Solve : Freaky Thing?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 with Windows XP Home Edition. When you do anything it will sometimes just look up. Both CD Drives act like they are trying to read something but aren't. And every now and then one of the CD Drives will just pop open for no REASON! I've scaned and scaned and there are no viruses. What's wrong with my PC?Goku......Sounds like you may have a bug or two in your puter. Firstly ......do you have all the current PATCHES and upgrades from MS......
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Then I would suggest downloading Ad-Aware......
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/          get the free one.
THen download......SpyBot ........
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=spybotsd          its free also
Another good one is Spysweeper.....
http://www.spysweeper.com/download.html     free as well.

I think if you make sure your MS updates are current and you D/L and scan with the suggested utilities your
gremlins will be gone.

Hope this helps

dl65   :)Hey, thanks man. I just did all of that and so far, so good!My computer is WORSE now! It won't even read one of the CD Drives! What do I do? run a worm trojan scan>.http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/  it may also pay to keep this software or download it to a floppyWell, we're ok right now!I can't answer your question, but I have had two Presarios[new] ,in the last three months. I had and am having all kinds of trouble. I sure will leave Compaq alone on buying my next computer. :)GREAT advice,
I also found that it worked out well for me,
thanks freaky thing!!!Have you opened computer chasis? Maybe a cable is not properly plugged in... (better ask a tehnician from Compaq or from where you buyed your new Compaqs).
When did you buyed your computer? Have you changed a lot of programs on it? When did you installed the last time Windows?

Solve : erc locking failed ASUS MB AMI Bios?

Answer»

Hi friends,   erc locking  not  on  ASUS  help  website...soooo...

Asus mother board  P4P8X...063

==============
AMI Bios Error Message.. Celeron cpu

OS Settings Wrong

OS  Date/Time not set

erc locking failed **************

Please  enter  setup  to  re-config your  system

F1 - to run  setup

F2 - to  load  default  values and continue

=============================

With the  above  message  in  mind, I replaced  the  2032  button
Bios  battery.  The old  one  was  low.   Then I  reset  the  bios time  and  date  to
the current  time.

That  corrects the wrong  OS,  as  XP  was  not  on  in  2003,  the  default year  that  the bios  defaults  to.

‘Erc  locking  failed’  is  not  known  to  me  but  it  is  still  a  problem  as  the
computer  starts  after  a  long  delay.  It  does  run  for  a  while  but  I  can  hear  a  relay  snapping  as  if  to  lock  in.

The  box  will  SUDDENLY  SHUT  down  without  warning,  especially  when  TRANSFERRING files  to  or  from  a  memory stick  or  device.

==============================
Your  ideas  about  what  the  problem  is  and  what  has  to  be  done  for  a  fix  is
very  welcome.  TonyGuitar
Without more info are are some possibilities to ELIMINATE:
A. Overheating
B. Bad RAM stick
C. Failing Power supply
D. Bad Hard Drive
E. USB device conflict

See if you can find a way to eliminate the above. For example, put a large desk fan behind the case a blow a lot of air at it to bring down the temps. If it takes longer before failure, assume heating issue. Even tho that is a super SIMPLE test, there are some techs out there that never think  of doing that.

But if it is not heat-related, go to the next item in the list. Resubstitute other RAM and see what happens. And so on down the list.Geek,
Very  clever,  that  fan  idea...gonna  do  that  and  re-seat  the  ram  sticks.  Funny  how  there  seems to  be  no  reference  to  ' ERC  LOCKING'  on  the web or  Asus  tech website.

AMI,  who  make  the  bios, explain  that  error  messages  are  set  by  the  motherboard  maker  and  not  by  AMI.    Learned  something  ..eh?   Thanks,  I'll  be  back.  TGIf you keep getting the ERC code, you have to clear the CMOS. Or else there is a jumper on the Motherboard to disable the ERC feature. Is ERC in the documentation for that motherboard?

Solve : XP doesn't recognize files on CD?

Answer»

I was going through some old Cd's I had burnt trying to see what was on them and label. them. I ran across this one that shows it's FULL when calling up properties but when opening it, it shows nothing. I've tried unstoppable copier but it shows no files to recover. I've tried to use a burner program (Nero) and it says when trying to copy that the disk isn't empty. BTW, I did a format on my hard drive and a clean reinstall of XP and don't know for sure which burner program I had used on this Cd I can't read. Any ideas?Sounds like a coaster. A bad burn, or a disk gone bad. Put it in the trash.

I don't think It wasn't a bad burn initially or it would have been erased. I forgot to mention it's a RW.All optical disks degrade over time, whether pressed or burned. You can pay more and get "archive quality" CD-Rs, but even then you can't be sure. Ordinary grade CD-Rs are not permanent. Some just PLAIN don't last. This applies double for RW disks. RW disks degrade quicker than R discs. They are not purposed for long term or archival use. They can become unusable. Sounds like this has happened.

Just Google for "CD longevity" and read some of the articles you find. Here's one http://www.cd-info.com/archiving/degradation/index.html

It's possible the burn in this case was not finalised...

You can use ISOBuster to check...i believe they still have a Trial version... Quote from: patio on February 06, 2012, 11:11:12 AM

Salmon Trout: I realize CDs degrade over time but was thinking it was around 15 years. This disk isn't that old, maybe 10 at the most. I'm sure there are exceptions on the length of time and it may indeed have reached its end. Quote from: The Bubba on February 06, 2012, 11:54:04 AM
Salmon Trout: I realize CDs degrade over time but was thinking it was around 15 years. This disk isn't that old, maybe 10 at the most.

In real-world applications, the elements that affect a disc's shelf life include: the manufacturer's materials and quality of assembly, user handling and storage, compatible hardware and other disc equipment as well as exposure to excess heat, light or humidity. The last 3 can cut disc life down a lot.
My experience with Cd's is that most problems COME from user handling.  There are some cleaners that are designed to clean Cd's.  Before I tossed the CD I would try one of them first.

Solve : Currupt XP or what??

Answer»

Alright. sadly i didn't create the problem or see it happen. My CASE fan has a issue where it gets loud and he hit it and it works. So friday my brother wanted to use my computer and the case fan was loud so he claims he shut the computer off. He tried again soon after and still the same thing. So he hits the case fan a few times and shuts if off and gives up. About a half hour later he claims he started the computer and he gets the following screen which is still poping up. It loads windows XP i get the bars after that blue screen and it says this>

STOP: C0000218 {registy file failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file) :
\systemroot\system32\config/SOFTWARE
or its log alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk: 1.....100

its a Pentium 4 3GHz system that i build. i though it was the RAM (1.5GB i have) and i pulled it out cleaned and back in and still gives me error. At this very moment im running "memory test" from a live CD from linux.... seems to be passing it. Could windows be currupted? how did he do it? he claims he never touched the power bar he shut it off normally. My Technician from work told me to TAKE the hard drive out and make it external drive connect it to windows system and it should fix the error? should i try that? I have a back-up image of the install anyways i just dont wanna use it if i dont have to. thanks in advance. The stop error message is a corrupted registry file, please see this Link.well i formated the drive and tried the back-up like i always do using macruim reflect and now it wont work? it always worked and now nothing. after the back-up is done it just sits at a blank screen after the bios with a flashing cursor??Either the Reflect image is bad or your BROTHERS repeated whapping of the PC has DAMAGED the HDD...

Try a new HDD.

Solve : windows xp is hang up while installing?

Answer»

why thus windows xp is hanging while INSTALLING its begins to hang up after the windows introduction. pls help THANKS a lot!!!!Read this and dry your eyes:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828267
The article is about server 2003 and it t implicates that XP also has this issue
http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic20255.html
That one echos  the MS KB, but NAMES XP as having the issue.

This has been DOCUMENTED by MS in other articles. The workaround is to reduce  tantamount of HARDWARE before the install.

Solve : Need Help with LAN Connectivity?

Answer»

Hey evreyone, i was hoping you all had a few suggestions for my problem.  See i just recently moved into an aprtment with 4 other computers, so that MAKES 5 computers total in the house,  I live the furthest from the router and there for decided to go with the wireless connection so that everyone else could plug into the router, since the router only had 4 ports and had a wireless broadcast.  WEll recently, one of the ports on the back of the router opened up and i decided to plug my computer into it with my ethernet coards and nic card.  So now of course I'm no longer using my wireless connection and have it turned off.  My problem comes when Windows is telling me that it is connected at 100 Mbps, i can see that packets are beign sent out, but i am not recieving any of these packets back.  I've gone into dos, typed ipconfig /release, and ipconfig /renew however, everytiem i do this, it tells me that it cannot renew my ip address because i cannot connect to the DHCP server, and it times out.  So then i decide to manually enter my ip address, default gateway, and dns server info into the computer.  I do this but yet still i cannot access the internet, the only packets are flowing out and not coming back in.  Does anyone have an idea why this is happening and any idea on how to fix it?

JohnDid you respected the subnet mask for your small network? (all computers should have the same subnet mask, only different ip-s). Give US details of IP configuration.
What were your IP settings with wireless? It worked?
It is good the address for Gateway? For DNS?

In Windows xp go to command prompt and type:
ipconfig /all
Tell us what it is written there. This is what i see when i go to the command prompt and type "ipconfig /all".

Windows IP Configuration

    Host Name......................: JohnsPC
    Primary DNS Suffix..........:
    Node Type......................: Hybrid
    IP Routing Enabled.........: No
    WINS Proxy Enabled.......: No

Ethernet Adapter Local AREA Connection

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix.........:
Description............................ ...........: CNET PRO200 PCI Ethernet Adapter
    Physicial Address..............................:00-80-AD-80-58-OC
    DHCP Enabled................................ ...: Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled................: Yes
    Autoconfiguration IP Address............: 169.254.84.152
    Subnet Mask................................... ...: 255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway................................:

Now i know we all need to ahev the same subnet mask and begining IP address, for instance 192.168.1.1XX where x represent ANOTHER digit depending on how many computer we allow on the network.  WE allow up to 50 and our begining IP address set on the router is at 192.168.1.1  And all of my roommates address begin with 192.168.1.10X.  The only exception is mine, exept when I'm on my wireless, then my wirelless ip addy is 192.168.1.105 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0.  Liek i sai dbefore, its GIVING me this weird IP address and weird subnet mask.  Any ideas?

With my wireless connection i worked just fine, but lagged when i was playing games over the internet due to a slwoer speed and less reliabel conenction.  However i did have the correct IP address, and subnet masks.

JohnMy friend, your IP should be 192.168.1.x (x different from any other on the network, for example your x could be 105 if no one else does have it), subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (or the one that is on your friend's computers), default gateway: 192.168.1.1 (the router's IP) and DNS have to be set like your friends DNS (you all have the same DNS server/servers). Your router has a firewall? Maybe is some setting there... some filtering. Your cable, is straight UTP cable (if your network use that type of cable)? Look at the 2 jacks on the ends, the order of wire colours is the same on both? I mean first wire is orange with white -- or orange in stripes, second orange completely, third green with white, fourth blue, fifth blue with white, sixth green, seventh maron with white, eighth maron completely -- this is the standard, but it does no matter that; it matters if both jacks have the same wires in the same positions; if not, you have to buy  a cable (is very cheap) or change a jack to look identical with the other (you have to cut the cable at one end and put another jack, you need a special tool for connecting a jack -- my advise, if you don't know what I am talking about buy one from a shop -- you have to tell to the seller the length of the cable you need and the type of cable, which ussually is UTP cat 5E or cat 5).

Tell us more after you check these. Also, you can check the cable with one of the friends computers. Connect the cable to the router, go with it to your friends computer and replace their cable. See if their computer works fine with your cable (receives the right IP settings); if it doesn't, than the solution is what I told you before. If the computer receives the correct data, than the problem might be on router or your computer (network card faulty?)

Solve : computer keeps cycling on starting.?

Answer»

Dell 9200, windows XP operating system normal updates, on start up normal screen comes up, then Dell XP 061, BIOS 2.5.3 with loading bar gets to end of bar then returns to start up screen. keeps repeating cycle. no beeps at all. cant check light codes at moment as running diagnostics... "express diagnostic test" ok, "cannot boot OS diagnostic test" running now and so far ok..... complete noobie, any suggestions. only thing on computer of concern is family photos, if NOTHING else would like to be able to get them.1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Can you boot to safe mode?as far as can tell nothing... except son was playing on a game (don't know which) when told to exit it wouldnt on screen (X) so I think he turned it off at box, when restarted has been doing this.
not installed or uninstalled anything new. no recent error messages.
can't get any screen beyond BIOS screen.

Mr. EBoot to the XP CD. Choose the first repair option, which will take you to the Recovery Console. Once there, run chkdsk /r. Let's see if that helps. If not, we can try a repair install.got disc, will try once diagnostic completed, on last bit now but estimated time 1 hour.Take your time, this forum is always open ok afew things...
all diagnostics checked out fine (just took hours).
tried restarting again, same problem, went to boot device menu CD-ROM "selected device not available".
tried changing order in set - up menu, no different.
disc goes round and green light on (flashing) to start then goes off.
also have lights 1,2 and 3 on steady (in main they seem to change rapidly with the start up sequence but have never been steadily on).
will check connections in stack.
ok out of depth in box, wouldnt know if something not connected at all and should be but all connections that are in place wiggled and seem good. Quote from: Mr. E on February 12, 2012, 05:05:24 AM

tried restarting again, same problem, went to boot device menu CD-ROM "selected device not available".

I don't understand what that means. Are you saying that the bios would not allow you to move the cd to the top of the boot order or are you saying that after you did, you could not boot to it. Please try to be clear in your explanation. Your post above says a lot, but little of it is clear - at least not to me.made some progress.
disc is in, recognises CD, loads then gives me a CHOICE:
set up windows XP now,
to repair a windows XP installation using recovery console
or quit.
pick recovery
get:

1: K:\minint
which windows installation would you like to log onto

at this point only seems to accept single letters or numbers...
tried 1 and Minint comes up again, only command I can get to work is chkdsk (but without the run or /r) which says volume appears in good condition and was not checked Use +p if want to check the volume anyway.
trying various permutations but MOSTLY says command not recognised.

got it,
4086 bytes in each allocation, 1214546 total allocation units on disc,
137918 allocation units available.k:\minit is your recovery PARTITION as setup by Dell. It appears the system does not see your system partition. This could be because the master boot record is damaged, the hd is damaged, or you somehow deleted / formatted the system partition. I'd start by going to the website of your hd manufacturer and downloading their diagnostic utility. Burn it to cd and run it.

After that (or alternatively) you can try a repair install if necessary. Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on top of itself. After completion you'll need to go to Windows Update and download & install all updates (except for hardware & driver related updates, which should never be downloaded from Windows Update - only from the OEM websites). Here is a clear tutorial on how to perform a repair install: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/
thanks... that don't sound so good but looks like diagnosis correct, following the tutorial, gives me a series of PARTITIONS but no repair option, doesn't seem to recognise it anywhere. so it seeems I can set up XP to be installed on one partition, c has the largest space, but I gather that all data in that partition will be lost... does that mean bye bye photos?
alternatives are I (back-up) and K but don't know what else would be there so difficult to guess what will be lost.
there is a choice to create a partition could that help?C: is typically your system partition and that would be where the OS is currently installed (and where you'd want to reinstall, should it come to that). If you want to try to recover your photos before doing anything else, you can slave the drive to another system and see if you can access them in that manner. After that, you can run the hd diagnostics and see if the hd is good or needs to be replaced. Quote
bye bye photos?
Try using  Puppy Linux to recover files from your drive. You would need a working computer with a CD drive to burn the ISO file.thanks guys, getting to the limits of my capabilities. am working through the puppy linux suggestion but suspect that will end up getting cold feet and taking it to a professional before I do anything irretrivable.

many thanks. got further than I thought I could / would.tried the puppy linux route to recovery, loaded fine from CD but no file on compter readable, guess that means hard drive is fritzed ?!!

thanks.

Solve : I cant send email out, but I recieve it!!?

Answer»

Iam unable to send any email out using Outlook Express, but I am getting all emails sent to me. Recently I signed up for free email and Instant Messaging with Yahoo, but when I was prompted to make Yahoo my default email I declined. When  I try to send an email out I get a MESSAGE that says "A time out occured while communicating with the server. Subject " (   )" Account " (my email account)" Server"SMTP.cebridge.net"Protocol: SMPT, Port:25, Secure [SSL]:NO, Error no. 0x800CCC19
I contacted the tech support for the cable internet service I subscribe to but all I was told was that the error number that I'm getting is so common that they doesnt know what is wrong!!! Ihave done several scans with my antivirus and I have also checked for ad/spyware. I am the only one who uses this computer so I know that the settings in Outlook Express have not been changed. I am at a loss as what to do next. I am no where near a computer expert, Im really new to using a computer so I really dont know what else to do. Thank you for any and all help!!!shantiel.......It sounds like something is amuck with the way your mail account is set up ......I assume it was working ok before the Yahoo thing ......If you are using the yahoo instant messaging ......your outlook settings may have been comprimised .....I would do this ......go to your outlook express inbox ....click on Tools /Accounts......now select the mail tab  ........click properties and check all the settings ......if necessary delete the default mail account thats there now and ADD
a new one ..( you may have to phone your service provider to confirm all the settings that are there now .)

The settings that may be suspect would be .......click the SERVERS tab .....look at Outgoing Mail [SMTP]
Advanced tab...... Server Port number [probably 25 ]

let us know how you make out .

dl65  Give this a shot... Click Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. Click on System Restore.... Look where the dot is, and make sure that "Restore my hard disk to an eralier time" is selected. Click Next. Now, you will see a calendar... Click on the day BEFORE this problem happened, and select a time on that date. Make sure that the correct date/time is selcted, and click next. After just click ok. Now, your computer will restart, and your hard disk will revert itself to the day BEFORE, when everything was ok. Now, this might take a little while, so have patience! Let us know what happens!

[glb]Flame[/glb]Sorry it took so long for me to reply but I've been working w/ the ISP's tech support on this too. So let me get you caught up on what has gone on with this. I checked and all of my Outlook Express accounts are correct and by the way the server port is 25. Is this okay?  I reset all my IE settings to default, the settings that came w/ the computer, which were all MSN. The tech support suggested this incase the problems are  due to Yahoo. I downloaded Microsoft Antispyware and did a full scan and removed everything it found. I couldn't do a system restore because I was advised by the tech support to turn off the system restore temporarily while I ran antivirus and ad/spyware scans so that it my computer could be "properly" scanned. I was also advised by tech support to turn off the outbound email scanning on my firewall and antivirus. Well, sadly none of this has helped, in fact the problem is worse because now I cant receive email either. Now I'm getting a message that says "  An error has occured. Account: '(.......),Server: 'smtp.cebridge.net' Protocol: SMTP, Server response: 421 cannot connect to SMPT server 24.206.159.131 [24.206.159.131.25] Connect error 10060, port 25 Secure [SSL]: No, Server error 421, Error number 0x800CCC19 ". I did online scans at different av sites incase they found something my av missed but My computer is clean of viruses and ad/spyware so I dont know what to do next. Also now my computer is freezing up, SOMETIMES for extended periods of time.  :'(I am really stuck as what to do next, so if you have any more suggestions they would be greatly appreciated! The tech support said they were experiencing technical difficulties with the email service and this is why I'm getting this new error. I dont think that is the case with me because my friend uses the same internet service provider and shes having no TROUBLE sending /receiving email.

Solve : File dragging not working?

Answer» HI there

I have Windows XP SP3, and it works FINE, but the annoying THING is, I cannot drag files from the desktop into another or existing folder, which is also situated on the desktop. If I attempt to do it, the result is nothing.
The only way I can do is to use the copy/paste facility

It was such a handy feature.

I also have an outboard 500GB hard drive (USB) and I USED to be able to drag files and folders from and to the desktop.

But somehow I have lost this capability. Also the copy/paste function is grayed out very frequently, which can be a real nuisance.

I wonder if there is a solution to this.

Regards

BertSounds strange.
First, have you a backup of you stuff?
And do you have a GOOD AV program installed?

Try this. Create a link to the shared folder. You should be able to grade a file on the Desktop and drop it into the link to the shared folder.

Solve : autorun.inf delete fail?

Answer»

I'm having trouble deleting an autorun.inf file from my external hard DRIVE. I've tried removing all attributes through the CL, but when I try to delete it I keep getting the message: "access denied".Have you tried Taking Ownership of the file?   SEE here.

Good luck. Many infections use this LOOPHOLE...what protection apps do you have ? ?I managed to delete the autorun.inf file.

For a long time I've been thinking about running linux on my machine.
Yesterday was the day I burned Ubuntu 11.10 to a cd, because I've been reading that you can run it by booting from the cd to experience the look and feel of Ubuntu. While browsing with Ubuntu's file manager, I thought I'd pay a visist to that nasty autorun.inf file. RIGHT click > Move to trash, and me is happy.

Thanks for your efforts to help me  Best to keep an eye out for it...they're designed to replicate.

Couldn't find any driver updates to begin with.

Why do you bring up the dial-up modem? I don't think I use it anymore. Quote from: Wuai Bel Ree on February 05, 2012, 05:19:54 PM
...Why do you bring up the dial-up modem? I don't think I use it anymore.
I've seen many of them go bad & cause problems. The modem has nothing to do with anything.

What do you mean you couldn't find driver updates to begin with? I was trying to make a catch-all sentence. Guess I didn't do a good job.

I mean I haven't been able to find any new drivers, so I wouldn't be able to rollback or update. I tried a search before I came here for help, but it wasn't fruitful.Go to the ATI website and download and install the most current driver for your video card. That's what I already tried to do, but I couldn't find where to get it.

EDIT: Aha! Finally FOUND it. Thanks for the feedback everyone. Problem solved!

Solve : XP only runs in safe mode?

Answer»

It's me again with this XP lunacy. here;s the history of the problem.

For some long days and even longer nights I've been trying to put together:

MOTHERBOARD
MB ABIT® IC7-G   i875/ICH5-R chipset, Socket 478, 800MHz BUS, ATX format, Intel® P4, audio, Gigbit LAN on board

CPU
Intel P4 - 2.4 GHz

RAM
DDRAM 512MB PC400 APACER® CL2.5

HD
MAXTOR® DiaMaxPLUS®  160GB 8MB CACHE SERIAL ATA

GC
VGA ManLi GeForce FX 5200 128MB TV OUT 8xAGP LITE

BOX
Midi MS® 350W

XP and MAXTOR drivers installation all goes OK, but when I'm trying to start it up the machine freezes (quite early on XP start-up gif thing). First I thought it was because of MAXTOR (larger than 137GB), so I replaced it with my old WD ATI only to get the same result. I tried Win2000 and it worked just fine (barring HD which now pretended to be of 33 GB). I used MAXTOR bootable CD to setup the HD (OK) and reinstalled XP. Of course it got frozen again (very same point). I tried SAFE Mode and it worked! And HD seemed to be OK this time. Now what can be wrong with Normal Mode?
Drivers. One of your hardware drivers makes problems. Can you look in Event Viewer and tell us if it's something wrong there? (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer)
The video card is ok?The cooler is well placed on PROCESSOR? Are parts of motherboard (some chips) that are very-very hot?

Solve : using Mustek scanner with Windows XP?

Answer»

I have a mustek flatbed scanner that I have been using with my old computer which ran windows 98. My NEW computer runs windows XP. When I TRY to install the scanner PROGRAM, the scanner light doesn't go on. Instructions say choose between Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. Does this mean the scanner won't work with my new computer? It sounds like you need XP DRIVERS for your scanner. Go to the Mustek web SITE, find your model and download the appropriate driver.

Solve : Need a Windows Script to rename a file with date . eg aa.txt to aa.12-02-12.txt?

Answer»

Ned windows script to rename a file with dateIf you do this with a batch file the DATE variable is DEPENDENT on your regional and language SETTINGS.  Now there are batch files that can be made independent of the regional settings but it is boat load of extra CODE.  It is a lot easier to just find out how your DATE variable outputs at the CMD prompt.

Open up a CMD prompt and type the following.
Code: [Select]echo %DATE%Please copy and past the output of that command to the forums.RenameMaster fills the bill nicely.  http://www.joejoesoft.com/cms/showpage.php?cid=108I smell SPAM...If you're talking about my post patio, that'll be the day when I spam anyone.  I'm about as clean of an individual that you'll ever run across on the internet or anywhere else.  At age 75, I have no time for spamming anyone nor would I find it amusing.  The software I linked has been thoroughly tested by me and I have used it for years, albeit an older version.

I think more info will be needed...
Are you re-installing IE ? ?

Yes, I'm trying to install IE8 but I can't because of Kernel32.
Windows don't say more than what I wrote in my first post.In Help/About Windows from the file MENU what Win version and service packs are listed ?It's Windows XP Home.
I watched for the SP in System Information but I saw nothing about that. I looked also in the computer's properties and there's no info.
And this computer is pretty outdated, but I can't update it because of Kernel32 and some other unknown bugs .
I think I will need to format and REINSTALL Windows... Maybe  As i suspected you are probab;y missing  Service Packs...which will create this error...
BTW You didn't answer the question....Open Explorer and from the File Menu select Help/About Windows and report BACK with your findings...Additional information can also be found here. Thanks! I will LOOK at that.

Solve : windows won't boot and system32 directory says 0 bytes virus damage possible?

Answer»

i am running xp on a dell desktop and when booting has bsod stop.  i tried to use repair console, but won't accept  correct administrator password.  i tried bart pe to repair and found windows\system32\config has
o bytes.  is there any way to repair this?  any help appreciated     thanksYou can try a repair install. Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on top of itself. After completion you'll need to go to Windows Update and download & install all updates (except for hardware & driver related updates, which should never be downloaded from Windows Update - only from the OEM websites). Here is a clear tutorial on how to perform a repair install: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/

option 2 doesn't work.  when i get to the eula agreement i press f8 to agree and the system locks up and i have to reboot.  where is the reg.bak stored so i can try that route?  i run KEY finder and it list the computer but with no information.  it's a dell with oem windows install so this could be one problem.  i can format the drive to intall a fresh copy, but i need the windows key so i won't have to purchase another os.  any suggestions?  any help would be greatly appreciated.  it's my brother's computer and he won't buy another os.    thanksMore information brings more help.
The exact model number of the dell is needed.
Dell has more models than VANITY Fair Magazine

Was the PC installed with OEM XP by Dell?
In some cases the CD you can purchase from Dell for a reasonable price.
The Dell should have a COA on the back, SIDE or under the chassis. That product key may not work does not work on a retail version of Windows XP.**

You can 'slave' the hard drive to another PC and backup the data to a backup image, if there is enough free space on the spare PC.. Just in case. If you have to install a fresh copy, some data can be recovered from the backup image.

Solve : How can I connect to the internet to a different desktop from the desktop where?

Answer»

I have internet service.  I have been using a wireless router which was used to connect a laptop to the internet.By trying to combine the "subject" of your post and the extremely brief NARRATIVE of your post i think i know your question. So let me see if this is what you are trying to resolve. You have a laptop connected to a modem (assume it is a dsl modem) via a wireless router (which i assume is on the modem end).Though depending on your laptop you might be referring to something attached to the laptop. Most laptops have an internal wi=fi CARD but some may require an external wireless dongle. Now you want to connect a DESKTOP additional computer to the system and be ABLE to use the same modem wirelessly to make the connection. Is that what you are trying to do?truenorth

Solve : Help Fix My Spare Computer? Strange lines?

Answer»

Does anyone know what is wrong with my backup computer?
It is a Dell Inspiron 8400 with XP SP2.  I upgraded it to 1 gig of Kingston RAM, it has the stock 80 gig HD, and everything else is stock.  It does this when I start it up, and system restore does nothing.  Do you think it is the HD, the video CARD, or SOMETHING else?  BTW, it is not the monitor.  I have tested it with 2 different ones.

Did this start immediately after you upgraded the ram?It was about 3 months after.  I TRIED putting the original RAM in, and it still had the lines.Remove all power and remove and re-seat the vid card... Quote from: patio on February 18, 2012, 08:13:08 AM

Remove all power and remove and re-seat the vid card...

I tried, yet they are still there.Okay. It's almost certainly a failing DISPLAY adapter. I SUGGEST you purchase a new one (from a retailer who accepts returns) and let's see where we are.Sure sounds like a failing video card to me. I note that it is a PCI-E card (if original). You could try a look see on the Dell site for a more recent driver if any exists. Here is a link to the manual for that model in case you don't have it.

Solve : How to create self extracting command line command?

Answer»

I have created a manuals package. The package has a main file that everything else is LINKED to. I can create a self extracting exe program from pkzip application. What I don't know how to do is have the program create a shortcut to the main file from this program. If it is not possible to do this with pkzip then what application will do this.
i.e. I want to have SOMETHING SAY
"Would you like to create a shortcut to Manuals or your desktop?" in the or any file extraction application.
Thank you
RJTYou can create a WinScript file (.VBS extension)

Example:

set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
        strDesktop = WshShell.SpecialFolders("Desktop")
        set oShellLink = WshShell.CreateShortcut(strDesktop & "\Shortcut Script.lnk")
        oShellLink.TargetPath = WScript.ScriptFullName
        oShellLink.WindowStyle = 1
        oShellLink.Hotkey = "CTRL+SHIFT+F"
        oShellLink.IconLocation = "notepad.exe, 0"
        oShellLink.Description = "Shortcut Script"
        oShellLink.WorkingDirectory = strDesktop
        oShellLink.Save

You'll have to change the parameters for your own situation. Good Luck!

Solve : Scratch Disk Full?

Answer»

I'm trying to open rather large files in photoshop and I keep getting the message that my I can not open because my scratch disk is full. I don't know what that MEANS or how to fix it. Please give me any helpful feedback you can. Thanks. Please provide us with the following information.... What is your OPERATING system? What version of Photoshop are you using? This information is needed for us to make an accurate diagnosis.

[glb]Flame[/glb]http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/328548.htmlAdobe is set-up so that everytime you execute a command it is stored on the harddrive as a temp file, that means opening, flattening ,anything of that sort. The only way to stop this is to restart the program to clear the scratch disk. The scratch disk is your harddrive.
The problem is that your harddrive seems to be too small. For photoshop 7 a 200 gig hard drive is recommended as a scratch disk.

It is best to have a second harddrive and use it as the scratch disk only. You can assign the scratch disk in OPTIONS. I know it stinks because you loose WORK if you have worked a while without saving.  know how u feel.

Let me know what size harddisk you have.

cadsmarts3I don't have an UNINSTALL for Photoshop 7. It is not listed in CONTROL PANEL/ADD or REMOVE software. How can I remove this program. Your help is greatly needed and appreciatedJamie Lynn.....Whoa , whoa , whoa .....First of all try this reboot your pc ..........when it loads open photoshop and open a jpg.......not huge ...maybe 300-500 kb ....
see if you get the error .
How big is the image your trying to open ?
As far as removing Photoshop......Do you have the install disk ...because PS is a very expensive program.

Solve : Windows not finding my HD.?

Answer»

I have an IDE (master, C:\) and an SATA (should be E:\) hard drive hooked up to this computer. BIOS reads both of them as there, and Device manager acknowledges they're both plugged in and "functioning properly". Windows seems to be acknowledging the existence of the second harddrive, but I'm getting consistent "Delayed Write Failed" Errors for the drive every time I start up my computer. Any ideas?  Have you scanned for Viruses?

Well, I tried that, but when I restarted I still GOT the Delayed Write Error, and now Device Manager doesn't SEE the drive anymore!I'm SORRY that didn't work. I had the same problem when I was running Win2000. You could try this link and see if this will help.

http://www.tangent-systems.com/support/delayedwrite.html

Hope this helps.
Okay, sounds LIKE a good idea... how do I find my system registry file(s)?

Solve : Only an 'Administrator' account will display ALL pictures/graphics on websites -?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a 32 bit 'XP Pro SP3' system running 'IE7', with 1 'Administrator' and 3 'Guest' accounts.

Over the last few days only the 'Administrator' account can view ALL graphics/pictures on webpages - the other accounts can only view SOME. A typical example is the 'Google' logo on its search page. This is displayed perfectly with the 'Administrator' account, but nothing is shown on the other accounts - except the 'UK' part. On other webpages, only the red 'X' placeholder symbol is displayed.

Whenever I set-up a PC I create the required number of user accounts (all 'Administrators'). When ALL applications/peripherals are installed/updated and have been successfully run and configured with ALL accounts, I then restrict the accounts to 'Guest' users - except one which is kept as an 'Administrator'. This account is then only used for maintenance/updating, and not for everyday use or general surfing. This method has served me well and without any problems, over numerous builds for many PEOPLE.

The problem PC is not a recent build and has been running without incident for many months.

My faultfinding so far has been:

1). Check other websites to see if same problem exists.

2). Clearing 'Temporary Internet Files'.

3). Verifying the 'Show Pictures' tick-box is ticked in 'Internet Options-Advanced-Multimedia'.

4). Verifying that 'Scripting, Active X Controls, Cookies' and 'Java' programs are correctly configured and updated.

5). Verifying that image types are supported by 'IE7'.

6). Checked that Internet security, anti-virus and broadband hardware/software is not the cause.

7). Verifying that the 'Auto-Select' encoding option is ticked and the correct encoding language is chosen - Western European (Windows) in this case.

8). CHANGING the restricted user accounts back to 'Administrator'. ALL pictures/graphics are then displayed with no problems, until the accounts are again restricted to 'User' or 'Guest'.

9). Creating new accounts and testing these - ALL with the same result.

10). Deleting one of the current restricted accounts and recreating it, again with the same results.

11). Comparing the settings in 'Internet Options' for the 'Administrator' account with the same settings in the restricted accounts - nothing different.

I knew that some of the above solutions were not going to work because they applied to the PC as a whole, which would have included the perfectly working 'Administrator' account. However, I wanted to ensure that nothing was missed - irrespective of how FRUITLESS the outcome was.

What is it that I am missing. This problem is both intriguing me and 'doing-my-head-in'.

Regards,

Fretful.
I would try updating Internet Explorer to its latest stable release...which is IE8...or try ANOTHER browser.  On that same note...you can also try a System Restore to a point where it was working before. One thing you could try is to download a different browser, firefox or chrome, install as admin, then go back to the accounts that weren't working and try it. After that at least you should know if its IE software problem. Quote from: jrfrye on February 23, 2012, 12:37:13 PM

Redundant...since I already suggested that.  Read my post above yours...

Solve : computer hangs after start up?

Answer»

I am using a desktop computer with the below configuration
MS Windows XP Home SP3
Intel Core2 Duo,CPU [email protected],3.0GB RAM,Intel G45/G43 Express CHIPSET.
Since of late on start up the windows starts normally, but after the desktop icons show, the

computer hangs and is non responsive. The mouse pointer shows in the center with the

(WORKING in background) hour glass which is steady not tumbling. Cannot open any files or

programmes. The items that appear on the bottom right of the task bar also does not show up.

The antivirus soft ware also does not start up. click on the 'start' button has no response.

Ctrl+Alt+Del no response. Also the time display does not change with time. On Using the

reset button which restarts the computer also produces the same situation after the computer

restarts.  There is nothing that can be done for a minimum of 15 minutes.

I have downloaded and run Trend Micro HJT. Below is the log file.

What happens when you try to start in safe mode?truenorthI had a problem recently that sounds like yours. A ROOTKIT had infected my system, and was eating up the cpu power causing hard lagg. The solution I found, after trying a dozen rootkit removal programs, some found it some didnt, but none would get rid of it until I finally used mcafee rootkit removerhttp://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/free-tools/index.aspx
I hope that help's, if not then:
1.Are you able to do anything at all once your in windows or does it freeze permanantly.
2.Do you have access to a second pc that you could put problem HD in to access the files.

Solve : Access Denied - User Accounts?

Answer»

I have 2 computers. Both Windows XP Home. On one computer, I can't get windows to BOOT in safe mode or NORMAL. I want to get some files off of this hard drive before I delete the partition and start over, so I hooked it up as a slave on my other computer.

I try to get into the Documents and Settings\Owner folder and get an "ACCESS Denied" message. I'm assuming this is because of the password PROTECTION for the user account.

Any ideas how to remove this from windows explorer?Take ownership of the folders.
Right Click on the folder/s select properties, select security, click advanced, click on owner, select your user name and select "REPLACE owner on subcontainers and folders", click ok....this should do it.

Solve : system freezing, slow intermittently during and after boot?

Answer»

Hello All,
My computer is very old but has been working fine till recently when the desktop is seen on bootup but am not able to open any icons for a long time, maybe 5-10 minutes. The computer becomes unresponsive when on and off the internet as well intermittently .I have checked the forums but not sure if the same logs would have to be run. Therefore if you could help please.
Have tried to clear startup, without success.
Ran antivirus scan, without any success.
Have installed the latest updates from microsoft.

I see its not a particularly modern system-Pentium D 3 GHz, 512 MB RAM.
You only have 74.07 MB of usable memory by the time your system gets to the desktop... which will easily be taken up by viewing flash media, and the intermittent unresponsiveness of your computer could be caused by the computer caching all its memory to the hard drive's 2 GB page file. If your hard drive is an old 5400 RPM one I can see why it slows to a crawl.

The Event Viewer error is about a printer driver not being loaded because it is ALREADY corrupted.

Use http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner to clean up all your system. I recommend it because it also helps delete orphaned registry entries which will hamper your computer at system boot.

Also, consider adding RAM to your system, which will allow your computer to run more tasks simultaneously. What is the make and model of your computer? (Your manufacturer is "ATI__," which probably refers to an ATi-based chipset. ATi (now AMD) only makes graphics chipsets today.) Your PC may have been a custom-built computer, in that case download http://www.piriform.com/speccy and take a screenshot and post it here. Thanks for that Transfusion.CC cleaner cleared out 301 MB.
I will go ahead and purchase additional  memory.
Yes,the computer is over 6 years old.And yes it was assembled by a third party.

Appreciate any further suggestions.

Thanks again

What antivirus and protection softwares are installed? Did you try running a diagnostic test for the hard drive or Windows error checking tool atleast?http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/diagnose-boot-problems-in-windows-xp-using-msconfig/1191
This may work by selectively isolating programs at boot. Quote from: viking12 on March 01, 2012, 04:47:30 AM

This further CONFIRMS my testing & experience.  Windows XP will no longer function acceptably with 512MB RAM.  1GB is about minimum but have seen 768MB do OK.  I have an old P2-333 laptop with 640MB that I took back to Win2k.  It's a lot faster than WinXP, but still much slower than it used to be.

Solve : Dual-Monitors. Sencon stuck in Vertical.?

Answer»

I have a Dual-Monitor SETUP. The output of my Dell 1005 goes to a second monitor, a LCD TV set with high resolution.
Has been working just fine. Until I tried something.
As unknown, an iPhone o0f smartphone can go either horizontal or vertical orientation.  Actually, Windows XP can  do that to. So I thought I would try the second monitor in the vertical or portrait mode. Works great.

Now here is the problem. I don't KNOW how to get it back. Shacking it does not help. reset does not help. Try another user. Found nit stuck nin vertical mode of another user account.
But if I boot from my 'panic' partition, the one with a bar install of XP, everything is NORMAL. So the hardware did not change. SOMEHOW I changed the display SETTINGS and can not get them back. screenshot attached.

Have you tried the CTRL - ALT arrow or Shift - arrow keys ? ?
Thanks Patio. The keys help go trough the resolutions quickly. But did not solve the problem.
At last I got it back to normal, but I am not sure how.  I went into the area where the chip vendor, Intel, had some custom options no on the normal display options. At one point I got it backwards! The laptop was vertical and the monitor was horizontal! So nI undid that and it went back to laptop normal, monitor vertical.
Finally I just disabled the second display altogether. The later I went in to enable it and all was normal. I have no idea what I did. Hebe is a actual photo of my desk with my laptop and extra monitor. Thankfully In got it back to normal. But I don't know how it happened.

Solve : Are These Speeds The Same??

The same thought initially popped in my head, but for someone who doesn't know what "mbps" is referring to, for all they know it could be a measurement of resistance. Quote from: CBMatt on February 15, 2012, 07:12:11 PM
for someone who doesn't know what "mbps" is referring to, for all they know it could be a measurement of resistance.

They knew they were "speeds". They USED the word "speeds" in the title. Would they not therefore be aware that measures of "speed" are expressed as a quantity per unit of time: miles per hour, feet per second, revolutions per minute, etc? That a speed with a bigger number is faster? Notwithstanding that bits per second is ACTUALLY a rate, not a speed. All I'm saying is that if "mbps" referred to resistance, it would mean that 100 mbps has a significantly higher amount of resistance and therefore would be slow.  And I wasn't suggesting that the OP thought this; it was merely a hypothetical situation.Shoot first, ask questions later... Quote from: CBMatt on February 16, 2012, 01:12:52 AM
All I'm saying is that if "mbps" referred to resistance

But it does not, and the OP knows that, because he asked "Are these speeds the same?". Not "Are these slownesses the same?" (the answer would still be ""No".) And all I am saying is that there must be a zillion squillion gazillion web sites, forums, etc discussing INTERNET or network connections where somebody says e.g. "I have a 5 mbps connection, but I'd like a faster one, like 10 or 20" or other kids at school saying "Your 1 mbps connection sucks, I have 20", or ISP advertisments showing connections with a bigger mbps number costing more per month (now why might that be?), not to mention that in ordinary language "speeds" get faster with increasing numbers, (5 mph is walking pace, 180 mph is a very fast train) so that a reasonably percipient individual would soon realise that a speed with a bigger number is faster.

Salmon Trout, are you suggesting that-
 the 'need for speed'  is
a juvenile dysfunction?

My car is faster that your car. You speedometer only goes to 100. Mine goes to 150. Never mind that yours is in miles and mine is in kilometers. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 17, 2012, 11:41:24 AM

Only you could come with this analogy...
Which is flawed for the reason that both RATES were described with the same measurement... Quote from: Salmon Trout on February 17, 2012, 10:35:35 AM

In fact, in ordinary language, "more speed" actually means the same as "faster".

Like I said, I wasn't referring to the OP in my hypothetical situation.  It doesn't matter that it is incorrect; that is completely beside the point.

Solve : Browser woes...?

Hello,
I tried to network my computer with my wireless LINKSYS system.  This failed and I also now can no longer connect to the Internet with Internet Explorer or Firefox;  HOWEVER, I can connect with AOL.  I know i may have changed a setting on the system. but i cannot figure out what i did .  Any ideas?
DougAre you using DSL?

[GLB]Flame[/glb]yes - I am using DSL and ME...
DougWas the Linksys modem/router that you were trying to install compatible with your computer? Also, how long ago did this happen?

[glb]Flame[/glb]yes - the linksys router is compatible with the computer; we have had no problems with this for nearly two years.  This problem only surface yesterday.
DJNOk.... Follow these instructions.... Click Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. When you click on system restore, you will see a box that asks if you want to revert your hard disk, or create a checkpoint... Click on the button that says revert. After, click next. Now, you will see a calendar.... I want you to click on the day that was 2 days before you ever installed the router. After, click next.... Your computer will give you a confirmation... Just click yes/ok on that.... Your computer will now restart... This process might take a while, so be patient.... Let us know what happens...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Earliest date available was march 2004 but tried it anyway and it failed...
DJNAOL has hijacked your browsers. Call them and they will tell you how to repair it.And if they don't help, tell them you'll go to one of their rivals...

In fact, just do that anyway. AOL is for the sort of people who don't venture further than their front lawn 'just in case'. Since you've SHOWN remarkable common SENSE in using Firefox, I'm presuming that this is not the case.I will try AOL  but thus far they have been no help.  If it wasnt for wife's desire to keep AOL it would have been gone long ago...

Solve : start button comes up to the top on the left side of my monitor screen?

Answer»

I don't know how to lower the start button down to the left side of the monitor screen like it was before. I'll be appreciate for any assistance.Right-click an empty space on the taskbar. If Lock the Taskbar has a CHECK mark next to it, the taskbar is locked. You can unlock it by clicking Lock the Taskbar, which REMOVES the check mark. After just click on the taskbar and DRAG to move it down.Edit: I deleted my initial reply; it was erroneous.  bacskai79 is correct.  You can move the taskbar to the left side, top, right side, or bottom of your screen by dragging it as he explained.   After MOVING it, you should lock it to prevent another ACCIDENTAL move.

Solve : Can I "trade in" my WIN & for a WIN XP somewhere??

Answer»

I got a new computer (HP Pavillion SLIMLINE s5000 series) and it has Windows 7 on it.
I HATE Windows 7!!!        It isn't compatible with miost of the hardware I have, including
my printer.  I'm sick of trying to work around all of these problems.  Is there some way
I can "trade" my WIN 7 is for Win XP somewhere?  FREE!  Is there a way to get WIN XP
off of my old computer and put it on my new one (and delete all of WIN 7)?
ThanksNO!
But you might talk to HP and ask them if there is a solution for you. In general, if you get a Windows n7 PC there is not any kind of 'downgrade' option.

Also, before you even try to put Windows XP on that machine, you need to find out if there are DRIVERS for it. Specifically, the hard drive and graphics may not have suitable XP drivers.

Go to the HP site, enter your model number and see if there are drivers for the machine for XP. The Windows 7 drives do not work for XP.

Tip: If you decide to install XP, do tins: Using Windows 7, shrunk the partition so that you can make a large partition for XP. That way you still have the Windows 7 available if you ever want it.

Trust me! Do NOT erase your Windows 7 OS. You will need it in the future. Really! No joke!I've never understood why people who want to use a decade plus old Operating System buy new computers. To clarify the above points:

A lot of Microsoft's software includes downgrade rights - meaning that (provided the licence specifies,) if you have purchased Windows 7, you are permitted to install XP instead[1].  You may need to phone Microsoft to obtain a valid licence key[2].

Despite my colleague BC's reservations, there are several legitimate  reasons for downgrading to XP.  Of these, the biggest is operating-system lock-in on proprietary or bespoke software.  For example in my company, we use a lot of bespoke software that was developed on and for legacy operating systems.  Upgrading this software is not simple, quick or cheap.  While the process of developing new software was underway it was necessary for us to downgrade a lot of the hardware we bought between (say) 2007 and 2011.

Initially the support burden of Windows 7 was greater than Windows XP, while companies got up to speed on the new O/S.  For smaller companies with limited I.T. budgets, often the pragmatic decision will be to skip one or more versions of Windows and thus avoid some of the obvious and hidden migration costs.

XP is going out of support in 2014, so the pressure is on to move all vulnerable systems away from XP.  Once security updates are no longer available, any network-connected XP machine is essentially a sitting duck.  That said, even this risk may be mitigated by the use of security/endpoint products that keep systems locked down, that still support XP.

Good post. He can order an OEM XP CD specific to his computer from either HP or a on-line site that has the legal rights to resell the HP CD.
As an alternative, he can buy a used OEM CD from an individual that no longer wants it.

OEM in this context means specific to a manufacturer. Neely, HP. Trying to use a HP OEM CD on a PC that does not the COA from Microsoft is a violation of the license. Unless the user wants to shell out the full price for a new license key. In which case he might as well just buy the full retail package.

The OP has already made it clear that he has a HP with Windows 7. As Pomeroy said, he would have the RIGHT to 'downgrade' to Windows XP buy getting the right restore CD from HP. Or a legal source for HP OEM CDs.

The CD is about $25 plus shipping. You can GOOGLE it.

The OP has already made it clear that he has a HP with Windows 7. As Pomeroy said, he would have the right to 'downgrade' to Windows XP

Only certain OEM versions of Windows 7 include downgrade rights - Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate include downgrade rights to Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate. Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate include downgrade rights to Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, or Windows XP x64 Edition. Other OEM Windows 7 versions (for instance, Windows 7 Home Basic and Windows 7 Home Premium) do not include downgrade rights.

I have to say, I used Windows XP in different PCs from 2001 to early 2010, and then I ordered a system with Windows 7 Professional. It is just coming up to 2 years since I started using it, and I would never switch back. When I hear people say how much they hate Windows 7 it reminds me of late 2001 when people were saying how much they hated XP and how Windows 98 was so much better. When I use Xp nowadays, it really feels clunky and late-twentieth-century, and one way I can describe the feeling is that it's like Windows 2000 with a skin.

It would probably be easier as printers are quite cheap. Just get another printer and welcome Windows 7. Quote from: Squashman on February 27, 2012, 03:48:29 PM

Yes, perhaps we can help verify whether a driver is available for Win 7.  If none is available, I'd do as patio said; I'd replace the printer.  If no driver for Win 7 is available for your printer, it must be getting some age on it.

Solve : Help with usb mouse+keyboard (WinXp)?

Answer»

I will try to explain the the best I can.
I have two pc's:
1. Dell optiplex gx620
2. Custom

Pc 1 got a virus that caused the DESKTOP to stop functioning. I didn't have a boot disk or a cd/flash drive to make one and system restore didn't work. So to fix it I did:

1. Removed PC#1's hard drive and hook it up to PC#2
2. WIPE PC#1's HD
3. Clone PC#2's HD to #1
4. Make HD#1 self bootable

The  problem is after replacing HD#1 the usb keyboard and mouse wont work. They work in the bios, and all usb setting are on, so not hardware. I'm assuming that its because HD#2 didn't have the dell drivers on it. The mouse and keyboard still work on PC#2.

I know there has to be a simple solution, I'm just not seeing it.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

The METHOD you used is not the best solution. It may continue to give you problems. Each installation of Windows OS on a PC is specific to the hardware of that computer.

The notable exceptions is when the PCs are twins from the same company. In that case only the OS of one will work in the other.

Sorry, I really don't know what to tell you. Maybe somebody else.
