Solve : Password issue?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a desktop and a laptop, both running Win XP pro and are configurated more or less the same way. When I boot them up, the desktop PC goes straight to finish its boot without ASKING me for a password, but the laptop would boot windows up then it asks me for the password in the Log on Windows DIALOG box, this is really annoying. I can't figure why the laptop can't do the same thing as the desktop. I must be missing SOMETHING, can anyone help?

Thanks.

MacPCOn the laptop go to control panel-->users.  Ensure that the logged on user has no password, then switch off "Enable the Welcome screen".  THe settings are all there if you look.  Rob, how embarrasing, I knew it was something silly like that, (sign) too much to remember and too easy to forget.

Thanks a lot.

MacPCNo problem!

Solve : Windows XP Crash (odd)?

Answer»

My computer one day began making straneg buzzing and clicking noises that were really LOUD and obnoxious. It seemed as though a lot of the time these noises were coupled by a slowing of the SYSTEM and in rare cases even freezing. My suspicions were that the problem was the fan, but I am by no means an expert.
So, carrying on, my computer went through this process a few days ago and when it froze and i restarted, the system would not boot. By this I mean it got to the point of having the Windows XP logo with the green loading bar underneath, then went no further. Since I assumed the problem was the fan I allowed the computer some off time (about a day) to cool down. I atempted starting it again, and after a few tries, it got through the boot sequence. This is where it GETS weird.
The system (as it appeared) had returned to stock XP mode with the default background and start menu settings. So I thought it had formatted itself or something along those lines. However, some of my old icons for example a few media players were still left on the desktop. So I CONTINUED my search through the program files and found that all of my old programs were still present and accounted for. I ran a test with my iTunes to see if all my files weer hiding somewhere as well, but there was nothing there. So I thought that it kept my programs and deleted my otehr files, but then I checked the space left in my C Drive and it was exactly TEH same as before. To add to the mystery there was a file in my recycle bin from before the crash, adn when I restored it, it went to its exact former location. However, none of the other files were there along with it.
It is very imjportant that I figure this problem out as I had some necessary files on the old computer. Ifg anyone could help me that would be great. Thanks, Jeff.
It sounds like your HDD is Crashing, and in that case youll need a new drive.

I would back up all your important Data
then
I would do a surface Scan on the HDD, and after a long time and noresult, i would trow out The HDD and buy a new one

Solve : multi operating systems?

Answer»

I have a computer with two operating systems installed, Microsoft 2000 Professional and WINDOWS XP. Is there a way to delete Windows 2000 Professional without FORMATTING my HARD drive so I can keep Windows XP?Can you access files in the Win2k partition from XP?
If so all you have to do is find the file boot.ini ( on your boot drive i.e. C: )
Right click and select properties.
Uncheck the Read-only checkmark in Attributes.
Edit the boot.ini file in Notepad and remove the reference to Win2k.
Make sure "default=" points to XP
Save the boot.ini file

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Delete the WINNT folder from the Win2k partition to reclaim about 600 MB on your hard drive.

Solve : kinda stupid but really annoying?

Answer»

well my pc is still slow and shity this guy was workin on it for a few hours he had to go home though but my pc crashed today and when i restart i get this annoying "active desktop is disbaled" thing in the background i click enable active desktop and IE explorer gives me a scripting error and when i opend the display optoins thing were u choose ur background after i set it to a background it frozeup and its not in my task manager list of porgrams runing and its blocking my icons please help , my pc is waaaaaaaaay to slow to restart it also im using windows XPI THINK computers are the least of your problems. SILENCE NOOB , well anyway how do i close itYou need to get a real XP CD and reformat this thing and start over. That's for starts. Then post back if it is too slow. Do you have an XP CD?if i had it it seemed to magicaly dissapear..............but my D:\ drive isint infected just the C:\ my primary driveUntil you get the system clean (and I personally don't think you can short of a reinstall) there is no reason to expect anything to work right. Sorry.lol if i ever do get a new pc ill blow this one up with a BB gun , hopefully i can get a windows XP OS disc though (wallmart) it will be windows XP SP1 though and im runing on SP2 but that doesnt matter ive wanted to start over SINCE my pc droped below 10GBWe'll wait to hear from you after WalMart. Don't even connect that thing to the internet until you have SP2, an antivirus and a firewall in PLACE. If you do, you'll get the same advice again. You will be infected within seconds!and i might recommend a 12 guage shotgun instead of a BB gun. ur BB will probably hit a heatsink and BOUNCE right back and hit u in the face.

Solve : The FAQ section !?

Answer»

Do all the new folks here know there is a FAQ section constantly under development to assist with the most common issues and most frequently ASKED questions? It is the last section on the main forum page. It is for information only, not for asking questions, so read, learn and THEN ask in the appropriate section if you don't understand. You can get a lot of tips for your computer use.  I'll check it every once in a while if I haven't found the answer to my question else where on the INTERNET.  I seldom make topics about my issues though...LOL ....... I would rather talk to Dilbert ..... LOL

Solve : XP, icon problem?

Answer»

When I put the MOUSE over an icon a TEXT box pops up.  I don't know what to call it so I can't search
for help.  What do I call that or how do I GET rid of them in xpWhy do you want to get rid of them?

They're called "tooltips", by the WAY.  GOOGLE for TweakUI for XP if you want to change this and other settings.  But be warned that you can inadvertently make Windows unrecogniseable, if you don't know what you're doing.

don't know how to post any information on my computers operating systems etc.   :-?You can run Everest Home and find out most everything about your hardware. It's free.

Solve : Computer running soooo sooo slow...?

Answer»

I have a Compaq with an 80 gig hard drive and 248 megs of RAM It is 2 years old. Recently it's running super slow and locking up alot. I have run Norton AntiVirus, Spybot and Adaware and they all found nothing. I downloaded Ewido and ran it...It found some stuff but the program itself keeps freezing up on my computer. I'm also getting popups that I didn't use to get they say things like: Exittracking, or they want me to download winantivirus or a pop up that says your computer may be infected.

What do I need to try next??

Thanks
AmandaUpdate all of those programs, turn system restore off and reboot in safe mode. Run everything again. You also need to NOT click on those adverttisements!

You next should download and run Hijack This and post your log file here (zipped if possible, or use several posts to include it all0 for analysis. Are you sure that the definitions are recent for Ad-Aware and Spybot?

1) Disable system restore. (In fact, It might be good to delete all system restore points.. you can't trust them now.)
2) Have you tried Hijack This? http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html (Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it and post your log file)
2) Try running a few web based scanners:
   *http://scan.sygatetech.com/pretrojanscan.html (Trojan scanner)
*http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ ('nuther trojan scanner; need IE 5 or later with Active X)
3) MANY folks recommend running spybot/ad-aware in Safe Mode. Try it.

Keep in touch.

That's my hijack file. Do you see anything WRONG with it?? IF so how do I fix it??

thanksPut up the rest of your logfile.
BTW, you have a trojan & spyware so far.Okay I thought that was all. Should I rerun it??

I'm new to some of this and have no clue about it.

ThanksIf you read the screen when you post, there is a Maximum of 5500 characters so what happens is your hijackthis log gets clipped off past that maximum.
You need to copy & paste the rest of the log, maybe even in 2 more pieces.

[highlight]Edit:[/highlight] Try running Ewido in safe mode. How's this..aces67.......
Before you start .....SHUT off your system restore

From the running processes ........delete
C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

C:\PROGRA~1\DIRECWAY\bin\dpcproxy.exe

Then in hijckthis mark for removal the following :

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lich] lich.exe

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

O16 - DPF: {C4925E65-7A1E-11D2-8BB4-00A0C9CC72C3} (Virtools WebPlayer Class) - http://a532.g.akamai.net/f/532/6712/5m/virtools.download.akamai.com/6712/player/ install3.0/installer.exe

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{637FD55A-083C-4661-886D-4459DBE60064}: Domain = direcway.com

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{637FD55A-083C-4661-886D-4459DBE60064}:  NameServer = 66.82.4.8

O23 - Service: DIRECWAY Webcast (DPC_SRV_WEBCAST) - Hughes Network Systems - C:\PROGRA~1\DIRECWAY\bin\dpcproxy.exe

make sure you have MARKED the ones listed and then click on fix marked .......

Then reboot into safe mode and do a full system scan with your anti virus

Delete anything found ...... then reboot back into normal mode ..... with system restore still off .... and run Ewido ....if you dont have it get it at ....
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ewido_security_suite_d4677.html  ....make sure you update it before scanning ....remove anything it finds .......
Now rescan with hijackthis and post a new logfile .

dl65
One QUICK question.... Do I really want to delete the files associated with Direcway?? That's my internet provider.

Thanks!!!

I deleted what you said except for the Direcway files. I ran Ewido and found 7 items.

Here's my new hijack file.

Thanks!!

It's already running faster! Quote

[highlight]Edit:[/highlight] Try running Ewido in safe mode.

Solve : Monitor will not go into standby?

Answer»

I have two admin accounts on my machine.  On one profile (Profile A), the screensaver comes on when the set TIME is met.  Then the monitor goes into to standby in the set time.  Profile A is using a screensaver that comes with PLUS!.  The other profile (Profile B), goes into the screensaver mode properly.  Then when the monitor is supposed to go to standby, but it kicks back to the desktop.  Profile B is using the Starfield screensaver.  I have checked and they have the exact same hardware settings (mouse, keyboard, etc).  Also, both profiles have the same applications in the systray.  I need help, as this is driving me crazy.  Thanks.

Solve : Msn emails??

Answer»

Can anyone tell if MSN emails is still going or has it been taken over by Hotmail. Was the address BOOK held on the email server as I can't find it on a computer that used Msn email client. In FACT can't find Msn email client listed on any Mircosoft web sites.Msn and hot mail have always been one and the same and bouth are still running, and will be untill MS GO's under or the internet explodesBoth MSN and Hotmail are by The Microsoft Network. The only difference is that Hotmail is free, and MSN requires a subscription. MSN provides Dial-Up Internet and comes along with some DSL IPS's.

(ANOTHER difference is if you get an msn.com or hotmail.com domain on your address)

The address book is NORMALLY held on the web server. Sometimes, people have address books that they had on their computer that they did not sync with the MSN/Hotmail server.

Solve : Keeps Restarting...?

Answer»

:-?I have Windows XP, and whenever I turn it on, & put in the password it'll begin starting up, but before it does, it'll resart.  I keep putting in the password, so it'll start up, but it keeps restarting...   I don't know why.   I can't boot into Safe Mode, or the Last Known Good Configureation or anything like that, because it'll just restart before it does...   I'm really fustrated with it because I just bought an Ipod, but cannot use it...     Can Someone Please Help Me Out Here?

Thanx,

MaxellComputer virus

Computer viruses such as the blaster virus are written to reboot your computer without warning. Usually these viruses will make the computer reboot ever 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes after the computer has booted.

If you believe your computer may be infected with a virus or are uncertain if your computer is infected with a virus make sure your virus scanner definitions are up to date.

Maxell....  ok , lets see if we have any OPTIONS available ......
you have Win Xp installed ........
do you have SP2 and all the latest updates ?
What anti virus do you have installed and is it up to date ?
Have you experienced any issues with your machine recently ?  ...anything at all odd ?
Exactly what happens when you attempt to boot into Safe mode ?
Do you have the original win xp disks available if required ? not a copy .
Is this machine part of a network and if it is are you the administrator ?
How old is the machine and what is it ?

If you can fill in the answers ,we can see what options if any are available to you .

dl65

I have Norton anti-virus, can't tell if it's up to date, though; can't get to desktop.  Only been experiencing this problem, other than this, it's a great system.  When I attempt to boot into safe mode the same thing happens as when I boot into regular mode, or any other mode.  It will restart before anything loads.  I just got the full version of XP from a friend, which is most likely original.  It's a lone PC that's only two years old and its an LG.  It restarts in like 10-15 seconds after I turn it on, so I have no time to do anything.

Maxell Quote

I just got the full version of XP from a friend, which is most likely original.

Well, that's like being "kind of pregnant". It either is or it isn't. Does it have a hologram on it and say Microsoft in big letters? Did you get the COA with it? Is it installed on another machine?  Maxell:

I agree with dcihon that it could be a computer virus.  I had a customer with a virus doing the same thing to her PC this week.  There is one other possibility: a hardware problem.  The power supply might be going bad, or the processor might be overheating.  Have the power supply fan, case fans, or processor fan stopped working?

DocYes, It is an original XP cd.  The fan does work, power supply I'm not sure about.

Thanx,

MaxellIf you have a floppy drive, and a friend with an antivirus scanner that lets you make a anti-virus removal bootable disk, then ask them to make one for you. This disk(s) will scan for and remove most known viruses if the disk is up to date.

(Norton and McAfee both have the virus removal disk feature. Normally, it is called a rescue disk. )I had a problem like this where my COMP would just randomly shut down and sometimes I'd have to wait a few minutes before it would let me turn it back on, then it would shut down again... I looked inside and it was really dusty so I hoovered my fans and it stopped doing it. Maybe you can try that ?I dont recoment you VACUME your PC if its very dusty use a paint brush , or compressed AIR, the nosel on a vacume and create Static Electricity and that can do damage  i am having this exact same problem i think. i start it up and it goes to a black screen asking how to proceed, normally, safe mode, or the last working mode. and then after choosing normal or last working it goes to the windows loading page for a few seconds, then restarts all over again before it gets a chance to continue.Let's eliminate this as a issue.
Go to this site and FOLLOW the instructions.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.mspxthat may work if i could get past the startup page. halfway through the windows loading page it restarts, making it impossible to do anything.Try this :
Format the drive
Then Install windows and DO NOT have it connected to the internet.
See if it works without being connected to the internet.
You can get this virus within 15 seconds of being online.will this get rid of all my documents and settings? and how do i format the drive?

Solve : Pixelated Taskbar Icons?

Answer»

This is quite unusual. I was curious about the various accessibility options available in XP, so I launched the Accessibility wizard. The first option you can change with the wizard is the text size for items on the screen. For kicks, I checked the smallest  text size available. This changed the size of the menu bars of my applications. To revert back to my original settings, I clicked the cancel button. Everything seemed fine,  until I looked at my task bar. I noticed that my quick launch icons were slightly larger and pixelated.

The 'small icons' option is checked for the QuickLaunch toolbar. When I check "Large icons" the icons look fine (they just take up an enormous amount of SPACE)

The icons in the sytem tray look even worse. Even when I open the taskbar properties box and select "Hide inactive icons" >> "Customize..." the icons are bloated and pixelated. Juxtapose the Quicktime icon in the QuickLaunch tray vs. the one in the  system tray:

Strangely, the icons in my Start menu are their normal size. The size that you see here is the former size of my QuickLaunch/System Tray icons.

Even weirder is that all submenus accessed from the start menu show larger blockier icons. Here's the All Programs submenu:

Also, the tiny icon on all application or document tabs on my taskbar are large and blocky.  The small icon in the upper left corner of any open application's main window is also bloated. When I'm in a folder and choose to list all items by small icon, they look just fine.

This small thread shows that others have had the same problem (except mine didn't  involve a laptop nor has it lasted as long):  http://forum.tweakxp.com/forum/Topic162054-37-1.aspx

Things I have tried:
Restart (Computer equivalent of taking two aspirins)
Frobbing around with accessibility wizard some more.
Checking to see if my screen's DPI has changed (it hasn't)
General useless flailing around with the start menu, changing icon sizes back and  forth, etc.

My computer is a P3, 800MHz, 512RAM, XP Pro SP2

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

--Oober Noober

P.S. Ugh, I just noticed that the JPG format further pixelated the images. Trust me, the icons look bad even without the JPG distortion.Sounds like you need to rebuild the icon cache.  Have you tried MS's TweakUI for WinXP?I tried TweakUI 2.10.0.0 by selecting the last option entitled "Repair", selecting "rebuild icons", and then clicking "repair". I didn't see any immediate effect so I restarted. My taskbar icons are still pixelated as are all sub-start menu icons. Also, as I poked through the registry I noted that all of the little folder icons were bloated. *sigh* What baffles me is how doing something so seemingly unrelated could cause this.

What about my iconcache.db file? I've heard some folks say that deleting and therefore forcing it to be rebuilt might help. Others have said that it didn't work. I don't want to start recklessly deleting things... I've already met my quota of XP reinstalls for this year.

Also, there is a practice of increasing the icon cache that seems to be prevalent. Only problem is that it requires you to actually add an entry to the registry, which always makes be break out in hives (no pun intended). Read more about it here: http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-1035_11-5164407.html#

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

--OoberYep, I would try the deletion method next.  You were going to back it up first, after all.

The regy tweak doesn't tempt me.  Still shell-shocked from system resource horrors of yester-Windows... Quote

You were going to back it up first, after all.

Uhhh... nnn... Uh... yes.

I deleated my iconcache.db file. It was 2,181KB, if that means anything. Upon restart, There was no change. What followed next was a series of desperation level tweaks that I was almost sure wouldn't do anything (and they didn't) but I tried anyway just to make sure. I restarted in Safe Mode (as if), frobbed around with screen resolutions, hardware acceleration, blah, blah, blah. One thing that made a slight difference was changing my screen from 96 to 120 DPI. Quicklaunch icons were larger and smoother. Changing them to the larger size (right-click the resize bars next to the QuickLaunch area and select view >> large/small icons) only made them slightly larger. However System Tray icons were as bad as EVER (maybe even worse) as were regedit folder icons. I KNOW, none of that stood a chance of solving my problem, but it at least made me feel like I was doing something.

I suppose my last option is to ENLARGE the icon cache in RegEdit (*gulp*). I'm not sure how that would help me, but its my last resort. The only problem: most people seem to edit the icon cache in relation to corrupted desktop icons. My problem is related to the mini-icons that populate various areas of my system. Might or might not be related. Here's the thread that I read through for info: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1061668518

Any last suggestions before I get the machete out and launch a foray into my registry?

Get the panic button ready...

--Oober NooberI just used a VB script from www.Kellys-Korner.com. The code was simple enough:

Code: [Select]Option Explicit

Set WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Dim WSHShell, n, p, itemtype, mybox

p = "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Max Cached Icons"
itemtype = "REG_SZ"
n = "12000"
WSHShell.RegWrite p, n, itemtype

MyBox = MsgBox("You must Log Off/Log On for the changes to take effect.", 48,"Done")

I figured that way if something went wrong I could theoreticaly blame KELLY. As I expected, there was no positive change. I'm flummoxed.

:-?

--Oober

What happens if you delete and re-create the quick launch shortcuts? No improvement. Remember, the problem wasn't isolated to my QL area. It was almost every small format icon on my system with the exception of listing a folder by details mode (or any other option that listed folder contents in the small icons).

It doesn't matter anymore because the problem has been solved!!. I changed my system's appearance from XP style to the old Windows classic scheme. All of my system's small icons were restored to their former selves. The icons stayed smooth when I returned back to the XP style. That doesn't stop me from wondering just what happened though...

--OoberOh well.  I wouldn't worry about it.

Unless you happen to be an MS kernel coder...

Solve : Recovery Console/Startup Issue?

Answer»

When I try to start the pc my kids use, it boots and I see the windows screen then goes black screen. When I try to access the recovery console my ADMIN password doesn't work. Will booting from xp cd and initiating a re-install wipe EVERYTHING out?

The system runs xp pro. kelltech   .. If you can get into the bios and CHANGE the boot sequence to CD-Rom 1st boot ......... PUT your XP disk in the drive , reboot and do a format and clean install and all the stuff will be wiped clean .

dl65  I can get it to boot from cd, but i was hoping to not wipe everything, there is some homework assignments on there my daughter wanted to save. It is looking more and more like a format is needed though  Can you boot to safe mode (F8 at boot up before the Windows logo) and save the files to floppies?nah, it gets hung on the safe mode start. I see the xp startup splash screen but thats as far as I get before the screen goes black.I would suggest booting with a Linux Live CD and copying the files to floppies, pen drive, across a network, etc. Then reinstall Windows, if that's what you WANT.

Solve : mass networking?

Answer»

Hi i dont kno if anyone can help me but im trying to set up LAN. I want to be able to have a IP address for every computer but not have to do it to all something so  you could just PLUG a network cable into a computer and it would have a IP address sent to it and it needs to beable to work with WORKGROUP. i have seen it done before and now i would really like to know how to do it. if you can that would be great.
thanks in advance. If you know any thing a bout computers , Set Up ICS on one computer , and it will give all your computer IP's that will work together if there set to auto configure.

if you dont know how to do that ill give you step by step instructions" I want to be able to have a IP address for every computer but not have to do it to all something so "

I am not sure what this sentence mean, can you clerify it?

Also it would be helpful if you can provide more INFO on what OS you use on your network, number of PCs etc...

" I want to be able to have a IP address for every computer but not have to do it to all something so "

by that i mean not having to go to all the individual computers and change the IP address

Im running XP pro and so are all the other computersOh yes, do you have a router? if not not you can use ICS as suggested but a hardware router WORKS better. And if you want static IP address for each PC you can disable the DHCP server from your router and assign IP address to each PC via the TCP/IP control panel. (I am assumming you use Windows.)  But becareful, make sure you use the correct IP range and the subnet mask. Write back if you don't already know how to do this. The Easyiest way is to set Up a DHCP, and windows XP has one built in to  ICS, it will do what you want, im going on lunch now , when i get back i type up how you can do it , its prety simple , and will be easyest if one of your computers has 2 network connections.thanks heaps. ill give it a go.Also refer to the >home networking FAQ<.How to Set up a Simple Network,

Solve : can't boot up pc?

Answer»

One of the work desk tops a IBM netvista PC, has a problem starting windows. This pc was being used by someone else and it got hung up while in use. I am not sure what CAUSED the problem. So It was restarted. After restarting It cannot start windows and says 'no operating system found, press F1 to start bootup'. I was also informed that another person tried to start it in safe mode and had a diaglog box come up which asked to start up in last known good configuration and they selected 'No' now inspite of PRESSING F1 or even F8, the system keeps doing the same thing'saying no operating system found press F1.
Can anyone tell me what to do? Can you tell me how to get into the bios to have pc to start from Windows XP CD. I have the original XP CD with me.
Thanks
regards
The Saint"No operating system found" USUALLY means the HARD drive is damaged or dead. Go to the BIOS (F1) and see if the hard drive is there and make it be the first boot device (for this test). If it shows, but it will not boot, download a diagnostic FROMT he appropriate hard drive makes's site (it will fit on a floppy) and boot that and have it analyze the hard disk. Report back with any errors.

You could make sure the CDROM is listed as first boot device (or before the hard drive) and try to boot with the CDROM, but if the hard drive has problems, it will not allow Windows to be found or repaired. If the drive is OK, you could try fixmrb from the repair console, in case just the MBR is damaged. Thanks, will try that and report back. Just to confirm. we need to press F1 at the time of start up Plese confirm.
The SaintYes, F1 for IBM. You usually see that message from a cold boot, rather than a restart. You can press it several times, before the Windows logo.

Solve : Cut / Paste / Drag issues?

Answer»

OK, I'm no noob.  Been around 'puters since the good old days of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K (With 16K memory upgrade... Whoohooo!!!)

I've been having a problem with XP Pro SP2 (fully updated.)

Everytime I highlight text with the mouse or keyboard, it automatically gets put into the windows clipboard... regardless of whether I right click and cut/copy, CTRL C / X or not.

For example, I run FlashGet V1.72  I often have file links in a text notepad file... If I 'highlight' a URL containig a file I wish to download in notepad or any other application, with the mouse or keyboard, FlashGet will think I've 'copied' the URL and jump into action ready to download.

Similarly, If I 'highlight' a bit of text in notepad, right click it, select copy/cut (Or CTRL C / X)... then highlight another bit of text in any application at all, and try to paste what I previously copied/cut, the second text I highlighted just preplaces itself with...  itself.

I often use notepad (or UltraEdit 32) for making notes about clients or other tid bits of information.  I always put the title of the document in the first line of the text file... ie "COMPUTER Requirements" for example.  When I go to save the file I often WANT it in it's own folder, so I highlight the document title, and hit CTRL C.  I then clik, File -> Save (Or "save as").   A save dialog box appears as usual.  I then click the 'New Folder" icon to create a new folder.  The New Folder defaults with the name "New Folder" and is highlighted in blue to be edited, as normal.  All I should have to do is right click the blue highlighted words, "New Folder" and click , "Paste" to put the highlighted text in plce of the default folder name... Simple, right??

NOT!!!!!

If I do the above, all I get is the words "New Folder" pasted over the words, "New Folder"  If I cancel out of that and right click in some blank space of my text file and then click, "Paste"..  the words, "New Folder" get pasted..... even though I never asked Windows to copy the words, "New Folder" in the first place!!

Sometimes, Nothing gets pasted and the words, "New Folder" (the name of the default new folder) get replaced with nothing and I get the error message pontificating about how the folder needs to have a name.

This is frustrating the *censored* out of me!!!

I have discovered that if, after creating the new folder, I hit the "End" key, then delete the words, "New Folder" with the "backspace" key then right click or CTRL V, I get the desired result.... sometimes!  But this is not the most expedient way of doing it, nor the way it should be.

Even if I am cutting/copying and pasting text from word, notepad or any other application and then creating a new folder via the explorer the same thing occours.  I am 80% of the time unable to paste the text I have just cut/copied to CHANGE the new folder name.

Also, lets say I want to right click and hold the right mouse button down on a file or folder..  then drag it to the desktop or another open folder then let the right mouse button go to get the little menu up that lets me CHOOSE, "MOVE here" or, "Copy here"... I can't do it.  I can drag only so far before the whole open folder window gets dragged with the mouse...  not just the file / folder I want to drag...  the whole flamming window gets dragged with the file.  Most annoying!!

I am running Firefox V1.5.0.4 and I know there is some sort of cut/paste issue with that, but I run both a notebook and a desktop with the same software...  These issues only occour on my desktop...  not my notebook....  I have absolutely zero issues with the notebook computer.

I run an AMD 3700+ 64 Athlon CPU
2 GB RAM
Windoze XP SP2 on fully automatic updates.
Micro$haft Digital Media Keyboard 1.0A with mouse
Epox 9NPA MoBo
Kaspersky AV v5.0.391

My notebook is a Samsung X50 with 1 GB RAM

I've thrown every anti-virus / malware program I could get my hands on at my PC and no malware is found  Hijack This v1.99.1 finds nothing obscure either.  I do have a fair bit of software installed but not more than on previous installations of XP that gave me no issues at all.

Any Ideas??

Cheers

Ticcer

There are several program such as Trillian or firefox AutoCopy (add-ons) that include an 'auto copy selected text to clipboard' function. I would first check to see if you have any of these programs turned on with this option checked.

Perhaps there is such an option in UltraEdit or FlashGet?

Hope this helps,

bdetchevery,

Thanks for the reply.  Autocopy is inactive in firefox..  i don't use Trillian... excellent progy btw...

Besides..  Why does all this stuff happen in explorer?

Cheers

Solve : XP Driving Me to Suicide?

Answer»

Hi Folks,
1s TIME user here, discovered the website &AMP; HOPING someone can help.
I have a Sony Vaio Laptop with XP home as an op system, 256 MB Of Ram & a New Hard drive put in as the last one died.
The Problem is the computer keeps crashing & restarting in the middle of programs mainly Photoshop 7.0,    after the computer restarts, it tells me it has recovered from a technical error and asks me to send a report to microsoft which i do but to no avail. I have updated my drivers. The error that keeps apprearing is the following

c:\windows\minidump\mini050906-02.dmp
c:\documn1\garrett\locals-1\temp\wor5tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml

I am not sure if this problem has occured since the new hard drive was INSTALLED as I didnt use the computer a lot previous to the new drive going in. Is it possibly a memory problem?Photoshop being a big drain on the system
Any help would be appreciatedok, what is the proccessor speed? as a warning, 256 is the MINIMUM amount of ram that xp can run on, i would advise upgrading to 512, i have never had good experiences with xp runnin on anything lower than 512. shouldnt cost much to upgrade, and should fix the prob, photo shop is VERY demanding of your system.Well, actually XP can run on 128 RAM. It's just not very pleasant.

Who repaired the laptop? Was there any warranty on it? How long ago was it done? Did you have a real XP CD to reinstall with? Has it had problems ever since the repair?  If not when did it start? spyware and virus protection?

Solve : Command 2 flush RAM ??

Answer»

Hye guys,
Does anybody know the command in cmd (Windows XP) 2 flush/empty the RAM ? It would be pretty useful instead of opening TweakXP all the time.

Thanx guys i used to use mem turbo, to handel my ram , it may have a cmd line capasity, ill go check and get back to youi look alt it , memturbo lets you set a key press combo , as long as you have it on the running in the back ground it just a key press away to scrub your ramThat program's free2try, $2buy. Thanx it but I don't wanna get illegal and CRACK it
Could U send me a command 4 cmd ?This isn't really necessary at all. What are you trying to do? What problems do you have that you THINK this will be a solution for? Most of those software solutions seem to be voodoo at best.i like voodoo its like magic.

i dont use things like memturbo any more i find it unnesscery if you just dont run alot of stuff and have enuph ramWell on silkroadforums there's this guy, who always restarts his computer 2 empty his RAM 2 have a smooth, lagless gameplay (according 2 his theory). Well restarting is 2 much ! He just needs the command so that he doesn't restart his computer...would save time You mean to get rid of all of the unnecessary running processes?
You could just use ALT+CTRL+DEL and view all of the processes. (only SYSTRAY and EXPLORER are needed to run Windows)
I don't think that you could flush the RAM with out getting rid of the System Heap and crashing your computer.

(BTW: If this person says that they start their computer, do nothing, and restart it again, it would not work at all. But, when restarting, it does get rid of the RAM info that was just "leftover" from all of the previous running programs)

You could also try searching for a program called, "Rambooster" it gets rid of a lot of that stuff in the RAM and MAKES your computer go faster. I cannot say if that program is still around, or how well it works....the program
you have
been looking for!
Windows fills up your computer's memory (RAM)
little by little and finally RAM is filled with unnecessary data.
Sooner or later you have to reboot your computer
to make it work faster.
With RamBooster you can continuously monitor
the amount of RAM.
If the amount of free RAM goes too low,
free more with RamBooster.
RamBooster can do this automatically if you wish.

Things RamBooster does NOT do :
- Modify your system in any WAY
- Defragment the RAM
- Double your RAM etc.
- Increase system resources (GDI and USER)

I am not 100% if this is the program, but please, make sure you have an AV scanner before downloading and installing just in case its the wrong site:
http://www.sci.fi/~borg/rambooster/that sounds just like the 2 programs i mentioned there all the same kinda thing ,and kida wortless when it comes down to it, youll get the best performance form haveing less programs running than from keep your excess ram tidy

Solve : Problem getting newish hard drive to load, I think?

Answer»

The problem is, I put in this already used harddrive into my computer after the old one fried. Now, when I start the computer, I get kicked to an error screen that tells me to start my comp in safe mode, which is fine. Except when I do so, it just re-loads like I just turned on the computer. Now, I know the hard drive is GOOD, Used it on another comp before.
How can I get around this, I tried to use a windows boot disk, didn't work. Tried to load in the other options on the screen which included "Normal mode, Safe mode with COMMAND prompt, Safe mode with network, and last working settings." When i leave the thing alone and just let it do it's count down, it still isn't loading windows. It acts like it is going to for a sec, the window XP logo on the front page comes up, then it kicks me back to re-load.
Someone with more sense then me, please help.most likely a problem with the hardware settings being changed (from the old comp to ur new one). u need to reformat ur new hd.I had THOUGHT of that, but I don't get my product KEY for my XP pro till tommorrow and I am impatient. But thanks for the advise. And I am sure that is exactly what is wrong with it, and tommorrow when I get my key, it will all be over and done.patience is a virtue...

......whatever the *censored* "virtue" means.lol  Old hard drives stuck into a new computer usually causes problems.

Check the BIOS to see if it is being recognized properly. Recheck all jumpers.I swap HDDs around all the time, and mostly they work fine it looks like you need to reinstall windows , and like GX1_man Says

you need to make sure that your bios has the settings for the new HDD, and on most bios'es HDD info is on the frist page, just set them all to auto configer and then redetect and it should be fine

Solve : systems files?

Answer»

In a dell inspiron 6000, recently installed operating system window XP pro. The systems files in my computer (c d e f g) drives open with search when we double click the drive. And the desktop resolutions is low. Cannot be reset It shows maximum resolution 1280x800.  But the icons still show like that of a lower resolution. After chaning to a lower resolution 1264x764 the icons still remains the same, like no setting change is being applied.
can anyone HELP?
The SaintDid you load the appropriate drivers from the Dell site? If not, it will not function correctly.Gx_1Man,
the operating system is the re-installation cd of Dell Latitude LAPTOP. So the wireless driver of my Laptop(inspiron) was not working, I hve installed some other wireless driver and the ATI graphic card drivers is not installing.
In the display properties plug in monitor show only the defaulted intel (R) 915 GM/GMS,910GML express chip FAMILY in 1 and 2 - and 2 is not activated.
While trying to install ATI Graphic card it says ' Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current HARDWARE or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software'

Any ideas? So it is not a discrete real Windows CD? Too bad.

Solve : Specified domain does not exist?

Answer»

A friend of mine had a perpetual restart problem on his computer. The only option I found -- after trying everything I could think of and then researching it -- was to wipe his system and start over.

So I reinstalled WinXP using the system restore disk that came with his Gateway. I ran fdisk to reset his partitions, and then formatted the HD. When Windows finally finished installing -- and I tried to login -- I got the following error:

The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
Please try again or contact your system administrator.

All the research I've done on this points to a network problem. It shouldn't have anything to do with logging in. Should it?

Also, I tried on his name and with the admin account under safe mode and normal startup. Is it set to boot up from a network source in the BIOS? PERHAPS he was monkeying around in there? THis does not happen with a FRESH install on a normally configured machine. What are the boot options listed/Boot order is as follows:

1. HD
2. Floppy
3. CD-ROM
4. DVD-ROMHow did you setup the network when you reinstalled? A workgroup or a domain? Try a workgroup. That should solve it.I haven't finished the setup yet.

It runs the "DOS" setup first. After that it says remove any MEDIA you have in the drives and restart, but when I restart it won't let me log in and gives me that error.Win XP does not have DOS, so that is a Gateway restore CD. (Do you have a SATA hard drive in there?)

Windows XP is a graphical install start to finish.I thought Gateway computer Were dead Befor windows XP came out

and the Error your getting could only mean the image your loading was configured to connect to a domain

That is a Stupid thing for an Image to DO ... very very stupid. but it not your fault

What you need is a Real XP Disk, if i were me id Download one, and SINCE you have a lisence for XP its legal sorta

Solve : Win2k Device Mgr not saving device changes?????

Answer»

I installed Windows 2000 in a dual BOOT configuration on a HITACHI laptop (MX133t re-chipped with 233MHz MMX ).
Opening Device Manager I have the yellow EXCLAMATION point on the Infrared port and a error code 10.  :-/
No problem...clicked the resources tab and saw that it was trying to use the same resources as the internal USRobotics modem: 2F8/IRQ-3.  Double-clicked on the modem device manager entry, hit the resources tab, un-clicked the "Use automatic settings" checkbox (it wasn't greyed/disabled...).  Chose the same configuration used by 98SE:  Basic configuration 0006 (5E8/IRQ-10), saw no conflicting devices...clicked YES and rebooted.

After reboot still have the resource conflict between modem and IR port trying to both use 2F8/IRQ-3  :-?

Logged on as Administrator and tried again...it still refuses to use the manually selected configuration on reboot.

Installed the latest service packs and got the latest Win2k compliant drivers for all of the hardware.

Un-installed both devices and re-installed...different orders...singly...no change...

Disabled 'PnP OS' and APM in BIOS, re-installed Windows 2000, F5'd to disable ACPI/APM, use StandardPC and use hal.dll.  Same problem still exists...

Anybody got any ideas?  :-?I have seen the same thing on several older laptops (THinkPads) and was unable to resolve it so there was no exclamation point.

Do you need the infrared port? If not just ignore it and the modem will work normally.

Solve : socket closed?

Answer»

:-?my printer is not COMMUNICATING with my computer. ive had a message pop up several times saying " socket closed". while chatting with dell help, they said i had a bad printer and so they sent me a new printer(old printer was 2 months old, new printer is 1 week old). well after 4 days with the new printer, i am getting the same message" cant communicate with computer". i know its not 2 bad printers. i noticed that the one THING the two had in common was they both said "socket closed". i dont really know what a socket is or how to fix it. dell just makes me do the stupid troubleshooting over and over again. BUT ITS NOT THE PRINTER. i keep saying that but they just keep going back to the T.S.
is there ANY one that can help me with my socket problem!? . THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU TO WHOM EVER CAN!!!SK8R.....  I'm almost in AGREEMENT with you that it probably isnt the printer ......  I would be looking at a bad ( or corrupt driver ) , a bad cable or PERHAPS a bad or faulty USB port .....
Now after having said that , What o/s are you USING ? what make and model is your computer ( if it's a Dell what's  the service tag number) and last but not least the model number of the Dell printer .
One more thing just occurred to me .......Did you completely install new drivers , when you got the replacement printer.

Solve : ODBC Batch?

Hi, is it possible to set up a ODBC CONNECTION using a batch file and if so how?

Many thanks

What exactly are you trying to achieve?  What operating systems does this involve?  What source DBs?  Etc.

I have a large number of USERS, most of which aren't very technically minded so instead of trying to talk people through setting up the ODBC connection over the PHONE I would like to automate the process somehow and I thought probably the easiest way would be to create a batch file that I could send to them.

Using Win XP as are all the users on the domain.

Connection is to a SQL Server

Thanks
What I found useful in these types of situations is to do some screen captures of the install process and post them on a company Knowledge base area or Intranet if you have one.Ack.

How's your C programming?  As far as I know the ODBC system (which is a bit of a hotchpotch at best) doesn't have a command LINE interface.  You can probably achieve what you want using the API (see >MSDN<) or maybe someone on one of the MS advanced forums could help with this.

It's over my head, I'm afraid.  :-/No problem, I was unsure if there was a command interface for this. I can do this in vb but it's a pain... oh well best get to it!

Thanks againGood luck.  Maybe you'll be able to release a bit of shareware/freeware at the end of it.

Solve : Secure VPN Connection?

Answer»

I am looking to secure a VPN connection.  I have an XP Pro machine that is running as the VPN "server".  I also have an XP Pro machine that will be the VPN client.  I sucessfully setup a basic VPN connection, but I am looking for a quick easy WAY SECURE way to make sure that my information is private.  I would RATHER not install third party software, but I am willing to try any free solution.

Thanks,

PatIsn't the purpose of a VPN to have a secure connection through a tunnel?  If yes, then you should need no other software and what you are using should be fine.  If not, then try using google.SilentAssasin64,

I appreciate your quick response.  Someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but it was my understanding that a basic VPN setup through XP is not secure/encryted.  When I searched google I found many ways to tunnel through Unix, but nothing for the WINDOWS platform.  Any other suggestions??

PatOh, my bad man.  I did not know that the Windows VPN was unsecure.  If you are looking for a good secure VPN I've about something like HotSpotVPN or something like that.  There are many others and I had one in my head but I forgot it.  As soon as I remember I'll let ya know.

EDIT:  A VPN that you MIGHT consider using is Hamachi.  Check out there site at www.hamachi.cc.  They might have what you're looking for.

EDIT x2:  What exactly are you trying to do using VPN?you can turn on IPSEC sercurity on a VPN by default , and you can also install
encrypted proticals in windows an encrypt your network traffic.

im sorry but i have little knoledge in this area , but i can tell you how to turn on ipsec ,  and rember to use all the same settings on either computer

Frist just the New Connection wizzard to make a new Connection, to connect to my workplace then VPN.

once you have that, open the connection properties , and go to the  "Networking" tab and in the "Type of VPN" box chose L2TP IPSEC VPN

Then go tho the "Security" tab from here you can set your IPSEC encryption key with the "IPSEC settings" button that way it will use the same key every time tho, im not realy sure how it works when you dont give it a key.

the rest of the settings on this page are to do with the level of encryption on your password , i would leave them alone untill i had it working and then change them later

Solve : Reset Button Evil?????

Answer»

while i was playing a game, the game crashed. and that, in turn, crashed my comp.(totally froze it)
so i simply pushed the reset button. it booted normally, that is until where windows was supposed to load. instead it said "please set BOOT sequence properly (or sumthing like that) and insert proper boot media. press any key." and it would just keep saying that after u hit any key.

i fixed the problem by actually powering down and powering back up again. (not reseting) but i would like to know why this happened. does any one know or has anyone come across this before?

O.S. - windows XP pro. sp2Just ANOTHER Windows undocumented feature? I'm glad it is not doing it anymore, though.yeah it FREAKED me out. i just assumed it was going to do the scandisk thing when i didnt properly shut it down. UNLESS xp doesnt do that, (im used to the win98 scandisk)

p.s. i had no disks in any of my drives, but everytime i pushed enter (when it did the whole insert boot media thing), it checked my floppy DRIVE.(the light came on and it starterd spinning).  :-?

o well it works now.

Solve : Microsoft Office 2002 OUTLOOK?

Answer»

Hello,

I have been looking for a while for a way to disable a users ability to gain access to the internet from OUTLOOK.  We are using OUTLOOK 2002 at my work on Windows XP Pro SP2.  I am the IT systems administrator at my work and I was asked by my boss to disable a user's ability to get to the internet, well I did as much as I can, he only has access to 1 website and no address bar's to type in anything.

The problem i'm having is that there is an address bar located above the Email list in OUTLOOK 2002.  When you click on INBOX there is a bar that has, |INBOX|Address[___________] on it.  Is there a way to get rid of the Address part on that bar.  I have tried to go to all of the customizing OPTIONS and I can not figure that out.

It seems LIKE a dumb question, but if anyone has a SIMPLE solution I would appreciate it.  Thank you for your time.I can tell you how to MAKE the address box disappear but I don't know how to restrict someone from easily restoring it.  If you click on the Toolbar Options button to the right of the Address box, you should see Add or Remove Buttons.  Under that, you'll see Web, and under that you'll see "Address:".  Click on Address: to remove it from the Web toolbar.

You can also remove the entire Web toolbar by going to Tools, Options, Customize, select the Toolbars tab, and uncheck the box for Web.There is a better, more elegant solution.  Install a software or hardware firewall and block outgoing requests on ports 80 (plain HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS) for that computer/user.

Solve : change file to MIDI??

Answer»

I would like to change a file the opens with Windows Media Player to a MIDI file. I've attempted to just add .midi and the end of the file name, but that doesnt do anything. please help!!Have a  read:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=wav+to+midi+converter&spell=1

<---------------You're unlikely to com across much in the way of free software that does this, and with any software, the results of CONVERTING from wave FORMAT to multi-voice midi format are never going to be that satisfactory.  From a computer's point of view, it is a ridiculously complcated task, to separate out one sound from another and work out which pitch each sound is at.  Something a trained musician can do easily.  Hah.  No substitute for the human brain.

Anyway, such software does EXIST, but don't expect miracles.  And since a lot of development is required for this kind of thing, don't expect the software to be cheap.  I dare say there are some open source projects of this nature out there, but I haven't come across them,  You could try a search at SourceForge or FreshMeat. Quote

e. I've attempted to just add .midi and the end of the file name, but that doesnt do anything.

The file name is not .MIDI it is .MID    try that and it should work.. and what ever GX1_Man said you need a converter if my process does not work.

and robpoeroy is right there are not that much free software out there that will do that..
P.S. .MID  or MIDI files do not sound good on the computer anyways.. it mixes them up.. but if you save it on a flopyy DISK and play it on the keyboard it will sound good.. the best actually.. give it a try..

Solve : Installed Windows twice?

Answer»

I have installed Windows XP twice as when the first version tried to load it would make a clicking sound then turn itself off and restart. So i put the restore disk in and installed it again, but now i've got two Windows.

This seems to cause problems as my internet runs really slow and itunes wont open at all. When i turn the COMPUTER on i get 2 choices whether to go on the old one or the one ve just installed. i can still find old FILES in the C drive such as all my old program files etc. Is there a way to remove or uninstall my old Windows? Why don't you start over and format the drive and install it again? Doing it the right way will prevent a LOT of problems in the future. How would i format the drive? ben_uno..... What kind of a machine are we dealing with ?

How many install/ restore cds do you have and how are they marked ?

dl65  I have 2 cds. One says 'contents pre loaded. For restore purposes only.' The other one say 'the software on this recovery CD ROM was pre installed on your hard drive at the factory and may only be used for backup and recovery of your Evesham computer system. Performance of the software is the sole responsibility of Evesham TECHNOLOGY Ltd.' This one also says 'Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2'.

Evesham have CREATED the CDs so it is quick and easy to restore your computer i think. ben_uno ....... and which cd did you use to do your reinstall ?

dl65  The second CD called 'Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2' ben_uno....  ok ...that sounds like the cd you should be using .
Perhaps you could walk us through exactly how you did the install .......

Solve : Could this file be trouble??

Answer»

Could this be something bad?

I have seen this in my Program Files for some time. I have cleaned and cleaned even in SAFE Mode with System Restore shut off. I find nothing, but this is ALWAYS STILL there.

I don't want to click on it and open it.

Any opinions?

Thanks. It's just an uninstall program.Okay, so just leave it alone?YES, you should. In fact, I think that opening it would uninstall INSTALLATION Wizard, which would not really be that good of a thing.

If you have a antivirus or antispyware scanner that says that it should be removed, that's another thing. But you should be just fine.Okay,

Thanks

Solve : Outlook Express acting "buggy"?

Answer»

Well I posted a little over a week ago about my computer shutting of months ago and having to add another powersupply box, then couldn't get my PC to boot all the way up, it kept completely locking up at certain points of the boot up process.  I attempted a system restore and even booting up in safe mode and always ended up locking up.  Don't KNOW what I did, but I must have hooked up SOMETHING wrong when I installed the new powersupply box but it's working now..but not great.   ANYWAYZZZ..getting on to the next problem... I have now.  Well it slows down a lot when running certain programs and now when I open Outlook and click on an email.. I don't want to open it just preview it in the preview pane, but just by clicking on it it randomly opens emails all the way.  Then when I go to delete them it sometimes delete 2 and 3 emails at a time..randomly again!  Even when going to newsgroups it randomly opens the posts in seperate windows.  I've done a virus scan.. no viruses, ran spyware cleaned that up.. any other suggestions?  I don't have a name "Brand" computer, this one was built for me, so there is no rescue disk and my ex took off the WINXP CD.. grr!!!!  any suggestions greatly appreaciated in ADVANCE!

BethAquire a copy of XP and reinstall,

al tho it sounds like your PC is sorta lagging when it gets commands from your keyboard and mouse , so id check all the connections , take the whole thing apart , then only but in the very basic parts , and test it, then put all the outher parts in and see if theres a problemCan you post a link to the previous discussion you mentioned, so we don't have to go searching for it?  Aside from the problems you're having when USING OE, I have the impression your computer is still not working right.

And, I think you're going to have to resolve an issue of ownership concerning a Windows CD.   If your ex is using that CD for his computer, one of you is probably going to have problems in the FUTURE getting Windows updates because one of you is in violation of the software license agreement.  In other words, you can't legally install Windows on multiple computers and the activation/validation procedures will, at some point in time, flag one of the systems as being illegal.  One of the recent Windows updates was a validation tool that verifies whether you have a legal installation of Windows.  If the Windows CD was originally installed on your computer, then you ex should be the one that encounters a problem.  You might point this out to him and try to get the CD back.
