Solve : Windows will not start - need help to format??

Answer»

Hello, not sure how to explain this. I run Windows XP, and one day my computer restarted after inserting a CD (probably with some viruses), and won't start up again. The system files are corrupted, and when I tried to start it told me to press "R" to initiate some kind of repair sequence. I've done everything I can till this point. I really need help.

Basically, I want to format my C: without the use of a boot disk (because we have to floppy disks). How can I do this? Please help, as I've tried everything. Thank you very much in advance for any answer. The "R" stands for the Recovery Console built into XP...

If you want to entirely wipe C:\ ( you will lose all your DATA ) just insert the WinXP CD, re-boot and there will be the option of doing so. Press any key to boot from CD will come up and just follow the prompts to install XP.

patio.   8-)There are lots of options for erasing hard drives.  Have a rummage around the software FAQ (see the link in my signature).  Linux Live Boot CDs are frequently recommended here, for good reasons.thanks for the inpit guys, I really appriciate it.

but I have had the Win XP CD in all the time - and the option doesn't seem to be there, I only get the options with Safe Modus, etc.

How can I make it APPEAR? Sorry for being so clueless.

The error I get is:

Windows cannot start because the following file is EITHER missing or damaged:
system32\DRIVERS\pci.sys

Then it tells me to press "r" at the startup.

Could it be that my CD player has been disabled? How do I check and evt. fix this in the boot menu?

Edit: Now I got to start it from my CD, and it's in the blue screen to install Windows. But when it goes along, and starts to load drivers I get this error:

The file setupdd.sys cannot be loaded.
Error message is 4.

the installation cannot continue. Please press a key to continue.

What to do know? =/Is this an original MS CD or a copy/slipstream?If it's not a really good copy, then it's a real I believe =/ Why? Doesn't copies start properly? Quote

If it's not a really good copy, then it's a real I believe =/ Why? Doesn't copies start properly?

Does yours? I mean really it is a copy or it isn't. Does it say MICROSOFT all over it? If not, it's a copy.  Fenzark:

Microsoft suggests it is a hardware problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330181

Did you recently add a new expansion card or CD-RW drive, or something?  If not, then some device is no longer functioning.

DocSorry about being UNCLEAR - it was just a figure of speech, a bad one. But it is my own Windows XP CD, which I bought along with my computer. I have a proper CD-key and all that with it.

Edit: No, nothing new hardware I'm afraid =/If you are installing Windows XP for the first time, it is likely one of the hardware devices in your computer is not compatible with the new operating system.  You will need to figure out which one is causing the problem and remove or replace it.

Doc

<--- Bets the problem is a hardware device inside the computer that is not in the Windows Catalog.

Solve : Wind Media Player won't download?

Answer»

I woke up this morning and Windows Media Player had dissappeared off my computer.   No, I don't do drugs, . .. . anymore.  Its gone, the program removed.

I have tried to download it 3 times from MSoft.  I get the Icon to my desktop, run the installation, go through all the install windows, do all the clicks,  it says Thank You for INSTALLING, . . .but nothings there.   I can't get sound or play any video or Mpeg.  It does not appear on my  ADD & REMOVE Programs list.   What am I MISSING.  Why can't I download this.  Its been on computer for 2 years or more as default.  Running XP Pro.   Any ideas ?  Have no ifrewall other than whats in SP2,  and I think I shut that down a while back.Do you get warning saying 'your windows is not genuine'? :-/Yes, many.  I shut them off about 3 weeks ago.  So they're going to steal it back, piece by piece ?If your Windows was found to not be genuine and it is then you need to resolve this issue at MS's website...

If your Windows was found to not be genuine and it isn't you still need to resolve this issue...

patio.   8-)And what does that have to do with Media Player not downloading,  or why its gone after 3 years. ?   Why do they bother going thru all the steps and windows  to download if that is the case.    Why don't they just shut down the whole program. ?  I really don't think that is the issue here.   Anybody ELSE  I WOULD try downloading from a different site like here : http://www.oldapps.com/windows_media_player.htm

I'm taking it that you copy is genuine? No,  its counterfeit,  along with 5 million others.   I did a System Restore and its back.  All is well. Thx.We are not questioning your scruples...we are just trying to narrow down the parameters of the problem...

patio.   8-)

If you're legit there's no reason to take it out on us for asking...

Solve : Applications crash in XP?

Answer»

Hello,

I have two applications that keep crashing in XP Home.  One is java-based TrendMicro Housecall, the online virus scanner.   The other is a (probably C++) freeware program called Atmosphere Lite (beta 6.0).

I've re-installed XP Home, although it wasn't a clean re-install.  I just installed over the old settings.  I've also run RegCleaner.  Neither helped.

Can anyone think of anything that might work?

Thanks! Quote

An "over the top" or "dirty" install certainly doesn't solve ALL problems and can sometimes add new ones. I amsure a real formatting and install would fix it, but not clear if you want to go that far. How big an issue is that to you?GMan is talking sense.

One quick fix you might try is to temporarily disable the Windows firewall:

1. Click Start > Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Firewall.
3. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, select Off and select OK.
4. Try the online virus scan once more.
5. When finished scanning, turn the firewall back on.

DocThanks for the suggestions.  I've even tried killing a bunch of processes just to see if it would make a DIFFERENCE.  No luck. Unfortunately, I'll probably need to perform a new install.  It's going to cost time, but oh well

Solve : "DNS suffix - domain_not_set.invalid"????

Answer»

i have a windows xp. i went to "start", "run", "cmd", then i type in "ipconfig/all". So then it gave me a list. And what bothers me is "DNS Suffix Search List......:domain_not_set.invalid" under WINDOWS CONFIGURATION. Then under Ethernet adapter Wireless connection, "Connection-specific DNS suffix..: domain_not_set.invalid"

this issue have been giving me a major headache. HOw can i resolve this problem?  :-/What exactly is the problem? That is reports something is invalid? Does it still work?  the INTERNET work fine but the "domain_not_set.invalid" is preventing the DNS server to work. i mean, because if it was valid, then the DNS server would show two IP but in this CASE, it only show one and it appear to be INCORRECT.

thus, it's preventing me to forward my ports (i think) --so people CANT connect to me on mIRC and i cant send files   <-- i dunno if it's related to the DNS suffix or not but I still want to fix this problem. please help!!!Are you behind a router? They can prevent such things.yes, i am behind a router. if it deal with the router, so then, how can i fix it?it sounds like your Computer name is not Setup, or your Domain your Connected to is not Registering it properly.

Try Renameing your Computer , then check the Error again

Also you can Manualy Enter the Dns Suffix , under Advanced in TCP/IP prperties, under the DNS tab
This should be Automatic, But you can set it your Routers DNS Suffix,
EG if your IP was 69.230.118.71
Resolved 69.230.118.71 to ppp-69-230-118-71.dsl.scrm01.pacbell.net
ppp-69-230-118-71.dsl.scrm01.pacbell.net would be your DNS Suffixthanks. i got it fix.

Solve : page file error?

Answer»

I've GOT a system (Win2000Pro SP4, 1G Crucial Ram, PIV 3.0g Intel CPU, 80 Samsung hdd, Asus P4s800 mb) that the page file can't be resized because there isn't enough room on the hard drive. I KNOW this not to be true because the drive has at least 60g FREE space.   It's also running Norton06    I just replaced the motherboard last Friday (exact replacment from Asus as it was under warranty).

Here are some of the remedies I've found doing a Google search:

The page file has become corrupt, possibly at a bad shutdown. In the Virtual Memory settings, set to “No page file,” then exit System Properties, shut down the machine, and reboot. Delete PAGEFILE.SYS (on each drive, if more than just C:), set the page file up again and reboot to bring it into use.

By default, the Everyone GROUP has Full Control permissions on an NTFS volume. This permission might have been removed to provide additional security. Individual accounts, such as the Administrator account, may have been added. However, the Everyone group includes the System account. Removing the Everyone group without adding the System account as an individual account renders the paging file unusable.

Open Control Panel - System - Add/Remove Programs and look for an entry
for the Intel Application Accelerator.  If it is listed then select it and
click on Add/Remove to uninstall it.  Reboot the computer and your problem
should be resolved.

One other suggestion was that Norton LiveUpdate could be causing the problem.  I'm very tempted to remove NAV altogether and put on AVG (my fav)  ;D

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Alan <><  :DOn the My Computer, right click your harddrive and click properties. On the tools, perform error checking AND defragmenting. On error check, scan for bad sectors will take a long time, so don't do it first time round, then if problem persists perform it with this option enabled.

Then undertake the first suggestion. If the computer doesn't reboot after removing the pagefile, start in safemode. That is, press F8 REPEATEDLY as your computer starts up.Thanks Neil.  I put the Security account on the C:\ and that fixed the problem.

Solve : Corrupt Microsoft Word. ~$?

Answer»

Posted this once or tried to and lost the lost. So I'll try again.
 Hi,
I am a complete NOVICE.
I have several corrupt files and documents with the following symbols
~$ with the rest of my file name
~WRL with rest of my document name.
Please can someone advise me how to recover these very important files and documents.
I have followed Microsoft advice and couldn't get any further after clicking on RUN and typing in
"C:\ProgramFiles|MicrosoftOffice\Office10\Winword.exe" /a
a box with a red cross popped up and wouldn't let me go any further.
Please can someone help me to recover these vital files.
I didn't know how to back them up.
Yours sincerely Mad-FriendWhat OS? Try USING all slashes instead of a vertical line and some slashes. Hi squirrel,
thankyou for replying to me.
I made a typing error just now. All the slashes I used when clicking on RUN were correctly done and I had a box with a red X come up. This was the message it GAVE;

C:\ProgramFiles refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that you are connected to the internet or your network then try again. If it still cannot be located the information might have moved to a different location.

I was online and typed in the correct wording etc. Yet I cannot go any further.
I have tried doing two restores and this did not correct the corruption.

Any advice please?
Yours sincerely Mad-FriendThe problem started when I tried to fix a problem with Word. On the bottom left corner the following came up every time I opened word "Requesting VIRUS scan". ON another web site I read a fix for corruption and did this.
Clicked on RUN typed in sfc/scannow that was when things went wrong. some files and 26 documents now had ~$ before document titles. Also the look of the documents had changed from a small page with a W in the top left corner to a box with three little coloured spots in the centre.
ON opening them there were three odd letter and a row of squares and that's all, no writing.

Some of files are vital, work that means a great deal to me, please can you help me to recover it.

in HOPEFUL anticipation Mad-Friend Mad-Friend  lets try and clarify a few things first .......
What operating system are you using ?
Which version of MS Office are you using ?
Does MS word open and function normaly ?
Were the documents you are having issues with , produced and saved on the same pc as the one with the issues and with the same version of Word ?

dl65

Hello dl65,
thankyou for replying to me.

I have a Windows XP. The Word is 2002 home edition.
MS Word opens and closes okay but I haven't attempted to do any writing on a document because I was concerned of creating more problems.
The documents were produced and saved on the same PC, with the same version of Word.

Hope this helps clarify things a bit. I have very little understanding of the technical side of PCs jargon etc. can't even get one of thsoe little smilies up.

Yours sincerely Mad-Friend. Mad-Friend   ...... ok , how about doing a little test .  Open up MS word , and type anything ..........  then save it as THE TEST and save it to your desktop ...... then close up MS word , go to your desktop and try and open the document you just created called  "THE TEST" and report back with the results .

dl65  Hello dl65,

Just CARRIED out the test exactly as you requested and word saved it fine. It opened and read perfectly.
Hope this helps.
With regards Mad-FriendTry using both wordpad then notepad to open them. Found in Accessories in the start menu.Hi Neil,
I have tried wordpad first then notepad. None of the corrupted files appear on either just a blank screen. They only appear in Word.

Thankyou for replying to me. It's almost one in the morning, my head needs a rest from all this stress. Will talk to you in the morning.
Thanks again, Mad-friend.Hello dl65 &Neil,

just want to say I have now resolved the problem. I was given this link

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q212274/

Although it is for windows 2000 I followed the instructions and it worked. My files/documents are restored and appear to be in good order. I shall delete the corrupted files once I am sure. I have also saved all my vital work to disc and will make sure I don't repeat this mistake again.

Thankyou for your help, interest and advice. It is much appreciated.
Yours sincerely Mad-Friend

There are specific instructions on the SYmantec site on how to remove the Norton virus.

It can be harder getting rid of the damage it does. Do you have a Windows CD to reinstall with? It would surely be quicker and the results would be guaranteed to solve the problem. Some people like to cobble together a solution, and sometimes it works, but you could have been fixed by now.You can use the RNAV tool from the maker of Norton AV to remove the antivirus program:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

I've used it myself, and it works like a charm!

I am sure you have malware problems involved, even though you think you don't if nothing else has changed physically with the machine, no playing in the BIOS, etc.

Of course more RAM would dramatically improve performance in a properly behaved machine, but I think there are other issues at work here.GX1..... I  think  you  are  correct  that  or  I've  a  virus  that  is  not  being  picked  up.  I  have  all  the  cd's  that  came  with  the  cpmputer  and  have  sugested  that  we  try  that  but   my  man  thinks  that  doing  that  I'd  loss  all  my  information  I've  in  my  computer  , I've  a  few  files  that  are  rather  important  to  me  and  can  not  just  save  to  dic. So  my  question  is  if  we  were  to  put  in  the  recovery  cd's  can  I  be  sure  I'd  lose  nothing ?
Absolutely not, you would probably lose everything. THis depends on the computer manufacturer and the way the system restore CD's are set up, but in any case it would be best to back up important files before proceeding.

What hardware do you have? A CDRW drive? How big are the files in question? Small enough that you could save them on a pen drive?

Who is the manufacturer of the computer and what do the discs say on them exactly? How much free harddisk space do you have?

On the bottem right of the start menu bar, look at those icons. Are there a lot? Try looking in some of their options and disabling automatic LOAD up at startup to speed up loading (but not virus scaner etc of course)

Also, when did this PROBLEM start?  Have you tried uninstalling recently installed software to see if this solves the problem? if it does, reinstall it one program at a time to see which one is causing the problem.

Solve : NEWDOT~1.DLL not found?

Answer»

Hi,

I was on download.com try to find a DVD player, beware of this DVD Central program. It has a virus.

The AVG anti-virus caught it, told me that it was INFECTED, asked me whether to heal or to wipe it, I chose to wipe. Now when I restart the PC, RUNDLL dialog BOX says:

Error loading C:\PROGRA~\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~1.DLL
The specified module could not be found.

and in another dialog box pops up, titles:  Wireless-B PCI Adapter WLAN Monitor, in it, it says

10093: succeful WSAStartup not yet performed.

Now the IE can't get on the internet.

Does ANYONE what this NEWDOT~1.DLL FILE is, where can I get a replacement and which directory does it belong to?

I use Win2000 Pro. and IE 6.

Any suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

MacPCIt looks like a program that begins with "Newdot" has a file missing. Look in your program files, and look for a folder that starts with newdot. What is it? Try reinstalling it.Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I successful solved the first problem regarding the RUNDLL issue by removing the prohram and clean up the REGISTER with RegClean.

However, the second problem still presists:

Wireless-B PCI Adapter WLAN Monitor, in it, it says

10093: succeful WSAStartup not yet performed.

Did your computer come with any disks or software that could possibly be to do with the WLAN Monitor? If so I suggest you try reinstalling them.

On the start menu, can you see a My Network Places?Uninstall, reboot and then reinstall the drivers for the wireless adapter. Depending on type, you may have to physically remove the card, install the software and THEN install the card. (I have had several D-Link models like that.)

Unfortunately you have given no clues about any of your hardware, Quote

Hi,

This computer had a Linsys wireless card once, but I took it out and installed a Netgear NIC. I had cleaned out all wireless relayed program and cleaned the registery. The Netgear BIC has been working very well for a long time until I encountered this virus today. I think I am going to reinstall the Netgear NIC driver. There is an article on MSKB about this, it only explains the problem but offers no solution.

MacPCO, btw, this machine is duo boot. When I boot it up in Window XP Pro, the network works fine.

Solve : My Documents "Access Denied" error?

Answer»

I'm running a P4, 512MB Ram, 40GB HDD (C and D partition) with WinXP Pro SP2. Something went wrong with the installation and ever since I can't get access to my "My Documents" folder.  Windows and all the other software is installed on the C drive and the "My Documents" folder and other data on the D drive. When I try to access the folder I get the following error:  "My Documents is not accessible - Access Denied".  I can't do anything with the folder, not COPY, delete, rename, properties, nothing.  All the other data folder works perfectly without any problems.  When I COMPAIR the total space of the drive to the used space of the other data on the same drive the "My Documents" folder takes up about 5.2GB.  I have already format the C drive and re-installed Win XP Pro with no change.   I have also connected the Hard drive to another pc to try and access the "My documents" folder but get the same "Access Denied" error.

Before all of this happend someone install a program call "PC Mechanic 6" to tweak the pc or something.
This program did a scan and deleted several .DLL and other files.  At this point the netwoking and internet access stopped functioning.  I managed to restore all the files that was deleted but it did not fix the NETWORKING problem.  We uninstall the "PC Mechanic 6" and did a Windows System Restore to a date before this software was installed.  It was somewhere round about here that we only realized THET the "My Documents" folder was not accessible.  At this point we re-installed WinXP Pro.  Everything else then worked fine again but the "My Documents" folder still give "Access Denied".

If anyone knows how to fix this problem, could you please HELP !!!

Thank youYou need to take ownership of the files. Have a read:

Solve : Help please!! OS is dead and cant boot using WINCD?

Answer»

Hi. ive got a problem days ago my other computer doest load the OS. when i put in the windows CD and restart it doesnt use it, doesnt realize its even there.
I tought of an idea take out the HDD and formate and install windows using my pc. worked fine untill i CONNECTED it back in the other pc. I just get the *MISSING NTLDR Message*
i use a Slave and a MASTER HDD and setted the jumpers correctly and has worked fine before.
so basicly i have no idea why it wont boot fom CD. since the Bios setup is on Default and has worked before.
and no idea how to fix the NTLDR error. ive allready looked at the article on this site. but im not sure what is wrong.
Any way please help if i dont fix my dads PC. he will interupt my WoW Playing Go in the bios, look for boot order/priority, and make sure CD-ROM is before the harddrive. Sometimes that is not the default, especially on old boards. What version of Windows?  Is that CD actually the Windows CD for the computer that's working?  And, you're using the same CD to get Windows installed on the other computer, the one that's not working?

As far as installing Windows, you really should do it directly on the computer that will be running it.  Unless the computers are identical, moving the hard drive to another computer and installing Windows will also result is device drivers for that computer being installed, and those drivers would not be the same as the drivers needed on the other computer. If you do swap HDD's from one computer to another one , there is a MS utility for helping with this

If you put the Drive in the computer that works and sun

sysprep /dif
or
sysprep /pnp

This will turn off all the Drivers for your system , and set windows to do a mini install in the new computer

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838080/
Read this, it tell's you where to find Sysprep and how to use it
Hey thanks alot guys for helping.
the issue was that it was using the HDD to boot. i DISABLED it on the Bios. and it has worked. formated and installed it. And its all back to norm again
Hate it when things like this happen :p

Solve : wireless network problems?

Answer»

i have 4 pc's in my wireless network all running XP Home. they all used to have access to my base station printer but now they can't because the base station can't find them. i've tried a few things in the "windows setup a wireless home network" and "network places" and other programs but my base station won't find any of the other pc's. it used to with no problems. my wireless laptop downstairs can find the wireless laptop in my daughters room which has a printer connected to and is configured for networking and the 2 laptops can find the wireless desktop workstation in my sons bedroom but they can't find the main base station in my room and it can't find them.
any ideas what to do so they'll all find my basestation and it will find them again?
thanks, JimHave you GOT any computer WIRED into the Base Station?

I would Suggest you reconfigure the Base station to have no Security, and then try Connecting again,

It could be that your Antennas Burnt out , which would be a pity. Its not made by netgear is it?

Bought a dg845g and have had nothing but problems and it looks like the Antenna is shot, Their customer service is poor and wants me to go through EVERY step to CHECK it when its already been checked, Its got a 3 year warrantee but its nothing but hassle.

Linksys all the way now.

That didn't help with you original question though sorry,  If it all worked one minute and you didn't change any settings then its likely to be the base station at fault.

Solve : A user-deleted issue...?

Answer»

Erm. Hi... I need help on an a matter.

The problem began after I had recovered my computer after a hack... As I got back onto it, a user profile had been delete. I had other files stored into the profile, which I frequently used and viewed, but the problem was that it was protected, denying access to other users. As I tried to gain access, in every way I could think of, it kept denying me. But this isn't the thing troubling me. I checked my HD and found that the space the files TOOK was still there, even though the folder they were in had displayed 0 bytes. I am sure its actually the files because the 30 gigs excess is pretty noticable. So now am I force to delete the file (and how?) or is there any other way to retrieve it back?

My OS is Windows XP... And if you would like the system specs., please say so.

Thank you.I should add that I looked around alot of places for the answer I seek... None really helped.Let me see if I understand you: You had a user account, but it was deleted. You can no longer log in with that username. The user's profile folder is still in the "Documents and Settings" folder. You can't get into that folder because you see the "Access Denied" message. The folder says it has zero bytes, but your HD is just as full as it was before the hack, which would lead you to believe that no files have really been deleted. You want to access the files and, once the files have been copied and are accessible, you probably want to delete the old profile to free up the space.

Before I go any further, how computer savvy are you?
1)Total Noob
2)Comfortable with Computers
3)Power User
4)1337 |-|><0R
5)Mitnick (In which case, you probably wouldn't be asking this question   )

If you're at level 2 or above, you might try the following:

The easiest way to gain access to a machine and subvert permissions (for administrative purposes only, mind you) is by using a boot disk with a "Live" operating system. Many distributions of Linux are known for having live bootable CDs. However, it is possible to make a bootable Windows CD! It's called a Preinstallation Environment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Preinstallation_Environment) and is a mighty handy thing for system admins to have in their toolkit (predictably, its also a security THREAT in the hands of noobs and crackers). Without going into all of the techno-drama, there is a way to legally create a fully functioning Windows Preinstallation Environment CD. Go here: http://www.ubcd4win.com/ It will require you to have your very own Windows CD, which I know you have because you woudn't post a message here without being a lawful Windows user. It's not an overly complicated procedure, but it might take a few hours to get set up. From there, you can boot from the CD and you should be able to access your files and then copy them. I'm not totally sure if permissions are copied as well (seems unlikely, but its possible) so you could copy files to a FAT32 disk, like a USB key, and that would scrape any permissions off.

If you don't have access to your Legally Purchased Windows CD (maybe XP was bundled with your machine and didn't come with a Windows CD) and if your comfortable with Linux, you can make a Linux Live CD even easier. Just download the .iso file, burn it to a CD and VOILA! Here is a list of good links that refer to Linux Live CDs:
http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=9569
http://www.linux-live.org/
http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php

Of course if you're moving applications, they might not work after they've been moved, but most files shouldn't care if they've been moved. However, if you used NTFS encryption on any of the files, that could complicate things...

...but that would be a discussion for another post. It should also be NOTED that the preceding information could also be used for less than admirable purposes, so I hope for your sake that you're not trying to hack into your sister's account and read her diary.

--Oober Noober

EDIT: You can also try the Ultimate Boot CD here: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ It's not a Windows Environment, but it's just as powerful.Thank you! That was a long read but I'm glad I got some help. I'm currently trying to work things out now, but thanks for pointing me into the right direction. I'll be sure to let you know what happens.Alright, I was able to boot up Slax, a Linux live-cd. I can access the folders and such, but I have a problem with deleteing or modifying the files... Is it a bug in Slax? Is there anything I can do about it?

Thank you in advance.Linux can read NTFS file system, which I am sure you have, but cannot write them on that system. Current tehnology is improving that, but of course Microsoft will never help a "competitor".

So it is a Microsoft bug not a SLAX or linux bug. Good for you for trying Linux though! Those files can of course be copied to any FAT 32 file system, burned to a CDROM, copied across a network, to a pen drive, etc.Oh well, I could settle with this. But thanks for all your help!

I'll be sure to support you all in the near future.  Send ca$h !

Solve : XP Pro continuously reboots?

Answer»

A Pentium-4 computer which is about 18 months old died in the night, the motherboard is faulty.

I moved the hard disc which contained a working copy of XP Pro to a new Sempron computer, but despite all my attempts to install the correct hardware drivers for it the new computer would only boot into safe mode.  To be sure it works I created a new XP Pro installation on a blank hard drive in the new machine using the XP2 SP2 CD and it works fine.  To be sure I had the data safe I copied the ENTIRE NTFS partition containing the valuable data on the original drive to a LINUX box using tar.  I'm a Linux guru but a Total Windows Noobie.

On the original XP drive I tried to prevent things loading at startup using a tool called 'autoruns' which I downloaded from Sysinternals (www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html).

The machine now continuously reboots itself if the original drive is the boot drive, but I can see all the contents OK if I boot the new copy of XP on the new drive.

I'd like somehow to make the original drive boot properly again (obviously:) but I don't know how to do that.  I SUSPECT I NEED to alter the registry manually.  I've tried 'regedt32' but it doesn't appear to want to edit the registry on the original hard drive when I'm booted on the new one.  Suggestions welcome.Unlike Linxu, Windows is tied into the machine it is installed on originaly. Some have reported success with a "repair install" with the original XP disc. I do not share that philosophy and always recommend a clean install on a hard drive after formatting.

Have a read:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

Is there some reason you cannot do a fresh install with XP? Do you have a Windows CD? Unlike Linux, if that copy of XP has been linked or installed to another machine you will have to talk to Microsoft to get it fully functional anyway due to their licensing/anti piracy scheme.

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/whyValidate.aspxThanks for the reply, GX1_Man.

I've already tried a 'repair install' as described in the article but it just kept going around in circles, either saying that it had tried once before and failed, or that it couldn't run setup in safe mode so it would restart.  Since my OP I also managed to get a Linux-based registry editor to run.  It seems to work - I tested it by resetting the AutoBoot flag and then XP just crashes on boot with the message below - but I now have no idea what I might need to edit with it to stop the crash.  I'll continue looking at registry editors as I cherish the hope that there will be one which runs under XP and like the Linux one can edit the registry on a drive other than the boot drive.  I have a boot log which seems to stop suddenly after loading a parallel port driver, but more investigation is NEEDED.  I tried enabling debugging from the F8 menu but the result seems to be the same.

As I said in my OP I've done a fresh install on a spare hard drive from the XP CD.  It works fine, but to continue with the fresh install means reinstalling dozens of other software packages as well, not to mention transfering all the data.  I'd rather not have to do that since I don't know exactly what I'd have to do, it will certainly take a long time, and I'm not sure whether it will result in an exact replica of the original anyway.  I understand that if I do a fresh install on the original drive I'll blow away all its existing contents, is that right?

The plan to simply take the original hard drive (which has nothing wrong with it of course - the problem was a motherboard fault) and put it in another PC seemed to be very close to working except that it wouldn't boot other than in safe mode.  But my hacking around with it to try to get it to boot normally has simply made things worse.

I was not aware that there was such a tight bonding between an individual copy of XP and the machine onto which is first installed.  It's a shame that XP is tied to the machine which died, because it's, well, dead!  Looks like I might have to talk to Microsoft on Monday morning.

Thanks again - any other suggestions will still be welcome.

The crash message is [snipped Microsoft BoilerPlate]  STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF761C750, 0xF78A7430, 0xF78A712C) Quote

That is correct, but it may be faster than what you are doing. Do you have the original CD's for the programs you want installed? THat is usually the main reason people resist doing a clean install.

Yes it is, but that's the way Microsoft wants it. Sometimes they won't even let you transfer the license to a new machine if it is an OEM copy, because they do not support it, only the manufacturer of the computer! You may want to read their EULA for amusement. If the copy you are trying to install is already registered to another machine you will have even more problems and they definitely will tell you to buy another copy.

It's surely not as easy and inexpensive as to do this with our Linux boxes.  ;)
Hello again, GX1_Man.

You're right of course, it may be faster to start again.  I'll continue until tomorrow morning on this route and then bite that bullet.  I won't know if I still have all the CDs to reinstall all the software until I get back to the office - this is an office machine - but frankly I doubt it, knowing the office.

I've now removed all the unsigned drivers from WINDOWS\System32\drivers but the only change that I can see is that the STOP message now reads

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF768C750, 0xF78A7430, 0xF78A712C)

Maybe I'll suggest a Linux solution....

Thanks again.
Linux makes me happy!

Solve : Stoopid Reinstall Question?

Answer»

I am running the Dell Pre-Boot diagnostics. I am finding TONS of "uncorrectable data errors" and "address mark not found"s. Well, I guess I have some bad blocks. You think dropping the thing contributed to that???

Yeah, I know, I will need to replace the HD.

BUT, is there something in SLAX that will allow me to RUN something like Scandisk and "repair" the blocks??

Thanks! The drive maker would be the source for that or something like Spinrite, but it's not free there. If the drive is bad it needs to be replaced not "repaired at". Slax can indeed format the drive and seek errors, but so can Windows. Quote

Yeah, I know, I will need to replace the HD.

Quote
Slax can indeed format the drive and seek errors, but so can Windows.
Right. My suspicion is that the sectors are bad because of physical trauma. So if I can:
- "Repair" the sectors in SLAX
- Reboot under Windows
- Run a full backup

Then I can replace the drive. But I can't get step two cooking until I get past step one.

That's my plan. I know it's flawed, but I hope it's at least workable.

SOFTWARE can not fix DAMAGED hardware.

Save your data while you can, then change the drive. If you monkey around with it, it COULD ALL be lost.   ;)

Solve : Confused disconecting person with a huge PING prob?

Answer» HELLO,
I am getting totally FRUSTRATED and must not be looking at the obvious in a obvious way.
PC INFO: HP Pavilion 4445 pent Celeron, 256 mg, WinXP (iam am used to win98 not xp)

I play a game, Endless Online, 2D graphics cchat, lots of maps, but fun.
It is so laggy and so is almost every game or anything i try to do online.
I called the Cable company and asked them about it.
I upgraded to 256 cable from 182, and it moves a bit better but not much.
Then someone said ping the site.
I did, it says my Ping Rate is 8498
but evryone was amazed that i told and said they have 50, 98, 110 ect. so way different than my 8498.
So figuring I had a clue to follow to maybe fix my issue. I have been reading, lots.
Then I remmbered I had used the a IP optimizer on dial up several years ago.
So I downloaded it.
But it is different than I remeber, i see no scan, optimise ect on it only for some of the tabs.
I did a PING analyser and it says this:

TCP options string = 020405b40103030001010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 1460
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 1460

RWIN seems to be set to a very small number. If you're on a broadband connection, consider using a larger value.
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 58.4 kbps (7.3 KBytes/s) 200ms
Your TCP Window limits you to: 23.36 kbps (2.92 KBytes/s) 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 53 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

My question is what do i do with this info now? This is after I used the Optimiser and it shows I have 0 RWIN? hmm well can someone please explain how I change it and which of the numbers i use? i tried to do it in the optimizer program, but it did not change it because it still the same.
However, i am at 4000 ping now as long as i do not use the (stopservices command) if i do then it jumps back up to 8000 plus.

so yup, very confused female here that needs help in basic step by step instructions.
Thank you very much for any help and I am happy I found the site, Very cool.i have very limited knowledge on "ip optimizers", but i believe they are a bunch of malarky. anyway, with that said, do you have any downloading apps running (limewire, bitcomet, etc.)?

some malware might also be sucking up your internet speed. what do you have for spyware/virus protection?

do you have a firewall?

could you please download and post a "Hijack This" log. you can get "hijack this" from here. it is a program that shows all running processes and services. it will also allow you to delete harmful entries.

!!!!!!DO NOT DELETE ANY ENTRIES WITHOUT FIRST SHOWING THE KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE HERE. YOU CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR COMPUTER!!!!!!!I suggest you visit http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp and download DrTCP.  You can use it to change your RWIN value and maybe experiment with different values.  I suggest you run their Tweaks Test first; it will probably have similar advice to what you posted from your other source.  You could also run their Speed test.  Actually, running a speed test before and after changing the RWIN value is a good way to VERIFY whether a change in RWIN helped or not.  You find their tests on http://www.dslreports.com/tools.Yeah, 8400 ms is WAY too slow.  Instead of the PING command, try using the trace route command to see each hop from your computer to the Web site to see which one is the cause of the slow down.

For example, you might type in the CMD window:

TRACERT YAHOO.COM

The trace route results will show how many milliseconds it takes for your computer to reach the router in your home, then your ISP, then each stop on the way to the Web site.  If your ISP is the stop that takes the longest time, you can call them and see what they can do on their end.  If another site is the cause, you can do a Who Is look up on the Web to get the contact info for that site and call or e-mail them to ask why it is taking their server so long to pass on your packets.  Your ISP might even be able to do something to reroute traffic away from the site that is causing the BOTTLENECK, depending on how tech savvy and helpful they are.You might also find >VisualRoute< to be a useful diganostic tool. Quote

Thanks for the link, Rob.

i made it back, sorry.
I had connection issues and then i could not find where to reply, then went to log in and lost my pw. but im here, yes frustration is winning..lol

I  loved the info.

i wanted to post a big ty for the site to test the tracking for 1.
that was neat, and i did the test in winxp for trouble shooting a connection.
It shows passed on all but 1, that says FAILED 100% loss,
I have a screen shot of it. can that be the problem or not?
On high internet ping, I am looking at these things causing it:
my pc ( higher that and  many on the same server ,same time)
my internet- they say it is not their server, upped me from192 to 256, same problem.
the game server (other ppl connected and not having lag, their ping is ar 16-100ms. mine was 30,000 last night.
can it be my modem? i changed the cable, upped internet, got ip optomozer. no luck.
Will go get the highjackthis, in one sec, hadit on my laptop but havent on this,
PS this is a pretty new install of winxp on a clean drive,
I also have a file for stopservices and startservices, for gaming, as many times winxp uses so many processes it doesnt leave much room for other things in it on a 256mg.
will post in a sec the highjackthis log.
Conelamor - Lacy ;DHi all, well after going bald and having piles of hair pulled out with frustration. We found the issue, And it was nothing I was looking at. Although the pc is running great..lol
HIgh ping fixed by changinf the fan.
yup.
my on time that was the servers busy time that was also the mid day hot heat wave time. pc was over heating and how that raised the ping I have no idea but I now have a fan in the pc and one pointed at the pc in this 115 degree heat wave we have had.
The ping is now sitting wonderfully at ... 50 - 80 ms. I can definately live with that,
I wanted to say thank you very much for all the wonderful assistance.Ping problem cured by fans! Now there's a headline.

Solve : Computer shuts down after connecting to the 'net?

Answer»

My computer has been shuting down within seconds of connecting to the internet.

A few stats:  I'm with Roadrunner and the Toshiba internet box that comes with it.  I'm running an XP on a HP with service pack 2.

Brief history:  About five days ago, logging onto the internet began to shut down my computer.  I've run countless virus scanners, malware, and registry fixers . . .  I've dealt with any problem that these programs have caught.

After replacing the network card and switching the connection with my other computer, the internet will last for about 5-10 minutes.

Only one computer is affected.

I've installed both Sasser and MsBlaster patches in an attempt to deal with any worms but these have not helped.  Any suggestions?Try safe mode with networking and see if the problem persists. Quote

Try safe mode with networking and see if the problem persists.

Thanks for the prompt response.

I've tried booting in safe mode with networking.  Same problem occurs.

I can only boot in safe mode without networking.BumpPerform a system restore to the day before this started happening.

It may also be an active X control that has gone rouge. Microsoft hasn't quite worked out all the bugs in their active x controls just yet. If it's one that loads as soon as you log onto the internet, it could be causing a reboot.
Yes, that could also be the reason. However it must be fairly new other wise your scanners would have picked it up.

Make sure all of your anti-malware scanners are up tp date. Quote

It won't restore, I've tried.

It says nothing has changed since the earliest point . . Quote

If that's the case, would it be WORTHWHILE for me to uninstall/disable Active X?If you can get your hands on a browser that does not use this ActiveX control as heavily such as Netscape, you can test for ActiveX. Disabling it could work, just incase the error is not in the ActiveX you can always re-enable.

About five days ago, logging onto the internet began to shut down my computer.

Do you mean by logging on that you are USING dial-up or is it just when you open an internet browser such as Internet Explorer.

If you are not using dial-up, it is definitely something with the browser, most likely some sort of infection.

Please provide some more information regarding what you use for internet browsing, network card?Post a HIJACKTHIS log.By logging on, I mean connecting to the internet card through the internet box.

We use DSL so, by default, the computer is connected when we start up the computer but that would just shut the computer down and I'd be unable to view error logs or run tests so we've left the internet unplugged for that computer.

The problem was occuring pre-network card but I believe my sister bought the "Network Everywhere" brand.  I am currently using Internet Explorer for my browsing/internet needs.

I cannot install a different broswer because my computer will not stay connected to the internet long enough for such a task. Quote

Answer»

i just bought a new dell computer from some guy on the net. its an incredibly good computer with one problem. i cant log in. the PREVIOUS owner had one account (password protected) and also had a password for the admin profile. i have already tried to contact him but so far its been a few days and no LUCK.

i would like to erase everything that is on the HD and install XP Pro, so loosing information is not important to me. i have tried booting into safe mode but no luck there. any help would be great thanks!

i believe XP Pro is on the system btw Quote

If it was not sold with the CD and the COA you do not have a legal copy of XP under the Microsoft licensing scheme. If it fails the WGA test then you will be SOL in other AREAS very soon.

Was it sold with a legal version of XP to be included? If so, Microsoft has RESTRICTIONS on that. Did it mention specifically what was included, or did you assume.

If it was sold and just happened to have some copy of XP on there, you should invest in a legal CD. You will need that CD sooner or later. Buying something from "some guy on the net" with these limitations sounds like pirated software.

http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx

If you buy a new copy of XP you can easily format the drive and install it regardless of any Windows passwords currently in place.

If you are talking about a BIOS password, that is another matter. Perhaps you could elaborate on this and if this is a DESKTOP or laptop.the CD was not included, and i was assuming. i will "invest" in a legal CD, i thought there was some magical way i could revert it to the way it was "out of the box".  when i get the copy of Pro, do i just insert the disk in..safe mode? or what? its a dell XPS desktop

sorry i am not that computer savyJust insert the CD and start the machine. You will see a message that say "Press any key to boot from CD".

Just press your Any key, and follow the prompts.

Be sure and choose to format the drive when installing.  thanks!
Let us know if you have any problems with that, but it's pretty self explanatory.

Are you planning to get an XP Upgrade package? If so do you have a Windows CD from a previous version to qualify? If not, you will need an OEM package or the full (expen$ive) version.

Solve : Two OS on computer?

I helped a friend install WinXP over Win ME. Now when he reboots he gets a screen asking which Operating system he wants to run. How can we GET rid of WinXP? I tried system restore but it won't let me select a previous date. You mean get rid of Win ME, right?Just out of curiosity, do both OS's work? If so, how did you do that? I've been TRYING for ages. Easy, partition another drive, install a boot loader, reboot to the new partition, install the new operating system, next reboot.....choose which OS to boot into. Quote

Just out of curiosity, do both OS's work? If so, how did you do that? I've been trying for ages.
Hi folks,
Dilbert I have done it just for once. Win 2k and XP together. But at the secon boot they both failed.

I have a dual boot configuration with Win 98SE and Win XP.  I'll mention a few basic points, then leave the rest to Google.  You need either two hard drives or a single hard drive that is partitioned.  The older OS (Win 95/98/ME) must be installed first.  Then, when Win XP is installed, it recognizes that another OS already exists, and, IIRC, asks you whether you want to replace the older OS or leave it alone and install Win XP on a different drive/partition.  If you elect to retain the old OS, then the Win XP installation asks you where you want to install Win XP.  My Win XP is on partition F of my single hard drive.  The installation procedure also creates the boot.ini file that displays the screen during startup that gives the user the option of which OS to boot.

Here's a Microsoft reference: How to create a multiple-boot system in Windows XP

What sometimes happens, and apparently happened in SuperDave's case, is that the user overlooked or misunderstood the prompts regarding an existing OS when installing Win XP, and so they ended with a dual boot configuration, even though that was not their intent.i HAVE DONE EXACTLY WHAT THE QUESTION ASKS i MANAGED TO INSTALL 200 TWICE ON THE STARTUP IT ASKS ME WHICH ONE i WANT.
hOW DO i DELET OR UNINSTALL ONE OPERATING SYSTEM.

THANKSYou've mentioned WinME and XP in your first post and now 200 (0).

If you have just reinstalled all of this do it one last time (with the OS of choice)but choose to format the drive. This will eliminate this and, no DOUBT, other errors.  SORRY I SHOULD HAVE SAID I AM NOT THE FIRST POST.
i INSTALLED 2000 AS AN UP DATE  TO 98SE THEN MANAGED TO INSTALL 2000 AS A CLEAN INSTAL.i WANT TO REMOVE THE UPDATE AND USE THE CLEAN INSTALL.i SAW THE FIRSDT QUESTION AND REALISED THIS WOULD ANSWER MY PROBLEM.aLL i WANT TO DO IS REMOVE ONE OF THE SYSTEMS.hOW DO I DO THIS.i AM A COMPLETE IDIOT WHERE THE COMP IS CONCERNED SO AN IDIOTS GUIDE WOULD BE GOOD.

THANKSSee above, then, and TURN OFF THE CAPS LOCK KEY!!!  sorry
When i go to install the os it does not give me the option to format the disc
how do I do this.? having formatted thec drive? will the cd run
sorry to be thiskIs that a real Windows CD, very shiny with Microsoft written on it, or is it some sort of restore disc? What does it say on it?

If it is a real WIndows CD, you will see the FORMATTING screen right after pressing F8 to agree to the EULA and choosing to install a new version of Windows. You can choose between NTFS and FAT32 (iff aplicable) and if you want to format the drive or leave it intact. Quote
Just out of curiosity, do both OS's work? If so, how did you do that? I've been trying for ages.
Yes. Both OS' work. I thought we were doing an upgrade from ME to XP. After he saw XP he wants to go back to ME which is probably better for him since he doesn't quite have enough RAM to run XP properly. So, at this point we want to get rid of XP. This is confusing because someone else hijacked this thread which would only be acceptable in a discussion thread. You have indeed been hijacked.

Sometimes there is an entry in Add and Remove programs, but the best bet when installing OS'es is to do a full format and clean install. Your friend may get lucky.

Solve : RS-232C device control with Windows XP?

Answer» QUESTION...  I have a projector capable of receiving commands via RS-232C, but I haven'e been able to find the correct configuration of my PC to accomplish.  Please help.

I've done it before with Windows 3.11.  Very simple.  I opened a terminal window, set the baud rate and other easy settings, and bam - I was talking to the device.

What am I missing with Windows XP?

Dan
[email protected]  Found this....

"If you create a direct connection by using a serial (RS-232C) cable, the port that you select in the New Connection Wizard is enabled for connections that use a null modem."

This is for direct connecitons however, but I think the principle is the same. In the device manager check your ports. Make sure you have all DRIVERS installed for the hardware.Hoss:

If this is a newer computer it will not have any physical RS-232 ports (also called serial ports).  Most modern computers that come with Windows XP use USB 2.0 ports, INSTEAD.  Have you installed Windows on an older system?  Are you sure your system has the RS-232 DB-9 connectors (the ones with nine pins)?

If so, Windows XP still might not support such an archaic legacy device.  You can try CHECKING the Web site of the manufacturer of the projector to see if there are any drivers you can download and install for the device.  If not, consider upgrading to a newer projector.

DocThanks for your thoughtful replies.  This motherboard does indeed have the DB-9 connectors available which made the physical connection to the projector an easy one.

However with the projector "hanging" off of the port, Windows XP automatically LOADED drivers and configured port for IEEE1394 (otherwise known as Firewire) which is used for device control AND a high speed media transport.

The only information available from the manufacturer is a (very nice) list of command codes shown in ASCII and HEX.

It really was very easy with Windows 3.11.  It's been a while, but I believe all I did was open a terminal emulation window and I was immediately able to "talk" to the device using similar ASCII commands.  Maybe if I were more familiar with computer networking I could better explain what used to be so easy in 3.11 and can't be accomplished (by me) in XP.

Keep working with me.

Dan

Hey, Dan:

Yeah, just as i thought.  Windows XP has incorrectly identified the serial port as a Firewire port and installed the wrong drivers, so the operating system will never be able to talk to the projector.  If you cannot find a Windows XP driver from the manufacturer's Web site, try a Windows 2000 driver.  If they do not have any Windows 2000 drivers, you might be out of options.

Solve : virtual memory minimum too low??

Answer»

4 days ago i got an error message: "there is not enough free memory to run this program.  quit 1 or more programs, then try again."   i got message when i was composing a 1 PAGE Word document on JUMP drive.  then tonight i got message:  "Windows- virtual memory minimum too low, your system is low on virtual memory."

i check c drive & i have 910 mb free space & total size is 7.85 gb.  jump drive had 981 mb free space & total size is 9.4 mb.  any idea why i got messages above & what to do to avoid getting messages again?  i have a compaq ipaqw/ 256 mb of ram.  i run MS windows xp.  thanks! It means you are running out of RAM, Windows XP is a memory guzzler so 256mb would serve that well. To get more virtual memory, go to...

Start->Control PANEL->Performance and Maintenance->System->Advanced (tab)->Settings (in the Performance category)->Advanced(tab)->Change (at the bottom under virtual memory) give yourself some more if you wish.

This is sort of dangerous, get a good memory clearer such as FreeRAM XP Pro to clear up some memory. Or buy another memory card for more memory if you plan to run this many processes at once again.
There are two issues, both related. You have only 256 meg RAM, which is minimal for XP, and actually is less as Ipaq's use onboard memory. Your free space on your hard drive is also too small. You are asuggested to have 15% of the drive free for swap files, etc.

So you A) need to get a bigger hard drive or clear out some serious space and B) get more RAM if you intend to run XP happily on that machine.  On that task bar which is to the right of the start menu button, check the icons for any undeeded programs you have running and CLOSE them. Press control ALT delete and look to the bottem of the task manager. How much "commit charge" do you have?

Solve : No Safemode or Defrag?

Answer»

OS - XP Home SP2
512M RAM
30G hdd

Won't defragment (see attachment).  It defrags about 1%, then goes quickly thru it's paces, then says it can't defrag some files.

Also won't go into Safemode.  It stops at the ntoskrnl.exe file and won't go any further.

I've run (all updated with latest pattern files):

ETrust antivirus
Ewido
Adaware
Ran chkdsk on reboot and it found no errors

So whadayathink?

I'll be talking to him today and suggest doing a system restore.  He's PRETTY computer savvy and can do this without my holding his hand

Thanks for your responses.

Alan <><  As for the safe mode issue, check this article to see if you have any of these issues (I know you haven't stated receiving these ERROR messages, but it is most likely what is going on...)

http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/index.cfm?articleid=14722&cpage=2

As for defrag, that is awkward behavior but I have seen it happen before on windows. I just downloaded a defragmentor.

http://www.brothersoft.com/utilities/optimize_utilities/dg-defragmenter_38875.htmlApart from safemode and defrag not working, the computer works fine? That seems odd.Other than my leg is broken I'm fine.

It can't be both ways, and there is a definite  problem.I would DLoad and install DisKeeper Lite and run it...it is a free VERSION. If it will not run to completion then there are problems with that installation.

Solve : HELP = Graphics problems!?

Answer»

Well untill recently my computer was fine but i decided to play a game and during the introduction where you see like the developers short movie like  "Nvidia" and such.

Well i realised the graphics w'ere seriously screwed up, instead of it being normal like this:  (it was a CODE masters game)
http://www.konsolifin.net/ylli/upload/uutiset/ps2/1112617884_codemasters.jpg

it was more like this:
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/8868/codemasters02ux7.jpg

^ that was done in paint but it was very similar to how the graphics looked,
I reinstalled the ATI Radeon 9600XT driver, and i ran a video and it worked back to normal (before it would be all red and orange and yellow instead of the proper colours) but the screen went black and then ti came back, still normal but if i closed it and re-opened it, it would become all red/orangey/yellowy (like the codemaster logo)

Im pretty sure its a GRAPHICAL error, but weird thing is, when i restart comp, for about 10seconds if i watch a movie its normal, then after that if i close that movie and re-open it or open another one it goes back its usualy screwed-up state.

Please Help Thanks,
btw
I have 512mb ram
3.0 ghz CPU
9600XT ATI Radeon.

Thanks,
Ace.

EDIT: Also when the computer boots up, right after windows load, once i can access the desktop the screen goes black, then goes back to normal ( I ASSUME THAT IS WHEN IT CHANGES FROM NORMAL VIDEO = SCREWED UP GRAPHICS )Do you have the latest video drivers installed? Is your video card over heating? Look in the ATI tools thingy and look for a temperature reading. Mine is in the "overdrive" section.Yes i have the latest drivers installed.
And i doubt it's overheating because I can restart comp, for a split few seconds before the screen goes black its perfectly fine! so if i run a video, before the black screen, even after the black screen its fine, which means it cant have been overheated or everything after the "black screen of death" LOL, would be screwed up.

EDIT: believe it or not in this picture its actually MEANT to be a room full of people sitting at a desk
http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/2374/examplexh1.jpgSo you are saying, when you hit the restart button, the screen goes back to normal before restarting? And please check the temperature anyway. Load the gauge up in the BACKGROUND, play a game, alt tab and look. Can you test that card in another machine? Has it been overclocked? Quote

Yes i have the latest drivers installed.

Hmmm, I looked at your image and was surprised, after reading your comments, to see that, except for the video or photo that's in the center of the Windows Media Player window, the rest of your display looks normal.

Do you have any photos on your computer?  Do they display normal?

How about running dxdiag and see what happens when you run the DirectDraw and Direct3D tests for your Display?
Photo's display normally.
And even weirder, SOME video's display normal, some are just purely screwed up.
 :-?

DxDiag tests on DISPLAY

No problems found.
DirectDraw test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 7 test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 8 test results: All tests were successful.

Solve : Help with Startup?

Answer»

My friend's computer always opens a folder upon startup.  It's a Dell Folder, with media progams that are rarely used, if ever.  These programs do not need to be removed, he just does not want to have this folder open each time the computer turns on.  Also, I have attached a hijack log, and if anyone COULD give it a quick glance and let me know if everything is ok.  Recently, MCAFEE Virus Protection was removed, but I'm not sure if it was done completely, since I see there are a few McAfee things in the log.

Thanks for any help.If that was removed, what is being used for protection (and not just viruses!)?bumpLook what is in the startup folder in your programs list. And go to start run, type msconfig, look in start up tab for anything that looks like it. And get some virus protection or you'll be stopping on this forum for longer than you bargined for.cfnyy51......  Before I offer what to remove with hijackthis , I would suggest that your friend check and make sure that McAfee is in fact gone ..... I see numberous referances to it ......... These maybe left over bits and pieces in the registry ....... However have your friend check in the programs folder in probably C drive ( McAfee ) and delete the folder manually , then D/L and install a program called ccleaner .........  http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/         once its installed , run the cleaner PORTION and remove anything found............ once that crap is gone ...... Run the "Issues" part of ccleaner and fix anything that come up . That may remove the leftover parts from the registry.

Now then , I see multi toolbar entries ............. ( google ) ......... I would suggest getting rid of those toolbars , as they are usually full of spyware ......( annoying )

Once the above has been done ....repost a new hijackthis logfile and we will suggest what to remove .

Solve : Windows ME won't load?

I can't get my moms computer to start. The message says
The following file is missing or corrupted:C\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS

ALSO -
The following file is missing or corrupted: C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD

Type the name of the windows loader

This computer was working fine yesterday...what the heck could she have done to it?You can try a system restore

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsME/using/computerhealth/articles/systemrestore.asp

As to what she did, who KNOWS?okay....now it says ME...I'll try to figure it out. Thanks so much for help. Okay....that would probably help except it won't load that far. It goes through all the system info okay, the when Windows ME starts to load...that's when the screen goes black except for the error messages I posted before.I would Try a Repair Install,

just Slap in the ME disk, Boot off it ,

I'm not that sure of the Procedure on ME , but on XP you just Go Trough the Install Screens, then on one Screen it says

Looking for previous Version's of Windows.

Then it should find yours , and ask you if you want to Attempt a Repair, Press R for yes , or Enter to ContinueI do not have any disks for this computer. So slapping in a disk would be the easiest thing to do. I would love to just re-format the thing, but there are no disks. All of my new computers don't have floppy drives so I can't even make one for it. Also all the new ones have XP on them, not ME. I am going to try some things I found on here just searching around and see if they work. If they do, I'll tell you what I did. Thanks everyone.Everyone needs a real Windows disk sooner or later. In your case it appear to be sooner.

Have a read just in case:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/WinME_sfp.mspxThanks for trying to help me out.....I'm about to give up on it. I got a bootdisk from bootdisk.com....when i try to run any of them it just says non system disk please cklick any key to continue.
No matter what I do, I get the original error messages and nothing else. I'm guessing this computer is trash.Have you tried loading up Windows in safe mode? When the computer loads, keep hitting F8 and you should get some options, just as Windows stars to load. Try system restore from there?

No Windows disk. Tut tut   I know, I know....I should have a windows ME startup disk, but when my mom got the puter from a friend, they said they had LOST all the disks that came with it. It's not my personal computer and I DO have all the stuff that goes with all 3 of mine. Anyway....I'll try the safe mode thing. I am really at loose ends here. Like I said in my first post I have absolutely NO idea what the heck she did to it. It was working fine and then she was calling me telling me it was BROKE. I'll let ya know what happens. If you know that computers serial key number, I think you can use any Windows ME disk.If you need a real CD, eBay has hundreds. Without that you are stuck.

You need the correct number for the CD you are trying to use. What I am saying is, as far as I know, each Windows Disk is identical. When you enter a serial key it simply runs some KIND of mathematical function on it to determine wether it is one of the "possibilties". It's not until you try to activate Windows that your serial key is checked in anyway, to make sure nobody else is using it. I don't know the story with ME, but it's worth a try to try with your own ME disk, but her serial key, if you know it.Although I have not had a chance to try it yet, I am going to try to do a system restore from safe mode. The disks I have are floppies and I got them from bootdisk.com One is a custom and one is OEM. I'm hoping I can get this thing going. It's driving me crazy. Thanks again for all your help.

windows home EDITION its not a virus a WEEK ago i ran a virus scan i dont know what u mean with os legal windows

if i where 2 do a system restore how could i back up a program i absolutly need 2 have1) specs for the laptop?

2) what version of XP (home or pro?)

3) when was the last time you ran virus, spyware, adware scans?

4) is your os a legal version of xp?
YES you need to post the specifics on the machine, version of Windows and what kind of CD you have. Is it a real, shiny Windows CD that says MICROSOFT on it or a restore CD and what does it say on it?

Can you boot to safe mode (F8 at start) and do a system restore to a point before this started?

See below. When it starts up and there is nothing but the background...

1. Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL
2. (if the task manager shows up) in the File menu click "New Task"
3. Type in "explorer.exe" (no QUOTES) and see if it comes back.

If so, something wrong with the startup running windows explorer.

Solve : mobo gone south?

Answer»

Got an Asus P4S800 that has gone bad (boots, goes into BIOS & stays the CPU is set wrong..it isn't, reboots and dies).  Done all the usual (stripped it to video, RAM & PS.  Swapped RAM & PS, reseated CPU, even BENCHED the board) still a no-go.

Question is this: I've looked on Newegg and see that are variations of the P4S800 (D-X, VM, MX, & SE).  Does anyone think I can replace the original board with one of these and not have to go through all the girations of reinstalling the OS (W2kPro) because of the IDE controller on the board.  I'd sure like to avoid that at all costs.

Your thoughts appreciated.

Alan <><  They are probably more alike than different. I would not anticipate major problems. If so, you would have MANY MORE problems with any other solution or motherboard.

If you dread a reinstall, I would suggest a nice imaging program like Acronis True Image, etc. In case of disaster your hard drive can be restored from a VARIETY of image files you have made (bare, fully loaded with all drivers and updates, etc.) in a few minutes all by itself.

If you are prepared it is not an ordeal.  Thanks GX1_Man.  I posted on another BB and one fellow made mention that Asus WARRANTIES their boards for 3 years & suggested contacting them.  I'll give that a whack and see what they say.

In the meantime I'll look into Acornis or Norton Ghost as an imaging solution.

I'm also going to purchase some software called ISR-First Defense.  It's sw that images your hdd so if your system gets trashed by some Trojan or WHATEVER, you can boot to this mirror image and you're good-to-go.

http://leapfrogsoftware.com/

It doesn't, however, eliminate the need for a good backup image to another media!

Appreciate your comment.

Alan <><  Acronis is top rate imaging and backup software with great support for about $30 through www.newegg.com (usually) or a little more on the Acronis web site. I have never heard of that other program personally. It has made my life a WHOLE lot easier. I urge you to check out the Acronis web site.I can do that...I have the technology

Well, what processes should I be looking for?  One person at work told me to just wipe the stupid thing and start over.

Also, as I said above, the web browsers are among the programs that are affected by the problem.  I don't trust them.Safe mode+networking....

When computer boots up, right when it shows the computer comapnies name (before the Windows XP loading screen) start tapping the F8 key.

You will arrive at a menu that will have optins including
"start windows in safe mode with networking"

Try out all your programs, if the same performance continues, you have a HARDWARE issue. Otherwise, it's some program on the computer.okay, i got into safe mode with networking. . .attempting SUGGESTION. . .i foud the panda thing.  scanning now. . . Quote

Solve : Trouble with WinXP installation?

Answer»

Hi! I'm a TOTAL newbie in this forum and I am desperate, so pls help!  :-?
I have formatted my hard drive and tried to reinstall win xp pro. The pc seems to install the initial files and displays "your computer will reboot, the installation will continue after rebooting". After rebooting though, it does not continue, it installs the same files again, displays the same messages and reboots. It's driving me CRAZY, doing the same THING over and over again. I tried formatting again but it didn't work.
Has anyone come across anything like that? Please help, I'm about  to beat the tower [smiley=angry.gif]into a pulpAthena:

When Windows Setup begins to reboot, press and hold in the power button on the computer to turn the power off, wait 10 seconds, then press the press the power button again.  Windows setup will then try to continue the installation where it stalled.

If this does not work, let us know.  There are other things you can try.

DocIt does not SEEM to work, I'm afraid

Let me give you some more details.  I have an 80 GB HD which I have formatted.
After booting, the screen displays "detecting IDE drives"  then starts to go pretty slowly (it's only a 2,6 celeron but it used to run much more quickly) After a 30 sec delay it seems to find all the devices. After another 30 sec delay it displays "verifying DMI pool data  boot from cd" and about  20 sec after that  "setup is inspecting your computer's current configuration". Then everything goes black for a minute or two (not even the cursor is visible) and then the initial blue screen of windows  setup appears. It gives me two choices,  enter and exit installation.
If I click enter, it displays that there is 76 GB of free space out of the ~77 of the hdd (calls that partition 1) and 8 MB unpartitioned space. It prompts me to choose the partition where I want to install and when I choose partition 1 it warns me that there are already windows files installed and that it it not recommended to have two operation systems in the same partition. If I choose to continue I can install windows in a folder other than C:/windows or I can push L and it deletes C:/windows and rewrites it. Then it gives me 15 secs and reboots. After reboot we are BACK to sqware 1.
If I choose exit installation in the blue screen it reboots and... here we are, back where we started.
Hope you're still online Doc... It seems I am pretty stupid.  [smiley=thumbdown.gif]
I had set the HD as master (I used to have a 200GB HD on the pc) and had not removed the jumper after removing the slave hd[smiley=tongue.gif]After removing the jumper, everything works as fast as they used to... and setup continues!!!! [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]
Thank you very much for your time and your quick answer! [smiley=dankk2.gif] [smiley=engel017.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]Good thinking, Athena!  Come back and see us any time.

Solve : Outlook Address book Icon?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP, IE 6.0 and Outlook Express.  In Outlook, when I go to write a new message,
the address book icon is not on the toolbar.  If I try to modify the toolbar to add it, it is not listed in the available icons.  Yet, when I go to the "read mail" screen, there is the address book, right where I don't
need it!  How can I get this to show up on the new message toolbar???  Thanks, ChidaThat sounds odd.  I believe that Address Book icon is a standard icon on the toolbar on the new message panel.  Are you sure it's not just hidden?  If you click on the Toolbar Options button, the button with a down arrow on it's LOWER part, and display additional toolbar icons not shown on the main toolbar, is the Address Book icon there?  Do you understand what I'm saying?Yes, I understand.  Tried that; it's not there.  Tried opening "read mail" and "new message" screens together and dragging from one toolbar to the other; that didn't work either.  Tried researching how to
make a second (duplicate) address book icon, but all I could find was references for additional, not
duplicate address books.  ARRRGH!!  There's bound to be a simple fix for this, but I haven't found it.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks, ChidaWhat happened prior to this? Any recent software changes? How long has this been a problem? If recent, how about a SYSTEM restore to before this happened? WHat operating system?

As always, more details needed.   Quote

If I try to modify the toolbar to add it, it is not listed in the available icons.
Let's take another look at this procedure.  Maybe you did not look in the right place.  To bring up the Customize panel, right click on an empty part of toolbar area at the top of Outlook and select Customize.  Select the Commands tab.  In the left panel, named Categories, select Tools.  In the right panel, under Commands, scroll down the list.  You should see Address Book there.
I don't get a "commands" tab or "categories" when I right click the empty part of the tool bar and select customize.  What pops up is a WINDOW titled "Customize Tool Bar"  A scroll box on the left is for available tool bar buttons (no address book there) and a scroll box on the right is for current tool bar buttons (no address book there either).  There is an Add and Remove button in between the two scroll boxes and not a whole lot else there.  This is not a new problem; it's been happening for months.  No software changes, no crashes, no viruses, no nuttin; just this annoying little problem that's been bugging me for awhile.
Operating system is Win XP Home, Outlook Express version is 6.0.  I've tried right clicking the tool bar to get to customize, I've tried using the menu commands up top to get there with same results each time.
Let's regroup here.  The title of your question is [highlight]Outlook[/highlight] Address book Icon, not [highlight]Outlook Express [/highlight]Address book Icon.  So, which is it, OE or Outlook?

Outlook Express (OE) does not equal Outlook.  They are two different things.Wait, there is no (and should not be) Address Book sign in the New Message  window in Outlook EXPRESS, but in Outlook. You don't need it there as you click TO: in the New Message window it automatically takes you to the Address Book.

Again which one are you using? OE or Outlook bare. Sorry for the confusion.  Per my original message, I am running Outlook Express.  As to not "needing"
the address book icon there, that's a matter of opinion.  I know it will automatically fill in the address
if I can remember enough of it to get it started, but the triple digit temperatures here, coupled with MULTIPLE entries with similar names and a rapidly failing memory for rarely used addresses makes it much more convenient to have the address book there too.  Isn't there some way to make a shortcut
or a duplicate icon in Express? In your original message, you also said Outlook.

Do you not understand what Peccavi said?  You can open the address book from the New Message panel.

Solve : Drive Wont Read Disc's?

Answer»

Right out of the blue, my C drive wont read discs, music, software or otherwise, this has never happened before, before POSTING this I have run all kinds of virus programs, any suggestions? I am on Wondows XP.....
The C Drive is a hard drive. If you can't read a disc in an optical drive that is another matter. Please list a lot more specifics like what drive you were trying to access, etc. See below.See below what?
I dont understand what you WANT to know, C drive is the one that runs disc's, ect, I have a 'F' drive but that doesnt come into play here, what do you MEAN? :-?What it looks like to me from looking at the same error messages on google, it regards optical drives. Yet I believe he receives this error when clicking on the Hard Disk C drive. Maybe some new INSTALLATIONS of some sort have interfered with the drive configuration making the C: drive in My Computer lead into some fake or non existant drive.

It can't really be something wrong with the actual hard disk if he can still run anti-virus programs.

That's my best guess. Try to remember the last thing you did before it happened. Or remember the date it started happening and go for a SYSTEM Restore, which would maybe ensure whether it is a software related issue.

Solve : my computer doesnt work in normal mode!!?

Answer»

hey, iv got this computer help and now its DRIVING me crazy!!
i hope some1 can help me!
the problem is that this computer was deleted and it was supposed to be better caz some1 or a hacker removed the password or changed it.(a password for the internet umm something like that, sorry dont know that much about it) till then the computer was well fine but didnt actually worked, i mean it didnt had microsoft word or windows messenger or even antispyware. then the computer didnt wanted to start or even to work, some1 told me about this safe mode so thankfully i can enter through here, but when i enter to normal mode it logs in to the account and till it ends load, a second later it turns off, and i have to shut it down and enter to normal mode again to see what happened.
i did an upgrade to windows xp , but.. didnt work
it did the same, when i entered the normal mode and logged in, it was there for a few SECONDS till it went all out and just stood the background
so im back in safe mode!!

i really wish some1 could help me plzz!!, im soon starting college and i NEED the computer to be ok.
hope u can help me!
First of all, you'd better brush up on your grammer if you're going to college  :-/

Second, where did you get this computer from and from whom?  If it was from a "friend" I'd be looking for some new friends.

Third, if this thing is so whacked out as you say it is, and you have no data that you really need, just format and REINSTALL.  You'll save yourself a ton of headaches.

Alan <><  Well put, on all counts.  and how do i do that?By "that" you mean restore it?  If you have the operating system CD, power-up the computer and quickly put in that cd.  If the computer BIOS is set right, it should boot to the cd.  Just follow the instructions on restoring it.

Before you do that make sure you have the software for all your hardware (soundcard, motherboard, video card, etc.)

If you don't have this stuff then it would be advisable to take the computer to someone who is knowlegable in computer repair to have them help you.

Alan <><

Thanks GX1_Man!  It's been a tough week and I needed a LITTLE humorous encouragement
