Solve : Wireless Network Connection Fails & Fan Runs Fast?

Answer»

I'm running into a strange problem: I'm using a NEW-to-me refurbished computer. It is a HP Compaq with Windows XP Pro and SP3. The computer works great! No problems except when I try to play LotRO (Lord of the Rings Online). The internet connection seems to remain good until I LAUNCH LotRO.

What is going on: Every time I launch LotRO and log into my character I may have one or two minutes and then I receive a connection failure message "The connection to the server has been lost" and the Wireless Network Connection says "acquiring network address".

I'm noticing something else the fan runs way fast and at a high pitched sound when I launch LotRO and other programs like Windows Media Player, Nero, etc.
I'm wondering if the fan is about to go out OR is something running hot causing the fan to work over time?

I've got all the Windows updates installed.

I'm willing to listen and try any advice I can get.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Not the greatest computer but hope I can get it to work out for now:

You are running the laptop with all of this? No wonder... ISOLATE the problem first by unloading system tasks. Have you tried connecting directly by ethernet ports or wired to check the difference? Are you using DHCP or Static Address? While connected to the internet, use command line to post your network configuration and post the result. Click Start and tick Run. Type Cmd and Enter. On command prompt type->ipconfig/all > ipconfig.txt and hit Enter again and a text file naming IPConfig will be saved. Look for the text file on windows explorer, users folder. Copy and Paste them on your next reply. Hold CTRL and hit A to highlight entire text. Right-click, choose Copy then right-click and Paste on the New topic.Using a Desktop not Laptop.

Thanks Jason2074

Edit: BTW I'm not trying to run all programs at once (I think I worded it wrong in my first post) - was just trying to give examples of when I launch a program like Nero, Media Player, LotRO, etc... doesn't matter the program.

When you reboot don't you have the option to log in to the admin account?
No it doesn't show

just the new profile one.I'm not exactly SURE what you've done because you should always have the option to login to the admin account. Anyway, reboot and when the system starts begin tapping the F8 function key. Then go to safe mode and choose the admin account. From there you can either delete the new user account, change the way you login, or change it to boot directly to the admin account.

This may help: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htmhi!
well am not sure too about this but u can go to cmd then type net user user_name /delete (where "user_name" is the name of the user u created)
and then enter this is to delete the account u just created and am sure if the computer cant find that user account it must go 2 any existing user!!
which is the admin user!! This is what you'll do.

Either log out of the account or put a password on it and don;t sign in. In any case, just get to the log-in screen. Now press ALT+CTRL+DEL (and press it about three TIMES quickly, what I would do is hold ALT and CTRL and press the DEL key down quickly 3 times).

This will take you to an alternate log-in screen. Type the username "Administrator" and your password if you have one. Now that you're in the administrative account, you can delete the other account.

Solve : Internet Explorer Script Error when running Flexnet Software Manager?

Answer»

I use Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaking 11.5 which uses Flexnet Software Manager to check for and download updates. It doesn't work in DNS and when I run 'Software Manager' or 'Software Updates' from Start Men/All Programs, I get two IE script ERRORS. I have ATTACHED screenshots of both errors to this post. Nuance TRIED very hard but couldn't solve it and Flexnet don't support it if installed by another provider! The file both errors refer to ui.htm which is in the correct folder. In order to get the latest update from Nuance, I had to install DNS on a backup Win XP Home installation on the C drive (my system disk is on the F drive). DNS 'Check for updates' worked fine on that C system!
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated by me (And Nuance!!)

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]Hi and welcome to COMPUTER Hope!

To get rid of IE script errors, you MAY turn it off. Just give it a try!

What is the version of your Internet Explorer?

In my IE 8, these are the steps to turn off the Scripting Debugger:

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  • On the Advanced tab, check the following:
    • Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer) check box
    • Disable script debugging (other) check box
  • Then click Apply, then click OK.

Solve : how to track ip address?

Answer»

hello hackers..any body knows how to trace computer in its exact location?i used some website but the location is not exact..is it possible to trace computer in its exact location?
I doubt you can without sophisticated GOVERNMENT equipment, and you can only trace an IP address's location to the last ISP link. Go to http://ipaddr.es/ip-address-lookup.php and hit Go.dude it doesn't work.. Quote from: punk_sot on September 21, 2011, 02:42:49 AM

Of course!

Just follow the cord, until you hit the computer. If you want more detailed info on an IP address, go here:

Quote from: punk_sot on September 21, 2011, 03:13:42 AM
dude it doesn't work..
Obviously it won't give the EXACT location, because it traces the location of your ISP.

An IP address can be tracked to a specific computer on some situations. This usually can only happen if you have what is known as a "Static IP", which is an IP addresswhich never changes. If you are using a cable modem, you probably have one. However if you have DSL or Dial-up you likely have a "DYNAMIC IP" which changes from time to time. Although a dynamic IP can still be used to track you, it is much more difficult to do so. Not only can an IP be traced to a specific computer, if there is reason to do so, the ISP can be contacted and your personal details can be retrieved from the IP (once again, usually only if you have a static IP), although this can only be done in extreme situations, for example the FBI detecting that someone at your IP has tried to hack the PENTAGON.[/font]

What makes you think cable modems have static IP's & DSL's have dynamic IP's?
I assume you are referring to Public IP's (WAN not LAN) for both?

My ISP changes the Public IP all the time, even when I have no change in hardware, i.e. router.
I notice today, it's changed from a day or 2 ago. BTW, your public IP is shown in my signature.Yes my IP changes the WAN IP every 12 hours, just like yours. Wait isn't that the definition of a Dynamic IP? That your ISP changes your WAN IP all the time? I connect via an ADSL Broadband Connection with my router hooked up to a modem.

Solve : Dial up connection problem?

Answer»

Dear All,

I have a problem related to dial up connection.
1. I installed a software from this site http://vpn.huawei.com/en/download/spes6.3.10.exe
2 It blocked my dial up connection through some policy
3 Now when i connect my dial up connection it get disconnected as soon as it connects.

Pls help me out Huawei makes a variety of communication products. What was this software you were downloading and for what purpose?

Have you tried uninstalling it?I have uninstalled it all. It is the software for logging into employee intranet services which i have downloaded onto my personal pc and since then my wireless modem connects to dial up INTERNET and get disconnects as soon as it connects. You SURE you do not mean connecting wireless to the DSL modem that is connected to your phone line??Acutally the software link i have given above is relating to computer port management so it has blocked my the usage of USB drive in my PC. In case of doubt download the software and install into the PC and you will know the problem. But be sure that you must have that technical expertise to solve the poblem by your own otherwise you need to install a fresh copy of windows in ur pcYou insist on asking Helpers both here and in chat to DLoad install and run an .exe to figure out what your issue is on your end...
For security reasons as i stated 3 days ago this probably ain't gonna happen...
If you had done a wipe and CLEAN install as i also suggested 3 days ago your issue would be solved.

I'm tempted to CLOSE this...but i'll leave it open for the time being in case any others have seen this issue.
I do not trust the Co. or their product BTW...

Solve : computer will not start loading the OS?

Answer»

Question: hi. after my cumputer was knocked off the desk by one of my cats, it would not boot up, was not a HERD fall, hit a box first then tumbled to the floor

1. it powers up - but does not boot up - the yellow light at the push button comes on, but does not go to green.

2. the small led on the mother board light up and fan on CPU runs

3. I've replaced the mother board but did not fix it,

4. fiddled around with master and slave hard drive, did not make any difference

5. tried the system resoration disk that came with the computer - no effect

6. I suspect the drop caused damage to the hard drive but this is only a guess, and short of getting a new hard drive, I cant persue this at this time, but as said I attempted the use the slave drive after making is a master by changing the junper, but no luck

7. the keyboard briefly lights up when powering up the computer but the lights do not stay on, the monitor light blinks but monitor does not go on

any suggestions thanksThe hd is susceptible to severe jarring. Were both drive internal? If so, it's not unlikely both suffered damage.Try booting from CD or USB. That might tell you what is still working on the unit.attempted with the origional OS disk, light on CD drive goes on but otherwise no change - still blank screen, no beeps, no grunting of loading OS, no lights on keyboard- tried several diffent HD but am not sure what condition they are inPut in ONLY the current boot HDD for that machine jumpered as Master...
At this point it's a proccess of elimination...
Double check all connections while hooking up the drive and remove and re-seat vid card and RAM chips with all power disconnected...Installed a new hard drive, new CPU in addition to the prior mother board replacement, and still no change - fan runs, but no screen on monitor, the indicator light on the computer, at the on switch stays rellow INSTEAD of going to green, reseated the vid card So far, it looks like the only new things you haven't put in are the power supply, CD drive, RAM, and video card. All but the CD drive can prevent a computer from booting. Generally, RAM and video will produce a beep code as well (not always though).

First, follow Patio's advice of again reseating everything and only with the one hard drive, and double check all the connections (hard drive cable and power cables).

If the computer still isn't giving you the POST, even after you've changed the motherboard, hard drive and CPU, I would suspect the power supply was possibly damaged in the fall. A damaged power supply can appear to work normally, making fans spin and such, but COULD in fact have a problem. Do you have another power supply you could put in there for testing PURPOSES?

Aside from what you've already changed, I can't think of anything else that could have been damaged in the fall. It's unlikely the RAM was damaged, as the jarring would have only knocked a chip out at most, but not likely damaged it to the point it wouldn't work.

Solve : cannot access files - error message, "No Access"?

Answer»

My wife's old desktop computer DIED. (I think it is the motherboard.) It ran on Windows XP. I took the hard drive from my wife's computer and put it in a second computer as the d drive, hoping to copy the FILES to an external drive. The second computer had a ribbon connector that fit the old drive perfectly. I can copy the files located in the Shared Documents FOLDER to the external drive, but not any of the files in the user accounts. When I select any of the folders representing the 3 user accounts, the MESSAGE "No Access" appears. When I initially set up my wife's computer, the various user accounts had no password to log-in with the EXCEPTION of the administrator account which I also do not have access to. Does anyone have any ideas how I can gain access the the old drive (now a d drive) either using windows or dos commands? Thanks!Take Ownership...Thanks for the article. When I get home I'll give it a try.Anytime...

Any files you may have opened might have links that appear in the "Recent" section of the Start menu (if this is enabled). However, clicking on any of them will just result in Windows attempting to find the files which, unless the drive is plugged in, won't be found.

Depending on what you're doing, there might also be temporary files on the computer somewhere. You could download a program like CCleaner, which will delete temp files and such.

Post the desktop models/brand and operating system running. Did it work before? if they are connecting on LAN, look for TCP/IP(IPV4) on your network adapter by right-clicking device and choose Properties. Highlight TCP/IP and hit Properties. Solve : Windows update pains?

Answer»
How many different ways can Microsoft cause pain with the update FEATURES?

I am trying to update a laptop and keep getting the same set of error messages, the FIRST comes up when I go to the Windows update page. It comes up whether I choose Express or Custom. "Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue: (*)Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
() Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem."

If I go with the recommendation I get

403 - Forbidden: Access is denied
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.

I am an admin on the DOMAIN and have logged in that way on the laptop. I thought maybe it was the WIRELESS network and tried it with an ethernet cable, but got the same results.

Then I got the idea to install SP3 from disk. All was going well, the files were extracting and then I got a small error box that said ACCESS DENIED.

I installed IE8 from cd with no problem and the Windows update agent is already installed. I have rebooted, tried different admin accounts and still can not get this to update correctly.

I had a similar problem but found that DISABLING Microsoft update and just using Windows update solved it. That did not work with this laptop.

Any ideas to fix this would be GREATLY appreciated.

ThanksIs it possible to manually download the updates from the Microsoft website and install them?Your a domain admin but are you a admin on the machine?

Answer»

Hi, I got window xp , few days ago, I was connected the philips spz2000 web cam to my computer, after I was DOWNLOADED the driver, the computer SHUT down suddenly and couldn't start again , then i was decided to reload the system, however, when it was start to copy the files, the message came up, it was said that it couldn't copy the files, I either to try again or skip to copy the files, I had tried to do both and the result were same, I couldn't continue to reload the system. Please help! Thank you.Are you SAYING you want to format the drive and install XP from scratch? If that's the case, boot to your XP CD, delete the partition, recreate it, format and install. Thanks for your replied, I did what you ADVICE, however, when it was trying to format, the message was keep saying couldn't copy the files and couldn't carry on reload the system, can you think of anything to solve the problem?Has the hard drive been dropped? What is the model of your computer? You might have to take the hard drive out and format it with a working computer to see what happens....Are you booting to the CD? Is it an original, retail XP CD? What is the EXACT message you get and at what point do you get it?Hi, the hard drive hadn't been dropped, I was tried put in another hard drive in to reload the system, however the same message appear again, I did try to skip it as the message SUGGEST me to skip to copy the file, then the message came up again but said couldn't copy the other files!,thanks!

Solve : Debunking properties of mass/*censored*??

Answer»

the image says it all. normal is tht size on disk is always larger

this is proprties of all files in C drive (winxppro sp3)I don't think you know what the English word "debunking" means. Never mind. Files are written on disks in small fixed areas called clusters. If you use NTFS it's probably 512 bytes in size for each cluster. A 1024 byte file will take up 2 clusters. A 1025 byte file will take up 3 clusters. The remainder of the 3RD cluster is called slack space. That image shows 0.20 GB total slack space.

thanks nyway that make SENSE, but ive tot of tht, and i croscheck to find tht i always turn compresion off. its only on this partition this strange thing is happening. If it contains a System Volume Information folder, then the difference may be reserved space perhaps. Have you done a disk check (chkdsk)?i did it without System Volume Information folder, its still same,

AAA it cud be that a specific file or folder is compressed,
this is such a trivial matter anyway lol. thanks

Any ideas anybody?

Ashfield.Did you try going to your Control Panel-Sounds and Audio Devices-Sounds tab-then choose from Program Events for Systems Sound? There is also a Windows service startup that might be disabled that you need to check.
1.Click Start and the Run, Enter
2.Type services.msc - Enter.
3. Look for Windows Audio(check if its startup type is in Automatic).
4.If not, double-click Windows Audio and choose Automatic Startup type.
5. Make sure to hit Apply-Ok.Hi Jason2074, checked your advise and auto is ENABLED, all other sounds work fine its just the back/forward sounds that have stoped once again!

They are all here. Scroll down and highlight from your choice and choose from list of Sounds and try playback to test.

I actually lost clicking or system sounds currently too. Might check this on the NEXT startup of PC also. But still they are enabled under Sounds tab.
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/disable-start-navigation-clicking-sound-in-ie/Hi again Jason 2074 and thanks for the tip, I have found the problem and it was indeed in the sounds/programme events/windows explorer/information BAR. So how this got disabled I just do not know, could have been one of the windows updates perhaps as they so often do change settings and you do not discover them until later - what a pain!!

I am going to make a note of this for next time.

Thanks again.

That error is typically caused by bad or conflicting drivers. Have you recently updated any drivers?

1) Look in device manager - any errors?
2) Check for an updated chipset driver
3) Check for a bios update

Let's go from there.Thank you Allan.

No driver updates installed for many months and then only for a generic modem. I've tried uninstalling that driver but because the system CRASHES spasmodically cannot be sure that driver was the cause. If no crash for another week I'll reinstall the driver and go from there. No crash for 5 days.

1. No device manager errors.

2. Chipset driver update found but the Intel Driver Update Utility carries this warning The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility provides functionality for AGP and USB, not drivers for AGP or USB. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS UTILITY IF YOUR DEVICE MANUFACTURER IS RECOMMENDING IT TO CORRECT AN "AGP DRIVER," "AGP GART," OR "USB DRIVER" ISSUE; IT WILL NOT CORRECT YOUR ISSUE.

3. Bios update not found..

Try disabling onboard USB controllers on your BIOS settings(if available). Does it still bluescreens? You could ALSO use SystemFile Checker to check for any errors. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43051.htmlDoes the blue screen error randomly or when you are performing a specific function (or when a usb device is connected)?Bsods occur randomly whether or not there is a usb device connected, but no bsod now for nine days. I will reinstall the modem driver shortly and see what happens.

Thanks.

I want that when ever my PC bootss it should auto play a particular SONG in Windows Mediaplayer.
How can I chang its setting
Try USING the format: "\WMPLAYER" "\"

Example:

Code: [SELECT]@echo off
"c:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" "C:\Documents and Settings\Zzyzx\My Documents\My Music\Mountain-Nantucket Sleighride.mp3"

The above is how you do it from the command line. Use the example to create a batch file on your disk. Create a shortcut to that same batch file in you startup folder.

1 press any key to booot cd
2 cd starts set up

What new hardware/drivers have changed since this PC worked ? ?im not sure as im attempting to fix it for a friend, i shall ask him tommorrow

in the mean time anything i can try?Well, you can check the RAM and the hd:

To check the ram, download MEMTEST (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a DEDICATED .iso BURNING utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

To check the hd, go to the website of the hd manufacturer and download their diagnostic utility. Burn it to cd, boot to it and run it.Additional information for that error can be found HereQuote from: jason2074 on July 31, 2011, 10:56:45 PM

Solve : Ipod2 Mac Apple Wifi cant connect?

Answer»

Anybody can help me, ipod2 mac apple cant connet to wifi... only WPA, WP2, Interprises.... my router has only Personal...

Where I can find the Radius Server IP?

Help me please"Personal" on your router MEANS that it is using WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK(not enterprise, which requires a radius server.) Your iPod touch should show your router's SSID on the WiFi list-just tap on it and enter your password.only enterprise is in ipod touch... no PSK.....no SSID found...only Name then security...when I tried to other router, password request appear....i can connectIs your router wireless?

Check your router configuration from your PC to MAKE sure wireless is set up properly:

========================================================

The standard default IP addresses for routers are 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1

This is dependant on the make and model of the router.

The default login is usually a variation of "admin".
It may be login admin, password admin
It may be login blank, password admin
It may be login admin, password blank.

If they don't WORK, check your router's manufacturer's site.

Of COURSE both the IP address and admin passwords can be changed, so yours may not even be close to them. Worst CASE scenario would be to do a hard reset of the router, putting it back to it's factory default state... Meaning no wireless security, but it would revert back to factory default login as well.

Look up the manufacturer's website and you should be able to find the support documentation for your specific router.

You should change your router's default username and password.

Solve : Computer won't start up.?

Answer»

My parents have a 5+ year old HP desktop (might be closer to 10 years old, actually). It has Windows XP sp3, 2GB of ram, and around an 80gb hard drive. I believe they have Mcafee AV. Yesterday my dad was surfing the internet when the AV told him it discovered some viruses and it deleted them. TODAY, however, when we went to turn on the computer, it would not start up. The computer goes through the initial diagnostics, very quickly, and then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor. It doesn't move from there.

I've already used a Linux live CD and everything from the CD worked fine. I was able to connect to the internet, the monitor displayed everything fine, etc. I was even able to mount my hard drive and view the files on it. So it doesn't seem to be a problem with the RAM, video card, hard drive.

I've used the Windows Recovery Console and had it write a new boot sector. However, when I tried to get it to give me a new master boot record, it warned me that this may leave my partitions inaccessible so I did not GO along with that.

I've tried using a program called ERD Commander 5, which allowed me to do a minimal system RESTORE, but that did not fix the problem. I also used the program to scan system files for corruption but it did not find any.

Any suggestions on what I can try further, save for a fresh install of Windows or something else that will wipe my data and programs, is greatly appreciated.Well, that's not a hardware related issue since your Linux Distro is working perfectly on your computer. So, I bet that some startup files were infected, then McAfee deleted them but these were vital for Windows to boot and now they are missing.

Use the Live CD to back up all your important files to an external HDD or a Flash Drive, just in case. Did you try to insert your Windows CD/DVD and attempt to repair your Windows installation?I don't have a real Windows installation CD, I just have one I made myself previously from the computer's i386 file. I'm not really sure what to do from the command prompt with it. I have a set of 2 DVDs titled HP System Recovery but it says it will restore the operating system and all applications to their original state but would leave data alone. I was hoping to fix this with everything in tact but that probably won't happen. I can use my laptop to store a backup of the hard drive from the desktop. However, if some files are still infected, would copying them over on to my laptop cause the virus to spread? If you copy files that are already infected, then it will. There are anti-virus apps for Linux as well, so that you can scan your computer while you are using the Live CD. Re-formatting your hard drive by using the Restore Disc (after you get backup) wouldn't sound that bad however.

Also, you can give "Trinity Rescue Kit" a try. It's a Linux Live CD with many apps (including Anti-Viruses) that will help you repair your Windows Installation. See http://trinityhome.org/I've been using Trinity Rescue Kit, actually. It found more viruses and it said it quarantined them but then I think it deleted them. I was stupid and didn't save a list of the files but I believe some were system files from the windows/system32 folder.Quote from: lakerzz8 on August 26, 2011, 02:57:31 PM

I've been using Trinity Rescue Kit, actually. It found more viruses and it said it quarantined them but then I think it deleted them. I was stupid and didn't save a list of the files but I believe some were system files from the windows/system32 folder.

Then that's likely why you can't boot. Backup anything important, format, and reinstall Windows. Scan your backed up files as well. I'd recommend doing this over a repair install because the repair install will not eliminate any remaining viruses.Sorry it has taken me so long to respond but I've been busy these past few days. I ran another Trinity Rescue Kit virus scan and this time it found no viruses. However, the computer was still not starting up. I decided to backup the files I needed and used the HP System Recovery DVDs to do a full system recovery and restore everything back to the computer's out of the BOX state. That worked, the computer started up again and I felt like it was 2003 again! I used PCdecrapifier and ccleaner to get rid of all the junk I didn't need, installed an AV, and got the backed up files back on the computer. I ran a full antivirus scan and it just came up with one tracking cookie and nothing else. I've got my files, the computer works, and I'm slowly working on getting all my programs back. Thanks to everyone who spent their time trying to help.Couldn't have been better news...glad you followed a backup procedure before wiping...
You have no idea how many Tales of woe we see here from people that don't know it wipes the HDD and all data...
Congrats !

Solve : cd-rw disk problems?

Answer»

i have a lot of stuff i have put on CD. And for some reason know when i put them in my drive they say there is nothing on them. What am i doing wrong. what do i do to solve it.When you burn a project to CD/DVD you have to finalise the burn...otherwise the CD shows as empty...
What app are you burning with ? ?
I presume that your statement "for some reason know" (that know =now) . That being so the current situation is "new" and that they previously could be read. Is that true? Are you trying to read them on the same computer that they were created on? Plus patio's question.
truenorthi did not burn anything i formatted the disc and put the files on them know when i look at them they say there empty and not sure if it was this computer or anotherWith RESPECT are we dealing with a mother tongue (yours) that is other than English? The reason i ask this question is your statement "i did not burn anything i formatted the disc and put the files on them". What you have just DESCRIBED is "burning " to a disc. Taking a blank cd(-R;+R or RW ) and with the use of a software program placing data (could be music/data/video) on the disc (recorded to the disc via an optical device such as what is commonly referred to as a "cd burner". Is that not what you did? By your process have you EVER been able to read from such a disc? truenorthyes i was able to view the cd in the past and i am pretty sure it was on another computerhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/321641#letmefixit

From the Microsoft site-"How to troubleshoot common problems that occur when a Windows-XP based computer cannot read a burned CD/DVD."Only a suggestion:

Never use RW disks. They may only be readable on the drive that wrote them and with the software that wrote them.

Use CD-R (ROM) disks and always finalize them, when done writing.
Don't even use Multi-Session..... again that can get real iffy (hazardous).

Only use a well known and trusted burning software like "Nero" for the most reliable recording (Burn),
that's reliable to read on any CD/DVD drive anywhere.

This suggestion is based on my many years of experience with CD's and DVD's. (20+ years)
That includes BAD experiences as well as good ones. I gave away the last RW disks that I had in the house.

Good Luck!

What's all this stuff about "burning" disks? Yes, I know about Nero Burning Rom, etc. But has everybody else on here forgotten about UDF, the Windows Drive Letter Access thing? Packet writing, where you "format" an R or an RW disk and just drag stuff to it in the Windows GUI? Could be Nero InCD or the Windows XP I think the OP is probably TELLING the truth when he says they didn't "burn" anything. Most PC systems from Dell, HP, IBM, SONY and Toshiba come with DLA pre-installed or prepared for installation.

bigrideman, the disks may have become unreadable. If you did use the drag and drop CDRW method I mentioned above, then there are tools you can try, including MiniTool Power Data Recovery which has a free version which supports UDF

http://www.powerdatarecovery.com/download.html

ST-never thought of that.Let's hope you are right (and that the O/P comes back to clarify). truenorthIsoBuster works great for retrieving dat on both types of burned CD's...no matter what app is used.
Not sure there is still a Free version floating around there so search it out.

Candidly, I've never run across that stop error before. What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?Try Start/Run type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
let it run to completion and re-boot...
Do NOT interrupt the process...

If not i would suspect a flakey PSU...borrow a known GOOD one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there overnite...you'll know right away.my CD rom is not working its damaged.. and the sfc process is asking for windows cd.., and USB are disabled.. please its getting worst...

Yes, disparaging comments seldom help. The FORUM has allowed this thread to continue beyond the normal duration of what should be a basic problem. It is now too long to get a clear picture of what the ISSUE really was.
But the OP has said that now he has a perfect copy of his drive, so this thread should be considered solved. Even if the solution is not weld understood.I actually find it interesting that it wasn't until the last Post that he mentioned a RAID array...which changes all dynamics of the advice being given...

Solve : Boot problems Windows XP?

Answer»

Sudden power outage. Black SCREEN with blinking cursor. Windows would not boot. Put in CD of Windows xp. Hit R for repair, got dos cursor. TYPED in chkdsk/r. That ran and then At the command prompt typed fixboot and hit ENTER ("Y" to agree to perform command)
Then type fixmbr and hit ENTER ("Y" to agree to perform command)
Typed EXIT. Goes into Windows Welcome screen to continue install(I didn't want to reinstall!). But I continued on to see if this MIGHT be a way to repair.
Then get a msg on the screen The file 'ialmnt5.sys' on Intel(R) Extreme Graphics Windows 2000/XP Installation Disk needed.
Even if I had the disk for that, the computer is now frozen and cannot do anything (not even ctrl/alt/delete). Can you tell me what I can do without having to go through a whole reinstall? I am new to this and really need help.
Dell Windows XP Home Edition.
Thanks!
TTake the CD out of the drive. Power down. Start back up. What happens?I get the Dell logo->windows screen then "SETUP is being restarted...." Then the msg "Please insert windows xp home ed service pack 2 cd". I do that and it runs "Preparing installation" that runs for maybe 5-10 mins then Then get a msg on the screen "The file 'ialmnt5.sys' on Intel(R) Extreme Graphics Windows 2000/XP Installation Disk needed." and it freezes. It will not read any CDs in the drive and cannot do anything (not even ctrl/alt/delete).
PLUS it will not power down. I unplugged the power in the back to shut it down.Try booting into safe mode. Can you do that? What model Dell? Is the XP an OEM Dell CD?
The ialmnt5.sys file is a driver file for video cards. That means that you need to find the correct file for your video card.
Your best bet of doing that is to just re-install your manufacturer’s video card drivers by go saft mod and go Device manager finding VGA driver and uninstall it or Disable for test.

Other hand May your windows have update to SP 2 or 3 and u got CD Windows XP to may conflict with patches or other drivers on each of Windows XP Home.

Thank.

Solve : laptop not booting up as normal?

Answer»

hi there. I've a problem with my laptop. It's a dell LATITUDE 6400. It has a sticker SAYING it was built for windows vista but I've installed xp on it. It was working fine then the other day when I turned it on it does the first dell screen then goes to a black screen wit a COUPLE of lines of writing. That's normal for it but it stops there and goes no further.

I've stuck in my windows disk but it just goes to the screen asking what partition i want to install windows on. I've stuck in a disk with ubuntu on it and I can boot up with that and see the files on the hard disk are still accessible. So I think the drive itself is ok.

I've also tried holding F8 when it's BOOTING up but it doesn't go into safe mode.

What can I try to fix this?

thanks When you switched to XP did you re-install XP drivers for that model # ? ?See Here...hi guys. thanks for the posts. i did install the correct drivers as i said it was workin fine for about 5 months and just suddenly stopped. any ideasTry with this link:

Solve : Best way to reinstall OS?

Answer»

Hi, I've had problems with Trojan viruses on my computer (Dell Inspiron 1300). A system restore seemed to fix it but I was warned not to access my bank account online until I had wiped the hard disk.

I was told recently that I could copy the OS onto recordable CDs prior to wiping the hard drive and that it would be a far easier process than using the discs that came with the computer. Is this the best thing to do? I've never had to reinstall before. Quote from: Ismenia on September 14, 2011, 10:20:52 AM

It is the best thing (and most convenient thing) to do for many reasons, including backing up software and driver installs. However, you want to make sure that you do not make an image of your computer while you have any viruses. If your computer is already infected and you are contemplating a full hard drive wipe followed by an install, you should use the install discs that shipped with your PC.

If the system restore image was made before any signs of malware cropped up, all should be fine; but seeing that the situation involves something as confidential as a bank account, you should probably wipe your hard drive (after backing up all necessary documents.)I would never trust an image made from an infected MACHINE...

What apps did you run to clean it out ? ?

To be on the safe side i'd visit our Virus and Malware section ...follow the Guide for posting your LOGS and see if they can sort you thru it with a clean bill of health...only at that point would i consider a drive image as the way to go...

A bit time consuming ...but worth it nonetheless...If you DO decide to start from the beginning, do the following:

1) Boot to the OS cd. Choose the option to delete existing partition(s) and then recreate the partition(s). Format, and then install the OS

2) Install all drivers starting with the chipset driver.

3) Install a good AV

4) Download and install all Windows software updates (never install hw or diver updates from Windows Update - those should only and always be installed from the OEM WEBSITES).

5) Install disc imaging software (Acronis True Image if you want to pay, Macrium Reflect if you don't) and create an image to a second hd or cd.Thanks for your help guys.

Since I'm doing this for peace of mind re my bank accounts etc. I suppose I should use the INSTALLATION CDs.

I have AVG and Malware destroyer. Once the system restore was done they did not register any viruses. The friends who advised me not to assume that the virus was gone are both a bit paranoid but I prefer that approach to a complacent one when it comes to things like bank details.

When it comes to wiping the hard disk some online guides say to use DBAN. Is this necessary/preferable to using the OS's own methods. I'm not planning to get rid of the computer so I am not concerned about removing all trace of personal data.Quote from: Ismenia on September 15, 2011, 04:03:25 AM

Solve : Boot error?

Answer»

These are some troubleshooting TIPS to try if the problem suddenly occurred and you have not made any modifications or changes to your system hardware.

1-Ensure no CD/DVD or Floppy disks are inserted when attempting to boot.

2-Unplug any connected USB storage devices. CAMERAS, Phones and iPods have been known to cause this boot problem as well.

3-Ensure that your system BIOS lists the hard DRIVE as one of the boot devices. In addition, set the boot order in BIOS to allow the hard drive to become the first boot device.

4-Ensure your hard drive is recognized during system post. If it is not, check your cables and connections.

If the computer is a new build or you have made hardware changes to your system, like installing a new CD, DVD or hard drive, use the FOLLOWING troubleshooting tips.

1-If you have recently installed a new hard drive, CD/DVD drive, check the jumpers on the drives. In some cases, with older IDE cables, you cannot use the Master and Slave jumper settings and you must use Cable Select.

2-As a last resort, you may need to perform a System Repair if your system has become corrupted.

Solve : windows updater?

Answer»

Hello people I am new to this site and hoping for some insight. Windows automatic update will not work , bits statues is started but still will not work. This happened after acquiring the windows security VIRUS. Aside from updater the computer seems to be running fine after what i think was a successful removal. I am running xp sp3. I have tried changing bits from automatic to manual and back with no success. Please HELP! What apps have been used in the " removal" ? ?Spybot then malwarebytes. Could not get malbyte to run until DOWNLOADING and running spybot in SAFE mode. Many newer infections block MBAM from running...
My guess is you're still infected...

Clik Here...For future reference, if something doesn't run when you have a virus, you can often just rename the file and the program will run. This is not always true because some viruses look up the window title, but others just look at the filename.

Solve : Too many Windows?

Answer»

Hi.
Due to many and various problems with my COMPUTER, I have, over time tried a number of reinstalls. I am now in the position of having six Windows XP on my computer. Can anybody tell me a simple way to get rid of at least four of them?

As I'm not that CLEVER with computers, any replies in simple speak would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.
Hecate.

Win XP home.- MoBo ASUS A8N5X.- Amd Athlon 64-3200.- NVIDIA GeForce 6 200 Cache.I'm not even going to ask why you did it the way you did - but I can tell you if it were my system I'd format and start from scratch.

Having said that, let me answer your question. Boot to the Windows installation you want to keep. Then OPEN Windows Explorer and delete all of the other Windows folders (don't worry, Windows won't let you delete the folder for the installation to which you are logged in). Then edit the boot.ini file and delete the entries for all of the installations you deleted. Make a copy of the file first just in case you delete the wrong entries.

Solve : BIOS has a floppy in it, why ??

Answer»

Welcome back.
Just keep waiting. Someday they will make a BIOS that does not show floppy support. Just a matter of time.
By the way; If you wait long enough, they will make automobiles that do not have cigarette lighters.
Quote from: martinmm on December 23, 2010, 10:23:54 PM

my computer never had a floppy installed.
Doesn't make a difference. Do you really believe that every single computer uses a completely different BIOS that is specially made for that machines CONFIGURATION? No. If a machine doesn't come with a floppy DRIVE, it simply has the option disabled- because there isn't one. Just as if you don't have a secondary hard DISK, that setting is disabled as well. Just because a machine doesn't come with a given peripheral doesn't mean it should use a BIOS that preemptively disables that feature for no good reason.

Quote
it setting is DISABLE or not installed but
Good. Although the only difference in your case is that if you had it enabled and no floppy drive was installed you would simply get a 'Floppy disk(s) fail' (or something similarly worded) when you start the machine. My computer has an option for a floppy drive, and in fact I have one installed. It's not old.

Quote
should there be a bios with out the floppy?
No. That would be pointless.

Quote
I don't understand it being there at all.
Consider the scenario where you want to install a floppy drive. You would install it, toggle the option appropriately, and then you're done. (or of course some other person does it for you) if the BIOS, for some STUPID reason, didn't support floppy drives at all, you couldn't install one no matter how hard you tried. What reason is there to close off such configuration paths?

Quote
i don't know what will affect the install
It won't. Trust me, of all the things to worry about when installing a new Operating system, whether it will somehow have problems dealing with a BIOS just like every single other BIOS out there in it's offering of floppy-drive features should probably be the least of them.

Solve : Active Desktop Recovery?

Answer»

Has anyone had this come up before on your computer? Just over night, one day fine and the next day the screen is WHITE with this message in big red letters. I have tried all the solutions posted, but nothing worked. How can I get my desktop back?Yes, I have, after removing a bad stick of RAM from a computer. The desktop shortcuts still remained, though, but the wallpaper was the Active Desktop Recovery notification. I right-clicked on the desktop, clicked "Properties," went to the "Desktop" tab, and selected a new wallpaper. Everything went fine after that.A big Thank You. That was simple.

Now do you know ANYTHING about uninstalling a program that doesn't want to be uninstalled?I personally use http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/features to UNINSTALL programs COMPLETELY, i.e. no leftover files in the Windows Registry. I have also HEARD good things about http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html. The freeware version should suffice.I've used those both and it still didn't work?I deduce that when you hit the "Uninstall" button, nothing happens. If so,

Solve : OS problems?

Answer»

Hi there! I've joined this website in hopes of finding someone who might know what the heck is going on with my computer lately. I am using Windows XP system pack 3 Version 5.1 and recently when I try to open most of my programs a message will pop up saying I'm using an unsupported OS ( windows xp or later needed). I just tried downloading utorrent and it says utorrent doesn't support the windows 2000 OS but I'm not using windows 2000! The same thing happens with just about everything else. I don't have anything checked in the compatibility box so I'm really confused. I'm not too great with COMPUTERS so If there is any information about my computer that I could give you to help please let me know. Thanks! 1) What is new or DIFFERENT since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new HW, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Run full system scans with BOTH your anti virus APP AND with MalwareBytes1) I had just had my friend install the OPERATING system and had not restarted it since. After the first restart of the computer the problem started.
2)I'm using avast and have run a full scan but nothing is coming up Did your friend use a legitimate, retail OS disc to install? I'm guessing not.No it's not. :/And there you have it...

Here is the answer:

1. If you did not send these messages, someone is falsely using your email address as a FROM or REPLY TO address for spam messages they are sending. You are getting the invalid TO addresses. There is nothing you can do. They are not using your account.

2. They probably harvested your email address from the web because you used it as a forum screen name or made it public in some other way.

Solve : Disabling Language Change?

Hi all,

I'm running Win XP Pro. I NEED to be ABLE to stop anyone changing the language on the computer, i.e. locking it to ENGLISH only and stopping anyone changing it to another language. Is there a way to do this?

Cheers
SimonYes there is, you need to disable it in Language Settings in the Control Panel.Hi Quantos,

YUP, but how do I stop someone going back into Control Panel, Language Settings and just putting a second language in. I need a way to stop this happening, at least difficult enough so that they would need to install some languages from a CD or something like that.

The issue is that I have some equipment ATTACHED to this PC that is run by some software that gets completely confused when someone sets a language with commas for decimal points etc. So I need a way of stoping the language being changed.

Any thoughts?

If they can be downloaded they can be saved. That is what "downloaded" means, so what do you mean "can't be saved"? State what browser you are using. DESCRIBE how you attempt to save them and what happens. Describe any messages that you see. Explain what "Oodoo" is...To Salmon Trout:
Browser used - FIREFOX

They are not being save to the desktop, they are saved to your Download folder. You can configure FF to save to any location, you determine wher that is.Computer_Commando,
Tried again as suggested. Nothing saved in download folder or any other folder used. Search shows negative result.

What happens when you look in Firefox options? Have you tried:

Seeing what the options are at present?

Playing around with the various settings on the "General" tab?

Seeing what happens when you alter some of them, for example setting or changing the "Save files to" folder, or setting "Always ask where to save files"?

Checking "Show the Downloads window"?

Doing some or all of these things and seeing if anything CHANGES might help to shed some light.

Also, when did you do a complete virus and browser hijacker scan? Have you tried starting Firefox in safe mode?

Can you download OK in Internet Explorer?

This is what you get if you use the Welcome Screen

This is what you get if you don't use the Welcome Screen

Are you saying that before, you had the new style icons but no Welcome Screen?

Solve : recovery console (windows xp)?

Answer»

hello can any body explain to me y my computer hangs-up (decreases speed) after installing recovery CONSOLE..but after i installed windows installer 3.1 (kb893803) it is now okWhat do you mean by "hangs up?" Do you mean random crashes while USING the computer?Installing the recovery console has zero EFFECT on the performance of Windows - it will only slow the LOADING time by the time you have the option to boot to the recovery console display at startup. EXACTLY what are the issues you are having?
