Hi all,

Both of my Thinkpad's ctrl KEYS are not registering. ???This is not a hardware glitch as they sometimes start working again (also, it seems unlikely that the two keys would break at the same time).

Solve : windows taking unusually long to boot up?

Answer»

when my computer is booting up, right before the screen that SAYS "windows is starting up/loading personal settings", i hear a beep from my computer's internal speaker and then it takes extra long during the "windows is starting up/loading personal settings" screen-this didn't happen until after i installed sp2the beep you mention is normal...try a few tweaks have a look here>http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm i have my own options on updating....I have my own opinions on most of Merlin's posts

scan for viruses, trojans and spyware.

Defragment on a regular basis.

Also clean your registry and remove redundant files. What happens with updates they pinch your hard drive space...screwup your pc...then along comes a reg cleaner...and deletes most of the winupdates....so what is the advantage of having them in the first place i can understand that programmer may have placed a dot is instead of a dash reg PATCHES..butwhy are there so many updates...views on this subject...a poll maybe...There are updates because some software isn't properly written and requires FIXING.....?

Why do you THINK technology constantly keeps IMPROVING?

Solve : I have my network password, but computer has password not allowing. Can I get ar?

Answer»

Our neighbors moved and I found a laptop in their garbage.(Don't ask) I actually did score alot of Xmas decorations and a Dell XPS M1210 laptop which fired up. It has Windows XP on it, it showed 2 users, 1 was password protected and the other wasn't. So I was able to check some things out, no personal data or documents were on there. The COMPUTER picked up that there was a wireless network in my house, so it asked for the network password and tried to connect. But it wasn't able to through the Intel(R)Proset wireless program. It said something a password needed to connect to a network. Is there a way to get around this? What about using the computer in general, just go under the other user? Of course with no network connection, not sure what to do? Do I end up clearing the whole hard drive? But then I loose my OS? Any help woul dbe appreciated, haven't really had to deal with issues like this. ThanksYou can use the Ethernet connector get into then wireless router. The diret wire does not need a security code.

As you getting into other users, you should check with you neighbor. The fact that he protected part of the computer implies he has stuff he does not want you nto use.

In general, this forum does not offer help within getting around other people's security. I am not saying your are a evil-doer. .... It is just CH policy.

Reference:. For evil-doers reading this, you would do better ton search on the Internet for you filed of internist. Example: Using Yahoo, search on the phrase
"How to Commit Credit Card Fraud and Identity Theft"

They have some interesting ideas.

Sounds like you need to put in your wifi password. If it were me, I would wipe the laptop and start over. I wouldn't want anything to do with other peoples data. I guess I never thought about my questions looking like I was engaging in criminal activity. Just would like to be able to use it. I don't know the neighbors, they have left and the new tenants are cleaning. I guess I could search, but how would I go about clearing the hard drive completely? Is there a way to keep the OS on? Or how can I install one? I would have complete access then correct? Also, I think I saw the windows/or Microsoft sticker on th ebottom of it. Would this help me or is this protected also? You would need to get an Operating System disk and a drivers disk for the laptop. You can download all online. Then install the OS and update the drivers.. You should be good to go.

Want a free operating system, install a free Linux operating system. Just do a Google search on that topic. Quote from: wolfman on October 20, 2013, 04:20:58 PM

1. You don't know where your neighbours got this laptop, I guess if it was "hot" they would not have just dumped it in the trash, because it might get traced back to them. Anyhow, items in someone's trash are not really legally yours.

2. It isn't really "your" OS, for a similar reason.

3. I suppose it's possible that someone might dump a 6 to 7 year old laptop.

This is your only real option. We can't help you with getting the password for the laptop in order to get it working properly for you, and in all honesty do you really want to pick up where someone else left off? Wiping and installing from fresh is the only sensible choice. If it has a license key on the bottom, then so much the better for you I'll briefly explain the deal again. Someone in our neighborhood moved, the new people left a wooden chest out at the road, it caught my eye, also a box of Xmas ornaments and a box of old college papers/books with a laptop case that contained the Dell. So I don't believe it's hot and yes, I'd like to be able to use it. I have no intention of trying to crack it to seek out their files, so wiping it clean is definitely fine with me. I have done some searching, but am confused by the different methods and programs I am seeing and the exceptions that take place if there are partitions? I have built a few desktops and do basic maintenance, but am not good when dealing with OS's, bios, safe mode etc. Can someone direct me to a link of a very detailed step by step procedure of the best way to do this. I don't want to beat this post to death, since it's not really a password issue after all. Thanks for everyones input. One other question, if I do have the windows/microsoft number, how would that help me if I don't have the disk. Sorry for my lack of knowledge on thisJust download the matching OS, a quick Google search should get you going on that. Burn it to disk then pop it in and boot the Laptop to it. Follow the prompts. Thats all you need to do. If you run into problems with things like video quality or sound issues. Just go to Dell and download and install the proper drivers. This is what I would recommend. If you have the codes, just try to borrow a similiar disk and re-install the OS. If you can't borrow one, it will be necessary to find on on-line.Admin rights are needed for anything system related (like adding a Wifi connection or altering TCP/IP settings). Since you're not allowed to do that, it is obvious that the user you're on doesn't have those rights.

That said, I mostly agree with the OTHERS. A new OS is what you need/want. Personally, I'd say get a free linux DISTRO unless you want to buy a copy of Windows. Technically you don't own the product key for that copy of windows... So technically you shouldn't be using the key. Not to mention, that if that key has been registered/used before, it may not work again.

It's just safer and easier to go with a linux distro. Thanks for EVERYONE's input. I did try to install an older version of XP I had, but am having some problems. I started that under a new thread, to avoid getting off topic. I'm not sure if that's allowed by the administrator, but it seemed like the logical step.

Solve : Run-Time error 383?

Answer»

This is my first post and I'm not sure where to post it at... if this isn't the correct place, please direct me or move this topic.

In an effort to clean my computer (I run XP Pro 2002/sp3), I ran the following programs yesterday in the order listed below and accompanied by their log files.

After running these programs with the necessary restarts, I started to play a game and the audio started breaking up, skipping, and just didn't sound correct. I then attempted to play a song with WMP with the same results. Thinking my Sound Blaster Live had a problem, I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but the problem remained.

At this point I did a System Restore to just prior to running all of the scans listed below. That corrected my audio problem but now I'm sure that every thing the scans found and deleted have been reinstalled.

Today, I downloaded and saved several INSTALLERS, Montiera Toolbar removal tool and SpyHunter (I never run an installer w/o first scanning it) and tried to scan them by right clicking and selecting MalwareByes in the Context menu. When I did this, I rec'd this error - Run-Time Error 383....Text property is read only. I tried the scan several times with the same error message. I then decided to scan a folder in My Documents with the same results.

I use Zone Alarm Anti-Virus + Firewall (free) and was able to scan the installers and the My Docs. folder.

Sorry if this post seems long and 'rambling' but I felt that all the steps I took (and the scan logs) leading up to this Run-Time Error would be helpful and that someone would be able to tell me if they see what may be causing this Run-Time error.

Any help will be greatly appreciated...... Grayghost

########## EOF - C:\AdwCleaner\AdwCleaner[S1].txt - [2928 octets] ##########Just curious...what A/V app do you run ? ?

BTW nothing malicious can exist in a read only text file so i wouldn't fret too much...Not sure what you mean by the question "what A/V app do you run ? ?"

If you're asking for my Anti-Virus (A/V);
I use Zone Alarm Anti-Virus + Firewall (Free)

If you're asking about my audio video (A/V);
I use Creative Sound Blaster Live (driver version 5.12.01.124) for the audio It's old and has the last updates I could find.
I use an ATI Diamond S120 128mb DDR Radeon 9550 Graphics card.

I understand what you're saying about "nothing Malicious can exist.......", but it goes beyond the reading of those installer "read only" files. I can't right click and scan (from the Context menu) any folder in My Docs. with MalwareBytes w/o getting that Run-Time error, yet I can run scans of the same items with Zone Alarm Anti-Virus. I never had this problem until I ran all of these scans yesterday and would like to fix the problem.

It's very possible that MBAM won't scan those file types...visit their Forums and see...I'll check it out, but like I said, in the past I've individually scanned not only folders in My Docs., but also all downloaded and saved installers/programs before I run them.

Don't know if I NEED to create another post for this but I'll ask and see what happens.....

I've noticed in my registry many folders of programs I've tried and removed with Add/Remove Programs. These are under HKEY- local Machine - Software. My question is.... can I right click on those folders and delete them w/o any problems? They are not listed in Add/Remove, Msconfig Startup tab, and I've deleted them through C: All Programs and C: Docs & Settings > (each individual User and All Users) Application Data folders.
My CCleaner and Auslogics Reg. cleaners never remove any of these unused/uninstalled Reg. folders. Also, none of the scans I ran yesterday (that led to this Run-Time error problem) picked up on any of these folders.Consider this Run-Time error383 thread as solved. I decided to uninstall MalwareBytes and reinstall it and during the uninstall I got a message that something was missing and it couldn't uninstall the program. Right then I knew there was a problem with the installed version so I downloaded another copy of the installer and installed it over the first one, then deleted every thing and reinstalled it again and the problem was solved... the program scanned every thing I tried to scan when I was getting the error message. Wish I'd thought about a possible 'bad install' sooner.

Thanks Patio for your time and help....... Grayghost Good to hear you are fixed up...

Solve : Hide icons from my dest top?

Answer»

Hi,

I like my desktop to look nice and pretty, how can I hide all these short cut icons from my desk top?

Thanks

RickWell if you don't use the shortcuts, then delete them. I have a FOLDER on my desktop titled "shortcuts" and put all the icons in there if that's any help to you!Desktops aren't meant to lookt pretty. I could send you a photo of myself, though..

You can set Desktop to hide shortcuts when it's in WEBPAGE mode.

Right click on the Desktop -> properties -> Desktop (Tab) -> Adjust Desktop -> Webpage tab

Follow the instructions.right click the desktop and select the arrange icons by option then select show desktop icons to get your icons back just reverse what you have done this applies to winxp?....no MENTION alas of operating system?...With Windows XP Professional I use all transparent icons, so all you SEE is the description and you just have to double-click above the line, where the icon would show normally.

If you need help to remember the position of your icon layout I use Layout.zip

Solve : I can't delete an icon in My Computer folder?

Answer» HI,

I uninstalled a CAMERA driver from my PC since I returned the camera. The driver put an icon in the My Computer folder as an external drive. Now it left this icon in the My Computer folder. No matter what I do, it won't go away. It won't let me drag it to the recycle bin. I went in to the regestry with RegEdit, but I can't find it. Does anyone know where all these icons in the My Computer folder are kept?

Richard. If it gives you the message "access denied" when trying to delete it, then that means this "icon" is still being used by a running process. Reboot your computer and before the windows screen starts to load up tap the F8 key a couple times and then select 'safe mode" (when you are at that screen it's self-explanitory). In safe mode the computer only runs the processes needed to run the computer (this will be the fastest your computer will EVER get). When you are in safe mode, nothing can be using your "icon" so you can delete whatever you want.Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I tried to boot it up in safe mode, and tried to drag the icon to the recycle bin, it still won't let me. This is driving me crazy! Where are the icons stores in the PC, do you know?

Richard.Depending on the kind of STORAGE Windows views your camera as, can you not remove it from (Right click) My Computer -> Manage -> Disk management?you may uninstall the camera program but it may leave bits BEHIND....search the program folder or the windows folder for the program...or download a cleaner like system mechanic from iolo.com....

Solve : XP asked to repair at windows setup?

Answer»

I bought a computer with windows XP installed on it...however, i used this computer for about 8months on the internet..it got a virus Agobot 29 and 30 which AVG seemed not to tackle...then all of a sudden it started showing a blue screen with 0x0000000A stop error and something about dumping......with this error screen i would restart computer by unpluging power cable and it would restart normally...until one morning it went dumping then when i unplugged the cable it showed that there were errors in the config.sys and that i was to insert a windows XP cd and that i could press the R to try and repair files at windows setup..... since i do not have the XPcd is there no other way to repair this error without loosing my DATA??

pls advice There is no other way. You may have gotten a recovery DISK with your PC, which you can use INSTEAD of the Windows XP CD.

Unplugging the power whilst the computer was on (Even with the fatal eception) caused files to become corrupted. That is why you should never turn off or reset your computer when Windows is not properly shut down.

If you have a virus and you cannot remove it, but it is detecte d by your virus scanner, scan in safemode.http://athena.uwindsor.ca/units/its/website/itshd_downloads.nsf/0/87ca9cacacf55b6d85256e9b0054a575?OpenDocument uplug your pc from the net to RUN it...and disable system restore also..

Why do you not boot from the Windows XP CD?

SET your CD-ROM as the first boot DEVICE in the BIOS.Believed that was not posible. Anyhow cant get the cpu to recogenize the keyboard. COULD i have done something wrong when formatting?
Should the cpu always detect the keyboard when i switch the unit on, i mean when i try to get into the bios.

Formatting your Hard Disk Drive should not affect your keyboard in anyway. You could even use the keyboard without having a HDD installed.

Yes, the computer should always recognize the keyboard.

Hello Juan, Is this XP Home or XP Professional? You may know that the two versions use two DIFFERENT Sets of XP bootdiskettes.

This ALSO depends on which Service pack number your XP CD has.

At this time you should be using a slipstreamed XPSP2 CD which you have burned yourself after using AutoStreamer 1·0 to merge the files on your XPCD with either the Free SP2 CD from Microsoft or with the 266·1Mb SP2 download from their download site.

Normally you should be able to change the BIOS settings to be able to boot directly to the XPCD but with some bios's this is not supported and so you are told that you have to use the diskettes.

This is NOT true.

To make it really easy you just NEED to download oldbios.exe , from http://ebcd.pcministry.com to your hard-drive and double-click on it with a formatted floppy in the A drive to make an Oldbios Bootdiskette.

Now you can put the Oldbios Bootdiskette in the A drive of your own computer and the XP CD in the CD-ROM drive and when you start up you will see "Press any key to boot from the CD ... "

Windows will start to load.

When you have the choice delete all drives and start over making the C: drive exactly 8192Mb (8·0Gb) and then make up to three Logical drives.

For example D for the My Documents folder, E for Email, and F as an archive drive, which is also big enough for video.

Format all drives to NTFS and start installing.

128Mb RAM is way too low for most purposes. What operating system are you using?Scan for viruses, SPYWARE and trojans.

Better maintain your PC.I had the same problem with my computer running slower than slow and it turned out to be the round IDE cables that came with the motherboard. I replaced tham with ribbon cables and that solved the problem.

1. Depends how far is "out of town". TATA is your ISP, it will only work on their network (locations in India).

2. iPAD's have built-in wifi & can be used on any free wifi hotspot, anywhere; i.e., your hotel.
3. No. I don't think you understand the DIFFERENCE between wifi & 4G (or 3G).

I don't have an iPAD. All models have wifi, some also have 4G, your PHOTON+ takes the place of 4G.

"Can I get any HDD for the replacement or any specific requirement/factor I need to consider. I want to try a bigger spacious HDD. Is there any utilities which I can run to identify the options I have"

Many thanks.
Your HDD: 75GB Western Digital WDC WD800BD-22LRA0 (SATA)
Speccy says SATA, but it's not!! It's ATA (IDE).

Better to get a new computer than a new hard drive.

The disk type WD800BD-22LRA0 seems to be an early SATA disk with optional Molex 4 pin power connection see http://www.impactcomputers.com/wd800bd-22lra0.html for example, and definitively WD's own data sheet (p3) http://www.wdc.com/en/library/sata/2879-701277.pdf
On searching for this model, however, most of hits are for downloading drivers which refer to this model as "ATA" - maybe in confusion with (Serial) "ATA"

After sometime I installed new window x.p and found that now I also cannot access my data even logging via ADMINISTRATOR. Please give me some solution so that i can recover my data back.

Thank You

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I think i'll pass on this ONE...Sorry brother I didn't get your Point. Please clarify...If you did not create a Data Recovery Agent when you originally encrypted the data, it is LOST forever. For this reason, the NTFS data encryption feature is sometimes called "delayed RECYCLE bin", to describe the very high probability of data loss if an inexperienced user encrypts his or her files.

I have an SSID , and a security key to connect to the ISP , but I dont understand WEP , WPA , and the older terminology on the xp system.

Im not exactly a beginner as I use COMPUTERS and TABLETS to make MUSIC and promote etc... but all this network malarkey leaves me scratching my head.
Would be very grateful of some help.

Have a look at the LINK below, normally a .bin file is used by the updater application to update the firmware, so you wouldn't open it directly in Windows. There's a link on the page below to download a firmware updater, not SURE what model of Sansa you have so if it's on the list, I WOULD try using that.

However, I have tried this but when I try to do an update i get a muessage that says there is no Sansa Device connected and that is because i KEEP getting a message on my my Sansa MP3 player that reads " Load main IMAGE failed: Switch to recovery mode" I switch to recovery mode as suggested but when I try to do the update i get the message that nothing is attached !!!?!?! The Sansa MP3 Player is not being recognized ?!!!???! I WOULD like to copy my favorites list to a folder for safe keeping, and send that folder to a flash drive. What web browser are you using?I USE MozBack for FireFox and ThunderBird...IE 8, And My server is Comcast.Google Drive Folder.Click File - Import and Export - Export to a file. You can then export your favourites, and cookies if you wish, to any folder you like, and import them later by choosing Import INSTEAD of Export.
Hope this helps. Quote from: CALUM on August 19, 2013, 02:38:25 AM

Solve : Recovering lost text from Word document?

Answer»

I need help with this document. It's damaged. Until now, I only thought that it could not be copied or successfully submitted onto a website. Now, however, I found out it's worse: I opened the document, and some of the TEXT is gone. In place of it are squares, symbols, and a ton of column and page breaks. The document never HAD any columns in the first place! It was a simple document, words only, Times New Roman font, just one indented paragraph after another, with a few ~'s here and there. That was it.

A huge chunk of the text is gone. I opened Microsoft Word help, and entered in "recovering lost text" and pressed search, and it TOLD me this:

Recover the text from a damaged document
Learn about preventing loss of work.

On the Tools menu, CLICK Options, and then click the General tab.

Make sure the Confirm CONVERSION at Open check box is selected, and then click OK.

Click Open .

In the Files of type box, click Recover Text from Any File.

Open the document as usual.

I did all of that, and it ALMOST worked...almost! Except it didn't give me back ALL of my document. It gave me back about half of it, minus the chunk that I really wanted back; it didn't give me back any of the stuff I didn't already have, because, you see, the text gone is about half through the document, and it goes for a few pages with the squares, symbols, and column/page breaks, then it repeats some paragraphs I had at the document beginning, and then it skips to the end of the document. Meanwhile, this huge, pages-long chunk of the document is missing!

Does anyone know why/how this might have happened, and/or, most IMPORTANTLY, how I can recover the lost text?

I would very grateful for some help. Thank you.Hi,

Which Microsoft Words do you use? Which formatte did you save in? What extension, .emz? The wired charaters are ASCII codes, sounds like it is a compressed file and when you try to open it, it wasn't decomperssed.

Solve : Internet Access in Win2K Pro?

Answer»

Please help...I WANT to restrict a user's access to the Internet. What Service is it that I need to disable if I am using a USB Modem in Windows 2000 Pro. Is this the best way to achieve this, what other users are likely to be affected??

Yes, you GUESSED it, frustration with an offspring!!! The best way is probably via your Internet Service Provider. You will have a logon name and password - change the password and don't give it to those you don't want to have access.

If you have set up accounts for each of the users, you can use the master account to disable any of the others.Want more control over your children's user accounts in XP? How about the days of the week and time of day they are allowed to logon? Should work in 2K and NT also.

Follow these steps:

1. Run the CMD command from the Run menu.

2. TYPE in
net user xxxxxx

(where xxxxxx is the username you want to edit)

The command displays the user's properties, all of them, not just the ones MS wants you to see. For instance, you can see when was his or her last logon, when he or she have CHANGED their password etc.

3. Type in
net user xxxxxx /times:s-f,8-19

(where xxxxxx is the username you want to edit, the s-f means Sunday to Friday and 8-19 means the hours of the day when you want the user to be able to log-on)

Type in
net user xxxxxx /times:all

to get the user logon hours back to default.

You can set specific times for specific days.

Solve : Windows Update blocked?

Answer»

I'm not able to access new UPDATES via Windows Update. Something is blocking my computer from it - I hear several clicks, although I've allowed pop-ups on this site. This happened after I had to do a SYSTEM Recovery, although this hadn't been a problem before System Recovery.type msconfig in the run box and enable all microsoft services and try the update site again..Unfortunately, all microsoft services were already ENABLED, so I'm still not able to get updates off the site. Any other ideas? What does the webpage say?

If you wish to edit services, do so from services.msc not msconfigIf you are already using SpyBot SD, AdAware SE & SpywareBlaster to keep your system clean, just try deleting cookies, FILES & off-line content & history.

Then try the Update site again.

Solve : IE home page problem?

Answer»

A friend of mine is having problems with his computer. He's RUNNING XP and IE6. Whenever I open IE, the opening page address is "about:blank". I can change the home page and it will stay like that until IE is closed. The next time I open it, the same page re-appears. I've installed Spybot and removed all spyware and ADWARE. Any ideas about what's happening here?did you change the homepage in controlpanel > internet options? ..... i had the same problem once... Try scanning with spybot S&D agian... try even tojanhunter..... www.trojanhunter.comSuperDave.....Your friends pc is infected with a browzer hijacker... To get rid of it you should D/l ......hijackthis and CW Shredder ........get them here and do some reading up on hijackers....
http://www.net-integration.net/tools/hijackthis.html
let us KNOW how you make out

dl65 Thanks guys/gals. I will try all of these starting with changing the home page from the control panel. I've seen a computer which was hijacked before and what I find strange is that this one is going to "about:blank" as the home page. Usually a hijacker will direct the home page to a page of their own choosing. I've have run Spybot twice and even ran a scan with his own anti-virus program. I'll let you all know how I make out.Either this>http://www.wilderssecurity.net/bhblaster.html or shredder is what you need.SuperDave.......It's not so strange.......I had a go round with a hijacker a while back and it was the "about blank"
page that is changed to ......

run hijackthis and then check each log entry and then remove the bad entries .....and the issue will be resolved

let us know how you fare .

dl65 I checked his computer tonight and found 42 trojans with trojan hunter but I can't find all the files to delete them. Is it possible some of these are in hidden files? Are there any trojan cleaners in FREEWARE?SuperDave........Have you made sure that when you search for those items.....that the search is set up to check hidden folders.....click advanced and be sure that all are ticked. If you are doing it manually......go to control panel......click on file options...click the view tab...scroll down and tick show hidden files and tick show hidden system files ( not recommended).

If the homepage is still being changed ...run highjackthis and post the log here.....let us look at it...
perhaps we can help.

dl65 I tried trojanhunter on my own computer last night and it found two trojan files and cleaned them so I'm going to give it another try with this program. One interesting thing, while I was running the scan a pop-up from my anti-virus told me that it had found and disinfected a virus. I wonder how that got in?anti-virus told me that it had found and disinfected a virus. I wonder how that got in? superdave
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Via system restore..?and connected to the net?I worked on the computer this morning and I was successful in cleaning all the trojans and spyware using SpyBot and Trojanhunter but the home page is still being hijacked. I know there is still something there because I'm getting pop-ups even though I've installed SP2 and Pop-up Stopper. I'm going to try CWshredder and Hijackthis the next chance I get and I'll post the Hijackthis log here so you all can have a look at it.It is definately a spyware/adware problem. Go to www.pctools.com and get registry mechanic and/or spyware doctor. They will probably find much more viruses then spybot (personal experience). They are unlicensed versions but they do find the viruses. You have to go and remove the viruses from the registry yourself. (or you can just search for a crack for the programs that way the "full licensed version" will delete it for you.)I did some more work on his computer and cleared up all the trojan files using CWshredder and trojan hunter. I then install SpyWareGuard and ran Trojan Hunter again. This seems to have fixed one problem; The hijacking of the home page but there is still some spyware/adware in the Registry and I didn't feel comfortable enough to mess around with the Registry on someone else's computer. One interesting thing did happen. I ran "Hijackthis" and sent a copy of the log report to my home address so I could share it on this forum. When I got home, I discovered that the file had been deleted from the message by my internet server because it contained the Bloodhound.Exploit.6 virus. I'm wondering where this virus CAME from. Is it possible that it is on his computer even though he has Panda anti-virus protection with a firewall? There are programs that can both clean and make backups of your registry.

Advanced System Optimizer V2

You can then freely remove Registry entries once you have made backups.SuperDave......Re the virus.....I would think that the virus came from his machine.......And I don't dont know if Panda is configured to scan outgoing mail...I'll bet it isn't.
The firewall would not prevent a virus.

Solve : MS ending XP support in April?

Answer»

With end of support and updates for XP, what can us end users do?My old Compaq tower w/XP is used to do everything on my Office Jet 6200 (print, scan copy). I also have an HP p1102w Laser jet used for my B&W text. But after support ends I'll be afraid to get online with the Compaq. My HP laptop has Win 7 with a driver for the OJ "included" but all you can do is BASIC printing and non of the other features of this AiO, no one else has drivers (MS nor HP) for 7. Only current option is put out another $400 for ANOTHER AiO printer-stupid since this one is fine.
Anybody got an idea?? I'd like to find a resolution before MS pulls the plug-which is hard to imagine since MANY corporations and Government departments still use XP from my understanding.
Thanks responders. You can buy EXTENDED support. If not from Microsoft, there are others that will help you for a price. But be prepared to pay more that the $400 for a new printer.Well first of all April 2014 is not a day when Windows XP will stop operating, its just the last date that MS will support patching security issues with it.

I am a gov employee and there are lots of XP systems still in use and they are well protected behind very good modern firewalls. 99.9% of them are user only privilege accts in which to install anything it has to be approved by the higher ups in IT, and they have so much protection software running on them locally that they are slower than they would be without this protection. But there are other systems that are older than Windows XP that still serve a purpose and get everything done on a daily basis. I cant speak of specifics since its all confidential, but we have systems still running on Windows 2000 Pro and Server as well as NT 4 and OpenVMS, also many flavors of Linux distros in low risk uses or isolated networks which can not be hacked into.

In my home I have 3 computers that are running Windows XP SP3. I am not worried about these systems since I dont use them for banking, taxes, or ecommerce.

One of the 3 systems though I may be upgrading to Windows 7 in the near future when I can find some cheap RAM to bring my daughters computer above 1GB. I have tested Windows 7 on 1GB RAM and while it will run, it runs better on 2GB, and she is happy currently with Windows XP running on 1GB RAM. The only issue she hit with this system was that IE was not cutting it so I upgraded her to Firefox BROWSER. She was having issues trying to play Flash Games on Windows XP SP3 with latest IE for that OS and Firefox was the fix. Also her hard drive is just a 40GB IDE HDD and Windows 7 would be tight on that drive after updates etc, so I PICKED up a 120GB IDE HDD on clearance as a refurb for $10.

As far as not buying a new computer and moving forward with a system that I would consider secure for banking etc beyond April 2014, if you can get use to Linux this is an option. However if you want to play games meant for Windows, because Microsoft Owns DirectX, all games for Linux have to operate without it and the gaming performance is not as good without DirectX on games that I have tried using OpenGL with.

My Linux Distro of choice is Linux Mint KDE which I am running 2 systems on, one with version 13 and the other with version 15. These run flawless on older computers such as the Pentium 4 2.0Ghz with 1GB RAM and 60GB HDD which is my main Linux box, however 1GB RAM is pretty much the bare minimum for this distro to operate ok. They also have distros that are available for older hardware that require less RAM such as Linux Mint 15 XFCE which will run on a system with say 512MB RAM well, but lacks features of the full blown KDE version.

Driver support for older hardware is also very good today vs in yesteryears. Setting up your printer would probably work without any issues however you might need to use a generic driver to get it to work than the one that was designed for the printer etc. I actually dont print anymore like I use to so I print to a PDF creator and save everything that needs to be SAVED as a file instead. If it needs to be printed, i can thumb drive it and plug it into my windows machine and print.

So I am not worried about 4/2014 and I will continue to use Windows XP on older systems that otherwise cant or wont run very well on a newer OS. But if it were the only computer in my home and I needed a secure computer and didnt game much and didnt want to spend any money, I'd download Linux Mint or another version of your choice and install it to the computer and use that going forward to have secure computing without the fear that a new flaw is exploited and there is no patch for it. Linux Mint and Ubuntu are the most commonly used distros. I went from Fedora to Ubuntu and then to Mint, and I like Mint the best of them all. Coming from Windows , Mint seems the easiest to get use to from people that I have sared my CD's and DVDs of these distros with to try out.

Here is another idea.
Use a partition manager to open up some space on your big hard drive and in stall a virgin XP sp3 on it. Get all the updates and then make an image of it and keep it where you can find it later. That way you have a fresh copy with the updates ready if y you ever have a system crash. Quote from: SandisDad on September 06, 2013, 07:06:30 PM

With end of support and updates for XP, what can us end users do?
EITHER continue to use XP, or don't continue to use XP.

Quote
But after support ends I'll be afraid to get online with the Compaq.
I suppose that is reasonable. Though even with support and security updates, it's important to remember that those security problems exist regardless of whether they were patched or not. For example, take- say, the last set of security updates patched on XP with Windows Update. Every single one of those patches fixes a security issue that has existed since at least the release of SP3. Most of the exploits and hacks for an OS are well known long before they get patched- in fact they usually only get patched after a well-meaning researcher or other individual discovers the exploit (or it starts to spread like wildfire). This is not Windows or Microsoft-Specific, either. It's just the way security patches/updates go, really.

Are you certain? IT sounds more like you are looking for "value-added" software to perform those extra functions. For example, I have windows 7 and borrowed my brothers Lexmark X5650 AIO; I hadn't installed it before. It installed as a printer. However, I was able to scan using the built-in Scanner/fax Tool in Windows 7, as well as with Photoshop. The packaged software for XP included a bunch of software for the different printer tasks, but they aren't necessary to actually use the various features, since other software is usually available to use them.

Note the "support" dropping just means there won't be new security updates released. Existing hotfixes and security patches since SP3 will still be available through windows Update. (If memory serves even windows 98 still has some Windows Update capability).
BC, two questions.
What about updates to older DOT NET stuff?
And also the older C++ run-time stuff?
Many XP PCs out there use old software written awhile back that depends on the older run time t hings. Would the updates get to XP owners?
Just asking.

support for all versions of the .NET Framework prior to 3.5 SP1 Ended July 12th, 2011. Starting with that version their product lifecycle changed to match the OS version they were distributed with. 3.5 SP1 was included with Windows 7, and so will continue to be supported until Windows 7 is End-Of-Lifed. .NET 4 is distributed with Windows 8 and thus will continue to be supported until that is EOL'd, etc.

These products are separate from Windows XP. XP being EOL'd means there aren't updates for Windows XP, it won't completely cut off Windows Update.

Solve : Installed Windows XP onto a Dell laptop but "wireless" option doesn't show up un?

Answer»

I had the post earlier of the laptop I found, a Dell XPS M1210, that would require a new OS installation. I had a disk for Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 1, with the key number. I tried to boot it up and it said it couldn't because the version of XP on the laptop was newer. It said I could but would lose all data and programs, I figured that was OK. So I went and installed it, but "wireless" doesn't show up when you right click on Network connections. And to make things worse, I'm no longer able to connect to the internet through the Ethernet cable I had hooked up and was using previously. I figured maybe I did need a newer version of XP, so since I don't have an internet CONNECTION anymore, I burned the program Autopatcher 2007 to a disk and ran it on the laptop. But it still shows the same thing under Network Connections. And even though it was suppose to include service pack 2 or 3, on the laptop under system info it still says service pack 1. How do I get the wireless option on Windows XP? And I have a feeling the wireless reader I think Dell had on their computers, Intel wireless, I may have deleted with the new OS installation? Also, to boot the first version of XP, I had to change the boot order to go to disk first. It is still asking me this in a black screen but can't remember how t oswitch it to not go there first, if that will make a difference. I hope this makes sense and isn't too confusing. Anybody have the answer, and hopefully you can dummy it down enough that I can progress and give updates where I'm at. Thanks http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/xps-M1210 Drivers for XP... burn them to a CD or DVD if you have DVD ROM, or copy them to a USB stick since USB should be functional under universal driver and then you can manually install the network drivers and anything else that is missing or running generic drivers to replace with correct ones for better performance.I assume this will fix the wireless issue, I also forgot to mention that on the desktop, the only icon that showed up was the Recycle Bin. Is this a different issue? I guess I will do it tomm. and find out. ThanksYour network drivers are missing. The link that Dave has given you will allow you to download them (obviously from ANOTHER computer) and install them.

Desktop - right click on the desktop and choose properties. Then either choose the windows classic theme to get all your icons or instead choose the desktop tab then press the desktop button and check the boxes for the icons you want to see.You need to make sure you have all the proper drivers from his link as well. On Dell laptops SOMETIMES the radio turns off during a reload so you need to check that as well. But most likely its the drivers. But just in case here a link.

http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?docid=429969
I was able to find some of the drivers and was able to install them on the laptop, except for the Audio and Video drivers because they said the device wasn't there. (I must have deleted that also with the clean XP installation) I was able to get wireless internet access, so I don't know how to update XP, I thought I'd run Dell diagnostics ONLINE, the complete version and find out what else was missing. An early part of the scan is Dell System Detect. It warns you that if your computer doesn't have it, you may have to download it, and a link appears. It came up for me but when I clicked open, it said windows couldn't find a program to open it, and I didn't know where to save it. Any ideas how to get this downloaded, I think the Dell checks online will help a lot. I tried to download it from another site also but got an error, I can't recall. What was the extension of the program it tried to download?I'm not sure it just called it dellsystemselect[1]

Solve : Laptop screen starts O.K. then goes black?

Answer»

Hi, newbee and computer almost illiterate oldy here.
I have searched the questions in the forum but no answer matches the symptoms.
The laptop is an old RM and what is happening is that when the computer is turned on, the screen comes up NORMALLY until the password box is displayed when the screen goes black. If I shine a torch on the screen I can log in and the usual Icons come up. Pressing the brightness buttons MAKES no difference and plugging in an external display doesn't work. It seems to be something in software rather than faulty backlight unless this FAULT could be driver of course. ANYONE any ideas please? Try to boot it up in safe mode (hit the F8 button during the boot process). If you dont run into the same problem there then we can start diagnosing, if you have the same problem, might be a hardware issue.Hi Chris,
Thanks for the help. Just tried that, it STILL does the same thing.
PeteAAAAH!! Done it wrong. Started up in Safe Mode and it's working. Thinking about this I did download a programme to open Bin files but it wasn't successful. Computer went wrong some time after this. Have now tried to uninstall that program and after the screen says that it is uninstalled the system locks up. It tried to connect to internet after uninstall but I refused to allow it as I think it was the uninstalled program trying to connect. I hope that makes sense. Try to take it back to a good restore point before you had the issue.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084Hi Chris, I followed the link and the problem has been solved. Thank you very much for your patience and advice.
PeteNot a problem, glad you got it fixed.Hi Pete, I think it'll happen again because it sounds like the graphics chip is faulty. If plugging in an external monitor does nothing then you will have to troubleshoot the chip. There's a guide at http://www.tekmoz.com/laptop-repair-training-course-troubleshooting-and-repairing-laptop-screens/ Quote from: SkinnyKing on October 25, 2013, 07:43:51 PM

What? So you are recommending complete screen dis-assembly using a poorly written website that basically says to look on YouTube?

Well, a Googlel search shows it's a known issue. I'd suggest you contact Asus and see if they have any thoughts.

The problematic driver is atkosdmini.dll. Here's another thread on the problem: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/663529-bluescreen-video-playback-other-woes.html

Solve : GMX Email?

Answer»

When trying to reply or send an email on GMX the window "SELECT FILE to upload by images.gmx.com" opens and i cannot send or do anything with the mail. if i close the window it just reopens when i start to type - how can i stop this? Are you accessing GMX via web BROWSER or an email client installed on your computer? If an email client, which one?

LET's get this straight? If you close the email window and open, for example, WordPad and start typing in WordPad,, your email opens again. Is that right? In other words, typing in a program that has nothing to do with your email causes your email to open? Is that what you're saying?

Solve : XP Admin password problem?

Answer»

Hello

I am trying to join my XP Pro PC to a Workgroup and need to change the computer name. It won't allow me to do this because, I think, it wants me to log-on as administrator.

If I go to the Start-Up screen and then to Ctrl + Alt + DEL, type in 'Administrator' and then press OK (with no password), I GET the message: 'Unable to log you on because of an account restriction'.

What restriction could that be, please? I thought you could log on in XP as an Administrator without a password (unless I have set one in the past which I doubt?).

How do I resolve this question, please?

Many thanks.

High1http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290109

Try safe mode admin access, then promote your user account to admin privileges and log off admin in safe mode and you should be able to join as yourself.OK, Dave - many thanks.

Let me try it and thanks for the link.

High1I tried it without using an admin password and it allowed me to this time! It is not part of my workgroup. Surprisingly, the XP computer is wireless.

I just basically did this (ignoring the references to Ethernet and Administrator):

Quote

To add a wired (Ethernet) computer running Windows XP to a network

Plug the computer into a hub, switch, or ROUTER and then turn it on. (If your home has Ethernet wiring and you have a jack in the room where the computer is, you can plug the computer into the Ethernet jack instead.)

Log on to the computer as an administrator.

Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

Click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.

If the workgroup name is not WORKGROUP, change the name to WORKGROUP, and then click OK.

If you had to change the workgroup name, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Restart the computer, and then continue with the steps below.

click Start, and then click My Network Places.

In the left PANE, under Network Tasks, click View workgroup computers.

Choose the computer from the list that appears, and then click Connect.

Thanks again, Dave.

In Windows XP I did quick format of an external drive. But one file was still there.
System Volume Information.
Why is it still there?
Later, I deleted it with computer management, created a new partition, same SIZE. TOOK a LONG time to format 160 GB partition. No sign of the LONE file. What is going on here?

Curious minds need to know. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309531

Is this what you are referring to?Yes, that's it. Now I know and feel so much better. Yup... Not a virus..

Solve : no image when uploaded to send in hotmail?

Answer»

I can any one help I posted the following on another site, as yet not solved:
no thumb nails in email attachments XP outlook

my p.c. is fine, have been trying to help a friend sending a photo as an attachment when uploaded to the e/mail mine show as a thumbnail of the image but when my friend uploads an image to a e-mail he can see a landscape i see the same when i receive his e-mail
can you help thanks

Hi thanks for your reply, my p.c. is xp i use maxthon cloud browser (i don,t use internet explorer because as soon as it opens it freezes) I ALSO use Google chrome . My friends is xp uses internet explorer. I mentioned that all e sees is a landscape. I think it's the icon windows picture and fax VIEWER uses. to have a look I put a photo on my desk top and clicked properties, open with : the icon is very small but i think its the windows picture and fax viewer. In E mails I clicked new, attachment from file and uploaded it and i could see the thumb nail of the photo.

when he receives he can see the thumbnail of the photo. The problem is his P.C. when he uploads the image to the e-mail he cannot see the photo, neither can I when I receive It.

I sent my step daughter a photo and she sent one back no problem, she is using xp and internet explorer and google chrome. My friends P.C. is set to automatically up date.

Hi It' s Monday evening, I cannot got to my friends computer till wednesday however I thought I would
look at my I.E. I done everything that you suggested and looking at the links and doing everything that was suggested. looked at updates. no prioties 11 for windows so I updated it did not take long to down load
speed 100 mbps but 40 minuets to install. restart. Even though I reset I.E. to default I gone through everything.
deleting add ons, passwords history
On my computer I have 2 harddrives: C=270 gb (180 gb free space) D drive: 465 gb (397 gb free space)
D drive has another copy of XP for a backup. 2 gb of ram AMD duel core processor it is a reasonably fast P.C.

C drive: browsers: Maxthon cloud, Google chrome when I'an In outlook, I click new, attachment from file
the file uploads and I can see the picture however in I.E. all I can see is a oblong SHAPE where the picture should be filled with a seanic view mountain on the left and sea shore. Even though I done all the necessary cleaning
downloaded I.E. 8 internet explorer still loads and freezes with a white screen.
I also tried STARTING in safe mode with networking It loaded much faster however the image still does not appear when uploaded into a e-mail.
I also rebooted into drive "d" on there I have firefox which works fine. I.E is the same on the "d" drive
Normally I can fix any problem however this has got me beat, If I cannot fix mine I cannot fix my friends.
His P.C. has XP not much ram however it works fine, he only uses I.E. which is also fine except for this one problem fo not being able to see the photo when it has uploaded into the e-mail

looking at the above questions I have answered them. the 3rd question:
Does the same thing happen when you access your account from the same computer with a different browser?
NO, second question YES in internet explorer
I think the problem is I.E. other browsers are fine, My step daughter used I.E. on her XP machine thats fine

0130 hours tuesday test: maxthon cloud brouser, I sent an e-mail to my wife with photo.
closed maxthon down, opened I.E. all I could get was a white screen - connecting. task manager would not open.
ctlr / alt / delete would not work. pushed start button to switch off!! Restarted control panel removed AVG tool bar. internet explorer opened faster. loged into my wifes e-mails the photo was there.
I clicked new to send to my e-mail address attach file: it attached but could not see the photo.
I loggged out of my wifes. logged on to my E-mail - No, I could not see the photo in the attachment only
the landscape bed time!!

Solve : Outlook Express Locks Up?

Answer»

Clicking on a link or an attachment in OE 6 immediately locks computer up. After escaping OE with the Control, Alt, Del. routine, Internet Exploror won;t work either. Have to restart computer, then everything ok till TRY it again. Suggestions???What link or attachment ... or is it any link or attachment so its not related to any specific content?

If its related to say PDF links and attachments only then it may be that you need adobe reader etc. More info is needed to point you in RIGHT direction.Any link or attachment, does not APPEAR to be product linked, ALREADY have Adobe reader and opened pdf files just fine until this problem started.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398839

I would try the above linked procedure to see if this corrects it.

Solve : Windows XP Reinstallation Difficulties?

Answer»

My computer will not boot to the screen where the start button shows :/ when I power it up, it says operating system not found. Here is what occurred step by step. maybe it will better explain the problem.

Boot Manager:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2.Choose your language settings, and then CLICK "Next".
3.Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system ADMINISTRATOR or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

Now when I put in the Windows Disc, it will make it as far as the screen that says

Confirmation of restore procedure. all data in HARD drive C will be lost.
Are you sure you wish to proceed? If yes press y, if no press n.

Following this, I press Y and after a several second pause, this error comes up

"Internal Stack Overflow caused session to halt. Change STACK setting in CONFIG.SYS"

From there I go to A:\"edit config.sys"

I then change the STACKS as stated to do but when I go to File>Save As>ENTER I get this as a response

General Error while assessing file A:\config.sys

I hope its something that can be fixed :/
