Solve : Two computers - one monitor?

Answer»

I have two Dell Inspiron 530's. The #1 computer has a DVI connector for the monitor and then it also has a VGA connection but it is covered with a black cap. The #2 computer only has a VGA connection. so I want to hook up two computers to one monitor. I have a KVM switch, and the cables are for a VGA connection. So I bought an adapter so that I could hook up my VGA cable to my DVI card. But when I TURN on the first computer I do not get anything on the screen, I have tried to change the settings from digital to analog on the monitor but that does not WORK, the 2nd computer works fine with the monitor. So my question is why is my monitor not working do I have to change some settings somewhere in order for my computer to recognize the VGA cable? The same black screen appears when I hook up the monitor to the VGA port on computer #1 - (after I REMOVE the cap which has a NO symbol on it). Dell only many a few Inspirons that were desktops; almost all were laptops. So you've got an Inspiron 530 Desktop.

#1 MUST have a separate video card so the ONBOARD video has been turned off in the BIOS. You should be able to make it the "primary", then you would not need the adapter.Check your resolutions and refresh rates to make sure you aren't overdriving the display.
Does the monitor have an option to choose your signal source?
Also, what's the monitors make and model?CRT or LCD? What kind of inputs does the monitor have? Just VGA or is there another choice.

Power supply fan not spinning? If it's clogged with dust, it'll overheat quickly and shut down. I assume you don't have a spare psu?

Solve : help..system failed cpu test.?

Answer»

so the other DAY i shut down my COMPUTER. Then when we started it after post it went into a black screen and wouldnt do anything, and after some time(about 30 seconds)it started saying "system failed cpu test". We tried restarting it, replacing the motherboard BATTERY, removed and then placed the cpu back again etc etc...Then we tried REINSTALLING windows. I inserted my windows and booted them and it said something like "setup is looking for hardware" or something like that. After that it would be a black screen again!!! And we dont know what to do. Please help.

The cpu is AMD Athlon Barton 2600 and the motherboard is ASUS A7N8X-E and im using winows xp professional..please help..

P.S. sorry if i spelled something bad..i am from Croatia and trying to write as better as possible..Power on the computer, open up the case and make sure all fans are spinning... If everything looks good, power off the computer, unplug it, re seat the ram modules and all cables, try booting up again...post back with resultsi did all of that..several times..and it didnt work..AMD CPUs don't have much protection for extreme overheating.

Granted this video has the heatsinks pulled from the boards which probably didn't happen to you.

It might not be the CPU. Inspect your motherboard capacitors near the CPU. Look for color or shape distortion. See here for inspection details:

http://www.badcaps.net/pages.php?vid=5Yes, there could be bad capacitors on the board.

Solve : Myspace?

Answer»

When I visit Myspace account settings in HOPES of changing my email ADDRESS with Myspace, I'm taken to another site. I scan my computer EVERYDAY, and found low-risk cookies that have been removed. Is it POSSIBLE for my page to be hijacked with up-to-date anti-spyware like Norton?Anything is possible.

Have you tried copying the new page's URL to the techs at myspace? I would ask them if its right.

Maybe the Admin of the insecure wireless NETWORK you are using is changing it....Gotta love DNS poisoning!

Solve : Ghost Problem?

Answer»

I have created a ghost image file and I'm trying to RESTORE it to ANOTHER HDD which is considerably larger in size. ORIGINAL image came from 150Gb HDD and destination is a 1.5Tb HDD.

The following error message is displayed when I try to restore 'Error message 40011 - destination disk to small'

I restored with the same Ghost image to a 350Gb HDD with no problems.

Help!! Any Suggestions pleaseDoes the BIOS actually recognize the drive as 1.5TB.
http://radified.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1237087705
Does the computer with the 1.5Tb HDD drive recognize its full capacity? LOOK at the drive information from the BIOS if it is posting the info there or look at the posts during startup and press the "pause/break" button to halt it so you can read the screen. It MIGHT be a BIOS restriction that may be fixed with either a BIOS update if you are working with PATA and not SATA.

Solve : Stupid question:?

Answer»
Usually we store information on computer or flash memory ... etc
Is there on the Internet. Sites to store information. And is available only to their owners. (Such as bank information)I think you're referring to a "Cloud" drive. As in, the Internet CLOUD.

Google around for Cloud drive storage. I have no idea what rates/prices go for..

You could always do a poor man's back up, and send your files to your web based eMail account...

For some reason, no matter how secure a company claims to be is with their data, I could never trust my files to a strange server on the Internet..This would be a good article to read before you commit to anything.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_hosting_serviceWhy anyone would want to store bank info on the web is just BEYOND me.....
Maybe i'll have more COFFEE...I do not think it a good idea to store. top SECRET information in databank sush as bank account numbers,...... etc.
But it's good to store a lot of other information, which is difficult to mention hereThe Topic title is making more sense now...
If it can't be mentioned it's another reason not to rely on offline storage...
Do what you must.I recommend using Dropbox for Cloud data storage. Its password protected and stated to be secure. I'm not sure if it is what you are looking for. In any case I would definitely not store unencrypted sensitive files on the internet.

I opt to use the free 2GB + 3GB friend finder bonus account. For added security I create an encrypted container using Truecrypt, also free, of 2GB in size. I fire up Truecrypt whenever I need to get at my sensitive files and then dismount it when I walk away. The only defect to my design that I can see is that the 2GB file would take to long to download if traveling without a computer. Of course the container size can be customized for your DESIRED size. Also, for passwords and such to stuff you could use Keepass.A good one: http://www.adrive.com/I've read three disturbing issues about ADrive.
1.) Who the heck are they? The About Us page shows that it was founded by Veterans of storage and networking industry. Whois shows that the site is registered to DomainsByProxy.com which specializes in keeping the identity of their clients top secret. I wouldn't trust my data on their server even if the US Government was using it!
2.) Does ADrive have a utility that runs on the OS to interface between the file system and the Cloud? I read that it does not and the only way to upload or download data is through their web-login page.
3.) The login page always uses the annoying, yet somewhat secure captcha to prevent any sort of automation that MIGHT have been possible with iMacros.Adrive is not cloud storage, it's just a free FTP server.

Solve : Unallocated disk?

Answer»

I have 2 hdd 40GB for os(xp) and 500gb for data. and now my 500gb is unallocated space. so i can't open and have way to restore data from it.thankHow do you KNOW it's "unallocated" ?

Are you VIEWING "Computer" or "Disk Management"?

Does the drive show up in "My Computer" with a drive letter ?Without KNOWING much about how the 500GB drive came to be "unallocated" I would recommend Testdisk if you accidentally deleted a partition. If the drive was formatted then I don't know if Testdisk will help you. There is some critical portion of the hard drive that if corrupted will cause WINDOWS to treat the hard drive as "Unallocated space". I've been successful in recovering one hard drive with this condition using Spinrite. It might be worth a try although the tool is not free and there is no trial version.

Solve : 1 gb flash drive not using all avalible space.?

Answer»

I have a 1 gb flash drive and I am trying to send some files to it but tera copy keeps saying error. the drive is not at all full as you can see from the screen shot. If I delete a few files from the flash drive it will then allow me to send files to it so I am wondering why it will not use more of the space that it says is available when I look at the drive properties.I have checked google rephrasing the question in different ways but have not found ANYTHING.

[recovering disk space - old attachment DELETED by ADMIN]Sounds like a problem with Teracopy.I always keep my recycle bin empty, but if I didn't then I would be curious to know if the recycle bin is used in the disk quota or not. I'm going to have to experiment tomorrow unless someone knows the answer to that already. I also wouldn't rule out hidden files or system files interfering. I don't have any EXPERIENCE with Teracopy.

Personally I would slap that USB key on a Linux machine to see what is there for hidden files, but it can be done on a windows machine as well. What size files are you trying to PUT on the drive?

Have you tried putting the files on there using a different method then Teracopy? The files I am trying to add are around 10 mb. I have not tried another method besides teracopy.I just right click the file and choose send to. update: It seems I can drag and drop the files with no problem and it is still teracopy that handles that operation so maybe it is just a bug or something it seems to be working just fine draging the files and I have no problem doing it that way.. Thanks for the suggestion of trying another method. It worked I am happy! take it easy! Quote from: bobgar34 on April 12, 2010, 12:10:24 AM

If you are dragging and dropping files from one folder to the next or from the desk top to a folder then it should be windows handling that and not Teracopy.when I drag a file and drop it the teracopy window pops up showing a progress bar. When Teracopy is installed it has an option to be the default copy method. Solve : Connecting to Insecure Wireless Networks?

Answer»

I didn't choose the BEST subject TITLE. My question was about insecure wireless networks; not insecure websites. If you're connecting to an insecure wireless network, is there anyway to determine rather or not the administrator of that network is watching what you do on the computer? My question is actually PERTAINING to insecure wireless networks; not insecure websites.

Also, can you PREVENT the administrator from watching you?You should assume you are being watched...Period.Quote from: quickques on April 12, 2010, 01:50:20 PM

I agree with Patio, also you should note that connecting to an unsecured network also means (especially with Vista and Windows 7) they could easily detect your machine and do some NASTY things given the chance.

Solve : Epson Stylus crashes programs when printing?

Answer»

This is a hard one to explain, so I'll use some screenshots. The printer is an Epson Stylus D92, and I'm running W7 Ultimate 64bit. The printer worked fine with a Vista laptop using the same programs.

I have just updated the driver to the latest version (which is WIN7 64bit compatible) but still no luck. Following other recommendations from online searches, I changed the default printer to the Adobe PDF Convertor virtual printer (which actually solved another problem I was having) but didn't solve the problem.

As you can see from screenshots below, the Adobe PDF printer was set as default. Upon choosing the Epson printer from the LISTS, the whole program froze up and I had to force-close both programs. These are not the only programs affected THOUGH, from what I can tell, every program is affected.

I have tried numerous online searches, but my problem is that I don't know exactly what to search for!

I have tried unistalling all the printer software/drivers and installed again but no luck either.

Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro:

Word 2007:

Thanks in advance for any light on the problem.I suppose this means no one has any ideas....I was unable to install my Epson stylus DX4050 on a new windows 7 laptop, I emailed Epson support & they replied they haven't released a driver for windows 7 yet & to use Windows Vista Drivers which are fully compatible.
It worked for me ... hope this helps.
Thanks. I'll try that. You're welcome ... hope it works for you.Well, I have got the latest Windows 7 drivers installed, but I'll try emailing them. They told me to use Windows Vista drivers on W7 which worked fine , this was about a month AGO & Microsoft hadn't approved W7 drivers, but as you have a different printer model it's probably best to EMAIL Epsom Support. Epsom Salts support ? ?

Couldn't resist....

Hadn't thought of that ... might be worth trying though !!!!

Solve : ZAP Hard Drive.? Yes, Completely?

Can you ZAP Hard Drive.? Yes, Completely.
This is a software tool that is very specific to the Hard Drive. So I put in here under hardware.

Can you really, really erase a platter so that nothing is there?
Low LEVEL formatQuote from: Allan on April 12, 2010, 02:00:47 PM
Low level format

Nope.

You cannot low level format an IDE or SATA drive. SCSI, ESDI and MFM, yes.

Writing zeroes to the drive with something like DBAN removes anything that is there. forensic recovery consists of using something other then the drives read head to analyze the platters. In general this makes it possible to determine what was previously WRITTEN to the disk.
Oh, would you look at that. DBAN is exactly what is being covered by the video.

I might ALSO point out that the "example" scenario that was played out in theat video is both contrived and ridiculous. a format/reinstall was obviously not performed.

a Format/Reinstall is ENOUGH, IMO, to make recovery of data impossible for about 90% of the population.
Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 12, 2010, 02:12:54 PM

Sorry - I guess the current terminology for ide and ata drives is "reinitialize". Essentially it's the same thing, using a utility provided by the hd manufacturer to set it back to the same state as the day you purchased it. But you are correct as usual BC - it really isn't what we used to refer as low level formatting.

And I'm with you - a standard format should be more than enough for almost every typical user.

Solve : Insecure Networks?

Answer»

When connecting to an insecure network, is there anyway to find out if the administrator of the network that you're connecting to is viewing your computer activities, or is it impossible to find out?Anything is POSSIBLE.....

If you have a good firewall and your MACHINE has security setup the chances of the admin of the web site are very low.

they said admin of the nothing was said about websites.

quickques:

There is no way to determine this. the ROUTER configuration could be set to log activities, and, strictly SPEAKING, the owner of the router has every right to monitor the activities of people connecting to their network anyway.

Solve : CPU Questions...?

Answer»

When I go to "control panel" in Vista and then "system & maintenance" and then "system",it shows the big blue Windows circle with the Windows "flag" in the circle and half way down the page "performance index" and at the bottem my product i.d. and if Windows has been activated.(I say this because I`m Dutch and my Windows is in Dutch and I might have missplelled something).
Now my question:After the word "processor" it says; Intell(R) Core(TM)2Duo CPU E7300 @ 2.66 GHz 4.45 GHz
What is the 4.45 GHz after the 2.66 GHz I have never seen the 4.45 GHz notification after my processor speed !!!
How do I reset all my factory settings for my processor ect.ect. And do I have to reset my settings because of the 4.45 GHz notification ?(I`m scared my processor has been overclocked to much and will GET too hot !)
I hope I have been clear with my explanation. Is there anybody who can help me?
Thanks;Eric... Have you overclocked? What is your core temperature?

Thanks for your quick reply.
Do you know a good, but simple, program to see what my temperatures are ? And I would love to know if there is a simple program to see if my video-card is running OK !
Someone (MIS-)used my computer and now I have all kinds of problems !
Can someone overclock my video-card ?
It`s driving me crazy,my computer is doing strange and I`m thinking to format everything and re-install Windows(Does that SOLVE all my troubles ?).
Again thanks and hope to "hear" from you soon:Eric. You can use System Information for Windows (SIW) to check your temperatures in real TIME. It will also tell you your current CPU clock speed and other information. GRAPHICS cards are more specific, which graphics card do you have?

Webpage: http://www.gtopala.com/ [Tools>Options to change language to Dutch] (multilanguage version only)
Download link: http://www.gtopala.com/download/siw-setup.exe

If you press either F2 or delete during the POST (as soon the computer is switched on) you will enter the BIOS, there should be a "Factory Reset" option either under the "Help" or "Tools" options (it may be under other options but all COMPUTERS have it somewhere). That will remove any CPU over clocking and wont effect Windows.

Solve : just another pwr supply prob?

NOTE if its an older DELL UNFORTUNATELY you need a DELL PSU...I replaced batteries in my electric razor because I thought they were faulty. I failed to realize that the power plugs were dead. Thank goodness my GF tried to fire up the hair drier before I tossed out the razor. Lack of sleep tends to mess up my troubleshooting.

Solve : Internal_Power_Error?

Answer»

Hi guys, I'm back again!

My latest custom built machine has lately been giving me a bit of trouble.

Its specs are:

ASUS P5KPL-CM Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.8Ghz
4GB DDR 2 Dual Channel @ 800MHz
Amaze ATi HD 4870 GDDR5 1GB
Creative X-Fi Titanium- PCI-e Edition in 5.1 Channel
24x LG DVD Super-Multi WRITER w/Lightscribe
500-watt PSU
21.5" HD ProView LED monitor

Running XP Service Pack 3

So the problem is that twice now, it has got to the stage where I turn the machine on, and right after the xp logo disappears, the screen flickers like normal then I get a bluescreen 0xA0 INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR

I can boot into safe mode, then restart the machine and it will go great untill I turn it off.

I also found that it seemed to be a Windows issue...but not entirely sure. The first time it happened I reformatted and the issue disappeared for about a month. It has since started doing it again, but I reformatted again this morning and it has disappeared again

The components are all quite new, especially the graphics card, PSU and sound card.

I have tried to google the issue for a specific cause, but it seems tro be more prevalent with Vista and Windows 7...

What are the possible causes of this BSOD?It seems like an issue with the video card driver. Save Mode loads a standard vga video driver and you obviously did not have any issues while in Safe Mode. The problem seems to happen when the video card driver is used.

Have you got the latest driver from the Manufacturer ?
Or, if you have the latest already, perhaps an older version of the driver will work...
If you are able to stay booted up long enough try these suggestions..

It could be the video card though. Using different operating systems, thus different drivers hasn't seemed to help.. Reseating the video card may prove useful.

Of course, safe mode, prevents many other things from loading, so it could be an operating system configuration, or service issue..

What programs did you install after the first time you reinstalled ? EDIT: What changes were made, in all ?

What anti-virus program are you using ?

None at the moment...but I was using Avast 5.

The changes seemed to start after using a creative PCI-e card...and I have seen a forum post where this problem and a creative card was mentioned, but that doesn't SEEM to be the issue because I am using the exact same setup now with no issues whatsoever.

I can also recall another difference...I installed Python 2.3 for my course use, and then CHANGED the paths in windows so that i could run it without long CMD lines.
The windows paths weren't affected though so it's all very confusing If the problem happened more frequently this would be much easier to diagnose because it would be a matter of trial and error, more or less.

I saw a patch at microsoft.com for this specific error. However, the patch is intended only for a Vista computer BSOSing while entering hibernation.

hmm, what to do..

Get a multimeter and check the output voltages on the PSU. Voltages should be within plus/minus 5% of the specified rating. Any more than that I'd say the psu is a prime suspect.

Update the chipset driver.

What BRAND of memory are you using ? I've got the memory QVL right in front of me but no brand name to go on... It seems to me more and more, using ram not specified in the qvl causes odd errors, like this..I don't know how accurate it is, but you can also check most voltages while the computer is running by using Speedfan. I love that program!

Solve : RAID 0?

Answer»

Benchmarks are meaningless UNLESS properly taken.

One drive can operate twice as fast as ANOTHER of the exact same model, and both can still be within manufacturing specs. One benchmark chart can be completely different from another, but both can be completely accurate. My point is not th consider such benchmarks at such a fine granularity or to GO through them with a fine tooth comb; statistics are meaningless when the method to gather that data is flawed.

Also, "certifies" the drives for RAID?The RAIDmeister....of course.BC_Programmer thanks for explaining RAID,it`s not totally clear but a lot clearer for me!
I don`t know if you can help me but I would love to know how to use and what to buy for my drives.I run a Software-Studio(Pro-Tools) and now "they" tell me I have to run my Pro-Tools from one drive and my plug-ins,software instruments and SAMPLES from an other drive. One drive has to start up a lot for quick loads.
Is a very fast(expensive)drive allways better. What`s the best drive and drive "system" for sale ? If you can help I`d be gratefull.

Solve : Monitor / USB?

Answer»

Can you run a monitor by connecting it through a USB port? No.honestly at first I didn't think so either, but I just did a search for "USB to VGA" and there are adapters you can plug into your USB port, for MONITORS...Never tried 'em myself, though. It appears there are USB adapters for DVI, as well.

Do a google search for USB to DVI adapters, OR, USB to VGA adapters.

I have no idea how this would work out if you're using an add-in video card, for video..It SEEMS to me that those adapters are actually external video cards and that they would not USE the internal video card.Correct. My answer STANDS: No.

Solve : only 7 usb?

Answer»

Is there a computer/electronics reason that USB hubs stop at seven ports?Probably to maintain the data transfer rate. A USB 2.0 port only has a data transfer rate of 480Mbs divide that by 7 gives you ~68Mbs. Now that's fine for keyboards, mice, printers, etc but that would REDUCE the performace of USB hard drives, webcams & other bandwidth hungry peripherals. It's probably considered BAD practice to load anymore than 7 extra ports onto any one original port. A little bit like why you're not supposed to plug an electrical extension cord into another extension cord (except without the risk fire). You would have to have 40 USB ports plugged into a USB 2.0 to reduce it's performance to that of USB 1.0.

That's my opinion anyway.

You could always glue two 7 port USB hubs together and plug them into 2 different USB ports Quote from: Accessless on April 09, 2010, 11:13:42 AM

err...

that's true, but you'd need to have a hard drive or flash drive plugged into every port and copying data from them in order to do that.
I don't think there is a limitation (standards wise) to the number of ports a hub may have.I wonder whether it has to do with power issues, since USB devices, to a varying degree depending on the device, are powered by the USB port. They usually use another power source to bolster that of the usb ports (wall SOCKET).OK a friend of mine read this and said, if we use 2 hubs, then its officially called a hubahuba...and if we tape one hub on top of the others, they are thereafter called a hubabova.

ANYWAY...thanks for the answers. Quote from: mnkypprs on April 09, 2010, 12:45:07 PM

I like that! Some marketing person is GOING to pick up on that, expect to see it on shelves soon.

I think Soy is right, it is a power issue. I have seen AC powered hubs that were designed to be stackable meaning the manufacturer expected a some what unlimited number of ports to be used. I'm sure there is a limit somewhere but it depends on the useage.USB devices can be daisy-chained up to 212 connections.....though i wouldn't recommend it.

Solve : Start up problem.?

Answer»

Ok, so I start my computer and it goes to the Boot up page with all the options for Bios, Diagnostics, etc...

After that the screen goes black and a portion of the icon in the upper left corner shows up and it just stops.

If I turn off the computer and restart it, it wont even RECOGNIZE the VIDEO card. I have to wait 20+ minutes before it will even let me see the boot up page again. It will let me go to BIOS and play with the settings there, but any of the other options just send it to this... crash?

I recently moved and sent my computer to myself via FedEx. It was properly packaged, though I am sure the box got jostled around but I cannot find ANYTHING inside out of place.

I am about 80% sure that there is nothing wrong with the HARD DRIVE, because I can hear it spinning and is making no unusual sounds.

Any help out there!?Power down and unplug all power sources.
Open a side panel and remove and re-seat all components...RAM, vid card, sound card etc,
Unplug and re-plug all data cables that connect to HDD's and optical drives.

As usual take anti-static precautions.

Re-connect everything and power up...

Best of Luck

Solve : PCMCIA sound cards?

Answer»

It's possible that the onboard sound has been disabled. Restart the computer, when you see the bios screen, hit either F1, F2 or delete.. This will allow you to enter the cmos setup.. You'll have to SEARCH around for the sound configuration and check to see if the onboard sound has been disabled, and enable it (saving you settings properly before exiting) However, if it was working with Windows 98 and you have not changed anything in the bios since then, I suspect that the bios setting is not the problem..

So what happened when you tried to install the other two drivers ?

Go back into device manager and look at the Resources tab of the audio driver with the error. Does it indicate any "conflicts" ?F2 for mine. I did that first thing but had no idea where to look to see if it was on or off. There is Main, System Devices, Security, Power, Boot and Exit.

In System devices under Audio : PnPOS
1st DMA channel: DMA1
2nd DMA channel: DMA0

Is what is indicated. When I hit F6 to change it there is:

DISABLED,

ENABLED
SB I/O address 220h
WSS I/O address 530h
AdLib I/O address 388h
Interrupt: IRQ 5
1st DMA channel DMA 1
2nd DMA channel DMA 0

Auto
1st DMA channel DMA 1
2nd DMA channel DMA 0 Well I'll be...it works now. I just enabled it and REBOOTED and it's working.

I don't believe it.hmm, I wonder how it got disabled...

Sorry about giving the "go ahead" on that sound card. Maybe you can cancel the order..

I guess when you did the installation, all the drivers necessary were included. Dell didn't list anything for XP so I assumed there weren't drivers for your setup.. I need to keep a more open mind... After all, Intel DID have a driver..

Glad it's working for you now..My secretary will be in touch with you, with my bill Quote from: EEVIAC on April 11, 2010, 01:35:01 AM

EEVICA...

My last OS was 98 and everything worked except the lone USB 1.0 port. Good sound as well. I may be over THINKING or trying to do something that may not work but I am giving it a try anyway. I bought this off ebay. Maybe I can at least have USB ports with XP on this laptop.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300415959655&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I haven't bought the sound card yet. I was wondering if it was an option if I couldn't get it the normal way. What I did buy is in the link above for USB ports. It's a pcmcia card that I should be able to just put in the slot and up load from a CD that comes with it. Did you check it out to see if I could use it? I THINK I can, we'll see.

I want to go wireless if I can. So far everything else is working correctly now, maybe I can do that as well.

Thanks for your help. Have a couple of brews on me.

Sure, get a wireless PCMCIA card...Get one that support WPA encryption. Not sure if all wireless cards do. You don't want to use WEP on your system. Make sure you install the XP WPA patch as well. OTHERWISE WPA won't work. I'm sure the USB card you ordered will work fine..

As I said, initially I figured there were not any chipset drivers available for your computer, because DELL didn't list any for your OS, but this is obviously not the case.. All the necessary drivers seem to be installed already..

This pretty much cracks the mystery of why the pcmcia network adapter is working. The chipset drivers to enable networking ARE installed and working, after all..Gotta go now. Again thanks for the help. I bumped you up to 43. I'll keep you posted when I get the USB card in if your interested.

Solve : PC won't boot up After mem upgrdade?

Answer»

I recently upgraded my PC's MEMORY to 2GB. I installed the correct mem 2x1 GB PC3200. When I tried to BOOT up the PC, it hangs on the Dell screen. It does not go any further. I re-installed the old mem modules, and it booted up fine. What's going on? Do I have to flash the Bios? What's the DELL model # ?

http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Download the Windows ISO CD using the link I provided. Download Image Burn, install it and run it. Click on "Burn Image to Disc" and select the ISO file to burn it to CD..

With the CD in the computer (making sure that the CD DRIVE is set as priority in CMOS) restart the computer and let the computer boot off the CD. Let memtest86 run for a couple of hours and report back, whether it detect any "errors"

It could be that just ONE of the new ram modules is bad. It You could also try starting the computer with one of them, in the slot closest to the cpu.. If it works with only one, then you'll know which one is bad.

The DVD player also seems to be getting very hot. May this be the SOURCE of the problem, and what to do?

Solve : Mouse freezing and CPU peaks when it happens.?

How do you stop the mouse freezing every few minutes and when it does the CPU shows spike. OjasErrm to even stand a chance at answering that we would need to know what computer you are using (brand & model), the system specifcation (if home brew) if you know it & your operating system.

Does the mouse and CPU stay peeked and frozen until you hard reset or just momentarily? It does not matter what the brand and model of your computer is. Open task manager to the Properties tab and sort on the CPU column with highest usage at the TOP. Next time the cpu spikes, see which PROCESS is eating the cycles and post back here. And you know that he is using Windows how? Task manager may not show the offending PROBLEM if it's a hardware issue. My point was that without even a vague point of REFERENCE to go on, it could be just about anything.

All looks okay:
Bus Speed - 200MHz
DRAM Freq - 375MHz (CPU/8; 3000/8=375)
PC2-6400 - 400MHz (2*200MHz Bus Speed)

Why you got the message "'Overclock failed reset to default values" is a mystery, but BIOS has been reset to 800 where it BELONGS. If you still get BSOD's, test the memory. Thanks for that CC. I did get a further BSOD, but this occured whilst I was away from the PC. The first I knew was with a message that 'Windows had an unexpected error & closed etc.' It had RESTARTED & said there had been a BSOD, & overclock failure. Again I have not done anything except SET BIOS to default settings. However I have had no further EPISODES since. Alexma It could be a ram compatibility issue..

running 2 AMD processors, inquiry on dual channal says NA, not sure if I can use 2 more in 1 Gig size or stop at 2 more 512mb. Right now my video download is a little choppy. Am I missing any specs required for mem to buy to work in system?
Appreciate your thoughts....R CStandard Memory 0 MB (removable)
Maximum Memory 8.0 GB
Memory Expansion 4 sockets (2 banks of 2)

CPU Type AMD Opteron DP, UP, Athlon 64 FX 51
Model Comments 800MHz FSB, VIA K8T800 Chipset, ATX Form FACTOR

Your motherboard accommodates 8 GB but your OS will only be able to use about 3.5 GB so 2 GB should be fine. I would try to add the same Kingston PC2700 only in 1GB modules . I'm not sure what you MEAN by your video download being choppy, but more memory MAY not help with that. It's certainly not going to hurt anything though. My system runs xp pro at 32 bit, was not sure about, SDRAM and DIMMS,

Solve : computer gets hot but power supply doesnt?

Answer»

Hi, I have a gaming laptop it is an MSiGX620.

specs here
http://nexus404.com/Blog/2008/08/14/msi-gx620-gx720-centrino-2-gaming-laptops-specifications-detailed/

I used to be able to play games on high GRAPHICS, for as long as I wanted, but now my computer gets too hot and shuts off. I ran a test for this. I ran a game on high graphics, and while my harddrive was to hot to touch, my power supply was surprisingly cold, only a tiny of bit warm. This is not normal for my computer, when I first gamed on this computer, the power supply would get extremley hot. but games ran fine on high settings and did not shut off.

My prediction is that it is the power supply, I have it plugged in all the time to my computer and stuff, i've also tried removing my battery from the back, did nothing, computer STILL shut off.

Even worse graphic games shut off while playing. What i need to know is

  • Do I need a new power supply (plug)
  • Do I need to send my computer in?

my warranty is EXPIRED too, so please don't just say, send it back. If a new plug is all I need thats all I want to spend money on.Are you referring to a Power supply or a Backup power supply. Power SUPPLIES are internal.

Second, are you referring to the hard drive or the PC case?

Since you're probably referring to a UPS, are there any indicator lights that would indicate to change the battery or wether there was a failure?Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 08, 2010, 05:12:54 PM

BC....this is a laptop, not a desktop.

Sudden shutdowns sound like a overheating issue, the fans are probably full of dust and need to be cleaned out.

If the adapter was not inputting the right voltage then the laptop would fail to charge at all I would say, but getting it checked out at a local electronic repair store shouldn't be an issue. (not a BIG chain store but a small retail store, because it will be alot cheaper, and the big chain store will most likely want to repair the lappy too)

Solve : Video Card Problems, I'm helpless :(?

Answer»

Ok, I've posted on this site a couple of times, it has been a while since though. I've once again come to need the aid of you wonderful forum dwellers. Here is what happened:

Out of nowhere, just today my computer started flipping out, I was playing a game, Battle Forge and after a minute or two the computer would completely lock up. So, I reboot, everything is fine. I even try another game just to make sure it isn't specific to Battle Forge, so I fire up Medieval Total War and play a couple rounds and everything is fine, no lockup, so at this point I'm thinking it is related to Battle Forge, so I start browsing the net, and out of nowhere the screen blacks out and I get a blue screen, I notice it is an nvidia.dll, I didn't have enough time to read the specific file.

So, from there I know something is up with video, I boot up again, I'm now getting lines of dots in the first boot process, and even in the windows splash screen. Once booted to windows (no graphical anomalies here), the system tells me my graphics card is disabled (disabled I guess meaning just basic drivers loaded) due to a problem with drivers, ERROR code 43. I look up the error code, apparently it confirms my suspicions of the problem being hardware. That is where I stand, I seem powerless to lift this sanction windows has on my graphics card, I don't know how to rectify the problem.

I've got:

Windows Vista latest versions
Geforce 8800 GT 512 (had drivers before latest, then UPDATED after first lockup)
4gb ram (two sticks corsair, 1 stick generic ram)
Nforce 680i MotherBoard
Intel Dual Core E8400 3.0 ghz WolfDale

I've got my system running normally, no overclocking or anything like that, this system has been solid as a rock for as LONG as I can remember, which leads me to believe that this is purely hardware, which sucks big time, MAYBE one of you has the golden ticket though.

Thanks a lot for the help!Where did you get the driver from? Did you use the Windows Update Utility, or did you go to the Manufacturers website? I recommend downloading from the Manufacturer.

http://www.brothersoft.com/bluescreenview-download-288727.html

Use the link and download BlueScreenView 1.2. Use it to open the contents of c:\windows\minidump and display it on your next post.I got the latest drivers from nvidia.com, I've always downloaded them from that site. I will run the utility as soon as I get home today, I'm at work right now.

Thanks a lot for your response. There are no files in c:\windows\minidump, still at a loss herehmm, interesting. My Vista computer blue screened just the other day, and it did not produce a dump file, either. Unless, I'm mistaken, the default settings in Vista are suppose to provide a .dmp file in c:\windows\minidump after a blue screen. Did you by any chance get a glimpse at the error code. It would look similar to this:
0x0000000A

Try, unplugging your computer, remove the video card and reseat it. Power the computer back on and try to install the driver again... If no joy, disable your anti-virus utility and try again..No joy, can't figure it out, what would be reporting that error? Or is it an error because the hardware is jacked? I've tried everything aside from trying a new video card since I don't have any spare parts or onboard video.Do a system RESTORE to before the error started, and reinstall the driver. See what you getWell, found out it was definitely the card, I tried it in my brothers computer, and same exact lines of dots during the POST and Windows splash screen , I figured it was hardware, now I've gotta' scrounge up cash for a new one.

What a load,

Thanks for all your helpsuperhave you tried to rollback the driver?Yea I've tried everything, and upon further research it appears that there is a fault with the manufacturing of the EVGA 8800 gt, gts, and GX with the soldering and joints and whatnot, they are all dying and an increased rate, there are apparently a legion of people in the same boat I'm in right now.

I have heard of 'baking' the video card in the oven, but to me that sounds like a trip to the end of the rainbow.Quote from: Nastidon on April 09, 2010, 06:47:14 PM

I have heard of 'baking' the video card in the oven

Bad idea. Cold solder joints (where for some reason the solder and the terminals don't make good contact) is not an uncommon problem in manufacturing cards and baking a card in the oven might (long shot) melt the solder joints into making good contact, but it can't be good on the other components.

Is the card still under warranty? Then take it back.

Solve : Webcam questions?

Answer»

I am going to hook up a webcam purchased in the US to my computer. I would also like to purchase a webcam for a computer located in PORTUGAL.

My question is: can I purchase the second webcam in the US or do I have to purchase the webcam in Portugal because of the differences in the broadcast media PAL vs NTSC? The webcam will be used for communication purposes between two households. Any SUGGESTIONS?

Any suggestions on the software to be used to commnunicate?

Thanks in advance for any help in this matterYou can purchase a webcam in the US and use them Portugal, USB is UNIVERSALLY 5V 500mA so it shouldn't matter what country you are in unless you purchase an externally powered one i.e. plugs into a wall socket (rare if not NON existant). The PC does the encoding/decoding when it comes to PAL & NTSC so that's nothing to worry about.

I assume you are trying to set up video & audio communication so I would recommend SKYPE, its free software and free to make calls. The only charge is too make calls to land lines and mobiles.

http://www.skype.com (your browser will automatically redirect to your local region)Webcams typically operate at baseband video (very low frequency). PAL and NTSC are over the air broadcast standards designed to operate at much higher frequency's and don't have anything to do with webcams.

Never SAY never, but it shouldn't make any difference where the webcams are bought. Here is some information.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL

What you get from the USB port is neither PAL or the US format. It is RAW video data that has to be converted to display on a standard TV set.

Solve : New build turning on and off repeatedly in a loop, help?

Answer»

Ok Computer Commando, I'll get a new GB of ram tomorrow to try it and will even get a DIFFERENT make but as I'm completely inexperienced at this I didn't understand that if you say someone else has the same symptoms and says it turned out to be his ram then it must be my ram as well.

Now if you'd said that broken ram in or out would give the same symptoms (as in the post after) it would have been clearer even to me and I wouldn't have GONE and annoyed you. It simply didn't occur to me that broken ram would give the same results as no ram in the MOBO.

And what's the odds of both ram sticks being broken because I tried them individually?

Anyway, come tomorrow will get some more ram as a single gig is just about cheap enough and will let you now. If it is simply the ram that would make my day.Couldn't get any compatible ram locally as Intel recommend no more then 1.65volts. Everything locally is the same but for the voltage, which is 1.9V so can't use it.

I've contacted the company I purchased all the parts from. They don't think it's the memory. From the symptoms, they believe its either the mobo or PSU. I did get a mobo testing switch set but get nothing. No beeps and no leds.

They've given me some things to test. Here's what they asked me to do -

Remove the motherboard from the case, remove everything from the board apart from the CPU + heat sink and then clear the CMOS (refer to your motherboard manual for how to do this).

Place the board on a non-conductive surface, plug in the main power connector (usually 24 pin) and any extra power connector (4pin or 8 pin) the case speaker and the power button, and power the system up.

Depending on the board, you may receive a series of POST beeps. Make a note of these.

Add a single stick of memory and power the system again, noting the result.

Finally, add the graphics card (if using one) and again note the resulting POST beeps. Please be aware that you will need to plug in the six and or eight pin PCI-E power connections from your PSU.

Additionally, try swapping as many components as you can with other compatible components (PSU, motherboard, CPU, RAM, graphics card) to try to pinpoint the problem.

If you receive no POST beeps at any point or the POST beeps don't change when you add a component, then please contact us.

Note: Some motherboards have VOICE instructions detailing the problem, such as "CPU not present" and may not have beep codes. In order to hear these, you would need to have speakers connected to the speaker output on the motherboard (if present).

At least they pay for returns (unless they can START it up when they get it which is fair enough).

They've asked me to return the mobo, cpu, memory and PSU.

I'll post the results when I hear from them. Now I just have to resign myself to waiting. The steps they gave you are the same I suggested in an earlier post, so I hope they give you more of a clue as to what is causing this. I was leaning towards the RAM, but thats just based on personal experiences. Also, the PCI Express connector, (6 or 8 pin), to the GPU from the PSU is important. I'm not too sure what the symptoms are if this isn't connected, but it probably just won't work at all. You did make sure to connect this the first time, right?I know it's a bit late now but, I also think that it sounds like either a CPU or PSU issue, professionals with the proper testing gear would be the best to find out which.

In the mean time, do you happen to know if you were running at least the F3 BIOS version? Finally sorted. I've not had the parts back but the company have tested them and confirm it was a problem with the MoBo. They haven't said what the exact problem was but are going to replace the MoBo.

Thanks to everyone who suggested any possible fixes.Fantastic. Got the replacement Mobo and everything works. As I said earlier, it turned out to be a faulty Mobo. Might join the SBCC now.

Thanks again for all help and suggestions

Solve : My New Machine is Ssssslllloooowwwww?

Answer»

So corporate just bought us all new laptops. Most people use them for email and PowerPoint.

I do lots of data analysis.

For instance, I have one spreadsheet with four worksheets with 120+ columns and 55,000 rows of data, each. With calculations.

Not enough horsepower to run Subtotals, and Access is hanging on me.

I've been up til 3 last few nights, waiting for this thing to try to cook through my data.

So... Stupid question. Is there anything I can do, like adding RAM, to HELP? Doubtful I'll get a new computer for 34 more months.

Dell Latitude E6400
Win XP Pro SP 3
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
P 8600 @ 2.40 GHx
2.39 GHz, 2.98 GB of RAM
The RAM is pretty much maxed out for a 32 bit OPERATING system.

This is not a problem of Computing power but rather insufficient allocation of that computing power and bad design on the part of the data management:

Quote

I have one spreadsheet with four worksheets with 120+ columns and 55,000 rows of data, each. With calculations.

This is simply ludicrous. However did companies manage before Excel existed or before Excel was able to manage more then 32768 rows?

Split the Excel file into multiple files.
Five hours last night trying to split one file into its usable components.

About 30 minutes time on task, rest waiting for recalcs, saves, crashes, etc.

I have to take what the client gives me, you know?

that's true. I suppose that for every limitation they break with every new version, there are people that will use them, heh.

Quote
("How did companies exist?" You weren't around then, were you?)

Actually, I was being sarcastic. Obviously, with the limitation of 32768 rows they didn't have spreadsheets with 55,000 rows. But I guess every time they lift a limitation some silly person (client, in your case) takes it as an invitation that they should use that many rows

Aside from that, you've got a lot of data to process and that's simply going to take a long time. no matter how you slice it. BEST I can think of is to somehow make your formulae faster, but that will probably not yield a huge speed GAIN.

So I have had this problem for a while now and have just been working around it I guess but it is very annoying and can't seem to figure out what is wrong.

I switched from Windows XP Pro to Vista Ultimate and now my video RANDOMLY crashes I guess. I'm not really sure of the technical term but it happens with various actions: maximizing streaming video, opening pictures, starting up games, closing Winamp, once it happened when I clicked on the "Shoutcast Radio" tab on Winamp. Basically what happens is my screen goes black with brown horizontal stripes or grey, then it goes to a light green color with black horizontal stripes.

I then ctrl+alt+delete to open the task manager and I can get back to my desktop without rebooting.

I don't get any error messages. I have updated my video card, motherboard and monitor drivers. Any help WOULD be appreciated.

Not much RAM for a 64 bit VISTA system. If you can not put in at least 4GB, there is not much advantage to using the 64 bit system.

You must have the RIGHT 64 bit drivers for ALL of the hardware. Close does not count. The video card is failing. So is the answer just a new video card? Or more memory? Or what?Quote from: JoePoz on April 08, 2010, 09:14:18 PM

It's either the card or the driver, but to be honest, I've seen this sort of thing dozens of times, personally, and every single time it was a problem with the card itself. (and "this device is working properly" just translates to windows being able to load the driver, doesn't mean it's working, heh. it could be on fire and windows would happily report everything was a-ok. Ah ok, well I don't think it's the driver because I've tried the old driver and the newest driver and neither works. So I'm guessing it's a problem with the card itself. Thanks for the help.

Solve : Finding Driver for Built-in Soundcard?

Answer»

Recently, I had just reformatted my Windows XP running Gateway computer. I was able to install my Graphic and Internet card without a problem, yet I noticed I did not have a sound and that it did not recognize my speakers. After looking everywhere to see why I did not have sound, the overall answer was "Install a driver for your sound card"

My sound card is built into my motherboard and I don't have any disks. How can I find the driver for it?1) Install the chipset driver
2) Go to the Gateway site or the site of the sound card (chip) manufacturer and download and install the correct driveroption A is to lookup your PC on gateway's site and get a driver from them.

Gateway unfortunately has a terrible site, so if you want to do it geek style, pop the case and see if the motherboard has a model number, and find specs from the manufacturer. If the board is not CLEARLY labled in any way, then look at the board near the speaker jacks, and see if there is a small chip near there. You may be able to identify the sound chip its SELF. google any sort of #s or text on the chip, and this may lead you in the right direction.

If no chip, you could take a shot in the dark and download some ac'97 driversQuote from: tsarles on April 08, 2010, 10:59:08 AM

If no chip, you could take a shot in the dark and download some ac'97 drivers
No, don't "take a shot" at anything.

You can find the model of your sound device in device manager. If you can't find it there download and run either Everest or Belarc AdvisorThis may SEAM like a stupid question though... Where can I find the exact model of my computer?

Where it says computer, I see "Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz 3.20 GHz, 1.50 GB of Ram"
Though that doesn't seam like it would be it.

I computer is rather old and I don't see it on the site.Download Everest here:
http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Open it, then CLICK Computer, then Summary.
In the upper menu, go to Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under the line Debug - PCI

Solve : Possible to Upgrade RAM from DDR2 to DDR3??

Answer»

Hello and good day. I would like to ask a technical advice to all PC experts. I have an LG laptop model LW70 Express whose specs (as per CPU-Z) are as follows: Processor = Intel Pentium M 760, Code name Dothan, brand ID=22, Speed=2.00 Ghz; Motherboard = LG Electronics model Hunter, Chipset=Intel i915PM/GM, Rev 03, Southbridge=Intel 82801FBM (ICH6-M); Memory = 2 x 512 MB (total 1024 Mb), DDR2, PC2-4300 (266 Mhz).
I would like to upgrade the memory of my laptop to 2 GB, DDR3, is this possible with the present specs of my LG laptop? If it is possible, what is the spec of the DDR3 RAM (2 x 1024 Mb) that I should PURCHASE? ‘Hope to hear from all PC experts fanatics. Thank you very MUCH.Quote from: Bernee on April 01, 2010, 03:19:37 AM

No

Your laptop motherboard will accept only DDR2

But you might consider, UPGRADING in the sense of USING higher speed DDR2 modules

See here:

http://www.outletpc.com/c3146.html

Disregard this link--- It's DDR3

I'm not sure what the total memory is that your laptop motherboard supports. If it supports 1 Gigabyte total, go with two 512 Megabyte modules. If two Gigabytes are supported, go with two 1 Gigabytes modules..

This will ensure dual channel capabilities in data transfer.. As opposed to single channel

Just google around for the cheapest DDR2 SO-DIMM 533 MHz memory you can find, in the configuration I suggested

I would like to slightly rectify this statement. I'm not the most familiar person on which memory brands are BETTER, so going for the "cheapest" option, might not be the best idea. Opt for Mr. Commando's idea, but look for speeds of 533 MHz..From Kingston.com: LG Electronics LW70 Express Notebook PCTo all who gave technical advices and suggestions, thank you very much. The website of "crucial" was very informative and helpful.not possible. you would need a new motherboard to upgrade from 2 to 3.Quote from: wragh on April 06, 2010, 02:46:32 AM
not possible. you would need a new motherboard to upgrade from 2 to 3.

Did you even read the thread ?Probably not, it's a spammer.Only very rarely will you find a motherboard that takes more than one type of RAM
the performance difference on your machine would be almost none anyways.
Just max out on DDR2, you'll be fine

Solve : Internal harddrive trouble installing?

Answer»

Okay here's the deal... i BOUGHT an internal harddrive thinking it was an external one. I can't return it. I want to try to use it but when I opened my computer (something I am not completely new at but don't know EVERYTHING) to install it I hit a problem. I guess the harddrive is a bit outdated and requires a "40 - pin, 80-conductor IDE interface cable". I know what this is but my computer which is basically brand new (less than a year old) does not use a 40 - pin, 80-conductor IDE interface cable. I want to know if there is some sort of converter or way I can use this harddrive; I don't know what the new IDE connecting cable is called for the new computer so I am not sure what to BUY a converter for. The computer I have is running windows 7 and has a Pentium Dual-core CPU E5300 @ 2.60 GHz 2.60 GHz processor. It is an HP. The model is 'HP Pavilion p6110y Desktop PC - NY429AA'. The harddrive is a Western Digital EIDE Hard Drive. it says WD2500JB WD Caviar HD. You should look for an EIDE to SATA converter. Ebay probably has more than a few on sale. Check with your local electronics/computer store, they might carry them.

Hope that helps. You can buy an enclosure if you want to use that hard drive as an external. They're PRETTY cheap. both of those suggestions seem pretty solid, thank you very much guysyeah, get an external usb2 type enclosure. I would personally go demand that they let you do an exchange for a SATA drive. Get a manager, and be a jerk. Sadly this is the best route

Solve : 0x000006ba - print spooler problem?

Answer»
The print spooler will not stay on, and when it gets restarted and something tries to print the error 0x000006ba comes up saying the print spooler is not running. And another error window comes up with "spooler subsystem app stopped worked and was closed". When I right click on the printer the 0x000006ba error window comes up.

The computer is running Vista home basic and the printer is networked using a jetdirect device. All of the settings in the computer are correct, the address for the printer is correct and the computer can get online. I just can not get the print spooler to stay connected.

I checked online for this error but all of the fixes say to use regedit, but the key they say to change is not there. When I try to add a printer the 0x000006ba error window comes up.

This is for a realtor so printing is a priority.

Please can anyone help on this?

Thanks
When you restart the spooler are you setting it to "automatic", by right clicking on the print spooler service and clicking "properties" ? Try this if you haven't done so, yet..Hi, YES it is set to automatic.

There has been progress though. The computer is apparently sharing the printer for the whole office. I rechecked the wiring and found that someone had replugged the wires incorrectly. Redid it correctly and now the other COMPUTERS can print, but not the one that is doing the sharing. The printer shows as Offline and when I right click on it there is no option to use Online. If I select Use Offline then Offline appears next to the printer twice.

Of course the computer doing the sharing belongs to the Boss so if the Boss isn't happy...

Thanks again.I wish I was more handy with printers..

Is this a USB printer ? Try unplugging it from the host computer for about 30 sec., plug it back in and wait for windows to detect it again. Then go back and restart the print spooler.. Try printing again.

If no joy, go in control panel, "classic mode", open up "printers". Is there a check mark on the printer ? This WOULD indicate that the printer is set as the DEFAULT printer. If not, right click on the printer and select, "set as default"... Try printing again.I have unplugged the printer, unplugged the jetdirect device, restarted the computer, set the printer as default and it still had Offline next to it.

But you know, it just occurred to me to ask, why is it being shared if it already has the jetdirect attached? See what stepping away and having a good meal does for you?

If the printer already has an ip address then the other computers should be able to print to it without going through the bosses machine. Her problem is still there so bring on the ideas. Thanks
Ok, so you're using an actual network printer, not a shared printer. I wasn't sure what you meant by Jet Direct. sorry

So now the other computers can't print to it ? ?
No, the ip comes from the JetDirect Print Server device. The printer is usb and plugs into the jetdirect which is plugged into the router. There is a computer that can print, others can not, including the one that is sharing the printer. If I can get the other computers to print directly using the ip address then I will only have the bosses machine to worry about. Can't do anything until tomorrow afternoon, just want more ideas to take with me when I go there.I'm really confused.

Just for the record. If the printer is NOT networked through the RJ 45 port on the printer, then the IP address, doesn't matter.

If you want to connect all the computers to the printer through printer "sharing", that's another ball park.

Which method do you want to use ? TCP/IP or Shared ?

What are the Operating Systems used on ALL computers ?

Sit back and I will tell you the setup starting at the printer.

USB printer plugged into the JetDirect by THE USB CABLE.
JetDirect plugged into the router by Cat5
The router is plugged into I believe a cable modem
The other computers are plugged into the router

The JetDirect provides the ip address so that a printer WITHOUT an RJ45 port can be used on a network.

For some reason the guy that originally set up the office shared the printer through the bosses computer.

All other computers in the office have that printer set as their default.

So, the printer is shared even though it has an ip address from the JetDirect.

Which is why I was wondering why it was shared.

But that is all irrelevant since the printer still says OFFLINE. That is the problem, that is the question. I have gone through what I know should WORK in order to get the printer online but that has not worked.

How can I get the printer online? If I was in your position, I would delete the printers from each computer, in control panel, and start over. Once you do that, reinstall the drivers for the printer on each computer, then go through the process of configuring each computer to connect to the network printer using TCP/IP. Just go to the "add a printer" option and go from there..

Here is a guide that I think will help.

http://www.technipages.com/vista-install-printer-via-ip-address.html

Maybe someone else has some other suggestions..

It would help if you listed the operating systems used in the network.Quote
For some reason the guy that originally set up the office shared the printer through the bosses computer.

So, it used to work and has now stopped. Is that right? What changes did you make right before this started? Tried doing a system restore yet?I'm not really sure if this is the right approach. Someone correct me if it seems illogical.

I'd start out with removing the printer drivers on the computer with the error. Perhaps remove the printer share as well. Reboot and see if you can get the print spooler started without the drivers for the printer you are having trouble connecting. If you still get an error then try using system file checker.
sfc /purgecache
sfc /scannow
reboot

If you don't get an error then try reinstalling the driver, but don't set up the printer share again. I'm pretty sure all the computers will be able to print using the IP address of the directjet device. Configure all the computers that need to print with the IP address in the properties settings under the tab "ports". If the computer can ping the directjet device and no restrictions are set such as firewall or allowed devices then this should work.

Not sure how this WOULD apply to me, exactly. The only EXTENDED, unproductive argument I've gotten into in the forums (not off-topic) was with Geek-9pm, and in the end, one of my suggestions was what fixed the problem the user was having. I'm generally very passive @ CH

chriscool was specifically referring to situations LIKE this, that get out of control. And there is no doubting it was heading that way. It's not a single persons fault.i think the problem is the sound card, you should check for new updates and visit the manufacturer's site for help and support. disable the onboard audio to see how it works. if it still not working you should try a DIFFRENT sound card.

@Allan, you have a great forum. i was surprise to see that you got "Haitian Creole" LISTED in the language translator on your site. love it.

Solve : No Display On Monitor !!?

Hi All,

I have a P1V 1.7 GHz Computer, which is having a failure in Display. The System seems to be running, but no display on the Monitor is visible. Infact, I did check the MEMORY and Monitor, but there dont seem to any problem with them. However, I did remove the Memory and started the System without any Memory, the System ran ... but did not even beep for no memory installed

Meantime, I should also say that there is no single beep on switching the Computer
which is normal. It seems to hve a problem, but unable to identify the issue.

Could anyone of your GURU's help me how to sort this problem, Please.

Thanks & Regards1) The system cannot operate without memory (ram)
2) Did you check the display on another computer?
3) Did you try a different display on your computer? Thanks a Million Sir for your Prompt Response.

Yes .... I have 01 GB of Ram Installed in the System. Infact, I have check the Display on another / and my own Computer, but the same problem persists.

As stated to you EARLIER. I did remove the Memory from the Slot and started the System. But there was no beep from the Computer indicating that the memory
was not installed, could this be that the Motherboard is defective and not giving
out beeps Or could it be that the Processor is Defective and not working !!!

Looking forward to your Expert Advice, Sir. Thanks

Best Regards

Best to finish Allan's advice and perform testing steps 2 and 3. This way you can rule out the monitor as being defective or not.If you've tried the display on another system and it doesn't work I'd guess that should tell you something. The display is shot. Thanks .. However, kindly be informed that the Monitor is fully working as I checked it on another Computer. So the Monitor is not the Problem

and about how long will either one last me?Laptops aren't CPU upgradeable very easily (if at all). If you're happy with the computer, you could add some RAM, but don't expect a huge difference.
It really depends on what your computer requirements are (internet, school, gaming, etc).
New laptops are so inexpensive (relative to 5-10 years ago), it's just not cost effective to put much money into an older one.thanks, yeah mine is only 3 or so years old but i got one of the more cheaper ones, some at best buy are only 400ish that are 3 times better then mine!i'd just go for a new laptop to be honest. LESS of a HEADACHE than getting new parts and not that expensive these days.Clean up your old laptop and sell it to help cover the cost of a new one....

Solve : New build Problems :(?

Answer»

Hey,

Would be awesome if someone could possibly help me out with my new build.

I got it working yesterday, installed XP, loaded everything and it was working fine. However, after a while it just started going really slow and this morning it took about an hour and a half to boot and another hour to start working at a decent speed. I also got the blue screen of death yesterday, I just put it off for 10 mins then loaded it again and it seemed fine.

The only hardware that isn't new is the HD which is quite old I think. I took it out another computer.

I can give you all the components if needed.

Any help would be really helpful.

Thanks,

AlanPost the entire BSOD including the gibberish...

Is there an OS installed on the old drive ? ?I don't know how I'd get the info of the bsod cause i just turned it off and back on again when it came up.

I installed a fresh XP yesterday as I thought that would run faster than vista or 7, guess i was wrong

I turned it on there and it was loading the windows screen for about 15 mins so i just restarted it and went into the bios.

I can post any bios info if that would help.

Thanks for the reply.

To display the BSOD go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery...un-check "Auto Restart on errors"...

Also try powering down and disconnecting the old HDD...does it boot NORMAL then ?Thanks for the reply.

I tried to get into windows but its just taking too *censored* long to power up. From the windows loading screen I left it to load, came back about 45 mins later and it was still on it, so I dont think getting into windows is an option.

Its so weird because I havent installed any programs bar firewall/virus. Only COD modern warfare 2 which i was playing yesterday, and suddenly it wont load up without taking hours.

Would it help if i took out a ram stick, currently i have 4 gig but xp only goes to 2gig, if thats right? Could that be overloading something maybe?

I'll try dc the hd but the os is installed,on it if that makes a diff. I'll post back once IVE disconnected it and tried to power up.

Thanks

Ok soi disconnected the hd and at start up it says "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

Since Win2K you can't simply swap a drive with XP in one machine from another...
It's looking for the other machine's hardware...

As you may or may not know the ATi Radeon 5000 series has some 64-bit Win7 issues. People with Gigabyte motherboards have solved the problems with a BIOS update. I have an old ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe (deluxe meaning that is has built in wireless that doesn't work), and I was wondering if a BIOS update COULD solve my problems. Now I realise that there is a risk to this and no guarantee that it would help in any way (apart from giving me access to newer processors & maybe fixing the wireless).

That's why I've never bothered updating the BIOS before. Why a shop anyway?Because it's not a chore most people can do...even with moderate soldering skills without frying a Motherboard...Erm.. why would I remove the BIOS chip unless I expected to destroy it with the update? Also aren't they seated in a socket to prevent damage when they are installed? Solve : What psu is good for my pc??

I read from a source that the psu needs 8 pins.Any standard ATX PSU will work....
Power consumption i'd GO around 600W or better if you plan on an upgrade down the road...I WOULD recommend getting one from a big brand such as OCZ, Akasa, Antec, FSP, and more. Stay away from the ones in boxes that simply say 600w PSU on them.

Name brand ones are likely to last longer, have better connectivity and have quieter fans.Ok thanks. Now would I have to install it within the pc itself? I've heard of ones that you keep on the exterior. Not a good idea...Enermax 525 Pro82+ should be enough, if planning upgrade (add second graphic card) go for 625 version of this one.Every non-economical build I've done contained a PSU from PC Power & Cooling which is part of OZC. I've owned two of those rigs for over 6 YEARS and have not had any power related FAILURE from either of them. They are quiet and provide more than adequate stable power. The models I purchased were rather heavy, big heatsinks, which can be used as an indicator of quality aside from actual performance.
