Solve : Not having to manually copy the contents of the System Configuration Utility?

Answer»

The Start tab in System Configuration Utility of my Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 has 26 lines and 3 columns.
The Service tab in System Configuration Utility of my Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 has 100 lines and 4 columns.
Can you please TELL me if there's any way of entering the contents of these 126 lines to a IRC or IM chat without having to manually copy each one of them.?I have to ask....why do you want to do this?

Apparently because he or she prefers to get help from chat rather than the forum. As you know, the help there is far superior to what we have to offer That's a good question. I'll try to help if someone here can tell me where the file versions (.txt, .log, .reg, .whatever) of these tabs are. =P
Then it would be easier to copy. =)There are plenty of utilities that will display what you want and allow you to create text files (System Information for Windows is one that comes to mind immediately).Alrighty. So here's the solution for Spoiler:

start -> run -> msconfig -> tools tab -> System Information -> click 'launch' (on the bottom)

MsInfo32 GUI now launches. Go to 'Software Environment' -> 'Startup Programs'. Click there.
Wait for about 2-3 minutes (that's how long my laptop took to load the list!! That was long!), just wait, it will appear, no it won't crash, it's just loading the contents.

After seeing the contents on the right, click File -> Export and then export to where you want.
Do the same for 'Services'. Done!

p.s.: LOL @ Allan (thanked 404)Quote from: Treval on March 29, 2010, 10:26:06 AM

Alrighty. So here's the solution for Spoiler:

Pretty sure spioler asked the why, not the how. It will help the original poster to copy it though.

of course if they try to paste 126 lines to IRC they will certainly get kicked for flooding, depending on the server.Whoops. I've mistaken the OP. Then again BC, I don't read things as detailed as you. =P
I'm a skip-reader, yo.

Quote
of course if they try to paste 126 lines to IRC they will certainly get kicked for flooding, depending on the server.
Of course he would first paste them into pastebin for a month or SOMETHING and provide a link to it, no? =PSpoiler, Allan, Treval, BC_Programmer:

THANKS to you all!!

Spoiler wanted to know why I would want to do this. The answer is I was asked to do that by the employee that's in charge of an anti-malware centre.

It's not a matter of whose help is superior as Allan thinks. It's a matter of assessing the behaviour and responses of that anti-malware centre.

I tried the solution Treval gave Spoiler and in some way (only in some way) it worked.
I had thought that in order to avoid being kicked for flooding (as said by BC_Programmer) I would try dosing the shipments, sending not more than 10 lines at a time.
That would make 13 shipments.

But I've received a surprise.
With Treval's method the contents of the Service tab increase from 100 lines and 4 columns to 109 and 10
But the contents of the Start tab increase from 26 lines and 3 columns to 4519 and 4
That would make 463 shipments and that would surely flood!
Do you know why 26 lines have increased to 4519 and what must I do if I want to EASILY copy only the 26 lines I need to send them over the IRC or IM system? HTTP://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.htmlThank you!
I'll try that. You're welcome. Let us know how it works out for you.Hi Allan!!

I was reading back my posts and discovered the request you made on your last post on this thread.

The answer to it is the following:

I went to http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html but never used it because I was paying the anti-malware centre for its services and I didn't want to add another payment to that.

I solved my problem by cancelling my contract with the paid anti-malware centre and switching to another anti-malware service which has no fees and is working quite satisfactorily.

Sorry for the delay.

Vigaenson.

Solve : Slow computer; I set up for my granddaughter.?

Answer»

Hello

I have an
Intel Celeron 902MHZ with Windows XP Vers. 2002 Service Pack 2 and 304 MB Ram
Anti-Virus ESET NOD 32

I had an older computer that I had updated a year and a half ago. The computer worked fine after it came back from the tech. I only used it for Internet purposes. I later disconnected the computer and it sat packed up for a year.

My grandaughter needed a computer for schoolwork and browsing, facebook etc., so I set it up and connected the internet.

The problem is the computer seems to be running to many processes. I checked under task manager and found , when idle it shows anywhere from 17% to 29% usage. If I move the mouse it jumps from 35% yo 100%. I'm assuming this is why the internet pages are slow to load.

I've checked the internet connection, speed and made sure no files were hanging around. I have run a defrag and done a checkdisk.

It loads programs quickly and seems to handle most functions efficiently, however I don't know how to get rid of this usage issue. Nothing was added as it sat for a year. I know it should have more RAM but it ran a year ago without problems and I thought it would be sufficient for her to use as a first computer.

Can anybody help?

1) I suggest you scan the system with both your anti virus app AND with MalwareBytes
2) Which specific process is spiking?Quote

Intel Celeron 902MHZ with Windows XP Vers. 2002 Service Pack 2 and 304 MB Ram

Have you considered adding more RAM ? ?You definitely need to add more RAM. I think from the age of the system, the max is probably 512MB, but you should add at least that much. Firefox uses about three hundred MB just to browse the NET and so it is probably consuming all the RAM and lagging because of the pagefile.Thank you for your interest, all.

Allan;
I ran both system checks you requested and they came up clean. The processes that are spiking, are as follows.
egui.exe
explorer.exe
taskmgr.exe
ekrn.exe
RTWlan.exe
SYSTEM
Services.exe

Patio;
I agree, I should. Why would it have changed over one year? As I said the computer wasn't a rocket bu for internet navigation it was fine.

Linux711;
Same thing. I agree, but as I asked Patio, why would it not work as before? Being it was only a year ago. I know because I'm looking at the receipt from the tech. Strange.Could you be more specific as to where or what tasks is slow or slowing down your PC aside from the processes? While adding memory would help out your system, have you tried shifting to another free protection/antivirus software also?Do you have the latest version of ESET installed? If not, I'd start by upgrading it since two or the process that are spiking belong to Eset. Also, check to see if Eset is set to run full scans in the background on a regular basis. If it is, you can disable that and have it scan only on demand.Hello

Jason2074;
I haven't tried a different anti- virus. Can you recommend one? The only real slow down I see is in internet explorer. As far as running NORMAL software, I am able to open multible programs including Microsoft Office, and their is no lag.

Allan;
I thought I had the latest version, but I am going to check that now. I will go ahead and turn off the auto background scan. Let y6ou know soon.

Thanks everybody.IE slowdown may be the connection...run SpeedTest...I would side with Allen and say turn auto scan off if it's on. I know that on this old piece (933MHz CPU with 388-ish RAM) leaving avast on all the time SLOWS things a LOT (although avast tends to be a bit of a RAM hog). I also find IE to be pretty slow personally, I'm not sure why, but it's always slower for me... Generally I stick to Firefox and it works well for me.

So I'd definitely figure out slimming down your anti-virus software and getting more RAM for sure. I'm sure the RAM's super cheap probably. Beyond that... idk, get a new machine. Quote
The only real slow down I see is in internet explorer.

How slow? Opening and LOADING pages and other websites being accessed? You could start by clearing first your cache or temp files.
Download Ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
Install then run the program. If you wanna keep previously or frequent sites on browsers, uncheck History. Click Analyze and Run Cleaner.
Another way also is to run IE without addons here -> Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode
Reset Internet Explorer is option to take when your having a slow browsing experience. While on IE, click on Tools, Internet options,
Advanced tab and click Reset... hit Apply. You could also use another browser like Google Chrome http://www.google.com/chrome?hl=en

Solve : FROM WINDOWS 95-XP SP1?

How to Prepare to Upgrade WINDOWS 95 or Windows 98 to Windows 2000

There is an upgrade provision in Windows 2000. As I recall, this feature nwas not in Windows XP. Windows 2000 will try to load the old programs.

My recomendation is to upgrade to Windows 2000, based on the hardware you are using. Windows 2000 has many of the features found in Windows XP. Specifically, the NTFS files system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_2000

If you decide to install Windows XP sp1, you should consider installing it to another partition and have a dual-boot system. But your disk space is RATHER small for this. Windows XP on the same partition will nnot load the old programs, so you have to keep Windows 95.

A legal original CD of Windows 2000 sells for less taht $20 by resellers.Quote from: Ademil4vic on September 10, 2011, 05:06:49 AM

That computer will run XP I think, but it won't be that nice. That processor should be sufficient.

A complete install of Windows XP takes about 3-3.5GB hard drive space. However, when the installation is complete and Windows is running, there are a NUMBER of unnecessary things you can remove and get it down to about 1.5-2GB. To be honest though, I'd upgrade the hard drive if you have the money. I haven't seen a 10GB drive in years, so I expect that one is quite aged. If you don't want to get a new drive, at the very least start keeping regular backups of anything IMPORTANT (documents, photos, etc.).

ALSO keep in mind the amount of space Windows XP updates are going to take.

I'd suggest putting in a bit more RAM (I'd recommend 512MB, but 256MB will suffice).Quote from: Ademil4vic on September 10, 2011, 05:06:49 AM

Yep, that will run XP just fine.

I'd recommend getting SP3, though.SP3 is available as a free Windows Update.
10GB is rather little for additional programs, though-the windows install already uses about 1.2 GB.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2113752
Apparently someone has used Partition Wizard to change the cluster size without deleting data.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/140365I thought the idea was to use smaller cluster sizes to prevent slack space.

I honestly cannot think of a single reason why somebody would want to change the cluster size to 32K. Or why they would want to change it from the default at all.

Solve : Setting up a new hard-drive with old XP--hints please?

Answer»

Greetings All!

I'm NORMALLY not brief; however, I'll try.

To net it out:

  • I have a new hard-drive for 5-year-old Toshiba A65 after a hard-drive crash.
  • The new drive has a corrupted clone of my old drive on it.
  • I have the Toshiba recovery disk (with XP), most original software, and a good copy of My Documents and most other old-drive contents.
  • I expect all the Microsoft updates will be the hardest part.
  • I NEED GUIDANCE, hints, tips, and warnings for set-up process.

For additional background on the problem I've been having please refer to the topic "finishing a hard-drive recovery process" in the MS-DOS forum.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! You already have most of what you need

Trying to fix this will likly be a waste of time.

Use a 'live' CD to erase the drive if needed. Most likely not needed.

Install the XP from the CD in the usuall way. Now let it format the partition to NTFS. The install should go with no problem. If it is the Toshiba recovery, it shoyuld already have the drivers.

BTW, making a 'clone' of some recent laptops models requires three drives. Or a network server. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 05, 2011, 10:33:24 AM

Solve : Windows XP Firewall - Allow all ports on only 1 IP?

Answer»

Ran into a strange issue between my Windows 7 machine and Windows XP machine in regards to firewall settings.

I found out that I couldn't ping the IP 192.168.33.1 from 192.168.33.2 in a peer to peer NETWORK, but by disabling the firewall on the Windows XP system I could ping it. The problem was that for some REASON Windows 7 looks for connectivity to the peer and I guess if it is unable to ping it, it comes up with an icon in the bottom toolbar showing network error or issue and that breaks file sharing and other data to pass thru.

I have file sharing enabled on the same work group network for the XP system so the Windows 7 system can access the data on the XP system, but the XP system can not access the Windows 7 file system, which is the way I want it. So even with file sharing ADDED to firewall exceptions, with the firewall enabled it doesnt work.

The strange thing is that about 8 months ago I had both of these systems running peer to peer with both firewalls all SET and running with no problems, so I am not sure if something changed as a result of a patch on the Windows 7 side since the Windows XP box hasnt taken any auto updates etc and was in storage until I needed it for tinkering again. Just very strange that the firewall has to be disabled on the XP system for the network to operate. *Also to note these 2 systems are linked thru a 5-port dumb switch, so its not like I have a Cisco High End piece of secure networking equipment in between that is adding to this mess.

For now I disabled the second NIC that has ties to the WWW so that the primary NIC can operate with firewall disabled and I dont have to worry about it getting attacked.

I went into Windows XP Firewall and its easy to allow specific ports to be open for an application etc, but I want to allow all traffic locally peer to peer with no restrictions on the Windows XP box private lan, and use the firewall only on the second NIC which has a physical connection to the web. Loking thru the Firewall options I didnt see any advanced options for this.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? Do I need to ditch Microsofts Firewall and go with an alternative? If so which one, and is it free to use for HOME users?Welcome to the wonderful World of Microsoft Networking!

Just joking!
You can try this:
On the XP machine install networking again. Do all the duff. Give permission to others to get into your data.
After that, reboot both machines. In a bit the XP machine should be visible on the network. If not, try to find it in a search.

And no, I have no idea why this works. If it works for you.

I have a Dell DIMENSION 2400 PC, running Windows XP, HOME Ed. with SP3.
Dell troubleshooters show all drives functioning normally. All drivers are updated/current.
Microsoft Fix-It (beta) no help -- shows "unreadable media".

Control panel "Properties" show the same for all three:

Space Used = 0
Available = 0
Capacity = 0
File system = Unknown

Primary (C:) drive shows 55 GB available Have run AVG 2011/repaired as need.

Receive no error messages BUT unable to boot to partition utility.... mouse gets frozen in midline: vertical but no lateral movement. Hence can't click on button (works fine in all other apps).I'm sorry, I really don't understand the problem(s) you are experiencing. Can you explain in detail what is going on? And if this involves partitions other than c: drive, what is on them?A: drive - no floppy disk in drive
D: drive - no CD in drive
E: drive - no SD card in card reader

... at a guess...?I suspect a weak/failing CMOS battery may have "floppyseek on boot" re-enabled if this is a recent condition...
Other than that i think Rob has nailed it...Thanks to all (Rob, Allan & Patio).

Have tried numerous "fixes" to no avail (regedit, uninstall/reinstall drivers, ETC.).

Or use the Driver CD that shipped with the PC.So if I go to the Dell site from a Non-Dell machine and enter the service tag, I can dl the appropriate drivers to a thumb drive and install on the Dell?

I presumed since it didn't even SEE that there WAS a NIC that installing the driver wouldn't help. I also presumed the OEM disc would install at least a rudimentary driver as part of the Winstall. Oh, well.

I would have figured this out on my own around midnight tonight, in a bout of swearing frustration, no doubt. Better to ask the stupid question adn save some time - my brain froze on this.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Will report back.I am not sure I understand you. You loaded a machine that was not a dell with the dell OEM cd? What happened to the dell that came with the cd?

I believe he meant he cannot logon from the Dell at the moment...Right. The Dell shows no NIC or wireless, hence no way for it to connect. THAT'S the issue. What's the service tag number? My bad....missunderstood.

Sorry about that!

Have some coffee Spoiler..... The dell drivers need to be EXTRACTED and executed on the target machine. Thy may be placed in a forlder nnamed 'Dell' in then root of drive C: and execute each wetup file. My my own ecpericnce with Dell, it is not enought to haev the driversw on the direve, You have to use the setup program for each driver set.
I reloaded by laptop with a real Dell OEM CD, only to find that I had to get more drivers off the web site. They do NOT have to be in the root folder of C:...

Nor do they need to reside in a folder named Dell...
All he has to do is install each one 1 at a time...Chipset Drivers go 1st...

Solve : Install Audio?

Answer» HI,

My sister was given a Panasonic CF-29. The volume wasnt working. My sister wants to see if I can fix the problem. When I open up ITunes, I GET this message that AUDIO/Video playback may not operate properly. Windows Media Player said it couldnt play because there is a problem with my sound device. My speakers and headphones work on my PC. Realtek 97 and some other version of Realtek was installed last week. I'm not sure what happened, but neither of these programs are under Add/Remover programs. I tried to do a restore to when these 2 programs were installed but I was unsuccesful.

The Sound & Audio Device properties- Volume, Audio & Voice tab are greyed out. I tried to change the Sound scheme from blank to Windows default. I herd a little bleep and message saying my previous scheme will be lost.

Sound video and GAME controller in Device Manager- All devices are working properly. The devices are: Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio DRIVERS, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media Control Devices & Video Codecs. Which one of these is the sound device? Audio Codecs?

I tried to download drivers at Panasonic and Realtek. They made me download Drivertool and Driverupdate. Neither of these prorgrams said I had to update my sound drivers. I tried to do a system restore to before I installed these 2 programs & I was unsuceesful. Maybe something is wrong with System Restore?

Windows Audio is set to Automatic. I have installed some updates from Windows Update. There are no more updates. And now the ony day I can try to do a restore is today. I went to BIOS and pressed F2 repeatedly and I got a noise. I dont know how to check to see my sound is disbaled or not in BIOS. The only thing I see related to Sound is Microphone Jack: PC.

And ideas? Will do restore the PC back to factory settings work? Are there audio outputs coming from the computer when playing audio files on media players or CDs? Try the Function keys to adjust volume.
To adjust the volume : Fn + F5/Fn + F6 to increase,decrease volume
To turn speaker on/off : Fn + F4The OP may wish to try this utility. It does not make any changes. It tells you what you have. It will identify the audio device.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/Everest-Home-Edition.shtmlJust follow the second option from the second answer or re-install the audio driver using another software fron hundred tools (recommended) or click next on window media player whenever u try to play musicThanks everyone for replying.

Pressing FN+F5 and the other combination didnt make a difference.

The sound drivers I have are Sigma Tel C-Major Audio. I updated this driver earlier today. But I still cant play music with ITunes or Windows Media Player.

The 5 devices under Sound, Video & Game Controller all say "Unknown location".

Another thing with Drivertool and Driverupdate. They both say that the Device for Sigma Tel is unplugged which isnt true. I turned on the speakers and turned it high as possible. When I hook it up to the Laptop, the Laptop makes a big noise.

Any other idesa? Anyone know how to restore this laptop to factory settings? I dont have the CD that came with the laptop and I dont have any Windows CD.

Everytime I try to download Sound drivers, it makes me download Drivertool, Driverupdate or some similar software that checks all my drivers & tells me which ones need update. And none of these software will update the drivers for free.Driver tool apps are nothin but Carp...
Visit the manuf. site and DLoad the proper driver...Go here http://pc-dl.panasonic.co.jp/dl/
Enter Category for drivers needed first followed by OS then Product and Model number. It is also possible that the card is not seated correctly... I've gotten some weird results from badly seated cards... might be worth a shot and it doesn't take too long to try. Otherwise, just go with the above...

Solve : User Access?

Answer»

I want to know if it is possible to set up specific user accounts that allow the user to have access to certain programs - for example - can I set up an account for my child that will allow them access to the games we have on the COMPUTER but not allow them to get to the INTERNET? Way back when, it was easy to not allow access as you had to have a password to connect to the internet but now with cable/DSL you are always connected.

Thank you for your help!!What Os are you running? XP home? XP pro?

lol I know you can turn it off because i just spent the last half an hour trying to turn mine back on

I went to network connection in my control panel to see if there were anything you could do i'm not sure what i did but i wouldn't recommend it

you can USUALLY configure this within the browser. Which browser do you use? Some games require internet, and TURNING it on can sometimes be a lengthy process if you don't know exactly what you're doing, so a browser-side change WOULD be best. I have Windows Home Edition.

Solve : Reloading OS vs trying to clean the computer of malware?

Answer»

Which is better?

The pros of backing up data, reloading OS and transferring data back is that it is a sure way to get rid of MALWARE. The only con is that actual application programs that were installed will have to be reinstalled after the OD is loaded, unless you guys know how I can transfer the applications files also. Is there a way?

The pro to cleaning the computer of malware without trying to reload the OD is that the application files are not wiped out.

Is there a way to transfer application files if I decide to reload the OD?
No.
Applications need to be re-installed...

There are apps that say they can do this but none of them i tested wrked very well...If I GO into the c:/programs folders and copy all the content, exe files and all, and then transfer these files to the new computer, then isnt that the same as having the application files and transferring them. Isnt the C:/programs folder the place where the application files from the installation are stored when you first install them? They SIMPLY will NOT RUN doing it this way...

I have a latitude c400 laptop and the bay where I insert the linksys card is damaged so I can not wirelessly connect to the internet; ...

A better long term solution would be to use a different interface for wireless connectivity. For instance, a wireless adapter that plugs into USB port.thank you for both answers;first is great till i get to buy a wireless adapter usb;QUESTION:the usb wireless adapter need to be a linksys or I saw on amazon.com the"Medialink - Wireless G USB Adapter - 802.11g - 54Mbps - Windows 2000 / XP / "

thanks1. Wireless USB Adapter. No, you don't have to buy LinkSys. Some people like to buy the same "brand" as their wireless access point (home router?) to ensure compatibility between the two devices. Since 802.11g is an established standard, I wouldn't worry about it. If your wireless access point offers 802.11n support and you want to connect using that standard; I'd recommend you buy the same "brand" USB adapter because that standard has not been "officially" accepted yet (and every manufacturer may implement the proposed standard(s) a little differently).

I really can't comment on any specific "brand" of adapter. Best bet would be to search internet for user reviews and experiences with the product.

Others on this forum may have some "product" opinions.

Solve : Windows XP Update SP2 gives Error OX80070017?

Answer»

I have a Gateway computer Model Number 500X. Serial number 0030094073 which has installed Windows XP SERVICE pack 1.

I experience a problem trying to update Windows to Service Pack 2 or 3 and getting the ERROR message OX 80070017

I have run a PC Doctor check on all hardware and have received the following error messages:-
1. Hard Drive; failed linear seek test code 2811-201
2. Memory; failed pattern test code 1011-201

The Hard Drive is a Western Digital WD 2500JB 53 EVO enhanced IDE drive.
The Ram memory is one 512 MB DDR 333HTz MY16VDDT6464AGL335C4 PC2700U-25330-B1

Questions.
1. Are the errors messages for the hardware indicating a need to change out those two items.
2. Are the hardware errors messages indicating the reason that I cannot download Windows XP Service Pack 2 and or 3
3. If changing out the Hardware, I believe any Hard drive with IDE will be OK; is this right?
4. I have heard that Windows XP Service Pack 2 and or 3 needs 1GB RAM is this so?
5. If changing the Ram do I have to replace it with the same size memory (512 MB) or can I install say 1G.

The motherboard does have two Ram (DIMMS) SLOTS so if in DOUBT about the motherboard supporting 1G RAMS then I guess I go to two 512 MB if it is necessary to support Windows XP Service PAk 2 and or 3

I would really appreciate help on these issues.1. For hard drive issues, and better results, try doing a Seagate analysis testing. [do the long analysis]
SeaTools http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=SeaTools&vgnextoid=720bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

4. I was successful with installing SP2 and SP3 with 512 Mb of RAM and my computer is very old.

Also, I think that error is because of bad media file, as in the setup file is corrupted, try downloading SP2 manually from another source or try to do a Direct download from the Microsoft website via Internet Explorer.

Is there possibly a BIOS update for the board?

I've run into situations where the CD didn't work well for loading any OS until that had been accomplished.

And what would that have to do with a BIOS update ? ?I have run into at least two instances where the CD was not a reliable boot device, no matter what boot order was established, with out the UPDATED BIOS...

I don't know if this would be a factor here, but it sounds like there may be a CD device problem...ntdlr is a file that calls up the registry to start the computer.............

Solve : User Accounts?

Answer»

I have one user account (Computer Administrator) on my XP system. I created a second account and it only gave me the OPTION to add as ANOTHER Administrator. When Windows restarted, my original account was gone; however, it could be accessed through Safe Mode. The only thing I could do is restore the system to an EARLIER date and undo the new user account.

Anyway, I want to create a new "limited" account and keep my original Administrator account. Suggestions?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279783Yeah, the Microsoft site explains how it should work, but I have a quirky situation. A second (new) user account can only be added as an administrator. The account XP was originally setup with disappears when a new admin account is created...1. Operating System. Is that Windows XP Home Edition or Professional?

2. Verify "Administrator" account exists:
a. select "Start"
b. right click "My Computer"
c. select "Manage" from context menu (an MMC console window appears)
d. expand "System Tools" category left hand pane of window
e. expand "Local Users & Groups", left hand pane of window
f. The "Administrator" user should be listed in right hand pane

3. TweakUI 2.10:
a. Download and INSTALL Windows XP PowerToy Tweak UI 2.1
b. Start "TweakUI"; "Start" -> "Programs" -> "Windows XP PowerToys" -> "TweakUI"
c. Select "Logon" in left hand pane of TweakUI window.
d. Check box for "Show Administrator on Welcome Screen".
e. Exit and reboot.

4. Logon Screen:
a. If "Administrator" not listed on Welcome logon screen, hit "Cntrl -> Alt -> Delete" twice.
b. Generic logon box should appear. Enter username "Administrator" and password.
c. Should work.

5. "Limited" Account. Not sure about this. You might have to create a "third" account which may be downgraded to "limited". Generally, you would have the "Administrator" account (which you disable), your "named" administrator account (which is a member of the "Administrators" group), and your "named" limited account (which is a member of the "Users" group) which you use to surf the internet and all non-administrative functions.

Solve : Recover Files in Safe Mode?

Answer»

History - Dell said my 8400 HD was bad, after trying to install two different new Dell supplied HD's they said mother BOARD was bad. Also had INSTALLED new memory. I do have two new Disc supplied by Dell - XP Pro SP2, and the Driver CD.

Sent everything back to Dell except kept the CD's.

Reinstalled my HD and memory.
STARTED computer and ran a system drive diagnostic. Results HD - Passed
Inserted install CD and Windows began setup, stopped during setup and gave error message that the system has a different version of Windows than the CD. Don't recall ever installing anything different.
Tried booting to original HD ( Don't remember what Dell had me do to it prior to condemning it )
computer will boot to Admin / other user Icon's once select Admin, started loading to my desktop. Once loaded all i get is my original screensaver or background picture. I don't have any ICONS on either desktop.
Booted up into Safe Mode. Selected Admin again and this time i have my desktop items. Checked All Programs and all seem to be present. All my documents items or there and i can open them. Opened up start-up menu files and nothing is in that folder.

I WOULD like to recover MY Documents items. I have a CD drive internal. Also have an external CD/R HP drive, but computer would not copy any files to this drive, or the other drives.

Need help recovering files and reinstalling windows.

Also when i booted in safe mode, there is a note at the top of the screen - at the end of the note is says SP 3. Still not sure how SP 3 got on my computer.
At Dell's logo, press CTRL+F11 and select non-destructive Windows reinstall. Will I need the boot disk at any time when i do this.
I do believe i had a virus before this all began. I have a new Mcafee subscription, i did try and install in safe mode but it would not let me without removing Norton first. I attempted this, in the Add/Remove programs but the list was incomplete had a large blank space, once i scrolled down a ways i found Norton, but again it would not let me delete in safe mode.

If i get Windows back up normal boot.
Could you please advise on any updates i should download and
what order after windows boots up, should i download next. Like my Mcafee, etc.

Thanks for the help you have given already.Quote from: cajunslo on September 19, 2009, 04:13:08 AM

Solve : XP Home repair install?

Answer»

Hi, I was doing a XP Home with SP3 on it and my disk is a SP2 and it wants a SP3 disk.
What can I do if anything at this point?

Thanks
Mike You'll have to create a slipstream disk. Try nlite: http://www.nliteos.com/If you WANT to make a SP2 disk have SP3, you need to stripstream Windows XP. nLite will be the EASIEST but you can also make it more like the disc came with SP3 than SP2 by doing a ADVANCED method. Google SEARCH "stripstream windows xp service pack" at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=strict&rls=com.microsoft%3Aen-us&q=stripstream+windows+xp+service+pack&aq=f&oq=&aqi= will have decent results.

Otherwise, you can burn a CD with SP3 on it. Make sure you have a optical drive which is compatible to CD-R. Two OS installation CDs were used for some PCs in the Windows NT4 generation.Thank you Allen worked GREAT!

Keep up the good work You're welcome.

Solve : wicked virus need help?

Answer»

alright so the other day i was on my computer and i noticed that my computer was starting to run slow.. Then like 5 mins later spyware stuff started to pop up telling me my computer was infected.. So i thought it was just some malware or virus.. I tried to start running my scanner/malware remover but my computer was freezing up.. So i decided to restart my computer(dumb decision)... When i LOGGED back on i notice i couldnt load any of my programs.. Black boxes were popping up instead of the program loading.. I cant log onto the internet, my task manager doesnt work... also when i go into control panal i cant even get into the system properties to try to do system restore.. Virtually its impossible to do anything at all.. I tried safe mode and anything possible in F8 and nothing changes or helps... Another problem is that i was thinking about just reformating my computer but cant seem to find the windows cd anywhere... I was just wondering if there is anything i could possibly do to get rid of this virus or somehow reformat my computer without the cd...

alright here is an update... I have been playing around with things for a few hours now... I can open programs if i find an unknown file, BROWSE, then try to open that file through a program.. If i click on a program from desktop or any folder in windows directly it will pop up a black box(looks like when you use RUN)and will not load.. (sry hard to explain how it looks..) So i was finally able to use malware remover program (NVT Malware Remover Tool V2) it found 3 files.. I deleted 2 of them but 1 cant be removed... So i went to the folder ( C:\WINDOWS\system32\lowsec) was the supposed bad file and i cant delete it because it says another program is using it... Remember i cant use task manager... So i used a program called CCleaner.. there it shows what programs start up when you restart your computer.. So i disabled all programs restarted my computer and went to the file, tried to delete it and it STILL says being used by another program... Any suggestions on how to delete that file or if im even on the right track lol... I cant use internet.. and i cant use RUN... or anything like that... please help if possible.. Solve : Windows Live Messenger is driving me mad!?

Answer»

I didn't know about this site until yesterday so here goes!

I don't like nor want Windows Live Messenger. Following someone's advice to get rid of it I downloaded and installed Ccleaner; clicked "Tools"; clicked "Start Up"; unticked Messenger and clicked on disable. When I next turned on my computer WLM had gone - job done, or so I thought.

During the same day I was on a site where I needed to ask a technical question of the owners; I clicked on the "ask a question here" link and Outlook Express appeared on my screen. I don't know anything about OE and am not sure I want or need it; I have a hotmail a/c for emails. Anyway having never used OE I just cancelled it and never got to ask my question.

When I next switched on my computer WLM was back I've gone into Ccleaner again and repeated the steps described above because I found that Messenger had been ticked! I'm now wondering whether the opening of OE automatically reinstated WLM - I can't think how else it happened.

My system is Windows XP service pack 3. I don't know if it's relevant but about a week ago I ticked a box in Windows Updates asking for AUTOMATIC updates on Fridays at 3a.m. The first Friday will be tomorrow so can't think it can be that

Should I PERHAPS not ask for automatic updates - I mean would an update reinstate WLM? And does OE automatically reinstate it?

My knowledge of computers and applications etc is very very basic. Any suggestions or comments would be very welcome.
1. Ccleaner is a very good program, I use it almost every day.
2. WLM - don't know why after removing it from Startup, it returned.
3. Outlook Express is a component of Internet Explorer. I don't use it either, just ignore it.
4. It's possible that one of the Windows Updates restored WLM.
5. LEAVE it on Automatic Updates, unless you are diligent about doing it manually. If there are no updates, then nothing will be downloaded or installed.
6. Microsoft Updates are 1st Tuesday of every month, but occassionally in between. Is there something wrong with simply uninstalling it?If I can find out how to uninstall I will have a go.Try these steps, see if it helps you

1. Press the Windows button on your keyboard, or launch the Start Menu using your cursor.
2. Select the "Run..." option.
3. In the prompted box, enter "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove".
4. Press the Enter button on your keyboard, or click "OK."
5. When you are prompted and asked to restart your computer, click "Yes."
I tried your suggestion but it hasn't worked. It asked me to restart computer and when I did the first thing that appeared was "windows installing" or words to that effect. I tried your suggestion again but this time nothing happened. I turned off computer and turned it on again and WLM is still there.Quote from: Highett on September 18, 2009, 05:06:42 AM

Try these steps, see if it helps you

Did you mean to leave a space between 32 advpack and also a space between INFSection and %windir? I left spaces but I just thought I'd ask...Hmm, "Windows Live" or "windows Live messenger" aren't listed in Add/remove?It's listed under Windows Live essentials and can easily be REMOVED from there instead of using the above method...I can't find anything under WLM, but there is "Messenger", and I think that is what you are after. It is an absolute Pest! Pardon my expression.
It is part of Windows XP and it can't be deleted.

But you can Disable it.
-Right click My Computer
--click on Manage
---click on Services
----select Messenger
-----change Startup type: to Disable
-----ensure Service Status: to Stopped

Hope that helps!

Thank you patio. I followed your instructions and - for the moment - it seems to have worked. I say "for the moment" because I did seem to get rid of it once before but back it came!

As well as ticking the Messenger box I also uninstalled everything else on the list under "Essentials". I just wanted to be sure Messenger didn't return by the back door so to speak in one of the other programmes on that list.Honestly I've had trouble installing the darn thing, heh.

"window product activation
this copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can log on.
do you want to activate windows now?"

then i clicked "yes"

and came up this message:

"this copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can continue using it. activation over the internet is quick and easy.
you don't need to give your name or other personal information when you activate windows.
do you want to activate windows now?

o yes, let's activate windows over the internet now
o yes, i want to telephone a customer service representative
o no, log me off

microsoft is committed to your privacy. for more information, read the windows product activation privacy statement.
to continue , click next."

but it ended up with only one option: to turn off the windows. since it was also imposible to connect to the internet with this pc.
can anyone help me to sort this problem out, please? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

#2 is the option you will need to do, select that one and it will give you the toll-free number. Call it and you will get to talk with a computer. You will need to have the 25-alphanumeric Product ID ready.thanks for the fast reply. i think i have a difficulty with the second option. since the pc doesn't have any connection with the internet. is there any other option? for example reformat the os? or anything that has nothing to do with the third options on the list above? really need any help. thanks. This is NOT a laptop?
WAIT! Do you have the original XP Install Disk? Did you get this PC from somebody else? Is it from one of the MAJOR makers, like Acer, Compaq, Gateway HP, Intel, Packard-Bel or Sony?
Did you recently replace a major component? Did you update the BIOS? Is the CMOS battery OK? Does it have the right time and date?
There must have been some event to TRIGGER the activation alert.
this is a pc desktop. i don't know whether i have the original xp or not. someone installed mostly the softwares for me. and this is not a BRANDED pc i think and doesn't represent the brands you mentioned.
as long as i could remember i didn't replace any major component. i didn't update the bios and i think the cmos battery was just fine. i have no idea about the right time and date but i the last time i saw the time on the system TRAY was correct. uhm, wait, i guess it acting like that (perhaps...i am not exactly sure though) after i installed some new update antivirus and anti malwares. and i found some trojan and sality virus on the pc. but anyway, i have deleted the virus and the malware though. yes, you are right, there must have been some event to trigger the activation alert. and STILL i have no idea what is it. any help would be much appreciated. thanks for helping. If you have a liscense key for the version of XP you are running then contact MS with the toll free 800#....How to activate Windows XP

The number is called the 'Product Key'. It is required in order to activate Windows. If you do not have this number, no one here can tell you any numbers to fill into the box.
Your number is specifically intended to be used for your copy of the Windows operating system. It is not intended to be used with any other copy of the Windows operating system, nor is the Product Key for any other copy of Windows intended to be used with your copy of Windows.

You may try looking on the computer case to see if there is a small sticker which has your Product Key on it. Some computers have this, others don't

Quote
someone installed mostly the softwares for me.

If you cannot find, or do not have the Product Key for your operating system you may want to contact that someone who installed your software to see if they can give it to you.

Otherwise, as far as I know, you have 2 choices;
You can either request a replacement product key from Microsoft or you can purchase a brand new copy of Windows.

Solve : RE: Locked PC!?

My Compac Presario with 736 MB Ram, & Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 with SERVICE pack 2 has frozen up on me. Because, I accidentally hit yes instead of cancel on a pop up that warned me that some running drivers may be affected. This was late at night when I was completeing a project. I am not able to access System Restore or Help & Support or Search. I went into System Configuration Utility & the only two were running (1. Nvidia Driver Helper, 2. Plug & Play) all others are STOPPED. The pop up that I continue to get is CPQEADM that my Easy Access Button is no longer PROPERLY working. So, how can this problem be resolved??? Thanks, Slopok Im confused here. Your CPQEADM THING isnt working, or you just cant use your computer at all, or what? The CPQ thingy is the keyboard software for that Compaq...Oh, makes since now. Cant you just use your MOUSE to reinstall the drivers? Theres an on-screen keyboard too.

i reinstalled XP and now i dont have a internet connection and idk how to set one up. please help. What was used to reinstall Windows?
Did you install all drivers, STARTING with chipset DRIVER?
Any errors in Device Manager?uhh.. have you tried creating NEW connection under the Network Connections window?Click Start then Run and type in devmgmt.msc and press enter. This will take you to device manager. If you see any yellow question marks or exclamation points, you will NEED a driver for that device. Post back with the brand and model of your computer and tell us which devices had the errors.Just follow Broni's advice. You need to install the chipset driver followed by all other device drivers.

Solve : Can't F8 or SHFT F8 at startup?

Answer»

I wanted to try and start windows with no extra drivers except for networking but when I try to F8 or SHFT F8 at the start up of my system it wont open the menu to start with minimum drivers. I can hit the DELETE key and get in bios but wont let me do the other for some reason. I am using xp and am using a gateway usb keyboard. If I can do the del key for bios why can't I get the input to work for the load screen?
1. CMOS Setup for BIOS. What USB configuration options do you have in the BIOS? Is there something for "USB Keyboard" or "USB Legacy" support?

2. Reference: You May Be Unable to Access the Windows Advanced Options Menu When You Use a USB Keyboard

3. Windows Advanced Options Menu. Use the F8 function key during system startup to access the menu. Tap the F8 key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black PRIOR to displaying Windows XP LOGO with its processing bar DISPLAY).

When the menu comes up, use the up/down arrow keys to select the line item you want.

Solve : i cant uninstall anything?

Answer»

Computer is a hp pavilion a420n. I cannot access the internet with it, wired and wireless. I can access it from other computers. Anyway, I read on the net that norton antivirus might be causing the problem, so I tried to uninstall it. Couldnt. Then I tried to uninstall some toolbars. Couldnt.

Why is this happening and how me fix

I was thinking that if I do a restore or a repair or WHATEVER from the partition that is on the computer, will Ithe applications that are on the computer stay or will they get wiped out?1) If you do a repair INSTALL it will not effect any installed programs.
2) Norton Anti Virus would not effect your ability to log on to the internet. Do NOT run your system without an anti virus utility resident. Here are the majority of the steps you can try.

1) Try a system restore?

2) If you're wanting to uninstall Norton, download their cleanwipe program. http://gluek.info/wiki/en/software/symantec-cleanwipe#download-cleanwipe .

3) Start>Run>Services.msc> Disable WINDOWS Firewall

4)ALSO, if you're able to access computers on your local NETWORK, but not the WWW, check that your LAN Settings within your internet options is set to automatically detect, or that your DNS settings are configured correctly in your local area connection adapter.

Solve : Windows XP will not "restart"?

Answer»

When the "restart" option is selected in the "turn off computer" window, Windows XP terminates but does not restart. The SCREEN goes blank and nothing happens. With a cold reboot, Windows starts up properly. Why would the "restart" function not work?Boot to SAFE mode. Now try to restart. What happens?Something has to be getting hung on the windows shut down. I forget the register KEY, but you can set Windows to show an EXTENDED message display upon shut down, showing each step of the shut down process. It's not a register, it's a registry. And apparently he can shut down, he just cannot restart - at least that's the way it sounds.Quote from: Allan on September 17, 2009, 03:16:03 PM

Don't get hung up on one key. The guy must have missed the Y key. Maybe it could be part of the boot sequence, I'm not quite sure.

Try opening the RUN box (WIN+R) and pasting this in it.
Code: [Select]shutdown -r -t 30 -c "Tell us if this works or not."

I recently got BSOD. Error was stated as Bad_Pool_header. The error can be from Driver (driver) graphics card corrupt, CPU Overheating, memory (RAM) defective...

PS: I recently plug the wireless adapter onto other computer. I swapped back after failing to connect to the internet. The adapter is like 1 month old.

First of all there's no reason to think you'll need a new computer. Second, do you get the error if the wireless adapter is NOT connected?

What changed in your system just before you saw the error the first time (did you add new hw or sw)?Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save SELECTED Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Solve : Connection strength is "excellent" but I can not access the Internet?

Answer»

Hi!

I'm in some desperate need of computer help. I have been trying for two weeks to configure my laptop and desktop to a wireless network. After reading these posts for the past two weeks, I have FINALLY been able to connect my USB adapters to the network. On both computers, the signal strength is "Excellent", yet when I open Internet Explorer, it says "this page can not be displayed".

I can access the internet via my wired connection on my laptop.

My laptop is a IBM Thinkpad and my desktop is a Acer. The laptop is using a Linksys-G Adapter to connect and the desktop is using a Belkin-G Adapter to connect. Both computers run off Windows-XP.

I have tried multiple things to fix the problem.
1) I have tried ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew
(this changed my connections to "limited or no connectivity" so I changed the settings back to configure manually)
2) I have powered down my router, modem, and computers multiple times
3) I have deleted my Temporary Internet files
4) I have disabled ICS
5) My roommate's computer is a MAC and connects fine to the router so I don't think there are any issues with ISP, router, or any of my USB adapters.

I would GREATLY appreciate any of your help! School is starting soon and I would like to be able to use the internet!

Thank you!
Tou have spent enough time on this.

The correct name is Cisco Systems.
But I can it Crisco for shorting. Is that why I keep slipping off my computer?I appreciate the Crisco jokes. Made me laugh even though I'm still having problems with my computer.

I downloaded the Cisco application and I was told that I was going to have to pay $100 to have them look at my laptop computer. I'm a college student so I didn't want to do that.

I also tried the downloading the Windows Service Pack 3 and I still couldn't connect wirelessly.
