Solve : Strange Unknown Issue with Boot-up and Strange Symbols?

Answer»

I have a strange issue with my gaming computer, and I'm not sure if its Hardware, software or virus, but I think its virus or hardware.

the problem started when i was on a website while viewing a video, wireless was slow, and the screen began having small problems like areas with lower resolution and frame-rate drop, at first  i thought it was the monitor and turned it off and turned it back on, but that did not HELP, so i exited out of Google chrome which after several seconds did shut out, and then normally turned my computer off. several hours later when i tried to turn it back on, very strange symbols displayed all over the screen during boot up, until the windows XP loading sign which was normal, but then after that ended the TOP of the screen turned blue and if i MOVED my mouse, the top half of the screen would display and then go no further and after several seconds revert back to blue. so i shut it down manually by holding the power button, and then rebooted it in safety mode. safety mode did boot, but it still had no background and strange bluelines in it, as well as being slow. i immediately started my virus protection scan, but so far it has shown nothing. i have no idea what the problem could be, and any help would be appreciated.

Symptoms:
Boot-up problems
Strange symbols all over screen ex. the a with ~ over it
will not boot up except in safety mode

the computer is a custom BUILT gaming computer, and it is nearly 3 years old, so a piece of hardware may have burned out.
i do not however know much about the chips inside and what version of XP it runs onSeen Video cards fail and do this. Do you have a spare video card to try out or remove videocard to try integrated video?

Solve : Re: No System Sounds on a Dell?

Answer»

I've had a similar problem but I get NO sound out o the system speaker, EXCEPT when I type out files that have the "non-printing" characters, etc. specifically Control-G, the bell sound.  So I know it can make "NOISE" but just can't get it to be normal.   I've tried updating the drivers on every conceivable component, deleted/uninstalled every device, including "system speaker", and re-detects them all but still no sound.Good morning dbeorn and welcome to CH

The only thing that I can understand out of your post is that you may have some kind of sound issue? "I get NO sound out o the system speaker"

What do you mean on this "EXCEPT when I type out files that have the "non-printing" characters, etc"

If I am not mistaken this does nothing in windows "Control-G" maybe you have this set up for a short cut with-in a software program.

What model PC is this that you are talking about "Dell C521 or a HP A6400F etc"
What OS (operating system) XP or windows 7 etc
Have you tested the speakers by playing a audio CD if so does it work

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike  What app are you running when you press CTRL-G ? ?
We thrive on details...Ctrl-G in the command prompt (same as ASCII code 0x7) is the 'BELL' character, which is an instruction for a console window to play a beep sound. On windows XP (or maybe it's vista) and older, it's done by the motherboard's bell or speaker. Windows 7 does this as a system sound now because some newer PC's don't have said speaker, and it's really loud and irritating.

That said, it's likely that you can hear the beep sound because the motherboard speaker (or whatever is used to play the sound) is fine, but your soundcard has failed, you have bad drivers, or something's unplugged or something.Good evening TechnoGeek

Thank you I NEVER knew that

Mike Quote from: hartbeatmr on September 06, 2012, 04:59:56 PM

Good evening TechnoGeek

Thank you I never knew that

Mike

I've learned a lot from the good ol' MSDN library Still doesn't answer what app he was in...as it would behave differently...
Also if it is assigned as a hotkey no sound is assigned to it by default...

We need more info,,,period. It rang my bell in the command prompt.

I think the OP is getting confused between the system speaker and the normal windows sounds generated through the sound card.

Try looking in Start>Settings>Control Panel>Sounds & Audio>Sounds Tab.Sorry - ^G, ctrl-G is the ASCII 007 character.  Use notepad-plus-plus and the "character panel" (or your favorite binary or full ASCII EDITOR  ) to insert ASCII 007 BEL character in a batch file such as this (I did this from the console/command prompt and ^G inserts the proper character - Control-Z to end file and save/exit - don't know if this editor will preserve the characters here):

copy con: sounds.bat
echo off
echo ^G^G^G
start sndvol32.exe
start mmsys.cpl
^Z

So, basically, I've gone through all the devices and the setup options from the control-panel apps listed above and still no "sound" but yet the internal speaker APPEARS to work when ^G "the bell" is rendered???  One thing I have noticed - I have MagicJack and it appears under AUDIO in the MMSYS panel as "USB Internet phone by TigerJet" - maybe that's interfering but I'm sure we had the problem before we got that.  Also, on MMSYS.CPL under Volume->advanced it gives the option to "select speakers" but internal speaker isn't an options - but "no speakers" is.  I've tried about every combo - my soundcard, when I look at the drivers, etc. say "it's working normally"  or whatever the verbage is - but I've had plenty of computers lie to me before - it's a SoundMAX sound-card - is there a definitive "sound card dead" test? - I haven't found something like that either.  I uninstall it and it redetects it just fine - but no sound  - CD's won't play either.

I'll try to get something to plug in and test that way...  It's a DELL, so the card is, of course (as most are these days), integrated.  WinXP, SP3, DELL Dimension 8400

Thanks for your help,

DaveThat's Notepad-plus-plus - something zapped my plus signs...And it DID zap my control-G's      - this is a DOS batch file I created.

copy con: sounds.bat
echo off
echo ^G^G^G
start sndvol32.exe
start mmsys.cpl
^Z

Solve : Alternatives to rstrui.exe (System Restauration)?

Answer»

Alternatives to rstrui.exe (System Restauration)

I would a more powerful UTILITY to manage the restore system settings.

Best Regards
Disk Imaging software takes a "snapshot" of your drive as it exists at the time you create the image. You can then restore the entire image or any file(s) or folder(s) you choose. It is a virtually foolproof way of backing up your system and providing a safe haven in the event of a catastrophe that REQUIRES you to blow away your system partition and restore it to a previous state. It also allows you to "test" various software and be confident that you have a the ability to return to the prior state any time you choose.

I use Acronis True Image. It is the best of BREED, but it isn't free. The best free alternative is Macrium Reflect.

1) I create an image of my system partition once a week to a second hard drive and keep the 2 or 3 most recent images. I also image my other partitions about once a month. I always enable "verify image" in the options. It takes a little longer, but insures a valid image.

2) I also create an image before performing any drive level function (ie, changing the size of a partition) or making any significant change to the OS (installing a service pack, upgrading IE, etc). Also sometimes before installing new software.

3) Images may be created on any medium (cd, dvd, external drive, etc). For obvious reasons they should not be stored on the same drive you are imaging. The best option is a second internal hd if you have one.

4) Images may be created "in the background" within the OS. If you need to restore the system partition, that will need to be done before the OS loads. You can start the process within the application in the OS and it will then tell you it needs to reboot to finish the process. Alternatively, you can boot to a "recovery disk" which you can create when you first install the software (or to the application disk itself if you have one). Other partitions can be restored without a reboot.

The method about rstrui.exe, but with an auxiliary utility to improve perfomance.

Do you know anyone to improve configuration quickly ?

It's my fault.
I have six times windows xp pro installed in my pc. Every time I have to obtain a restore point I have to revise what units are supervised and what not are supervised.
(I have seven hard disks).

By different causes sometimes the units are disconfigurated and when I obtain a automatic restore point I can use later because have include another units supervised from its own systems.

Really I only wants the main system unit supervised.

Solve : two problems - media player and internet connectivity?

Answer»

Problem 1: I inherited a Dell D520 Latitude running on Windows XP with Starter Pack 3. Windows Media Player will not work; the error message says I'm not online. The problem is that I am and I know for a fact that I am because of what I have to go through to get it online (problem 2). In order to get online, I have to click Start, Run, enter "%SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s", OK, Wired AutoConfig, Starter Type: AUTOMATIC, Start, OK. Then I click Start again, Run, enter "ncpa.cpl", OK, Wireless Area Connection, Change settings of this connection, Wireless Networks, Use Windows to reconfigure... and OK. Please don't let that sequence confuse you into thinking I know the first thing about computers; that is just something I learned out of necessity. How do I a) get Windows Media Player to recognize a pre-established, existing internet connection and b) get my system to remember and automatically connect to my modem? If it helps, I use a mobile hot spot from Clear and I am NOT REQUIRED to enter the password again. Thanks to anyone who can provide any assistance and know that I envy your mad computin' skillz! LOL since you inherited a COMPUTER why not do a system recovery or try a system restore, a recovery will GIVE you a fresh start, if its an hp (which it is not, but could have the option maybe) it can do a non destructive system recovery which means the main files you have won't be deleted like favorites and typing docs but cookies and internet history will be gone and so on, you could also try to install an older version of WMP, wish i could give you a true answer to your problemsAaaannnnd how exactly would I do that? O.Oto do a system restore you would need to go to accessories and system tools and select a date to go back to but i prefer a system recovery I think that option would be in the system tools option or you can just do a search, search for recovery to make a recovery cd, unless dell has a self system recovery option like hp just look at the screen when you tun on the computer does it say f11 system recovery or check to see in your my computers if your computer has a D drive if it does it has some kind of ssytem recoveryAny wireless access point could always be configured to automatically connect when the network is in range. The network profile for the previous accessed network is saved by your network explorer properties, tab. There is a checkmark option for that option. What particular modem hotspot is it? I don't use WMP primarily for any entertainment or online media access, but there might be a setting also to enable or run. Usually if the computer was able to connect successfully then WMP will follow. Found this ONE also http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#wmp9

Solve : XP welcome screen, fast user switching problem?

Answer»

Dear all,

I got a bit of a problem concerning my XP Home Edition COMPUTER. It concerns the welcome screen and fast user switching.

I recently got a piece of Biometric equipment (BioTouch USB 200) and tried installing onto my XP BUT it was only compatible to windows 2000/NT but I found that afterwards (when I emailed Identix (manufacturer) who told me that the version I got is not compatible with xp)

So I installed the hardware onto the xp and like the manufacturer (Identix) said it was not compatible but I had already installed it, so naturally I uninstalled the hardware and restarted the computer but then the problem occurred which was that the xp welcome screen and fast user switching were disabled, so I went to control PANEL – user accounts and tried changing it back to fast user switching but I got an error MESSAGE….

“A recently installed program has disabled the welcome screen and fast user switching. To restore these features, you must uninstall the program. The following file name might help you identify the program that made the change

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msgina.dll                                                       ”

So that’s the error message I get, so if anybody knows how I could rectify the problem and how I could get the welcome screen and fast user switching back, I would be very grateful. Thanks in ADVANCE and much appreciated, I have also sent an email to identix which I am waiting for a response.

Please anyone
ok, I want you to click on start, then to accessories, followed by system tools, and then click on system restore. This will allow you to put your computer back to a time before you installed the hardware. I would reccomend restoring your hard disk to ONE day before you installed the hardware. Let me know what happens....

Solve : Windows Media Player opens OFF desktop!?

Answer»

I feel really stupid because this is probably a really easy fix and I'm just not computer LITERATE enough to fix it.

When I start Windows Media Player it opens off of the desktop and I can't SEE it.   How do I get it back on my desktop so I can use it?

Please help me!!!  Thanks so much!!!HUH?

What do you mean it opens off of the desktop?  If you can't see it, is it minimized or in your task BAR?Nope, it's not minimized.  In fact, when I hit MINIMIZE, I can see it QUICKLY move from the right side, off the desktop, down to the taskbar and visa versa when I maximize it.  Weird, huh? It's off the edge of your screen! Try right clicking its bar on the bottem and clicking move. Then drag your mouse towards the visiable area.

Also, go to display options > settings and increase the resolution. This will extend your desktop's size and you might be able to see it, drag it onto a viewable area. You can then either change back the resolution, or keep the current one if you like it (matter of personal prefference)What version of media player is this?

what is your internet connection? speed?Johnathon has some good questions. Also, do you defragment your computer?

You say you formatted... hm well unless you've not done it very well, or if you're computer is so poorly maintained, then it's probably a hardware problem as formatting practically resets everything. Was your computer always this slow?

And what's your monitor? Lower-end LCDs can have "ghosts" or "shadows" on the screen.it sounds like it MIGHT be a virus you've recently recieved somehow since you reformatted your hard drive. Try running Norton 2005 (if you have) or ad-aware, spybot s&d, etc.... this might clear the problem.

Perhaps but your not giving us much to work with. What o/s are you using ?
Do you get any error messages from OE ?
Have you checked to be sure your configuration is correct ?
What do you have your SECURITY settings at ?
Has your OE ever worked properly ?
this sort of info helps

If you are running XP go to your Internet Options and click on programs and make sure that your browser and Outlook Express are the defaults.

If you are not sure, just click on the reset web settings buttons and that might fix the problem. (If IE is your current browser)

More info would be nice too though.
do you have any programs like NIS....mail washer etc...on your pc...is your outlook express set -up properly...most isp have a readme text or web gifs...to show you how to?you try a repair if you think that its not settings or any other program causing it....control panel/add/remove programs scroll down the list and click ie 6now click ie6 and hit the remove button...and chose repair ie 6..........Hai I am Bharani

Previously a couple of months ago i got a problem Technical People solved my issues.
Hope i can expect the same for this issue.
Whether it can be a "Option" or "Software" for my need.

Waiting for any one's Reply.

- BharaniBharani.......Things for you to consider before ......you assume someone is spying on you......Outlook Express has several nice features built into it .......One is the ability to ask for and send a receipt. I use that feature if I am Emailing a number of people and I need to know that they have received my message and have read it .

Now then if you still feel that this feature was designed and incorporated in Outlook Express to spy on you ........do the following:  Open your Outlook Express "In box" , Up at the top .......click on the "options" button , next select "options" from the drop down menu , when it opens click on the receipts tab........look down and mark......Never send a receipt.....
click apply and then ok ........
Your all done .

Solve : Computer has suddenly become slow to bring up pages, sometime does nothing?

Answer»

The computer is only a few years old and was the fast reliable one in the house. Sometime after a scan by PC tools, which I did regularily, it became slow to respond in bringing up pages. The little blue circle would just spin on the screen. If you were on a page and hit a link, it again would be slow or not even respond to that click of the link. AVG shows no viruses, Malware Bytes Anti -Malware shows nothing, I've defragged and run CC Cleaner and it doesn't seem any better. I also did a system restore to before that last scan. It's an HP with AMD Athlon running windows 7 with 4.0 GB of RAM. Thanks1) If you are TALKING about the "registry cleaner" in PC Tools you are doing more harm than good.

2) CCleaner is an essentially benign utility that has absolutely no effect on computer performance.

3) Contrary to the title of the thread it sounds as though your only issue is with the web browser and not the computer in general, is that correct? If so, have you tried a different browser just as a test? If not, please do so.It may also be a general connection issue as well... Quote from: patio on August 27, 2012, 02:27:13 PM

It may also be a general connection issue as well...
Agreed. If we try a different browser it will help narrow down the cause.I went with Google Chrome and I am still having the same issues. Sometimes it works, othertimes the small blue circle spins, other times half a page loads or nothing at all.  The registry cleaner I ran was from PC performer. PC Tools, I run Spyware doctor. Let me know what else you may need to know or what I should do next. As I said, registry cleaners CAUSE problems, they do not cure anything. It's very possible whatever your registry cleaner did exacerbated your problem.

Do you have other computers in the house? If so, do they have the same problem? If you don't, and if the only issue you are having is with the web pages LOADING in your browser and it happens with more than one browser I suggest you contact your ISP before we go any further. There is a laptop in the house that doesn't have this problem. The other desktop is down, my wife's Dell. (See my other posts about FLASHING and nonflashing amber light on Dell not booting up). Anyways, so now that we have it somewhat narrowed down and I now know registry cleaners are bad, what can I do to try to bring it back to how it was before? How is your computer connected to the internet?

Try starting in safe mode + networking and see if it improves.Download Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next REPLY, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.

You might need to uninstall your AVG by a removal tool and test the browsing experience again but you might have a connection problem as Patio stated and with how you connect either by wired or wireless as Fed suggested.http://speccy.piriform.com/results/Elo1nvGJr4buxtQfrjf4HMF

Solve : Keyboard/mouse settings issues?

Answer»

Keyboard

I bought a laptop replacement in Japan, which naturally comes with a Japanese (layout) keyboard. I installed English windows XP, downloaded the east asian language support package which allows me to type in Japanese, etc. However, I am still stuck on US/English keyboard. How can I switch to Japanese keyboard? I'm trying to do it through regional LANGUAGES in the control panel, but it's not working.  Regardless if I change the typing language, or select Japanese keyboard, all keys are still US keyboard.

Mouse

I've also got a touchpad mouse (sorry i dont know the proper term) which is below the keys on the keyboard, and I can't change the settings for this.  In control panel, mouse, hardware, I find two mice - ps2 compatible mouse and logitech usb cordless mouse.  Both said to be working properly.  As far as I can tell, changing the properties (buttons, pointers, etc) affects both at the same time.  I want to disable the touchpad mouse, and keep the logitech working.  Another issue is both mice interfere with typing.  If the mouse is positioned on a typable surface in a window, it will randomly select that space shifting what I am typing.  This also occurs within the same typing window inserting what i am typing into the middle of my text.  How on EARTH do I GET rid of this!?

Righty:

Keyboard:
Check out this site: http://www.aipainunavik.com/support/e_keyboard_win.html
It's a tutorial that goes through how to go about setting up different language settings (including the keyboard settings). The instructions are for Himalayan (?) keyboards - just use some common sense and pick the approproate stuff.

Mouse:
It's just "Touchpad", not a "Touchpad Mouse". Apart from that, I can't help at all.You say you're having difficutly turning off the touchpad? Maybe when you type, your hands accidently stimulate it, causing your second problem.I've been through the whole setup procedure before.  I"ve got languages set to Japanese, but just like in the setup example on the website, there is no Japanese available under keyboard layout IME.

about the touchpad, yes, occasionally it happens that the hand brushes the touchpad, but that doesn't explain the mouse clicking onto other typable areas.
I just want to disable the touchpad altogether.
whats the make of the laptop?  maybe there are different drivers needed for the laptop mouse/keyboard...or a m$oft update patch thats needed....SUGGESTIONS....In the laptop's BIOS, disable the 'PS2 port assigned to mouse', 'Assign IRQ12 to mouse', or 'onboard pointing DEVICE' options. Then use a USB mouse or trackball.

Or you can open the case and physically unplug the ribbon cable for the glidepad. You can then still use a mouse or trackball in the PS2 port on the back of the laptop.http://greggman.com/japan/xp-ime/xp-ime.htm

Do the reverse. Also, when I open CONTROL PANEL, the Picture Icons are on top of each other cause they are too big. Need to make icons a little smaller. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on September 12, 2008, 07:00:20 AM
Hmmmm....

In the Appearance Tab, change the Font Size to Normal.

Also in the Appearance Tab, click Advanced and look through the settings.Ok, but when I change the font size to normal, the pics do get smaller but my TEXT gets too small.

Can anyone get me back to normal?  Pleeeeze. What if you SELECT Large instead of Normal and Very Large?

Also, did you check out the Advanced button?I am on Large Fonts there. If I make them normal, the text gets too small.

The advanced seems to only be for changing the color. Quote from: MomNEEDShelp on September 12, 2008, 08:12:13 AM

Change the Item.  No, it's not ok. I still have LARGE ICONS which is MAKING my pages distorted.

I am scared to make all these changes since I know I was not in these places to begin with. I am scared I won't be able to get it back to at least viewable.

What would I change?? Text?   To what number?

I think I made my errors by going to ALL PROGRAMS ---> ACCESSORIES --> ACCESSIBILITY ---> ACCESSIBILITY WIZARD

Actually, if this is a RECENT problem, try performing a System Restore to a day before the problem started.

This would save you having to go through the settings yourself.

Solve : after switching computer off wont' turn on?

Hello,

I been using computer for a while but this problem is the hardest which I ever had.
So the problem is, I have turned off the computer using my hands, like I just have removed power wire straight from PSU and then after couple hours I tried to turn on computer but it won't happened. What I have to do, why my computer won't turn on ? Quote from: edzha90 on September 10, 2012, 12:21:57 PM

I just have removed power wire straight from PSU

This is not a good way to power down a computer. You could have created a surge or there may have been arcing as the circuit was broken. Either of these things could have destroyed the PSU or one or more sensitive components on the motherboard.

I TOTALLY agree with you, also the PSU is working (I have checked ) Quote from: edzha90 on September 10, 2012, 02:00:42 PM

How did you check?

I tried with different motherboard.Could you please PROVIDE a few more details. Make and model of the computer? Why did you find it necessary to shut down the way you did? Operating system? What if anything occurs when you try to boot the computer? Noises/Lights/beeps/etc?truenorth Quote from: edzha90 on September 11, 2012, 10:45:11 AM
I tried with different motherboard.

Sounds like you killed your motherboard, or one or more vital components on it.
One thing you could try is to pull the battery out of motherboard{very carefully , be sure you know how} or look for cmos jumper and that will reset bios to default. i have shut down computers many times by yanking powercord and it has never hurt them.  also check all connections , reseat ram and good luck!It has nothing to do with the CMOS battery... Quote from: kbit on September 11, 2012, 07:21:49 PM

Maybe you have been LUCKY doing that reckless and foolish thing; but the OP has not.
I have good news and bad news as well.
After couple days ago while computer was off I took off motherboard battery and then a BIT later I tried to start up, and you know it's working... I am surprised
but the bad news is, after I press power button once computer has turning off straight away but when I press power button again it's booting up WITHOUT any problem..

any ideas why I have press power button again ? Sounds like unreliable power supply.

Yeas it seems like, I tried an other PSU and it's starting up without second press, what I should do with that broken PSU ? is that still usable ? Quote from: edzha90 on September 15, 2012, 01:38:12 PM

Thanks.Have you installed and set up your sound card correctly?

Check the microphone is plugged in etc

Is it muted? Quote

Is there a way to make it so it stays working?

By handing out more information, yeah. When you first start up, open Volume Control or Playback Mixer, open the PROPERTIES menu, and select Record Mixer so you can control the sound INPUTS. Make sure your microphone, line in, wave player, and midi synth, as a minimum, are open in Record Mixer. Select the microphone to make it the current sound input.

If you have trouble making the Record Mixer hold the setting, try QuickMix, a little program that snapshots your sound card settings in script files that can be run to set the sound card to desired settings with single clicks of shortcuts.

Solve : File Saving/Naming Help?

Answer»

When I save a file in my Windows XP I like to save the entire file name in small-cap (i.e. - picture.jpg). However, the computer doesn't save it that way even though I type the name in entirely in small cap. It saves it usually as something like Picture.JPG .
Is there a setting in my windows xp that can I CHANGE to fix this? Thanks. It really depends on the program you're using. Whoever originally writes the program actually has full control over what format to save the files as, and the extension, and what case it's in, with absolutely no respect to the save dialog.

That said, if they're using a save dialog in the first place they will generally respect the user's choice. What program are you using to save the file?

ONE thing you can try is to type the filename with double quotes around it -- this can usually be used to force an unusual file extension (e.g. saving html files in notepad) and sometimes case. In your case, type with quotes "picturetest.jpg" in the save as box and see what happens.

Note that due to a windows limitation, if the file already exists when you save it, the case WILL NOT be changed. If the file doesn't exist already, it will be created with the case you, the user, (or really the program you're using) specifies. Thanks for your quick reply. In the Picture.JPG example, I was using Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 . When it is saved all in small cap, the file name gets automatically changed to a capital "P" and the extension often changes to upper case as well. Quote from: grappler on September 23, 2012, 09:33:35 PM

small-cap (i.e. - picture.jpg).

That's not "small-cap" - it's lower case. Small Caps is a font style where all the letters are capitals and shifted ones are LARGER.

Does the picture file you're saving already exist? Try saving as "picture2_test.jpg" (with the quotes) and post what the file ends up being named as.No always. If I create a document it will automatically capitalize the first letter of the name. If I download a photo or document from email it will capitalize the first letter. If I change the name from email when I save it, it will automatically capitalize it as well. You need to do some searching around in Options...
For example i found this little tidbit on the Elements WEBPAGE::

Quote
File Extension
Specifies an option for the three-character file extensions that indicate a file’s format: Select Use Upper Case to append file extensions using uppercase characters, or Use Lower Case to append file extensions using lowercase characters. Generally, it’s a good idea to keep this option set to Use Lower Case.

This tells me and confirms that it is indeed a option of the app itself...as Salmon and Techno suggested above and should be able to be changed to your liking. Quote from: patio on September 24, 2012, 10:27:05 AM

Solve : XP disk managament problem?

Answer»

Hi hoping someone can help me with this problem.
I was trying to create new multiple partitions on a 200GB hard drive using XP's disk management utility. I deleted the existing partition in order to create free space with which to allocate the new ONES. However when I did this although the partition was deleted it only showed me 128GB of free space and changed the capacity of the drive to 128GB. When I look at the drive in the BIOS it still shows a 200GB drive but XP refuses to see the full capacity. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanksis this the main hard drive or a backup.
Is the harddrive NTFS or FAT? FAT has a maximum drive size I think...

Is that TYPE of harddrive SUPPORTED by your computer's other hardware?

You could try reformatting and starting again from scratch maybe? But then you'll lose everything on the drive. Thanks for the replies but I DISCOVERED the problem.
Turns out XP doesn't support DRIVES larger than 128GB until you upgrade to SP1.
It works now but this still doesn't explain why the drive was working fine at 200 until I tried to format ??

Solve : erased file problem?

Answer»

Hello, I am stuck with a bit of a problem that I have never had to deal with before, so I am unsure of a solution. If anyone has any experience with the issue that I'm trying to work through, and/or experience with a good inexpensive or free software I could use, and could help talk me through the steps needed, it would be appreciated.

I have 2 computers that are both connected to each other on a network. Both computers are running Windows XP Professional, service pack 1.

The problem that i've run into falls into 2 seperate instances of file problems, and i'm unsure if either or both could be fixed. Initially, certain less experienced people did a reinstall of Windows Xp on both systems, and did not properly back up certain important files that I had on both computers. I am curious if there is any way to go about restoring those files that were overwritten by the new instal of Windows XP on my systems. Also, since their current installation, there have been a handful of needed files that have been accidently deleted by a few various users. I am curious if there is any way I can recover those files as well. I am fully willing to scrap the current install of Windows on both PC's if there is any way to recover either sets of files. I have backed up all currently needed information on both systems, so if needed I can easily considering wiping out the current OS on either comptuer. If anyone can help me with this problem, it would be greatly appreciated. What types of missing files? What error messages do you get? You could try reinstalling XP over the top of your current installation... that might work.Unless you formatted, most files not INSTALLED in Windows directories should STILL be present. To be more specific, they were home made picture and movie files that I had been intending to burn onto CD to save, and many of them are not replaceable.

I'm not RECIEVING any error messages, it's not a situation of missing system files, but personal picture and movie files, i.e. .jpg/.bmp/.mpeg/.avi files that were initially overwritten with a reinstall of Xp on both systems by someone who didn't know what they were doing and did not properly backup the files that were already on both hard drives. Likewise, the same person(unfortunately) has since deleted several files of the same sort of both hard drives on each system.

What i'm looking for is assistance with recovering either sets of files if that is at all POSSIBLE. In the first instance, they were files that were erased by a reinstall of Windows XP onto both systems that also involved the person reformatting each hard drive in the PROCESS. In the second instance, it was a result of this person simply deleting other files to the recycle bin and then emptying the recycle bin.

I'm looking for assistance with recovering either, or both sets of files, if that is in any way possible. I am more than willing to do whatever it would take, even if that requires trashing the current install of Windows on either computer to do so. These files were personal to me and most of them are not something I can easily replace. So if anyone can help in any way, it would be greatly appreciated.WinXP Clean Install - your files are still there.
WinXP Reinstall - your files are gone forever.

If you can't find them, they have been overwritten.Try this

Unless you pay, there are restrictions on what you can recover. Try the trial version and use it to see if your files are still there. If they are, try to recover them. The free trial only lets you undelete files up to a certain size. There's no gaurantee that it will recover your files, but you can at least try the free.http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm  may or may not do it. this on will but at a cost>http://www.disk-image.net/products.htm...for future use> upload those files to a website...some isp allow the user to have five websites or burn them to cd disks or have a spare hard drive...

Solve : copy files?

Answer»

sorry to sound dumb but I have had a system crash and need to re-install windows but i have some info and hardware on my computer that i want to save to disk. What commands do i have to use from ms-dos to get the ball rolling...The computer wont let me get into windows so it must be done in ms-dos mode type copy/? that will display help for the copy command.

use cd and cd\ and dir to get around

For example,

dir what's in the current directory
dir/p displayes in several pages, for when you have lots of files
cd windows takes you to the windows folder, if it's at your current directory. However if you're in say your DOCUMENTS folder, you will need to use cd\ to "backup"

Once you've found the file type

copy file.txt a:\saved

... for example

Also note that in DOS, you need to obey a special naming rule. Directorys can have 8 letters max and files 8 letters plus 3 for extantion. No spaces. For example, to get to program files from c:, you type

cd progra~1 the ~1 means that EXTRA letters were removed. It will usually be ~1, sometimes other numbers.

To change DRIVERS, type X: eg a: for floppy.

Trick: use *.xxx for all

eg copy *.txt a:\ copies all txt files to floppy.

Hope this helps. For most commands you can add /? for help.

1 - Erm, no, I don't think he mis-read "heeeeeeeelllllllllp". The point he was making was that you should be more descriptive in your title. Perhaps "Program prevents opening of files" would have been a better choice.

2 - Being new is not an excuse. A brain damaged squirrel could have worked out that someone won't know what the message is about from just "heeeeeeeelllllllllp" but would have more of an idea with my example. In short: Get a grip.

3 - Erm, paragraphs, full stops, sentences? Anyone?

Solve : XP Pro or Home?

Answer»

What's the difference between Pro and Home for XP?There is a big difference and there is the price to consider.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp

Take a look at the Elder Geeks SITE on Dynamic Disk usage with XP Professional too.So basically Pro is just Home + Stuff?

As for the price, I might be able to get for free/cheap Pro off a FRIEND who doesn't use it. It was just that I didn't want to get Pro and miss out on the Home stuff... but it seems my worries were in vain. You most likely will never notice you are using Professional. Especially not after installing SP2.How do you mean? Also, my main question I was building up to was too different a topic so I've asked it in a new one. Quote

You most likely will never notice you are using Professional. Especially not after installing SP2.

So you too noticed that it doesn't say Professional anymore.

I guess that the real Professionals are using "something else".I have ALWAYS used Home Edition, but I have seen it happen on another computer. Why would Microsoft replace the Professional screen? They even changed the colour of the loading bar to Blue, which was originally Pro's colour.Windows XP Comparison Guide

There was an article in the newspaper complaining about computers in movies. Apparantly, script writers can't be bothered to THINK up decent endings so someone pulls out a laptop or computer and can magically HACK their way into the main system bypassing passwords with override commands, or access top-secret FBI records, or find the names of all one-legged people in a city just like that.

Solve : DELETE*.*?

Answer»

HERE IS SOMETHING I WAS WANDERING ABOUT A FEW YEARS AGO A FRIEND OF MIINE TOLD ME ABOUT DELETE*.* FOR CLEANING OUT YOUR COMPUTER PROGRAMS. I WAS WANDERING WHAT THIS COMMAND DID AND WHY IT IS SO DANGEROUS TO USE. I TRIED IT ONCE AND THERE WENT EVERYTHING ON THE COMPUTER I HAD TO REPROGRAM MY SYSTEM AFTER THAT. MY FRIEND WANTS TO CLEAN OUT HIS SYSTEM BUT HE HAS LENOX I THINK THAT IS THE WAY YOU SPELL IT. WILL THIS COMMAND DO IT FOR HIM OR IS THERE ANOTHER COMMAND THAT WILL CLEAN THAT OPERATING SYSTEM OUT FOR HIM.If you want to remove everything from the coputer system and start again, I suggest formating it. This depends on your OS. On 98, you can insert your bootdisk, restart and at the dos promt type fdisk x: or FORMAT x: (can't remember which; replace x with the drive letter)

For example, fdisk c: or format c:

Warning: ALL data will be lost.

delete *.* is dangerous because it deletes all files, but I'd assume that some junk WOULD still be left, so use format to have a good clean start.

Usually, formatting is a last-resort. Is there any particular reason why you want to do this?It is probably dangerous for people who can not turn off the caps LOCK, and thus, are a bit simple.http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/

Solve : Win XP stuck in Partial Safe mode?

Answer»

Since running a chkdsk scan on my computer to try and fix the 100% cpu usage, I have upon reboot entered a state where I am in partial safe mode.

Some of my programs that normally load on startup are in fact loaded, but others are not. The screen resolution is correect for normal mode, but the colors are not... Basically the screen background is a brilliant WHITE. (perhaps classic?) The taskbar start button is white as well as the rest of the taskbar, and there is a weird font on it. There should be no virii as I had run extensive scans for malware and come up clean. MsConfig is set to normal bootup with the /safeboot switch NOT checked. I am at a loss as how to rectify this problem.1) There is no such thing as "partial safe mode"

2) Chkdsk would not fix the problem of a cpu spiking

3) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

4) Please explain EVERYTHING that led up to this in detail

5) EXACTLY how did you run checkdisk?

6) EXACTLY how did you scan for malware (and with what programs)?Actually i've seen those symptoms when chkdsk was interrupted...is that what happened ? ? Quote from: Allan on September 21, 2012, 06:00:37 AM

Hello and thanks Alan,
I have been working on this computer for some time now. The basic problem was that the cpu goes to and basically stays at 100% whenever I try to do anything. The usual offenders are MsMpEng.exe and iexplore.exe. Also running antivirus scans takes 4ever also as any file ACCESS pegs the cpu.

This problem surfaced some time ago and at the time was running AOL 9.0 software with the built in (or bundled) antivirus. the setup was just a pig. After running any and all AV scans both online and from rescue CD's with negative results, I uninstalled both the AOL email program and the antivirus program to try and rectify it. Apparently this uninstall was only partially successful as I soon found out when I unsuccessfully tried to install MSE. I then tried almost ALL of the free AV programs out there AVG,Avast,Avira,Dr Web, blah blah.

I uninstalled each and every one of them because if and when I was able to get them to run, there was no improvement in the speed of the computer. After MUCH work (and probably goofing things up) I uninstalled most of my software, removed printers, drivers and cleaned the registry with some well known programs. I FINALLY got the computer to allow me to install MSE and it works successfully with the exception of it hogging cpu cycles. Oh, I am sorry, I forgot to mention that I also downloaded and ran what I think each and every AV UNINSTALLER which finally enabled the successful installation of MSE.

So, on to today. Malwarebytes, SAS, TDDS killer, KAV online, Trend Micro Housecall, even Spybot S&D, Dr Web Cure-it, were all run in both normal and safe mode. There was one or two files found but mostly cookies were the culprits.

I thought maybe that after all the removal that I should run some of the system tools just to make sure everything is as it should be. that is why I ran checkdisk from the tools menu with options checked.
I beg to differ with you about the safe mode. Why I am saying that it is a partial safe mode, is because some of my startup programs are loaded and run successfully (which they didn't when I was in actual safe mode). But when I wanted to run SFC /scannow, I received the error message saying that the program cannot run in safe mode. The screen resolution is normal, but the color of the task bar, start button, and window boxes is white. Also the text is really generic and a bit larger than normal. But there is NO safe mode in any corner. And finally checking the services, I notice that many of them are not started and will not manually start usually giving me the message that they cannot run in safe mode.

The computer is a e-machines T-1600 with WinXPSP3, 1.5 gig ram and is networked via cable. My opinion is that way back that a corrupted Epson printer installation may have been the culprit in slowing things down, but that is long gone now. In fact, there should be no installed printers at all.

I do not have an XP install disk, and am not able to find the OEM restore disk either, so if I cannot get this up and running, I am SOL.
Thank you for your time in advance.
How does the system perform in safe mode? Quote from: patio on September 21, 2012, 06:52:03 AM
Actually i've seen those symptoms when chkdsk was interrupted...is that what happened ? ?

You know, you may be on to some thing here.... I started checkdisk and walked away for about an hour or two. When I returned, the computer had a blank screen and was beeping one long beep, over and over. I had to press and hold the power key to get it to stop. When I restarted the computer, the checkdisk screen came up and said that it had completed successfully, so I discounted the issue as being a glitch. Hmmm, makes me think. I looked at the crucial memory advisor and I see the computer has one stick of ram being a pc2700 and the other being a pc3200. They are both recognized and are working, but I wonder? Running the registry cleaner may very well have contributed to - or even caused your problems. See if there is an undo function. Quote from: patio on September 21, 2012, 09:55:18 AM
Then it isn't the RAM...next suspect would be the HDD...did it pass chkdsk ? ?

well, like I said there were some corrections noted but the result upon startup was successful, whatever that means in windows parlance.  As I said, it's possible the registry cleaner deleted some key files. It happens - especially with jv16.

Without an XP CD you're going to have a problem. At some point you may very well need to do a repair install or a clean install.

For now though, please look in Device Manager - any yellow or red symbols?

And please try a clean boot / selective startup (msconfig - general tab - selective startup - uncheck all 4 boxes and reboot). What happens?

Solve : XP and 98 Together?

Answer»

I'm planning on partitioning my current Win98 harddrive and having both 98 and XP...

My friend has an XP Pro editon which I might be able to get cheap. But it's one of those upgrade things. Would it install on a blank partition? Or would I have to mess arround installing Windows 98 on it and upgrading?

Also... (sorry but I don't know much about this kind of computing) would I have to do anything special to set up a duel-boot kind of thing? Don't know if I'm using the correct terms here but I want to have both XP and 98... automatically boot to XP but be able to boot into 98 if I have to.

If I make my partition NTFS, would it be readable in 98? If not, do I get an obvious option to keep it as FAT32? (I mean do I get asked in setup which I want or do I have to look for the option a bit deeper. I don't want to miss it by accident.)

If I install XP, is there a way to transfer my 98 settings? Or will I have to do them again? Will I need to reinstall my programs and utilities? I mean, if their information is stored on the registry on the 98 partition, can I copy over my old registry?

Phew that's a lot. Any help really appreciated.Just how cheap is cheap? http://www.buysoftware.ws/pd_microsoft_windows.cfm

I have triple boot:  Win2k, Win98SE, WinXP-Pro.  All are FAT32.  Win2k is "master" which sees all partitions, Win98 cannot "see" Win2k or WinXP, WinXP cannot "see" Win2k or Win98.  All 3 bootable partitions share 3 other partitions:  DATA, DOWNLOADS, JUNK(swap files, temp files, cookies).  Bootable partitions must start within the 1024 cylinder BOUNDARY, so they need not be very large, Mine are 4GB, 2GB, 5GB, for Win2k, Win98, WinXP.

1.  Since the WinXP version you have is an upgrade, you can copy the existing Win98 partition to the new WinXP partition and then do the upgrade.  Upgrades will not install on blank partition.
2.  Yes.  I recommend PartitionMagic/BootMagic...not required...but makes it a lot easier.
3.  No.
4.  Partition Magic allows copying/resizing of partitions without loss of data.
5.  Upgrading will keep all Win98 settings.
6.  No, not if you perform upgrade.  Some utilities might have to be reinstalled.  You'll know when you try to run them.
7.  Registry configurations are different.
Hang on a minute what happened to the all inspirng winxp...why is you mate going BACKWARDS in time win98? wait for the answer  its going to be  a good un...well, not to barge in on the issues or anything, but you can have your xp partition ntfs, while your win 98 partition is FAT 32, then you have the best of both worlds, the stability for xp, and a partition that nwill work for 98, and my shared partition is fat 32 for compatibility with both.
to each his own though.

If you mean why doesn't my friend want his XP anymore? Well, he has two main computers. One is an Atari (seriously) and his PC isn't that much BETTER. Need I say anymore? Whether you choose to format to FAT32 or to NTFS is a matter of drive size. FAT32 is NOT supported on large drives. So quoting small drives and FAT32 is acceptable only with new system usingh new software and new hardware using NTFS is preferable to using FAT32.

So what size of drive are you using?

My 80Gb drive has four drive partitions all formatted to NTFS, C: = 8192Mb , D: = 8192Mb , E: = 3072Mb and F: is the rest of the drive.

The drive utilities run better on NTFS and if you are going to use XP PROFESSIONAL and want to use all of the features which come with XP Pro you'll need to format to NTFS anyway.

See: http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm & http://www.ntfs.comMy main harddrive is 40gb. I was thinking of partitioning off a small ammout (perhaps 4 gb?) for the XP install... as the rest of the drive has all my programs and stuff installed already. I want to keep my main OS and my programs seperate so I'm less likely to lose them incase of a tragedy.

Solve : networking cable?

Answer»
Okay I'm still trying to network two computers together. I have EVERYTHING set up as far as ICS and file and print sharing. I bought an ethernet cable and turns out one computer has the ethernet slot and the other does not. Does this mean I don't have a networking card in that computer or is a crossover cable a different size and can connect in the telephone slot next to the modem slot? Or will I have to by a networking card? I took the case off the computer and the only card I seen was the modem card, it connects to the internet ok. How can I check to see if a networking card is installed? It is an Aptiva computer. Or is there another way to connect two computers together like with some sort of USB cable. And if I do need a networking card installed in the other computer what type do I need? They sell them cheap all day on ebay. Help Please! My husband is getting inpatient because I take all the computer time.  :-/ Can't afford to take to shop for this.

Thanks merlin_2. Well I typed in msinfo32 and it said could not find or wrong path. I will probably never get dsl and I am in need of another printer with a scanner and copier on it, so I'm going to try and connect serial port and by a new printer with usb on it. I think this is what you meant. Wish me luck. If it doesn't work I will be back.
Thanks
Well that didn't work either. What am I doing wrong? I hooked a regular cable to the printer ports.

Probably no network card, just modem card.  You can purchase network card for $20 at BestBuy, CircuitCity, OfficeMax, Office Depot, Staples.
See following for how to tell difference:
Telephone and ethernet connectors

They do also make USB crossover cables.  I've got one, never opened the box.  Ethernet is easier, especially with a router.

Okay, Merlin I did all the connection stuff in the direct cable connection. Set up both computers with all the right protocols and connected computers with cable and set up one computer as host and one is guest. STILL NO CONNECTION. It keeps saying when I start up the host and then the guest . Is the host computer set up and are the cables connected in port. Everything is right I don't know what is wrong. I'm now pulling out hair!
Thankswhich operating systems are you using ...and there is no need to end up bald...as i mentioned in the FIRST relpy post option one you are not retricted.......take the dcc cable back when you get the chance to do so...slap the old man and tell him its his fault....and pickup a network card and cat 5 cables and a router if needed...which is handy if you wish to expand the network..       (did you read the website given properly......what error messages are on the screen) at slap me for sugested the dcc.. and keep smiling forget the heart failure...config/settings...list them ...
Cannot connect to the host computer. Make sure you have run direct cable connection on the host computer and you have connected your cable to both computers.
Thats what the error message says. I have done everything like the website said and just don't know. I guess I will have to get a network card and try and put it in myself. What is a router? can I just get a crossover cable ? My computers are side by side. I have to get this thing up and running for my husband, because he can't have my computer time. Thanks again. Trying not to have a heart attack. Already had open heart seven months ago.Oh, one of the computers is running windows 98 and the other windows 95. Is the DCC cable the same as a printer cable? That is what I'm using. Can't slap the old man for nothing.
Thanks Quote
.... Is the DCC cable the same as a printer cable? That is what I'm using...

No.
DCC=Direct Cable Connection
This is not a printer cable.  They do make special cables that connect to computer printer port.
leave the old man alone ok what you needed was option one..forget the dcc cable your choice if you recall.....option one........one nic card +cat5 cables...one pc is used as the server connected to the modem in the pc next is a nic which is in the pc coming out.......to a router..in/out to the pc ..........via cat5 cables.....via nic via pcs..and thats its...........think of it like a telephone extension....one phone upstairs on phones down stairs...the router ...does the  same
Okay, Thanks I'll have to find that cable and try again. Thanks.ask someone thats local ......who has network pcs..or try a cyber cafe......and sorry for the joke>... in bad taste...hope all is well..
Okay I'll see what I can find. That's okay I like jokes.
Thanks.

Solve : Help disabling CHKDSK?

Answer»

For the past several days on turning on the computer, running windows XP, it begins to run CHKDSK on my slave drive, D.  Why would it do that and How do I stop it from starting up each time?  Thanks so much!Properly shut down your computer the next time you power off. From time to time, mine does this for no apparant reason.  Only explanation:  It's Windows.MalikTous said on another post which MIGHT help:

Open your MSDOS.SYS file in Notepad (you may have to go into your Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View tab and disable all file, folder, and extension hides to get to it, then uncheck the Hidden and Write Protect check boxes in the right-click Properties of the file to edit it). It should have the line

Autoscan=

and an option number. 0 prohibits automatic ScanDisk on error reboot, and 2 allows automatic ScanDisk on error reboot only. Change the number, I recommend 2.From the XP Help and Support (START Menu)

SUMMARY
When you run the command CHKDSK /F /R from the command line, Windows asks if you want to schedule CHKDSK to run the next time the system is restarted. This article describes how, in the event you choose YES, you can subsequently prevent CHKDSK from running the next time you start the server.
RESOLUTION
To stop the execution of CHKDSK /F /R, you must edit the registry using Registry Editor.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

To stop the execution of CHKDSK /F /R, take the following steps: 1. Run the Registry Editor(Regedt32.exe).
2. Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following subkey:
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
3. Change the BootExecute entry from:

autocheck autochk * /r\DosDevice\C:

To:

autocheck autochk *
If you have scheduled CHKDSK for MULTIPLE volumes, there will be an autocheck entry for each volume. Delete the string from the BootExecute registry value for each volume you do not want CHECKED.

This procedure will reset the default string, and CHKDSK /F /R will not run on reset.

Hope that this help you.
Alternatively try Diskeeper 9 Professional's Frag-Shield and see if your Master File Table on that drive is big enough.

I had to pad out the MFT on one of my drives recently. As raptor has stated and over missed by PEOPLE again ...whossh...shutdown the pc properly...windows will  execute the disk checker program  on startup witch is linked to the system file checker program it does this to check if there have been any alterations to the auto exe bat /boot ini files...to turn of a pc  start/run shutdown... I have never seen this happen on my computer. The last time chkdsk was ran was due to someone improperly disconnecting my external HDD.

Solve : computer looks like safe mode?

Answer»

I formatted my hard drive and re-installed windows 98. Now my computer operates like in the safe MODE i.e. mouse movement is slow and only displays 640 x 480. I tried loading the monitor.*inf FILE from the restoration CD, but windows tells me it is not the correct driver for my hardware. I load the driver anyway and then I can change the display settings. But when I restart the system, it GOES back to 640 x 480. I check the hardware under device manager and the correct monitor is listed under monitors, and the correct driver under display adapters. I don't know what else to do. Could something be wrong with my graphics accelerator card? It's built into the motherboard. You might need to update your drivers for the monitor issue. In the device manager, right click on the monitior, and click update drivers. For the slow mouse movement, it could be that you don't have enough memory on your computer. Do you think that you could give me some more info. on your computer such as memory, etc.? More information would help.      (Make sure that when you try to update your drivers, that you are connected to the internet)

[glb]Flame[/glb]Your are using a driver not required for your computer to properly function. The monitor driver is useful if you can find it, but not necessary if the monitor is Plug and Play.

What you need are videocard drivers. Obtain these from the manufacturer of your videocard. Quote

Raptor.

Hey thanks for the speedy replies. Here's the deal. Afterinstalling Win98, I go to mycomputer, CNTRL pnnl, dsply, settings, advanced. I then click the adapter tab and Standard PCI Vga adapter is listed. Under the monitor tab is listed PnP monitor. I checked the manufacturer's website (Gateway) and they said that after a CLEAN install, I have to manually install the monitor file from the system restoration CD. My computer is: Gateway, PII, 300mHz, 5GB HD. Thanks.Hey thanks for the speedy replies. Here's the deal. Afterinstalling Win98, I go to mycomputer, cntrl pnnl, dsply, settings, advanced.
