Solve : Windows Login Hangs?

Answer»

Computer Spec:

OS: Windows XP 32-bit
Motherboard: MSI K9N6GM Series
CPU: Unknown - Unknown Speed
Video Card: EVGA 9600 GSO
Memory: 3Gb (Unknown Brands, but 1GB is one brand, 2GB is another)

Ok.. Here's the issue. A couples of days ago, I was able to use the computer WITHOUT any issues logging in. But later that afternoon, Someone else logged into a different account without issues. He shutdown, booted back up and was not able to log back in, in a timely manner. Since then I've tried logging into 3 different accounts over the domain it's in, and the same issue arises. This issue also arises when I try to log into the machine locally.

Boot up is clean, nothing GOES wrong during the boot up. When windows enter the GUI, the 'preparing network connections' window appears, which is normal. Now, since the issue has arose, I've been receiving a Task scheduler service window that states, "Some tasks did not execute at their scheduled TIMES because the task scheduler service was not running. You can view the list of missed tasks, and attempt to run them again, from with the scheduled tasks folder." which opens while the 'preparing network connections' window is up. I click ok, and the 'applying computer settings' window appears. After everything is settled, the login window appears. I press [ctrl+alt+delete] to open the window. Enter the information needed to log on my domain, and when I hit enter, the hang begins. The login window does not disappear, only changes to signify that it's accessing my server to log me in, after about 10 minutes, the window finally disappears and then only shows my background.
I can let this hang go for about 30-45 minutes and I still have nothing but the background showing on the desktop.

Here's a couple THINGS I've tried:

1) Logging into 3 different users, the problem still occurs.
2) Logging into the Local computer's Administrator account still has the issue happen.
3) Booting into safe mode and restoring the computer does not work, and the problem still occurs.

If there is anything I'm missing from the annoying issue, please respond accordingly. Thank you.

my computer is a HP PAVILLION 725n with windows xp HOME editionWhen you say you reinstalled your computer I assume that means you just installed a NEW Operating System. Solve : cant connect to the internet?

Answer»

i dont know why. its a hp pavilion desktop

what do i do. i downloaded the drivers from t he hp site but when i install them i get a message saying they are in some folder, but how does help me

also i downloaded the chipset drivers but what is the entry in device manager which allows me to update the chipset driver

the network icon SHOWS 'connected' and the two monitors in the icon blink, but i cant get to any web page. Says 'Internet EXPLORER cannot DISPLAY the webpage'

Did you just install windows?Try assigning it a static IP with your router/switch. Also make sure there isn't a computer naming conflict. Check the port it's plugged into. Try plugging in another device using the same cable/port.You can ignore the above posts. You need to go to the folders to which you downloaded the drivers (chipset driver first). Then double-click on the setup.exe file to install the drivers. You do NOT go into device manager to install the drivers. After you install all of the drivers, reboot.JJ: No I didnt just install windows, I was considering it but then I decided not to reinstall.

I have three laptops that connect WIRELESSLY to the router. I have this one laptop that I tried to connect wirelessly too, but it just wouldnt connect. So now Im trying a wired connection. All the computers are setup on DHCP so I dont know why I should have to set this one to a static IP.

But the network connection icon in the status bar now shows connected, and the two monitor of the icon are blinking, but there is still no internet connection. The status also shows download speeds of 3M and upload of 2M.
It connected to the internet suddenly, I didnt make any changes, but its working now

dont know w hat happened, but its all good
Now the router/modem went down. It is just illiminating a power led and a wireless led, but none of the networked computers can access the wireless network anymore. I spoke to att to see what was going on and they did some troubleshooting steps and concluded that the router/modem was bad. it is a 2wire router/model and why it went down all of a SUDDEN is a mystery.

Anyway, I went out and got a router, a cisco branded linksys one. I guess it didnt have a modem integrated into it, so I took out a modem I had, its motorola. I hooked everything up, but for some reason when I run the setup program that came with the router, it doesnt detect the internet connection, and it stalls. So how do I get the internet up and running. I have DSL by the way.

try to remove it and if the pc works fine then just ask for replacement in warrnty..........

or the last fix is reinstall the windows again..........

the best part is to JSU restore the windows as on the earlier time wins windows restore.........

Solve : My internet icon isn't showing up?

Answer»

When I upgraded to IE8, the icon labelled "Internet" in my Start Menu disappeared. The link is still there, and it works, but you'll notice in the attached picture that the icon doesn't show up. I installed SP3 and IE8 in the correct order, so that isn't the ISSUE. Please help!

[attachment deleted by admin]Right-click on START - Properties - Start Menu - Customize and switch between "large icons" and "small icons" - did that do anything?sorry, it didn't work... any other SUGGESTIONS?This is just trial & error to be honest. Right-click START - Properties - Customize. Uncheck Internet Explorer and OK your way out. Now go back and re-enable it.

If that doesn't work you can just uncheck it again and go to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" - right-click on iexplore.exe and pin it.

is there any way to go about it without having to pin "internet explorer" to the menu?
I'd like to AVOID having to lose the "internet" icon itselfQuote from: dorigod on September 14, 2009, 08:00:39 AM

When i put this all together and took my drive that has my xp on it(from the old com that i am using to write this)it said that windows was corrupted.I also get this message when i removed that drive.i get the same message when i try to load windows on the new drives and when i put in the disc with the drives on it that came with the mothboard.

I hope i gave enough info here and hopefully someone can save me.In case you need to know i have 2 1 TB drives,1 500GB drive and a 320GB drive in there now and none of them have windows on it.the 320 is the ata the other 3 are sata.
thank you for any and all help

I disconnected ata drives and tried to load windows on the sata drives and nothing happen.the same results when i try to load the drivers that come with the motherboardAre you trying to boot to the hard drive that was in the old computer? You will need to do a fresh install of windows. You cant swap in a hard drive that has windows on it and expect it to boot up.

Do you have a windows CD?I do have the os disc....i removed the ata drives and kept the 3 new sata drives in and when i put the os disc in nothing happens...these drives are new and there is nothing on them....when i turn the system on with the os disc in all that comes up is this on a black screen:
upper left corner of monitor:Hardware Monitor....
CPU Temp :24C CPU Fan :2848 RPM System Fan :N/A
CPU Voltage :1.376V Chip Voltage :1.120V +3.30V :3.376V
+12.0V :12.224V DDR Voltage :1.920V HT Voltage 1.136V
5VSB 5.107VDo you have the CD drive set as the first boot device?

Do other bootable CDs work?

What happens if you disconnect all of the hard drives and try to boot to the CD?I have the dvd/cd as the first boot device, but it seems that every time i go back into it i need to set it as the first one again.System always set the floppy(which i don't have)as the first one.The only other cd i tried other than windows was the driver cd that came with the board. When i unhook all drives i get the same as you see below, but if i hit ctl+alt+del nothing happens.usually it would restart the unit

I have 3 brand new sata drives in the unit.i have tried to go to the bios screen and "load optimal defaults" then on reboot selected the dvd/cd as a boot device and all i got was this

upper left corner of monitor:Hardware Monitor....
CPU Temp :24C CPU Fan :2848 RPM System Fan :N/A
CPU Voltage :1.376V Chip Voltage :1.120V +3.30V :3.376V
+12.0V :12.224V DDR Voltage :1.920V HT Voltage 1.136V
5VSB 5.107V
is it possible the board is bad?the whole time i have turn this system on i never heard any beeps coming from it.this is a vew dvd/cd...does that matter? Quote from: sammic on September 16, 2009, 05:05:09 AM

Solve : Problem with two XP installations?

Answer»

I installed WINDOWS XP on two different hard drives, but have since removed one hard drive. But now on startup it still gives a choice between the two O/S, after a few seconds selecting the one that doesn't exist anymore. This results in a black screen with nothing.

How can I remove this selection and boot the remaining XP installation by DEFAULT? EDIT the Boot.ini file to boot to the existing installation as default. Thanks

Little more info - where's the boot.ini file? Boot.ini is in the root of C:

Detailed instructions for editing boot.ini can be found here...

Good luckOr you can just open MSCONFIG, click on the boot.ini tab, and edit it from there.A little READING about edting the boot ini

Solve : USB device is not recognized?

Answer»

hello friends,
I am suffering with a serious problem, its a common one though and I found many matches searching on google but none of them could resolve my problem.

First of all i describe where the problem started from,

I have purchased a new laptop with windows vista and a new USB device. At first the USB device was working fine but today, when I plugged in the USB device I got the the message

"USB device is not recognized" and after a while the "installing SOFTWARE for new device" is displayed FOLLOWED by finished successfuly.

but I didn't get any removable device in windows explorer.

One more thing, I always get the icon for removable disc even though the USB device is not plugged in, may be its an image that I am unable to remove. when I right click on it and select remove, it give me message the device is ready to remove just like if any USB device is connected and I am trying to remove it.

After this when I tried to plug the same USB device to my desktop computer the same error message I got. while, before this the same device was working fine in my desktop computer.

I tried the following available solutions,

1 Uninstalling all the USB root HUB and restarting the system then waiting for window to install all the drivers. then replug the USB devices but got the same error message.

2. opening the device manager went on view menu and selected view hidden files and deleted all the images at the USB section but still unable to solve the problem.

3. shut down the computer and disconnect it from power source and started after 2 MINUTS (so that everything including motherboard should be restarted) but didn't get the problem solved.I got the problem, actually the ISSUE is with that USB device only while others are working fine.
but how to make that device working fine?

it is not being recognized anyway
What device is this ? ?sorry,
I am talking about USB Mass storage device(s)Which is what KIND of device ? ?
Anything from a camera to an external drive to an iPod to an MP3 player to a thumb drive can all be recognised as the same description...

Why the secrecy ? ?I am Sorry!!
I didn't think about all these devices, actually I am talking about Pen Drive

Repair shop time.
Boot to your XP CD and choose the first repair option. That will take you to the RECOVERY console. Once there run chkdsk /r

It will take a while to COMPLETE - let it do so. After it FINISHES enter the following two commands, pressing ENTER after each one:
fixboot

fixmbr

Post back and let us know if that helped. If not, we'll do a repair install. To me it sounds like your bios has reverted to the DEFAULT settings, I'd try a new battery first then reconfigure the bios.

Solve : Volume control?

Answer»

Hellow, Ive change my OS from Windows Vista to Windows Xp Pro and I got no sound now. I have tried to fix it for hours by googling and trying to find a solution. Ive downloaded plenty of softwares I found on guides from people to fix this PROBLEM but Its still not fixed.

I get the ERROR "no active mixerunits are available. You can install this by..." Or something similar to that. Ive tried what the error says but with no success.

The only sound i hear is "BEEP" And its really annoying . Please help me

And i dont know what ...sound card i have. I only know its Audio-Codec

Thanks in advance. You need to install both the chipset driver and the driver for you sound card. You can download and install Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) or Everest (http://www.lavalys.com/) to get a list of the hardware on your system. Thanks for the fast reply .
I did use both of them but I COULDNT figure out what kind of audio card I have.

Im missing a "PCI Device" and thought that could be whats causing this, I tried fixing it but its not working for some reason. Any Idea where I can download PCI Device?I don't know what you mean when you say you are missing a PCI device. Is this a genetic problem or do you see a MESSAGE SOMEWHERE on your system?

And again, you need to install the chipset driver first - did you do that?A missing PCI device means you DON'T have your MBoard chipset drivers installed...or there the wrong ones.
And these should go first so address this 1st.

How much RAM does your computer have?512 MB....I know I need to increase it.You can play with the size of your swap file until your find what's right for your machine. You can make it as large as you like. Give this a look:
http://winhlp.com/node/42Quote from: JJ 3000 on September 10, 2009, 12:47:27 AM

it will take longer to access the the data on the the storage drive, than if it was on the C drive.

Why?
JJ 3000,

Installed all the college work and everything directly into the D Drive, reading This, will complete what's left after finishing the read.

Thank you so much for all the detailed help.

So, have you noticed any difference in speed?Quote from: JJ 3000 on September 12, 2009, 02:19:21 AM
So, have you noticed any difference in speed?

Why do you think there would be? It can provide a performance boost... but probably tiny/undetectable & only if the partitions are on separate disks, and those disks are on different IDE channels if the machine uses PATA drives. Factors like fragmentation level, disk rpm, etc would need to be taken into account too. But I do not see why you think it would necessarily be slower.

JJ 3000, my computer seems all sorted out now, it's simple now and seems faster too.

Thank you so much( gotta click on Thank JJ 3000 for their post again) Ivy

I think you really need more RAM.

Virtual RAM (swap file / pagefile etc) is the poor man's version for people looking to kill time ! !

My machine had only 256 MB of RAM.
My cat lost a tin of cat meet so I could spend some pension on 1 GB extra RAM,
and my P.C. became supercharged - especially on start-up.

Right now Windows task manager is showing that I am using 352 MB, and since start-up the peak usage was 550 MB.
I am using Firefox with several tabs, and have 4 text files open for editing.
I suspect you would normally be using a lot more than that.

Now I have 1.25 GB of RAM, any * sensible application * can access a byte of data "instantly" (probably less than 1 microsecond to access the data on the silicon, plus a bit more as the operating system processes data requests and organises the transfer.)
With only 256 MB much of the data would not be on the silicon, but on a rotating magnetic disc, and if it spins at 5400 r.p.m. that is about 11 milliseconds per rotation,
so after umpteen mSec for the head to step to the correct track, it then has up to 11 mSec to wait for the rotation to BRING the desired data to where the head can read it.
You could easily suffer a latency of 20 mSec.

Fetching a byte of data from Virtual Ram could be 20,000 times slower than getting it from REAL RAM.

With a bit of luck when the first byte is eventually read from Virtual RAM then perhaps a few hundred ADJACENT bytes will also be put in a cache ready for instant access to an application that typically will want a BUNDLE of consecutive bytes. This is application dependant. I prefer certainty. REAL RAM makes a REAL improvement in REAL life.

* sensible application * - I am excluding anything which insists upon using pagefile/swap file instead of freely available REAL RAM.

512MB is an OK amount for XP, However, running a large number of big programs (such as Illustrator, photoshop, etc) at the same time means that it can't all fit in physical RAM at once; once allocated memory exceeds available physical memory Windows needs to prioritize what remains in physical RAM and what get's swapped out. basically, it's a fairly involved algorithm involving what code segments are run more often as well as what data is accessed- for example if you use a certain command often it will remain in memory; whereas the other portions of the process's code segment might be swapped to disk.

The way that windows loads a executable can be important in determining exactly what effect virtual memory has on it, as well as what effect it will have on virtual memory.

What it does is basically to "Map" the file in memory. Now this doesn't actually Allocate data within memory, but rather a file to be accessed via memory accesses rather then file I/O from the disk to the file; this is far EASIER both code-wise and performance wise. Rather then copy code into memory and run it, windows can simply point execution to the "WinMain()" function within the mapped program file (of course it's not quite that simple, since external links have to be resolved and so on, but sometimes things need to be omitted for brevity's sake). this way, the parts of the program itself that remain in RAM are kept in memory or swapped out based on the same logic that determines the same for data; that is, frequently accessed bits remain in RAM, whereas pages that are more infrequently used are more likely to be swapped out when memory get's low.

"When memory get's low" is a key phrase here; while many pages in a program file may be marked as "disposable" or swappable, Windows will still keep those bits out of Virtual memory for as long as possible; it is only when all physical RAM is committed and a program attempts to commit some more (or if a there is no contiguous block of free RAM that is large enough for the requested size a program wants) that windows takes a good hard look at the loaded pages. Basically the logic boils down to, "will I need this right away?" and makes a sort of guess based on how often it is accessed as well as the flags set on that particular memory page. For example pages can be set to never leave physical RAM, often programs will flag critical parts of their code with this to increase performance. It is obviously discouraged to do so with vast swaths of a program, since it restricts the abilities of the cache manager to do it's job.

This is where the mapped file I/O comes in- the file I/O itself is done "on the fly" as needed; in effect when an executable is loaded it is very nearly treated as a small, read-only swap file; in that data can be loaded from the executable, but never written, so that if it is swapped it is swapped to virtual memory. Some have queried why the executable might not be changed, and the reasons range from the obvious (do you really want your executables to be writing themselves?) to the more precise (after data is loaded from the executable- it is often "template" data, and is changed; often by the program itself, setting hooks and self-modifying code; the technique is called "copy on write" and is used quite extensively.

As a final note, RAM usage of two instances of the same application as reported by task manager are quite erroneous; the "private bytes" are not necessarily "Private" bytes, since the two applications share the same code and data; that is, their process address space is the same... until one instance changes code or data, at which point the touched page is duplicated, the write committed to the page and the processes memory map updated to refer to this "changed" page rather then the "template" one.Ever since "Windows for Workgroups 3.?" I have used a P.C. to create / edit / compile 'C' source code files for Real time embedded security SYSTEMS using 8 bit non-intel microprocessors, and to transfer those files to and from company servers.

What little I knew of swap files etc was in the early days when there were never any registry problems - there was no registry - life was simple.

Company policy was that software developers must focus upon enhancing with extra features our perfect real time systems that ran 24/7/365 year after year without a single B.S.O.D., and that any P.C. problem had to be referred to the I.T. department which specialised in B.S.O.D.s.

Now I am retired I learning a lot more about Windows.
Thank you for your information.

Solve : Outlook has disappeared when updating Word! Help!! All emails lost???

Answer»

Hi

I am having a slight nervous breakdown. I updated my Word 2003 to let me insert chemical equations for Uni... somehow, during the PROCESS, Microsoft Outlook has disappeared. Totally gone.

I have done a search for 'outlook' and I get a folder and a BUNCH of blue "MOF" files...?

There was a selection box during the 'Add components' window when I added the missing word component that said anything unchecked would be removed, but everything was checked, I DOUBLE checked that.

Before I do anything, is there a way to revert to the way my PC was an hour ago? My contacts, business EMAILS, all could be lost?

I am running Windows XP SP3, Outlook 2003.

Thanks, in frightfully nervous anticipation.

More info - a search in C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

has found a .pst file (my emails, I hope) but no .pab file (address book?)

It is my contacts that are important too, I hope they are possibly contained in the .pst file, it is 58mb.

Also, this is NOT Outlook Express, but Office Outlook 2003.

C
I should delete this POST, or will my update be helpful to stay on the forum? I found some very helpful tips on another PC forum...

I have found the .pst file which contains all my emails and contacts as well (as they were saved in Outlook and not as an Address Book, they are all one .pst file.)

I copied the .pst file to my D drive, I re-installed Outlook 2003 and moved the copied file back across to C:\Documents and Settings\myname\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

PRESTO! All emails, contacts and calendar items restored.

Mods - please feel free to delete this post if you see fit.

Solve : Two OS on same computer?

Answer»

Is it possible to run MAC OS and Windows OS on the same computer?VMWare Workstation will let you: http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/So will a Mac, I believe. Thanks for the quick response. I will try the website. Try Virtual PC also.Thanks. I have looked at both sites and neither says anything about MAC and Windows OS on the same computer. ONE is a windows website.I know it has something to do with partitioning my hard drives, but the problem is that my computer brand new out of the box(about the same time XP was released) did not come with an OS program disc. It came with XP, but I had to burn a copy of my hard drive, well, how do I know that actually worked without trying it, and will I be stuck if it doesn't work? I am guessing it would be easier at this point to buy a new computer with the OS that I want, but would still like to know if MAC and Windows can run on the same computer.
Sorry if this sound repetitive. http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Vmware_how_toJust curious...why a MAC OS ? ?
Even in a Virtual setup it's going to be a struggle to get it up and running...thanks for all the quick responses. I was wanting something other than Windows, because of all the problems i've had with it, and thought if I could use the windows based computer and just install MAC on it, it might work. I wasn't sure of how to go about doing that. I was thinking maybe of doing away with XP and strictly using MAC OS, but wasn't sure if the computer I already had would accept the MAC OS. This is the first place where I have been able to find the most and best answers, and can't thank you guys enough. do you think I could use this computer to run MAC OS withouth the XP on it? Besides MAC OSs are cheaper than windows.Quote from: luvmyputer on September 13, 2009, 02:20:19 PM

Besides MAC OSs are cheaper than windows.

lol wut?Not the computers, the OS is cheaper, so my MAC user friends have said. LOL

I am just sick of all the problems that come with using Windows. on the other hand... you have to pay for updates...

those things add up. Or they do if Apple is doing their job. The reason they are acclaimed as "more secure" is not because they are "more secure" but rather because they are less targeted; same story with Linux.

Additionally the "problems" you face with windows won't necessarily go away, especially if you try to run a Mac OS on hardware not specifically desgned for it. UNLIKE windows the Mac OS is... well designed for Mac computers, and therefore is far less robust with hardware changes. I might also add that it's hardware/driver incompatibility that cause most windows issues (not counting badly written software) so it stands to reason that since Mac OS has far less (probably no) testing with non-standard hardware configurations and windows is TESTED extensively on thousands of machine configurations which one will have more issues with slightly deviant hardware.Quote
(not counting badly written software)
Explain please. What do you mean?

Somewhere Bill Gates said that Apple should license its software.
Was that in Hard Drive?

Solve : Sleep mode sometimes freezes?

Answer»

I see that vista and win 7 are having similar issues. I am new here so sorry if it's a DUPE post.

A few days ago a problem surfaced with the pc, when the sleep mode would kick in, I would not be able to wake it without a reboot. I went in and turned off anything that had to do with sleep mode. I only have the screen save kick in after 20 min. Everything else is set to never. I even went into the bios and made sure that I had wake from mouse and wake from any key enabled. Yesterday I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled XP. I downloaded the latest nvidia drivers and all seemed good. I let the pc run all night long and came down to check this morning and everything was fine. I try to play an online game which USUALLY runs fine, about 3 min in the good ol' sleep mode issue presents itself. I checked the event viewer but wasn't sure which AREA I need to focus on. Could this be a vid card issue? I REALLY don't want to replace both cards but will if I have to.

thanksIf it's desktop, don't use any power saving features. They rarely work 100%.the only thing enabled is screen saver after 20 min. It only does it when playing games.Quote

Solve : How to identify actual operating system working?

Hi,
I am a regular user of a computer but am no way stretch of imagination a genius. I have a Dell INSPIRON 600m. Two years ago, I had my hard disk DIVIDED into two subdrives C and G. I was also in the process of reformatting my disk and because of something I had to abort my reformatting work in the middle and then restart. As a result, now I have 1.5 operating systems on my laptop. It always give me an option during booting up to choose from the two operating system. Understandably, if I choose the wrong one, it does not boot up properly.
Now, the question is "How to identify and remove that 0.5 operating system from my computer? It is occupying space on my 30GB hard drive and making it sluggish to run since, all of this 1.5 crap in on my c drive, where all the temporary internet files also get stored and I have to sit and maintain this comp regularly to keep it in running condition.
Please help.
Thanks in Advance.
Both Windows ? ?
If so you can check in Windows Explorer to see how they are listed...
For example it may say WinNT and then have a 2nd folder CALLED Windows...let us know.

You COULD also right clik any shortcut on the working 1/2 select Properties and then Target...make it a Windows component to be sure...
The target line will give you the full path of the shortcut.

If it's Win and Linux i would back up do a complete wipe and start over as there is no easy clean way on this one.Quote from: rajulteredesai on September 13, 2009, 07:52:19 AM

Boot to the OS you want to keep (what OS is it, by the way?). Open Windows Explorer and delete the other OS. Change the bootloader to reflect the change and format the other PARTITION.

Solve : Repair Option On Wireless Network Runs What Windows Program??

When you RIGHT click on the wireless network icon in the sys tray, and select "Repair" what file or program does it run?

Is it some executable in the system32 folder?

Like:
run cmd

Actually it runs...
IPconfig /all

IPConfig /renew.

But it seems to run all those with some little exe file, not using the command prompt. There must be some little exe file in system32 that runs those commands.

The problem I am having is, everytime I start the computer, it never connects to my wireless network. I have to right click on the icon in the sys tray and click "repair" EVERY SINGLE TIME.
That usually always fixes it and gets it connected to the wireless network.

Something is probably wrong with something, but I don't care at this point....I'll just find whatever that "repair" points to and add it in the registry at STARTUP....so I don't have to keep right clicking it and selecting it every time I start the computer.

Do you mean "network connections"
If thats what you mean....then yes...I've already been to that and its ADDED to the wireless networks.....

It sees it at startup....it just ALWAYS says limited or no CONNECTIVITY....Try relocating the router and/or move any other wireless devices such as cordless/cell PHONES out of the area...

Solve : missing compressed files option from xp?

Answer»

I'm missing my compressed file option from disk clean up in windows xp. This was due to a system file cleaner I downloaded and as a result it wiped out my compressed files, which I believe is why my office 2003 won't start, it's prompting me for the cd to install office 2003 which I don't have. Can anyone tell he me how to restore my compressed files back to disk cleanup?Do you have an XP CD ? ?

If so go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
Have the CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it run to completion...remove the CD and re-boot.Yes I doI did what you said and nothing happensRepair Install of XP

I suggest reading it thru to get a clear understanding of the process paying special ATTENTION to the warnings...
Also print out a copy for reference.

Done properly all your data and apps will be intact and XP will be fixed...
Done improperly all your data and apps will be GONE but you will have a clean install of XP

Best of Luck.I have 2 thoughts on the very first post :-

1. If all compressed files have been deleted, I very much doubt the computer would boot !
Problems with Office 2003 are the last thing you would see.

2. Some downloadable "System File Cleaners" deliberately do more harm than good,
are you sure you are still free of malware ?

Alan
the PC would boot just fine SANS compressed install files, and Office, and various other applications (in general MSI installer PROGRAMS) would have issues starting.

That being said if they were deleted by some other program then there would be no reason for disk cleanup to display them- since they don't exist.BC_Programmer

Thanks. I far prefer portable software to anything installed,
and I hate anything that uses MSI installers because of the bloat.
You have just given me another reason to avoid MSI installers like the plague.

I consider it absolutely disgusting that M.$ OFFICE can be installed and then refuse to run if its installation package is lost,
but I guess that is "par for course" with M.$ who .... I cannot foul my keyboard with my thoughts on M.$.
I am so thankful I use Free of charge and Portable (non-installed) Open Office.

Regarding compressed files.

I insist that I am right, but so are you !

It depends upon what is meant by compressed files.

To me "compressed files" means files in a NTFS partition that get compressed because they are rarely used, but can be so important that Windows Files Protection refuses to trust Windows Operating system and re-validates the compressed file, and if it does not like it then insists upon being given the Windows Installation Disc, after which it is reinstalled from the disc and an extra copy put in system32\dllcache,
effectively doubling the space taken instead of halving it. I cannot forget such things because Windows came without a disc and was pre-installed on my SECONDHAND P.C., so I have suffered greatly from such things.

In this particular case we know so LITTLE. We have not been told how many were deleted, nor where they were. We are guessing in the dark.
Patio requested "type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter."
and we only know that "nothing happens".
Did sfc stall and do nothing because its executables were amongst those deleted,
or did it announce "Nothing to do", or was it some other sort of "nothing happened"?

Alan

Solve : Unable to boot up laptop?

Answer»

Hi,

I am helping a friend who has a Acer Travelmate 2413LM, Intel Celeron M Processor 370. Running Windows XP with Explorer 7 which we are unable to start up. Either freezes on the windows logo screen, or if you can get to the safe mode options, select safe mode, the list of drivers runs then freezes. The comp doesn't get PAST either of these points.

I have tried to boot in safe mode and tried all the combinations: safe mode, LAST known good config, reboot, start windows normally noene of these work.

I managed to get into the Windows recovery partition (alt F10) and tried the factory default but I had an error message saying internal error 8027 an internal consistency has been detected, if prob is persistant then contact symantic tech support.

I then tried with the back up discs that came with laptop - ran through these fine, started copying files and has frozen at 40%. It stayed like this most of yesterday until I turned it off.

Turned it on this morning to see what would happen, logo screen LOADED, a blue screen flashed past then went back to the safe mode OPTION screen.

Got no further? Please close this thread as I found alternatiove help.

Many thanks

Answer» HP pavilion a420n desktop doesnt even see the wireless USB adapter that I plug into the slot. I have plugged the wireless adapter into all the slots, but it isnt recognized, that is there no ding noise that you normally get. I plugged the same adapter into a different computer and it is recognized and the search for driver dialog box comes up.

I need to connect to the internet to download some utilities to clean up the computer. Connecting it with a wire is not an option as the place Im in only lets me put a router far away which I cant get to
Is there a driver that comes with it that needs to be installed?there is, and I put the disk in, and the PROGRAM is installed. But when I run it, it says 'plug in the adapter and then click continue' but even after I plug in the adapter, it still USB adapter not detected

Funny thing is earlier when I booted into safemode and plugged in the adapter, it was recognized. Now that Im in normal windows mode, the usb adapter is not recognized

what is going on
Look in device manager - any yellow exclamation marks?i WENT to device manager but there is nothing there. There arent any devices or anything else listed, its just blank. This is weird, the CD drives work but they arent even listed. Neither is the HD, or anything else.

What to do? Will the recovery partition help me , and if so how do I use it, I dont have any disks.
Go to control panel - administrative tools - services - and set the Plug and Play service to automatic. Reboot. Now check device manager and also check the usb ports - they probably work fine now.did that but that didnt solve the problem, it said the required service was not installed. But I fixed it now, got the info from

http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-xp-tips/device-manager-empty-or-blank/

its good to have people to talk to on this forum otherwise i would have ended trying to reinstall the whole OS and lose all my data

thanks
We would have gotten there next, but I'm glad you got it up and running well , actually its up in dedvice manager now and everything and the drivers have been loaded but its not picking up the wireless signal. This computer which is right next to it, is picing it up perfectly. Whats up with that
Also when I go to Network connections I dont see an icon for the adapter
Re-install the driver for the wireless adapter ...re-boot and then check Wireless Network Setup Wizard...okay i did that but without having an adaptor present in network connections, how will wireless setup help me? The adapter shows up in the device manager and is enabled, but it wont show up in the network connections listing. Anyway I went through the STEPS, but what then, I still dont have internet connectivity
What else can I try
The setup wizard will locate all local signals...okay i did do the wireless network setup, but still no connectivity. The thing is , when I boot up, I get the bubble on the lower right that says 'Wireless networks detected....', but when I click on the bubble, I get the message 'No wireless networks in range'

And on another note, what is wireless zero configuration, and do I need to enable that or not if given the option?

Will loading the wireless network driver from HP via a USB make this wireless thing work?

Solve : Crashing within a few seconds of booting up and logging in.?

Answer»

Another one of my rigs is crashing within a few seconds of booting up and logging in.

First the system specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood @ 2.8GHz (Stock Clock) with Stock Heatsink & Fan
Mobo: BIOSTAR P4M900M4
RAM: PNY Optima 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 667
Video Card: ATi Radeon HD 3650 512MB
Sound Card: Intergrated - Realtek Audio ALC861VD
TV Tuner: Leadtek Tuner Card TV2000XP
Hard Drives: Western Digital Caviar 320GB 7200rpm SATA
PSU: MSI TurboStream 500W
OS: Windows XP Home SP2 32-bit

Now the problem: upon booting the system and logging in, it will crash usually within a few seconds of logging in. Though, sometimes it crashes after being logged in for a few minutes and sometimes it doesn’t even get to the login screen but crashes right after POST. Most of the time it crashes and there is what seems to be a 5 second long BIOS beep code. There isn’t a BIOS beep code all the time, sometimes it would just freeze and lock up. Sometimes it would even crash in safe mode. System restore works temporarily, as in, I do a system restore and it will work for 1 or 2 days then the problem would start again.

At first I ignored the beep code and assumed it was Windows, so I created a new partition on my hard drive and installed another instance of Win XP. I didn’t want to reformat because I still need time to backup my data. At first it seemed like it worked but soon, the problem started again, so I realized it wasn’t Windows or software related but probably hardware.

I then DECIDED to open the case and clean the inside since I figured it might be an overheating issue. It wasn’t very dirty inside as I had just cleaned it a few months ago. I cleaned it yesterday with a can of compressed air and I also checked the connections and RAM and it seemed okay. So far it hasn’t been crashing, but I ain’t holding my breath.

Also using a program called Hardware Monitor I’ve been monitoring the temperatures and volts. The temperatures seem to be okay. As for the volts, I don’t know what to look for so I’ll post what it says:
ITE IT87 hardware monitor
Voltage sensor 01.52 Volts [0x5F] (CPU VCORE)
Voltage sensor 11.63 Volts [0x66] (VIN1)
Voltage sensor 23.26 Volts [0xCC] (+3.3V)
Voltage sensor 35.05 Volts [0xBC] (+5V)
Voltage sensor 412.10 Volts [0xBD] (+12V)
Voltage sensor 5-7.68 Volts [0x78] (-12V)
Voltage sensor 6-0.45 Volts [0x7] (-5V)
Voltage sensor 74.68 Volts [0xAE] (+5V VCCH)
Voltage sensor 83.30 Volts [0xCE] (VBAT)
Temperature sensor 226°C (78°F) [0x1A] (TMPIN2)
Fan sensor 05357 RPM [0x7E] (FANIN0)

Also just now I decided to look up the BIOS beeps and it seems it has something to do with the CPU or a process error. In the mobo manual it says it’s a CPU overheating issue. It says to remove the power cord from the PSU and wait a few seconds then plug it BACK and in a reboot or clear CMOS and then boot up. There are instructions in the manual how to clear CMOS but I’ve never done that before and I’m a bit nervous that it might cause other problems.

Also it should be noted that this CPU is pretty old, it’s from a Gateway system back in 2003. That computer’s mobo failed so I decided to reuse the CPU and bought this cheap Biostar mobo and put this rig together last summer. It’s been working fine until now. The CPU has never been OC’ed and I’ve ALWAYS used the stock HSF. If more info is needed on the CPU I could post info from CPU-Z or something. As for airflow in the case, it’s not very GOOD. I do have a 80mm front intake fan but there are no “grills” or openings in the front of the case to actually intake air. There is no rear exhaust fan. However the PSU has 2 80mm fans on it, the standard one facing the rear and one facing the CPU.

After typing all this I guess the problem maybe the CPU overheating but I’m sort of looking for a second opinion if I’m wrong. If it is indeed the CPU overheating I’m looking for advice on what to do, besides cleaning out the fan/heat sink and reapplying thermal paste. I’m not really sure if I should buy a new HSF for the CPU as this is a secondary rig and I’d rather save my money spending more on an old Pen 4 CPU. Also does anyone have any advice on improving airflow in the rig?

These are some of the thing I know before it cause the problem. My OS. XP Pro. SP2. P3. Hoping to hear from you all for the next course of action to be taken. Thanks.Do you have a disk in the cd drive? If so, remove it and try to boot again. Also let us know how much RAM is in this machine and check and see how much free space is on your C: drive...Thanks Allan there is no CD in the drive. Patio my RAM installed is 524 MB. and I have more then 20GB. of free space. I do hope to hear from you all on what the next step to take. I tried again earlier and it continued to have a long beep.

Solve : Isolating windows to one core?

Answer»

My system
Windows xp service pack 3
Duel core processor
4gigabyte ram
Me and a group of friends have been looking into isolating windows to one core on a duel core computer but we get access denied when doing it through the task manager PROCESSES I have researched this and got little in the way of results one person SAID that windows systems demand access to both cores but I want to isolate it to one dose anyone know a way we can do that. The REASON we want to do this is primarily so we can run another operating system independent of windows at the same time but on the same computer and so a program on the second system can make use of both cores but not show up on windows processes.
I can tell you now I have accesses to administrative privileges and enabled them in the task manager I can change the affinity on all other programs.
2 OS's cannot be ran simultaeanously...we are looking into using Hardware virtualization to emulate a second system but this is not the only reason we want to limit what core windows can use
i also found BOCHS at bochs.sourceforge.net that sounds like it might helpSee Here...thank you so muchNo problem...and Welcome Aboard...

Although i still don't believe you can run 2 OS's but i'm far from an expert on Hardware virtualisation. Please let us know how it turns out.See the "/NumProc="and "/OneCPU" switches within Boot INI Options Reference to control how the operating system is invoked.Quote from: patio on September 12, 2009, 04:30:27 PM

SMP (SYMMETRIC Multi Processing) has been around for 10-15 years. Some did run 2 OS's at the same time, but neither were Windows. They were specialized versions of UNIX and targeted platforms were not PC's since cpu's were not capable at the time. First multi-processor PC was the Intel Pentium-Pro, a few motherboards had 2 sockets. Other platforms were more suitable for multi-processors with bus-mastering.

You're right about the "hardware virtualization". SMP's were used extensively in military flight simulators.

Solve : Corrupted file and can't get windows cd to repair it?

Answer»

After reinstalling windows XP on my computer, the following message came up:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I try using the windows CD to repair it but it keeps freezing up on SETUP screen when its loading.

What should i do?
Boot to your CD and select Recovery Console.

Type the following:

REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM SYSTEM.OLD
COPY C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR\SYSTEM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIGI can't get into windows setup, that's the problem. I keep freezing on the blue screen i posted above. Thanks for replying. Borrow another XP CD...the versions have to match though...And sorry - you clearly said you couldn't get into setup & I told you to boot to setup anyway. My error. What was the REASON for reinstalling, to start with?
It may be bad CD, as patio said, or you have some hardware problem (HD, RAM).

Solve : WinMgmt *.MOF and Catroot2\dberr errors, oem43.cat and 6 MB catdb bloat anomaly.?

Answer»

I think a bit of XP Home died when Comodo Firewall 3.05 was uninstalled on 01/01/2009.

At 16:47:31.pagefile.sys was initialised upon a reboot to complete the removal.
From 16:48:53 to 16:49:13 there were 51 off new *.MOF files in System32\wbem\AutoRecover
Before this incident there were only 11 files with very old time stamps.
Of these 11 :-
4 survived without change
7 were updated and halved in size, and given new timestamps
and 44 brand new files arrived from nowhere.

At 16:49:12 Application Event log shows 4 off WinMgmt errors (while recovering repository file)
C:\WINDOWS\MICROSOFT.NET\FRAMEWORK\V1.1.4322\ASPNET.MOF
C:\AC30D119A40F2C8C8708A20576\I386\LICWMI.MOF
C:\WINDOWS\MICROSOFT.NET\FRAMEWORK\V3.0\WINDOWS COMMUNICATIONFOUNDATION\SERVICEMODEL.MOF
C:\WINDOWS\MICROSOFT.NET\FRAMEWORK\V2.0.50727\ASPNET.MOF

Before installing new protection I inspected the event log for errors and saw this WinMgnt stuff, and realised that, much as I feared, COMODO had hooked into the system to resist eviction by malware, and hung on too hard during removal.
I hoped that "while recovering repository file" indicated some sort of recovery process,
and I rebooted several times without further errors and hoped that indicated full recovery had been achieved.

I then installed Comodo CIS v3.10 (Firewall plus Anti-virus etc.) and all seemed well.

Several days later I compared C:\ with an image taken just before removal.
That is when I spotted those 51 off new *.MOF files and guessed they related to 4 WinMgmt errors.
Then horror of horrors, I saw C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\dberr.txt going berserk.
Suddenly, after Comodo CIS v3.10 was fully installed and rebooted, it reported, e.g.
CatalogDB: 21:21:22 09/09/2009: File #2 at line #1236 encountered error 0x00000057
CatalogDB: 21:51:32 09/09/2009: File #2 at line #1236 encountered error 0x00000057
There are perhaps half a dozen such errors upon a reboot, and then at 1810 second intervals another such error is appended.

In-spite of all these errors, it still captured the normal information from a Patch Tuesday UPDATE a few weeks ago.
I see no further system / application event log errors.

It looks like everything sort of works, but it just isn't right, and I don't know if XP will capsize and sink.

I think a bit of XP was torn out when Comodo 3.05 was removed, and nothing needed that bit of XP until Comodo 3.10 was installed, and then the dberr.txt errors started and continue no matter what I have done since.

Comodo support have admitted to the "File #2 at line #1236" errors as something that has been seen with Vista, but not with XP, and advised that the subsequent v3.11 has fixed the problem. I updated to v 3.11 and this problem continues in XP.

I was advised it could be catroot2 corruption. I learnt to delete Catroot2 and allow it to rebuild. No real change but further anomalies arose ! !

Catroot2 originally held
...\System32\CatRoot2\{00AAC56B-CD44-11D0-8CC2-00C04FC295EE}
13/08/2009 17:05 1,056,768 catdb
18/06/2007 19:53 8 TimeStamp
...\System32\CatRoot2\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}
13/08/2009 17:05 1,056,768 catdb
19/08/2008 12:45 8 TimeStamp
...\System32\CatRoot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
13/08/2009 17:05 7,348,224 catdb
31/07/2009 10:53 8 TimeStamp

After using "net stop cryptsvc" and deleting catroot2 etc, after a reboot I had only
...\System32\CatRoot2\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}
13/08/2009 19:06 1,056,768 catdb

After a second reboot I had an additional
...\system32\CatRoot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
13/08/2009 21:35 1,056,768 catdb

That seems to have removed 6 MB of bloat from ...(F750... ! !
Further reboots made no change - still no ...{00AA...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} holds 220 files.
Apparently OBSOLETE and unused and almost empty are :-
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{00AAC56B-CD44-11D0-8CC2-00C04FC295EE}
18/06/2007 19:53 8 TimeStamp
16/05/2007 13:49 11,418 WLSetup.cat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}
19/08/2008 12:45 8 TimeStamp

I have removed these "obsolete" folders, keeping only ...\system32\CatRoot\{F750...
and again deleted catroot2 and rebooted, and again after the first reboot there was
...\System32\CatRoot2\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}
which surprised me since the corresponding folder had been removed from catroot,
and after the second reboot there was
...\System32\CatRoot2\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}.

"File #2 at line #1236" errors continued as before.

I restored Catroot and Catroot2 from an Acronis image taken just before anything was removed.
"File #2 at line #1236" errors just keep on going on and on.

Is there a quick fix to this please ?
Should I enter a LOOP :-
{
Restore the system to the original image taken before the removal of the old protection;
Remove original protection
} REPEAT until nothing is broken inn XP ?

One long long standing anomaly, where on earth is "oem43.CAT"
The last dberr.txt log before things went bad was
CatalogDB: 10:49:57 31/07/2009: ADDING Catalog File: oem43.CAT
CatalogDB: 10:49:58 31/07/2009: DONE Adding Catalog File: oem43.CAT
CatalogDB: 10:51:18 31/07/2009: Adding Catalog File: oem43.CAT
CatalogDB: 10:51:19 31/07/2009: DONE Adding Catalog File: oem43.CAT
CatalogDB: 10:52:40 31/07/2009: Adding Catalog File: oem43.CAT
CatalogDB: 10:52:40 31/07/2009: DONE Adding Catalog File: oem43.CAT
CatalogDB: 10:53:07 31/07/2009: Adding Catalog File: KB972260-IE7.cat
CatalogDB: 10:53:07 31/07/2009: DONE Adding Catalog File: KB972260-IE7.cat

C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} holds :-
oem0.cat through to oem56.cat, with a few gaps.
it holds oem42.cat and oem44.cat but absolutely no oem43.cat.

These "DONE Adding Catalog File: oem43.CAT" messages have happened for many Patch Tuesdays,
and none of the Acronis images from this periods of time have captured any oem43.cat.

Incidentally, why did Catroot and Catroot2 start with 3 off ..\{*} folders ?
Is it related to SP1 and SP2 and SP3 being installed at different times ?
And why does a rebuild of Catroot2 never create ...\{00AAC56B... etc,
but always creates the other two ?
regardless of whether Catroot holds only the relevant ..\{F750E6C3 or all 3 of the ...\{*}

If I ever get this fixed, and Catroot2 is as it was, will it be safe to have XP rebuild it and presumable prune the 6 MB space and time wasting bloat in 7,348,224 catdb
and to lose the apparently redundant ...\{00AAC56B... etc. ?

I am using XP Home edition with SP3.

I can restore the system from various Acronis partition images, including :-
Before removal of old protection ;
After installing new protection and before I knew there was a problem ;
After I knew there was a problem and before I started trying to fix it.

I would appreciate any ADVICE upon fixing this, or I will continue to worry about when XP will crash.

Regards
Alan

Solve : mailshell.net - is this due to me running AVG antivirus.?

Answer»

Hi Folks,
My Internet provider, Rogers is going to shut me down BECAUSE this mailshell.net item is slowing their computers!! ( I can paste the exact lines of numbers and dots that Rogers sent me)
Haven't a clue what they are TALKING about but on calling them they said it was between me and AVG.
AVG since I installed it 4 months ago has REALLY slowed MY computer.
Got AVG to run a scan on my computer but haven't heard back for 5 days now.
-I found a thread in 2008 but couldn't access info on "post further down".

Anyone had similar " mailshell.net " concerns first your isp sucks because software on your end couldnt slow down there end
and even if it did they want your money so they dont care about speed
i cannot SEE the connection between AVG and mailshell.net and much less your isp
if AVG has any email antispam disable it and hope it will go away
Hi - thanks for your reply ...

What will the anti-spam button do to my computer security.
Right now this button is ticked in the list of AVG items.
I will untick it if you say so ... the impact will be minmal
except maybe your isp will stop complainingI can comment first hand on this.

Since June and on three separate occasions, our Internet service was suspended by Rogers - they reported a SpyBot on ONE of our home computers that was generating DDoS attacks. Anti-virus and all malware scans always ran clean. After the latest suspension, Rogers reported that AVG was the culprit. We have AVG Internet Security 8.5. I reported this to AVG around two weeks ago and this was escalated in both organizations. Today I received notification that the problem was now addressed entirely. And, you can use all the AVG anti-spam functions - you do not need to turn anything off.

AVG ordinarily runs fine on all our computers and their support staff and management have been exceptional and proactive in diagnosing the problem.

This is a brief explanation from a senior AVG person: In very short, the reason was the way how the Mailshell component checks for spam (using a reputation service) that also triggered some security checks on the Rogers side.

If your account has been suspended, and your problem is identical to ours, then call the Security department at Rogers. They should be aware of this now. If your problem persists, add a reply and I'll look in occasionally. I found your post and subscribed after Googling the keywords today.

Hope that helps.Hi David
Thank you so much for your reply ...
The elusive Rogers Network - I would like to talk with you re: persons to contact both at Rogers and AVG ...as I have not had any Replies from either party.
Just threatening emails and persons with no interest in solving the problem at Rogers - AVG reviewed everything on my computer and said it was OK !!!
Can you drop me a reply at : [emailprotected] and we can discuss?

My thanks to this Web Forum for being able to "help" a not so informed computer user:-)

Solve : Check boxes in tables in MS Word?

Answer»

Hi. 1ST time Forum user here. I run MS OFFICE 2007 in XP. I previously used Office/Windows 2000. I used to be able to (1) insert check boxes in the tables I create in Word, and then optionally (2) insert an X in the box where applicable. I cannot find how to do either of these 2 OPERATIONS in Word 2007, so I am having to cut and past from a previous doc to achieve this. Anyone help?Welcome to the forum.

Click on Developer to open the Developer ribbon. In the Controls section, you should see an icon for Legacy Tools. In my Word 2007, it's the fourth item to the right on the second row of icons. You'll see a Check Box option under Legacy Forms and another option under ActiveX Controls. I'm not sure which you need but I hope this helps. Thanks for the welcome Soybean and your reply. I've found the checkbox insertion icon under the Developer Tab and added it to the the Quick Access Toolbar as I use it all the time. Still cannot however find how to insert an X into the box when requiredI just now found out how to make the check box changeable. For details, I suggest you use Word's Help and search on Add protection to a form. When the search results appear, you should see Create forms that users complete in Word near the top of the list. Click it to VIEW the contents. [The key step here is to "protect" the form. Once you do that, it should work the way you want.] In the Help contents, the key info on protecting is under a section titled Prepare a form to be filled out. Thank Soybean. Sadly that was way over my head/capabilities to understand....BUT... I have found the answer elswhere.... After inserting the Check Box in the Form, double-clicking on the Box will bring up the Check Box Form Field Options window. Clicking on 'Checked' in the Default Value puts an X in the Box which is exactly what I want to DOI had thought about telling you about that way to mark the check box. You can do that but I'm sure you'll agree it's not really the most desirebable way to do it. Indeed, that technique is not really intended to be used as a way to check or clear the box. The Check Box Form Field Options window is for setting the default status of the check box, just as stated in that window.

If you can learn to protect the from, then the box will no longer have the gray background, which indicates it's not in normal usable status, and you or another user will, indeed, be able to check or clear to box as it should work.

This reference contains the same info on this topic as Help in Word but this may be easier to follow: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100307461033.aspx. The parts you need to focus on are Add protection to a form and prepare it for distribution and Prepare a form to be filled out. The website also has 3 videos you can watch. I think the third one could be very helpful to you. Protecting the Form was not the problem. Inserting a Check Box in the Form and then inserting an X in the Check Box where applicable was what I was seeking to do

Appreciate your helpQuote from: Gavinz on September 12, 2009, 05:55:24 AM

Protecting the Form was not the problem. Inserting a Check Box in the Form and then inserting an X in the Check Box where applicable was what I was seeking to do
Gavinz, you're missing my point. I know what you want to do and, as I've stated, I know you can insert a Check Box and you can make an X appear in it by going into the Check Box Form Field Options window.

But, that does NOT create a properly working Check Box. Suppose you were creating this form for others to use. Are you going to give them instructions on changing the Check Box by your method? That would look amateurish.

To get the Check Box functioning properly, you DO need to protect the form. Applying protection is the key to making the Check Box function the way it's supposed to function. If you still don't get this point, I don't know how else to explain it. Let me reiterate one more time, you need to protect the form if you want a properly functioning check box.If you're willling to accept an amateurish work-around approach by using your method, then that's your choice.

Solve : boot configuration problems?

Answer»

hello, I need help fixing a problem I think I created:

2 weeks ago my computer crashed and wouldnt reboot it would get to the welcome window then turn off again. I attempted to fix it by messing around with the boot priorty settings and some things in BIOS...when that didnt work I removed my original XP program and installed XP Home Edition; now I can only boot from the install disk. if I turn off my puter I must go through the entire install THING and continue to lose my files and data.

secondary problem is that my puter has been split into 2 partitions with XP being on the second...I have no clue what I did and I need help....SOS REPAIR Install of XP

Of course after doing this i would suggest USING an imaging app to create a workable image of XP as is then wiping the drive completely and re-imaging it...
This will save you a ton of work...ok dont want to sound dumb and I really need and appreciate the help, but I cant make heads or tails of what you sent me....first; the install does finish and I get a new version of XP Home Edition each time I am forced to reinstall (if I turn off my puter)...my problem is that once installed, if I turn off the puter, Windows wont boot from my selected boot priorities( presently RPL something) and forces me to boot using the CD...the last time I did this I did the REPAIR ( by pressing R) and when it booted it had saved my data... however I think this is where I got the partition problem... I would like to KNOW what my proper boot priortiy settings should be and how do I get rid of the split personality (partition)Go back into BIOS and select the "set to DEFAULT setting" option. (reboot)

Follow this link to fix the NTLDR problem. Even if the NTLDR is not missing. It should fix any corruption.
http://www.quickonlinetips.com/archives/2005/12/ntldr-is-missing-press-any-key-to-restart/

Once this work (if It works) do the following:
Insert the Win XP ( Home Edition or Pro) install disc. Do if u were going to install XP, follow directions there will be a option to reformat. DO NOT SELECT this option, u will go to a option that says found previous XP install. Select this option and choose fix this install. This will fix the the Win XP presently install and will not delete any files. Write back and let us know if u r up and running.

Solve : want to transfer files?

Answer»

i have two laptops a dell INSPIRON an an ibm thinkpad. I have some music files on both computers. I want to transfer my music files from my old computer to my new one, that is from the ibm to the dell. One way is obviously to transfer the files to an external drive and then back onto the new computer. But is a USB to USB transfer possible with just a regular USB cord
No.
It requires a Bi-directional USB cord to do so and you then have to set up a network connection.

Using a simple USB cord will damage both machines...crap,, so I guess the best way for me to do it without a USB cable is to use an external drive r ight
Or UPLOAD them to a file storage site on the web...there are FREE ones and then DLoad them to the other machine.
Or burn them to a CD/DVD and copy them that way...
Or copy them to a USB thumb drive (cheaper than an external) and MOVE them that way.
Or setup a network connection thru your router and/or wirelessly...wow the wireless connection thing will probably work for me, but how do i set it up
please let me know
i went to network setup wizard, and ran the thing on both computers to get them both on the network. However , even though I can see both computers on the network from e ither computer, I cant browse the folders of one computer from t he other one, but i can browse the other one from this one

whats going on? When I click on the folder of the non browsable computer, I get a dialog box for a login and password

why is this happening
i got it done, just took some research, i had to turn on the file and printer sharing
Good News...and way to stick to it til a solution was reached.
Thanx for letting us know...

Solve : I got me a used computer?

Answer»

Is there any way I can copy old applications from my previous computer to the new one, *I have several games, some applications like microsoft office, etc
No, you need to install programs. So, you need the installation CD or installation file you downloaded and saved to CD, flash drive, etc., and you need to GO install the software on the newly acquired computer.i would do that if I had the installation disks . Problem is my old computer came preloaded with the programs and I dont really want to have to buy the program disks again when all I want to do is to PUT them onto my new computer. Is there any way, I was thinking if making a DISK image to copy an OS would work, then why wont this? But how do I just get images of application files, and more so, where would I find the application setup files
You could in fact create an image of the old drive and copy it to the new machine...
However if the OS is anything later than WinME you would have to do a REPAIR Install to get it to run properly...

Post back with what you decide and we'll go from there...

Apps cannot simply be copied and expected to run properly...this is by design.

was the power supply fan
the green light right above my turn on button
tried another power supply
and i got the hardrive green light to turn on
but it wasn't making no noise
and the cdrom woundn't turn on if i unplug the cd rom but leave the power cord pluged into it the cd rom it will turn on do you think i fried something other than my power supply.

the only thing that looks like it's getting power is the green light above were i turn on my computer and the power supply fan is running

Solve : Can Someone Walk Me Through This??

Answer»

I have 2 laptops, both Toshiba Satellites. Laptop #1 is my main computer. It contains all my data. It was given to me by a friend after he picked it up by the screen and mashed his thumb through the LCD. I removed the screen and hooked it up to an external LCD monitor. Laptop #1 is RUNNING Windows XP Home Edition.

Laptop # 2 is brand new and still in the box. It runs Vista. I don't want to go there, and plan to upgrade it to Windows 7 when it is released to the public.

I want to take the external monitor off Laptop # 1, and move it into my hotel lobby. That leaves me without a screen for laptop # 1.

I want to run laptop # 1 through Laptop # 2 so I can use laptop # 2 as an external monitor. Or in other words, possibly turn laptop # 1 into an external hard drive of laptop # 2.

I just went out and bought a 10 foot Cat5e Crossover network cable. (ethernet cable with 2 male ends).

Question #1--What do I do next?

Question # 2-- Which Wi-Fi card do I use to go online? Laptop #1 or Laptop # 2?

1. Share the Monitor. You must have a lot of "free" time... I'm not sure you can "share" the monitor on laptop 2 (use as external monitor for laptop 1).

2. Remote Desktop Connection. If you're willing to boot up laptop 2 into the Vista operating system, I assume it supports remote logon to laptop 1 using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection. If SUCCESSFUL, you would be operating within Windows XP on laptop 1, using keyboard, mouse, and monitor of laptop 2. Use "Help and Support" function available within your laptop operating systems for more information on this. Or research on internet.

3. Transfer Data to Laptop 2. While the "external" monitor is still available, boot up both laptop 1 and laptop 2 and transfer your "data" to laptop 2. You may do this either using "crossover" cable, USB thumb drives, CD/DVD burns, or direct cable connection (serial or parallel). Yes, I saw you don't want to use Vista.

4. External Hard Drive. PULL hard drive out of laptop 1 and place in an external hard drive enclosure which will interface to laptop 2 thru USB port. Or transfer all laptop 1 data to USB thumb drive or USB external drive. Then use laptop 2 with Vista to access the data. Yes, I saw you don't want to use Vista.

5. Swap Hard Drives. How closely related are the two Toshiba Satellite laptops. Are they the same model? If not the same model, do they use the same chipset and CPU. Windows XP is meant to be used on the same system it was installed on. However, if they're CLOSE, MAYBE you could replace the hard drive of laptop 2 with the one from laptop 1.

6. Can Someone Walk Me Through This? I'm not volunteering. You're the one with the free time. You could just pick up another external monitor for laptop 1.
