Solve : Help ! Huge Problem !?

Answer»

I just tried a few linux distros and erased XP. I decided to return to XP and I restored my system. The restore finished and it boots but I can't CONNECT to the internet, my SCREEN resolution is 1024x786 instead of 1280x1024 and it LOOKS really bad and I can't set up a wireless connection. What should I do ? I can't do anything ! Should I try to format and then restore again ?Can anyone help ? Is it a drivers problem because under Device Manager it shows my ethernet controller as an unknown device. How can I make everything normal again Anyone ?You should boot from XP CD and delete all partitions then create a new one with XP CD and install fresh, that will work.

CigarmanI don't have an Xp CP. Only a system restore. When I boot it I get the following options, "Press R to do a full restore." and "Press Q to quit."And I suppose this is a laptop? And probably an HP?

Solve : Help (I'm New!)?

Answer»

Ok - When I started up my computer it took me to a blue screen SAYING, "UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME." I tried going to safe mode and it just takes me to the blue screen again.

I tried entering my Windows XP CD and it won't take me to the Windows Recovery screen. Instead it takes me to, "Windows Startup has been interrupted to save you files..." and blah blah blah. I try going up to the Safe Mode on that screen, but my keyboard won't move.

As you can see I'm in a bit of a pickle here. Any help please!?This error can be due to a number of factors including a corrupted boot.ini file.
Your recovery console problem needs to be addressed first though. How are you attempting to run the recovery console? Are you pressing the "R" key at the first prompt?
Is your XP CD a RETAIL version or an OEM or version or restore CD? Quote

Well, I inserted the disk while the blue screen was on and then turned of my computer manually. When I turn it back on, I hit R and it still takes me to, "Windows Startup has been interrupted to save you files..." and blah blah blah. The disk I am using is the Windows XP Disc. I guess retail version?

ALSO, thank you so much for replying!I forgot to add that when I get to the Windows Advanced Options Menu, I'm not able to move my arrow keys to any of the options. In other words, my keyboard won't work! It won't move up or down! Someone please help! I'm on my old computer right now and it is very very slow and I'd LIKE to use my other computer as quickly as possible. If it's a USB keyboard, remove it and use a standard PS/x keyboard.
Does it function now?Use recovery console. Once you log into the recovery console type the following command "chkdsk /f". Once the scan is complete then reboot the computer. You should be able to log into Windows.

There is another way. This option tends to be very successful.

Quite simply take the Hard Drive out of your computer, then go to a friends house, that is a friend who owns a Windows XP computer, and with permission open up his/hers computer, disconnect their CD-Rom drives, and plug your hard drive in with theirs, of course make sure the cable is seated correctly and that the power connector is plugged in.

Your friends computer will now boot up and run Chkdsk before it logs into Windows, let this run & complete. Take your Hard Drive home and test. This method has a good success rate.

However if neither of these fix your problem, do a repair of Windows XP.

1) To begin insert your Windows XP CD and reboot you computer. A message "Press any key to boot from CD....." will appear, press the space bar to continue.
2) Setup will now inspect your computer hardware and configuration.
3) Setup now prepares your computer for install.
4) From this menu press "ENTER" (NOT "R") to begin the repair install.
5) Windows XP License agreement, read, and if you agree press "F8" to continue, press "ESC" if you disagree. If you disagree setup will finish.
6) Now select the operating system you wish to repair, if as in most occasions there is only one, the just press "R" to continue.
7) Setup will now make some checks on the system and then prepare files that are needed to be copied.
Setup will now initialize your XP configuration.
9) Setup now needs to reboot your computer. Press "ENTER" to save yourself a 15 second wait.
10) Boot will recognize that the XP CD is in the drive, DO NOT press any keys, let setup bypass the CD boot.
11) Follow on screen instructions for the rest.

As you have repaired Windows, there should be no drivers to install. Your files should be safe, but you should always check out device manager for unknown devices, likely items are Network Cards, Sound Cards, Printers, Scanners, Graphics Cards, Digital Cameras, plus any other item you have.

I hope all this makes sense and helps you. It's a not a USB keyboard, its a PS/x keyboard.

Yes, is makes sense to me, but it doesn't say, "Press any key to boot from CD.....," for me. Instead it make to the countdown to select any of the options it give me. The options are, "Safe Mode, etc.." The problem is that I can't select any of the options because my keyboard won't work.

Thanks for replying though! Any other IDEAS?Go to BIOS and change the boot order. (to get into BIOS, press DEL, F2 etc depending on your computer model look here for yours: http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/reinstall-reformat-winxp/enter-BIOS.html)

Have I mentioned that my keyboard won't work?

Romero:

You will need to use your keyboard, or use a different one that does work. On some computers, there is no support for using a USB keyboard when you try to enter Safe Mode or the Recovery Console. Does your keyboard have a round plug or a rectangular plug that you insert into the computer? If it is a rectangular plug, do you see a round connector in the back of the computer? (This round connector may be a light shade of purple or have a picture of a keyboard next to it.)

If you are using a keyboard with a rectangular plug, then it is a USB keyboard. Try buying one with a round plug and connecting it to the computer (you can buy one at a store like Wal-Mart for about $10 (USD). See if that keyboard works, and then check back with us.

If that's the case you're pretty much stuck. A USB keyboard may work if the BIOS supports it and if the BIOS is already set to use USB keyboard support.

Help -
I have a Dell Dimension T500, with an Intel Pentium III, 500 Mhz, 384 MB Ram, RUNNING Windows XP Home Edition, SP2. Recently, my system stopped being able to do Windows Automatic Update. When I try to use automatic Update, I GET the error dialogue box that says, "network policy settings prevent you from getting updates from this website for your computer" And it says that I have error 0x8DDD0003. When I click on the 'help' LINK that tells me the fix, it says that I have to access the gpedit.msc to correct the problem (since I am the system administrator). So I click on Start, Run, and type in gpedit.msc, then click ok and windows says it can't find that file. How can i fix this?Gpedit.msc is only available in the Pro version of XP. See here...

Solve : mulitiple "installs" of windows XP Pro?

Answer»

I started out with windows installed on my C:\ drive which was an older model Western Digital 9 GB and that was working fine slow but fine i had a second drive a SATA Western Digital 200 GB (E:\) I decided to install windows XP Pro on the second drive. The anoying thing is i still had all my programs it just wouldn't accept them as programs. So I was lazy (and motivated by my mother *shiver*) to switch it BACK (i had never unistalled the other windows) but after i deleted windows off the other drive it was trying to continue to boot to the second drive so i deleted the windows partition on that drive it still tried to default boot to that drive plus now it wasn't showing up in my computer. I need both these things fixed before my mom KICK my can. I haven't done anything to the E drive for fear of erasing data i need and KNOW is still there but i just can't see. HELP!!!!!!That is because the boot.ini file was adjusted with the second installation and now will have to be changed back. What does yours say?I have no FREAKING idea!
How do i find outLook for the file in the root of the C drive (not in any folders) and type in exactly what it says when you view it.can i have more detail?

Solve : Computer Energy Saving?

Answer»

Good Day: Couldn't find tne subject to cover my Q so here goes.I have WindowsME. IE6., Firefox.,ISP is Cable Modem. Also have a Hardware Firewall/router
Q. Since installing the hardware Firewall, when I hibernate for the night only some of the green LED lights go off on the Firewall. And all the green and activity lights STAY ON on the Modem. To me, this means that I am not completely shutting down and therefore NOT saving energy.
As my ssystem is connected to a Surge Protector, would it be better to shut off at this level?
                                          EdmundoR

If the modem is on you are using energy. If the computer is on you are using energy, though less with hibernation.

To be the most energy efficient, you would shut both items down.i don't think i quite understand but as far as i know when you hibernate your computer is shut off COMPLETELY because once i did hibernte and had to unplug the power for some reason and it still "woke up" fine and my friend put it in hibernate when he movet to another house so turn off the surge bar and wait for the modem\router\w\e to be in the same state they were when you shut the comp off b4 you turn it back onGood Day:
Att: Soviet G. and GX1 Man:
Thanks for your messages. I haven't anything to report on results yet as I wanted to get some advice first. But I will try switching off at the Surge Protector and shut everything down that WAY. I dont mind the longer wait in re-booting so long as I conserve energy!
EdmundoRHow are the modem and firewall connected to your PC? By ethernet cable or USB?Just so you know, if you turn on and off your computer alot everyday, you might as well leave in on since all that on/off times strains the PSU alot.. and a new PSU costs alot more then itty bitty bits of electricity.Att: Robpomeroy:
My Modem and Firewall/router are connected to each other >>surge protector>>cable ethernet. Does this help you to answer my Q ?
To re-cap, as I hibernate to save a little bit of energy, the fact that my modem lights stay lit and the firewall/router also [some], indicates maybe I am not. This is why I am considering switching off at the Surge protector nightly which should turn off all systems. I am aware of the argument re shutting down v. always on, [TN2COOL's msg--Thanks TN2COOL ] but would appreciate your comments.
                            EdmundoR

So basically the router and firewall are powered independantly of the computer (rather than through a USB port, for example). In fact both these devices are computers in their own rights (they just don't look like computers), so you'd need to switch them off separately. By unplugging. And just to add a little more confusion, high speed devices such as modems. routers etc are designed to be left connected and powered up. A possible downside of disconnecting may be a change of IP.

It's really down to user choice but I suspect that there are umpteen other things that you could do around the home/office that would save far more energy. Thanks MENTOR------for making my little problem progress to the 'gigantic 'stage!!
You have "put the ball in my court" as the adage goes. For one who is always cautious when DEALING with complicated TECH units like PCs I dig the 'user choice' decision. Oh, and Yes, there ARE many things in the home one can do to conserve Energy,Fluorescent lamps. Turn gas furnace down, etc. [Been there. Done it! ] But thanks for the reminder.
Not quite sure what you mean with the.."maybe a change of IP". Do some do this? Regards, EdmundoRThe change of IP is meant that when you disconnect with your ISP service, the IP that they register you under is scrambled and then refreshed, giving you a totally different one, it serves many good purposes like to deter/confuse anyone who's trying to get into your network, ect.

Here's a power saving tip, swtich to AMD.. Most AMD CPU's use about 30w's less then the P4's, thus giving off less heat also. If you calculate out the power used, (P=W/T), you'll find you can save lots of $$!Yes, if you kept that PC running 24 hours a day for a year, with the AMD PROCESSOR, you would save approximately $15 a year over an equivalent Intel. Att: TN2COOL and Robpom:
Hurrah! Seems I am on the winning side after all as I do have an AMD CPU.
Soon I will be hearing the jangle of coin in my pockets that I have saved . I appreciate the input on the pros & cons on this subject you all have raised.
                  Thanks, EdmundoR

Hah, I don't know where you live rob, but electricity in California is not cheap, they charge ALOT.. maybe you live in one of the TVA dam areas? I heard the government charges really cheap there..
That tiny amount of money is better then nothing though, so I think the AMD still wins!

Switching to LCD would also save money too I think.

Solve : How to permently delete things from recycle bin?

Answer»

When you DELETE something from the recycle bin in windows it doesn't get deleted. How can I delete all of that stuff ?Empty recycle Bin?And holding down shift when you delete something CAUSES the recycle bin to be bypassed. Use with care! When you empty the recycle bin, files are not erased from your hard disk. The space they used is flagged for reuse but the file may not be overwritten for some time depending on how actively you write to your hdd.

To erase the files which have been "deleted" use a program to overwrite them such as Window Washer (there are many other progs). Even after overwriting the "deleted" files good forensic programs might be able to recover the data. The chances of that occurring depends on how many times you overwrite the files.

Are you waiting for the FBI or CIA to come calling :-?

Good luckIt didn't look like the OP was wanting file shredding...? Quote

OP's post "When you delete something from the recycle bin in windows it doesn't get deleted. How can I delete all of that stuff ?"

Yeh, well it's all in how the OP's query was interpreted. I interpreted it to mean that he KNOWS that deleting a file from the Recycler does not actually delete the file and wanted to know how that is achieved.

Maybe he'll come back at us to clarify - maybe not.

Yes, I see your point.Sticky Keys? Sticky Keys?

Solve : Windows XP Password lost?

Answer»

Hi there,

I am having a huge problem. I let a person go for stealing who worked for me and I cannot get into their computer Administrators password.

the computer has two accounts:

One is the ADMINISTRATOR and I don't know the password and the second is a standard user with no authority and no passowrd. I have used the computer through the user and tried a few things through the net to gain access to the admin side but in most cases it won't let me run a program as I dont have authority it states.

I tried a site where it asked me to make a flobby disk which i did but when i ran it on the site it stated there was no password to find. I am not sure what to do.

Anyone out there be able to help?

Kal

Please help with suggestionsWho set this computer up and why do you, as a boss, allow users to set their own passwords without you KNOWING them?
There are ways around this but you'll need to convince me that you're genuine.Well thanks for the reply but not sure what you are asking. i have a small office of four computers. i am not a computer expert and i had a company come in and set up the next work years ago. We are running XP on each machine and each user has their own password. Maybe I should have given them to them but I am thinking they could have STILL changed them so not sure how that would have helped.

Further more I ran a program during BOOTUP and it stated that the password was probably locked. It said it unlocked it and changed the password to blank but when i reboot it is still locked.

So not sure what to do.

Solve : Help with 2 OS'?

I bought a computer from my friend and it came with 2 OS' on it. XP Home, and XP Pro. I was wondering how i can delete XP Home without deleting Both of them because i only have the XP Home CD and i can't reinstall XP Pro if i delete everything.

ThanksWait, you want to get rid of the OS you have a CD for? That could cause IMPLICATIONS in the future, you know.

Ask yourself: Do you really need Pro rather than Home? If the answer is no, format the puppy and reinstall Home (ASSUMING all data needed is backed up)

If you do need XP Pro... then someone who has experience with two OSes at once will be around shortly.

/me signs offYOu must have 2 partitions to install 2 OS, I assume there is no data you want to keep as you've just bought this from a friend, find out which partition each OS are installed on, delete which ever one you don't want and you need to edit your startup display by type in MSCONFIG at the run command select the boot.ini tab

CigarmanA dual boot Home/Pro system? Bonkers.

Presumably you're admitting that you have no licence to use the Pro version. So I'd FRY the whole hard drive and START again with Home. Unless you're connecting to a corporate network, you probably don't need Pro's extra features anyway.

Solve : Networking - Windows XP?

Answer»

I am having a strange networking problem. I have 2 laptop computers with wireless cards and a desktop computer hardwired into a Linksys WRT54G router. When having networking problems recently (none of them would WORK with each other), I renamed the workgroup and re-ran the networking wizard directly from the Windows XP CD. I now can network between the 2 laptop computers wirelessly, but neither of the laptops will network with the desktop. I can't even print from the laptops when the desktop is on. I have a DELL desktop, Dell laptop and Sony laptop. I have disabled the windows firewall on all computers and don't know what else to do.

Thanks for any help.

P.S. I have updated all firmware and drivers for the router and laptop wireless cards.Running the Windows Networking Wizard can cause more problems than it solves.
Does each computer have an IP?
Can each computer ping the others?I knew I forgot to mention something. Yes, Linksys had me ping each computer from each other with their separate IP addresses, and it worked fine. They concluded that the router was not to blame. I wish I knew another way to network computers, but the Windows Wizard is all I know. It has worked in the past for me. I don't know what is going on now, but I had hoped renaming the workgroup and rerunning everything directly from CD would solve it completely. :-?Where is the printer connected to?
Since you can ping each PC sucessfully which means your network can communicate with each other and this is not a network problem. Did you re-name any of your computers? Particularly the one your printer is connected to, if the name changes you'll have to remap your shared printer to the new name. e.g. the old unc PATH =\\wotsit\epsonsty and the new name=\\thingy\epsonsty
Provide more info on your ip, submask and was your router act as DHCP to your 3 PCs?

CigarmanWhat I did is start from scratch and re-run all 3 computers from the XP disc. I renamed the workgroup and some of the other computers.

I just found some more info after getting advice from someone else who asked me to run the command \\(desktop IP address. Doing this on one of my laptops showed me the desktop's files and allowed me to print from the desktop printer. Doing this on the other laptop did the same thing (haven't tested print yet), but when I go to my network places, it will not show the desktop there. When I try to have it show workgroup computers, I get the attached error message.

Solve : Free Virus Programs.?

Hey all. I'm looking for a free virus program for my girl's computer. I have AVG and ran it, but for some reason I think there is still a virus on it. For some reason pinball on her computer won't work, it GETS to the main screen but then shuts off. I tried looking for a site that has the pinball game that comes standard for most Windows but can't find it.

Any help would be great!AVG is one of the best out there, I don't see how it wouldn't get rid of all infections.

Other good free virus scanners are TrendMicro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus

IMO

[edit]If you want a good trojan SCANNER use ewido SECURITY suite, it is VERY good. Also, for adware/spyware ad-aware personal SE[/edit]AVG is fairly good for a free solution. It's certainly not a top ranking solution.
You'll find links to other free AV packages here and here. Read up as much as you can before finally deciding on a package.
Don't forget that malware (Spyware, trojans, hijackers etc) protection is at least as necessary as virus protection these days.

If you think you're still infected, carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and ATTACH it rather than post it.

Solve : Optimizing My System's Proformance?

Answer»

Hi, I'm using a Gateway Laptop with Windows Media Center Edition, 512 of ram, 2.2 ghz AMD Processor, and ATI Radeon Xpress CARDS. I want to know how I can OPTIMIZE my system. So far I have:

1. I have a decent firewall + virus scanner (Both McAfee).
2. I scan for spyware daily with two different scanners.
3. Use System Mechanic and Tune Up Utilities to optimize system proformance.
4. Removed unneeded visual stuff + LOTS of registry tweaks
5. TCP Optimizer to make my high speed internet very fast.
6. Remove unneeded windows services + programs

Is there anything else I can do ? Overclock my processor ? Use any other programs ?

Another Thing: System Idle Process says to be using 95-99 % of my processor but the light is not blinking...what should I do about it ?

Thanks I think that's as fast as you're going to get, hopefully with no spyware/adware SLOWING things down. McAfee takes up some resources, though not as much as Norton.

You are not going to be able to overclock a Gateway, and certainly not a laptop. Who put that notion in your mind? Quote

Nothing. That's good. System Idle Process is just there to make the total come to 100%. So, if System Idle Process shows 99%, that means other processes are only using 1%.

Solve : Computer only boots to safe mode, now what?!?

Answer»

Hi,
My computer will only boot to Safe Mode and I have no clue what to do now. I tried to search on this and found some vague info on "fixing problems" once you are already in safe mode, but no specifics on just what to do.

Here is what I've tried so far...
Ran AVG virus check...no viruses
Ran SpyBot and Ad Aware...no spyware

I noticed that some error messages were coming up as Windows was loading once in a while (before the "safe mode" incident). Stupidly, I ignored them and did not write them down. I do know that they started with HP... so perhaps something to do with my HP printer?

Of course my husband has some data on the computer that has not been backed up so I do not want to do anything that could prevent me from recovering this data (lots of pictures!)

Some basic info:
Compaq Presario
Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.2222A
319 MB RAM

Please help!
Thanks so much!
JulieCheck your Device Manager for warnings first.
Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager.
If you find any warnings remove the drivers & reboot to allow Windows to detect & install drivers.
You can then update to the latest.
Let us know what you find.OK, I did not SEE any "warnings" in the Device Manager but I do see that under the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" there is one that has a red "X" over the graphic for: "%USB/UKNOWN.DeviceDesc%". This is repeated 3 times. Is this what you mean by "warnings"?

Thanks!Uninstall the drivers for the devices with the red Xs.
If your HP printer is USB then disconnect it too.
Re-boot & see if you can get into normal mode.OK...did that and it still will only boot to safe mode :-/

JulieWhat happens when you select Normal Mode to boot with?It ties to reboot, but then goes back to the Startup menu.JulieC..... please do this .......... click start , then run and in the run box type....
msconfig and ENTER ......... when the new window opens ........
You should see Startup options .......
Normal Startup
Diagnostic Startup
Selective Startup

Which one has the green mark in the circle ?

dl65 Well...it says "selective" but I've repeatedly clicked on the "normal" startup and apply". It prompts me to re-boot but the problem repeats itself after I re-boot...then when I go back and check this, the "selective" button is highlighted again. Here's a BIT of light READING for you , BTW, do you have a win98 disk?
http://www.jobcyclone.com/pcservicing/win98.phpPress the F8 key at boot to bring up the startup menu.
Choose "Option 4 - Step By Step Confirmation".
Press "Y" to every prompt, NOTING each driver etc that's loaded.
When the startup fails, you've found your culprit. Good News!!!
Thanks to all, I read all the light reading and all hope was lost after trying the troubleshooting tips to no avail, but when I did the "step by step" on the start-up, it worked when I said no to the AVG start-up. So my computer started, I was able to retrieve all the photos (yeah!) and of course it crashed again and the whole "safe mode" nonsense started again. I guess it's time to update my computer!

Thanks everyone!
JulieUpdate? Why? If you have all your data safely backed up, then you've nothing to lose. You could simply format and reinstall or you could boot to Safe Mode and start troubleshooting by removing AVG.
If you need help in this process, just yell!

Solve : Reversed alphabetic arrangement ??

Answer»

Hallo ever1 here r my COMPUTER details:
WINDOWS XP Home Edition (German but it doesn't really MAKE a difference) SP2------512 MB RAM--------3GHz------Kaspersky Security Suite

And here is my problem:
When e.g downloading this windows appears:
...but why is the alphabetical order the wrong way ? It's harder this way and I'm not used 2 it ... How Can undo or repair this useless change ? Plz help.

P.S I already scanned my system--> no ADWARE,Spyware,Viruses... (had Norton before Kaspersky...wasn't really impressed). :-/what do you mean in the wrong way?Have you tried right-click -> arrange icon by -> name ?
Everytime you choose this it will toggle the alphabetical order between ascending and DESCENDING. Quote

Have you tried right-click -> arrange icon by -> name ?
Everytime you choose this it will toggle the alphabetical order between ascending and descending.
Yeah I've tried that-->it changes once then after I open the next directory, I've got the same situation as before Ok, let's assume you have a directory of C:\ABC\DEF

In ABC, icons are arranged descending, when you right-click -> arrange icon by -> name, it changed to ascending.

Then you go into DEF, the icons are arranged descending as well. You changed it with the same way.

When you go one level up back to ABC, are the icons arranged ascending as you've changed it or descending as before?
Yup Michael u got that right..and I don't know how that happened cause' at that time I didn't install any new sofware :-?Open an Explore window. Set it up to the view (Details, List etc) that you want to use and set the display ordering (Name, Size etc) and it's direction.
Now select Tools>Folder Options>View and set it up as shown below. When satisfied, hit the "Apply" button, then the "Apply To All Folders" button and OK it.Jeronimo, which is right?

Does Backdate's suggestion work?Backdate's version works ! :-) It's the permantent solution.
Michael
Ur solution worked temporarily, not permant

Thanx all !

Solve : Info. about computer?

I apologize if this is in the WRONG forum, I wasn't sure if it belonged here or in 'Other'

Anyway, where can I see information about my computer like the Available memory/free memory/used memory hard drive info/available space and all that?If it's XP, use the "System Information" tool. It's probably listed under Programs>Accessories>System Tools. You might also wish to D/L Everest from......... in addition to the direction as PROVIDED by Backdated.

It will provide you with LOTS of info on your system

Solve : .exe has encountered errors?

Answer»

I am getting a lot of .exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are SORRY for the inconvenience messages.

What CAUSES this to happen and how can I get them to stop? I am running an XP operating system.

ThanksThe prime suspect is viral/malware activity. Carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it RATHER than post it.Yah thanks for the reply, but it is not Viral/Malware. Quote

Yah thanks for the reply, but it is not Viral/Malware.

You seem very sure of that...... Why? What have you done to eliminate that possibility with so much certainty?
For one it does not have access to the internet. We have done a virus,spyware/bot scan and all checks out.

It is a BRAND new Dell with XP and runs just one software program. If it's brand new, has not been connected to a network and only certifiably clean and suitable software has been installed, then it's ALMOST certainly a hardware fault. Check the Event Viewer logs.

Out of interest, what tools did you use to scan for malware etc? surf75..... If this PC is brand new and has never been connected to the internet ....I would be contacting Dell .
BTW , the one software program that it runs ....... did it come from Dell with the new pc ?

I am very new to the IT world and I have 100 computers to rename on my network. I was told that you could potentially rename the computers USING a batch file. Is this possible if so can anyone give me some help with this. UNLESS your PCS receive their names via DHCP, I THINK you were told wrong.we do use DHCPYes, but are the PCs configured to take their names (within the DOMAIN) via DHCP?

Solve : HP, HArd Drive switch to new hp question.?

Answer»

Ok. I had an old hp computer with a HUGE hard drive.
I recently got a new hp computer and installed my hard drive as the primary instead of the pre installed one.
The comp boots up ok, but when it starts up xp it bugs out and restarts or sends me to the windows dos prompt.
I called hp and they were charging an outrageous price to help me, but they said that it was not too hard.
This makes me think I can do it manually.
Anyone had this problem bvefore that can guide me through.
ThanksWhat OS does the new drive have? If you want both, did you set the new one to SLAVE?They are both XP. Both home edition.
The tech person said LIKE my old hard drive was coded for my old hp MOTHERBOARD and i would havta change something to make it compatible with the new motherboard.
Im not using my new hard drive at all, my old one is set as the primary.Do you have a real Windows CD or just some restore CD? The chances are slim you will get this to WORK easily as it has drivers, etc. based on the machine it was installed in.

Some people have had success with a repair install, but without a real Windows CD....

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

What did they want to charge you, by the way?Like 35$ its silly considering i have ALL hp products, they wont help me, says its outa warranty.
I have the repair disk for hp, not the actual windows disk. And thats why I cant get windows tech SUPPORT from microsoft =(
Ill try to repair windows from the cd, is there a easy way to do that without reformatting?
I do not want to take the chance. I have too much on the hard drive to lose.

Solve : Automatic startup programs.?

Answer»

How do you stop certain software from automatically starting up when you re-boot your PC?

I also finished my daughters PC and conneced the wireless hub/router and everythigns working fine. I put the same ad-aware,spybot,defender, avg and ewido setup I have on my pc on hers. There is one thing I can't figure out. In here startup area (lower right hand of screen) a thing called PC Booster always comes up when re-booted. I looked in add/remove progams and no such entry exists. All 5 virsus/trogan/ad etc etc software comes up finding nothing.

One last thing on her PC it is constantly saying virtual memory running low pc will adjust now.

She is running XP on a Gateway PC.

Thanks in advance.Simply uninstall PC Booster in this case! Doing so will probably eliminate the VM problem as well.
Windows has it's inbuilt startup configuration in MSConfig but it's really inadequate. Hijackthis is a very useful tool for controlling startup and other items.Backdrafted,

I did look for PC Booster in add/remove programs I also did a search for it, to no avail. Iwill download hijackthis and if it shows up remove it from there. I will also try the ms config option also.

Thanks for light in the dark.

Peace,
MPBackdrafted!
I wish these bloody Yanks would learn to spell..... It's DRAUGHTED!
Why make spelling easy when, as in Limeyland, you can completely baffle everyone.Laughing my bloody *censored* off!

So SORRY for the misfire. HAVE ABSOLUTELYT NO IDEA WHERE THE *censored* THAT CAME FROM. But - It did give me a chuckle.

I tried it on my machine using msconfig, getting rid of things that really don't need to be there, and it came back asking me to Put everyting back in Startup? lol

You know I just can't win. There was so much *censored* in there I couldn't possibly put everything back in startup.

THANK YOU BACKDATED!

Peace,
MP.This is my machine -

There are the usual unnecessary startup entries such as poorly considered installations of MS Office and Messenger etc and personally, Acrobat Reader would be binned and Foxit Reader installed instead.Yes, I did try MSConfig.

Yes, I did try to download SpySweeper thinking it was free got all the way to the end and it told me it would ony remove the infected files if I paid. I quickly quit the program and uninstalled it.

Yes, I did have a problem downloading SP2 and was instructed by HP Tech Support to redownload Office and that too had a few failed attempts!

Norton , I did uninstall everything using the add/remove programs feature. Not sure why thats still in there.

Pretty *censored* good at reading this.

Now I believe I should can the above mentioned items.

Thanks much.

Ad Aware and Spybot are both free and work well. Google for them.

You cannot download office. Do you mean reload from the CD? You should uninstall through add and remove in control panel.

The Norton virus is DIFFICULT to remove. See the removal INSTRUCTIONS on the Symantec web site.

Yes, I did try to download SpySweeper thinking it was free got all the way to the end and it told me it would ony remove the infected files if I paid. I quickly quit the program and uninstalled it.

Ad Aware and Spybot are both free and work well. Google for them.

Quote
Yes, I did have a problem downloading SP2 and was instructed by HP Tech Support to redownload Office and that too had a few failed attempts!

You cannot download office. Do you mean reload from the CD? You should uninstall through add and remove in control panel.

Quote
Norton , I did uninstall everything using the add/remove programs feature. Not sure why thats still in there.

The Norton virus is difficult to remove. See the removal instructions on the Symantec web site.

GX,

I use both Spy Bot and AdAware thanks much.

Mow that I think about it the error I received d/l SP2 had something to do with Office. But I finally d/l SP2 successfully so all is well.

There was one Norton app still in add/remove and I removed it so all should be OK now.

Thanks both you folks.

Solve : XP stalling @ Windows screen?

Answer»

I have windows XP.

When I turn on my computer it loads and it reaches this window SCREEN (which is blue and has the windows pic) and it stops in its tracks. In XP I have it SET up for user settings. So when I log on I can click on my name and put my password in and I get into all the files I need.

The problem is that it is stopping before it pops up the users and all I see is this blue screen.

I tried installing my operating system but when I turn my computer on with that disc it does the same exact thing and won't load it.

Help please!!
In order to reinstall your operating system you need to ensure that your BIOS is set up to boot from the CDROM, rather than from the hard drive. There will usually be a little message when you power on telling you how to enter the BIOS/Setup - e.g. by hitting delete or F1.

Somewhere in the BIOS you will find an option for "boot devices" - follow the instructions to put the CDROM as the first boot device. You can then boot from your installation CD. Remember to put things back the way they were, once you're done. Thanks!

One more question!

When installing XP will that erase everything I had on my hard drive? From what i remember when i installed XP i don't think it does......
You could try Doing a repair installation of windows xp instead of a full reinstall.

Before doing this, boot up your computer and press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice and see if it fetchs up the old Win2k type login box.

If this works. Login and do a system restore to a date that you can remember it working properly.Ok, maybe this will help. After selecting CDROM as one of the boot-up devices, let it run and load all the drivers from the CD. From there, there will be an optin to continue installing windows or to repair with the recovery console. Select R if you know how to play with DOS else hit Enter till it checks for previously installed windows and select R to repair.I have a safer solution, instead of doing a clean install or pressing "R" to do a repair in the XP DOS recovery console. Once you have you PC booted to the Windows setup screen press "Enter" to enter the Windows Setup and ACCEPT the License Agreement. Once Windows has searched for previous installations, select an XP installation to repair and then press "R". This will keep you from having to work around in the DOS based recovery console. Here is a good link if you have troubles: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
This repair will only replace your .sys files and will not harm any of the files saved in your Documents and Setting profiles. The first thing to try is Safe Mode!
Continually tap the F8 key at boot until a startup menu appears (It may take a few tries). CHOOSE Safe Mode and let us know if it boots.

A repair or "over the top" installation will probably do nothing but waste your time if the problem is caused by virus/malware infection.

Solve : My ethernet doesnt work, can you fix it??

Answer»

Hi!
I was hoping to hook my laptop up for wireless internet. I have been using cable for my internet, but I did not realize that my ethernet on my desktop did not work. I have been using my desktop in the usb slot on the modem, but when I hook it into the ethernet slot, nothing happens. I do not believe that my ethernet works on my desktop. Is there any way to fix it? or another way to get wireless internet on my laptop, or do I have to give up hope of wireless internet?
I hope somebody can help me.
Thanks.Do you have a wireless card in your laptop? Do you have a wireless router? These two things are required.Yes, I do have a wireless card, and the router, I also have a wireless access point. I remember when I first got the cable on my desktop, they said that the ethernet did not work, but I had totally forgot about that. I have a wireless router. I do not need an access point. What make and model is this? A wireless router should have up to 4 ports for wired connections. If your ethernet card on your computer doesn't work you can add another. I guess I am not clear on what your problem is and what equipment you are using (and why).I have a linksys etherfast cable/ dsl router model: befsr41. it does have 4 ports for wired connections.
I don't know anything about computers. My friend gave me my first laptop, and sent me this stuff with it. The access point is a SMC EZ connect 802.11a wireless access point model: smc2755w. I never had my first laptop on the internet, so I have no idea how to hook it all up. :-/
I think that my desktop is the problem, because when I tried hooking an ethernet cable to just my desktop, and the modem, nothing happened, and I could not get internet on my desktop until I hooked it back up to the USB port. I have been mostly been trying to hook everything up from DIRECTIONS I have found on google.
Also, do you mean that there is an ethernet card in my desktop as well?Ethernet on the desktop? Look back there and see. It will have one port, a little bigger than a phone connection, and usually a few small lights nest to the plug. You would then have to tell your computer to use that rather than USB, if that's what you want to do.

You can download Belarc Advisor (for free) to see what network card is in there or check in Device Manager. That will also let you see if it is configured properly.

What version of Windows? If XP then you can use internet connection wizard to get everything configured.

802.11a may be a problem. I have used B and G. You may just want to get a wirelss G router and forego all of this. $16 after rebate!

http://compnetworking.about.com/od/homenetworking/

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1428I Have windows xp on both of my computers. The belarc advisor says: Network drives: none detected. Is that where it would tell me what network card is there?
Also, How would I tell my computer to use the ethernet instead of the USB? Ny using the internet connection wizard?
Will I need to install an ethernet card into my desktop to use the ethernet port, or should it already work?
If I get a NEW router, will I need a new wireless card to go with it?What wireless card do you have? It may be an "a" also. (I rather suspect it is.)

Newegg has you covered on that as well:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127149

Your onboard NIC, if present is under Communications, on the left hand side.

If not present:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833314101

(It doesn't all have to be D-link!)My wireless card is also an 802.11a
under communications on the belarc advisor it says:SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
But, when I try to use the ethernet on just my desktop,it doesnt even work.
How do I tell it to use the ethernet? It would be very wise to have a "wired" or ethernet connection from your desktop to the router. Setting up a router over wireless exclusively can be quite risky and a right pita!

If your desktop was built in the last 3 years or so, it will probably have an onboard NIC (Network card) and the SOCKET will be near the USB etc ports as shown in the bottom insert (Next to the audio connectors):

If you don't have an onboard NIC, then you'll need an add-in card (Around UK£5):

You'll need to install the NIC drivers and SET the computers to "Never Dial A Connection", set up the TCP/IP options for the NIC, set up the wireless and TCP/IP options on the laptop and set up the router and WAP.
This all sounds rather complicated I know, but believe me, it isn't.
When you have all the necessary components, post back and I'll take you through it in a step-by-step guide.
It appears that I do have a built in nic. I am going to have my Dad try and help me tommorrow, and find out what I have, then I will post again when I need the step by step help. Will my 802.11a router and access point work OK, or do I have to get a new one?If you do have a NIC, and it works correctly, and it has the driver LOADED, and you have a cat5e cable connecting the computer and the router, that should solve the problem for that machine. How do I know if it has the driver?
I have a cable, but I cannot say for sure if it is a cat5e cable. The cable I have says: verified catergory patch 5 cable. It also has lots of different numbers on it.The cable sounds good and you can check Control Panels Device Manager to see what hardware is installed.
If an onboard NIC is in place, it may be disabled via the BIOS. If that's the case, you'll need to re-enable it.I cant find the device manager :-? I am using windows XP home edition.

Solve : Stoopid System Tray Arrangement Question?

Answer»

XP, SP2

You know how you can rearrange the icons on the QUICK Links toolbar?

Can you do that in the System TRAY?

I find it aesthetically unpleasing.

>Shell Tray INFO<

And might I observe that this request is more than a little bit *censored*? THANKS, I'll check it out.

*censored*, maybe... But what's the point of creating a screen environment where EVERYTHING can be rearranged to someone's taste, except for one quarter-inch by four inch sliver that is ALWAYS ON SCREEN?

I use XP's system tray icon auto-hide facility, so it doesn't trouble me that MUCH.

Customisation is over-rated.

Solve : Various Problems?

Answer»

Hi,

I am running : Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, SP2.

I am having several problems though. My computer never wants to shut down, i go Start, Shut down and it closes Norton but doesent shut down. Some times i get ccapp error!

Ctrl+Alt+Del doesnt work propley, all i get is this:
http://img483.imageshack.us/img483/1176/ctrl7sp.th.jpg

USB also is tempremental, when i plug something in, it will sometimes work, OTHERS the PC just freezes.

Internet Explorer when i close it some times, i get this error, The instruction at "0x0175cd11" REFERENCED memory at "0x0175cd11". The memory could not be "read" Press OK to terminate.

Any help welcome,
Cheers, Rob

Do a Google search on ccapp error. The first site listed from that search says this has to do with Norton Anti-Virus.

That image you provided a link to is too small to read. It appears to be Windows Task Manager. Is it?

You've basically raised three questions in the same message. I'll LEAVE the other two to someone else.Cheers for your reply.

I did search on google, and i UNDERSTAND it is LINKED to norton. But i also read some where it was a virus, or something along those lines, but when i do scan my PC, no viruses are found.

That image is of task manager, but its not working correctly, as it only shows 'Processes' not CPU usage etc...

Thanks Alot,
RobFrom: http://www.infopackets.com/channels/en/windows/gazette/2005/20050929_ccapp_exe_error_during_shutdown.htm:

" The ccApp.exe problem [has been fixed] ... in the latest Common Client and Norton AntiSpam program updates. To install the update, start your Norton product, run LiveUpdate, download the updates (including any Common Client updates and the Norton AntiSpam program update if it is listed), and then restart the computer when you are asked to do so. RE: Spyware Warning

Please note: if you do *not* have any Norton [Symantec] products installed on your system, it is highly recommended that you run a Spyware scan because it is possible for any Trojan / Spyware / virus to have a file or process similarly named "ccApp.exe". I recommend using Spyware Doctor for your scan (recently awarded PCMagazine's Editor's Choice). You can download a copy here:

Solve : MBR partition table not in sequential order?

Answer»

How can I fix the Master Boot Record on Windos XP Pro SP2? I booted off of the install cd, then into the recovery console, ran FIXMBR, and STILL no luck.

I have 2 partitions, each has a copy of Windows XP Pro. The second partion is a backup of the first.

The problem started after I deleted BootMagic (a boot manager). BM is part of PQmagic. I have to select the first partition to go into the second. I know use PQmagic as my boot manager. It's one extra step, but no big deal. Bootmagic tech support said the MBR sometimes needs to be fixed after Bootmagic has been removed.

My boot.ini files are correct for each partition.

I had the same problem on my other computer. The only way I could fix it was to completely format the harddrive and start from new. Any ideas?Did you actually delete BootMagic or properly uninstall it?
Use the FixBoot command rather than the FixMBR command.I followed their instructions for unistalling it, since the Windows uninstall doesnot work. First I ran the MBR fix, second I deleted the keys from the registry, then deleted the different partition(Fat32). I believe I ran the MBR fix a second time after the problem wouldn't go away. I'll try again tomorrow.

I'll try the fixboot command next. Do I need to run fixboot on each partition that has an operating system? It should only be necessary to run it on the drive that contains the boot information although the part about "removing registry keys" has set alarm bells ringing!

What you've been trying to achieve through a DUAL boot system is over complicated, a WASTE of resources and, above all, totally unnecessary.
If you're doing this for backup purposes, it would be a much better idea to use Ghost or ATI or similar (There are some freebies available but I'm uncertain about their integrity etc) and take an image (Several images taken at different stages would be an even better idea). These images can be written to hard drive and/or burned to CD/DvD.
If you're running this setup for testing software etc then something like VMWorkstation is all you'll ever need. The keys were specifily related to Bootmagic. I haven't had a problem with anything new since I did the key deletion. Hopefully nothing else will go wrong.

What I'm trying to do is have dual op sys's, both with Win XP. Most people don't understand this so I tell them it's just a backup.

BTW, I tried Ghost as a backup PROGRAM a few months back and didn't like it. It was incredibly slow, especially if your backup goes onto MULTIPLE dvd's. I can't remember for the life of me, but there were some key features that were missing. For me, if I really want to just back something up, I use a USB harddrive with PQMagic.

Thanks for the help. I'll post the results tomorrow.I tried the FIXBOOT command with no luck. I tried it on both partitions. I also tried the the FIXMBR on both partitions with no luck. Any other ideas?

Solve : What computer brand do you have...?

Answer» What computer brand do you have... I just wanted to see peoples oppinions...I have both a Gateway and a Dell. Both are decent brands

FlameI've got a Dell Dimension 8400. System specs are at the bottom of my post. I built my own system.

SPECS:

Motherboard: Gygabyte (not sure of the number) with 4 DDR slots, 1 AGP, 4 PCI
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ ~ 2.2 GHz
Memory: 1 GB RAM using one of four slots on motherboard
Hard drive: 200 GB
CD-ROMs: 1 CD/DVD R-RW
Floppies: None (dumb THING stopped working)
Internet connection: Linksys Wireless (go me!)
Sound system: Creative Live! 24-bit 7.1 Surround Sound
Box: $100 box with transparent side, blue lighting and gauges which show my Volume Units, CPU temperature, and Power Supply Fan Speed
Monitor: 17" LCD from Norcent
Mouse: Cheap trackball-less mouse on a USB cord
Keyboard: $50 Zboard with keys that come out with the flick of a switch, and can be replaced with a gaming keyset and back; this makes it easy to clean the keyboard, too!

The total PRICE for this machine came out to about $1200. But it was well worth it.

[edit]I now have two mice plugged in at once.[/edit]I would love to build my own too, but I just don't have the time nor the patience lol

FlameNeat thing about building your own PC is that you feel more open to experimenting with it. (It needs to be emphasized that right now I am using two mice in unison on my PC) Only thing is that you get emotionally attached to it and lose all your friends. If the jumpers are set to "master" it has to be a master. changing the jumpers is the only real way to make it THINK it's a slave. But I personally don't care what my settings are; the CD-ROM can be my hard drive's Master if it wants to, so long as both of them work as normal. 2 Packard Bells

Solve : why is my pc so slow?

Answer»

When I got it, it opened up folders in an instant. Now it takes a while to open things up plus the internet is alot slower. When I watch videos on the internet now, they skip and don't play smoothly. I reformatted twice and still no faster. I have win xp sp2 and 1 gb ram if this helps anyone. I have many virus scans and spyware removal tools. They all say that my pc is 100% virus/spyware/etc... free. What should I do?What about processes running in the background? Check this with Task MANAGER.

I am not convinced that you are malware free. Computers don't get slower with age. They slow because of accumulated crappola from Windows and the Internet.

What about some more specifics on the machine and what you are using for protection regularly?Take a look in the system tray. WHen you expand it, how many little icons do you see there?I have norton antivirus and itunes when I am listening to music. That is it.

Can I just buy a new cpu like a P4 3.2ghz and drop it in and go?You should carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.

How are you installing SP2? Quote

Can I just buy a new cpu like a P4 3.2ghz and drop it in and go?

The CPU you can use depends entirely on your motherboard. What MAKE and model is it?
Sorry, I couldn't zip it, because I'm a retard. But here is the file.

From what's there, I see Aluria has a large presence, probably dumped on you by your ISP. After Alurias affilliation with WhenU and other producers and purveyors of malware (Which led to the breakup of the ASA), they are certainly not to be trusted.Alright, I'll get rid of aluria and also webroot spysweeper, because its a trial version, and it won't let you even remove the problems after it scans.

As for the motherboard, its just a dell dimension b110 and it said it had intel integrated graphics(I bought a new video card) so I'm guessing it is an intel motherboard.

These last two items should be fixed regardless of personal choice. My motherboard is a dell de051.

the switch user thing doesn't work on XP, even when i enable it in the contol panel>user SETTINGS. when i try pressing window Key+L it just LOCKS the computer. to switch users you have to log off each one to go onto another. i'm running XP home SP2 with 2.2 ghz celeron and 512 RAMWindows key+L always locks the computer doesn't switch users. Not according to Microsoft:

Soviet Genius, are the necessary services running (Fast User & Terminal)?
If they are, does Event Viewer give any clues?there are two users and i have no idea if whaa things are running :-/ also its not actually mine its my friend's compEnter services.msc in the START>Run box and set both services to Start and Automatic.Just a quickie:- if winlogo+l locks pc. What unlocks it?I NEVER use the Windows + L key....it only takes 2 seconds longer to press Start -> LOGOFF -> switch users :-/

Solve : Problem 1 - USB All-in-one Printer Problem. Win 9x?

Answer»

Hi,

Little problem with my printer. Took me a while to get it going (see Problem 2) but now it is theres an UNUSUAL turn of events.

The printer itself works fine. I can scan to print using just the printer. The scanner works fine, it scans to print without use of the computer and I can scan images into the computer using the given software. The problem comes printing from Computer to Printer. Nothing HAPPENS. It says the printer is working fine in the device manager and it sends the print without any error messages.

The printer is compatible with the machine I'm running and I'm on 98SE.

A friend told me that there are two versions of 98SE. A and B. One apparantly had major issues with using the USB slots as a printer port, which certainly explains why the scanner is working fine as they're on different USB comm lines? Unfortunately he doesn't know how to fix it because hes a hardcore LINUX user.

Any help would be great

DaveWin98 FE (first edition) has problems with USB. Unpredictable but it works with some items. Win98SE works fine with USB devices and I don't think this is an issue, if your printer is compatible with that operating system per the manufacturer.

It does matter how the printer is installed. If you uninstall the software, reboot (with the printer unplugged!) and then reinstall, reboot and THEN plug in the printer, that is usually how it works. Especially if this is an HP you have to do things in the proper order.Dave:

Right. I have the free USB drivers for Windows 98 on disc. If you want me to send them to you as an e-mail attachment so you can install them, let me know (just send me a private message with on of your e-mail addresses).

DocGX1_Man: I'll give it a go but I've tried several times to no avail. A lot of the time Problem 2 intervenes during installation which MIGHT have something to do with it. But yeah I'll give it a go

pcdoc4christ: What drivers are they? Most USB connected devices work fine on this machine, this is the first (well second) problem I've had (the first is completely unrelated and solved for that matter). What MAKE and model printer is this? YOu are sure you have Windows 98 Second Edition?Lexmark X2350.

And I'm pretty sure I've got 98SE. It certainly isn't Playschool OS Quote

And I'm pretty sure I've got 98SE. It certainly isn't Playschool OS

I'm not sure if this was supposed to be sarcastic or not, but make sure, because if it's not SE I don't think you will have success.Just a little joke. Sorry, tone isn't well represented online. It's definately 98SE. I have a Lexmark X75 that occassionally exhibits the same problem. If your printer software works like mine, just insert the Lexmark CD and click install. It will detect that it is already installed and offer to update the drivers. Let it do so. If you still have problems with black print, replace the cartridge.ok thanks, ill give it a go! Ensure that any motherboard chipset drivers are updated from the vendors support site where possible, and not via Windows Update.
The same applies if your USB ports are provided via an add-in card.

Then your version of Windows 98 doesn't need the drivers.

Make sure you do have the latest Windows 98 SE drivers for your printer installed from the manufacturer's Web site, however.

Solve : Best Wireless Router??

Answer»

I'm by no means a novice on most computer topics, but I readily admit to having zero knowledge of networking. I recently added a second pc to our household and wish to set up a simple wireless NETWORK to share our DSL connection. The problem is deciding which router to buy; I usually read product reviews written by other consumers to help in my purchasing of hardware, but I see a lot of negative comments about every wireless router I research. I'm sure a 54 Mbps unit will suffice; I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

I am almost to the point that I want to climb in the attic, run network cable and just forget the wireless option. Almost... :-?G'day IVE just set a wireless network up.well...installed a D-link G604T which seems to do the job well. I haven't managed the security aspect yet but that will come. Not sure if this will help, but good luck. Hi Guys,

I'm in the UK and have just done a CCNA and a Masters in Information Security, I'm not by any means an expert but, wirless routers are all about the same, I use a mixture of wireless routers at home and at my offices, but one thingto consider, is security, using it for BROWSING is one thing and another thing completely is for making on line purchases and on line banking.... much safer to use a hard wired router connection, unless you tun on the security option, but even with security there are free downloads which you can literally sit outside someones house and watch their every move. I also use a d-link and voyager's for the majority of my applications, because cisco ones are just to involved for simple installations..Not sure if this is the router, but I use:

Instant Wireless-B PCI AdapterI run 2 laptops on wireless and desktop on wire from the router. I only use the desk top for anything sensitive. 8-)Netgear and Linksys are supposedly teh best routers where I am

FlameThanks for the input. I do pay a number of my bills on-line, so the point made by PH426 causes me some concern. Is it possible to detect unauthorized intrusion into one's wireless network? Again, I have no experience in this area...Yes it is a number of ways are avaliable from network monitor programs or to just have a look at what MAC addreses have been stored on a router, and if you don't recognise them, then block them.

But I wouldn't let that concern you, the simpliest ways to protect yourself from most things, is to see what firewalls your ISP provides, firewall on the router itself, get some firewall stuff on your PC and to enable encryption on your router, even something simple like ASCII, don't worry there will be a guide with your router on how to enable this, very easy, and if your really paranoid, you could even enable a few other options and only allow the MAC addresses of the PC's you want to use...

Lists are endless... But just be careful if you are INTENDING to move sensitive data, then take extra steps, its no hard ship to plug a laptop into a hard wired position for a while...The best wireless routers are ones that help stealth your computer from unwanted intrusions. There are upwards of 1000 ways to access your computer, on it's various ports, as I found out. I use a Linksys, and all except one are stealthed, and that one is blocked. Just in case people get past that, I have Norton configured to block that port as well. If you really want to be safe wtih bills and such, pay them from a wired computer. This way it's less likely that your information will be intercepted.

Solve : My computer is broken - Help me!?

Answer»

No other way to describe this, but my coomputers is broken. Yesterday I tried to install MSN messenger (for my friends) and whilst installing it said I also needed to upgrade IE to 6.0. After it finished downloading that it said I needed to restart my computer. After the usual updating settings on start up, it comes up with the message 'Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows' I click on OK and it says 'Error Starting Program' 'A required .DLL file C:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHLWAPI.DLL was not found' I try to click OK on this but nothing happens. You cannot believe how annoyed I am by this, as I have only recently got it working (3 days ago). I Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart the laptop, but these same messages always come up.

The laptop is a Sony VAIO and I am Windows ME, can someone please either give an answer as to how this problem has been caused and how it can be fixed. Any advice much appreciated. Cheers, JamesThe file was overwritten by a newer version during the MSN Messenger install.

shlwapi.dll is installed as a tied component of Internet Explorer, and the version should always match that of the installed version of Internet Explorer

Do you have System Restore enabled on that machine? If so, try restoring to a date BEFORE you did this. That seems the easiest road right now.Yeah that would work fine, but as I said, I can't do ANYTHING on the machine. When I turn on the power it comes up with all the usual loaidng screens, but before it gets to the login screen these messages come up and I can't click off them and hence am unable to do anything whatsoever. Maybe if I could get to some sort of menu before it initialises starting windows then i could system restore it this way? I don't know an awful lot about computers, anyone care to enlighten me?personally I'd restore an older version of the registry. youll need to restart into dos mode (if its pre-XP).

type the following into DOS.

Code: [Select]scanreg /restore
select a date before when the problem started and that should work

*EDIT* I've looked it up and seems you can do it in Safe Mode by going to Start > Run in ME.Pressing F8 several times during boot (before the Windows logo) should get you to Safe Mode where you can make these changes.Again, thanks for your advice but when I start it in safe mode (after pressing f8 lots) I get excatly the same messages come up, just on a lightly smaller screen.

Appollyon - How do I 'type into DOS' as whenever I select safe made it just starts the same (albeit with 'Safe Mode written in the 4 corners of the screen) and I can't see anywhere where I could type somehtng into it.

I think this is a more serious problem than everyone here suggests, but why has it happened? All I did was install a new msn and IE, surely it can't cause all this? Quote

I think this is a more serious problem than everyone here suggests, but why has it happened? All I did was install a new msn and IE, surely it can't cause all this?

Oh yes it can! Any install program has the potential to FUBAR your system. In this case, I believe it was because an elderly version of IE was installed and MSN didn't know how to cope with it.

If you are in safe mode, can you open command prompt through the Start Menu system? That is as CLOSE as you will get to DOS in WinME.I've said this once, and I'll say it again - I can't do ANYTHING on the computer. Whenever i turn it on it displays the two messages that I have mentioned previously and that is all it can do.

Usually after starting up the laptop it displays the login screen (where I type in my password) then it will load the desktop. At the moment my computer doesn't even reach the login STAGE, and all it does is display my wallpaper and has these two messages. When I click 'OK' on the first message (no other options are given) it brings up the second one and when I click 'OK' on this (the only choice) the screen freezes and I have to restart the laptop. I can press Ctrl+Alt+Del which brings up the 'Close Program' which displays no programs (usually has loads) and the only options are 'End Task' (Useless), 'Shut Down' and 'Cancel' If I choose cancel, then it does that weird thing where you can still see half the 'Close Program' window in the shape of the second message box.

There must be something that can be done, surely? Even a complete factory settings restore would suit me, anything to get the bloody thing working again. If a computer can be rendered useless due to installing IE 6.0 then it is an absolute joke, and I will have wasted hundreds of pounds. Please tell em what can be done...First thing, ALTHOUGH I've used ME in the distant past I can't remember what the safe mode start up screen looks like. When you hit F8 (albeit repeatedly) and the options come up is there an option on there to enter MS-DOS mode (it might be displayed as command line interface or similar). This should send your computer straight into the CLI no problem and then type "scanreg /restore" and select a date from the day before you installed IE 6.

If the option isn't there you might need to get hold of a boot disk to do this (preferably ME or 98, im not SURE about the others).

For the record I had a similar problem after installing IE 6 on 98SE (because of this I now use Trillian) Instead this corrupted the registry so this option might not solve your problem. Formatting may be the only answer. (unless you feel confident enough to create partitions on your drive)

If you can access your laptop hard drive through connecting it up to another machine as a slave then you will be able to transfer what stuff you've got and you wont lose everything.

I had ME at one point but got rid of it straight away when I installed to find a serious registry fault in the installation (different to the IE 6 one). Free bootdisk download at www.bootdisk.com

Maybe this will help. If not, then you can at least format the hard drive and reinstall from your WinME CD. Do you have one of those, or a restore CD?

I have a program in my Add/Remove prgrams list that I CANNOT get rid of. I have GOOGLED to find out how to remove programs from the Add/Remove Prgrams list. One suggestion was to use the Rgistry. When I went to the location in the registry where they reccomended I found that instead of finding the name of the program I foudn the GUID. There were also suggestions that I use Tweak UI to remove the program. I cannot seem to find such a function in Tweak UI for Windows XP
So...How can I find the GUID for the program I want to delete or how do I use TweakUI (what am I missing) to get rid of this program?

Any help will be greatly appreciated and...

Thank you in advance. For the first problem, open Regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
Change the "Download Directory" Value Data to the location of your choice.

For your second program, delete any remnants of the program on your hard drive via Explorer and then use CCleaner to clean up.CCleaner worked GREAT getting rid of that stubborn program from my Add/Remove programs list.

The other issue is still there. I have gone into the registry where you suggested and the path is pointed to my desktop (which is where I want the downloads to go) ZIP files still automatically download and open in the temp directory.

Any more ideas??What Zip program is installed? A few exhibit this behaviour as default.Try pointing it to a different directory other than the desktop. See if that works.

If that doesn't work maybe it's some sort of browser hijacker. Have you TRIED scanning for adware/viruses?I use WinRAR v3.51
I have tried changing the location of the downloaded files in the directory and still no luck.
I have scanned for Spy and Ad Ware. None out of the ordinary.
I have uninstalled WinRAR and then tried to download a zip. It worked like I want it to. (Prompting me where to save.)
I then reinstalled WinRAR. It started acting up again. I dis-associated the ZIP format from WinRAR and tried to download again. It prompted me for where to save it. It appears to be an issue in WinRAR.
In WinRAR I have tried changing the default download directory and still no GOOD. The ZIP files ALWAYS download to and open from the temp directory.

Hmmmmm.....Maybe you should try to seek for technical support from WinRAR. I've attached a copy of my settings file for WinRaR. Just extract it to the WinRaR program folder and run WinRaR. If WinRaR doesn't give a notice about new settings being used, import it.

Solve : Keyboard and mouse stop responding when XP startss?

Answer»

Hi,
I edited the XP Home Edition SP2, registry in two places. Immediately afterwards, my pc seemed to boot normally, but the mouse and keyboard became non-responsive, as if they weren't present. Hard to compute without input devices, LOL l I can make changes in the BIOS setup area and then once Windows starts, I can look at the desktop.

To complicate the issue, Windows stopped recognizing the CD-RW and DVD drives the day before (unrelated to the KB/mouse prob), so those are unusable. The floppy works, and I have an additional non-working PC (both Dells with XP Home, WDC HDDs).

Is it possible to open regedit from a command prompt before XP starts so I can unedit what I shouldn't have edited. If so, how? Or, can I install HDD #2 as the master, make HDD#1 the slave, boot from HDD#2 and then somehow access HDD#1 to get to regedit in #1?

I've tried booting in safe mode, and safe mode with logging(?) I read the system messages in the BIOS setup, and it reported a keyboard failure. Is that significant? (It's a working keyboard). I changed the mouse from a PS2 to a USB connection. No difference. Windows even recognzed the new mouse and installed the drivers automatically after one of the useless boots. The mouse STILL didn't work, though. Can I make a start-up floppy that would take me to a command prompt? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. At this point, I'm willing to try almost anythng reasonable. Thanks
You didn't make a bakup copy of the registry before you edited? There may be changes there you are not even aware of needing fixing. To answer the question, no, I didn't. But even if I had, it wouldn't be accessible. Unless I'd backed up to a floppy. Good point though about other changes. Yikes.Alyxx:

The answer to your question is yes:

Have fun at the Recovery Console. 8-)

DocDoc, I appreciate your suggestion. Could you tell me what files are on an XP Home Edition boot floppy? I can't use the CD or DVD drives and I don't yet have an XP floppy start up disk. I could make one from the Windows OS CD on another pc, though. It'd be worth a shot. Thanks again for the help and the link. Interesting stuff.Sorry - I seem to be overdoing the bonehead stuff today. Found the info (and download) for a 6-diskette set of XP home edition boot floppies on microsoft's website. If your CD drive isn't available to access the repair console then no ammount of Windows fiddling will fix it. At that stage, the OS isn't involved.
Have you tried bringing up the boot menu and selecting "Last known good config"?I sure did. Booted right up into XP, just like always. Unfortunately, booting into XP seems to be when the mouse and keyboard lose all functionality. I don't suppose you remember what you deleted in the registry? Quote

I sure did. Booted right up into XP, just like always. Unfortunately, booting into XP seems to be when the mouse and keyboard lose all functionality.

If you are using a USB mouse and keyboard, try switching to a PS/2 mouse. On some systems, changing the boot order in the BIOS setup allows a USB mouse to work (i had a Gateway PC with that quirk).

Doc
I don't suppose you remember what you deleted in the registry?

I do, to some degree. I did take the precaution of making screenshots of everything - and guess where those are? Anyway, here's what happened: Found a forum while looking for reasons my CD/DVD drives were hosed. In one forum, there was a post that gave step by step instructions for restoring a CD drive, from a guy who'd found an answer. There were 10+ enthusiastic kudos for his suggestion. Impressive. (The name of the forum starts with the word "Tool" I think. I looked for it for more than an hour last night, but no luck. I did bookmark it at the time, but you know where that is.)

Here's what he wrote, basically:
"Open regedit, find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Current Control Set ..." That's as far back as I remember with respect to location. I do remember, however, that I deleted the names "Upper Fields" and "Lower Fields", per his post. Those came under one of the long alphanumeric entries with an "e325 11ce" in the middle, if that helps. I reference his post on the chance that someone may have seen it, not to try & subtly shift responsibility for the screw-up. I'm the idiot who can take credit for that.

Now, according to this fellow's well-received instructions, that should have fixed the CD drives problem. I rebooted (I think), but Windows still didn't see the drives. OK, back to the forum. Read the instructions again, TAKING screenshots. Decided maybe I missed something and re-entered regedit again. I found, within the same area of the reg. another couple of "Upper" and "Lower Fields", but this time, instead of deleting, I renamed them to "Rename" and "Renamed", so I could find them easily and edit back to the original name. Rebooted, and that's when the mouse/KB wouldn't work once XP began the boot process.

In the BIOS setup (F2 on a Dell), there's an entry called "System Log" or a similar term. I hit Enter and read the entry for that day and it reported a keyboard failure. I knew the KB worked, so I chalked it up to the SOURCE of the main problem. An effect, rather than a cause. I hope this is all of some help, and believe me, your interest is SINCERELY appreciated.

If you are using a USB mouse and keyboard, try switching to a PS/2 mouse. On some systems, changing the boot order in the BIOS setup allows a USB mouse to work (i had a Gateway PC with that quirk).

I tried switching from a PS2 mouse to a USB mouse, but it didn't help. And I also tried different boot orders. But since the CD drive isn't recognized, and I didn't have a floppy to boot from, putting those two at the top of the order made no difference, since the system saw the HDD as the only viable boot device. Good idea, though and thanks. What model Dell is this? It's a Dell Dimension 8200For anyone who might still be interested, I tried the idea of installing the second hard drive - the one with XP already on it - and booting from that. All I got was the message "NTDETECT FAILED". Then, I tried one of the floppy boot diskettes and got the BOOT: I/O Error reading disk. Please insert another disk. I inserted another disk and got "Invalid system disk..."

I guess it's back to the proverbial drawing board...if i can find it.

Solve : Help with Printer Sharing?

Answer»

I wanted to share my printer with my other computer through a network. I have got the file sharing up and running but i cant get the printer sharing to work. I have a printer for each computer but one is broken so i wanted to share the GOOD printer with the 2 computers. For some reason i can get the broken printer to be shared between the 2 computers but i cant get the working one to be shared.

Can someone please help me?

Sorry if i didnt make any sense but if you have any questions about what i said just ask.

ThanksRick:

Are all computers on your network running Windows XP?

DocYep. Used the same XP disc on both computers (XP HOME)Rickstaaa:

Try this:

1. Click Start, then Control Panel.

2. On the left-hand column of Control Panel, click Switch to Classic View.

3. Double-click Printers and Faxes.

4. In the Printers and Faxes window, right-click the printer and click Sharing on the shortcut menu.

5. In the printer's properties dialog box, select the Share this Printer option button and click OK.

6. Make sure you log on to the other computer with a user name and password that you use to log on to the computer with the shared printer.

Let us know how it goes,
Doc
No i've DONE all that ALREADY. The printer is already set up to be shared its just it wont show up on the network when i go to the add printer wizard.I'm not too familiar with XP Home edition, but in XP Pro you can go to the Run command, type in the IP for your shared pc ... \\192.168.1.100 Hit Enter and open Printers and Faxes, Right-Click on a shared printer and hit Connect.Just tried it and it came up with an error message, "The network path was not found."

Maybe i'm not typing in the right IP address. How do i find my shared IP address?

Sorry if that sounds like a dumb question.to find out what your IP address is on your shared pc, goto that pc, log in, and open a cmd window. At the prompt, type IPCONFIG /all

Note.. to make sure the printer is shared on that pc, you can open it as well from the run line.

Run - CMD
Ipconfig /all
... 192.168.....

Start - Run - \\192.168.?.? (input correct IP)

Then you can see if the printer is listed as a shared printer (It will show up under Printers)
Well i tried that and the printer wasnt in there. I tried running the Network Wizard again and i was thinking maybe i picked the wrong connections. One of my computers is connected to the router(thats the one with the printer) and the other one's connected wirelessly. I couldn't find the right connection if your computer is connected wirelessly. I was thinking maybe it's not allowed to connect wirelessly but i can share files just not the printer. Is there a way i can like delete the Home network and start from scratch?Running the Network Wizard with a router in place can totally wreck network connectivity. In the main, it's designed for ICS.

Personally, I set up static IPs via the Network Connections>NIC applet for each MACHINE, disable DHCP at the router and disable the Windows Firewall/ICS service altogether.Yeah sorry i don't know how to do what you just said. Im alright with computer im just not an expert.Static IPs are another issue which probably won't have any effect on the current situation. However, it may have made the initial setup easier.
First of all, try stopping and disabling the Windows Firewall/ICS service from the Services Console, rebooting and reinstalling the network printer. If the other printer is unuseable, uninstall it out of the way.

Are any software firewalls in place?Rickstaaa:

Can you see any folders on the computer to which the printer is attached? If not, try using the Windows XP search to search for the name of that other computer. If the search finds that computer, double-click on it and you should see the shared printer icon.

If search cannot find the other computer, or if you have an access denied error, let us know. We will help you configure the Windows XP firewall, your Internet Protocol settings, and your access permissions.

Doc
The Windows firewall and ICS should definitely be disabled where a router is in use as it serves no purpose and can cause problems.I did a search and i couldnt find the computer. I have my computers named Computer1 and Computer2. The computer with the printer is Computer1 and i use Computer2. On Computer1, it shows that Comptuer2 is in the network but on Computer2, it doesn't show Computer1 in the network. Maybe i have set up Computer1 Wrong. Can you help?

Sorry if that was confusing.

Solve : Is it possible for computer to lose speed??

Answer»

Hi!
I recently purchased a laptop off of ebay. I was told that this has 700 MHZ of speed. This laptop did not come with an operating system. I loaded windows 98 and then upgraded to windows XP. After I had everything running I checked the speed, and it says there is only 497 MHZ. I dont want to contact the seller if this really is not a PROBLEM. I was wondering if when you load an upgrade cd or an operating system, if it is normal to lose speed, or if this just did not have the amount of speed stated in the first place? :-? :-? Thanks for any help I can get.DOWNLOAD Belarc Advisor (free at www.belarc.com). It will tell you the processor speed. You should also be able to have it displayed in the BIOS/Setup screen. What make and model is this?It is a dell L400Also, I do not yet have internet on my laptop.Hpw are you sending these messages? You can download the file, copy it to a floppy and install on your machine.

L400 doesn't say much. Is there a 5-6 digit SERVICE tag attached to your machine? What is it?

You can also get the info from the BIOS (F2 at boot) in the lower right corner.

We will be able to tell for sure what's in there with that info.

The Latitude L400 came with a Pentium MOBILE processor. You could be getting a reading when it cycles down for light use on batteries. It has a 100 Mhz bus, so that makes it a Pentium 500 or so processor. I have an IBM Thinkpad with a 700 Mhz processor that gets read as a 550 at times.

XP has speed step technology built in. Google for the term to learn more. The Dell Latitude L400 is a 733Mhz machine. A manual is available here.I am posting from my desktop COMPUTER.
This is a dell latitude L400.
The bottom says model no. pp01s.
When I booted the computer to bios it did say 700 MHZ, so I guess the system information has just been reading wrong?
Thanks for all the replys. Now I've got it all figured out!
I googled the term, speedstep technology and it said that the processor loses speed when ran on a battery, so that must have been why it was reading lower.
Thanks for the help, it saved my ebay seller from any complaints. [smiley=dankk2.gif] [smiley=dankk2.gif]Thanks for posting back.

Solve : Unknown Zone (Mixed)?

Answer»

can anyone tell me what this means
Unknown Zone (Mixed) found at the bottom of the window when accesing a webpage

windows 98se

Generally speaking, a web PAGE often carries items from other locations; ads for example. This means is that although the web page you ACTUALLY fetched may be trusted, some of the items on it from other sources may not be. In other words, as it SAYS, it's a mixed zone.
Do you have an example? No not an example, but what caused all this was my mate on her win 98se computer was accessing this url http://www.corbymesupportgroup.co.uk/
to check out the new button that I had put in on her web page when she clicked the button it didnt do anything and then she noticed at the bottom of the window this Unknown Zone (Mixed)

I have Windows XP and I have no message at the bottom and can access the button on the page like it should be done.

So I am trying to fathom out what next to do.

Elaine
IE6 on XP-SP2 is a different animal. I note the site is hosted on Freewebs so I suspect advertising banners. On this RIG, all adverts are blocked so I'll take a look tomorrow on a "semi naked" 98 box.

One thing gleaned though. Do you really need to put your full details on public display? I would carefully consider it if I were you. Quote

Do you really need to put your full details on public display?
I have said that to my mate and made known the reasons why but she says its ok. I like you do not consider that its safe, but I am going to keep on at her about it.

I am not sure what you mean by " some of the items on it from other sources " as there is nothing on the page from another source, only the small banner at the bottom so could that be the cause,

Her system is win98se with IE6, AVG7free antivirus, Sygate Firewall and Spybot Search-Destroy all current and updated and also has the google bar which stops pop ups.

I also have another computer that is the same Specs as hers and the button works on that and no signs of mixed zone.

The only diffrence between those two is the ISP hers is 56k dial up provided by OneTel.net.uk and mine is cable broadband provided by NTL.com but I wouldnt have thought that would have made a diffrence.

Solve : Booting Problem help!?

Answer»

When i turn on my computer, the power is on alright, but my computer WOULD keep staying on the very first screen, which is the screen that shows my IDE informations, my memory status and at the bottom it says "press DEL to enter SETUP" on black background. Yea, it's the very first screen you see when you start your computer.
The problem is my computer wouldn't go any further. It just stays at this screen forever.
So i turned off the computer, opened up the case and tried to see what went wrong.
Of course i found nothing so i closed the case, plugged everything back and turned on the PC and it booted just fine!
This was a couple days ago and after that, it worked just fine for few days and the problem just occured again.
So i just went through the same process(opening up the case and did nothing, then replugged everything)
and it's WORKING fine again.
I'm worried if this problem may later cause permant damage if i keep using my computer without fixing this weird problem.

My computer is Pentium 4 and using windows XP, got plenty of RAM
I RECENTLY changed my graphic card and added Firewire IEEE1394 card.
They worked just fine for couple weeks now, but i have a feeling that it might be the IEEE card that i installed. (Not sure though)
Do you think if it could be a problem REGARDING any hardware?
If not, what could be causing this weird problem?
Please help!Check and make sure that the two items you installed are SEATED in thier sockets properly then run a thourgh scan disk and let it check and fix any errors

ElaineHow about some details on the computer, the power supply, and the graphics card? I would take the firewire card out for now until we get this resolved. (One variable at a time.) Ensure that all items are securely seated. It's fairly easy to dislodge a cable or a card etc without realising it.Yes i made sure all the cards are in their socket firmly.
I just ran the Scandisk today and i'm just hoping that my problem is gone.
Hmm...I still wonder what cause the problem...
Oh, and thanks for your kind replies!

Solve : NetBIOS/File Sharing over the Internet?

Answer»

I understand the dangers of File and Printer Sharing over the internet. Especially shares that are not password protected.
However is it possible to connect to remote machines \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\Games over the internet not just on LANS?

I have a friend that lives in another state, and we want to share files with netbios.

He has all the resources shared, but I can't seem to connect to any resources outside of my lan.
If you want to share files, set up a VPN or an FTP server. There are even very simple HTTP server interfaces avilable such as WWWFileshare Pro (I use this as an example but it has many vulnerabilities, hence no link).I'd echo Backdated. You CAN use NetBIOS/SMB shares over the internet, but ONLY do it via VPN.

In practice, latency makes NetBIOS over VPN rather unsatisfactory, even over broadband, so FTP is probably your better choice.Ok, thanks. I haven't heard of a VPN before this. Going to have to do some research.

Before robpomeroy confirmed that you can use NetBIOS shares over the internet I was beginning to wonder. I wasn't finding any sites telling how to use them over the internet, only sites saying how to protect your self and the dangers of File and Printer Sharing.

Sidenote: Even though I'm not going to use NetBIOS, I heard that you could only password shares in Professional Edition. Do they have tools or something of the LIKE that would allow a Home Edition user to protect their shares? You can password protect shared folders on all versions of Windows from 95 onwards. It's just that the level of security is rather poor in most versions. You could each get yourself an FTP server, an FTP client and a DYNAMIC DNS SERVICE such as No-IP (Not necessary if you both have static IPs).
All of this can be done at no COST and files can be securely shared with transfer speeds limited only by each others upload speed.

I run an FTP server using Serv-U and No-IP without problem. My clients are able to download from me at 30K.
