Solve : Please help me with my video...?

Answer»

I INSTALLED a nvidia vidoe card and the S-video is only in black and white. What do I need to do??? ThanksUse a color tv

Do you have the LATEST drivers and Nvidia control PANEL?fat_basterd21 is almost wrong. Here is some questions for you:
1. Is your TV colored?
2. Do you USE the nVidia drivers or the Generic drivers in Windows?
3. Is your TV a HDTV? If it is, use a DVI to HDMI converter and a HDMI cable. It is an hdtv. Other devices using svideo are working properly

Solve : cpu/fsb ratio?

Answer»

Why does it increase system performance when the cpu/fsb ratio is low or 1:1?

The most common answer I've heard is that the cpu does not have to "wait" on other system components so the system throughput is higher...but why? I can accept that the cpu won't have to wait on other components with a low ratio, but I can't help wondering why. What is the reason? I figured out why I'm so confused...

For some reason I thought that the "ratio" everyone refers to is between the FSB and the CPU, where the ratio is really between the RAM and CPU.... and ideally it should be 1:1 I don't know how I figured it the way I did before...

So then what if the RAM is 500 MHz and the CPU is 1000 MHz ( 1:2) ...for example

The cpu has to wait for data from the ram, but would that SLOW down the system throughput?

Almost. The most common RAM today is DDR2. In your example, that means that the 500MHz DDR2 RAM is really operating at 250 @double data rate (or x2) to equal 500.
The Intel CPU talks to the motherboard at x4 (I don't remember why, MAYBE someone can help us both out ), so the fsb in the bios will be 250 (250x4=1000).

In this example, the CPU and RAM are at 1:1. Quote from: Aardobard on July 14, 2009, 08:45:38 AM

I think what you are referring to is quad pumping the cpu

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumping_%28computer_systems%29

I should have been a little more specific too... I believe cpu/ram ratio refers to the memory bus speed and the Internal cpu fsb speed... If the external fsb is 100 MHz, then 100 X 4 = 400 MHz would be the Internal cpu bus speed. Then if your DDR is 200 MHz, it would equate to 400 MHz, making the ratio 1:1

So, in your example the ratio would actually be 1:2, unless I interpreted it incorrectly.
Your RAM is running at 500 MHz (250 x 2) and your Internal CPU BUS is running at 1000(250 x 4) .................thus, 1:2

I copy and pasted this from another forum... I think this is likely the issue with speed when the ratio is something other than 1:1..

"I think the idea stems from bottlenecks.. Think about having 100Mhz bus of Memory that was sending things to and from the Processor that was also running with a bus of @100Mhz.. You'll have a very SMOOTH flow of information.. Now if either of those numbers are different things can back up.. think of a traffic jam.. It's not that the information won't be processed, but it's the slower of the two numbers that will end up being the speed that the system can process that information.. either the CPU is running faster and it's just sitting there twiddling it's metaphorical thumbs waiting for the memory to send it something to do, or the memory is running faster than the CPU and the memory has a line at the grocery store with 20 people in it waiting to pay.."

Solve : Freeze on Windows Start Up?

Answer»

Hello: I need some HELP. Our computer starts normally until it gets to the Windows 98 start up page. Normally, this page pauses a few seconds, then our desktop appears. However, the Windows page is freezing and the start up is not going any further. However, it looks and sounds as if the computer is still "thinking". The blue color band still runs back and forth across the bottom or the Windows 98 screen, etc.

We had been having some CRASHES while on Explorer in the last month or so, and we recently had RoadRunner installed - but that's been running fine.

This problem happened last night right after we downloaded some Virus updates for our virus software (reputable, purchased software).

Any ideas on why the computer is stuck on the Windows page?

Thanks.

lslsblI´ve encountered same KIND problems with my 133mhz Intel, and changing the hard drive and re-installing windows helped. The hd was filled with bad sectors.
There can be many reasons for such freezing...Please Read This First - Viruses & Spyware

Scan for viruses, spyware and trojans.Fix Windows is starting up freeze

Ignore all SUGGESTIONS about registry fixes. They are just selling gimmicks.

The problem usually is due to back sectors in your hard drive. I fixed the freeze by buying a new hard drive and cloning my C drive to it with Acronis True image. Make sure to clear your OLD hard drive. This thread is FOUR years old.5......

Sorry. Almost

Solve : Help with a weird resolution problem!?

Answer»

I bought this 32" 1080p television, and set it up to my PC. I set the resolution to 1920x1050, and it was working fine for about half an hour until BAM! It won't work in that res or anything near it. I'm CURRENTLY in 1300 something, and it doesn't look too good in a TV that has a max res of 1920 that can't USE the max res.

If anybody has any possible ANSWERS, I would appreciate it very much.Does your VIDEOCARD support those resolution? have you checked SCREEN refresh rate?

Solve : Computer turns on, no beeps, no monitor signal.?

Answer»

No, i dont have another PSU atm, which is why im trying to find a SOLUTION to fix this PSU before i have to go out and buy a new one, almost POSITIVE the problem is the "POWER good" message malfunction from the PSU which i hope is fixable but i cant find anything on it through research. To avoid needlessly purchasing a PSU you could always take it in and get it checked.

If you aren't comfortable checking your own PSU with a voltmeter then most mom and pop shops will check them for free.in the region i live in, the nearest one is about 3 hours AWAY, ive looked into that also, which is why im trying frantically to find a cure for this problem, its happened once before but all i did was take my PC apart and put it back together piece by piece and it WORKED, tried it this time, didnt do anything. Very confusing problem counting on how i cant even get to the bios screen. I'm sorry man, at this point all that I can suggest is the PSU. Unless you have a voltmeter to check all of the connections with that's all I can suggest.do you know anyway to reset the PSU to the point where the "Power Good" message will actually get sent?If the PSU is bad then there is no way to reset it.Alright man well, i really really appreciate you trying to help me and thanks for the suggestions, guess the only way out is to buy a new one.

Solve : Color Code help?

Answer»

I am huckinh up my Power Button from my Power Switch to my Motherboard.

I KNOW that whenever I SEE a Plug with a Red and Black wire say the Power Switch the Red = Positive and the Black = Negitive.

But my Hard Drive Led Plug has a White and Blue wire and the Reset Plug has a like a Red and White.

Can you help
Witch one are negitive and Positive when it comes to Plugs with White and Blue wiresLook for a small triangle embedded on the wire lead connectors to position the motherboard connector pins correctly...Look for pin1 to be labeled on the motherboard as a small "1" embedded either to the left or right of the group of pins....Guessing is OK when CONNECTING a wire to a connection......if it doesn't work no harm is DONE.......You can also get this info from the motherboard documentation.

Solve : Will a AGP 8X card work in a 4X slot??

Answer»

I have a PC which I want to upgrade. The specs are:
Intel PENTIUM 4 1.3GHz on Intel D850GB
512MB RAM
Intergrated Sound
nVidia Geforce 2 GTS AGP
3Com 3C509TX
CD ROM Drive
Windows XP
(Not Ready for Vista and Win7)

After the Upgrade, it will be:
Intel Pentium 4 1.7GHz on Intel D850GB
512MB RAM
Intergrated Sound
nVidia Geforce 5200FX AGP
INTEL PRO/1000 MT PCI ethernet adapter
DVD ROM Drive
Windows XP
(Ready for Vista and Win7)

I was wondering if a AGP 8x card will work in a 4x slot, and if the GeForce 5200FX is a AGP 8x, or 4x, or both. The AGP card should work no problem. As to it being a 8X or 4X I have no idea. When I build a system for someone or update it 9 times out of 10 I use the parts they want, if they bring me the parts. On my own I build from the best I can get or afford and try each out. Just my 2 cents. It will run at 4X....
You need to be sure however it is at the right voltage....there were 2 i believe.
It needs to match the MBoard output.Quote from: patio on July 14, 2009, 07:45:24 PM

Voltages were automatically adjusted by the motherboard. As I recall, a resistor on the AGP card. Yes, there are two voltages and some other voltage difference on the signals. All taken care of automatically by the motherboard.

Learned this on a motherboard that would not support the 8x video card. We even looked at those voltages and signals with a O'scope. Found absolutely nothing wrong. However the manufacturer discontinued that AGP card only a few MONTH later - without comment.

Appreciate how these CARDS are manufactured. Video manufacturer may test them on every motherboard they can find. And yet this particular video controler which worked in ANOTHER system just would not work in that system. We can only guess why it was discontinued quickly. They did not discover a signal anomaly until after in production. Tolerance for AGP signals are so tight that sometimes a perfectly good video card will not work in a perfectly good motherboard. It

As long as that controller mates easily in that socket, it *should* work.
well, cards that use the 1.5v spec and are installed into a older motherboard that uses 3.3v can damage the motherboard... Of course almost all 3.3v cards were keyed different from 1.5v cards, so you can't usually even physically insert the card.

Regarding the motherboard that wouldn't support an 8x card; was this just one specific 8x card, or would no 8x card work in that machine? 8x is newer then 4x and likely requires different logic. Of course if other 8x cards worked fine then it was likely as you said, a signal anomoly.

Solve : moving HP hardrive to a Dell??

Answer»

Read the first damned post where the OP explained there is a Dell and a HP. These are two different computers. Only one has a broken cpu. The one that is perfectly fine has no recovery disks.Sorry fat, that opener is a bit confusing.

I'm gonna scratch my brain a bit on this one.The HP and the Dell will use two different sets of drivers and won't be compatible.

Will the Dell boot without the HP drive connected? If so then it is probably a matter of the jumpers on the hard disk.I am going to try to take a picture of the part I am referring to. There is a black "frame" for lack of a better word and there are two metal clamps that go over that frame and the HEATSINK and fan mount on top of that with screws- the CPU is on the backside of the heatsink and plugs into a socket on the mother board with the black frame broken I used two zipties to hold it on to the socket attached to the mother board.....it seems like one pin is about half as long now but not all the way broken off and there are a few slightly bent pins....its very hard for me to see this TINY part....this is the CPU Correct??

[attachment deleted by admin]That is the CPU, but if it's damaged you won't get anywhere with it. Are you trying to boot from the other drive or get the defective machine to boot?my goal was to have one working desktop computer out of the two computers without having to buy any expensive parts- its not looking like that is a possability. I was hoping that I could just put the HP hardrive in the Dell (which has a bad partitioned hardrive that I removed) but I should have known it wasnt that easy. I was hoping that they were compatible. OK now where can I buy a cpu with the black frame? Any suggestions for an old part like this its a pentium 4 from my HP Pavilion a465c I am obviously not that computer literate and am trying to fix this with very limited fundsSo the HP has the damaged chip, and the Dell has a drive that won't boot. Is this correct?correct the HP with its shiny new power supply now has a bad cpu due to my error and the dell will not boot the hd that is in it due to partitioningI would write off the HP unless you can FIND a new CPU for it. The Dell will not boot with the HP drive due to driver discrepancies. Do you have any boot disks for the Dell?no boot discs for the dell at all-I got into its hardrive by partitioning the drive and reloading windows with my HP Recovery disks (YES on the Dell) it worked for what I needed to do I had been presented with a blue screen computer and formating was out of the question- didnt want to lose all of his artworks files....just FYI I am self taught so this is a bear for me to figure out when things crash Is there another computer that you can attach the HDD to to recover the images?I handled that issue and moved the images to another computer with a flash drive, I dont have another computer to restore all of my files from the HP. his images were on the dell and I moved them to his two year old HP desktop. With no restore discs for the Dell I cant format the HD but if I did will it still be partitioned? I ask stupid questions I know, but I try not to format hardrives they lose years worth of info.Chances are that if you try the reinstall with the wrong disks that you will destroy the partition.

I would recommend PUTTING the valuable disk into an external USB enclosure and recovering the images that way.

Solve : after clean install: PC cant find 2 internal HD's?

Answer»

had a SEVERE attack from win32Heur virus/trojan and decided for a clean install. Went well, but I saw that the 2 internal hd's werent recognised....is it POSSIBLE that the virus has infected the motherboard? In the bios I see changes too, no 2 internal hd's, c:\ is all of a sudden first slave and dvdrom primary master...need some tough advise...are so fed up with it....got the infection back again and have only visited MS update...

specs: AMD Athlon 64, 3200+, 3Gb RAM, XP+SP3, XP FIREWALL and AVG free version 8.5. D-Link wireless adapter...IE8 It is extremely rare if possible at all to get an infection in the BIOS so i doubt highly if this is the case here.
Did you remember to re-install your MBoard chipset drivers ? ?
Try HOOKING up one of the internals to another machine to see if they are recognised...yup, updated the lot...somebody told me to do something with the jumpers, put them all on cable select??+++well, case solved....disconnected the HD's and was looking for the jumpers, easy but more pins than I liked, so I connected them all again to look on the net for info on these WD HD's and when started up, the chip said: found 2 more HD's...lol

What bothers me is why this happened...I had some attacks from win32 heur virus but everybody tells me that is no MB virus...anybody any idea? Somehow the jumpers were changed at one point in time...yeah, by a GHOST? Billy Gates' ghost???.. hahahahahahahaha. , sorry but that doesnt HELP...hahahahahahahahaha

Solve : Weatherfax programme won't recognise the modem hardware?

Answer»

I have an old but perfectly functional weatherfax programme (Easyfax) which runs fine on my laptop (winXP) on the boat using my SSB radio via a modem and 9pin connector with adaptor to the USB port. I now have a netbook (also winXp) and want to use the weatherfax programme on this – it installed ok but it doesn’t recognize the hardware when I PLUG in the signal and Device Manager doesn’t show it. The programme provides a list of 4 com port selections plus auto, none of which work. How do I go about getting it to recognize the modem? Something to do with allocating a com port? But please don’t blind me with techno – I’m still at the learning stage and I’d like to avoid the distinct possibility of solving the problem by hearing a splash!Problem resolved! But since no-one seemed to be interested enough to assist, I’m not going to tell anyone how I did it !!Be that way then...colm, I would like to suggest another alternative to your "no one seemed to be interested". It could be that your problem was so specific to a situation that not many of us would have ever encountered that "if" such a knowledgeable contributor even does exist they may not have come along YET to have tried to assist you. Having been on this forum for a number of years now (i note that you are a very recent arrival-and of course we all extend a warm welcome to you) it has been my experience that members really do try awfully hard to assist others with their computer issues. Sometimes all it takes is a little patience. I can only speak for myself but knowing how a problem was solved (even if solely by the original poster) is a learning experience and may provide knowledge that i can use to assist others in the FUTURE. Don't you agree that is what forums should in large part be about. Good on you that you were able to RESOLVE your issue.truenorthOK – guess I expected to provoke a reaction, sorry. You folk were falling over yourselves last query I had (and so much appreciated!) – but seeing the current problem disappearing onto the third page was almost unbearable and I was losing hair! I apologize and will make amends.
Problem: getting my new netbook to recognize a modem connected via a 9pin lead and an adapter to USB port. Device Manager was only showing ‘Other Devices’ (not ‘Ports’) and the ‘USB to serial cable’ had the yellow question mark!
SOLUTION: after advice from the manufacturer of the software, the yellow question mark was the relevant point. Lack of the correct drivers for the adapter (not the modem) was the problem – finding which ones ran the programme on my other laptop helped and I subsequently found new drivers from the manufacturer of the adapter. These I downloaded, copied on to the netbook, and helped it to find them when re-installing the adapter. Bingo!! I believed it had to be some simple solution but, not being a geek, was losing sleep as well as hair. Sorry again for my impatience – I surely will never have a problem with the computer ever again :-)
colm, Thank you for the detailed explanation of your found solution.Sometimes we are lucky and it is that simple. Sometimes they never get solved. I can appreciate your frustration as time was passing with no apparent assistance occurring. I have a post on the "Apple" forum that is months old and have had basically no replies to my questions. However there does not appear to be a great number of Apple users on the CH forums and to be truthfull i (even though i own 4 of them) very seldom use them. I guess Bill has been very effective. Again good on you for finding the solution and thanks for sharing it with us.truenorthWell i remember our initial quick success regarding your first issue...
Possibly why i didn't take well to the offhand comment this time around.

No harm no foul.

Just remember what's been done.

Solve : Graphics Card Not being detected?

Answer»

I need help, at first all was fine, but i kept on not being able to play a certain game (fallout 3) as the game abruptly crashed completely and i ended up back on my desktop. So i updated my Nvidia drivers. . .still the same problem though, i then got the blue screen of death with an error saying that an infinite loop had occured with one of my DISPLAY drivers, so i re-installed the game, when i ran it the game froze and the PC crashed so i rebooted, and my moniter tells me "No signal" so i took off the case and restated once again same problem and all the hardware looks functional even my graphics cards(Geforce 8600 GT) FAN is turning, so i plugged the screen into the onboard graphics adapter and managed to search for graphics cards in my PCI slots first then default to Onboard graphics adaters(Thank you Foxconn ) but same problem. So i disabled my onboard graphics adapter. . .same problem. I need help Re-install the original drivers from the CD that shipped with the card...I tried but when installing the drivers the application said that it could find no corresponding hardware and will now close. . .so i cant , anything else cause i only BOUGHT the PC two weeks ago.
Return it...SIGH i hoped it was fixable. . .i will thanks for the help anyways

YOu WOULD need to reenable your video card, if your still using the on-board as you described in your first post.

You must be running from the video card for the software to find it.

Solve : Do you have a PC still using RDRAM??

Answer»

Almost nobody has RDRAM memory in their PC. I have it in one of my PCs. Do you?I've never seen RDRAM for real, and I've only seen people say they have a machine with it a handful of times. On Amazon.com, it is only $5 for a NEW 128MB memory stick (Or at least on May 22, 2009).
The URL is http://www.amazon.com/Generic-128-RAMBUS-RIMM-Memory/dp/B000068IL3/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247598566&sr=1-2 but my memory was grey.I've seen quite a few older PCs with RDRAM. Upgrading their RAM can be a pain:

1) The STUFF's expensive (usually--thanks Neelchauhan for the link to cheap RDRAM!)
2) It has to be used in pairs. Unlike DDR(1/2/3) RAM, which CAN be used in pairs/threes to ENHANCE performance (Dual-Channel or Tri-Channel), RDRAM will not function on an odd number of RIMMs.
3) The unused slots have to have TERMINATORS in them.4) it's patented. And is NOT an industry STANDARD.

Solve : ARC FIRMWARE?

Answer»

It would appear that each time on boot it attempts to boot from Floppy A:
When I press F8 and go into the disk boot section and change it to boot from
ST340014A [Hard drive] (40.02 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 5JX99PPP, rev 3.06, SMART Status: Healthy

It boots up OK then for that occasion but each time I reboot I have to follow the same procedure and change it from Floppy to HD.ST340014A

Once I change it to the correct boot drive it should hold there until I change it but it is reverting back to Floppy A each time I reboot instead......regardless Have you tried resetting your boot device in the bios?

Is your clock keeping good time?Yes, but I should be able to preference in order the boot sequence in the BIOS but I am unable to move any of the preferences up or down.

Yes my clock is keep good time.If your clock keeps good time then it's not the CMOS battery.

I'm gonna scratch my head on this for a bit.You are able to GET into the bios?YES and the MB is MSI PM8M-V

but I haven't been able to get any FEEDBACK on that.Just a hunch, have you tried disabling the FDD in the BIOS?What is the FDD pleaseSorry man, FDD=Floppy Disk Drive.
It's usually assigned as drive A:\Quantos, Thanks a million man for coming to my aid, we've had a lot of lookers but you was the only one that showed up and kept at it long enough to get my brain juices working.

When I was first contemplating getting into computers about 5 years ago at 68years of age I really wondered then if I should accept such a challenge after attending my very first computer class. These things shouldn't be a household item as they are too complex and subject to a multitude of failure syndromes.

However, I did embrace the challenge and have learnt enough on the way to keep me from those "experts" that set up shop to take your money and with help from guys like you I am "eventually able" to overcome most problems.

You got me THINKING after going into "boot menu" and then BIOS I DECIDED to "pause" through the boot sequence and analyse what was taking place.

From that observation I changed aroud the HD cables on the MB and everything is honky dory now or so it seems.
Don't know what went wrong with the settings but it boots straight into the correct drive now and the OTHERS are operational also.

We could list this problem as SOLVED......thanks for your help.

Solve : bad sector in harddisk?

Answer»

recently i FOUND my pc get not booting. it SHOW some missing or corrupt in windowsroot>\system32\hal.dll file.and instructed reinstall a copy of file. i consults my vendor he say" there r too many bad sector create in u hard disk. so my question is
(1)is it correct diagnosis?
(2) how to avoid to create bad sector in hard disk

Welcome to the CH forums.

1. Run your hard-disk manufacturer's DIAGNOSTIC program - see here.
2. Bad sectors can just HAPPEN as any disk ages, the surface breaks down eventually. If your disk is fairly new you should check on the warranty period and make a claim against the warranty if you can. Best advice is to make sure your backup is up-to-date.

Good LUCK.

It doesn't seem like the modem isn't working, it seems like it can't connect to the server, because the server isn't available.

To where are you trying to connect? I know you're trying to ACQUIRE network time, but through what site?Probably the failure was due to Modem's inability to connect to DNS Advantage SERVERS!

Must have heard about the same? Nevertheless, Iam now on OpenDNS!

Solve : Question about cross fire.?

Answer»

I am looking at BUILDING a new computer using the I7 Intel CPU. All the boards that I have seen support cross fire. My question is can you use any two of the same video cards or do they have to say that they support cross fire? It seems that most ATI cards support cross fire. Nvidia has no mention of it at any price. Thank you much for your help.Crossfire is an AMD/ATI technology, lets you use more than one AMD/ATI card together. Nvidia's equivalent technology is called SLI. You cannot use an ATI and Nvidia card together in Crossfire or SLI, only cards form the same manufacturer. Nvidia cards MUST be the same model, I'm not sure about ATI cards but I think they're more flexible - do check on that. Performance will be limited by the slowest card in either case.

Hope this helps.Thank you for your reply. I don't understand how 2 cards work. I mean you only hook your monitor to one? How will two cards help? The two cards are connected together internally with a bridge (at least, with SLI they are, and I'm fairly sure Crossfire is but not 100% sure off the top of my HEAD). They then share the processing between them, and output to the monitor through whichever card is connected to it.
The rendering methods are different, but they can share the work by rendering alternate frames, different parts of each frame, etc.
The performance boost isn't 100% as there are OVERHEADS and restrictions, but in some games it can come close to that.

Hope this helps.Yes, that was very helpfull. I was just looking at a board that will hold 3 cards. That seems a BIT much to me. I really thought that two cards was a bit much. I mean if one card will work to play a game then why would you need two. Then you just explained it to me. Very good thank you for your reply and time.for the one with three... I'm not even sure if SLI and crossfire supprot that...

but if they do three would have the same benefit, (although less pronounced).

Of course you don't ALWAYS need to put a video card in the slot.3 way SLI and Crossfire, and even higher, are supported and available, but not on all cards and boards/chipsets.
Generally multi-card solutions don't scale very well past 2 cards, as not all games even scale or support 2 cards.
As BC rightly says, just because the board and cards have the capability doesn't mean you have to use it, it's just another upgrade option should you want it.To add, Crossfire does work with two different cards. However, all cards involved in the crossfire setup clock down to the slowest card's specs.

With that in mind, I'm not sure anyone would want to crossfire 2-3 different model cards...

Solve : Monitor not receiving signal from computer.?

Answer»

Previously I had an old 80lb 22 inch monitor!! I recently decided to replace with a 20 Dell flatscreen. when I plugged in my new flat screen, I get the "No Signal From Computer" msg. I thought maybe it was because my computer is about 5 YEARS old-built by a friend and maybe the Dell Monitor needed specific drivers, etc. for it. So I replugged my old monitor in and it won't work either. I just get a loud irritating-piercing "Beep" when I try to reboot. Since I can't see anything on the monitor -I don't know what is going on. I have hooked up another older Dell Monitor I have and I get the same problem. I have checked all the montiors-hooked up to another computer and the monitors all work. Could I have a bad connector for the monitor on my computer- bad video card- bad MOTHER board? It seems strange that my old monitor was working fine-I just wanted a lighter weight flat screen and when I tried to replace-it broke!!

Please help me. I am a die-hard scrapbooker and all my pictures on are my computer and I can't get to them...Thank you. When switching monitors, was the computer on?To be honest-I'm not sure-but it probably was...Does this make a difference?Since no other monitor wants to work, it looks like something happened to the video card.
Is it on-board video, or dedicated card????I'm not sure what you mean- but a friend built the computer about 5 years ago and it is what he installed.Look at the back of your computer. In which area is the monitor connected?

Sorry for the delay in replying-since I can't use my computer I don't check my messages elsewhere as often as I should. My monitor is connected in Area 2Then, you have real video card. Most likely, you need new card.
They're cheap, and easy to replace.I have an eMachines, and have the same problem, but my monitor was installed directly to the monitor inlet on area 1. I installed a new video card (Area 2), and still get the same problem. If there are any other suggestions you, or anyone else has. Please, post them. I would like to get this thing up and running. Thank you. ><>IT Student

This is what I do know about my pc, the motherboard is AMD Duron and had 512 of RAM. I tried to replace with 2G of Ballistix DDR3 RAM. Still won't work. I'm pretty SURE the site you got help on told you what I'm about to tell you:

DDR3 RAM does NOT work on an AMD Duron motherboard!!!!

AMD Duron boards use one of three options:

1) PC100 SDRAM
2) PC133 SDRAM
3) DDR RAM of some flavor (NOT DDR2 or DDR3, just DDR)

Either way, go to http://www.crucial.com to find out what RAM is compatible with your board (if you haven't already)...

I don't think you need to reformat your computer when installing a new processor.

I'm not an expert, but you just need to remover the cooling fan, remove the old processor, insert the new one, add a small pea-sized amount of cooling paste to the bottom of the fan and replace, then see how it goes.Quote

Oh no, DO NOT PUT GLUE ON YOUR COOLING FAN!!!

There is a substance designed to get into the tiny bumps on the surface of the fan base called thermal paste.

You can get some from any major computer store PRETTY cheaply or from here: ClickQuote from: Animefan on July 17, 2009, 03:19:55 AM

Solve : Computer speaker?

Answer»

hi,

I've got a set of 5.1 speakers running on my pc, but the subwoofer is a bit rubbish. Heres a link to the speakers i have.

https://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/Computing/Communication+Solutions/Speakers/PC+Line/PCL-51001/619346

I also have a subwoofer from a DVD system lying around downstairs, so i was wondering if there is any way of connecting it to the pc speaker system to replace the rubbish one?

any help would be highly appreciated, thank you Cut and splice if needed. Only problem I see is the computer speakers not having enough power to run the sub. An alternative would be to replace the speaker in the rubbish one. Usualy you can buy them at raido shack ect..shaan94, If your 5:1 speakers are powered which i feel very certain they are and if your audio controls can adjust the various qualities of the 5 speakers. Again given that your sound card can utilize the 5:1 speaker set up i suspect that it can. You may be able to compensate and get relatively better sound than the speaker you are now using. I would say try it and see. You really cannot hurt anything but as the previous poster advices you will probably need to modify the plug for the speaker jack output on the speaker cable. goodluck, truenorthThank you very much for your help fatbasterd21 and truenorth

the 5.1 system is powered, but the power cable runs from the current sub (the rubbish one), so if i take that off there wont be a power supply.

Ouch--but not necessarily a limitation. You could by opening up the sub woofer enclosure (if you can) remove the internal connections that goes to only the subwoofer speaker and solder the replacement sub woofer in it's place. truenorthSo all the wires from the speaker goes into the sub? Is the other sub from the dvd system the same way?I agree with trunorth. Your going to want to open both up and try swapping out the speakers. But it still may not work. Impedance and wattage can be different. But I doubt the computer speakers have more wattage than a sterio speaker.Quote from: fat_basterd21 on July 19, 2009, 11:09:53 PM

Impedance and wattage can be different. But I doubt the computer speakers have more wattage than a sterio speaker.
This is correct.
The main thing you dont want to do is to replace the current speaker with one of higher impedimence.
2 Ohms resistance speakers will over tax a system with a lower impedimence of 4 ohms or 8 ohms. If your current speaker is 8 ohm, do not INSTALL a speaker with a higher 4 or 2 ohm rating.yes i too was somewhat concerned with the aspect of impedance but thought that with the newer technologies in both stereos and computers this might be less likely.truenorth
P.S. While it is not my field of expertise is it not also possible that if the impedance is too high it could be reduced? Then i guess it becomes a question of how far one wants to go just to try and use another subwoofer that is on hand?Did anyone else THINK it might not fit either? Anyways, when you take the speaker out it usually says the ohms. It is OK to replace the speaker with something of a higher impedance, but the wattage will be reduced, thus not as loud.Computeruler, Yes essentially that was the point i was trying to make at the outset--that because of the 5:1 ability of his existing sound card that the variables of the controls with the associated software would possibly make compensations effective to offset the wattage limitations. I guess we will only get to know if the O.P. actually goes ahead and tries it and tells us the result.truenorthProvided it will fit theres probably 99% chance of it working. However the quality and life of the speaker will be determined by it being the proper speaker.Quote from: truenorth on July 20, 2009, 07:34:38 AM

I'm not aware of any technology that adjust automatically, (this may be available), although some systems that run 4 ohm (for instance) are 2 ohm stable systems that can handle the increased resistance in that case.
A resistance load can be increased simply by wiring 2 speakers of lower impedimence either in series or in parallel, (there is a formula for determining the load in these cases), or adding a resistor into the circuit, but I know of no way to decrease the ohm rating of a speaker without modifying the vioce coil which takes ADVANCED equipment or a person who is EXPERIENCED in speaker building.Quote from: computeruler on July 20, 2009, 10:54:30 AM
Did anyone else think it might not fit either? Anyways, when you take the speaker out it usually says the ohms. It is ok to replace the speaker with something of a higher impedance, but the wattage will be reduced, thus not as loud.
I may be wrong but I disagree. What happens with any circuit when introduce to a '0' ohm load? (just for example)
The wattage increases to whatever is the maximum wattage available in the supply circuit. Unless the circuit is fused lower than this load, the circuit shorts to ground and is no longer healthy.
I'll post a chart for ohms law pertaining to DC (direct current) voltage which is used in most speaker systems.

AMPS= WATTS÷VOLTS I = P ÷ E A = W ÷ V
WATTS= VOLTS x AMPS P = E x I W = V x A
VOLTS= WATTS ÷ AMPS E = P ÷ I V = W ÷ A
HORSEPOWER= (V x A x EFF)÷746
EFFICIENCY= (746 x HP)÷(V x A)

Here's the key chart for those symbols

E =VOLTS ~or~ (V = VOLTS)
P =WATTS ~or~ (W = WATTS)
R = OHMS ~or~ (R = RESISTANCE)
I =AMPERES ~or~ (A = AMPERES)
HP = HORSEPOWER
PF = POWER FACTOR
kW = KILOWATTS
kWh = KILOWATT HOUR
VA = VOLT-AMPERES
kVA = KILOVOLT-AMPERES
C = CAPACITANCE
EFF = EFFICIENCY (expressed as a decimal)

Yes i've run higher impedimence speakers on several sound systems that were not stable operating as such, but the sound is muddy and the system is overworked. And some of them didn't survive. I'd try it on my 9 year old EMachines but not on my $1500 quad core build. JMOIts not good to run a 2 ohm speaker on a 4 ohm amp or something. The amp expects a higher resistance and dies

note: they operate at practically the same frame rate give or take 1 or 2 fps where i THINK the sli setup should be excelling by at least 50 percent compared to coming the same as the single gpu.
could this be the failure of one of the GPU's?

Solve : Floppy Drive Problem?

Hi peeps, newbie here and i have a problem that i could not find in Forums?
It pertains to my Floppy drive. I recently installed a new 3.5" Floppy drive in my pc.
Although my pc found the Floppy and notified me accordingly, i still can't see it listed in My Computer?
Please can you tell me is there a way to make this Floppy appear in the LISTINGS, or would i need to try another Floppy instead?
So it does not show up as A: ? ?
In the BIOS make sure floppy seek on startup is enabled...
If the light is on all the time then the power connector is backwards.

Also try another ribbon cable.

And Welcome Aboard ! !Many thanks for that Patio.
At the moment it's not showing up as anything. I followed your INSTRUCTIONS, changed the BIOS settings, changed the Floppy drive 3 times, even changed the robbon cable.
I had 3 other CABLES and none would work. Power cable is fine, i8 tried it in something else. One of the Floppy's light's would not switch off but i could not reverse the power connector.??
Looks like i gotta dud lol
Many thanks for that Patio.

Solve : Accessing hard drive on dead laptop??

Answer»

My Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop will not start. I PRESS the power button and absolutely nothing happens. I took it to Best Buy (GEEK Squad) and they tested the power adapter and the BATTERY and said both are fine, so according to them the problem is the motherboard.

I had been planning to buy a new laptop pretty soon anyway for various reasons, so I'm not terribly concerned about my old one dying, but I do need to retrieve several recent files on my hard drive that had not been backed up yet. The Geek Squad guy said they COULD do this for me for $100, but that seems like a lot to pay just to retrieve a few files.

So my question is, do I have any other options? What exactly is the process for retrieving files when the hard drive is (most likely) fine, but the computer itself has no power and cannot start?

Sorry if this is an obvious question, I'm new to this! Thanks in advance... http://www.wikihow.com/Recover-Data-from-the-Hard-Drive-of-a-Dead-Laptop

Please do take look at above link, it details how you can get the functional hard drive to read on a different computer since you mentioned that your laptop is not WORKING but the hard drive is not broken.Another thing that you can do is take the access cover off where the hdd is and then get a enclosure from like best buy or something and hook it up that way. it would be a usb hdd enclosure I have one and it works greatGet one of these:...2.5# laptop to IDE converter...

Solve : Bluetooth Dongle Not Working?

Hey,

Alright, well i know what the initial response is going to be, but I bought a Bluetooth USB adapter off ebay cheap and it's not working.

There's tons being sold by everyone, all exactly the same, so i figured it would WORK, and I still figure it should work. Whenever I plug it in, HOWEVER, it says "USB Device Not Recognized". It's suppose to just be plug and play so I don't know that it has any vista or xp drivers to download, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm just wondering what I can do to get this to work, I haven't used bluetooth before so I figure I'm probably missing something.

If it's destined to the garbage I'm wondering if anyone knows of a cheap bluetooth adapter that i could buy that they know works well. Preferably for Vista although XP would work.

ThanksSeller was of no use, I don't think he even really read my email.

I tried it on another computer, for some REASON expecting it to work, it didn't.I think you should use a driver for this. I saw those auctions too and they say "No driver required."
Check http://www.downloadatoz.com/driver/type_Bluetooth.html for it.
In the auction page, they told a lie and it said "True Plug & Play in XP and Vista."

If you don't want a driver, install the latest service pack and try.The PROBLEM is there is no indication of a manufacturer so i can't search for the proper driver.
I just figured with what must be literally hundreds of ebay sellers selling these that they must work and someone must know how.In another thread on this forum, the poster was able to download a driver from the computer manufacturer's website, and it worked.

You might try that, please.I'd love to, but once again

Then again, what games are you playing? If they're fairly modern and/or you're playing them on resolutions higher than 1680x1050, you NEED something MUCH better than a GeForce 7300GT...I'm only playing games which my system configuration passed. Solve : I suppose I'll build another. Sister stole my Core 2 Quad Build.?

Answer»

She asked to borrow it (in my specs and sig) 3 weeks ago and now she won't give it back.
So with the $ she is donating, and my funds, I suppose I'll build Core i7 system in the next couple of weeks. I've got plenty of research to do in the next WEEK but I'll have questions and am appreciative of any suggestions on CHF, as usual.
I want to build one this time that will do most anything lol. I suppose I'll try to limit the cost to under $2k but I doubt that will stick after I start ordering.
But I'm not RICH so I'd like to selet the best values at present rather than pay top $ for the latest, ungodly PRICED toys. I'll post back in this THREAD as I get more info and thanks for any CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions.

Solve : HELP needed with case wiring?

Answer»

Hi All!

QUICK question--How can you tell what is the positive and what is the negative sides of the HD LED, RESET SW, POWER SW connectors of the case switches that plug into the board?

I'm putting a new motherboard in my old Chieftec Mini Dragon case and I can't find the info on it.

The connectors do have a "triangle" on one of the ends, but I don't know if that means anything.

Thanks,

Look for a small triangle embedded on the wire lead connectors to position the motherboard connector pins CORRECTLY...Look for pin1 to be labeled on the motherboard as a small "1" embedded either to the LEFT or right of the group of pins....Guessing is OK when connecting a wire to a connection......if it doesn't work no harm is done.......You can also get this info from the motherboard documentation.

http://books.google.com/books?id=sg4O8HzNbZIC&pg=PT228&lpg=PT228&dq=header+pins+not+polarized&source=bl&ots=APQhdnCWF9&sig=KBWqK78jqrd783WApw943LRjeAw&hl=en&ei=EWhmSrbVJIKwNrPV4ZcB&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8

Pages 204 -206Generally, white is negative, and the little triangle on the connector is positive. on a STANDARD panel, the connectors are in this grouping ::::. where it goes:

'pow led''power sw'
'HDD led''reset sw''extra pin'

In this order

+- +-
+- +- . therefore the triangle should always go to the left.

By the way, the LEDs are also Diodes, so if they are backwards the first time, nothing will short because no current can flow.

The switches are non-polar, which means they can go on either direction.

Please note the last pin is just there to provide a 'key' mechanism to SHOW you where they go.Quote from: Fireborn on July 21, 2009, 06:41:13 PM

...
If you reverse the LED, you won't hurt anything, it just won't "light up" when it's supposed to. Switches have no polarity, so it doesn't matter.

Solve : GPU Temps Too High????

Answer» HEY ya'll!

Just upgraded my system from the processor up and I'm pretty happy with it! However, I'm a little worried that my video card might be running hot. I'm using a BFG GeForce 7300 GS 512 MB with the stock Nvidia GPU FAN. Both Everest and Speedfan show my GPU TEMPS at AROUND 65C idle and as high as 78C load. Is this high for that card? I've done some research and found conflicting opinions. I trust the members here and would appreciate your advice. Should I consider an aftermarket GPU cooler?

Also, I have a 3 fan 5.25" bay mounted intake from my old system that I haven't installed. Is it worth the effort to install it in the new system? I'm currently set up with the stock Intel CPU heatsink/fan, a 90 mm rear exhaust, a 120 mm side intake, and the stock Nvidia GPU heatsink/fan. Should I install the front bay fans, or would it be a waste of time and load on my PSU?

Thanks for your input!Congratz on the system upgrade, you seem very pleased with it. It would help if you would let us know more about what you have running in your computer and also what case you use.

For the GPU: I skipped over that series of cards, so I have no experience with them specifically. GPUs tend to run hotter than what CPUs will tolerate. 78C is a little higher than what I'd personally like to see on load, but many people report temps that high or higher without short-term effect. If the card gets too hot to operate properly, you will begin to experience anomalies ranging from artifacts to crashes. It doesn't sound like that's a problem for you at this time.

If you are able to manually set the fan speed, that's the simplest and easiest way to bring GPU temps down usually. The trade-off is noise. I find that a)ambient temps affect idle temps more than load temps b)idle temps are suspect and of very little real value unless they look more like load-range temps.

As far as adding/changing/removing fans in your case, do it. Play around with it. See what kinds of changes happen with your case ambient temps and experiment to improve them. Air flow, volume and turbulence all CONTRIBUTE to ambient temps which in turn affect idle/load temps.thanks for the tips! I installed the bay fan setup and it looks like it lowered the GPU temps by like 2-3 degrees C... I know every little bit helps!

Solve : lenovo 8808?

Answer»

hey guys im sorry if this is in the wrong topic

im using a lenovo 8808: intel dual CORE, 80gb sata hdd, 1gb ddr ram windows vista

it was on ebay then it bsod... now when ever i power it up it just bleeps im thinking it either the ram or cpu any advise guys (its my mums pc it has no anti- virus)If it shows nothing on the SCREEN and it just beeps, you're right thinking that it's a hardware issue.

Try and listen carefully to hear how many times it beeps. Usually you can FIND the beep codes for different laptops on google.

If you're having trouble with that, try taking out ram and see if the beep CODE changes. It could even be something as simple as reseating your ram.thanks but i just cleaned out the case and changed the HEAT paste and its fine now Glad to hear you got it working.

I do not need HD or any over the air stuff. What type of card do I need? Can i buy two single TV Turner CARDS, and have each record a show if necessary, or does it not work like that? Do I have to buy a dual turner?

Let me know a GOOD dual tv tuner card if you know of one.

Solve : Is it the graphics card or the game??

Answer»

Greetings,
I recently installed Halo Combat Evolved on my son's computer. It played fine for about 8 hours (he played Halo and WOW later - both worked as expected) but then... the next time he logged on the computer (just logged on like normal) the monitor screen started acting odd... displaying random colors, nothing that was normal. Now, he's 13 so of course he called me. I tried restarting the computer and then went into Safe Mode. Everything seemed to load fine, so I went BACK to normal mode. This time, the screen looked like digital firecrackers at low resolution - multi colored squares all over. Then the monitor went out. Knowing that we have another plug in on the video card, I replaced the cable and PLUGGED the monitor into the second slot for the vid card. The monitor came on but it was digital rainbow again. So, thinking it's the monitor, I unplugged the monitor and plugged in his TV to the computer (to the 2nd vid slot). It seemed to boot just fine. However, and this is probably my problem so tell me if I'm crazy please. I heard that if the resolution or anything is screwed up on the TV, that the TV MAY actually 'break' - that's per Sony and I don't know what it means but I don't want to 'break' the TV by using it incorrectly as a monitor. Now his computer is plugged back into his original monitor and I have the same problem - digital rainbows in multiple squares on the screen. One last thing; after the computer boots, the monitor scrolls a bunch of line of text too fast to read. It never did that before. I know you are going to want the specs of his computer, and we built it ourselves so I have to find them. I cannot pull them off the computer because the screen doesn't work. Am wondering if this is COINCIDENTAL with the installation of Halo or if it sounds like the vid card or worse - the mobo.
Thank you.
-KristyI'm going to go out on a limb and say that the problem is, indeed, the monitor. Otherwise, the problem would have happened with the TV or any other monitor you use (unless you're using the same monitor cable)...

As for whether or not your TV would "break" using it as a computer monitor, that depends:

Is it an HDTV? If yes, then it's not a problem using it as a monitor. In fact, an HDTV is little more than a large computer monitor with speakers and built-in TV tuner(s).

If it's not an HDTV, then it depends on how old the TV is. If it's an SDTV or EDTV, then you may be okay (although the resolution is limited to 720x480 in NTSC regions--not sure about PAL). If it's older than that, then you might have problems...Yes, it is an HDTV.

ANd I am still looking for the computer specs. The system is 5 years old if that helps.Hi again,
I just plugged the computer in to the HDTV and everything seemed to work fine. It automatically adjusted to the correct resolution and everything. Then, about 5 minutes in, the screen fell into smal 1/4 inch waves. Then, the signal was lost. The computer continued to run (fans on, etc.) but the TV flashed "No Sugnal" and wen dead. Does that mean it's the vid card? I used a new cable for the TV too, just FYI.Hmmm...well I guess it's not the monitor then...

Does restarting the computer clear up the problem?

Also, try updating the video DRIVERS.

nVidia card: http://www.nvidia.com
ATI card: http://ati.amd.com

If that doesn't work, then I would guess video card at this point.Thank you so much for you feedback!
To answer your question, yes, the same thing happens after restart.
I cannot update the drivers because I cannot see anything on the screen before it fades to black.
It is nVidea Card and I know the processor is Pent D with 4 GB memory; Western Digital Caviar hard drive... that's about all I can remember.
My 13 year old is driving my crazy now (should I install WOW on my computer for him... Hmmm... another interesting issue)..
So you think it's the vid card yes?
It's definitely the video card at this point...Thank you Bummer that but at least now I know. Too bad for my sanity though One last thing:
THe vid card would not have had anything to do with installing HALO, right? No, it didn't.

A general rule of thumb with computers: correlation does not always equal causation.

In plain English: just because two things happened at the same time doesn't necessarily mean one thing caused the other. Quite the opposite of the fictitious Uncle Larry. If he's around and the punch disappears, chances are he drank it all, such is the calibre of his gluttony.

If Install win xp pro onto a 320 GB Hard Drive am I right that by Default every Clutster will be 4 kBQuote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 15, 2009, 09:59:59 AM

Homework?
ANYONE?google it, before you ask. That might save you time than waiting. A One minute google search certainly beats a 24 hour waiting period for somebody to answer.I was on Micosofts web site looking at the NTFS and how it works.

And the Smallest Cluster it SUPPORTS is 512 Bytes.

And the Default Cluster size is 4 kB

And it makes every Cluster size as big or small as it needs it to save space.

I get this so all the Clusters are not one size but what is the Max Cluster size that NTFS can support???I keep looking all over the net and every web site tells diferant things for fats???OK I think I have it and how FAT 16 / 32 work.

This is what I am GOING to do and what I want to do can anyone tell me if I am on the right Track?

I have a 320 GB Hard Drive and I am just going to use it to Install win xp pro and all my other Programs.
This Hard Drive will not have anything on it but win xp pro and all my other Programs and will not be used for Stoage at all.

So when I Install win xp pro I was going to make the NTFS make every Cluster Size 512 Bytes.
All of what I have been reading says if you are going to use a Hard Drive for just INSTALLING Programs to go for the Smallest Cluster Size for Performance.

And then I have a 500 GB Hard Drive that will be used for Storage of Audio and Video Files that are like 8. GB in Size.
And I was going to Format this with NTFS as well and I was going to make every cluster size as big as it can bee.

Is this the right way to do thisQuote from: kpac on July 15, 2009, 10:10:17 AM

No... not really... Cluster size has very little IMPACT on performance. Definitely not enough to even warrant thinking about changing from the defaults.

Solve : LCD tv used as monitor & tv. Color spiking/overly bright?

Answer»

First, we tested on another LCD tv and the problem is the same. SEVERAL weeks ago when using tv as pc monitor excessive light blue would OCCASIONALLY appear. That went away and it changed to a bleached out look. Changed the VGA cable and it made no difference. Tonight we got both problems at once. The set up has worked with no problem for over a year with no problem. VIDEO card bad? Any help would be appreciated. It could have fried the input on the TV, leaving the set fine for other inputs.

LCD TV's do not all like having computers or consoles ATTACHED. It depends on the set.We thought that might be the case and tested on another tv. Same thing happened. What output options do you have on your video card?VGA. Is that one of the options? It's a three year old system so there is no hdmi. Do you have the option for S-Video?

Double check your resolution as well, you shouldn't drive it harder than 1024x768, UNLESS it specifically states that it can handle a higher resolution.

Solve : No Picture???

Answer» HEY. I just finished building my first computer earlier today and was preparing to boot it up. I connected my video wire to my monitor (which does work fine, i'm using it with my laptop atm) to the back of the desktop and turned it on. Everything started up and was whirring and such, but I got no picture on the monitor, even after waiting for a minute or two. Is there any way to troubleshoot this? I plugged a normal, and an HD cable into both the ONBOARD video, and my video card. What am I doing wrong??

If you guys need it, I've got an
ASRock M3A780GXH motherboard
and an
MSI GTX250 video card.

It's nothing to do with my motherboard shorting out either, as the CPU off it runs fine. I just can't get a picture. Thanks for the help.Check your monitor to video connection.Switch monitors if you can. It's not the monitor.. I'm using my laptop right now and I plugged it into the monitor.. it works fine. It's gotta be with some sort of wiring problem.. but I really have no idea what I did wrong. Is this a on board video or a card? It's with both. I tried just my onboard with both cables, and I tried my video card with plugs in onboard and the video (separately). Nothing works. Nothing's shorted out either, I just plugged it in and everything came on. I tried with and without the video card plugged into the motherboard as well.TRY a monitor. This is a hardware issuecheck your power connections>24 pin main>and the 4or 8 pin12v to the board.I've been messing around with a lot of different wire combinations, so I'm just gonna unplug everything and start over again, following the MANUAL as closely as possible. In my eyes there's nothing I did wrong. It's a little confusing.Alright, CPU works now. I get a couple beeps when I turn everything on - but still no picture from the onboard video. I took out the video card and haven't put it in yet. Should I try that?
