Solve : some sort of problems?

Answer»

This is the situation:

My pc in the House (no internet, not possible) Have 2 accnts.
Me as Admin with passwordand the other user is my wife with password also.
If it is playing WMP it will not get to screensaver (thats fine)

The problem is (if it is problem):
When the pc is turn on and not using it will go to screensaver on the time set.
But when i want to use it back (move the mouse) it will go to the starting window, and i must click my account and enter my password (log on) again to go back to normal windows. how can i stop that and i must not need to log on again without turning of screensavers?

Thanks in advance

Infoseeker...

In your original post you wanted to turn off the password protection...now you want it back on...

Be advised...you are not password protecting your screensaver, but your LOGON when Windows resumes from the screensaver mode.

If you want to password protect your computer after the screensaver has started...do this:

1) Go to "Display Properties".
2)  Click the "Screensaver" tab.
3)  Click the "Power" button.
4)  Click the "Advanced" tab.
5)  Check the box that reads "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby".
6)  Click "Apply" or "OK".
7)  Then check or un-check the box that reads "On resume, password protect".

That last box will determine whether or not you want to password protect your computer when it resumes from the screensaver mode.

Solve : Resolution problems...?

Answer»

Hi, I've been having resolution PROBLEMS of late. Whenever I try to change resolutions to a smaller set, it resizes my screen to that size and cuts off the rest of the screen. So what I get is a box which is my screen surrounded by black. I also can't move my mouse out of this box.

There's an idea, I can't move out of the screen limit.

Whenever I try to boot up a game like Starcraft it also does this by making Starcraft a confined space. It USED to FIT my whole screen but it doesn't ANYMORE. I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.I would try re-installing your video drivers for starters..

And check your monitor specs from the manuf. website to see what resolutions it will support.

patio.   8-)Is this a laptop or LCD monitor?

Solve : mini scroll bar??

Answer»

I am trying to find out what this device is called and how do I stop it from appearing.  It is a TINY, grey-colored version of the scroll bar in Windows XP and it apears (seemingly randomly) while I am moving the pointer in the regular scroll bar and will cause the web page (or Word document) to move very quickly up or down.  I have also seen it appear anywhere on a webpage where I have the cursor and in these INSTANCES, it will be horizontal or vertical (unlike the one on the scroll bar which only works vertically).  I have gone to the control panel and LOOKED under "mouse" but cannot find it.  Also, it may be important to note that I'm using a laptop with a touch pad so I don't know if this object appears on a desk top.  I have never seen it before on my desk top computer at work and am trying to find a way to disengage it but have been unsuccessful, probably because I don't know what it's called.  CAN ANYONE HELP ME?!   Do you know whether the touchpad on that laptop, in fact, has a scroll feature?  I have limited experience with laptops but I have recently had some use of a Gateway laptop which has a specific scroll feature on the right side of the touch pad.  On a few occasions, I discovered that I had accidentally touched that part of the touchpad and activated the scroll feature.  At first, I was not sure what was going on, but eventually realized what had caused the surprise behavior.  Soybean:
I'm not sure.  I just tried that an it may in fact be the case.  How would I find info to turn it off? If you look carefully at the touchpad, does it appear to have more than just than touch area and the left and right mouse button functions?  I believe you should see something along the right side or bottom edge of the touchpad for vertical or horizontal scrolling, if it has that feature.  And, if your touchpad does have scrolling features, I think you need to take a closer look at your Mouse Properties in Control Panel.  This may help: Laptop Scroll Touchpad

By the way, exactly what model is that laptop?Soybean, you have all the answers!  I went to the webpage you provided and the only thing different on my laptop (a Toshiba Satellite L25 SERIES) is that I don't have a "gestures" tap in the Mouse settings (the webpage user appeared to have a Dell).  But your answer seems to totally work.  I notice that the scroll only appear when I'm at the extreme right edge or the bottom edge.  Since I can't figure out how to disable it, I'll just avoid those areas.  I've tried for the last 3 days to figure out what this was.  Thanks, Soy!If it's Synpatics-based: Control Panel-->Mouse-->Device settings.  Click "settings".  Options are under "virtual scrolling".Thanks  million, Rob, that was the answer!!  I would have never figured this out!

Solve : Windows Explorer Icons?

Answer»

I have a question regarding my HP Pavilion desktop with XP SP2.  A few weeks ago I had a nasty problem and resorted to doing a full system recovery.*  This fixed my problem, and with a lot of work, I finally have pretty much my entire PC back to how I like it.  But an annoying change has occured in Windows Explorer.  Whenever I delete a program now, the icon representing that program does not disappear from the window.  Now, I have to right-click the window, and choose refresh to get the icon to vanish and verify that the program did in fact delete.  I never used to have to do this; before, the icon would vanish automatically as soon as the delete process was complete.  Is there a fix for this?  Perhaps a setting or something I am not finding?  Thank you to all who take the time to respond.

* I am referring to the HP recovery tool that takes the PC pretty much all the way back to the day it came out of the box from the store.  How do you normally "delete a program"?I should try to learn to use more precise terminology whenever I ask a question.  It was my mistake to use the word "program" in such a generic sense.  I uninstall programs using Control Panel > Add Or Remove Programs.  I'm actually referring to files and folders that I download and then decide I don't want; things like that.  I realize that there is a difference, and I apologize for any confusion.  Well, give this a try.  Download CCleaner and do some disk cleanup and register cleanup with it.  Then, see whether your system behaves any differently.I've had CCleaner for quite some time.  I use it regularly.  Thank you for the tip, though.  Not a fix for your current dilemna however i highly recommend Total Uninstall...

Run it when you install an app and it records any and all changes to your setup during the install process...

Uninstalling becomes quick and painless.

http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/index.html

patio.   8-)But, patio, he's not talking about programs he has installed.Understood....read the first sentence of my post.

patio.   8-)Thanks for the reccomendation, patio.  I checked it out, and REALIZED that I already have two programs quite similar:  System Restore and Acronis True Image.  Different methods, perhaps, but essentially same results.  So far, it looks like I'm stuck with this one.  Certainly not fatal, but I bet a lot of us know how it can bring the curiosity in us out, when something changes and we can't figure out why.  It is actually not like System Restore nor True Image...

System Restore will roll your system back to a prior date...

True Image creates an image of your entire HDD and can restore it to the state it was in at the time of the image creation.

Total Uninstall is designed to monitor each program you install and make it painless to remove any and all remnants of that program should you decide that it did not suit your needs...

patio.   8-)Yes, I agree that I can see how that could be handy if one wanted to uninstall a program that was installed before even other programs were installed.  However, I only install and evaluate thoroughly one program at a time.  Also, from the way the Total Uninstall description reads, it would be of no use for all the programs that are already installed.  I've had my PC long enough now that the installation of a new program that I don't already have is a rarity.  Besides, I like to think that I have become fairly skilled at making sure most programs that I don't want anymore are COMPLETELY removed.  I consider it practice; I don't really want a tool to do it for me!     Quote

Besides, I like to think that I have become fairly skilled at making sure most programs that I don't want anymore are completely removed.  I consider it practice; I don't really want a tool to do it for me!

So, do you LAUNCH regedit and search through Windows Registry for remaining entries after you uninstall a program?  I guess I'll call that commitment.  LOL
I've been known to.  Really.  Although for that, 99% of the time, I just rely on the registry cleaner scans that I run from time to time.  However, I've only recently learned that some experts agree that this isn't really necessary. We learn as we go.  I already bought the registry cleaner some time ago, having been convinced at the time that it was necessary to "maintain performance".  I have it; may as well use it, provided that I do so carefully!  (It does make backups, so any deletions are fully reversible.)  I notice that every time that a reply is made in this thread, it is moved back to the top of the list.  I FEEL as though I'm being rude to those who have real problems.  This conversation, while enjoyable, is not answering my original question.  Unless someone has yet to share any thoughts regarding that, would you be offended if I were to politely request that we drop this?  Thank you, soybean.  You are not being rude at all...the reason a thread winds up on top is because it is active and being responded to,,,

As to an answer to your original question newer programs tend to write things to anywhere they see fit and do not disappear as did OLDER programs...

It gets harder and harder to remove traces of new programs as time goes on, hence my suggestion.

Solve : XP Boot to Black Screen?

Answer»

OK have looked, honest!

Have a desktop, 3Ghz P4, 1024, twin 120Gb, Radeon X800. Networked to the one I'm on now!

Has decided to boot through to XP logo screen, with normal running blue bar, then about the time the desktop should appear........black screen.

Boots into XP desktop OK via F8 Safe Mode, even with network ACTIVE and working if that option chosen, but then I can SEE nothing amiss, nothing saying it has an issue in Device Manager.

Tried reverting to previous System Restore point...same.

Tried repair installation from CD......same (well nearly, now also left menu option to installation in boot menu.............SIGH!).

Just once on boot it indicated that hal.dll was corrupt............and in case it was getting masked at other times, I extracted/copied it from CD...same........

Had spare blank HDD, so fitted that removing HDD with old XP install completely, but won't install new to this drive either, same black screen.

Thinking possibly graphics, have tried to reinstall the Graphics Card drivers, but installation fails.

It's sitting there right now, in safe mode, back with original HDD, taunting me with it's rubbish resolution..............

Any thoughts please guys??

bravedanuk ........ Do you have the original install/Restore cds which came with the pc thats acting up or or you using something else ?

dl65  Thanks for reply........

I have a OEM product recovery disk, but also have an unused (freshly broken out of MS Box packaging for this test) XP install disk, have tried both, starting with the OEM supposedly "matching" disk  (apart from NUMEROUS Windows Updates of course).

Should have said (sound of wrist being slapped) that OS is XP PRO.

Both install disks do the same thing, appear to start off OK, and then freeze.

To be honest, I'd quite like to install the NEW 250Gb SATA HDD as c:, which removes the old XP completely (?) and start with a new clean XP install to it...and keep the old 120Gb D drive (where most of my active data resides anyway).

I'd keep the the old c: available as a BACKUP to plug in on a spare SATA line if I found that any old files were required...............

But it won't allow me to install to the blank drive.......I have run the WESTERN Digital prep prog on it, but XP install freezes. ( I have done this before on another PC, so it's not the first time I have installed a HDD, but it is the first SATA type computer install)

DaveRestore CD's may not work on a new hard drive if some soft of hidden recovery partition is needed. Some maker's do this, unfortunately.

Let's make this a simpler proposition. There are too many variables. How about disconnecting for now EVERYTHING you do not need - the second hard drive, a second optical drive, any add in cards - modems, etc. and just see if the machine is capable of loading Windows to the intended drive.

Solve : Whether a file was accessed...?

Answer» HI,
Is there any way to tell if a file (namely Notepad) has been accessed?

I recently sent my computer in for repair, and I realized that I have sensitive information (passwords & the like) on simple Notepad files on my computer. Stupid I know.

What measures can I take to check if this info was accessed during that time?

Any help WOULD be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
JohnYou can look in Documents and SEE if any rently used files are listed there, but that is about it. Or Open Notepad and click on file and see if some are listed there.

If they were smart enough to prowl, they are probably smart enough to cover their tracks. On NT-based filesystems certainly, you can rightl-click on the file and SELECT properties.  In the dialogue box, you will see the time the file was last accessed.  Be aware though that indexing programs (MS FindFast, COpernic/Google desktop search, etc.) will change the last accessed time.On my Win XP Pro system, "Accessed" always SHOWS the current date when I right click on a file from Windows Explorer.  So, it's meaningless info. That's probably because you're running some kind of indexing program.

dslreports.com speed TEST RESULT on 2006-08-11 19:08:17 EST:
38 / 23
Your download speed : 38 kbps or 4.7 KB/sec.

Your upload speed : 23 kbps or 2.9 KB/sec.
Fed, what's the POINT you're trying to make?
Quote
soybean.... I just compared the results between....... bandwidthplace and dslreports........ if you notice they report the fndings in differant ways , but if you do the conversion , the results are similar from both.

dl65
Well, I just ran tests from both again.  And, again, I got substantially better results from the dslreports.com site; the actual test cite I normally choose from the various test cites listed on dslreports.com is located in Toledo, Ohio.  I'm located near Columbus.  Here are the results of the two tests:

Communications 803 kilobits per second
Storage 98 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 10.4 seconds
Subjective rating Good

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-08-11 23:51:39 EST:
1375 / 371
Your download speed : 1375 kbps or 171.9 KB/sec.
That is 39% WORSE than an average user on embarqhsd.net

Your upload speed : 371 kbps or 46.4 KB/sec.
That is 11.8% worse than an average user on embarqhsd.net

What "conversion" are you talking about?  I SEE no need for a conversion.
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/results.php says my download speed is 803 kilobits per second.  dslreports.com says it's 1375 kbps.  kbps = kilobits per second.  No conversion involved in comparing those two numbers.
No real point soybean, just after seeing the fast speeds others are getting I thought I'd share my blindingly fast dialup results.
Does it cause you a problem?Problem?  No, but I think the fact that you were posting speeds for a dialup connection was needed for clarification.  Prior to your post, the discussion was focused on DSL speeds.  I thought maybe you were posting a very, very sick DSL speed.

Solve : File Properties Problem - HELP!!!?

Answer»

My problem is related to MP3 files.  When I right click on a file, select 'Properties', and choose the 'Summary' tab, I don't have all the options in the Advanced fields? I can only enter basic info, such as "Track Number, TITLE and Comments". Why can I no longer change other field that have always been available to me in the Advanced settings (such as Album Title, Year, Genre, etc.)??  Oh, and the files are NOT read-only.  I'm stumped..  Anyone have any IDEAS?? I would greatly appreciate it.

PS  -  this problem just occurred today for the very first time. Been making MP3 files for years, with no problems until today.  I tried to do a System Restore to GET this capability back, but the system wouldn't restore. I tried 3 different dates (1, 2, and 4 days ago) and none of these worked.

Thanks in advance for your help. You may have other issues. Are you free of malware? Any recent updates, other system changes? What are you using for protection? SP2 and all updates?I have the "automatic" Windows update feature enabled.  And yes, I have SP2 installed.  I ran Sbybot today and it FOUND a few things, which I deleted, but nothing major.  And of course I have Norton Anti-Virus protection installed.  And I don't seem to have any other computer problems, BUT this....  At least none that I'm aware of at this point in time.  But this just happened today and I've not had much time to play on the PC today.Just for grins try the Panda online virus scan.

These two things are mutually exclusive. What should I do then?  Do you think this Spyware is causing my problem?  Get rid of it first and see if that resolves the issue.well I got rid of these files and I still have the same problem.  Any other suggestions?  This is driving me crazy.

Thanks for you help, by the way.  How did you get rid of them?

What software were you referring to in your original post?I got rid of these files by deleting the temporary internet files and cookies through Internet Explorer.

The software problem is with Windows Explorer, most specifically "My Music".  I have lost the ability to edit the file properties of my MP3 files.  When I right click on an MP3, go to properties, then to the Summary tab, I am unable to modify anything but what is on the simple page (Track Number, Title and Comments).  The Advance tab is grayed out.  I can NOT modify or add the Artist, Album Title, Year, etc.  Nor can I VIEW these items when I'm in the "My Music" folder.  The only things that show up in My Music folder are File Name, size, date, and type.   The headers are there for the other fields I have chosen (artist, album title, etc), but the data does not appear.  It's weird.
Eh, better take a closer look at where you stand.  MyWebSearch isn't going to be removed by merely deleting the temporary internet files and cookies through Internet Explorer.  Read this: Fun Web Products "My Web Search" Removal Instructions and Help.

And, as far as the music goes, I have some music on my computer and I also can NOT modify or add the Artist, Album Title, Year, etc. via Windows Explorer.  So, I'm very skeptical that that can be done via Windows Explorer.

Edit: I do not see a way to do it even with Windows Media Player.  I can do such tasks with with the software that came with my mp3 player.

Solve : shortcuts changed targets?

Answer»

Dell GX240 tower
Windows XP Pro
Pentium 4 processor

Last night, without a user, All the shortcuts for firefox got changed to shortcuts for remote shutdown.  I discovered this this morning attempting to launch firefox from the desktop shortcut.

CHKDSK found nothing, VirusScan found nothing.

Command prompt does not recognize firefox as an operable program.

Please help me figure out why the shortcuts changed.I'm running panda now and will post results.Find the actual firefox exe file and try it. You can only use the DOS command prompt to run DOS programs!okay. firefox still works. . .

BUT WHY DID ALL THE FIREFOX SHORTCUTS CHANGE TARGETS? No idea. What did the virus scanner say?virus scan found nothing. Panda still scanning.  Do i need to post nore info for you guys?  The firefox shortcuts all changed targets----to the SAME target (remote shutdown)panda just finished. it found nothing. nothing at all. :-?Delete the existing FireFox shortcuts including the quick launch and tray ones if you have them.
Create new ones by using Windows Explorer and right clicking the FireFox.exe file...
Did you happen to grab the latest FireFox update ? ? I've read of some glitches but according to my research this was not one that was reported...
There is a new update released today as well go ahead and grab it.

How do I makesure they don't all turn into shutdown shortcuts again? And WHY did they change?System Tray and Quick Launch = right clik and select Delete...

As to why they changed i have not a clue...do other PEOPLE use this machine ?
Did you have an improper shutdown ?
Have you ran all malware protection programs other than the 2 you mentioned ?
Are you running low on disk space ?

The list as you see can grow quite rapidly.

Let us know.

patio.   8-)Not improper shutdown.

May run Adaware and spybot.

I was the last one to use it last night. . .and as far as i know, the first to use it this morning.  Maybe a friend did it as a trick? Although if that's true, shame on him, I'd've MADE the shortcuts all go to hardcore porn sites. Muwahahaahaha.probably.  since adaware and spybot both came up empty.

DLoad and update and run Ewido...

Solve : logonui.exe problem?

Answer»

thanks to a patching error, it would seem that the file 'logonui.exe' has been made CORRUPT.... i think. it gets as far as 'Windows is starting up...' and stays there.
I've put in my windows disk during START up, and gone to the recovery section, but not very farmiliar with DOS command lines. I've FOUND the file in system32, but i have no idea how to repair or replace it.

Any help is welcome,

Regards,
Luke mylogon341...Perhaps you could provide a wee bit more info ........ for example what were you patching ?
It's the WEEKEND so the resident mind reader has the next two days off.

dl65

yea, ok. well, i was trying to activate windows but it came up with the 'too many times' thing, and so i THOUGHT '...bugger' so i thought id get a patch
long story short, it said it didnt recognise the file type, but it could help tweak it to make something faster (i only saw this the 2nd time round. i was OK frantic the 1st time and it didnt help, so i went back and read it) after a while of dissapointment, i rang up microsoft and they gave me the 200 digit code to tap in. later on, after some installing, i was prompted to restart.

and the rest is history..
thanks

Solve : Your Windows XP is not Genuine SOLUTIONS?

Answer»

I posted about a week ago about my Windows XP home edtition not being genuine.
I have contacted Microsoft support (India) they do not even know what I am talking about. It was a waste.
So I want to share what I have found out and where you can go to get some help.
1. Windows Genuine Advantage Validation tool was most likely downloaded with a security update from Microsoft.
2. It cannot be removed from add or remove programs (not even by a back door METHOD)
3. Microsoft is very aware of the problem and have set up a spcific forum to address this issue.

 LINK  http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=442&SiteID=25

4. They do not seem to have a solution to fix my problem.
I have been working with them for the last four days with no resolution. However they have esculated it up the chain of techies, and they are trying to resolve the issue.
5. If you are having a problem with Genuine validation check the forum out some people have solved their problems. So far it is the best place to start.

Good Luck
Exactly what is the "problem"?  The mere fact that you can't remove Windows Genuine Advantage from your Add or Remove Programs list is not what I would consider a problem. The problem is if Windows Genuine validation tool does not recognize my software as Microsoft Genuine I will not be entitled to updates or support for Windows XP and will have problems installing Microsoft products in the future. Plus I get an annoying pop everyday before I sign on that requires me to GET GENUIUNE or RESOLVE LATER and the contiunation of pop up on my system all day long.
Also to add the system says " You maybe the victum of software conterfeiting"
The progam was sent by Microsoft the catch people who are pirating software.
But there SEEMS to be a bug (not suprising) that will not validate some computers that are running genuine software.I see you have/had a DISCUSSION going at http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=611829&SiteID=25.  Did you follow through on this advice:

If not, you can also file a specific free WGA support case at

 http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&c1=509&gprid=9860&

The support engineers there can walk you through that by remote assistance as well.

Yes, I have also sent an e-mail to their support engineers and am waiting for a response. I read the post by AEJ who was could not even log on. Finally got a Michelle  who is a WGA Manager involved. I put my link  so they  could read the whole thread.Well, thanks for sharing your experience on this issue with us.  Obviously, it has been a frustrating ordeal for you and apparently for a significant number of Windows users.  Keep us posted on how it turns out.  fsuwolf and soybean...

I am in agreement when you state that others are having this issue with WGA validation, however, the problem usually occurs when someone is using Windows software on more than one computer...or a product code that has already been validated.

Most of the time on a "clean" install...from a Windows XP cd (that is not OEM) you will get the prompt for validation.  If Windows cannot validate, you'll be given the option to call for validation...where you'll be asked if it is a retail or OEM version and the reason why you are having issues with validation.  If the reason is acceptable, Microsoft will give you a validation code to enter at the validation prompt.

The problem is that OEM software is usually proprietary for a particular machine and you cannot install it on a different machine.  For instance...installing from a Dell recovery cd on a Gateway machine.

A Windows XP retail cd can be installed on any PC, but can only be REGISTERED and validated once...unless you need to reinstall the software, in which case you'll need to go through the validation process I described above.  Microsoft will give you a validation code to enter, if the procedure is followed correctly during the install.  This usually resolves the issue you seem to be facing fsuwolf.

Please go to the following page for more FAQs and info on Windows Genuine Advantage validation:

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en

Hope you find this info helpful and not redundant.Saviour,

The Windows XP is OEM and is on the computer it was orginally installed on. The computer is 5 years old, not a brand new computer. The Genuine Validation started Aug 1 2006 and most likely a bug that is causing my software not to be validated.  Microsoft  began  to send out with updates  a new version of Windows Genuine Validation Tool that I downloaded on July 31,2006.  That created a bit of confusion with me, since I had registered my license key when I bought the computer five years ago.
I have downloaded and run windows genuine diagnostic tool and the product is geniune, have also been on Microsofts GET GENUINE site and validated my software as geniune. The validation tool is permanant on the computer you cannot remove it like older versions. If Microsoft cannot get this resolved then everytime they update the Validation tool I will get the message that my software is not genuine and I will have to start this whole process over again.
fsuwolf...

Something you may want to try...if you haven't already...

I noticed in your forum reply at Microsft, that you are using the Firefox browser...is this correct?

If it is, they have specific instructions for validating Windows using this browser:

1) Go to the following page:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/RunHTA.aspx?displaylang=en

2)  Click the link to Validate Now.

3)  Firefox may not allow you to Run the program from its current location, but at any rate, if it does, instead of running the program from its current location, save the file to your desktop.

4)  Locate the file on your desktop and double-click it to launch the application and follow the validation procedure.

Again, hope this info is not redundant and that you can reply to the PM I sent you.

More info...

Make sure your Firefox browser is current and has the plug-ins for WGA or OGA installed correctly.

Instead of using Firefox for validation, try it using IE.Saviour,

I did download it and save to it to desktop, they have asked me repeatedly to rerun the validation tool and copy to clipboard and post on their site.  I thought about trying what Michelle told AEJ (under that thread) concerning inserting the Windows XP disc in and when I restart the computer boot from disc. but as I read further it is a temp fix at best. She finally instructed AEJ to contact support engineering.fsuwolf.......  There would appear to be 2 differant WGA tools ...being sent out ,
1 is the WGA Validation tool and the other is the WGA Notification tool .......
do you have any other M/S products installed which require registration and validation ?   It may be that your OEM copy of XP is legal , however if you have other M/S software installed , which isn't ...... that would trigger the issue ..........

dl65
Dl65,

I purchased Micrososft office from Best BUYS and I know it is genuine. The only other is window media player and it was to update to the lastest version from Microsoft. I seemed to notice the problems when I had to download SP2 from Microsoft, outlook express would not open and gave me a bad image error missing a mapi32.dll file. Media player will not burn cd's and closes out without notice or error message.  Not a virus ran complete check. Had to set my computer back to the last know working configurations. That  allowed me to open outlook with only one bad image error. For now the media player stay up and running still will not burn cd'sI can't help to jump into this conversation. My friend has a Dell with the Windows Home bundle disk. She tried to reinstall the OS but she couldn't, so she asked me for help. I entered the number on the little sticker on the side of the PC. It won't let me install it. I called MS for help and we were accused of pirating and the tech guy refused to issue a new number. How could a Dell disk that comes with the computer be a fake? After three long phone calls going back and for, finally we convinced the superviser to issued a new number. I am just so sick of the way Microsoft treats its customer. To me, the Windows OS wasted hours of my time due to its verious problem, Microsoft ought to pay me to use its craps.

Well, down with Windows and up with UBUNTU !!!!

MacPCI would think that a digital pic of the Windows CD, the OEM sticker and a receipt would be enough.

I will never buy another Microsoft product again, for this and other reasons. Linux works well for me.

good evening, I have a toshiba 225cds and it has windows 98 curently installed on it. I wish to install a older version of windows on, but I have no flopy drive, neither an atachment. I have entered the bios and the boot PRIORITY said fdd>cd-rom>hdd. I wish to clean the hardrive, but will I be bale to use the cd-rom if i do? it said cd-rom in th ebios but I am not to shure about it. Any help would be appreciated. You are asking for trouble here.  Not necessarily a bad thing, but what you're attempting to achieve isn't easy.  Earlier versions of Windows WILL NOT recognise your CD in DOS mode WITHOUT the appropriate driver and MSCDEX installed.  So if I were you, I wouldn't format the hard drive; I'd just delete the Windows installation, and retain a folder that contains the CDROM stuff.  (Alternatively, if you can boot from CDROM, you could boot from a Win98 CD, and intercept it after it has loaded the drivers.  WOrks in theory, but I haven't tried it.)

Your bigger problem however is going to be drivers for Windows.  Before you attempt this, please satisfy yourself that the drivers for your essential hardware are available for whatever version of Windows you're planning to install.

If it all goes horribly WRONG, you WILL have a recovery path of sorts, provided you can boot from a CD.I am not good with drivers in the past, should i slpit the hdd and put the drivers there?I don't have much EXPERIANCE in your problem, but whatever you do, make sure any harddrive partitions can be READ by your "new" operating system. Eg. FAT. I'm not sure if some older Windows can recognise FAT32.hm... the computer has not been converted to what the screen is tellign me...I have wonderful new! I decided to reformat and my assumtion was corect... I did not need a boot disk. The bios had cd drive together so it was not deleted. Thank you all for such help.

Have you contacted the AUTHORS of the program about this?

also it says that it is not recognize as an internal or external command, oparable program or batch file.
That's the message you get when the command interpreter can't find the command.  You need to ensure it is in the current directory, or in your path.I have the file in a winrar archive and I extracted it to my desktop and to my documents and same error comes up when I try to open it from any of those.  and no I haven't contacted the programer because he gives no help. he just says that if you open it and it closes quickly to keep trying.  a lot of people say it works fine for them, I have had this problem with other programs but didn't really need them. this one I really want to get working though.  What is it and where is the program's home page? We are just guessing about until we see it.This is the programs website. http://imk.cx/psp/wificontroller/ the program is wifi controller for psp v0.4.  It lets you use your psp as a game controller for your pc, while connected to your ip through the socketTest.exe.

Solve : Extremely Urgent!!! Windows wont startup!?

Answer»

The other day at the small business I work for, Windows seemed to freeze up and shut down on me. My boss is completely illiterate with Windows and is having me solve the problem. Windows won't start up, but when it gets to the XP logo with the scrolling "loading" bar, it just starts right back over to the beginning BIOS screen. Process repeats itself over and over. The machine does not have a CD drive to which I can reinstall the software. Someone please help me fast! Any ideas? When the computer Is Starting mash the F8 Button untill you see a Screen With Gray Text on a Blak Background kinda like dos

The useing the Arrow Keys go down to the option for Last know Good

If that dosent work Try Safe mode.
Use Safe mode with networking so you can Download Hijack this and post a log here , and we can have a look and see if we can se a problemI've tried every variation of start up, from Safe Mode to last known good configuration and everything in between. Literally nothing has worked. The computer doesnt have a CD rom OR a floppy drive (don't ask me why) and if it had either I could create a boot disk from another computer. I've never had to deal with a situation this tricky before. My boss seems to tell me that since the computer is networked, that if we can update it through the DOS prompt, then it will update itself and that should FIX the problem. Is there any validity to that? He said he doesnt know the command or what to type to get to the update prompt in a PC. Can anyone make any sense of this. I'm the only one at this office using a PC and I'm an intern who the computer crapped out on the other day...and for no reason I'm the one expected to clean up this awful mess.

Thank you to all who help. Can you temporarily pull a CD-ROM drive and/or floppy drive from another computer and install it in this one?  How have you installed software in it in the past?

Tell us what you know about the hardware SPECS.  What processor, memory, hard drive, etc?  How old is it?  Any problems with it in the past?  Any hardware or software changes made to the computer just before this happened?  Is it on a surge protector?  Are you aware of any POWER surges or electrical storms in the area?

Do you know how to access the BIOS?  Can you access it?  If so, can you find an option to reset defaults or load optimal settings or something similar?I can only GIVE you a limited info abou the size of the computer because once again, I have only been interning here this summer and havent really given the computer much thought. Its some generic brand, Main St. Computers, has a 120Gb hard drive, AMB athlon processor, dont know the RAM, sorry.

I know how to access the bios screen and i have been playing around on it, but dont really know alot of "tricks" so to speak while I'm there.

There is an extra floppy drive here that I could probably use over there, but my boss is animate in thinking that I can just access some sort of update from teh DOS prompt over there without the CD or Floppy disk. I'm trying to tell the guy that this isnt possible, and that Windows works with bootup disks for proper usage.

you guys are really helping. Thanks for the quick update. I have till 4 today to fix this or my [email protected]& is grass. Also, I have absolutely no idea how software was installed in the past, other than the OBVIOUS, that everything was downloaded from the Internet. To get a computer without some sort of internal drive is outrageous.Would it worked if I used an EXTERNAL floppy disk drive? I have very limited options with my situation here. You should be able to boot from an external USB floppy drive if the BIOS is set to recognize a USB drive as a bootable device.  Here's a discussion on this:  Can I use USB floppy drive to boot up my desktop ?

Here's a hit from a Google search on DOS networking: The DOS-Client for Microsoft NetworksSurely you can just borrow and install a CDROM drive from another PC?  Then you can use an XP CD to do a repair installation.Who there does the computer work at your business as it is obviously not your boss...

Someone had to have set those machines up at one time.

You want to choose "send in plain text and HTML.

 1. Click on "New," and enter the address and SUBJECT line.

 2. Before composing the message, click on "Tools" .

 3. On the drop-down "Tools" menu, the last entry is a toggle switch to
turn the rich-text editor on and off. If you see "Rich-text editor ON"
it means you will be sending the message as plain text (it is giving
you the option to turn it on ). If you see
"Rich-text editor OFF," click on it to toggle it to the off position.

That should do the TRICK .

Solve : Erasing a Hard Drive?

Answer»

I have one 80GB HDD that is seperated into 2 40GBs (C and D).

I want to know how i can erase an HDD in general, and also how i can erase C only, and not D, as i want to reinstall Windows XP.

Also, if i want to change how the HDD is formatted (giving C, 60GB and D, 20GB lets say) how do i do that?

Thank You.Just FORMAT C when beginning the reinstall of Windows XP.  The Win XP CD will give you the option to format the hard hard and delete or add partitions.  You can just format C and leave D alone.

If you want to resize D without formatting it and erasing all files on it, you need a software utility such as PartitionMagic.

But if you are reinstalling Windows anyway, you can delete both the partitions and recreate partitions however you like. You do NOT need Partition Magic or any other add on product to do this. That is, if you first back up whatever is on drive D to a CDRW, etc.

What is the end result you are looking for? Is the D drive full of stuff now, or just a few things?GX1_Man, I assumed he has data on D and wanted to keep it intact while doing the reinstall of Windows.  To do so, he WOULD not be able to "delete both the partitions and recreate partitions however you like".  Right?  Of course, even if this is his intent, he absolutely should backup his data before starting to resinstall Windows.Right, I got that, but frequently it is just a few gigs, and the ability to reset the partitions now, while reinstalling without spending extra $$$ is a good idea.

Backing up important data is always a good idea, because as you know, all hard drives die eventually!Oh no, those are my only options?

I have abt 80 GBs on those drives.. and i dont have time to burn 150 CDs

Im also adding a 250GB HDD when installing Windows XP again.

Cant i just use something right now, to put 75GB on D and leave 5GB on C? Then i could just erase that and install XP on it. But then i dont want to have C be like that forever.
The thing is, i still have Windows XP on my system, but im installing a new motherboard and i was told i would need to re-install Windows XP. Quote

When that hard drive crashes all of that stuff will be gone instantly. If it's that important....Just a thought.

The thing is, i still have Windows XP on my system, but im installing a new motherboard and i was told i would need to re-install Windows XP.

5 gig for C with XP is just plain a BAD idea. 10 is the minimum I would even consider, and I would be more inclined to do 20, just in case. To rearrange disk sizes you need Partition Magic or something like that. It's not free, and if something goes wrong with that...POOF! (see above)So, you have that 80Gig drive nearly full?  Is that what you're saying?  Since you're adding a second drive, the 250 Gig drive, you have some flexibility here.  I suggest partitioning the new drive and also making it the OS drive.  It would be the master drive and the old drive the slave.  Then, you can move files from the old drive to DIFFERENT locations if you want.

And, yes, you should reinstall Windows if your replacing your motherboard.  It will require different drivers from your current motherboard.  So, doing a fresh install of Windows and all the drivers is the best way to go here. You had me at the "not free", im not getting it.

Yeh, i mean 20GB. I have 15GB on C that i want to keep, wich is perfact.

What do u mean crashes? Ive had Windows XP installed at a computer lab before and D was always kept intact.GX1_MAN said Partition Magic is not free.  What part of that concept do you not understand?

"What do u mean crashes?"  All hard drives will eventually fail if used long enough to reach the point mechanical failure.  Many users never experience this because their hard drives last for as long as they remain in use.  But, it does happen for some users and their data will not be retrievable if not backed up on other storage media.  Better be safe than sorry. So, ur wrong, i know its NOT free and so i do NOT want it.Well, Track, if that was the intended meaning of that sentence, I'll admit I mis-interpreted it.  But, I'm inclined to think you could improve on your writting, too.   Quote

Solve : winlogon.exe?

Answer»

Here is the issue:
I have my computer set up so after 10 minutes, my screen saver kicks in and my PROFILE automatically locks so a password is required to re-enter. Unfortunately a few minutes after the profile locks, this LITTLE error appears: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/ionicplasma/error.jpg

The instruction at "0x1000983d" referenced memory at "0x00000014". The memory could not be "read".
-for those who may want to copy/pase the error

Clicking either "OK" or "Cancel" will result in my computer rebooting. I've checked several forums and sites, but they weren't much help. They can't seem to state clearly if it's a virus or spyware or corrupted memory or what. As of now, I just push the error box off to the corner and my computer runs normally, but it would still be nice to get rid of it. Any help would be great, thanks!
-VinceWell let's look at several things then.

What HAPPENED prior to this? Any recent hardware or software updates? What SP is loaded? All updates to Windows installed? When did this start? Can you do a System Restore to a few days ago, if recent?

To check RAM, you can download Memtest at www.memtest86.com and run each stick for an hour or so, then all together.

What are you using for malware protection?

What is the EXACT wording of the error message?

REALLY a lot of information is required to get meaningful help.Did you mean www.memtest86.com?  I'll try that.  As for changes to the hardware/software, nothing.  It has been happening for a couple months now, but time has been sort of an issue lately and I have not had the chance to sit down and look into it.   Windows is updated weekly and I am on SP2.  I have McAfee security center to scan for viruses and for spyware I have Ad-Aware, Spybot and Windows Defender.

The exact wording of the message and a link to the screenshot of the message itself can be found in my first post, unless you are referring to something else.

Thanks!

Yes, I left out a 6.

I cannot read the screenshot message. Too SMALL. That's why I asked. It's cool, it looked kind of small on my end too but if you hover your cursor over the image for a few seconds (if you use mozilla) then it should give you the option to enlarge.

Also, I looked into my Windows Defender history, it appears that something called Virtumonde.C has repeatedly come up in my alerts.  It seems that Defender even removed it on 8/22/2006.  Amazing, my computer is capable of time travel...Virtumonde.c

But i can find things if you can tell me where to go and look for them atWhy cant ANYONE help me? Do you need more information?  it MIGHT take awhile, people arent on all the time.Thank you I have just been at this all day.  yea i know what you mean, my computers realy messed up, just wait awhile im sure someone will COME and post to help ya out.Applying a service pack updates the version number.  Are you able to display the SQL version number?  You can use the management interface, then Help-->About, or >try this<.  Then try >this< knowledgebase article.

Does that help?

Please bear in mind that this is a volunteer service, and you will OFTEN have to wait for someone with the requisite knowledge to log on.  I happen to be up with one of my twins (it's 4.50am).  I won't be back online for a while, but others will be later. Quote

Why cant anyone help me? Do you need more information?

Please keep in mind that there was exactly 15 MINUTES between your first post and the second, complaining that you hadn't been helped.

As Rob says, usually someone is around but someone who has time to help with a big issue, is interested and has the knowledge...well that takes a little longer. The price to you is still free, however.

Solve : Problem with opening a folder?

Answer»

I'm really quite perplex by this problem I'm having. I'm having problem opening this folder of mine, but just this one, since every other folders open just fine. Symptoms include freezing of the opened window when I double-click the folder, and then after about 20 seconds or so, it'll go through and open the contents of the folder. I've ALSO tried running various anti-virus programs, but they found nothing. Oh, and if it'll help, my OS is Windows XP Home Edition. Thanks in advance. Quote

I've tried AVG, AVAST, and Norton. As for recent programs, I've installed Irfanview (an image viewer) and the latest VERSION of Firefox yesterday. For the contents, the folder itself is basically a dump site for my school work such as essays and the like. The folder shouldn't be more than 5 MB. Quote

Well I primarily use those three at least once a week. I also use Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy occasionally. As for the file size of the contents, the vast MAJORITY have the file size of around 10 to 20 KB, while a select few have about a hundred KB. Oh, and all of the contents are Word Documents with just text in them, no pictures whatsoever. So you have all 3 running actively at the same time?   Quote

Ah, I seemed to have misunderstood your previous question. I only have AVG running all the time, the other two are just on standby.Display hidden files and folders, then delete the hidden files such as thumbnails and folder.ini.Great, that seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks a ton.No problem.  Glad to be of assistance.

Solve : "My Computer" window  freezes?

Answer»

Windows XP Pro--LATELY when I right click my Zip drive in My Computer in order to format it the clock starts--and keeps going. I eventually get a "not responding" message and may or may not be able to close without rebooting. I have tried clicking on other drives and sometimes-not always-get the same result. I have never before experienced the My Computer window freezeing. A solution will be appreciated. Is this with a SINGLE right click only to bring up the menu? No. Double click. What if you right click and chose format? That is the conventional way.I'm sorry- I right click once as I have MANY many times but now instead of getting the menu I get clocking and eventually a program not responding message. What are you using for malware protection? Any recent changes to hardware or software? What happened prior to this? How long has this been going on?Is this a USB connection or parralel ? ?

patio.   8-)Most recent software-Kodak Easyshare. Most recent  (4 months) hardware-the Zip drive. Basic Ad-aware, Norton antivirus, Yahoo online suite. The problem STARTED about 2 weeks ago and is not something I've ever had before. I will point out that the zip drive makes noises unlike the one it replaced--periodically sounds like it starts its spin and stops. This continues as long as a disk is in it. Also my backup programs in Quicken and QuickBooks occasionally give me a "device not ready" message although the device is ready.  However I get that message sometimes when I backup to my FLASHDRIVE so...  Thanks for your time.Let me tell you what has just occurred: I opened Checkit Diagnostics and, using two disks that I have tried to format, I tested the Zip drive and on both disks I got a message "Parameter is incorrect". ( What's a parameter within this context?). Then, using several disks on which I have backup data, I right clicked on the drive in My Computer and each time got an instant (fast machine) menu.  I then went to Quicken and atempted to backup on the two "bad" disks. Got the message "Unble to back up to drive E" on each. One disk Ive had a while; the other is new. Is it the disks or the drive, you think??To Patio: The Zip is on parallel.I  think the drive has problems. Google for "click of death" which usually preceeds failures.

Is this a Zip100 drive?

Solve : confused and frustrated!?

Answer»

hi all,

Back in November I built my first rig.  It worked flawlessly until about June.  I haven't added or upgraded anything. The problem I'm having is with Start up. I POST just fine, but when I get to the windows splash screen it stays there indeffinately. It never loads into windows. It also freezes when I try to boot into SAFE mode. I have been experiencing frequent crashes as of late, so I backed up all my data on my storage drive, and decided to reinstall windows. That didn't work either. I boot from the CD and get into windows installation. When I tell it to continue to install windows, I get a message telling me there is no hard drive detected. I know the CD-ROM reads the disks, and I know that my comp recognizes the HHDs.  The last time I tried to load windows, I got the following error message:

machine_check_exception stop: 0x0000009c (0x00000004, 0x8054d5f0, 0xb2000000, 0x00070f0f)

I know that one of the things this error can be caused by is poor power either from the wall itself or the PSU. I live in an older house and the plugs are 2 prong not 3 prong, so I have to use an adapter to plug in my power strip. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to include all the info I could.

I've been trying different things all day.  I took everything out of the case and set up only the essential components.  Still it doesn't recognize the Hard drives.  All 3 cannot be bad.  I do have Norton Ghost.  Pretty much the same thing here though.  The DVD-ROM loads the recovery console using the emergency boot disk, but freezes at the point where the program actually opens to recovery your files.  At this point, I don't mind losing anything, I just want it to work again.

please help

Solve : Problem entering product key.?

Answer»

I have just gone back to factory settings, and have done twice before in the last five years with my PC. I have Windows ME and have tried several times to enter what I know to be the correct product key. I have entered it carefully, not confusing 8 with B, for instance.

I have tried to clear the buffer (I think that's what the HELPLINE called it) and I have gone to the bios screen to update the date and time, yet still it TELLS me the key is INCORRECT.

(I went to factory settings believing I had a virus, but I am now convinced the fan needs a clean as it switched off more frequently in hot weather.) :-/

What are my options, please? I'd be glad of any advice. All Microsoft helplines send me off to nonsense that doesn't help at all. I no longer have a valid warranty.

Thank you. And what kind of computer is it? And do you have a restore CD or some sort of hidden partition or what? If a CD, what does it say on it?It's a Packard Bell iMedia 6185.

I have USED a recovery floppy disc and followed the same recovery procedure as I've done successfully twice before.

Thank you.I'm relatively certain that WinME won't fit on a floppy...
Post as much info as you can on your machine, hardware, and what happened prior to this and someone will be ALONG shortly to assist...

Solve : XP Home Wont Load?

Answer» IM trying to fix my cousins computer, HP somethin or other (fairly new)

He BOUGHT it from bestbuy and never received software of xp for it.  XP was currently loaded by them and was (believe it or not) not working correctly.

I zero filled his 160GB hard drive (maxtor) with Max Blast 4.  Then I partitioned it likeso (C: 7GB primary FAT32, AND D: 153GB logical, FAT32) using PARTITION magic 8

He just bought a legit copy of Windows XP Home Edition    and I throw it in the cd-rom and RESTART. Everything starts going on track and it begins copying files over, and right as soon as it starts the actual setup I get a dark blue screen
"session 3 initialization error" and theres more msg but I never wrote it all down

The weird part about this all is that he has a burnt copy of windows xp PRO, and it loads FINE, no problems.

Anybody have any ideas?? Pleaseee help. Im guessing a Hardware problem, but since xp PRO loads stumps me..It is no doubt under warranty. Use it. You have done enough Case Closed. First CD-Rom would not load XP, second CD-Rom loaded. Weird!?!OK then. Thanks for posting back.

Solve : HELP: Computer is non-responsive...?

Answer»

I recently was given some EXTRA RAM by a friend. I wasn't sure if it was the correct size for my PC, so I removed the RAM to check. It indeed was the wrong size, so I replaced the RAM and tossed the extra RAM given to me. I'm sure that the RAM stick was placed BACK into the computer the right way and is FASTENED down tightly.

When I reconnected everything, the computer turned on fine. But it didn't seem to be recognizing the monitor. Nothing was coming up on the screen and instead of the power light being green, it was orange. So, I checked all my connections and tried again. It still wouldn't do anything. So, I checked all the internal connections as well. I hooked a different monitor up and got the same result.

At the moment, my situation is the same. Both power lights on the tower and the monitor are orange instead of green. The computer won't respond to any key commands, nor will it even try to initiate opening Windows XP.

Anyone have any ideas on what is wrong? Could I have damaged the RAM when removing it? Any help or ideas WOULD be amazing. I have no idea where to start or what to do. I've got a lot of work saved on my computer that I really can't stand to lose.

-Thanks  Have you checked other connections and did you take anti-static precautions when changing ram sticks?

Your data on the hdd is probably safe, slave it on another pc using the same file system.

When posting please give details of your pc especially the OS and file system in use.

Good luckThe operating system is Windows XP.

My computer KNOWLEDGE is limited in some areas, a file system is what? With XP two file systems are available, FAT32 and/or NTFS.  You are most likely to be using NTFS.  (Google for explanations of file systems)

Dos based OS's (Win.9x, ME) cannot read NTFS.

Slaving your hdd will allow you to recover your files.

I would start by removing the CMOS battery (round and shiny, about the size of a nickel) for about 10 minutes with the computer unplugged. Then reinsert and power up. It should reset all BIOS settings to default and we can tweak if needed. What motherboard or computer make/model?

If the machine was running some files may have been damaged. You will need to update Windows after this.

This is, of course, assuming that there was no hardware DAMAGE, but you describe it booting up to the point of it trying to load Windows.
Thnx GX1_Man.  I do have a real copy, and I will try that as wel as the link you posted.  Since most of our data has been stored on that pc and not the gateway, I am anxious to get it back in operation.  Also, thanx for your quick response.Let us know of your progress.

I went under control panal and to try to remove windows genuine notification (which was put on  my machine with a windows up date on July 31st) and it says cannot be removed.  Can I remove through the REGISTRY? Microsoft is telling me to TALK with vendor who sold me the computer since the software is OEM. Support help that is here in the United States not in some far far away land. Plus the operating system is so MUCH easier to use. Maybe time to get an IMAC. Quote

Linux offers you all of that and more, right now, and is free to boot.  How easy is linux to  install and will it run all and any software programs such as a Trading Platforms (which was a major draw back to owning an Apple)

It is possible it is a Trojan Horse or worm masquerading as a legitimate Windows process:

This is where the error of the math is. As 10K does NOT equal 10 megs, you need to REDO the math.

10K is what you call "very small". 10 megs is what you call "much larger".  Thanks GX1_Man, I had to go out for a bit.

Vsmon is a process associated with your ZoneAlarm firewall.  Right-click the ZA icon in the Windows notification area (next to the clock) and choose the option to exit or disable it, if that is what you want.

See this site:

http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/vsmon/

BTW, the above link is to a good site for checking out all those unknowns in Task Manager, as is this one:

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/vsmon/

I like them better than others because all i have to do is enter the name of the process at the end of the URL in the Address box of my Web browser.

Well, good effort, but poor advice I'm afraid.  NONE of the seasoned regulars here would recommend IE7 (at least not without all the USUAL caveats about beta software).  And there are lots of causes of this kind of problem; download speed is rarely one of them.

What you are seeing is an indication that a picture, video or something like that has failed to load.  It is possibly missing, or firewall/internet security software is blocking its display.  Or, possibly, your browser needs a plugin to display that media type.

Please provide a link to the page in question so that we can give more specific advice.

Solve : Windows Explorer and no Desktop?

Answer»

Yesterday, I run a spyware check and cleaned up my WINDOWS XP Professional system. I was ABLE to shut down as usual; but on rebooting this MORNING, the computer is not showing the customary XP desktop layout and features. Instead, everything is now in the folder and tree-view layout.

That is, My Documents is now the default view --and this view is within a folder. So, there's no Start Menu; Taskbar; Quick Launch; and no usual CLUTTER of stuff on the desktop. I am doing everything from within the Windows Explorer [tree-view] mode. How do I get back to the Windows XP default mode with it's desktop, icons, folders, taskbar, and etc.?Jamesmag:

It is likely the software you used to catch spyware actually removed a legitimate Windows operating system file.  I had this happen to me once when i ran a scan with SpyBot S&D.

What program did you use and what is the file name of the alleged spyware that it removed?

Have you tried using the Windows XP System Restore program to try to fix the problem?

Docpcdoc4christ, you are bang on. I used Spybot S&D and I got messed up. However, the system restore is not an option right now. My computer works -- except that I don't have an [active] or the usual desktop, right now. I'm working from within Windows Explorer (folder view) to get around.

Any tricks or ways to [turn] on the desktop and get rid of the folder view?I haven't used SpyBot S&D in awhile.  As i recall, it has some kind of an undo feature.  Can you start the program and use this option?

Solve : Cannot overwrite DirectX 9.0b with 9.0c?

Answer»

Heya, I've spent the MORNING downloading various files, all seemingly containing 9.0c, but none of them (even though it says "finished") are able to update my directx to 9.0c.

I've seen a directx uninstall utility, but that requires the xp disc, which I do not have on me. (it reverts to dx 8.1 or something similar, allowing me to install a new version)

Anyhow, any ideas how to get AROUND this and install 9.0c?

somthin on my pc just popped up saying- "shutdown in 60 sec!!
mine does that also, but did another dialog box come up that said microsoft visual c++ runtime library? The same thing happened to me awhile ago.  When that happens hurry and do this...Start>Run>cmd>then type without the <>'s.  This should stop the countdown and let you try to figure out what went wrong. This is typically connected to a Windows update.  Certain UPDATES auto-restart your computer and give you a warning before this happens.  You can disable this feature through the Group Policy Editor.

Start-->Run.  Enter "gpedit.msc"

Go to Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->ADMINISTRATIVE Templates-->Windows Components-->Windows Update.  Find "No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Update installations".  Right-click-->Properties.  Set to "ENABLED".thanks worked!!!
I also figured out on another site that while it's happening, open the date/time properties and change the year back one!! As soon as you change it, the shutdown thingy says- "shutdown in 364 days!!"The group policy change is permanent so you won't need that trick.

So I click yes, and it shows the desktop but WITHOUT the icons and/or toolbar. and then another window pops up saying that Windows has already been activated, and to click "ok" to exit. So I click ok, and it takes me to the log in screen. I click on the user, and the same THING happens over and over and over again....so yah, idk what to do...  thats SOUNDS pretty wierd. :-? is your copy of windows genuine?(as in NOT pirated) linkinparkluvr224......

Solve : "boop" - Issue of my own?

Answer»

Everytime I shut down my PC, when Windows gets to the "Logging Off" screen, I get a "boop" noise (the gentle error noise), but cannot see the issue, since the "Logging Off" screen is in the way.

I checked the Event Viewer, and under Application at the time of the shutdown, I have an entry that says:

"WARNING:
Windows saved USER NEWDELL\Paul registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use. "
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

It also sometimes has this entry:

"Warning:Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no longer in use."

The problem is, I have no idea when this started. I have noticed it for quite a while, but never looked much farther than Event Viewer.

I have not noticed any other performance issues.

Any idea where to start troubleshooting? You think this is anything to be concerned about?

PKTry CCleaner--hang on, I'll find a link to a download site. . .Okay, I found the link. you can get CCleaner here:

http://www.ccleaner.com/download/And do what with it, exactly?

PKAfter you INSTALL it, run the program. click "analyze", then when it finishes, click "run cleaner" when that finishes click issues (on the left of the screen) then click the button "scan for issues" when it finishes, if it finds anything, click the button to fix the issues.Note that the standard CCleaner download file includes Yahoo toolbar.  To avoid installing Yahoo toolbar [and I recommend not installing it], uncheck a box for it that appears soon after starting the installation of CCleaner.Just curious, what would I hope that this accomplishes? I have run CCleaner on another machine and am somewhat familiar with the program. Are you thinking that it is an error in the Registry?

PK

we want you to make sure the registry is clean.  if that DOESN'T solve the problem, we can proceed with a machine that has a clean registry. Sounds logical.

I am always nervous when it comes to PROGRAMS that "automatically" clean the registry. That is why I have never used it on this particular machine. I know a lot of people use CCleaner, so that helps, but is there any thing to be concerned about or should i just trust the program and let it do its thing?

PKCCleaner is really not as an aggressive a registry cleaner as numerous other tools designed primarily for registry cleaning.  I've used it for quite awhile and have never experienced a problem with it removing something from the registry that should not have been removed.  My impression, from VARIOUS forums, is that CCleaner has an excellent reputation for being safe to use.  So, I say don't worry about using the Issues scan, the part that scans your registry.I use issues scan and one time it found a whole bunch of issues, which i fixed.  issues can slow the computer down. Quote

I use issues scan and one time it found a whole bunch of issues, which i fixed.  issues can slow the computer down.
Agreed.  And, yes, CCleaner will probably find "a whole bunch of issues" the first time it's run.

Solve : corrupted system32 | dir system32 hangs?

Answer»

Hello!

I am using W2k with SP4.

The problem occurs every TIME winnt/system32 directory is listed.
Using command line: dir system32 LISTS all the files alphabeticaly (up to z-sth file) and then hangs hopelessly, not responding even to ctrl-C. The same goes with explorer and antivirus scanner as I try to scan system32 directory.

Using linux I was able to list the entire directory content. I found many {*}.exe pattern files, which are not listed by dir under windows before it hangs. So I believe those are the problem. Unfortunately, I am unable to remove those files.

Same goes with safe mode windows.

Could anybody please help me? I don't like the idea of reinstalling the whole stuff.

Thank youThis is so FUBAR'ed you are probably looking at a reinstallation, which is not a bad thing.

Are you sure you are malware free? What HAPPENED prior to all of this?
Maybe. I have two antivir programs (which is likely not a good idea) running and a firewall (AVG Free, AntiVir Personal Edition,  Sygate Personal Firewall). I had a trojan being/infecting long-name file "system32/{*}.exe" where * is for some chars (numbers/dashes), but it got cleaned by AntiVir. So I've got some {*}.exe empty files inside my system32/ directory.

It could have something or nothing to do with the problem.

My W2K is standing for more than 2 years now, but still, I would rather POSTPONE time-consuming installation until I get some work done.. if it is an option.

Do you have any idea what could cause dir to hang?

I appreciate your help, thank you!Just perform a Windows repair install.Choose one of those AV programs you want to keep and get rid of the other...

Re-boot and from the Start menu select Run...type in sfc /scannow with a space between sfc and the forward slash. Hit Enter and let it do it's thing...have your official Win2K CD handy as it will ask for it.

patio.    8-)
I got rid of Antivir leaving only AVG
system file check shows me a window with a progress bar that just fills to the end and that's it, so I guess no system files are damaged.

Windows repair install gives me 2 options:

2) Repair process, which tells me my hdisc is invalid/broken and then leaves me with no choice but to quit by pressing F3. This doesn't help.
1) Recovery console. Something good happened here: I was able to list system32 contents with dir from recovery console! I've found that there are  93 {*}.exe files present within this directory and I am able to delete them (I did that with 2 of them). Unfortunately, every useful dos command avaible works only on a single file. Any idea how to delete all those files quickly? Any idea if it is going to help?

That gives me a choice: either spend some mindless time typing all the names, which are 47 characters each, or formatting system partition and reinstalling W2k, which I'll probably do.

I like to learn from any problem I encounter and still I have no idea what happened and how it is possible. PERHAPS someone is enlighted enough to explain?

Thank you for your advices. Now I know about sfc command and finally I am able to check the contents of system32. That sheds some new light, does it?

Solve : Takes two commands to stand-by?

Answer»

I have a question regarding my HP Pavilion a1220n with XP Home.  Approximately one half of the times I put my PC on stand-by, it wakes right back up, usually within ten seconds, at which TIME I have to do it a second time.  I realize that my post is quite vague, but I honestly don't know what information might be relevant.  I'm as sure as anyone can be that I am malware free.  The good news is: This is only an annoyance.  But, the good news causes the BAD news: It has taken me a while to get around to researching this, so anything that changed prior to this is IMPOSSIBLE to determine.  My only guess, as a beginner, is that some update might be in process when I ATTEMPT to stand-by.  But my schedules that I can control are set to avoid that possibility.  Does anyone have any other thoughts?  Or is this perhaps normal?  Thank you to all who share their ideas.

No comments, I guess.
