Solve : Black, yellow screen of death??

Answer»

So RECENTLY I don't know what happened, but when I try to play CS source the screen turns black. There's no sounds or anything and the computer doesn't seem to respond. Even if I play warcraft 3 and if I minimize it turns into a yellow screen. I can use the internet and almost anything else except play games. I just bought a new graphic card thinking it was the PROBLEM, but after joining a GAME in CS source it STILL gave me a black screen. My computer also seems to have problems starting up as when it powers on the screen doesn't show anything, it only works after a lot of retries.. I don't know if its the motherboard or something else that could be wrong. Thanks for the help.

Solve : Audio Mic Problem?

Answer»

Hello, recently today i bought a mic for my computer. It has the 3.5mm audio jack, which i plugged into my computer mic socket. But the problem is, the computer hasnt detected the mic, and it DOESNT work?

is there anything i should do, or know about , to get this mic working?except perhaps for fancy high-end SOUND cards, no special detection is present.

There are only two things to check. USING the Volume CONTROL (sndvol32) select options->properties, and choose "recording". Click OK.

now make sure the Microphone input volume is not muted or too low.

Verify wether the microphone works by checking if sound recorder can record sounds.

If not-

Is it plugged into a front Microphone jack? If so, try to find one on the rear of the computer.

Solve : Audio card?

Answer»

I have a motherboard with BUILT in audio. It however lacks two outputs for front and rear speakers for my speaker system. I decided to install a sound blaster live card which has the necessary outputs. Installation went fine, connections are correct, and WINDOWS (XP) tells me everything is working fine but alas, no sound. Can you think of anything I am overlooking or will my motherboard just not allow me to use a sound card?any errors in device manager?
Does the onboard still work with the new sound card installed? If so, then you may need to DISABLE the onboard in BIOS.No errors in the device manager. The onboard does not work with the new sound card installed. DM lists the creative board with the latest windows drivers. But I never thought of going into the bios to disable the onboard audio. Does that normally have to be DONE? I've not EVER heard of that. The new card should disable the onboard when you plug it in, so that's probably not your problem.
you did run the drivers disk that came with the card right?
Are you sure they are XP drivers?
Have you checked the manufacturers website for updated drivers?
Do you have another computer that you can test that card in? The card may just be DOA.
Do you have another set of speakers you can try?No I let windows install its drivers. I have been on line for a while researching the drivers (even though I have the disk) and all the recommendations were to use the windows drivers. Maybe they were wrong. I will try that next. I am afraid, however, they may not be xp drivers on the old disk. Speakers are AOK. And lastly, no, I can't swear the board may not be Dead, you might be right! Well then, now I have some ideas to take different approaches to solving the problem. I thank you very much JJ and in the morning I will try again and let you know what the problem was if indeed we have solved it. You've been a great help! Good nightAlways use the manufacturers drivers when installing a new card. Make sure they are written for your operating system. Does the disk say it is compatible with XP? Check the card manufacturers website for xp drivers if not.Creative no longer has the drivers. I will search for them elsewhere on line. The card appears to be from 1999. Maybe I'm just playing with too old of a card but again, maybe not. But I will start there. Thanks again!

Solve : graphics card/ power supply help?

Answer»

Hello, I'm in the market for a new graphics card and these are the TWO im deciding bettween (unless someone has a better sugestion).

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4035113&csid=_21

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4185301&csid=ITD&body=REVIEWS#tabs

I'm leaning towards the GeForce 9800 because it seems to have MUCH better reviews. Can someone please give me a second opinion, it would be much appreciated.

I'm also going to need a new power source and am not sure what to get. I was considering this.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276573&Sku=ULT-LSP650

What does everybody think? Thanks in advance! The 4750 is a better card...
The PSU is not something i would choose...
Others may have more opinions here on this issue...how much better of a card is it? is it worth the $50?That would depend on what you are expecting out of your vid card...i can't decide that for you...alright well ill definitly think about it...what do you think about this power supply?

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3482959&CatId=1079

do you think i will need more than 500 watts?thanks patio for the help. i was searching and i found this card which seems to bee in between the 2 cards i was considering earlier.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3482895&csid=_21

do you think this is a good buy? is this better than the 9800 i was looking at?
I'm also wondering if there is a difference between the GDDR3 and GDDR4 cards because the 3870 is a GDDR4 card.
thanksNewEgg has the GeForce 9800GT you were looking at for cheaper and it comes with free COD 5. Just thought i should let you know.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130380thanks jungalo but unfortunatly im from canada and can't get that deal. it is slightly more expensive on the canadian sites. The 4850 is quite a lot better than the 9800GT, an the 3870 is worse than both.
I'd say it's worth the extra $50, myself.
That OCZ PSU is good also, but I would recommend a slightly higher wattage supply, such as a 600W, for future UPGRADES.

Solve : Storage hard drive not recognized?

Answer»

Hello,

I just completed changing my 2 hard drives from an older system to a newer PENT D bare bones kit. I did the recovery process on the old OS to update XP. XP is up to date. I installed my storage drive which I have had no problems with. The Bios does not detect it. I changed cables, change IDE ports but it just doesn't do anything. All I did was unplug it and move it to the NEW unit. Its a Maxtor 5T020H2. I have had it about 3 years with no problems and no noises. I even transferred some of my files to it incase I had to perform a total restore on the OS drive. Any ideas? I even put it bak in the old unit just to see if I could hear it run or to see if the Bios would recognize it. Nothing. It's definitely the drive but what could have happened? Can it be recovered?

Thanks, TimHow are the hard drives jumpered, are you sure they are jumpered correctly? Do the hard drives use IDE ports(PATA), SATA, or SCSI? If it's PATA and you're using the same ribbon cable than you need to make sure that hard drive with your OS on it is set and jumpered to master, and that your secondary drive is set to slave. They are ATA IDE Ports. The jumpers are set on master for my OS which is working and no jumpers on the storage drive I am having trouble with. I set the jumpers to slave and even tried the IDE port used for the CD drive. There is no ACTION at all from the drive. Not even the cycling when first started.Unhook everything on IDE2 and hook up the HDD jumpered as master and connected to the end CONNECTER of the IDE cable.
Power up and enter the BIOS setup and see if the drive is detected...if so run autodetect on the drive PressF10 to exit and save changes,
Theb after Windows boots see if the drive shows up in Explorer...
If the BIOS does not detect the drive this way then the drive is probably dead...Ok, I have tried that and the bios will not recognize this drive. I tried it in another computer and nothing there either. I will have to look into recovery of the drive. The worst part is when I was putting the bare bones kit together I transferred all my documents to the storage drive to protect then should I had to reformat the OS drive. I guest I need to get an online backup service to depend on. HIND sight is 20/20! Thanks for your assistance!

Solve : Fan not spinning??

Answer»

Hello. I have a HIS ATI Radeon 4650 graphics card and I'm haveing a problem with it. When i turn my pc on, the fan does not start spinning, so I have to open the case and manually give it a push until it starts moving. It is a real pain because if I FORGET to puch it, the gpu will over heat and my pc will shut down. What do I do?Sounds like the fan may be failing, or it's not getting enough power.well, it was working fine the FIRST few days, then all of the sudden when I turned my pc on, the fan started honking.-literally. So that is when it alll started. When that happened, I had to open the case and had to push the fan in the middle a few times to make it stop.

Solve : Digital camera installation disk not installing (because of size of disk).?

Answer»

I have a hp COMPUTER (from around year 2000). It has windows xp, and the front of the cd drive says - hp cd-writer / DVD. I checked this site on how to get info about the cd drive, and this is what my computer says -

Drive - E:
Description - CD-ROM drive
Media Loaded - no
Media Type - CD-ROM
Name - COMBI RW16x10/DVD
Maunfacturer - (Standard CR-ROM drives)
Status - ok
Transfer rate - not available
SCSI Target ID - 0
PNP Device ID - IDE/CDROMCOMBI_RW16x10/DVD_______H1.0_____\563532F4......
Driver - c:\windows\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys (5.1.2600.2180(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158).48......

The problem is that the disk for my camera's installation software is SMALL. Only half the size of a regular cd. But, my drive is for regular cd sizes. I put the little one in, and it gets knocked around and won't start.

What should I do?

Also, is it possible to buy a drive that will work WITH my computer to use the small cd. Or would it be cheaper to buy a new laptop that will able to work with this cd and other programs that I might need in the future for school (like photoshop, word, ILLUSTRATOR, powerpoint, and lots more).

Also, I'm a little familiar with computers, but no where near an expert so please put your responses in beginner terms for me, lol!

Thanks for reading.Take a look at the link to a picture below.
There is a bid circle on the cd TRAY for a regular sized cd.
Inside the big one there is a smaller one for the small sized cd if your cd drive has that smaller cicle put your cd in that and it should work.

Solve : What is Built in WiFi??

Answer»

I got a COMPUTER for christmas and i wanted to know all the components about it, such as the built in Wi-Fi
can someone explain to me what it is?
It means you have wi-fi built in and you don't need to add it.
WIRELESS INTERNET connection (already there)so then i wouldnt need a router or any of that?
also can it take it and use the internet anywhereYou will need a wireless access point to use wi-fi. So if this is your home network you will need a router with wi-fi capabilities. And your ISP depending on the provider, people correct me if I'm wrong, but I think AT&T has a plan where you can access wi-fi almost anywhere in the country(U.S.).oh THATS cool
i actually have At &T
il give them a call and inquire about it

thanks a lotyou just need to GO to the store and get a router and hook it up to your interent its pretty easy

Solve : tv tuner card?

Answer»

Happy Holidays Everyone. I have been having a difficult time with a TV tuner card I purchased from dell. It is a Hauppauge WinTv-HVR-1250 card.
It claims to receive 125+ CHANNELS, but I cannot receive channels beyond 100. I would like to get some of the extended basic channels that Comcast has to offer. I installed the card into the PC; attached the cable from the wall into the card; and Windows recognizes it. I did the TV setup in Media Center, but I cannot get the remote to work with media center. I have tried numerous times, but I will not change the channel. My TV stays on channel 4 and the switching of the channels is controlled by a settop box. The settop box has a IR Blaster and emitter SITTING on it. Obviously I am doing something wrong. Did I buy the wrong TV tuner card? Is my configuration and setup in media center INCORRECT? Any assistance will be appreciated. maryhigginsriceyou plugged it in from the wall...is that wall connection from your cable set-top box supplied by your cable provider??? If yes you need to be on channel 3.....

from the specs:

"If you have a digital cable set-top box or a satellite box, the WinTV-HVR-1250 can connect via either channel 3, Composite or S-Video inputs."

check your manual/specs and your setup...

Good Luck
Thank you for answering my post, fgdn17. I do have a digital dvr from comcast cable. I need to record show on my computer because of conflicting time slots. I have set my stb to channel three, but the media remote control will not change the channels. I have researched other forums and no seems to have the answer. maryhigginsriceyou got your answer in one of the other forums where you posted:

re:

You can not get the remote control which came with the HVR-1250 to work with Media Center. Response: Have you seen this from Happauge?:
http://www.hauppauge.com/site/produ...
If you look down this web page to the "Notes" section, it says that the enclosed remote control isn't "MCE certified" and won't "replace the Media Center remote control". You may be expecting it to work in ways that it is not capable of WORKING. Also in those "Notes" is the statement that you have to use something called Hauppauge WinTV V6 application to view QAM channels (that's cable TV). That might also be some of your problem in tuning channels.
fgdn17, I am using the Window XP media center remote. Thank you for your help, but I SOLVED the problem myself. Bye maryhigginsrice.

Solve : Video Card Help Needed for Xmas Gift!?

Answer»

Quote from: paintedhorizon on December 24, 2008, 06:55:14 AM

What about the one Soy posted, would that work?
The card Raptor suggested is a much better card, but the one I suggested will work fine for that game, I am sure.

I still think you ought to try running that game with your onboard VIDEO after installing the additional memory. If it runs smoothly, then save your money. Perhaps you can buy a new computer in a year or two. I saw some amazingly low priced computers in Walmart a few days ago. An emachine was priced at $298; a Compaq was priced at $398; these prices do not include monitors. Both computers had Windows Vista Home Premium. The Compaq had 2GB of RAM.

Didn't even think about trying it after adding the memory! I'll do that Soy!

Everyone have a great Christmas and thank you all again!Let us know how it goes. One thing that hasn't been discussed here is some computer MAINTENANCE that MIGHT make your computer run a little better. Do you use any spyware removal tools, such as Spybot Search & Destroy? You can get it here. I presume you have some virus protection, especially if you use it for email. And, you should always have a firewall enabled, at least Windows firewall if you have not installed a third-party firewall.

And, a good tool to help keep your system running it's best it CCleaner.

If you're using Norton Anti-virus or McAfee anti-virus, your computer may be taking a performance HIT; those programs (some versions/years are worse than others) use more of your computers' processing power than some of the free anti-virus software that's available to anyone for personal use.

I believe you received some CD's with your computer when it was new. Right? Be sure to keep them in a safe place. You can use them to erase your hard drive and restore the computer (Windows and other programs) to the way it was when it was new.

And, Merry Christmas to you! What Soybean really means is "Can I come over for Tea, cookies and a Christmas pressie?"

Raptor sees right through me. I do have Spyboth S&D, and have McAfee protection, comes with my Comcast. And yes, I HATE it! Myswell give up using the internet when it's downloading updates or scanning!Quote from: soybean on December 24, 2008, 11:03:21 AM

I go to nudist colonies.

Of course, no one knows. Not even the nudists. heck, they don't even know their nudists!Well, got my new memory installed, still received same error message. So I guess I do still need a video card.

Solve : What are these folders in my ext hard-drive??

Answer»

I have MAXTOR Basics 500GB which aquired a virus as the USB port was infected, but it has been resolved and has been cleaned since but I have come ACROSS a few folders in the ext hard-drive which wasn't there when I bought it and was wondering if I could delete it. I have screenies of each, SORRY poor they were done in Paint. The top pic is the over-view of my hardrive the unknown folders are the one in random digits.

Are these files alright to delete or compile if there so my E drive is cleaner? Thanks in advance.looks like maybe some sort of backup or something? Those are backup or cache folders for Windows updates.
They can be safely deleted, but you may not be able to - if you can't remove them, use a utility called Unlocker - http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ - to unlock the folders first.
Hope this helps.yay i was right! i new it! and i thought about windows update folders too! i feel specialQuote from: computeruler on December 30, 2008, 01:36:08 PM

And btw, the gap is really a folder isn't it?
I know your secret...haha
alt+0160 and no icon Lol, a folder that if people found me with on my PC I'd get slaughtered, I bought well my parents did a version, but I dled the most recent. Much appreciated that folks, they all deleted simple & easy. haha fair enough fair enough

Solve : Comp problem after reformat??

Answer»

I was recently having small problems with my computer and i hadn't reformatted in a long time so i decided to do so. My Left 4 Dead game worked perfectly fine before the reformat but after it has started to lag and freeze up sometimes. Im looking for advice on what the problem could be. Just some stats.

Windows XP
800w power supply
2GB Corsair memory
Nvidia 9600GT graphics card
ASUS A8N SLI PREMIUM motherboard
Not too SURE of Hard Drive space but it is sufficient i know that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.Start with re-installing your MBoard drivers from the MBoard driver CD...
Re-boot
Then install all your other device drivers.I will TRY this and let you know.OK.it made a GOOD bit of a difference but i'm still not running as smooth as i was before.

Sorry for the late reply i went on vacation. What version of video drivers do you have installed for your 9600GT?not sure whatever are the newest ones on there website.windows has default driver for that kind of VC. I am thinking that your you haven't installed the correct or INCLUDED driver in your VC.
here is what you can try:
1. install you Mobo's driver for its chip sets
2. restart then install your video card.

I hope this helps

Solve : Choosing between 3 cases?

Answer»

Ambient will be measured from the air around the video card, the core is of course the video card's core temperature.
Those temperatures are plausible, and nicely low too, especially the core.
Is the video card FAN on default speed, or have you upped it at all? Lots of questions I know, but just helps me FIGURE out just how good this case is at cooling.
And, you say GTS - is that right? Only, in your system specs you say GTX. Depending on the card those are either quite low, or very low temperatures.
Enjoy Rivatuner by the way, lots of advanced tweaking options there. I use it to control my video card's fan and clock speeds - definitely a very useful program, hopefully you'll find something to use it for, if not now, then maybe some other time.Stock fan speed and it's the EVGA 8800 GTS 512M...Here

Actually i haven't tweaked any of the fans at all since it's been built. Doesn't seem they need to be.
I am however starting to play around with RivaTuner a bit...now that i've figured out how to properly save the hardware profiles for fast switching...a fun tool indeed.

I'll run some more stress-type tests and post some temps for reference sinci i can GET them all now.
Can't understand why SpeedFan won't do some GPU's but Riva is probably more accurate anyways.

Seeya.

P.S. Edited Specs...Thanx.Thanks for the info.
I'm going to work on a FAQ to automatically control fan speeds with Riva, I used to sue a profiles based method but now I use a much better automatic system that's not very well documented, but is already in the program.
I agree it's odd that Speedfan can't grab your GPU temps, but Riva is a better program for that IMO, as it's got so much more FUNCTIONALITY relating to the video card than Speedfan.Good deal,
I look forward to seeing that.
Most of my time lately has been on customer's machines...i haven't really had time to finish setting up the New Build the way i want it but all good things are worth waiting for...Update/,ega bump: I ended up grabbing an Antec 900, just spent a few frustrating hours moving my system.
Partly my FAULT, but the lack of documentation in certain areas didn't help.
I grabbed Akasa fans to replace the LED Tri-cools and left the 200mm on top. Nice and quiet, very sturdy, and I like the look of it except for the window and remaining LED. My GPU is now 4 degrees cooler under load, which means the fan doesn't spin up as fast, so it's quieter - a definite result.
Edit: also, because it's now on my floor instead of my desk, if I open a window the cool air goes straight in. I opened it for a minute or so and my GPU dropped another 3C.

Solve : L2 cache increase?

Answer»

I have an Intel P4 2.4ghz/512kb L2/533mhzFSB. If I were to upgrade my cpu, COULD I go to a higher L2 cache? Such as 1mb or more. Will it make much of a differance?
TomIf your motherboard supports the specific CPU you want, then yes, you will be able to.
L2 cache can make a large difference in some apps, and none in others. How can I tell if my motherboard is compatible for more cpu L2 cache? This PC is 6 yrs old Gateway E-4000 with intel D845GRG board and 845G chipset ICH4. The bios has limited CONFIGURATION settings. I done put 1G of memory from 265mb works pretty fast with that but I get some hangups on apps. and stuttering FPS on high end games. I also upgraded to a Geforce PCI 256mb video card which blows away the integrated 64mb grafics. Think if I would get a faster running cpu it would run the games better.
Below is a link to my board specs. if anyone would like to check them out.

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d845grg/Looks like the best CPU you can get for that board is a Pentium 4 2.8GHz, with 512KB of L2 cache and a 533MHz FSB, which wouldn't give much of an improvement.
I think the problem here is more likely your video card, there aren't any high performance PCI gaming cards and even if you had the best one available, it's still more likely to be the cause of slow performance than your CPU.Ok. I had seen that on the PROCESSOR compatibilty page for my board. But I also found more info that my chipset would support Hyper Threading. I found a P4 3.06ghz cpu with the same speeds and L2 with HT, 478 socket that I was TOLD would work. But not sure of the info source. If Intel themselves, the manufacturer of both the board and the CPUs you're looking at, say it won't work, then I'd be inclined to just stay with that.
A faster CPU may well work, but if it doesn't then it's wasted money.

Solve : Power Supplys help?

Answer»

Useful addition BC_ - thanks.

Makes me think I should REFER to a rail output current as not only MAX - but the critical word would be "sustained" - because as you say peak very short term surges usually can be tolerated.

Overall tho, as with any power delivery system - keeping demand well below the unit max potential is always desirable - thus the reason for over rating when choosing what power factor to install. It should increase unit life and run that bit cooler too.Ok I think I am getting the way Power Supplys work and how I sould read the ratings.

I am GOING to have a lot of Hard Drives inside the PC and I came up with the Total Wattage for them is 18 Watts.

Now when I look at Power Supplys I see one Output Rating for + 12 Volts at 60 Amps
12 X 60 = 720 Watts
So I thought that will be more then I need for all my Hard Drives.

Then I remembered that I need an ATX Power Supply and they give - 12 Volts I think???

I just wanted to run this by anyone that can help???What I should have asked is Power Supplys give 3V 5V and 12V

They are all = Volts or they are all - Volts

ATX are all - Volts right???Quote

Ok I think I am getting the way Power Supplys work and how I sould read the ratings.

I don't think this is true YET...OK I think if I tell you ware I am getting my Information about Power Supplys then you can help me more.

I when to wikipedia.com and looked up Power Supplys and they say this?

The Intel CPUs ran on 3.3 Volts and the ATX Power Supply Standard supplyed three Positive Rails + 3.3 Volts + 5 Volts and + 12 Volts.

Then the Pentium 4. came out and used + 12 Volts from a connecter called P4.

Then they say all new Computers run everything off the + 12 Volts and they added more + 12 Volt Rails. Ok I get everything so far and this is why I see a lot of Power Supplys with say three + 12 Volts and eatch one has a diferant Amp Ratting.

Do I have all of this right??

Hahahahahahah - he's doing it again - hahahahahahah

Have a look at this lot not so long ago...Ok I just when to PC Power and COOLING Web Site and I see a lot of pecs for Power Supplys that have 2. + 12 Volts and 1. - 12 Volt

Was I right about what I found on Wikipedia about +12 Volts is for MOTORS and Drives and not everything needs +12 Volts.

And they added more +12 Volts because everything needs it??

I posted on past thread keeping to brevity but got blasted for this so here goes...

System is home BUILT ASUS M2N 1394 MOBO, 8500GT graphics card, 2DDR RAM, VISTA 32 Home Prem OS. ZA Firewall and AVG antivirus.

Was SUCCESSFULLY running a V-Gear Messenger Pro webcam on COMPAC laptop with XP OS.

Later I ran install'n disk on new VISTA OS PC then connected webcam via USB and appeared OK. Have SINCE ran update on Drivers (currently 2008 installed). Somewhere along the line the cam stopped displaying picture. Both V-Bee Application software (that came with the camera), and Skype, display a black screen. Have changed camera select on Skype viseo options from V-Gear to ggeneric and then back again. Have tried re-installing V-Gear and drivers but no go. LED on cam lights but no picture.

Any help appreciated - and yes I did search the FAQ's and Forum database.

Are you sure you installed the Vista drivers ? ?
If so in Device manager remove the device...power down and UNPLUG it.
Re-install the drivers and it will prompt you for when to plug the device in...Thanks for that. I re-installed all the NVidia 8500 software using the technique that you suggested and I now have camera and sound - Thanks for your help.No problem...stop by anytime...

Solve : Temps?

Answer»

I was wondering if someone could help me out..Ihave a new Asus P5E deluxe mb and was wondering if someone could TELL me where the cpu temp probe is located? Stuck on 42%c all the time it NEVER changes.Any help would be useful thanks.CPU temp sensors are usually under the chip, on the mobo.

What are you using to read that temp?

If you can lay your index finger on the CPU heatsink without saying "Ouch!" it's ok.

Sorry, not true.

If the Heat sink isn't making contact, then you won't get any heat onto it whatsoever, and your CPU could be burning up at 80 Degrees Celsius underneath

If the temperature doesn't deviate when you stress the CPU, then it is either a BROKEN sensor or the program is not using the right address to read the sensory system at.

Try everest or speedfan to get your temps instead because "PC Wizard 2008" doesn;t sound like a good program...sounds more like malware to me

http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

http://www.lavalys.com/PC Wizard is pretty good actually.
For your CPU, slidewayz, try "Real Temp" or "Core temp" = both good utilities that will give you an accurate temperature reading.
As Kurtis suggested, Speedfan is also good, but the temperature names may be confusing.Quote from: Calum on December 31, 2008, 08:03:35 AM

True, I had to get a config for my board because it mis-labeled my temperatures.

Also, look at the hardware monitor in the BIOS to check CPU temps after the computer has been off for a while and see if it is still the same or if it slowly climbs up a bit.Quote from: Kurtiskain on December 30, 2008, 03:16:04 PM

Solve : can't find portable media player in control panel?

Answer»

I have an hp pavilion a250n running microsoft windows xp. The problem started when I went to open my portable media player, usually found in the control PANEL, to put music on my mp3 player. The device simply wasn't there! My antivirus (wildblue SECURITY center; f-secure)) scanner recently found a virus which couldn't be deleted. COULD this have something to do with the program's disappearance? I just can't figure this out. I thought the media device was integral to the computer's hardware, and to have it just disappear is a mystery. I have looked in the recycle bin and in every list of programs I can THINK of. Any ideas?I would try re-installing the media device's software/drivers...
If it's USB don't connect it until the software tells you to.Thanks very much for the reply. Problem is, as far as I know the portable media player was always there in the control panel and I don't think I have anything to reinstall it with. I will go over the devices I have and check again with their installation guides. In the mean time I was trying to look into every system file etc...to see where it went awol. Only to find how much more complex this seek and find can be for one only familiar with the computer. However, it does make me want to understand more. Again thanks for the response. No problem and good luck...
In the meantime look for the device on the web and see what the manuf. has in the way of UPDATED drivers and software.
BTW Welcome Aboard !

I want a 3 GHz, is there such a thing as being able to upgrade your Intel Pentium Processor?Check your mobo specs for compatibility and the Intel site for what's currently available esp the socket differences.

mobo specs? Socket differences? Sockets are what the cpus go into. I'm pretty sure your cpu and a standard 3.0 GHz have the same socket, but I'm only 80% sure. Here's my motherboard.

I have SIW, so I can tell you any information you may need.So it's socket 478 on an OC2425 mobo.

Below is a quote from this site:

important is the socket type on the motherboard and i suppose it's a socket 478. the fastest processor that is compatible with this mb is the Pentium 4 Northwood 2.8GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket 478.
this processor does ENHANCE the FSB to 533MHz but has the drawback that the memory would run at its peak speed in case it is PC2100 and will produce more heat (PC2700 ram runs fine on a FSB 533).

I have been in the programming era for quite a few years. But still some questions regarding the internal workings of the computer haunt me.....

I want to BECOME a total computer and an electronics guru......is anybody around here kind enough to guide through the DETAILS regarding how to start.......and go the zenith of my learning for these computers.....

any kind REPLY or a critic will be very happily accepted....

tiwari1988 Actually I should have been a bit more specific about my learning.....normally when we do any sort of programming in the computer.....the compiler or the interpreter converts the high level language into machine language which in turns gets executed accordingly in the microprocessor.I want to know how this machine code gets converted to a series of voltage levels and they get into the microprocessor for the ultimate execution of the codes and to get the desired result.....

and....my second most question is that can we mind meld with any computer hardware circuit to make it work in a way other for which it is designed or made or fabricated....??

suppose can an existent one microprocessor motherboard be made to accomodate more than one or two microprocessors or can a motherboard be allowed to work for other REASONS such as any electronic component....like a any automatic simulation system.Quote from: tiwari1988 on December 05, 2008, 01:46:36 AM

Solve : Where do you buy your hardware??

Answer»

Well I'm currently using a CRT MONITORS for one of me secondary desktops and I want to upgrade to an LCD. I bought my previous LCD monitor from TigerDirect.com and I also use NewEgg.com to buy other hardware. I as wondering if any CH members had any other good places to buy hardware from?i use neweggAlmost exclusively NEWEGG. Ironman,My personal choice is Fry's (if you are in the U.S.). They have both bricks and mortar and online.Even with online sometimes the shipping costs are offset by the no tax consequences.truenorthIronman, with newegg and tigerdirect, you've got two very good places to buy from. So, I wouldn't worry about finding other sources. I've used both newegg and tigerdirect, newegg more than tigerdirect, but I like both.

Other than those two for online buying, I once bought a flash drive from buy.com. Buy.com has a wide selection of computer hardware. And then, I bought a digital camera memory card reader for myself and my mother on amazon.com.

Of course, you could also shop the local retail stores, such as Wal-mart, Staples, etc. I bought my Compaq notebook PC at Staples.

Oh, and, I've bought memory online from crucial.com and kingston.com.Online i use newegg and Micro Center...
Brick and mortar i BEAT up the local Best Buy's Staples and the soon defunct Circuit City for their deal merchandise.
In short there is no one answer.
It's best to decide on budget first; specific components and then price value and Return Policies...I checked out Buy.com and obviously they don't have a comparable inventory to Newegg or TigerDirect because they offer other products than computer products, but i did find a good deal for a 17" LCD under 100 dollars, and the part that impressed me was that most products shipping costs are free! UNLIKE Newegg and definitely TigerDirect who have high shipping costs. And I'm pretty sure they didn't just add the shipping cost to the price already because it comparable to Newegg and TigerDirect. I still have to enquire about theri return polices though, but overall it seems like a good place. Thanks Soybean! im genna tell you a little secret about newegg theres a newegg site called www.eggxpert.com and if you pm the admin jas0n he can accually give you free shipping on some things
newegg doesnt have that high od shipping costs EITHER but tirgerdirect! very EXPENSIVE on shipping. If something on td is cheaper i still buy on newegg cause their shipping offsets the savings. TD has been investigated by the better burery of bisnuess or soemthing like that

Solve : SATA drive problems?

Answer»

Hello everybody!

I RECENTLY bought a 1tb Samsung HD103UJ for my PC and when I plug it in to install Windows XP on it. It always hangs at the SATA drive detection screen. I've been all over Google trying to find a solution. I've updated my BIOS but to no avail.

I've also read a little bit of what is going on. The Samsung HD103UJ is a SATA 3 Interface where as my ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe is a SATA 1 Interface. So that is why it hangs at the SATA Detection screen. Samsung also has a program called ES-TOOL that will allow you to change the HDD to the SATA 1 Interface. But that is my problem I can't get past the SATA Detection screen to change those settings. I've tryed everything from the anonymous jumpers on the back of the HDD to unpluging it then plugging it back in after the SATA Detection screen passes. Anyone else have anymore information would be great!!

-KentYou may have to feed the SATA controller drivers to the installation

You can do this one of two ways:

1) When asked to press F6 to install a third party SCSI or RAID controller, do so. Put the SATA drivers on a FLOPPY (yes, a floppy), and put the floppy in when asked to do so.

2) Slipstream the drivers into your XP installation source and make a new disc:

http://www.nliteos.com/guide/index.htmlI don't want to offend you killerb255 but the problem is that I can't get past the SATA drive detection screen. If I could I would use the Samsung tool they provide to set the SATA drive to 1.5 instead of the factory 3.0. So I guess my question would be is how do I bypass the SATA detection screen (the one right after the BIOS) and still have the SATA drive present-or-detected on the system. So I could utilize the ES-TOOL that Samsung provides? No offense taken.

Ever since I've been here, I've seen many of us (myself included) misinterpret what people say all the time. Often times, it's because we're used to seeing the same problem over and over again and our minds get locked on one train of thought (at least mine does! ). Other times, it's because the person with the issue doesn't explain their problem clear enough...usually saying "It doesn't work," while expecting us to be psychic.

The reason I misinterpreted what you SAID:

Quote from: Kenter on December 27, 2008, 06:38:49 PM

Hello everybody!

I recently bought a 1tb Samsung HD103UJ for my PC and when I plug it in to install Windows XP on it. It always hangs at the SATA drive detection screen. I've been all over Google trying to find a solution. I've updated my BIOS but to no avail.

This could mean anything. Windows XP text mode tries to detect drives during installation after pressing F8 to accept the license agreement. Your BIOS also detects SATA drives on POST--now that you clarified that, I KNOW what you mean.

Anyway...

The problem in this case is that the SATA ports on that motherboard (as old as it is) are on a separate drive controller. This means two things:

1) The SATA controller has its own separate BIOS (not the main BIOS itself) that would need to be updated in order to see newer drives.

A little Googling myself came up with this:

http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?board_id=1&model=A7N8X+Deluxe&id=20081121051515015&page=1&SLanguage=en-us
It sounds to me like the SATA controller on that motherboard is just too old. It would have to recognize generations of SATA greater than SATA-I AND have 48-bit LBA addressing to get past the 137 GB barrier (according to the last post, it does have 48-bit LBA, but doesn't support SATA-II)

http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/a7n8x-deluxe-rev-20-1008-bios-sata-4283-update-vt69362.html
Just be careful not to turn your PC into a boat anchor (as Broni would say). It's bad enough with official BIOSes--here, they are recommending a modded BIOS!!

http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=437190
Same deal here, except you would use a program that would integrate an updated SATA BIOS into an existing BIOS and flash the merged mess SIMULTANEOUSLY. As Broni would say, "boat anchor, here we come!"

2) Even if we get past this problem, and you are able to use Samsung's utility to drop the speed to SATA 150/1.5, you WILL run into the problem I thought you were having (getting into XP setup text mode and seeing no drive at all). The solution I posted previously will get you past that.

EDIT: Having said all that, if I were in your situation, I would be torn:

The adventurous SIDE of me would go ahead and do the flash, knowing the above! Afterward, I would drop the speed to SATA 1.5, and then I would use my n-Lited Windows XP with SATA drivers to install.

The cautious and practical side of me would realize how old that board is and just save up for a new PC build.

The happy medium between the two sides would just go out and buy a cheap PCI SATA controller and avoid the whole mess (and you won't have to drop your SATA speed either). I would still have to use an n-Lited XP install so XP can see ITS SATA drivers in text mode, though...

Solve : 1680x1050 Resolution?

I have purchased an Acer w223x 22' monitor w/ 1680x1050 res. My on board VIDEO card will not play this resolution. The monitor works OK, but sometimes the picture is stretched, (movies, DVD's etc). A friend recommended an Invidia 6200 256m card. I have an old compaq w/ AMD 3200 512 sdram and PCI ports. Will this card work in my machine and will it give me the 1680x1050 resolution I am looking for?
Thank you
Tjbell61Just to make sure, what card do you have now?

Also, you said pictures are stretched. Do you mean everything is stretched, or just movies and games?I had this problem on my backup Lenovo - wanting to add the same monitor as yours - two in fact. Could not get wide screen res from on board card.

I checked AROUND newegg and techforless and LOOKED at card specs - some will list their res options .... and settled on an ATI which gave me two outputs and the res. I can't RECALL card number right now but - it does seem that many newer cards will mostly achieve this res - wide screen LCD mons are becoming much more the norm.

My main machine has a Nvidia Quadro FX1700 - quite an up market card but I expect there will be other Nvidias that'll do. Try a search on this card you mention and see if you can chase up specs on it. Make sure too whether you have PCI or PCIe slots.Basically everything is stretched. Occasionaaly some video online appears "normal", but this does not happen often. My on board VIDEO is VIA/S3GThat S3 will probably only offer the basics, beyond the straight VGA 640x480 .... 800x600, 1024x768 and maybe 1600x1200 if really lucky but probably at reduced colors OPTION. Solve : Sound Card For Audio Editing and CD Production?

Answer»

I have a two-year-old:

Systemax Venture B805 RTS PC
Pent D Proc 2.66 GHz Dual Core
1024 Memory
250 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
XP Professional

I have the GARDEN variety sound card, without upgrade, supplied with the PC.

I am into audio editing and CD production of stereo sound from a clean, high quality source.

However, the signal-to-noise ratio of the A to D on the stereo line input is only marginal, not nearly as good as the incoming audio. The right channel is about 20 db worse than the left.

I am resigned to purchase a better sound card. I don't care about gaming or multi channel (4, 5, or 7) outputs, only a clean stereo input to the A/D.

What sound card would meet my requirements? What are you using to measure noise levels? Most of the noise is not from the A/C converters. It is on the line coming into the sound device. You could try a USB external sound device, but some of these are not much better. You could get a professional card, but these are very top-end PRICEY things.
Here is just one:
http://www.proaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=475_377&products_id=901
At almost $200 that card is in the low GROUP for professional use. It has over 100db range, so you could expect better than 70db S/n and still have 30db HEAD room. Too much money for me, so I yell into the microphone! Sometimes I can get 40 db S/N.Thank you for your prompt reply.

I can SEE the noise floor on the input metering with the LINE IN cable disconnected.

Will investigate further. Thanks. Then you have a very poor sound card. Even one of the $25 sound Blaster cards do better. More often the Mic in that has a high noise level and most of the noise is pickup on the cable. That is the problem I have.

Solve : Computer stuck at opening screen?

I am not real sure if this is the place for this ? but here it goes (maybe some can point me in the right direction);
I have a T-22 Thinkpad and when I turn it on it goes to the Thinkpad screen with the F1 and F12 help topics on bottom, LEFT, of screen. There it stays! I have to repeatedly turn it off & on to get it to work. It works great when it is running THOUGH. Seems like if it is left off for a while, it works better.
I was told it was my hard drive so I bought a new one, PLUGGED it in and it does the same thing. Doesn't recognize the CD when installed either.
I am totally confused/ignorant of this matter. Any clues? ThanksCan you get into the BIOS and check the Boot Order? MAKE sure it's the CD/DVD Drive First, and then the Primary Hard Drive.

Now see if it boots into Windows.

If it doesn't, put the Windows CD into the computer, restart, and see if you can boot from the CD.

1. Firmware is the program that controls the CD Drive

Well, sort of. Firmware is "firm" - it is midway between "soft" ware (which can be changed very easily) and "hard" ware (which never changes). It is a program or stored data which the manufacturer intends shall be updatable if NECESSARY. It is CONTAINED on a flash memory chip inside the device.

Firmware is used in devices such as cell phones, CD drives, hard drives, cameras, DVD players, mp3 players, etc.

You don't need to change the firmware when you reinstall Windows! Firmware is not a "driver".

In fact it is not advisable to change to firmware on a whim, because if the flash goes wrong, the device can be left in an UNUSABLE state. A flash operation can go wrong if it is interrupted somehow, (as it says on the Dell website, if the power is cut or the CD drive is disconnected). In such a case, the Dell website you linked to suggests you download the DOS version of the firmware updater and use that. The CORRECT one for your drive that is!

Another way to render a device unusable is to flash it with totally the wrong firmware, i.e. the firmware for a different model altogether. It may not be so easy to recover the device.

In view of the fact that you seem not to be sure which model drive you actually have, and which firmware update you actually need, I think your next step is clearly to contact Dell technical suport. It may be that you have to buy a replacement CD-RW drive.

An external drive is a good option
And if often cheaper and holds more memory.

Also, the point of a backup is so that, if the laptop is damaged or lost, you have the backup at home.As long as your file are safe, you have cause to smile, coz you've your time and EXCESS spending:)Indeed......

when i format my HD (quick) a blue sreen appears and the only sentence that i remebered is that "Physical memory bumped" something like that. I also TRY to format it in the disk management but when it is almost done a message appears saying somethin "error can't format"

Im using windows XP sp3, 1gb RAM What HD are you TRYING to Format?try doing the regular formatQuote from: computeruler on January 01, 2009, 10:11:46 PM

try doing the regular format
That wouldn't work if he's formatting the Windows HARD Drive WITHIN Windows....Quote

It's almost like cutting a branch you're sitting on.
I know, in case of the branch, it's possible, but with Windows.....hmmmmmIf it's not possible for you to format from Windows, there is an option. What's a plan without a plan B. Get a bootable CD, and load to DOS and use the fdisk command, these is where you would be able to format with the "format C:/SQuote

Solve : Webcam won't work?

Answer»

I installed the drivers ect for my NEW webcam and when I go to access it, a PROMPT appears that SAYS "webcam is being used by another application". I called the manufacturer and they had me do several installs/uninstalls and reboots to no avail. I got a different webcam and the same thing happens. Does anyone have any SUGGESTIONS to get this sucker working? You try to access the camera with what program? Do you have any other startups, which may be claiming webcam (instant messenger programs, for instance)?

Solve : Buying a new gaming computer.?

Answer»

Hey guys, I'm hoping to get a little help. I'm an online gamer (raider in WoW) and my current computer is lackluster. I've done some research and *think* I've come up with a configuration for a new computer that fits my needs. I was hoping you guys could give me some advice or answer a few questions regarding that configuration.

About my needs:
I'm a pretty hardcore raider in World of Warcraft and I need a computer that is very stable and able to perform very well (50+ FPS with high/max visual settings at all times if possible) even under rigorous conditions (example: Sarth + 3 drakes). I have a $1500 +/- $100 budget (sans monitor, printer, headset).

Here's the corrent configuration I'm looking at getting:
CAS: Sigma Gaming Orca Mid-Tower 400W Case
CPU: (Sckt775)Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E8500 CPU @ 3.16GHz 1333FSB 6MB L2 Cache 64-bit
CD: LG 20X Double Layer DVD+-RW Super Allwrite + Lightscribe Technology (Black Color)
FAN: Asetek Liquid CPU Cooling System (Extreme Cooling Performance + Extreme Silent at 20dBA)
HDD: Single Hard Drive (500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDD)
KEYBOARD: Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard
MOUSE: Logitech MX518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse
MOTHERBOARD: MSI P45 Neo-F P45 Chipset LGA775 Supports Core 2 Duo CPU FSB1333 DDR2/800 Mainboard w/GbLAN,USB2.0,&7.1Audio
MEMORY: 8GB (4x2GB) PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel Memory
OS: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium w/ Service Pack 1 (64-bit Edition)
POWERSUPPLY: 800 Watts Power Supplies (Xion SuperNova Power Supply - Quad SLI Ready)
SERVICE: STANDARD WARRANTY: 3-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY PLUS LIFE-TIME TECHNICAL SUPPORT
SOUND: ESS 3D WAVETABLE SOUND PCI
SPEAKERS: 600Watts PMPO Subwoofer Stereo Speakers
VIDEO: NVIDIA GeForce GTX260 896MB 16X PCI Express (EVGA Powered by NVIDIA)
_PRICE: (+1372)

With Tax ($113) and Shipping ($30), the price comes to $1515.

I have a few questions regarding this configuration I was hoping you guys could answer:

1. Is the tower I've chosen good enough for my needs? How important is the tower, besides how it looks (and I would prefer a tower that doesn't glow a lot)? Does its size or structure play a big role in how silent my system runs, in its air flow and circulation, or in how many components it is able to hold? Is the on-board PSU useful? Does it matter that it's a Mid-Tower (VS being Full)?

2. Do the following components on that configuration fit my needs (and will they be able to support the other components in the system completely and reliably): motherboard, PSU, CPU, fan?

3. Is having 8GB of RAM worth the extra $200 over having only 4GB? How much of a difference will having that extra 4GB make in my gaming experience/computer's performance?

4. Which is better: NVIDIA or ATI Radeon? Which of the following video cards provides the best performance for its cost? (Btw, I'm willing to sacrifice price for performance, but I'm not willing to spend a lot more for a small increase in quality.)
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 1GB 16X PCI Express
NVIDIA GeForce GTX260 896MB 16X PCI Express
NVIDIA GeForce GTX280 1GB 16X PCI Express (very expensive, is it worth it?)
ATI Radeon HD 4850 PCI-E 16X 1GB Video Card
ATI Radeon HD 4870 PCI-E 16X 512MB DDR5 Video Card
ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB DDR5 PCI-Express Dual DVI-I & TVO (very expensive, is it worth it?)

5. Do you have any other advice for me? Is there anything I overlooked with this configuration that I should think about getting? Is there anything I plan to get that I don't need?

Thanks in ADVANCE for the help and advice. Where are you getting this from? Looks like a website that offers customisation of their computers - maybe Alienware, Falcon, something like that?

Re: questions at the end of your post.
1. Besides the looks, the case is very important for airflow, which in turn is important for cooling. The on board PSU here is replaced by the other PSU you've chosen, which by the way I would not recommend - I checked some reviews as I've never heard of the brand, and it doesn't look good for a high performance PC.
2. That motherboard is pretty good, but I'd recommend soemthing like an Asus P5Q Pro, or Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P instead. Those boards are made by companies I consider to be top quality (others may have different opinions) and support Crossfire for multiple video cards (more on that later). Alternatively, a 780i-based board might be nice, for SLI, although I'm not sure what's good on that end as I prefer Intel chipsets.
3. 4GB of RAM is not worth $200, which brings me back to where you're buying this rig from, it seems expensive to me. As to whether 4GB of RAM makes a difference vs 8GB, more RAM equates to a smoother experience, especially with Vista. You'll need a 64 bit OS to take advantage though, which I see you have.
4. I would recommend a 4850 from those cards, excellent value for money. If you want more performance, a 4870 or GTX 260 are also great cards, but I think overkill for WOW (I don't play it, so I don't know what's needed, but I suspect this whole rig is overkill. Do correct me if I'm wrong).
5. I'd recommend a more gaming oriented mouse, although I'm not sure if it would help you or not. I used to play a lot of FPS games, hence my G5 mouse which I think is awesome. The MX518 is also a good mouse, but there are some great alternatives around at the minute, from Razer, Logitech, and others. Consider your gaming surface too, a mousepad is more important than you may think. I love my Icemat, but again there are a wide range of mats out there. Other recommendations I'd like to make are a better sound card, better speakers (not sure what exactly those are, but with no brand specified they may not be good), a better HDD, and maybe dropping the liquid cooling system.

That's a lot to take in I know, but this sounds like it will be a big purchase, so I think it's worth taking a few days to go over everything and make sure it's perfect for you.
One more thing we'll need to know, is whether you could build your own computer from parts? It may sound difficult but it's easier than you might think. Definitely cheaper than buying pre-built, you can get exactly what you want, and the components will still have warranties.
If you wouldn't want to do it, do you know anyone that could, if we helped you build a parts list?

Let us know, we'll be here to help.

I must say, it's nice to read a well thought out, polite post with good spelling and grammar.

Welcome to the forums.

Seconded!Thank you very much for the response!

I wouldn't mind building a new computer. I am afraid I'd make some bad decisions (such as forgetting important components that I wasn't even sure I needed, or getting components that aren't compatible). I received some similar advice from a guild member of mine, and so am heavily leaning towards doing that.

I've been looking up different parts that I'll need. Some parts I'm pretty confident I want. Others I'm not too sure about. For a few parts, I have no clue what to get.

Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ($109.99)
Question: I heard this is the top rated case at the moment. It's a Mid Tower (I'm hoping it's size won't matter). Is this the case you guys would recommend?

Video Card: BFG Tech GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card ($369.99 - $35 Rebate)
Question: I saw a BFG and an EVGA version of this (BFG was less expensive). Does the brand matter?

Sound Card: No clue what to get.

Memory: Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KHX8500AD2BK2/4GR ($68.99 - $40 Rebate)
Free Gift with Memory: Kingston DataTraveler I 4GB Flash Drive
Question: Is there a brand I should be looking for? I opted to get 4GB and a 32-bit OS. I wouldn't know the difference between a 32-bit and a 64-bit. Unless there's a difference that's worth noting, I'll go with the cheaper option.

Mouse: RAZER Lachesis RZ01-00170100-R3M1 Banshee Blue 9 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Laser 4000 dpi Gaming Mouse ($79.99)

OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit for System Builders - OEM ($99.99)
Questions: Is Vista worth getting? I'm not sure I'd be willing to troubleshoot system problems on a regular basis because the OS isn't stable. If Vista will be too much of a hassle, I'll go with XP instead.

Software: Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 Licensed for 3 PCs ($79.95)

Mobo: ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard ($78.75)
Question: This appears to be the one Calum recommended. I noticed two versions on Newegg.com. The more expensive one has "8-Phase Power Optimize Stable Overclocking CrossFireX," whatever that is. The one I linked is "Open Box." Is the Open Box one fine?

HD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM ($69.99)
Question: I'm not worried about having a very large Hard Drive. 500GB is most likely way more than enough for me. I don't know much else about HDs besides their storage capacity. Is there a brand I should be looking for? Are there any other specs on a HD that I should be aware of?

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply ($119.99 - $20 Rebate)
Question: It's my understanding that I need a 600-800W PSU for the type of system I plan to build. Is this correct? This particular manufacturer received "Best Power Supply Manufacturer 2008 by Custom PC’s readers." This PSU is good enough for my needs, right?

Current Price: $1175.61
Tax: $85.23
Shipping: $51.66
Total Price: $1,312.50

Total Rebates: $95

Question about OEM: A few of the components I'm buying come as "OEM" vs Retail. The Hard drive, the optical drive, and the OS are all OEM. What (if any) additional parts will I need to purchase with these?Case: very nice case, I'd certainly recommend it. I'm going for one of those myself when I have the money. Other alternatives to consider are the Coolermaster CM-690 and Raidmax Smilodon.
Video card: again, nice choice of card. It will definitely handle almost every game out there entirely maxed out, with exceptions of Far Cry 2 and similar games at a massive resolution. The brand matters, as far as warranty is concerned. Looks like BFG cards come with either a 10 year or lifetime warranty, which is good. performance wise, the different brands will perform exactly the same unless one is factory overclocked, but the performance difference will still be quite small.
Sound card: cards to look at here would be the Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer, Elite, or Auzentech Prelude.
Memory: nice memory. The speed will most likely not be taken advantage of, because it's higher than the usual specifications. However, this isn't a bad thing, and as it's pretty cheap there's no reason to downgrade for the sake of it.
Mouse: I've not used that mouse, but it has got a lot of positive feedback over the web. I felt the same way when I bought my G5 - is it worth it? The answer for me was a definite yes. Ditto, keyboard.
OS: You'll get differing opinions on this one. Some people say Vista sucks, others that Vista is awesome. My advice would be to go ahead with Vista, and the 32-bit version will be fine for you.
Motherboard: "open box" means the box has been opened. It's covered only by Newegg's 15-day refund policy, rather than a "full" warranty. Me personally, I'd choose the other, brand new one, which is actually exactly the same, not sure why they added the red text onto it.
HD: That HD looks good to me. There are others that people may recommend, if you want ultimate performance then a Velociraptor drive may be what you want. They're much faster, but more expensive and only come in 150 or 300GB sizes. The differences will be noticeable in level load times, Windows boot times, moving files, etc, but they may not make an impact on you. Up to you if you want to spend that much, just giving you the info.
PSU: great PSU. Quality manufacturer, and enough power for you too.

OEM components are designed for system builders. They'll usually come with no accessories, e.g. cables, screws etc. This shouldn't be a problem, for example the HDD screws will be provided with the case, and cables with the motherboard. If you end up short of anything, screws and cables are cheap.

One problem I see is that you've forgotten a CPU, which will bring the price up a little, say to around $1400-1450.
This might not seem like much of a saving compared to the original, $1515, but this way you gain the experience of building it yourself, and you have a better PSU, case, sound card and video card.

What I'll do later today when I have a little more time is go through Newegg and see what I can come up with myself, along similar lines, and I'll post back with any suggestions for improvements.Thank you very much for responding again, Calum.

One problem I see is that you've forgotten a CPU

That was silly of me. I know that's one of the first things I was looking at, but somehow I forgot to add it to the cart and completely overlooked the fact that I didn't.

I've opted to take some of the "extended warranties" for some of the more expensive components. The last thing I have yet to get are the fans. I wasn't sure what brand, how many, or which types of fans (HD, memory, case, etc) I should get.

So, as things stand now, I have:

I'm at the point where I want to see what I am able to downgrade to reduce the price by a good amount without sacrificing too much quality. I hesitate not to get those warranties, especially for the CPU and Video Card, as those are some of the most important components on the system, and some of the least supported by Newegg's Return Policy. (The mouse and keyboard are probably the safest things to downgrade, but they look so cool!)I'd advise against getting those extended warranties.
Newegg should cover a lot of the items, and if they won't take them back the components will have their own warranties.
For example, Intel CPUs have a 3 year warranty with Intel directly, and most video cards come with a good long warranty with the manufacturer too. The final decision is of course up to you however.

Here's a little build I just cooked up, I saw you were online and it jogged my memory.

Antec 900 case - $109.99
Asus P5Q Pro motherboard - $129.99/$114.99 after rebate
intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU - $184.99
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU cooler - $26.99
Patriot Viper 800MHz RAM - $47.99/$22.99 after rebate
PC Power & Cooling 750W PSU - $109.99/$69.99 after rebate
Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB HDD - $69.99
Creative X-Fi Titanium sound card - $95.99
Asus radeon 4870 DK edition - $249.99/$229.99 after rebate
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit - $99.99
Sony DVDRW drive - $21.99
Logitech G11 keyboard - $58.99
Logitech G5 mouse - $46.99
OCZ Behemoth mousepad - $9.99

Total, including tax and shipping - $1,317.53, -$100 in rebates for a total of $1,217.53.

Feel free to use this build, or parts of it, also question anything you like.
Anyone else is also welcome to jump in and offer suggestions.Very nice. Ty.

As a note:
The video card is very important to me.
The sound card is not very important at all.

I'm mostly concerned with visual quality (whether playing WoW or some other game, working with image software, such as Photoshop, or watching a movie on my computer). I don't plan to buy speakers for this system and will instead use my headset. If I can get away with getting a "cheap" sound card, I'd rather do that.

You've helped me save some money though! Your PSU costs quite a bit less than mine did. I also got rid of all the warranties. I'm looking at a system that, with tax and shipping, will cost me $1,612.88. :S

Is the Arctic cooling Freezer all I'll need to keep my system cool?

Do you consider the Asus Radeon 4870 to be a better investment than my GeForce GTX 280? It's almost $100 less, but if the visual quality of the GTX 280 is worth the extra $100, I'd gladly spend it for that boost.

I'm going to put more time into looking for a mouse and keyboard. I really like the Razers (the mouse's 9 buttons would be awesome for me), but I certainly don't like their prices.

The Kingston RAM is faster than the Patriot Vipers, and after rebate they cost almost the same amount. I am going to get the mousepad and the Sony drive. I'm hesitant about getting a Intel Core 2 Quad processor. I assume a faster Dual core would be better for my needs (and require less Watts and a less expensive motherboard and cooling system).

I'm really grateful that you put the time into finding those parts.Calum has a nice setup worked out for you, but don't take the mail in rebates into consideration when it comes to your budget. If I get 1/2 or the rebates I send in for, I consider myself lucky. Or am I the only one?heljik - I've never in my life used a rebate, as I've never seen anywhere offering them where I live. Aren't they covered by a law or something though?

Dendrek - you could go for a cheaper sound card, but it can really make a difference. Without checking, I don't know if WOW supports hardware accelerated sound, if it does then the game will run faster. Dedicated sound cards definitely do offer a good improvement in sound quality, but if it doesn't bother you just take that card out and sue the built-in sound on the motherboard.
The Arctic Cooling Freezer is a good cooler. it's not necessary as the CPU does come with a cooler anyway, but this is quieter and it will cool your processor better. As such, it's not actually necessary, but I'd recommend it, I have one.
The reason I chose that Radeon 4870 is because it offers very good performance at a decent price, and that motherboard supports Crossfire, meaning that later on you can pick up another 4870 to improve performance. The GTX 280 is faster, but to do the same with that card you need an Nvidia based board, and in my experience Intel chipsets have been better and cheaper. You could buy a GTX 280 and use it on that board anyway if you like, the standard P5Q is almost the same price so I'd consider that the P5Q Pro is worth the extra few dollars.
About the RAM, it's usually better to have the RAM running in sync with the FSB - in this case, the FSB is 1066, which I did overlook. In this case, the speed of the Kingston RAM is good, but the timings are very loose. Something like this would be better, in my opinion, and not too much more expensive.
And regarding the quad core CPU, I went for a faster dual core myself and now wish I hadn't. However, it doesn't appear that WOW supports more than 2 cores, so a faster dual core would be better for you, at least for now. This E8400 looks good to me. I don't know how WOW performs or anything, and I don't know if it will be updates to support more cores - if you think it will be, a quad core is definitely recommended.
I've not used any of the Razer gaming products myself, but they do tend to get good reviews. The G5 and G11 I linked to I can recommend, as I have the older version of the G5 and have used my friend's G11. Keyboard and mouse are obviously a personal preference though, so no one can DEFINITIVELY tell you what's best for you.

I had a few more thoughts about this. The case - you say you don't want LEDs etc? All the fans it comes with have blue LEDs on them. I don't know exactly how bright they are, but if it will bother you remember to budget for some new 120mm fans. As far as I know, the big 200mm up top can't be replaced except by the same model, so those LEDs you'll have to live with if you buy that case.
Also, it might be a good idea to get a 64 bit version of Vista after all. That way, you can upgrade the RAM later on, if you want to, as a 32 bit OS only supports up to 4GB. It might not be necessary, 4GB is enough for just about anything you want to do now, but just a little thing to consider perhaps.I finally bought all the parts. It was a little intimidating to click "confirm" on something that would reduce my bank account by $1500 (especially on something that isn't finished yet, that isn't entirely guaranteed to work, and that I've never done before), but I'm pretty confident in my investment.

Thank you very much for all the help, Calum! Without your advice, I'm pretty sure I would have stuck myself with an overpriced, CRAPPY system that I would not have been satisfied with.

I'll certainly be coming back to this site if I need anymore computer-related assistance. You're very welcome, hope you enjoy it.
Please, do post back if you have any more problems or questions, and do let us know how it goes.If you haven't already built your system there is a great article on Tom's Hardware for Dec 08 about a $1250 gaming system that they built. With the extra money that you have you could get the faster cpu (in the Nov 08 article) and the better graphics card and you would still be under $1500 plus they have all the specs done for you.A 32-Bit OS won't recognise the full 4GB, it will recognise 3.4GB or something like that. Just thought I'd throw that out there.chevronman, I see the article you're referring to.
However, compared to, say, the build I did above, Tom's build lacks a dedicated sound card, gaming keyboard/mouse/mousepad, has less RAM, a worse PSU, case and cooler, but a better CPU, video card and motherboard plus larger HDD, for a similar price.
Overall, personally I'd prefer my system, especially as the i7 CPUs run very hot, not helped in this situation by the stock cooler.
Good suggestion though, and I'm not everyone so I'm sure others will benefit.

s-mac, thanks for the info but that's already been covered. For future reference, it depends on the hardware as to how much RAM a 32 bit operating system will recognize, in this case I'd expect to see around 2.8GB.

Solve : PCI Video Question?

Answer»

I recently purchased a motherboard/processor combination with on-board video. The motherboard works GREAT, but unfortunately it has only a PCI slot and no PCI-Express. I am pleased with my purchase, but I'd like to upgrade the video capabilities. I'd like to spend around $100 and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a decent card for gaming (Mass Effect, Crisis, etc.). Obviously, I'm looking for a Video card to PLAY these games on low to medium settings. Thanks for any input in advance.

Just curious, but EXACTLY what other OPTIONS are there for cards nowadays?

PCI video cards are usually fairly limited in capabilities. HOWEVER, there are a number of good prospects for your situation; almost any PCI GeForce card above the 6600FX will likely meet your requirements. What kind of motherboard did you get with only PCI slots?
No PCI card will run modern games at medium settings, and they'll likely struggle hugely with low settings too.
I think the Geforce 8500GT is the best card out there, but it's very weak for gaming.

hey, recently i bought a computer for about $100, it came with an Asus P4B motherboard with 512mb SDRAM and Intel P4 1.8GHz processor and a bunch of other stuff that i dont think is very important to mention.

So, I tried to upgrade the computer's memory and it's onboard video card, and i bought

1 x 1GB SDRAM 168pin Synch 133MHz CL3 ECC PC133R-333-542-Z (Synch is not a typo)

ATI Radeon X1650 PRO AGP 8x/4x 512MB

later, i found out that the memory doesn't work in my motherboard, it fits but it doesnt work, my computer kept giving me the error "system memory failed", so i asked the seller what was wrong, he said i needed a system motherboard

and i had also discovered that my motherboard doesn't support video cards greater than 256MB

My question is that which motherboard can i get, where all my hardware will work
and also I'm not that intelligent when it comes to purchasing hardware so what are some things i should consider while purchasing a motherboard e.g will it fit in my tower? do i have the right power supply, etc.

Thanks for all you helpApparently, you did not adequately RESEARCH the features of your motherboard before bought memory, etc. http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=P4B indicates 512MB is the maximum size memory module each of your memory slots can utilize. And, why did you buy two different brands? That's probably not a problem but, since you apparently bought all this memory around the same time, why two brands?

Your source for that? http://www.unitycorp.co.jp/support/download/manual/478/p4b_m_e.pdf

on page 30(2-10) it SAYS thats i can fit 1GB memory in one SLOT

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=P4B

indicates that the maximum memory this motherboard can hold is 3GB, you can't reach that with 3x 512MB

I bought 2 different brands becuz i bought them from ebay, only thing i was lookin for at that moment for "1GB SDRAM"

"and i had also discovered that my motherboard doesn't support video cards greater than 256MB" my source for that was the motherobard's bios, it had a "video memory" option, and the only choices given were 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, so i assumed that was the problem why my ATI Radeon 512mb card wasnt working

thankyou for your help so far but did u find a motherboard that is compatible with the hardware I bought?

Crucial.com also says each slot can handle a maximum of 512MB, which means the maximum memory for your computer would be 1.5GB. So, their information is flawed, in this case.

Those settings are for onboard video. They have nothing to do with an add-on video card.

Regarding the three sticks of RAM you purchased, try one stick at a time. If the Infineon works, try both of modules of that brand. When testing one stick at a time, try installing them in the slot closest to the processor. If that doesn't work, try another slot.

thanks, i just tried that, still the same error, and i noticed that my rams from before (512mb) doesnt say that they're ECC, so they're probably non-ECC while my new rams (3GB) are ECC

as for my video card, i dont know why it doesn't work, whn i plug it in and boot my computer it just shows me a fuzzy screen

Solve : Overclock? Yes or No?

Answer» HP, which is your computer manufacturer if I'm correct, doesn't support any PHENOM CPUs, and their site says the BOARD supports Athlon X2sbut doesn't state which ones.
The Asus board your motherboard is BASED on does support Phenom CPUs, but whether your board will, I'm not sure. I doubt it however.Hmmm..

OH well, I guess I'll be sticking with what I have for a while then.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

And yes my Manufactorer is HP.

Solve : Is this cpu good for gaming??

Answer»

I didn't know they made a PENTIUM DUAL Core line based on Prescotts either.
You'd think Intel would have KNOWN better after the Pentium D line, which had heat issues even THOUGH they were based on newer cores.
Intel's budget offerings now are pretty good though IMO - from the Conroe-L Celeron 420, based on Allendale, onwards.Yes from what I've just read this cpu would still be worth getting for those on a budget

well your computer doesn't even meet those minimum requirements! your power supply probably isnt good enough eitherOk. Thank you. I figured I was outta luck. . Do you know if it would be WORTH it to upgrade all the bits and pieces to make this card work, or would it just be better to invest in a newer system all together?Quote from: Chelsea on December 31, 2008, 02:55:07 PM

Invest in a new system, you wont get a Pentium 4 in that computer if it only supports Pentium 3.

Here in New Zealand we can get good computers for $800 new, so should be around $450-500 in the US

ya get a nice dual core and 2gb ram and imo take the card back and get a new one but you might have to anyways cause the new computewr probably wouldnt have agp slot. If i were you i would build itI think I'd sure be taking that card back to the store that sold it to you. And, I'd get an ATI or nVidia card the next time. Go online to newegg.com or tigerdirect.com to shop for a video card.that is an ati card.... also buy from newegg if your in the us or canadaYou mean the Diamond card uses and ATI graphics chip? And, does newegg.com sell in Canada now? yes they do! and yes thats what i mentFrom http://www.newegg.com/HelpInfo/FAQDetail.aspx?Module=4

Does Newegg.com ship internationally?
Newegg.com does not currently ship internationally; we only deliver to locations within the United States and to Puerto Rico.

newegg CA opened for business about a month ago....with limited inventory.

Solve : Getting PSU help?

Answer»

Can anyone tell me of a good Power Supply place to get new ones?

I found some but they have no phone numbers and I need to talk to someone.
ThankUhhh where are you located ? ?PA. USA but I use to buy from Tigerdirect.com but if I buy a PSU they realy can't talk to me about anything they just sell. What type of questions do you have ? ?
PC Power and Cooling is a great resource for PSU info but it can be a little overwhelming...
Still if you have time to READ you will COME out of it with a good handle on things...I am looking at a 270 Watt PSU that says it has
One ATX 24 pin connector.
One 12V connector for a P4 Motherboard.
Two I.D.E connectors.
One Floppy Drive connctor.
One SATA connecotor.

IN The specs it says.
+12V at 0.3A
+12 1. at 16A
+12V 2. at 16A
+5V at 18A
+3.3V at 17A

Now am I right that all the 12V ones here are all within the 24 Pin connector that goes to the Motherboard?

Quote

no.

please provide a link to the power supplies spec sheet because i think there is an error in the specs that you gave us.Here is the link

thats supposed to be -12V. the negative 12V is in the 24pin mobo connector, the other two are just your standard 4 pin 12v molex connectors.Well this is what I want to know?
Is +12V always in the 24 pin Malex Connector that goes to the Motherboard? How did you know what Voltages go to what connector?

If a PSU has a 12V Rail then how do you know what 12V goes to what? If there is -12V and +12VQuote
How did you know what Voltages go to what connector?

You don't need to know, plugs can only be inserted in sockets one way.

ATX/ATX-2 pinouts are shown here and *Blocked Russian URL*/Power/atx_v2_pinout.shtml]here..[/url]

Well LIKE I see the 24 pin connector for the Motherboard has a -12V wire and a +12V wire.

So I would gess that when you see the specs for a PSU and it says -12V at 16A and +12V at 8A this means that the connector can give this mucth to the Motherboard.

But because I see that the other wires in the 24 pin connector also have -5V and +5V and things like that that I am not RIGHT.

So I gess I will have to ask my Q in another way???

If you find a PSU and it has a 24 Pin connector it is for the Motherboard. And if it has a lot of 4. pin connectors they are for Hard Drives and things like that.
And if the PSU says it's a 320 Watt PSU that is the Wattage it can output.

OK I get this but when ever you look at any PSU specs they say.
-12V at 16A
+12V at 30A
-3.3V at 8A
+5V at 8A

So I want to know how to read these numbers what they tell me
Thank youQuote

But you are right, the quoted figures show the voltage supplied and what the maximum current drawn can be. Some connections are rated higher/lower than others depending on what voltage they deliver to components and how much current can be expected to be drawn by those components.

I think I have it now??

Whenever you see the specs for any PSU it tells you the Voltage and Amps for 3.3V and5V and 12V

So in any of the Connectors from the PSU has a YELLOW Wire it will supply the 12 Volts at what ever Amps the Specs say RIGHT?

And this goes for the other VoltagesDid you visit Quote

Solve : PC won't turn on, power light is okay?

Answer»

Hello. Apologies, I'm a beginner to the hardware aspect, and really need help before I SPEND any money if I can.

I have a HP Pavilion a250y (D7219V) CTO Desktop PC, I think it was 1-2 gigs of ram, and I know neither the video nor sound card were standard, though I forget what they are (was bought this way, with upgraded cards). It had WINDOWS XP home with I think sp2. That's all the specs I can remember off the top of my head.

Yesterday due to the risk of water damage, I had to quickly move the computer out of my room. (The computer did not get wet.) I had shut it down before I started taking out the cables, leaving the power cord for last. Since it was out I also decided to BLOW the dust out of it before putting it back. I took it back in once things were safe and connected everything, and saw the power supply light come on, but when I press the power button, nothing happened. I had no problems before this, so I can only guess either I had started taking the cables off too soon, or I did something wrong when I used the compressed air.

Fortunately my files are on an external hard drive, but if I could still get it back running, I'd be very glad.

Thank you for reading. All help and time is greatly appreciated.Hi,

You may have ACCIDENTALLY disconnected one or both of the wires that go from your power switch on the front of your case to the motherboard while dusting. If you look carefully inside your case, you should be able to tell if this is the problem by following the two wires from the power switch to the board. If they aren't connected, or only one is connected then this is the problem. Let me know if this is the problem, and if it is I will tell you how to reconnect them.Hello, and thank you for the advice. I can open the case on both sides and look, but I have some trouble with following the wires from the motherboard to the switch. Would I need to remove the front of the computer as well to check and see? Because I'm not SURE on how to remove that part.I'm sorry, I made a mistake in the specs, that should read D7219W instead of D7219V, though I'm not sure how much difference it will make to the problem. Again, all time and help is greatly appreciated. There should be a group of pins somewhere on your motherboard, most likely on the very edge in a corner. This is where your front panel buttons and lights connect to the motherboard. Just make sure they are all plugged in.

Solve : Monitor help please?

Answer»

Hi all
Hope I’m in the right bit;

Need some advice have just bought a new computer it’s an i5 quad with an ati 4650 card which has vga. DVI, hdmi connections.

I have limited desktop SPACE so I need a monitor with built in SPEAKERS so which connection should I use?

Any SUGGESTIONS on a monitor would be appreciated; computer used for general use, some occasional gaming preferably high street outlet for around £100-£140.

TIA Chris.
HDMI will provide video and sound. As long as your ATI card supports audio too. I've heard of a few cards that come with a HDMI connection, but they don't support audio. Which means one would have to connect an audio cord of some type from the monitor to the motherboard's audio jack. (Or sound card if available.)

I would help with FINDING a monitor with built in speakers, but I don't know what is good and what isn't. I would just read some reviews on the monitors that are within your budget.really choosing a monitor comes down to your preference however getting the right connections is key.
first thing is DVI and HDMI are the best for LCD monitors. i never recommend VGA as the screen can change colors. HDMI has the audio input but your graphics card and audio card need to be linked in order to get sound through the HDMI cable. so DVI with computers is always the easiest. and to get sound to your monitor using a DVI cable you'll just need to run a audio line from the back of your computer to the input jack of your monitor. so just make sure the monitor you get has the jacks you will want to use. btw HDMI cables can be pricey.

i have a samsung syncmaster p2370 and i love it. but its up to you man. go to bestbuy and other computer stores and look at them there before buying online
if you got questions about what the specs on monitors are you can google search them or wikipedia it. but sometimes the specs can be misleading as i think there isn't much of a standard when it comes to their ratings. just do some research.Hi
Thanks for the input guys, just bought a 22” samsung widescreen with dvi connection.

Looks great but TAKES a bit of geting used to after my 17” dell.
excellent choice
