Solve : QuickTime update panel is in foreign language, why??

Answer»

Hey guys, I've discovered SOMETHING WEIRD and I'd like to know whether this is normal or not. It sure seems not. My son was using my computer about a week ago and installed QuickTime (version 7.3). Prior to that, I had not been using QuickTime and did not have it installed in my computer for a very long time.

I discovered that, if I click on Help, Update Existing Software, a panel appears with all text in a foreign language. The image below is what I see:

I'm wondering whether I should uninstall QuickTime and re-download it - if I'm going to reinstall it - and use the new download to install it. I presume my son got it from a reliable source, but this foreign language situation seems quite abnormal. Quote

I should uninstall QuickTime and re-download it - if I'm going to reinstall it - and use the new download to install it
Sounds like a simple plan..Well, do you have QuickTime? Can you confirm this is abnormal? Yes, i have it in English....Besides, I see no single danger with uninstalling/installing QTI read a post about 2 or 3 months ago of a guy who was having the same problem, except it was always coming up in Chinese, not Spanish as yours is.

Here's what he said he did to fix it:
Had to OPEN QuickTime.msi in Orca, but then click on 'View->Summary Information, and delete all of the support languages (1033,1036,1031,1041,1043,1040,2052,1034,1030,1035,1042,1044,1053,1028) except 1033.Quote
I should uninstall QuickTime and re-download it - if I'm going to reinstall it - and use the new download to install it.
I did it, but it didn't change anything. The update panel is still in Spanish.

quaxo ---- I'm not familiar with Orca. I gather I would need to download it and then use it to edit QuickTime.msi. Is that basically it?

Even if that's a solution, I'd like to know why this is happening. It doesn't make sense. I looked around and found similar questions with no answers.

Check what regional settings your computer has (Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options). I know that on my girlfriend's computer, some of the same programs that pop up in English on mine automatically pop up in Chinese on hers because of those settings. Not sure about Quicktime, SINCE neither of us have it installed. quaxo, you hit the nail on the head. I opened Regional and Language Options and selected the Advanced tab. In the box for Language for non-Unicode programs was Spanish. I changed that to English (United States), clicked Apply, then OK, and restarted my computer. Upon restarting, I opened QuickTime, then went to the Update Existing Software panel. It was in English. Excellent. GLAD you got that fixed.

Didn't occur to me at first, then I remembered changing that setting for her on her computer because she's from Taiwan, so of course her native language is Chinese. After that, a lot of programs changed like that: World of Warcraft updater, some of her Chinese programs which wouldn't display correctly unless that was changed, etc. etc. etc....

Solve : my AVG is stopping my internet connection?

Answer»

i have a windows xp 64bit computer with AVG. i dont really know much about computers but one day i turned it on and our AVG box in the taskbar was black and grey. a popup came up that said we had red components and that the email scanner part of it was not fully functional. i thought maybe it needed an update or something so i connected to the INTERNET (we have dial up, we use earthlink if you need that info) and tried to update it but it said there was no internet connection. now i know the internet connected because the phone line when i picked it up was making that annoying noise. my husband had downloaded something off limewire the night before that may have been a virus so i was THINKING that has something to do with it. he has tried to fix it himself, at one POINT the computer wouldnt even recognize the modem, but he restored the computer and that FIXED that. i dont know what else to do so i started googling today and found you guys. i hope you can help, and if you need any other information let me know and i will ask my hubby when he gets home from work. thanks alot!If you are hearing noise on the phone line the modem has not yet connected to anything...try waiting a bit longer and opening a browser window to make sure you are in fact connected before grabbing the updates.
The grey icon is NORMAL for AVG...it indicates that it needs updated.i have tried that, it says im not connected, i opened firefox, internet explorer, messenger, they all say i got no connection but i know i do because the 2 little computers are in the taskbar that show me connected, and when i pick up our house phone it makes that noise that it does when you're connected.Try going into Safe Mode(with internet) and see if you can get on the internet. If you can't, it may have something to do with your ISP.

Solve : goobox?

Answer»

I was looking through My Programs and ran across a file called Goobox. It appears to be some kind of cd ripper program. I don't know how it got on my computer. Does anyone know anything about it. Is it a safe program or should I get rid of it?As far as I know Goobox is a CD player/ripper for the Linux Gnome desktop. I didn't know there was a Windows version of it now.

I've just done some searching and can't find a Windows version of it anywhere.I don't think I downloaded it. I have never seen it before today. I do run windows xp sp2.If you don't need & didn't download it...get rid of it!

Kind of a Cool name when you think about it?Who else uses the machine ? ?My 28 yr old SON STOPS by now and then. I found the file name was ACTUALLY poogle and it is a file left by one of the antispy programs I had run. Now besides my hair falling out, can't hear worth a d..m, now I can't SEE I GUESS. Solve : Outlook Express Email Question?

Answer»

I use m/s OUTLOOK Express with a cable company isp, which is constantly sending me overquota messages. Many of the emails i've accumulated deal with an association's "official" mail which I don't want to lose and want to be able to refer back to. Does anyone know how I can save the OE folders with the emails included to other folders outside OE but within windows XP as the OE folders get HEAVY?? (i.e. my documents) I would really appreciate any tips as I am not a very seasoned computer GUY. Jolly28JOLLY28 ........ Are you leaving copies of the delivered Emails on your server ?
That would account for all the overquota messages.
If you must have them on the server, usually the ISP have plans which allow you to have LARGER Email storage for a fee.
You can save the received messages anywhere you wish outside of OE ....... then delete it from OE and you wont have any issues any longer.

How many folders do you have in OE? I get the IMPRESSION you should create more folders for specific topics/senders. That can help a lot in managing messages in OE. I have over 200 folders in OE and the overall size of messages files is about 1.38GB.

dl65, why don't you move this thing up where it belongs, in Software (most likely) or Windows?

Solve : outlook contacts recovery?

Answer»

my old pc went belly up (was running windows xp) so went and bought another one.
Got my new pc home (which runs vista premium) and loaded it with microsoft office and set up OUTLOOK email accounts etc ok, BUT i really need the contacts list from my old pc.
I removed the HDD from old pc and mounted it as an ext HDD and can access it etc
but when i try to get into it to look at the contacts i need, it only opens the outlook on my new pc.

so in summary... i have outlook loaded in 2 places , new pc and old pc (Ext HDD).
it will only open outlook on new pc but my distribution list are on old HDD....HELP.
Did you ever export ALL your old Outlook to a .pst file? If so, do a search on the old hard drive (or wherever you exported it) and do an import on your new install of O.

Alan <>< No, I have not done anything with it, its just sitting on my old HDD, (mounted as an ext drive)
how would I export it ? (you can see i'm no computer whizzkid ...)

thanksTo see these files you will have to make sure you are showing hidden/system files. You can find your old files in the following locations. Most will import straight into your new Office install. Since your old install was XP, those are the locations you'll want to look in.

Outlook file locations:
Quote

Personal Folders file (.pst)

Including archive .pst files.

Windows Vista drive:\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 drive:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Quote
Offline Folders file (.ost)

The .ost file is SYNCHRONIZED with the items on the server running Microsoft Exchange. Because your data remains on the Exchange server, you can recreate this .ost file on your new computer without having to back up the .ost file.

Windows Vista drive:\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 drive:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Quote
Personal Address Book (.pab)

Windows Vista drive:\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 drive:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Note Personal Address Books (.pab) are no longer supported by Office Outlook 2007. When you upgrade to Office Outlook 2007, you are prompted to import any .pab file into Contacts. If you choose not to import the .pab file, you can import it later by using the Import and Export command on the File menu.

Normally, for these Outlook files in the file associations, there is no specified program to open them with, only the information of what type of file it is. If you tried to open it, it probably asked you what program to try to open them with and it sounds like you've selected the wrong program.

Actually, you shouldn't open these directly, you should import them into directly Outlook (File menu -> Import and Export).yes thats what i've done - selecetd wrong prog.
is there (an easy) way of getting it back to outlook as OPPOSED to infopath as it currently is.

when i click on the properties of the file and select change, it does not give me
the option of outlook....

ps thanks for your help on thisActually, it wasn't MEANT to have any program associated with it in the 'Opens with' part. The only way to return it to that state would be to delete the current association and recreate it manually. However, you could also just change the 'Opens with' program to Outlook.exe located in your MS Office directory, depending on where you installed it. Since it's not in that list, you'll have to click the Browse button and locate Outlook.exe yourself. That would at least correct the problem of it trying to open in the wrong program. Whether or not it will actually work properly, I'm not sure. I've never tried associating that file with Outlook.

To permanently add the contents of those files to Outlook though, you'll need to import them as I described before. However, you could also just change the 'Opens with' program to Outlook.exe located in your MS Office directory, depending on where you installed it. Since it's not in that list, you'll have to click the Browse button and locate Outlook.exe yourself.

How ...exactly would i do this.

I did import the files as you instructed and they opened up no problem, great.

( i may not need to change them back to outlook as it WORKED, but it would be nice to know).

again

many thanks

Solve : Excel Sum Preview?

Answer»

How do I activate the sum preview in Microsoft Excel? I mean when you hold the mouse over a set of NUMBERS the sum of them appears in the bottom toolbar WITHOUT having to use the sum function in a cell.Depends on what version you're using. If you're using the latest version (2007) just right click the bottom status bar and choose the OPTIONS you want to show (sum, average, count, etc.)With my Excel 2003, it's always displayed the sum of numbers from such CELLS at bottom, as far as I know. Of course, the Status bar must be displayed. Do you have your Status bar, the bar at bottom of an Excel window, ENABLED?

Solve : Outlook email client?

Answer»

When I try to run OUTLOOK, I get an error message that says: "Outlook requires Outlook Express 4.01 or greater". Apparently, I inadvertently deleted an Outlook Express library that Outlook shares and now Outlook will not run. The message says to run "IE5Setup.exe" to reinstall Outlook Express. I found the PROGRAM on the CD, but it will not install because there is a later VERSION of IE on the System. The OS is Windows XP Pro w/SP2 and the Outlook is part of Office XP Standard 2002.

I found an article in the MS KNOWLEDGE Base regarding this topic, but it doesn't really tell you how to install Outlook Express in XP. I can't figure out low to download Express from the MS Download Center; so now I'm stuck.

Has anyone encountered this problem or know how to fix it?

Thankshttp://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

Outlook Express doesn't have its own installer, it is an option of Internet Explorer. You will most likely need to reinstall the latest version of Internet Explorer with the Outlook package included.

Solve : MS Office '03 Diagnostics?

Answer»

Is there anyway to perform a diagnostic test or any TOOLS that can be run to see if anything is wrong with the install, or more importanly if it may have been corupted in some way in MS Office.

Window's operates fine. I've completed all the preliminary actions in the virus and spyware section of this forum.

I was attacked 2 years ago, Dell actually reformatted (online) my system and they reinstalled the O/S and I reinstalled MS Office. It's been clean ever since but I THINK somewhere after that attack is when I started noticing problems with my email.

Word is my editor of course; I use Outlook and some Power point only.

Anomolies occur for example; in the beginning I couldn't C&P a .gif FILE. I could recieve one through an email but I couldn't C&P it say to my doc's or another email or word .doc. Originally I was able to C&P a .jpeg or .bmp but even now that has stopped. There are a few other things but you get my point. I can C&P .txt .log to notpad. Recently; if I intend to start a new email from 'my pictures folder' and rt CLICK a file and select 'send' > mail recipient; the file will attach to the new email. If I add text to the new email, the email successfully sends but the text doesn't go with it to the receiver.
If I select a 'new' email, add my text and then select 'attach'. The recipient gets both the attachment and the text in the body of the letter.

Many times, there is a specific mail recipient who's ISP is denying my mail. It is usually returned to me after 10 attempts. No consistency. It's not everybody but it is specific addresses.

If there is anyone out there who understands this problem; I can save the next denied delivery mail explanation if you know how to read them. There are some specifics in the notice addressing SPAM Headers and CMD notices. The receiving ISP is heading it off at the pass like it is supposed to. Still I have many of recipients I have no problem with.

I like fixing stuff on my own, I've already removed office using the windows install/remove control page and SUBSEQUENTLY reinstalled office once with no change.

I'm looking for Diagnostics and repair tools.

Thanks.

Solve : OE sent status 'warning'?

I've checked the SMTP settings - all fine

I've using Norton anti-virus and internet security but no other productsHave you tried contacting your ISP ? ?
Does Internet Security include a firewall ? ?

I've honestly never seen this...I have and have run through all the setting with them - nothing flagged up there.

The strange thing is the laptop has been set up like this for over a year, I haven't changed anything or loaded a new programme SINCE i got it. I've tried disabling the norton email filters for both INCOMING and outgoing mail and the inboaund firewall, but it still happens!

would it be worth REMOVING OE and starting again? That would be my next suggestion...
Perhaps Quaxo or SOYBEAN will chime in with their excellent guides to backing things up before you wipe it....that would be helpful as i'm unsure how to do it properly without lossing any info

Solve : Microsoft Word - cannot delete control toolbar?

Hi,

I have tried the Microsoft suggested method to delete a TOOLBAR:

On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click the Toolbars tab.
In the Toolbars box, select the custom toolbar you want to delete.
Click Delete.

Doesn't work! [/b] Please advise.

Thanks,
Joe
Sounds to me like you're not really talking about a "custom toolbar", you're talking about one of Word's standard toolbars. And, those can not be deleted; of COURSE, they do not need to appear on your actual toolbars, the ones you have enabled, but they remain in the system so that they can be enabled.

If you've TRULY created a custom toolbar, then you will be able to delete it. Also, keep in mind Word's standard available toolbars, 30 if I counted right, can be customized. I presume you mean a toolbar you've added to that list of standard toolbars. As you can see in the image below, not being able to delete any of the standard toolbars is normal.

Solve : booting to cloned drive?

Answer»

This actually was the 1st part of restoring my system, but I think it was lost in my last question. I'm going to clone my DRIVE onto an external drive partition set up for this purpose. If the restore tanks, I'm going to have to boot to this drive. HOWEVER, I once remember reading something along the lines of complications with this, as the registry entries show program locations in their former locations, not on the newly-resident partition.

Is this true? If so, is there a solution for this? I'll be using Maxtors' Maxi-blast to make the cloned drive. It also makes a boot disk. I'm confused about this, too. Would the Maxtor boot disk, if used, be attempting to boot to my (worst case scenario), newly-deceased C drive, or the cloned drive? It will not boot to an external drive if it is anything newer than Win2K....unless some SERIOUS finagling is done.
This is by design.
You will have to hook it up internally as a master drive.Quote from: patio on December 13, 2007, 04:14:56 PM

OK, that does sound intimidating.
Is this because of the references in the registry to the location of the programs in their former place on the other hard drive? Or is this some sort of hardware complication? All I've even done hardware-wise is install new memory, DETACH the malfunctioning floppy "A" drive, and insert the internal Maxtor drive into an external case & connect via USB.

All I would need, at bare minumum, from this clone, is to be able to restore what I had (flawed though it might be), in case the restoration crashed & burned. If its possible to do this, I don't need to use the clone as a permanent substitute for the C drive at this time. This would be possible?Quote

Go ahead and clone your drive to the external hdd. Then assume that your restore has bottomed out and try booting from the external drive, there's no need to restore anything, just boot from the external. No harm can be done.

I have lately done something similar to what you are attempting but using an Internal slave hdd as the destination. I use Seagate Disk wizard to clone to a dedicated backup hdd which, after cloning, is bootable. You can view my post and the responses here.

Good luckHeathen,

As the above advice is contradictory don't let it confuse you.
What program are you using to clone with ? ? This may make a difference as different ones vary slightly.
If you are looking for a backup for your drive you may be better off with an image program such as Ghost or Acronis True Image.
The advantage to this is the image does not need to exist on a hard drive...it can be burned to CD/DVD and restored at anytime using the program itself.
This would free up your external drive for other uses...

Cloning is better suited for simply replacing a hard drive for a newer/ larger one.
The clone has to exist on another drive with nothing else on it for it to be used successfully.

The other advantage of an image program is you can also run scheduled backups that will update your image file on a preset schedule. This means your 1 image is updated with any new data / Programs etc. that have been added since the last image was created.

Let us know...Thanks, but unfortunately, too late, I'm already confused
I did try the procedure RatPack outlined (as well as his boot.ini), cloned the drive onto the "L" partition on the external drive, because it did seem simpler, but it didn't work. Instead, after choosing to boot from Win xp slave, I got the following message:

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information."

You had mentioned that cloning was better for replacing the drive. As I'm getting that low whine upon startup from the C drive, I figured that I would eventually have to replace the drive, so why not work with a clone instead of an image? Another concern was that I had heard many times that going from win xp pro to home means reformatting the drive. If I reformat, and something goes wrong with the xp home installation, would I still be able to recover the drive with an image? Do you think I should replace the clone with an image? I am using Maxtor Maxi-blast 5, which was developed by Acronis.

First of all, ignore RatPack's post completely, he doesn't know what he's talking about. He says in his post he's only been cloning to an internal disk, not external. Like patio said, you can't boot XP from an external drive without doing some serious customization. XP was designed this way.
I would suggest going with an image as well. It TAKES up less room and is better suited for backup as you can compress it. You will still be able to go back even if you format and install another operating system on the disk. Good! Thank you, off to make an image, also get ready for monthlong holiday houseguest. Back later with the results. Sigh.
Since Ratpack MADE a reply in his thread here.: (which is now locked)

I just want to make a quick comment here.
No, getting XP to boot from a external drive is not as simple as mirroring a running XP installation to an external drive. What patio and I have been trying to tell him is that XP have built in safeguards that prevents it from being booted from an USB device. These safeguards needs to be removed in order to create an USB bootable XP installation.
There are guides on how to do this, but I don't even see the point in posting one here since imaging is a much faster solution to the problem you had. I.e. creating a backup of your old XP installation just in case.

Solve : [RESOLVED] DLL Entry Point error? Not good...?

Answer»

I just installed Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0. When I installed CFP 3.0, I received this error:

The procedure entry point IsThreadDesktopComposited could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll.

I ignored the error and installation went WELL. No problems.
But now it gets worst...

Every time this firewall trys to do something (e.g update, learn an application) I receive this damned error every time!! Ugh!

Does anyone have a solution?

I USE Windows XP Home Edition with SP2.

Thank you for your help.Might not be useful, but here is some more information:

I opened Comodo Firewall Pro in DEPENDENCY WALKER. USER32.DLL is HIGHLIGHTED in red. When I click on USER32.DLL, IsThreadDesktopComposited is highlighted in red too. This might help you.
Thank you so much! It works now. I created a backup file of DWMAPI.DLL and renamed DWMAPI.DLL to DWMAPI.OLD.

Once again thank you.

Solve : No volume in Windows Media Player when playing dvds?

Answer»

a new problem has started. When I put a DVD in either of my drives, using Windows Media Player, they play, but there is no volume. I can play songs that I have stored in my computer in WMP and the volume is fine. Also any video I have stored plays ok. It's just the volume from physical dvds that's missing. I can play the dvd's in other players (i.e., VLC player) and they play and sound just fine. It's obviously a prob with WMP....
Am running windows xp/sp2 Using WMP version 10. tried updating to version 11 (which I don't like) and problem still existed, so I rolled back to version 10.
Only thing I can think that has changed is that I updated directx, due to installing a game a couple of weeks ago.
Any idea?
i have volume problems on my computer a lot too, did you check all the levels from the volume control?I've checked every thing. I have volume when playing music files, and volume on games, etc, using i.m. progs, etc.....I just don't have volumen when playing a dvd in either drive.Did you install any new SOFTWARE recently?
MAYBE some codecs got corrupted.I think you're right on about the codecs. And yes, I did install a new game, about 2 weeks ago. Call of Duty (and it's partner) Call of Duty United OFFENSIVE. I have been doing research about codecs, but am lost.
Any idea how to further figure this out? Should I try uninstalling the game (which is huge)?
thanks............Try to install couple of packs of codecs. It won't hurt.

For more information, view the information at the Microsoft web site.
But I did download and install the second one. Now, I'll have to give THINGS a try and see if it makes a difference. Thanks for the tips....much appreciated.DLoad and install VLC Media player....if it works that means its not the sound card and codecs are the issue...Payback time, patio....LOL

Solve : Audio Freezes my Computer!!?

Answer»

Computer Specs:

Asus Tek. VT8366 AMD Athlon XP
1.8 ghz processor / 512 DDR ram
On board sound card (CMEDIA CMI8738)
9200 ATI Radeon Video Card (256)

My problem is this..

I recently had to reformat my computer. Fresh Windows XP, drivers, all drivers are updated. My computer started randomly freezing on me. So i replaced my memory. Same thing, So i started isolating the problem. I found out that if I have something with Sound /Audio running, it freezes almost 100% of the time. To test it, I played a game with the audio ON, it froze 3 TIMES in 10 minutes. So I disabled my Sound card, played the SAME game this time audio was OFF. I played for almost 3 hours straight not 1 single Freeze up. To be sure i enabled my sound card. Froze again in about 10 minutes. (Note: It also freezes during any and all music / video i play. Windows Media Player / Itunes both freeze the computer while playing)

Now is there something i can do to fix this. Do i just need to get an external Sound Card. Is it have to do with ANYTHING conflicting with another piece of hardware?

Cant figure it out. Please Help!Have you installed all updates for XP?
Did you install a different (newer) sound driver when you reinstalled XP? If yes then try going back to an older version. (Newer isn't always better).Yes i have all updates from Windows XP, and I have the Audio Driver from the motherboard disk. Nothing from on line. Just like normal. Only this time its freezing my computer. I just need to know if its salvageable or if i need to go buy another one.

Thanks ahead of time = )Then I would try a newer driver if possible.

If the sound was fine then I'd install the other drivers one at a time testing the sound after each install. Then I would update XP and test the sound again.

If the soundcard on the other still made XP freeze while nothing but the soundcard driver was installed, I would feel fairly confident the problem was the soundcard and go buy a new one. ok ill give it a try. Thanks

Solve : iTunes *censored*!?

I was TRYING to add MUSIC to the iTunes library, and it asked me to convert the files to AAC format.

If I ever uninstall iTunes, is there a way to convert them to WMA again?

Microsoft Windows XP

Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Intel(R) Celeron(R) M Processor

Thanx!!FOUND it. Sorry!Regardless of what format they are in if they are still on your HDD they can be converted at a later date to whatever you want...You don't have to convert your music files to AAC format. On the itunes PAGE, under "Edit"--->"preferences"--->"advanced"--->"importing", you can SPECIFY that you want mp3 format, and can even customize as to bit rate.

If you already have files in AAC, there is a great little free program from NCH Software, called "Switch", which can convert many formats.

We don't know what kind of speed your connection is capable of, until you tell us.

Don't forget to consider the speed capability of to whom you are connected.
The easy way to eliminate that as a possibility while you are testing your setup is to use a known, good, fast, .... very very fast, torrent.
You don't have to download the whole file - just enough to let you know everything is set up correctly. Then you can delete the downloaded data.

Go here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10
and grab a torrent like this:
ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso.torrent 18-Oct-2007 08:32

and here:
http://borft.student.utwente.nl/~adrian/bt.php
and get:
OOo_2.3.1_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe

Both of these torrents have hundreds of seeders, and will quickly go to your max download speed. Makes them very good for testing your set up.

You might also consider utorrent.
http://www.utorrent.com
Works well, and there is no "install". Just put the .exe in a dir and run it.

And... they have forums right there at that site. If you have problems, you can search those forums and likely somebody else will have already had the same problem, and the solution will be posted too.

Oh... O_o You have to have lots of seeders to be able to download fast? I guess that's my problem. Is there anyway to get a faster download with low file health? (now I know what that means -__-) What's the point of this utorrent?
Btw: my download speed is 2024kb/s... wow that's good, I'm so dumb I don't deserve it. :PP I should have payed attention to the file health; it is 2/5... but you'd think it wouldn't be as slow as friggin .1, that's a mystery. Is that speed in kilobits or kilobytes?Great, now I have a different problem. Oh I forgot to mention, I'm using BitComet now, so those don't apply.omfg, I'm having a h**l of a time... o_O Now I switched over to bitTorrent... and it uploads fine... except I have a question... the file is 300mb... but it UPLOADED 2GB and is still uploading. How do I know when it's done? Or is it supposed to be done? -_-

geez I just wish I could download normally without using a torrent.Ok a little information on bittorrent protocol..

Once upon a time some bloke figured it would be cool if there was a way of organising a massive file sharing networks. With a wave of The Creator's hand, .torrent files were born, with another wave of said hand, He created TRACKERS to keep track of who was using the torrent files and connect them all together.

Thus, when you open a .torrent with a bittorrent program, you become a 'leecher' (One Who Downloads). The data contained in the .torrent is sent to you by other people known as 'seeders' (One Who Uploads)

The reason your download took a while before it started is because you had to wait for a seeder to start sending it. The reason you've uploaded 2gb is because you have *gasp* transcended leecher status and become one of the Mighty seeders. It's 2gb and COUNTING because you have been uploading bits of that 300mb file to possibly several hundred different people.

As far as bittorrent programs go, I would suggest Azureus, it's very cool and user friendly.

Hail Bittorrent

Solve : reinstall from program files?

Answer»

Ok basic situation, every now and then for various reasons I have to get a new hard drive or some such thing that leaves me with an old drive full of program files, and a new almost empty drive running my OS (windows XP).

Usually I can just copy from the program files folder and use the program as normal with shortcuts on my desktop (seriously who ever actually uses the start bar haha)

But with one program which would TAKE too LONG to reacquire, it doesn't work, is there some application or some way of editing the registry or something that will allow me to get the program to be recognized as an installed program? No not really.
During the installation, the installer can add any number of entries to the registry. There is really no way of knowing what entries the software MIGHT require to run.
Except of course by monitoring what entries are added during the installation.
An installer might also have added files to other folders than the main program folder. For example to the windows folder.

I think you should count yourself lucky you've not run into this problem before. Always keep the installer disc/file handy. There are very few PROGRAMS that can simply be copied to another drive and run properly...this is by design.

Looks to me like you need to start investing in the programs you need/use regularly...they come with CD's just for this kind of situation.

Solve : How to make this problem read this at here??

Answer»

I just brought a new COMPAQ IPAQ Pocket Pc and they sya tell US to TAPS the screen. And i just click it and the thing never move so how to solve the problem? How to? HP bought Compaq in 2002. Since then, all iPAQs have carried the HP logo. If you bought an iPAQ with the Compaq label, it's at least 5 years old.

Where did you purchase this device? What's the model of the device?

If the screen isn't RESPONDING to taps, I'd take it back to where you got it. You could try a hard reset, which will blank the system and restore it to factory defaults, but that probably won't solve your problem.

Solve : software to detect brand and size of my hdd?

I don't WANT to waste my time to opening the computer casing since there are lot of pc here, so any help will be appreciate. The easiest way IMO is to Open Device Manager.
Select "Disk drives".
note the name of the drive(s) listed there.
Google the name.

This should usually tell you what drive you've got.

Everest should be able to tell you the name of the drive as well.
In Everest select Storage and select ATA.
Select the drive you want INFO about and scroll down to where it says "ATA Device Physical Info".To add to Deerparks' suggestion, boot into the BIOS and you'll find the make of the hard drive there as well.

Alan <>< You could try Belarc Advisor...it will show everything on your computer.

ERROR: Could not load C:\program files\comodo\firewall\cfpres.dll. Please check if application installation folder has this file. Aborting application.

Anyone know what the problem is?

I use Windows XP SP2.

Thank you.Oh, and because of this problem, I cannot reinstall.Do you have the latest version of CFP installed?
Do you by any chance have Avast installed? There are some people who report issues with CFP when Avast is installed.I have the latest version of CFP installed. I don't use Avast! You say you can't reinstall... can you uninstall?
If you can I would suggest you do that, delete the Comodo folder if the uninstaller doesn't do it for you, CLEAN up any temp files and REGISTRY keys with CCleaner and try to install again. While searching through the Comodo forums, I FOUND the solution.
Right now Defense+ is learning, so that's a good sign that it is working.

Anyway, thank you for your reply.Great you got it working again.
Could you post the solution here or at least link it? You never know when someone with the same problem comes along.OK, here is the link:

I uninstalled the original R&R and downloaded tvtrnr4v_117en.exe. Unfortunately, after going through the long installation PROCESS I received the following message:

Error 1304: Error writing to file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo\Logger\logman.exe. Verify that you have access to that directory

When I looked at the Logger directory I found that it was APPARENTLY empty.

Any suggestions??? (I have spent all MORNING on this and am getting sore eyes)

* Error 25013: Error obtaining the Rescue and Environment drive letter and

Error 25012: Error accessing the Rescue and Recovery service partition

As I have uninstalled the original Rescue and Recovery these error messages no LONGER apply

Solve : unable to access a program saved on an external hard drive..exe links not valid?

Answer»

Ok this is what has happened.. I had unplugged my external hard drive from the computer via USB for some unknown reason. When I plugged it back in it changed it's drive designation from J:/ to K:/.
THe biggest problem this has caused me so far is the inability to access the zune software program. The reference is to look in j:drive - which is now on mycomputer as removable disk j:

I have tried to delete the zune software from add-remove programs with no success.

how do I tell the computer to look for k: instead of j: when accessing this program or how do I remove it ...

I am considering copying FILS from hard drive k: to flsah drive or memory card j: and then trying to delete program for reinstall to K:

Can any one explain why it moved designation? I have a hunch : I had plugged in a digital camera which accesssed j: while Hard drive was unplugged...when I plugged it back in it had no home?? so became a k:??Welcome to the CH forums.

Goto Device Manager>View and click on Show Hidden Devices. Search for your camera and external hdd and UNINSTALL them. (the hdd should be listed under Disk Drives, not sure where the camera will appear). Then replug your hdd and reboot, if necessary re-install a driver.

If Show Hidden Devices is not an OPTION in Device Manager>View then Right click My Computer and click PROPERTIES. From the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.

Under System Variables, click the New button. Type devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices for the Variable Name.

Under Variable Value, type "1″ and click OK. Click OK twice more to apply the changes and exit the System Properties dialog BOX.

Open Device Manager again and from the View menu, click Show Hidden Devices.

Good luck - please post back with your result, good or bad.

Solve : AVG Error Message??

Answer»

AVG free antivirus runs a scan each day. Since I started using Online Armor free firewall I get a message in the AVG RESULTS so I am guessing this is connected?

"Reading Error"
"Kernal32.dll"
"User32.dll"
"ntoskrnl.exe"

"Hosts change"

Is any of the above of importance as I have no idea what it means? AVG does finish the scan and say "No threat found" Thanks for any INFO on the above.

I have:
WIN XP Pro
AVG anti virus
AVG anti Root Kill
AVG Anti spyware
A Squared
AdAware
Spyware Blaster
Spyware Guard
RemoveIt
ThreatFire
Win Patrol
Online Armor free firewall
FireFox
Thunderbird

Looks like your firewall isn't allowing access to those files since they're protected. You'll need to configure your firewall so it will know AVG is a TRUSTED program, or just IGNORE the error.

Um... on a side note... why so many protection programs? It's not really necessary to have so many. You should allow the access in the firewall....AVG writes to those files on each scan and this is perfectly normal behaviour. Thanks for the information. I have looked through the settings for the firewall, but as I cannot see that it is blocking AVG, but will go through it again.

Solve : Recovery file for MS word corrupted?

Answer»

Hi,
I'm running a new Vista machine using the old MS Office XP, and while trying to save an old MS Word document (typed in Office XP) an error message popped up saying that something was unable to communicated with the source, and after retrying a couple times I hit "cancel" and Word started to save a RECOVERY file and then quit.

When I LOOKED back in the drive that had the original word document (.doc) it was no longer there. I found the recovered file as a .txt in my C drive (users/documents), but when I opened it using NOTEPAD it was 50 pages of "?" marks. When I changed the extension to a .doc file the same 50 pages came up with the same "?" marks. I've tried various recovery software and TRICKS from Microsoft to no avail.

The file is pretty important and losing it has been hard for me. Any help WOULD be appreciated...
Gratefully yours

Solve : Help with MS Outlook 2003?

Answer»

Hi,
Outlook had suddenly decided that it doesn't want to process my emails automatically.
It's processing HEADERS, (so i can see that i have received incoming mail) but when i click to read it it won't let me.
I then have to manually go to "send and receive"-> "Mark to Download" then send and receive again.
Anyone know why?
I've never had to do this before yesterday.
How can i get it to process the entire mail automatically again.

BTW, i've tried
"send and receive SETTINGS"

Solve : Stop downloading you piece of s**t?

Answer»

While uTorrent was running on my computer, I noticed I keep getting HTTP gateway timeout issues in Opera. I checked the modem lights and they where flashing, which means an application is downloading/uploading data. When I exit uTorrent and choose "Repair" in the connection status dialog, the flashing stops, and I don't receive any more "HTTP gateway timed out" messages. But uTorrent doesn't look like it is downloading anything, but when it is running, I can't CONNECT or the connection becomes EXTREMELY slow.

Anyone have a solution? (Or at least a temporary solution?)

I use Windows XP SP2 Home Edition.

Thank you in advance. Woops... Didn't notice that this was the Computer Hardware board.Woops, didn't realize that Utorrent was downloading illegal software. While you might not be downloading anything, you might be uploading. Have you checked that?Quote from: quaxo on December 23, 2007, 10:48:14 PM

Yes I did check that. No it is not uploading. All items are Finished. I deleted all torrents and uTorrent is still doing something ONLINE.

Woops, didn't realize that Utorrent was downloading illegal software.

I don't download illegal software. I use to download keygens, but not anymore. Nopers. Not after I had that virus infection.you are most likely receiving a DoS attack. µtorrent is a great program, but the issue i have with it is the fact that i found out your IP gets broadcasted to everyone else connected to that torrent. i am connected to the internet via a router, a router that creates logs of connections and of attacks, and everytime i use µtorrent, i get attacked. now its not that big of a deal for me because my router recognizes it as an attack and simply drops the packet(s), but to someone without a router or software firewall to protect them, it could be potentially dangerous. It may be a DoS attack but it doesn't have to be malicious or even intentional. When you use a p2p program like uTorrent you open a LOT of connections to other computers. All these other computers will also send messages back to you. They might want to request part of a file from you, tell your client that it can start downloading, check if you're still online, and so on. All these connections can potentially overwhelm your connection, creating an unintentional DoS.

Try lowering the number of connections uTorrent can make. There should be a setting for this somewhere in the client. A lower number of connections doesn't necessarily mean slower downloads either. If your connection was getting drowned by connection attempts before, lowering the amount ALLOWED may actually benefit your download speed.Thank you.

Limiting the connections now...Well, that didn't work.
But I don't really use uTorrent anymore, so I have being thinking of uninstalling it.

Thanks anyway.buy a router, seriously. i have about 50+ logged attacks on my NETWORK within 2 days, all of which were dropped by my router and thus totally ineffective.Thank you Homer.

Solve : Torrent Trouble?

Answer»

I'm trying to download a program using Azureus, but I'm having problems. I started DOWNLOADING and it got to 0.1% completed, then just stopped. I'm new to Torrents and have no idea what I am doing. I'm using Windows XP.

I just noticed that it says I might have a NAT problem if the little smiley face is always yellow, which it is. How could I fix that?

Sorry for not noticing that the FIRST time, Thanks in advance. In ORDER to for you to be able to completely download a file there need to be seeders on the torrent. Seeders are people who are sharing the complete file. If a torrent have no seeders it is not likely to ever complete. There is a COLUMN called seeders (or something to that effect) in Azureus that SHOWS the number of clients seeding each torrent.

Solve : ad pop ups nightmare?

Answer»

First, it's great to have help like this.

My problem started when I opened up a Myspace page in October. It's been Phish, adware, spyware etc etc *censored* ever since.

I've used Virus Locker, WinAnitVirus, AntispyGolden 5.1, I also bought a Symantec program for 70 bucks and I couldn't open any links without having the action stopped, so I disabled that pain. I use Drive Cleaner every single day. Ive uninstalled everything except Virus Locker and Drive Cleaner.

I heard today on a radio program about Cyber Defender and so I bought the basic for $19.99. I guess it's working as it found a virus the others did not detect, but I still get Ad pop ups up the kazoo in 30 minutes time.

One more problem- within the past 2 weeks, I cannot listen to Myspace, YouTube etc music, but I can put in a CD and listen just fine.

I have a Sony Vaio with Windows XP Home Edition roughly 2+ years old.

thanks,

Solve : 2 protection programs...?

Answer»

I was wondering if anyone knew about these two programs?

a-squared Anti-Malware 3.5

Is it compatible with Windows Vista x64 ?

Mamutu 1.7

Is it compatible with Windows Vista x64 ?

If both are compatible with Vista x64, what one would you best suggest to use?Mamutu is a monitoring program...in other words it's not a scanner but a monitor that let's you know if something fishy may be happening...
aSquared is a malware scanning program that's effective tracking down Trojans Adware and SPYWARE...they've recently added a rootkit scanner but don't quote me on this.
This would mean you still need a dedicated Anti-Virus program for your machine.
AVG and Avast are both Free and do a great job.
As far as Vista compatibility CHECK aSquared's website...I did but the problem is it SAYS for both if I didn't read it wrong that they are compatible with Vista, but not x64 and that's what I have. Now some say that they do run on Vista x64, but the question is do I want to download and try to run it anyways? I like the sounds of the the a-sqaured program better but I don't want to chance it and run it with a year subscription.
I see nothing on there site that SUGGESTS compatibility with Vista MUCH less Vista X64...
In most cases anything written for a 64Bit OS will brag about it so loud you cannot miss it so i don't think this is the case here...

Post back if you need protection advice for your 64BitVista machine and i'm sure you will wind up with some pretty good suggestions.
