Solve : Question After Installing SP2?

Answer»

I'm on Windoes XP Pro, and finally installed SP2 a few days ago, and noticed after that when I run AdAware, Ewido, and Super Anti-Spyware they dont find ANY spyware at all, before when I ran these programs there would always be at least 4-5 of general spyware, even with my firewall, ect, Ewido in particular would always find about 10 items, now nothing, is it possible when I installed SP2 it messed with these programs and I would have to reinstall them? I did notice after installing SP2 that a few programs were messed up and had to be reinstalled, like Microsoft Office, think that might have happened here? I understand SP2 protects against Spyware better, but it seems odd to me they would find NOTHING every time I run them, any thoughts?Did you check to see if the programs were properly configured?Configured in what sense? These programs pretty much run themselves....As in are they doing a full scan, are all the folders tagged, etc..Yeah, I always run them in full scan mode, takes a LONG time but I'm kinda paranoid about spyware and stuff on my computers...If you are running scans regularly and they are not turning up anything wrong and you are worried chances are you are paranoid...
Maybe your right, I still think its strange how I went from 5-10 infections every scan to zero though...fullbug, keep in MIND that the major benefit of SP2 is better security. To quote Top 10 Reasons to Deploy Windows XP Service Pack 2: "Windows XP SP2 is, first and foremost, about helping you stay secure." In other words, you should EXPECT to see less frequent finding of adware/spyware when you run your adware/spyware programs.Thanx for the info, I guess I was worried over nothing.... You should be worried if you're still using INTERNET Explorer, though. No way, I use Avant and Firefox...Good, good. How about Thunderbird? I have never checked out Thunderbird, pretty happy with Avant though, they have a new feature when you can upload your bookmarks from any computer, thats a feature I havent seen anywhere else yet....Thunderbird is an E-mail client, though. Isn't Avant a browser?

I like EVOLUTION as well, which is a free Linux (Ubuntu) E-mail client.Yeah, Avant is a browser, I thought thats what you were talking about, are you saying using something like Yahoo E-mail can cause problems?

Solve : Screenshot with pointer?

Answer»

How can I set Windows XP SP2 to take a screenshot that includes the mouse pointer? My experience is that the pointer is excluded...Maybe one of these freeware programs will do it: http://www.nonags.com/nonags/grcapt.html. I haven't actually used them, so I don't KNOW whether any of them will do what you want. But, I would THINK there must be one or more that will do that.Hi there
sorry cant answer you but I have had to do loads of manuals in the PAST, if that's what it's for I just paste into word & insert an arrow from drawing tools onto image, works for me:-)

Solve : Ready to stab out an eye?

Answer»

I have been trying to download service pack 2 for about 3 hrs now. Someone help! Everytime it begins installation I get the message:

The file "c:\windows\system32\ftp.exe is open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and then click RETRY.

There are no other programs open when this happens. This happens online, and when I try to use the disc as well. When I checked the technical info that is to be sent to MICROSOFT it says that the FOLLOWING file will be sent with the error report:

c:\windows\temp\WAT4.tmp

Holy moly! What does that mean? I'm just a regular gal! Can't deal with this...thanks for any input. So, you've tried to download it from the INTERNET, right? I'll mention two other options for getting it. ONE is to Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD. The other, ask someone to download SP2 and burn it to a CD for you. Here's the download link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=enRemove the file WAT4.tmp, it's only a temp file.

Better still...
CLEANUP
Ccleaner
(During install, uncheck the Yahoo Toolbar option)
(After install, set Options>Advanced> 'Uncheck the 48 hour BOX')

Then run the cleaner & also scan for issues.

Have you checked your computer recently?
Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Online Malware Scan
http://www.ewido.net/en/Thanks to both of you. I do indeed have the disc and have tried to download SP2 with the disk and from the Update Website.

I don't think I have a Yahoo toolbar and I didn't see an option to install it while trying to download SP2. Also, I clean up the computer frequently. You know, I've been trying to download SP2 for at least a year now and it is ALWAYS that same message about an application using that particular file.

Any other ideas? Thanks!I will try to delete the file as you suggested. So far I can't find it. When I go to Explore and I click on the "WINDOWS" folder, it's empty. Maybe it has hidden files, but I don't know how to "unhide them." The properties in the WINDOWS folder say "READ ONLY"... thanks though. ILL try to figure that out...Ciao for now.

Solve : No File Manager - XP?

Answer»

Hi Everyone

Remember back on 98/NT on file manager you could see who had a particular file open on a network by going into Properties and Open By, and there was also an option to close selected users or all users who had the file open.

Question is, does anyone know a way this can be done on XP, there is no file manager so i guess that way is out the window, so it's to see if anyone knows of any free programs that do this or any other way using existing windows xp features.

Many Thanks

You could try enter "my COMPUTER" and on "TOOLS" tab u'll see "map network driver" or something like that, try it...No Joy unfortunatley, i can see the server and the files on it, i'm just trying to find a way to kick people off certain filesohh... Solve : Installation setup cannot read files.?

Answer»

I am having an installation issue with windows XP hom edition

I am trying to do a clean install on my laptop, I boot from the OS Cd ROM, and let the setup information load, then I accept the terms of the EULA by pressing F8,

but when the system trys to install XP about 1 or 2% into the load, I get a message that says that setup cannot read "filename"

I am using a Dell Inspiron 9300 with a 100 GB HD and a DVD RW/CDRW

I have done hardware diagnostics and both PASS.

My CD is clean and without scratches or dirt.

The filenames that have appeared so far include but are not limited to: ftdisk.sys
                                                                                                     cdaudio.sys
                                                                                                     shruti.ttf
                                                                                                     couri.ttf
                                                                                                     palab.ttf
                                                                                                     cinemst2.sys
                                                                                                     cpqdap01.sys
is there a way to boot from a usb device? I saved a copy of my boot cdrom on a partition of my western digital 500 gb MYBOOK external usb hard drive.Verify that the FOLLOWING hardware is intact by using diagnostic software or inspecting it with the bare eye

  • RAM
  • HDD
  • Windows XP installation CD-ROM
  • DVD/CD-ROM reader/writer
It is all intact and has all passed diagnostic tests. What have you used to verify the integrity of your RAM/HDD?

Could the laptop be overheating? Are all fans functioning?

Is it an original Windows XP CD?I am currently running chkdsk /r in the recovery console just incase there is SOMETHING the diagnostic tool missed.it's cool as a cucumber fans are opeating fine, the room is 70 degrees , and I have used the diagnostic utility included on the original certified microsoft xp recovery cd rom.Like I said in my private message, use other diagnostic tools.Ok, I have used Check it Diagnostics that was included with Norton...still says all the hardware is hummin like it should...all tests pass. still every time I try to load the OS i get stuck at "setup cannot read "ftdisk.sys"" I am begining to get frustrated.Did you also test the RAM with the utility I linked you to?

I never said to use Norton, I said use the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic software.Um I thought you said "use OTHER diagnostic tools", and I was just saying I did use other diadnostic tools, now I have used both your link...the RAM seems fine, and I downloaded a utility from Dell that is supposed to be from the HDD manufacturer. No Dice, Everything CHECKS OK from a TESTING standpoint, the only test failed is the one where I try to load windows. Now I feel compelled to find a solution, I have too much time invested to back off now.Have you got an external CD/DVD-ROM drive that you can use? You could easily build yourself one if you had a conversion kit and an existing IDE 5.25" CD-/DVDROM drive.I have an external CD RW Drive, but it is usb2, and my laptop won't boot from a USB connection I have tried to boot off my Western Digital external HDD that has a copy of my Microsoft XP OS CD Rom on it. Booting from USB isnt an option unless someone knows a workaround. As far as fabricationg a NON USB external cd drive, I dont have the tools, equipment ,supplies, technical savy, or desire to build one. I suppose if all I am needing to do is read off a drive to instal my OS, I can pick up just a good ol' fashioned CD ROM 'read only' new drive for little of nothing that would fit the port on my Inspiron, and try booting from that. That way if my DVD CD Drive IS FUBAR, I will know, I will be able to load XP and then shell out the Clams to replace the DVD RW. Does that sound viable ?It's a guessing game, but if you're certain all the other hardware is intact.. Perhaps you can borrow one from someone?I will give it a shot, likely to be a couple days before I get a chance to try though, I am back on duty tonight for the next 5 days. will let you know when I have another day off to work on this.

Solve : Drive Names?

Answer»

Will somebody please tell me how to CHANGE THE DRIVE NAMES for Win98se?You can't unless you reformat them.Partition Magic might be able to.Asking, do you mean the letter identifying the drive or the name, i.e. label, for it? You can change the drive name by opening My Computer, right click on the drive and select Properties, and change the "Label".Hi, Soybean,
I want to change the name of the drive before the drive letter. Say, for instance, I want to
CHANGE
"Removable Drive (D)"
TO
"'iPod (D)".

Changing the "Label" name won't work!If you feel comfortable making changes to the Registry, this might be the solution: Change Drive Name and Icon. I have not tried this; I found it in a Google search.Open the Control Panel...right click the drive....select rename.....have FUN !

I am GOING to try out the suggestions and return with the result(s) later on. So, keep in touch. In Windows 2000 you can change the drive names through the My Computer like you can with files.

Solve : check disk screen color?

Answer»

when i turned on my computer this MORNING, the checkdisk screen color suddenly changed, instead of the blue screen color, its SOMETHING like violet like now. and then when i played my fav game(warcraft), it becomes garbled after 10 min or so. i tried to uninstall my video driver(latest from nvidia.com) and then reinstall it but it still is the same.

any suggestions?

thanks. Are all the other colors correct / do you have another monitor you can try on this computer / does it do it all the time?

Alan <>< ive tried another pc on my monitor and its working fine. the problem is with my pc, and yes, it does this every time. Quote

Another monitor worked on your PC without changing problems?

Then it's your monitor. Try DEGAUSSING it.you didn't understand.. i said i tried another pc on my monitor, that means someone else's pc on my monitor not my pc on another monitor
well, instead of take your monitor to another computer just try change the graphic card, im pretty sure that will solve your problem. So you took your monitor to another computer and the monitor was ok, right?

Do you have any other electircal DEVICE NEAR the computer? Stereo / TV / atomic devices?

thx in advWe can't tell that from a piece of text.

Try updating every driver on your system:

  • Videocard
  • chipset
  • IDE driver (If you have an Nvidia chipset)
  • soundcard driver
  • NIC driver
  • processor driver (AMD Cool 'n Quiet, for example)
hehe lol.
thank you for quick answer, well, im glad its not an hardware problem becouse i just got a new computer and its give me this messege everytime computer starts.

u dont think i should take it to the store for them to replace the graphic card or something? im asking again becouse when i got the computer they said they had problem with the graphic card and that they replace it and now its good.
im not so sure they replace it...

what do u think ?

by the way, all my drivers is update. I used the program driverguide toolkit to check for update and offcorse, windows update.

im guessing this is o.k...
Ehm, I think you can safely ignore Quatroking's comment.

i guess i will return it to them but im pretty sure they will bring it back with the same problem, and they will probbley leave the computer at store for about 2-3 weeks :-) ffs... so anyway, ILL take it to the store so they will repair it. but after i bring it back from the store i will probebley format and install everything from BEGINING, is there anything i should'nt do ? :-) im asking for real becouse its a new computer so maybe i did something that couse it."Is there anything i shouldn't do?"

Hah, no, but seriously I can tell you what you should do:

  • Reinstall Windows XP and the drivers yourself (Use only the OEM drivers, if you do not know wheter or not you are using the proper drivers; ask US.) unless this voids your warranty, in which case you should let the computer store do it.
  • Back up all your important system data before reinstalling Windows.

Solve : Macromedia Flash player 8?

And for the destination, it set to: C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\F...

So I click install - and it does a short 1 sec install and disappears into thin AIR, it does nothing more. So I go to the directory where its supposedly at - and the only file there is this: ("NPSWF32.dll 8.0.24.0 Shockwave Flash 8.0 r24")

And thats the only file it shows.

I don't want to install Adobe, but just can't understand what the issue is, because it puts the folders in my computer, but I visit a flash content site and I get a prompt TELLING me to install Adobe.

I have 2 SITES in which both have the same issues when I try to download the flash player.

Solve : FILE BACKUP AND TRANSFER SOFTWARE - BEST...!!!?

Answer»

FILE BACKUP AND TRANSFER SOFTWARE - BEST...!!!

Hi everyone...!!!

WHICH IS THE BEST SOFTWARE (PREFERABLY FREEWARE) CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR FILE BACK UP AND TRANSFER...? (NOT SYSTEM CLONING but only data/file backup and transfer)

Scenario:

I am having one Hard Disk of say 200 GB with three PARTITIONS 20 GB; 40GB; and 140 GB Balance.

There is a huge amount of valuable data (only) of somehwhat say 70 GB on 3rd partition of 140 GB.

I want to move (transfer - not back up) this 70 GB of voluminous data from this 3rd partition to another Hard disk of 160 GB where there is already data of 30 GB.

I dont want to do CUT - PASTE...(bcz long file names are not copied and if there is a problem in copying at any stage the entire copying procedure stops in between and then its diffuclt to track in thousands of folders and files what has been copied and what not)

I cannot clone as in that case destination data of 30 GB will be lost...whereas my goal is to add 70 GB of data from partition 3 of hard disk one to already existing 30 GB data of hard disk 2...without destroying data in hard disk 2 (which would happen in cloning or image recovery)

Request:

Can i request all OF U TO PLZ SUGGEST ME Some way / idea / software / trick/ mechanism so that i can freely move large amount of data - be it transfer or copying from one partition to another partition of same hard disk or another hard disk....

WHICH IS THE BEST SOFTWARE (PREFERABLY FREEWARE) CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR FILE BACK UP AND TRANSFER...? (NOT SYSTEM CLONING but only data/file backup and transfer)

I hope I have been able to explain my situation clearly and hence would urge plz plz to put forward valuable suggestions and replies....

Thanks and Best Regards

What's your OS? Please explain the comment on long file names. Are both hard drives in the same computer? If so, then the same OS you were running when you created these files is the OS that would be doing the CUT and PASTE. So, why the problem when the long file names?

If you encounted problems USING CUT and PASTE, why not break the files down into smaller batches? And, I think you should definitely use COPY, not CUT.

Have TRIED using the Windows Backup UTILITY? I see no reason that would not work for this purpose. Do you any CD/DVD burning software installed, such as Nero or Roxio?
Try SyncBack for your needs...incremental backups; file comparison between drives/partitions; automated scheduling etc...

What program ? ?

Some have a built in un-installer but without knowing well....

There are proper ways of doing this so post back with what we thrive on...infoGeneral advice that would apply is to simply remove the program and run a registry cleaner afterwards. However, if the program didn't come with an uninstaller, it probably didn't create any registry entries either. If you installed the program from a CD, just run the setup program from the CD again. It will ask if you want to remove the program. When you say search for and delete the exe file, do you mean to simply delete it from the All Programs Folder?

I am using Windows XP Home. The program itself is called ONLINE Gold Finder. It creates a list of topics being searched for online according to criteria that I put into it. The copy I have on my computer no longer WORKS because the hosting compnay for the software changed IP addresses or something like that. I downloaded an updated version that is supposed to work with the new IP address, but it won't let me install it until I remove the old one. The maker of the software said it should show in the Add/Remove Programs list and he doesn't know why it's not there. The list of programs from the Start Menu is essentially just a list of shortcuts to the programs in "C:\Program FILES." So you would have to delete the .EXE file in addition to deleting the "All Programs" LISTING of it.

I downloaded an updated version that is supposed to work with the new IP address, but it won't let me install it until I remove the old one.

The new version know the program is there, so Windows should too. Maybe it is just named something else in the "Remove Programs" window?

Don't delete anything yet. I'm sure someone else will have some advice.

Solve : Setting rules on Outlook 2002?

Answer»

I desperately need SOMEONE's help!! I have spent ages trying to set up rules so they auto deliver emails back but it doesnt seem to be fool proof. At the moment I have set up templates for each email i wish to send. They are all working so that part is ok.
The THING which is bothering me is the fact that the keywords to search for do not say "AND" it keeps saying "OR" - i desperately need it to say AND because i wish to include the title of something i am selling AND paypal payment notification. At the moment when someone just enquires about the title it is sending them the actual product because it says OR.

Any suggestions??

Cheers
KatieI'm not entirely sure , but if you put the 2 word's inside inverted commas it might take it as a single string for example "Beans Soy" or you could try the & symbol IE: Beans & soyI just checked the rules Wizard, if you add the words as a single entry it should treat them as a single entry.

in this case you should add the words in the combinations you expect them to come in in.I am adding them as the combination in which they come in. For example I am doing:

Search inside title and body for:

"negative calorie diet EBOOK" or
"Notification of Instant payment received"

ok

The problem is, when someone just says

" HI, I wonder if you can tell me about the negative calorie diet ebook"

Then people get sent the item - but they have not paid for it!! How do i get the OR bit to CHANGE to AND because its just not working?
Would i need to say search for "negative calorie diet ebook notification of instant payment received" ?

Katiein that case i don't think you need better rules in out look, but a better Business Model.

You need to set up some thing a Little more complicated. but also simple.

how about when you confirm some one has payed , you send them an Email with one of 100 random numbers in it, then they reply with the number in the subject title. and then you out look checks the Email title to see if it one of the 100 numbers and then sends the E-Bookmmmm good idea....

Now, i wanted to deliver my ebooks instantly by picking up the notification of instant payment email from paypal but i have many different products selling, so how would i set up the initial responder with the individual number in it specifically for each ebook?

SORRY to sound ignorant here......

KatieHow a bout a 2 part number, IE, 100-54486468 Check the first part to see what book they want and use the second part as auth-code.

Solve : "O" file attribute in Windows XP?

Answer»

Does anyone know what the "O" file attribute is? This attribute started appearing on the file servers at work recently. A little black symbol is also attached to the file's icon.

Files scheduled for offline SYNCHRONISATION, perhaps? Where are you seeing this 'O' attribute? It shows up in the ATTRIBUTES column in Windows Explorer ALONG with A H S R if they are set.Compressed? Encrypted? (Can you tell I'm guessing?!)Shouldn't your network administrator be able to tell you what it is?The IS dept in my company is very very diffidult to deal with. I have a simple small application to install on an application server, no custom stuff, straight out of the box. I installed it on a stand alone PC in about 10 minutes. I am still trying to get it installed on a server three months later. They are too *censored* retentive to answer a question like this and I am not going to waste my time with them. I figure I will have better luck with the friendly people on this forum.I don't think any of us have seen it before, we'd need to be directly behind the PC to figure out what it is from.

Could you give us a name or just a file name that is related to it? Anything would be useful..

Also mention any security software and device drivers you may have installed that could have caused this.It doesn't seem to be related to any particular file type. I don't know what software or drivers are installed, this is a file server of which I have very few privileges. The servers on my company's network are very secure. I had a vendor rep come in to service our plotter one time and he made the comment: "This is the tightest network I have ever encountered." I can't even view the registry on any server (access denied). I suspect this attribute is related to new software on the file servers that will enable anyone to retreive a file or folder from backup up to three days prior without having to submit a request to retrieve from backup. The more I think about, the attribute started appearing around the same time the new backup retrieval software APPEARED. By the way, here is a screenshot of where anyone can retrieve a backup. It is PART of the Properties dialog box of a file or folder.

Perhaps you could E-mail the company behind your back-up software and ask them if it is related? It seems to me that Rob Pomeroy was pretty close. Quote

The more I think about, the attribute started appearing around the same time the new backup retrieval software appeared.
Is this perhaps an IBM server runnnig Unix? The is most likely marked "for output", though the O attribute can serve other purposes. If the IT dudes remove the attribute or it gets automatically archived after a period of time, you will no longer be able to retrieve the file.

Solve : Dumb enough to need some advice on XP install?

Answer»

Dummy updated to XP SP2, held F5 down by mistake instead of F8 for safe mode, and can't get desktop screen to open at all. Any body have any ideas? Older Dell Dimension 2350 (P4 700 gig processor, I think) with 256meg of ram and 30gig HD. Originally had XP SP1 home edition and I installed a newer XP SP 2 over that. Had some resolution issues and wanted to run in safe mode while testing. Not sure i understand completely.
Did the XP install finish ? ?
Have you tried to re-boot ? ?

Start the machine up with the XP CD in and see what happens.

patio. 8-)You have overwritten Windows XP SP1 with a copy of Windows XP SP 2?

Note how I say Windows XP SP2 and not just SP2..

You should really be more specific in the near future.I installed a newer version (new DISK) of Windows XP Service Pack 2 over my older version (came with the computer SEVERAL years ago) of Windows XP Service Pack 1.

To patio: yes, the installation was complete, but with resolution PROBLEMS. Yes, I tried rebooting several times with no success. I also tried starting up with the installation disk in place but with no success.

I don't fully understand the function of the F5 key but did read somewhere that holding it down can create a "frozen key" problem, but I dond't have a clue how to rectify that.A REBOOT should rectify the wrong key issue...

Have you tried re-installing your vid card drivers ? ?

So you basically had two copies of Windows XP, one with SP1 and one with SP2 and you put in the disk to overwrite Windows XP SP1 with Windows XP SP2 whilst outside Windows?

Or did you have an SP2 upgrade that you installed whilst you were in Windows XP SP1?

If you don't mind losing your data, just format and start again. To Neil: I believe that installing XP over a previous version of XP, or windows 98 or 95 reformats the hard drive anyway. I would be happy to try reinstalling either of my versions of XP but no matter what I do, I can't get a screen display to APPEAR in order to go through the process. When reinstalling, which you should do, choose to format the disk, NOT to keep the existing file structure. You will then need to reinstall the correct drivers, all available at the Dell site.

Solve : No hyperlink from email?

Answer»

I'll make my problem as simple as I can:
My email programs (Outlook Express and Outlook) and any browser I use work perfectly. What doesn't work and makes me crazy is when I click on a hyperlink in an email to go to the internet, it takes me here:
Desktop>My Computer>Local Disk>Documents and Settings>Owner. Conversely, if I click on a link in an email to an email address , it works perfectly.

To get to the net, I have to copy and paste...... and as you know, that doesn’t always work, depending on how the addy is embedded. I have scanned for viruses, spyware, etc. and also reloaded Outlook Express. I am using Windows XP home with SP2, have 1 GB ram and a fast processor. This is a new problem, it did work. :-?
Posting your problem more than once does not speed up the REPLY process.

Be patient, someone will be along SHORTLY...I deleted the others.

Can you do a system restore to a point before this began? Have you run all of your scans in safe mode with system restore turned off? This may have been caused by one of the Outlook Express security updates.

Personally, I'd ditch OE and use >Thunderbird< instead. That did it; Thunderbird is now my new email program. Although I am fairly computer literate, I hadn't thought of anything but Outlook Express and Outlook. I had done a system restore and scanned the computer for viruses and spyware in safe mode, thank you. Seems as though the problem is fixed. And to think that I was READY to stick in another hard drive and another OS. Solve : Preference on typing a SquareRoot into an equation?

Answer»

If you were using a small, text-based calculator that looked rather DOS-like, it only accepted input through the keyboard, and you wanted to add the Square Root symbol, would you rather type SQR into the equation, or press [Ctrl]+[R] to add the Square Root symbol?
Please vote, people. I know it is an almost pointless poll, but I am making a calculator! I know a trick with the calculator that can make your PC stall!

I'd like to type SQR, by the way. I think.I'd like you to redesign my keyboard so that there's a square root symbol on it.Does your calculator have a power feature? A square root is equivalent to a half power. That is 4 ^ 0.5 = 2It does use "^" for exponents, but I think Square Roots are so common, they deserve their own keyboard entry method.

It's a doddle in PROLOG...

I didn't vote because I would almost never use a text-mode calculator. And for the very rare occasions when I do, I use bc on Linux. And I have no idea what the function is for SQRT (although ^.5 would probably do it).

In short, I would look in the manual every time, so it wouldn't make any difference whether I had to type SQRT, hit Ctrl-R or dance the sailor's hornpipe dressed only in a pink feather BOA whilst waggling my ears and reciting the entire works of Shakespeare backwards. I'd just look in the manual and do what it TOLD me. In short, I would look in the manual every time.

It's not necessarily just for the Square Root. For the Cosine, it would be "COS(" or [Ctrl]-[C]. Since many functions would use a similiar format, you shouldn't need to look at the help more than once. Then it depends wheather you like to press [Ctrl] or not.

No, not yours. Unless you build in a scientific feature with the n! function.

Mine has that. It can return 200! (although it is not fully accurate with such large numbers). But if you type 999999999999! it won't freeze!! The variable that loops to solve this recursively is a 16-bit integer, so it at most loops to about 32,000. It can do that in less than a second, and just exits the loop with an error. It works and I hadn't even thought about that.

QBasic has a fast built-in Square Root function, which is one reason I think my calculator should. Quote

No, I question whether that's the right sequence, because offhand I can't remember whether bc uses RPN (reverse Polish notation, in case anyone's wondering).

So touchy!

Solve : Crash at boot screen?

Answer»

Hello,
Asus p5gdc mobo
Pentium 4 3.4
Ati GRAPHICS (sorry, helping a friend - not sure)

About choosing a forum... I thought this might concern both windows and DOS

The system has xp installed, just formatted. The pc has been crashing (screen just freezes - no error message OR rebooting) after about 5 minutes of playing a game. This has just happened but it wont reboot this time. It freezes at the boot screen (picture of mobo etc). The first time i had an error message saying "3RD master not detected" but it hasnt hapened since. Tried getting into BIOS but its freezing before i can.

To GIVE this some history,
Supposedly this has been happening for a while but no damage has ever been done to the hardware from it.
The crashing when running a game would lead me to believe that that its over-heating...maybe? i checked the the graphics fan is working which it is. Then checked the CPU temp which was around 70 just after crash. I should have checked the Graphics card temp but i ... didnt really know how so i left it for the time being... but i guess this is another problem considering im not even able to boot into windows, thought it might shed some light on the problem for someone who knows a lot more about this than me.

Thanks in advance for any help!Ok, i have changed from a wireless keyboard to PSP and its letting me press delete in order to enter BIOS: im not sure how to set up the third IDE Master though. The 1st and second are set to cd DRIVES though.Make sure all FANS and heatsinks are operating normally.

Test HDD and RAM using diagnostic software.

Solve : A question about upgrading OS?

Answer»

I read this many times on this forum and it got me wondering. Wondering because it happened to me. Many POSTERS have said that it's better to do a format before doing an upgrade. What happens if you don't have the original OS. Then you out of luck.Yep, you out of luck, if you wanted to use an upgrade CD instead of full version.

Otherwise, you could try the upgrade without formatting so that you don't need the CD for the older OS.Unless you know a NICE friend who'll let you borrow his CD. It happened to me. I did a clean format and when I tried to install the upgrade I was warned that I would need an original Windows product. Luckily, I found a set of Windows 3.0 disks and was able to complete the upgrade using them. I thing there is a large difference in PRICE between an upgrade and a full version.Yep. M$ wants a fair amount of $ (like they really need it).

I always keep a copy of Windows 98 around in case I have a situation come up where a client doesn't have their original cd so I can use their upgrade software.

Alan <>< I recently upgraded Windows 98SE to Windows XP on my laptop and it WORKS quite well, I used to upgrade before but I still prefer a reformat because I don't exactly know what Windows XP upgrades or leaves behind..I believe it prompts you for a prior version of Windows...if on a formatted drive all is needed is to insert the Win98 CD at the prompt and the install continues.

patio. 8-)My point is that before advising a poster to do a clean format, they should be advised to make sure they have a full version of their OS because they're CERTAINLY going to need it.It is indeed something to keep in mind.

However, the chances of someone only having an upgrade version of Windows XP and no pre-Windows 2000 or post Windows-98 installation CD are rather slim.

Did you completely reformat the HDD before installing Windows?

You should use diagnostic software from the HDD manufacturer to verify the HDD's status.Contact Microsoft support and have em send you restore discs. Not too hard and they will only cost you about 20$ including shipping i think. 8-)ok yes i reformated the drive still same thing so i GUESSING that one if not more of the hardware is fried i dunno this is makeing me mad but thanks for the help guysWhat type of monitor do you have? You can test the hard drives using diagnostic software that you can obtain at the manufacturers website.

Solve : blue screen mayhem!?

Answer»

pretty much everytime i GO to do something that may take the slightest amount of effort for the computer, it will come up with a blue screen. this may include watching a movie, dvd, running a few programs or even installing programs (not good...)
the error code it comes up with is:

STOP: 0X000000C4 (0X00000033 0X00000002 0XED6D0090 0X00000000)

CLEDX.SYS - ADDRESS ED6D0090 BASE AT ED6C9000, DATESTAMP 427FA729

im not sure of the type of RAM i have, but i know there is 504MB of it. i have a AMD Athlon XP 1600+ 1.40GHz processor (i dont know if it makes any difference) and i have windows XP Home EDITION 2002 service pack 2 installed (again, i dont know if it makes a difference)
i hope this is enough to go off. but i really hope some one can help me and tell me what the problem might be.

504MB

That is not the total amount of RAM, the remaining RAM is most likely shared with the videocard.

You should test the RAM by using This(Click) program which creates a bootable diskette.

You should test the rest of your system by using Prime95(Click) (Unverified, I use Winstress but that isn't free.) which should test nearly EVERY component in your system. Runs under Windows.

And test your Hard Disk Drive using the MANUFACTURERS diagnostic software.

Also make certain you have the latest drivers installed and that your BIOS is properly configured.
Follow Raptors advice...then check this out:

Solve : Booting XP?

Answer»

I turned on my computer and received a message toside.sys not file. setup failed. I also receive an error about a missing hal.dll file, please reinstall. How to I boot to windows? I don't have a XP cd, because Compaq/HP didn't give one with the system. I was told by a tech to go to a repair shop and pay to have my data put on cd. I called a few places and it's pretty expensive.

Please help. The first error you listed makes no sense whatsoever.

There is a procedure for fixing the hal.dll file.
Travel to the link below, read the instructions very carefully (i'd print them out for future use ), and have your WinXP CD handy...

Good Luck.

patio. 8-)I think you forgot the link, Patio. I think... that Compaq & HP have a partition that has the files to reinstall without cd's. In fact I know it because I just did it to a clients computer last week.

When the system boots check the screen and look for something that might point you to System Recovery, like using the F12, F10, F2.

It will either be a destructive or non-destructive restore. I think that whe I did the restore last week it DID NOT remove everything, just reinstalled the operating system and left all the other files/folders along.

patio. 8-)when I do the bootcfg/rebuild, it says nothing exists. When I do check disk it tells me failed to SUCCESSFULLY scan DISKS for window installations. Error may be caused by corrupt file system.

I don't have the windows xp cd. I have a compaq presario, which only has the Recovery Tools cd, and 2 recovery disks.

I googled about the toside.sys error. It says Error Message:
The following file is corrupted: toside.sys
Translation:
One of the RAM modules on your computer is corrupted or won’t work with your computer correctly.

Microsoft's websiste has: When you try to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM, you may receive the following error message:

CAUSE
This issue may occur if one or more of the random access memory (RAM) modules that are installed in your computer is damaged or if the RAM configuration is incompatible.
RESOLUTION
To TROUBLESHOOT and resolve this issue, remove the memory modules that are installed in your computer, but leave enough RAM to start your computer and run Windows, and then restart your computer.

This message occurs on the first screen that says press f1 for setup.

I am trying to recover my data, important financial papers, and pictures. I have not installed any memory. I do not have a windows xp cd. It was a pre-installed system. You should test the RAM using diagnostic software that can be found here(click).

It requires one bootable diskette.

Back-up your files by mounting the current HDD in another Windows XP PC (in case of NTFS file system) as a slave.Sorry, I don't have another windows xp computer. I can't use a diskette, because my computer doesn't have a floppy drive. It only has places for memory card readers, flash drives, etc.

When I went through the previous steps , and it asks which NUMBER you want to choose: It says 1: c\i386, 2 C:\miniNT, and 3. H:\windows. On C drive it has partitions 1 Fat 32, and on H drive it has partition 2 NTFS.

I don't know what any of this stuff means.

Is it possible to reinstall windows, and then download recovery data PROGRAMS to get my data back? If so, How do I reinstall windows with a compaq computer that was preinstalled? Also concerning the toside.sys. I found on another site that malware may camaflauge themselves as toside.sys and it is located in the c\windows or c\windows\system32 directory. Quote

First is there a difference between taskbar & toolbar? The one Im talking about today is at the bottom of my computer screen.

I run McAfee virus scans, Spybot Search & Destroy and Spysweeper once a week. And I have had no virus's or problems. My Temp. Internet files are emptied about every other day. And cookies maybe a couple times a month.

For about three weeks now Ive been having this problem. While online and surfing I open site pages and they open fine (well maybe slower than usual LOL) and in the taskbar it also shows the page Im on. That I know it is supposed to happen. When I do more than one page I minimize.

So Im online and I start closing pages. Xing them out/closed. BUT A LOT of the time after I have closed the page it stays in the taskbar. I click on it and nothing happens, it doesnt open again. Because Ive already closed it. So I have to RIGHT click my mouse to close it. BUT that doesnt work either. So I have to open my Task Manager and FINALLY close it that way. And then an error report is sent, something about the failing to close. I forget.

I have no idea what to do about this. Can anyone help me? Please?

Thanks

John
Are all your SCANNERS up to date?

The taskbar is the bar on the right of the Windows start button.
Do you have any toolbars (Such as Google search, Yahoo search, etc) installed in Internet Explorer?

Why are you using Internet Explorer? Switch to Firefox and get tabbed browsing..

Try using Crap Cleaner(Click) to clean the registry and RESET your Internet Explorer advanced settings to their default status. Quote

Hi Raptor, ok when you say scanners do you mean my drivers? How do I check that?

YES I have a Google toolbar and a Yahoo toolbar. I forgot to mention I use Ccleaner almost daily.

How do I reset my IE settings to default?

And I was planning on trying Firefox. Thanks. Quote

No, I mean your anti-virus and spyware scanners (McAfee, Adaware and Spybot S&D) Your drivers should be up to date as well, but they are not related to this problem so you can let them rest for now.

Try uninstalling both toolbars to see if that makes the problem go away, you can always reinstall them later on but I advise against doing so. Toolbars tend to make browsers unstable.

You can reset your IE settings to default by taking the following steps:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced

Clean your cache, cookies and history as well.

Once again, I am completely baffled by a WINDOWS error message:

It can't find an error... so it gives me an error to tell me... AUGH! *brain EXPLODES* Since errors are an important feature in Windows, not having any presents a serious problem to your system. What were you doing when this message appeared? It does not say no error FOUND; it says "No such error found". So, it seems to be referring to a certain type of error that was not found. Again, what did you do that caused this message to appear?

The message obviously seems contradictory, SAYING "No such error found", but then saying "Error code: flashNotInstalled". That doesn't even look like a windows error box, are you sure?

when I open Word, I get a Windows Installer dialogue box saying - The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other removable disk that is not available.Insert Norton Antivirus 2006 disk & click ok(previously I had problems with Norton and uninstalled it (eventualy)even tho' it didn't run out untill Jan07,and previous to that Norton would kick in to do a virus check on Word before I opened it) to cut a long story shortish, I click on cancel and I get a Preparing to install dialogue box for about 2 /3 secs. Then I get the Windows Installer dialogue box again saying.....what it said before, so I press cancel again and again I get Preparing to Install etc. etc.
This goes on 3/4/5 or even 6 times before eventually Word opens, now this is a pain at the best of times but as I often open Word and Word docs. a number of times this is doing my head in, I think( don't really know ) that Word is asking the non existent Norton Antivirus to check word before opening, Question is ( if I'm right, and I wouldn't bet on that ) How do I tell Word not to ask for an Antivirus check before opening ( and if I'm wrong , what else do I do )

Solve : I am having trouble deleting dllhost.exe!?

Answer»

I connected to the Internet through the MetroFi-Free wireless network (Cupertino, CA), and, according to the Windows timestamp, dllhost.exe was created on my computer just a few minutes later, or maybe even instantly. I found it in the list of processes in the Windows Task Manager after noticing some programs started closing 1-3 seconds after I opened them (including the NTVDM DOS emulator).

These programs were placed on my PC (Windows 2000) without my knowledge of them:

(The "Modified" dates are the same as the "Created Dates")

(If you cannot see the full image above with the file sizes and times, it is here:
http://www.geocities.com/tzmne/restricted/badprogs.gif)

I found http://www.pchell.com/virus/welchia.shtml, which correctly identified the dllhost.exe I have. I was able to stop dllhost.exe as mentioned in Step 2, but I cannot do Step 3. Everytime I open REGEDIT, it closes almost instantly. I THINK this is because of dllhost.exe.
So, I think I will have to do more than simply delete these NEW programs. How can I continue without being able to run REGEDIT?
Thank You. I believe if you do find a way to turn those services off you will no longer have access to the internet...they are being used for your connection.

patio. 8-)I have to delete them. They cause the DOS emulator to crash every 1-3 seconds, and that is one of the main things I do on my computer. I was just trying MetroFi-Free for a day, but not that I am home, I do not need or want anything to do with it. Obviously my current WIFI connection does not need these things (which were defined as worms) because they were just created yesturday. I just want my laptop to be fully functioning again! Are you certain they cause your emulator to crash?

Quote

  Recommendation for dllhost.exe:
Should not be disabled, required for essential applications to work properly.

SourceDo you have any spyware removal tools installed on your computer? Which ones? Have you run them since this problem started? Ever use CCleaner? If not, might be a good idea to get it. Be sure to run the Issues scan. When prompted to back up your registry before making the changes recommended by the scan, do so.

By the way, your avatar is 69,384 bytes. By comparison, the ones used by the other three posters so far is this thread, including me, are less than 2,000 bytes. Here's one for your that's less than 2Kbytes:

Use it, if you like, but please move it to your own image hosting location. The version of dllhost.exe I have is a worm of the same name as a legitamate program. That's what it says at the link in my first post.

I don't have any spyware/virus removers. I could try that, but can I fix this without getting any other programs?
If that works, it would remove all the new evil programs, and then I could run "the patches for the DCOM RPC Exploit or WebDAV exploit" (link in my first post)?

I changed my avatar so it's work 30K now. The full size version of my previous avatar was 8,000 * 8,000 pixels (64MP)! The PSD was 160MB! If 30K is still too big, I can just remove my picture. The problem with trying to get rid of it manually is some are sophisticated enough to replicate themselves over and over....this is why tools are needed.

I would try the following in no PARTICULAR order. They are free dloads.

Stinger
Ewido
aswclnr

Run them in safe mode with system restore turned off.

patio. 8-)Use AVG Free and Adaware SE.

Yes, unless your OS has been damaged due to the virus.I would do as patio suggested in reply #6 and then see whether you can run regedit.

Your avatar file size now is not too bad for an animated image. If you decide to go back to your former image, just grab the one I posted. If you're using Internet Explorer, right click on the image and select Save Picture As. ewido might help too Quote

how can I build a formula based on these things from one cell?
If you mean put the entire formula in one cell, perhaps that can be done with nested IF statements but I think it's unnecessarily complicated. I'd use separate formulas for each level of commission and then sum them in a TOTAL column. If you don't want to display the separate columns, then just hide them.

Here's what I would do:

Sales Commission
                     1st tier 2nd tier 3rd tier 4th tier Total
18,000.00 1000 1250 1500 1050 4800

Formulas:
1st tier: =IF(A3>5000,5000*0.2,A3*0.2)
2nd tier: =IF((AND(A3>5000,A3<=10000)=TRUE),(A3-5000)*0.25,IF(A3>10000,5000*0.25,0))
3rd tier: =IF((AND(A3>10000,A3<=15000)=TRUE),(A3-10000)*0.3,IF(A3>15000,5000*0.3,0))
4th tier: =IF((AND(A3>15000,A3<=20000)=TRUE),(A3-15000)*0.35,IF(A3>20000,5000*0.35,0))
Total: =SUM(B3:E3)

Note: you do not say what to do when sales amount is greater than 20,000.

OK, you sent me a PM asking for additional categories, ending with over 60K in sales. For the benefit of other viewers, I'll post that here rather than reply via PM:

            Formula
0-5000 -20%
>5000-1000 -25%
>10000-15000 -30%
>15000-20000 -35%
>20000-25000      -40%      =IF((AND(A3>20000,A3<=25000)=TRUE),(A3-20000)*0.4,IF(A3>25000,5000*0.4,0))
>25000-30000      -45%      =IF((AND(A3>25000,A3<=30000)=TRUE),(A3-25000)*0.45,IF(A3>30000,5000*0.45,0))
>30000-35000      -50%      =IF((AND(A3>30000,A3<=35000)=TRUE),(A3-30000)*0.5,IF(A3>35000,5000*0.5,0))
>35000-40000      -55%      =IF((AND(A3>35000,A3<=40000)=TRUE),(A3-35000)*0.55,IF(A3>40000,5000*0.55,0))
>40000 -60% =IF(A3>40000,A3-40000)*0.6
Total            =SUM(B3:J3)
If you are not NECESSARILY need to KEEP the worksheet clean, and to avoid lengthy formulas, you may refer to the example I attached.
You can hide the DETAILS (col. C to N) if you don't want to show them.

The advantages of my example are:
1. you can always come back to check the distribution details shall there be any issue in the future.
2. chances of having error in calculation due to formula mistake is minimal.
3. if you want, we can put the criterias (e.g. 1st 5K, following 10K, etc.) into reference cells, then you can change the criterias easily in the future.thanks so much. You saw exactly what I was looking for and "nailed it". I have one more favor if I may:

how do I build a formula doing the following

same SCENARIO but the sales person closes 22000 in fees and they are paid at

0-20000 is 30%
>20000-30000 is 40%
> 30000 is 50%

the only difference is that if they close as an example 19000, they are paid 30% of that number, but if they close 22000 they make 40% of the whole amount and if they close say 31000 they get paid 50% of the whole amount.

How do I build a formula that knows when I fill in a cell with a sales amount it knows to calculate the whole amount at the correct %. If I type in 19000 it knows to multiply that number by 30%. If I type in 22000 it knows to multiply that number by 40% and the same if the sales exceed 30000?

thanksThis will do it: =IF(A1<=20000,A1*0.3,IF(A1>30000,A1*0.5,A1*0.4)), where A1 contains the sales amount. The formula is in B1. The logic: If S (S=sales) <=20000, then multiply by 30%; if not and if S > 30000, then multiply by 50%; if not (meaning S is >20000 and <=30000), then multiply by 40%.

Michael may have a different solution. Just as with your previous question, a solution can often be achieved by different approaches.

By the way, I suggest you get an Excel reference (book, CD, etc.) and do some studying. It will help you become more able to resolve such issues without assistance. If you're near a municipal library, they may have some references for checkout.rjhocker, I know what you want because that's part of my job. Btw, I think if you understand my example (how it works), then you should have no problem to do the second.
So, do you understand how it works? If you don't really understand, I can provide you the formulation.

soybean, I don't think Excel tutorials will teach things like this. It's more to the experience of using combination of formulas/function.

And - to show that I didn't learn nuthin' today - if I type "tree ?" it tells me that if I do the "tree" command without the /f it gives me only directories and subdirectories, and not files as well.

ThanksSpot on. I really don't think you want every file on your hard DRIVE listed. I have... let's see... 80,000+ files and counting... Now, Dilbert, you're an expert, so you MUST envisage a redirect of the huge file list to a file for further processing; no need to patronise the enquirer!

Solve : HELP me erase my HDD!!!!!!!?

Answer»

so here goes!

i recently crashed my comp (vaio)
can't fine any of my windows CD.
i have no way of rebooting my computer because i have a corupt boot file, krnl.exe i beleive it was.
i decided that i will have to FORMAT the whole drivee and start from scratch.

is there a way i can format C: drive without being able to get into my computer. might be a dumb ? but its worth a trry. The Windows CD you can't seem to find will do that...does this machine have a floppy drive ? ?nope!!!???

i wish then i could have made a boot disk.

also yea i looked friggin everywhere for that windows disk and i can't seem to locate it.

but oh well. what can i do now.If you did manage to format the computer, without a Windows disk, then what?i was planning on buying a LEGAL copy of home
Get the legal copy of Home BUT without a previous version of Windows, you will either need a full version (over $200) or an OEM version (over $100).that is correct sir.

but i could not find other option/road that i can take to recover my sytem without a windows disk.

i am fully aware how much itll cost me. Will you BIOS allow you to boot from a USB external floppy drive?

http://floppydisk.com/usb.htmcheck you screen the beginning of the boot process. you should see some key command to do a restore (like F2, F10, F12).

I believe Sony PUTS their recovery software on a hidden partition.

Alan <>< i dunno!!!!

if your asking if there is an option for a floppy then no there isn't.
it will only LET me choose either my dvd drive or my cd drive and HDD of course.

will my bios recognize it if i just plug it in, hmmmmmmm

if thats the case maybe i should get that external drive............ :-/ Quote

Alan <><

done all that i can't find the anything that will work.

if it is on a hidden partition its not anyof the F keys or DELETE key.You will need a Windows CD. There is no "easy" button.deux321,

You don't say what Sony Vaio you have, but here is a link to several different Sony System Recovery CD's on eBay

[highlight]Sony Recovery CD's eBay[/highlight] thank you very much for the link

but i do have a quick question though, just to be safe, will the recovery cd be able to reinstall that BOOT file that was missing or corupt. it doesn't say. all they say is that it will boot up so you can repair or backup files.

if i get into the OS where can i find the file to replace......... :-/A recovery CD from the manuf. will take that machine back to day 1 out of the factory so yes it will repair that file and yes it will boot...
You will however lose all your data and any programs you have installed SINCE then.

Solve : Change administrator's name?

Answer»

When originally entering my name as Administrator on my home computer, a new Dell , I misspelled my name and now a zillion files appear to have repeated this error. Instead of "RONALD Hamowy" my name READS "Ronald Hamowyh." I am prevented from changing the folder name titled "Documents and Settlings," which appears to be the folder CONTAINING most of these misspellings (most of which are cookies). Is there any way to change this. I should LIKE to correct this problem since it is driving me crazy. Or will I have to legally change my name? This has been bothering me for weeks but no one, including the technicians at Dell, appear to be able to help with this. Surely there must be some way of changing the name of the Administrator without trashing the computer? Would it help if I were to change each of the file entries in the "Documents and Settings" file that contain the misspelling? Help!Simply changing the account name will not do?Create a second adminstrative account. Use that to change the filenames. You will also need to trawl through the registry, changing mis-spellings; the usual disclaimers apply. Even then, you will not catch absolutely everything...

Solve : All downloads stop?

Answer»

So I just got this brand new computer just a few days ago, right? So I managed to GET it all set up (albeit I have to sit on the floor) and I go to download a video that I like and yay! It works! So I started a few more downloads and then left so it could do it's thing and when I came back a few minutes later, they were all not downloading. They all looked as though they were, only the numbers weren't changing. So I cancelled them all and tried again. Same thing. They all got to various percentages then stopped. So I tried downloading only one thing and it did the same.

Small, short downloads work though. I downloaded firefox, vlc media player and some other small thing and they all finished fine. If you need the specs, tell me what you need because I'm no good at figuring out what can be helpful.

Can anyone help me? This is really really annoying! (I wanted to get MapleStory up and running SOON. )Need...more...info (gasp)

You don't say if you're using a dial-up or high-speed connection / what your connection speed is / how big are the successful downloads are & the unsuccessful ones.

Alan <>< SEE, I said I didn't know what info to give. xD None of the info you just requested was on my mental list of info I ended up not giving. xD

So anyways, yeah. I have the AOL with Broadband (and beyond that I don't know the connection speed). The sucessful downloads are generally under 8 Mb (but I did have a 2.3Mb one stop on me. x.x But I think it may have been my fault...Man, I hope not. xD) The unsuccessful one's are usually up in the 100 Mb range. I believe I had a 60 Mb one stop along with a 163 Mb one.

Any better? Need any other info? x.x;Help please? =DOn some large downloads I have the same problem(s). It can be the time of day / how many others (using AOL) on using the Internet at that time / other users in the house on the Internet when you are / the site you're trying to download from...etc.

Try downloading at another time (early in the morning or late at night) and see if that makes a difference.

Does anyone else you know use AOL w/Broadband? If so, try downloading with their computer and see if you have the same issue.

BTW - AOL has a boatload of subscribers so that might also be part of the problem...that and the size of your downloads.

Alan <><

Well the thing is, this is the same thing I've been using for 2 years now. I just unhooked the dsl box thingy from the old computer and put it on the new computer. I wonder, could it have anything to do with the fact that I'm using the Ethernet cable instead of the USB cable like I used to?

Besides, I don't use the AOL BROWSER for anything beside e-mail and IM. I use firefox for everything and I've never had a problem like this. And I was trying to download them around 11 PM (which is when I normally start downloading because it seems like everything goes faster then)

This is the only computer with internet currently. (The other one just sits there being on with all it's lights flashing at me. D; )
I thought it might be the size of the download, but like I said, I had a 2.3 Mb download stop too. It seems to do it a lot when I start clicking on stuff, so I tried not clicking stuff and it still did it, it just lasted a teensy bit longer.

Gah. This is frusterating. Bittorent works though. Yay....I want direct downloads back, though. >>;Still trying to solve this. =DOkay, I'm not sure why, but it seems to work fine now. o_O

All I did was finally move the computer off the floor and onto the desk and when I turned it back on, Norton finally ran all of its setup-ish stuff and now downloads work so...Yeah. o_OBit Torrent relies on seeders and other clients to share data, if your client does not see them, it can not download. lawl, if thats his problem he just shoulda put header as "help with illegal downloading". =p

Most people dont even know how to open ports and the likes for torrents. A good client though for people who just want to share videos and photos with friends (yea right) is bitcomet. It automatically SETS up the ports and stuff. Quote

Bit Torrent is not illegal software, neither is using Bit Torrent. Unless you download illegal files with it.

Solve : How Do i Dump the EXTRA XP files?

Answer»

I have WINDOWS XP HOME w/SP2 and i want to make it lighter by cleaning out the extra junk files, preloaded software (Online SERVICES, AOL, etc..).LOG, temp, and other useless files like Prairewind.bmp (it's one of the things i'll never use). Is there a easy way to do this or a MICROSOFT program that--oh forget that. Any thoughts or ADVISE would be great. thanksThe EASIEST way to get rid of unnecessary programs is to use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Getting rid of that other stuff is going to be a bit harder. I don't know of any programs that will make it "easy" :-(

Alan <>< :-)Use Crap Cleaner (Click)This is a good question, I have Windows XP Pro, and have never been able to get rid of certain programs that come with it, like 'Netmeeting'....Yeah I am in the same boat as you guys. I have always wanted to get rid of stuff like the windows games and windows media player and pretty much yeah all the junk that comes with XP...Some of those things, such as unused desktop backgrounds, and those Windows games, just TAKE up disk space, and don't actually slow your computer down. Unless you're running low on disk space, be careful before you start deleting things.Although you can render your machine useless there are a few programs out there ...

NLite is one of them.

patio. 8-)What do you mean render your machine useless? does windows really need the programs I listed in my post to run correctly? or are you reffering to other files? When you start pruning files from an OS there is no telling what you might wind up with.
I see no problem using Add/Remove to get rid of unwanted programs but i wouldn't just indiscriminately be removing things i considered bloat.

Solve : Unable to shutdown.exe when computer is "lock"?

Answer»

I am using Windows XP Professional on a stand alone pc.

During the day I ctr alt del to lock the computer to run some REPORTS. With the windows SCHEDULER I schedule "shutdown.exe -s -t 0" to shut down the pc at 5pm.

When using ctr alt del to lock the pc the shutdown.exe does not work. When the pc is not lock, the shutdown.exe works. The only program that is open before the shutdown.exe is another scheduler to run the reports.

During the day, NEED to ctr alt del for security reasons.

Looks like I need a script to ctr alt del to unlock the pc so that the shutdown.exe can work.

Have look into the msdn library and could FIND any appropriate scirpt.

Need some pointers on where the scripts are or there are other ways of shutting down the pc or someone has such a script.

Thanks in advance.
Download the free shutdown.exe from www.beyondlogic.org It is the only shutdown utility that can shutdown or re-boot a PC that has been locked. :exclamation

Solve : AIM Issue?

Answer»

Over the PAST few days I've noticed my computer slowing down in its usual processes. I finally checked the Task Manager on this and found that my AIM was listed at over 100,000 in Memory Usage. I figured this was just because it had been on for a while, so I exited and shut the computer down for a while. But now, everytime I have AIM running, it's just EATING up all sorts of Memory. I've run all the normal Ad-Aware, CCleaner, Ewido type programs. Any IDEA why this would be happening? I'm using an AMD ATHLON Xp 2400+ with 2 GHZ and 512 MB RAM. Have you tried uninstalling Aim and reinstalling it?

Why are you not using an anti-virus solution?

Solve : Password protect a drive?

Answer»

Is there a free (the operative word here is "free" ) password program I can USE to protect a partition on a hard drive?

I build a loaner pc and have created a partiton that I used ACRONIS to make a complete backup of the hard drive. I want to keep prying-eyes that are tempted to see what's there out!!

I also have Ubuntu on another partiton but they can't get to that one.

Any suggestions?

XP Pro SP2 / 1G ram / 160G SATA hdd / AVG / Ewido / Spywareblaster / Adaware

Alan <>< Need... More... Info... (gasp )

...Nah, no CLUE. xDYou could just try using the Windows passwordamajiggy to protect the folders, but I'm not SURE about an image file. But at least then if they access the image file, it will be all blocked inside.Acronis itself will allow you to password protect an image...

It comes up EARLY on right after it asks for a description of the image you are creating...
