Does this happen immediatly when you connect to the Internet? Be more specific..i dont no il ask my mom its her prolbem. but i dont think so its all the time

Have your mother tell you the specific details of the problem and her hardware specifications and Operating System.justin....Is it possible that you have the links set up to OPEN or react with a single click and Mom is double clicking and so things open twice ?

Must be in.. Nevermind.

You didn't quite answer my post.no its set to doble clickJustin, I'd love to help you with this problem (hey, I'm a computer geek, and proud!) but I havn't got a clue as to what the heck you're on about.

[HERE THY SERMON BEGINS]

You're 16 (according to your profile), and presumably you have been taught how to construct basic sentences and how to spell simple words at school. It really is so much easier to follow through with what you're saying when you actually put some effort in.

I'm not saying you have to dot every 'i' and remember the UMLAUT on every 'ë', but at least try and not write like a complete donkey.

[HERE ENDETH THY SERMON]

Anyways, I think there are two things you should really check here. Firstly, go into the Control Panel and have a look at the Mouse settings. It could be that the double-click speed may be set so low that it's interpreting two completely seperate clicks as one double-click.

My other suspicion is a faulty mouse - perhaps a bad connection? The quickest way to CONFIRM or rule this out is to borrow another mouse and plug it in instead. If the fault re-occurs, it's likely the original mouse is okay and that it's a software thing.I still THINKS he needs new glasses.get you mother to post her problem...stereo talking does not WORK...or clean the mouse..

You should really have installed SP2 immediately after installing XP or you should have slipstreamed SP2 togehter with the files on your XP CD and burned a new XPSP2 CD using AutoStreamer 1·0

Now you have a messy install.

Solve : Erased Hard Drive Can't Connect?

Answer»

I can't connect to the internet.
I downloaded a PROGRAM to erase my hard drive and I need software for WIRELESS to connect. Then you will have to obtain such software from the NIC's MANUFACTURER website. What is NIC manufacturer?
Do you mean Microsoft wireless?NETWORK INTERFACE card.

I donot know what the manufacturer of your network card is.

You should. Check either the box or the card it's self.

Or does this concern a Wireless router? Then properly configure it using the manual and/or your ISP's manual.

Have any of the board got experience of implimenting/running Windows Software Update SERVICES.

I am considering implimenting it on my network (40 computers running W2000 & W2000 Server)

What is your opinion of it ?Uh-uh! Any software update that is to be deployed on the network should be downloaded to a TEST MACHINE and thoroughly tested under all CONDITIONS before deployment. Otherwise, you could wind up with about 40 headaches. I am just reading the 95 page white paper on SUS now.

Staged deployment allows me to download the updates and DEPLOY to a test machine first

Solve : Win NT ... History and Clean?

Answer» Good morning/day/night to you, wherever you may be!
This is my first post on the FORUM, so please bear with me!

Ok, at home I feel fairly comfortable with my XP Home (SP2) package, but at work it's a different matter.

Work System: Win NT SP6a (not admin status), with IE6.0
First thing to note is that I don't work in the country in which I live. This shouldn't matter (Win NT is the same wherever I guess), but I have to have my salary paid into a bank account in the country where I work. I then transfer the money home using the banks online facility. This is part of my problem ...

My computer will be exchanged for a better one soon, and I am accutely aware that when I clear my History and Delete File/Cookies etc in "Internet History", I do not believe that all ... ALL ... items are cleaned out.

Unfortunately, I do not have admin status and I have noticed one of the folders I cannot access (C:Temp) growing steadily in size over a period of months (I can still get to the properties with a right-click).

So to my question, how do I clean out everything about my history and temp files, while not having admin status?

I am TOLD that there may be a way in DOS (if I hit F8 at boot etc).
Unfortunately I have never worked in DOS and I don't even know if it can be done.
How is this done?
(step by step laymans terms please!!!)
What can go wrong?

I am just a little concerned about my personal data when this computer lands in someone else's hands!

My apologies if this has been posted before. I have checked the Forum using the "Search" facility but I drew a blank.

Thanks for you help!

Change the hard-drive and take the old one with you is the best way. But you could also download Eraser where there is an option to make an erasure bootdiskette.

When the bootdiskette has been made just put it in the A: drive start the computer and follow the instructions. It claims to scrub all data off all DRIVES automatically.Hi Mac

Ok, found it here ... http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/ and download here ... http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/download.shtml.

I was going to do something like this (I use cyberscrub at home) but it involves installing any program I want to use - but I don't have admin rights.

If it can't be done by DOS (anybody?), is there an Eraser type of program that does NOT need to be installed?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Paul, You should install Eraser on your home machine and make the bootdisk up there. Just pop it into the A: drive and boot. It will wipe everything off the drive, all drives!

So how are you enjoying Europe? Somewhere warm I hope.
Hi again Mac,

I'm gonna do just that! I fly home tonight (in about 2 hours). I can't wait to get back to my XP! (I never thought I'd say that when I first got it!).

Thanks for the advice!

Europe is ok. I am English anyway, so it's no big deal. But it was cool when I first started working here 18 months ago ... I work in Switzerland in a city called Basel. It's right on the border with both France (where I'm living) and Germany. So I have a lot of variety if you get my drift!

The COLD weather is just starting now, but I look forward to the snow. I may even start skiing one day!

Are most of you guys and girls in the States?
I've been a few times, both personal (Florida and LA) and business (Bridgeport Connecticut, Tampa Fl).

Thanks again to all.
This place is now firmly in my favourites!

Paul

I am still in Belgium Paul, Stuck here it seems. Help!

I am Scottish by my Father.I'm in UK now.
Downloaded eraser, just got to figure out where in the program I can make the disk from!

I was in Brussels a couple of times at the end of last year. It seemed pretty nice ...
But then again ... the grass is always greener etc. etc.

I flit between Switz and the UK all the time

Do you work with computers?

I am an Engineer by training, but I also do undercover work for most governments in the Eurasian group which means NATO and our growing number of Allies and Friends.

Working with computers? I am trying to get the pornography off the internet and put the producers out of business. Not a nice bit of ... "business", more like sex-slavery thanks to all of these hol(e)y men.

Probably have to declare Martial Law to get it done though as there is far to much corruption even in high places within politics.

I can recommend XP Professional with SP2 but look carefully at your security and permissions.

They could do with producing a High security batch file to set all of the permissions automatically.

Administrator and SYSTEM are all I allow, and I also use XP-Antispy. Quote

I donot think all those people that work iniquity.. Uhm, I mean, work in the pornographic business consider themselves 'slaves'

Were you kidding or are you actually trying to do that?I am certainly not "kidding". Pornography is a crime to humanity, an amoral wrong.

Prostitution is a LIFE sentance, not a worthwhile job.

Pimping and drugs are not substitutes for Christian morality and no amount of "catholicism" is ever going to put things right here. And how do you try to put them 'out of business'?

As long as there are human beings with MTV morales, there'll be a demand for pornography.

Solve : Is there anyway to get into my computer if I see these settings????

Answer»

Hello! I have an HP Pavilion a1357c Desktop computer and when I turn on my computer it displays three options. I would just like to know if there is anyway I could get into the computer in safe mode or something. I want to create some system recover disks because I have lost mine. Here is what it displays!
Press "R" for standard PC Recovery options.
Press "F" to format the hard drive and reinstall the original factory settings.
                All data will be lost!
Press "Q" to Quit this menu.

Any suggestions will help!
Thanks for taking the time to read this!Thinking this system has a recovery partition at say D: so if you took option ( F ) it would wipe C: clean and rebuild it back to factory settings. * All personal data would get wiped out!

( R ) looks to be the Repair Option and I would suggest that instead if you have important info you dont want to lose.

*** Once you have the system running healthy again you can either use a tool that HP placed on the system to burn a set of DVD's or a USB Pen Drive with the recovery disk info to have in case the hard drive EVER crashes, or if running Windows 7 can send an image to a USB or External Hard Drive which can be transferred back to a hard drive using a bootable Windows 7 repair disc and then grough through a what can be confusing process to restore. OR use a disk imaging software to create a GHOST image of the C: drive and D: drive if its PARTITIONED with recovery on D: etc, and have that as a system recovery method. I like Ghost 2003 for Windows XP OS which can be purchased cheap on ebay etc. Ghost 2003 does not support VISTA, 7, or 8 though and to back up newer OS you would want to get a modern disk image utility. Many out there and the better ones cost money although there are free options.

Solve : Some help needed?

Answer»

First off I hope this is the right THREAD for this question. I've searched for this problem and found some help, but not one that will work. First off I'm rebuilding a simple system for my daugther so the hardware and software are older. The computer is a pentiem 4 system with a 40gb hard drive and 512 ram. Here is the problem. I'm trying to install windows xp home edition to the system, the cd boots up and everything seems to be work all right. The files load and it states that setup is starting windows. Ok so far so good..however it doesn't do anything...20 mins go by and still nothing. So I decided to restart the computer and they a blue screen is there telling me that windows has shut down( did it really ever start) to protect my computer and files it then states DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Now I looked into ways to fix this, but they all state going into window safe mode, since windows never started or was as far as I can tell never fully loaded that won't work. So my question is how can I tackle this problem if I can't get into safe mode since windows was in the process of loading not on the system..Thanks for any help you can give, if more INFO. is needed just ask and I'll answer them for you. Thanks.
Have you used this same XP Home CD to build this system up prior successfully without any problems? If so, I would get a bootable hard drive utility to MAKE sure the hard drive is healthy as for I have seen hard drives with bad sectors not get though an install and perform these problems. Each drive manufacturer has a downloadable tool that can be burned to a CD and booted to diagnose their drives health. * Also I'd check to make sure the Windows XP Home disc doesnt have any scratches as for it could be an install issue where the disc can not be completely read and so its installing incompletely and hanging through the install. * Also I have seen dirty CD-Roms cause this, so if you have a spare CD Rom to swap with the one in this computer and make sure the jumper is set the same for CS, MA, or SL setting.

Thank you for a fast reply. I tried the suggestions you gave with no luck. About a year ago I loaded xp on to this computer and hard drive with out any problems...so I'm still trying to see if anyone has some other suggestions to get it up and running. Hopefully other suggestions come in and one of them will help. Thank you in advance for any help that is given. Here are some areas to check out.
1. Something is sucking a lot pf juice from the PSU. Remove the floppy ndrive. try another CD-ROM.

2 . The CD itself may have starches or sludge marks. Clean the CD with toothpaste, dry carefully, try again.

3. The hard drive has some issue. Use a program like Gparted to divide the HDD into two partitions The first partition can be about 200 MB. The second can be the rest of the drive. You are going to 'waste' the first 200 MB of the drive. Install on the large partition. (Some hard drives have bad sectors in the first part of the disc.)

Gparted is on Linux live CD.
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
I like puppy, but Ubuntu will do.
http://puppylinux.com/download/
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop

Have a fiend help you download and burn CDs. Well I tried these next few suggestions but still not working. I'm not sure what is still happening you'd think it would be something simple, but so far simple suggestions so far( I know you start small and only two people have suggested) haven't done the TRICK. Well first off thanks for the help so far, but I'm still looking for some more. So please SEND them in so I can get this problem fixed. Thanks in advance for any help that is given.I have heard of this problem with burned Windows CDs that were burned at too high a speed. Of course they are mostly illegal! Assuming this is not the likely cause, DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL can mean hardware problems - motherboard or RAM. I would definitely try another CD if one is available.

I've been try to find another xp disc, but I haven't been able to get one....at least not yet. While I'm trying to do this if anyone has some other suggestions that would be great. I've found that a community of help is the best way to fix a problem. So if you have any ideas please let me know. Agreed, DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is normally down to bad RAM if the system is up and running, but during installation it could be the CD or drive as well. If you don't have access to another XP CD, remove a stick of RAM (if you have more than one) or try another if you have a spare as that's the next most likely cause.Yes, it may install with less RAM.

Also, a poor CD and be copied to a new CD-R and it could work fine. I have had that happen.
I have tried it with different ram..going from 1gig down to 256. it didn't have any affect. I also made a copy of my xp disc and tried that,,,still nothing. I also was able to get a different xp disc and still the same end results. I thank you all for the help so far, b ut must still ask for more. I ask for all of you to dig down deep to see if there is anything else that might be done. Thank you for any help you might pass on to me.Hi, I have just been reading through your dilemma and what you have tried to resolve it. Do you still have this problem?

If so, do you have another drive of any type or size to try in this build?

What if you add the drive into another operating system/ desktop or tower, as a slave and see if windows has actually loaded onto it. ( you wont actually open Windows on the drive, just see how much data is available/used. )

Im running xp home and have a copy of xp pro, some people have told me not to reinstall windows over windows, i just want to know if i will be able to retain all my files off of my c: and d: drives?. the whole reason for all of this is this error message that keeps coming up with "ndis.exe" and .tmp files not being "valid"?
any help ASAP would be GREATLY appreciated. You can uninstall Windows XP by going to the Add/Remove software menu. However, it is advisable that you create backups before attempting to remove Windows XP.

I suggest you use your D Hard Disk Drive or PARTION to store the files you wish to keep and completely format the C: drive.

If you only format the C: directory, your files on D: will remain there.

Solve : Another computer problem?

Answer»

I have this desktop computer, 200MMX pentium, 64MB RAM, 3 hard drives. Win98 SE

Whenever I listen to music on this computer (MP3, WAV) the music lags, slows down and has interferance whenever the master hard drive does anything. What could be CAUSING this problem?Has this problem occured recently?

I suggest you do these things on a regular basis

  • Defragment drives
  • Scan for viruses, spyware and trojans
  • Clean registry
  • Remove redundant files
  • Clean case
  • Clean Internet History, cache and files.

It has been doing it since I got it from my mother. I recently reinstalled win98SE because of PROBLEMS. This computer is pretty old, the motherboard was built in 97.The computer may not be suitable for music and video due to it's slow speed.I had another computer with the exact same hardware, and it ran music fine. My sister also has the same hardware, and it runs music fine too. Maybe there is something wrong with this one.Is the soundcard capable of playing music?

Perhaps you should format and then install Windows if you have not yet done so.I already formatted and reinstalled win98. The soundcard is a SoundBlaster 16. It worked in another computer that I PULLED it from. But it was also built in 1995, it could just be old. But, I also have a SoundBlaster 16 Plug & Play. I will swap it in and see if I have the same results. Can this thing take any more RAM? Maybe you just have too much running at start-up in msconfig. You might try changing the swap file location to a different hard drive. Can get problems like this if it is on a drive that is getting close to full. Here is how to move the swap file location in Windows 98.

1. Click Start / Settings / Control Panel and double click the SYSTEM icon.
2. In System Properties click the performance tab.
Click the Virtual Memory button.
3. Select the option "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings.
4. Specify the hard disk drive where you wish for the win386.swp file to reside.

Solve : PC Intermittant Pauses?

Answer»

Guys and Gals

I have a wee problem - my PC (2.8HGz, 512Mb, XP Pro SP1) seems to pause occassionally, especially after using Outlook and downloading email or occassionally after surfing. When it pauses the internet connection indicator in the taskbar doesn't change (doesn't go away), even though the modem disconnects but nothing else will run.

Clicking on anything gets a brief hour glass then nothing, in this state not even the control+alt+delete will bring anything up. Sometimes the pause lasts a few minutes then the PC suddenly wakes up and does all the things you've clicked on whilst in pause mode.

Have up to date Nortons anti-virus and checked with Adware and SpyBot and nothing FOUND.

To clarify my problem as my writing isn't as clear as I first thought, all goes fine whilst I'm connected to the net for email or browsing. But when I disconnect the connection icon (two linked PC's on right hand side of task bar) doesn't change even though the computer has physically disconnected.

Then when I try and open another application the computer pauses for up to a minute or two before the application opens. Sometimes an application that was already open when I disconnect runs ok, but sometimes not. eg sometimes I can reply to an email in Outlook and sometimes can't - pressing reply will bring up a new window but everything stops when I try and type a reply.

Even the start-close sequence doesn't work - just get an hourglass up for a bit but no closedown.

Hope this makes it a bit easier to understand.

Alan...You should really update to SP2 really otherwise there is no knowing what the problem might be.

There was a security update for IE just this morning and WMP10 is now available outside of the US of A.

All updates installed beautifully and WMP10 is now playing Karen Carpenter's "It's going to take some time this time ... "

It is a BIG improvement on WMP9 with a MUCH better layout for the interface.

About ten DAYS ago I used AutoStreamer 1·0 to merge the SP2 update together with the files on my original XP CD and burn a new XPSP2 CD.

(You can either use the full 266Mb SP2 download from MS or use the FREE SP2 CD from MS which will do Home and Professional versions of XP and is a better deal.)

It won't take more than about 25 minutes for AutoStreamer to make an .ISO file for you to burn the new XPSP2 CD and then it is really quick doing a CLEAN install, update and re-install the rest.

I kept all my settings on three FLOPPIES made by the File & Settings Transfer Wizard. The files stayed on drives D: E: and F: so that was not a problem.

You get a MUCH cleaner install if you do it that way.

I installed the Recovery Console to the HDD this time and put Title Bar Clock on the system and added Layout.zip to remember the desktop icon layout.

Solve : Not all files are showing?

Answer»

Hope this is the right forum for this. Anyway, here's my problem:

All of my mp3 files are saved in one folder. I have approximately 5000 mp3 files in this folder. Some time ago, I noticed that only about 2100 of these files are listed when I use Windows Explorer to list the files in the folder. I've tried changing the folder options to list all files, including hidden files, but it doesn't make a difference. I know these files are still in this folder, since I have all of these files loaded into WinAmp for shuffle play, so these files still exist and are being accessed by WinAmp.

Am I missing something here? Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated! When looking at the folder properties how many files does it show? If any are present but hidden beyond hidden, it should still show the file count to be say 5000 ... if it shows just 2100, then there really are only 2100 when looking at properties. Sometimes music players will show say 5000 but they are linked among the music folder you created and the music folder in the user profile or elsewhere.Dave, when looking at folder properties, it says there are only 2149 files in the folder. I know the remainder of the files are in that folder, because if I'm using WinAmp, and I check on the properties of one of the songs playing (one of the ones that aren't listed using Explorer), it shows the file path to that very folder. If the file wasn't there, it certainly wouldn't be playing.

It's really strange. I've never encountered anything like it.Additional info: When I drop into a DOS shell, a DIR command also only lists 2149 files.Have you checked the disk for errors lately?

Have you checked the disk for errors lately?

That certainly alleviated SOME of the problems. After running a CHKDSK /f and then defragmenting the hard drive, it's now showing 4,305 files. It's still missing around 700 other files, although they're not missing per se, since I'm still able to access the files through WinAmp.

Thanks so much for your advice! Is there anything further I could do to possibly GET the rest of the files to show up?You want to run chkdsk /r not chkdsk /f Quote from: Allan on November 03, 2013, 08:57:10 AM
You want to run chkdsk /r not chkdsk /f

That did it! All files are showing now!

Thanks so much, Allan! For future reference...the /r switch implies /f....
So although not as quick it's the proper method.

I have been thinking this since quite early in this thread... large number of files vanished suddenly... Uh-oh! Chkdisk with the /F switch fixes file system errors, the /R switch locates bad SECTORS and attempts to recover readable information. Hard drives are made with a number of spare sectors. All hard drives develop the odd one or two bad sectors from time to time. Right from new, the firmware on the drive will silently map out bad sectors and copy the data to spare ones. After all the spare sectors are used up, when any more bad sectors happen, the problem then spills over into the user's world and then you start having to use chkdisk /R. This, and large numbers of new bad sectors, are a clear sign that the disk is now unreliable and reaching end of life.
Couldn't agree more...Thanks for all your advice, everyone!

For the record, I was never WORRIED about losing any files, since I have them all backed up on a 1 terabyte external HD. It never really occurred to me that the hard drive might have been the source of the problems, which is a good indication of the kind of a good luck I've had with hard drives over the 25+ years of working with them. And it's no wonder that parts of it were failing, since I don't believe I've ever defragmented or ran a disk check on this particular drive for the 5 or so years I've been using it. Until I replace it, I am now wiser and will start to run regular MAINTENANCE on it.

Thanks again everyone! Quote from: Salmon Trout on November 03, 2013, 01:04:00 PM

I think one of the reasons I wasn't thinking it was a drive problem was for the fact that although the files weren't being listed, I was still able to access them through WinAmp, so I knew they were still there. Had I not been able to access the files at all, my first thought would probably have been "uh oh, HD problem".

not 100% sure what you mean... .dll files (dynamic link library) aren't REALLY directly executable by cmd.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/124549/what-exactly-are-dll-files-and-how-to-they-work

you can open cmd prompt and TYPE Code: [Select]type *.dll and you'll see what cmd get's out of a .dll. They are encrypted or packaged in a way that makes them not directly TEXT editable.

Solve : Downloaded internet files in XP Pro have absolutely no permissions, can't access?

Answer»

After files from internet are downloaded the files end up with no permissions. All users are missing, even the System, Administrators, and Everyone accounts. The only way these files become usable is to add the System and Administrators accounts. Why is this and how do I fix this problems. Thanks in ADVANCE for any help you can send my way.Ran into the same thing a long time ago and STILL had notes on it. This is the process I USED, got it from somewhere, dont remember, but it worked for me.

1. Log on under an admin account.
2. Click Start
3. Type the three letters "cmd" (Without quotes) and press Enter.
4. Type the following commands (without quotes) and press Enter after each:
    "takeown /f F:\ /a /r /d y"
    "icacls F:\ /t /c /grant administrators:F System:F everyone:F"
(Answer "yes" when prompted "Are you sure?")Thanks a bunch! I had some issues with the commands not being in XP Pro but found a workaround. Using the info you posted I came up with this:

Windows Vista or higher:
1. Log on under an admin account.
2. Click Start
3. In "Run" box enter "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
4. Type the following commands (without quotes) and press Enter after each:
     takeown /f c:\ /a /r /d y
     icacls c:\ /t /c /grant Administrators:F System:F Everyone:RX

========================================================================================

Windows XP:
1. Log on under an admin account.
2. Click Start
3. In "Run" box enter "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
4. Type the following commands and press Enter after each:
If "takeown.exe" is not AVAILABLE copy it from a 2003 32-bit server and use it same as 1st option above (without brackets):
    [ takeown /f c:\ /a /r /d y ]
XP has "cacls.exe" and it can be used as follows (without brackets):
    [ cacls c:\*.* /T /C /G Administrators:F System:F Everyone:R ]
(Answer "yes" when prompted "Are you sure?") <<= Note: Only the "cacls.exe" COMMAND requires this.
    -or-
Copy "icacls.exe" from a 2003 32-bit server and use it same as 1st option above (without brackets):
    [ icacls c:\ /t /c /grant Administrators:F System:F Everyone:RX ]

BTW, you may not want to give "Everyone" full control...

Thanks again!

Solve : How do I get password from Outlook Express 6??

Answer» YES, it is my computer. It is my e-mail account. But I have no record of what was the last password I had use for taht account. I is only in Outlook EXPRESS. I can not find it anywhere else. The e-mail works fine. but I want to know what the password is. Rught now, I can only use OE 6 to receive messages for this account. I don 't have th password to use other e-mail clients.
I thought this would be easy, but links found on Google are of little help. They talk about a PST file. Duh? whee is it? how do I find it?
Any help would be nice. The PST file belongs to Outlook, not OE. I know of no way to retrieve a password in OE.

You can ACCESS that email account via web browser, can't you? I believe nearly all email accounts can be accessed by web browser. So, I would access the account that way, change the password there, and then you can enter the new password in OE and you're back in business with it. Geek you should know our Policy here by now. There are programs which can reveal an already stored password, at the moment when a software application (e.g. browser or email app) automatically inserts it as a row of asterisks into a dialog, but if it isn't stored, the only option is to either remember it correctly or get it reset. The email account is run by the email provider that you have an account with, whether this is your ISP or some other outfit, they will be able to reset it for you.

Thanks guys, I should know better. I will have to call my e-mail provider an do it over the phone. And NET time I will put it in my log book. With my pencil.
Those password SNIFFERS don't work for me.

Solve : My Pavilion DV7-2100sa won't turn on?

Answer»

Hi,

I just purchased a second hand PAVILION DV7-2100sa from a friend and he said it wasn't TURNING on. I thought I'd give it a shot.

So I PLUG in the AC adapter and the power light on the side comes on. Also the "Charging Battery" light on the front flashes then goes off.

When I press the power button, the power light on the front flashes once, briefly, then goes off. That's it.

I've tried a hard reset but that didn't CHANGE anything.

All help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Hard to say. One guess is a bad AC adapter. Another guess: the battery might be bad; many laptops will run without the battery. Have you tried that? Otherwise, I'm afraid you may have a faulty motherboard.

When you try to start it, can you hear any sound at all from it if you put your ear very close to it? Any clicking sound or any sound at all? CHEERS soybean,

I've tried it with another AC adapter and tried it without the battery and it didn't change.

And no there's no sound whatsoever from it. None at all. Just light on...light off. That's it.

But thanks for your help anyway.

Solve : Need help cleaning out Windows file?

Answer»

I have a computer which's C:/ drive only has 100MB free out of it's 74GB. Now, there is literally nothing on the computer besides google chrome and firefox and like malwarebytes. I found that the WINDOWS file is taking all the room, it says
Size: 110GB
Size on disk: 70.6GB

I really don't want to kill this computer by accidentally deleting an essential Windows file, but I know that something is wrong here and need some help so that I may find which of the hundreds of files within WINDOWS is taking up all the space and know if it's safe to remove.

Thanks for any help.Do you have an external storage device for backup? Does the computer have anything really important?
If you have the original install CD and the product key, just do a full install after wiping the disk with a program made for nuking the whole drive.
Here is a video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHoSLGzpe24
Make sure you have a backup important data.Yea, that's what I wanted to do. But, the computer has installed a program that costs about $2000 and only works on this computer. Reinstalling windows would render the program useless, even if I backed it up(I think it may only have allowed one install).

But, anyway, I WENT through and made sure and the files and folders inside WINDOWS definitely don't add up to 70GB, they don't even go higher than like 6GB. Does anyone have an idea without having to wipe the drive?Forget about wiping the drive.
OK, I see your problem. For a $2000 program, another answer is needed.
Best answer is too buy a new hare drive and clone the hard drive,. The use the new, LARGER drive and but keep the original as the backup.
This is the safest and most conservative solution.

Right now, the older style hard drive, PATA, is the best WAY to add life to an old PC. Expect almost a 50% increase in performance by having more free space. But trying to sort out what is taking so much space is a tough nut.

I see 160 GB drives for under $20. Very economical upgrade for an old PC.

1) Your first post says Windows is taking up 110Gb on a 74Gb drive. PLEASE explain.

2) Download TreeSize and see where the space is being taken. You COULD have malware (you do not indicate that you have an anti virus app installed) or it could be elsewhere - let's see

It's taking up 70.6GB on the disk.I'm just wondering where this $2000.00 app is from...Go to Control panel, Add/Remove programs and total up all the programs you have there. This will give us a better idea what's on your harddrive.Probably System Restore & all the Windows update taking up the space.

Solve : Copying Large Files over LAN?

Answer»

I have a problem in TRANSFERRING large files between TWO computers on a LAN. The two computers in question are both GX-280s running XP SP3. The LAN is wired. I am using cut and paste in Windows Explorer to try to do this. I have been successful in moving the smaller files (one as large as 2,831,154 KB) but when I try to copy larger ones I get

"Cannot copy xxxxx: There is not enough free disk space

Delete one or more files to free disc space, and then try again.

To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary file, click
Disk Cleanup"

At that time the receiving drive had
78,891,602,272 byes Used Space
1,421,144,064,000 bytes Free Space

The File I was trying to transfer had 4,229,608 KB

A copy the 4.2 GB file that failed could be made (using cut and paste in Windows Explorer) to the same disk it was on. I have tried this both "pushing" and "pulling" and get the same result

I had thought that somehow the data might be put in memory before being written to the disk on the receiving COMPUTER and increased the size of Virtual Memory to

756/1512 MB (Initial/Maximum) on C Drive and
1500/3000 MB on D Drive.
System information show that there was 1,536 MB Total and 1.09 GB Available Physical memory before running any of this.

That still doesn't make it work

Is this a fundamental problem of Win XP? I don't see how the LAN itself (the switches and the cables) could be a problem. Surely the data would be sent in smaller packets anyhow since the smaller files that transferred successfully took a number of minutes to complete and it was possible for other computers on the LAN to talk to the DSL modem and the internet while the transfer was taking place.

Sounds like the drive you're transferring to is formatted as FAT32, rather than NTFS. FAT32 doesn't support files of that size, whereas NTFS does. Thanks much, that works. It is a long process moving all those files but they are moving. It was a used drive I bought and it was already formatted so I didn't think to look. FAT32 goes back to W98 or so, I think, and I wouldn't have expected it on a SATA-2 disc, much less one that large. Again thanks.

By nature the Win file copy/move operations can be slow...because they overthink things in Redmond Wa....
I use and recommend TeraCopy for this.
Freeware...give it a try. Quote

FAT32 goes back to W98 or so, I think, and I wouldn't have expected it on a SATA-2 disc, much less one that large.

If the drive came out of an external drive, removed from the enclosure to be used internally, its common for it to be FAT32 from factory without having to come from an older OS computer.

The only problem i have run into with yanking drives from external enclosures for installation internally is that most of the drives I have come across are lacking in Cache compared to other drives of SIMILAR capacity. They will work ok installed internally, but I think because the drive manufacturer knew they were going to be used externally for slow USB communications, they used cheaper drives with lesser Cache.

I found this out when using CrystalDiskInfo on some drives I had and 3 of them use to be in external enclosures, but of which were pulled from the enclosures because the USB/SATA board died on the enclosure or they were from for example a 1TB Maxtor External in which it had 2 x 500GB drives installed and spanned as a single drive and 1 of the 2 drives died and it was thrown away. I tested the drives and found 1 good 500GB and the other that wouldnt even spin up I shipped back to Seagate who honors Maxtor warranty and got a 500GB Seagate Rebuild in return for just the cost of shipping.

I'd run CrystalDiskInfo on the drive to make sure its a healthy drive. You also will know how many hours its been used and how many times power has been cycled on it etc as well as LOTS of other info about the drive health. http://crystalmark.info/software/index-e.html

Among a small stack of drives I had from systems I yanked them from, I found 2 that had bad sector counts that pointed to drives that may be limited in continued use, as well as another drive with 33,000 hours on it of use, but yet it was still at 0 bad sector count which I bought for $9.99 through newegg for a 120GB IDE HDD for my daughters computer upgrade away from her 40GB which was out of space.Actually most externals have shipped eithr non-formatted or straight up NTFS for awhile now...
At least the ones i've purchased...

OK here is my problem I am running WIN ME and LOW and behold on day I TURN on the cpu and it stops on my background. The pic appears but that’s all. NO icons NO start bar NO nothing except a LOVELY photo I took of the German countryside some time ago. The mouse appears on the screen however I am unable to right click and get the menu. If you hit ctl/alt/del it brings up the close program window and clearly shows that there are not any programs running. However the usual pressing of the keys will shut the CPU down. This is the only WAY to shut it down as I don’t have a start menu or anything else. Please send your knowledgeI've seen this on WinME. I suspect you may have had a power glitch, while the computer was on, and you did not notice it. Use "System Restore" to go back to a date and time when it was working.....draging foot in the dirt....

For WinXP it's:
Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Restore

Should be similar in WinME. If not, go to Start-->Help, and type in "System Restore".
or load a boot floppy a:\ then type cd windows enter c:\ then this command scanreg/restore and chose the last good cab file by answering yes after the splash screen

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313348 Partitioning & Formatting XP

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=30900 Using Disk Manager

Do you have the full XP CD or is it an upgrade? Have you slipstreamed Service Pack Two (SP2) together with your XP CD and made a new XP CD using AutoStreamer 1·0 so as to get a clean install? Do you have a full '98 CD?

Best to just boot to the new XPSP2 CD (easier to use oldbios.exe on a floppy instead of changing over your BIOS, but you can do either)

When you get to the install use the XP CD to delete all of your partitions and start over. Make an 8·0Gb drive C: (Type 8192) for the XP Operating System and a drive D: using the rest of the drive. (You can have one Primary and up to three Logical drives on one physical drive.)

Formatting is up to you, but I advise formatting directly to NTFS and NOT pre-formatting the drive with FAT32.

That way you get 4096 byte allocation clusters which are optimised for using XP on NTFS and an unfragmented Master File Table (MFT) and your system WILL run BETTER.)

When all is formatted just proceed with the INSTALLATION.
When complete run chkdsk and defrag, then add your Anti-Virus and Firewall (I use AVG & Zone Alarm), re-connect your modem, go-online, immediately update your AV and run an AV scan.

Now go to Windows Update site and add all relevant updates for your system.

Add ALL of your other programs, then add SpyBot SD, AdAware SE & SpywareBlaster, update them all and scan thoroughly.

You should install the Recovery Console to the HDD as WELL to save you time in the future.

With the XP CD in the CD-ROM and whilst connected to the internet type:

(CD-ROM Drive Letter):\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons , and press Enter.

Windows will contact MS and download the latest files for the Recovery Console and install them to your HDD. Next time you boot you'll see a 30 second count-down before XP starts.

Reduce this to 4 seconds in System, Advanced, Start-Up and Recovery, Settings. Leave the other setting at 30 seconds.

Make all of your personal settings and when all is to your liking image the drive to CDRs so that you can re-install easily.

Good luck!Okay, I have no idea what you guys are talking about, I don't know what A Boot Disk is or Fat32 or anything like that.

Here is what I can tell you:

I bought this computer and it came with Windows 98, and all of the CDs to install everything like the screen and printer and everything.

It also came with a Windows 98 Disc.

Just recently I decided Windows 98 is not good enough so I bought The Windows XP Professional Edition.

So now I have this CD and So I stuck it into my CD Drive, It scanned it and asked what i wanted to do, I clicked 'Install Windows XP' and so it began installing, It did ask questions and I had no idea what they were talking about so I just guessed the questions.

So I now have Windows XP and Windows 98.

It was suppose to go over my Windows 98 but it didn't, then I found out from a friend that I had to Reformat my computer so I can install everything and have a fresh start.

What I want to do is Delete everything, Everything from C Drive, and D Drive, Because I have alot of random files and errors.

Is there any simple ways to delete everything and reinstall windows xp? like a program I can download that will just delete everything and let me install windows? or do I have to do all that stuff like get a boot disk and stuff?

Sorry for been so stupid but I am no good when it comes to computers and thats why I came here to ask computer people who can help computer problems...

So if anyone can help me do this I will be so happy:

1) Delete Everything
2) Install Windows XP

Thats all i want to do, Is there any simple way of doing this? If so, Can you Please explain to me in a simple way so I can understand cause its hard rather than give you goobledgook have a [email protected]k here>http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdoldhdd/index.htmif you want to do a total clean install just do it an easy way... get a win98 Startup disk boot without cdrom support, type 'fdisk' and delete your primary partition. then reboot, same thing in fdisk and create a primary partition, reboot, boot with floppy and 'format c: /s'... popin your xp cd and install awayJesse Welsh.....What you should do is .....first go to bootdisk.com and D/l a win 98boot disk and put it on a floppy disc.( make sure the boot disk has Format , Fdisk ,MSCDEX and several other Dos files on it .)

Read this ... http://www.techrescue.net/guides/prepdrv6.asp

Once you have done this then you must format C drive.....to do this at the A: type Format C: and enter

my wife's from canada so i always tease her the way she talks like aboot or romoute <- just how she pronounces it too lolInstead of waiting for the fella to respond to the first message (He may never even come back) you guys write an entire dialoque? Jesse, You should do the COMPATABILITY test first otherwise you won't know if your hardware can handle XP.

We don't know what your hardware is like, and you didn't answer any of the questions, so we can only assume what it is that you want to do with your computer. You may have programs that need a lot of computing power and there is no crystal ball.

Some think that there is an easy way to do these things, but when you see just how many people want to take XP off and put '98 back on you will realise that it is NOT just that simple.

It is similar to tuning a car. If you want it to perform well it needs to be done right. All of the other equipment has to be up to the job. You have a lot of reading there and there is no point in having information technology if you don't inform yourself.

One thing it is not and that is that it is not a Television set. You don't just turn it on and hope it works.

XP is totally different to anything that went before with the exception of 2000 & NT

The NT, 2000, XP operating systems are quite different to the 95, 98, ME operating systems.

Windows 64-bit systems are totally different again.

95, 98, ME will USEFULLY use up to 512Mb of RAM (0·5Gb)

NT, 2000, XP will usefully use up to 4096Mb or RAM (4·0Gb)

Whereas 64-bit systems can use up to 16384Mb of RAM (16·0Gb)

OK so simple instructions for suck it and see.

Change over BIOS so that the computer boots to the CD-ROM drive. As it is starting put the XP CD into the CD-ROM drive and allow it to load.

Choose to delete all partitions which you see.

Make a new C: drive partition using 8192(Mb) for the size. XP Professional needs plenty of room. Make a second drive D: partition using the remainder of the drive space.)

When the drive-space is fully used, format the two drives, choosing to format to NTFS, as you want to install XP Professional as there are features in XP Professional which will not work on FAT32 File Allocation Tables. (FAT).

These features are not available with XP Home edition.

You can format the D: drive from the C: drive later if you want. But you cannot format the C: drive when Windows is running. You can also delete the D: drive from within Windows and make two or three (maximum) drive partitions, D: , E: , F: if you need to at some later stage.

It helps to know just how big this drive is, btw.

When all of the formatting has been done choose to install XP Professional to the C: drive partition.

If all goes well you should be at the desktop in about 40 minutes.

Good luck. There is quite a long learning curve with XP Professional so just take your time.

The main benefits apart from encryption and file compression are the NTFS addressing system and allocation cluster size optimisation.

This last is a bit of a trade-off between performance and efficient use of the available disk-space, and that is why the hardware needs to be up to the job when it comes to getting full performance.

As many people don't understand the underlying principles fully they often find the experience to be disappointing.

A little more knowledge would surely enlighten them.

NOTE: Here is an interesting Forum glitch: '95/'98/ME operating systems.

Compare that to the line above.

Solve : Made new account and lost account with everything?

Answer»

made new account, hoping not to use administration account, i'm thinking it's easier for hackers to get in. anyhooo, i am in panic mode, i have a new account and the name is Dar and it is a brand new account and my original one is GONE help please xp pro 3Unless you went through the motion of deleting the prior account it should be there. Do you see the account under C:\Documents and Settings\

You should see:

C:\Documents and Settings\Dar

and others there listed under C:\Documents and Settings\

... the account if not seen there may be owner or administrator of your account that you think is gone, but is still there.

Logon to the other accounts and see what the desktop looks like. If you all of a sudden notice that your desktop is that of your original account then you found it.

By the way it is a good habit to create a user account in addition to the admin accoun and run as user privileges and elevate privileges to administrator when needed and then go back to user privileges, especially if you are surfing the grey area of the web in which you dont want anything installed through a bad script on a webpage etc.

Running as admin all the time has its risks. Those who create 2 or 3 accounts User & Admin or User, Power User, and Admin are better off.

thank you, i found the account in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator but I do not know how to access it. when i click start, log off, switch user I do not have the Admin account option. ty for finding it for me, great RELIEF. as for the rest of your message i will need to go step by step with it to understand it tyvmThe admin account you had prior... was this automatic logon or did it require a password to logon to your computer?

Is your current Dar account LIMITED to only user privileges or is it still an administrator privileged account that hasnt been set to user level yet?

* If Dar is admin privileged, you can go into where you created the Dar account and select to change the password to the administrator account, however if Dar is a user privileged account and you do not have the ability to make these changes you may need to use a Windows XP password crack disc to force change the administrator account password to blank or a password of choice to regain control as admin of the system.

Here is the Microsoft method, however I use a bootable CD that uses Linux to crack Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306214

Here is the Linux based tool that I have used successfully: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/gr/offlinentpwed.htm

The Bottom Line
The Offline NT Password & Registry Editor password cracker is one of the fastest free Windows password recovery tools I've used. I even prefer this tool over many premium password recovery programs.

In a Hurry?: Skip my review below and head right to the complete step-by-step guide to Offline NT Password & Registry Editor.

If you can burn a CD and choose a few options in a menu then you can hack into your computer with this free software.

Just download the free ISO file, burn it to a CD, and delete your password in just a few minutes. After that, you'll be able to access Windows without a password at all!

Visit Their Website
Pros
•Very fast password cracking tool
•No access to Windows or knowledge of old passwords is needed
•Program is completely free and open source, which means it will likely stay free
•Works with Windows 8 (local passwords only), Windows 7, Windows Vista, & Windows XP
•Program's ISO image is much smaller than those of other password recovery tools
Cons
•Offline NT Password tool is completely text based which is a little inconvenient
•ISO image must be burned to a CD before passwords can be reset
Description
•Offline NT Password & Registry Editor can delete any password from nearly any installation of Windows almost instantly.
•No installation in Windows is required making this program an easy alternative to many other password recovery tools.
•Offline NT Password & Registry Editor simply deletes passwords instead of displaying them making it fast and easy to use.
•Offline NT Password & Registry Editor is completely free to download and use.
•Resets Windows 8 passwords (local accounts only, not Microsoft accounts).
•Resets Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP passwords.
•Offline NT Password & Registry Editor will also remove passwords from 64-bit versions of Windows.
Guide Review - Offline NT Password & Registry Editor
Offline NT Password & Registry Editor (2011-05-11 Build) is an amazing password recovery tool but instead of actually recovering your Windows password like Ophcrack and similar tools do, it deletes it. Without a password, you're allowed unrestricted access to your Windows operating system.

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor requires a little preparation but is very much worth the effort if you've been locked out of your Windows PC!

How To Use Offline NT Password & Registry Editor
Below is a quick how-to for Offline NT Password & Registry Editor. However, I highly recommend my step by step guide with screenshots if you're not familiar with Windows password recovery software and need a more detailed walkthrough.

To begin, visit the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor website by clicking the Visit Their Web Site link above the User Reviews at the bottom of this page.

Once there, scroll down to the "Download" section near the bottom of the page. Download the cd110511.zip file - the one described as the "Bootable CD image." The file is only around 4MB so it'll be a quick download for most of you.

Once downloaded, extract the ISO file (cd110511.iso) from the ZIP file and burn the ISO image to a CD. Burning an ISO file is different than burning a normal file so if you need help please see How To Burn an ISO File to a CD.

After burning, boot from the CD by rebooting with the disc still in the drive. Offline NT Password & Registry Editor will start automatically.

After that, just follow the instructions given on screen by Offline NT Password & Registry Editor.

When Offline NT Password & Registry Editor finally deletes your password, remove the CD from the drive. Reset your computer and log in as you normally do... but do not enter anything in the password field. You're in!

Once Windows loads, create a new Windows password that you can remember and then create a password reset disk so you never have to use this program again!
automatic logon. i don't know what my current Dar account has or doesn't have. i'm still in shock lol tyi don't think i have a password, i do not type in a password, or did i have to have one?? i never make a password unless i'm forced, i'm not worried about anyone here getting my password, did i have to make a password for my Dar account?? why did my REAL account disappear?Did the OP try safe mode?
In safe mod you can choose the administrator account and nus a blank password.
The sage mode REPTILIAN administrator does whatever hen wants.Sounds like you were previously using the built in Administrator account. This isn't the usual route, and this account is hidden as soon as you create a normal account (whether that's another account with admin rights or not).
To log back into your Administrator account, at the login prompt press Ctrl+alt+del, and type in Administrator for the username, then the password you set for that account, or no password if you didn't set one. It's only hidden from the list of users you can click to log on as, so doing that will let you log in to that account as normal.hello Calum: sounds exactly right to me. i've tried ctrl alt del and only F8 worked, got me into Safe Mode, clicked on Administrator and was taken to cmd.exe and then C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator with flashing cursor. after i closed down the cmd.exe the screen was black with Safe Mode in all four corners of the screen, no options, nothing i pressed worked used reset button to restart computer, hope that was okay tyvmSounds like you went into safe mode with command prompt, rather than just safe mode. The option for safe mode will give you a prompt to ask if you're sure you want to use safe mode rather than system restore, then it'll drop you onto the standard desktop, just at low resolution and all the fancy options turned off. You would then be able to copy anything you want out of the Administrator user's profile.
Ctrl alt del at the login prompt will get you the standard login box to type your username and password, rather than the "friendly" login screen where you click a username to log in.

Alternatively, you can go to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator as Dave suggested and copy your files out that way, but you may have to fiddle with permissions etc so IMO it is easier to just log in as Administrator and do it that way.i cannot get the ctrl alt del to work the right way, do i HOLD and when, do i tap sorryAt the login screen, so when you see the list of users to log in, hold ctrl and alt, and press delete.
If your current user account logs in automatically without you seeing a logon screen, press ctrl alt delete after logging in, and choose to switch user, then choose a different user, type in Administrator for the username and the password (or leave it blank if there's no password). We did it needed to unhighlight any user name, then press ctrl/alt/delete or ctrl/alt then delete, not sure which on worked but is asked me to type in user name = Administrator and i got my origianal account back. Now could we go over your information about having, what is best, all about accounts thank you so much email time Good, glad to hear that worked for you.
Now, you can copy your information over to the other account if you like.
I would recommend not using the built in Administrator account, as it's really meant to be a last resort if there's an issue with the other accounts on the machine. In all honesty though, if you're concerned about security it's time to upgrade from XP as it'll be out of Microsoft's support cycle in 6 months.ty again, it is working but i have to get to the option screen and choose Admin every time, so i think i need to copy my information over to the other account (which other account) assuming Dar but i do not know how . I will not use the built in Admin account if you can help with that? ty

Solve : Can't log on to XP?

Answer»

Hello All,

My Dell 3100c desktop is GIVING me a message "This Copy of Windows Must be activated before you can log on"
1.I have booted to safe mode with cmd and run rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk to try and activate for 30 days.
Nothing worked.
I think now my only option left is to reinstall windows xp but my problem is now i have no disc.

So what do i do now!

Please any help WOULD be life saving.
Thanks.Contact MS...they have an 800# for activation issues...Hello Patio,

Thanks for the reply.

A friend has GIVEN me the disc from his xp version it's pro version also.
Would that be ok to use.
My desktop version is oem.

If i install can i use my own key.
Yes.
The disc does not matter as long as the versions match exactly and you have a legit activation key...
It may still require a phone call to activate though.Hello Patio,

Thanks for the advice.Anytime...
Welcome Aboard...and bring us good news...
We love success STORIES here.giant... 3 things you could run in to:

1 - Since your friend's disk is not an OEM disk, you will likely have to go fishing for various drivers after installing.
2 - If the version (i.e. XP Pro) is not the same as what your desktop shipped with (i.e. XP Home), then your key will not work.
3 - You may still need to "Activate" windows after installation. I don't recall what the circumstances where, but I've had to "activate" a few times after installing - even though I provided a proper key. So that may not solve your problem entirely.

Nonetheless... when you "activate" windows all you do is call MS and give them a code and they give you one back to validate. As I recall it gives you the option to activate even without being logged in... :/ ALTHOUGH TBH it's been a while since I've had an expired windows XP install... so yeah. Thanks to you both for the replies.

I will get back to you with the results.

Solve : How to Get Files After System Recovery??

Answer»

A few days ago, my ten-year-old computer (running XP) would not boot. I could not even boot in safe mode. I also couldn't back up my files. I was advised to run a system recovery, which would refresh my OS, delete all my programs (returning it to close to factory condition) but keep all my files. I did the recovery successfully, but now I can't find my files. They must still be in the hard drive, as the drive shows that it is almost full (about where I left off). The files must also be in "hiding", as I can right-click on the folders, look at the properties, and the total GB space does not equal the space of the drive. I also can't do a search to find the file names.

Does anyone KNOW how I can recover my files? I'm afraid to reboot my machine because I don't want my files to be DELETED. That's what I really want to preserve. I tried looking for a restore point, but there doesn't seem to be any. Maybe they were deleted.

Can anyone please advise me about how I might recover my files?

I would be very thankful for any information you could give me.

Thanks,
BPLook under disk management (winkey + R "diskmgmt.msc") and see if there is another segment that isn't showing properly. I doubt it's that... so you'd also look under C:\Documents and Settings for ant other user profiles. Other than that, you can just browse around the whole file system and see if you can find anything... you could also do a search of the C:\ drive for a specific file name. If you know just 1 file that has a totally unique name (and you remember it EXACTLY) then you may be able to find it...

however I honestly don't know what KIND of "system recovery" you did... so the files very WELL could be gone. Sorry.

kyle engineerI fear you were advised improperly...
A system restore retains all data and takes the OS back to a previous date...

A factory restore...which is what it sounds like you did wipes the whole HDD and returns the PC back to Day 1 status.

Solve : .exe Bad image warnings?

Answer»

Hi everyone. My problem is:

Every time I open a program I see the same bad image exe warning.

For example, it says:

EXCEL.EXE – BAD IMAGE
The application of DLL C:\PROGRA~1\SEARCH~1\Datamngr.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

Is there anyway to get rid of this? I have an HP Media Center Desktop computer running Windows XP 2002, Service Pack 3.

Solve : Windows XP won't recognizing mouse??

Answer»

I have an old Dell PC that has two versions of Windows XP Pro installed. One is the 64 bit VERSION and the other is the 32 bit version. I'm using a USB CORDED mouse and the mouse works just fine when I'm running XP Pro 64 bit, but the PC doesn't recognize it at all when I'm running the 32 bit version. It doesn't even recognize it as being plugged in. I know it has to be something simple, but I just can't figure it out. Any help would really be appreciated.Does the XP 32-bit see other devices on USB such as thumb drives etc? Generally corded mice are PLUG n play using a generic driver for optical mouse etc. In device manager are there any complaints or warnings red or yellow alerts? You might need a driver to enable the USB ports functionality etc is what I am thinking maybe, if so it should show an issue in device manager.Other USB devices work just fine. I checked in the device manager and there aren't any red or yellow alerts. The PC isn't even detecting that the mouse is plugged in. I just don't understand how it can work just fine under the 64 bit version and not the 32 bit version. The 32 bit version was a fresh install that I just did BTW.How are your 2 OSs installed? Are they on separate physical drives?

I don't totally understand why, but when I've installed 2 different installs on the same physical drive (though on different partitions) it has always been buggy at best, and totally busted at worst. This was especially true when the OSs were the same version (win 7 ult 32 & win 7 ult 64).

I'd say it could be something similar. Either that or you could check the http://www.dell.com/support/my-support/us/en/19/ site for driver updates. It could be that you don't have all the correct DRIVERS for your 32-bit and/or 64-bit version(s)...

Anyway... that's my 2.What does Device Manger show when booted to the 32 bit version ? ?

Took forever to load.
All system operations slowed tremendously after installation.
Uninstalled and did a "restore," system worked fine. Installed again. Took forever, using 80-100% of CPU. System slowed again. All system operations now use tremendous amount of CPU.

Version of XP: HOME
Type of Application: Game
System Specs: AMD Duron 800 MG/hz, 256 RAM, 32 mg. Nvidia Ge2 M200, 40 Gig
is it a recent game? some may meet your requirments, but that just might be the minimum... also see if you have alot of proccess running or applications that might slow it down
What game is it?

Hi, just to confirm. Is it you ONLY encounter this problem when opening folders (but not others like HTM, media etc. files)?

Try to add "open" to the file folder. See if this can solve your problems.I did add "Open" to the file folder menu. Now it opens a new window with each double click, which is better, but not normal.

It just happens with windows explorer, not IE or anything else.I suggest af urther look into the hardware settings in Control Panel : are you using the same mouse as always, or have you added a new one? Is there only one mouse in your profile? If you have a mouse that did not come with the sytem, such as a track ball, have you loaded the drivers? Does your driver offer customization of the various buttons? Am curious to see how this works out.....What kind of 'search' Window does it open? The search window looks like I clicked "Start>Search".

But that stopped now, now it just opens a new window..

I havent been on it in a couple days, so I still have to try that Folder Options thing.

I really appreciate the help you're all giving me, it means alot. What have you done before this problem occured? Is the computer operated by other users?
You need to edit the registry because the one in "folder options" doesn't let you to look the function in details (The "Edit" button is greyed out).

First try to delete the "open" option. Then restart. Try to add "open" again, see if it works.

If not, you need to edit registry.
Warning: Incorrectly modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Do it at your own risk.

If you don't wish to edit registry yourself, I can send you a *.reg which can help you to modify it. Leave your email ADDRESS if you wish to get.

Open in the same window
Step 1:
- Open registry by "Start | Run | Type "regedt32"
- In "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shell", add:
…\SameWindow
- Double click "Default", type the name(description) of the new function (eg "Open in the same window")

Step 2:
- In "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shell\NewWindow, add:
…\Command
- Double click "default", type "explorer.exe"

Step 3
- Go to "Window Explorer| Tools | Folder Options | File Types | File Folder"
Select "Open in the same window" as default.

Then you should be able to double-click and open in the same folder.
Hope it helps.

Solve : Software does not work after sp2?

Answer»

Hi, I allowed automatic updates to load sp2 and all seemed just fine and jim dandy.
Then I used Partition Majic to resize a partition and it failed. The next time I opened Partition Majic it said:

"Disk 1 appears to have partitions created using a different drive geometry. This serious problem can lead to data LOSS"

then recommends reformating your entire hd and RESTORING it.

Also, after having used Image for Dos 100% successfully for 2 months the next time I use it (put the floppy in the reader) it reads a bit and then just stops and does nothing.

Any tips or hints. Thanks much!It is the motherboard drivers, graphics adapter drivers, modem drivers, chipset drivers, and the like that make the SITUATION prone to fail when restoring an image on one SYSTEM that was created on another.

You need to keep things SIMPLE and clean. The software cannot do miracles and did you format and partition the hard drive...please dont use partiton magic..winxp can do it ...by using disk management....as stated in previous replys..

Solve : You Tube Videos Audio Only?

Answer»

I've had this recurring problem for AWHILE now but never thought to ask for help, but since I just updated my 1Click You Tube Downloader as well as the YTD Video Downloader and am still having the problem I thought I would throw it out there, as the title says when I play a You Tube video after running it through one of the above mentioned downloaders there are no visuals at all just AUDIO, this only happens when using Real Player but also won't work with Windows Media Player 11, is there a way of fixing this ? Must be a codec issue with the media players you use.

Try using VLC media player and see if that will fix it. Just for your information, YTD comes with an infection. At least, it did with my computers but it's easily cleaned by running MBAM below.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from here.
Double CLICK mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
I don't need to see the log.Just make sure that the infections it finds are cleaned.
After you download a video are you certain that you're converting the video to a WMV file?
Thank you carloborja and SuperDave, I've tried the VLC but it just crashed, This is my Malwarebytes log it found 51 objects, not all of them were ticked so I ticked all the boxes and removed everything. I hope it helps, my computer has been acting quite slow lately.

I'll give you two more scanners to clean the junk out of your computer and see if it speeds up. You don't have to post the logs. Just let me know if it improves the performance of the computer.

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

•Warning! Once the scan is complete JRT will shut down your browser with NO warning.

•Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.

•Temporarily disable your Antivirus and any Antispyware real time protection before performing a scan. Click this link to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.

•Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click JRT and select Run as Administrator

•The tool will open and start scanning your system.

•Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

•On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.

•Copy and Paste the JRT.txt log into your next message.

Computer is running much better now thanks SuperDave, I was wondering since I've performed the scan do I now uninstall Malwarebytes ? or leave it, I was thinking it may be a long time before I need it again and it would be outdated by then.Leave it...
It checks for updates when you run it...

You should run it at least every other week...depending on your online usage.Good advice, Patio and if the user can afford it, the paid for version will become an active scanner and block all harmful malware.SuperDave...Thanx for all you do for us...
Doesn't get stated enough...

Solve : How do I exit out of MSDoss scandisk??

Answer»

I ran a scan disk from MS Doss (this I got to from the start menu) It ran for about 7 hrs, as I have a 60 G hard drive. Now I have no clue what to type at the C prompt. It has a C:\Windows with cursor. How do I exit this? I feel like a complete idiot, but I need help.
Thank you.
Deb Ricetype.....exit after c:\windows and if you right click on the TOP the MSDOS window PROPERTIES see if the close on exit box is ticked....then yopu can exit msdos using your mouse ....hth...Which Operating System are you using Deb?

ScanDisk will TAKE about 1 hour per 10 gigabytes of drive space to perform a full surface scan.

Norton Utilities DiskDoctor is a little faster and better, in my estimation.

Were you at a C:\WINDOWS> , prompt?

If so, you opened a DOS window to run scandisk from & this is Windows ME and you should really run ScanDisk from the System Tools shortcut.

Anyway it seems to have completed OK which means your system is propably in good order.

FYI, You can also type scandisk in the Run window, or run ScanDisk in safe mode or from a Windows ME bootdiskette.

A:\>scandisk /all /surface , and press Enter.I always run scandisk from DOS using Win98SE. When the scan is finished I just hit ctrl-alt-delete and the computer restarts normally to windows.

Solve : Windows Update will not run due to services.msc?

Answer»

I ran into a new problem: Microsoft Windows Update can no longer scan for updates because it claims that a vital service has been disabeled.

Quote

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

I would START the service, however, I see no such service and I donot RECALL disabeling any services, except for WIRELESS Zero Configuration, since I last updated Windows.

I will reset and see if that solves the problem..check that the cryptographic service box is ticked...info>http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htmI did locate the option (They translated it..) however, it was set to Manual and now Automatic. Didn't MAKE a difference.

Cryptographic Services is set to automatic.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q316524&There is no administrator error. I did not loose any priviliges.

Is there ANOTHER reason for posting the article that I may have overlooked?

Apparently, enabling Windows Automatic Update caused another service to be re-enabled and it is now working properly. Thank you for your time, Merlin.BITS is part of XP-SP2.

Go to:
Computer Management-->Services and Applications-->Services

BITS should be listed as "manual" or "automatic", not disabled.
It was. Enabling and disabling Automatic Updates by right clicking on My Computer - Automatic Updates tab somehow solved it.

Solve : Problems After Upgrading?

Answer»

Here's my situation, my computer was a P4 1.7 Ghz, 512mb DDR Ram with a small 14 Gb Hdd, so the other day my dad bought new hardware and i got my friend to install a 160GB HDD and another stick of 512 MB Ram.

I really know nothing about all this, thats why i got my friend is a really good with computers to help me and my old 14GB HDD was set as the slave drive to the other.

The old one has not yet been formatted, I was gonna scan it first...just to see if infected and then format it, but anyway, got XP on alright and the new hdd is working except im getting what it seems to be internet problems.

THe problems include, browser pages just loading up into errors after like 30 minutes of being connected, my system seems to be lagged and my CPU ussage is always at 100% and the only thing i see plaguing it like that is what is: IEXPLORER.EXE SYSTEM, now i know just ending that process would help right? well even when not connected it still plagues my system =\

something also i noticed with my connection to the internet....the sent and recieved bytes are going through the roof...like they rise alot faster then it usually did and it seems when it reaches a point, that is when internet pages just stop loading all together, like within 20 minutes of being connected...my connection will say that bytes sent is around 50 MILLION and bytes recieved around 20 million, and it was never like that before so im concerned with that...maybe thats my problem? cause it wasn't like that before

also since upgrading my computer with the new HDD and RAM, all my downloads have gone slower...like they sucked before...but now its just pitiful....speeds at around 8kb/sec and im on a DSL line

so those are my internet and what not problems...i dont know what to do...im confused and in need of serious help...any advice id REALLY appreciate it

thank you for your timeIf it were me I would put a 20Gb drive with an 8Mb disk-cache as Master and slave the 160Gb drive to it.

When you formatted the drive did you also partition it and have you formatted to FAT32 or to NTFS?

Did you format directly using the XP CD or did you format to FAT32 and convert it?

I would check to see the cluster size with chkdsk and see if it says 4096 byte clusters.

How is the Spyware/Adware situation? Are you using SpyBot SD, AdAware SE & SpywareBlaster?

How is your power supply coping with the additional RAM and the big drive? Not all DRIVES are compatible with each other, btw. TRY disconnecting your old drive.

(I use an 8·0Gb (8192Mb) drive C: for XP) the rest is partitioned for storage.your pc maybe infected by svhost exe....download a trojan remover?
