Solve : Video card disk needed for windows install??

Answer»

I'm reinstalling windows on a computer originally built by my son several years ago. It keeps ASKING for the disk for the video card that I can't find. Can I run the clean reinstall without it and just GO online and try and find the download for the driver there? What version of Windows?

At what point during the install do you get the message?

Can you tell US the brand and model of the motherboard and video card?

Also, it's usually a good idea to get all of your drivers and have them on a cd or flash drive before you install. This can SAVE a lot of headache later on.

Solve : Disable Java automatic start/ automatic loading & control program access on XP?

Answer»

I consider Java -- or any other program which ASSERTS its right to take over my system, hog resources, and potentially become a vector for malignant code (xp) -- as a disease. Unfortunately, Java is a disease which occasionally is necessary and, under quarantined conditions, should be manageable.

With that intro (I'm irritated at the moment, having been fighting to disable autostart of java for quite some time and not finding any answers on this question in my web searching), let me ask the questions:

How do I disable Java's ability to autostart while keeping it on the system?

Is there any program which can act to intercept any calls on Java and ask the users PERMISSION before allowing code to access Java?

I would think these would be common questions and the NEED to keep Java chained would have been addressed long ago and be a widely known and desirable addon. However, web searches have brought up endless drivel on disabling java UPDATES but not disabling or, better yet, controlling Java access.

Thanks for any help. DLoad 2 apps...StartupCPL from Mike Lin...and WinPatrol.....both FREE...
They will provide every option needed.
WinPatrol runs silently in the BACKGROUND...takes MINIMAL resources ...but alerts you whenever any APP requests a registry change or being added to the startup group.

Hope this helps.

Solve : Safe Mode password.?

Answer»

XP Home.

Way back in the GOOD old days some VERSIONS of XP would not permit access to Safe Mode WITHOUT an admin password. Regardless of what password was ENTERED (EVEN leaving it blank) access was denied. A Registry Edit to stop being asked for a password was posted by one of the 'Geek' sites but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas where it is shown please?

Thank you.

All installs of P that I have done would allow a blank for the administrator password, unless I had explicitly set it to a non-blank value.

On the search box in the upper right of this page enter the words
password reset
and search and find many prior posts on this topic.

Solve : Sony VGN-C21GH/W - Operating System Not Found?

Answer»

I'm using Sony VGN-C21GH/W for a few years.

While working on the laptop yesterday (normal email checking and Excel sheet), the laptop shut down suddenly (the power was still on) and the next time I boot up, it shows "Operating System Not FOUND".

I failed to backup all important data (the LAST backup was done few months AGO) and also the email content.

Could you advise:
1. How do I retrieve the data in this case?
2. How do I backup the email using Microsoft Outlook?
3. How do I boot up the laptop?

Thanks!GO into the BIOS and check if it is seeing the hard drive. If it isn't, remove and reinsert the hard drive and try again. If that doesn't work, we'll try some other things.

Solve : cant print after installing parrallel printer adapter?

Answer»

can you explained y i cant print after installing parrallel printer adapter?first i install the hardware then it is DETECTED i install the driver. it was installed but i cant print..the printer is good..i try the original ltp port on board and it printed..(i just install parallel printer adapter to pci to check if its good ..)hardware was detected and PROPERLY insatlled but it cant print if i transfer it to parallel printer adapter...is it the parallel printer port adapter gone bad? y it was detected? Even faulty hardware can still be detected. Not saying the thing you have is faulty though.

Need more info, LIKE specs on the system itself, make/model of card you've put in, etc.thnx for your comment dude..i have ASUS P7H55 mobo and MOSCHIP MCS9865 1-Port Parallel PCI is it compatible?Unlike USB, you can't just plug a LPT printer in to any port and expect it to work. So let's look into that first.

Each LPT in the computer has a number, first you need to check that the computer knows that the printer is on LPT2 (the card) and not LPT1 (the on-board port). Even if you've added the printer and it works fine on LPT1, you may need to add another instance of it on LPT2.

Here are Microsoft's instructions for installing an LPT printer:
Quote

1. Connect the printer to the appropriate port on your computer according to the printer manufacturer's documentation, and verify that it is ready to print.

2. Although Windows automatically detects and installs most printers, you might need to provide additional information to complete the installation. Choose from the following, depending on the type of printer you have.

Install a parallel port (LPT) attached printer

If your printer attaches to your computer with a parallel port (LPT port), connect the printer to your computer, and then open Printers and Faxes Double-click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard, and then click Next. Click Local Printer, make sure the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer check box is selected, and then click Next. Depending on the printer you are installing, a Found New Hardware MESSAGE or the Found New Hardware Wizard appears to notify you that the printer has been detected and that installation has begun. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the printer installation. (You do not need to continue with the following instructions.)

Alternatively, after CONNECTING your printer, you can start or restart your computer to allow to automatically detect and start the Found New Hardware Wizard.

The printer icon will be added to your Printers and Faxes folder.

3. If you could not install your printer using Plug and Play, or if the printer is attached to your computer with a serial (COM) port, then open Printers and Faxes

4. Double-click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard, and then click Next.

5. Click Local printer, and then click Next.

6. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish setting up the printer by selecting a printer port, selecting the manufacturer and model of your printer, and typing a name for your printer.

Try adding the printer again as per those instructions and see if you can print to it then. Also make sure you change the printer you're printing to in the print dialog box. It's been a while since I've seen a LPT printer, but if I remember right, the name of the printer will include the port it's on, like "Epson FX-890 on LPT1". I could be mistaken though, it's been a long time and I don't have an LPT printer handy to verify this with.

Solve : Installing XP and removing Fedora???

Is there something with the HD with Fedora that would keep it from installing?

No.

I switch out the HARD drive with one from my sons computer. It won't start windows from that HD. I don't know why it won't start windows normally...even tried safe mode.

That's normal. You can't just swap a hard drive into another computer and expect it to boot. This is by design.

For You Information. Windows XP CD will NOT install if
1.) There is no FAT, FAT32 or NTFS partition
AND
2.) All space is taken by an alien OS using a non-XP compatible file system. BCD, UNIX, Linux etc.

This is well documented ** in the MS KB. You find it, I am too old to do your homework.

try formatting the hard drive
Well, he did have the right answer. But the XP Boot CD can not get that far without some space to store temporary files on the drive.
This is a fluke, as the Install CD will even 'borrow' unallocated space if needed. But a full alien drive will crash it with no warning. Rather rare. Does not apply to Vista or Windows 7.
Wonder if the OP ever figured it out?

thank for all

A new member to watch... clearly.
I've seen hard drives get into a state where an XP installation disk can't replace the existing Linux bootloader. The EASY solution is use DBAN to nuke the drive completely. XP will then install properly. You don't need to run a full nuke - just let it run for a few SECONDS. That's enough to wipe out the boot sectors.

Solve : wireless network password lost, need to find how to rename?

Answer»

I set up a wireless networg with Linksys G router on Windows XP, I use for laptop and now ipad but have forgotten the password...how can I remedy? Thanks all in advance
Grandchien 9225To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:

1) Power down all computers, the router, and the MODEM, and unplug them from the wall.
2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
5) Power down the router.
6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
9) Try to ping the router. To do this, CLICK the "Start" button > All PROGRAMS > Accessories > Command Prompt. A BLACK DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 LINES that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes).

Solve : Editing style colors in shellstyle.dll files with reshacker?

Answer»

Hi all! This is my first post here so bear with me.

I've looked through the xp FAQs and I've searched the SITE using the search window. I don't think this topic has been brought up but I can't be absolutely CERTAIN. If there's an existing thread, please point me to it.

I've been having a lot of fun recently messing around with protected system files. I like to customize the appearance of my windows themes and I'd rather not just let a third party like windowblinds take control of the whole thing.

With Resource Hacker and Replacer, I've had a fair amount of success modifying .msstyles files. I've got a nice, gold variation of Luna that I'm using and it's a work in progress.

I've run into an obstacle I can't seem to work around. In the shellstyle.dll file there's a folder 23. WITHIN that folder there's a resource, CPWEBVW.CSS.

I'm trying to change the colors of the LEFT side pane in windows explorer. I think the colors I need to change are in CPWEBVE.CSS. Problem is, I can't figure out which colors are which. I'd also like to be able to change the white background in explorer without using the desktop properties dialogue box. If you change it from there, it changes the widow background in everything else as well.

So, anyone know which of the HTML COLOR codes are the right ones to change?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Solve : This tab has been recovered?

Answer»

I'm on IE right now, Firefox is crashing almost eveytime I open it. I suggest, you TOTALLY uninstall Firefox, following ALL of these instructions: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
Install fresh copy.I think I MAY have found the problem with IE8, I finally got the updates to install, it took about 40 minutes. I will uninstall Firefox though.Good You probably need a good laugh. When I call up the MSN site and call text TWIST up...it doesn't say this tab has been recovered, it just opens it so far then goes back to the request page. Screw it, I've been through enough over this stuff. If it starts screwing with surfing, I'll get back with you.Guess what, this tab has been recovered is back when TRYING to play that game. This is not funny, I hope it doesn't rear it's head in other places.Bad coding from the game makers site...That's good to hear. I had had it happen on other sites though as well as my email service.I suspect the issue is caused by an incorrect setting or third party software. I have the following suggestions.

Suggestion 1: Reset Internet Explorer settings

1. Please open Internet Explorer, click “Tools”, and click “Internet Options”.

2. Switch to the “Advanced” tab.

3. Refer to “Reset Internet Explorer Settings” section, and click “Reset”.

4. Click “Close” when the resetting process is complete.

5. Close Internet Explorer and restart it.

Suggestion 2: Run IE without Add-ons

1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Visit website in this IE.

Suggestion 3: Try to use the compatibility mode.

Suggestion 4: Click Tools>Options>Advance>disable third party browser extension.

Suggestion 5: Try a CLEAN Boot

1. Click Start, type MSCONFIG in the Search Bar and Press Enter to start the System Configuration Utility.

2. Click the Services tab, check the Hide All Microsoft Services box and click Disable All (if it is not gray).

3. Click the Startup tab, click Disable All and click OK.

4. Restart the computer and test the issue.

Please monitor the system in the Clean Boot environment. If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to narrow down the problem.

Solve : Cannot control volume.?

Answer»

I have read many posts posts about volume control. Most reference volume control missing. My problem is different. My volume control icon is there . The problem is I can't control the volume. If I hit volume up it goes to max. If I hit volume down it goes all the way down to nothing. I can't get anything in between. This happens whether I use my mouse or the +/- buttons on my wireless key board. It seems to work for a little while if I reboot but then the problem returns. Any suggestions?Welcome!
COMPUTER Hope is the number one location for free computer help.
The forum will help EVERYONE with all computer questions.

Please supply additional information. Is this a Laptop, Notebook or other portable device?
Some portable devices have a mechanical volume control independent of the Windows volume control. This can ALSO happen with some media players.problem is on my desktoop. Dell Dimension E-310 running windows XP service pack 3.You did not say if you had made any changes to the system. If the system did that out of the box, you would return it to Dell.
Without the details it is guess work from here. The sound problem with Windows 7 and recent Dell models is with the drivers. You have to use the Dell drivers, not the drivers from the chip maker. But this is only a problem for individuals who decide to reformat the drive and start over. They forget that the drivers are not on the install DVD. Generic drivers are not quite right.
The above is all guess work. Maybe it is wrong. But without specific details of how and when this started, the is about the best. The guess work is based on similar post on the Dell forums. The typical solution is to download the exact drivers from Dell for that model.
Even if device manager says all is OK.

And if is just not Windows 7. The rule also works for older Dell machines with XP. Dell does their own drivers. Get the Dell drivers.

If ANYBODY else here knows more about this, please come in.
I have wiped this hard drive several times but you made me think that perhaps the last time I did not use the original Dell driver and allowed the option of "search the net for a suitable driver" and one was chosen for me that while being close was not an exact match. This was a come and go problem so it has been hard to pin down. I have uninstalled the current driver and installed the one from the original driver and utilities disk that came with the machine. Thanks for your help and I will have to wait and see if this solves the problem. Are you talking about the volume up and down on a keyboard or what? Where are you pressing it?

If it's a keyboard, what is the model of the keyboard? (look on the bottom, should be a label)

Some keyboards require software for their media and volume keys to work correctly (or at all).Problem is not with my keyboard. (Logitech model Y-RAJ56A) The result is the same whether I am trying to adjust volume with the keyboard or if click on the volume control on the TASKBAR with my mouse. I even shut down the keyboard (removed the batteries) because I thought perhaps the volume button on it was making contact when I wasn't pressing it. I just let Windows do a search for an updated driver and it installed a new one. My hopes are not high as I have done this before. Volume control is working fine at the moment. Will see how long it lasts.I'll go ahead and cross my fingers for you Can you check your Windows component services startup type on Human Interface Device Access? Solve : When to buy new??

Answer»

What is the best way to determine if it's time to buy a new computer? Dell Dimension 4700, Windows XP, just really slow. I've done what I can to remove junk/unused software; seems to have adequate memory. To be more specific, is it WORTH $100-$200 to have someone with experience tell me if I need a new computer? Or just spend the money on the new computer? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Start shopping & you'll see computers have never been cheaper. You can even get a tower (only) at BestBuy for $300-400 including OS.No. If you are willing to tinker and do some work.
You can buy a working 4700 less keyboard mouse and monitor for under $100 on eBay. With legit Windows XP OEM INSTALLED. No warranty, except it will work the first time your turn it on. You can trade parts between the two and find out what is wrong.

But for $300 you can buy a new PC that will outperform the 4700. You choice. OR, If the PSU is OK, get a new motherboard that can use the old ram chips.

The speed problem may be just the hard drive. Or, a badly fragmented file system. Or spyware.

IMHO, if you have the money, now is the time to buy. It is a buyers market out there. Consider building your computer: The computer in my specs was built for a total of $297 (never topped $313.) (Including replacing the DVD Burner and the Motherboard.) Original cost was somewhere around $186. The cost of a stock Lenovo computer (forgot the model but saw it at the local computer store yesterday) with the single-core AMD Sempron 2100+, the ATI Radeon HD 5450, 160 GB hard drive, AMD 760G chipset, is $500.

This computer would be acceptable for normal office use-the Pentium 4 was discontinued in 2008. It is single-core. You would not be able to upgrade to any of the new Intel Socket 1155 processors e.g. i3, i5, i7, and I think even the new Pentium, all support socket 1155.) The old core 2 DUOS run laps around this processor too. The SIMPLY horrible onboard Intel graphics will not work for anything other than, well, flash games at high resolutions. If you are looking to play, even, say, some of the latest games at, low resolutions, low details and with acceptable FPS, you need an upgrade.Quote

I've done what I can to remove junk/unused software; seems to have adequate memory.
Have you tried reinstalling your operating system first? Always free. Make SURE you have your original xp cd and make backup copy of your documents.

any body tellme the REASON y my computer is always hang and blackening..is it the hardisk or virus?can anybody teach me how to fix it? thnx in advance...^_^Does your computer hang at the POST screen or does it hang after booting into Windows?NO..it doesn't..there's a time that it will blacken and hangs up after an hour or half day of sing it..Try cleaning your desktop FIRST internally. On the RAM modules, clean the gold contacts and BLOW out dust from slots MAKING usre they are PROPERLY inserted. Or use one RAM to check on the difference. If you have a Video card installed, clean the contacts as well or alternately use the onboard video for testing.

Solve : Disk properties indicate a full disk.?

Answer»

I don't know if this is the correct forum for this request. If not please direct me to the correct forum.

When I check the Properties of my C: drive (the only partition) it indicates that my disk is full (40Gb).
When I add up the Properties of the 1st level folders I can account for less than 16Gb.

Is there a way to remedy this situation.

Thanks.1) Assuming no malware, System Restore is probably using a GREAT deal of space. You can disable system restore (All restore points will be deleted immediately) or USE Disk Cleanup to delete all but the most recent restore point.

2) Check your TEMP folder

3) Download and run treesize to see where the space is being used (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/)Quote from: Allan on September 27, 2011, 06:50:25 AM

Solve : screen resolution problem?

Answer»

I had installed windows xp sp2 in my friends pc. Earlier it had windows xp unlimited. It has 120 mb ram 1. 70 GHZ Intel celeron processor. Samsung syncmaster 551s MONITOR. Since the new installation the screen resolution is not correct. There is too much pixelzation on the screen. I tried everything but it doesnt work. The cpu is of pcs and monitor is of samsung. The colour quality is set to lowest and i cant change it the pointer doesnt move. Please help what can i do to set it RIGHT?. It is currently set to lowest. There is no sound for songs and videos.Hi there,
Looks like that some drivers aren't enabled for the computer's hardware. IF you are not experienced with installing drivers and If your friend's computers has still an active internet connection, I would recommend to download a little program called Drivermax (http://drivermax.com/). You will have to create an account for free, then Drivermax can detect your Computer's hardware and will download and install the right drivers for you.

Cheers!DO NOT use any 3rd party driver apps. To install drivers just go to the website of the various hardware manufacturers, download the current driver, and install it.

Look in device manager - are there any yellow or red symbols?

When you say you installed SP2, does that mean you did a new install or just upgraded to sp2? And why not sp3?I had a windows xp disc with sp 2 integrated into it.the cpu is of pcs SYSTEM and monitor is of samsung where can i find the drivers for them?Go to the website of the computer manufacturer or the motherboard manufacturer for the chipset driver. Go to the websites of the manufacturers of the video card, sound card, ethernet card, etc for their drivers. How to findout which motherboard is installed and about the video card and driver manufacturers. Please tell how to find out about all this as it is an old systemDLoad and run Speccy....or System Information for Windows....both Free.

Are you sure about that RAM amount ? ?
If so i would surely add some more...Everest Home is a FREE program that will give you all you need to know about what components are installed in your PC.

http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

I've found the other 2 more accurate when it comes to ID'ng MBoard info...The Everest program is 6 years old & is no longer supported. It has been replaced with Aida64 which is not free. However, it may work fine on an older motherboard. It is an MSI motherboard. MANUFACTURED by msi and the vendor is intel. Where to search msi or intel website? This information was given by speccy. MSI site...Ok. I will search MSI website. Now the problem is solved. Thanks guys.Kewl...

Solve : My Computer was once good but now stinks?

Answer»

Ok so my computer and the way it gets internet is wierd. When i turn my computer and i have logged in the first thing i have to do to use the internet is sign in to my yahoo account(if i dont do this the internet doesnt work). After that the internet works fine and everythings great. So whats my problem? WELL my dad put yahoo parental controls on my computer(by the way im 18 now so dont judge me). They were really really annoying so i found the folder where the program was stored and -CUT- all the files out. Restarted my computer and BOOM i no longer have to sign in to the yahoo account and no more parental controls. However all videos on all websites lag now, like as they buffer the picture freezes but the sound keeps going. And all vidoes keep this up until its completly bufferd. This never happend b4 but now waching youtube and anything else is a pain. Also this happened directly after i removed all the programs from the folder so i SERIOUSLY doubt its some kind of coincidence.

ps: i recently tried to play runescape to relive the old days and the same thing happens, the picture freezes while the sound keeps going and i palyed runescape on this computer for years without that problemwhat browser are you using? try this:

If this happens after removing folder, since you forgot to mention what are these programs, then it might not be just coincidence.I tried it on Safari and youtube actually didnt lag, im using internet explorer 8 with windows xp. Ignore the part about the graphics card-I'm almost certain its flash player as safari videos works perfectly fine. (flash player COMES separately in the IE version and the WebKit (firefox, chrome, safari, etc.) version.

Just to be sure your PC is up to the task of playing HD video, it would help if you posted your PC specs, most importantly your CPU model and Graphics Card model.ok now my computer keeps freezing, like full on the mouse wont move frozen and it keeps happening

Solve : batch file which format drive on single click?

Answer» Hai FRNDS..any body can suggest me ...how can i creat batch file which delete partition of hardisk on single CLICK............Out of interest, why do you need to do this?just for knowledge......is it possible or not............Well you see, I (and I'm sure my colleagues too) are just trying to think of legitimate reasons for doing such a thing. There are good reasons why the action of formatting a drive requires confirmation. A single-click approach is risky and potentially accident-prone.

Even if it were possible to do such a thing, I would be reluctant to recommend or offer a solution. And since you haven't given any compelling reason why you need to do this (and since you are such a relative newcomer here), we have to treat your OPENING question with caution. For all we know, you are a naughty ten-year old, hoping to trick his mum or dad into formatting their hard drives.

You see the problem? On my monitor says no SIGNAL input go to power saveBoy! This thread is all over the PLACE and possibly even hijacked.

First the topic is to format a drive on a single click and then it jumps to removing a partition.
Make up your mind.....which is it?

I know how, but without a darn good reason, I won't tell.

Solve : Windows XP or Windows 7?

Answer»

Hi friends,
According to you which is best Windows XP or the Windows 7.Windows 7 is new but my friends are using and say that its processing is slow.is it true? Can i use both windows in my computer?Windows 7 supports IE 9, which in my own experience is a great improvement over IE 8-its page loading speeds are noticeably faster. It also has a "compatibility mode" feature to support older websites which may not be displayed properly. It supports the latest games more effectively by supporting DirectX 10 and 11, which are 3D engines used to render graphics more effectively. Manufacturers are also gearing most of their newer hardware at Windows 7 and are even starting to drop support for Windows XP, which was developed in 2000. I do not see any incentive to use Windows XP unless you are on an older system which does not support/will not run effectively Windows 7.

"Processing is slow." I'm afraid you may have to elaborate on that-if you have an older computer, i.e. (Athlon X2 5200+, 1 GB DDR2 RAM, nVidia 9400 GT, 80 GB 5400 RPM HDD), you will definitely see a performance decrease, like I did with my Sony Vaio W netbook. What are the specifications of your friends' computers? What are the specifications of your computer?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/system-requirementsI like Windows XP more than Windows 7.even though windows xp dont have any graphics like 7,Windows XP is very simple and efficient.but unfortunately Microsoft does not provide any more updates for windows XP. It is better to use windows xp in less memmory machine. and also It is possible to use both windows xp and 7 at the same time by using a software called VIRTUALBOX.You can find more information about virtualbox in its wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_box and here also http://www.virtualbox.org/

Windows XP:

1.Released a decade ago. It got the EXACT same reception as Windows Vista. I'm not even exaggerating. But that's not relevant. The important thing is that it was released a decade ago. Think about it. If you are running Windows XP, you are running software whose code was by and large written at the time the NSYNC & the backstreet boys were popular. People like to say "well, it's well-tested"! Which is true. But so was the Space shuttle Columbia. And, to be frank, it's NOT well-tested. It was well-tested on a variety of hardware throughout the years, but a lot of people are installing it on new machines with gobs of RAM and enough video processing power to launch a sheep CLEAR past the horizon (which I will get to) and a lot of other people who claim that MS is in on some gigantic conspiracy to keep people from using XP, and install those utterly ridiculous DirectX 10 on XP and other aftermarket crap. A working software ecosystem is the sum of it's parts, and the fact remains that running XP with gobs of RAM and dual graphics cards and "deluxe" sound systems and other stuff simply isn't the scenario that was tested for the last 10 years of running on manufactured PCs. And additionally, the claim is redundant, because Windows Vista and 7 are Windows XP- they are merely a newer version of it. They didn't rewrite the entire OS. the vast majority of the codebase is almost certainly unchanged. And what was changed is what was well-tested. So basically, Windows Vista/7 is the "well-tested" part of XP, combined with well-tested new additions. I fail to see the logic in sticking with a 10 year old operating system if the hardware can support the newer version. It's inspired only be sheer pig-headedness and ignorance.

2.Uses standard 2-D graphics mode for the desktop.

This is important. Using Windows Aero on a newer machine, and the desktop will be faster- since newer Graphics cards a typically refined to deliver good 3-D performance, but their 2-D operations can be somewhat lacking. More to the point, but I paid for my 9800GT to use it. If I was using XP, I'd only really be using it if I was playing a game. Otherwise, I'd just be in the standard 2-D graphics mode, which isn't exactly full-utilization of my hardware, is it? Why should a person with a 9800GT or a 250GTX be looking at the same desktop as somebody who ran a ATI Rage Pro 10 years ago? What are they getting for the higher price point aside from a bunch of promising NUMBERS on a box if they run XP? Nothing, unless they constantly run games. In which case they would be getting better performance with Win Vista/7 assuming their system is capable, thus defeating the purpose.

3.Generally uses less memory, depending on ones choice of running software.

Which is good and bad. It's good for older PCs that have less memory, but it's bad for PCs that have more.

Look, I have 8GB of RAM. I paid for it. And My Operating System better bloody well USE that memory. If I was to install XP, even the 64-bit edition (which would be the only way to get it to use more than the licensing limit of ~3.5GB, and would moot the comparison since XP x64 is really just Server 2003 with a new hairstyle), my RAM would just sit there, idle. Sure, I'd have 8GB of RAM, could start photoshop, Firefox, Visual Studio, and still ahve 4GB left over, but that isn't a good thing. Free RAM is wasted RAM. Thus, superfetch (and a few OSS alternatives available on Linux distros, I forget the specific name but they seem to work well). People who install XP in a 8/16GB machine with a super awesomeo hex-core system and have 5TB HARD drives aren't interested in "performance"; they are the same type of idiots who would stick a body kit on a Camry to make it look more like a corvette and consider it a performance upgrade. Their interested in perceptions of performance. Sure, running Windows XP on that super awesome new system gives a perception of performance, but so would running Windows 3.1 on a system from 2001. So why aren't people yelling about how much better Windows 3.1 was, why is it Windows XP? I honestly don't know. my best guess is people sticking with XP (on new systems particularly) are, well, for lack of a better term, mouth-breathing idiots.

Now to be clear, Windows XP is a fine system- for using on systems well-suited to it. For example, an older machine. They were designed for XP, after all. Just as Windows 98 or 95 are good for machines designed for each of those. But to install XP on an NEW system is no different than installing one of those even older Operating Systems on a newer system. you trade a perception of speed for real performance. Then you have people who are so devoted to the idea that XP makes things faster and is all-around better that they fabricate benchmarks and make stuff up. There was one forum member here that has been curiously absent since I proved that the DX10 on XP thing was a utter load of nonsense, despite his insistence that he ran Crysis on Ultra high settings in Windows XP and it worked fine (which was quite clearly a lie), and that the entire thing was a giant conspiracy by Microsoft for the sole purpose of doing something as clearly evil as trying to sell their newer Operating System.

A sidebar, because I do this- I've never understood the XP diehards, really. They constantly complain about how Microsoft is abandoning them and how it's totally unfair. You paid them for XP (ironically, a lot of the people who complain about MS not caring about XP users are themselves using a pirated copy or they got it with their system and thus didn't really pay for it and got it free with said system). But that makes no sense. That would be like owning a car for 40 years, and when the manufacturer says "well, we aren't making some of the parts for that system anymore" the owners of the car complain that they are being abandoned in such a way as to complain that they didn't somehow get their money's worth.

4.Has the most ridiculous default theme for any desktop operating system ever conceived by humanity.

This isn't really relevant but it's worth mentioning. Particularly since that was the common complaint of the day when it was Windows 98 that was the "Superior" system (when XP was released). The more things change, the more they stay the same, SEEMS to ring true even in the otherwise constantly changing world of computers and their software.

Thank YOUHOW did you download it?
One does not drop and drag from a website. (Few exceptions?)
A Excel spreadsheet has many properties that are not embedded in a web page. If the author will let download it, you click on a link for the download, save it, then open it in Excel.

To my knowledge there is no drop and drag for embedded objects from a website. But I don't KNOW EVERYTHING. Maybe there is.

Solve : Windows will not Boot - Black Screen, Flashing Cursor?

Answer»

I've seen this topic posted several times, but in checking the messages and responses none seem to apply or resolve my situation, so I'm posting this for some fresh help.

I have a Dell Latitude D800 laptop (2003 era) with 250GB (IDE) drive (replaced about 6 months ago) running Win XP-Pro, SP-3. One day I shut it down, then the next day it wouldn’t boot up. No new hardware or software installed for ages (perhaps other than Win & McAfee updates). The POST screen displays momentarily, but then it goes black with an unmovable blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner. I’ve disconnected and unplugged all cables and peripherals to no avail. Attempts to boot into safe mode with F8 key are fruitless, as is Cntrl-Alt-Del key. I can boot from CD via F12, enter BIOS set-up via F2, or run Dell diagnostics. I’ve booted from into Windows Recovery mode via the OP Disk CD and done repair, and also invoked “bootcfg/rebuild” command, all to no avail – black screen/cursor still returns. I can see no obvious command in the BIOS that if changed might solve the problem. One odd thing however, is that the hard disk capacity in the BIOS reads 137GB, yet the capacity is 250GB. If I had to guess, it would almost seem like this is closer to what might’ve been available free space on the disk, as though the BIOS can’t see a large portion of the disk (yet when BOOTING into recovery mode the operating system appears to be recognized on the C drive !?). I cannot figure how to troubleshoot this, however. I’m obviously trying to preserve and save my programs and data already on the disk.

I ran extensive diagnostic tests, and all hardware passed all tests, including the hard drive tests. One exception was an error message indicating a failure of the “NIC EEProm Test”, device Broadcom 5705M, Error code “3B00:0781” – all greek to me, but seems to indicate a hardware failure in the networking circuit, seemingly built into the motherboard. So I spring for a new motherboard and replace it, but when I boot up it indicates “Invalid Configuration information” & “Time-of-day not set”, and wants to run a set-up utility (also no Dell service tag number – not sure if that has any bearing). The “press F1 to continue” route yields nothing, but the “press F2 to run set-up utility takes me back into the BIOS screens. I reset the clock with the proper time, then re-boot – arrrggh !! - black screen with cursor again. Same behaviors and actions as before. I reboot into Dell diagnostics again and run extensive tests again, this time no errors, not even the NIC EEProm test error (limited success ?). I’m thinking maybe the CMOS/NVRAM data might be corrupt. I check the CMOS battery (weird Dell configuration, but 8 yrs. old now), it’s rated at 7.2V and checks out at 8.1V – seems okay. Perhaps erroneous or corrupt information is acquired from the hard disk during boot-up and transferred into the CMOS data corrupting its addresses and stalling the boot-up. I’m lost – unclear how to proceed from here. Have I been attacked by a virus ? How do I troubleshoot and resolve this ? In checking some forums the problem seems somewhat common, but others seem to have resolved it from Vista or Win-7 operating systems which probably have more robust recovery options. Again, trying to save my data if at all possible. Can anyone help ?

This portion caught my eye. Is 48-bit LBA enabled in the BIOS?
What 48-bit LBA is:
http://www.48bitlba.com

I know its a laptop, but is it possible to get into the BIOS, reset the BIOS, and then replace the CMOS battery?
You might have to replace the NIC-the EEPROM corrupt refers to a corrupted firmware.Interesting – not heard of this 48-bit LBA, and not sure what impact it has on the problem, but it may have some merit. The original hard disk I replaced was only 60GB which fits within the basic BIOS capability mentioned in the web site and white papers. As I thought harder about how much of the 250GB I was using before the crash, it couldn’t have been more than 80GB which would’ve left about 170 GB free – this also adds credence to the 48-bit LBA theory. I never examined what hard disk capacity the system thought it had and just assumed it saw the whole 250GB. Question is the disk was used successfully for many months, so what decided to suddenly make it crash ? Was it a virus that got past my updated McAfee anti-virus ? My suspicion is that some automatic software update created a conflict and corrupted some registry entry.

I was running Windows XP-Pro with SP-3, which theoretically should have corrected the hard disk limit problem, but as you mentioned the BIOS may not have been “adjusted”. Problem is, though I can get to the BIOS, I can find no way to adjust or enable any 48-bit LBA setting – I’ve explored all seven pages of BIOS settings. The other question is can I get an updated BIOS for this computer, if that’s what it takes. It’s a Phoenix Technologies BIOS (Version A-13, if that has any bearing). I appreciate your catching this tidbit, and if I ever get the system up and running, I’ll explore this more thoroughly and work to correct it.

I don’t know how to reset the BIOS, but certainly the battery can be replaced. The “EEPROM corrupt” as being firmware has merit, but I replaced the motherboard, so any firmware corruption must be coming from corrupt files on the hard disk and being written into the EEPROM. Anyway, my quest continues…

Unless you were running some NIC flashing software that had gone rogue I wouldn't care too much about the NIC... I doubt a failed NIC would cause Windows to fail to boot.

I'm afraid the only way to know for sure is to take out the hard drive, salvage your data, put a less than 137 GB capacity HDD back into the laptop, install Windows on the new hard drive, and see if the problem persists... Tell me what you think...Dell forums search results have been clear on the D800 laptop as not able to support larger hard drives. You should try using again the original mobo on a supported HD capacity and see if it runs ok. If anything turns out fine, you could try returning the replacement mobo for another item.Okay….Thanks, Transfusion and Jason. Examining the Dell Forum link provided by Jason I now have a good picture of what happened. Following are posts I extracted from the Dell forum.

First, a response written by “Jack Shack” in Sept of 2009:

“First, the D800 uses parallel ATA (PATA) IDE drives, so you cannot use a SATA drive of any type or model. Second, the D800 BIOS never received an update to 48 bit LBA so any drive larger than 137 GB will not have BIOS support. The largest drive you can easily use is 120 GB IDE.
If your operating system installation CD supports 48 bit LBA, such as Windows XP Service Pack 1 or later, you can still use a drive larger than 137 GB. Windows XP SP1 and later use their own disk access routines once the boot process has finished so having BIOS support is not as critical as it once was. Since the boot process does use the BIOS for initial access, however, it is possible to have a disk crash that can force you to rebuild the boot drive. Also, any utilities that use the BIOS routines can cause problems as they will not be able to see the entire drive. If you wish to use a drive larger than 137 GB it would be a good idea to keep frequent back-ups. You may also ALLEVIATE the pain of a crash to some degree if you partition the hard drive into at least two partitions, keeping the boot partition within the 137 GB boundary. You can then use the second partition for data storage which will be left untouched by any disaster that occurs within the boot partition.”

Also a post response from “ejn63” on the forum for the same issue:

“….windows must be installed to a partition that does not cross the 120G boundary. If you install Windows to a partition that crosses the BIOS boundary - no matter what version - you WILL lose everything on the drive at some point.
Once you've installed Windows, you can safely create a second partition for data (NOT for Windows) to use the rest of the drive.
There is no BIOS for this (D-800) system that supports drives over 120G, nor is there any way around this limitation.”

Basically in my zeal to upgrade my drive months ago I just assumed any ole PATA laptop drive would work. So I cloned my old 60GB onto a BRAND new 250GB Western Digital drive I got on sale from Fry’s Electronics using an Apricorn EZ Gig II cloning set-up. Nowhere was obvious about the 48-bit LBA issue. While everything went seemingly successful, and I was up and operational after the task, there was demon lurking in the shadows waiting to attack. Probably some software update recently happened that altered some registry values, and WHAM …. crashed system, Win no boot. I was operating on risky borrowed time and was in blissful ignorance. I guess I was fortunate to have been operational as long as I was.

I’ve extracted the drive from my Dell and put it into a USB enclosure, and it appears I can access all files and folders on the drive (whew !). So I’m considering one of two strategies.

1) Get another 250GB drive and try to partition it as indicated in the post, then re-install Windows XP-Pro on a < 137GB partition. Then try to transfer my programs and data.

2) Get a less than 137GB drive (probably 120GB) and re-install Windows XP-Pro, then try to transfer my programs and data (as Transfusion suggests).

My questions (and challenges) are now this.

Looking at option 1 -- I’ve never partitioned a drive before – any direction on how to do this ? Assuming successful partitioning, how to I get my programs and data back onto the partitioned drive ? Is it just as simple as copying files from the old drive to new locations in the new drive ? What goes where (programs, data, etc) into what partitions ? Would there be any straggling system files or logs I would need to copy over ?

If I go option 2, which appears more straightforward, the same questions as above. Do I simply copy folders and files unto the new drive ?

Your help continues to be appreciated.
Good find, jason2074-I had simply overlooked the option of partitioning a large drive.

I wouldn't support resizing/moving a partition which has critical data on it without a clear UI-I use EASEUS Partition Manager because you can literally drag sliders to set your desired partition size. It would be ideal to take the Hard Drive out, put it into another computer, back up your data, and use that computer to run EASEUS Partition Manager, resize your partitions, and you are set to go.

EDIT-I was all enthusiastic until I thought of my experience with a CompaQ Evo n400c (2003). It had a laptop IDE drive that would not fit into a typical desktop IDE connector. I wanted to create 2 partitions on it-It did not have a CD-ROM drive nor support USB boot. I eventually set up a WinPE boot over network to do so. I hope your computer at least supports USB boot...
http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/partitioneditors.shtml
Partition managers which are designed to be booted from DVD. You can convert an ISO to boot from a USB drive via YUMI. Again, please make sure you back up all your data-possibly by booting to, say, Ubuntu Live CD, plugging in a large external hard drive (formatted into partitions smaller than 137GB), and manually copying all your data. You could always use the Windows XP CD to fix a missing MBR if you copy all your data back and find you can't boot.Whoaa Transfusion… appreciate your inputs, but you just crossed my language barrier. You used a lot of jargon that I’m having a hard time following.

Let me re-iterate … I’m now thinking of preserving the current non-bootable drive and buying a new drive either >137GB and partitioning it, or <137GB. I’d do a fresh Win XP-Pro, SP-3 install either way. Then how do I get the original programs and data over to the new fresh Win XP hard drive, and exactly where do I put them ? What goes into what partition ? Do I simply drag copies straight into the new drive ? What are the caveats associated with this ? I don’t have another IDE hard drive laptop, so I’d transfer files via USB from an external hard drive enclosure (where the old drive is now mounted) into the new (Win XP Pro) drive to be installed in the Dell D-800 and newly formatted (and perhaps partitioned).

Or are you suggesting that attempting to re-partition the non-bootable drive, after a back-up, would be a better way to go ?

I examined your “thefreecountry” link. Lots of options. I don’t know where to begin. What’s your recommendations and experience ? I didn’t see that “EASEUS” utility you mentioned. What is YUMI ? Need a little more guidance.

Do not tie yourself with all the options provided. First, All files should have a complete backup from another source either by portable or external drive that is readily accessible. Only transfer files needed from external backups to your operating system to avoid crowding the drive and loosing immediate space. Transfer IN - Transfer OUT.
Perhaps my rather rambling post wasn't too clear...

You need to have a complete backup of all your data on the D800's drive, which is 250 GB (which you upgraded). You will not be able to connect the drive to a desktop computer because its a laptop IDE hard drive. Therefore you need to get your D800 up and working with an operating system in order to backup your data.

You can boot to Ubuntu through a Live CD and connect a USB hard drive to back up all your data before performing any partition modification so you will have a copy of your data on your 250 GB HDD. There are also other ways to backup your data-this is just one of them.

When you are done backing up your data, download this:
http://www.partitionwizard.com/partition-wizard-bootable-cd.html
which is a bootable CD image of a partition manager that will help you to resize your partitions without data loss. Again, please remember to back up your data in the rare event that a power outage causes your hard drive to be trashed. This is just one of the ways to resize your partition.

Solve : the pipe state is invalid?

Answer»

My computer began loading slowly and then I was unable to log in the the internet. I found out that my DCHP had been stopped and my IP was READING at 0.0.0.0, so I started it in administrative control: services. That was when I found that many other services had been stopped. Each time I start my computer the items revert BACK to stopped. So I tracked the event log and saw that the first message for an item not starting was "the pipe state is invalid". Each of the following errors LISTS the same reason for not starting. What does this mean and how do I fix it? Any bluescreen messages previously prior to the invalid error?A suggested answer from Microsoft is to try a system restore to a point prior to when this started.

This seems to be a common issue with Vista, as most of the results I've found were issues from Vista USERS. I haven't been able to find an occurrence of this with XP. I'm assuming you're using XP since you posted this in the XP forums.I did find this, does any of it sound FAMILIAR?

Solve : Right-side scroll bar is missing when pages load.?

Answer»

I have been noticing lately, that when a web page loads onto the screen, the right-side scroll bar is usually missing on the web page. I always have to HIT the "FULL Screen" button to get the scroll bar to come up. Is there anyway to remedy this? I have already went to Internet options and made sure the "use smooth scrolling" box is checked. I even checked the VIEW button, but there is nothing there to change the settings. What is the browser involved? What is your operating system? Not knowing the answer to those questions it becomes a guess. If it is Firefox as a browser TRY selecting "defaults' . If it is IE try running in "no add ons " mode. truenorthI find that some of my customers have their screen RESOLUTION set really low, so that they can read the names under the Desktop icons easier. Setting the font to 10 point usually makes things a lot easier to read, without having to use a real low screen res.

So I'm just curious, 'what is your screen resolution now?'
Most web pages are being designed for the newer monitors with pretty high resolution and won't display properly on a screen set to 800x600, for instance.

I really hate having to use the L-R scrollbar to see an entire web page.

Solve : Audio Driver?????

I cant find it on the internet. can i get a little help find the drive 'audio driver PCi/VEN_8086' thanks in advance.........PCi/VEN_8086... is the address of your PCi controller-sound card interface.
What is the exact make and MODEL of your sound card? speccy should show it...It's customary when asking for help from someone who cannot see your computer, to tell them all about it in your opening comments.
Make, model, OS, AGE, desktop or laptop, etc.

If there is really a sound card and not ON-Board sound, it's ALSO good to know if it came with the computer or was an add on, buy the user.

If it's either on-board or came with the system, the sound driver will usually be available on the PC manufacturer's web site.

Just yesterday, I had to go to the Gateway web site and find the sound driver for a six year old PC. Having the exact model number was all I needed to get what I wanted.

What version of SAS are you installing? The latest is on 5 already. Depending on your INTERVAL of opening/scanning or using SAS, it will update to the latest core definition. That is normal.Quote from: jason2074 on August 18, 2011, 06:00:48 PM

Everybody is overlooking a key issue here. He said he removed it. Yet, he's still seeing the update notices. If he truly removed it, what he believes to be its continued presence could be a virus or other malware. Ok, that is a valid reason to say its most probably an infection. Always thought about it. However, my thoughts was on the information about the updates and not on the removal part. It was not yet clear on how it was uninstalled by the OP.I think actually even though it's neen removed the updat feature is still existing in the startup group...
Not neccessarily an infection.

Okay, I did remove it using the add/removal tool on my control panel. The update continued to appear. Solve : Blue Screen: INVALID_PROCESS_DETACH_ATTEMPT?

Answer»

Hi There

I recently allowed a lot of Windows Updates to install at once, after which I keep getting a blue screen with the error: INVALID_PROCESS_DETACH_ATTEMPT

Also, each time I boot a window to install "Windows Genuine Advantage Tool" appears before anything loads. I've clicked cancel each time.

A system restore to before the updates won't work.

Any help diagnosing and fixing this problem is much appreciated!

It was said that there cannot be enough info about your system included with your post so I've run an Everest report which tells about my system in great detail - but would like to PM it to a volunteer as I'm not sure its WISE to reveal this much on the net...

Any help would be much appreciated! Please let me know if I may PM you my system data and if you have any further questions regarding my issue

Thanks!!

Read this link to RESOLVE WGA -> Description of the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications applicationHi,

You may try to restore your PC BACK to defaults.

The process of restoring PC to defaults is simple, just hold the [alt] key and press the F10 key right when you turn the PC on to start the recovery program.

Check out all the NEW software that you have installed on your computer, if the software are not genuine and authenticated, remove them, because they may be the cause of problem.

Another way is, get in the BIOS and turn of the option of Autostart at system failure. Thanks for the response Micheal Smith

Windows was installed by a FRIEND so may not be valid - but don't think that's causing the blue screen error as I have not installed the WindowsGenuineAdvantage program, only been prompted to do so.

What will happen if I turn off Autostart on System Failure in the BIOS? Restore your original operating system from your OEM recovery or Windows Install disc. OR resolve first your WGA notification as already suggested. The blue screen has not appeared again but I wanted to say thanks for your suggestions

I backed up my operating system with acronis but after doing the restore I still have the problem. Something else is going on.MS in their infinite wisdom, provided us with a Go Back program, years ago.

Today, it's called "System Restore" and it's in the 'Programs > Accessories > System Tools folder.

Unless someone has turned it off, there will be a restore point in there, maybe a few days old, that you can use to GO BACK to a time before you GOOFED.
I use mine so often that I run a little script in my Startup folder to force a new Restore Point every time I boot up my PC.

I can think of few things that are worse than needing to GO BACK and not having a Restore Point to go back to.

Good Luck,
The Shadow

Thanks for the suggestion on USING system restore but that was the first thing I tried. Every restore point all the way back to June just does not work.
