Solve : xp service pack 2?

Answer»

I am running windiows xp home edition. when I install xp service pack my canon mulipass printer STOPS communicating. When I uninstall the service pack it works fine so I know this is the problem. I am running nortons ANTI virus and internet security, is that the problem. Which is better the nortons or the service pack?Personal opinion >>> Norton, hands down.I would uninstall your printer, then install SP2, and then re-install the printer and see what happens.

I did a fresh install of XP but added SP2 to the original XP CD files using AutoStreamer 1·0 which makes an .ISO file from which you can burn a complete XPSP2 CD and install XPSP2 all in one go.

You get a much better install doing it this way, with no residual hotfixes and servicepack unininstallers cluttering up the drive.

The four drives were re-formatted to NTFS with a FULL format, not a quick format, to ensure that there was no residual data on the drive.

It does mean REINSTALLING EVERYTHING, but the end result is worthwhile, especially if, when you know that it is all working and free of virii & Trojans, you make a drive IMAGE on CDRs of your C: drive to restore with.

Then if you ever have a major problem in the future all you have to do is to format c: and restore with the CDRs.info on how sp2>http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htmdoes anyone know how to help me? my mate downloaded service pk 2, rebooted compo, & now it keeps showing this error! PLEASE HELP!

Solve : bootable recovery console on cd?

Answer»

Hi all,

I recently had a crash and was told that if I had the recovery console (XP) installed(D:\I386\winnt32 /cmdcons) that I could have saved my system. When issuin that command at the "run" prompt it install cmdcons to the hd (C:\). I've tried copying that folder and the boot files (ntldr, ntdetect, boot.ini) to a cd but it won't boot at all, it skips that and GOES into the HD.

I have tried using EZCD creator to make bootable disc, THOUGH it won't emulate the floppy with boot files on it for some reason, it keeps saying INSERT bootable floppy disk.

I am wondering how I can make a bootable CD with recovery console on it, that way I can use it in the future in case I'm not able to boot again.

any ideas?

Thanks,Or, how can I make the cd bootable

- just LIKE a bootable floppy (format a: /s)

and copy the contents of the 6 floppy diskettes to start xp install

that you get from Microsoft (that has recovery console on it)Even with the six floppy disks you still need the XP CD.

Just use any XP CD and type the command for the cmdcons and make sure that you are on-line at the time.

The system will send for the latest files from Microsoft, about 7Mb, and install them for you.

You'll see the recovery console screen, with a 30 second timer, on your next re-boot.

You can alter the timer down to 4 seconds in Recovery & Start-Up, Settings, in System. The XP CD is bootable and will load the Recovery Console automatically for you if you prefer not to install it to the HDD.NOTE for everyone!

If you don't want to alter your BIOS every time you want to use the XP CD you should download oldbios.exe and make a boot floppy using oldbios.exe on its own.

With the floppy in the A: drive and the XP CD in the CD-ROM drive you will have about two seconds when the screen shows "Press any key to boot from CD ... " to boot to the XP CD.

D/L oldbios.exe from http://www.ebcd.pcministry.com

EBCD 060 is worth having too.Why would Windows XP alter your BIOS?If your floppy drive is set as the first boot device you often have to change it to the CD-ROM to allow you to boot on the XP CD.My bad - I misread your post. I thought Windows XP altered your BIOS.

Sorry I didn't tell you all, I do not have the xp cd.

I simply want recovery console on a cd rather than the six recovery diskettes.

This way you can:

Format the c: partition
Use diskpart to make partitions
Fixmbr
Fixboot

Thanks!is this a cloned hard drive...that cd recovery disk you have made...will not get you out of trouble if your system crashes..its best to image the drive...is this a cloned hard drive>http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/...that cd recovery disk you have made...will not get you out of trouble if your system crashes..its best to image/clone the drive...

Solve : How to verify SP2 is turned on?

Answer»

Hi and thanks for the support.
What can I look at in xp home to see that SP2 has been activated. I did the updates and did a restart.
Your start menu should have changed when loading Windows XP.

Right click on My Computer - Properties, there it should state what Service Pack is installed.ricky1me....Are you ASKING ...how do I know its installed ...or how do I activate it....? No ACTIVATION is required.....and if you didnt notice the change in the logo at start up ( it has changed slightly....differant color)
then do as Raptor suggests or look in control panel and you will see several new ICONS....IE "SECURITY CENTER" and "Windows Firewall" ......apart from that, things are pretty much the same as they were before.

dl65 Yes, I first went into updates and did an update and install. I activated automatic updates and it did it's thing and installed all.

That's when I posted this to make sure AND it started doing another update (this time much more activity) and it installed sp2. It also SHOWS a shield in the notification area.

Thanks for the help!its should be listed in the events log....control panel adimin tools...and also in the add/remove programs...

I am guessing that this is a problem that only occurs on 9200 and 9600 cards, because I never hear people about the same problem with other ATI/Radeon cards.

Have you properly installed the drivers?

What if you disable the VPU Recover?

have a check at the power settings....it should be set to If I turn off my VPU recovery the only diffrence that it makes is that I have to restart more often.

I have all power settings on never.

errrr, I just found this out, might not be the problem. I go to adapter in my catylist setup up thingy, and when I look at it it says that the driver is not working problem blah blah blah. But it also says that its running on my 9200 but everything else says its running the 9600, so maybe if I fix this itll fix the main problem. So does anybody know a way to fix this problem?Uninstall the drivers. Use a program such as Driver Cleaner and reinstall the latest updated drivers.I had that problem too. The problem was that the box was not big enough and the power supply was right next to the cpu chip. The chip could not get cold enough and kept going into thermal cutoff. Buy a bigger box.

How can I get it back can anybody help its XP home and it has been on this machine for 2 years happilyTo choose an ACCOUNT type in WINDOWS XP Home click on User ACCOUNTS in the Control Panel. Once you select a user you can click on the "Change My Account Type" button.

You will be able to choose between Administrator and Limited and can see a brief description of the abilities of each account type. You are required to have at least one Administrator account, so be sure to leave or create one- but save it for use when necessary and stick to using Limited accounts wherever possible.

The instructions given here should help you resolve your issue msoft2004 copyright...Unfortunatly there is no accounts to choose from the administrator account is missing and it is only giving me access to a limited account. In User Accounts it has 1.Create A Password 2.Change My Picture 3.Change my Net Passport and thats all. As you can see it has totally locked me out of my own machine even trying to re-install windows I need an Administrators Account to do this but it wont even let me do this my hair is getting grey by the second.http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmHi

Thanks for all your help but it SEEMED the easiest way to sort my problem was to buy some floppies and re-format the whole HARD disk and start again.

That has cured the problem

Solve : .DLL's messed up?

Answer»

Somehow all my .DLL's are set to open with NOTEPAD. What can I do to get them to open with the correct program? What is the correct program? You should not open .DLL files at all. Windows will warn you that is a system file if you try to do so.use the restore function on your pc to rectify this problem..I didnt change them, someone else did. I just need to know what is the correct program that is supposed to be associated with these files so that I can reset it. you could try this c:\drive.../TOOLS /folder options/view....setup defaults..DONT know what folder options would do to reset the programs that open other programs. I did as you requested, no progress. File still opens with NOTEPAD.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q306/5/51.asp&NoWebContent=1I read your reply, visited that link, but it is asking me to choose an option under the Properities of the file that I wish to change. I dont have the option to use the web to find the correct program. I have a list of programs, and I can browse programs on my COMPUTER. I found RUNDLL32 which should be the correct program to run DLL's, but when I apply the CHANGES to the file, it doesnt change from using NOTEPAD to open the .DLL's.I think the error is that the link you provided is troubleshooting for Windows XP. I am on NT.

You cannot format your Hard Drive Disk in Windows.

You will either have to use a bootdisk or use the XP CD-ROM as a boot CD.

Do so by setting your CD-ROM as the first boot device in the BIOS> Quote

I am trying to format my hard disk and reload windows xp

You cannot format drive C: from drive C: but you can format it from drive A: with the XP Home ... OR ... Professional bootdiskettes (They are different) and your Windows XP CD.

OR you can alter your BIOS so that the 1st boot device, the floppy drive, is altered to become the CD-ROM drive and just use the CD.

Can I ask you what the problem is that is causing you to need to format the drive? Maybe it can be cured without formatting.

If you are going to re-install XP you should, first of all, slipstream the 266Mb SP2 DOWNLOAD (Or order the free Windows XP SP2 Service Pack on CD from Microsoft to do this) into your Original Microsoft XP CD, using the freeware program AutoStreamer 1·0, to make an .ISO image from which you can burn a new Windows XP-SP2 CD and then you can do a really clean install.

If you have an OEM install and cannot slipstream SP2 with AutoStreamer then apply SP2 immediately after installing your basic Operating System, and BEFORE installing anything else, just run chkdsk and defrag before you do.

It is NOT a good idea to convert FAT32 volumes to NTFS as you can get 512 byte clusters and a fragmented Master File Table (MFT) which will slow your system down.

It is MUCH better to format an EMPTY drive directly to NTFS making absolutely certain that you get 4096 byte clusters.

I use an 8·0Gb drive to install XP to and up to three additional Logical drives per physical drive.

To check if you have 4096 byte clusters run chkdsk from a DOS prompt in a DOS window or from the Recovery Console DOS prompt.

Solve : xp pro install not finding hardware?

Answer»

Hi, I am installing xp pro (not upgrading) and after the install, I cannot get on the internet because the system does not detect a Nvidia Nforce MCP network controler.
How can it not detect a piece of hardware on the system? I have done the install TWO times now same results.

I have on the same HD xp HOME and it runs fine and detects everything it needs to....

thanks for the helpHave you applied SP2 to the install, with the Micosoft firewall? Possibly the firewall needs to be turned off to let your own firewall regulate all connections.

Just guessing, as that is what happened to me when I re-installed XP Professional after slipstreaming SP2 into the Original XP CD.

Have you formatted to FAT32 or NTFS (?) as a matter of personal interest. If it is an onboard NIC, you will have to install the motherboard drivers.Sorry, but will you say why you have XP Home on the ... same ... hard drive?

Is this really necessary?Hi,

How can I install the drivers if there is no hardware present? It does not detect the Nvidia Nforce MCP network controler.

I tried to do an upgrade from xp home to xp pro and in the middle it ask's for the i386 folder to be put in the cd drive. Say what?

"slipstreaming SP2 into the Original XP CD."

How do I do that then? Thanks for the help. maybe you should have chose customize when setting up winxp pro have a LOOK at an emulation of how to install winxp pro on an old hard drive >http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdoldhdd/indexemu.htm slipsteam eplained here>http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2000_xp_sp_slipstreaming.htmeven if it cant find the hardware, have you tried to manually scan for hardware in your control panel? or if you use the autorun on your mobo disc , installing the software/drivers for it, winxp might then pick up the hardware. Back to your post...norton you say which norton...and dump zone alarm...and download sygate...are you using ie 6...I'm using Norton system Suite, 04 ,and I will dump zone alarm ,ever since I updated it , it has been a real headache with conflicts ,etc.I have IE 6 ,but also having same problem on firefox, which is what default browser is.No java app will run.Keeps giving me same message as in first post.Have uninstalled and re installed it twice.Dan_Brown.....What Java are you using ? M/S Virtual machine or Sun Systems ? Have you D/l all the available fixes or patchs for ME ?
I did a bit of looking and found this .....perhaps it will help.
The problem is that if you ever had 1.3.1_xx version of the JRE loaded, then loaded a 1.4.2_xx version, some registry KEYS were REMOVED, and that's why you're getting the "cannot load runtime environment" error.
Rather than manually adding registry keys for those of you who are uncomfortable with that, you just need to re-install the 1.3.1_10 version of hte JRE. If you need to have both the 1.4.2 version and 1.3.1 version available, you have to install the 1.3.1 version LAST so it will recreate the registry keys removed by thte 1.4.2 installation.
This problem is apparently fixed by sun in the 1.4.2_4 version of the JRE (the installation simply re-creates the registry entries that are removed), which is not released yet (as far as I know).

let US know if this helps

Solve : Killing explorer.exe?

Answer»

Is it so DANGEROUS for the system, as it says the TASK Manager, to kill this process?
I always kill it, when I use MS-DOS applications. It has a strange way to control their CPU usage. When did this start happening ? ?
What VER. of Windows is this ? ?
You may need to do a Repair Install.I'm sorry, if I explained it not as I understand it.
There is no danger for my Proffesional Edition as soon, as I don't kill this process.
I only ASK, if this warning is true. I only think this warning is for begginers of Windows, to not use Task Manager for any reason. Here's some information on stopping explorer.Thank you very much for help.

Solve : System unstable?

Answer»

Your Service Tag # should be on a sticker on the back/rear of the machine... Quote from: Mackem1983 on December 22, 2009, 04:06:12 PM

I just COPIED the information that it says when i click goto control panel and then to system. The service tag is provided on top of my computer, if your confuzed then it doesnt give me much hope of understanding any of this .

1. It is what it is. I can only work with the information you provide. Either the different Dell models are compatible or there is something wrong somewhere (or at least inconsistent). Since you're ultimately responsible for the computer and have to live with the consequences, suggest you contact Dell to verify what you have (and what your options are).

Quote from: Mackem1983 on December 22, 2009, 04:06:12 PM
So if i go through the dell website to try and restore what your saying is that everything might break? If so what would your opinion be for me to do, is there any other options?

2. I'm saying you should "backup" your personal data before continuing your repair or recovery efforts. If your system has been damaged by malware or the subsequent repair attempts, there's no guarantee the "hidden" restore/recovery partition (if it exists) hasn't been damaged. Even if there was no malware, there's no guarantee a restoration from a recovery partition will be successful. You've also indicated you may not have the Windows XP Setup CD (further limiting your recovery options). It's also possible you may have a hardware problem. If the hard drive fails, you're not going to recover anything.

I'm recommending that you "backup" your personal data to media "off the computer" and then attempt system recovery with whatever options Dell may have provided on your "preinstalled" hard drive. This may mean a restoration of the hard drive (and operating system) to the state it was in when "shipped". Generally this means an operating system without your user data or any applications you subsequently installed.

3. I don't know what the problem "currently" is. Your descriptions are vague or generic; e.g "And rather than BSOD now my computer is more prone to freezing/crashing".
     a. What do I do with that statement? I have no "specific" information or data to work from.
     b. Are we troubleshooting a "blue screen", a "freeze", or a "crash"?
     c. Can you reproduce the symptoms?
     d. Can you describe the sequence of events that lead to the blue screen, freeze, and/or crash?
     f. If you boot into "Safe Mode", do you still experience the symptoms?

4. Yes, there are options you could try; but I don't feel you have the skill, resources, or temperment to FOLLOW through. Not to mention the time and effort involved with no guarantee of success. A repair shop would simply reinstall the operating system (with or without user data) rather than spend the time troubleshooting an unknown number of problems.
     a. You could try the command "sfc /scannow" to ensure you have a consistent set of system files that are neither missing nor corrupt, but this might require the Windows XP Setup CD for source file access. Or it might not. I gave you "reference" links for this, but either you didn't read them or you didn't understand them.
     b. You could try the commands "chkdsk /f" and 'chkdsk /f /r" on each of your logical disk drives to verify and fix the integrity of your file system(s). This can be done from Windows XP operating system (or during boot) or from the Windows XP Recovery Console.
     c. You could use "verifier" utility to catch and identify drivers that are behaving badly. Poorly designed third party drivers can cause BSOD, freeze, or crash.
     d. You could perform various levels of a "clean" boot and/or "Safe Mode" boot to see whether limiting what applications and/or system services start prevent the freeze/crash symptoms.
     e. You could uninstall the security software to see if problem goes away. Of course you should disconnect from internet while performing these tests. Security software suites are notorious for causing system conflicts.
     f. You could perform a "repair" installation of the operating system, but this would require the appropriate Windows XP Setup CD (and will revert your system to the service pack level of the CD without any subsequent updates).\
     g. You could run memory diagnostic to verify integrity of memory modules.
     h. You could run manufacturer supplied hard drive diagnostic program.
     i. You could run software to "stress" the motherboard and/or CPU.
     j. You could monitor the temperature sensor values of CPU, hard disk drive, and possibly video card (heat can cause problems).

This all seems very drastic from where i was a week ago when i came looking for help.
5. The Riddled with VIRUSES thread? Please...

6. You need to start from where you are. (The malware removal procedures probably removed your System Restore points.) What do you want to do? Quote
I have cleaned out inside the computer and checked for anything being loose of which i couldnt find. I have installed a graphics card and power supply which i found very tricky.

Why did you REPLACE the power supply?
Did you use a Dell PSU? Did you choose one that was of equal or greater wattage?

How did you clean it? Did you use compressed air?I have succesfully restored my computer and eveything seems to be fine. It seems as if i rubbed some people up the wrong way and I am sorry for this, either something was lost in translation or there was a lack of communication. Anywhoo id like to say a big thank you to everyone who tried to help with my first problem and problems subsequently. I shant bother you again.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year. No!
Please bother us again. That's what we're here for.

How did you solve you're problem? Did you do a clean install?I did a system restore so that it restored eveything back to factory settings, I had checked a lot of the diagnostics that were given to check if I felt half confident it wasnt going to explode and was reasonably confident the hard drive wasnt broken.

The only difficult part of it was that I couldnt get to the system restore screen normally, I had to try to restore it to an earlier point (of which i knew would fail) and complete the instructions when it was loading up that way (ctrl + F11).The last thing you should do now is visit the Virus and Spyware Forum, just to check if anything BAD was restored.

Solve : Virus in the MB Bios??

-Found another video card, installed it and I still have the same results
-Also I took a look at my MB book and in the note SECTION it says that they cannot guarantee that all DDR 400 memory will
work so I took a look at the memory I have installed and it is 1 stick of DDR266 and 1 stick of DDR 400. the bios recognizes both. I removed the DDR400 stick and I get the same results and the BIOS shows less memory.
I went ahead and got some new DDR266 coming 1GB (7.95 a stick dirt cheap) its on the way.
none of my older (junk) computers I have have the power supply hook ups
-also the battery for the CMOS is showing 3.20v in the BIOS but I'll get another today to try
-I wish the BIOS did a power supply check. you would think it would because a power supply is pretty IMPORTANT. I will see about getting a new

OK i tried to run the HD recovery floppy and it worked this time. It doesn't do much except check the disk for errors and it had none when either check was done. after I did this the computer does its usual rebooting but I see the windows XP start up WINDOW again for about 10sec. then it powers down and reboots. I don't know what this means again? maybe the OS is corrupted on the HD? if that is so how can you do ANYTHING if you have no access to the HD? if it at least let me go to C: prompt I could do something.
when I run the computer with the new HD (with no OS yet) installed I get that NTLDR missing error again. I'm now trying to run the HD's installation cd again

Solve : Using routers for connecting computers to the internet?

Answer»

Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 13, 2009, 10:50:24 AM

You have to do as much as you can to get rid of the yellow marks.
There can be hardware conflicts present. Windows has limited ability to identify hardware conflicts, but the yellow marks are enough to let you know something is not right, but the hardware manager can not tell you what is exactly wrong. You want to have good drivers for everything. The drivers dip down into the raw MACHINE code level and can mess up Interrupt Service Routines and I/O port assignments.

Now in some CASES a bad driver does not hurt anything. Maybe not this time.

Also, it still can be something else. Another post mentioned the WEP problem. Some hardware and XP combos have a hard time with this. That is one reason why I SAID try another adapter.

This link may apply in your case.

This problem is with my Systemax desktop;

S/I 128 MB PC133 16x64 SDRAM PNY
FIC AZ11 Motherboard

S/I ATI rage fury 32MB/TV CMPL

Monitor is Veiwsonic E70f and the driver provided by the manufacturere for this device has been installed.

BTW:
I'm not very computer literate, and the solution may be really simple for you all but I may need some "dummy" terms and directions.
Thanks for any help!!!

For someone who admits to not being very pc literate you sure do have a problem which will stretch your capabilities to understand.

This is the M'Soft KB article in which they explain the possible reasons. You give lots of info on your pc except the Operating System which would be nice to know.

Please browse the article and get back if you think you can tackle the job of diagnosing where your problem lies..

Late edit: Here is another article discussing possible virus infection. Are you sure your pc is MALWARE free :-?

Even later edit: There is the probability that your problems stems from not using the best drivers... When you ran your recovery disk did you reinstall the drivers :-?

Thanks for the help and links.
I now have true color 32 bit, 800 x 600 pixels and the monitor screen displays everything just fine.
I re-installed the drivers that were included on the recovery disc, which I assumed :-/ contained sufficient drivers for this monitor to operate correctly, but when you mentioned not using the best driver as a possible cause, I installed drivers from a separate disc that has all the software for RUNNING S/I ATI rage fury 32MB/TV CMPL, which, as I listed, is part of the system I have as it was when purchased new. I didn't realize I needed that disc in addition to the Systemax Recovery CD and Systemax Driver Resource CD. There are also 3 other disc that were supplied with the PC when purchased new.
This Systemax desktop PC seems to me like a car that was delivered to the dealership from the factory with no options, then the DEALER installed all options - post factory assembly.
I have an E-Machines desktop running Windows ME, Intel Celeron, and that unit has everything needed to fully recover the OS on 2 disc, including drivers, software, ect. for all originally supplied programs, and no other disc are needed.
I suppose there may be an advantage to having MULTIPLE / additional, application specific disc for recovery purpose?

Anyway, thanks again for your help!!!

I will likely request your expert knowledge again in the future so you may as well go ahead and tell me what I can get you for Christmas.

I can't believe I missed listing which OS I have.
It's Windows ME

Have a great day!!!

Dell Demension 3000

SoundMax Intergrated audio

My problem is when I try and open 95% of my games they will just minimize and when I click on them they pop up for a second and then minimize again. That is basicly it. No error messages, no freezing, they just wont stay up. When I click on them and the pop up I can hear sound and see it for a second. If anybody has any ideas I would love to hear them! I've been trying to fix this for the last COUPLE weeks updating drivers and doing this and doing that. I really just don't where to go or what to try next. Thanks!

This happens with some of my games, manily the older ones. What I do is close all UNNECESSARY programs, I disable my NETWORK access, switch off my FIREWALL, antivirus background scanner, msn, and any other programs that I don't need to have running while I'm playing a game. It works every time.

Solve : Windows cannot find NTDETECT.exe?

Answer»

I was just requesting an answer to the question.Michael, there is a reason why I told you to rename HiJackThis.exe to something else like HJT2K6.exe for example, some malware will hide from HiJackThis if you don't rename the executable. In addition to that it doesn't look like you deleted the C:\Program Files\CNNIC folder, you need to do so. Also, run another HJT scan (normal mode should be fine as long as system restore is still off) and put a check next to the following and fix it:

O8 - Extra context MENU item: Access Internet Keyword - C:\Program Files\CNNIC\Cdn\cnnic.htm

Anyway, in regards to your original problem...I need you to clarify something. At first you said NTDETECT.exe and now you say NTDETECT.COM so which is it?

- JPH Quote

I was just requesting an answer to the question.

So here is it:

Quote
I did googled for it...but I was googled for the error message and not "ntdetect" only...seems that was why i got nonsense results that day...
I am using Norton...and it couldn't detect anything about it....and the Symantec website also has no information about this ntdetect.exe....
My internet connection was on whole day so I couldn't really recall any POSSIBLE
candidate of website resulting in the situation.

Michael, there is a reason why I told you to rename HiJackThis.exe to something else like HJT2K6.exe for example, some malware will hide from HiJackThis if you don't rename the executable.
I am sorry that I misunderstood that and didn't read carefully.....I mis-read that you said renaming the log file HijackThis.txt to something else (in order to avoid overwriting).

Quote
In addition to that it doesn't look like you deleted the C:\Program Files\CNNIC folder, you need to do so.
The folder does not exist.

Anyway, in regards to your original problem...I need you to clarify something. At first you said NTDETECT.exe and now you say NTDETECT.COM so which is it?
Yes, initially when I clicked on the drives, a dialogue box will pop up saying that NTDETECT.exe cannot be found. Which seems to be a threat.
But after I follow what suggested by pcdoc4christ in
Quote
These might help:

http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/ntdetect/
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/ntdetect/
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ_SMALL.AYZ&VSect=T
, it has became the situation now, where when I click on the drive, NTDETECT.com will run in a blank command prompt windows for less than 2 seconds, then nothing happen.Michael, it is possible that the C:\Program Files\CNNIC folder is hidden. If it wasn't still there then the last file I told you to fix with HJT wouldn't exist as it resides in a sub-directory of that folder. Just to be sure boot into safe mode and double-check. Make sure Windows Explorer is set to show hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View > Hidden files and folders >click Show hidden files and folders and then click Apply then OK)

As for the original problem, try this:

Download the attached zip file and apply it like you did the one before. Extract the reg file, right-click and choose Merge. After the reg file has been successfully imported reboot (important) and then check if the problem still persists.

- JPHI have unhide all hidden and system files, and the CNNIC folder is not found.

I've done what you suggest with the Fix.reg, but that doesn't change anything.

Please refer the attached latest HJT log file (I renamed the HijackThis.exe to ABC123.exe)

Thanks.
Michael, I don't see anything malicious in your new HJT logfile.

I can't believe I didn't catch this before but...
If Autoplay is an option when you right-click the C:\ drive...
Go into your C:\ drive with Windows Explorer and see if there is a autorun.inf file there. If so DELETE it.

- JPHWhen I right click on C: or D:, the options AVAILABLE in the upper section are:

(weird character)
AutoPlay
Search...
Open
Explore
Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware
System Information

After I deleted the Autorun.inf in both C:\ and D:\ , things are back to normal with the weird characters gone!

So I guess the Autorun.inf was create by the Autodetect.exe virus?
What else does the virus do?

Thanks. The autorun.inf files and the strange character when right-clicking on the drives was probably a result of the Chinese infection. The "weird character" was probably Chinese letters or a fubar'd displaying of Chinese characters.

NTDETECT.EXE was most likely just a trojan downloader, it's job was to install the Chinese malware.

Anyway, I'm glad things are back to normal now. Thanks for reporting back. You can turn system restore back on now if you haven't already and create a new restore point.

Solve : systems config utilitiessystems confiug?

Answer» HELLO!
How can I get safetly delete of some of the programs that are running in my systems config utilities start up WINDOW. Some of the programs are duplications. Please help. ThanksType the name into Google and see what the startup item is before you disable anything
To disable a startup item, uncheck the box next to it
Don't disable yor antivirus protection, firewall etc as you'll be without protection
When you change things using msconfig (I assume that's what you're using, if it's not then say so) on your next boot there will be a message about making changes, just check the box and press OK and it won't bother you again
Need any more help just askge36-

We need much more information than you have provided.
What is your machine and operating system.
Do you have any Startup control programs?
Antivirus? Antispyware? Have you scanned for problems?
What does Taskmanager tell you is going on if you have it on your system?

In XP, msconfig can be a dangerous place for a newb.
Before you start making a lot of changes there please get back with
as much information as you can provide. This type of thing can either be
quite simple or very involved depending on what exactly is going on.

Will wait for your reply.

1101docHey out there!

My OS is win xp pro ed. I am using NOD 32 antivirus and AD ware SE. Now the problem is not that they are checked and running, the problem is that alot of them are duplicated and I am trying to delete some of the ones that are duplicated. Here is a list of exe. files that are running in the start up windows.
AcroTray, clone cd tray, ctfmon, hkcmd, igfxpers, igfxtray, mm_tray, nero check, pdvdserv, smaxpnp, jusched, winamp, the other ones are my antivirus programs. Thanks for any help.A quick Google search REVEALS the purpose of all of these .exes
You don't really need any of them, but some of them provide easy-to-find options in the system tray so you may not want to eliminate them
Google all of the names of the .exes and see what you think, just click the first or second link on each search to get some detailed info about the program and its functions
As for duplicate programs, have you tried using CCleaner (get the link from the software FAQ) to clean your startup entries? It will remove redundant entries that are not there, eg startup items for uninstalled programs
Hope this helps, and if you need more help just askCCleaner is good and a basic tool, but you may want another startup control program like
WinPatrol, Whst's Running, or Windows Inspector. These offer enchanced user interface and
other features as well. All available free.

Ctfmon has to do with Languages. Go to: Control Panel>Regional and Language Options>
Languages>Details>Advanced. Under System Configuration, uncheck the box that says:
"Turn off advanced text services."

jusched is the automatic java UPDATER. If you'd rather do it manually and stop this process
go to:Control Panel>Java>Updates and uncheck "Check for updates automatically."
You'll get a scary dialog, just answer YES. Then remember to periodically manually update your java.

I don't recognize the others, but the above advice is good. Google'em. Process Library offers a neat little add-on for Taskmanager that takes you to their process database about any process,
and Sysinternals offer a Process Explorer that is what Taskmanager wants to be when it grows up.

For someone who is interested in this kind of stuff, you'll find both very helpful.

You may want to add to you antispyware kit. Spybot and A-Squared are both good freeware.

Good Luck. Glad to learn that it's nothing bad.

Solve : Whenever I press certain keys, windows come up.?

Answer»

The problem is when I press on certain keys random windows come up. Its all the windows "hotkeys", for example If I press just R, Run will come up. F, the search ETC etc. Part of the problem may have been that I was fooling with a Hotkey CREATOR but im not eniterly sure. At the moment I have the computer running a virus scan, and i'll reboot it after to see if that brings it back to normal.

The comp is the one in my specs.

PS: my control key isnt stuck down because turned on the onscreen KEYBOARD and the same thing happens.

PPS: Im not going to restart my computer, in fear of the problem still occuring and I couldnt type my password in.Well I restarted it now its fine...I thought I'd let EVERYONE know, that the culprit behind my computer acting strange was a windows media PLAYER. Do the games actually play OK apart from the dark colours?
Do other games work?
Is it just a problem with 3D applications or does it happen with other programs too?Difficult to say if they play OK cos you can't see very much, however, they look fine. Only happened on these two particupar games, which I assume are 3d applicatinss, but not sure how I would know?Try Changing the Screen Resolution.. or change the brightness of the monitor.. I have nvidia Geforce FX5500 and it works great with Polar Express and Simms 2 and NFS Monst Wanted and etc.. and i have a slower computer then the one that you have.. and they work great.. Or try another thing go to the NVIDIA Control Panel and adjust the settings.. with the colors and the display.. thats what i did.. i remember now.. so yeah try that. Quote

Yes, games are generally 3d applications
So other games are fine? Strange....
Try Maksim's advice and check the settings in the nVidia control panel
Also, check the nVidia website to see if there is an updated driver, that might solve your problem
Finally, check the in-game settings (if you can see them) and play around with the display settings, see if that helps

Solve : Re: Defragmenter cannot defragment completely.?

Answer»

Try O & O defrag. See the software FAQ (link in my signature.More infomation, like your OS? (Assuming XP) What defragmenter tool are you USING?

Have you tried error checking? On my COMPUTER right click the drive, properties, tools, check now, tick automatically fix ERRORS but untick bad SECTORS option. You will probably need to restart your computer (if asked press yes).

It's possible that the defragmenter has determined that the effort needed to defragment those files is greater than the amount of time that would be saved by defragmenting them. (For example a 500mb file in 2 fragments has neglible performance impact).

Apart from this, are there any other problems on your machine? If not, it's probably best not to worry about it.

Solve : Power management has disappeared?

Answer»

One of my seniorweb clients reports: (Win XP Home)
The standby/hibernate button (SYSTEM turn off) has become grey. When going to the hibernate tab has also disappeared as well the bottom options in power schemes (the one that set system standby and system hibernate).
It may have happened during the installation of new printer drivers but the user does not want to restore as apparently it took a long time to find and install the correct new drivers.

Can anybody advise how to get the power management back? This usually happens when you install a device driver that is not power management compliant, so I'm afraid you've got your answer right there. Thanks Rob; I had not SEEN this before, but it makes total sense (in retrospect).
I have asked the user to bring his computer to me and will start CHECKING all drivers. Is the printer in question particularly old? I guess the user may just have to live with it, if that's the case.I do not know: it is a HP laser printer and they, apparently had all kind of problems installing it in the first place.
But it is definitely not new, as a son of the owner has returned home (temporarily) PENDING a divorce etc. and BROUGHT this printer with him.
Anyway, I will get the system next week and check for myself; see what can be done. And, I guess, the printer will be there for a limited period of time anyway.
My mistake was that I did not link the printer driver with power management.
Thanks again for your support.

Solve : Can not get into certain websites?

I have a HP M50 ( ya I know...it's old...lol)
There is a 1/2 dozen of my favorite websites that I can not open. I can get the home page, but when I go to open forums ( or anything else) I get a white blank screen and the bottom left side of screen above START ( on the task bar) it will say done.

I'm going crazy not being able to visit these sites, and would appreciate any help sent my way.

Thank you very much

What OS & browser? You may need up upgrade your browser or there maybe an APPLET missing that you need to open these pages fully.

You can find out what version of your browser you have by usually clicking on the Help menu option then clicking About.

Knowing the browser you are using would be very helpful. And which pages are you trying to visit?Browser is Internet Explorer 6.0

Websites are Snowmobile sites and sites to download photos.....Could you give us a couple of the website addresses that you are trying to visit and we will take a loooky Check your HOSTS file which can usually be found in "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc". If there any entries in it other than "127.0.0.1 LOCALHOST" remove them, save the file and restart your PC.

If there was anything other than the localhost entry then it was probably some adware that put them in there so run any antivirus, anti spyware/adware/malware software you have, to check for it.midnight....... Could you post a link to the site your trying to get to from your favourites ?

Hah FED no, I'm guessing that you know what they are all for and that you probably put them there.

However midnight say's he is computer illiterate so in his case I'm guessing he wouldn't have messed about with/added entries to his hosts file. Ergo if there are entries in there they could very well be what are causing the sites to be inacessable. Quote

For some reason, you posted those web addresses in a way that causes them to go to an ftp link. Here they are, in workable form:

I had no problem viewing them in Firefox 1.5 or IE 7. I also fired up my old Win 98SE box, with IE 5.5 and viewed them.

Solve : Re: Blue Screen Crash Stop Error Codes?

Free DOWNLOAD to test RAM at www.memtest86.com It creates a bootable floppy so hook that up. Check each RAM stick for at least 30 minutes, then all together.

Also check the hard drive with the free diagnostics which can be DOWNLOADED from the appropriate hard drive maker's site. I SUSPECT mis-matched RAM...

After you have done as GX1_Man has suggested i would hook that HDD as a SLAVE in a machine that has a burner and retrieve your's and your Dad's DATA before anything else...

Anybody can explain me when and how to upgrade the BIOS?

I m looking forward to your help.

Thanks a lot for your share! You never upgrade your BIOS unless it is absolutely needed.

Sometimes upgrades to your computer usually hardware, maybe
software will require an upgrade of the BIOS.

Unless you have a real NEED don't EVER do it. You need to go to the manufacturers WEBSITE, look up your BIOS type, and download the update. The site usually has instructions you can print out and follow. HOWEVER... take heed to street1's advice. Screwing around with the BIOS can make your system unusable

Solve : Computer rebooting by itself.?

Answer»

A few NIGHTS ago before I went to bed I left my computer on playing some music.. when I came back in the morning I noticed my computer was rebooted and at the start up screen for some reason..

I've left it on for a couple of days now at night and everytime I wake up to check on it I find it has rebooted.. what could be causing this? What can I do to prevent it?

Appreciate any help, thanks.

Right click my computer, and select properties, and then the advanced tab. Under startup and recovery, click SETTINGS, and uncheck the box that says automatically restart. Click apply/ok the required number of times, and reboot your system.

Now, INSTEAD of your computer re-booting when there`s an error. You should receive an error message(BSOD) telling you what caused the problem.

Solve : Oh so slow.?

Answer»

In an attempt to speed up my pc, I have INVESTED in a Seagate 320GB external hard drive. I've moved all the music and pics onto this but the pc is still slow on start up and for all tasks. I have 4 GB of program files but still have 14GB of space on the pc hard drive. Is there any improvements I can make ?

p.s. I'm no computer bofin, so be gentle with the gargon !

Many Thanks NooNoo64...... How about telling us about the machine ......... the make and model , What processor is in it , how much ram .........
Details like that will assist in offering an opinion.
What sort of maintainance do you regularly do ?

DL65 15% free drive space is recommended for proper Windows function. Please answer with how much free space you have as well as the other questions put to you.I have a P4 1.8Ghz with 256ram...I know...it's old like me. Maintenance is a gray area, although I do run the norton disc clean which scans the system. Out of 40Gb I have on the C: 2.93 of the 18.4 available and the D: 11.8 of the 14Gb's. This is after the music and pictures (big files) have been moved to the 320Gb hard drive.
I'm a little worried now because maybe I'm just getting USED to faster PC's at work.

Your thoughts
Thanks256 meg RAM and Norton on an XP system can be a slowdown, but I would definitely clear up some disk space on the C drive. What are you using for spyware protection? If this PC is running XP, yuo will see a significant improvement, upgrading that 256MB to 512MB or more.Rob Pomeroy is correct. After you have the required amount of free space, disk space has no significant IMPACT on speed. (Though having breathing space is always a good thing.) Buying some better memory will allow your PC to run faster, longer. In fact, as far as computer parts go, it's hardly expensive. A 512 MB stick sells for about $75.How much disk space is being used for My Documents? If that's still on C, you could move it to D.If you have removed so many large files did you run your FILE defragmenting program even on Win XP ?

If you haven't then I would suggest running a disk clean up and then running scandisk & defrag

On Win 98x you can click on Start Run and type in Scandisk and click OK for error checking
and Start Run type in defrag and click ok for the file defragmentation

WinXP
Double click on my computer
Right click your mouse and select Properties from the drop down menu
Select Disk Cleanup
Once you have done that click on the tools menu tab in the same window
then run Error-Checking then the defragmentation

Hey there, I really would appreciate it if someone could just SPARE me five minutes of their time? :)

..Well...as the subject line suggests...my computer just will not load! I haven't the foggiest what could be wrong with it? ...I've opened it up and everything still seems connected etc...and I....I don't know what to do? It was fine when I was on it a few weeks ago...I was downloading music off a P2P program (ARES) and I've never had any problems with it before, I then disconnected from ARES and then disconnected fromt he internet, leaving myself still logged on, I went and had a bath and a few hours later my little brother was knocking on the door saying their was a problem with the computer, his words were "The computer won't turn on" and I immediately replied "what do you mean it WON'T turn on!!? It was already on!!!" ..I went downstairs and inspected the computer....sure enough he was right...the screen was blank....and the side light was flashing (indicating that it was on standby) and I pressed the power button on the tower....and there was a clicking noise coming from my speakers which only lasted 5seconds and then...I don't know...you can hear the fan going...the original LOADING noise I guess, but then.....nothing?? ..The orange light is constantly flashing...the fan is going....the moniter side light is flashing....but nothing else??

I understand I shoudl take it down to the computer SHOP...but I don't want to pay 40 odd pound just for it to be wiped!!

I miss my computer so MUCH!!! Someone please help!!! :'(What Operating System did you have running? Windows XP? How old is your computer, do you know?

-Hale's Computer ServiceHi
Sounds possibly that the motherboard may have died. I've had this before..... lights on but nobody home. The motherboard is the big electronic board which the processor sits on and your hard disk plugs into. Mine was killed by a power spike so these days I don't run a computer without a surge PROTECTOR. In my case I changed the motherboard and connected everything backup and it worked a treat... no data loss whatsoever.

Are you getting any beeps at switch on ? Any display on the monitor ?

If the motherboard is faulty/dead then your local computer repair services should be able to replace it. Can't guarantee data loss though because you don't know what might have killed the motherboard in the first place.

if your hard disk failed then you should see an error message on the screen which I assume you didn't get.

Hope this helps

Solve : Outlook Express 6 Address Book problem?

Answer»

I'm having a problem with my ADDRESS book in my Outlook Express... i got 2 computers running the same exact version, but only one seems to have the following bug.

In the address book table there are 4 columns - Office, Company, Name and Email.

Normally when I fill up the Office and Company details, they appear on the table. However, the moment I exit the address book or Outlook Express and re-enter, they disappear from the table!

Yet, when i click on the Contact Details, they reveal the Office and Company details are indeed still there. Clicking OK will reinstate the details onto the table once again.

Please, can anyone give me an idea of why this is happening?Windows version? Service pack? Virus/spyware protection? More info?my apologies - here are the details

Windows XP Home SP 2
Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180

Trend Micro PC-cilin 14 (2006) Anti-virus
Yahoo Toolbar Anti-spy

Both of the computers are basically configured in this manner... I have tried to resolve this problem for almost a week, and I'm no closer to the solution.

What, exactly, do you mean by address book table? What table? "Table" is not an OE address book term, as far as I know, and I've used OE a long time. So, it seems you're using your own terminology here.
keyven........ Your going to have to LEARN to be a little more specific about the issue ......... It sounds LIKE you are trying to edit the address book ...but I'm not certain ............ If you cant explain it ...please take a screen shot and post it .....Then we will know exactly what your refering to.
I think you will find that your outlook is working as it was designed.

By table, i meant a tabular view of your Name, Email, etc, etc. It is a little like Windows Explorer (using View-->Details), where you can sort by clicking on the headings

Anyways I discovered the solution:

1) Open Address Book
2) Under the Address Book window, clicked on Tools -> Options
3) There are 2 options under a new window, Data Sharing:
  i) Something to the effect of keeping your contacts in the Microsoft Outlook Contacts Folder
ii) Something to the effect of keeping your contacts in the Outlook Address Book (.wab) file

So it turns out the first one had been selected, and so i had the problem mentioned earlier, as well as not being able to import/export the contacts. Once I changed it to the second option, everything worked perfectly fine.

Thanks for trying to help. Sorry if i wasn't clear enough.

Solve : help: recycle bin icon says full, nothing in it.?

Answer»

this doesn't seem to be a MAJOR problem, but.. well, i just noticed it. must've happened last night. i have a sony vaio PCV-V300G - link http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00029YYI8.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg. windows XP home edition. pentium 4, 2.8ghZ processor, 480MB ram, etc.

the recycle bin icon indicates there's a file inside. i open it, nothing in the bin. i click restore all items, nothing happens. i click "empty recycle bin" and it asks me do i really want to delete 'WINDOWS'? i guess this is some kind of virus. i can't get the invisible file out, and i can't delete it. any ideas? need more INFO?Well, you could create a small text file with Notepad and delete it to the Recyle Bin just to get something in there that actually appears when you open it, and then empty your Recyle Bin. In other, I'm saying this might clear the Recyle Bin of that mysterious item.
However, the fact that you're GETTING a message referring to 'WINDOWS' may warrant a more cautious approach here. What virus protection are you using? How about spyware removal tools? Are you the only user on that machine ? ?
Are you running any Norton/Symantec products ? ?

Instead of using the Recycle bin to view what's in there have you tried Explorer ?i am the only user. i run norton internet security and antivirus consistently.

i tried the small text suggestion and it worked. "do you want to delete these two items?" i clicked yes, windows didnt' crash. (yay.) i'm GUESSING it was some kind of virus or spyware.. don't know why norton didn't get it. thanks for the help, soybean & PATIO.

Solve : Bad loading times when using MS Office functions?

Answer»

Brand New Windows XP Professional SP2
Brand New MS Office Professional 2000 (tested with Professional 2003 with the same results)

Some common functions like Print Preview (in excel and word) always take about 20-30 secs to load, even with a small document... and there are numerous other slowdowns, such as resizing-by-dragging a column in Excel may take about 10 secs before you see the effect

So what I did was reinstall the entire program AND delete any leftover files. That seemed to resolve the problem - for a few days.

Now although the common functions work smoothly and consistently, other horrible slowdowns have cropped up, such as editing in Excel's Page Break Preview, or even selecting the Landscape option in Page Setup. The major difference is that these slowdowns are almost completely random... they may occur despite multiple REBOOTS, and then never occur for a hours or days after that.

The documents work perfectly fine on any other computer, so it's not corruption or anything. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance~keyven........ How about some info on the machine your having these issues with.......... ?

dl65 gah... i didnt think of that o.O; sorry

1800+ AMD Athlon
512 Mb 333Mhz DDR

Machine is not that new... it's almost 2 years old... However, i performed a new installation of Windows XP Pro when I set this up. It's been known to randomly reset itself before this new installation, BUT it doesnt do it anymore and chooses to sulk by screwing my MS Office instead

Will be grateful if I get any advice :-/How much free space is there on the hard DRIVE ?

Plenty~ more than 50 Gb... yeah guess i missed that too

at the time of testing, no other major software was installed... not even anti-viruses/spyware. The computer is not connected to the Web in any way, to a domain (that is also INTENTIONALLY isolated from the web)

So other than the Win XP Home SP2+Office 2000 Pro installation in mid-October, there is no updates implemented from microsoft's website. However, I dont think the lack of updates should be the cause.

The program was the MS Office 2000 Pro... i reinstalled it and deleted any files even vaguely related to it (the uninstaller doesn't remove every single file)...

The steps I took basically went like this:

1) Uninstalled Office 2000 Pro.
2) Re-installed Office 2000 Pro. Errors remained exactly the same.
3) Uninstalled Installed Office 2000 Pro.
4) Installed Office 2003 Pro. Errors remained exactly the same.
5) Uninstalled Office 2003 Pro and removed ALL MS Office-related files
6) Re-installed Office 2000 Pro. Now works much better, but 2nd set of problems (as mentioned in my original post) appeared

Something to that effect. Any advice?ok .... and the 20 to 30 seconds to do anything ...is that actual timed results or just a quess?

And the same machine ran the same programs before with no issues ...is that correct ?

dl65 What do you mean by dragging a column in excel?

all other applications work ok without any lag ?

Yes, no issues on anything else whatsoever.

Only MS Office 2000 pro has problems, at least as far as I can see over a few weeks. Everything else works as expected. (ie. no random slowdowns or the like)

Sorry, by dragging a column i mean holding LMB+drag to widen/narrow a column's width... it is just one example of numerous instances that seems to take forever for word/excel to process... Generally, opening/closing the program is ok... but other problems may be opening the 'Format-->Font' window, or 'File --> Save As' window

Could it possibly be a hardware problem? Quote

Did you get this software from a reputable source? Do you have a legitimate product key? Can you test that Office software on another computer?

Since you've installed Office 2000, uninstalled it, installed Office 2003 as a test, uninstalled it, then installed Office 2000 again, as I understand the scenario, I suggest you uninstall Office, DOWNLOAD and run CCleaner v1.34.407 - Basic, then reinstall Office. Be sure to run Windows and Applications scans with CCleaner, and also run the Issues scan. Repeat the Issues scan; it sometimes finds more stuff upon repeated scans. keyven......

You neglected to answer this question .
Re the dragging column thing ...... why don't you use the autofit selection and then there's no reason to have to do the drag thing.

dl65
dl65, he could use autofit but I wonder whether it would also lag. The dragging technique absolutely should happen without any delay whatsoever. It's a simple task, one that surely places very little demand on the processor or video card.
Yes , your correct ....... I was just curious about whether he had tried that ........ I wonder if there's any updates for office 2000 that hasn't been installed ........ It sounds more like a software issue ........ if nothing else on the machine lags........

Solve : WindowsXP Security Centre - stopped?

Answer»

I have just uninstalled NortonAV and replaced it with AVG. When I re-started I found tthat my WindowsXP Security Centre had stopped and I cannot get it to GO again despite following instructions (re-start again, open Control Panel, click Security Centre)

Can you help?Try downloading and running the RNAV tool from Symantec.com to completely REMOVE all of the Norton Antivirus program:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/pfdocs/2005033108162039Thanks. But already did this.It is possible the disabling of the Windows Security Center is due to an infection by a computer virus. Did you uninstall NAV because is was not FUNCTIONING properly? If so, this might also point to a viral infection of the system.

Try a couple of these free online virus scans:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=free+online+virus+scan&btnG=Google+Search

If your system is not infected, you might have to do a repair installation of Windows XP (which will REQUIRE a Microsoft Windows XP installation CD):

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

If all you have is a system restoration CD, you can use it to restore the system to the state it was in when it came out of the box. You might lose your DOCUMENTS, pictures and music, and might have to install some of your programs after the system restoration.

If you do not have a system restoration CD, you might be able to get one by contacting the manufacturer:

  • Dell support (USA): 888-560-8324
  • Gateway support (USA): 800-846-2301
  • HP & Compaq support (USA): 800-474-6836
  • IBM support (USA): 800-IBM-4YOU
Thanks for the message.

I have now sorted the problem by going to Start > Run > services.msc > scroll to "Security Centre" and make adjustments.

Solve : xms cache problem?

Answer»

when i boot my machine it says something about an xms cache problem and then it goes to the windows me startup screen (where you choose what mode to start windows in) and at the bottom it says to run scanreg but i can't even get into windows. are there any programs that boot from a disk and scan your registry? What OS? More information needed.i have: windows me

original gateway motherboard (from around 2000 i asume)

amd athlon 1 ghz processor

192 MB RAM

ati radeon video card

20 gb hard drive

Also, I recently was messing around with a dos boot disk and formatted my whole hard drive. fortunantly a guy i know ran a unformat program on my hard drive on his COMPUTER and all my data was recovered. then i was being stupid again and my computer would not go to windows and told me to run scanreg and there was something wrong with xms. this could've happened for any of these suspected reasons:

1. I was DELETING files on my c: drive that i think i didn't need (how stupid). i should've just hid them.

2. i installed dos 6 on another hard drive, and i put the same plug that is in my windows drive in the other one to get to dos to try to run some dos games from there.

then when i unplugged the cable from the drive to plug it into the windows drive again (i must have yanked on the cord wrong) the cable was tore apart.

then when i used windows again (not seeing the cord was ruined) and i tried opening the c: drive and all the folders and files were named weird stuff with weird symbols and error messages popped up.

then when i restarted my computer it said there was an xms problem and the windows me startup screen appeared and said to run scanreg to fix the problem but i can't even get to windows.

3. something to do with the unformatting.

so i'm wondering what is the best way to fix this? You could try a repair install of ME...boot with a ME bootdisk, rename win.com in the root directory to win.old and insert your ME CD and proceed with the install...my computer didn't come with the windows me install disks (or any disks). You will eventually need Windows installation disks....
i might be able to talk my dad into copying all of his data off his laptop onto my hard drive.

is there a bootable undelete or registry fixing program i could try though? Quote

...at the bottom it says to run scanreg but i can't even get into windows. ...

Choose the scanreg option. Windows Me will try to replace the corrupted Windows registry with a backup copy it previously made (it makes five backup copies, as Windows 98 SE does, i believe).
uh, what scanreg option? theres nothing like that. Quote
i might be able to talk my dad into copying all of his data off his laptop onto my hard drive.

What is that going to do?It would put everything on his hdd on mine (including windows xp)

never mind that though.

If I bought the windows XP upgrade version would it recognise that i have windows ME even if there is a registry problem, and then install XP?
If you have any pre-XP Windows operating system disks this is what I would do.

1. Boot to the XP upgrade
2. When it asks for the pre-XP operating disk...feed it
3. Continue on with a fresh install of XP

Simple / clean / to-the-point

Alan <>< my computer came with no disks. Quote

This will not work...

Solve : Mousepad not scrolling?

Answer»

Having had my Compaq Presario R3000 for close to two years, I have been using the function of the mousepad to scroll the whole time. Two days ago, I lost that function. Was running AV software especially, then. (AVG, AVAST, SPYWARE BLASTER). I know I selected this option from a screen before but I don't remember where. I know it's not in " mouse" under "control panel", but where? The place where I enabled the SCROLLING also provided the options of double tapping corners of my mousepad to do other functions like AUTO scroll, etc. Thanks for your help. You may need to reinstall the trackpoint/touchpad drivers - downloadable from your laptop manufacturer's website. Normally the settings are under Control Panel-->Mouse.
