Solve : Is there any benefit to running malware removal when there are no problems??

Answer»

I did a search FIRST but got nothing useful back.

My computer is running fine, but I was wondering if there is any preventative maintenance that should be done to prevent spyware/malware even if I don't know that my notebook is infected? I'm ALREADY running MacAfee Security Center.

Thanks!It's always a good idea to regularly run anti-malware AND anti-virus programs. Just because your computer SEEMS non-infected, doesn't mean it isn't. BUT, UNLESS you pick up a virus, you don't need to post your logs here.Alrighty, thanks!

I've had computers get infected before and figured anything I can do to prevent the nightmare is worth it. I am obscenely dependent on this machine.Quote from: MP_doc on February 02, 2010, 08:02:18 PM

Well, as long as you keep this account registered (and you don't forget the password), that's one less step you have to TAKE on your road to disinfection if the need be. Topic moved, since not a malware issue.

Solve : Vegas Codecs (Where to find)?

Answer» ALRIGHT, I had previously been using Vegas on XP with the Community Codec pack and things were going fine, but after updating to 7 I am missing some codecs. I reinstalled the CC pack but no luck, so I uninstalled it and tried K-Lite, again no luck.

When dragging (or importing) video files, I am missing the AUDIO. Gspot says it's mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC. Have been looking everywhere with no luck. Any ideas? Thanks...Win7codecs http://www.majorgeeks.com/Win7codecs_d5959.htmlThank you. I finally GAVE in and downloaded Super and have managed to convert to either an MP4 (with DivX and AMR codecs) or an AVI (with MPEG-4 and mp3 settings and a DivX codec) but I must say the quality is AWFUL. It looks decent in VLC but once it's in Sony, the preview is awful. While I'm waiting for your link to download, could you RECOMMEND the best formats to use when converting to render into Sony. I'd like to burn some DVD's and while I'm not expecting BR quality, even full screen on my laptop is looking rather pitiful right now.

Thanks I would think either MPEG or AVI but that's just my guess.

Solve : MS Excel - Trouble Linking files with .xlsm extentions?

Answer»

Having trouble linking two files with .xlsm extensions, can only link by having both files open at once which is inconvenient when linking LOTS of different cells that I normally just use find and replace function. Used to work very easy when files were 2003 .xls files. Excel closes down when ever I try to drag the link address. If I link the cells directly, when I remove the $ SIGNS from the cell name I get an error message #REF!. Strange ... I have been linking files for years, only difference is changing files to new format .xlxm.I may not be the best one to answer your question since I've never used Excel 2007.

But since nobody else has replied, here goes.

Can you save the files as .xls? The "m" stands for macros, but macros have been around since the EARLIEST Excel release. I've also read that .xlsm files are compressed, or zipped, and I bet that is part of the problem you are having in trying to link two spreadsheets. In Excel 2003 it was pretty easy.Thanks for your reply, the file does have macros, hence the .xlsm extention, they started as excel 2003 .xls files but have been updated to excel 2007.
I have tried just making a couple of very simple .xlsm files and linking those, and they seemed to work, I also linked one of these simple files with the template that I am having trouble with and that worked.

But as soon as I try and link the more complex files excel just crashes each time unless I have both files open and just copy and "paste special" links. What I do is have a weekly file with loads of info that is linked to the previous week to get four and ten week trends and then link the weekly reports to a MONTHLY summary. Been doing this for about twelve years with no dramas.

Normally I was just using a find and replace search which was really quick and easy.

Solve : MS Security Essentials?

Answer»

Used to use Avast antivirus which l was quite happy with but it seemed to be getting rather resource hungry.
Changed to MS Security Essentials after reading a post from EvilFantasy, and it does seem to do what it says on the tin. Things seems a lot faster and it also has a very simple interface which is so easy to use.
Under Avast, and throughout the day, messages would pop up to say that the programs database has been updated.
Doesn't appear so for MSE (well not for me anyway). I have to manually update it each time. Am l missing the point somewhere?
Have read their sites notes and have made sure that no old virus software remains. Have reinstalled MSE but it still requires updates manually.
The ONLY other program that runs alongside is Spywareblaster.
Am l doing something wrong?
Oh *censored*, 23 hits and no answers to date.
Not to worry though, it's now been thoroughly answered via my alternative site, bleeping computers.
Sorry no one here could answer my question, but never mind.

Would mind sharing what you learned about the updating? Can it be configured to update automatically? Hello soybean,
Rightly or wrongly, this is what l was told but it sort of makes sense.....

Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates once every 24 hours and there is no setting within MSE to change the scheduled time or frequency. As such, you can always manually download the latest Microsoft Security Essentials updates via the update tab.

Announcement - Quote from MS
Microsoft has confirmed an issue with Microsoft Security Essentials that can occur when some PCs are regularly offline for extended periods and are frequently toggled between sleep/hibernate and active mode. In some cases, these machines may be delayed in receiving their regularly scheduled SIGNATURE updates.
Microsoft is aware of the problem and is working on a solution. In the interim, we recommend that users who are not regularly online and who frequently sleep/hibernate their machines REBOOT or manually update their signatures at least weekly to ensure they have the latest threat definitions downloaded.

Mmmm? Still think l'll stick with MSE for now, but knowing that l can always revert back to Avast. It seems Avast now have a new Version out (V5) which some people are having problems with and others are not. Will see how things progress.
Regards
WTC

I have ZERO issues with the new Avast ...installed on both Vista and Win7willythecat, thanks for that reply. It is informative.

I'm using Avast 5.0 with Win 7 and like it better than Avast 4.8. But, I may try WSE on with Win XP. And, since I use Sleep and/or Hibernation, it's good to know about the issue you explained. Quote from: willythecat on January 31, 2010, 08:40:31 AM

You have to have Windows Updated turned on to automatic to get regular daily updates with MSE. Doesn't matter if the COMPUTER has been turned off or ASLEEP as it will "call home" 10 minutes after it wakes up or is turned on. It all happens in the background and they are released every 24 hours (or so). I've seen that it is now every 12 hours but can't confirm that. That's as much as most of the other free AV's. Avast is the only one I know of that updates, or checks for updates, multiple times a day.

You can check here for solutions to fix any update issues.

Quote from: MSE Definitions/Signatures Update FAQ
MSE will also check 10 minutes or so after boot or wake from sleep if there is a network connection *and* the current updates are greater than 24 hours old.
It will *not* perform this catch up check if the current definitions were installed within the past 24 hours, but will wait until the next scheduled check time.

That was in November. I think they have fixed it by now.

according to the SI standards a Kilobyte is 1000 bytes, and the KIBIBYTE, mibibyte, etc are the "binary" prefixes that are the "standard".

Solve : Firewall Help Needed?

Answer»

I hope I'm putting this in the right category. If not please move it to the appropriate category.

I have a windows xp home edition computer with service pack3 with 1 GB of Ram

For a couple of years I have been using zone alarm free firewall with AVG antivirus. Also have Malwarebytes, SpyBlaster, and SuperAntiSpyware installed. The new Zone Alarm Free version has been giving me all sorts of trouble. Computer hangs up continually when trying to go various web PAGES. It's happened ever since I updated it.

I just uninstalled zone alarm and I am having absolutely no trouble with internet now. Here's my question. I have a dsl router that has a built in firewall. The model is Westell E90-610014-06 router. Should I still be using a 3rd party firewall? I want to be as safe as I can and just recently was infected with a few trojans which I got totaly removed with the help from evilfantasy in the spyware and virus forum.

If I NEED a 3rd party firewall, which one do you FELL would best SUIT my needs?

Thank you.
I use only the firewall in my Netgear router. I have the Windoze FW off. I've found that if I KEEP my AV & AS updated and run on a REGULAR basis I don't have any problems. I feel comfortable with my situation but I'm sure others will advise to use some software firewall as well.

Alan <>< Comodo Firewall does a decent job too.

Solve : Word - footnote renumbering after a delete?

Answer»

I have deleted a footnote in a .doc. The remaining footnotes have not been renumbered. I had deleted footnotes with automatic renumbering successfully months ago. I must have done something wrong this time!Did you use the same technique to create all footnotes? What was that technique? What version of Word? I am using Word 2000. I inserted the footnotes over the period in 2008 that I was developing the .doc. I used the normal method of clicking Insert Footnote in Normal View and then typing into the footnote at the bottom of the page. Later, I decided to incorporate some of the footnotes into the TEXT. I copied each footnote into the text then selected the note reference MARK and pressed Del. This removed the footnote and re-numbered all the subsequent ones. I did this hundreds of times over a period without any problems. I have tried to do it again in recent days. The Del has removed the note reference mark from the text but the footnote was not deleted from the footnote area and no re-numbering occurred. I had to reinstall Office some months ago when I had a problem with Excel. This means that I am now working with a different Word 2000. Some settings may be different but Help does not help me to SORT this matter out.Quote from: denisaf on January 29, 2010, 01:58:50 AM

I had to reinstall Office some months ago when I had a problem with Excel. This means that I am now working with a different Word 2000.
Not sure what you mean here. Word 2000 is Word 2000. Take a look at this article from Microsoft: How to reset user options and registry settings in Word. I suggest you skip the part of the article about How to delete a registry key and go down to Repair Word (Office) and focus your attention on the procedures from that point and below in the article.

Actually, I would try to procedure to generate a new normal.dot file first. Here's a reference on just that: www.elamb.org/howto/normal-dot.htmBy 'different Word2000' I meant one with different settings. I have generated a new 'normal.dot' as you suggested. that has not solved the problem. The numbering of the footnotes has got gaps in it where I have deleted. The text has the same gaps. I tried inserting TEST footnotes and then deleting them and that worked.Quote from: denisaf on January 29, 2010, 03:55:35 PM
I tried inserting test footnotes and then deleting them and that worked.
So, you mean that worked only for those test footnotes, and you still have the problem with all pre-existing footnotes? Yes, I still have the problem with pr-existing footnotes. I selected the note reference mark and then pressed Del. The mark disappeared but the footnote remained in the footnote panel and the numbers did not change for the following footnotes.I have found that this footnote delete and re-numbering problem with old footnotes does not occur with another old .doc I noticed on loading the problem file recently that a message containing the world 'corrupt' flashed up. I have not been able to get that message again. It is quite clear that the problem file has been corrupted in some WAY. soybean recommended I try 'How to delete a registry key and go down to Repair Word (Office) and focus your attention on the procedures from that point and below in the article.' I have done that. Detect and Repair did nothing so I re-installed Office 2000 as suggested. The footnote deletion and following re-numbering still does not work for old footnotes in the problem file.

Solve : Printing pages from Word .doc?

Answer»

I WANT to print isolated pages from a large .doc I find the page and check with Print Preview. I then Print and the Print page comes up. I click on CURRENT Page and then OK. The printed page is not the one I selected.Have you made sure that the cursor (insertion point) is in the current page?Is there a 'page in range" SETTING ? ?Page range
All
Current page
Pages

I have used Current page successfully and unsuccessfully
I have entered Pages in the box and that has been successful and unsuccessful. There I used the page numbers in the bar at the bottom of the screenHow many pages is this document? If you print a page with a low number, relative to the size of the document, is that more likely to be successful than if you go far down the document and select a page to print? I'm wondering WHETHER there's a certain point in the document at which page number selection for printing begins to not work correctly.There are 1320 pages in the .doc. I believe I have now worked out what the problem was. For example, I could input 'go to page 1289' to get to the start of the 'end notes' I wanted to print. On Normal View, Page No 1289 would come up. On Print View, the start of the 'end notes' were there with page number 1289 on it. Printing 'current page' gave the start of the 'end notes' with page number 1289. However, if I do a Print Review, the page number becomes 1337. I can print a number of pages if I put the correct page numbers form the Print Review. This applies THROUGHOUT the document. The problem stemmed from my not using the Print Review.
Thank you for your input. This problem has now been resolved by using the Print Review to obtain the page numbers. Thanks to those who have helped to resolve this issue.

Most of my shortcuts to my software on my desktop are not showing images.

I CANNOT USE the system restore feature in ordinary mode OR safe mode or even safe mode using the systemroot rstrui command.

Solve : installing W7 on Laptop?

Answer»

hey hello guys and gals, want to try to help a FRIEND to put W7 in for trials but I am a PC man not a laptopman. His is a great DELL XSP1300 or something. Tried to make a partition, that didnt work (contained small weird DELL partitions..LOL), tried to start the laptop with the W7 disc in it, no reaction, so I wondered....might it be the start-sequence in the BIOS that has to be altered? And if yes, how do I get into that BIOS...lol..PC is no problem, but laptops and DELL's....

could be this belongs to the hardware-section, so my apologies for that...but an answer i really would like...A laptop is just another computer. Except for the SIZE it is no different from a desktop. Watch the screen when the system FIRST boots and it will say something along the lines of: Press F2 to enter setup. At that point, press F2 (or whatever the key is). Then make sure the cd is at the top of the device boot order, save & exit. Boot to the Windows DVD, create the partition(s) you want to, and install.

Solve : Can you create virtual pc on an external drive??

Answer»

Can you create virtual PC on an external drive? Yes, You will be able to run Virtual PC on external HARD drive. You can follow the below article that will give you information on ‘WINDOWS Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode’:

HTTP://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee681737(WS.10).aspx

You can also refer the below link that will give you information on ‘Download Windows XP Mode’:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

You can also check out the below link for more information on Virtual PC.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/

Important Note: After installing Virtual PC on an external hard disk, to use Windows XP from within Virtual PC, the external hard disk has to be connected to the same computer. First you've to launch Virtual PC from the Start menu and then launch Windows XP. Launching Virtual PC by CONNECTING the external hard disk to a different computer will not work.

Hope this helps. As 2x3i5x said: yes, you can do it.

I wouldn't recommend it, though, as it'll be slow unless your external drive is eSATA or USB 3.0. USB 2.0 just doesn't cut it...VMWare workstation has built-in support for placing a entire VM and it's contents on an external drive. Won't even require the host to have vmware installed.

Microsoft must have thought about the fact that a Mac is far more secure than an IBM. That being the case maybe its that's why we now GAVE us a free AV software to protect their software on my PC.

Solve : New Computer!!!?

Answer»

I just bought a new computer and was looking for some software advice?? Which Anti-virus and scanning software is reccomended by the forum? and which of this preloaded software should I get rid of ASAP?? ie hulu desktop, hardware diagnostic tools, a bunch of HP programs....etc....Personally, the first thing I do when I get a new system is format and do a clean install. That way I know every program that is installed. But that's me. If you don't want to do that then uninstall any apps you don't want or NEED.

There are a lot of good AV's - pick a name you've heard of (other than McAfee) and you'll be fine. My personal choice is KASPERSKY, but as I said, there are a bunch of good ones. If you want something that's free go with Avira, AVAST, AVG or something similar. You should also install MalwareBytes and/or Super AntiSpyware and scan with either or both once every couple of weeks. I also suggest SpywareBlaster. You'll need to update the definitions weekly and it does NOT need to remain "resident".

Last, I strongly recommend the use of Disk Imaging software on a regular basis. Create an image now, before you make any changes. Then you can create images once a week or so and keep the 2 or 3 most recent images. Put the images on a 2nd HD (internal or external).Quote from: Allan on January 30, 2010, 07:08:57 AM

Personally, the first thing I do when I get a new system is format and do a clean install. That way I know every program that is installed. But that's me.
But, that's not an option if you have to use a Recovery partition to reinstall. At least, it's not on my 2 1/2 year old Compaq laptop. If I run the Recovery partition, it's going to install everything that was on the computer when new and it won't give me one bit of control over what gets installed.Yeah. I do tend to forget that not everyone has access to the original OS discs. Before I was a Microsoft Partner (which gives me a bunch of OS licenses) I would never have purchased a system that did not include the full OS on CD.thanks guys! great info... also i've been watching more movies and sports online... is there a lot of spyware on these sites (ie channelsurfing.net, justintv, ovguide.com)Unless you download something, the worst you'll get from such sites is a tracking cookie. STILL, SpywareBlaster (mentioned above) will block known malicious sites.Quote
Personally, the first thing I do when I get a new system is format and do a clean install. That way I know every program that is installed.
I wouldn't recommend it for an average user.

Beside McAfee, I'd also stay away from Norton and AVG.

Your other options:

- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html
- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
NOTE. During installation, Comodo will also allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine one Comodo product with some other product.

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use Comodo firewall..
If you decide to install Comodo Internet Security, or just Comodo firewall, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

As for websites safety....
Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.
I tried to uninstall (6-month free trial of microsoft office) USING add/remove program.... however the icon is still on my desktop.... any suggestions?? thanks again for all the info!!Just delete the icon (right-click on it and delete)

Salmon I Dont Want exe To Modify reg file

I want Software to convert .reg > .exe

a .reg file is a text file in this format

Code: [Select]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,2a,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00

i have a think pad t60 and i was trying to do a recovery. i was able to install disk one and go to recover from factory settings but now i am being asked to INSERT "Final C' disk. I do not have a final c disk. I have 6 disks in this set and have tried all of them. When i try to START the computer without a disk i get disk error hit any KEY to start. when i hit any key same message appears.
help!!!If you have your data backed up you can recover the OS by pressing F11 at start up. This will restore your laptop back to factory settings but if your data is backed up on the hard drive it will be lost and then F11 takes you to ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery program.

You can also download the Master boot record repair kit here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-62978.htmlI tried both methods and neither worked.
The F11 did nothing and the CD would not open, or run. I continue to get the disk error message.
Anything else I can try

Solve : Visual Basic 2008 - Combobox Confusion :P?

Answer»

I'm trying to get a combobox to read a CONF file so that i can permenantle save some stuff.

As a test the conf file contains:

1. Battlefield 1 (a directory of the file in brackets)
2. Battlefield 2 "
3. Battlefield 3 "
4. Battlefield 4 "

Now heres the code

Code: [Select] is_conf_made = Dir(confloc)
If is_conf_made <> "" Then
counter = 0
FileReader = New StreamReader(confloc)
Do
counter = counter + 1
line = FileReader.ReadLine()
If counter >= 1 And counter < 10 Then
txt_game_name = 3
Else
txt_game_name = 4
End If
game = Mid(line, txt_game_name)
game_name(counter) = game
cboxSelectgame.MaxDropDownItems = counter
If line = Nothing Then
EXIT Do
End If
If counter >= 1 Then
cboxSelectgame.Items.Add(game_name(counter))
MsgBox(game_name(counter))
End If
Now when i run this PROGRAM , the program will check for the conf file (and find it) and will then try and read all of the games i put there... When i run the program HOWEVER the following shows:

1
Battlefield 1
Battlefield 2
Battlefield 3
Battlefield 4

And i cant for the life of me get rid of that 1

does anyone know how i could do that?
LOL got it working:

Code: [Select]is_conf_made = Dir(confloc)
If is_conf_made <> "" Then
counter = 0
FileReader = New StreamReader(confloc)
Do
counter = counter + 1
line = FileReader.ReadLine()
If counter >= 1 And counter < 10 Then
txt_game_name = 3
Else
txt_game_name = 4
End If
game = Mid(line, txt_game_name)
game_name(counter) = game
cboxSelectgame.MaxDropDownItems = counter
If line = Nothing Then
Exit Do
End If
If counter >= 1 Then
If cboxSelectgame.Items.Contains("1") Then
cboxSelectgame.Items.RemoveAt(0)
End If
cboxSelectgame.Items.Add(game_name(counter))
MsgBox(game_name(counter))
End If
Me.Show()or you could write it properly to begin with... heh.

Code: [Select] Dim is_conf_made As String, confloc As String
Dim counter As Long, FileReader As StreamReader
confloc = "D:\combocontents.txt"

is_conf_made = IIf(File.Exists(confloc), confloc, "")

If is_conf_made <> "" Then
counter = 0
FileReader = New StreamReader(confloc)
Do Until FileReader.EndOfStream
Dim lineread = FileReader.ReadLine()
Dim game As String = lineread
cboxselectgame.Items.Add(game)
Loop

End If

You didn't have any of the variables you had declared.... well, you probably did, but conveniently forgot to actually include all the code. Also, you made no mention of your requirements whatsoever. Anyway, that segment above, once you strip out the assignment statement and DECLARATIONS at the top, will load the contents of each line in "conflac" into the combobox cboxselectgame.

Also, you should avoid anything from VB6 if there is an equivalent in .NET; in this case, the static File.Exists() would work better then Dir(). remove the maxdropdownitems property assigment. it's useless and doesn't do anything.

Lastly, your original issue is probably caused by you adding an item accidentally in the designer window.

And, the above reviews are focused on firewall. That explains why I wasn't finding anything; I was looking at anti-virus reviews.There are not very many independent firewall test sites but Matousec.com has been around for a while and I don't think there are many people who have solid grounds to disagree with them.

Also Mike Nash is a stand up guy and has never gone the way of "rouge-like" advertising, which is why many have never heard of Online Armor, or given in to the pressure (and money) of adding unnecessary bloatware to his software. soybean, Just to clarify (as it hasn't been done since you made the statement "OK, I see the free On line Armor product is a firewall and the paid version includes anti-virus."). Solve : DVD with 2 Movies?

Answer»

I ordered a free DVD from a boat company and here is what I got.

On my PC I see a FISHING show which is not the content I ordered at all but is still pretty cool.

On other office PC-s as well as my DVD player at home I see the promo movie from the boat company.

On all PC-s a program called InterActual run and asks to pick from
a: Play DVD with enhanced features
b: Play DVD without enhanced features

Doesn't make any difference which I click, the results are the same.

So the question is, how can this happen and how can I control what I view?

Thanks

I suspect, that DVD contains two movies in two different formats. On a top of it, your home computer, and your office computer may have different codecs INSTALLED, so your home computer picks up movie A, and your office computer, movie B.
Look at that DVD in Windows Explorer, and see what files you have there.I don't see anything on Explorer that looks like the "meat" of a video.

I have :

Folder common
Folder mac
Folder PDF Files ( the boat folks included some PDF files)
Folder SlideShow (more PDF stuff from the boat folks)
Folder Video_TS
Folder win
AUTORUN.INF
disc.id
ialaunch.exe
IAPlayer.dmg
MacOS.htm
README.htm

I assume that I cannot really see the "meat" on Explorer.

Can I See/Determine/Decide which Codec is used by each PC.

Is one of those "The standard is that there is no standard" deals?

Thanks

The Video_TS folder will hold the actual video files. What are the names, formats, and sizes of the files in that folder?Ok, partial contents of Video_Ts are below. The rest is just repeated through filename VTS_23 or so:

By clicking on the VOB-s I can TELL that they all belong to the promo from the boat folks.
I don't know what the .BUP-s & .IFO-s are but I get the feeling that there is still a large file on this cd that I can't see with Explorer.

My VXA backup tape software TRIED to claim the .BUP files but it was wrong. I tried to open one of them with DVD software and it didn't like it much more than the tape backup did.

Chapter 2: 01/19/2007 01:25 PM 437,133,312 VTS_02_1.VOB

There are your two movies.VTSxxxxx.VOB is a movie file.
As I suspected, you have two movies there:
- 437,133,312 VTS_02_1.VOB
- 272,277,504 VTS_01_1.VOB
As for, why different devices will play different movies, I'd put it into category "quasi-normal".
Computer A, computer B, DVD player may have different codecs installed, and that's why they pickup different movies.

Solve : Saving Utilities & Programs?

Answer»

Was just wondering what the best method is for saving various programs and such. For example, if you download some program such as CCleaner & Autoruns etc., is it best to leave the install in a folder on your computer or are you better off saving them all to a disk then delete them from the hard drive? Most of mine are free but some are paid for.
Am I wasting computer resources & memory by leaving them on the hard drive?

Would also like to thank everyone (especially Broni) for all their help so far & wish you all an early Merry Christmas...
It's minus 27 C here now....brrrr.

Thanks.This is really a personal opinion and Im sure other people will have their own, but I would back them up on another drive. They are installation files. Once the programs are installed, you dont need them so back them away. If something happens to your MACHINE, you have the backup to return to.
That said, I wouldnt backup the free programs, I would instead download the latest version if I needed it. The paid ones I would keep.I save installation files on CDs. Cheap, and safe.
I have 500GB HD + 250GB external (with full image there), but I still keep unnecessary stuff out of my HD.
BTW, less stuff helps with defrag time, for instance.
I keep free programs, too. It happened number of times before....some really good freebies, one day decided to go commercial.Thanks for the info. I have noticed some free stuff does get changed or becomes hard to find again sometimes...Will back everything up soon.

Great site ... I have actually been able to help my Mom & my Daughter with some minor problems thanks to all you guys at CH.

I got windows XP and I installed red alert (I said to my computer to run in it win95 mod) but now it gives the following message:

cannot find the entrypoint of the procedure SmapLS_IP_EBP_12 in DLL-file KERNEL32.dll

I HOPE I translated it correctly, I'm Dutch and here is the dutch message if it helps

kan entrypoint van procedure SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 niet vinden in DLL-bestand KERNEL32.dll I also keep downloaded program installation files, including free programs and utilities. And, yes, I keep them on my hard drive. But, they're on a separate PARTITION; that way, file FRAGMENTATION is not an issue. I also back them up on an external drive.mohkiller

No, you can't. I just downloaded that a few days ago (for burning an ISO). You have two options: Burn a data CD/DVD or burn an audio CD.It will burn DVD's...

You looked too quickly.Quote from: patio on December 09, 2007, 08:30:00 AM

It will burn DVD's...

Only data ONES though. Theoretically, it COULD copy a DVD movie, but it won't create the directory structure necessary for most DVD players to play it when you use your own files. At least not that I've noticed. Did I miss something?Q: Why does the burned DVD not work in my DVD Player?
A: You have to burn a Video-DVD using the UDF FILE format which is only supported by CDBurnerXP 4.0 and higher (File → DVD Video layout).

P/s : I found that in cdburnerxp website faq.

I must have read a review of an older version or something then. Sorry. I've only ever used it to make ISO -> DVD.

Solve : Vista: Media Center: DVD Burning?

If anyone can help me:
I recently purchased a new computer, a laptop with vista on it and am new to dvd burning and windows media center. I burned a couple DVDS, but a couple movies of mine won't work. Particularly the ones that are .AVI. The ones that are .mpg will burn but the ones .avi keep COMING up with some sort of an error or message saying wrong format or the such. Is there like a plugin for Windows Media Center that will let me burn .avi movies? Or do I have to convert them to .mpg? If anyone can help, it is greatly appreciated. Instead of Windows Media Center, try Windows DVD Maker (Start>All Programs).

Solve : Why do I have 2 My Docments??

Answer»

I'm trying to make Thank You cards for my husband (he's a mail carrier and likes to thank people that give him $$) and I'm importing a card design from one program to another card program. First I saved the card design to My Documents, then when I went to the program I'm going to use and told it to import from My Documents, another whole different My Documents came up that did not have that card on it. When I go onto the Desktop or from Start to My Documents, it is on that My Documents. But the when I click on the "Import Picture or Clip" from the card program I'm trying to use, it will not bring up the My Documents that has the design saved on it. It brings up the other one. How can I have 2 and how do I get around this problem? When I try to import the design from one to the other, the computer tells me that already exists in that format. I'm so confused and so computer stupid that I am about at my wits end with this. I know I've done it in years past, but this time it is not working. Anyone know what's happening here? Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks - Debby
Having multiple My Documents folders is normal. There is at least one for the Administrator and one for each user. When you click on Start is there not a user name at the top of the pop-up window? If there is then you are in that user.

Check the path to the My Docs folder you want by opening Documents and Settings and selecting the user.

Seems you may have saved the card design in one My Docs and are trying to import it from another.

Good luckThanks Dusty, I see what you are saying. Now, how do I put the two My Docs into one? I tried and every time I do, my computer tells me it can't be done because they are running in the same path.(??) It just doesn't make sense to me that when I am in the card program and I want to import a picture, it gives me My Docs, which of course is not the right one, and I can't select the one I need. Does anyone know of a way to merge these together?

Thanks, Debby
You don't want to merge them...this WOULD just duplicate everything.
In the program is there a drop down menu for file locations ? ?
If so simply navigate to the correct My Documents folder and open a file. It should then remember that LOCATION next time you open the program.It is normal to have more than one my documents folder on a computer per user account. Administrator, All Users, Guest and Owner are some of the standard names.

I am not sure about the path already being in use... Is that a message that the program tells you or does it seem to be a windows error?

One thing you could try is rebooting the PC. (Standard answer I know...) But the reason I say it this time is because if you switch users in Windows XP, it doesn't always close out the other user completely so some files stay "open". When you reboot, Windows shuts down and closes everything. Then you can log back into Windows and then you may be able to get to the file or path you need. Something to try which may or may solve the issue.

If that doesn't WORK, you will have to get a little more technical and copy contents of folders around. Fairly simple when you know where to look.

1. Click on Start, there should be name at the top of the menu, make a note of it.
2. Click on Start, click on my computer, then double click Local Disk (usually C:), we are looking for the folder "Documents and Settings"
3. When you click on that it will list all of the users folders on your PC.
4. Look for the folder named the same name you made a note of in STEP 1.
5. Double click that folder, in that folder double click the folder named Username's Documents. (So if the user is Debbie, click on Debbie's Documents.)

Where you should be is the My Documents folder when you login as the username in step 1.

If the card template is there. You may need to re-path the location within the Card program.
If the card template is not there. You will have to go back a few steps to #3 and look through the other users folders, find the template files, and copy them to your folder.

Hopefully that helps... back to work now. :-)Quote from: redeye on December 07, 2007, 08:40:02 AM

It is normal to have more than one my documents folder on a computer per user account. Administrator, All Users, Guest and Owner are some of the standard names.

I believe it's normal to have ONE "My Documents" folder per user. Debby - part of our problem in trying to advise is that you have not said how many accounts there are on your computer or whether you are/were working as Admin or User when the files you want to import were created. There will be a My Docs folder for Admin and each User listed in the Docs & Settings folder.

If you only have two (Admin and another which we'll call Username) then I suggest you locate the file(s) which you want to import then copy them to whichever folder does not contain them.

So navigate to c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents and try to locate the file(s) there. If the file(s) do not exist in that folder then:

Navigate to c:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents to locate the file(s) and then Copy them to c:\D & S\Admin\My Docs or you could go back and Save the card design to the specific My Docs folder which currently does not contain it.

And vice versa of course.

Yes, I appreciate that this is just a workaround and the files will be duplicated but it might get you off the hook.

If you wish to you can change the location of your Username\My Documents folder - see here - but I suggest you try the above first.

Good luck Dusty, I have never set up my computer to be used as administrator or a certain user name. When the computer GUY re-did everything on my computer, he just put down Debby, so that is all I know about other accounts and user names. Just Debby. I have tried to move the design from one My Docs to another (and it tells me the path is the same), to other card programs, to Microsoft Word, a 3-1/2 floppy, and anywhere else I could find, with no luck! Time is running short so I will have to go with a card program I know and not worry with that particular design this year. I do, however, want to learn how to work with this particular problem, so I will do what you have suggested.

Thanks a bunch! Debby
Debby.
Although not a solution Here are some wonderful download card images FREE courtesy of the Hubble Space Telescope...

I'd suggest saving them to the desktop or a folder created by you so the card program can find them...

Enjoy !

2.3. Click Start, Run, type: "C:WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce" (without quotations) and then press Enter to install the Windows Update engine. (There is a space between "C:WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and "/wuforce")

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, please save the downloaded file to the D: drive, because the file cannot be launched directly from the C: root directory.

3. Reinstall Windows Installer 3.1 (important)

3.1. Press Start and choose Run.

3.2. Type in "cmd" (without quotation marks) and press OK.

3.3. In the command line, type in the following command and press Enter:
MSIexec /unregister (Note: there is a space before the “/”)

3.4. Then, type in the following command and press Enter:
MSIexec /regserver (Note: there is a space before the “/”)

4. Now, try running updates again. If they still fail, then you’ll need to do a reinstall of Windows Installer:

4.1. Start, click Control Panel, and click Add/Remove Programs to check if Windows Installer 3.1 has been installed.

4.2. If it has, highlight and remove it.

4.3. After that, reinstall Windows Installer 3.1 from the following link.

Try Nickc1976 idea first. Otherwise it falls into these 2 categories: 1) Have you check the services? Maybe Auto Update is disabled. 2) You haven't activate your windows version. You can't update unless you activate with VALIDATE key. Uncle BILL Gate tried to protect his Windows Update by using WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage).

You did not say WHY Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats did not work for you. I'm an office user. After visiting that page, I see no reason why that is not a solution. Can you explain WHY it didn't work for you? To exactly what extent to you attempt to follow the procedure there?

I was inclined not to offer any assistance with this after reading your rude remark. Let's just say I'm doing it in the spirit of Christmas. Here's the solution. Go back to the person who created the document, or someone else who has Word 2007, and ask them to open the file in Word 2007 and then Save As a Word 97-2003 document or another format that you know you can view.Quote from: Jade on December 10, 2007, 08:35:17 PM

Solve : OE annoying message?

Answer»

Does anyone know how to get rid of the annoying message in Outlook Express. It says something like "Windows can compress your messages--This MAY take SEVERAL minutes". With a 200gig hard drive, I am not really worried about it. Besides I delete the all the TIME anyhow.Hard drive space isn't the ISSUE. It's about OE keeping message files optimized and keeping OE working well. So, let it compact messages, as it's prompting you. Be sure to let it finish the process; don't interrupt it.

Solve : Outlook 2002 can't find contacts?

Answer»

Hi-

thank you in advance.

i recently saved my .pst file and put it into the proper folder on my HARD DRIVE (USING xp pro and outlook 2002)

everything seems fine. i can see my contacts when i click on the 'contacts' shortcut in outlook.

however, when i open a new email message and click on "to:" i get this error message:

"The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do not have permissions. FOr information on how to remove this folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Outlook HELP."

Per usual, Micro help, did not help.

Anyone have some insight into this?

thank you very much,
JL
It needs to be "imported"...
You are able to view it because it's associated with the program...but when you go to use it the file is not there.
Choose Import Contacts from the dropdown tool menu...will this fix work for me too....here's my problem

my old pc went belly up (was running windows xp) so went and bought another one.
Got my new pc home (which runs vista premium) and loaded it with microsoft office and set up OUTLOOK email accounts etc ok BUT i really need the contacts list from my old pc.
I removed the HDD from old pc and mounted it as an ext HDD and can access it etc
but when i try to get into it to look at the contacts i need, it only opens the outlook on my new pc.

so in summary... i have outlook loaded in 2 places , new pc and old pc (Ext HDD).
it will only open outlook on new pc but my distribution list are on old HDD....HELP.smacko WELCOME Aboard...
It's best to start a new Topic even though it's a similar issue so it can recieve the proper attention.

Solve : Links & URLs won't open in Outlook 2003?

Answer»

A RECENT problem in Outlook 2003, running Windows XP. I can no longer open click-through links from anyone, and continue to get a message that suggests I consult my administrator. I am the administrator, and I have no IDEA what's happening, since it just started. Not USING Microsoft's FIREWALL. The message says "this operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." What restrictions would there be?

I can cut and paste URLs, but can't open "Click Here" and retrieve other SIMILAR types of links. Any ideas?

Would reinstalling Windows XP help, or would I have to completely reinstall ALL of my myriad programs?What is your default browser?It's actually my wife's computer and she's using AOL's Netscape.I assume, Netscape is her default browser?
Try to make Internet Explorer, or Firefox her default browser, and see, if same thing will happen.

After you try replacing the battery on the motherboard, and if that doesn't fix it, here's what I do to work around it:

Solve : Restoring legit win xp home from bad xp pro?

Answer»

What? no clueless icon for the posting? Can't think of a better place for it.

As I explained as background in my malfunctioning browser post, SOMEONE "fixed" a problem in my win xp home (5.1.2600), by what appears to be overlaying (much of my data, and it seems some other parts of my original OS are still there) his pirate xp pro. At the time, I knew virtually nothing about computers except how to use one, and was happy it was fixed. However, SP2 came along, wouldn't install, & after the aborted installation, TOLD me the OS was not legit.

I managed to get along without SP2, used several different browsers with success, forced installation of some SP2 .sys, .dlls, etc. and life was OK. Why didn't I simply reinstall my original xp home? The computer didn't come with a restore disk, or copy of the OS. When I originally started to have the problems (which later caused me to kill the gui interface & led to the bogus xp home) the 1st time, Compaq grudgedly sent me to a site where I downloaded about 10 disks to use for reinstalling. I never used them, and will have to explore the disks or contact Compaq to even know what order they need to be inserted.

Now, I have a Maxtor 300GB drive, which I have partitioned into N: 200GB (media), M: 49.9 GB (empty), L: 47.9GB (empty). The original Compaq (5000 series), drive is partitioned into C: 33.3GB, & D(FAT32): 3.89GB. D partition holds the original win xp home OS, which the disks are needed to help restore.

Before I do anything IRREVERSIBLE, I thought I'd use the Maxtor maxi-blast to clone the C & D drives into the L partition. The maxi-blast is also capable of making a boot disk. So if the restoration tanks , I wouldn't just be left with a heavy piece of house clutter.

Does this make any sense? I know it's only step 1. I do seem to remember reading something about problems with the registry and 2 bootable drives. I'm no tech princess, and this is a daunting, way overdue task. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to get in touch with Compaq about your 10 CD`s and where is your Product key

You need to get in touch with Compaq about your 10 CD`s and where is your Product key
so you can Format and reinstall LEGALLY

I have the product key. Win xp home came preinstalled on the computer, and the product key can be found in several places. The 10 CD's were Compaq's response to my saying that the computer didn't come with a restore disk or copy of the OS. They were downloaded from a site Compaq sent me to, and I was only able to access the site once. The disks are supposed to activate the win xp stored on the D partition, and restore original win xp home. This is what I am trying to do, restore the OS to the legal OS.I would like to know what's on these 10 discs.
As far as I know, you'd only need 2.
1) the OS disc
2) restore disc

So what's on the other 8?I haven't even looked at these disks since 2003, & never tested them. Only 1 disk (labeled Q55 setupdx) has content.

I'm sorry, apparently these "disks" are 1.44Mb floppy disks.
I assumed they were cd's.........

Here's what you do, put the 1st disk in your A drive.
Click Start--->run
than type:
a:\setup.exe

See what happens.

If any problems occur, please let us know.The contents listed in the above post are on 1 CD. As I stated before, all the other disks were blank. It's possible that at the time I screwed up the copying, but more likely I was only allowed 1 download at this Compac site, and for some reason repeated the download process and wound up with the EXTRA disks. Remember, I knew less than nothing about computers @ the time - slightly more now - & its very possible.

Before I start throwing disks in, I have to make a copy of the C & D drive, which is why I asked the questions & was LOOKING for feedback in my original post.

Solve : windows media player 11, library not responding?

for some reason my copy of windows media player 11 is no longer responding to my commands when i try to add or remove songs to and from the player library. The library already has songs in it from not to long ago but i haven't tried to mess with it before 2 days ago in a long time. The songs are on the computer but they wont play. When i click on them from the library i get a MESSAGE saying they cant find the files as if the player is looking for them in an external HD. Also when i try to add a folder for monitoring, the player accepts the commands but doesn't save them. when i go back into the player it is blank as if i don't have any folders set to be monitored.

I have tried to delete the windows media player and re add it but my computer will not allow me to, stating that i don't have sufficient privileges to delete this file.(*censored*!!!!!)

My computer is part of the HP Pavilion dv9000 series. 9310 i believe. About 6 months old.

My OS is Windows VISTA Home Premium (which i fear may be the root cause to all my computer issues)

Do you still have your music files stored in "My Music" or some other file? I'm pretty sure if you don't, than Windows Media Library will just list them...I'm sure you have to have the files stored separately in order to access, play or change them. But Windows Media player wont acknowledge ANY file on my computer and i cant delete and reinstall the program.Try different methods to uninstall WMP:

Hello, I've got a friend who can't remember his password for anything, this is on a Windows 2000 system, and I was wondering, instead of formatting the whole shebang, is there a way I can just reset the password to the windows login?Well, here's one option but it COST $40. http://www.password-reset.com/?gclid=CL-wuKqGqJACFReQGgodzkud6g

Another one: Windows Key, $45.

Ah, found some freebies: Top 4 Free Windows Password Recovery Tools

I haven't used any of these, so I can't recommend a specific tool for this.Try this
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Its free and I KNOW it WORKS, I have used it a few times

Its quite straight forward, you have to create a linux boot disk (Note this is an IMAGE on the above website, with instructions, just follow that) and then boot from it. It then gives you the option to change the admin password after it boots upAwesome, thanks for the help

Solve : AVG Illegal Action??

I bought avg 7.5 which has 2 year license. It was on sale at Office Depot for 39 DOLLARS, with 10 dollar rebate. I jumped on that one Quote

Then noticed that AVG got as far as scanning a program NAMED BitLord
Strange. I use BitLord, as well, and I'm not having any problems with AVG...
Ehhhh, COMPUTERS....who knows...Dairyman, I downloaded AVG from the AVG site, as below:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0

Still no problems so far, so it looks like BitLord was causing the previous problem.I think I know where DragonFly got that information from. He is probably running a VERY old version of AVG and didn't upgrade the program itself. I seem to remember AVG sent out an e-mail or SOMEHOW sent a message through their updates that you need to download a new version of the program itself because the old version would no longer be supported after December 2006. Does this sound familiar to anyone?Well, I did some research and it looks like it was just an effort to get more people to actually purchase the program. All version prior to 7 would no longer be supported with updates.

However, the message sent out and the difficulty they created by not adding in links from their MAIN page to the free version anymore created confusion and a lot of people started reporting that AVG was ending their free offering.

Solve : Good ip hider/mask??

Answer»

Does anyone know of a good program to mask or have my ip addresse as one in another country? LIKE, my ip addresse right now is canada, and I would like to know if anyone knows of a good program so that it seems as though I have an ip addresse of another country (ex. germany, ausrtrailia, france). And I'm hoping the program won't just work for internet explorer/mozilla firefox, but for a program that has .exe. ThanksTOR is a possible solution, however it won't only mask your ip it actually routes you through that address. It works with most applications, irc, FTP, etc. very SIMILAR to a proxy however each new connection garners a new route and thus a new ip address.

For more info tor.eff.org

PS - If you find one that will limit your proxy connections to those in the US please let me know. Hopping to Germany then back to READ cnn can be painfully SLOW at times depending on the route that has been chosen.

Solve : Problem playing DVD's?

Answer»

My dad was given an HP laptop by his boss and its about 5 years old. And it has a CD and DVD player in it. Well, we go to play a DVD just to try it out and it says "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with DIGITAL copy protection between your DVD drive, DECODER, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card." But when I try to play DVD's (burnt) of home videos. It plays fine.

Its running Windows Media player 11. I also tried updating the driver to the video card, but it doesnt find anything better to update with.

What could be the problem?From Microsoft:

Quote

You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

* Your DVD decoder software needs to be configured. If you have another DVD player PROGRAM installed on your computer, play the DVD using that program, and then try playing the DVD in Windows Media Player again.
* There was a problem configuring your video card. Restart your computer, and then try again.

A troubleshooter is available to help you solve this problem. To troubleshoot the problem, SEE the DVD Troubleshooter in Windows Help.

Note

* To play DVDs, you must have a DVD-ROM drive and a software or HARDWARE DVD decoder installed on your computer. If you do not have a compatible DVD decoder installed, DVD-related commands, options, and controls do not appear in the Player and you cannot play DVDs. By default, Windows does not include a DVD decoder. For more information about DVD decoders, see the DVD Decoder Plug-ins page at the Microsoft Web site.
...or get VLC Player: http://www.videolan.org/
