Solve : Operating System being compromised XP x64 and win7x64?

Answer»

Computer: Nvidia XFX 780i 3-way SLI  64 bit mother board, Core 2 duo E8500 extreme processor, 2 x Geforce  XFX 9600 GSO 768mb VIDEO cards 8gb ram, 4 x 2gb Corsair XMS2 8500 series, 1 Maxtor 250 gb hard drive, 1 Seagate 1.5 tb hard drive, 1 LG blu-ray burner, 1 LG BD-ROM, 1 Cooler Master 650 watt POWER supply, in a Thermal take tower.    If I get mouse freeze, or online video freeze and have to push the restart button for any reason, 95% of the time the operating system is compromised! XP Pro x 64 service pack 2 or Win 7 x 64 home premium. With XP, a reinstall/repair brings it back okay. Win 7 start-up repair doesn't repair it, thus having to format the hard drive and do a clean install. I'm having to do this this almost on a daily basis, if I want to use my computer. If there is a hardware problem, how do I diagnose it? I updated the BIOS, but it didn't seem to help. Can anybody help with this nightmare? I sure would APPRECIATE it.       Thank you David Bradley                                                               Well, not an easy answer. The XP 64 bit was a oddball OS that only a few had.
From personal experience with the standard 32 bit XP. I know that you can put it on a drive and then install Windows 7. But even so, it has drawbacks. The best option is to have to separate hard drives.
There is reason to think that the XP 64 bit will ruin the Win7 64 bit boot loader. If you have to do any kind of repair that writes to the boot area of the hard drive. XP overwrites some information needed by Windows 7. This is because XP is not aware that Windows 7 defines the boot are stuff a bit differently.  Which is is enough reason to want two hard drives.
That is all I can think  of now. Sounds like the 64 bit drivers are not installed properly in each OS...it does make a difference.
If that's not the case then it's most likely a hardware not an OS issue...Operating systems are on separate hard drives. How do I troubleshoot a hardware issue???You can have two or more OS on a PC with separate physical hard drives. The BIOS has a boot MENU for mufti boot installations.
Most modern Desktop motherboards allow:

  • Boot from floppy drive.
  • Boot from CD/DVD drive.
  • Boot from USB device.
  • Boot from network.
  • Boot from first HDD.
  • Boot from second HD.
To invoke the menu you have to hit a F key before POST closes.
Maybe F12.

The boot from network makes you PC into a discloses dummy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diskless_node
Diagnostics can run over the network.
In the meantime if you are sure all your 64bit drivers are proper for hardware you can check the following:

MemTest for the RAM...follow the guide for creating a bootable CD...let it run at least 1 hour...preferably 2.
Any errors at all and you have a bad stik of RAM.

For the HDD's DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site...again follow the guide to create a boot CD.
Check back with your results and we can go from there.

Solve : Device drive letters keep changing?

Answer»

I am having troubles with drive letters changing on me. I thought the Drive Management (DM) solution would work every time but not so!
DM's "change drive letters and paths" (CDL) sometimes doesn't let me change to the letter I want. I have many links that refer to drive E: (Elements). With E: pointing to another drive I get about 10 shortcut icons on my desktop. When I boot up and the letter is changed to say H: I try CDL and it doesn't give me E: as a choice. This happens about 30% of the time. I shut down, remove some drives and reboot. Sometimes I can get CDL to give me E: for my Elements drive and I am ok. Today I tried rebooting 3 times and the FIRST two kept my Elements drive at E: But the 3rd time it was changed to some other letter.

I found a dos program (service program) CALLED DISKPART which runs in XP to allow me to list, select, remove and assign letters. Sometimes the letter E: was assigned to a different drive and I have to remove E: so it's free, then assign Elements to E: and I change the removed drive to another free letter. Most of the time that works but XP may not keep it when I reboot.

I have tried to rearrange the position of my USB connected drive to see what that does to keep my Elements at E: over a reboot but it only frustrates me.

NOTE:
Is there a way to seek out all the shortcuts that use E: and change them to something like Q: and get the assignment of Elements to Q:? MAYBE by picking the last letter, XP won't change it to something else.

My device assignment problem is with USB connected devices. I have 2 USB in the front of the Dell and 6 in the back. I connect one of the rear USB ports to a powered 10 port USB expander. This gives me 17 USB ports to connect my devices to. Currently I use 1 front port, 5 rear ports and 5 ports of the expander for my devices.
Does anyone know how XP scans the ports to assign letters?

Dell Dimension 460i, XPPro SP3, 3GB Ram, 11 external devices, Lots of disk space.
Thanks

... My device assignment problem is with USB connected devices....
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.htmlMr. Hacker, thanks for the USBDLM link. It worked! It took a while to understand what it did (plenty) compared with my small problem. I now have my Elements disk permanently (sic) associated with E:. Until I found out what to do with USBDLM I could not get 2-3 reboots without XP moving Elements to some other letter (mount point). It was all the more painful because I had about a dozen shortcuts referencing E: to RUN programs.

The common solution of running Computer Management and having it change a letter did not work 95% of the time. It would give me a choice of F: to Z: for a new letter but not E:.
It's not a "User Friendly" installation, but it's the only thing I've found that works.  Especially good for card READERS which Windows assigns drive letter for every slot, even with no card installed.

Solve : Deleting User Accounts at log on screen? Can I??

Answer»

I've got a couple of these drives in my other post, that work ok, but they are small drives, some 20 gig, 10 gig a 4 or less. A couple are 40 gig, some 60's, a 120 Gig and a 250, which are ok as well. The smaller ones have jurasic Operating Systems like Win 98SE, 2000 and some XP.

They go to the startup screen and have a user account log on icon, typically Admin, Mary, Bob, Fred, Joes computer and guest etc.
It varies with whichever drive is in the DESKTOP.

What happens if I delete the User Accounts for all users on a drive?

Will it just go through the post and straight into the Start screen?

Can I bypass the user account log on screen at all WITHOUT deleting the UA's?

Playing with these drives gives me a good chance to try things like this, because I dont really CARE if I stuff something up. I can always format them and plonk them in ANOTHER desktop as a slave.

Thank you for your input. ImnoGuru. In Windows XP all user accounts on on the same drive or partition unless somebody has MADE some alteration. And users that have little data take very little space on the drive. If you want, you can reduce the number of users, but that is not what I recommend. At some time you may want have a friend use your computer. Let him use another account and he will not mess your settings.

But it is your choice, not mine. So here you go:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282866
How to automatically log on to a user account in Windows XP
Read it over. First you remove the other accounts and turn off the guest. Then do as the above article says.

Solve : Internet running slow?

Answer»

Whats causes a slow internet. Page down loads take forever. Often time the computer freezes. Video is very choppy too.......how do i fix this STUFF !?!?!?!?!?!?!Download, install, and run CCleaner's Cleaner tool, not the Registry tool.  The installation of CCleaner will install a Google toolbar if you do not unselect that option during the installation.  Here's a reference on installing and using CCleaner: http://www.howtoanswer.com/how-to-install-ccleaner--113.html
With all due respect to soybean, there is nothing that ccleaner does that effects performance.

You said the pages load slowly then you said the computer freezes. Those are two entirely different issues. Please take your time and explain IN DETAIL exactly what is going on. Also, has it always been this way or did it start recently? If the latter, what is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? Quote from: Allan on January 14, 2013, 05:38:34 AM

Yes, there is.  An accumulation of browser cache can affect browser performance.  CCleaner clears browser cache and, if the user uses multiple browsers, clears cache for all browsers at one time.  I've never thought of using a third party app to empty the cache, but okay.... And I think it's worth asking if we're talking about more than one browser, don't you?You have a slow connectionRe the last==while it CAN be a cause of the O/P's problem i highly doubt it in this case.To me it is obvious that this is something new that the poster is experiencing. I don't believe they would have been enduring a slow ISP speed and suddenly decide to worry about it. However having said that welcome aboard and hope you find your time here mutually enjoyable.truenorthTo Allan:

I ll give you and EXAMPLE. When I go to webpage and clink on a link. The new link will open up in a window and load the page and all its data pictures more links etc. I may click on another link within that window and the new window will start to open and some data will load but not completely and then the page will just FREEZE. No new hardware or software hase been added recently........HELP ...Does this happen with all browsers or only one? If you haven't tried other browsers, please do. And which browser are you using now?I am using the Firefox/ Mozilla.try disabling all add ons in firefox. I tried firefox for a while and it worked great a first but it got worse over time and even tried to download malware to my computer. i think it was the add-ons { they must not vet them proper}I ran CCleaner,  Malwarebytes,  Superanti-Spyware, Microsoft Security Essentials, now you want me to DISABLE Mozilla/Firefor Add-ons ??   Sure......... but where do I start ??

Before you disable anything, try Internet Explorer or any other browser as a test. Do you have the same problem with other browsers as with Firefox?I am going to try Internet Explorer as a test.....will get back to you with results,  Thanks !!!!

Solve : I need to compare features of the XP versions?

Answer»

Could you please direct me to TUTORIALS or web pages where I can compare detailed specifications and features of the two operating systems:

(1) WINDOWS XP Home Edition

(2) Windows XP Professional Edition

Thank you.A reference: http://winsupersite.com/article/windows-xp2/windows-xp-home-edition-vs-professional-edition-whats-the-difference-127994I am sorry I didn't mention it, but I have been to this web page. I need something more detailed. More like documentation.

Thank youWhat specific features do you need comparisons for ? ?
That being said the MS site probably has what you're looking for...Yes, I got much more details from two links I got for MS. Thank you for the suggestion. If there are any tutorials in this forum for XP, please direct me to them.

Regards.Tutorials on what? Specifically, what is it you're trying to find out? CHANCES are some of our members will be able to answer your questions.I see your point. Tutorials are made for a particular aspect or feature.

I am using Windows 7 in my laptop. I am hoping to install Windows XP in my new desk top. So I don't have a question yet.

Thank you,

Regards. If it is a NEW system, chances are it doesn't support XP. You WOULD need XP compatible drivers and some of the HW may not work with XP at all.Thank you for pointing this out. I didn't realize it but should be OK because the main board is an Asus P5LD2, unused but many years old. I have the user manual and ACCORDING to that it will work.

Kind regards.

Solve : 'avwave'?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm trying to work out what's wrong with a friends pc - in windows XP, it runs REALLY slowly (it's a p4, pretty new and fast). upon opening up the TASK MANAGER, it shows a process 'avwave' operating, which starts using all the available memory. if you stop the process, it runs OK, but if not it slows down and eventually CRASHES. Any SUGGESTIONS as to what it is?? I've tried the usual virus/adaware software to scan for everything, checked all programs installed and can't find it.

Cheers

Solve : Multimedia Audio Controller Not working?

Answer»

Recently installed Windows XP Pro SP3 on a computer that used to have vista.
Wiped and did a clean install but now it keeps saying my multi media audio controller is inactive

When I attempt to install realtek Drivers I get a Stop Error and it says that the drivers are not a "windows LOGGED?" tested file and refuses to install.

Been trying to find a fix for this. I downloaded drivers specific for my soundcard as well but the MultiMedia Audio Controller still won't work.
Are there other driver alternatives to Real Tek? and if so where can I find them?

Thanks for any help in advance. Are you sure it's a RealTek card ? ?
RealTek is mostly onboard sound chips...if you have a card you should be getting the driver from the card Manuf. site.Thats what I am slightly confused by, the Sound Card is NOT realtek, but the drivers for it are up to date. and it shows so under device manager.

Is the Multimedia Audio Controller that is showing errors, What i do not know is that actually a manufacturer specific hardware installed in the computer ( and if so i don't know how to find out the who manufactured it, doesn't seem to say after a Belarc scan )
If its software device I don't know what to use other then RealTek?Some details about my computer.

Solve : XP Login Freeze after prank?

Answer»

ok guys, you've saved me before, see what you can make of this one:

I'm working on a windows XP machine that will no longer reach the login screen on bootup. I'm not sure of the exact cause, but I know what it probably has to do with. My friends were trying to play a prank on someone, and they needed to login to the prankee's computer but didn't know the PASSWORD. Using a boot diskette and a program called NTFSDOS, they accessed and copied the computer's "SAM" file onto their disk. When the machine was rebooted it loaded through the big XP logo, and then shows a blank BLACK screen with a mouse cursor. It does not show the login screen. The mouse MOVES and the NUMLOCK light works. Any ideas?

reboot pc...and hit the f8 keyand chose the last good config...We TRIED that, but to no avail. Same symptoms. On a brighter note, it boots properly in safe mode, but this is of no help to us because we still dont know the password.the passwords are listed in the sam file...are you password cracking...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q314503&ID=KB;EN-US;q314503That was the plan, but now we just want it to boot properly.http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm#How%20to%20Repair%20Windows%20XP%20by%20Installing%20Over%20top%20of%20Existing%20Setup:Passwords are there for a reason.. If you don't know what you're doing, don't even attempt to?From what I understand, you copied the SAM file?  Can you copy it back to the original location?

Solve : build a new computer?

Answer»

need SUGGESTIONS on how to do this. first of all can I use my old case and just gut it and buy new stuff?Yes.

Just keep in mind wheter it's AT or ATX. But that is only important when it comes to motherboard and PSU.You'd be surprised at the amount of stuff in your old PC that could be re-used. The monitor, keyboard, mouse, PSU, case, CD/Floppy Drives and USB/Firewire cards would be okay to use in a newer PC, although it may not exactly be cutting edge. Do triple check though!

The existing Hard Drive may also be used. Maybe not so obvious, but it is possible to put in two (or even more) hard drives into the one PC. You could easily fit the existing one alongside a higher capacity one, which may help when it comes to transferring data. Thanks for the tips on this subject. to get RIGHT to the point what its doing is when you fire it up. since it's a pentuim 3 with 233 Ghz bought in 96 and old I was getting rid of all the junk on it with the spyware remover and then tried to get rid of the virus's. ...since it's a pentuim 3 with 233 Ghz bought in 96 ....

It's a Pentium 2, 233MHz. That was the first of the Pentium II's.  Therefore, you do have an ATX motherboard and an ATX power supply.  Power supply probably not be large enough for a Pentium 4 or Athlon.  A larger REPLACEMENT should fit right in.
Thanks for all your suggestions today. will go HOME here after work and try it. will let you know tomorrow how it works and if not will give you better details of the tower.did the reboot to the scandisk but got the error message that I don't have the himem.sys file on here for whatever reason. If you have done a clean install as opposed to a repair , the hard drive has been wiped clean. Did you get all the available updates from M/S after you formatted ?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q816405The same thing happened to me a couple months ago. At first, like you, i just simply reformatted my harddrive. Then, it happened again MERE weeks after i had refformated the hd. This time, however, i went to this site: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ and downloaded adaware se (the free version). It caught about 300 spyware bots on my computer. I deleted them all, and my internet worked. Good luck!what is ur os? where did u get ur computer from? maybe the os is from a pirated cd. last time i had a pirated os (WITHOUT knoing.... grrrrrrrrrrrr) and my computer kept restarting and couldn't run properly.Thankx u guys! The ad aware download really helped. I reformatted again and went online once, and I already had 19 items on my computer! That's a handy tool. Most likely tracking cookies. Thanks to Internet Explorer. Use Mozilla Firefox and configure it properly.

Yeah, after i got all the all the spyware off my pc, I SWITCHED to Firefox, and i haven't got any spyware on my computer since.Yes, same with me. Firefox ROCKS!

Solve : clipbrd.exe -- continuous screenshots?

Answer»

I am running XP-Sp 2 but this problem started before SP2 was installed.
I am unable to paste anything but a current SCREENSHOT due to my clipboard being filled with screenshots.

This happens INTERMITTENTLY and at different capture rates but 90% of the time it is taking about 2-3 screenshots per second, even in safe mode.

I have been running updated Nortons, Spybot, Ad-Aware se, P-Cillin Housecall etc. all to no avail.
I have tried removing the print screen key too.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. To me smells of a usage logging tool. They're normally used by paranoid parents and draconian bosses to see exactly what their kids/employees are doing. Essentially, it sounds like a fancier keylogger type app.

Normally though, an spyware remover will flag this up. It might be worth getting a HijackThis! log from you at this point, to see what is running. Click Here to download HT!. Run it, get a log FILE of what is running and post it here.

For God's sake, don't do anything else in that app! Most of it will probably be legit! Here it is, it takes some quick work to paste this in.

Solve : Peripheral Identification?

Answer»

I have 2 computers linked in a LAN through a router. Both are using XP. I had some diffidulty sending up the network, but it is working well now. I am able to communicate between computers, share files, etc. Computer A has identified the networked computer as "Drive K"; there are several USB ports, and CD & DVD drives which are on Computer A. There do not seem to be any conflicts in resources nor IRQs.

The problem I am having is that when I plug in anything into one of the USB ports, that device is identified by the computer as "Drive K", and the network connection to Computer B is lost. The newly connected device works without any problems.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is occurring, or suggestions as th how it can be fixed?I'd change the MAPPING from K: to Z: for the networked shared drive, then problem solved, no more USB attached storage stomping on same driver letters. I ran into a similar issue a while back with a card reader with a client and mapped drives. Moved the mapped drives to X: Y: and Z: and problem solved. This sounds as if it would work, but I'm not sure how this can be done. When I go to Disk Management I find that the mapped network drive is not shown.  If I connect a USB device it is shown, but the mapped drive is not.

How can the mapped network drive designation be changed? If this is a flash drive being plugged that's causing this there is a simple solution...
Open the flash drive in Disk Management...right clik it and select Properties...
Give it a Volume Label...can be any name you WANT.
Then ASSIGN it any drive letter you like above K...because it now has a Volume Label it will retain the drive letter...even when moved to any other PC...so choose the drive letter wisely. The problem involved more than a flash drive. HOWEVER, using a flash drive as a test I followed your suggestion. I didn't assign a volume label, I only changed the drive letter. The flash drive didn't retain the drive designation when used on another computer, but the problem has ended. Now, when I connect a device, flash drive or other, the computer automatically assigns a letter to it. Originally, the mapped network drive was "K". It is still "K". The drive letter I assigned to the flash drive was "L". This letter is no longer recognized by the computer. Instead the computer calls the first device connected to a USB port "M", and subsequent devices in order.

I am left with drives "F","G","H", and "I" which were the USB ports, but now cannot be connected to.

It's all very strange, but at least I can use my mapped network drive again.

Thanks.
F,G,H and I sound like a card reader...they wouldn't be assigned drive letters unless something was in use if they were simply USB ports...
If you don't want to try the suggestion that's fine...I hadn't thought about that, but I now think you're right. They are card readers (which I don't use).

Thanks for your help and insight into the problemAnytime...

Solve : TrayApp problem...HELP!!?

Answer»

My Mom's COMPUTER, it's new, (august 2004) HP/Compaq Presario  nicely loaded, and she recently started getting this new pop up window that won't go away.  It says, and I quote: "The path 'c:\hp\tmp\src\scancam\Hpsw\Setup\TrayApp\TrayApp.msi ' cannot be found.  Verify that you have access to this location and try to find the installation package "TrayApp.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product TrayApp"

Neither she nor I know what the heck this means.  Obviously neither of us are very computer savvy, so if you could speak slowly we'll be able to hear you BETTER
She can open an IE window over it and can surf the web via Road Runner with it going on, so it is just a nuisance on the desktop.  What do you advise?  Thanks in advance!!do you have a hp scanjet printer/...disable the splash screen..type msconfig...in the RUN box..click the startup tab..and untick the hp scnjet printer..you can still access it form either a short cut on the desktop or via programs..Nope, no HP Scanjet printer, it's a 3yr old Epson printer.  There is a program in the start menu that is something like HP Photo something or other.  I know my Mom will not have a digital camera in her lifetime, much LESS on this computer, should we uninstall that program?  no need to uninstall it just disable it..play safe ...for now... did some one have an hardware instaled on the this pc? webcam/scanner...>scancam or is hp spying on you?>http://www.research.compaq.com/SRC/org/theory.html

Solve : Strange......?

Answer»

I just bought a new emachine a week ago, I just got cable internet last night.  I'm running winXP home.

everything on the computer ran fine all week.  The first thing I did when I got internet was UPDATE virus files and did full scan....then everything was still fine.....

I browsed the internet for several hours last night, nothing major...

this morning I downloaded an "mp32wav" CONVERTER from download.com....everything worked great...

I rebooted the computer and now the sound still works, but when I click on the volume CONTROL in the task bar, the slider is all the way to the bottom and when I try to drag it back to the top, it automatically goes back to the bottom....

What the heck?...this is the strangest thing I've encountered....I tried everything and can't get it working...I know the sound still works cause when I drag the bar to the top I can hear the "Ding"....

What the heck is going on here?it may cause a problem with media player...use the system restore...option...or type DXDIAG in the run  box for more info or uninstall the last program it maybe a conflict..and em4me...is ok?..forget dell the pc soap of the year...followed bt hp..JOKE? can explain to detailed....curious..aint it..

Solve : Neat Registry Hack...?

Answer»

Picture the scene. You are defragging that 160 GB hard DRIVE of yours and, after an eternity you reach 98% through. You watch in anticipation... 99% now... and it's just about finished...

... And then the screensaver kicks in, resetting the whole process. Bummer eh?

Well, to solve this, you could restart in safe mode. Of course, safe mode can be a bit of a nuisance. Or you could just clean boot by running msconfig, but that's a bit tedious if you like to defrag often.

Instead, why not add this to the registry to disable the screensaver whilst defrag runs?

Go to Start > Run and type in 'regedit', and then navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets'. Add a key called 'Defrag' and then another key underneath it called 'Settings', both by right clicking and selecting the appropriate option.

Then, SIMPLY add a new String called 'DisableScreenSaver' and give it a value of 'YES'. No more screensaver... at least when defrag is going.

Remember, this only works if the only interruption is from the screensaver. You'd best disable virus scanners and the like too.

Hope you find this helpful! I find EndItAll a valuable tool for stripping out all unnecessary processes when I do monthly disk maintenance.

I'll first do an offline virus scan (Trend MICRO Housecall), then run my resident virus killer (updated), then update and run Spybot and AdAware. Finally I empty the temp directory manually and run Disk Cleanup, then unplug the LAN cable and run EndItAll.

I run the ScanDisk, then the Defrag, with little or no interference from Systray and Explorer and similar 'necessary' items in the TASK list. I don't use a screen saver, but EndItAll shuts those down too.

Scandisk (Win9x) and Defrag run faster if I use EndItAll on a normal startup vice using safe mode, because the HD ATAPI drivers are still up. Safe mode slows drive access. I unplug the LAN cable because EndItAll shuts off the virus scanner and software firewall, but not the LAN card drivers.

If you are using NT/2K/XP, use the Disk Error Check with Freespace Check on and reboot to run it before you unplug the LAN and run EndItAll and Defrag.

When you have completed ScanDisk and Defrag, reboot and reconnect the network.set the screensaver to none in the display/properties..Why'd you need a screensaver? Quote

Why'd you need a screensaver?

I don't. Many people like them though, hence this tip. PLUS I had 99 posts and seeing as I don't like stupid numbers like that I posted this to get it up to the 100. Obsessive-compulsive or something. You could try using diskeeper. It's faster than Window's defrag and it lets you use the harddrive at the same time, so I would assume it would work OK with a screensaver... but I just have my monitor turn off after a few mins of inactivity rather than a screensaver. But.. Now you're up to 102, you'll have to post at least 3 more messages to get a proper number. In my eyes, anyway, I'm obsessive-compulsive as well.

Solve : Windows Won't Load - Error Message?

Answer»

Whenever I start my computer the Windows 98 screen shows up then it goes black and says "Windows Protection Error: Please press any key to restart" I press any key and that crappy looking orange lettering from Windows 95 comes up: "It is now safe to restart your computer"

Well I restart my computer and tusn out its not safe. I get the message saying Windows was shut down right and I can choose if I want to start in Safe Mode. I can get into safe mode all right but if I start in normal mode I get the same "Protection Error" message.

I have Windows 98 SE
HP Pavilion
191 MB RAM
GeForce 2 MX 32MB
How long have you been running 98se?
Did you reload or re-install the OS recently?
Do you have virus protection?
Do you still have the 98se OEM disk?
What was the last task you were doing before this happened?I've been using 98 for about 4 years now.
I haven't re-installed it recently
I haven't been using my anti-virus program for about a month now.
I don't have the Win98 disk but I do have my HP Recovery program disk.
And I don't REMEMBER the last thing I was doing before it happen. If you can get into safe mode without GETTING the error, Your registry might be corrupted. Boot to the DOS prompt and restore the registry from a previous cab file. Can you GIVE me step by step instructions on how to do that?go back to the safe mode options and start pc with the msdos prompt c:\....after this command type scanregI had this very same problem. Start up in MS-DOS mode (choose command prompt from the options). Type scanreg /restore. Choose a backup from a date when the computer worked correctly. It should RESET your system files to WORKING ones. Hope this helps.

Solve : Help with Windows XP Install?

Answer»

Going to try to lay out what I have done so far and see if anyone may be able to help. Current problem is rendering this computer unusable haha,  So hopefully with a bit of help from you I can get it figured out.

I have a computer given to me by a friend thats about 3-4 years old, Was custom built from a kit from what I understand, But I do not know ALL of its specifications.
3.00 ghz and it has a 240 Gigabyte hardrive, Came with a Windows Vista operating system.
I was not able to run some programs I needed on Visa, Have a basic dislike of the programs kinds and decided to install Windows XP on it instead.

I had a Slipstreamed Windows XP disk I made 2-3 years ago with SP3 on it that I ended up not using.

I used this and made it all the way to where you enter the product Key code.
Turns out I had already used the key code on a previous computer 2 years back ( found that out after calling Microsoft haha ).

After finding this out I went ahead and Purchased Windows XP pro with XP3 from Software speedy.

When I put the New Install Disk in it went through the Install process and reached the point where it says " Installing Windows" And then I had a window open up saying that there was an error and it had failed to install certain Catalog files.

I did some online research and found a Microsoft owned site with a Fix that instructed me to rename the Catroot using cmd.exe.
When I tried to do this it responded with " Access Denied"

After asking around I realized I may have made a mistake by NOT wiping the hard drive first before install.

I downloaded DBAN and burned the image onto a new blank CD-RW disk.
But whenever I try to use the disk the Computer completely ignores the FACT i have it in the drive, procedes with Windows XP install and asks me to insert the Install Disk.

I have tried setting Boot order to the disk drive through BIOS, and I have tried setting it to Boot from Disk using F8 on startup. No matter what i can't seem to get it to recognize the disk or begin the hard drive wipe process.

My assumption is I made a pretty basic mistake along the way ( Or quite a few lol ) or I may be missing something pretty obvious.

My experience with computers is limited and self taught, I've cleaned viruses from a few and re-installed Operating systems on 2 others in the past, so far back though I think i forgot most of what I had learned.

I'm at the point where I am worried I'd be better off purchasing a new computer without an OS and installing XP on it. I'd rather avoid having to shell out $300-$400 dollars for a new desktop though  .

Apologies for any grammatical errors and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

edit: Computer has NO OS on it currently and i do NOT have a Vista recovery disk or ability to go back to old OS currently.Do you have another PC? You can make a Linux-based CD that will boot up and you can use it to wipe the Hard Drive and prepare it for Windows installation.

Windows XP can install to  a hard drive that is wiped clean and doers not have an incompatible type partition already.

You said it was a home built. There are a few motherboards that are very hard for XP. If you are a newbie, you could just forget it and more on to something else.

One can not install XP om a PC that came with Vista.

IMHO your best investment is to find somebody you trust who will sell you his old computer. Or even buy a refurbished PC from an outlet that is backed by the company.

It appears the Microsoft recommends refurbished PCS with a MS certification.
Perhaps this means the will work. Here is the link.
http://www.microsoft.com/refurbishedpcs/
Hope this is of some help.I don't suppose you tried the new key with the slipstreamed disc. If it's the same version, it should work.

And I suppose you don't want to hear this, but any boot disk floppy is enough to reformat your hard drive. Boot from it, "format c:\, y" and you'll have a logically empty disk in 5 minutes.THANKS for the responses, Want to update everyone

I managed to get XP installed, I had too pull out all the RAM except 1 and it installed Smoothly.

For others with the same problem who might read this, here is the conversation that lead to me finally getting it installed.

this happened on FB so apologies for grammatical errors yet again.

Write that down and the video card manufacture and any number or make on it. If it has a built in lan, you'll need the drivers for that and the audio card.

Geek-9p : Thanks for pointing that out, Someone else i know suggested the same thing, thanks for the response.

Hunter Quest : The slipstreamed disk was not the same version, And i'll hear anything that helps haha, Good to know about the floppy, though i don't have any floppy's on hand, i wonder if they still sell them?? haha.

The Issue i'm having now is my Multimedia Audio Controller is missing, tried installing a Real Tek one but it said that it wasn't a windows Logged driver? when i proceeded normally i received a Stop Error and had to restart.

Going to try and find a different driver somewhere else.

Anyone know a good place for Audio Controllers? Please advise precisely where you found this person.  Was it on IRC?  What server?  What channel?  Or, what other exact info can you provide so as to be able to find this person?

Thank you very much! The person was an acquaintance through a game site and he responded to a request for help posted on FB

I have seen him in IRC rooms associated with the game but I'm unsure if he'd want me to give out how to contact him or if he does this sort of thing a lot haha.

I'd be willing to ask him.

Solve : Can not copy: Path too Deep?

Answer»

Can not copy: PATH too Deep.
I think this is the first time this hit me. Ever. It always happens to SOMEONE else.
So now what do I do? I have about 50 directories where the first 12 chars are a serial that I really don't need. The rest of the name is unique. So is there a quick way to truncate the first 12 chars of the names of the directories?

Also, this is doing a copy over a network. Would it help if I mapped the remote directory as a drive letter?
Thanks. You can try something LIKE this:
http://file-folder-ren.sourceforge.net/

That usually happens when the total path name characters exceeds 256 characters.http://www.chicagotech.net/winissues/pathtoolong.htmWhat I would suggest is that you copy the file over and over again, maybe like, 5 directories at a time or something like that. Then just move it up the drive until the path is shallow enough to copy. Quote from: Roguebantha on July 28, 2011, 02:11:10 PM

HuH ? ?

Do you understand path structures ? ?
If so ...how would this change anything ? ?Oh yeah my bad. That wouldn't work at all the path would stay the same lol. Ignore all given advice by me! (No kidding)K patio tell me whether this would work. (Unless he's already got the problem fixed) When you start typing on the command line, and are typing a longer path name like to "C:\Documents and Settings" (Which isn't really all that long but it works) you can start typing the name up to like "Doc" and then when you hit "tab" it completes the file name. The computer recognizes this in files by saying for example "Doc~1" or something like that with the "~" symbol substituting the tab key am I correct? So if he typed a little bit of every directory he went through and ended it with the "~1" would it still register to deep? Not sure...Won't work...

the tilde and number are added to make the filename a 8.3 DOS filename. it has nothing to do with tab.Oh well...After looking over similar issues others have had, it seems to be one of those problems that you just can not get the clear answer. The message will pop up if there is hardware problem or network issues.

Solved the problem by taking the laptop over to a router shared by both the Laptop and the De stop. Using wired Ethernet, it worked fine. (Before I was using the wireless.)

But after that ordeal, the laptop drive gave out a few hours later.  Must be a coincidence. Anyway, got the data of the drive before it died. Not knockin you here Geek or your customer but excessively long pathnames are a result of not knowing good solid file management skills...
Saw a clients machine recently...her saved Word docs were nested 5 layers deep...it happens.

Glad you were able to save the data nonetheless...Thanks Patio. You are right.
If people really want long file names for documentation, they could instead get a special program or plug-in that allows COMMENTARY on any file.

Oops. they already have that in Ms Word.

Thanks for the info. You could also try "*SPAM*". It helped me with Error 1320 in Windows 7. Wow! firsts for me.

Solve : Lost Safe Mode Password?

Answer»

Is there perhaps a default BIOS password that I can use instead of the one already set by me? I set the password several years ago and I can no longer remember it.

I need to access safe mode because I get this bluescreen error upon startup:

-----------------------------
A problem has been DETECTED and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the FIRST time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any NEW hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Solve : Then I tried to update my bios for V266b?

Answer»

Dear folks,
The TROUBLE started when I recently tried to use Magic BIOS to update BIOS for v266b jetway MOTHERBOARD first.
Needless to say it resulted in computer not booting up (otherwise I would not be writing this).
When I turned the computer on screen was black.
I created a "bios update" disk from
http://www.jetway.com.tw .
When I inserted the floppy disk message comes up similar to this: "This is not system disk".
My computer runs WIN2000.
I tried using boot disks for win2000, same thing happens too.
You attempted to flash the BIOS but failed?

Yes, and I do not know what can be done nowHave you tried reflashing? If you have a jumper setting for 'restore BIOS to factory CONFIGURATION' (NOT the ONE for 'clear CMOS settings), you can reload the factory ROM configuration into the BIOS and make another attempt to update the BIOS. Check your MB manual or the website for the MB.

Otherwise, you're going to have to have the MB reconfigured by a pro shop or replaced...

Many of these utilities specify a 'DOS boot floppy' on which the BIOS flash utilities are added. I find that a Win98SE boot disk stripped down to IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, and COMMAND.COM, makes an ideal way to flash BIOS. Check out www.bootdisks.comIf this is reflashing, I will try it.
It sounds easy to change jumpers to correct things.

Thanks for your recommendation guys.
I will see if it works. With reflashing I meant that you should see if you can still boot and flash the BIOS.

Solve : Laptop dial up through mobile phone?

Answer»

Hey, can anyone help. I need to configure a dell laptop (inspiron 9100) running XP home to dial up through a mobile phone. (Nokia) I have never done this and was looking for a few pointers. Any help appreciated.
Cheersyou need a cable to connect you moby to your laptop....and software >http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/19/10-19-95.shtml     its  ABIT expensive this project...have you thought of  adding a wireless card..there is a program embeded in windows called phone dialer...maybe you could use that ...with the cable connected to your laptop..There should be a serial RS232 port or USB cable available for your cellphone that will make it RECOGNISE as a network device, and you use that to define it as a dialup account. I've seen a few of these and the speeds were atrocious, around 14.4k to 19.2k bits like old fossil modems. (All these were on RS232 serial ports, a USB version may work better.) Use the AC adaptor (laptop and phone) when connecting by cell phone, the range and speed may be a little better.Could I connect my cellphone (Nokia 3210) to my PDA (Mars) with 28.8K modem? You would have to have a port cable (the PDA would have to SUPPORT USB or RS232 or ADB) between the PDA and the cell phone. The digital cell phone would do the signal CONVERSION. Check with both the PDA maker and the cell phone maker...Which mobil service do you have? VERIZON offers a mobil office kit for cel-to-lap connection. Runs around $35 and uses your minutes. Also has other plans for faster speeds.

ROFLMAO!

Do you speak Hindi? You'll need it to work with Dell's CS in India...

Like just about any major crackerbox PC MAKER, the CS is outsourced. I think you get a different CS number if you're a business user, though, one that actually connects you to someone who actually is an English SPEAKER and who knows more about a PC than where the power switch is. But they don't need much for that, most server and office-grade Dells are actually pretty good.

You can try getting the case off the unplugged machine and unplugging the RAM and plugging it back in, if you know what you're doing. This will reseat the connector and possibly clear the problem. If you're not FAMILIAR with the insides of your machine, find a knowledgeable friend (one who builds his own MACHINES is best) to do it...Bangorlore here >http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?DN=FA1012191

Solve : Windows Log On Message - Make sure User Name & Domain Name are correct.?

Answer»

Windows XP (a second laptop)
After the COMPUTER boots I get this message.
Windows could not log you on. Make sure User Name and DOMAIN Name are Correct then type your password again.

There is a logon dialog behind the message.
When I click OK on the message the computer continues to the usual log on window with the list of users.

I have tried to turn on Auto log on but nothing happens.

I used Regedit to see what was in the registry.

And I have two users Walter and Erod but neither has a password.
The domain is MARSMINI for both.

When I typed Control Userpasswords2 in Run I get the User Name as ADMINISTRATOR.

But there is no Administrator Account in the User Accounts and when I tried to enter it I got the message that the account already existed.

Both Walter and Erod have administrator privledge but I don't know if this is what it is referring to.

I know this is not a difficult problem but I am confused and don't know what to do from here.

Thanks.

Mighty ToadIf it's asking for a domain name then chances are your CMOS battery has gone dead and it's trying to boot to a network...
