Solve : Cant Log In... HELP???

Answer»

I have a windows xp... and when I've turned it on it comes up with the log on screen, where u press ctrl, alt & del.... but when i press these keys nothing happens... this PC has all my work on it & i cant access it.... any ideas? In the log on screen, does Windows asking for your Username & Password or Windows asking you to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete ?A Window Asking Me To Press Ctrl Alt Del... But When I Press It, It Does Nothing, Ive CHECKED My Key Board Is All PLUGGED In Ect... Well, you could try "Last known good configuration" or "Safe Mode" from the Windows Advanced Options Menu.

Use the F8 function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options menu. Tap the F8 key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar DISPLAY).

When the Windows Advanced Options menu comes up, use the up/down ARROW keys to select "Last known good configuration".

If that doesn't GET you in, try "Safe Mode".
Just for the heck of it, try a different keyboard.

Solve : Help needed please. Laptop will not start?

Answer»

I have an HP laptop computer and its not working properly for me.

Its a dual boot between ubuntu and microsoft xp home edition and I have the same issue whenever I try to access ubuntu or microsoft.

This is what happens when I select Ubuntu..

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.

When I try to log into microsoft it just sits at the start-up screen
and then it WONT go anywhere.. I'm not sure whats wrong or what I should do to figure it out. I'm extremely novice when it comes to computers so please be patient : ) I'm also new to this forum so if any more information is needed I'd be more than happy to provide it. I appreciate the help

Melissa 1. HP laptop. What is the make and model number of the laptop?

2. Microsoft Operating System. What service pack level was your Windows XP Home Edition operating at, if known? For example, SP1, SP2, SP3?

3. Microsoft STARTUP Screen. And which screen is this? Is it sitting at the Windows user logon screen? If not, can you describe it with enough detail so we know which screen it is?

4. Dual Boot. Have you been using this dual boot successfully for awhile before the issue occurred?

5. Hardware/SOFTWARE Changes. Any hardware or software changes immediately preceding the "troubles". Have you disconnected and reconnected (reseated) any of the components recently; e.g the hard drive?1. HP Pavilion dv5000, I believe that is what your looking for.

2. I'm not entirely sure. It originally came with Windows XP Home Edition, but then a friend of mine suggested Ubuntu so he switched it to Ubuntu only. After a couple of months he changed it to the dual boot of Ubuntu and Windows.

3. I should say it is the screen right before you enter user name and password. Its the all BLACK screen with the windows logo and it says Microsoft Windows XP. It also has that "time bar" right below it.

4. The dual boot was fine. It wasn't without it's hiccups in the beginning, the very beginning, but once it started to work I didn't have any issues.

5. Prior to the "troubles" there were no hardware or software changes. I was not the last one to use the computer. A member of my family was and the next morning when I attempted to go on that's when I noticed there was a problem. I haven't disconnected or reconnected anything. I've been total that the fix would be a new hard drive, but I don't know for sure.

I do appreciate you taking the time to help. If there is anything else you need, please let me know. Thank youIt does seem to be a hardware issue. After some LIGHT googling it seems to be with your PCI Bridges, meaning the PCI slots where you would put your graphics card, sound card, etc. Im almost certain now that it is a hardware issue. Hope that helps!

Solve : Hard Disk Disappeared??

Answer»

My computer[running on Windows XP] cannot detect one of the secondary hard disks. It used to occur occassionally. Now it doesn't appear at all. My computer went through a Restore session half a month ago using Ghost. Can anyone please help?

Thank you.Go to Control Panel - ADMINISTRATIVE Tools - Computer MANAGEMENT - Disk Management. Does the drive SHOW there? If so, what is its STATUS and drive letter?no it does not show there
but all other hard disks and external hard disk show and they are in good conditionYou may want to go to the manufactures web site and download the disk tools. Run them against the drive to be sure its still good.

To me it sound like its a bad drive.

Boot into the BIOS and see if the drive appears there. If not, probably a bad drive.

Alan <>< do you have another computer AVAILABLE? If you do, I would try connecting hard drive in question to it and see if the second computer can access it.

Solve : What is the XP sort order??

Answer»

What is the XP sort order?
On the SUPPORT SITE it just talks about the numbers.

I want to know what is the default for names that do not have numbers.

In the ASCII chart the @ is low on the list and the ~ should be at the end of the list. But it is not so. This drives me crazy! It seems the XP will sort any symbol before any letter. Is there a chart that shows how they do this?sorting where? it's not the OS doing the sorting. It's either explorer or the command window, depending upon what you mean.i think geek-9pm thinks XP sorts the ascii tableI mean file names either on the DESKTOP, in a folder or in a the command line box when you do a DIR/ON
It is not just the simple ASCII order. Is there a table somewhere that will show me how Windows Explorer with sort all the letters and symbols that can be used in file names?
Thanks for any help you can give. This has been bothering me for years. I need to find the answer before I get much older. I can not sleep at night.you mean, the ANSI chart? or... hmmm actually, I think I read a blog post about just this, sort order, might be a bit technical but might also help you out, I'll see if I can find it...

some of these might help:

Why, When you sort by name, doesn't it actually sort by name?

String sorting is not done by ASCII CODE anymore.

Sort order for humans

Solve : Issues with Reformatting?

Answer»

OK, after my friend said it is easy to reformat my computer since I was having many issues with it, I decided to do it! Well, my PROBLEMS then started!

I have XP on my HP computer. I couldn't find my HP disk, so I used a Dell XP disk I had from my old Dell computer thinking it would be fine. After I did reformat the computer it worked, except I cannot hook up to the interent. The only option I have is dial-up, but I currently have Fios for my internet, so that does nothing for me!

On the device manager, I have question marks for my drivers. Luckily, I have my laptop to go on the internet.

What, if anything, can I do? Do I need to get a FRIENDS HP disk and reformat it again? Your help is truly appreciated!

Thanks!QUOTE from: pvmichaels on August 23, 2009, 12:57:15 PM

What, if anything, can I do? Do I need to get a friends HP disk and reformat it again? Your help is truly appreciated!

That may not be necessary, If the only problem that you are encountering is for the NIC then you got off really lucky.

I would just recommend downloading the correct NIC driver from HP and INSTALL that.

As a side note, I would also suggest phoning HP to get the correct disks in case you need them in the future. They usually send them out with a minor amount of fuss. It adds up to about 10 minutes on the phone.I would just recommend downloading the correct NIC driver from HP and install that.

Ok, I am guessing save it on a flash drive USING my laptop, and somehow install it on the other computer? How would I do this?

Once this is done, will I should be able to have internet?Did you get this issue resolved?

Something like a blue screen appearing with a warning message and then immediate reboot, or something like a message saying "bad boot file - system 32"...something like that? In that case you may have corrupted the system files for windows. You need to either repair the boot file, or install a fresh copy of OS.no blue screen...how do I ACCESS the boot file? and do what from there?

keep hitting control 8 while it's booting up and wait until it give you modes to boot up in try safe mode

Ummmmm....it's F8.The way I used to go around it, is to insert my Windows XP disk and run the setup programme from it. From there I entered the "repair mode". Go here for more information. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm.

Repair mode lets you enter the Command Prompt and you can use a specific list of commands that the repair mode allows you and add a new boot definition. Before doing that, whenever I got that bad boot message, the only way around it was to install a fresh windows copy but this way you can simply add a new boot file and bypass the problem. Have a look at the website to get more info.At what POINT does it reboot? When you TAP F8 and get to the alternative boot screen, try "disable restart on error"I don't have a start up disc or the windows xp cd because the computer was given to us....what would happen if I used the start up disc from a toally diffrent computer system?should dbe fine as long as you do not install from itQuote from: gatorsdogs on September 07, 2009, 11:55:40 AM

Solve : Internet Explorer shows white screen on start up.?

Answer»

Hi,

My home PC does this a lot. When opening up internet explorer (I have IE8, but IE7 did the same), An empty white IE window opens saying it's trying to connect. This could stay like it until I either END it or I log off. Sometimes I have to open a number of IE sessions before I get a useable one. Then the annoying thing is that if I end the duff session, all of my IE sessions including the working one dissapear.

I ALSO have FireFox, Opera, Google Chrome and Safari, none of which exhibit this problem.

Is it an IE SETTING that's CAUSING the issue, or something else?Like this one?

[attachment deleted by ADMIN]Yep!What is your home page in IE8? What are your home pages in other Web Browsers? Is your Internet Connection is good and stable?

Try delete first all the browsing history of your IE8, then close it, then open it again. See if it works.

Solve : Remote Desktop puzzle.?

Answer»

Hi,
As a major part of my job, I have to connect to user's PCs via remote desktop connection (RDC).

Most times when I do this, I get to see what the USERS are seeing and doing, and they get to see what I'm doing on their PC. However, occasionally, all I see is a windows logon screen. If I logon, the user cannot see what I'm doing and if they are logged on, I cannot see what they are doing.

My PC is running xp as are the user PC's.

Why is this and how can I get to interact with what the users are doing on their PCs all of the time?

THANKS.... This is feature of RDC. If you connect to remote computer, the user turns off automatically at logon screen. If you need to see what makes user without LOGOUT screen and have full access to the remote computer you must use third-party programs such as 'Remote Desktop' or DameWare UtilitiesQuote from: Baffled on September 07, 2009, 04:50:35 AM

Exactly what do you mean by "remote desktop connection"? Do you mean Remote Desktop, or Remote Assistance? I believe you would not have this problem if you use Remote Assistance.

Reference: How to use remote assistance in Windows XP We use Remote Desktop Connection here (i.e. the one in accessories folder) (we also use VNC but that doesn't ALWAYS work)

Solve : Spontaneous Reboot with a strange "click" sound?

Answer»

Hello there, I use a Core 2 QUAD processor with Windows XP as my operating system. Recently I have noticed a very STRANGE "click" sound that pops up every now and then. Since 2 days ago, the COMPUTER has started rebooting almost everytime whenever the "click" sound appears.

The click is characteristically loud enough to be heard in the next room, even with doors closed. I suspected it to be similar to the sound of pressing the "RESET" button, so I made an attempt to remove the connection of that powercord with the motherboard. So far two more CLICKS have appeared, but the computer hasn't restarted.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem? I have absolutely NO clue where does this strange click sound appear from. I checked on the temperature of my motherboard and CPU but nothing suspicious there. I have a feeling there's a hardware failure somewhere but can someone please guide me where and how to look for possible issues?maybe a key is GETTING stuck But the sound is almost like a "big capacitor discharging" !! This was why I was kind of worried if the problem is within the motherboard because there are so many electronic components there anyway. I would KEEP the powercord disconnected and see if the computer reboots again.DLoad and run the hard drive diagnostics from your HDD's manuf. site...FREE.
Follow the info on creating a bootable CD with it and boot to the CD.

I'm sorry, but you did What? There is that cord that runs from the reset button on the outside of the case to the motherboard. I removed its connection with the motherboard so that pressing the reset button wouldn't have an effect on restarting the computer.

However the problem is still there. I heard another click sound, and the computer restarted again. I am really confused now as to what the actual problem is. Did you read patio's reply?Yes I did. I downloaded the SeaTools just as Patio said and am now performing the tests given within the software although I have yet to read the user manual. I'd get back here as soon as I am done with the tests. Thanks for the advice everyone! so the result is(?)

Solve : size help ...?

Answer»

I am using a Dell laptop, Windows XP. My 3.5 year old was left unattended with the computer last night and when I WENT to use it later, everything was tiny...icons, fonts, internet pages, etc. How do I get them back to normal? I tried making fonts bigger and using control + together and that works when I'm on the net but nowhere else. I feel like I'm in mini land!!! Help!!Sounds like he or she somehow changed the resolution, though it's not that easy for a 3 year old to do. Anyway, just right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose Properties. Then go to the Settings Tab and pick a lower resolution.Tried that and it looks distorted if I move it in any way.I don't have a Dell laptop in front of me at the moment, but there should be a KEY with FN in blue letters (that's the function key). A number of other keys will also have blue secondary inscriptions on them. See if any look like they will increase / decrease screen or resolution size. If so, depress the FN key and simultaneously depress or tap the other key and see what effect it has on the screen.

I've got to take off for a while, but if that doesn't do it I'm not sure what else it might be (I'm assuming you've rebooted the SYSTEM before posting, yes?).Ok. I'll try that. And yes, I rebooted several times! ThanksThat didn't work either. If anyone has a dell laptop that might could help please respond! thanksI've got ONE of my Dell laptops in front of me now & still can't see what might have happened. Sorry.few things worth trying:

change the theme to a default:

Display Properties, Appearance tab. Try switching To Classic and back again (or XP style and back again).

Also check the Advanced Dialog (from the advanced button) and verify that "Icon size" is 32 or larger.

Another possibility is you have had "Use large icons" set in the "effects" dialog.

Although as ADG said these settings aren't really the type of thing a 3-year old can change, but, it happens. try holding down FN and pressing F7
sometimes it could make it slightly larger or smallerSystem Restore?
Same in Safe Mode?

Solve : removing folder password protection without password?

Answer»

The local senior center recently dismissed an employee who had password protected a folder on the senior center's PC. The new person needs files in that folder, but the former employee is disgruntled and won't give the password.

My question: Is there a way to remove password protection from the folder without having the password? I am trying to help them.

The person originally used the Windows XP password protection capability to password protect the folder.

Thanks for any help,

MikeQuote

Windows XP password protection capability to password protect the folder.

Windows XP doesn't have built in ability to password protect a folder- the closest thing would be USING Encryption, in which case the files are unreadable without the proper user credentials (which would require the user password).First of all, what proof do you have guys, the story is real?hey, don't look at me! I'm not the one who posted the link! Harry's busted Ok FOLKS. I'm a real person, this is a real problem and a real request.

I expect that I'll wind up telling the person in charge of the whole problem that there's nothing that can be done without the password.

That disgruntled former employee has surely done a job on these folks who don't deserve it. How small minded a thing to do, too.

Harry's busted

removed my post you have to trust PEOPLE wether the OP can be "trusted" or not is redundant- this is a public forum and posting links to "password recovery", or whatever it was - programs is akin to posting password cracking program links.

In any case, what I was trying to make clear to the Original Poster was that a Folder cannot be password protected via the built-in functionality of Windows XP; therefore I was hoping perhaps for some clarification as to how this was done. (A third party program, perhaps?). It could ALSO be using Encryption Using the "disgruntled" USERS account, which means only their account or a designated recovery agent can recover the files.

However I would expect in that case that the query would have been regarding the user account password... thus my curiousity re: third party programs.as the song said , " i understand " , thats why my post was removedQuote from: mikehi on September 07, 2009, 11:29:21 AM

Solve : Converting to .PDF files?

Answer»

I am creating a newsletter for my organization with lots of photos, text boxes, links, etc., which make it HUGE. (~70MB) We intend to email to our members but this is obviously not practical. Will converting this newsletter to .PDF make it small enough to email widely?Quote

which make it HUGE. (~70MB)
What format do you USE? Word file (.doc or .docx)?http://www.dopdf.com/download.phpI am using .doc format and including many inserts - primarily jpeg.I don't think going to pdf files will help you much.
You could optimise the pics to cut down the SIZE.
http://www.webresizer.com/resizer/

Another option would be to upload the complete newsletter to the internet then just email the link to your members.yeah, make your own webpage and just have people visit it to get all the information Thanks to everyone who responded! I've discussed the internet upload idea with our Board and they liked it. So that's what we are going to do. Appreciate your help.Word doesn't optimize the size of the photos you put in your word document. Converting to PDF never down-sizes the ACTUAL file size. The only way around, if you still want to email it primarily, is to resize the images and reduce their QUALITY. You can use any software for that purpose; CorelPaint is a REALLY good one. However you can also use free softwares like Irfanview. If after resizing you put in the images, you'd then dramatically reduce the size of your newsletter.

Alternatively, you already have the other option of putting it on a website. You certainly can have an official website for your organization where the news is on the mainpage. And the news stuff would effectively be your newsletter Quote from: Domenech on September 07, 2009, 10:40:40 AM
If after resizing you put in the images, you'd then dramatically reduce the size of your newsletter.
You're assuming he has many images in his newsletter that can be substantially downsized in file size. He hasn't responded to that point or stated much detail about the number of photos or the size of the image files. You're quite likely right but we don't know for sure without more details from the OP.

If that newsletter is going to be a recurring publication, a thorough discussion of optimizing images for the web would, indeed, be worthwhile. 70MB is large even for a single PDF document on the web.

HelpDon't know what you're trying to SAY. Install the drivers directly, not VIA device manager.I installed the drivers directly. The computer will say 'found new hardware.' But, the drivers won't update. Automatically or manually. Why don't you please start at the beginning and explain everything.wiped the computer.
INstalled XP Pro sp2
Went to the Lenovo website to download the drivers for this particular model.
Installed the chipset first. Then all other drivers.
The ethernet works.
No wireless.
No sound through the lap speakers.
No bluetooth.
Went to device manager to update drivers that had an EXCLAMATION by them.
Went the the designated folders where the
drivers reside.
The computer still does not recognize them.

P.S. would the fact that the model was maufactured overseas matter?
As a rule, drivers should be installed by double-clicking on the setup.exe file. The audio driver should have a setup.exe, DITTO the video driver, etc. You should not be in device manager. And no, doesn't matter where the computer was made. Thanks so much for putting it poliltey how my simple behind forgot the easiest step (download & install) Of course...it worked. Thanks again. I smacked myself in the back of the head for us both!No problem. Thanks for posting back and GLAD you're all set now.

Solve : Disaster- should have left well alone?

Answer»

My Samsung NC10 Netbook had been working OK since I bought it in Jan 09 but I hadn't used it much. Today I thought I had better use the Samsung recovery program that backs up the C drive onto D which was set up on the default 50/50 partition from new.

The program did a full back up of the 17GB C drive and then re booted. I noticed that it was running very slow and also that the D partition was empty and a widow came up asking me if I wanted to format it. I shut it down in the normal way and started it again and now it wont boot up.
I just get the black boot up options screen with a horizontal segment progress bar at the bottom which gradually moves across and then some text flashes on the screen and then goes back to the boot options screen. Sometimes I get the windows logo with the blue progress bar but after a few minutes it goes back to the boot options. I have tried booting in normal, last good config and safe mode. Once I got a screen saying auto check prog not found then crashed back again. I have the XP disc that came with it but of COURSE there is no CD Drive. Can anybody help please Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Disable the automatic restart on system failure so system will STOP at BSOD. Post back with the "exact" error message text/numbers and any module name it fingers as probable culprit.

Use the F8 function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options menu. Tap the F8 key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar display).

When the Windows Advanced Options menu comes up, select "Disable automatic restart on system failure".
Thanks for your reply. I disabled the auto restart on systems failure and on the blue screen it says that a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Then it goes on to check for viruses, REMOVE any hard drives, check hard drives to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Its NP-NC10KA03UK How do I get out of this blue screen ? Got to go out now will check back this evening in about 6 hours. Many thanks Do you think I should try F4 Samsung recovery SOLUTION In the book it says, "There is a quick restore mode and then basic restore which it says restores the major windows files only while maintaining the user config and data on the C drive." Then if that doesn't work it says run complete restore which deletes the entire C drive and restores the content of the C drive. Using the Restore option will wipe out all your data and Programs and basically take the machine back to Day One status...
You decide.Doesn't the "basic restore" return it to a point where I tried to make the back upI've never used the Samsung utility so i can't say what exactly it does...i'd back up all my important data just in CASE.I ended up after talking to Samsung using the Recovery Solution III. I tried doing a basic restore which didn't work and then doing a complete restore which took me back to day one but after the HDD had been partitioned 50/50. I am now installing the programs I want to bring it back to where it crashed and then I intend to make a compete backup onto an external HDD. My question is on my D partition there are recovery solution files totaling 14.3 GB User1.w01,w02,w03,wcI,woo. Can you tell me what these are and can I safely delete them bearing in mind the above. Those are the Recovery files that you just used to rescue the netbook...
Check the Owners Manual on how to back these up to a DVD so you have them...

Actually they are better left there since you do not have a CD drive in that machine...
Even using an external it would have to be ABLE to boot to the external for you to do a Restore anytime down the road. This is at best difficult but not impossible.

At any rate check with Samsung before getting rid of them...OK, many thank for everyones help on this.Welcome Aboard !I have Acronis True Image v 11 and a external HDD. I want to make a full back up of my C drive onto the external HDD. Not having a CD drive, do you know if I will be able to boot up my NC10 Samsung netbook with a USB flash drive bootable rescue to use Acronis in case either XP wont boot up or my internal HDD packs in. Check your Manual to see if the MBoard supports booting to an external USB device...not all of them do...

Defrag is not supported in Recovery Console and it's not good practice to try to defrag a corrupt partition.

It is POSSIBLE your hdd is infected, the symptoms you describe sure do point to that.

You can try going to this site and download the 4th boot cd iso file which is headed "Boot CD - Windows XP Emergency Boot CD (XP sp2 Pro & XP sp2 Home) 158k 11-Mar-2007" and burn it to a cd then boot from it. It contains a copy of files required to boot the Windows OS which is installed at C:\Windows.

unfortunately still not getting anywhere. I made a bootable Cd of the file suggested and booted from that. The following came up on the screen

1. FD 2.88MB SYSTEM Type-(00)

NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart

Anyone got any IDEAS ?
ThanksAt this point you might be better off formatting your hard drive and doing a clean install of windows.

You can SAVE your data by slaving that drive in another working computer.
http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/thanks for that, I think that is my best option. I know of quite a few errors with that computer and formatting hard drive and clean install of windows should GIVE me a stable system again.
i did back up last month so the data should be retriveable from my external Hard drive?
Be sure to check your backup is actually on your your external hard drive before you start the reformat.......so many people backup their importantant data and assume it has been backed up when it hasn't.......just a heads up......Yeah, I've got there. Windows is back up and running
Thank you to everyone on this forum for their help.
Turns out I still wasn't getting the right drive letter, ussd the map command and all is now OK, but I think I have some cleaning up to doCongrats Sally, thanks for coming back to report your success..

Besides iTunes...
Rhapsody (USA only), a product of Realnetworks

Solve : Mic not working in Windows xp sp3?

Answer»

Hi to all, I recently update my windows xp sp2 to sp3 but it has a problem my MIC doesn't work in sp3, I tried to use the mic to my friends computer who's using Sp2 and the mic is working fine, I also check the mic volume & if it is mute but it seems that all the settings are correct. Im just wondering why my mic won't work in sp 3.

Any help is highly appreciated thanks in advance....What's it look like in Device MANAGER?

click START, right-click "my computer", click "properties", hardware tab, device manager

Do you see any errors anywhere? yellow exclamation marks, red X's ?

Hi, thanks for your reply. There is no error in the device manager no special symbols like the x nor ! mark.Go back into Device Manager, find your mic, right click on it, click "properties", click on the "driver" tab and click on "roll back driver".... Perhaps a new driver was installed with the installation of service pack 3..

The "roll back driver" button will force Windows to use your old driver..Even better, reinstall your sound driver.Quote from: ADG on September 06, 2009, 04:09:08 PM

Even better, reinstall your sound driver.

I've never used a mic so I assumed there would be a "mic" listing in device manager, but since the sound driver (Realtek AC97) driver controls audio output and input, your SUGGESTION is probably more accurate..

At any rate, if reinstalling it doesn't work, try rolling back..

Guys I didn't see the mic in the device manager, I also tried to reinstall the sound driver but STILL no success, my mic is not working with windows xp sp3, It's working fine in my friends computer using win xp sp2....

Does any one here knows how to solve the mic issue in windows xp sp3 ?
maybe there is a step here that you haven't tried yet..

Hi guys, got it working again. I copied ntldr, ntdetect, and boot.ini from an XP installation on my laptop to a floppy and put it into desktop pc and it kind of sorted itself out. I have always had trouble booting the desktop PC in that on first boot it comes up with" autodetecting primary master- Press f4 to abort" and will go no further until I do a REBOOT after which it is perfect, been trying to sort this for ages with no luck though it has always worked like this till recently. I am booting from a 400 GB primary with jumpers set correctly as master and cable is correctly configured, I also have a 120 slave drive hard disc USED only for storing files. Thanks , JimOn most recent PC's there are 2 IDE channels ...
Refer to your MBoard specs to see which is which.
HDD's should be ideally on IDE0 with optical drives on IDE1....
Or Hdd's on IDE1 and optical on IDE2...different manuf. label them differently.

With them jumpered accordingly here is the correct cable layout:

MB===========================Slave======Master.Hi Patio, thanks for replying, that is how MINE is, HDD is IDE 0 and cable fitted as your diagram, just opened this afternoon to triple check it, Jim.I've seen this before and also put up with it as you are doing ...could never find what bugger in the BIOS was causing it...but you may WANT to put a new CMOS battery in there and see...Part# CR2032 available anywhere.
Remove all power when replacing it. Hi Patio, funnily enough I had wondered about that. When I got desktop PC to work again today after about a 10 days and it has been plugged into mains all this time, when I went into the BIOS it had lost about 2 hours from the correct time, cheers , Jim.Best of Luck...again you're on the right TRACK !

Right click on the icon that launches Office XP, click "properties", click on the "compatibility" tab, check the box under "compatibility", click on the arrow and select either Windows 2000 or Windows 98, click "apply" click "ok", then launch Office XP...

Try both Windows 2000 and Win98 compatibility and see if it corrects "lines" on your documents..

Solve : system recovery problems?

So My computer became infected so much, that while running avast antivirus, I deleted some programs and files, I don't know which ones where they were. Anyway the computer became so infected that did what normally do.I ran a destructive system recovery, but I kept getting a blue screen,I don't remember what it said. So I used my windows recovery cds,I follow the instructions, but when it's at the recovery percent screen, it said "i386/system32/restore.exe not found"and gave the options abort or retry, well retry didn't work, so i put abort. it then ask are you sure, i put no, and then it asked for the next cd and it followed the same procedure until it got to 80%, it started to say that some applications and program(they come with system, like windows media player, movie maker, etc.)couldnt be recovered, all you could do is press ok, and then another one pops up saying another application couldnt be recovered. it did like 30 times, than finally stops at 90%and continues normally and restarts. But now the maindesktop wont APPEAR and the computer keeps booting up and it flashes a blue screen very fast. i tried system recovery again but same problem. my system is a windows xp home edition and same thing with the recovery cds their home editions. any help is much appreciated! BTW i cant access that computer, it wont let me. the computer i'm using to post this is different. Sounds like the CD is dirty or scratched. Try polishing it. i tried cleaning it, but it still wouldn't work
I think the cd is the problem, since it is pretty scratched.
anyone know where I can get a new one? I just need one cd, the others work. I don't mind downloading the cd.
the cd is an hp pavillion home pc, system recovery windows xp home edition disc 1 it was released 2001.
thanks 1. See if HP will send you one for a "nominal" fee. Not sure how far back they'll go to support their computers. I've seen links on their web site where you can order the CDs. Start at http://www.hp.com and drill down through support links until you find something like Looking for Recovery Discs?

A word to the wise... You're going to have to do better than "It's an HP Pavilion..." A complete MODEL number requires more information, e.g "Pavilion 6736 kr".

2. Option 2 is to use a "retail" Windows XP Installation CD and worry about picking up the correct DRIVERS for your motherboard and peripherals. If you buy a "legitimate" CD, it should come with valid product key. If you borrow one, you'll have to call Microsoft, convince them you have a valid OEM license (CERTIFICATE of Authentication and Product Key), and ask for a new product key that will pass activation.

Did a little researching and whatever key i press, as long as I press enoguh keys, the computer will startup. Ex. tap all the directional keys enough(around 5 secs) and it'll finish that screen and move on. So, what's wrong?bad keyboardthe keyboard seems to work fine though. Is there anything I can do to fix it? btw it's a wireless keyboard, if that matters?Take out what ever key is sticking and put it back in if you don't know which one is sticking take out all the keys and put them back in
go to work pad type the alphibet and all the numbers and see if a letter is stuck if not that take out all the keys that are not in the alphibet or numbers and put them back incan you barrow a wired keyboard and try that
@876543219
*censored* -- thats terriable adviceI might do the take out all the keys ADVICE, if it works(will it work?). I'll try unplugging the wireless reciever and see what happens. hope this isn't spam (posting twice in a row), but its the keyboard . I tried a couple things in relation to it, but it's the keyobard. Is there anyway to fix it?well if it didn't beep when you STARTED without the keyboard one of the keyboard keys are stuck if you took um all out and put them back in there's not much you can do did you check the keyboard were you plug it into the computer maybe a wire got bent then straghting it out

if you find the key that's stuck and you keep putting back in and it's countinues to get stuck i'm not sure there's much else you can do besides take out the key Found the key, thanks everyone, would have never guessed keyboard what key was it?

Solve : Mass media storage devices not read?

Hello everyone!

I was looking through the previous questions and found several that are SIMILAR to mine but not exact.

I have an HP Pavilion notebook computer running Windows XP. Recently I had to have the USB ports REPLACED and EVERYTHING was running fine. Then out of nowhere my mass media storage devices stopped working through them. I have tried plugging in my EXTERNAL floppy and a memory stick. Both devices work on my tower so I know they are not the problem. The weird thing is it's only the storage devices that don't work. Anything else I plug in there (mouse, etc) works fine.

I hope someone can give me some direction!

Thanks! How are they reported in Disk Management in the tower ? ?
To get there right click My Computer and select manage then disk management...again right click each device and select Properties...
Report back with what it says.

Who did the repairs ? ?

I don't believe you can. I suggest you put the hard drive back in it's home computer and start a forum topic on the problems you're having with it.Why not just RETURN the drive to it's machine and DLoad and run ERUNT and save the backup as a text file...you can then read to your heart's content.

Editing the registry can render a machine un-bootable so be careful.Patio,

You have the problem. The drive makes the machine un-bootable. I'm trying to get it back in some shape using the second computer to try to figure out what is wrong. Try grouping similar programs together - i.e. all video related, or all media related - just change the name of one folder and then drag all the other related ones into that. I can't stand a sprawling start menu, plus it takes longer to load - mine has MAYBE 8 items (FOLDERS) on it - with each one branching out quite a bit... What matters here is whether or not your motherboard supports SATA II. If not you will not get the full performance the drive offers but it should still work.Quote from: Deerpark on March 19, 2008, 07:15:49 PM

By "SATA II" I assume you mean SATA 3.0 Gbit/s (versus SATA 1.5 Gbit/s)...? My computer is over 4 years OLD, so I don't know which my motherboard supports. Are the connectors the same? Will there be any issues using a newer hard drive on an old motherboard?

Wiki reports: "SATA is designed to be backward and forward compatible with future REVISIONS of the SATA standard. According to the hard drive manufacturer Maxtor, motherboard host controllers using the VIA and SIS chipsets VT8237, VT8237R, VT6420, VT6421L, SIS760, SIS964 FOUND on the ECS 755-A2 which was manufactured in 2003, do not support SATA 3Gb/s drives. To address interoperability problems, the largest hard drive manufacturer Seagate/Maxtor have added a user-accessible jumper-switch known as the Force 150, to switch between 150 MB/s and 300 MB/s operation. Users with a SATA 1.5Gb/s motherboard with one of the listed chipsets should either buy an ordinary SATA 1.5Gb/s hard disk, buy a SATA 3Gb/s hard disk with the user-accessible jumper, or buy a PCI or PCI-E card to add full SATA 3Gb/s capability and COMPATIBILITY. Western Digital uses jumper setting called "OPT1 Enabled" to force 150 MB/s data transfer speed."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATAThe connections are the same...the drive will operate at whatever the MBoard supports. A SATA 2 or 3 HDD will operate at SATA1 speed if that's how the MBoard was designed.Quote from: patio on March 19, 2008, 10:26:24 PM

Cool, thanks so much! What year were "SATA II" (SATA 3.0 Gbits/SATA 300) motherboards/HDDs largely implemented into the mass market of home desktop computers?

Deerpark stated the buffer size increase (16MB ---> 32MB) shouldn't matter. Will I notice a difference in operation? The buffer is used to store and rapidly retrieve frequently accessed data, so with a larger buffer more data can be stored.
Whether or not you'll notice a difference between a 16 and 32 MB buffer is hard to say.
It should lead to increased performance in certain SITUATIONS.

Solve : configuring a proxy threw java console?

Answer»

hello , i was RECENTLY made aware that even with a proxy server my i.p could stil LBE discovered in java based applications , ive used java.exe itself to configure a proxy but it still shows the information , i was reading and .. apparently i need to "keep the browser from accessing the network and allow only my i.p threw the firewall" how would i go about doing this? also if i were to use socks instead of http would this solve my problem?

thanksCan't really help you because this doesn't make any sense to me.

"keep the browser from accessing the network and allow only my i.p threw the firewall"
For the outbound traffic you will at the very least need to allow the IP address of the proxy you're using. But generally you would configure the firewall to allow all outbound traffic to the ports associated with HTTP traffic. (80, 443, ETC).
Inbound you could restrict the firewall to only allow traffic addressed to your IP. But this is KINDA pointless since you shouldn't be receiving traffic for other IPs than your own.
But none of this should really have much influence on your net anonymity which is why I started out by saying this doesn't make sense to me.
(I'm not even going to take a guess at the logic behind "keep the browser from accessing the network".)

But what is with the discovery paranoia anyway? Are you doing something you shouldn't be doing or are you just wearing a hat made of tinfoil?
Even with a proxy your IP might still being "discovered".
If you're using open proxies you have no idea who is running them and what they might be logging.

Solve : Syntax to edit right click menu?

Answer»

does anybody know the syntax required to customize the right CLICK menu?I use Context Menu Editor...careful it can be dangerous.
Backup the registry first. If you're comfortable editing the registry, here's a guide on how to do that: Hacking Windows XP: Hacking Windows Explorerif i had a program called analysis.exe that required an inputfile (problem.inp) that CREATES an output file (problem.out)

what would i type in the box to do that?

where i COULD normally, in dos, navigate to the folder where input file is, and type

>C:\[path]\analysis.exe problem.out

I am trying to make it easy for a non-DOS user to run this file.

Solve : default email program?

Answer»

my DEFAULT EMAIL, from my XP start button is OUTLOOK express. it can only be CHANGED to windows live mail. is there a way to change that to my aol mail?

Thanks for any help Is AOL mail entirely web-based? In other words, you do not download it to your computer, you view it via your web browser?

Open Control Panel, Internet Options, SELECT the Programs tab, and see what options you have there. If AOL Mail is not listed there, that's a clear indication AOL Mail is web-based. If so, you won't be able to set it as a default Email program.thanks

Solve : Is it possible? Tricky problem needs expert to resolve!?

Answer»

I have a DUAL boot system running XP Pro and XP Home EDITION.
I want to remove the XP Pro operating system because it is CAUSING games to freeze and things generally seem slower.
IS IT POSSIBLE and if so, HOW?
The XP Home Edition resides in C:\WINDOWS.
The XP Pro resides in C:\WINDOWS.0.
When I boot up in Safe Mode and select XP Home Edition as the operating system I still can't delete the directory C:\WINDOWS.0 because, it says, file such and such is in use. Is there any way around it so than I can get rid of XP Pro.Dual boot configurations should have separate partitions or separate hard drives for the individual OS. You've got a messed up installation there, with both OS somehow installed on C, i.e. on the same partition. If you had a proper dual-boot configuration, I think you WOULD find Win XP Pro is not noticeably slower than Win XP Home.

Honestly, the best thing to do in this case would be to format your hard drive and do a fresh installation of Windows (whichever version you prefer), and maybe setup a proper dual-boot configuration. But, if it were me, I'd just install Win XP Pro. Why have a dual-boot configuration with the two versions of Win XP?Thanks Soybean. It was done by mistake. I agree with your CONCLUSIONS now although I had hoped there would be some way of making the later installation, XP Pro, disappear. The only difference from my point of view was that the HE was legal but I no longer have the disks, the Pro isn't legal but it's better and I have the disk.your better off seeing if you can find a ISO copy online and then using the legal cd key IMO

Solve : Error detected when formatting primary hard disk partition?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 2100 Desktop...Pentium III processor...256-KB. I've had this PC for a number of years. Lately I have found it necessary to delete and reformat the hard drive due to loades of unecessary files and stuff over the years. I have done this twice with no problems....however on the last time I had to do this I received an error message when formatting the primary hard drive.
The error says, "SETUP CANNOT INSTALL WINDOWS ME ON YOUR COMPUTER. AN ERROR WAS DETECTED WHEN FORMATTING YOUR PRIMARY HARD DISK PARTITION.
My question is...do I need to purchase a new hard drive for the pc or is there something I am doing wrong?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank You in advance!
KimPossibly a non-recoverable hard drive error but you should run the hdd DIAGNOSTICS program available on the hdd manufacturer's site.

Good luck

This may be the LINK you need:
Dell Dimension 2100 Support
It looks like you could have EITHER an IBM or quantum hard drive.
If you click on "Add or Edit Service Tag"(on that web site) and enter the service tag information, it may be able to identify which drive you have.

Otherwise crack the case and LOOK for the hard drive brand/model to know which software to download.Thank you for the info. I have gone to Dell Support and downloaded the hdd. However since my desktop does not have the Windows Me loaded....I used my laptop to burn it to a disk....to use on the desktop. You will have to excuse me because I know little about how to do this. Now that I have the disk...I CHANGED my system to boot to cd rom first. However, when I restart the system with the disk...it says the diagnostics were loaded successfully but I have no idea how to access it.
Also....one more question....when creating a new partition it asks for volume....I have no idea what I should put here.
Thank you so much for all your info.
Kim

Solve : I can't upload any files?

Answer»

I am running windows 2000. I do not have the cd. It is a generic dell that i have had for several years. I am running zone alarm and avast anti virus on it. Up until last weekend I had no problems. Now I can not upload any files, no matter what the type or size.Turn off Zone Alarm and try...Okay I tried it and it didn't work. What browser ?
What are you uploading?
And where ?

You haven't provided much info here......and where are you uploading to? Or maybe, you're talking about downloading?I don't THINK he's been to DEFCON... Browser: Mozilla Firefox version 2.0.0.13 (exstentions noscript, adblock, FORECAST fox)
File Types: Any files. Word Documents, mp3s, avi, jpeg, bmps. Any and all files I try to upload.
Where: Gmail, Deviant Art, a server run by a friend, three different forums. And anywhere else I try.

I have tried disabling all the extensions I have for Firefox but that didn't work either. I have ALSO tried using the latest version of IE but I still couldn't upload any files.
I can download files no problem.
It's more clear now.
When you're trying to upload, what happens? Any error messages?
Do you use router?
What firewall do you use? Did you try to disable it momentarily?
Can you upload in Safe Mode with Networking?I only get an error message when I try to attach a file with gmail. It says there has been an error with the server and the email cannot be sent at this time. Anywhere else after I try to upload it simply stops. The computer isn't FROZEN but it will not finish the upload.
I do not use a router and my firewall is Zonealarm. I have tried disabling it but even with it turned off I can't upload. I tried it in safe mode after I read your suggestion and it still wouldn't let me upload.Hmmm...pretty puzzling...
Try to create new profile. Are you aware gmail will block certain extensions for uploads ? ?
