Solve : Program Opens Below the Desktop Screen?

Answer»

I used WINZIP to open (5 or 6 FILES) and they cascaded on top of each other.  They started to cascade lower and lower on the screen until they disappeared.  The next time I opened WinZip, nothing showed up on the screen.  It opened at the bottom of the screen OBVIOUSLY to where I can't see it.

I tried to restore it, but nothing happens.  I tried to maximize it, but I need it to open where I can see the desktop and the program at the same time.

I tried to resize and move it, but I can't see it to move it.

Right-click on WinZip's button in the taskbar, and click "Move".  You MAY then use the cursor keys to move the window where you need it.

Solve : GPO - Redirecting Desktops?

Answer»

I'm creating a GPO for a group of users that only need to be able to browse the Internet.  Everything SEEMS to be working fine, i.e. the locked down parts of the policy (basically everything) are working fine.  The only thing that isn't working is the desktop redirection.  I'm redirecting ALLOF the user's DESKTOPS to a folder on an unused server DRIVE.  That folder is read only so that the users can't save anything to it.  The PROBLEM is that the desktops don't redirect.  The rest of the policy applies fine.  I've tried setting the policy to be "enforced" but that didn't help.

Settings:
Basic - Redirect everyone to the same location
Target:  Redirect to the following location
Target folder is a UNC path to the generic desktop

Any ideas?

Solve : mpeg-4 audio to mp3?

Answer»

I have about 230 songs of this type(mpeg-4 audio) in a folder and I want to put them on my mp3 player....my mp3 doesnt play mpeg-4 audio.  So I need to get them to mp3 format.  Is this possible?  Is there a converter out there?I USE cheetah audio converter, very USEFUL as it has a batch mode. whereas you can add as many songs to the open window as you want and leave it converting. You can ALSO change the bit rates to make songs bigger or SMALLER in size and change the quality. It supports virtually every audio type going so i would have THOUGHT it will convert mp4.

I dont know if it makes a difference or not but I run xp Pro. on my pc.

TinaProbably a bad motherboard or power supply. If you have experience and WANT to change it you can, but taking it to a shop is not a bad idea either.  I had the computer checked out today and at first they thought the power supply but then found out it was the mainboard that was fried. They recomended that I change out the main board and the cpu together. Its just has not been a good week

TinaAt least you're going to back up soon!  yep, I guess you have to look on the bright side of it, I did not lose my info and I should be back to normal tomorrow. :-/

Solve : Playing a CD or DVD on Windows Media Player?

Answer»

If a CD or DVD is played on a computer are any files CREATED on the hard drive that contain data from the CD or DVD?no, alll the info will be loaded in RAM to run the cd and dvd.Actually it depends on the player and the STREAMING method.  Rarely, some PLAYERS may cache info from the CD/DVD onto the hard drive.  Often, players will STORE certain information about the disk on your hard drive - e.g. a DVD's unique reference code, and the last location you were viewing.

Are we talking audio CD/video DVD?  If we're talking CD-ROM/DVD-ROM, the answer will be very different. Its a CD-R disc with MPG files. Then limited information will be stored on your hard drive.  The files themselves will only be transferred if you TAKE steps to do that yourself.

Solve : Windows XP - Something Bad Happened to CD-RW?

Answer»

Situation: Last week burned a number of documents to a particular CD-RW. Was ABLE to access files as needed. Today needed to access files and there is nothing there. No files, and according to drive, the disc has all but 400 kb free. As if it were blanked. I definitely did not erase it. That would be more than "slip of the thumb", could spontaneous erasing occur???
When I put into burner, and went through "my computer", there are no files there. Can't find my files, don't KNOW what could have happened to them.

Computer is less than a month old. Running Windows XP Pro. Burner is Artec VOM-12E48X. CD-RW disc is a Sony. Having no trouble READING any other cd-rws. THANKS for your consideration.  You did select "Burn these files to CD", right? You didn't just move them over? And the disc had been formatted? And you WERE able to see them and access them after the "burn" on the newly burned CDRW?its Most likely that hes not copied all the files or inproperly selected OTHERWISE the CD-RW is Defective

Solve : “Weird” XP Problems?

Answer»

Hi, everyone. I’m a newbie; and I’ve got three small problems.

1.      I did some tweaks via a freeware tool and I’m now stuck with the Windows Classic Look instead of the default XP [LOOKS] and style. How do I get it back?

2.      Somehow I’ve disabled my SYSTEM Restore feature. How do  I activate this necessary feature?

3.      My computer doesn’t turn off (power off) anymore. I have to wait for it to tell me that “It is now safe to turn off your computer”. How do I get back to that one click shut down/power off?

jamesmag2325..... try this ....... click start \control panel\system...... then click on the system restore tab....... then put a tick in the box in front of .......Turn on System Restore on all drives...... then click apply and then ok
That should turn back on system restore .

To get back the Category view ..... ( you are currently in "Classic" view ......)
Go back to control panel \ system ........ now look over to the left up near the top and you will see control panel ...and right below that " switch to category view."   that should do it ....

dl65  In responce to (3), Go to 'Run' in the start menu and type 'regedit' to open your register editor. Next, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENT VERSION\WINLOGON. After selecting the 'Winlogon' key, right click an empty area in the right pane, select 'New', and click 'String Value'. Type 'PowerdownAfterShutdown' to name the new value, double-click the new value, type '1' in the Value Data field, and click OK. Changes will come into affect after restarting the computer.

[highlight]You might want to BACKUP your registry before you try this by going to 'File' and clicking 'Export...'[/highlight]
I suggest the date as a file name.

I have tested this on my computer. Right-click on Taskbar, click Properties. Go to the Start Menu tab, and make sure "Start Menu" instead of "Classic Start Menu" is selected.I thank all of you for helping me; even though your info and tips didn't help. My computer is indeed [locked] in the Classic Start mode and won't power off by itself when I shut down. I really don't know what else to do. UNLESS, someone will tell me how to "MESS" about in the advance settings of XP such as the registry, etc.

Thanks, anyway."Messing" in the registry can cause all sorts of heartache for newbies. Lots of info on the net IF the problem is worth the solution.

Solve : boxes with x's?

Answer»

When ever I send email with pictures all they get is the WORDS.  The pictures come through as boxes with little red X's in the upper left hand cornes. Why? and what can I do to not have this problem any more?  I have tried clicking on the little red x's but nothing happens     :-? :-? :-? :-?[edit][/edit]
What email program/webmail are you using? Not QUITE sure what you mean I hope this answers your I use yahoo.comOkay - you use Yahoo webmail.  People will only be able to see graphics that are EITHER sent with the email, or which AVAILABLE online (in which case they will need to be online to see them).  How are you adding the graphics to your messages?I high light it all and then copy and paste it in a compose screen. I hope this is what you need to know.   If you are not getting your images from the web, they will probably not send.
The box with the red "X" means that the image cannot be found. Attach your pictures if you want them to send correctly. Copying and pasting will work sometimes, but not always.

Solve : moving programs between users?

Answer»

I downloaded a free typing program on widows xp home. It works fine. HOWEVER when trying to access it from a second user, it is nowere to be found. Both user accounts are administrateors? How can I make this availible to all accounts on XP.

Thanks Pringles3030Why not just install it under the other user?  If that typing tutor program tracks PROGRESS, each user would want to maintain their account anyway, wouldn't they?It should be very simple. Find out where you installed your program (ussually in c:\program FILES). CREATE a shortcut on the desktop to the exe FILE (on the desktop of the 2nd user). This is the "hard" method.
The "easy" method is to copy the shortcut of the program (I suppose you have at least one shortcut, on the desktop of the user with wich you installed the program or in the Start menu) to c:, and then, log in with the second user and move the shortcut to desktop.

Solve : new problem...windows media player 9?

Answer»

sorry about posting another topic so quickly, ive READ previous posts and searched the net for related problems but to no avail. anyway the problem is windows media player 9 FREEZES at random intervals. could be halfway thru a song, after 3 songs, or the second it loads. also when it freezes, sometimes it takes the whole computer down with it. (ex. instead of just WMP 9 freezing it freezes other applications along with it and eventually the whole computer freezes).  :-?

again any help would be greatly appreciated. Google revealed a little, about "non-standard monitors" and such. Could you try upgrading to Windows Media Player 10, and SEE if that helps? Don't know that it will, but upgrading solved a few WinMedia problems for me...im sorry i forgot to tell u im running in win98. the last i read wmp10 only works for winXP. is there any other possible solutions? How about a hint or two about your system. Now we know the operating system anyway.  compaq presario ez2207, 500mhz processor, 127mb ram, 20 gig hd, win98 nvidia geforce2 graphics CARD, soundmax integrated digital audio sound card, and a NIC network card. thats about all of it. could ne of these be conflicting with wmp9?

Solve : Word 2002 not responding?

Answer»

I am running Windows WP and Word 2002 on a Dell desktop.  Word has stopped responding, and it requires me to execute a system RESTORE each TIME to access it.  Word remains functional until I exit the program, but once closed, it will not respond again until I execute another system restore.  I have reinstlled Word, but it MAKES not DIFFERENCE.  How can I correct this problem?  I would start by uninstalling, rebooting and then reinstalling the program.  You didn't say if a restart was involved. How is your malware and virus protection? Have you had any other problems with the machine? What happened prior to this?Well, it looks LIKE I posted my reply in the wrong place.  Thank you for the advice.  I did uninstall the program and rebooted before reinstallation.  So far it is holding.  I will know better by tomorrow when I reboot for the day.  I'm glad it is working now. Keep us posted.  It has now been 48 hours and everything is running as it should.  Thank you so much your assistance.

Solve : how do I get my old login files?

Answer»

My mom rescently deleted all of our login information, so when I created a NEW login account, my desktop, facourites, and all that have been deleted, and now I want them back. How can I do this? I am running Windows XP. I need this because my iTunes was under my old login, and I can't retrieve my library from it. Please help! Thanks.Have a read:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421So will this give me my old desktop back? If so, what will HAPPEN to my current desktop? Also, I can't get to the properties of the folder because it doesn't show up in mycomputer. The location of the folder I want is C:\Documents and Settings\Sean.YOUR-FSYLY0JTWN\

Okay, I read the link you gave me, and it told me to right click on the folder I want to take ownership of, and the security option was not available. I have admin rights as WELL, and I can not disable simple file sharing if I have it.

This is so frusterating, thanks for the help though, I am slowly getting there. This might work:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/getstarted/ballew_03may19.mspx

DocHello all
Look I am in the same trouble as this other guy. My iTunes files are under an old login names 'user' who had admin rights and a password. Then due to complications I had to reinstall Win XP pro and now I cannot get to the files. I tried teh links above (the second one not much help at all) and I got no where because I do not have a security tab on the properties. A photo dump of the options is attached. Please  need these files back.
In XP Pro, I believe you have to turn off idiot file sharing

Open My Computer
Tools-->Folder Options
Tab: View
all the way at the BOTTOM, uncheck "Use simple file sharing"

Good luck! What about just windows XP?by "just" windows xp, do you mean XP Home, or what?
There are several methods to FIX this problem:

1. Make a new admin account (and yes there is a way to do so even without having admin access)
2. Boot off a floppy or something, get the SAM file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\sam) (it contains all the passwords for all the accounts  ) but you can't open it while windows is still running. Get a password cracker and bruteforce it.
3. Now that I think of it...there's a much better way: if you boot off of a MS-DOS floppy or a linux LiveCD, then you should be able to access all the files, even if windows restricts them in some random way.

Hope that helps.
Quote

What about just windows XP?

You cannot use disable the Use Simple File Sharing option or have access to a Security tab for a folder in Windows XP Home.

When you log on as Julia or Sarah, are you able to access your old files, favorites, etc.?  If not, what user names did you log on with before?

Solve : Insufficient Memory Notice and Scandisk WME?

Answer»

I've long been forced to run ScanDisk in safe mode, with no real problems when done this way. Five days ago running it like this is blocked, with a NOTICE that computer has insufficient memory to run the task. I don't get the message performing any other tasks or functions, just ScanDisk. I don't remember doing anything out of the ordinary lately (changing settings, etc.). The problem seems just to have appeared from nowhere. I'm a relative novice, and have tried to find the cause/remedy regarding the problem through Microsoft and community boards, but no luck so far. Tried to run ScanDisk with virtual memory disabled, but that didn't work either. I really have no idea what caused the problem, and no idea what to do to solve the problem. Would really appreciate help/suggestions from more knowledgeable users. In advance, thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Tom B.First, run a disk cleanup, if you can. Then if that doesn't work, go by yourself more RAM and insert it in, you should have one or two slots in the tower open. Also, if you don't need the computer for a while, run a defrag.Try to free some space on harddisk (only if it's near full...). For example, if you have the c: partition of about 10 GB capacity and there are less than 50 MB free space, try to delete (shift+delete) some data, to have at least a few hundreds Megabytes free (at least = more than 100 MB).Thanks for your help. I've GOT tons of disk space and free memory left, so I'm guessing that that the problem lies elsewhere (but just where I have no idea). I'm going to upgrade soon to XP, and am actually hoping that the problem MIGHT go away with the XP disk check (that is that the diskscan anamolies might be a thing of the past). Again, thanks for your time and assistance.

Tom B.How about a detail or two about your computer, what operating system, other processes running, MALWARE protection, etc. and etc.?

Solve : XP Pro logging out user?

Answer»

I have received a complaint that the user is being logged out of his system on a random basis... usually when the screen saver activates.  He has it setup like XP home where the user chooses a LOGIN based on a profile CHOICE.  He states that the computer is sending him to the login randomly.  Is this normal?  How do you turn it off?

thanks."Usually when his screen saver activates" does not sound very random.  Right-click desktop-->Properties-->Screen saver.  Uncheck the BOX "On resume, password protect".thanks for the suggestion.  It isn't the locked desktop the user is getting... it's the fast user switching logout.  Almost like someone is remotely LOGGING into the system and switching users.  What the user meant by screen saver, is that the screen saver is running when he goes back to it, and finds the system logged out.

thanks.Yes, that is exactly the behaviour that I experience on my home system (which is also running XP Pro).  After the screen saver de-activates, we RETURN to the user selection menu (fast user switching).  Upon going back to user's login, the screen saver is running there too.  It's a Windows - uh - "feature"!

I can't for the life of me remember how to select between the fast user switching and the locked workstation behaviour; I think you have a different default depending on whether you're logging into a domain.thanks.. that's what I thought might be happening.  So I wonder if I turn off Fast user switching.. it would stop doing that...

thanks.Probably.The fast user switching login you mention is the XP Welcome screens version of the workstation locked.  If you turn off the welcome screen fast user switching you'll get workstation locked, if it's on you'll get welcome screen.  Turn off the password on resume on the screen saver options.

Solve : desk top hijacking??????

Answer»

I had my desktop hjacked by an adware file.  I ran the noadware scan and removed the file, however I still can't get a normal backgroud picture. Any Ideas?/
When I look at the properties of desk top background, it lists this (file://C:\WINDOWS\warnhp.html) It keeps the background from showing up as it is COMPLETELY WHITE.  when I shut down, right before it shuts down the corect background shows up for a second, so it is there, just underneath the file's screen.  Also when I search for this file, it SAYS it does not exist.

I would GLADLY accept any suggestions. It should be easy enough to find. Could you please download HijackThis, run it on the infected PC, save the logfile, zip it with WinZip, and attach the zip file to your NEXT post? We'll be able to take a look and suggest fixes from there.

Solve : Loggon Problem in XP Home?

Answer»

Hi there.

I wondering whether someone might be able to help me out with a loggon problem I've got with XP Home. I've recently done a fresh reintall of the OS. I was subsequently trying to bypass the mannual logon process that seems to be part of the default set up, but in the process I've completely stuffed up the loggon process.

Unfortunatly, the post exeeds the 5500 word limit, so I've posted the attachment zipped txt document instead.

If someone could have a look I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers,
Matthew.Matthew:

What do you mean by "stuffed up the logon process"?

DocHey DOC. Have a look at the ATTACHED document. I could not FIT in all the information here, but basically it seems like I'm not logged in correctly. It's a complete balls up.

In the attachement I detail what currently happens with a start up in normal mode and then outline what I see in the User Accounts, Control Userpasswords2, and Regedit sections in normal mode and in safe mode so that someone might be able to identify what's wrong and how I might be able to fix things.

Have a look at the attchement tell me what you think.

Cheers,
Matthew.1) Can't you just reinstall Windows?
2) Is your version Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Proffessional? I knew that in Windows XP Home Edition all the users are local administrators or limited users. See here: http://netsecurity.about.com/cs/windowsxp/a/aa042204_2.htm (although I see you have experience in working with windows).
3) When appeared the problem?
4) Have you installed some program before the problem arose?
5) Did you install any program that "tweaks" the Windows registry?
6) How did you end-up modifying the registry?

You give us a lot of details of your problem. Have you create your user in the "normal" way? Control Panel ->users or at windows install?

Of course you don't have to answer to these questions, they are just sugestions.
Hi. Thanks for the reply.

1) Can't you just reinstall Windows?
Yes, but what a nightmare. I've got all this other stuff on there now and it'll takes ages to get it all back.

It's XP Home.

3) When appeared the problem?
After I started trying to bypass the default blue-screen user account loggon procedure.

4) Have you installed some program before the problem arose?
Yes, loads.

5) Did you install any program that "tweaks" the Windows registry?
No. Only mannual regedit stuff, as per below.

6) How did you end-up modifying the registry?
Occording to the directions given in the MS site on 'How to turn on automatic logon in Windows XP':
C:\My Documents\Temp\How to turn on automatic logon in Windows XP.htm

7) You give us a lot of details of your problem. Have you create your user in the "normal" way? Control Panel ->users or at windows install?
I think I created it in the Windows insatll. It's a bit foggy, but I don't recall creating a password only a user name.

If there's no fix for this and I have to reinstall Windows, is it possible to get some consensus on this? I'm reluctant to do this, so I need some sound advice before I trash all my installation work.

Cheers,
Matthew.
A good format and reinstall fixes most Windows problems....for a while.  If you remember the "old" settings in registry, you might be able to undo your modifications. But, as you say, you are unable to use the administrator account, so... Most probably you'll have to use a "hole" in your system and bring it down from another computer (take control on it remotely, as administrator, with no recommended procedures).

I really don't know how to help you. You said that you have problems with your videocard, with your accounts. I don't know. I would make a windows reinstall and after that I would make a disk image (partition image). Free software for this: Linux software (Knoppix or SystemRescueCd with PartImage). You can install programs before or after imaging the partition. Note: you'll need a Linux partition to be able to SAVE the image.mtom......   I read your discription of what you did , and my advice would be to do as GX1_Man has offered and reformat the machine and do a fresh install .
This time when your doing the install and it gets to the part about users..... just enter your name as the Administrator and do not set a password .
Now when it's finished installing , if you go into users accounts in the control panel....... there should be 2 accounts shown......Your name as admin and a guest account .   If you wish to change the way you log in .......click on the log in options.......  If you wish a password .......you can enter that in the user section as well.

dl65  Hi fellas.

Thanks for the replies. Pitty about the bad news. I'll dump all my new stuff onto the second hard drive.

Dl65, just to clarify things. You said:
Quote

Now when it's finished installing , if you go into users accounts in the control panel....... there should be 2 accounts shown......Your name as admin and a guest account .   If you wish to change the way you log in .......click on the log in options.......  If you wish a password .......you can enter that in the user section as well.

Does this mean that I can set up Windows at this point so as to bypass the default blue-screen manual user account loggon interface at start up - that being the one where you have to click on a user picture located on the right half of the screen?

One more thing while I'm at it Dl65, I mentioned another issue with this machine regarding the having to press the F1 BUTTON at start up. At the point during start up before I get into Windows there's a black DOS-like screen. Start up stops there. The screen lists all the drives. The only unusual thing here is a sentence that says: "Floppy disk(s) fail (40)". I get a prompt at bottom of the screen that tells me to "Press F1 to continue, DEL: to entre setup". I've been told that this a CMOS problem and I have to replace the little battery (where ever that is?), but the clock seem to work correctly. Besides, it may the floppy drive warning that's causing the problem. The Floppy drives works fine by the way. I can access data on floppy disks in the drive.

Can you shed some light on this please?

Thanks again for all the input so far.

Cheers,
Matthew.

Usually that error message refers to a issue with the floppy drive , either the drive itself is failing or the flat ribbon cable between the drive and the motherboard has or (is) failing or the connectors on each end are not seated properly. You asked about the battery possibly causing that .......... unlikely , however the CMOS battery is located on your motherboard (it looks like a small silver disc , approx .75" in diameter). They usually last for 5 years plus.
You can probably find one in your local drug store.
The other thing that comes to mind is ....have you made any changes to the bios settings ?

dl65  No, it's not the floppy. He said he can use the floppy without problems after his computer starts. When it starts  :-/ The cable is also without problems... When it has problems, it starts to corrupt the data.
mtom, have you tried to load BIOS default settings?Hey guys.

No, I've not gone anyware near the BIOS. I don't know anything about adjusting BIOS settings. Dangerous stuff as far as I'm concerned, but if you've got any suggestions I'm happy to hear them. I've spotted the CMOS battery, by the way. Thanks for that.

Cheers,
Matthew.

Solve : Programs Available For All Users Logging On?

Answer»

I added a user to a Windows ME computer.  The new user does not have access to Microsoft Office XP Pro & Microsoft Publisher XP.  I LOCATED the exe icon in Windows EXPLORER and CREATED a shortcut.  However, when I attempt to open the program, the message states that the program is not installed for this user (I am not quoting the message EXACTLY because I am not at that computer now).  How can I make all programs available for any new user that I set up on this computer?  Will I have the same PROBLEM in Windows XP Home?

Solve : XP shuts down during boot?

Answer»

Yesterday, some time after installing the latest Microsoft update (KB900485), my XP Pro machine BEGAN to shut down during the boot-up process. I login and the normal Windows gui runs. But while it's loading devices and programs, I get a couple of error messages from some of the programs that normally load (e.g., ZoneAlarm Pro) saying that they're unable to load because the system is shutting down. Then, the system appears to GO through a normal shutdown and power off.

I booted into Safe Mode with Networking (which works FINE) and uninstalled the update, but that didn't help. Since I'm able to run in Safe Mode, I know the problem is not heat or hardware related.

I tried to booting into the last good boot session (I can't remember the exact name of the option from the F8 boot screen), but the system still shut down.

The system is scanned, daily, for spyware using the latest versions of both Ad-Aware and Spy Sweeper (both have current def files). I haven't run a virus scan for a few days, but I don't really think that's the problem here.

I've also removed all of the programs from the Startup folder and DISabled everything that's listed on the Startup TAB of MSCONFIG, but that didn't help.

I tried running SFC in Safe Mode, but it fails saying "the RPC server is unavailable", which I'm guessing is because it's in Safe Mode.

I tried booting using the Debugging option from XP's F8 boot screen to see if the boot.log file would list the offending driver or program last, but the boot.log file in c:\ is more than 2 years old, so either it's saving it somewhere else(?) or it FAILED to create a new one.

I also tried reinstalling Service Pack 2, but that didn't help either.

Does anyone know if there's a way to boot XP so that you're prompted with a "yes/no" option to run (or not run) each driver and program that loads during the boot process? I seem to recall there was a "Boot Confirmation" (or similar) option in Windows 98's F8 boot screen, but it's not listed on XP's boot screen and I can't find it in any of my XP books. If this is a hidden option in XP or if someone has another suggestion, please let me know.
Thank you in advance.
FredThat confirm device option was a function of DOS, which is not present in XP. You either get Safe Mode or the whole thing.

Solve : Serious problems with XP Home?

Answer»

I have a Compaq computer with XP home. It has a 2.4 G Intel chip with 512 MByte ram and lowest speed DSL, a CD R/W and DVD drive.
I had been having issues with a very long boot up time and so defeated all the startup applications about 1 month ago.
This made the computer run just great. I use it mostly for internet acces, some document printing and digital photos.
Yesterday I realized that I had also turned off my Synantec Antivirus. Also yesterday I received the latest Windows download upgrade. I reconfigured the system bootup to enabll all startup proccesses so that I could later run my antivirus. At shutdown the little icon was present to install the up grade and then shutdown. I clicked on this and left. Last night when I first turned the computer on after this shutdown, I had lost all of my drivers. There is no internet access, I cannot print and I cannot even load a disc onto the computer. When you put a dics in it says that the Install Wizard is not installed.

Also, the processor was sitting doing nothing using 100% of CPU. I am at work right now and do not remember the two programs. However two programs, one of which was STARTEAK.exe and another were each using exactly 50% of the CPU.

Any suggestions?

    definition of starteak.exe:

starteak.exe is installed on mainly Compaq workstations. It allows the configuration of the Compaq keyboard's one-touch keys. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

...u know google is just full of informative links.
u might also wanna show us a "hijack this" log, maybe somebody HIJACKED UR desktop? if u do not have "hijack this" u can retrieve it here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

as for why its taking up 50% of ur cpu...i have no freakin clue so heres a smiley with a rainbow umbrella  [smiley=vrolijk_1.gif]

Solve : XP Pro SP.2?

Answer»

P.3 1.0 - 512mb ram - 40gb hard drive.

Did a clean install of XP Pro retail version.  TRIED intalling SP.2 using disk supplied by M'soft and SP.2 instal started without problem, got error message "FILE corrupt", no indication of which file, and instal failed.  Tried installing from another SP.2 disk also supplied by M'soft.  Same result...

Changed to a second machine - P.4 1.6 - 256m Ram, 80g hard drive.  Clean install of XP Pro - no PROBLEMS - installed SP.2 using ONE of the disks mentioned above - no problems.

Changed the cd rw on the first machine - same error message.  Burned a copy of SP.2 & used the burned copy to try to install SP.2 - same error message.

Any ideas why SP.2 gives such a problem on one machine but not another?

Installed XP Pro & SP.2 on a third machine - no problems.

Re-formatted first machine with NTFS then Fat32 but SP.2 WOULD not install on either.  Also tried converting Fat32 to NTFS but SP.2 still dropped out.

Anything else I can try :-?

There must be a reason!! Problem gone but no explanation.

Took the problem to the supplier of the XP Pro disk, he laffed fit to bust until he tried to instal SP.2 after installing Pro from my disk.  He then immediately gave me another XP Pro disk which has installed and allowed SP.2 to instal without problem.  Seems something must have been wrong with the original XP disk but no message of what and why it installed perfectly on two other machines remains a mystery..

Thanks to all who read the post
Did it look like a real disk?Yes, I think it's called hologram(?).  Came in sealed packaging with code sticker etc...

Solve : XP Professional won't start up! urgent help plz?

Answer»

Hi guys this probably a minor problem but I cannot resolve it myself!

I shut down my comp but accidentally pulled out the plug just before it shut down completely. Now when the Windows XP Prof. appears with the blue bar loading it does not start up. It also does not start with "last good configurations" or even safe mode. With safe mode the screen FILLS with text and crashes. I have left it in both states for a while.

Any help will be greatly appreaciated! How did you get to the forum? Also, just keep trying safe mode till it gives you the options. You may have to run a system restore through a floppy. Quote

How did you get to the forum?

I bet he used another computer
It sounds like you may have messed up your registry.  If you have access to programs like Bart PE or ERD commander you can start you computer up off one of these CD's if not you can use the recovery console by putting in your winxp pro cd and hitting R when propted.

what you need to do is copy your old registry over.  To do this you will need to copy the software, system, sam, security, and defalt reg files to the C:\windows\system32\config directory.  Your back up registry files are kept in two locations.
c:\System Volume Information\_restore{D86480E3-24RT-2rewr3-ewr32-2343ewrew}\RP1\Snapshot
or
c:\windows\repair

you will need to have the SHOW all/hidden files option on to see these files and DIRECTORIES.  The regfiles in the repair FOLDER are more generic and may not have all your installed software, the one located in your _restor{some uniqu name} folder is the more recent backup, find the latedst restore point and us its regfile.

also if you get your hands on ERD Commander it has System restore built in, hopw this helps.

Solve : Win XP Pro safe mode failure?

Answer»

Have Pentium4 desktop. Win XP PRO SP2 installed.  Spybot, Microsoft Spyware Webroot Spysweeper 4.5.9.709, NORTON System WORKS and personal firewall 2005 updated today. \
Everything seems to be working correctly, with no problems or error messages present.   I'm having a small problem with a usb connection to my UPS and thought I'd try isolating it in safe mode.  During boot up pressing the F8 key gets me into the screen to select start up mode.  Highlighting Safe Mode and pressing ENTER results in a screen comming up stating "We apoligize but win did not start sucessfully in safe mode etc. etc.  I can't get into safe mode.  Normal start up works OK.
Any ideas? You can try the MSCONFIG way.  Click start, then run.  Type "msconfig" (no quotes).  After hitting OK, click the boot.ini tab.  Then select the box that says "/safeboot."  If this works, don't forget to uncheck the box after your finished in safe mode or it will restart in safe mode again the next time you restart.  Hope this helps.

Solve : OS issues?

Answer»

Ok well yesterday i get this error when i try to reboot my PC - "NTLDR is missing".
I checked this site and found a way to copy the NTLDR files to my PC via the Windows CD.
Now, right after the original screen when i reboot (the one that lets u press del) and around the same place as the error that once was, it just shuts down and reboots again.
Im starting to think that there are more files missing but i do not know wich, first i thought it was doing this because my CPU's temperature was high so i waited but now its fine and still i get the same THING.
I seriously do not want to spend so much money and time and to have everything ive worked on deleted so PLEASE tell me that there is something i can do.
Thank you!Boot into safe mode with F8, then see if you can run a system restore from there to a point a week before this happened.from where do i boot into safe mode?
how do i use system restore?i tried to go into safe mode but i get the same thing - it reboots right after and i cant get into windows. There is no floppy in the DRIVE?No floppy.
But i do have this new option right where it says "press delete to go into settings" where u can press alt+f2 to go into something called EZ bios, where u can take files off a floppy.. maybe there is some sort of problem with the bios.
I updated the NTLDR files from a Home Edition XP and the one i have running is Professional, i just thought i should point that out.
It still just reboots every time after the initial screen and i cant even access the Windows CD anymore.
Oh i hate this so much!!This should fix your problem:

I used Method #2 and worked great.  Let me know if if that works and you have any other issues.

Solve : help please complicated?

how can i change the settings so that when the other COMPUTER administrator changes my account back to limited account, that it requests my password to let him do it, for my conformation? i dont think this can be done, my bro takes it off and gives my account really annoying limited privalages that i cant do very much with, he puts it back to that, because i download i TUNES, and complains that all VIDS run in quick time on SITES, and his audio, runs in i tunes not media player, ive now clicked in the box to stop i tunes being the default media player, also with quick time, but i would really like some advice on how this can be done please? If you have full access, you can make your own account (or edit your bro's). This could help. You cannot restrict an Administrator's powers.  That's the point of being an Administrator.Ok look, u and ur big brother need to cordinate on this. If he is the Admin and not u its because hes older or the computer is his and in any case he knows better so listen to him and dont do what he dosent want u to do and then u wont need to secure ur account.
Its not possible to make him no be able to touch ur account, if hes the admin and ur just the limited account. He can disable ur password and do as he sees fit.
Making Itunes not the default video file program isnt the key. What u need to see is what files Itunes is associated with and then KNOCK off video files, of just right click - properties on the video file that u want to be run by another program and choose it, all files the same will run through that program from now on.

Solve : Can someone who uses PaintShopPro help me, please??

Answer»

I am new here and hope that someone can help me with this problem:
Here is what's been happening that is driving me crazy and I can't understand how to fix it. I just installed PaintShopPro9 after using version 7 for all this time. I have all my files outside of the PSP program so as not to slow it down. I have an extra drive where I keep all my data files. ( E:\\)
The program itself is on C:\\
Here is what I can't figure out how to fix:
I can drag my psp files unto the workspace, I can go to File, Open, then go to the folder and open psp files. I can right click on a psp file and go to Open with and go to PSP9 and open them. I cannot double click on the file and open it like I was always able to do. When I double click on a psp file it brings up an Windows ERROR message "Windows cannot find E:\\PSP files...."  If I change the file extension from .psp to .pspimage I can click on it and it will open.
I have the correct file extensions in the File Format Association box that you get under File, Preferences. Can you please think about this and tell me what might be wrong? I NEED help desperately before it drives me insane.
How does Windows get into the middle of this when I am working only with PSP?
Something else is very weird in my OE that changed a little while ago. I used to have folders on my desktop and when I got something I thought might be good to send to a group I would hit Forward, clean up the messages, address it to the group and Save it to the folder. The next time I wanted to send something I would just open the folder, hit the Send button on the message and off it would go. Now I have no Send button on my saved messages. I looked in the Customize folder and the choice is no longer there. I have asked others and the ones I asked said they don't have Send options EITHER once you save the message. I would think that I had imagined it all if I had not done it for so long and I definitely had a Send button. I belong to one group that only lets you send 10 things every day so I had to do it this way. I know I had that Send button but I cannot find out what happened that I lost it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.File association hassle is tedious.  If you're happy to fiddle, then here's how I would try to fix it:

Windows Explorer-->Tools-->Folder Options.  Click "File Types" tab.  Find the "PSPIMAGE" extension from the LIST; click the Advanced button.  From the actions list, click Open, then Edit.  Note all of the settings in each of the boxes (perhaps cut and paste them to NOTEPAD temporarily).

Cancel those two boxes, then find "PSP" from the extensions list.  Click the "Advanced" button.  In the actions list, if "open" is not in bold, select and then click "set default".  Next, click "Edit", and copy across the details that you saved in Notepad.  Click OK to clear each dialogue box.  You should now be able to double-click PSP files.

Re your Outlook Express problem: create a new message to your group; click save, then close it.  The new message should be in your draft folder.  Within that folder, make as many copies of the message as you like.  (Click the message, then Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V.)  To send a message, double-click it from the drafts folder.  It should definitely have a "send" button.

Solve : remove temp files on XP Home?

Answer»

Where all can a person safely remove temp files or cab files from, besides what CCleaner and windows disk cleanup and cleaning temp files in the INTERNET options/general tab?

A friend has an HP laptop with XP Home. He is bombarded every 6 minutes (yes almost exactly 6 minutes) with 4 slightly different variations of trojans trying to enter his computer. Avast catches them and stops them before they actually enter his computer. Avast tells him to abort the connection, he does and about 6 minutes later all 4 are back. This will HAPPEN even when just the deskstop showing. He has a wireless connection.

I have had him in safe mode with system restore shut off, he has ran the Avast, Ewido, Adaware, Spybot, CCleaner, Microsoft Anti spy (all updated), disk cleanup and so on in safe mode.  No good.

Could there be a hidden temp file or cab file, that is not showing as a virus in his computer, that is sending outbound info thats saying "attack me" to somewhere else? I know that maybe SOUNDS dumb.

He has Kerio for a firewall. Don't know the version. Here http://www.hackerwatch.org/probe/ scan your computer for weaknesses in your firewall then report back. Do the Simple Probe scan and the Port Scan.shoon81
 http://www.hackerwatch.org/probe/ very nice website

 Fordtruckmaniac
if the pc "infected" is easy to attack (according to the  http://www.hackerwatch.org/probe/)
meaning the the firewall is weak in this case try ZONE ALaRM
if not, try this

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate LINK if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=61 ). Make sure to close any internet browsers that may still be open.

Run Cleanup in safemode
CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders. It does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, click the Close button

Now restart your pcThis computer is a state away from me and we are doing this over the phone.

Will give this all a shot.  Probably tonight.

Thanks, Fordtruckmaniac...... It might be prudent to have your friend record the names of the trojans ...so we will know what we're dealing with ....It would also be a good idea to go into the control panel ....click on folder options ....and then the view tab .....make sure that show hidden files and folders are ticked ...... then click apply and ok......... Also it would be a good idea to have your friend D/L hijackthis and post a logfile .....trojans , if thats what they are dealing with are extremely crafty and hijackthis is a very good diagnostic tool.

dl65  Well to continue this saga.

When I got back ahold of him that evening, someone else talked him into disabling Avast and let them come on in and fight with them once they made it in.

So thats what he did.

He cleaned them out after that. And claims the warnings have stopped. :-/

I don't know :-?

thanks,There are so many ways this could be bad... Quote

Solve : How to fix corrupted desktop icons????

Answer»

No. It didn't HELP, Dilbert. This was one of the things Microsoft support had me
try yesterday. I just tried it again as you suggested, but still no CHANGE. The new icons I SELECT still have that bold color with the shinny EDGES. When I go
back to the original icons, they still LOOK the same way (corrupted).

Solve : Small bug??

Answer»

On almost any window from hovering my mouse or clicking on any FILE, drop down list thing it leaves a mark.
It's not a problem... just wondering if i'm the only one, plus it does look a little ugly

(turns WHITE if i click or leaves a mark around FONT if i hover. Plus it's still there arfter a min/maximize)
WinXP SP2. It's been like this for long, can't remember how long exactly...
Thanks for any replysThis might happen when certain programs havea bug... When did you notice this was starting?

FlameI'm not sure how long becuase i've just been ignoring it. Maybe a month ago, or when SP2 was released (when ever that was).
Maybe that triggerd it? Doubt i'll ever find out whats doing it.

I thought i'd just MAKE a thread to SEE if i'm the only one this happens to...
It wouldn't be linked to anything serious would it?
If not then i'm not too botherd, just wondering.

Solve : lost DDR RAM??

Answer»

Right after I formated my computer somehow my 512 DDR ram became a 480 DDR ram.  Can someone please tell me how a PC would do this to my chip?

That wouldn't be the answer though, since under system it says how much ram you have TOTAL not what is being used.  I also checked all my hardware and STUFF.  It's all 480 DDR.  Before it was 512 and I was even using a 256mb video card and still 512 ddr.  I'm thinking when I formated the PC it MESSED up my chip. No, software can not alter hardware. With an eMachine, I'm hardly surprised you have problems. Please tell me two things:

1. Have you or anyone else opened the case since the format?
2. How many memory chips do you have?

I'm thinking we'll need to troubleshoot for faulty memory. If this is the case, know that it was not caused by a format.Your screencard is using 32mb of RAM.

If you go to system info (START > all programs > accessories > system tools > system info)

It will report the correct amount of RAM.

Solve : game lockup?

Answer»

Since I am four SCORE in age, please don't criticize me for having a Dell 4100
desktop w/Windows 98SE,about 6 yrs old. It came w/ Freecell, solitaire,
Hearts and Minesweeoer pre loaded. Recently, the Freecell game locked up
after it APPEARED on the screen. A row of 8 cards comes up and the cursor
becomes inactive. The other 3 games are OK. Previous to this problem, I had
copied these games to a FLOPPY. I get the same result when TRYING to run off
the floppy. Is there a solution to this dilemma ? I will gladly send a "Smiley"
to the genius w/the answer............DumbelGo to add/remove in control panel and go to the section for Windows components, then remove the games, then REBOOT and add them back in the same manner. Quote

Thanx for the tip,GX1,but I already tried it, w/neg. results. the part  I don't
understand is that I madea floppy copy of the 4pak game B4 there was any
problem and I played FREECELL off of it OK.  It froze up the start of a game taking it off the hard drive. After that, the floppy would not work either.
This also occurred after removing Norton and installing Panda for virus prot.

Solve : IE, WMP and MSN all auto-exit?

Answer»

I was recently tinkering around with my registry deleting what I thought to be BAD entries, and since I've rebooted my MSN, WMP and IE all are *censored*. Also I can't use search and find folders in My Computer.
I believe I must've deleted something in my Reg.. I'm using the reg I backed up (the original) now but stuff still doesn't work. I've reinstalled msn but to no effect.

My msn signs in, then exits after a few seconds. (this may be as soon as someone MESSAGES me or something, i think it's triggered)

My WMP doesn't load.

IE loads the page then automatically quits.

Search and find folders in My Computer makes closes the open 'My Computer' page and reloads my TASKBAR...

Today I was deleting all my nvidia driver remains from my dllcache and the registry (all FILES containing the terms nv4 and nvcpl + folders/files with the term nvidia/nv4),  I also reinstalled directX and a new pair of chipset drivers and drivers for my ATI card. I'm not sure if any of that could've contributed to my problems now...

Could someone help me out? I really need it..

Solve : Unpartitioning hard drive in xp?

Answer»

My computer's hard drive is partitioned into C: (OS & programs) and D:(empty). How can I join both drives to have just the C: drive? While installing Windows ONE Care I got a message about low disk space and would like to join C: & D: into one drive(C:).The system is FAT,can I convert to NTSF also?
Thanks for any and all input,LouYou will either need to backup your data and create partitions like you wish and reload Windows,or USE some third party tool like Partition  Magic, etc. You can convert a drive to NTFS using either of those methods. You can do this part WITHIN XP to your current drive, but it will not solve your other problems.Thank you,GUsually, you can install programs on D, rather than C.  Thought I'd mention this in case you did not know.   This could preclude the need to combine the two partitions.Yes SOY I did know, but thanks. Quote

Yes Soy I did know, but thanks.
So then, why the concern about having the two partitions instead of one?  Many people prefer to have a partitioned drive.  By keeping your data files on a non-OS partition, you won't lose your data if you ever have to format your OS partition and reinstall the OS.

How large is each partition?  How are you currently using them?  Is your My Documents folder on C?  You can move that to D.  I guess just being used to having everything on C: drive.Yes everything is on C: drive, and I am concerned about moving stuff AROUND(access later).I've decided to follow previous advice & backup and reinstall. Thanks,Lou
