Solve : Hard drive reports 'access denied'?

Answer»

We are WORKING on computer that began reporting page files too small.  Tried to install a repaired version of Win2000.  WOULD not allow a complete install.  Bought a new hard drive and successfully installed windows but when we install the old drive as slave, Windows  reports 'access denied' when we try to read data on drive. This happens with both old drives that were originally in computer.  We can read data in the Recovery Boot system on WIN CD but this system does not allow wildcards to copy data.  I'm sure that if we re-format drive it will solve problem but we need the data off it first.  Your help will be greatly appreciated.first i would run a diagnostic program on those hard drive..maker like maxtor/seagate etc have them and there is>http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/dskinv.html did you try altering the bios settings? or just chose the CABLE select option on those  hard drives...hth..Thanks for the reply.  We just solved the problem.  When we looked at the permissions on the drive there was a default user set up that I gave full control to.  Evidently, this is not enough.  I had to create a new user and set control parameters.  Once I did that, we had full access to the drive.  Interesting problem, simple solution that took us about 20 hours to find.

Solve : 5.1 speakers not working properly?

Answer»

My left speaker is dimmed almost to where I cannot hear any sound out of it, the right speaker is amplified, and it appears that the center speaker and the subwoofer have their signals crossed.
I have tried everything I know to try and have had no luck so here goes w/ what i have tried.

To start with, I have onboard sound that supports 5.1 speakers so that is not the problem. I have reinstalled drivers and updated them and this didnt seem to help.
I changed cable wires to the speakers and this moved the problem to my right speaker w/ my left speaker turning to CLEAR sound so it isnt blown.
In addition, I bought a 5.1 headset, and its the exact same problem on them w/ the left front dim and the right front amplified.
The connections are color coded and Ive even tried swapping them out to see if it helped....to no avail. I dont see any jumpers I can reset on the mobo so I dont think thats a problem either.
Somebody help
You may need to properly configure Windows and/or your drivers as well.

With my 5.1 Trust speaker set came a cable that would prevent the middle channel from acting as a subwoofer, I suggest you refer to the manual to see if there are any cables or extensions you may need to use.i didnt specify my speakers...they are Logitech Z-640
and my headset is a gainward headset.
Even if it were a problem w/ the speakers not having something hooked up, the same problem shouldnt occur in the headset as well.
Thats why i think its internal....but changing drivers didnt seem to work for me Quote

...Thats why i think its internal....(

Damaged JACK on onboard sound card?
That is possible, but i have checked it out and looked as best as i can and NOTHING seems loose or disconnected and its brand NEW lanparty 875B moboIf I were you, I'd obtain a soundcard recommended by Logitech for your speaker set.http://windows.about.com/library/tips/bltip606.htmI already tried changing that to the 5.1 speaker setting and as for GETTING a sound card, I don't think thats the issue seeing as I hooked up my 5.1 "Gainward" Headphones up to my comp and got the same error in the same configuration as my "Logitech" speakers.
As a last resort ill shell out the dough for a new sound card but I had hoped not to have to.What kind of 'error' is displayed in the configuration screen?

Solve : Autoexec.bat - missing?

Answer»

Autoexec.bat is missing in my system (Win98).  When I edit it thru msconfig and restart the computer its again missing.  Then I came to know the problem is with Wincomm, which is deleting my Autoexec.bat.  In Program Files, there is a FOLDER called Wincomm. I tried to DELETE it, but access is denied because its in use. So, I did CTL alt delete, and under processes there was Wincomm.exe and Winlock.exe. I tried ending the processes but they KEEP re-appearing on the list of processes.  Any way to get rid of this?  Pls help me to bring my Autoexec.bat back. You've got an internet worm and virus.  SCAN and delete.  Your anti-virus program is not up-to-date. :DThanks for ur information.  Finally found out it was due to a virus, which installed a wincomm.exe file and winlock.exe files by itself and deleted my autoexec.bat.  I deleted it from Program files.

You should use a virus scanner.

Solve : I have a minor problem.?

Answer»

Yesterday, I UPGRADED Avira to the latest version, and when I restart I get "This OPERATION has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.". I searched and it says it's a outlook and IE problem. So reset the IE and tried to remove outlook. Funny thing is I don't use IE only for windows update and never outlook. I even put my comp in safe mode and ran avira, malwarebyte, and windows malicious removal tool and it came up clean. Everything works just when everything loads up I get this popup when I start my comp. I can live with it but just want to make sure it's not a major problem or to find out if there is a fix.I noticed something, every 2 hours I get the pop up no matter what I am doing. Sometimes you will encounter a problem with the restrictions on your computer. To be more clear, whenever you click on a drive or a folder in your computer, you will get a message “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.” This occurs even if you are logged in as an administrator.

You will be able  to  run  all executables on your desktop and will be able to open all documents on the desktop. The programs also will work but you will not be able to save any thing in any folder as it refuses to open the folder/drive in the “Save as” window.

The solution of this problem can be done by using the Microsoft Management Console to fix issues with access permissions.TGA. The procedure is as follows..

1.Click Start > Run. Type MMC and then click OK.
2.Click Console and then click Add/remove Snap-in.
3.In the Add/remove Snap-in DIALOG box, click Add.
4.In  the Add Standalone Snap-in  list, click Group Policy, and then click Add.
5.In the Group Policy object window, click Finish.
6.Click Close, and then click OK.
7.Go to LOCAL Computer Policy > User CONFIGURATION > Administrative Templates.
8.Click Desktop.
9.In  the  right-pane,  Right-click Hide my Network  Places icon on desktop, and then click Properties.
10.Click Not Configured, and then click OK.
11.Expand Windows Components, and then click Windows explorer.
12.In  the  right pane,  right-click Prevent access  to drives from my Computer, and then click Properties.
13.Click Not Configured, and then click OK.
14.Quit the Local Computer Policy MMC snap-in.

Or this.I tried the second method first and restarted same issue, and same result as on the first method.

Solve : how to stop a program from loading up (win xp)?

Answer»

hello, i don't normally do programming, so i was messing around with some code i got from the internet and with c++

i compiled a program thats starts up using regestry KEYS, and LOGS me off when i log on, so i can't get into my COMPUTER, and safemode is not a option because my computer disable annyomous people from booting into safemode, the only way to get into safemode would be to get access to msconfig.exe, but i can't log in,

so i ask this; i read somewhere that by pressing certain buttons when you log on, only the most important process's load, and thus i'll be able to get in and FIX the damage i made

if you can help, thankyou.

and i know, i am really stupid

Solve : HAve a new MOtherboard Help!?

Answer» HEY guys wondering if u can help me i have a new motherboard Asus P4SP-MX and i am putting it into the compaq case it just the wiring for the switches screwed me up does anyone know how they work
like what color goes in which spot and the bad thing is they are not labeled the colors are
White
Red
Black
Green
Yellow
Blue
Orange
help please thanksThat information should be written in the mainboard manual.Perhaps you could visit the website of the case manufacturer to get the information on the switch wiring.

If not, you MAY have to trace the wires to the front panel yourself and supply your own connector LABELS. (Medical synthetic CLOTH tape works well for cheap, permanent wiring labels. Use a fine point Sharpie to mark it.)

The connectors on the motherboard should be documented in the installation manual for the motherboard. Asus has a great support page on the web for their boards.

Because everyone here is a little STUBBORN I'll explain why you have to install videocard drivers.

Windows XP does not come with (official) videocard drivers. You will have to install these either from the CD-ROM that accompanied your videocard or the videocard's manufacturers WEBSITE.  Quote

Solve : Slow loading files in windows XP?

Answer»

I have over 40,000 tif images to manage.  I want to distribute them into folders so that each folder contains 4 GB.  This way I can burn them to DVD, one folder per DVD.  The problem is:
When I open the folder that contains all 40,00 or so images, the file icons take forever to load.  I cannot quickley SCROLL , or select files because I have to wait for each little ICON to load.  These are not Thumbnails.  Under the views button, I have selected list.
Any suggestions?
thanksYou could possibly be short on RAM (?) XP will take up to 4 X 1024Mb with the right motherboard.

Try using Diskeeper 9 Professional's Frag-Shield and see if the MFT is big enough on that drive.

Just how fast is your processor and how much RAM do you have?

The real problem is that you have too many files in the one folder ...

Been here before. ;-)PENTIUM 4
1 gig RAM
Now isn't that odd?

ok bear with me.
Under folder View, there are options for thumbnails, tiles, icons, list, and details.

I chose list from the view options, this allows the maximum amount of files to be visable in the window.

I assumed that this would be the fastest way to view all the files.

If I chose Icons, the files load extremely fast.  This solved my problem, yet I am very confused as to why Icons, being larger, and more bulky appearing, would load faster than list, which consists of tiny symbols.

any explaination would be most welcome.
It has to show less icons in one Window and can load as you scroll down rather than having them load all at once. Caching that's called.XP or any windows will also be slow to load a large folder if you have 'view file size' selected as it must read every file size that it does not have in cache.have you tried scanning for adware/spyware? might be one of the reasons of your PC loading "slow"

Solve : I have duplicate picture files, I don't want them?

I right click and delete one of the 2 pictures and they both go to the recycle bin. They also have the same name (if that matters).  Thanks. Quote

Take a close look at them and see if one is a real FILE and one is just a shortcut to it. i.e. Does the real file have a size?

If they are both real files, then make a folder called PIC and copy the Entire Pictures folder to it with all of the picture.

Test by deleting a picture in one of the two other files, and if the same picture is NOT deleted from the PIC\Pictures folder , empty the recycle bin and then delete both of the suspects so that they are still in the Bin.

Now copy the Pictures folder (on its own) in the PIC folder back to the My Documents folder and see if this condition persists. Or put it somewhere else and make a link to it.

Mine is on another drive in its own folder.

(I do hope that MS is going to split the My Documents folder up so that each one can be placed on a different drive easily if you want it to be.)

It is my biggest complaint apart from the prefix My on everything.

It should either READ Your or, better still, God's, IMHO.

e.g. God's computer.

Solve : System Sound Settings Problem?

Answer»

I cannot figure out what is causing this problem.  For no reason, my master system volume will go up to its maximum and when I try to drag it BACK down, it just goes right back up.  I have a relatively new Dell laptop with a docking STATION.  Windows XP.  I am usually running Microsoft OUTLOOK, AutoCAD 2005, and Windows Media Player.  It has happened before with nothing running at all.  It will also affect my mouse, where I cannot right-click, and if I left-click it starts highlighting THINGS as I MOVE the mouse.  If I type, I get capital B's and lowercase b's.  Sometimes when I click Shutdown it won't, and I have to manually reboot.

Any ideas?Scan for viruses, spyware and trojan horses. Quote

Ran Spy-Bot, Ad-Aware, and Norton (updated this morning) and nothing.  All clean.

Is there a driver conflict?  Or maybe something with the soundcard?  It doesn't seem to happen when the laptop is not docked.
As suggested scan for trojans>http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/   you have stated is only occurs when is docked....therefore you are on the net yes/no..

Solve : Need to know how to delete programs from second drive?

Dell desktop.  Using XP with service pack 3.  C is my current drive, but I have an E drive with a lot of old unused programs.  I'd like to use the Windows applet to remove the old/unused programs, but they don't show up on the Add or Remove programs list.  Please advise.  Thanks. The E drive is just a second partition. It's just like a storage bin and you be able to just delete them. Do you use any of the programs on that drive?TRY Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html). If the programs don't show up, just delete them from the drive - they probably weren't installedI added more MEMORY to my computer and my older, smaller drive became E.  I only use one or two programs on the E drive.  It's mostly storage for photos and documents.  The windows applet doesn't see the (old, unused) programs on E.  If I just delete the programs from the drive or use Revo, will all the registry garbage be removed too? When you say you "added more memory" I'm guessing that you mean you installed a second hard drive???

And YES, if the programs show up in Revo then you will have the option of deleting all registry references. As I said above, if they do NOT show up in Revo, just delete everything manually. Thanks everyone. I will delete all my old unwanted PR ograms from my second hard drive (E:) using Revo/manually.

Yes.  Website will tell hardware configuration when they SHIPPED computer, what version of Windows was installed, etc.  It will also tell the Model Number, which you did not provide.

Error messages indicate a hardware failure of some SORT.  Maybe an onboard ethernet, which can be turned off in the BIOS, press F2 for setup utility (BIOS).
The computer is set up to boot from a network drive. PXE (pixie) is built into the lan card, and it is looking for boot drive and can't find it. You might not have an actual OS on the computer. You can try to disable it in bios, or remove the lan card, to see if it will boot LOCAL. If it does, it will likely be to a DOS prompt.my media player wont work. I tried downloading a new one but it still wont work. it has trouble installing it

On another forum somewhere, somebody posted a GIF animation, and the forum automatically resized the gif to 50x50 pixels.. and everytime I go to that page, my screen goes nuts.  It LOCKS up and blacks out like crazy.

But yet I can play a graphic intensive 3d game at 1024x768 running at 70 FPS.. without a problem!I think it may be an Internet Explorer setting.  Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced-->Multimedia--"Enable Automatic Image Resizing". Turn On. Quote

I think it may be an Internet Explorer setting.  Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced-->Multimedia--"Enable Automatic Image Resizing". Turn On.

No, that's completely not the problem lol.

It does it anywhere in windows.  In explorer, in IE, in mIRC.. anywhere where there's a lot of visual activity.

Does the monitor turn on when you move the mouse?

Check your power settings in start > Settings > Configuration  -> Power (settings)what refresh rate is your monitior set on?try roll back the graphics driver...and have look in the events log admin tools or run this diagnostics>http://www.belarc.com/Download.html  to check and see if your ramsticks are ok..

Solve : Java applet won't show scanned image?

Answer» System: IBM Netvista MN: 8310-4EU with XP SP3 vintage May, 2003

Printer: Lexmark OptraImage T616 vintage 2002

Scanner: AV820C

Control Panel: Lexmark OptraImage Control Panel: PN: 4036-205 vintage 2002

Browser: Internet Explorer 8

Java version: 7, update: 25

Situation: I've attached an MS Word document with details of what I do, with
printscreens, and the error I get that I'm trying to get help with.

Please have a LOOK at it and if anyone can suggest a solution, I'm very much obliged!

Thanks!

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by ADMIN]Sorry, I don't understand.
Do you need to scan a photo?
Or do you want to trouble shoot Java?

If you want a scan of the photo, why don't you use the software that comes  with the Lexmark printer?
Thanks for your reply.

"... why don't you use the software that comes with the Lexmark printer?"
I am.  When I connect to the printer using my pc by entering the printers'
inTRAnet IP address into IE8, the printer feeds back an interface.  In that
interface thats displayed by IE8 on my pc, I have to first set up the job using
that interface and then go to the printer and scan.
There is an option to be able to go directly to the scanner, and scan
the job into my pc, or email it to me, but this is an old scanner system and
I haven't yet been able to figure out how to do this.  The printer is complex
and its setup options are not intuitive and there's no help to mention.
That said, I've been dealing with starting the job from the pc first, and
would like the issue I'm having solved.

Were you able to open and see the attached document to my post?

To answer your question, frankly, I don't know if the problem I'm
having is with Java, my pc, the scanner-printer, or a combination.

I'm lead to believe that because its the Java applet window that
shows the path to the scanned image, that the problem is with
Java somewhere.  But I don't want to commit to that diagnosis.

The Java applet window, after the image is scanned, will display
the path to location of that scan on my pc that I entered when
I created the job on my pc using the printers interface in IE8.

In years past, I could then click the "Launch" button thats inside
the Java applet window, and the image would appear in Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer.

Now, when I click the "Launch" button, I get an error in the
title bar of the Java applet window, which merely says,
"Image Received - Error launching"

The title bar of the Java applet changes from "Waiting for Image,"
which pops up after I've created the job, to, "Image Received,"
after I did the scan, to "Image Received - Error launching,"
after I click its "Launch" button in an attempt to view the
scan immediately.

I hope I've given you a clearer picture of whats going on and
that you have a suggestion that may help solve this issue

And please LET me know if you were able to open the attachment
to my original pos
t, and if so, did it make any sense to you?

Thanks!Yes, I saw your attachment. I nave never seen that kind of install on a PC. Looks more like an Apple installation. I have used Lexmark printers, but that model.  I have never needed to use the IP of a printer  or scanner on Windows installs. I doubt that is the only recommended method. (But I can be wrong.)

All scanners I have used had an install CD or a driver set. Did you actually use the install CD?
This link claims to have documentation and drivers for Windows XP, as well as Mac and Linux. Be sure to use only the Windows XP instructions. If you need an emulator for PostScript, there is for Windows.

http://www.lexmark.com/US/en/view/Printers%20&%20MultiFunction/Lexmark-Optra-T616/catId=cat170005-category&prodId=1540-product
Did you already look at the link above?

Thanks.

Yes, there are CD's that came with it, but they're not compatible with XP !

No, I haven't been to that link you sent, but I'm there now, and confused
as what to do, what to choose to download, what a SANE thing is ... its
over my head.

Help?Pick the 32 bit version for windows 2000, NT and XP.
You may want the administrators guide also.
After you click 'download', the browser will ask you if you want to save the file. Confirm and wit for download to finish. Run the program. Follow the instructions.

It should install a TWAIN driver for the scanner. After that, you can get to the scanner inside of your photo editor program. You can even use 'Paint' to READ from scanner. (Paint.exe is in the Accessories group.)
You can save a photo image in JPG format or BMP format. For drawings, GIF is better and may take less disk space.Again, thanks.

99% of the scanning I do is pdf documents for emailing
(haven't gone 100% paperfree yet, but want to).  Does
knowing this change any recommendation of yours?

Re" "Pick the 32 bit version for windows 2000, NT and XP."
This one? "Custom PCL driver for Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003" ?
Or this? "FULL Driver Package with installer for PCL and Postscript Windows 9X, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP and Server 2003 operating systems"

If you could give me a lead as which one to pick, much appreciated!

Again, thanks!I went to the Lexmark site, found the dirver packages, chose the full version,
downloaded, and attempted to install only to discover that I'd already done
this back in February.

Solve : pc-restarting by itself?

Answer»

Hi all. My problem with PC, Windows XP, SP2. It had either restarted by itself, or got frozen or blue screened so I had to restart it. I dont know exactly when it started I forgot. Today I decided to format it. I transfered all data to external hdd and formatted it. Everything went smoothly during the formatting. After that I INSTALLED drivers for motherboard and for VGA. After I clicked finish for the latter driver the cursor got frozen. I restarted several times in normal mode and once in safe mode and the mouse remains frozen. The picture is this: The windows opens, a warning appears that a register was recovered from the log, and the cursor remains frozen. Would anyone please tell me what should I do. I have one Hiren's boot CD but I dont know what to do with it. If any of you guys need more information I will provide right away. THnx This can be caused by many THINGS. Could be RAM, Hard Drive is ill for swap file access, or main board related. I would remove and reseat the RAM, make sure the CPU is not clogged with lint and dust, and download and burn memtest86 to a bootable CD or DVD and run 3 or 4 passes of memtest86 on this system to make sure that the memory is good.

I would boot the system off of a Live Linux distro like Linux Mint or Ubuntu and make sure that it behaves when running off this live environment. From this live Linux environment both distros have good Hard Drive tests that can read the SMART data and runtime of the hard drive and give you information as to if the hard drive is really healthy or not. You can also run tests from this environment on the hard drive using the built in utility that is accessible through the GUI under system tools.Thank you for the answer Dave. I removed and reseat RAM, cleaned CPU and checked hdd for errors.
I am sorry for my question I am not a professional just to be sure: Are you proposing that the fault is in hardware ( just in order to avoid reinstalling windows)?Generally issues like the ones you are having can be caused by many things. The best thing to do would be to try to isolate where the problem is located. It could be memory, main board, hard drive, or weak power supply, as well as can be DEVICE conflicts if this system has had hardware added that is not part of the original build, although this is a very rare occurance these days with plug n play.

A long time ago I had a customer CONTACT me with an issue with installing Windows and it installed FINE, but it would always crash in one spot on boot. The problem was as simple as the fact that the original Windows Installation disc was scratched up and not well kept so this portion of the disc was corrupt and that corruption made its way to the Hard Drive installation without any errors on install. The fix here was to borrow someone elses Windows 98 Disc and use their own key with the other persons disc. Is your disc free of scratches?

I'd run memtest86 to test RAM for 3 or 4 passes. If that is fine with no errors shown, then I'd test the hard drive with a Live Linux distro such as Mint 14 or 15 or Ubuntu, in which you boot the system off of the DVD, but do not need to install it, and observe how the system behaves in this different environment which should operate flawlessly as long as you have at least 1GB RAM and a Pentium 4 or better CPU. If it acts up during this Live Linux test and it meets the system requirements of 1GB RAM and Pentium 4 or faster CPU and it passed the memory tests, then it is likely a weak power supply or main board issue as for this Live Linux distro operates without the need of a hard drive and without the need for an installation.

To help you better what is the system make/model and specs? CPU, Amount of Memory, size of hard drive etc...Here's a good harddrive diagnostic program.

Run hard drive diagnostics: tacktech.com
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: imgburn to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here:

Solve : MSHTA Application?

Answer»

what does an MSHTA Computer Application Do?Robyn Hull.....Here's some info on it for you .

http://www.thejemreport.com/news_index81.html

dl65  Thanks, that helps, but one more question.......I have a teenage son at home whom my husband and I monitor (and he is aware of it)

There is an application MSHTA open and he is typing stuff in it, how is that possible?Robyn Hull.....Ok ...I see WHATS going on ....sounds like POSSIBLY a chat room of some type...does it have a name ie.......ICQ  , msn , yahoo or one like that ?
Its possible there may be a log file associated with whatever it is he's using. If you can it might be prudent to check the internet History.....after he has left the pc.....open explorer , then click on the history icon .....its up on the top toolbar and the icon looks like a clock.......this will list all the sites he's been VISITING ...( unless hes smart enough to have been deleting that info before he leaves. ( And if thats the case you will just have to outsmart him)  install a keylogger on the pc and it will record every keystroke he uses .....

Hopefully you wont have to go that far.

let us know .

dl65
That is what we have already done and it is COMING up under keystrokes typed (which looks like a login /password) with the application of MSHTA out to the side Quote

mshta.exe is a part of Microsoft Windows Operating System which is needed to execute .HTA files.

Perhaps he is trying to execute HTA files?

Quote
We all know what a .HTM file. But what about a .HTA file? The two are closely related, yet very different. Let me explain.

The letters HTA are meant to stand for HTML Application. The technology was developed by Microsoft, so is a proprietary concept, and only works in conjunction with Internet Explorer (specifically version 5 and above).

When you follow a link in a Web page to a file that the browser does not know how to render, such as a .ZIP file, the What would you like to do with this file? dialog box displays.

The same dialog will appear when you follow a link to a .HTA file, because the browser itself doesn't recognise it as something that it can display (or 'render') itself. However, thne enviroment is aware, though, that an HTA file can be executed just like a .EXE file. So you can think of an HTA file as being much like an EXE file, but with a  .HTA file extension.

Robyn Hull....It could also be a dialer......check you phone bills..

The keylogger , which you have installed .......doesnt it log everthing he types ?

Solve : old computer to laptop?

Answer»

Hi I have decided to start using a laptop for everything I do from now on, the problem comes because my old computer has winxp pro and all of my information that I want to keep. The laptop came with winxp home and a hard drive that is not near as larg. Is there any way to transfer everything including the xp pro to the laptop from the desktop? Can it be done as some kind of image or something? Also is it easy to UPGRADE laptop parts like hard drive and memory and vid card the one I got has a nice processor but that is about it -I just got stuck with it! :-/

Any help would be greatly appreciated If you use a laptop, you will have to make some sacrifices.. Everything has to be very compact, unless you travel a lot you're better off with a good Desktop which is much easier to maintain, upgrade and repair.Man thats not what I WANTED to hear
Do they make hard drives for laptops with larg capasity the one I ended up with has 30gb I want something like 80!!
Also I have experience with redhat And was thinking there might be a way to use it to make some kind of iso of my hard drive or something. I dont know though if I could get rid of the laptop it wouldnt be a problem -see I sell on eBay and the laptop is one that was selling two months ago for big bucks but this one is the last one and I cant get rid of it for at LEAST what I paid cause everything has changed so much.
O well if I have to use it and I have to be compact it will all be better for school anyways I am certain there are larger Hard Disk Drives than 30 GB avaible for Laptops.

You could also use an external HDD.

I have no experience with creating images, but have you tried software such as Norton Ghost? Thanks for the info even though it isnt exactly what I wanted to hear-lol

If I figure out something that is easy and free I will post it so you will be able to TELL others if the question ever comes up again Quote

1)  Do they make hard drives for laptops with larg capasity the one I ended up with has 30gb I want something like 80!!

2)  ...might be a way to use it to make some kind of iso of my hard drive or something...

1) Yes, they make 100GB notebook drives.  Better to get  60GB 7200rpm than an 80GB 5400rpm or 4200rpm

2)  Symantec Ghost creates an image.  Runs from DOS.

Solve : When opening pics, Security Warning keeps popping up...?

Answer»

This is not catastrophic, but very bothersome. A few weeks ago I installed an old drawing program, PhotoMagic, unfortunately, without my knowledge or consent, it changed the extension associations for all the JPGs on my computer. I have a viewer called Vuepro that I USE EXTENSIVELY. I managed to change the extension association back to Vuepro, however, I now get a Security Warning popup when trying to open every JPG. No matter how many times I uncheck the "Always ask..." box, it keeps popping up each time I try to open a different JPG. I have a vast art reference library and all of them are JPGs. Please help resolve this problem. Any responce appreciated and will answer any questions I can. Thank you.

Win XP Pro
Version 2002 Service Pack 3
HP Compaq dc 7100
3.4 GhHz, 2 Gigs Ram
AVG Antivirus, SUPERANTISPYWARE

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]It looks like whatever you did to change the file association ended up breaking the .jpg extension (notice that it is given the "unkown" file icon).

I'd recommend uninstalling both PhotoMagic and Vuepro and then reinstalling them. Make SURE that you do PhotoMagic first if you want Vuepro as your default image viewer. The installer will usually have a list of file types that it can use, and you can usually choose which to have it associate. However if it does not GIVE you this option, then installing vuepro after PhotoMagic should do the trick.

If that doesn't do the trick, you can also do a System Restore to a point before you edited the association. That will reset to how it was, and if it still goes to PhotoMagic, you can alway r-click and choose "Open With..." As your opening method. Thanks kyle, I decided Photo Magic wasn't worth the hassle so I did a system restore and that solved the problem. I will follow your advice, should something like this happens again! Thanks kindly. It's no problem! I'm glad you got it figured out.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities.
Check your harddrive configuration, and check any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK / F to check for harddrive corruption then restart your computer.Do all of the above...including Allan's suggestion and report back with your results...When F8 is tapped I go to a black screen with this:

Wish to install Zorin, but can't get into BIOS without password

DEPENDING on the age of the laptop it might be able to be reset by removing the cmos battery and then plugging cmos battery back in.  However if its too new, its locked for good and REQUIRES the BIOS FLASH ROM to be replaced because its in lock out mode, and while some are socketed, most are soldered onto the main BOARD.

I use windows 2000 pro and the stop error 0x0000007B started to appear on start up, while loading windows.

When i use a boot DISKETTE, I cannot access c: from ms-dos.

But, when i use an antivirus boot diskette, the program accesses c: and scans it.

I really need to copy a file from c: -- how do I do it?

I haven't added any hardware. But i have been using a usb pen disk.

Immediately before the error appeared, i installed norton anti-virus and plasma, a 3d flash software.

I scanned the disk with an antivirus boot diskette, and it found two trojan downloaders and one trojan horse, but couldn't delete them because it was on some sort of resd-only mode.

Solve : flush and refill?

Answer»

My computer has a great many problems with it, and because I seem to have made no progress whatsoever (it's been getting far worse each time I try to fix it, for every different problem), I would like to just FLUSH all this crap and reinstall everything so it is nice and new and clean.

So far I plan to burn all the things I want to keep onto dvd's and cd's.  Once I'm done with this, how would I go about uninstalling everything and reinstalling it all.  I think this is called crashing the computer, but I don't know how.  Please tell me.

I have windows xp, and as a side note I have a bunch of new HARDWARE; in this crash process do I have to uninstall all the software and remove the cards and drives beforehand?forgot to MENTION that I only have access to safe mode...billiusthemook.....What you want to do is known as formatting the hard drive .....( all data is removed from the drive) . Before you start you should take the time to review these webpages .......they describe two methods of doing this .....and they will both work ....

Are you yanking our chain?

Definition of Crash

You donot require to remove any hardware when you format your Hard Disk Drive. You will have to install drivers later on, but these will be removed when formatting the Hard Disk Drive they were located on.I have read the links, thank you for providing them.

I'm not pulling you chain.

The reason I asked if I had to remove the hardware is because in xp you have to install the software BEFORE installing the hardware, and after all the drivers have been removed and you must reinstall them, the hardware will already have been installed.

But I guess by your response I don't have to remove the hardware.

I'm about to reformat so thank you for the information.  I hope this will be the end of my problems.to end all your problems bill disable automatic updates..disable remote access...unless of course you use it...encypt your wireless...as people can access your system by using  a scanner....and there is this if you need it>http://www.windowsreinstall.com/indexwinxp.htmsorry I haven't responded in a while, I've been busy.

because I can't access standard mode, I've been using safe mode, and while I can run Roxio Easy CD and DVD creater, for some reason both my DVD/CD drive and my CD drive are not responding.  In my computer it shows two cd drive icons, and they are labeled CD Drive, and when I click properties they are labeled as they were before with the DVD/CD witer etc.

It tells me the device is working properly, but in Roxio it says there is No Recorder.

Are CD's not accessible in Safe Mode?Have you uninstall roxioNo it's still installed and I've never uninstalled it.If you lok here bill there will be need to save your stuff to disk>http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/installxpwindowsparallel/index.htmI know there's need to save my stuff to disk, that's why I'm trying to access my dvd burner; to burn all the files I want to save onto a disk.

And I was under the impression that I insert the windows xp cd, then I restart the computer, then, in dos, I run it to reformat the computer, deleting everything on the c drive, and then I reinstall windows and begin anew, then once everything is good to go, i copy the files on the DVD's i had burned back onto the new, clean c drive.

So, because I currently have no access to the standard mode, I'm running in safe mode.  For some reason, safe mode won't recognize the burner. (meaning if I put a blank cd or dvd in the drive, it tells me there's nothing there and roxio can't burn, and if I put in a rw dvd or cd with files on it, I can access the files but cannot copy things onto it and roxio tells me there is no burner.

I need to run the burner, but I don't think safe mode allows that.  If it normally does, then I need to get MY burner working because it isn't for some reason.Bill my friend the website i posted does ....re-install winxp without losing any files you have......?but then the virus would remain, wouldn't it?no it would be destroyed...win will over write the virus script.... that what a virus it....a script windows cannot understand.......and therfore throws a wobbly...the best script..for all is ...why?alright I'll try it out

Thank you for the help, wish me luck

Solve : XP mahines losing network access (having to reset winsock)?

Answer»

My XP machines are losing DOMAIN access, symptoms can include:

Username no longer Joe Smith but jsmith on start menu
Access Denied on printers
Limited access on Network
No network connectivity
no access to file shares
disconnected mapped drives

I will run netsh winsock reset and reboot. It fixes the issue.

This is not happening on my Win7 computers.
I have Server2008 MDC and win2003 DC's at several offices.

Trying to figure out to fix this on the system/networkDoes this just happen once to each machine, or is it a recurring issue after you've run netsh winsock reset and rebooted?
Does there seem to be any pattern at all as to which machines encounter the problem?  For example is it certain departments, PEOPLE connected to certain printers, people who run certain programs, etc?It really has no preference besides XP machines. Have not seen it once my Win7's have about 100 of each. It generally is fixed after the reset. I have run into 1 pc that I have had to do it several times on.

We were having a problem with domain trust issues on all PC's. So I FOUND an article with a solution that I ran. It has fixed that issue. This new issue started about 3 days later. Not sure if that could be RELATED or not. here is the link on that:
http://dailyadminlife.wordpress.com/2011/08/05/the-trust-relationship-between-this-workstation-and-the-primary-domain-failed/I can't see that that change would cause this issue myself, so I don't think it will be related.
I'll have a think on it, it's not something I've run into on our domain but we're very much phasing out any XP machines we have left.  I'll post back if I think of anything to try.See Here...I am having no problem fixing the winsock issue. My goal now is trying to figure out what is causing it. So far I have repaired about 30 XP machines with no light at the end of the tunnel for the other 70. I am trying to figure this out before I have to.

Solve : Here is anDelay in windows xp?

Answer»

My browsing through windows delays by 2 minutes on WHATEVER I click on. For example: When I click on start, It will take 2 minutes for the user menu to appear. When on click on anything on the user menu, it will take another 2 minutes for the next page to appear. Whatever I do on that window it will also take 2 minutes for the next window to appear. If I click on control panel, It will take 2 minutes for the control panel to appear. Everything has a 2 minute delay. Even shutting down has a  2 minute interval. This has been going on for over a year. Please help!!!!
What browser?

Also, being as you mention the Start button and Control Panel, do you actually mean Windows Explorer ??If it happens with everything (START, MENUS, etc), the browser isn't important - the problem goes beyond that .

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Have you run full scans with BOTH your anti virus app and with MalwareBytes? If not, please do so now.

3) How does the system perform in safe mode?As of anything new. I changed my isp and downloaded google chrome. However: this problem has been happening since June of 2012. What I've done did not effect the delay. Scans were run and nothing was picked up. Safe mode works just fine.                           Since safe mode works fine let's try a selective startup.

Open msconfig and on the General TAB choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is CLEARLY a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
The culprit was the services. There were 86 services listed. Do I disable all of them? No. Follow the instructions in my post above and add processes / services back one or two at a time until you identify the offending process / service.Allan,

I want to thank you. My problem is completely solved. I disabled the dcom server. Everything after that worked with considerable speed. I have another question. I hope you don't mind. My INTERNET browsing is very slow. I'm running widows xp Home Edition version 2002 sp3. My processor is 1.20ghz with 256mb ram and 40gb hd. You probably can tell that this computer is pretty old but it serves my purpose. Is there anything I can do to speed it up? Thanks againBrowsing speed is dependent upon your is- and network connection. How are you connected to the Internet (broadband, modem)? And is this a new problem or has it always been this way? Also, try a different browser and see if it makes a difference (Firefox, Opera, etc).If you disabled the DCom server process i'm suprised you can even connect to the netI'm from the old school. I use dial-up. Using this do you think a different browser would make a difference? If you're using dial up then your connection speed is what it is. If you need a faster internet experience you'll have to switch to broadband. You can try other browsers to see if they make any difference - there are some that may be a touch faster (Opera, Safari, Chrome).I just switched  to chrome. I'll see what happens. Thanks again.

Solve : "and" turns into ampersand?

Answer»

Hi - bit of a weird one and I can't find any reference on the web or in these forums...

In my Office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel) whenever I TYPE "and" it turns into an ampersand "&".
Whenever I type a full stop (or period) "." it turns into a dollar sign "$".

It happens as soon as I hit enter or space.

It just started doing it last week - never seen it before ... and it's DRIVING me nutso - anyone got any idea what's going on?

I'm running Windows XP Pro version (5.1, Service Pack 3) with Office 2007.

Thanks
Robert

Yes, you should.
You should create a separate user account for your daughter so she can play around and learn without affecting your settings.

my computer screen will suddenly go black, and the computer will restart sometimes two or three times a day; I have a clean machine, always had anti-virus and/or firewall, defrag often, dump cookies & files often, never had a virus infection; have adaware and spybot; not always online when this happens, a few times have gotten "this computer has performed an illegal..." but not often; this problem started after two things: 1) i DOWNLOADED mozilla browser and then uninstalled it and 2) installed norton security--However (SIGH) the machine is 4 YRS old, running Win98SE, IE6..... :-/Lots of reasons....but to eliminate this...have you added a new graphics card...but i see the phantom ie 6 download?had a problem with ie it seems...ok here is what i would do in your case...either LOAD the win98se disk ...browse..this cd...locate the add ons folder then the pws folder...scroll down and click the setup icon which will re-install your system..without losing any files..or scanreg/restore command..or you could do this in the add/remove program... click the ie  6 program...and at  the splash screen..chose the options...i would remove it........and use ie5.5 INSTEAD its more stable...Download the latest Microsoft (Security) Updates.

Solve : Help Recycle Bin Restoring Problem?

Answer»

Hey, I had a bunch of songs that were tossed into the recycle bin...And I cant restore them cause the folder that they were in has apparently been deleted for good! So what I tried to do was create another folder ("Muzik") at the same location, with the same name for the songs to be restored to, but it wont let me....

What to do?  :-/Normally a new folder (in your case "Muzik") will be CREATED in the same PLACE automatically when you restore the file. Basically, there is something very, very strange going on here.

Your songs, I fear, are currently in binary heaven, so to speak. If you haven't written too much to your hard drive since this incident, you may be able to get some - if not all - your songs back with a data-recovery program.

There are computer shops that offer this service, so have a look in your area for one. Alternatively if you fancy getting those hands DIRTY, you may be able to download one from somewhere, most likely in the form of a demo. There are a few on this page at download.com

http://www.download.com/File-Disk-Management/3150-2248_4-0.html?tag=stbc.gpThanx a lot for your reply and the link...

I solved the problem by restarting the computer and voila! I was able to finally restore em all! Go figure

Anyways now Im happy...thanx againpeople may think that they have deleted files from the recycle bin...but they are held in the msinfo2 folder which is in the recycler folder..which is a hidden file...and after three days the files that are sent to the recycle bin and deleted...do get deleted after three days..An embarrasingly easy answer to a potentially difficult problem. At least that's sorted.

But merlin, the way I thought it worked was that when you emptied the recycle bin, the file(s) in question were simply renamed (I believe they were given a question mark at the very start of the filename) which hid them from the user. They stayed on disk until eventually the hard disk fills to the brim and they have to overwrite these "deleted" files in order to store something - effectively deleting them properly. This was how disk fragmentation occurred, which was why you have to run defrag every so often. Why not try it youself here is how to...INFO2 is a hidden file that holds the information on files in the Recycle Bin and to find out more>Go to Start/Run and type in: CMD. At the prompt type in: cd\ [enter] then cd Recycled [enter] then dir [enter].
this can help people who have deleted so called files..defrag will not TOUCH them....unless the INFO2  file is  damaged...and will show up on defrag as a RED strip /block...
