Solve : Removing old heat sink from cpu ??

Answer»

Hello EVERYONE,

I have an old P4 from a dell machine. I am building a new system with this old CPU.

How can I effectively REMOVE the old heatsink from the CPU without doing any damage?

Is this even possible to break the glue seal?

Thanks !Yes, however I would like CONFIRMATION before you do this...I was always told to twist it till the paste cracks and simply lift off...Don't pull it STRAIGHT up or you could damage the CPU/Board.If the pc still functions. You might try letting it run for just a bit, but you have to be very CAREFULL not to let it get hot. Just warm it up a bit. I have used this method with twisting the heat sink (carefull you don't run it hot) successfully in the past.

Solve : Type of hard drive??

Answer»

Does anyone know what kind of hard drive this is? It came from a Dell Inspiron 8600. If you can identify it, could you recommend a GOOD 100 GB ONE?

LOOKS like a laptop drive- more likely IDE; but I'm no expert with laptop HDS...I googled it's model number and found this:

Can anyone recommend a good 100 GB to 200 GB replacement?

Anything by Western Digital, Seage or Maxtor. Personally I'd steer clear of Samsung.
You'll need PATA (IDE) and not SATA.

By the way, your drive might still be under warranty. I'm too lazy to check it for you, but you can look it up on the Hitachi website.

Solve : Portable Hard Drive?

Answer»

Hi,

Just a quickie to settle my mind. We PUT all our videos and pictures off our kaptop onto a portable hard DRIVE, MAXTOR 750GB. But im WORRIED if we get a virus on the PHD, and we'll lose it all .... again. Is it possible for the PHD to become infected, and how do we protect it / scan for problems ?Hey, I have a PhD too! Everyone can own a PhD this way!

Your virus scanner should be configured (USUALLY by default) to scan any station on your computer.
If not, you can scan it manually with most virus scanners.

What virus scanner are you using? Sorry its a 500GB Desktop storage thing ? Well we have MCafee, but we also have Drivesentry and Superantispyware. So do i just have it plugged onto my laptop when i do my weekly scans and it will do that ASWELL ?

Thanx for your help.Quote from: loobyloo168 on December 19, 2008, 03:15:31 PM

I'm thinking that you can scan it whenever you find it necessary as well.. Most virus scanners offer an on-demand solution.

If you right click anywhere on a file or folder, does an option to scan that file/folder appear? Quote from: Raptor on December 19, 2008, 03:50:24 PM

Yeah it does, i never knew i could do that. Thank you xNo problemo, come back any time. Backing up photos to CD/DVD is highly recommended...try not to use re-writables as they are not as stable a storage medium...

Solve : Why is my text blurry when I print??

Answer»

I've gone through the basic troubleshooting for my printer, I have an HP 1400 PSC and it normally works great, but now whenever I print anything, the TEXT is blurry. I haven't been able to figure out how to do the cleaning that you can do, I don't have my manual and there's nothing I can find to tell me how to do it. I changed my print quality to BEST, and all that did is make it print much slower, it is still blurry. The paper type is correct. Can someone tell me how to fix this please? Thanks!!Try re-aligning the printer cartridges.

Does it happen with EVERY program you try to print from? That's what I was trying to do, but like I said, I don't have my manual, and I can't find where to do it, you know where the instructions are on the computer itself. I can print a test page, but that's it. I just printed out a list that was attached to an email I got and it printed fine, I thinks it is just stuff off of the internet. Manual: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=1103491&I aligned my print cartridges and cleaned everything, and it's still printing like crap. Just off of the internet though. Even the text on the bottom of the page, the internet LINK and the date is perfectly CLEAR, but the text from the page itself is hardly readable. WTH?All webpages?

What Internet Browser?I remember some issue about some printers, and FF3.

Solve : Built in speakers problem?

Answer»

I have an HP Pavillion dv6000-- the COMPUTER with never enough problems...

The latest is a speaker issue. The speakers are of course built in, and were malfunctioning. They weren't appearing in the bottom left, and I couldn't adjust the volume. I figured I would just disable them then re-enable them, but now they've disappeared from the control panel. I can't find the speakers anywhere, and by the icon in the bottom left, INSTEAD of a mute or something, there's a red x.

Help? Thanks!Have you tried System Restore?
When you bought your computer, it should have came with some cds. Do you have them?So they aren't in the device manager?

click start -> right click my computer and SELECT properties -> hardware tab -> Device Manager.

Any components with a red X or a yellow ! on it?Nothing-- it's not there at all

And I don't have any of the CDs that came with it Quote from: JJ 3000 on December 19, 2008, 01:33:29 AM

Just get the drivers from the HP website and reinstall the soundcard. The speakers are never DETECTED anyway.

Solve : Memory Caping?

Answer»

I am running a ga-vm800pmc mouther bord with a 2Duo CPU em4500 2.20ghz. Nvidia GeForce 7300 gt. the bord has 4 mem slots 2 ddr2 and 2 ddr1, u can only run one or the outher not both. Max is 2 gig unbuffed mem. im trying to run 2 gig ddr2 533 unbuffed but can only run 1 gig because 2 1 gig stucks actuly makes it alittle more than 2 gig. the moutherbord only alows exactly 2 gig.does any one know a way to to cap the memory at 2 gig? my os is xp ser2...

well after reading from u all i went and did a memtest the second 1 gig ram was BAD. brand new, wouldnt have thought that. thanks for all the help from everyone and BIG thanks to Patio. next time i buy all test my self thanks agen all2 1GB sticks makes 2GB, simple maths. Where are you getting the impression that 2 1Gb sticks make more than 2GB?
What happens if you try to boot with two 1GB sticks? My assumption would be that the board says it supports 2GB, and standard metric prefixes denote GB as 1000, not 1024- so the maximum as they SEE it is 2000MB.

Additionally, RAM is sold with markings indicating their size in MB; in this case, 1024 for the 1GB.

Thus, they come up with RAM that is 2048MB, and the board maximum of 2000MB.

Just a wild guess; but it is likely the case.BC programer thats the hammer on the nail. Im just trying to figure it there away to trick the bios to only pick up exactly 2 gig. ps the manufacture says is supports the mem brand i perchesed.Did you try telling it a joke and when it's off guard, quickly plug in the memory?

Worked for me. Quote from: rkhan1 on December 20, 2008, 12:27:34 PM

BC programer thats the hammer on the nail. Im just trying to figure it there away to trick the bios to only pick up exactly 2 gig. ps the manufacture says is supports the mem brand i perchesed.

think you'll find just about every board manufacture says something to that effect, and they
actuall use some memory for the system board resources so the max. they see is 2048 minus system mem...

you are plugging them into the correct slots as specified by the manual???
What does the MBoard manual say ? ?
Are the RAM speeds within specs ? ?
I suspect there are more hidden details to this issue...what I said before was my thought process to understand the misunderstanding.

Your board supports 2GB. 2GB is 2048, not 2000. Especially when dealing with RAM. my ramblings seemed to indicate that your assumption was correct; thankfully for you however, it is almost assuredly not the case, and 2GB of RAM is 2048MB.yes this is true but i still cant git it to work i have manoged to git allthe way to the windows is loding screen but the it reboots every time. so when i take the second 1 did ram out it boots allthe wayI find it extremely hard to fathom that a board would cap out at 2000MB ...
That being said i would DLoad and run MemTest...let it run at least 2 hours and test each stik individually...

Solve : Computer won't shutdown?

Answer»

Hi
My computer has developed a fault when TRYING to shut itself down. I do hear my 2 hard drives switch themselves off, but for some reason, the Cpu fan and all other fans keep spinning....Does anyone have any idea’s what’s wrong here? The things I have tried so far are as follows: Cleared the CMOS, Unplugged all the usb devices apart from mouse and keyboard, re seated RAM and graphics cards and tried another Psu. I have now run out of idea's and hope someone can suggest something else. Thanks!

1) MOTHERBOARD: Asus crosshair
2) Ram 2 gig Corsair
3) Psu Coolermaster 700 modular
4) Cpu Amd Athlon 64x2 Dual core 3.2 GHz
5) Windows Vista 32bit
How long do you wait ? ?
What method of shutdown ? ?And when did this start happening?1) I have waited more than 10 minutes before I give up and press and hold the front switch, this is the only way to switch it off completely.

2) My normal shutdown would be Start/arrow/Shutdown.

3) Started happening just before I posted this, up until then it was all good. I have not added anything new to the computer.
Try a System Restore to a few days before the problem.I have tried System Restore but it didn't solve the problem. I also tried using my Acronis software to restore an image I had taken of my hard drive, prior to this happening, but unfortunately this didn't work either. Can some give me a list a probabilities, including the ONES I have already done. Also, am I wrong in thinking this could be a motherboard fault?Troubleshoot Vista shutdown issues...

Solve : MOuse with Pin Plugs?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a AcerPowr S Series Desktop and the MOuse has Pin Plugs. NOw the mouse is not working. Unfortunately have checked all the local shops and they say that they DONOT have those types of mouse anymore. Can I plug in a Mouse with an USB drive. Really donot know MUCH about this as I am a novice. The computer was manufactured in 2005 and is working perfectly well. Can anybody help. Have to USE the keyboard instead and it is QUITE cumbersome.
Regards,

Parramatta, Australia

Most USB mice come with a ps2 adapter.
If you have a usb port on your computer you can use a usb mouse.
You should have a usb port if it only three years old.I find it KIND of odd that none of these shops would bother to explain you that you get a PS/2 converter with most mice... Not necessarily anymore.

Newer Dell PCs have no PS/2 ports, and the mouse that comes with them are USB only--no PS/2 adapter.

I'm guessing that mouse manufacturers are starting to phase out the USB to PS/2 connector...I bought a Microsoft mouse a few days ago that came with a PS/2 converter.

Solve : Image on screen has severe 'bleeding'?

Answer»

I was using an AGP video card in my computer (running Windows 98SE), and at one point, the image severely bled to the right. Rebooting didn't help, reseating didn't help either. I know this is a hardware issue, as the onboard video works (but I cannot do a lot of things I used to be able to do), and the configuration didn't change. It might be notable that I am using a CRT. I also noticed that the onboard itself has a bit of bleeding, but barely any. Any ideas?

Just remembered, it even bleeds on the BIOS screen (where it shows you the BIOS version)As you said, it could be a hardware issue; but since your encountering similar behaviour with the on-board... have you tried a different monitor? It could be electromagnetic interference. Do you have any other electronic devices close to the monitor (like speakers)?BC_Programmer, I encounter something with not only the on-board and the video card, but also with any computer using a CRT monitor. The video card's case is just more severe than the rest.

JJ 3000, I have speakers nearby, but they would not be the source of the problem. I have moved them numerous times, to no change.

All, I believe this bleeding is a fact of life for all CRTs. Next week (ASAP), I'll TRY hooking the card up to this LCD monitor we have connected to a different computer. I don't know whether there will be bleeding or not.

I will also try to test all of the connections on the card with my multimeter. Heat might have caused some warping, or maybe not. It can't hurt to try, anyway. I also know this card is out of warranty (unless it has a lifetime warranty, IDK if it does or not), so my best BET might be to get a new card. Does anyone know if an AGP card which doesn't say it's compatible with Win98SE would work? I just suspect some FUNCTIONALITY would be lost, because the BIOS would be a primary gateway, and the POST would fail OTHERWISE (I believe).so then the colour bleeding occurs with various computers with different configurations?

I wouldn't say CRT colour bleeding is a fact of life- I have a monitor from 96 that has a PERFECTLY sharp picture, and have never personally seen a CRT with colour bleeding before. Now television sets, that's a different story...

What particular cards are you looking at that don't claim windows 98 support? At the very least, they will work with the generic VGA driver. The question then is wether the manufacturer has released windows 98 drivers for the device.Quote

Rebooting didn't help, reseating didn't help either. I know this is a hardware issue, as the onboard video works (but I cannot do a lot of things I used to be able to do)

The onboard video was most likely lacking drivers (or processing power), correct? The former can be easily redeemed by a visit to the mainboard manufacturer.

It sounds to me like your videocard is overheating. Perhaps you just need to reapply some thermal paste and clean out the cooler.

Solve : DVD/CD ROM stopped working?

Answer»

I'm running Vista and only have one DVD ROM on my computer. It still opens but when I put in a DVD it loads for a minute or two then says to insert a disc. The drive still shows up on My Computer and the Device Manager doesn't show that it has any problem. I've restarted the computer a couple times and re-installed the drive but it didn't help at all.

Any help would be great, thanks!heres a couple of suggestions...

1. take apart the DVD drive and clean the lens
2. if suggestion 1 doesnt work, purchase a new one. DVD DRIVES are about $30 now.Do you know of any ways that I could narrow it down to being DIRTY or just cleaning it without removing the drive? I don't want to take it apart and void the warranty but I don't want to send it in if it's something easy I can fix. Sorry for making this a pain but if there's another route I can take I'd prefer it.you may be able to get AWAY with using a CD lens cleaner. in my experience they do not work very well, but it is the only other option that i can think of.

I'm trying to burn a music cd using wmp and I GET a message that says there is no disc in the drive when there is a brand new, empty disc in there.
I have tried sonic record now as well as the windows cd copying utility and received the same message.
I also tried sytem restore back a month ( I CANT remember the last time I used the disc drives), different discs and cleaing the dust out of the tower to no avail.

I have a cheap DELL Celeron with 512 MB of Ram, Xp OS version 2002 service pack 3. I'm not sure what else to include..

Any suggestions? I had planned to give cd's for Christmas but this will certainly put a damper on that idea.....

Solve : Monitor on Strike?

Answer»

Knock on wood, but this problem has yet to afflict me this session.

However, during my past two sessions, the computer monitor has frozen up and proffered strange vertical bars for my viewing pleasure. I can mess with the monitor's SETTINGS using the buttons on it, but the situation can't be helped through my efforts until I shut off the computer.

The monitor I'm using bears both the label "COMPAQ" and "7550," and is a few years old (purchased new at some point during or after 2001). Compaq describes it as such:
Quote

Compaq V7550 monitor is an economical flat-faced 17-inch CRT that offers excellent performance for office suite software and Internet and e-mail applications. With its ample viewing area and affordable cost, the V7550 monitor is an ideal desktop display unit for mainstream business users including marketing professionals, CONSULTANTS, and trainers. The large viewable screen of the V7550 monitor REDUCES user eyestrain and fatigue while improving production speed and work quality. The 17-inch monitor offers an economical upgrade to a larger screen, without the increased bulk or cost of a 19-inch or 22-inch unit. The V7550 monitor's flat face technology offers crisp image clarity, even in the finest details of Internet sites, e-mail, documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The flat face also reduces the edge-of-screen distortion normally found on curved-screen monitors. The V7550 monitor is a highly affordable CRT that can also be an integral part of a total desktop solution when COMBINED with a Compaq EVO desktop or notebook PC and docking station, which it is specifically designed to match in color and style. When you buy the V7550 monitor along with a Compaq PC, you are guaranteed end-to-end product serviceability. The V7550 monitor is designed for optimum user comfort. The monitor's tilt-and-swivel features let users adjust the positioning of the unit according to their individual needs. The V7550 monitor meets the most stringent worldwide environmental regulatory standards, including TCO99, which ensures reduced emissions and compliance with environmental sourcing and recycling standards. The monitor is also Energy Star and MPR-II compliant to ensure power usage efficiency and lower emission levels.

I still haven't had this problem during this session, but I'd greatly appreciate any help or suggestions nonetheless.

(Just an observation, but I've been using Firefox v 2.* for this post, but was using Firefox Portable v 3.* when the problem occurred previously. I don't know if that could have anything to do with the issue or not.)Make sure your videocard fan is dust free. Reapply thermal paste if necessary. The computer DID seem to be unusually quiet when the screen did that the first time. I'll have to get permission before I crack it open, though, as it's not mine.

Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it goes.

Solve : hangs at BIOS page on startup?

Answer»

Quote from: landa321 on December 21, 2008, 12:40:13 PM

btw - i have one system fan that is located in the center of the side panel.

I'd move it to the back so it can blow out there and tape the side hole shut. Adding a fan in front of the case, if possible, creates an even stronger airflow. Especially important if the hard drive is located in the front of the case so it can immediately be cooled down.

This is most LIKELY a side-issue but it's worth looking into for the sake of your PC's health. removed the hard drive... same results.

i can see the bottom of the heatsink.

replacing the BATTERY didn't seem to make much of a difference.

It will take quite a while before it goes into BIOS, so I will let you know the current temp and whether BIOS is set to Quick Boot. Should it be if it is not?

BIOS version 6.00PG

The fan on center of side panel is actually attached to the side panel. should I consider adding a fan to the front and/or back of the case?I don't know what kind of computer case you have. A fan blowing out from the back is always a good thing but you should decide for yourself what the most logical course of action is. EG: Adding a fan in the front and the back and disconnecting the side fan or perhaps adding a fan in the front and keeping the fan on the side panel?

It depends on the layout of your case and the kind of hardware you have installed and want the keep cooled. Consider it homework for creativity class.

Regarding your problem. If you disconnect anything but the RAM, CPU, keyboard and monitor, does the problem still occur? Make sure that you unhook any cables from the motherboard to devices that aren't attached.

Have you had the time to run the RAM diagnostic test and if so, did it report any errors?

Can you inspect your mainboard for leaking capacitors or burned chips?

Is the north/south-bridge cooler (If any) still properly seated?

What kind of PSU do you have and do you have a PSU lying around that you can replace it with?
ok... big change in results here. I removed all of the PCI cards, all cables, and the CD-ROM.
The BIOS post fired up! Memory check happened super fast and i was able to get into BIOS in seconds. Basically... the way it is supposed to work.

CPU temp in BIOS is now 39 degrees celsius.

I did not run RAM diagnostic, but due to these results, I am thinking the RAM is not the problem, right? Obviously, I will do that eventually anyway.

But, now that the BIOS is loading up good, what should I do next?
If I do try to load Windows on to this new hard drive, I will still have the problem with it not detecting all of the space. In other words, it will probably only detect 13100 MB instead of the full 750GB, but I guess I'll deal with that a little later.

What next?almost forgot to mention... that CMOS error - defaults loaded came up againQuote

Start plugging back in the devices you disconnected. Plug one in and turn it on. See what device causes the problem.

Can you verify if it still happens now that the BIOS/POST is functioning normally?

Still diagnose your RAM just to be sure. Press "T" to do extended tests in Microsoft Memory Diagnostics, let it run all the tests once with all your RAM installed.

If any errors are given, use only one RAM module at the time.

You might resolve this by loading the "Fail-safe" values in the BIOS if such an option is available. If not, try loading "Default" values manually.

This is a Gigabyte mainboard, correct? Does it come with that dual-BIOS thing where you actually have two BIOS? Quote from: Raptor on December 21, 2008, 02:06:36 PM

Naw, try installing Vista first to see if that reports the right size. If it does, we'll know there are no further PROBLEMS and just need to figure out what part causes the problem.

You only have to add the CD/DVD-ROM Player to install Vista because your computer is now as minimalistic as it can be, right?

As for the dual-bios, I forgot what it was called. I've only ever owned one Gigabyte mainboard and they advertised it on the box.

I'm not sure if your mainboard has it or not. The manual speaks of it on the @Bios page but I quickly skimmed through the rest and can't find any mention of it. You should sit down and study it in a bit more detail. It might be the cause of your BIOS error messages. Your mainboard switching back and forth between back-up and current BIOS.

However, it might not be related to your current problem and could be a COINCIDENCE..

I don't have a Vista disc. I have XP Pro.

I don't see anything about Dual BIOS on the MB box. Yes... I keep all boxes.

Should I go ahead and load XP then? I have a feeling that XP without any SPs won't allow me to use all of the 750GB on the sata hard drive.Quote from: landa321 on December 21, 2008, 02:51:46 PM

What size is reported in BIOS?

Some sources claim 137GB is indeed the maximal size you can see if you do not upgrade to SP1. So that should be considered normal behaviour which means we can focus on the slow-post again.

13100 MB is what was being detected. What happens if I go ahead and install XP Pro like that? Will it detect the rest of the space once I am up and running and download SP1?Quote from: landa321 on December 21, 2008, 03:42:02 PM

That makes for 13GB..

Does the BIOS report the same?

By the way, did connecting the CD-ROM player start the slow downs again? They have stopped now, correct? i haven't actually done that. Since you said to install Vista and I don't have that, I want to make sure I should go ahead with the XP pro.

i will reconnect the hard drive now.Quote from: landa321 on December 21, 2008, 03:55:23 PM

I thought you had Vista at first, XP will do fine. See if XP reports the proper amount now.

Have you got the diagnostics for the hard drive ready in case XP doesn't report 137GB (Or more if it comes with a service pack).

Also listen to the sound its making; does it sound like its having difficulties getting up to speed? Or perhaps it makes a ticking noise?
I will attempt to load XP and let you know exactly how much of the drive is being detected by Windows.
BIOS does detect 750GB

Solve : Double Action Single Clicking Mouse?

Answer»

When I single click my left mouse key, it does a double action. For instance if I'm playing solitaire it will cause two rows of cards to deal instead of one, and if I want to move a card it will highlight and unhighlight it. If I try to open a folder, it goes right through to opening the nearest file that appears on the next screen - I have other examples of double actions for a single click. I've lowered my computer's mouse control setting to slowest, but that didn't affect it in the least. The packaging didn't actually have a Microsoft compatible logo on it, but it picked up and installed the mouse's software as soon as I first plugged the mouse in. Any suggestions?Try another mouse.Quote from: Broni on December 15, 2008, 07:12:32 PM

Try another mouse.

But my mouse is an exceptionally cute Pylones mouse. It's aqua blue with gold fishies on it, and the matching mousepad is aqua blue with ocean waves on it. I don't want another mouse! I want this one to work!

The design is no LONGER available, but here's the link to see other Pylones mice:

I've always wanted a mouse that is nothing more than a glamourized piece of plastic that came straight out of a Chinese low-wage labour factory where mums work 18 hours a day and come home being forced to feed their children contaminated milk because they can't afford cow milk and are too stressed to produce it themselves. Milk, that is. Not cow milk. I don't think Chinese women produce cow milk.

Ever thought about the kind of paint they spray on those things? I doubt they adhere to any standards set by health committees. But then again, who NEEDS health committees? It's a mouse that looks like a frog!

erm... what revolutions?

The actions that got us 8 hour work days/40 hour weeks, minimum wages, work place safety regulations, and things like that.

I know what you mean- but they weren't revolutions per se- revolution pretty much means overthrowing the government by force. The fact is, though; Canada, U.S, U.K, and so forth, are democracies, and are (debatably) controlled by the people by the manner of a representative government. As such, people's concerned are addressed when they become an issue; without happy people, the governments will go out of power during the next election (U.S) or vote of non-confidence (Canada- not sure about U.K).

China, on the other hand, is a DICTATORSHIP. Since the dictator has control in this situation, the only requirement of them is to keep the people thinking they are happy.

However; your use of the word revolution fits here, since that is what it would take to overthrow a dictatorship. Not that I really want to argue, but here's Merriam-Webster ONLINE's definition:

2 a: a sudden, radical, or complete change b: a fundamental change in political organization ; especially : the overthrow or renunciation of one government or ruler and the substitution of another by the governed c: activity or movement designed to effect fundamental changes in the socioeconomic situation d: a fundamental change in the way of thinking about or visualizing something : a change of paradigm e: a changeover in use or preference especially in technology

Anyway, sorry to say, nothing's really changed with my mouse. It's still double actioning everything - going through a folder and opening a file, dealing a double row of cards, making duplicate entries in the calculator... poopies!

My rank on the Enterprise is - sorry, I can't reveal that.that definition seems to jive with what I said. No radical change in the government was established to give the western countries what we have; in fact, we've taken them for granted essentially since our constitutions/Bill of rights were written; but they did constitute a change in the way of thinking as far as human rights were concerned, so I guess it would fall under that.

But I do know what you mean, and your right; so there is no need for us to get pedantic.

On to the mouse, however;

Now, it's been suggested to try another mouse if possible. This isn't to say you would switch and use that mouse; if it works, however, it will eliminate software issues, mostly meaning the mouse is fubar.

Now, once we can eliminate the mouse itself as the problem(IE, problem exists with backup known good mouse), we can attempt to determine what settings have been changed that are causing this behaviour.

Any Mouse-driver programs, such as Intellipoint, running?

Sounds like you've already inspected the mouse control panel dialog, so I assume you found nothing amiss.

There is one thing that could be causing it; I had a similar issue with a mouse that refused to click at all. The solution was to open it up and clean out the innards. Now it works like new! similar problems with my gamepads and the like were solved in a similar manner.

Only thing is; I've never had a Click-double scenario as you have here- my thinking says it's possible that there is just enough crud in there so that the button barely pushes the click-button underneath- possibly causing two clicks to be detected.

Lastly; I apologize for helping to hijack your thread. the discussion was not leading in a direction that would solve your problem, and I facilitated that.

Solve : Which LCD monitor??

Answer»

Because I have taken up processing of video's I am now considering the replacement of my 15"CRT monitor by a 22" LCD monitor. I have tried to compare a lot of these things by their specifications but the only result is that I am left totally confused. There are so many monitors with the same given specifications but with prices, differing several hundreds of Euro's! Up to now nobody could give me a plausible answer or advice. Can anybody of you?
The specifications of my PC are: Intel Pentium IV 2.8 GHz; 1GB memory; nVidia GeForce FX 5500.I've found that the only effective way to select a new monitor is to first set a budget...
Research the models in your price range...
And finally go see them in person.I am very satisfied with the performance, looks, quality and OSD of any modern Samsung LCD screen. They are sold for as few as 120 euros.

Given your location, have a look here (Click)

I'd stay away from Acer. Hello!
If I may add, ask for people who are using LCD screens for the longest time and ask if they can make recommendations...Quote from: RAPTOR on December 21, 2008, 09:42:01 AM

I'm using an Acer widescreen right now; and have since last christmas. My brother has a Viewsonic, and I have to say it's terrible in comparison to my Acer. every single resolution change munges up the LCD clock, so it stretches out; and even at the native resolution the image goes off the sides about 10 pixels.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how good ViewSonic is considered.Never heard of Viewsonic, I wouldn't buy a non-established brand when it comes to something you'll spend most of your life looking at.

I have an Acer monitor that breaks down every so often and requires its capacitors to be replaced. Some kind of design error (Acer Al711)

Once tried to obtain a new recovery disc for a client of mine through Acer. Sent in three forums and two phone calls and I still don't have the bloody discs.

The software they add to their laptops in my region is poorly translated (Half GERMAN, half my language) and often doesn't update the underlying Windows settings causing conflicts... That and the software is painfully slow.

They're just a budget brand hidden under a thick layer of juicy design and low pricing

Asrock is a subsidiary of Asus.

Asrock mainboards have a habit of being short of capacitors leading to capacitor failure.

I would never recommend Asrock but I like Asus a lot.

By the way, a quick look on Wiki shows that Acer is not related to Samsung That tells you something about sales-men, eh? Thank you all for your input. Unfortunately it hardly narrows down the range of monitors. One statement confirms my idea and that is the negative image of Acer but that leaves me a lot of other brands with whole series of types. I am convinced that several brands have types which are good value for money but I don't think I can make a founded decision without knowing why one brand can sell monitors of, say 120 Euro's and, at the same time, types up to 400 Euro's. The buyers must have a reason, I suppose....Well, when I first purchade an LCD screen I made a little Excel spreadsheet that contained five monitors of my choice and I just compared all their specifications. Putting a red mark if I didn't like something and a green if I did like something.

The one with the most green marks ended up to be a Samsung 930BF which I've had for about 3 years now...

These things usually affect the price of an LCD monitor;

  • The ability to twist and tilt the monitor
  • The quality of the foot of the monitor
  • The brightness of the screen (In CDM/2 if I'm not mistaken)
  • The type of pixel warranty (Manufacturer page will TELL you)
  • the response time (In milliseconds)
  • the viewing angle (in degrees, the higher the better)

That and you'll probably spend up to 40% more if you buy it in stores rather than order it off the net.
I have to say that an Acer screen which my gran has is good quality (she;'s had it around a YEAR) but it can't be tilted at all - the stand prevents it.
I have a cheapo HannsG display and it's fantastic.
Viewsonic actually have a pretty good reputation, at least from what I've heard.
Sony screens are good, also Samsung as suggested, LG and Asus.Thank you all. Especially Raptor for the listing which makes sense to me. I'll see if I can make a choice with this information.Kind of curious what you'll come home with, Hans. Let us know.

Solve : PCIslot/IRQ?

Answer» DELL XPS model WHL O/S XP-Pro. Recently i had occasion to DESIRE to install an Airlink wireless PCI 300n model AWLH6090 adapter into the above computer. I used a VACANT PCI slot that had been used by some earlier hardware installation (unknown to me). After appropriate software installation and hardware a point arose after the required reboot that the computer froze at the XP loading window. A discussion with Airlnk tech resolved the issue. They claimed that the problem was caused by the IRQ of that particular slot remaining associated with whatever previous device had been in it and therefore would not recognize the new hardware i had installed. That problem was overcome by changing the PCI slot to another that had never been used. However if indeed that was the cause then i am now left with only one remaining PCI slot (the one that wouldn't work) that is vacant. Is there some way to "clear" or whatever the proper term is the IRQ association for that particular slot? How can i identify it (other than physically) in a way that i am certain i am changing the correct slot?My own research has found the following:

Re: can I change irq values in xp?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you experincing any issues with your machine? Motherboards and Windows XP these days are mature enough to handle IRQ assignments efficiently. It's common for Windows systems (later than 98SE) to display more than one device on the same IRQ. If your rig is not PCI Express, check in BIOS that you have the following options enabled:
- ACPI
- APIC
- PNP Aware OS

If they're enabled, and the PnP service in Windows is functioning properly, IRQ's shouldn't be a worry - even if there's more than one device on an IRQ.
__________________

Is this the right way to go or is there a different/better way to proceed. While i have no immediate need for the remaining PCI slot that may change in the future.
truenorthI've never had a problem like this but some BIOS allow you to sort of reassign or 'reset' IRQ's.
Raptor, Yes i saw a reference to a BIOS approach in addition to the one in my original post. However it was less than specific as to how to accomplish it specifically for the PCI slot involved. I have often done this before on many computers (add/change hardware) and also have never had a problem. But it seems that under some conditions of certain computers it can occur.I don't know if it was the specific device i was trying to install or will all hardware devices create that problem when i try to use that slot? Time will tell if/when i try to use it. However if I can resolve it now rather than wait i would prefer that. thank you for the input.truenorthSorry, no clue. I do know some devices are picky about the slot that they're in.

I did some searching on Google;

Quote
Windows XP cannot rebalance resources in the same way that Microsoft Windows 98 does. After PCI resources are set, they generally cannot be changed. If you change to an incorrect IRQ setting or I/O range for the bus that a device is on, Windows XP cannot compensate by rebalancing the resource that was assigned to that bus.

Quote
The Plug and Play operating system settings in the computer BIOS do not generally affect how Windows XP handles the hardware. However, Microsoft recommends that you set the Plug and Play operating system setting to No or Disabled in the computer BIOS.

Quote
Manually assigning IRQs to PCI slots in the system BIOS as a troubleshooting method may work on some non-ACPI systems that use a standard PC hardware abstraction layer (HAL), but these settings are ignored by Plug and Play in Windows if ACPI support is enabled. If you MUST manually assign IRQ addresses through the BIOS to a device on an ACPI motherboard, you must reinstall Windows to force the installation to use a Standard PC HAL.
Raptor, Again I thank you and all of what you display is the same kind of info i found during my search prior to the post. It pretty much says it cannot be done except in one limited case and even then a change does not seem to be guarantied. One day when i can find some spare time i will stick something into that slot and see how it behaves. Then i will at least have an idea if it is hardware type specific (as in the current case of the wireless adapter) or if it is universal. Best of the season to you. truenorthI'd try it in a different slot with more up to date (or out of date) drivers and if the card doesn't support WPA2, get something more modern. have you read this...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314068

fgdn17, Thank you for your input. While i had not seen that particular article pretty much all of the content did appear on the other sites i did check. The one additional bit of info that i had not seen before is the reference to the BIOS "disable the plug and play". When time permits i shall check the BIOS and see what the current setting is and if a change as suggested is required i shall do so. As you saw from the original post the tech support at Airlink 101 were the providers of the info that resulted in the question. From that i assume this is a known problem to them in the XP O/S and their suggested remedy did work. As to the viability of that particular (now vacant) slot to recognize any other devices (than theirs that did not work) remains to be determined. My curiosity will have me testing that when time permits. truenorth
P.S. I must say though that the DISABLING of the plug and play function i suspect will bring on it's own set of problems if it literally means what it says.
Best of the season to you.No, I think they're just talking about NOT enabling "Plug and play OS" in the BIOS so that the BIOS can deal with the resource assignment rather than the OS.

That is preferable for some reason. I forgot why.
Raptor, Distinction acknowledged,thanks,truenorth

Solve : I can't CHKDSK my HD HELP?

Answer»

somebody pls help me. I can't chkdsk my drive D: it says that the master file is corrupt. Can my files be recovered? pls give me instructions.Hello! Welcome to CH!
Regarding your problem, we need additional info. Please read here: more infoim using windows XP SP3 with 1gb RAM, 260gb HD...

when i BOOT my pc after the windows xp loads the chkdsk start automatically. it checks my drive D: (seagate 260gb IDE) but the dskchk always aborts it says..... "Corrupt Master File Table... DSKCHK aborted". on the other hand if i double click the drive D: a message prompt will appear that says "D/: is not accessible.... The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable."

How can i solve this problem. can i back up my file in this drive? Is there any sounds produced on your harddisk? Unreasonably hot?there is no different sound produced by my HD it sound like my other HD it is not also hot.

here another info when i ryt click my drive D: and click properties these are the details:

Type : Local Disk
File System: RAW

Used Space : 0 bytes
Free Space : 0 bytes

Capacity : 0 bytes

hope that details will help. and i also think that my HD did not crashRAW is bad news. It means that windows thinks the drive is blank.
Although I have training in hard drive technology, I can not recommend anything at this point. It is possible that most of your data is still there and only an entry in the MAR has been changed. That is very unlikely an accident. It would almost always be a deliberate act by you, someone else, or a hostile program.
Have you recently used strange or new drive utilities? Did you have a failed install of a Linux system?
Anyway, I don't think I am able to help you with this one. Sorry.
Maybe somebody else here knows what to do. all i did was watch my video in real player then it is not playing. i try another vidoe from my drive D: then a message from the NOTIFICATION area appears that there is some files corrupt. after that i restart my pc. then the chkdsk automaticaaly start after the windows xp load then thats it it says "Corrupt Master file table... dskchk aborted"

i also try to chkdsk my D: in the command prompt it is also the same it also says
"Corrupt Master file table... dskchk aborted".

HELP ME ANYONE. i have tons of videos in this drive how can i recover it. The only recovery advice from MS is to format and reinstall from backup!

However, the CHKREG.EXE UTILITY seems to have had some success in recovering corrupt entries, see here. You'd have to alter the WINNT to WINDOWS if you decide to give it a go. I have never run CHKREG.

You COULD also try running the Seagate hdd diagnostics to find out if the hdd has failed. See this post.

Hang in there, others may have experienced the same problem and they MIGHT post a solution when they get out of bed.

Good luck. This basically means the MFT is corrupted,

Solve : Connecting PC to amplifier/speakers?

Answer»

It can't be this tough, I know, and I'm missing something basic but...I'm trying to go to a Yamaha EMX212 mixer/power amplifier, out to PA speakers from my PC running VISTA Premium 6600 Quad, 4GB, NVIDIA, RealTec HD and everything else you can name. I cannot for the life of me get it to play out. I have the capability hardware wise, can someone help with the smarts that I can't help myself with PLEASE? I know....stupid but come on...I just turned 55. Good memory, just short!
Thanks in ADVANCE,
BGMost desktop PCs these days do not have an analog line out. A few do. The usual thing is to use the speaker connection from the PC to go into a mixer at about +6dbm into a unbalanced line in.
This is a pain because then you can not have the PC speakers hooked up. So we get one of those stereo Y adapters, the kind that lets two people use headphones form one source. You put one to the little PC sneakers and the other to a unbalanced line input on your mixer. Be careful with the level. Yeah at full level output from PC you will notice some distortion with most sound cards, but Geek is right, You want a 3.5mm jack adapter to you canon/RCA/Big 3.5mm (forgot what size it is) or whatever you are using for your amp, and then out to the Speakers..

You will want sound level of the main volume out from your computer to be at 8/10 of full level, and plugged into the speaker/headphone port of your PC.

Then in vista make sure all your separate PROGRAMS are at full volume (in Vista you can change each programs volume independently)

Do you get any sound throughput on your PFL? (if it has one)

Do you get anything if you just plug in normal computer speakers/headphones?

Solve : external drive shuts down computer?

Answer»

I have a Storagebird Solo 20-U external disk that has been working without problems since I bought it 3 months ago. Today when I went to plug it into the normal USB port, it shut down my computer. As soon as I pulled it out of the port, the computer started up again on its own (rebooted, I guess). I tried the external drive in another port, but the same thing happened. I tried this about 4 times. Then I turned off the computer and while it was still off I plugged in the external drive, but the computer wouldn't start up at all - it'll only start if the external drive is out.

I tried two other USB sticks in the same ports and they work fine. Also found Device Manager and when I look under Properties in USB Root Hub no problems are reported.

I don't know much about computers. The info under "General" in System Properties gives the computer as an AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 DUAL. CORE Processor 4200+. 1.77 GHz, 1.00GB RAM. I have Windows XP Prof SR2 (2002) SERVICE Pack 3.

Did a virus scan tonight and nothing came up.

I may have pulled the external drive out of the USB port a few days ago without going through the "Safely Remove Software" steps... but I think the disc still worked after that.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!Sounds like it's SHORT circuiting. Check the cable for damage. thanks for responding. the cable looks just fine with the naked eye. would you suggest that I take it to the store where I bought it so they can check it?What do you need us for when you come up with all the ideas?

If they ask if you want to leave it behind, make sure that you know whether or not they back-up the data (If that is still possible)

the external casing and the hard drive are two separate objects, either one of them could be broken. If the casing is the broken part, it might still be possible to gain access to the data.

What kind of external hard drive is it? OK, I'll ask them to back up the data; thanks for the advice.

On the drive it says its a Storagebird Solo 20-U. It just plugs in to a USB port - doesn't need electricity. I stupidly threw out the box (and I think the sales receipt!). The external casing looks fine.have you tried it in another machine??? If it works in another machine, close it down/remove hardware correctly...then try it again on your machine...

also you can goto control panel, system, hardware, device manager, click the + sign
next to universal serial devices, right click each one and uninstall...then re-boot system(they will be re-configured) and
try the disk again...

Good Luckthanks for the very clear instructions! After I read your note I tried it on another machine and it doesn't work there either. Took it back to the store where they tested it and said it's not getting any electricity. It's off to repair land.It does sound like a short circuit... and you are very lucky because USB SHORTS can be very unforgiving and painful.

They can take out motherboards on their own!

Good to see it's being repaired though

Solve : Computer restarts constantly, and I can't get past the login screen.?

Answer»

Did you do that test yet? Oh, I have not. =/
I haven't really had a chance to sit down and play a good hour of anything, especially since I'm still contending with intermittent BSODs and the busy winter schedule. I do plan on playing the Witcher for an extended amount of time tonight or tomorrow - I'll report the temperature when I get it.

Also, my computer has stayed a steady 52-55C (not running GAMES) after changing to the settings in the guide. For reference, I had previously held a STABLE 63ish degrees. After over an hour of the Witcher, my computer was at about 60C. I also didn't get any BSODs (yet)!

So how would I go about lowering my temperatures even more? Which variable would I mess with? I'm still a tad reserved in terms of fiddling with rivatuner. Also, I just discovered that I have a 500W PSU, not a 600. Is the PSU possibly bottlenecking (or causing nv4disp.dll BSODs)? Or perhaps, causing some parts to GENERATE more heat than necessary?Quote from: Darusame on December 24, 2008, 01:26:22 AM

Try a wattage calculator on the web to see if you meet the requirements. What kind of PSU do you have?

As for your 60c, YES, that is very acceptable. I mean I'd never try gaming without Rivatuner controlling the fans.
So, I'd never GAME with the default fan settings, as in without any software managing the speed.
Does that make more sense?
Sorry for the confusion.I use a fan controller for my two videocards. A fan controller is another option of course.
Having the fan controlled automatically is more convenient though, no need to watch the temperature and keep adjusting the fan to compensate.

Solve : Laptop with Second Monitor problem?

Answer»

Well, doesn't that clearly indicate a bad monitor? Is it an LCD monitor?

As I understand it, failure in LCD monitors is often due to a bad internal power supply component, and that component can be replaced. I have a 19 inch LCD that someone turned in to a recycling drive conducted by a local computer users' group to which I belong. It did not work. A friend who knows a lot about electrical circuitry and who is also a member of the group fixed it by pulling a power supply component from another monitor, as I understand it, and I became the new owner. I've been using it for about 6 weeks now and it's working FINE.

So, if you have any repair shops in your area, you might want to explore the repair option.Quote from: soybean on December 24, 2008, 10:26:04 AM

The only problem I have with this diagnosis is that the monitor (LCD 19") does DISPLAY as normal for about 5 seconds when it is connected, and then it GOES off. It's almost as if it WOULD work if it could be bothered, heh.So one monitor works and the other doesn't?

So one monitor works and the other doesn't?

The "broken" monitor is a ViewSonic VA1912w 19" LCD. The working monitor is a 17" Sony Trinitron Multiscan17SEII (which is 10 years old and going strong, heh).

I've not tried removing anything from the device manager yet. The only entries in the Monitors section are Generic PnP (which is my laptop monitor) and generic non-pnp (which only appears when I plug in either the working or the non-working monitor)Yes, that Sony monitor is of very high quality. Can't stand the little lines that you see running across the screen, though.

Try removing the generic non-PNP and restart. Keep the monitor hooked on
If that doesn't work, get monitor drivers from the manufacturer's webpage and load those. Quote from: Raptor on December 24, 2008, 10:59:09 AM

Tried, failed. Beginning to think it's irretreivable without a soldering iron or similar.

I am looking for new headphones to buy 150 or less(for use on my pc), i want them to be wounderful for music as well as incorperate the fancy new sound card features that go into new games.

wounderfull surround sound and directional sound/sound staging (not multispeaker/ 5.1 plz)

awsome bass (subwoofer is very important.)

I do not use a microphone

I prefer closed headphones but open are ok to.

I have the new X-Fi Xtreme Gamer card from soundblaster:

Those requirements are easy to meet. The hard stuff is when yu want noise cancelling, SUPER comfort, lightweight and so on. Wireless?

Professions in the recording business just use the standard headphones used in the industry. They are ugly, heavy cost a lot and can blow your hear off.
But for low PRICE here are some that do not reproduce the blast of a jet engine at 50 yards:

I don't use a headset often and this serves the purpose; works well with my notebook PC for PC-to-phone calls. And, it actually has fairly good sound for music. Solve : Network Printer Issue?

Answer»

Hi all.

Until recently the network in my house was a wireless one, running through a Linksys WRT54G router. A couple of weeks ago I decided to connect them with cable instead, to improve things. Ever since then I have not been able to print from the other workstations to my printer.

I had no issues when I was just running wireless. My main workstation prints to the printer (HP LaserJet 1100) just fine. The printer is set to share. All the MACHINES in my house are running XP. The printer doesn't even SHOW up on my other workstations when I run the wizard.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.Procontec, I SEEM to vaguely remember from some time back when i was setting up a printer share on a network that it is vitally important to do the share instructions from the main user computer in the network. Don't know if this helps or is relevant. Best of the season, truenorthare all the systems on the same workgroup/domain as the main workstation???

It doesn't sound as if they are, until all machines are on the same LAN, they will not see the shared printer...so...setup your network on each machine and use the same workgroup for all...

interesting they all printed fine running wireless...need to think about that one...

Good LuckThanks for the replies ladies and germs.

Well I think it's definitely SOMETHING to do with the way my network is set up, and it won't make matters any easier that my knowledge in this AREA is sketchy at best.

I believe the main user computer is not the one that the printer is connected to, but I'm not sure how to determine which is the main computer. It may be of note that when I run the Add Printer Wizard on the workstation attached to the printer, it doesn't see the printer when I search the network, but it does find it locally.

This may be too much brainpower to ask you guys to devote to this right now, what with visions of sugarplums dancing through our heads and all. Thanks as always.

Thanks for the replies ladies and germs.

lol. Procontec, Just a brief respit from all the sugarplum dancers to say that i am very convinced that once you identify the"Server" computer as opposed to the "client" computer and make your printer sharing from that one you will be up and running. goodluck, truenorth

Probably not. Most laptops are not upgradeable except for adding memory. However, I understand some recently new models do have a replaceable video card. I presume this is only available on some of the higher priced models. Can you visit the manufacturer's website and search for info on your model? Perhaps you can contact their tech support.soybean is correct based on the following from the intel spec sheet:

The Mobile Intel® GM965 Express Chipset is the whole piece of silicon, including PCI Express, memory, and CPU INTERFACES along with the graphics accelerator. The Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 is just that part of the GM965 which is used for graphics.

Of course your model could be an exception, so follow what he said refering to manufactors site...

Solve : My Christmas wish: I wish my speakers would work?

Answer»

Hi,
I recently had to reinstall XP on my comp and for the past few days I have been trying desperately to get my computer to once again detect my Logitech X-530 5.1 speakers. I have a Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G motherboard with an onboard sound card and I've been installing all the drivers i can find in order to get it to recognize my speakers like it used to. The last two drivers i tried were here http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=2281 under Audio. I thought for sure one of them would work, but alas, when i tried each, neither did. I'm all out of ideas, can anyone help me out?

thanks!Did you install chipset driver, first?yes, but because i got the installation FILE from a FRIEND with faster internet, i will DL it myself and install againAlso...
Did you try speakers on another computer?
Does Device Manager show any errors?yes, the speakers work on the other, older computer i have without errorsTry to reinstall those chipset drivers, then.ok, from this site http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=2281 i INSTALLED the fourth chipset driver, and reinstalled the two audio drivers separately, and still, sound and audio devices on the control panel does not recognize the speakersQuote from: Broni on December 24, 2008, 09:59:29 PM

Does Device Manager show any errors?
my speakers are not listed in the device managerI think what they meant was the onboard sound card..No audio devices at all?
Do you see a picture of a speaker anywhere? It will probably say something like: "Sound" beside of it.here are the things listed under Sound, video and game controllers in the device manager:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

these things and my CD/DVD Rom devices are the only hardware listed available in my Sounds and Audio Devices menu in the Control PanelAre there any yellow question marks or red X's in the device manager?
Is the onboard audio enabled in BIOS?
Do other speakers work on that computer? You said you have an older computer. Have you tried the speakers that go with the older one on that machine?there is one yellow question mark in the DM under Other Devices for a "PCI Device" whatever that is. I don't know about the BIOS enabling, so that could be a good lead. I won't be able to switch out speakers til tomorrow.

I just want to thank everyone who has posted trying to help. I was pretty frustrated when this problem popped up. I gotta go to bed for x-mas morning tomorrow, but I'll definitely check out the BIOS thing and try other speakers and post back.

Thanks and merry christmas everyone! You need a driver for that. Right click on it and select update driver. Let it search the internet for the driver. If those speakers came with a cd point it to the cd drive

Solve : Maxor external HD will not start (device manager code 10)?

I have a Maxtor OneTouch external HD that I've used before on my laptop that's running Vista and haven't had a problem. When I plugged it into the FIREWIRE connector the device manager tells me (under Maxtor Peronal Storage Security) that 'this device cannot start (code 10)'. The software is current and I haven't had any luck finding a solution on the Maxtor website or Windows Help. Maxor Manager, the program it uses, doesn't recognize a device either. I don't know too much about computers and didn't want to try to poke around too much on my own so that's as far as I've gone. Any help is appreciated, thanks. It has a CONNECTION for a USB but I can't find the cord for it.Can anyone tell me where to find out more about the error codes coming from the device manager? I haven't been able to find anything about it.I hooked it up to try what you sent me and it started to work fine WITHOUT me doing anything. Thanks for the help though, I'll make SURE to try it if the hd starts acting up again. Thanks again!I hooked it up through the firewire like I did before and it worked. I had it connected for a day or two and without unplugging it starting to tell me the same thing. I'll try the things you said and see if I can get it working again.

I'd never do that. While i certainly do appreciate the elocution assistance i wonder if an opinion on the "firewire"aspect of the posters problem could be addressed.truenorth best of the season.Well what I ment was I want to playback in Stereo because all of my tapes are recorded in Stereo they are not old.

So I thought Hi Fi will playback in Stereo.
Then I saw Norm and Norm Hi Fi and the book did not tell what all the diferant modes are???nymph4, As i stated i do believe i understand your issue completely now. However if you could provide me (as i asked) the name of the manufacturer and model number of the VCR i will try to do some research on it and see if i can find out more about your 3 audio options. Also, while it may not be a concern, i am curious as to what effect the "firewire" connection might have on your transfers.truenorthThe firewire is digital...Should provide Stereo however Normal and Hi-Fi will both be in stereo as long as he has both the white and red plugged in AND if the tape is stereo.

The white doubles as Mono/Left
So if he only uses white, the box will detect this and convert it to mono signal, yet if he uses the two output sources, (white and red) it will be output in stereoThis is going to be my last kick at this can-the more i read the more confused i get. Plus i am NOT getting answers from the creator of the post to the questions i am asking. However it is this that causes my concern re the "firewire":= "So my Stereo VCRs Audio Jecks Left and Right and the Video Jecks are going into an ADVC 100 Box.

This Box takes Analog Signals and converts them to Digital Signals and Outputs them in a Firewire.

This Firewire I have going into my Computer."
While i do comprehend that the firewire is digital. How is the firewire (with one cable i assume) creating an audio file that will be "stereo". Given what stereo actually is. That is my conundrum.truenorth

My CVR is a JVC HR-J692U

And my AD VC100 box takes the Left and Right and the Video Outputs from my Stereo VCR.

And sends them to my computer Firewire so it is putting Stereo sound in the Firewire RIGHT?my say:
Yes

If in doubt, record something with only left or only right and then play it back over the firewire and see if the levels will only show on one side.Kurtiskain, I commend you on your last suggestion. That test will eradicate any concerns i have about the firewire aspect.truenorthQuote from: truenorth on December 25, 2008, 07:59:15 AM
Kurtiskain, I commend you on your last suggestion. That test will eradicate any concerns i have about the firewire aspect.truenorth

Thanks

so all you NEED to do is get somthing that you know outputs in stereo that can output to rca eg dvd player, and use just white, (remember this will give you levels on both left and right() and then with just red and see if you only get right hand channels. Then try both and listen to it to tets for voice movement.

Solve : Problem with SATA HDDs, barely detected!?

Answer»

Hey there, it's my first post on these forums

I got this strange problem, I HOPE someone will be able to provide a solution to it.

My SATA HDDs are detected in the BIOS and I could partially install Windows XP on this brand new 500GB HDD . YET at startup when my computer looks for a media to boot from, it says there's no hard disk detected!? (hence why I couldn't complete the Windows XP install)

It doesn't come from the cables nor the disks (I tried other ones).

My motherboard is an Asus P5Q. I already messed with the SATA configuration in the BIOS and tried all settings available but it didn't help. I also updated the BIOS and it didn't help either.

Could anyone provide help to this strange problem? Thanks in advance!Very early on in the install process there is a prompt to "PressF6 if additional drivers are needed"...

Thanks for the quick answer!

But I thought this was only for Windows XP to detect SATA HDDs, which it did fine already? My problem happens when it searches for a media to boot from. Was this a real XP CD or the "sharpie" version ? ?Quote from: patio on December 25, 2008, 09:51:42 AM
Was this a real XP CD or the "sharpie" version ? ?
It's a 'real' CD in the sense it's pretty much unmodified. It probably had SATA drivers included since I could begin the installation on the HDD.

Now, I have the weirdest thing ever. I just completed the installation on my 500GB HDD and am running Windows on it right now! BUT I can only boot on it if I have my IDE HDD on!

So basically it still goes undetected at boot time... but then I boot into this very installation of Windows anyway *only* when my IDE hdd is on. It's ALMOST as if it tries to boot on my IDE hdd and then it ends up booting my SATA one. This is really confusing.Quote

It's a downloaded copy, yes. I owned Windows XP Familial a long time ago but lost the CD.

Does this mean you don't want to help me anymore? If so I'll understand..It sounds like it is writing the boot SECTOR to the IDE drive and it BOOTS to the IDE but the IDE points it back to the SATA drive for Windows...

Solve : Help with disabled monitor?

Answer»

Somehow my computer monitor has been disabled and i have tried rebooting in safe mode and in last known configuration, yet both did not work. Now everytime we start the computer a screen comes up saying setup is being restarted and freezes. If i could somehow get to the desktop i could use the device management and get through it in the dark but i can't get the computer to boot up. HELP please. thanksIs this a laptop?

Can you get to the Desktop?

What Operating System?

What is the error message and when does it apSpear? No its not a laptop. its windows xp and i cant get to the desktop. everytime i go to reboot the computer it freezes mid process on a page that says "setup is restarting". If i could figure out a way to get to the desktop i know a way to enable the monitor but right now the computer wont go to the desktop.Setup is Restarting? Are you not booting Windows normally?

Also, can you try another monitor if you think it's a monitor problem? We have tried booting it in safe MOOD and normal mood and both times it freezes and says setup is restarting. And right now it's not really a monitor problem, since we can't even get to boot anymore. Before it would boot and go to a BLACK page but now it freezes.err basically that means your windows partition is screwed, your installation failed partway through?

Slave your drive in another machine, backup all your important stuff off, and reformat and reinstall windows.OR

You will need the Genuine XP CD.

I was going to SUGGEST this but in my experience once the installation has gotten to here, Windows no longer DETECTS it as a windows XP partition and doesn't give you the option to repair it.No harm in trying.

Solve : processor upgrade help!!?

Answer»

Nup even windows 2000 would run 2 CPU's like that.

I guess it would be really cool to get your hands on some though to see how it really works.I have a dual socket 370 P3 1GHz server system, with 2GB of RAM.
Downside is, those systems usually require ECC RAM, which is even more expensive and harder to find.
Plus, dual CPU systems are better if the processors are properly matched - not just the same stepping or core - which can also be hard to do.
I lucked out on an Ebay deal.
Pretty decent machines, but then again I work with older hardware a lot, so anything with a clock speed of around 750MHz or more is "pretty decent" to me.yeah that always was a problem, they have to be the same processor CODE, right?

Like if you WANTED to run 2 2,5GHz Celerons, you would NEED 2 SL6ZY's not a SL6ZY and a 2.4 clocked to 2.5You'd need the same CPU yes, and I'm almost positive the same stepping of that CPU.
Best results are if you have CPUs with the same ... can't remember the name ... but it indicates where it was made and when.
My CPUs were both made at the same plant, in the same week, and the RAM modules all show the same week of manufacture and similar serial numbers.
Re: different OSes, some OSes do not support multiple CPUs but do support multiple cores.
Not sure, without Googling, if XP HOME will do it or not.It would seem after some Google searching, NT 4.0 and anything about that in the NT family should run Dual-or-more CPU's

However XP home does not support 2 CPU's

Supporting Dual Processors

Another reason to CHOOSE Windows XP Professional is if yours is a dual–processor system. Some high–end computers, graphics workstations, and supercharged machines built by gaming or COMPUTING enthusiasts have two processors on the motherboard. How can you tell if your computer has two processors? You can be fairly certain that if you aren't sure, then your computer is a single–processor machine. For dual–processor computers, you'll need to purchase Windows XP Professional instead of Home Edition to enable the second processor to work.

So NT 4.0 (and up I think) Windows 2000, XP Pro, Vista and Server 2003 all will run dual-cpu's

Solve : [Dell]Bluetooth and Touchpad Problem?

Answer»

Hey everyone.

I bought a brand new Dell VOSTRO 1510.

Everythings great, except 2 things. Above my keypad is a list of little flashy things, that show whether the network is working, if the caps lock is on or not, etc. I noticed there was a "B" which stood for bluetooth.

The only problem is, I dont know how to use it, or even find out if I have it.

I tried the Dell help LINE, but they couldnt do anything...
Any help on how to enable/figure out bluetooth?

Secondly, my touchpad's scrolling feature [ya know...the one where you can scroll USING the touchpad itself] suddenly stopped working. I restarted my laptop normally with no difference than before, and all of a sudden, it stops working. Normal movement WORKS, its just the scrolling feature that isnt working, which is something I really do use.

Yes I have CALLED Dell about my problems, and they were of no help.
Thanks in advance for any help.

- ZainDid it come with a manual? NoCheck the back panel for a Bluetooth jack...this will tell you whether it has it or not...
As to the Touchpad issues try in Control Panel and the adjustments should be in there...
Good Luck.what does the bluetooth jack look like?

and I tried the mouse and Dell touchpad settings.

Both problems are still happening.

Solve : IDE HDD Generic Question?

Answer»

original problem was that they had two drives, a bootable XP install on an IDE DRIVE, and another IDE drive. their problem is it isn't booting from the second IDE drive, and ALWAYS boots to the first IDE, no matter what they do to the boot order.

Well, surprise surprise, the new drive is unbootable. so regardless of wether it appears first in the boot order, the computer won't be able to boot from it and will move down the list to the next one, EVENTUALLY hitting the bootable IDE drive and proceeding to boot from it. Solution? Install an OS on the drive to boot from, by using a windows CD or other OS install solution.

Quote from: Raptor on December 25, 2008, 01:59:06 AM

So you can claim to boot from a device that does not have an OS on it?

In that CASE I can boot from my MOUSE.

I booted my computer with my foot once.If you put toothpaste on the drive it will be bootable.Quote from: patio on December 25, 2008, 09:37:23 AM
If you put toothpaste on the drive it will be bootable.

And if it doesn't, it'll at least smell nice which is nearly as useful as booting from an empty hard drive.

Solve : Going to explode... Printer driver does not install correctly.?

Answer»

I am having this problem for a while. The problem concerns my printer. I have a hp psc 1610 all in one printer. When I use the installation disk to install the software and the driver for the printer and connect the printer so the installation can finish the setup the installation recognizes the Hp 1600 printer which is the wrong one. I have the hp 1610. Then each time I START my computer the wizard want me to install the printer all over again, because the installation disk does not recognize the correct driver.

I am running windows xp service pack 3

I have installed the printer software through the cd before and have gone to the website before and none of these methods seem to work.alyoob,Have you ever successfully used this printer on any computer? When you go into control panel and click on "printers & Faxes" what devices are displayed? In device manager do you have any yellow asterisks or question marks beside anything? How old is this printer? truenorthYes i have used the printer successfully before but my problem is that when the computer boots up it displays the installation wizard that want me to reinstall the driver again. That wizard slow down my computer until I exit it myslef. The printer is diaplyed but the problem is when I start the computer not that I cannot print or use the printer.alyoob,My initial suggestion would be to disconnect the printer from your computer. Then unistall the hardware and any associated drivers for the printer (or for that matter any other printer software for that printer or any other that you can find). Then reconnect the printer to the computer and let the computer lead you through the "new hardware found" wizard and when you get to the point of requiring the drivers do your search for them on line at the company website. By the way what manner of connection to the computer are you using is it a printer cable or a USB connection?truenorthLet me see what's starting with the computer...

Had the same problem on a client's computer. The computer would constantly demand that the printer be reinstalled. Over and over.
Ended up reformatting after spending two hours trying to find a solution.

There's a reason I no longer delve into Hijackthis logs and whatnot; it's waste of time. Some systems are irreparably damged and just need a good old fashioned reformat to save time and future problems resulting from poor system maintenance. Actually, this is known, and documented ISSUE with some HP printers, and Windows reinstallation may not help, because it looks like HP service, I mentioned is the culprit.

If the resolutions above do not help, leave the PML driver service set to Disabled . Most if not all printing functions will work without it, and print quality and speed are not affected by this.

Under the hardware tab check under device manager for any items with exclamation marks or an X over them.Did you check speakers with another working computer?

No, not starting with clean hard drive. There is a 32-bit modded version of vista on here right now....Quote from: msglobe81 on December 25, 2008, 03:37:03 AM

ok, this is evga. i go to the website though and i cant find the motherboard. it only comes up with geforce BOARDS. This is an nforce 780i sli board... God im confused...

Well, check the manual to see if there's any where special they want you to go. For some reason I can't access the eVGA website at the moment.

And you want to get rid of that, right? I assume the hard drive is already used so we might as well diagnose it first.

Get diagnostic software from the hard drive manufacturer's webpage. Most of the time, this will also allow you to write zeroes to the hard drive. Effectively reformatting it..ok, this thing is designed by nvidia and distributed by evga.... I can find it on the nvidia site but not on the evga. There is nothing on either site about a bios UPDATE...ok, found a bios update for this thing. it comes in the form of a program. I downloaded it and installed it. It askes me to clear the CMOS which i did but it wont let me do anything after this. There is now a file on my desktop called bios.bin now though. What do you think i should do from here?
the only thing it tells me to do is to boot from vista disk and format that way... gives no other option

Dude, you're not paying attention.

I said "Copy the fix list or search for fixes in the release list that are related to your problems"

Never once did I say "Go ahead and flash your BIOS". And do you know why? Because if you start messing around with flashing BIOS without knowing what you're doing, you'll soon be the proud owner of a useless paperweight.

Either stop what you're doing or FOLLOW the procedure to the very letter, whatever option the 'program' gives you. I hope that 'clearing the CMOS' just meant 'resetting' it .... If not ,well I guess we'll find out after the next reset.

Ok, get the diagnostic software and diagnose the HDD.

You never let me know if

A) Everything is mounted properly
B) You found those 64 bit drifvers
C) What exactly was in the fix list for your BIOS
D) If the memtest was succesful in diagnosing all of your RAM.

I'm going to be disconnected from the internet for a few hours, get an answer to these questions and read back on our previous posts to see if you forgot to do anything that needs doing.

everything is mounted
got 64 bit drivers
memtest was successful
cannot find any fix list for this bios. I really cant figure out where it is. the motherboard is through nvidia and that is where I found the drivers but there is no fix list for the bios. Not that I can find anyway.
I am ASSUMING it did just reset it. I have restarted several times and it is starting back up like it always did... Still gives me the blue screen when I try to boot from vista CD.... I am going to pass out myself for a few hours. Gotta get up and do family stuff soon.... Need sleep. Thanks for all the help. i really appreciate it and hope to get this fixed soon... thanks againSo does it show you a blue screen when you load the drivers to get started with the reformatting process or at another stage? So I got it working. I took out the 2g of ram I installed and the OS installed fine after that. Does that mean something is wrong with the ram? I reinstalled it after getting the OS on the computer and it recognizes it perfectly fine and the computer seems to be running fine....
Well, you diagnosed the RAM with memtest86 which was able to see all of the RAM, correct?

Solve : Havin issue with getting sound out of my speakers...?

Answer»

So i built this computer a while ago. Originally I had a downloaded version of vista on it but was having alot of PROBLEMS with it so I decided to change the OS. I downloaded a different version of vista that was modded and put it on the computer. Before switching to the new OS my sound worked fine but afterwards I cant get a THING out of the speakers. Since then I have installed a store bought legitimate version of Vista on the computer but the sound is still not working. I have plugged the speakers into a different computer and they are working fine... I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and unplugged the speakers and plugged them back in about a BILLION times but am still getting the same result. Anyone have any IDEAS?We don't assist with pirate versions of Windows or any other software...

SORRY.
