Solve : Windows XP double install partitions - how to remove C:?

Answer»

Hey everyone, I've been looking around online for some help on a specific issue and I think I can get it here. So, here's the issue.

My computer has a single harddrive with two partitions, C: and H:. A while ago I had a vrius that I couldn't get rid of and didn't have access to any external storage (I still don't), so I didn't reformat. My solution was to isolate the virus on C: by creating a partition (H:). This worked fine and H: has served as my primary drive where I install all programs, use, store and access all files. As far as I can tell, all Wndows processes also come from H:.

To help focus the solutions recommeneded, the startup asking to pick between one of the two installed copies on the harddrive isn't my issue, I've already done the boot.ini edit.

What I want to do is erase the C: partition completely, including every single file on it. Then I want to merge the left over space with H: and have H: continue to function as what is traditionally C:'s function.

Is there a way to do this? Or is C: essential, even if it's not being used for anything?

I really appreciate the help, CH Community. Looking forward to your responses.

Good afternoon toejamtea and welcome to CH

Newer OS's like XP, Vista, Windows 7 none of the mentioned OS do not care what drive letter of the OS is installed on. (i.e C, D, H etc)

Depending on the PC manufacture (i.e Dell, HP etc) may have diagnostic tools in "C" and also have a hidden partition. Considering I do not know the PC manufacture and MODEL of PC I don't know if you should delete or merge the partition(s). My self I have had mixed results using 3rd party tools do do partitions adjustments. Please keep one thing in mind "Have a full back up of all your data first" things can and do go wrong making those adjustments.

When and how did you partition the hard drive to get "C" and "H" in the first place? if you did this by doing a fresh install and told windows during the install to partition the harddrive then well most likely any files on "C" are NG now.

But if you do decide to do anything with the "C" drive why not keep it and use it as a storage area for your files?

Please let us know how you make out and if you have any more questions please come back, Mike           Do not destroy the C: partition.
You are only running Windows XP, Tight?
Are you now virus free?
Does your external  drive now work?
May I suggest that you shrink the C: drive to recover some disk space. And just leave it that way until someday you want to  start from scratch and install Windows all over again.

For future reference. If one is to install another copy of XP on the same hard drive, the new partition should be a primary partition and be flagged as the active partition. This way the boot information will go on the active drive, making it possible to later remove that old partition, if desired.

hartbeatmr:

Do you mean newer OS's don't care about the drive letter? The double negative is throwing me off - "none of them don't care". I'm guessing you do mean they don't care.

My computer stats:
Sony VGC-RB50 - Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz (2 CPUs) - 1534MB RAM
Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600)
Note: This is from dxdiag. Under My Computer - Properties, it says my OS is Windows Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

I did the partition about 1 year ago. I used a Windows XP Professional CD to create a partition containing a fresh install on H:. This allowed me to access C: for the files I knew weren't infected and move them to H:. It also let me finally remove the infected files since no processes were running through C: to recreate the virus as it was deleted.

I'd rather get rid of C: entirely. Using EaseUs and Unlocker, I've erased all visible files (this includes normal hidden files, but not the "super" hidden files that Windows keeps) and reduced the size of C: to just over 1 gig. See below:

http://i.imgur.com/sDsln.jpg

There are no files visible, even with Hidden files shown, in C:. So, it's the "super" hidden files below:

http://i.imgur.com/UY232.jpg

As you can see, they exist on both C: and H:. As far as I can tell, this is all that exists on C:. If H: is running all processes, then I should be able to safely delete these files from C:, right?

In reference to the first picture, EaseUS has the partitions labeled as System and Boot. Given this, the option to format or delete either one is unavailable, nor can I merge the two.

Given that all necessary files to run the computer exist on H:, then is there a way to change C: out of "System" status? I'm thinking this maybe something I need to do through BIOS, telling it to not only boot H:, but to do evreything from H:, but I'm not sure about this.

Thanks so much, Mike. Hope you can continue to help!

Geek-9pm:
Yes, I'm running only Windows XP and I am virus free. I've never had an external drive. I followed your advice and shrunk down C:. If you read above, you know what I've done.

So, you're saying that since everything seems to run from H:, I should be able to delete C:? I tried formating by right-clicking on the drive in My Computer, but it said it couldn't do it. As EaseUS shows, C: is listed as System status. Any ideas for how to remove this and make it a status that can be deleted or merged with H:?

Thanks Geek-9pm.The boot.ini must be on the 1st partition.  I suspect the one you have edited is on "H", which is not the 1st partition.  Are you sure you have not edited the "C" boot.ini?  Your "C" still shows as a System partition.Personally i would do a wipe and a clean install after backing up any important data...but that's just me...I would image the whole drive & restore the appropriate partition after wiping the drive.  If it works, it saves a lot of time & frustration.patio:
Yeah, that's definitely the quickest and easiest solution, but it's not one I can do since I don't have any external drives.

Computer_Commando:
Is there a way to tell which boot.ini I edited? They both say the same thing. When I edited it, I did it through right-clicking on My Computer which is located on the desktop of the H: partition. Does this mean I edited the H: boot.ini?

Any idea how to remove the System status from C: and give it to H:? Quote

In reference to the first picture, EaseUS has the partitions labeled as System and Boot. Given this, the option to format or delete either one is unavailable, nor can I merge the two.
The above means  can not remove the C: dive and boot the machine.
If you have a 80GB or more of hard drive, having just 1 GB lost is not a big deal.
Because you do not have a proven backup plan, it is not wise to go any further with this issue.
As patio said, you can backup, do a clean install, and restore from the backup.
You can run Chkdsk on the C: drive, then tun Defrag, and then reduce the C:n to about 500 MB or less. The C: has the non-visible boot loader files. If you make H: the active partition and put the loader on it, the drive becomes C: and some programs will not run properly because they were installed when H: had the program files directory and the Windowsl32 stuff.
Yes, there is a workaround, but is is not fully automatic. It is EASIER to just leaven it the way it is.
Also, it you have enough drive space, you could make the C: drive about 3 to 5 GB and have enough room for a 'spare' install of XP in case of a future  virus attack. That is what I have. And it does help to find tough virus infections. I boot into the clean install and run AV programs to disinfect the main system I normally use. Does this int erst you?Hey everyone, thanks for all your help! It's been greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, as you all pointed out, the endeavor wasn't really worth it. I decided to change focus entirely and upgraded to Windows 7. I was able to save my files by taking an old harddrive and plugging it into my mobo. I wasn't sure if it would work, I thought it may even damage something, but nope. It worked fine and I was able to have one single drive with no partitions like I wanted.

By the way, considering upgrading to 7? Don't. It's hardly an exaggeration to say that most of 7 is unable to be customized. Just to name a few, you can't customize the start menu, taskbar, or change MIDI output. "Apply to All Folders" is gone and you have to customize 5 "types" of folders to get all folders using one layout and browse windows keep the layout of the viewed folder rather than defaulting to the List view like XP did. All in all it feels more restricting and therefore is an upgrade only because it's newer. What I find really disturbing is that Microsoft is obviously fully aware of how much of a pain 7 is. They created an "XP Mode" which makes 7 look and run like XP. This sounds great at first, but you can only get the feature if you pay for the most expensive version. This is one of the most disgusting and greedy marketing tactics I've ever seen. You may think this viewpoint is cynical, but if XP mode was some kind of altruistic gesture to apologize to the Windows consumer community for how terrible 7 is, then they'd have made it available for ALL versions of 7. Whoever made the decision is hurting Microsoft in the long-term. It's things like this that will push people AWAY from Microsoft and therefore cost them profit and eventually the entire company. Am I being pessimistic? Hardly. Doing a quick google you can see Mac sales started to rise shortly after Vista came out. 7 isn't that different from Vista, so I'm not sure what they expected would happen with 7. The inevitable result of their actions will be the continued loss of profit to Mac and other platforms. But hey, at least I can use DirectX 11 now.

TL;DR: 7 is terrible. Microsoft is suicidal.

Anyway, enough rant.  Thanks again everyone for taking the time to help me.How well does Win7-32bit run on your 1.5GB RAM?  Minimum required is 1GB.As far as speed is concerned, it's great. No COMPLAINTS there. Startup to login screen isn't noticeably different than XP. From login to desktop it's faster as there's no wait once I see the desktop. XP took a few seconds longer to load the same startup programs and be responsive to any input.BTW i dis-agree with the Win7 rant...however ...carry on. So do I.

An interesting allegation...

Quote
you can't customize the start menu
In what way exactly do you want to customize it? The "Customize Start Menu" dialog is pretty encompassing, with the exception of people that seem to think it's important to be able to change things like the start orb bitmap, because it's "easy to do with Linux desktops" which is a bit of a curious way of describing the multiple configuration files and terminal commands you will inevitably need to use.

Quote
taskbar
Again, in what way is it not customizable? I mean, sure, you can't do things like make it so every notepad taskbar button is hot pink, but the "Taskbar and Start Menu" dialog has quite a bit.

Quote
or change MIDI output.
Yes and no. It seems they removed the MIDI mapper since that was originally part of the Media Extensions for Windows 3.0. MIDI output options need to be set and used by the application now.

The old method let you say "OK, if a program doesn't say to use a specific MIDI output device, use this one" (thus the name MIDI mapper). Now the programs have to explicitly choose a MIDI device. This only really affects programs that are outdated or simply bad in some respect, since most applications (such as FLStudio or other music composition programs) at the very least allow some method of changing the output device, same for MIDI playback in programs like Winamp.

If you want to change the default from the Roland WaveTable Synth (which IMO isn't terrible and certainly beats the FM synth of my OPL-3) you can use something like Vista MIDI patch.

Quote

Not sure I understand. I recently reinstalled Win7 on this laptop and I only remember changing my view setting once, and setting Apply to All Folders. (Which is still present in Folder Options).

Quote

This is patently false, First, they made XP mode to help when applications are written by people with the IQ of a headless chicken and don't work properly on Windows 7 because some doofus decided that they would ignore the API documentation because, even though they wrote it "wrong" it worked so hey release it right? Additionally, it in no way makes Windows 7 look and run like XP, instead it runs a XP virtual machine; this is specifically for running applications as noted above. it's particularly useful for those poor web developers that still need to support IE6... which is actually the only use case I can really think up, with the exception of if you really need to run badly written programs, though I would argue that if a program doesn't work properly on 7 at this point it might be a good idea to consider alternatives.

Quote
This sounds great at first, but you can only get the feature if you pay for the most expensive version.
I have ultimate myself but I've never really found a use for XP mode. Actually I'm reluctant to admit I've never even gotten it working properly.

Quote

XP Mode is designed to address the backward compatibility ISSUES introduced when Many of the windows capabilities and features change internally. I believe I've gone through this before, but essentially a program that is written properly might work just by chance in XP (or an earlier version of Windows). that product sells. People buy it- they use it. All is well. But that code that is written wrong is a ticking time bomb. By wrong, I mean- let's say a Function parameter says that certain arguments are not allowed. Some earlier versions might have less strict checking, so applications might be calling them with those arguments and getting values, that are either wrong or coincidentally can be used by the program. When a new version of windows comes around, the internal implementation of said functions might change but the external interface (how it's called) remains the same, and Applications that relied on that behaviour no longer work properly. Some other applications hard-code values that they found to work- for example,  a lot of applications directly view the left and right mouse buttons but never take into account whether the buttons are swapped.

So the application breaks when somebody upgrades windows. Who is to blame? IMO the people with the cognitive capacity of a dead skunk and the management stylings of a constipated gorilla that wrote the program, but most people just see that they upgrade to windows and now a program doesn't work. The problem is that the app maker is either out of business, or, if they are in business, don't give a crap. "we released that version over 5 years ago, if they want Windows Vista capability, they should upgrade to version 2010!", is what a tech rep might tell you. Of course this leads to ridiculous conspiracy theories where MS is "funneling" money to those application vendors by breaking them, but the truth is that the applications aren't written properly to begin with. And are like rube goldberg devices waiting for MS to change some inner detail of how the OS works. that no application should depend on, at which point they break.

Quote
It's things like this that will push people away from Microsoft
yeah, sure they will have the choice then between the even worse compatibility record and price point of Apple, or the "we may be ten years behind but this year is going to somehow be different" attitude you get with Linux, which is harkened as some be-all -end all customizable OS, which it is, if you don't mind forking C source and writing that "customization" yourself, or editing deeply hidden config files.

Quote
Am I being pessimistic? Hardly.
No- that's being pretty stupid.

Quote
Doing a quick google you can see Mac sales started to rise shortly after Vista came out.
this is meaningless. It's like if you saw that Orange sales rose after a hurricane. That doesn't mean the hurricane caused the Orange sales to rise.

Quote
isn't that different from Vista
This is probably the only thing I agree with, which is why I don't think Vista is as bad as people claim it to be. First off it finally adds composited hardware and 3d acceleration to the desktop, which helps prevent GPUs with 10 super tiga flooples of processing power or whatever from sitting there and drawing a few boxes most of the time; the rearchitected Sound subsystem that redesigned something that was 20 years old (and of course had to shake off 20 years of dust to do so), and the improved security subsystem using token stripping.

XP by comparison is not only old, but it's also rather ugly, equally uncustomizable (unless you count toggling to and from classic start menu), less secure by virtue of being wide open for trojans on a default install (default user is administrator and always has admin permissions and so do any apps they run).

This is probably one of the least informed Vista-related rants I've seen, that isn't to say it's dumb, but it seems to be missing the facts that explain or at least mitigate most of the issues presented. I've seen lots of Vista ones, but somebody has to be really out of touch to do the same for 7. Go ahead and install Linux and see how much 'easier' dealing with MIDI devices is there. Just dealing with Audio can be like wrestling a shaved bear covered in olive oil.

Of course the windows 8 hate will be arriving shortly. The cycle continues...

Solve : Why does laptop black out & will only start after electric discharge??

Answer»

Hello!
I am using an Averatec 7100 series laptop that is running Windows XP. I was using the laptop on Friday when the computer died out of nowhere. I checked to make sure the power source was connected (it was) and I tried to start it by pushing the power button. When that didn't work, I discharged the static electricity by disconnecting the power source, removing the battery, and holding down on the power button for thirty seconds. I then plugged the power cord back in and restarted the computer. Chkdsk ran and said it fixed one problem and the computer started normally and seemed to run better than it had before. So, I put the battery back in and everything was working fine. Until yesterday when the same thing happened again. I once again discharged the electric and it started up again but chkdsk did not run this time.
I am concerned about what is causing this problem and I would like to know if it is something I can FIX or if there is something I need to do to prevent damaging the computer.
Thank you in ADVANCE for your help!
Good morning ambermand WELCOME to CH

#1... Does it seem like the laptop has been running HOT or maybe you have been hearing the fan run and run.

#2... If I remember right on that model shut down the laptop and unplug the ac charger. Now trun the laptop over and look at the back left coner you will see a grid / louvers. Take a tooth pic and put it down thru the grid to the fan and hold it still with the tooth pic and take a can of air and blowing from the bottom out and then when that is clean blow from the side or back grid into the fan until clean.

Here is a picture (not your model)but it will give you an idea of ho to do it.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike For system events, look on to your windows event logs and check on critical marks with details. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427Also, do not use it on a "soft" surface such as a blanket or upholstered furniture. The intake vent is usually on the bottom, and the vent on the side is the outlet. a soft surface prevents adequate airflow. (Normally, on a hard surface such as a tabletop, the TINY rubber feet keep a gap between the bottom of the laptop and the surface, allowing adequate airflow; with a soft surface, it "sinks" in so usually the surface is directly against the intake with no gap.

(My laptop will power off if I use it on a soft surface with high CPU USAGE, but works fine when I put a book beneath it on that same surface)

Anyone know where i can get a Windows XP Home Edition boot disc iso to load on a blank cd? You don't need to burn a Windows disk, as Microsoft helpfully make and sell pressed disks.

Could borrow a friends to repair your own system, or use your original product KEY located on the OUTSIDE of the computer against their installation disk. Anything else is piracy! Quote from: Salmon Trout on August 08, 2012, 01:16:13 PM

No, because Windows install disks are copyright. To create an ISO of a Windows disk and share it via Bit Torrent is illegal. So is downloading it and burning it. Anyhow, Windows disks you get from torrents, besides being illegal, MAY well contain trojans or other malicious code.that stinks! Quote from: geeklygo on August 08, 2012, 01:48:54 PM

If you wrote books or took photographs or created software for a living, I bet you wouldn't like it if people stole them.

You may be able to order a recovery disk from HP/Compaq (They are the same company). Here is the web page

I have a Dell 8200 and have recently f6'd everything from it to START from fresh. Everything works great and REINSTALLED w/no problems, except one. I use a Logitec wireless mouse and when I use the scroll button it jumps in lines instead of smooth scrolling. I checked all the options I could find and they are marked for smooth scrolling. Anybody got any other ideas?batteries good? I used a wireless before and it jumped around so I went back to the regular mouse. no more problems. Does your mouse come with any drivers?Ok, here is what I have done. I tried to update the driver for the cordless mouse, found I was using up to date, replaced batteries, made jerky lines move faster.
I enabled the smooth scroll button, made lines more spread out and faster.
I hooked up and removed after trial, a corded mouse only to have the same situation as with the cordless.
Cordless back on.
Thanks for the replies. Could I be looking at a video problem?right click desktop/properties/performance tab. reduce hardware accelleration. Thanks NEIL, puppie, and 2K dummy for the replies.
When I went in device MANAGER to update the driver for the mouse, I didn't see any monitor showing.

Solve : Port problems?

Trojan Hunter should tell you what program is using that port ....then you can check.

dl65  What version are you using of Trojan Hunter? It should tell you if you can close or not.

Jacko
i am using the trial version 4. it says Port 1130/UDP is open (matches Noknok.800)britfin.....I think you should get the latest updates and then run the scan again
It will tell you exactly which program is or trying to use that port.

dl65 Which port does it say is open?

[glb]Flame[/glb]http://www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo/b/backdoor_noknok_80_a.aspu can try the following
go to http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2
this is a cool website, free, and tells u what ports are open and which one are closed, and which ones that are stealthy.. usually a firewall should HELP u close all ur ports and even make them undetectable by scanners
if u run the "All Service Ports", u can click on the RED LITTLE square which represent ports and u can find out the number and what that port is usually used for.
again firewall makes all ports (usually) stealthy

I want to run SpinRite 6.0

Good evening kleddon and welcome to CH

Let see if we can't help you with your issues.

On some of the older Dell's like your "Dimension 1100" if you start tapping F8 for safe mode or F2 to get into the BIOS or F12 for boot selection (if i remember right if not F12 maybe the esc key) if you do this to early it will not go into the BIOS or safe mode and the PC will just beep every time you press any key while you boot the PC.

Just do this Cold start the PC and look on the screen on the top right for "Press F2 for setup or F12 for for boot" start tapping the keys at that time and not sooner. If you miss it just reboot and try again. Now if you want to go into safe mode when you see the above info just start tapping F8 at that time.

Otherwise maybe the keyboard is on it's way out.  Mike  Thanks I understand what you are saying..it's just that I never see any messages on the screen at all..

My screen remains black for quite a while then all of the sudden I will see the cursor arrow.

the next thing I know I am already booting into windows ...I have tried this several time...

I have worked on several other pcs in the past and I have always seen the notes you are

talking about.. but for some reason I just don't get those messages at all on this pc...

Seemed crazy to me...Hi Again

Do you see a blue bar up top that says Dell? while booting

You may also try hitting the esc key while booting maybe then it will show up and it will get rid of the dell splash screen.

Mike .

EDIT: when you see the dell icon in the middle of the screen and it shows BIOS # start tapping the F2 key then No I do not see a blue bar that says dell...

Like I previously wrote when I turn on the computer...the screen is blank and black...

a cursor arrow will appear...then suddenly the screen is blue and windows is loading...Hello again kleddon

OK when you start the PC do you see anything, like econ logo or Intel logo. I am starting to wonder if the motherboard was changed so that is why you are not seeing The WORD Dell or the round Dell logo with the bios version next to it.

Have you tried the delete key while booting. Most aftermarket boards use the del key.

Mike  No I do not see anything but a black blank screen

then the cursor arrow...

then suddenly screens turns blue and window is booting...

Yes I have tried tapping the delete button, the escape button, F2, F8, F12 at that Point I tried
almost all of the F BUTTONS...

but whenever I do tap on the F buttons the system will not load at all. I have to manually shut the
computer and start again and then I boot to window the regular way...Hello kleddon

Do you have a different keyboard and if not can you barrow one. The stock keyboards for your PC were PS2. I really would try a different one and see if that helps. The odd part is that you see nothing up to the cursor then the typical blue windows screen. I don't think back then dell had a option to disable the splash screen etc.

Have you tried to pull the CMOS battery (for 5 min) and then you should be told that the DATE and time are incorrect etc. and then you can press the key it tells you too?

Mike  Hello again

I just found the motherboard lay out for your desktop.

Just remove the CMOS battery and use the jumper to clear all settings.

If still can't get into the BIOS i really would locate a keyboard and try that one.

Mike It's funny you should ask about the CMOS battery I was just sitting here trying to remember everything
that I have read and then I thought about the CMSO battery and was just going to ask you about that...

I will try that tomorrow...I am really burnt tonight so I thought I would shut down and read a little bit tonight and then go to sleep...so I can get a fresh start tomorrow when I am not so tired..

Hey bro, I really appreciate you taking the time to try and help me tonight...

by the way my name is Kirk..Leddon

It has been great I will catch you if that works tomorrow...Good night!

So Once Again THANKS PAL  ====

=====================================================

You had posted while I was typing so in answer to your reply tomorrow I will
pull the battery and try that out...if that does not work I will just go buy a keyboard...

This keyboard is probably older than the computer is...so it is about due anyway....

Thanks for the schematic but, I do know where the battery is..I did download
the schematic just to have it ..thanks

Kirk

Hello again Kirk

On the pic that I put up it doesn't say CMOS it says "battery socket" (round silver about the size of a nickle) and the CMOS jumper is "J9H1" all you do is pull the jumper (This will be a blue or black plastic) jumper it will cover 2 of the 3 pins and what you do is pull the jumper off where it is and move it 1 pin so it covers the middle and the other end pin.

What you do is shut down the PC and UN-plug the power cord, then open the PC case (Please stand still and don't move while you are doing this until you are done now take your one hand and touch bare metal to drain out any static that you have in your body like on the power supply to ground your self this only takes a sec or two) and look for the CMOS battery & remove it (leave it out for now) move the jumper over 1 pin and leave it there for say 1 min. Then move the jumper back to it's original position and put the CMOS battery back in the way you took it out.

The CMOS battery holder will have 2 black plastic hooks / nubs on one side of the battery a metal spring clip on the other side just push the spring clip away from the battery and the battery will pop up. Take note of what the polarity is + is up or - is up? most are + up.

Now when you boot the PC is should ask you to hit key "?" to enter the setup.

Hope this helps you, Mike

PS you are very welcome that is why we are here is to help FOLKS like your self

Solve : missing dll...please help!?

Answer»

I am computer illiterate and do not know where to begin. I have Windows Xp and recently when I start my computer a box appears to inform me I am missing resource dll-ptsrc.dll. does any one know what this is and how can I correct it in step by step DETAILS .
thankyouTry downloading it here

http://www.dlldump.com/filelistings/a.shtmlTried looking for the ptsrc dll on the given web site but it is not one of the dlls LISTED....any other ideas? and what exactly is this dll used for.
ThanksThe file appears to be associated with Kodak EasyShare software. I don't have a solution for you, but the Kodak support site might.A google SEARCH for dll-ptsrc.dll reveals nothing useful. All I can suggest is reinstalling the software for your camera.

A dll is a dynamic link library which contains instructions that a program FOLLOWS to perform its task, simply put. (I think)I don't use the Kodak Easy share progam at all ...I know it is installed on the pc. I do have a web cam...i am assuming it isn't related to that. Can I delete the whole file re: Kodak?
Thankyou for all your inputParaphrase
> can I delete the Kodak stuff ?

Well, be sure, very sure, no-one uses this Kodak system.  Then do not delete it - uninstall it and if asked to delete any DLL files probably it is best to say NO as you cannot be sure what they are used for.

Uninstall via CONTROL Panel and Add/Remove Programs.
Amanda Maxwell.....It is associated with a Kodak program you must have installed on your pc.......If you dont use it , you may wish to remove it .....
http://forums.pcmag.co.uk/thread.jsp?forum=14&thread=9354

Hope this helps .

dl65  I have a lot of dll missing problems, so this is what I do.  I simply re-install the program requring the dll, and then I uninstall again. This usually fixes the problem.

Jacko

Thank you for all your help...I removed the progam and it has cleared up.

Good afternoon ToUtSi and welcome back to CH

Thank you for the one mini dump but with not supplying any of the PC's information / specs I can't give you a link but the "0x1000008e" usually points to a bad driver or the PC NEEDS the BIOS to be updated. ***I would not update the BIOS yet and should only be done as a last resort***

First go to the PC manufactures web site and update all your drivers starting with the Chipset drivers first then do the Video card drivers, NIC card, sound card drivers.

I Also would go to your camera's web site and update the drivers and software for it.

Please let us know how you make out. Mike While CONNECTING camera explorer.exe fall down you know i see only the wallpaper and windows bar and icons make a "restart" i check memory stick and when change fast IMAGES camera fall down too :/
maybe blue screen is not from camera is something random from explorer.exe"fall down" ? ?If you open tasks (ctrl+alt+delete) and go to explorer.exe and stop it you will see only the wallpaer of pc and you must to restart to come back icons and bar  right ?
when i connect camera ot does the same but icons and windows bar come back after some seconds

Solve : dissabling IP messanges?

Answer»

Hey All,
I am using windows XP but I think some of the problem I am having has to do with DOS.  I am getting popups continually even when I am not using a browser.  I have already used Ad-Aware to scan and Spybot to scan.  I am pretty sure it isn't anything on my pc.  someone told me though, that people can message your computer using DOS and your IP address.  I use this feature constantly.  I use it through the net send command in DOS prompt.  The only thing I don't get is how people can be sending HTML through this.  And if I have to EXEPT that there is a way to do this, I'm just not smart enough to completely understand it, I'm fine with that.  I at LEAST want to know how to dissable the IP messanging though so other people will not be ABLE to communicate with me through my IP address.  sure, I will miss talking to other computers on my LAN with this NEAT feature but if it stops my popup problems, I can make the sacrifice.
thanksmuch for any help anyone can give me

P.S.  In the time it took me to write this message, around five minutes, I have recieved four popups.Hi, do you have MS firewall enabled? Or any other firewall? (Remember: only one software firewall per computer)
They should stop unsolicited inbound requests to messenger.
www.grc.com has a program to disable this called 'Kill the Messenger' or probably 'Shoot the Messenger'
I'm sure that if you search Google you will find plenty of info on how to secure your machine.

Solve : Hellp with error code and dr watson?

Hi, i need some help with my computer which is a Compaq Presario 6027US running Windows Xp Home Edition. I received this computer about 2 weeks ago from a cousin and he doesn't have any of the recovery discs. However i do have a windows xp home recovery disc.
When i turn on my computer, it boots up all the way to the Windows SPLASH screen and then the screen goes black with a mouse cursor on it. it does the same thing in all safe modes. I get the following error code when i disable automatic restart- STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The windows LOGON process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000) The system has been shut down.  I've ran chkdsk /r but no luck.
I've also tried using Dr.Watson and i can't access it from recovery mode. Please Help, ThanksSince you just received the system I'm guessing there's nothing on it you need to save. Format and reinstall the OS.i would rather not do that because my cousin had all games and important files on there, that i want to KEEP.  Plus i don't have a windows xp home disc, i only have a windows xp home recovery disc. The information patio /quaxo / Allan are giving you the information for us to help you.

Maybe these steps might help you. If the HP factory restore partition is functional and in place. If your cousin never made a set of recovery disks you can make them your self here are the steps from HP to make them http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=94088&lang=en&docname=bph08097 you will need blank CD or DVD's to make them. These discs can be used in-case of OS corruption or harddrive replacement. These discs have ALL software / drivers etc that came with the PC out of the factory. Ruffly 3-4 DVD's and 6-8 CD to make them.

Solve : My Mic doesn't pick up sound any more?

Answer»
My mic had always worked great with recording and STUFF unitl one day when I DECIDED to plug my guitar and amp into the computer.  The noise was way too loud so I got my friend to make it so that the sound would be LESS harsh.  It worked REALLY good for my guitar, but when i pluged my normal mic back into the computer, the mic would pick up any sound.  So I was wondering if someone would be able to tell me how I can make my mic pick up normal sounds again.  :-/
uh... The MICROPHONE should plug in to a different jack than the line-out from your guitar and amp. Open the Record mixer (open Volume Control and select Options, Properties, Recording) and check the Select box for your microphone instead of the Line In box.

If you jammed the axe wire in the microphone jack, you'll have to fiddle with the volume setting and Advanced Controls properties to get your microphone settings back to where they're supposed to be.Find the mic in the device manager, right-click on it, and click update drivers. (Make sure that you are connected to the internet before doing this)

When XP home edition was installed , printer and speakers went off automatically upon computer shutdown. After a reinstallation they no longer do, but have to be turned off manually. What's the solution?   Tks.  :Claire Gardinier.....Usually the printer and the speakers.....are powered from an OUTSIDE scource. There is a LOW voltage power supply which is probably plugged into a power bar....It is normal , if the speakers and the printer are both turned on ....that when the pc is shut down normally , you would have to manually TURN off the power button on the speakers as well as the power button on the printer......
If you had a large ENOUGH capacity aux. power outlet on the rear of your pc......which would handle all your periphials then one could plug the power bar into that and then plug all the periphials in .......When the pc was shut down all would be shut down ......

hope this helps

dl65  The printer may have an ACPI extension that you would have to set in your printer properties to respond to the PC being shut off.

You can control speakers by adding a 12V relay box aith a plug and outlet. When the 12V is on it would close the relay contact and power the speakers... But from your description htey may also have an ACPI feature. Look at the audio device properties...

Solve : Windows wont continue startup normally?

Answer»

This morning, I seemed to have visited an unsavory site, or something, as it put a virus on my computer.  I thought my anti-virus was running, but apparently not/it wasn't updated.  (I'm using ETrust Antivirus, by the way)  But anyways.   First it gave me a ton of spyware, which I tried to get rid of with adaware and spybot, which got rid of some, but my start page in internet explorer would change to the same thing everytime, and also I would be doing something in a window and it would just randomly close, or switch to some AD, and then immediately close.   I RAN AdAware, Spybot, and Etrust antivirus.   Got rid of all the spyware, Etrust came up with a virus named "counter.cab" which I got rid of.

I left for a while, came back, restarted my computer and it wouldn't go.  It would get to the Welcome SCREEN, and then load the desktop picture, and wouldn't do anything else.   It will work when I put it into safe mode, which is what I'm in now (safe mode with networking) and I have ran my antivirus program, and there are no viruses present, just a bunch of files with "Open Error".  I did an internet search on this, and it didn't seem to be like a BIG deal, but maybe it is.  This is the only cause I can see why it wouldnt' be working, but maybe you guys can help me out.

So basically, my computer wont start in normal mode, it will load the desktop picture and wont do anything else, but I can run it in Safe mode.  What should I do?Hi,

Try this first, if you don't already have RegClean, go to CNET.com to download it, it's free. Once you downloaded it and install it, run RegClean to clean up the register. What RegClean does is to sort out all junks and wipe it out.

Solve : Windows XP file extension association?

Answer»

In the midst of trying to change a file extension, I've run into a problem I can't fix.  I did get the file extension changed from TXT to exe (this turned out to be pretty simple, but after the damage was done), but now my problem is that I can no longer open most files from my desktop, such as calculator, Norton Anitvirus, palm desktop, adobe, etc and they all have the exe extension now.  It's basically double click and nothing happens.  I know I did something in the folder options to make all this happen, like trying to create a new extension (exe) in file types, which I deleted right afterward.  Not sure what to do.Have you tried restoring your OS to an ealier time before you changed the extensions?
This may sound SILLY but I assume it isn't the shortcuts on your desktop which you've changed to .exe files because these aren't programs, they are just ...shortcuts, which would explain why nothing happens when you click on them.  SORRY if I'm insulting your intelligence by this suggestion, but I've seen stranger things done. You managed to crunch the entry for EXE in your registry. Best bet is to use System Recovery to go to the last save point before you snagged it, ASSUMING you use XP, or boot to DOS in Win9x and run

scanreg /fix

or

scanreg /restore

So I tried the reboot, f8, last good config and that didn't change things.  I still cannot use an EXECUTABLE file.  Any other ways to do system restore than through the startup menu?Does it affect all exe or just on the desktop? Try to load an exe program using start > run. if it works that way then it probably means your computer has the exe extention set up incorrectly. It's affecting all exe, I tried the start/run and I get a pop up that says windows cannot open this file, etc

How do I set up the exe extension correctly?http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=814510  read more just in case...Go in folder options and look at file types. Search for application.Problem sovled!  I used this website to fix my broken EXE association http://filext.com/info/showthread.php?t=12

Solve : Multiple and Frequent Blue Screens Including in Safe Mode?

Answer»

Hello,

Out of the blue (no pun intended), I began receiving blue screens on my Windows XP desktop; these also occur when I boot to safe mode.  They occur anywhere immediately following the boot to Windows or within about 20 minutes after Windows had booted.  The blue screens provide a variety of error messages, which I've listed below:

IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal
Page_Fault_in_Nonpaged_Area
Bad_Pool_Header

Also, occasionally, I'll get a BSOD without any error messages - just a reference to the memory address or whatever that is.

There were not any hardware or software changes that preceded these blue screens.  SINCE I started receiving them, I've confirmed my BIOS is up to date (it was), upgraded my chipset and onboard audio drivers, updated my video drivers to the latest version, ensured all Windows updates had been downloaded and installed (they had).  Additionally, I have confirmed I have the latest versions of all other drivers.  I have reset my BIOS values to the fail-safe values and I have never overclocked my PC.  Additionally, I routinely run virus and malware scans with the latest definitions and those both come up clean.

Googling these error messages, many suggest looking at the RAM.  I have two 1 GB STICKS, so I've tried removing one of them, switching the slots they're in and moving them both from the first and third slot to the second and fourth slot; in all scenarios, the blue screens continue.  I will note that the sticks are EXTREMELY warm when I remove or reseat them, but I don't know if that's normal or not.

I've also seen references that these errors can be caused by the CPU overheating; I suppose that's possible, but for what it's worth, right after the bluescreens occur, per my BIOS, the CPU and motherboard temperatures are both in the 40-45 degrees C range; those don't strike me as excessively hot.

The one thing that appears to turn up SOMETHING fishy is when I run Memtest off a boot CD.  Regardless of whether I'm using one stick of RAM, both sticks or the slots they're in, immediately, errors start popping up literally by the tens to hundreds of thousands.  However, the test usually stops or locks up after no more than ~ten minutes.  That would certainly indicate a problem with either my RAM or the slots on my motherboard they go in, but I'm unsure how to determine which is the problem.  Unfortunately, I do not have any other compatible RAM I know is good that I could swap in there.

My hardware, which I purchased in 2008 and have not had a need to upgrade since, is as follows:

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB
2 x 1GB Crucial Ballistix 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit RAM
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
XFX GeForce 9800GT 512 MB

Any help would GREATLY be appreciated.  If you have any questions that would help you diagnose the problem(s), please feel free to ask.  THANK you in advance for your help.I've already responded to you on a different forum. Your problem is clearly ram or the motherboard. REPLACE the ram (purchase it from a retailer who accepts returns). If the problem continues after you replace the ram, it's your mobo. But more like than not it's the ram.Thank you, Allan, and sorry for the double (site) post.  I didn't realize you frequented both forums. No problem. He's a multi-tasker from way back....

OK from hat I am interpreting in your post(s)

#1.. you installed 2 different OS (XP and W7) and you are saying the PC is no better / faster. You may have a HARDWARE issue, is there any yellow or red items on the device manager.
#2.. If you are hearing the windows log on sounds about 15 sec but you can't see anything /  nothing on the LCD for 10 to 15 min did you TRY a different monitor
#3.. What kind of PC (Dell E521) or is it a custom PC and if it is a custom PC what is the motherboard model and what kind of hardware do you have.
#4.. Was the MSCONFIG checked to see what is running and booting with the PC
#5.. Is there any errors / boxes that come up is there any errors in the event viewer?

Sorry it is very hard to help you when we don't know the specifics on your PC, OS bit version etc.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike
This used to happen to me with IDE hdds. Is this IDE? If it is, maybe you have one of the jumpers wrong. You would think it just wouldn't boot if the jumpers are wrong, but for some reason on some machines, it only delays the boot. PROBABLY a timeout of some kind. You need to post the computer model and or specs. next time.

Download Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.

Solve : re-installing Windows XP Pro.?

Answer»

I  have reinstalled WINDOWS xp pro 3 times, and each time after it's done with the lengthy process, it hangs at a screen that says "please wait", with an hourglass. Waiting for hours.   I have tried both the install, and the repair process with the same results.  I'm entering the correct product key, and following all of the directions exactly.  HDD and Memory test good.  It will boot to the desktop, but without a start menu or any icons.  Does not boot in Safe Mode or any other Mode. (debugging mode hangs)  I've tried 2 different copies of Win XP Pro, and both seemed to install correctly.   Don't know what else to try.  Are these burned disks or Microsoft pressed disks?
Good afternoon its hard and welcome to CH

Just some input

  HDD and Memory test good.

#1... How did you test the hard drive and memory?
#2... The disc you used is it a burned copy? or a real Microsoft disc?
#3... Is there any external hard drives / usb thumb drives plugged in.
#4... When you are doing the windows install just have the monitor / keyboard / mouse plugged in. Don't have printers / scanners etc plugged in while doing the Windows set up.
#5... During or after the windows install is there any ERROR's / messages?
#6... The CD drive my be bad and not reading all necessary info during the windows installation.

Sorry for all the questions as we don't know what kind of PC you have, please let us know how you are making out. Thanks Mike     1) This HP laptop was tested at a local computer repair shop. They said that the HDD and Memory test good.
2) Both burned CD's are from the Tech at the computer shop. They're labeled: "Non Dell - XP Pro - SP3". He assured me that both should work.
3) Nothing plugged in but the power supply.
4)     "            "        "    "    "      "        "
5) There are no error messages.  Installation goes smoothly for about 39 minutes, then a Windows XP PAGE appears with an hourglass and "please wait...."
6) Both disks appear to be loading all necessary files and completing the 5 installation steps.Order the appropiate Restore CD's from Delll...Curious as to why (patio) you are advising getting Dell discs for "This HP laptop" ?truenorth    I finally just DECIDED to format and reinstall windows from the copy that I have on disk.  It's quite a chore. Mis-read the previous Post where Dell was mentioned. Then there is nothing wrong with it.

I am not sure what you are trying to achieve here? Quote from: its hard on August 04, 2012, 10:59:27 PM

Solve : RELIANCE MODEM it show?

Answer»

sir i am using reliance 3G dongal and every time when i connect it shows error (Microsoft visual c++ Runtime Library Runtime Error
program: C:\program Files\Reliance 3G\UIM.exe.
R6002- floating point support not loaded.

sir when i uninstall it and reinstall it work properly one time and after that same occur...............

Sir i want to know what is the real problem and how can i fix it.Boss

Step-by-step repair guideAs mentioned earlier, there several common factors that cause this error, so let’s handle them one by one.

(1) Scan for viruses and spyware
Use a reliable anti-virus program to scan

(2) Uninstall the related program
When Windows pops up that error message, see if it indicates a program name or a path to a specific program file. Once you IDENTIFY that program – uninstall it!

In many cases it is MICROSOFT VISUAL C ++.

(3) Delete all that program’s related files and folders

If any files and folders that belong to that program are left on your HD –delete them.
Attention! Just to be on the SAFE SIDE – before you do that, open a new folder on your desktop and keep a backup of those files and folders.

(4) Re-install the latest version of that program and restart your PC
If it was MICROSOFT VISUAL C ++ then download it from here .

In most cases, following these 4 steps should SOLVE the problem.

If not, then there’s probably a problem with one or several incorrect/corrupt file/application paths, program shortcuts, etc.

(5) Detect the source(s) to this error

Use the following Windows errors scanner (free scan) to conduct an in-depth scan to your entire Windows system. By the end of the scan it’ll provide you with a detailed report about the VARIOUS errors that it has detected.I'm speechless...

i already tried replacing the battery.
i cant enter setup bcoz the pc scanning for the attached drives.and i cant go on to another choice bcoz it prompts me first to save the changes.but im going to try that again now.

thanks patio!Good evening vixen24 and welcome back

OK here is a pic of your motherboard   you may want to check to see if the "CMOS jumper" fell off or maybe it is set to "clear position"  .

The jumper will have "3" pins but the jumper will only go ON 2 of them on this image the jumper is E49 If there is no jumper that can be why it is not saving the changes you are making.

If I remember right on that PC to get into the BIOS it is the "F10" key and when you make changes it may be the "F10" key again to save the changes

If the jumper is missing a jumper from a old harddrive or old motherboard should work. Maybe this is why it is always scanning for hardware changes when you are starting the PC

Just in-case you want it. Here is the link to your system it gives you a brake down of it http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11948_div/11948_div.HTML

Please let us know how you make out, Mike

im having trouble looking for the CMOS jumper.il try to upload the pic on monday..

since im really having a great trouble with my mouse and keyboard, i tried to install the hard disk to another pc.a notification appeared tells that a file had been corrupt.the hal.dll..i tried to go to recovery console to copy the missing file to drive c but a notification appeared cannot find the file.i even tried to make the hard disk slave to open the disk but i cannot find the windows folder.

is the hard disk needs to reformat?when i tried a different hard disk and tried to go to recovery console,it prompts me where to open windows (allows me to hit 1) but the drive that im fixing it has no promptGood morning vixen24 and welcome back to CH

when i tried a different hard disk and tried to go to recovery console,it prompts me where to open windows (allows me to hit 1) but the drive that im fixing it has no prompt
is this hard drive from a different PC if so the recovery partition to RESTORE from is not there unless it came from the same model PC as yours. This will not and even if windows would load it would give you a BSOD (blue screen of death)

If you are going to use a different that is fine BUT the hard drive will need to be formatted and then you can install the OS.

#1... Your PC will have a COA / key that is what you use to reinstall windows. The key is 25 digits (5 groups of 5 letters & numbers) This can be anywhere on the outside the case.
#2... If you made the restore disc's from your PC you can use these to install the OS just like it was out of the factory. If you do not have them you can use / borrow a windows disc and use your COA to install windows then you will have to get the drivers from HP to install your hardware (i.e NETWORK card, sound, video etc)
#3...are you still getting any errors? Quote from: vixen24 on July 31, 2012, 02:46:05 AM

  so these are gone?
#4... Are you going to be reinstalling XP again I am assuming?

It very well may be that the original / old hard drive has bad sectors so you will not see some of the directory's Quote from: vixen24 on August 13, 2012, 12:17:13 AM

most of the DC7100 out of the factory used sata hard drives so there is no jumper(s) to worry about so putting it in another PC as a slave shouldn't be an issue so you can get your data off.

If the hal.dll is corrupt you would have to copy that file of a XP cd to your hard drive. But honestly it is just much easier to do a clean install on the HD (hard drive) and be DONE with it.

Hopefully this helps, please let us know how you make out. Mike

Solve : EPSON FX 2175 button problem?

Answer»

Hello guys! I WOULD like to ask about our printer EPSON FX 2175. We are using this computer in our branches we I have problem in some button it is not now functioning. we had purchased last month but pitch and font button is now defective..in other branch only pitch is not functioning...i have 3 branches that has the same problem with the button..what could be the possible cause of this..is it the printer HEAD cable? because i had tried control from a bad printer to good..the control panel buttons are all functioning..it means the control panel has no problem..i guess its the printer head cable..i cant open the printer because it is under warranty..and i have no other parts to test or replace to check if what parts would be the problem..thnx in advance EXPERTSButtons and internal wires/cables on a printer are not something that is user serviceable and I don't think there's anything much ANYONE here could advise you on with this particular issue.

My advice: Return the printers under warranty and demand an explanation as to why all three are having the same issue. Quote from: quaxo on September 03, 2011, 02:16:26 AM

Exactly. These business printers cost $600 each I have found. Warranty action is only course. So many times we read questions like this. Some guy in an office wants to do a quick fix. Maybe to please the boss. Maybe he is the boss. Whatever. THNX guys for the answer, i appreciated it..! i understand its business.. I contact epson technical support and they said just bring it to their SERVICE center. they did not teach  how to fix it but let them to fix it..it was so expensive wooohhh i wish one you can help me..i know one of you are better than our local technicians here...thnx in advance for the hackers..^_^ If they're under warranty they shouldn't be charging you anything, even at a service center.

The warranty information should be in the manual (usually somewhere near the back). I'd have a read through of it and see if this kind of issue (mechanical) is included in the warranty. If it is, and it should be, I'd hold them to that warranty and insist that it gets fixed at no charge to you. That's what warranties are for, to assure the user that the PRODUCT will be problem free for that period of time. Any cost to you (aside from perhaps shipping if necessary) is completely unacceptable in my opinion.Hi Guys anyone can help me with the epson fx 2175 Official receipt printing.... kindly check the image on this link... https://www.dropbox.com/s/0jpjbvswbzdr19y/Image1.jpg?m... please replyGood evening mpgarcia

Solve : Blue screen crashes - Assistance appreciated!?

Answer»

I recently built a computer for my parents, who live about 5 hours from me.  I was informed last night that they PERIODICALLY GET blue screen crashes, and it seems this goes back to January.  I had them run BlueScreenView to see what might be happening, but I'm not familiar enough with the errors to figure out what the most likely problem might be.  It looks like the very first crash in January came from the video card, but none since then.  Could the issue still be with the card, or is the RAM possibly bad?  The computer was build with all new parts.  Here is the output from BlueScreenView of the error logs.  Any information of where to start troubleshooting from a distance would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

I edited your post and DELETED some of the older bsod's just for the sake of format & brevity.

The errors are all over the place and can be caused by a number of things, INCLUDING malware, motherboard, ram, or other hardware. My first guess is ram, second is malware, third is mobo. Let's check the ram first:

To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

You can ALSO run full scans with both your anti virus app and MalwareBytes. So far, the Memtest has been running for about 2.5 hours and has come up with 111 errors!  I'm not sure how to read the errors, but I'm thinking that's a pretty sure sign the memory is bad?  Do you happen to know what sort of information I will be looking for, and what sort of info is given at the end of the test, and where to go to from here?  Thanks, and I'll post again when the test is finished. The ram is bad and needs to be replaced. One error is too many. If you have more than one stick of ram you can remove all but one and run the test again to check which is the bad stick. Thanks for the help, I'll do just that! You're welcome.

Solve : How to restore Sharing/Security for a muddled up network share folder?

Answer»

My muddled Sharing and Security values are causing me to have read-only access to a folder when accessed over a network.

How can I restore these to their default values, and/or determine the source of the problem? Is there a definitive GUIDE for debugging/fixing these TYPES of PROBLEMS?

Finally, after changing Security values on a network shared folder, must all computers on the network be restarted, or is there a lower level resetting procedure I can utilize?

Thanks in advance for any help you may provide,

Solve : System Restore(How to restore back to 6 months or more )?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I need guidance regarding how to do system restore to a restore point 6 months or even older.

Os i have: xp sp3

Around about 2 weeks back i upgraded my system to sp3 for that i created system restore point.

But the problem is when i go to do system restore it doesn't show me the restoration point about 2 weeks old in the list RATHER it only shows and allows to new restore POINTS created within 5-6 days and that does not include that restore point which i created b4 sp3 installation.

So.Is there a way to do system restore to a restore point 6 months or even older? does window allows it or any third party software which helps me retain older restore points?

Note-i tried doing it via safe mode also but didn't helped, also the space ALLOTED for system restore is maxed out.

Thanks in advance
Restore points are more or less like any other file. Once restore points are deleted, it's theoretically possible to recover them if they haven't been overwritten. 2 weeks is usually PLENTY of time to permanently overwrite deleted files with new data. Changing the space allocated only APPLIES to new restore points -- it will not magically undelete old ones.

TL;DR: It's doubtful that it's possible to do a system restore to more than those 5-6 days ago at this point.

Is there any particular reason you need to do a restore? SP3 is an important update; if you don't have it you'll have problems with windows update, some newer programs won't run, and you'll have a harder time getting official support. Is this related to your other thread?

Solve : Cannot use Windows Update and now IE closes as soon as opened?

Answer»

Ok, details - Homemade computer w/Intel mobo, dual core processor, 2.2 ghz, 3.25gb ram, NVidia graph card, SATA hd. Computer blue screened out of the blue the other day. Rebooted, started to load IE, blue screened again. Rebooted, set Avast to boot time scan, blue screen again. On reboot, it did allow the scan, scan found no infections but alot of corrupted files/cabs, etc.
Decided i needed a fresh win install but didn't want to lose my stuff, so installed a new HD. Ran my xp w/sp2 disc (yes, it's real, i have 2 - one from an old computer). About 1/2 way through, install process stopped saying a file was missing from the disc?? srsly? So inserted the other (real) xp w/sp2 disc. Install continued and completed. Downloaded Avast for anti-virus and went to windows update to begin those. Kept getting an error msg saying IE could not open the page. Looked up the error msg on MSKB, it led me through a few links and to a final one that was a download for a 'fix it' program, however the download told me that i could not run it because i needed other software first, Please use Windows Update. Unfortunately, being unable to use windows update is what brought me there... so a vicious cycle that was getting me nowhere. I thought maybe the sp2 didn't fully or correctly install, so went on the hunt for a download of it, found it, downloaded fine, ran it with no errors or issues. Attempted windows update again with the same results. Since the IE with this disc is v.6, thought maybe i could update it and fix this. Attempted to download IE 7 and 8, both with the same result: instant download of a 3kb file which i was promptly told was not a valid win32 application. Duh. Now I have resorted to using Chrome for browser as IE will not even fully load until i get the 'IE has encountered a problem and needs to close, pls tell MS about this' window. Chrome does not seem to have any issues. Anyone have any ideas? I don't know if there's an issue with the win install due to using 2 cds for it (although before IE stopped WORKING, i was able to validate/activate my windows with no problem), but I don't have another original cd to use and hate to spend $100 to find out i have the same issue due to MS no longer supporting anything below sp3, or whatever may be the problem. Please help if you can, any ideas are welcome as i am at a loss at this point. Thank you so much for your time.UPDATE: attempted to download sp3 through Chrome, it downloaded a 10mb file which again said 'this is not a valid win32 app'. Did manage to download IE8 through Chrome, and can now use it, but not much - went to windows update again - still fails saying: The WEBSITE has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem. [Error number: 0x80240036]. this is the same error that told me i needed to use windows update to use the fix. pls help if you can.Good afternoon jaslyne and welcome to CH

XP's SP3 is a lot bigger than 10-20 megs the stand alone install is a little over 300 megs here is the link to download it from http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-service-pack-3.html#.UDfs11IgwqA just scroll down and look on the left for it.

Then you should be OK. If you have a AMD CPU install the fix before you install SP3 that is here http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-sp3-amd-stop-0x0000007E.html#.UDftqFIgwqA if you do not have a AMD CPU don't worry about installing and just install SP3.

Don't worry about the web site I have used them for years and they are safe. The download really comes from MS.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike same issue as before - download says complete but the file is small and says not a valid win32 app - got 19.5mb this time, GUESS that's progress from 10mb lol. thank you for trying to help, really appreciate it. and thank you for the welcome as well Welcome back

What kind of internet do you have cable, sat or DSL etc ?

When you were downloading it I am assuming you were doing it through chrome?

Do you have a download manager running? (i.e Internet Download Manager etc)

The reason you are getting the "not a valid win32 app" is because the download did not complete

Or is there any browser add-ons / firewall running that is interfering if you just tried to download it through chrome and it still didn't work there has to be a reason.

Did you ever try to run IE in safe mode / without add-ons and in-case you don't know where it is just go to all programs and look for IE safe mode and try running it. Now when IE OPENS go to tools then internet options then go to the connection tab then click on LAN settings then take all check marks out of all boxes and click OK to all boxes to close them and then restart the PC and see how it works.

Have you ever used malwarebytes you can get it here http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=malwarebytes&platformSelect=Windows&tag=srch%3Ba&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows I know that you said that you did a scan with avast but just to be safe I would do a scan with it. Avast is good but MWB is really good for a manual scanner. After the download it will want to update just let it if it can if it can't update just do a quick scan if it finds something let it remove everything it finds it is almost never wrong on what it finds. If it does find something just run a couple more quick scans until clean then try to update and scan again.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike

I have cable internet, and Chrome has it's own download manager, so that was used for the download. I did check the LAN settings as you suggested and NONE of the boxes are/were checked, so that's ok. I was able to download the malwarebytes. It updated with no problem and ran scans with no problems. Did find one object on the first run, which I let it remove. After finishing with it, I tried windows update again, with the same problem. I just don't get it, it has to be an OS issue as I am able to download seemingly anything non-windows related. I don't know, I'm so lost on this. Thank you again for your input, much appreciated.Good evening jaslyne and welcome back

If you want please follow the instructions so we can get you taken care of

Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

There has to be a reason to your issue even knowing you said you only had one BSOD

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike I haven't had any BSOD on this install, that was on my HD that i have replaced. My issue now is not BSOD but the fact that i cannot update windows, and therefore cannot use programs that won't run with this older sp2, i.e. games, graphics programs, websites that don't display due to whatever this issue is, etc. as well as drivers that won't install and the basic fact that my computer is not up to date with critical and non-critical fixes. I'm sorry for the confusion, but the BSOD on my old HD is what caused me to install a new drive and do this messed up windows installation. Thank you again, Mike, for all your help.Hello again jaslyne

Thank you for getting back to me, sorry about the misunderstanding about the BSOD when I read your post I didn't think that you did the installation the new HD but I have a question for you your XP key is that for XP home or XP pro

Mike

If you want to stay with XP I found a new copy of XP Pro for under 40.00 http://www.bmem.net/Microsoft-Windows-XP-Pro-OEM-SP3_p_15.html

Also if you have a thumb drive you can download SP3 from a different PC and then install on your PC that is having the issue

It is xp home, and thank you for the idea of downloading from another computer - had totally not even thought about that  Hi Mike, and ty so much again for your time today. Just wanted to throw this in there for you, when i attempted the download with no firewall or av running, i DID finally get an error about connection resetting almost immediately, so going to try to download from another computer.

I'm so confused    I attempted the download of sp3 on two other computers - one running win7 and one running xp - the win7 one got a file with a size of 19mb, the xp one got 325kb file. neither got the full 300+mb file. What I don't get is, i have downloaded games (as a test) and a couple of the programs that I would normally download for use on my computer, none as large as 300+mb, but some pretty decent sized ones, with no issues like this. It seems to strictly be related to windows downloads.Good afternoon jaslyne and welcome back

If these PC are at your location / home all the PC's that you have tried doing this download with has the issue than the problem is in your network / router or the cable modem. Is the router yours or is it the cable companies? if it is yours try resetting it.

What model router do you have? You may need to contact your ISP later on but lets finish trying to get this.

Mike modem is cable company's, routers are mine, i have 3 actually... one main wired one with an extender wired one and another wireless add-on. main one that is direct connected to my modem and shows in http://192.168.1.1 is a linksys NR041... extender is linksys also, wireless is belkin.Good afternoon jaslyne and welcome back

If I am reading / interpreting your post correct. You have one router, one switch / hub and a wireless AP.

You may want to look at the back of the Linksys NR041 make sure the the cable modems cat cable is plugged into the "internet" port on the router then skip a port and plug your next cat cable into port.

So it will look like this "Internet" empty - cat cable - cat cable - cat cable (you don't have to use all the ports this is just an example)
Internet      4            3              2              1        (this is the way the back of the router is labeled)

Is the problem PC plugged into the NR041 or is it into the switch / hub if your PC is plugged into the switch / hub disconnect it and plug it into the NR041 and see how it does. The NR041 is the only true router correct? the middle unit is just simple switch?

Hope to hear from you soon,Mike

Sorry, but that's all the pseudo-Californian-surfer crap I know. If you don't understand any of this then I apologise - it's just that I don't like patronising the brain-damaged...

Firstly, writing a clearer post actually helps you. It allows people to easily see the problems you're having, and will therefore make more of an attempt to help. Cramming everything into the one paragraph doesn't help, and neither does the lazy spelling an punctuation.

Typo's are okay. Deliberately spelling like that makes people think you're a bit of an idiot who doesn't deserve to be helped.

You might also want to have a read (you can read, yes?) of these two sites:
www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html

Lastly, do you not have any sense of initiative? If that  link to SiSoft Sandra is "ded" [sic] then why not use Google to FIND another? Is it not at least plausable that some other site may have linked to it?

Phew. I think I'll call it a night at that... :'(Merlin WHY SHOLD I apologies dud I didn’t do NOTHENG  to here man ! and she starts Talking like she knows me ! if ane thing she Should apologies to me man !

Ooow and avre one in here needs to have more Netiquette tord's one and another ;P Specially Joleen!!!!If you talk in a slang way like that it is very hard to understand what you are saying. Wether or not it is right or wrong but people judge other people on what they do... all the time, everybody... phycological fact of life. If you talk like that people won't have a very high opinion of your intellegence.

Also, it makes it very hard to help you if we don't understand easily.

Maybe Joleen should not have been so harsh to you, but she has a point: you're making it hard for us to help you. And reacting back like that only makes the problem worse.

"am tired of getting all these evil put dawns" Again, try talking in proper English. I'm not trying to put you down but rather help you.  It really is hard to work out what you are saying.

What OS are you using???

It's usual to insert a boot disk and reboot not hit Enter.  What are you trying to achieve and is the bootdisk for Win.98??Your BIOS might not have the correct boot up sequence.

Are you sure it is a boot disk?

Did you restart the computer with the boot disk in the drive instead or just pressing enter?

What OS are you running?

PandyIs this file a system file?I can not delete any files, system or non systemis this your pc and you are the admin?.......>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q308421Try deleting in safe-mode.I'm on Windows 2000, the info you suggest is for Windows XP, will this work for 2000?YES!!! or the deltree command but we will stick with a download  of advanced system optimizer from www.major geeks.com......for now.....Thanks, I was able to delete my files. One problem though, I inadvertly deleted a folder that I needed and when I tried to restore it I got this message: Cannot create or replace file: Access denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write PROTECTED and that the file is not currently in use.

Any suggestions? That folder is probably gone if you've deleted it and it's not in the recylce bin. Try logging on with enough access rights. The folder is in the recycle bin, but it will not restore. When I hit the restore button, this is what I get:
Cannot create or replace file: Access denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

There are other items in the bin, I can restore them, but not the folderStrange... what are you LOGGED on as? Administrator? Try restoring it in safe-mode?I'm logged in as Admin, still can't retreive folder. Thanks for your help Administrators should have ownership of the Recycler directory. To TAKE ownership of the directory, perform the following:
Log on as Administrator. Using Windows Explorer, locate the directory and select Properties/Ownership.

Solve : Mozilla Firefox Won't Load Flash??

Answer»

So after being hounded by Adobe FLASH whenever I updated it, I finally updated Adobe Flash Player. Then, when I tried to go on YouTube as usual, MOZILLA said "Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page." And also, in a red bar, "You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash player to watch this video. Download it from Adobe." So naturally I was confused, as I had JUST UPDATED Flash, but I still went to the link. It was a download link for Adobe Flash Player 11, the one I had JUST UPGRADED TO, but I thought maybe something went wrong with the update, so I downloaded it again. Everything worked fine, until I went to click on the installer for the updated version of Adobe Flash. I DOUBLE clicked on it and it seemed to be installing, and working fine, but when it went to retrieve the install it didn't load and came up with an ERROR that said "Installation encountered errors. Actionlist not found." So then I went to other computer help forums and all of them said that uninstalling flash player and reinstalling it worked for them. So I uninstalled my current flash and attempted to reinstall. It did the same thing, with the same error..... But then I tried loading YouTube in Internet Explorer, and it worked JUST FINE. And I still don't even have Flash Player, just Shockwave. So I've been using IE for the past week, but I hate it and would rather be on my Mozilla Firefox 14. I just don't know how to fix the FACT that flash doesn't recognize that it's there! ANY help at ALL would be nice because I just don't know what to do and I would rather not keep using IE.  Flash has 2 versions, one for IE, the other for all others.
Select your version here:  http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer/As a side note you may want to run the Flash uninstaller before you install the latest ver.,,,

Available at the same link above. Thanks, it worked!! Thanks soo much!

Solve : How Do I Rescue Data?

Answer»

I have a system that has nearly filled my 40GB hard disc. I have managed to corrupt the operating bsystem so that the system would not work. As I was going to expand the system by buying a 2nd hard disk I have re-installed the OS (Windows XP) on the new disk, but have a pile of data on the other (old) disk.

We all had our own log on, and some of the CHILDREN had declared a password to login. I can see the data in the directories for the people who have not declared a password, but can not see the directories of those that have declared a password.

How can I gain access to these?Just thinking aloud really. Cut and paste the data which you can see to the new drive. (How big is your new drive, btw.)

This will give you space on the old drive.

Replace the old drive as Master. Then run the recovery console from the XP CD and run chkdsk at the prompt. Then see if it will boot to the desktop, and if it will, run sfc /scannow.

OR http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

hook up the old hard drive as the slave move the jumpers>maybe this will do it>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q306186Log in as Administrator. RIGHT CLICK on the directory that you cannot see. Left click on Properties. Left click on Security. Left click on Advanced. Left click on Owner. Choose a new owner -- Administrator in your case, and then click apply. Click Ok.

Try now to see those directories and files. If it doesn't work, then you should set the security for that directory. But just in case you can't access those files.
From now on it is very simple to gain access to files. Just play with security tab. (Right click on directory, properties, security). If the Security tab does not appear, you have to disable simple security and sharing (or something similar).THANKS for the sugestions CHAPS - I had no luck, so I just bit the bullet and deleted it all.

If the "product code" you are talking about is the product key for Windows XP then yes, you can. Be sure to DOWNLOAD and install all drivers after doing so (starting with the chipset driver).it looks LIKE this
except it is home editionHome EDITION will not work...
You will need to FIND a CD with a version that matches yours...or contact the manuf. for Restore CD's...

Solve : My icon by the clock says "cable unplugged" but it is not?

Answer»

Hi There
For some unknown reason my internet seems to have gone from my tower.
Yet I can still get on line via my latops

1 with a cable connection
2 with a wireless contection.

The cable from the modem to tower has been checked with a LAN cable check and all is good

if I go into Control Panel > Network Connection, I am told "cable unplugged or firewalled"

i have even through system restore back to Monday last week 13th August but still have the problem.

I am online at the moment typing this via my dongle

I run Kaspersky Internet Security 2012, I have even tried disabling that, with no luck
Good afternoon scubatony and welcome to CH

If I am reading / understanding your POST correct it sound like 1 of 2 things happened.

The drivers for the network card are corrupt or the network card it self has failed.

Is the network card integrated into the motherboard or is it a PCI card and what model is the desktop (i.e Dell C521 etc) and what OS (operating system) are you running on the problem PC.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910389 Quote from: hartbeatmr on August 25, 2012, 11:35:42 AM

Hi There Mike
Thanks for the reply

There is no network card, it is an onboard card and I connect via RJ45 socket direct into the rear of the machine.

Physically there is no card. However on-board devices still appear to the system as add-on cards, unsurprisingly, these use drivers.

Hi There
Thanks for your help

In actual fact I had already been down that route but did not post it

Link Speed/Duplex MODE

1000Mbps/Full Duplex
100Mbps/Full Duplex
100Mbps/Half Duplex
10Mbps/Full Duplex
10Mbps/Half Duplex
Auto Negotiation

All there entries resulted in "Local Area Connection" A network cable is unplugged

The link mostly covers the main problem. However, the cable unplugged or firewalled(?) seems to be another issue. Try reinstalling or removing your protection software including disabling any firewall.I have removed KIS 2012 and the problem is still there, it is now reinstalledGood morning scubatony and welcome back to CH

One thing you can check the network cable that goes from your PC to the ROUTER move the cable over one port.

So it will look something like this "internet" empty cable cable cable (This is just an example if you do not have 3 PC's then there would be just one cable)
                                                      YELLOW          4        3       2      1
So if your cat cable is in port 4 (next to the internet port) move it over to another port.

You can also try restarting the PC into safe mode with network support and try to get on the internet if you can with out an issue than you may have a software program / second firewall etc running that is interfering with it / blocking that network connection.

If that doesn't help try updating the network card drivers
also check that the network card is not disabled (but I don't think it is) to check this just right click the icon and when the grey box pops up if it says enable (in the list) then the device is disabled and just click on enable.

Try replacing the cable even if the test said it was good doesn't mean the cable is good. Was this cable tested with the network cards software or with cable testing equipment. Just in-case you don't know Inside the cat cable there is 8 wires (4 twisted pairs) The lights on the network card if there are 2 one is for connection / power (this light should be steady lit) the second one is for activity (this one should be flashing / blinking)

If the above steps do not help go into the device manager and find the network card listed then right click on it and pick UN-install then reboot the PC when the PC is restarted windows will reinstall it automatically.

Hopefully this should take care of you. Please let us know how you make out.. Mike

To give you a bit of background information, so you will see where I am coming from

I ran my own Mechanical & Electrical Contracting Company till very recently when I closed it down due the recession.
I had a number of people working for me Electrician, Fitters etc.etc.

As part of the work that came in was the installation of computer networks and LAN's, I also built servers and populated racks.
Part and parcel of this busines was to test all the associated equipment, which included the various cables to that end amongst some of my equipment I have retained a Network Modular Cable Tester this very clever piece of kit will test pin outs, broken wires and crossed wires etc.

I am on several other Forums and as yet nobody has given me something that will clear this messGood morning scubatony and welcome back

I am sorry I didn't know that you had done all the suggestions as they were not in the posts and also that you have previous experience on cat cables etc.

I was not trying to be a wise guy to you I was just trying to be as clear as possible as I was not aware of your experience.

If you are on-line with a usb / RJ45 dongle?

Quote from: scubatony on August 25, 2012, 11:25:39 AM

I am online at the moment typing this via my dongle
Well if nothing is working I would spend the 20$ and replace / bypass the on-board NIC.

The NIC is integrated disable it in the BIOS and buy a new network card install it and you will be all set. I really do not think it is a problem in the OS it self.

Hope this helps, Mike

At long last I have solved this problem

I made myself a drink of tea and sat and thought about the problem.

I then dissected it bit by bit what worked and what did not.

I came to the conclusion the cable modem works because I can get online with my laptop with the wireless facility.

So that rules the modem out.

I had already tested the LAN cable with my LAN cable tester, which proved ok.

I knew the tower was working, except for the LAN connection.

So by process of elimination I deduced that fault lay at the socket of my LAN connection on my tower.

As I build my own machines, like so many other people I had a spare daughter board LAN card which I have now installed, which works fine.

I was going to build another machine anyway sometime this year, because this tower is getting past its sell by date, so this problem has now escalated me into spending some money.

At this point may I THANK ALL who contributed to try and help me with my problem and if ever you are in the area ( South Wales )drop in for a cup of tea, no drink & drive here.

Solve : Cannot drag toolbars to a different position in XP?

Answer»

I used to have my quick launch BAR on my left side of my screen with auto-hide activated, was very convenient for me and freed up task bar space. Since this last install, i cannot move the bar from the taskbar (no, it isn't locked). I even tried creating a folder on the desktop and making a tool bar using it, but cannot move it either. Any ideas? Thank you Good evening jaslyne and welcome back

Click a blank portion of the taskbar.

Hold down the primary mouse button, and then drag the mouse pointer to the place on the screen where you want the taskbar. For example, you may want

the taskbar to be positioned vertically on the right side of your screen.

After you move the mouse pointer to the position on your screen where you want the taskbar, release the mouse button.

If I remember right that is it, Mike that is exactly what i have tried. usually when you do this, a small square appears beside the mouse pointer while you're dragging the bar. the square doesn't appear and the bar does not move. Good evening jaslyne

The taskbar may be locked that is the only way I know and it should work or maybe it had to be done when it was locked? I would try both ways

Hope it works, Mikei have tried both with it locked and unlocked. when i've done it before, it was always in the unlocked state. i can do it on my other xp computer, but not on this one. i know it 'should' work, but it won't, was hoping for some insight as to what would keep it from working. thank you anyway! not a major issue, just an annoyance, unless of course, it's a symptom of a bigger problem that i will discover down the road.Hello again

I know it should there is a reg file that is not right. But on the plus side MS has a fix for it http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253679 just scroll down the page to the bottom.

Hope it work for you, Mike although the fixit program was actually to restore the taskbar to it's original position, i tried it anyway, to see if it would fix the reg key you said might be messed up. i still can't move the bar. so, i don't know at this point. i will do some searching on it tomorrow and see if i can find ANYTHING more. thank you again so much for your time, Mike. Hello again

Try turning the quick launch off and then do it (move it). I know you know but make sure the lock is off. If that doesn't work try GRABBING the task bar by the clock area but still in blank area of the task bar.

That's all I have found so far  In order to undock Toolbars, you NEED to drag the Gripper on the left or top side of the Toolbar you want to undock. The only toolbar that will not undock is of course the Taskbar itself. (Showing open APPLICATIONS).Good evening BC_Programmer

What do you mean on Gripper?

Thank you, Mike Quote from: hartbeatmr on August 25, 2012, 07:53:02 PM

What do you mean on Gripper?

Cursor is over the left-hand gripper of the Quick Launch Toolbar.Good evening BC_Programmer

Thank you after all these years I have never known that as a gripper but it makes since.

Enjoy, Mike aha! tysm! i was trying to grab it in a blank spot, like mskb says. and then on the right-hand 'gripper'. used the left-hand one and it worked    thank you both for your time, much appreciated

Solve : No System Sounds on a Dell?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 3000. It is running XP SP3 and has 2 gig ram. I have recently noticed (don't know exactly how long) that I am having no system sounds. The startup, shutdown, usb insertion dings etc. My SOUND is working as I can play music either from the internet or a CD. I have no idea what is wrong. I have run several malware scans with no results. I have had in the past some malware that was removed as probably most computers have. I can't really say if this COINCIDED with one another. Good EVENING Frazzled and welcome to CH

OK so if I am understanding you correct you are NOT getting the windows sounds, but audio cd's / mp3 etc work.

It sound like the windows default audio is not selected in the sound audio device options when that is open look for the sound tab and see if one is selected.

Please let us know how you make out,  Mike Another thing to try if hartbeatmr's solution doesn't work for you is to click once on the taskbar volume icon, and click mixer. Make sure that 'system sounds' is not low or muted. If that looks fine you can open start -> run -> "mmsys.cpl", go to the sounds tab, and make sure a sound scheme is set up.Thanks for answering guys, Hm mm, I checked the audio properties and the scheme that is selected is the windows default. Also the volume icon has the sound at maximum. I am at a loss here unless there is something going on whereby at boot-up or whatever, the sound card comes in or is initialized after windows. When I check each and every sound in the windows default, it works as it should, just not automatically when it should as when connecting a usb device.Good evening Frazzled and welcome back

I am sorry to hear that the tips did not work.

When you plug in the USB drive can you access it, like you can move data to and from it?

You MAY have a partially corrupt driver here you can download the driver http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/dimension-3000 Just pick the audio driver and follow the instructions.

Hopefully this helps, Mike  Start - Run - Type services.msc - Check your Windows Audio Service if its not disabled. If yes, double click and change to automatic and hit apply.  Check also Plug and Play if it is also activated. Thanks guys,
I think I may have fixed it, though I do not know why. What I have done is to deselect  the default sound scheme,SETTING it to none, reboot, then reselect the default scheme, testing each sound making sure they were all assigned properly (which they were) and rebooting again. Now I can hear the wonderful windows sounds when the computer starts and shutdowns. Thanks for your help and ideas.
