Solve : Wiped my hard drive with Killdisk?

Answer»

And now I have another problem. It seems after completely erasing your hard drive on an old computer you're wanting to sell, certain things need to be done in order to reload an OS. To complicate matters, I accidentally unplugged my floppy drive and now after re-plugging it, it shows fail on reboot. The reason for the un plug was, I have two cd drives, one a DVD burner and the original CD drive that had quit working. I THOUGHT by unplugging the defunct one, the computer would only see the one that was plugged in. I accidentally unplugged the floppy and now upon booting even after hooking it back up I get a floppy drive failure 40 message. What to do? Quote from: The Bubba on September 26, 2010, 12:59:52 PM

...I accidentally unplugged the floppy and now upon booting even after hooking it back up I get a floppy drive failure 40 message. What to do?
You've hooked it up wrong, look again.I thought the same thing and have hooked it up as many ways as possible meaning reversing the way it's plugged in etc. I've used the original plug, the alternative plug at the end of the RIBBON and nothing works. I'm not saying I'm not doing something wrong but I can't seem to get it right.I've googled this a couple of times and evidently my floppy has bit the dust. If you've got the ribbon connector on wrong, the light on the floppy will stay on after the computer is booted. If it's connected right it should flash at leasr once when booting. It's staying on continuous when connected a certain way but not flashing when reversed? I guess I'll try and make a CD boot disc. Just thought I'd throw this out there for others to read. It's AMAZING what a time killer a person can get into sometimes trying to do something that should be FAIRLY simple.

Solve : I have no visual?

Answer»

I don't have MUCH to go on but, this is what my friend is saying he has 256 memory win xp dell computer, mother board has no video CARD, it is built in. He turns on computer and has no screen.
Do you think he would need a new board ? Or can anyone suggest some thing to do to determine what could be the problem Check this monitor on another computer, or different monitor on this computer.Do the fans and hard drive SPIN when the computer is powered up? In other words, does the computer make any noise? If not, it could be the PSU. Else, it might just be the monitor. As Broni SAYS, try SWITCHING the monitor and see what happens.

Solve : PC wont turn on. Maybe bad MOBO??

Answer»

Hey guys,
Newbe here..I am having some issues with my computer and I can realy use the help of someone more knowledgable than me.
I built the pc myself about 1.5 years ago, never realy had any major issues with it until now.

Its a Vista 64x operating system.
ASUS MOBO..I cant find what model it is
AMD Athlon x2 processor @ 2700gzh

I used whatever power supply came with the case, which was either 450 or 500 watts.

So this morning I know the power in the house went out for a second, and then turned back on. I dont know if we had a power surge or if someone in my house manually flipped the breaker on and off. My computer was hibernating at the time and when it happened I did hear the MOBO beep.

So if I try to turn the computer on I dont hear the MOBO beep at all. The power supply and the CPU fans go on, and I can hear the hard drives spinning, I cant get any signal going to my monitors. I have tryed it with two different monitors.

The light for the MOBO is still lit.

I tryed different connections to the monitors, hdmi, vga and DVI which is what I normally use. The monitors still dont get any signal regardless of what cable I use.

Just trying to diagnose if the graphics went out on the MOBO, I LOOKED in my drawer and found my old graphics card. Its a ASUS EAH4670 external graphics card that I used to use before but had to STOP because it would go out after a few minutes..I installed it, restarted the computer, and still no signal to any of the monitors.

what do you guys THINK I should check? I cant get into the BIOS settings because of the no signal being displayed on the monitors..

Try another PSU.Does your MONITOR work?? sounds like more of a video card problem than your motherboard... check and make sure your monitor WORKS by connecting it another computer if you have one.A friend of mine had a problem similar to this after a storm. Her computer made a noise and shut off after a power surge, and for two weeks she waited for me to get over there to try and look it over. She said she could not get the computer to turn on, and was afraid it was fried. Actually all I did was unplug the power cord from the back of the computer to the power supply for about 30 seconds, plugged it back in, and everything worked. Hopefully it's something simple.

Otherwise I would try a new power supply, and testing a basic configuration of just the video card and one stick of ram to see if you can at least get a display on it. They say on a decent computer, the power supply would fry before the motherboard as a safety feature.Another quick thing you can try.....unplug the PSU from the wall...
Toggle the on/off switch (not the 110/220 switch) a few times...
Plug back into the wall and give it a try...

There doesn;t seem to be any rhyme or reason to when it will happen.

Solve : Computer wont display anything at all?

Answer»

My computer runs on XP starts up and im using a brand new power supply but the MONITOR will not diplay anything. I've tried several monitors and it still give me the same result. What can i do and what is the cause? Do you have a dedicated graphics card? Could be a fault with that.

I assume that when you power on your computer, the fans and hard-drive start-up okay? (Since you say you have a new PSU so I doubt it's that)When your computer is starting up (before windows loads) do you see anything on the screen at all?

Do you hear any beeps when your computer starts up?

Did you have this PROBLEM before you INSTALLED the new power supply?

Solve : Right graphics card?

Answer»

Can anyone help me find the right graphics card for my pc?
I have a HP Compaq dx2400 microtower.

I need a graphics card that has atleast 256mb 2.0 vertex shader and pixel shader and also hardware TnL
Sorry i meant HP Compaq Dx2420 MicroTower. If the information I've found is correct and that computer is still unmodified from the original specs, it should have the following free slots:

1 x PCI - full-height
2 x PCI Express x1 - full-height
1 x PCI Express x16 - full-height

The PCI and PCI Express x16 slots should both be ABLE to take a video card. For better performance, get a PCI Express card. Some cards require that the power supply provide power directly to the card, so you will need to check that your power supply has the appropriate connector or that the card comes with an adapter (most do).

Any kind of budget on this?first of all THANKS for the reply, and AROUND £50, the computer is unmodified and i need the graphics card for gaming like the witcher, gothic 3 mabye crysis or not.Check the position of your PCI Express 16x slot on your motherboard, make sure that there is sufficient space around it to put a card in and that there is nothing in the slot next to it.

Pretty MUCH any of the cards listed on this page. You might call HP support at 1-800-474-6836 to verify with them that the card is compatible, as I can't find anything more specific about the slot in that board other than it's a PCI Express 16x slot, but not if it's 1.0, 2.0, or 2.1. The list of cards I've POSTED is for 2.0 cards.

Solve : PC does not switch ON?

Answer»

I have a i3, 4 gb ram, GTS250x Graphic card.

I was working on my PC, and then suddenly the Monitor screen went blank.
I checked the wire and the everything, the PC was still running.
I tried to restart the pc but made no difference. I attached the monitor on to a different PC, there it worked.
So i removed the graphic card and attached the monitor cable to the On board Video out. There it worked for a while and then again the monitor switched off.
So i opened the case and checked, the fans were rotating for a few SECONDS and going off. again rotating for a few seconds and going off. This it keeps on doing till of switch off from the mains.

PLease help
You have removed the dedicated graphics card and used the onboard videocard to check on the blankscreen issue to no avail...? Shutdowns and won't switch on. Check you CMOS battery and replace it. What activities were you doing when this happen? Remove other external devices hooked including OPTICAL drives from PSU(PIN connectors). Check RAM modules, if you have 2 RAMs Reboot with only one RAM inserted and check if the either is not faulty. Worst case, mobo. Ignore the previous post. He OBVIOUSLY didn't read or misunderstood your post. Don't pull your CMOS battery or your RAM or anything. It most likely isn't your motherboard either.

If the fans are coming off and on, it's probably a problem with the power supply. If you have access to another power supply, try swapping it out and see if that doesn't solve the problem.

Solve : Wireless N vs N dual band, Netgear vs Linksys, and other WiFi hardware questions?

Answer»

My job has me living temporarily at a hotel with several hotels and TRUCK stops in close proximity, most of which have WiFi systems (My WiFi adapter has identified 9+ channels with excellent signal strength). I recently bought an expensive business notebook PC (in my "specs") that I'd LIKE to keep virus/security clean. I only have wireless experience with the 802.11g router, print server and adapters that I installed at my house. I have no experience with public hot-spot access.
My first question is which adapter is best: Netgear N600 or Cisco Linksys AE1000? (both dual band wireless-N)
The reason I ask is because I first bought a Netgear N300 (wireless-N single band) adapter from Best BUY which worked fine, but then I saw a Linksys AE1000 Dual band adapter at WalMart for less $ than I paid for the N300. AND WalMart also has a Netgear N600 dual band wireless-N adapter for less $ than I paid for the N300 at Best Buy. So I bought the LinksysAE1000 today at WalMart but it is recieving signals from less WiFi channels than the Netgear N300 single band was. I'm THINKING I may take the Linksys AE1000 back and exchange it for the Netgear N600.
What should I do here?
Also, my Comodo firewall has alerted me of several attempts to connect to my PC from other PC's. I have ticked "DENY ACCESS" for all attempts reported and everything is fine so far. I just wanted to request some suggestions/directions from some of you here that know more about wireless security than I probably ever will.
Thanks,
Mike

This comment will NOT address your security concerns but will provide an alternative to your WI-FI signal strength aspect. I have just ordered this device and am awaiting delivery this week. I researched it extremely thoroughly before PLACING my order. I only saw one negative feedback on it and that was related to an "Apple" application. I am not in a position to comment on it from a personal use aspect yet.

P.S. In spite of a very determined effort to find a bricks and mortar retail point of purchase i was not successful and opted to order it from Amazon.com on-line. If your getting excellent signal strength from 9 channels in your hotel room, you really don't need an external antenna.

External antennas are really only for low or no signal problems. My suggestion was based on what the O/P stated about the actual end product he BOUGHT ="So I bought the LinksysAE1000 today at WalMart but it is recieving signals from less WiFi channels than the Netgear N300 single band was."

I do have a lower signal strength with this linksys AE1000 dual band than I did with the Netgear N300 single band that I returned to Best Buy (money back). But why?
I agree an antenna is not what I need. The USB Wi Fire device that truenorth linked to is intended to be used in conjunction with an Internal Wi Fi adapter anyway,

Quote
The Wi-Fire is a compact, range-extending USB device that enables you to access a wireless Internet connection from up to 1,000 feet away–three times the range of your internal wireless adapter.

The wireless adapters in question here are USB. (external).

Solve : RAM -v- Compaq. Not reporting correctly????

Answer»

I've searched all the topics reasonable, nothing found like this... Got a Compaq EVO D510c. 2.4 g. Pen_IV. w/2 (1g) sticks of DDR2100 (non-ECC) RAM - but PC it is reading and reports only 1.5 gigs on board???

(oem manual specs D510c will take 2 gigs). Have chked. BIOS & run tests and the 1.5 gigs reported looks to be accurate. What brought this issue up now is some video processing I'm having to do that is pretty resource greedy and the machine is complaining about anemic 'memory'. Not to have launched a research study --- I have done a little research on the PC & RAM i'm using and nothing like "proprietary" type MEM. warnings have COME up.

I've tried Compaq support for their input but since the HP takeover; Compaq's (once) A#1 rated tech support has sort'a been pushed to the back row I guess.

The problem was never a "come-n-go" thing. It is consistent.

A problem this steady is usually part of a pattern that generates "known issues" tech reports - does anybody know of any?

I'd sure like to get all the RAM logged on this machine that it can see (and use) - unless it was a oem M.board design FUBAR.

Thanks, Gerry

According to CPU-Z, the first module is 512MB, not 1GB. the problem could be related to the fact that they are different manufacturers and also different timings altogether. Thanks to the group: BC_Programmer - Computer_Commando - 2x3i5x. When I squinted and looked at the test report and saw the "512" I was floored (the stick has a oem label on it - 1GB DDR 2100) I don't know somehow maybe a wrong label was put on it. All I had to check it by was the computer.

Don't even remember where it was bought now!

The smack-down killer here was the little CPU-z utility. How do you find these gem anyway. I've not heard of it.

Anyway, thank you - all of you, much-in-a-half, again. SETTLED & Solved - another happy ending.

Gerry Sorry you got burned on that stik of RAM...

Patio I dont think that you would be able to find it

The 7th ring of *censored*?

Don't worry, instructions are pretty easy; you take the interstate to the middle of the nevada desert and then turn off on a road that's not on any map, and is listed as "dusty abode". At the end you will find an old house full of CRICKETS. Press a switch in the basement (can't miss it) and a magical teleport will appear. This teleport will take you to purgatory. Now, you'll need to find a huge vat; it's filled with unbaptized babies. You'll need to get to the bottom and press yet another switch (WHO DESIGNS THESE THINGS) in order to open the first portal to *censored*. When travelling through *censored* portals, there are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Always keep your arms and legs inside the teleporter during transport. Unless you don't want said limb, in which case teleporting can make a RATHER clean cut and also cauterizes the wound.

2. Leave the landing pad as soon as possible. You don't want to be on the pad when the next person arrives.

3. The machine only takes 5 dollar american bills. If you need change, There is a bank nearby (the 1st bank of purgatory, which is so-so as far as banks go)

anyway, once you take the first portal, it will take you down to the 2nd ring of *censored*. Just go straight until the intersection with the giant torso as a traffic LIGHT, take a right there, and then take a left when you get to the road with a little imp on the corner. (Careful, he THROWS fireballs, but thankfully he hasn't mastered basic ballistics).

Actually, the worst part about the city of helltown is that they have awful postal service. After all, the postal workers they have were the worst of the worst that we had up here. This is pretty much what happens when a package takes ages to get to you; it got tied up in *censored*. bloody bureaucracy, too. Since of course they have the worst of the worst of politicians as well.

BTW sorry for my last post. peace sir.Your chances of access or recovery of the DATA on the flash drive are probably not good.
1.Does your computer recognize the presence of the flash drive?
2.have you tried the flash drive in ALL the usb ports on your computer?
3.If you can i would recommend that you return the flash drive to the computer where it was (your friends i presume) and see if the contents can be accessed there.
If they can then make a backup copy on that computer and then copy them to some other removable media and bring them to your computer. If they are not ACCESSIBLE on the original computer then they are most likely lost. It may also be that the data is in a file format that is not currently readable by your computer. Solve : Keyboard not working as it should?

Answer»

Windows XP SP3
Have had a complete rebuild done (at a shop here in France) due to everything being lost. When l got it back, l just don't know what they've done. It's a cross between mainly English with some French bits thrown in just to confuse matters, and it's TAKING me ages to sort out bringing it back to how it once was.
Now how can a little old logitec qwerty keyboard be so *censored* annoying? It seems that a couple of keys are swapped around and one isn't working at all. Being nearly brain dead, l can't fathom it out after all of this.
The numeric 2 and open quotes key - the open quotes is now the @ sign.
The apostrophe and @ key - the @ sign is now the open quotes sign.
The numeric 3 and english pound sign - the pound sign is now a HASH sign.
I used to press ctl+alt+number 4 key to get the euro sign - now nothing happens at all.
Via control panel, the keyboard is stated as a standard 101/102 and the regional language is set to English (uk).
What am l missing here?
1) No IDEA what a "complete rebuild" is.
2) Since you apparently paid someone to "fix" your system, I'd suggest taking it back to them. Thanks Allan,
Lost external hdd, so all backups gone.
Now have a new motherboard, new processor, and new SATA hdd's. They had to copy the info from my old ide hdd to the new sata drive, but of course had to install Windows first and as l only had the upgrade disk, that's where the problems started.
I've nearly got back everything to how it was, but l've got a big head with IE8 and also this keyboard. Just wodered whether anyone had any ideas as to why the keys weren't working as they should.
Finally fixed it after trial and error and a bit of good luck.
It wanted setting up as english EXTENDED and not just english.
Thanks anyway.

LOL Master and slave are only for IDE controllers. The device plugged into the top of the gray ribbon is master, and the device plugged into the middle plug-in is slave. Performance-wise it does not matter, but just make sure that if you plug a device into the middle plug-in of the gray cable, the jumpter is set to slave.

Or you could just set all of your jumpers to cable-select and it won't matter Quote from: joji on October 07, 2010, 04:31:43 PM

Solve : pc won't turn on and power supply makes faint clicking sound?

Answer»

I've been working on computers for many years and have come across something that ive never seen before. I have a hp media center pc m7067c that does not turn on and the power supply makes a faint clicking sound every second. When i unhook the ps from the mb the sound goes away. I know the ps works cause ive used it in another pc. All the drives power up in another pc and I have PUT in a new mainboard and still have the same issue. Any help WOULD greatly be appreciated!!Given that you are SURE the sound is emanating from the power supply find a dark location (at night with no lights on in the room) and observe the power supply for a brief flashing blueish LIGHT. If detected it is most likely a short arcing in the PS. Another alternative might be a bearing starting to fail on the PSU fan. truenorthBorrow a known good PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there...Thanks for your responses, I know the power supply is good, if use another power supply it does the same thing, faint clicking sound and the little green led on the back of the power supply flickers with the power supply. I guess what i'm asking is has anybody out there had this issue before? I have unhooked everything from the board except for the cpu and when i plug the cord into the power supply I get the clicking sound. No lights, led's or anything just the clicking. I have not had this particular occurrence. However the more i think of it the more it seems like a cycling attempt at powering up something that fails on a regular recurring frequency. What you then may be hearing is that "switch" cycling. It seems that the issue is being created by something (other than the PSU) within that particular case. Given the stripped down state you created it sure sounds as if it is either MOBO or CPU related. Does the power supply fan run during this occurrence at all ? truenorth A "faint" clicking sound can also be the sign of a failing drive...

Also I am looking for at least a 512mb video card.
Any help would be great thanks!!Your comp comes with a 300 watt PSU by default. If you have not upgraded it, then you probably won't be able to get a great graphics card. There are, however, some DECENT low power graphics cards that you could get.

These are all the fastest cards with no extra power req:

Nvidia GeForce GT 210 through 240
Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT through 9600 GSO
Radeon HD 5550 through 5670

You can find all these on newegg.comThank you for your help. I think I will stop by bestbuy and get EVGA - GeForce 210 512MB DDR2 PCI Express Graphics Card. $40 dollars doesn't seem to bad for it imo.

Solve : Graphic Tablets *sigh*?

Okkk, so I wanna get one. Preferably cheap, big like a 6x8 (10"x10") XD
Less than $125 / £80
I've searched but it seems impossible! D:
I've see the bamboo pen but it's too small. I need something which will be recognized by quite a few popular softwares e.g. Photoshop, Flash, 3dMax

Muchas Gracias! Here is an inexpensive tablet I just notices on Anandtech’s Hot Deals forum.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2106585

I don’t know any more about it than this, but I’m going to get one myself.
The company is in CALIFORNIA, but they do international shipments.
See what you think.
Hmm...it's not bad, not very popular

Most are anymore. It's cumbersome trying to draw when you pen is tied to something.

Genius makes a number of tablets in various sizes with various features:

I fail to see the big deal with that. I've been using a Genius Mousepen 8x6 tablet (which is a great tablet for its price, I must say) which uses both a battery pen and a battery mouse, and I've never had to change either of them so far. I've had this tablet for nearly 2 years by now, and I use it every day.

You probably won't find battery-less pens with cheaper graphic tablets anyway.

As for compatibility with popular software, as long as you have the PROPER drivers installed, it should WORK with just about any software, except maybe if you use veeery old versions of said software (which happened to me with Corel Photo-Paint 8, a version that is nearly 12 years old.)Quote from: spikedfox on September 23, 2010, 07:58:57 AM
Genius Mousepen 8x6

That's the exact one I have. I've had it for about 2 years as well and still use it all the time. I don't use the mouse with it, just the pen. I'm not EVEN sure what I did with the mouse... packed away somewhere.

As for compatibility, I know for sure this one is recognized by every program I have that can recognize a tablet. New versions of Photoshop recognize it even if it's plugged it after Photoshop starts, but some OLDER versions require a restart to see the tablet (Photoshop loading issue, not tablet issue).Quote from: quaxo on September 23, 2010, 08:33:35 AM

The only issue I've had with photoshop is if I'm running VLC player at the same time, photoshop stops detecting pen pressure either right away or after a certain time. Closing VLC (and using any other media player instead) solves this problem without even needing to restart photoshop. No big deal. I use photoshop CS2.Quote from: spikedfox on September 23, 2010, 10:19:11 PM

Interesting, I've never had that problem and I've usually got VLC, Winamp, or Windows Media Player running at the same time.Ohh, I like the Genius Mousepen 8x6 however. I can't seem to browse the web site with much ease. For some reason it takes minutes to load =\

Solve : Start up problems with Sony Vaio?

Answer»

Hi

I am new to this so hope someone can help...

The other day my Sony Vaio FROZE and I had to perform a shut down by pressing and holding the start button.

When I RESTARTED the laptop windows failed to start. The laptop is running REALLY slow...

It then came up with:

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause"

Start in safe mode or normal - I clicked normal and after about 30 seconds (showing the microsoft bar) it then went back to the above screen.

I then started in safe mode. It took me to the normal system screen - after ages!!

When i check for faults it comes up saying "attempting to repair disks, this may take over an hour" - I left it for 30 hrs and it still shows the same thing??

I have tried system RESTORE but it asks me to load drivers?? It cant find any drivers??

I have tried everything but it just doesnt seem to do anything....

When the laptop froze initially i had an internet usb stick attached, I think this has caused the problem but i just dont know how to get it to start up

HELP!!Have you had any issues with sporadic slow-downs or issues with boot-ups before?

To be honest this sounds like a hard drive issue (i.e. it might be failing)

The same thing happened to my Dell XPS laptop a couple of years ago - sometimes it'd go really slow and/or freeze up, then sometimes Windows wouldn't start/boot-up. Other TIMES it'd be okay. Etc.

I doubt the USB stick is the issue - just in-case though, I assume you've tried removing it and trying again? Thanks Tristan

Had absoloutely no problems in the past at all!!

Evereything has been fine....

It just wont let me do anything!

Do I need to replace hard drive? If so is it costly and easy to do?

Thanks in advance....

Solve : Faint horizontal lines on screen...?

Answer»

Hey everyone... again

I just wanted to ask about something I've been noticing with my LCD monitor. I see these faint, horizontal lines that run across the screen... they're really barely noticeable, but I know on my Windows log on screen with the blue background, I can see them pretty clearly.

I just put in a new video card a couple weeks ago. I'm not sure if the lines have been there since putting in the new video card or if they started some time after putting it in, but I know they weren't there with my old video card.

Something that I thought might be contributing to this, though - my video card doesn't have a VGA port. I had to get a DVI-VGA adapter for it so I could plug my monitor in. Do you think this could be causing the faint lines? I've checked and reseated the cable running both to the monitor and to the card, but the lines still appear.

It's really not a big deal for me - like I said, the lines are barely noticeable, but I just want to make sure that something more serious isn't going on as my luck with computers is pretty awful lol I've SEARCHED around online and can't really find anything related to this issue, so I wanted to check with you guys and see if you had any ideas, suggestions, etc

Thanks in advance for any help!

Monitor: ViewSonic Optiquest Q19wb
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5670

Oh, and my temps are and have been FINE. Right now, and while just working or surfing the Internet, CPU temps are at 28/32C. GPU at 35C. The GPU temp goes up to around 42C while playing a game, etc, which I think is normal. So I don't think any of the hardware temperatures are the culprit... but most of you know better than I do when it comes to these things, so, let me know... Have you tried changing the resolution and the REFRESH rate?

Quote

ATI Radeon HD 5670

I was planning on getting one of those, hopefully that is not the problem.
Well, the refresh rate only has one setting - 60 Hertz. As for the resolution, I let the computer set that on its own when I installed the video card, which is 1440x900. I thought it may have been the refresh rate, too, so that was the first thing I checked.

Thanks for your reply, Linux711

By the way, I don't think it's an issue with the card, so don't worry - and if it is, it's probably because of that DVI to VGA adapter I had to USE... at least that's what I'm hoping Try 1024 X 768...

Solve : Failing hard drive??

Answer»

Sorry for taking so long. After looking and asking around, I couldn't find a spare power SUPPLY to swap with MINE for testing purposes.
What I will do is wait until I have the money to build myself a brand new computer and test with the newly bought PSU before building the thing.
In case the PSU turns out not being the problem, I'd like to know if there are other thing I should look for that could be causing these issues. This will save me a lot of troubleshooting time if I know in advance what to look for next.

If the motherboard or cpu turn out to be defective (which I doubt, as they seem to be working properly according to a few tests and visual inspection), well I guess it's gonna be trashed. It's pretty useless to look around for a P4 board nowdays. I'm pretty sure it's the PSU anyway, I noticed its fan never spinning whatsoever, ALTHOUGH PSU temperatures are at a decent level, and the power button wont work powering off the machine after a crash, and will require a CERTAIN delay to power on.

Solve : Problem with printer... details enclosed?

Answer»

Hello and thanks for any help.

I'm using a Brother MFC495CW and trying to print from a windows vista LAPTOP via bluetooth or wireless. The printer is getting the signal from the computer.

It has worked in the past. I just replaced the black cartridge today. I've tried multiple CARTRIDGES so the problem is not a DEFECTIVE cartridge.

I've forced the cleaning of the printer heads more times than I can count and the three COLORS print fine in a test print but the black does not print at all. The printer RECOGNIZES a black cartridge full of ink.

Im assuming that there is a problem somewhere between the cartridge and the paper. Either the head or the line that delivers the ink but I cant find any info on accessing these parts and either cleaning or replacing them.

Thanks.

Solve : Accessing Memory Beyond 3GB?

I thought having a 64-bit operating system was the only thing required to access RAM beyond 3 GB. What am I missing here?

Thanks for any guidance...

You probably need to enable the Memory Remapping Feature in the BIOS. Try Googling for "Asus P5B 4GB enable" and you will find lots of STUFF including this in the official Asus forum

Quote
To enable BIOS to correctly identify 4Gb's of RAM, go to the BIOS settings - Advanced - Chipset - Northbridge CONFIGURATION and set Memory Remap to Enabled.

Solve : Dell 1545 Laptop Issues?

I have a Dell 1545 Laptop, when I go to power it on, everything starts running and the screen starts to come on but then it doesn't. Other times it POWERS on and RUNS like NORMAL and everything is fine. There is no rhyme or reason to how many times it will work, I don't think Windows is LOADING up properly but believe me I am not computer expert, someone please help, as for, of course my warranty expired six months AGO!More info may bring suggestions. Such as operating system, what if any hardware/software changes (if any) were made coincident to this event. What were you doing at the time this event first occurred? This type of event can be created by many factors. For instance overheating/power supply issues/battery and/or converter issues/etc.
When your "screen does not come on" is anything still powered or does the computer completely shut down? Any lights illuminated when the screen goes blank (if that is what it does)? truenorth

Agreed.
However if he were to use an app that supported network backups (for individual workstations as they do ) he'd still be only a few keystrokes away and/or could schedule regular backups for said machines without searching for a boottime solution...I would consider keeping the IMAGES for all the computers on a network drive (which Patio & ST already suggested) and a backup copy on a portable USB hard drive. Many corporate networks are structured this way.Quote from: patio on October 06, 2010, 04:52:18 PM

excellent point... somehow I missed that. All excellent points. When I first started here, 6 monthe ago, all systems where outsourced and I am the first(and only) IT staff. When a PC (135 employees) crashed they simple put in a new one and wwent through about a 2 hour setup process. Not to mention the PC's they had are crap and they replaced a PC about 3 times a day, LITERALLY. So first thing I did was make sure all the PC's were coming from the same supplier and then put in a file server specifically for user storage and then of course structured my AD accordingly. Then I DESIGNED my GENERIC clone killing the 2 hours for each PC. But with so many PC issues still in play I needed to figure out a way to get me more free time. So this is why I went this route. In January I will be buying a server strickly for imaging user PC's. But I just need to make till then. So that is why I have all the extra work. Seems like extra but for me it is actually less. I have looked at the Clonezilla and Acronis network cloning last night and I like both. I think I will toy with the Clonezilla first since it free and I still have alot to purchase here.Macrium Reflect is an excellent tool ....and IMHO far more user-friendly than CloneZilla....also Free.

Solve : Printer will not print?

Answer»

My printer will not print all seems OK up to the print out - the pages queue up but don't print.
thanks for any advice.I hate when that happens.Okay, you need to PROVIDE a lot more information than you did in your first POST. Everything you can THINK of that may be relevant. maybe this can help:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000007

works most of the timeThanks, all i got is the pages are in a queue. Have CHECKED all cables and buttons. But nothing happens. All seems to follow the process except will not print. Your definition of information and mine don't seem to be the same.

1) Did the printer ever work?
2) If so, what happened between the last time it worked and the first time it did not?
3) Does the printer work in ANY APPLICATION or does it fail no matter what you try to print?
4) What is the make and model of the printer?
5) What is the make and model of the computer? What OS are you using?
6) Is the printer selected as the default print device?
7) What steps have you taken to try to correct the problem (have you reinstalled the driver, for example)?

Like that.

Solve : PC shutdown in OL game:pc temp or hardware??

Answer»

I'm an online gamer. but in the middle of the game, my PC ALWAYS shutdown between 8am to 12nn. almost everyday. but when I'm just surfing my PC does'nt shutdown. i checked the CPU temp and its 48 degree C and system is 38. is my PC overheating? is there a problem with the game or is it my PC??/ can anyone help me??Laptop or Desktop? You must be aware that some games demand high output in every aspect of your mobo. POWER Supply, Processor,RAM Module/s, Video and Sound Card. The fans running alongside makes sure they are not overheating. Dust can also impede air FLOW and ventilation. Cleaning it will be an option. If the game you mention(w/c may be an intensive video game) shutsdown your computer, try another game of the same level. But if surfing has not made any issue, it is certain that overheat on either component could have cause the shutdown. Does your computer come straight back on (or do you need to wait - probably for it to cool down, if so - before it comes back on)? Also does it shutdown straight away, or do you notice it stutter and FREEZE, and then shut down?

Solve : Computer running very very slow.?

Have a gateway running xp 128 ram.

I'm waiting on the virus pros to take a look at my hijackthis log but have a feeling its not just a virus or not a virus at all.

My antispyware and malwarebytes runs clean. I have my STARTUP to a minimum and followed all the ccleaner instructions.

While trying to download NEW versions of spyware my tower constantly runs into virtual memory problems mean while nothing else is running and the system set VM to 2/188 which according to the pros should be enough.

Is there anything else in the meantime I could check into. One more thing when my pc is refreshing the desktop icons look like they are being PEELED from the screen very slowly then the screen refreshes.

Any suggestions are a BIG help.

128MB of RAM with Windows XP will be painfully slow. Nothing you can do except add more RAM.Its a celeron ?

In the bios it does say Slot 0 = 128 Slot 1 = empty ?

It has gotten a bit faster since I posted last I have done the following ;
1. Updated drivers
2. Cleaned house
3. Disabled microsoft firewall and alerts (big difference)
4. DOWNLOADED Firefox
5. I did some other things getting a brain fart.

Will the 128 cause the icons to sort of peel of the screen and when one screen over lays another leave the imprint of the top screen on the bottom screen for decades lol kidding but it does seem like a long time until it refreshes.

Thanks much,
MP.Celeron + 128MG RAM + XP = slow...Thanks Pat I guess i have it as good as its gonna get lol.

Solve : CPU Running too hot?

Hi,
My Intel E5300 is overheating. It mostly happens when I'm in a video chat with someone. CPU fan gets loud etc. At this point the CPU reaches a temperature of 75-85 degrees Celsius . I'm using Speed Fan to CHECK the temperatures. I don't really know what it is but ventilation and power management isn't the case. I already checked those settings in the BIOS. Is there anything else that might trigger this overheating?

I haven't been on this CH forum for a couple of months now and there have been changes. Some of then I'm still not aware of. If possible can someone tell me some of the changes?

ThanksMax temp for your CPU is listed at 74.1C, so don't do anything demanding until the problem is fixed.

Your temps are good, and you've just bought a new graphics card so try a different monitor. I have a monitor that does this when switching resolutions.

Solve : Power supply!?

Answer»

Is It safe to use a 18V 3A instead of !8V 1.9 A fo my laptop?
Thank you. Should be fine if it fits. The thing that really matters is the voltage and they are both 18V so it should be OK. The fact that it's 3A just allows it to draw more POWER if it NEEDS it.

Solve : Hard drive Won't Defrag completely?

Answer»

Quote from: rthompson80819 on September 25, 2010, 02:44:57 PM

I've been using defraggler for a while and never had a PROBLEM. I'm wondering if it is getting so far then hitting a file that has a problem, like an INFECTION.
I don't THINK "infection" files have some specific properly that differs enough for it not to be defragmentable. It's far more likely that actual disk errors (such as inconsistent directory entries) are the cause- either that, or one of Defragglers options is set so that it doesn't actually perform a full defragment.

Quote
Defraggler will list what files are not contiguous and maybe that will give you a clue.

the Contig Tool can be useful for that as well. Although it is only available through the Command Prompt.

does anyone know a good free software that i can use?? because nothing is really working...

run the CHKDSK tool, recommended about 5 times so far in this thread. One should always check a disk for errors before performing a defrag, regardless of the tool. (although I imagine some of the more inclusive programs do this as well, defraggler no doubt is not one of those)Quote from: rooskie94 on September 25, 2010, 11:02:36 AM
everytime i defrag it only gets a little bit. I use defraggler, and when i defrag it only get like 10%.. so my HDD is 40% frag, and when i defrag it drops down to 35%. so how can i get my whole HDD defragmentation

Something that worked for me in similar situations was RUNNING a full malware scan prior to the defrag and a diskcleanup (probably obviouz things you have tried out, but in case you havent, give it a try). Not sure if the windows defragger can completely defrag (system files n file fragments larger than 64MB especially if you have less than 15% free space. I use a third party tool now. You can google for trial versions and try an alternative program if nothing else works.Quote from: rooskie94 on September 25, 2010, 09:37:39 PM

Have you run chkdisk, as advised?

For a defrag program, I'll suggest Smart Defrag. This linked page has a video tutorial that explains some features of Smart Defrag.

Solve : Connecting PS2 to monitor.?

Answer»

I have an HP w2408h. I bought a RCA to HDMI adaptor to USE my PS2 with my monitor because the other INPUT is used by the computer. But, the monitor does not detect the SIGNAL for some reason. Whenever the PS2 is plugged in I get the "no input signal" message. So my question is - is there anything I can adjust in the monitor to get it to work? Some displays DEFAULT to whichever port a signal was detected on first. If your computer if off, does the PS2 output to your computer display through the other port? If you can get your PS2 on the display when computer is off, you will then need a KVM to switch between PS2 and PC for the displays focus and the display would have a single cable input from the KVM.

Before you transferred your computer to another space/place, did it has issues of shutting down or THERMAL problem(overheat)? Laptop or Desktop? If there is no power, surely there is no fans spinning. It must be that you cant see any GRAPHICS coming from the monitor... Are there any lights coming from the CPU or CD/DVD drive while fan is spinning?

Solve : SATA drive neither detected in Windows or BIOS or startup?

Answer»

Hay!

My friend's laptop had a windows file corrupt (Error message before Windows starts about HAL.DLL) so I booted up with Ubuntu to correct that but I could not see the hard drive and could not mount it. I tried booting normally again.. no drive detected, not even the error message!

So I tried to plug the hard drive on my desktop computer but it could not be detected in the BIOS and in Windows. However, during the BIOS post message, when the BIOS is trying to detect SATA hard drives, it freezes for 30 seconds on SATA3 (where it's plugged) and then it says: "Not detected", as it says with SATA2 where there is nothing plugged.

Is it dead?

Thanks all

Since you've ALREADY tried it in another system and it still can't be seen, chances are the drive is dead. If the data is important enough, there are COMPANIES out there that specialize in RECOVERING data from dead or dying drives. It's cheaper than it used to be, but still not that cheap.

Solve : RAM has gone from 2gb to 256mb after blue screen issue.?

Answer»

Here's what happened from what I can remember (I regret not writing this down in detail, what it said has quite literally flown out of my head): I suddenly had a blue screen as I was watching a football match on my COMPUTER, I thought, okay, this has happened before, although it's not a frequently occurrence, so I just rebooted as usual.

Then I got a blue screen again, and it mentioned something about my RAM, I think. That it was going to turn it off for safety? I can't remember, unfortunately. Edit: It said "Decreasing available memory" and "Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility" As I was going to try load up my computer again, I had one of those black screen's with white text as if you were going to go into safe mode, it gave me a number of options and I chose something like "start up normally" which was at the bottom, it said to choose that if you didn't know why you were being brought to that screen.

Now, I'm back on my account and my RAM is now 256mb (I checked at run > /dxdiag) and I previously had 2gb RAM before this happened (two 1gb RAM sticks that I only bought two months ago.)

I'm baffled really. Are my RAM sticks dead? The main point of this thread is that I'd like my 2gb RAM back if possible. 256mb is a NIGHTMARE!

I haven't tried anything to SOLVE it or figure out what went wrong, because I genuinely haven't a clue where to start or what to search for. This has never happened to me before.

I'm on Windows XP home edition, CPU 2.53GHz, if there's anything else you need to know, please tell me.

Thank you. Your computer might have been hit by a power spike which running which damaged the memory and caused the crash.

Your system on reboot has a memory check and detected a read / write error on one or more of the memory sticks.
It sounds like it's avoiding using them 'Decreasing available memory', rather than BECOMING unstable.

Windows Memory Diagnostic
This application from Microsoft you can download and install onto a disc, then boot the computer using it.
It will take a while but scan your computers memory to check for errors/corruption when accessed.
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

If the memory is dead, your'll have to work out which one(s) and replace with compatible RAM. Check to see if your computer's RAM is still covered under warnanty, you might simply get them replaced for free as covered by being 'faulty'. Invest in a surge protector for your computer's power, might be a GOOD idea to for future prevention if it was caused by a spike.Oh joy.

I swapped the sticks around to see what would happen, and my computer came up with a blue screen and mentioned some kind of registry error. So, I've removed one of the sticks but I'm still on 256mb RAM + I get the same issue I had mentioned in my first post whenever I reboot.

I'll go do what you mentioned tonight.

Solve : Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop IDE hard drive?

Answer»

I am replacing the hard drive DUE to continued problems, blue screens etc keep coming back after resetting to factory settings. I have slaved all important data off the old hard drive onto another pc.

Now I have no idea how to reinstall Windows XP, I have the original Dell disks - does anyone have a link on the procedure to follow?

OR

Is there a way I can simply copy Windows off the old disk onto the new one?

many thanks Why would you replace the hard drive? Just do a format and reinstall on the current drive.Drivers & Downloads for Inspiron 6000
It depends on the disks that Dell provided. Why don't you list them here.I was going to replace the HD because I just thought they had a 'life', and that was why I keep getting problems.

The disks I can find say on them 'contents':
- For reinstalling Dell Inspiron System Software-Device drivers/Diagnostics and Utilities
- Dell wireless Client drivers/User guide
- Dell LCD monitor - HTML User documentation/Drivers (INF,ICM, and CAT files)
- For reinstalling Cyberlink Power dvd software
- For reinstalling Sonic RecordNow software

So I've got 5 cds (none mention Windows XP )1) I don't think there is anything wrong with your hard drive. Blue screen errors are not caused by bad hd's.
2) You need to purchase a Windows CD.OK - I am going to try to repair it (one of the errors that keeps coming up is missing 'HAL.dll file'...

I am in the Recovery Console

a) I have typed 'bootcfg /rebuild
get message ''Error failed to successfully scan disks for Windows installations....use chkdsk to detect any disk errors
then I
b) type 'chkdsk'
get message 'The volume appears to be in good condition and was not checked. Use /p if you want to check the volume anyway

I dont know how to use '/p' or 'space/p' neither work and I get message 'This command is not recognised...'
The dos screen shows 'C:\>'run chkdsk /r from the recovery console. Many thanks, I did that and got message

'the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems'

What should I do next? Well, it does indeed seem to be a bad hd. My apology for suggesting otherwise. Go ahead and replace it.This forum is the the best! Thanks for your help.

Question - is there a way I can copy Windows XP from the old drive onto the new drive?

I dont suppose it will be that simple somehow?

Thanks once again, its MIDNIGHT in the uk now, I am off to bed as I want to be up early to see Europe win the Ryder Cup tomorrow
You can try running the manufacturer's diagnostic tool for the hard drive. If you're lucky, it will relocate the damaged sectors. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287The easiest way is with disc imaging software (Acronis True Image or a free alternative such as Macrium Reflect).I will try to use that software.

I am going to buy a new Western Digital hardrive (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131287).

Is there a link/tutorial to show what to do as I have absolutely no idea! (I can slot it in the laptop, but thats it)

many thanks Imaging might not work if the old drive is damaged, because the image will be corrupted. Be prepared to start from scratch. Hope your Dell has a Restore Partition: http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/index.htm
If it does, it's the only thing the image needs to be successful.
If you can put the old laptop drive into a desktop, it would MAKE it easier.

Solve : Internal modems necessary?

Dell desktops (refurbished) don't come with an internal modem ... so obviosly you couldn't just hook up to a phone line and dial out .... but is it necessary to have ONE if you have a external cable modem w/ a wireless router hooked up to that ?You need a cable modem, this may be built into the router or it may not. Cable MODEMS are never built in to desktop or laptop computers. You do need some kind of wireless ADAPTER though.

A telephone modem is entirely different from a cable modem (or ADSL modem).

It is a prebuilt comp, so it should be on the front of the case near where it SAYS systemax.

If you can't find it, then find someone with internet and download and BURN Belarc Advisor to CD.The only thing it says on the front of tower is systemax and aol optimized and intel inside. I think it an old computer. But on the back above were it says the serial number it says syx_651m03. Is that it? Cause there nuttin else on itThat's it!

Solve : Microphone combatibility?

Answer»

I have a fairly good microphone that I bought for my Cassette Player/Recorder, it has an impedance of 400 ohms and has a 6mm Jack Plug (about 1/4"). Can I use this on my Computer for verbal sound recording? I have noticed that most of the new Mikes are about 2200 ohms so maybe there is some kind of converter on the market. I would appreciate hearing some info on this subject. I can BUILD the ELECTRONICS if required. Thanks. If the jack is compatible there's no harm in trying.Quote from: Allan on October 01, 2010, 05:53:44 AM

If the jack is compatible there's no harm in trying.
.
I can convert the Jack Plug with no trouble to a 3.5 mm, but sometimes the Sound Card can be damaged by drawing too much current with a low resistance device. That is why I need to know if it can be done safely without harm to my Computer HARDWARE. Thanks anyway! RAY.That would depend on what your sound card was made to handle. Make/model?

Indeed, yes, it can damage your sound card. A friend of mine ruined his SoundBlaster Live! 24-Bit card that way years ago. He replaced it with an identical card. I don't remember the exact DETAILS of it, but I believe he plugged the mic into his karaoke DVD player which apparently had the right output SPECS that wouldn't blow the card.O.K.I don't have a separate Sound Card, it's part of the Motherboard I believe, but in either case someone sent me instructions on what to do. Basically I plug the mike into my Cassette Player/Recorder and then use the output from the Headphone Jack Socket. It works fine so far!

Solve : New custom gaming pc wont work with new video card??

Answer»

Hello EVERYONE. I just bought all the pieces needed for my CUSTOM gaming PC. First I'll tell you the problem and then the specs.

I put EVERYTHING together and the PC was good to go. I turned it on for the first time (with the new video card put into the motherboard) and it looked as if the monitor wasnt plugged in (the monitor wouldnt come out of stand by MODE).

So I went and got 2 or 3 different monitors from around the house and still no luck. I was getting really frustrated, until I tried taking the video card out, and that worked. The computer is up and running just fine, but without the video card. I assumed I had to install it after I got everything up and running, I was wrong.

So now, I can put the video card into the mother board, turn the PC on, and the monitor never comes out of stand by mode. I can hear windows starting up and everything, I just cant see it. So, here are my pieces.

Windows 7 Home premium
Motherboard: Asus M4A785TD-V EVO
Processor: AMD Athlon II Quad Core 2.9ghz
RAM: 4gb DDR3 Corsair
550Watt PSU

Video Card I bought is a Raedon HD 5670 1g gddr5 PCI express 2.1 bus ATI
And right now the computer is using the on board standard VGA display.

I tried going into the BIOS settings and changing the internal display to use the PCI first, but no luck. I even tried installing the DRIVER from the CD that came with the video card, but no luck.
