Solve : Win XP takes at least 50% of your RAM??

Answer»

I recently HEARD a claim about Windows that was a bit difficult to believe. An old-time Network Admin told me that Windows XP sequesters at least 50% of your available RAM while it is operating. So, in other words, If you have 512MB of RAM, at least 256 is taken as reserve for Windows. 1GB of available RAM would equate to 512MB claimed by Windows. 2GB eaten up if you had a total of 4GB installed, etc. etc.. This phenomena wasn't explained as being leaky or unreleased memory. Just that Windows plain and simple grabs no less than 50% of your physical RAM period. Has anyone come across reputable claims of this nature anywhere? For that matter, has anyone come accross dubious claims of this nature? I'd appreciate any leads. Even though my information COMES from a reputable source and I'm certainly no fan of Windows, I’m not buying this one yet.

--Oober NooberOk that guy or who ever told you this is he is not right i never had the problemmy preformance monitor said that i used 10% of my 1gig of RAM when i first installed windowsXP pro.(without anything else running except windows essential TASKS).I'm not buying that one, either.  Here's some info on Performance fields overview pertaining to Windows Task Manager.

Solve : can't boot PC?

Answer»

yesterday my computer was on when the power WENT out in my neihborhood. I haven't been able to get it working since it came back. I'll get to the windows XP logo and it'll stay there. I went in Safe mode and did a system restore but that didn't WORK. I'm out of ideas short of reinstalling windows. I was WONDERING if I had any other options before I did that though.id suggest reinstalling windows, sorry. . your harddrive might have been damaged from the power outage also.

you might also want to wait for others to respond because thats the best advice i can give you.Alright. thanks. I guess I'll do it tomorrow if no one says anything different by then. You could TRY a repair install. Do you have a REAL Windows CD?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=repair+install+xp

You may get lucky.Thnks. I'll keep that option open too. It's working now. A friend of mine suggested I go to "run" in the start menu and type "msconfig"  After that I picked regular start up and it worked.  I figured I'd put this up just incase anyone else ran into a similar problem. I'm really relieved. Anyway I appreciate your time and help.

Solve : Win 3.11 Video Problem?

Answer»

I have a Viglen 486 laptop running DOS 6.22, OpenGem and Windows for workgroups 3.11.
Some of my Apps wouldn't work because I only had 16 colours. So I changed the resolution and colours in Windows Setup. Typical of me, I choose a setup that my LCD MONITOR, nor the monitor connected to it, supports. So, after the startup screen, everything goes black.
How can I undo this? What does a boot disk do?From the DOS prompt type setup and press ENTER. You will be able to reset Windows to the default VGA display.

Life was a lot simpler then.  Yar, thank ye.
All sorted.

I think having a choice of three OS/Shells is great, its FUNNY, I can start GEM in DOS, then started windows in GEM, then start GEM in Windows, until I run out of memory. Quote

Solve : Disk Cleanup?

Answer»

Can anyone tell why Windows XP professional disk cleanup will not clean "Old compressed files" and any ideas how to go about GETTING it todo it. Does the clean happen on rebooting? What makes you think "Windows XP professional disk cleanup will not clean 'Old compressed files'"? Quote

What makes you think "Windows XP professional disk cleanup will not clean 'Old compressed files'"?

Afer RUNNING the clean up there are still files listed in the old comprressed folder
AFAIK disk cleanup does not clear (delete) old files, it just compresses them.  The way a FILE is defined as being old is that you can set a number of days since the last access before the file is considered as being old and is then compressed when Cleanup is run.

Here is an extract from http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm

    *      Compress Old Files

Unlike the other categories, Compress Old Files doesn't delete any files from the drive. It compresses files that Windows hasn't accessed for a specified period of time. The files are still available, but there will be a slight increase in access times because the files will be decompressed the next time they are accessed. Note that when Compress Old Files is highlighted an Options button appears. Clicking it will allow you to set the number of days to wait before an unaccessed file is compressed.

Good luck Quote
AFAIK disk cleanup does not clear (delete) old files, it just compresses them.
So, I MAY have old files from 3 years ago, files that haven't been used for that long and that I do not need, and they would still be on my hard drive in compressed form.  Is that right?  This isn't making a lot of sense to me.  Surely, there's a way to stop Compress Old Files from just continuing to accumulate old files and keep them in compressed form forever.

When I run Disk Cleanup, it shows no drive space being consumed by Compress Old Files.  I click on Options and see that it's set at 50 days (a default setting, I believe, since I don't recall ever setting that).  So, the 0 MB shown next to Compress Old Files means I have no files that have not been used in over 50 days, right?  That seems hard to believe.  But, indeed, I guess it indicates I either have no files unused for over 50 days, or I've run Disk Cleanup at frequent enought intervals to remove unused files less than 50 days old.

So, anyway, Compress Old Files appears to be the oddball in the Disk Cleanup panel; all the others do, in fact, remove files from the hard drive while Compress Old Files compresses old files and removes nothing.

Solve : Need help with dual booting 2 hard drives?

Answer»

I have two hard DRIVES which i am trying to get it so i have the option of which drive i want to use.

Computer specs as follows:
Intel 350MHz CPU
Nvidia Vanta 8mb Graphics Card

I'll have to get more specs when i get home, i'm at school right now.

The primary master is a 20gig HD with Windows 2000 installed on it
The Secondary Master (i think this has to be slave but my Bios doesnt have an option to change it) is a 6 gig with Windows 98 Installed.

What i have so far is i have edited my boot.ini file on the 2000 drive and now have the option of which Hard Drive to boot at start up, which is this:

[boot LOADER]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows 2000 on primary drive" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows 98 on Backup Drive" /fastdetect

The problem i am having here is that when i try to boot the 98 HardDrive it says there is a certain .exe file missing which is used on windows 2000 (i will have to get the exact name when i get home)

So the trouble here is i think the computer is recognising the hard drive as the windows 2000 one but trying to boot from 98, i need it so it just boots as 98

Another problem is that the 6gig hard drive has labled itself D and has uninstalled my cd drive which is a little frustrating.

And last but not least, when i booted the 2000 hard drive the 6 gig showed up in my computer as D drive, which is fine, but when i reset the computer it no longer showed up as anything and my cd drive also stopped showing up as well, which means i cant use cd's.

Yeah, i know this all sounds a little confusing, it does to me too. But it you have any possible fixes can you please list them here and it you need anymore info about my computer just ask.Well, I don't know how to fix it other than to format your drives and start over.  But, I do know that Win 98 needs to be drive C.  So, that's part of your problem.  This is why Win 9x should be installed first in a dual boot configuration. What do you mean first?  And how WOULD i get the windows 98 HD to be drive C and the 2000 disk like E or something

Plus Windows 98 doesnt have a boot.ini  file (well i COULDNT find it)If you were starting a fresh dual boot installation and installing Win 98 first (first means before Win 2k, ok?), Win 98 will automatically be installed on C.  Then, when the installation of Win 2K is started, you would designate another drive/partition for it.  It you only have two drives/partitions, I don't know whether you can elect to make the Win 2K drive/partition E or whether it must be D.  If it must be D, what the big deal?  Just let your CD drive be E.

Here's a Microsoft reference: Description of Supported Dual-Boot Configurations Between Windows 2000 and Other Windows-Based Operating Systems. Quote

Solve : Regular sound card drivers in Windows 3.1??

Answer»

How do I install a regular soundcard in Windows 3.1?
I don't know what kind of sound card I have. So therefor, its kind of hard to install it.

What do I do?

Computer:
90MHz
Windows 3.1
22MB RAM
Makeshift configuration
DOS 6.22
look for any numbers/letters on it at all put them in google & see if any match a sound card model.
or try standard soundblaster card DRIVER then standard

failing that download a PCI sniffer, a program, (freeware mostly) that identifies cards.
some RUN just off a floppy disk.
Okay. I cant OPEN it up to see the card, its a laptop. I will get that PCI sniffer thing. What is the laptop make and model? Quote

What is the laptop make and model?
Gateway 2000 SOLO Series, first model. Its very difficult to get the information on the Gateway website since it doesent have a model number. Some sound cards just do not have Win 3.1 drivers, particularly true of newer equipment. Model numbers can be critical, especially in laptops. Perhaps that info is available in the BIOS. It is in Dell's.Man Win 3.1 WOW.. that is OLD VERY VERY VERY OLD..  try going to driverguide.com and resigter and SEARCH.. I guess since Everest Home has been mentioned a billion times here you MIGHT have forgotten how useful it can be ? ?

Solve : BIG QUESTION from an unexperienced user!?

Answer»

Okay! Let me tell you this horrible story that happened to me today.
I don't understand much in computers, only on the level of the USER.
My friend gave me her computer, which she received from her brother, who in turn bought it used from the univerisity.
I couldn't make wireless internet work on the computer for a long time. I tried to read through instructions, but it would still not work. Then I asked my friend to look at it... He said that the computer would work better if I installed Windows XP on it. The HUGE mistake that I did, was, because of my ignorance, I allowed him to install Upgrade of XP from his already used disc. I had not idea that it wasn't allowed. Anyways, my computer kept telling me that I needed to activate Windows... I tried to do what it said, but it told me in the end that that disc was already exceeded the number of activations. So I went to the university bookstore to get my own copy of upgade, but the young man there informed me that I have to reinstall the WHOLE system... because I tried to install "illigal copy". I was so mad at my friend. Can anyone tell me what I need to do now? Should I buy Windows home and install that first? What does Windows Home and Full version mean? Is that what I need?
Please help, because I am totally clueless in the kind of business.
Yuliajust buy windowsXP pro OEM version. the OEM version is a cheaper version. its cheaper because the OEM version is really meant for computer manufactures, however, websites and some stores sell it ANYWAY. there is no DIFFERENCE between windowsXP pro and windows XP pro OEM except the price.

heres the difference...

windowsXP-          $250.00
windows XP OEM-  $150.00Windows 2000-   Priceless

Solve : Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer not working?

Answer»

For some reason windows explorer and internet explorer only work in one of my user accounts.  When I TRY to explore a folder, the taskbar disappears for a couple of seconds, there is an hourglass symbol during that time, then the taskbar comes back but the explorer window doesn't open.

I made sure rkadmin.dll is not in the system32 folder.  I have run Spybot, Ad-Aware, Ewido, Trojan Hunter, CWS Shedder, with no luck.  Originally even the user account that WORKS, I would lose use of windows explorer and Internet explorer after 40 minutes or so.  I ran sfc /scannow and that seemed to fix the problem with one account.  But when I tried to do that logged onto only one of the other accounts (the one that worked was not logged on) it didn't fix the problem.

All of the accounts are administrator accounts.  I tried creating a new account, but that had the same problem.

Hope this makes sense.  Bottom line I can only access windows explorer, Internet Explorer and file search in one user account.

Using Windows XP Pro SP2

Thanks. If you have your Windows XP CD, you can reinstall the OS:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/Didn't work.  I repaired windows and the problem still exists.I. What are your system specifications?

II. Please try the following as a quick test:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete.
3. Scroll through the list of processes and look for "iexplore.exe".
4. Report on what you find/do not find.ASUS A7V333 Ver.1 MB
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
768 MB PC2700 Ram
Windows XP Professional SP2
ATI Rage 128 Graphics Card

When I click on the Internet Explorer Icon there is a redraw of the desktop(barely perceptible) an hourglass for a second then nothing.  IExplore.exe is not in the process list of the Task Manager.

Thanks Did you restore the entire o/s? What do you mean by repair? If the repair doesn't work you shold restore the o/s.
Unfortunately the only system restore POINTS I had were after the problem started.

I repaired the o/s using the installlation disk, when the prompt asked to use the recovery console I chose the option to install windows.  Then the installation SEARCHED for an existing windows installation and then repaired that windows o/s.

I did find that booting into Safe Mode, all user accounts act normally.  I can use the file search, explore folders, and open internet explorer.  Not sure if that helps.

Thanks. Quote

Solve : doesn´t set up?

Answer»

Hello,

My computer, which has two partitions in its hard disk, with Millenium and XP, respektively. Millenium (in C) will not start up any more. I have tried several TIMES to set up ME again using start disk fails at ca 15 minutes left to completion with the message of: "... completed updating files, continuing to LOAD windows".

I do not want to FORMAT C at this stage.

Any suggestion??

Thanks in advance. What happened before it stopped working? Did you make any changes or new programs, or did it just happen without warning? I'm not sure about how ME installation works... is it possible to boot from the CD and do a reinstall?I had IR/keyboard and mouse connected to it. I replaced them with conventional ones (that I has used before) and tried to free an interrupr adress (?) to enable sound blaster (which otherwise did nor work and computer asked for it).

It can happen that I had disactivated one component which I did not have sufficient information on (still, I can not understand why windows would not start up!). It was yesterday evening.

This morning the copmputer did not start with ME and I could not reinstall it!

Thanks in advance. The most important question is what happened prior to this?

At this POINT, it look like a full reinstall is necessary, and then you will have to  mess with XP to get it to be able to load at all.By ATTEMPTING to re-install ME you have probably overwritten the boot info for XP.

What file system(s) are you using :-?

Solve : Unredable word documents?

Can ANYONE tell how to read .doc file set in Microsoft Office 2001 wish to read in Microsoft 2003 they open but not readable. ThanksFirst of all...might I RECOMMEND updating your Office 2003 program...if you haven't already done so.

Microsoft Office, like the Windows Operating system, itself, needs to be updated to patch bugs within the program.

You might WANT to visit the Office Update page LOCATED at

http://g.msn.com/9SE/1?http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx&&DI=6066&IG=a3da0390d63e4fb9bbeb4941cf209d59&POS=2&CM=WPU&CE=1&CS=AWP&SR=1

Once there, click the link to "Check for updates".  Make sure you have your Office CDs readily available in case you need them.

I know, for a fact, there is a viewer update for Office software, so that would be a good place to start.

Once you've completed your updates, try to open the .doc files again and post your results here.Try Wordpad...

Don't know what your problem is there but Word 2003 definitely will read earlier versions of Word files.  I've opened many Office 97 files with Office 2003.

By the way, there is no Microsoft Office 2001.  Office 97 ... Office 2000 ... Office XP (2002) ... Office 2003.

Solve : Video card.?

Hi,

I found this video card has a label "Mad Dog" on it, so I did a bit research on the net and found the driver for it, it's a NIVIDIA Geforce MX440 driver. In the BIOS I set the Primary video to PCI-the "Mad Dog" card, cuz the screen looks better, everything is fine until I try to play DVD movie, strange enough, the movie only plays in black and white. When I set the Primary video back to Onboard, the color is back. Why is that? I went through the Mad Dog control panel, nowhere can I found anything to do with color or B&W,  Did the Mad Dog eat all my color?  :-? :-?

What DirectX do you have installed? :-? :-? :-? Hmmmm, I am pretty sure it's all up to the latest, this is running on Windows 2K Pro SP4 with the latest update from MS, the first thing I do after a freash installation is to go on MS to get every update they have, I assume all DirectX are there, is that right?

Oh, the vedio card has only 64M of RAM, could that be the problem?

No, that card should have no problem playing DVDs.

You mentioned a "MADDOG" control panel.  Do you mean nVidia control panel?  You should see an item in your Windows Control Panel for nVidia nView Desktop Manager.
Yeah, that's what I meant the NIVIDIA control panel. I have the PC HOOKED up to two monitors, one goes to te Mad Dog crad and the other one goes to the onboard video. when I drag the screen of the MOVE form te Mad Dog monitor to the onboard monitor, the movie is in color, but when I drag it back to the Mad God monitor it changes back to B&W, I tried to set the resolution and the color depth on the Mad Dog, it doesn't seem to help.

Can I teach this mad dog a new trick?

Yeah, I found this card when I was cleaning out the closet, it was still attach to an old PC. The PC isn't MINE, it was sitting there for 3 years and no one claims it. The card seem to be working fine, the color is good and nothing seem to be wrong with it except when comes to playing DVD movies. I never play with vedio card before  so I am not sure what to do.

Solve : USB question again?

The problem:
When I plug in my USB card reader, the LED on the reader lit up but that's it. The mobo doesn't acknowledge the esixtence of the reader. I tested the reader on my other PC and MAC, it works. My other PC runs WinXP Home SP2 and it works perfectly. I went into the device manager, looked into USB controller,

On the MOBO, it says everything is working properly and it says:
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller-24C2
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller-24C4
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller-24C7
Standard Enhenced PCI to USB Host Controller
USB 2.0 Root Hub
USB Root Hub

On the good machine, the one that runs WinXP Home SP2, it says:

Intel(R) 82801EB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller-24D4
Intel(R) 82801EB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller-24D7

If someone can help me with this I will really appreciate. I read and tried various thing from MSKB and some other froum to no avail. Quick, before I am going bold!!!!!!

MacPCI've never used a card reader; I just connect my digital camera directly to my computer to transfer photos.  Does the card reader require a special DRIVER to be installed?  Do other USB devices work on that computer?  Does it not work under either OS (on the dual boot machine)?

Do both your PCS have the same motherboard?  I noticed the similarity in Device Manager info.Hi Soybean,

Thanks for the reply. As a matter of fact, the mobos are very simular.
I did install the driver for the USB Reader on the bad PC, it doesn't wrok, on the good PC and the Mac, I didn't even need to install the drive, just plug the reader in and it works. I also tried to plug my camera in, on the good PC and the Mac, work flawlessly, but on the bad one, the camera just say initilising USB and stuck there forever.   And I know for sure hardwarewise everything is fine, it is a software issue, I tried also install two other USB controllers that MS found for me, and yes, I tried it on Win2k and WinXP, man I tried almost everything I can think of and my poor hair line is receeding fast!!!! I have the feeling it's probably something really stupid like something I forget to turn on, or something like that in the end but I just can't think of what it may be. :-? :-? :-?

My last resort is to buy a PCI to USB card, but that's too easy, where is the fun?

MacPCYou say you "know for sure hardwarewise everything is fine".  Why do think so when neither your card reader nor your camera work on that computer?  Again, do any other USB devices work on that computer?  Have you tried all USB ports, front and back?  Have you ever successfully used a USB device with that computer?

Does Device Manager show any yellow triangles, any unknown devices?
Did you buy or build that computer?  What is the model number of your motherboard?Well, the reason I think all hardware are fine because my two USB printers, my USB camera and the reader all work on the other PC and Mac. And the mobo came out of a eMachine T-1840, a Trigem Imperial with a 1.9GHz Celeron. Everything was working fine on that Trigem Imperial mobo, the only reason I got this mobo is because my friend needed a better mobo so I swapped with him.

I built this machine using the Trigem Imperial mobo-the mobo for the T-1840,  it's been working great. all I/O except for the USB. The complication came in when I install the driver for various devices, I downloaded the drivers from eMachine for the T-1840, but I got te sound, video and everything working, so my conclusion at this point is,

1. One or more of the drivers is not compatable with the OS, but how COULD that be? the mobo was running on WinXP Pro SP2 before, the same WinXP version that I have,

2. This is what puzzles me, in the device manager, there's no yellow "Bermuda" triangle and no exclimation mark or question mark of any sort, and

3, Which I think may be the most likely senario, something is missing, but what? what am I missing? :-? :-?

Reading the MSKB just confuses me further.

MacPCTry this on the bad machine...don't skip any steps or get ahead of yourself.
Power down.
Unplug all USB devices.
Power up, let everything initialise.
Open Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager.
Find ALL references to USB at the bottom of the list of System Devices.
Right clik all of them and select "Delete"
You will get a warning message...ignore it.
Shut down and re-boot.
Windows will re-install your USB drivers.
After a clean re-boot power down and re-introduce 1 USB device and see if it is fixed.
If so power down and ADD one device at a time.

You should be good to go...

patio.   8-)Hi patio,

I actually tried this many times already, it doesn't work for whatever reason.
They other thing I don't understand is there are six USB ports on the mobo,
4 on the back and two on the mobo that connect by cable to the front panel, shouldn't there be six USB controller drivers and six USB hubs in the device manager?

MacPCJust to follow up on this USB issue. I finally gave in and brought a cheap $5 PCI to USB card, now it works. However, it still doesn't answer my question as in why it didn't work on the USB on the mobo. I just plug the card, no need to install any drivers on Win2K and WinXp then there it goes. Could it be there resources ran out out?

MacPCIt's more likely the motherboard has issues.  You might be right, I was so sure the mobo is good because everything else is working fine. Oh well, at least I get to keep some of my hair after this.

Solve : Cannot Read My Word Documents?

Answer»

I have Windows XP
Trying to read/open my word documents (the icon now looks like a white box with blue status bar/6 buttons on the page) I get this message.

This File does not have a prgram associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

I looked in Folder Options but am none the wiser, I clicked restore default nothing happened.

I have tried to do system restore several times upto almost a month AGO but cant get a restore.

I was able to view my documents yesterday and today I can't.

In between that time I got a message SAYING pc was running out of space and to click on icon to clean up
disc space. I checked the boxes it recommended and also the Windows components it suggested I can't recall what they were though.

After doing that I wasn't able to view my documents. I downloaded Wordview but that's useless as I can only read my docs and not edit them. I don't have any Windows XP discs aside from the motherboard disc that came with the computer. Hoping it's a simple download to solve, thank you in advanceHave you run an anti-virus and snti-spyware check?

Try this...as a stop-gap measure...right-click the doc you WANT to open, choose 'Open With', then choose Wordpad.  Does that open it.  If it does then you should be able to edit your doc.

Have you reinstalled Office?

Alan <><

Yes Alan I have both adaware and spytbot along with registry cleaner and AVG which does a daily scan.
When I right click on doc to open it says open with... and nothing else, then I get the POP up box saying Windows cannot open this file, it needs to know what PROGRAM created it. I didn't purchase any specific program, it's the standard window document program that comes with windows xp...I only have notepad.

I haven't reinstalled Office as I never had Office on my pc. Yesterday I needed to view documents urgently so temporarily downloaded WordView which let me read but not edit any docs.  I appreciate your taking time out to help Alan thanks anyway.
The title of your topic was poorly chosen.  Since you don't have MS Office installed, you DON'T have any Word files.  You may have Wordpad files or Notepad files, but you don't have Word files because Word files are only created by Word, which is part of Office. It sounds like you dont have MS Office Installed but if you can afford the MS office then here download this OPEN OFFICE it is free http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.3/index.html?focus=download Hope this helps..Thanks for the help, I've also found anything I download off the net I cant open getting the same error message. I'll try the download you suggested. Quote

I'd also recommend Open Office.  It's free, looks similar to Microsoft Office applications, and it reads/creates Office files.  I use it and love it.Downloaded Open Office and yes I agree it works great. My issue is resolved. Thank you forum for help.

Solve : can't get out of safe mode for laptop with XP?

Answer»

I've got a work laptop that CONTRACTED the Trojan virus. Since I was unable to remove it with my lack of technical skills I thought I'd try putting in safe mode. Well I CHANGED it to safe mode, rebooted and now I can't get out of safe mode so that I could access my DESKTOP. Nothing happens. I just get a black screen that says "safe mode" in all four corners. I did a search on the website here and could not find an answer to my problem.

I tried HITTING F8 so that I could have the lap top run in normal mode but that still doesn't help the problem.

This is a work computer and I need assistance so that I'm not charged for any type of repairs a shop might have to do. I'm guessing that I'm just not doing something right. Can anyone help? :-?I don't know what a "trojan virus" is, but it sounds like you should not have had the laptop at home.

Solve : Installing XP on existing drive?

Answer»

My computer is set up right now so that one hard drive is the master (200GB), one is the SLAVE(20GB). My master drive crapped out on me. So, I would like to REINSTALL my other harddrive (20GB) as the master. My issue is that I have folders and INFORMATION on that (20GB)drive. Can I install Windows XP on it and keep the files that are there or will an install of XP wipe out that info. I don't have a way of removing the files from the (20GB)harddrive. Thanks!"Can I install Windows XP on it and keep the files that are there or will an install of XP wipe out that info?"

Unfortunately, a FRESH install WILL wipe your drive of any data you've saved.

Do you or any of your friends that are computer savvy have an external hard drive enclosure that you could put your 20g in & copy that data to another computer...THEN do an install of XP?

Alan <><  Unfortunately no, but I guess I will try to be creative and figure something out. Thanks for your responce.Buy a DVD burner and burn the contents of the 20G to a blank DVD...then proceed with your install.

patio.    8-)A suggestion, buy yourslef a new HD, install it and take out your secondary HD to preserve the data. Do your install and put the secondary drive BACK in...u better find way to remove those files.
why don't u backup ur files to CD or to somewhere else, say friends HDD
or u can create partitions over there.
and install XP on empty partition.
not sure u'll be able to do that without some software, but anyway.

Solve : Computer suddenly skipping around?

Answer»

Last night my computer was RUNNING just fine, until I downloaded and began using some cellphone ringtone program, and suddenly everything skips around.  When I move the mouse, it jumps and skips instead of just moving, and every sound or music that COMES from the computer skips too.  Also, the computer takes a lot longer, at least three times as long, to startup.  It's a laptop computer with windows XP, and I've tried removing the program, and it didn't help.  It seemed LIKE as I was running a lot of programs, it started to slow down the computer, but even after I closed all the programs and let the computer cool off, it still skipped around.IronTailFratley...  Well , how about ....... opening up the task manager .....
ctrl/alt/del  ....... and seeing what applications are running .  You should have some idea of what should be running .......
Then ,  as a precaution ..... turn-off system restore .......  start/control panel/ system ...... click the system restore tab ...and turn off system restore on all drives .......

If you don't haveSpybot ...........  http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html    d/l it and then get the latest updates ....... then do a full system scan with it .  Remove anything found .

If you don't have Ewido ....... http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ewido_security_suite_d4677.html   d/l it and get the latest updates ...and then do a full system scan ....... remove anything it finds .

Then reboot into safe mode ........ Run a full scan with your anti virus .......
remove anything it finds ........
reboot back into normal mode and see how things are ....... If they are back to normal ........ Turn system restore back on . .... if they aren't , d/l ... hijackthis ........ http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html   ...... run and save logfile and post it here .

dl65  HMM... thank you, but why do I turn off system restore?  won't that take away my ability to restore the system back to the point where the computer ran fine?Sounds like a Virus to me. You got to WATCH out what you are downloading, it's a jungle out there!

If I were you I will back up all my files and do a clean installation.

MacPC IronTailFratley....  The reason I suggested turning off the system restore .....was that if the problem turns out to be a trojan , they like to inhabit the system restore files ....... So even if you had removed it , it would still be in your system restore files and reinfect the system.

dl65  when you deleted the program did you deltete the folders too

start >my computer>local drive>program files>look for the programs folder that you delteteed and deltete that too.

Windows Update gets my vote too.Im a bit worried about installing SP2. I'm not shure i can configure it right. The info from microsoft is not exactly clear, easy and comforting. But I'll try to find someone who can help me.SP2 isn't that hard to install.  It's usually automated so that you have to make a few simple choices and it runs itself.

You DO want to back  up any data you've created...just in case.  Beings we don't know what's on your system there is the possibility that installing SP2 will break it.  Hence, back up your stuff first.

Solve : More CPU temperture question?

Answer»

OK, I refitted the cpu with a new coat of thermal compound. The cpu is a Intel CELERON D 2.93 GHz. Now I got the temperture down to 100 to 104F when it's idle. I put it through some cpu intense tasks such as compliing code, the temperture went up to at most 132F, once the TASK is done, it dropped BACK to the 100 range. Does this sound pretty good?

By the way, all these readings are ACCORDING to the Intel Active Monitor software came with the mobo. I never gave a thought to the temperture thing untill now, should I even bother to worry about it?

Solve : Weird error message when I double click on clock?

Solve : security center disabled?

Answer»

I have some sort of bug on my computer, which is a Windows XP Home EDITION.  I was on AIM when a friend imed me a link for a picture which I downloaded, and turned out to be a bug that sends itself.  Now when I run scans on my computer, using mainly Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 it tells me my security center has been disabled. The problem as it tells me is:

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disable d: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc\Start!=W=2

Everytime I click "Fix selected problems" it tells me its been fixed, yet it keeps coming back.  I don't think its reaching the core problem, but I don't know what the core problem is.  When i went to start my security center i got the message:
"Could not start Security Center service on Local Computer.
Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."

Someone please help me figure out how I can re-enable my security center and get rid of the bug.Have you tried doing a restore?how do you do a restore? driftingsam....  I wouldnt do a system restore ...as the bug ,may be a trojan and they love to hide in the system restore files.

I'm not a computer genius by any means but i've been looking AROUND at different websites while trying to upgrade my computer and I FOUND that Windows XP normally needs at least 256mb of RAM to make it run smoothly (don't know if that is different for laptops or not). And secondly the reason I am updating my computer is because it only had 8gb of hard drive and you can't do anything with that (i.e. games, save pictures, download music...) (again I don't know if it is different for laptops). But then again you can also upgrade those things as well. Anyway if your asking because your going to be buying this computer from someone then happy buying, otherwise enjoy your computer.

P.S. Remember I said I'm no computer genius. Hope this helps.
THANKS,ANYMORE HELP,

Solve : cpu temperture?

Answer»

Hi,

I wonder what is a reasonable temperture for the cpu under normal USE, that is no over clocking and any other things that might "improve" the cpu performance?

MacPCGood question. Can't be answered as is..........

What CPU?Less than 60C? DEPENDS on the processor.Well, let's say an Intel Celeron 2.9 GHz. I am getting a bit concern cuz the temperture inside of the case can get as high as 120F and the temperture probe software comes with the MOBO keeps issueing a warning when it gets to 166F. I am considering putting in a more powerful fan and perhaps get a better ventilate case.

MacPC Quote

MacPC
Contradictory points: "can get as high as 120F" and "the mobo keeps issueing a warning when it gets to 166F".  Why would the mobo issue a warning of 166F when the TEMP has only gone as high as 120F?

How many fans do you now have?  Where are they POSITIONED and which direction is the air flow?
120F is 48.88888888888889C (approximately) which is OK. Unless there is an actual problem you are experiancing, don't worry about it.Sorry, my mistake. I meant when I have the case closed, it can get as high as 166F when the software issues warning. When I leave the case open. it gets to 120F. (The room has A/C.) Guess I'll need a bigger case with a 200HP fan.

Solve : Detecting and solving Problems with CD Writers?

Answer»

Windows XP Home updated with Service Pack 2. Samsung CD Writer 52x worked fine earlier to installing SP 2;  but now the Light blinks for a while on the writer but does not detect the BLANK CDR media. Help sort out the reasons. Is it dirt on laser or the culprit is SP2 ?

Try reinstalling the driver for the CD-RW drive using the CD that came with the device, or DOWNLOAD the correct Windows XP driver for the CD-RW drive from the Samsung Web site. The culprit can and often is the blank media itself...some writers are picky about the brand. Try another brand as well...
Actually when i buy a new burner i borrow/buy one blank of all the major types and do a test burn to find out which type the burner likes.
Nothing worse than splurging on a hundred pack that's on sale only to find your burner hates the flavor.

patio.    8-)Of course I did re-install the drivers for the CD Writer and checked with the media itself which were previously working with the Writer. Yet nothing is working now.

Is it possible that dirt is sitting somewhere on the laser itself. If it is so, how to clean it with the lense cleaner, particularly when nothing works except the Indicator Light blinks for 30-40 sec. on the Writer's drive. It ould just be an old failed drive and no amount of cleaning, etc. will ever help.

How old is it and has it had a lot of use?

Solve : Recovering my PC from another PC?

Answer» Hi.. Is it possible to TAKE someone elses Recovery DVD's and Recover your computer with them?
I borrowed the Recovery DVD's from my friends Laptop it is a Acer Aspire 5601 Laptop and he has Windows Media Center with Service Pack 2 on it, and i wanted to recover my system using those DVD's is it possible? I tried it and set my DVD Drive the boot first in the BIOS SETTINGS and it read the DVD and then it went to load windows. Is there some DOS or Any software that i can download so i can put the Media Center on it.
My Friend Vitaliy he tried it and it worked, He has a Gateway Media Center Laptop and he took the Recovery DVD and recovered his Sony Vaio Desktop.
Any Help would be much appriciated.
No. Restore CD's are based on a specific maker's characteristics, BIOS, etc. Besides being illegal, it doesn't work.Ok then hear me out on this one.. My Cauzins have a HP PAVILLION Desktop Machine and mine is the same but with different models his is a Media Center Edition mine is a Windows Professioanal so can i make recovery CD's from my cauzins computer and install them on mine and recover my machine with them? well they are the same manufacturesrs Maksim ....... LOl ........ What part of what GX1_Man said didn't you understand ?

My Friend Vitaliy he tried it and it worked
So I suppose that means your going to try it .... dont be surprised if it doesnt work .........

dl65
Vitaliy seems to have problems of his own.here is a good ? I have and old xp disk so I dont have this problem it works on any comp. BUT i've been told you can only leagally put it on 1 comp. is this true if the computers you install it on are yours and remain in your possesion? And lastly i think it is a sham that you have to buy a windows cd if you dont have it I mean if you bought a premade computer that came with windows you allready paid for the software and you should be able to have what ever version came on that computer...(why dont I just learn Linux)If you read the EULA carefully you do not "own" Windows, you have just paid for the right to use it. And you are only allowed to use it on one computer. Sometimes this is the computer it came with and that's it.

That is the way Bill Gates wants it.

Solve : Internet pop3 changes?

Answer»

When I try and get on the internet or email I get an error. I then go into internet setup and find that pop3 has changed to 127.0.0.1. I enter my internet server and can then get email and on the internet but when I SHUT down the pc and bring it back up it has REVERTED to 127.0.0.1. I have the latest Microsoft updates and antivirus and I also ran adware but it doesn't help. Any help will be appreciated. That is the COMPUTER's loop back address. Are you using a software proxy?I'm not sure what a software proxy isWhat happened prior to this? Did it ever work correctly? Any playing about with settings? If a recent change, how about a system restore to a point when it did work?I tried a restore and it didn't clear up the problem. None of the settings were changed . I have windows XP home edition , macafie antivirus and I have ran adware to get rid of spyware. I know that the problem started about 2 months ago and the restore doesn't go back any further than that.Picked this up from "Googling" pop3 127.0.0.1:

"If you have McAfee's Internet Security installed then you also have
McAfee's SpamKiller installed. This program changes your settings in the
default email program. Outlook's pop3 server should be 127.0.0.1 and
the USER name/account needs to be your full email address."

Also...

"You need to turn off email scanning with McAfee or else it will probably
revert again."

Turn off the email scanning in McAfee, SET your email to the correct server and try to get your email.

Alan <><  Thanks I'll try that this weekend.

Solve : Help, my computer keeps on shutting down.?

Answer»

Im not sure if this is where this blongs, but here goes:

Every once in awhile my computer will shutdown by itself. My internet used to do it about evey 1 hour. Now, I have an emulator that I like to use. It will make the computer shut down in about 10-20 minutes. The THING is, the internet stopped making the computer shut down, but the emulator still causes it to go out. Do you know anyway I can stop this? If you are wondering, I use Windows XP and a 2001 Compaq computer.

P.S. When the somputer shuts down, only the tower will turn off. And I mean COMPLETELY turn off.Oh, and there are NO known viruses on my computer. Ive found and deleted all. I've even done a factory restore, but the problem still persists. How are your temps?
Use EVEREST to check them.
http://www.comcen.com.au/~fed/everest.zip
Try taking the SIDE off and directing a DESK fan at your computer as a test.I thought of that, but I never could open up my side. Under closer INSPECTION a couple of minutes ago, Ilearned that I screwed it, then slid it. I always tryed to lift it :-/.

Well, I learned that the fan that was blowing air to the outside was covered in crap on the inside. I cleaned that off.

so far its passed the test:

playing a rom untill computer shuts down, if it doesn't within an hour, CONGRATS! It doesn't seem to have to work as hard either.I hope it's fixed, let us know.

Solve : USB doesn't work?

Answer»

Hi,

My friend gave me a mobo. I am no sure who made it because there isn't any makers on the board, but he told me it's from a eMachine T1840 desktop. I am pretty sure it's not made by Intel. For some reasons, the 6 USB (4 in the back panel and 2 in the front panel) none of them work. According to my friend they were working before, there is not thing wrong with the board. After I put a PC together with this board, everything, except the USB works just fine. I checked the BIOS, USB  LEGACY Emulator is set to disable and I went to the device manager, it didn't complain, everything SEEMS to be normal. What am I missing here? BTW, I use Win2K Pro.

MacPCDownload, unzip & install Everest to find out EXACTLY what components are in it.
Select a quick report in plain text & post it up for all to see.
http://www.comcen.com.au/~fed/everest.zipOh, I wasn't being too precise. Here's more details, when I plug in a USB card reader, the green led on the reader lit up, so it is getting power from the USB port and when I plug my camera in, the camera says initiating connectin and will not go any further.

Solve : .lnk shortcuts when drive letter is unknown?

Answer»

I have a thumb drive that holds a collection of programs.
When I use the thumb drive at my school the drive letter (x:\)
changes from comp to comp. (all WinXP)
I can easily write a AUTORUN.inf with custom right click menu, but
can I make a .lnk for the program I want?
I already tried  "%CD%\winrar\winrar.exe"  (in the case of winrar),
but it doesn't work.
Also  "\drive\drive_progs\winrar\winrar.exe"  neither does this.
Any suggestions?

ThanksYou can change the drive letter for the removable drive to the same letter (for example, drive Z:) on each computer:

Right-click My Computer
Select Manage
In Computer MANAGEMENT, select Disk Management
Right-click the removable drive
Select Change Drive Letter and Paths
Click the Change BUTTON
Select the drive letter in the list
Select OK and OK
Close Computer Management and restart your computer

Solve : CD-Rom drive not detected?

Answer»

I have a compaq presario model 7471  running windows 98 se that I received second-hand. Recently, I used the compaq quick restore cd to restore the opc to the manufacturer's state. After doing so, I attempted to use the cd-rom drive only to receive a message stating that no cd-rom was detected. I also received another message stating no scsi host adapter was found.

How can I restore the cd-rom ? I've checked the device manager listings and there's no cd-rom listed in device manager. Why windows isn't detecting the cd-rom is a puzzle to me. I'm a NOT tech head so please keep it simple !TAKE a look on that Compaq CD for Atapi drivers...you might have to copy them to floppy and or e-mail them to the machine.

I'll give that a try ! A friend told me that it's possible the connectors have become loose. He suggested that I open the case and reseat the cables as they may be loose.
Always the first step for any hardware malfunction. However if you loaded Windows with that drive......

Solve : shutdown lasts for ever?

Answer»

ok last night i turned of my computer start>turn of computer

i then went to sleep and woke up the next day. my computer is still shutting down. i see the blue screen "windows is shutting down"

i waited a while still nothing so in the end i had to switch the power of for the computer.

why did this happen and what can i do to fix it. thanks in advance for any help. How long has this slow shutdown been a problem?  Has shutdown time been gradually getting longer or is this a rather sudden development?

A Google search on slow computer shutdown YIELDS a lot of info.  it is quite sudden
I sometimes GET that... not SURE if I've had it on my new computer though. I've noticed a lot of computers tend to take a long time shutting down, especially if you've SHOCK done SOMETHING with your computer... no wonder PEOPLE are just keeping their PCs on and wasting power.

Solve : Strange key in WinXP registry keeps crashing reged?

Answer»

:-?
I've recently solved a problem with my WinXP system, because it was constantly restarting, by restoring - extracting the kernel32.dll file from my installation disk through recovery console. The computer is working normally again, but, as I was cleaning some OBSOLETE keys from the registry, to keep it up in good shape, I've discoveder a strange registry key - when I click on it, the "regedit" just stops responding and I have to close the program.
The strange key is listed as:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Monitorizare"
Right underneath this key is another one
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MonitorizarePID" - on this one I can click, but it shows just a BUNCH of lines with numbers like:
"00000004"=""
"000002EC"=""
"00000330"=""
and so on.
I don't have a clue what this keys could be and to which program are they reffering,  does enybody?
Although my computer works fine now, it's just annoying to know that the "regedit.exe" will hang again if I click on this "Monitorizare" key. Could it be that this is a leftover of some blocked spyware or trojan?
I run BitDefender antivirus, and I didn't have a problem with viruses or trojans for the past couple of years - at LEAST not that I was AWARE of it.

Thanks for any help.
VesperaThis is what i found on a Google Search, it made little SENSE to me,

http://www.justiceinitiative.org/db/resource2?res_id=101951

And you know what i do To this that don't make sense to me and are for some reason on my Computer?

I Delete Them Till They don't no make no sense no More.

If ever i find some thing that seems to Be Crashing my Computer at any point , and its not part of the system , I delete it

Playing in the registry has caused a lot of heartache. That's why you should ALWAYS back it up first if you plan to be adventurous.

Solve : Win ME ~ The case of multiple HELPCTR files?

Answer»

:question
Has anyone experienced in Windows ME (because I understand this can occur in XP) multiple instances of HELPCTRs opening.
You only know they are there, because nothing SEEMS to work very well. Looking in the CLOSE PROGRAM box reveals many instances of this open. They usually occur when the computer is left alone for a while. (Perhaps it's bored?)
At the same time a win management app opens. (Sorry forgot it's name.)

I read once someone getting this, but it actually opened the many instances of the HELP screen, which was caused by a sticky key on the keyboard.

When I do a SEARCH in the Windows folder, there are several VERSIONS of HELPCTR there. How many do I need?

 [smiley=undecided.gif]
Fruitless scouring of MS for this as they have abandonded ME.

I also remember having to plead with MS for a patch to correct another anomoly with ME, which was thousands of empty files in the INF folder, which were CREATED when installing new HW.  I have the patch if anyone needs that one. [smiley=wink.gif]
