how, please ask.

1) Make sure "CLEAR pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000

Solve : Change Desktop Shortcut Text Color from White to Black??

Answer»

Anyone know how to change the Text Color of Shortcuts and Icons with Text Displayed under them from the default of White to say BLACK or any other color for that matter? I know that i can changethe background color of teh text box of teh iron, but that looks ugly and too primitive windows looking.

I have a background picture of my daughter playing outside and its awkward having my icons grouped around darker areas of the picture. Sure I could size the picture to only take up part of the screen instead of stretching. But I don't want to do that.

Been digging in advanced properties and searching google for others who may have found a solution for this, and some suggest installing some software like something called Iconoid, but I am hesitant to installing any DESKTOP tools as for I have never seen any that don't have cons to them.

Anyone ever used Iconoid or can suggest a better fix for this? Here is the link to Iconoid to check out: http://www.sillysot.com/Microsoft say there is no way to set a default colour for desktop icon text in Windows 7. The way it works is this: the icon font colour can be only be a grey scale value somewhere between pure white and pure black. Windows sets it depending on background brightness, defaulting to white unless that would not be clearly visible. Note that you have to log off and on again to see any changes. It does seem as if 3rd party software is the only way around this, but some people (like yourself) who don't fancy doing that, have contented themselves with either or both of: setting the font to be bold, and enabling drop SHADOWS. Iconoid works perfectly for changing the font color of your Desktop icons. Just tried it:
I have to say personally I don't like desktop icons; my own desktop is solid black in colour and has zero icons or gadgets. So this problem never affects me. I also really don't like software installers which go ahead without asking and put an icon on the desktop.

Salmon ... Interesting information. Wasn't aware of Windows setting the text color depending on background brightness.

And interesting that Transfusion got green when it should be grey scale? Thanks Transfusion for testing that software and reporting with screenshot at your own risk

Wonder how this software is overriding the text color? I also dug in the registry thinking that maybe a hex value may be associated with text color for icons etc, but didnt find anything yet. Maybe I will install this Iconoid to a virtual machine after taking a backup of the registry and then compare the original registry against the I am guessing altered registry with this software to see what key is being altered to change the text color. Guessing for the change to take and be permanent, it may be a hex value in registry maybe that can be altered when the option is OTHERWISE greyed out in options.Quote from: DaveLembke on October 08, 2011, 04:23:17 AM
And interesting that Transfusion got green when it should be grey scale?

Transfusion has green icon text because he is using Iconoid, which overrides the as-installed Windows 7 greyscale behaviour.

Something I have just realised is that when Windows computes the best shade of grey for the desktop icon font, it's not the wallpaper image (jpg or whatever) that it looks at, it's the underlying desktop colour. If you have an image set as wallpaper, you will never see this desktop colour, but its setting affects the desktop icon font colour. That is, set the colour to a very dark one, and you'll get a white icon font. Set the colour to a very light one, and you'll get a black icon font. Also if you enable drop shadows, these will be mid grey so you will pretty well always be able to see the text anyhow.

I don't think these 3rd party icon text colour changers work by modifying the registry because in unmodified Windows 7 the desktop icon font colour is not stored there (not everything is done via the registry). I believe they intercept a part of the Windows desktop icon painting code and substitute their own routines. Iconoid's web may offer the source code, I'll check this, but meantime a reading of the Iconoid version history suggests this. Of COURSE they may store their own settings in the registry (where else?) but you would not be able to uninstall the 3rd party application and still keep the modified font colour.

Yup. Iconoid 2.3.4 was the last version written in Visual Basic and the download includes the source.

Thanks I'll try that Rob.
Another alternative:

BCSearch

Note that it's "design goal" was quite the opposite of locate32. I was SICK and tired of all that indexing bullcrap that you have to go through just to search for files, and I found myself dropping to the prompt to do a dir /s to search for files in a specific directory. (note that windows 7 search has mitigated this somewhat). The idea of BCSearch (I believe I started a topic when I first set about writing it) was to be similar to the windows 98 "Find Files" DIALOG, but with more functionality.

hmm come to think of it it's about time I REWROTE it in C#...

Solve : Keyboard!?

When i press shift with numbers 2 and 3 i get (@) and (#) instead of the (") and the pound sign. I would put the pound sign down but because of this problem i
cant find it on the keyboard! The normal (@) key is replaced with the (") key....
Has anyone got any ideas on how i can change my keyboard back to how it should be, i got it given and I'm QUITE new to computers so im not to sure what to do, thanks.@ and # are the normal with 2 and 3 on a regular US English keyboard layout.

You will need to check in LANGUAGE and Regional Options for what layout your keyboard is using. Default for XP is usually US English (unless you're using a regional variant). Please post more information on the computer model/brand, Operating system you are using? This is correct. If it's the case that the layout has changed spontaneously, this may help: http://pomeroy.me/content/windows-keyboard-layout-has-changed-spontaneouslyUK layout

US layout

Something that may cause transatlantic confusion:

I believe many Americans call this character a "pound" sign or symbol (Brits call it a "hash" symbol):

A UK automated switchboard might say "To hear those options again, press hash on your phone keypad now"

Brits call this a "pound" symbol:

Thank you for that BIT of INSIGHT, ST. I wasn't familiar with the UK layout, but I see that what I said originally is likely the issue now.

Yep, we call it a pound sign. There's a rather odd story about how that came about, but it has to do with old typeset printers and not having a the "LB bar" (℔) symbol (seriously, that's what it was called). Somehow that became # and has been used since.

Solve : unwanted letters after installing parallel printer adapter?

Answer»

I have installed printer adapter card but if i print unwanted letters were printed ( [emailprotected],, CE, C @). first i installed the card in pci slot..2nd i installed driver..3rd connect the printer...visit DEVICE manager PCI ECP Parallel Port (LPT3)...change printer properties PORT to LPT3..any body can tell me how to fix this problem?thanks in advance..^_^It seems you have been here before. We can go faster if more information is on the first post. What make of computer. Laptop? Desktop? Why do you need an adapter card.

Why are you even using an old PP printer? Which model? Is this a special printer for POS application? What does the documentation say?

Most Desktops already have a Parrnell port, so it is unclear why you installed a PCI adapter. Did you mean PCMCIA adapter on a laptop?

The preferred METHOD is to use a USB to parallel adapter for a laptop. Also works good on Desktop, if needed.

Also, which OS are you using? It makes a difference. And you have to have the right driver for the printer.

Parallel printers have some special needs. One is you never discount the multi-pin cable while printing. Most often the printer can not reset from that kind of error. That is shy a USB adapter is preferred.
I'm using desktop my mobo is P5G41T-M LX and my printer is epson LX-300..mobo has no parallel port and printer has no usb adapter. I am using Windows xp prof. and MCS9865 driver for my parallel adapter card..i came to another site. and it seems like the driver was failed i don't know if its true i did email the moschip company and w8 for the driver. btw the driver cd that was provided when i purchased the parallel adapter was not FUNCTIONING thats why i downloaded the driver from the moschip web..thnx4 the help Geek-9pm any further advice? Here is a site that deals with these kind of issues.
http://www.printerhacks.com/how-to-connect-a-parallel-hp-printer-to-a-usb-only-computer/

Notice that they also recommend the USB to PP printer adapter. The list that have is for HP printers, but the concept applies to any of the standard PP printers made in the past few years.

The adapter they recommended is a USB on one end and the Centronics connector on the other end. The SELL for about $15 and provide a solution that does not require installation of any special software. Check and see which Centronics connector it has.

Besides Amazon, you can go to this site:
http://www.cablestogo.com/
Look for USB to parallel printer. Most printers use the large Centronics connector.

I thin k the most practical solution is to forget the PCI card. You have spent enough time on it and it should not be that hard to do. It should have worked the first time.

I have 3 external USB drives and 1 USB DVD drive as well as 3 HDD ATA drives with mucho disk space. Recently bought an 80 GB pata drive and installed it in an external case (EXT) and connected to USB.

In my WE I see all my drives but EXT. It was formatted and partitioned ok. Using the Device Manager & Computer MANAGEMENT-Disk Management aps I see the EXT as disk 3 and assigned the letter K: but it still doesn't show up in WE. I also use POWER Desk Pro 7 (PDP7) and it doesn't see EXT either.

I connected EXT with it's cable to my Laptop running Win 7 and EXT is displayed there in EF and PDP7.

I disconnected all the USB drives (3) and I see the 3 ATA drives but no EXT.

Solve : Dlls not found, WINSXS?

Answer»

For some reason, GDIPLUS as well as visual c++ RUNTIMES i.e, 2005, install their dynamic link libraries (dlls) in WINSXS. Perhaps they are suppose to. However, programs that require these dlls cannot assess them. For example, I had to copy GDIPLUS to the system or system32 (as these are in my environment path variable) folder so the program can assess the dll. Dependency walker also states that the dlls for the aforementioned cannot be FOUND, even though both GDIPLUS and Visual C++ 2005 Runtimes are installed. I don't understand why they are not working "out of the box". Does it have to do with security catalogs? I just have no idea, and have been dying to know why for a while. Re-installing improves nothing, and same goes for "trying" to register them.

How do i enable my WINDOWS installerIt should ALREADY be enabled.

Are you having a problem? What errors are you getting and what are you doing when you get the error?

The more INFORMATION the better

For windows installer to work, you must be running under an admin account; not limited user. The installer service must be enabled. If these two criteria are met, then the installer is broken and must be manually REMOVED GOOGLE for instructions from microsoft. Then install windows installer 4.5. Windows intaller has no dependencies; though dcom service should be enabled, as Windows Management Instrumentation, as BITS.

Solve : Internet related problem!?

Answer»

Hi, I'm not a newbie when it comes to computers and never asked for help before (well, a few times in the very beginning, I guess, when I just bought my first computer – but that's a long time ago!). Normally my family and friends are asking me for help when they have problems with their computers an I'm the one who solves them... But now I have an internet related problem with my PC and I am really stuck!

I like to solve chess problems and do so on a regular basis on http://www.chess.com. Since a couple of weeks HOWEVER I'm not able to solve them anymore! When I click on the diagram another page opens (which is absolutely normal) and on that page the chess problem should load – but it doesn't! The only thing I see is a tiny little square turning and turning and turning... and a message which is saying “loading”... but nothing happens!

Whichever browser I use the problem is still the same. Despite that I assume that this is NOT a problem on chess.com, and it can't be a browser related problem either. So there must be something wrong with my internet settings, but I can't figure it out. I also checked the Flash player settings but couldn't find anything unusual to me.

Any ideas?Hi! I myself you chess.com and i know exactly what you are talking about! To tell you the truth, I don't think it's a flash problem. chess.com doesn't use flash at all i know that for a fact so it wouldn't be something wrong with your flash. It actually sounds to me as if it's a problem with chess.com especially if the loading screen comes up. It almost sounds like a ddos attack but then I WOULD think the entire website would be blocked. Check your javascript settings to make sure they are enabled but other than that, log something with chess.com if that doesn't work.Have never used that site but in order to TRY and assist you i just used your link and the site opens with no problem. I was also able to access items within the site with no delays. So i tend to think the site is ok. Are you having any similar issues with other web sites? I am using Opera 11:50 by the way. Have you altered or added anything new to the computer coincident with this problem? truenorthMaybe you need to update your java if the site uses it.
Have you posted the problem at their FORUM? http://www.chess.com/forum/category/help-support?

To guard against people cloning Windows installs, Windows activation on versions including XP and after is tied to the hardware that the OS was installed on. This is done by generating a "hardware signature" from hardware items among these types:

Display Adapter
SCSI Adapter
IDE Adapter (effectively the motherboard)
Network Adapter (NIC) and its MAC Address
RAM Amount Range (i.e., 0-64mb, 64-128mb, etc.)
Processor Type
Processor Serial Number
Hard Drive Device
Hard Drive Volume Serial Number (VSN)
CD-ROM / CD-RW / DVD-ROM

If you make a significant hardware change to your computer, you will be notified and will have three days to activate your copy of Windows.

This is all public knowledge and has been out there on the Web for as long as Windows XP has been on sale. It may be tiresome, but nobody forced you to use Windows. It's got nothing to with "Big Brother" (or "Big Brotha", whoever he is.)

Solve : Looking for different opinions on my computer's lag?

Answer»

My relative is having a large amount of difficulty using my computer for everyday tasks, such as using the internet, receiving emails, and loading emails with more than just text such as advertisements from Home Depot.

She USES OUTLOOK 2007 for her email, and Internet Explorer 7 for internet purposes. She often finds that IE lags when Outlook is sending/receiving email. However, the lag does not seem to be limited to just that.

She THOUGHT upgrading to IE8 would fix some of these problems. However, some of the pages would not display after she had installed it, leading her back to IE7.

Scans have been run with both AVG and MalwareBytes, and the viruses that were on this computer have been disposed of and removed from their individual "vaults" for quarantining.

I have also defragged the computer a couple of times, the latest time as recently as two weeks ago.

This leaves me with no good answer as to why this is happening. Will the computer need to be upgraded, or is there something I could try that I have not yet? (I have heard things about the registry possibly having an effect, but I haven't played around with that yet).

Does anyone here have anything to recommend??

NOTE: This computer has a dual boot installed on it between Windows Vista (the C drive) and Windows XP (the F drive). Windows XP is the operating system I am having issues with.Is F: a physical HDD or a partition ? ?
Have you had her check her connection speeds lately ? ?

That PC should handle all her tasks with ease...The F drive is a partition which RUNS the Windows XP operating system she uses.. and the XP operating system is the one that the problem is occuring on.

The signal strength is reported as excellent going at 54 Mbps and I will try out speedtest.net in a second..

UPDATE: This was my third try on the site due to issues and mistakes the first two times, and although the site was the only site open on the computer, Internet Explorer was not the only program running (probably dosen't make a difference but just in case it does I said that).

The results were -
Ping: 10 ms
Download: 1.45 mbps
Upload: 0.36 mbpsWhat type of internet connection is it?Has this computer been doing this since she got it?? I imagine the problem started happening some time ago but it worked fine when she got it?You might try turning off hardware acceleration, that can cure a lot of problems such as yours. If it doesn't you can always go back and turn it on again.

Solve : XP Clean install?

Answer»

Hiya guys
I did a clean install of windows XP Home, now i have very slow internet response and sometimes pc seems to "stutter"a little, i followed the install instructions,i was wondering if there were any suggestions as i feel i have obviously missed something.
Athlon 64x2
AMD 4200+
2 GIG RAM
windows XP SP3

Probably not enough info,im not sure what to give, any help at all would be appreciated.
After installing XP did you install all drivers starting with the chipset driver?Yes i did, well to the best of my knowledge anyway,i have no yellow exclaimation marks against anything when i go into Device Manager
My driver disk says M2V VIA K8T890 Chipset Support,i down loaded all that was on it.Okay, that's good. How do you connect to the internet? Also, please describe the stuttering in detail.Internet is via a gateway modem as ADSL is not available here, it was never super quick, but what i have now is far slower than i remember dial up ever being.
i am connected via cable to the modem.
By stuttering i mean clicking on an icon will sometimes not respond, or may take a while, its only occasionally,i did this install only 5 DAYS AGO.could i have perhaps forgotten something in the setup, by the way i thought i would mention that my antivirus is "BITDEFENDER" which i am trying instead of Nortons.I've also checked in Internet Options to see if there is anything there that should be changed, problem is,i really dont know what im LOOKING for,i know this is kinda vague, but im at a total loss,as 6 days ago i did'nt have a problem.i downloaded updates from Windows Update,SP2 and SP3 took hours to load. Also emails seem to be fine.If you INSTALLED all drivers and there are no yellow or red symbols in device manager I don't think you forgot anything. Have you gone to Windows Update and installed all software updates (only software - do NOT install driver updates from Windows Update)?Ooopppps...i think i did install graphic driver updates for Nvidia as well as a couple of others,i thought it best to update everything,am i best to redo the clean install?? Also i run a genuine XP disc, and i first tried "repair" before the clean install.its gone 10pm here so i gotta get to bed,i'll check back tomorrow, and again, thank you for your time and any light you can shed upon my issues.
RogAssuming this is a desktop, drivers should be downloaded from the websites of the various hardware manufacturers, not from Windows Update.i might start again i think, only this time be a little more organised.

Solve : How to install XP OS on USB/Pen Drive??

Answer»

No one here ever stated it can't be done...of course it can...as BC illustrated above.

However due to Forum Rules and regulations all links for doing so have been removed.

This is not a case of "yes i found a way"...rather an adherence to what we do here.

Any questions for newer Members that aren't familiar with the Forum Rules can be addressed to myself or any of the Forum Moderators.

Thanx.

Just wanted to mention that USB for an OS to run on 1.1 or most likely 2.0 is "SLOW" and a real physical drive is MUCH faster. Also that if you needed say 100 hard drives for the cost of the pen drives, there should be no problems finding good used or new 20GB to 80GB IDE drives for the equivilant cost of say a 16GB pen drive that most vendors would love to get rid of since these days its 1TB or greater capacity drives that are stocked and anything smaller unless solid state is generally older stock that they will want to move now vs taking a loss later on.

If you shop around you can get them, be legal, and have much better performance which in turn will minimize loss of job productivity. You wouldnt want a bunch of employees sitting around with pen drives flashing and waiting, as would be the case with the OS, swap file, and user data etc all thru a slow USB connection.

http://www.pricewatch.com/gallery/hard_removable_drives/ide%20hard%20drive%2040gb/0

40GB drives linked above. And this vendor http://3btech.net/se4072rpm2mb.html has them for less than $17 USD each with free ground shipping.

I worked almost 7 years once for a small not-for-profit coop food store chain where money was tight, and hardware was fixed and run until it could no longer serve a productive purpose. I was always buying good used or new obsolete hardware to get by and save tens of thousands of dollars annually to the customer members who got their annual refunds based on how much they spent there (temporary store profits) minus operating expenses including infrastructure replacement & repair. So when I saved the store money it meant that in addition to getting a nice bonus for a job well done annually, the customers got more money as well put back into their pockets. An example of how tight we were, to squeeze out every invested penny out of hardware, we were putting old dinosour Pentium 75Mhz machines back into operation with maxed out Ram as workstations since they still operated correctly and were using them as thin-clients. As thin-clients all the computing was really happening at the server end, where we had a lower end Dual Xeon CPU Server that we bought second hand, and the Pentium 75Mhz systems were mainly acting as a means of displaying the users session and passing mouse and key strokes to the server.

The Thin-Client/Server setup was one of the best investments I was involved in there. I was also able to save them tons of money buying from Tiger Direct Refurbished Pentium 4 HP Desktops for less than $150 each with Windows XP Pro and 40GB drives. Going into my boss and showing him that we can have almost complete computers with Windows XP Pro OS bundled with them, just needing displays that we already had on hand from the older Pentium 75's, and getting it all for just $13 more than the price of buying an XP Pro OEM CD at $137, it was an instant approval and buy 30 of them at $144 each since they gave me better corporate pricing buying a large volume of systems. Its not every day that you can buy a computer excluding monitor for $150 with Windows XP Pro and warranty, although Tiger Direct CONTINUES to post them for sale on their website and they sell out quickly.

**Just decided to go take a peak at tiger direct and see if they still offer these and now they are less than $100 each... No, that will just leave you with an .iso file on the flash drive - but it certainly won't be bootable.Quote from: Allan on August 06, 2011, 05:15:23 AM

Yes. And in any case the question is about installing XP on a flash drive, not installing XP from one.

Solve : Slow Internet while sharing?

Answer»

Hello,

Their are three computers in my household, a mac book, and a custom built desktop, and a DELL desktop, and in the past we could run all three simultaneously with no problem what so ever. For the past few weeks, whenever someone turns on one of the other computers, the custom built desktop becomes extremely slow. I experience CONSTANT freezes, to the point where my browser wont load for a few minutes. The weird thing is, the other computer experiences no slowness. We haven't been doing anything out of the ordinary that would cause this, and once the other computer is shut off, it goes back to normal. The same thing happens with both the dell desktop and the mac book. The mac book is wireless, and the dell and custom built desktops share a router and modem. I've updated my drivers, scanned my computer, and nothing has seemed to help this problem.

Anything will be helpful, thank you.Just a wild guess. Maybe one of lithe computers has some kind of Malware using up bandwidth.

But.. before checking into that, here are some suggestions from Microsoft.

Five ways to improve Internet peed.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/internet-explorer/slow-five-tips-to-boost-performance

If you suspect a virus, you might try a free on-line scan.
This one is reported led to be good:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.htmlAre the computers on a SHARED network or just internet sharing through the router ?They all share the same network, the dell shares the router and the laptop is usually running wireless.Quote from: Bahizzle on August 05, 2011, 04:56:25 PM

They all share the same network, the dell shares the router and the laptop is usually running wireless.
The laptop is using wireless through the same router? The custom built computer, and the dell are hooked up to the router, and the laptop runs wireless, but they all go to the same modem. That doesn't answer the question. Here's 2 more.
1. Does the modem have a built-in wireless router?
2. Do you have a separate router with built-in wireless attached to the modem? If it's shared you are gonna see slower speeds...
Test the laptop by itself to see...1. Does the modem have a built-in wireless router?
No, we have a Netgear wifi router, and a westell modem.
2. Do you have a separate router with built-in wireless attached to the modem?
Yes, the netgear wifi router HOOKS up to the modem.

@Patio, I never used to experience slower internet speed until the last few weeks. My question was are you just sharing internet ? if you are a virus will not affect all pc's only the one infected if you are on a network like a shared drive than the virus can migrate to other pc's on the network .so a virus will not slow down your speed if only internet sharing is enabled .. Can we assume you have reboot the modem and the router?
If yes, reset the router with it's reset button. This will clear it's saved memory.Quote

It seems that the desktop is you are having connection problem with... What is your subscribed connection speed? More information is needed on the desktop's specs and OS. Have you tried updating/reinstalling the LAN card for that PC and cleaning of junk files?

Solve : Is there Offline Installer for Microsoft .NET Framework 3 or higher??

Answer»

I had a installer for FRAMEWORK 2.0 before.
That one is around 22 MB and completely offline installer.
I like that because:

  • It is offline installer
  • It's size is FAIRLY small enough with just ROUND 22 MB

Now! I'm installing higher Framework version, with the installer "dotnetfx35setup.exe" with the FILE version "3.5.21022.08". But it is not a complete installer. It is just a online installer. I mean, when i run that one, it starts installation by downloading online.

I don't WANT like that. I want full offline installer, so i can keep that one for anytime i will need in future.

  • Where can i get that official installer for version 3 or higher (like the version 2 above)?
http://www.microsoft.com/net/download.aspx then choose your saved location.

Solve : Error: mlex320.dll?

Answer»

I have just started GETTING the following error on Windows startup. I can't find any further info about it. I can press ok and it goes away and NOTHING else seems to happen.
The error is:
Error loading c:\windows\mlex320.dll

I have triple checked this is correct. Nothing even comes up when I google it. I am having intermittent problems with viruses/trojans etc, despite running Avira and Malawarebytes which is why I'm a bit concerned.

I am also having semi regular problems with the computer half freezing. I can still move the mouse, select things, eg, disable the internet connection, press restart computer, press Ctrl Alt Del, but nothing happens when I do this. It's like my comp is ignoring me. But I'll then reboot -can only do this by holding down the power button- and scan and nothing is detected.

Should I just ignore it or do I need to sort it out?

I'm using a Samsung Netbook NC10 with Windows XP Home edition, Service pack 3

Thanks for your help,
SarahI would suggest entering COMMAND prompt (Start>Run>cmd>click OK) and typing "sfc /scannow" without the quotation marks.

Solve : PC reboots after Windows Logo... never gets to Log-In?

Answer»

...Unless Automatic Restart is disabled.

I find it odd. The problem originated this morning, when I tried to turn my Sony Vaio on. It would boot up as normal (Normal for us at least. The HDD is FAILING so we get a little message everytime it boots up), but before hitting the (Windows XP) Log-In screen, would flash a BSOD type deal EXCEEDINGLY QUICKLY before rebooting itself. It would just loop like that.

So I checked some sites on google, as well as Microsoft's own support SECTION, and was basically informed that I should disable automatic restart so I could view what that blue screen was trying to tell me, therefore I would know what was wrong. But when I disabled it, the computer didn't restart itself, but took very long to get to the login screen. I'm logged on it now, but it's really, really, slow..

And the problem is, because it boots up this way, I can't see the blue screen to tell me what the issue is.

So I was wondering what issues might cause a computer to crash and restart before the log-in screen, or if anyone just happens to outright know what the problem is.

Any additional information required can be given if asked for. I'm still trying to find all the info for my computer. It's just so slow. =\

Thanks in advance. The HDD is failing...BACKUP anything important and shop for a replacement...
To confirm this if you like DLoad the Free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site...
Run the long test. You have already said your hard drive is failing. As suggested, back up everything and buy a new one. The symptoms you are having are very common with failing hard drives.Guess there's no avoiding it then, a new hard drive or a new computer.

I tried holding off on the idea that it was the HDD. It's been ''failing'' for over half a year now and I hadn't experienced nothing but a slightly slower speed in the computer, but I guess it's time is finally up.

Thanks a lot. =)Have you got you Win XP disk.? if so check this out.!

Solve : windows xp can't load users profile, all documents gone?!?

Answer»

Please bear with me, I am the first to admit that I don't know a lot about computers, but I am a fast learner and good at following directions. I am really good at doing the things I use my computer for, but when it comes to the technical stuff, not so much. I have a dell optiplex 740 with windows xp. It has been slowing down for awhile, and I was getting windows pop up that said I was low on space on my C drive. I tried freeing up some room, but there were some random programs that SEEMED to be taking more room than others (programs that I don't use anymore, but it wouldn't let me erase them.) One day I tried logging on to my account and I got a window that said, "windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system. Detail: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." It then logged me on, but almost all of my icons were gone and my My Documents folder was completely empty. I'm hopeful that they're not really gone, because i was able to open a picasa icon (which I don't recall EVER using before). Picasa pulled up all of my photos, but then immediately a message popped up saying the program had to close unexpectedly, so I couldn't save my pictures. I'm trying not to freak out, because pics of my 3 kids don't exist off of my computer. I just barely went to try to log on again, but this time after giving me the same message‚ it just went to a blue screen with no icons. I clicked on the disk clean-up icon down on the bottom of my screen, and it said that I had 0 MB of available space, and System Restore was suspended so it couldn't protect my computer until I freed at least 200 mb. I tried, but got several different messages when I tried, including: "an error OCCURED while writing installation info to disk. Check to make sure enough disk space is available and click retry or cancel." Or "unable to locate/process internal binary resource. Pleas contact your software vendor." Or "runtime error! This applicationhas requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way." Sorry if this is too much info. My #1 priority is for sure recovering my pictures, and then to get my computer working again. I know space is obviously an issue. If it won't let me delete things, do I need to buy more memory before doing anything else? And then what? Is this damage that can be fixed?Don't panic! A fault with your computer has caused you to be logged on with a "temporary profile". This has not erased your documents.

Probably your PC would benefit from a software rebuild. In the meantime, look for your documents using Windows Explorer. Go to the C: drive, then Documents and Settings, then look for your user name. You should find your documents/pictures folders there.Thank you Rob! I was able to find my pictures, and went to save them all on CDs so I have them if anything happens, but it doesn't give me the option to save to disk. I know it used to, because I've done it before. When I go to file/send to, it only offers 3 1/2 floppy A. Do they even make those anymore? Also, when you talk about a software rebuild, that sounds complicated. I assume I need to take my computer in somewhere to get that done? Should I bother with a system restore if it will let me do it first?A software rebuild means reinstalling windows-you can do that with the restore partition on your Dell.
http://www.ehow.com/how_6802870_use-dell-pc-restore-partition.htmlFor the immediacy of your concerns re your pictures. Have you tried inserting a USB flash drive into the computer (use the rear ports) and doing a simple drag and drop to the open window of the flash drive? If you do get them transfered to a flash drive a word of caution DO NOT do anything such as adding more to that flash drive or use it for anything else UNTIL you have access to another computer to transfer them to a more permanent medium (such as a cd or dvd disc). But once you have them installed on the flash drive you can then remove them from your computer HDD and that will start the process of making more HDD space available (which appears to be at the root of your computer problems). Have you tried removing your no longer required programs via add/remove programs? What is the capacity of the HDD you have in the computer? What is your make and model of the computer?truenorthQuote from: jennis on August 10, 2011, 10:41:01 AM

I have searched and do not find answer to this question. I am wondering if all the bugs have worked out of Windows 7 and how is it better than XP if it is? I am an avid Webkinz player and this year my machine seems to be slower.
I am considering installing Window 7 and IE9 although I just ran EVEREST and discovered that most of the drivers are 2001, Video card is a Legacy, Video Codecs are generics all with 2001 dated drivers. What is best action I should take?
I realize the Video card is hardware so that means I need to buy a replacement card, is this correct? My machine need some upgrading but how much I wonder. What is the minimum that I should consider?
Also I have a mid range DSL ISP which is all budget will allow at this time.

You don't even really need to upgrade to Windows 7 unless it has a feature that you really need. Otherwise, XP will continue to work fine. Someday, when you are ready to get a new computer, you can upgrade the OS then.Quote from: quaxo on October 03, 2011, 07:39:05 PM

Thank you. I will not be upgrading to Windows 7. No time or desire to spend ALL the time to set it up. As far as I know it does not have anything that I need.

Good idea, you won't find anyone here who knows anything about computers.
While you're at it, stop skipping high school English class. (PROBABLY too late, anyway).Quote from: sethbo420 on October 04, 2011, 07:37:32 PM

That's not the problem. You're not clearly explaining what's wrong. The question we're asking is if a restore quit at 95% with an error, how are you getting into Windows to use Chrome in the first place?

If you can't make sense when you post, don't BLAME us for not understanding.

Solve : WINDOWS XP - PERMISSIONS TO UPDATE THE HOSTS FILE?

Answer»

I have recently purchased a new laptop with Windows XP (64 bit) installed. I have installed a software application and would like to update
the hosts file. However I can't change its permissions to allow me to do so. My user id is a member of the admin. group so I'm a little confused.
I thought this would allow me to do ALMOST anything. I see that I do not have write permissions to the hosts file so now I'm stopped.

Has anyone experienced this ISSUE and if so, any ideas how to approach a solution ?

thanksHave you tried right cliking it and Open as Admin ? ?I don't an option to open the file as admin.. right clicking only provides an option to open / open with.......Open Notepad with Run as Admin...then open the hosts file...Quote

No such option in XP

Why do you need to adjust "hosts" file?

Take ownership of "hosts" file: http://www.winxptutor.com/ownership.htmI'm running database software which requires VMware to be running which is Linux and this runs on top of Windows as a guest system. In order
to comunicate with the database software I have to supply an IP in order to logon to it and setting up an alias in the hosts file makes
it much easier. I can use the native IP however this is a bit cumbersome so an entry in the hosts file is the usual approach.

I haven't experienced an issue with Windows in the past, I am using XP at work on a laptop and can alter the hosts file as required. I can also
do the same on a laptop using Windows Home Premium.. So.. I confused as to why I can't do it on a DELL laptop running Windows XP 64 bit.It is possible for malware to change the permissions for the hosts file. Was this a legitimate copy of the "software application", and have you got malware/virus/spyware protection in place? Are there any odd entries in the hosts file? If this is an issue connected with your work maybe you should be talking to your employer's IT department?

Have you tried logging in as Administrator and altering the permissions?

HOW TO: Use the RUN AS Command to Start a Program as an Administrator in Windows XP

This step-by-step article describes how to use the run as command to start a program as an administrator.

How to Use the RUN AS Command to Start a Program as an Administrator

As an administrator, you can use the run as command to start a program. To do so:

Locate the program you want to start in Windows Explorer, the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), or Control Panel.
Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you right-click the program icon, and then click Run as.
Click Run the program as the following user, and then type the user name, password, and DOMAIN of the administrator account that you want to use.

NOTE: If you want to use the administrator account on your computer, type the name of the computer in the Domain box. If you want to use the domain administrator account, type the name of the domain in the Domain box. When the program is running, you can use Task Manager to check the process owner on the Processes tab of Task Manager. To start Task Manager, click Start, click Run, type taskmgr, and then press ENTER.

Oooops...Thanks for the instructions per Microsoft re: opening an application (I'm using Notepad) and being able to select the Run as option.
HOwever this seems to present another issue. I know the password for me when I choose to lock then unlock my laptop. However I do
not know the password for any other accounts (administrator etc.). I'm not sure what procedure is followed when a vendor, in my case it
is Dell, configures the O/S on the laptop in their shop prior to shipping the laptop.

Is there a process which will allow me to determine what the password is or are there a STANDARD passwords setup by Microsoft for the
particular O/S, in my case it is Windows Professional XP?
Try just pressing Enter with a blank password, or try "admin" or see here if those don't work

Solve : Service Control Manager Error 7026?

Answer»

Hello, everyone.

Well, I am in REAL strife. I am asking for help as a last resort because I just can't solve my problem alone.

My problem started a couple of days ago, and I cannot use my computer at all in normal start-up mode.

The error that is reported in the event viewer is in the title of this thread. The description accompanying the error message follows:

The following boot start or system-start driver(s) FAILED to load:
AmdK8
AvgLdx86
AvgMfx86
Fips

In addition I am getting a blue screen STOP error 0x000000EA when I reboot normally. It reports that the problem file is nv4_disp.

I should ADD that I had this exact same problem a year or two ago. The solution at that time was as simple as changing some setting (or perhaps a single registry value - I can't remember). I found that solution on the Internet somewhere, and I have spent around 12 hours trying to find wherever I found it last time. My point in saying this is that, on that occasion, there was nothing wrong with my video card/display adapter (NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT) as many of the threads on the Internet regarding this problem suggest.

Can anyone please help?nv4_disp.dll is the nVidia driver. AmdK8, AvgLdx86, AvgMfx86, and Fips are all crucial elements of your processor. Reinstall the display driver first, to solve the BSOD problem.Actually he MAY want to re-install the MBoard chipset drivers 1st...then re-boot and re-install the nVidia drivers as they are sometimes reliant in the chipset being functioning properly...Chipset drivers? Even if I knew what you were talking about, the thing is that last time this happened, it turned out it had nothing to do with the driver. Last time I didn't do anything to the driver, so assuming the cause is the same, there is nothing wrong with my card/driver.Well, this is embarrassing. It would have been much easier to slip away unnoticed with my tail between my legs, but I figured you deserve to laugh at me after trying to help.

I recently moved house. During the move my computer must have received a bit of vibration somewhere along the line and eased the contacts between the card and the slot a little. In the end all I had to do was put a bit of pressure on the card to reseat it (no discernible movement, mind you).

Problem solved!

THANKS for your help.No need to feel embarrassed...good to hear you solved it.Quote from: patio on August 11, 2011, 07:07:50 AM
