Solve : Every games crashes?

Answer»

I'm at a complete loss. About a month ago I installed GTA 4 on my computer and experiences my first crash since I bought the system last year. Since then I've been experiencing random freezes and crashes for all my games. Sometimes my screen will fill with random textures and freeze, other times a "purple mist" freezes my games, and other times it'll simply crash to the desktop. Mind you, this isn't just for GTA 4, which I haven't played in some time, but for ALL games, including ones that never gave me problems before. Fallout 3: crashed, NWN2: crashed, Just Cause: crashed, Splinter CELL: crashed. Even older games like Sim City 4 are crashing. I would just figure I didn't have powerful enough a system if it weren't for the fact that they all used to work perfectly.

Now I've updated, rolled back and re-installed literally every driver on my system. I've FORMATTED my drives and re-installed windows. I upgraded to Vista and then returned to XP. Nothing seems to be fixing the problem and the worst thing is, I can't determine what the problem is because the crashes are random. Sometimes they happen a few minutes after starting up the game, other times they don't happen for a few hours. My temps during crashes do not seem to rise, either.

My guess is a dead card. GTA 4 was over my system and I'm afraid I fried my graphics card. Although, by that logic, I shouldn't even be able to start half of these games, none the less play them smoothly until the crash. I really do not want to BUY a new one until I know for sure what the problem is and if I can get it fixed without paying anything.

By the way, my system info is:

nVidia 8800 GT 512MB
2 GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo at 3.17 MhzYou didn't mention anything about system temperatures. Have you checked those? Sounds like you're overheating. Also what is the Make and wattage of the PSU ? ?I suspected overheating as well, however, My temps a keeping at a fairly steady 30C, which they always run at.

As for wattage, I've got a 650W power supply. Am I possibly underpowered? I'm seriously starting to think it's a voodoo hex.
Dear lord, I just retested my temps. I had apparently I've been reading my main system temp. I just used RivaTuner to observe a crash and it registered 107C at the time of the crash. SO I guess it really is overheating. My big question now is, how did it get so bad? I used to run so well. The FAN on the GPU is still running. Suggestions and theories?Quote

The fan on the GPU is still running.

did you double-check this?

I had a similar experience, in that a game would simply appear to freeze for a good 2 minutes, and then continue on as normal. Turns out the graphics driver was crashing hard, and windows was able to recover each time and let the game go on.

I used RivaTuner at some point to underclock the card bac kto the factory setting for the chip (the card came overclocked) which seemed to fix it.

Later on down the road- I opened up my case for one reason or another, and noticed that my GPU fan was tilted... and busted completely. I was able to replace it with a fan from a similar model card I owned, and then even put the clock back up to the "default" overclocked state I bought it at.

WHEN I TRIED TO BOOT I GOT THREE LONG BEEPS AND THAT'S ALL IT DOES NOW EVEN WHEN I PUT THE ORIGINAL DRIVES BACK AS THEY WERE (IT WON'T BOOT UP). DOES MIXING THE JUMPER SETTINGS CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OR CAN I GET IT BACK TO WHERE IT WAS PREVIOUSLY?no, it may have changed your bios setting an not sure what one to boot too. What brand is the motherboard.......remove and reseat memory, cards ....you may have moved them when working on the HARD drivescan you tell me how to set that if it won't boot up?ALSO, I did remove and reseat the memory as well as the vieo cards....that was in the list of possible causes that I found along the way.....to no avail.....This the motherboard INFO. Solve : Computer won't power up..Fan runs like it's going to?

Answer»

I am having this SAME exact problem. I have tried switching out different Power Supplies/Video Cards/Cords/DVI, VGA Plugs except changing the Motherboard. So I am going to conclude it is my mother board.

If the capacitors are leaking or crusted (they have a + on top of them) then the motherboard is usually toast......I continued to use a motherboard with 9 festering caps for over a year until the keyboard port failed and an acrid odor started.Quote

an acrid odor started

Nothing like the odor of failed electrical components. I experienced it last year with a "blown" power SUPPLY. We see this all the time at work with older machines. Most of the time the CPU is still in working CONDITION, but the motherboard definitely needs to be replaced. I find that the computers here with blown capacitors usually are due to a heat problem CAUSE by dust buildup. I have also had that happen with projectors.

Most recently my personal LAPTOP had the same issue Its funny you say that. When I opened mine up the heatsink was full of dust.LOL ... could have assisted in disabling your computer. It just gives me the opportunity to learn something new!! That is an excellent way of looking at it. I'm glad you THINK that way!

I have no other problems with running other games, but for some reason i can not run HALO Combat Evolved.

Solve : IDE to SATA help?

Answer»

i just got a NEW gateway computer and have been trying to find out about something. it has a 640gb SATA hdd and only has SATA connector slots (or whatever you CALL them) to ADD other hdd's or optical drives. i have 2 IDE hdd's and an IDE optical drive i want to add to this tower without having to use external enclosures since im only limited to 6 usb ports total and only 2 of them on the front. i want to avoid USING a usb hub if possible. is what i need called an "IDE to SATA cable/converter" or "SATA to IDE cable/converter"? i'm guessing it's the first. or are they the same thing? i've seen the things that u just plug into your motherboard and then just plug the IDE hdd into it. would that be all i need? what about the power cable? thanks in advance.here you go, sir

http://www.cooldrives.com/serial-ata---ata-atapi-ide-interface-adapter.html

Plug the adapter into the back of your IDE drives, and then use a SATA data cable to connect the IDE drive to the SATA controllers (conectors) on the motherboard.thanks for the reply. from that link you sent me, it says the IDE drive becomes a SATA drive but do you know if that means it will run at SATA speeds or at least faster then traditional IDE speeds? also, if i use this for my IDE optical drive will it still run at least at the speeds it does as just an IDE drive and maybe faster also? thanks again.Quote from: munkytown on June 05, 2009, 03:41:27 PM

As far as I can see the adapter allows for connecting the the IDE drive to the SATA connector.....I didn't read any specifications or any documentation on the adapters..
Whether or not the speed is enhanced or converted to SATA speed, I have no clue..alrighty. thankskeep in mind that's just one WEBSITE where you can purchase those adapters....if you look around carefully you may be able to find some good deals....and save some money

Solve : Graphic card likes a thump?

Answer»

Hi, I have a Nivdia 8500 GT card in my pc. LATELY I have had some WAVY lines on my monitor, so I tapped the back of my Case and it clears up ( happens every so often). Whats up with that? How do I permanently remedy this problem? What is the problem?Buy a new video card.
The card may be coming slowly unseated. Do you have another slot to put it in?

Not sure if I have another slot. I have a Asus P5B motherboard. I have never opened my case yet because of the warranty. ( expires soon) so if it's just unseated can I just shove it back in? Any thing to worry about? I never open my a pc yet but its time to slowly start learning what to do. I'm very cautious Unplug PC.......Unscrew the screw holding the card in place, and gently wiggle the card by the ends to remove it, inspect pins, reseat it carefully until it is in position, replace hold down screw.....don't touch any components on the card itself....Follow JJ3000s' advice and see if there's another slot available..... Touch the metal case each time you go into the case to AVOID ESD(static)...When you're in the case be sure to do some housekeeping....blow out the dust if present......You don't want to be tapping the case too much, what with drives spinning, LOOSENING CPU heatsink, fan ,etc., whacking the case could compound your problems.

One last thought, before you do any of the above, check your PC and monitor CONNECTIONS.....the thump to the case may be forcing an improved connection at the back of the case...tighten every connection.Excellent! Thanks guys! Love the static advice, I was intimated to do this, static being a issue when reading others that have ruined things in this manner, never thought of touching the side of the case.

Solve : Audio not functioning, please assist?

Answer»

Hello, this is my first post here with a computer problem, bear with me as technology and I are not the best of friends.

My computer (Windows XP) has been playing sounds perfectly well up until a certain point, I listened to Youtube videos and played games all the time without any problems, as to what made it stop doing so, I have no clue. At some point, the computer simply failed to make any sounds. When I turn my speakers (which are made by HP) up to maximum volume, I can hear that annoying ring of the speakers READY to function, so for now, it would seem that this is not an issue with faulty speakers.

The strangest part of this is, when I ATTEMPT to figure out what's going on with my sound system, and I access my volume control, it says "No Audio Mixer detected" I would like to reiterate that my computer's sound functioned very well up until this point, evidently this "missing hardware" has simply flown under my computer's radar. When I CHECK my hardware, it notes that everything is working properly, but will not allow me to modify sound settings because I apparently have no mixer. Other than this sound issue, nothing else is going wrong.
D'oh! All i needed to do was update my drivers, problem solved.Dancingman,Welcome to the CH forums and well done. I hope all your future computer problems will be as easy for you to resolve. truenorthThanks for the warm welcome TrueNorth now I can get HELP on my comp without expensive tech support. We'll sure try.truenorth

Solve : Installing new Hard Drive on a dell PC.?

Answer»

Doing some WORK on my mother in laws computer, and her old hard drive was completely fried. I'm currently installing the drive and am running into some issues.

I have the pin settings on the IDE harddrive SET to Single, as this is the only hard drive on the PC. Doing a IDE drive diagnostic test confirms the presence and RECOGNITION of the new hard drive, however, when i attempt to -load the drice from the Normal, Primary Master Drive, IDE CD-ROM DEVICE or boot to utility partition I am greeted with "strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for set up utility." The phone technician at Dell informed her that she would simply need to plug and play this new hard drive and it would be a more or less automated install. I am confident that the settings are correct in what I have done. I do however, wonder how this hard drive installation can simply be 'plug and play, as the utility partition would be on the old fried hard-drive and not the new one.

Does the hard drive need to have the OS installed from the CD or am I simply missing something silly.
Thanks!

Well, it's a new hard drive, so there is nothing to boot into. You need to install an OS onto the drive from a CD. The new HD does not have the Utility on it. Depending on what DISKS you have have, you might be able to put it back on before you install windows. golieguy 19 http://www.ehow.com/how_4443009_replace-defective-hard-drive.html ,truenorth

Solve : Memory storage stick won't open?

Answer»

Any tricks to get it to display it's contents? It's a Sandisk 4 gig micro cruzerWhen you say it wont open, do you mean you cannot see it in "My Computer"? Try going into disk management and see if it shows up there. If it does try changing the drive letter.I just noticed that it's light is going from normal to dim. Is that an indicator of it failing?ARe you using front or rear USB ports? It shows it's letter designation, it just won't show it's contents when clicked on.Rear and am using a hub as well.Try it without the hub. I have seen issues using HUBS and also with using front ports. Did you look in disk management?I haven't looked in disk management yet. The setup I have has been working well for over two YEARS though.Right click "My computer" then go to "Manage". Then click on "Disk Management" on the left-hand side. Oh the right-hand side you should see your drives. In there your FLASH drive should be listed. Do you see it in there? If so, try right click and clicking "change drive letter". Change it to "Z" or something and see if you can access it.It appears that I've lost all of the content on the drive even though I WENT through the safely eject procedure. I'm going to try and see if it is still usable. I made a false statement in another post, it wasn't the 4 gig stick that had it's light dimming and brightening ( very slowly) it was the 16 gig stick. It was doing it while no ACTIVITY going on.I just have to ask. Are you a shrimp loveing man? I had this happen to me before with a differnt one. Its shown potential faliure from what you said, I recommen getting something like recuva if you cant see the drive at all. It may be possible to save it if your able to get the data off but its like a 50% chance if you wantedd too.Bubba,

Solve : Wiring help?

Answer»

I have a red and black wire. (pic 1)
the red handles audio, the black handles powering speakers.
Is there a way that i can use those but make it so i can have them connected to more than one speaker? Thanks

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]This makes no sense. Speakers have 2 WIRES. You need a crossover NETWORK to power more than 1 speaker from the same 2 wires. You could have CONTINUED the other thread which is the same topic.

Why don't you just tell us what you're trying to do?I am trying to connect more than one speaker together using a stereo system but i have those wires and IM wondering if it is possible to connect more than one speaker with the wires like if theres a kind of splitter?
This may sound stupid, but you should be able to just wire them together in series. It should be really easy.

Some info: http://www.termpro.com/asp/pubs.asp?ID=124I maybe wrong since I CANT ask right know. What you could do is creat a bridge to the other one for each of the sides ground to ground.....

Solve : Which memory for my laptop??

Answer»

This is for my HP 2000 299wm (in specs).
The HP Maintenance and Service GUIDE doesn't tell me much about currently installed memory but the Crucial Memory Scan Tool results are:
Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 8GB
Currently Installed Memory: 3GB
Total Memory Slots: 2
Available Memory Slots: 0
1GB
2GB
Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800 with a maximum of 8GB Kit (4GBx2) per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.
______________________________________
What is the difference between PC3-10600 vs PC3-12800 and which would be better for my machine? The Crucial results don't specify which is presently installed but suggest PC3-10600 @ 1.35v
I was looking at:
Kingston 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 Laptop Memory Model KVR16S11S8/4
and
Kingston 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 Laptop Memory Model KVR16S11/4
What's the difference? I don't see a difference other than:
"ECC: No / Buffered/Registered: Unbuffered"
in the description of the first module listed. Will this work better than PC3-10600 1.35v for me?

As always, thanks for any help.
Mike

HWInfo.com will tell you what memory is currently installed.
http://www.hwinfo.com/download64.html

I saw no difference when I went from 4GB to 8GB, but your results might vary. If your laptop is dual channel capable, you want a matched pair, not necessarily from the same manufacturer. I used hwinfo64 to tell me exactly what the 4GB was before purchasing another 4GB & it does operate in dual-channel mode, even though one is Elpida & the other is Corsair.

The difference between PC3-10600 vs PC3-12800 is clock speed. Faster ones are slower speed capable, but the reverse. You don't need to pay more for a faster one which your laptop cannot run at the faster speed. The 10600 are compatible with your laptop.

The reason I want more ram is because I keep getting a pop-up window saying something about excessive memory use. I run Folding @ Home on 3 PC's @ 100% CPU usage, but I also use this PC for most of my internet ect.
Task manager/performance screen attached is running [emailprotected] at 100% CPU and 4 You Tube video's playing in 3 tabs + 1 other window.
I'd really rather buy 1 module (=6GB total) if that would be enough for now since $ is tight if I can, then buy another 4GB matching module when $ is better.
With that SAID, what should I get based on the hwinfo64 and task manager performance information?
One of these?

Thanks for the help CC!

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]I see the Samsung 1GB module, click the drop down box to see the other module. Alt-PrntScrn will capture the active window instead of the whole desktop. I find it odd that it says "dual channel" when the 2 modules are different size. Since you are at 3GB, now, going to 4GB will see no difference. Go to 8GB or do nothing, $20 vs $40.

There are some memory setting in Win7-64, but I'm on my WinXP box now.
Look here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/66482-memory-set-maximum-amount-used-windows-7-a.html

Does your HP laptop have a dedicated graphics card? Both modules are attached now and I didn't know about 'alt + prt sc'. Thanks.
Are they running in dual channel mode only because they are both 6-6-6-15 / 1.5v = 398.9 MHz, regardless of capacity?
If I install (2) 4GB matching modules @ 9-9-9-24, then it will operate @ 667MHz automatically in my machine with no BIOS changes, correct (I have no memory settings in my BIOS on this machine)?
I'll go ahead and order the 8GB RAM you linked to if I can verify it is 9-9-9-24. Newegg does not give these details like it does for this RAM.
Graphics card is internal that came with the machine (description in Everest Results attached).
i checked the memory settings per your link and it is already set to use max memory (box unchecked).

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]1. Can't run in dual-channel unless they are the same capacity. Could be a HWInfo64 bug.
2. Yes, they will operate at the correct speed. BIOS has no settings for RAM unless motherboard with overclocking capability,
3. The RAM you have selected looks good to me for $35. I paid $25 for 1-4GB a year ago.
4. Don't need Everest, graphics info is at the top right of the HWInfo (I forgot, too).

Since your graphics is onboard, it uses the RAM for graphics memory, so more RAM might help your issue. I wonder how much RAM is being used for video? Win7 continuously reallocates RAM to different resources. My HP laptop is not too different from yours, except coreI3 with on-chip graphics controller. RAM is the same.

I use MSE on my old XP machine too due to that old machine's limited RAM ect. AVG is a resource hog so I may decide to put it on this machine too, but it's actually done pretty good for me with no PROBLEMS on my more powerful machines. If I get an "excessive memory use" pop-up screen after I get 8GB on this one then AVG is gone for sure!

Solve : Colored lines on laptop screen?

Answer»

I have an ACER laptop that is about 2 years old with very little usage. It runs Windows 7 Home Premium. Some time ago on the left side of the monitor screen, about 1.5" from the edge of the screen, a band, about 1.5" wide, made up of very, very fine multi-colored lines, appeared running vertically on the screen. It reminds me of the old Windows Defrag program that showed you how fragmented your drive was with colored lines. Has anyone EVER had this happen and is there a "cure"?
Thank you.................GOOD evening 02bin3

Your issue is not that un-common

Your screen defect can come from a couple of different items.

BAD LCD: can be repaired by replacing the LCD screen assm. This is the most common issue and more than likely your issue
Bad LCD cable: can be repaired by replacing the LCD cable
Bad video chip: Can be repaired but only by a pro that does BGA re-balling
If you have a extended warranty you get it repaired by ACER

Hope this help you, Mike Thank you, hartbeatmr, that sounds a bit above my pay grade so I think it will take a trip to the local computer gurus tomorrow. I've done fairly simple things with my desktop, added memory, new video card, fans, but I don't think I want to mess around with the innards in a laptop. (I would post a "Thank You" to you but for whatever reason, that option doesn't show up for me on this computer.)Hello again 02bin3

You are very welcome and I do agree with you on NOT R&R the laptop. Taking a laptop apart is not easy at all if you have never done it.

One more thing if you have a regular LCD / CRT plug it into the side of that laptop and if the screen is clear than more than likely the laptop LCD is bad and it will not be a cable / chip issue.

Sorry I just thought of this and came back to edit my post.

Just in-case you are not aware of this in the post on the lower left you will see "report to mod, thank XXX, IP" they are a link and not a button. You will not see this while you are creating a post and you will see it only when you are viewing a post.

Hi, the only thing my screen shows in blue is: IP logged and nothing about saying Thank You. I've had this problem for some time and had reported it to "Allan" if I remember correctly, and it just seems to be a peculiarity of my computer and how it views this website.

Good morning jordanrox96 and welcome to CH

From what you have listed you should be OK but I can not really give you 100% yes or no because not all the info was listed.

I am assuming you are talking about 2 sticks of 4gig each for ram and the speed? Voltage for the PS you should be OK.

But a word of advice when you are looking for opinion on part(s) compatibility it would be easier to provide the specs and not the links.

All the parts you have listed are made by companies I use on a regular bases. You may have other folks on CH that will give you there opinion. Good luck on your build.

Let us know how you make out on the build, Mike I do agree with hartbeatmr i am not a computer geek but i have tried and made my own gaming PC your budget is comfortable mine was not that MUCH. but i got a good deal and good service from ACNT. If you can give us your specifications then I can at LEAST give it a shot and try and see what we can do. I also got a good free consultancy from my computer provider:

http://www.acnt.com/system_dept.asp?dept_id=SD-012
http://www.acnt.com/system_dept.asp?dept_id=SD-011

Do let me know what PC you have madeMostly everything looks fine for me.
If you had extra cash you could do RAID 0 with two SSDs for extra speed, or upgrade to twice the RAM.
I am planning on building a gaming PC as WELL. I have already bought most components; I am planning on getting a tiny SSD for the OS and getting a couple of 3TB drives to store all the information I need.

bill. jr I'm sorry, but I find your post virtually unintelligible. You want to make it as easy for us to understand you as possible so we can help - punctuation would make your post easier to read. Also, you say "it says there were x missing" - what does that mean?

PLEASE, take a moment and explain in detail what the problem is. Thanks. You can't simply "swap" an XP HDD from one PC to another...it won't work...

You would need to install XP to the 2nd HDD and then re-install all your programs...Quote

Hello.
I have just joined, so I am hoping that yall experts can give me some expert advice. I have a computer that was given to me, and what I would like to do is set it up along side my other Windows 7 computer, and run Windows XP on it, which is stored on another hard drive.
This is because I have just done some research and found that I have approximately £600 of software and such on the XP drive does not work on Windows 7. Now my problem is when I turn this old computer on with the XP drive INSERTED, it says that there is x missing. What I hope to do is set it up with my old hard drive. However, it came up as instead of the Primary OS drive a secondary drive. Could some one tell me the best way to use the old drive as the main OS drive? The old drive has got all my Windows XP softwares and drivers on it.
Thank you in advance for any help.
Bill, Jr.

I guess I did a mostly decent translation.

Well, I will take my time to answer this.
The old drive that you had, with the Windows XP programs, also contains the drivers from the original computer where it was originally used.
If the new "old laptop from your friend" you received has different drivers than the ones already on the drive, you will need to erase the drivers and reinstall them from a different computer, or from the new laptop itself. Drivers will be obtained from install disks or from the internet.
Also, what is the X missing?
What setup are you using for the drives? Perhaps are they SATA setup?
To boot from the XP drive, you need to mark the other drive as unbootable and mark the XP drive as bootable. You will also need to edit BIOS to automatically boot from the XP drive, as well as possibly disabling the other drive or removing it from the boot order. Some BIOSs support that.
Also, if you want to transfer Windows XP to a new hard drive, you could use a program such as CloneZilla or such to clone the XP disk entirely.

Solve : Want to upgrade a laptop processor?

Answer»

I have gotten a Samsung rv511 A01US it currently has an i3 380M processor and I want to upgrade to an quad core of any kind. It is running Windows 7 H.E. Can it be done?Laptops typically have soldered GPU and CPU chipsets.

So short answer: no.

The i3 has four threads. Is that not enough?I have already taken the laptop apart to see if it was soldered and it wasn't. I don't know if there is a compatible quad core for the motherboard, a Jinmao BA92 07336A. I can't find DETAILS on the motherboard that would TELL me if any quad cores that would fit. There is absolutely no point in upgrading this processor (or any laptop processor.) The board, cpu and memory are all chosen to work together. You will not get a NOTICEABLE increase in performance, and any cpu will cost more than this entry level laptop is worth.
I know what I need and I do need a quad core for this laptop if I am to make use of it. I have my reasons, I am aware that they came as a package set. That doesn't mean they can't have the parts upgraded, now I need to know if there is a quad core I can upgrade too, that is part I can't figure out myself. How to tell which quad core is compatible?Quote from: Remnil on August 11, 2012, 05:05:44 AM

How to tell which quad core is compatible?

No quad core is compatible. You need to understand this: you cannot upgrade to a different processor family sich as i5 or i7. The best you can get is a faster i3. There is no point in doing this. If you want a quad core laptop, sell this one and buy a different one.

I agree with ST.
This is what you have now: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i3/Intel-Core%20i3%20Mobile%20I3-380M%20CP80617004116AH.html
If you can find something that you think is compatible, you can give it a try.

There are 2 quad-core i7's "Other families, Nehalem micro-architecture, Socket G1".
This is one: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i7/Intel-Core%20i7%20Mobile%20Extreme%20Edition%20I7-940XM%20BY80607002526AE.html

Both memory controllers support DDR3-1066.

These cpu's will cost more than the laptop. It's your computer & you can do whatever you want with it.Quote from: Salmon Trout on August 11, 2012, 04:13:16 AM
There is absolutely no point in upgrading this processor (or any laptop processor.) The board, cpu and memory are all chosen to work together. You will not get a noticeable increase in performance, and any cpu will cost more than this entry level laptop is worth.

Not to forget laptops usually have just enough cooling for the chip it is supplied with. To upgrade it should increase heat output under load.Well i for one agree with Salmon...
It's an exercise in futility and not worth the money or effort. For a more cheaper solution, you could buy an Ultrabook with i7, and transfer data from the old PC over to the new one.
That is what I would SUGGEST, is there a specific reason you want to keep the old laptop? Such as great GRAPHICS or something?

Solve : How to recover my full hard dive partitions?

Answer»

How to RECOVER my full hard drive partition
I have a Dell Inspiron N5010 with Seagate Momentus 640 GB hard drive it is out of warranty, that's what the person at Dell, tells me
I think there wrong. I bought it Oct.8, 2011 but not from Dell.
Right now all I have is 129 GB partition active with Windows 7 - 64bit running on it. The reason for that 129 GB partition is, when I first started having problems and nothing would work I placed a Seagate tool disc in this CD drive and started my computer I wanted to erase everything and reinstall the operating system since I couldn't start my system recovery. It asked me what operating system I was going to install and I clicked on Windows 7-64-bit and I believe it stated
that the largest disk partition I could have was 129 GB to install Windows 7 which I clicked on. It then went and executed the operation and then I installed Windows 7-64-bit.
I thought I could go and change everything back after I have a working Windows. I was wrong
I borrowed and installed paragon hard disk manager it indicates:
It has a 100 MB logic disk with 10 MB use for restoring my computer (image restore) but
I can't get to that partition to do the job it was intended for nor can I restore the rest of my hard drive to useful partitions
C:\ drive is 130 GB logic disc with 25.3 GB use for operating system.
It also indicates I have an extended partition of 468 GB which is partitions into a logic desk of
185 GB and an unallocated disc space of 283 GB
I have a DVD disk that came with the laptop it has drivers and utilities but I can't install anything from the DVD disk on to my laptop
I can open up the disk in a DOS format. It shows the DOS Directory and executable files.
How can I restore my hard drive to its original condition?
If you need more information please e-mail me and will try to give you all the information I can.
Any help will be greatly APPRECIATED, THANK you.
“Ike”
Good evening 725abike

OK 1st do you have a good back up of your data.

Use F8 key during boot to get into the Advanced Boot Options menu.
From the Advanced Boot Options chose the Repair Your Computer option.

Click Next and login to your administrator account on the computer. Your administrator account is the account created the first time the computer was turned on.

Click Dell Factory Image Recovery and DataSafe options and follow the onscreen instructions. Please keep one thing in mind the DataSafe should work for saving your data but nothing beats have good reliable back up's that you know are good.

If this is not what you are talking about please let us know using this method will restore the PC back to factory condition.

3rd Party partition managers can be a hit and miss thing. Some folks will swear by this one and someone else will say no that is junk use this one. I have used many different ones over the years and there is not one that I trust 100% so please be careful.

Please let us know how you make out or if you have any questions, Mike Have you used a program to backup the entire hard drive?
If so, you could use the same program to restore everything.
Have you backed up data or your personal files manually to a drive?
I think you could slowly and manually fix the OS partition with that, but not other partitions.
If you haven't made any backups, it might be hard...

Solve : Computer not displaying anything on monitor?

Answer»

I have 2 computers that i haven't used in like 3 years i left them in Puerto Rico while i went to go live in NY they WORKED perfectly fine before i PACKED them up and put them away in their original boxes. Now after 3 years I'm back in PR for vacation and been trying to turn both of them on, they both turn on all the lights come on fans etc... everything but monitor doesn't turn on with either one. I tested the monitor with the laptop and it work's fine turns on completely and displays my windows in it.

On both computers video cards turn on all fans the HDD turns on the power supply. i used different cables and no luck i even used a new HDD that i brough from NY from my working gaming PC. Any help will be greatly appreciated Ty.

Good afternoon merlok and welcome back to CH

Here are a couple of things to check

#1... If the PC's are desktops and there is on-board (VGA / DVI) port but did the monitors get plugged into the add-on Video card instead of the onboard?
#2... In the PC did you try to re-seat the Video card, memory sticks and all power plugs.

Hope this helps, please let us know how you make out. Mike Ty for the fast responce,

1. yes they are both desktops and they have on board and external video cards both computers, i did try on both and nothing :-(
2. i completely took apart the computers and rearmed them again except the CPU After 3 years of non use and undoubtedly not plugged in to power outlet during that time. The CMOS batteries would likely have discharged. Try replacing them. Now as to whether this by itself could be causing your issue i don't know but i would start there.truenorthPuerto Rico is a tropical (hot & humid) location and in such places electronics can deteriorate in use and more so in storage. Fungus, bugs, mold, mildew etc. In particular certain types of capacitor can leak.

ill try these 2 suggestions today and see what i come up with and write back later or tomorrow ty very muchWe shall be keeping our fingers crossed. Something that may help for the future re the tropical conditions.Take your computer or whatever is not going to be used fro a long period and put them in a plastic bag with breathable bags or open containers of silica gel. It is a fantastic moisture absorbing mater4ial. It can be obtained from many sources florists usually stock it. It is a clear small crystal. Usually not expensive.truenorthhey guys OK this is what Ive done so far.
1. tried a new power supply - still nothing
2. change the battery - still nothing :-(

could it be the memory ? as everything powers but still nothing on displayGood morning merlok and welcome back

Are you getting / hearing any beeps? (i.e like 3 short beeps etc)

You put in a new PS (power supply) did the 20/24 pin connecter plugged firmly in to the MoBo
Did the 4/6 pin connecter get plugged into the MoBo this plug is around the CPU (most PS wires are 2 yellow and 2 black)
If the Add-On video card needs power did the plug come loose? this plug is normally on the end of the card
You may have a bad video card

Please let us know how you make out, Mike

Given your awareness for the negative aspects of tropical conditions on electronic equipment i would imagine that in so far as you can you have examined the MOBO for anomalies that might be visible. Before you buy things i would try removing and using a soft cloth GENTLY clean the contacts on 1st the RAM modules and then the video card. If your computers have more than one RAM module in them put them back in one at a time (trying different slots). Let us know how that works.truenorthWas it a new PSU ? ?...or used ?Sorry guys for late reply i am still on vacations :-) been also sick which kinda sucks. Anyways the PSU that i tried was new i will now start trying to connect 1 ram at a time lets hope brb :-)

I will suggest check the temperature of your CPU.There are a number of programs you can use, with Motherboard Monitor making its rounds on the recommendation lists, but I just downloaded is http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html. It's primary function is identifying all of the components of your computer and checking their status, but under SENSORS it can also report CPU, HD, and case temps as well as fan speeds.

I'M sure (thomaspreston) that you do realize that for any of your suggested test results to provide any possibility of assistance as a minimum they MUST be able to be viewed.Given the o/p's account of the state of the 2 computers i wonder how you envisage that happening? truenorth

Now that Guild wars 2 is coming out and i have it pre ordered i would love to be able to play it by the 25th for the 3 day headstart but as my computer sits i cant. what i would like to do is put in a Geforce gtx 550 ti graphics card, if this is possible i have no idea? i assume my computer does not have enough power SUPPLY even if i can do it so i also plan on getting a COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power Plus if its possible to install that? basically i need help to figure out if this is possible and what might be involved in doing so. if you need to know anything else just ask. I would greatly appreciate any help Good morning cak920 and welcome to CH

Some more info would be needed.

What model of PC (Dell C521 / HP A6400F / or custom PC)
I can't give you an answer on the video card because I do not know if you PC has a AGP slot or PCI or PCIx etc
How much memory do you have now.
How big is your PS now
Are you going to be staying with MSE or ?
How fast is the CPU?
Etc

Please try to be just as descriptive as possible, Mike alright. sorry i am not very knowledgeable with this stuff but ill give you what i know for now and will try to find more of the info you mentioned.

model: Compaq Presario
as to the slot i am not sure.
memory: 1 GB, 250GB hard drive
i do not know how bug my ps is but my guess is 300
i am not sure what MSE means?
processor: AMD Athlon 64

that is what i have for nowI think it will most likely be possible to upgrade, but I don't see enough information to know.
I am assuming that you are trying to replace the graphics card.
Please tell the specs of the computer. The upgrade will be possible if:

  • The graphics card and the motherboard is compatible (Is there a PCI-E slot on the motherboard if the graphics device requires one?, etc)
  • There is enough space in the computer (The graphics device fits inside the computer)
  • The driver for the graphics device is compatible with the Operating System in use.
As said, the memory and processor will depend as well, and for such a game, at least 4GB of RAM and maybe a Quad Core or so might be best.

EDIT:
I just got outposted twice... lol
Only 1GB of memory? Your computer and/or your game might crash several hundred times while playing... my best advice is to re-make the entire computer...
Maybe with:
GIGABYTE GeForce Graphics - about $200
ASUS or similar motherboard - about $200
At least a 500GB HDD - about $75
Ivy Bridge Intel i7 - about $250
16GB DDR3 Memory - about $300
A nice case - about $100
Power - about $150
Other wires, fans, displays and such - about $250
It's not the cheapest stuff out there, but if you build a computer like that, it will most likely last a while.hmm definately dont wanna crash all the time. the reason i chose those 2 specific things are because i want to use them to build a new computer but was hoping i could use them in my current one until i can afford the whole build. if you wanna check it out and give me your thoughts on it you can find it here: http://www.geforce.com/optimize/guides/how-to-build-a-kick-*censored*-crysis-2-pc-for-under-600/#2 it is a budget gaming build that i have heard actually performs quite nice. but as i said i don't have a ton of knowledge about the technical stuff so it would be great to hear your opinions about that buildThe computer will be averagely good for most games. I guess it might be just nice to do exactly as the guide says.
If the motherboard of your computer doesn't support enough RAM, you would have to change the motherboard, then you would have to change the processor, etc.
If you are allowed to install the game multiple times, you could try it once on your laptop as is, and see if it WORKS. If not, maybe you could install the game to an EXTERNAL hard drive or something...
Could you check what slots there are on the motherboard (PCI, PCI-E) and what slot the graphics card plugs in to?just found that my computer has a PCI slot and the card requires PCI-E. wondering if i can buy half of the build and use a few parts from my current computer just to get a working one until i can afford the whole buildIn short ...for newer games you are gonna need a newer PC...I know patio the problem is i cant afford much which is why i wanna build the cheap gaming system. an i just looked and it seems i looked at it WRONG. i have a pci express slot not just pci so the graphic card should work if i have enough power supply.

Monitor: LCD, Plug and Play monitor

Manufacturer: standard monitor type

Hello,

I am now experiencing problems with my PC after 7/8 years.

Each time I switch it on the fan is running REALLY loud; followed by two clicks and after that the power light on the monitor turns from solid green to solid amber and on the screen it comes up with no signal.

The base unit always has a solid green light.

I carried out a power supply test and the light on the back had a solid green light so that is working fine.

Checked the fans and they are working fine.

I have cleaned it thoroughly with the appropriate spray, opened it up and cleaned out the heat sink and even cleaned off the thermo paste and added a fresh batch.

Guess what!! It did not make one difference.

Is it anything to do with the video mode? Before this problem started I was checking to see if the second VGA slot was enabled and plugged it in and found that it wasn't. Each time I switched the cables I always had the machine switched off. When I plugged the VGA cable back in its original slot it was working fine. Next day after this problem cropped up.

Could it be the hard drive as it does make 2 click sounds? Motherboard maybe??

There was a problem with my start up menu a few weeks before this problem, the second half of the menu was all black. Tried to change the VIEWS and that listed everything but the names were missing from programs list. That problem resolved itself though - not sure if was related to this
Good morning meaner02 and welcome back to CH

If I am reading your POST correct the PC is not booting and the monitor light stays orange

#1... Most monitors that start green and then go orange that means no video signal.
#2... Are you using or is there a video card in a slot. So the on-board video is no longer in use?
#3... I have repaired 100's of the SR1000 with booting issues and the issue was almost always bad caps and they will look like this these bad caps will be around the CPU and by the PCI slots please look at all caps on the MOBO.
#4... The green light in the back of your computer on the PS (powers supply) that green light just means there is power coming into the PC it does not mean there is power going to the motherboard. Do you have another PS to test with or can you borrow one?

Hope this helps you and please let us know how you make out, Mike

Solve : Cloning large dynamic HDD to small basic HDD, need help.?

Answer»

My Windows 1TB hard drive decided to half-break a couple of days ago. The hard drive is spinning extremely slowly, and Windows Explorer keeps crashing unless I boot into Safe Mode.
I figured that I needed to get Windows to a new Hard Drive as SOON as possible, and I bought myself a 750GB hard drive.
I first tried to use a hard disk cloning device to clone the 1TB drive to the 750GB drive, but it obviously didn't work.
I read many tutorials online, and I found that CloneZilla will clone disks and partitions, and if I could shrink down the OS partition and keep the actual usage of the disk under 750GB (and leave 250GB unallocated), I could copy each of the Recovery, System Reserved, HP-TOOLS, and the C:\ partitions over to the new disk. I also learned that I could change a Dynamic Disk to a BASIC Disk without losing data by editing Hex Data, but it would be quite risky.

Right now:

  • The 1TB disk with Windows on it is half broken.
  • The 1TB disk with Windows is converted to Dynamic.
  • The 750GB disk is empty and is still a basic disk.
  • The 750GB disk doesn't seem to be convertable to dynamic.
  • The 750GB disk is connectable to COMPUTERS via USB, hence it is docked to a disk cloner/hub.
  • The 750GB disk shows up with the connector hub name. (JMicron USB Mass Storage Device)
  • The C:\ partition is in the middle, if I have to shrink it, I will have to use EaseUS Partition Manager to move the unallocated space to the end.
  • I have two laptops, a hub to connect up to two hard drives, two USB disks of 1GB and 4GB, and there is an optical drive on one of the laptops.

So, I need to somehow get Windows and all the partitions over to the new, faster, smaller hard drive.
What is the best way to get all the partitions over to the new hard disk?
A couple of things I thought of were:
  • Edit Hex Data and change the dynamic disk to a basic disk, and copy partitions
  • Edit Hex Data and change the basic disk to a dynamic disk, and copy partitions
  • If I really have to, I will insert the new hard drive, and use some recovery disks to reinstall Windows and its drivers...
What is the best way to "clone" the larger disk to the smaller disk, and could you PLEASE explain (mostly) step by step?

Thanks,
SarcasticphoenixMost drive manufacturers these days suppy cloning software to replicate the data from a prior drive to the new drive you bought from them. However if you have 900GB of 1TB full and are trying to squeeze it into 750GB thats not going to work. Generally these tools work great for smaller drives being cloned over to larger drives, but not the other way around.

If you want to transfer data from 1TB to the 750GB, I would install a clean build OS to the 750GB, then add the 1TB as a slave. Then use windows to transfer the data from the 1TB to the 750GB with most important data first, least important data last, SINCE this drive could fail at any time as you have had problems with it.

From my past experience using cloning software Ghost 2003 was great for Windows XP and older operating systems, but since then I have been using Seagate's clone software to create an exact same copy drive to drive. Only catch with these tools is that you have to have a drive present that is covered by this tool as for the tools look to make sure you are using it for their drives only. Otherwise you will get a message similar to No Valid Drive Present or something like that or Seagate Drive not detected as a way to avoid their software for being used with competetors drives. So you can have a Maxtor and a Seagate and it will be happy, but if you have a Maxtor and western Digital it probably wont work unless Seagate now recognized Maxtor as their own since they bought out Maxtor and offer replacement of Maxtor drives as I found out to my benefit of a 250GB drive which expired under the 3 year maxtor replacement warranty, but seagate offered 5 years after the buyout so a drive that was a paperweight was now one that I could get a replacement for for just $5 shipping.

Solve : CD Drive not reading?

Answer»

I have a compaq nx625 running windows xp. Its running SLUGGISH and I'm trying to reinstall windows on it with no luck. I tried making my computer boot from the CD and it kept turning on and off. I then TOOK the disk out it started up OK I tried a music CD it didn't read it. I checked and its reading the CD drive in the computer. Any idea what I could do to fix this problem?Borrow another OPTICAL drive and swap it in there...you'll know right away if it needs replaced...which it probably does...

Solve : Computer make a noise like it's about to shutdown and causes pauses in game.?

Answer» EVERY so often my computer makes a clicking sound that is similar sound to when it shuts down, like the sound you get right at the last moment before power off. When this happens there is always a brief pause in a game I am PLAYING and then game resumes. Can anyone tell me what they think this could be?

I was thinking psu myself but started to rule this out because it doesn't ever reboot. Do you think it could still be the power supply still because I was starting to think it could be the hard drive. I will CHECK the psu but do you know of a program that will fully check the hard drive aswell? I have done the usual test for bad sectors and found nothing but I want something that will give it a better test.If your drive is a seagate they have good tools that are free. Otherwise I BELIEVE the other makes should have tools for theirs as well. The tool can be burned to a CD or DVD and boot from it and then run full diagnostics that are beyond what windows has built into it.

It would be interesting if its your hard drive and windows has nothing in the logs for a write failure etc in the event logs. Usually the event logs start to fill with complaints before a drive fails this way. The last drive that failed on me had 12 days of warnings before it crashed hard and no warnings on the GUI, just event log entries. Leave it to Windows to record an event multiple times that should be brought to a users attention and NOT...LOL S.M.A.R.T also didnt detect this warning which was odd. No hard drive warnings on boot and not disabled in BIOS for S.M.A.R.T reporting.I'll bet 10 Bucks the clik sound is from a monitor on it's way out...
Best way to find out is borrow one overnite and see if the same thing happens or not...Quote from: DaveLembke on August 15, 2012, 11:23:41 AM

Any idea where I can get tools for a Raptor HD?

@Patio - I don't believe it's the monitor because the click comes from the tower not the monitor. I don't see anything wrong at all with the monitor but what makes you think it could be this?Overclocking maybe, have you tried reverting to stock settings?

Solve : Cant boot to dvd to install os?

Answer»

Hi all,
I put put together my first gaming rig together today, and it works just fine.
But every time i try to install windows 8 beta I'm given
"Reboot and select PROPER boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"
I have the boot PRIORITIES set for the DVD drive and all of my connections are fine
is this a problem with the DVD? or is it the motherboard's problem?Do you have other bootable CDS available? Where does the Windows 8 disc coming from? You may need to redownload the ISO file just to make sure its just a corrupt copy. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/download/Just to state basic mistakes,

  • Make sure you have burned the ISO file using a PROGRAM such as ImgBurn, and you haven't just "copied and pasted the iso to the dvd"
  • Make sure the optical drive is connected and set up.
If those aren't the solutions, just reburn the DVD or redownload the ISO file.

EDIT:
Forgot the main STUFF! Make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the DVD.

Solve : Maintaining laptop performance for games on battery power?

Answer»

Hello,

I've been shopping for a laptop that meets the GD adjusted requirements for Guild Wars 2 (listed here: http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=684&game=Guild%20Wars%202) and can play the game with respectable settings on battery power. I know the cpu/gpu performance on most laptops tends to DROP dramatically on battery power, so I was wondering if plugging in to an external charger like the one listed here:http://www.amazon.com/Capacity-33600mAh-Portable-External-Notebooks/dp/B005IU34FU/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1345319593&sr=8-5&keywords=external+laptop+charger might help. Alternatively, I'm aware that there are some laptops out there that are designed specifically with maintaining performance on battery power in mind, like the Alienware Mx11, or there may even be a software solution to the problem. I'd appreciate any info or suggestions.

Thanks! Good evening QuasiKomodo and welcome to CH

Nice choice on the laptop looks great. The bad part is for heavy gaming and battery life is almost a oxymoron. When a PC is heavily used the battery takes a beating. My recommendation's would be buy.

#1...Buy as much MEMORY as you can afford
#2...fastest CPU
#3...fastest GPU
#4...get the BIGGEST battery possible
#5...also get a SSD hard drive (solid state drive)

The reason for the above is the easier a PC runs an app / game the better it will be on a battery if that makes since and also shut off LIGHTED keyboards and only have the NECESSARY programs running in the back ground.

Last I knew Alienware did have a battery optimizer that used to come with the laptops and there may be a 3rd party tools but none that I trust. There may some other folks on CH that may have one that they would say works.

Hope this helps,Mike

Solve : Keyboard problem( ESC and CTRL)?

Answer»

I was playing a game, and suddenly i noticed my ESC button doesn't work( i tryed to restart a level but couldn't access menu). So i tryed ctrl alt del , it didn't work either. I restarted pc , replugged keyboard, reinstalled drivers, still nothing. Downloaded testing program , it showed that these buttons just don't respond: ESC , left CTRL , F4 , F5 , F6. I got no idea what happened, it was all working fine one moment, i was driving a game on steering wheel , and when i tryed to restart (worked 10mins before) i just couldn't access menu. Also tryed unplugging steering wheel , reinstalling it's drivers, nothing works. Looking foward to your answers, thanks .
EDIT: Keyboard mark : Chicony, model kb-0833.GOOD afternoon Steerer and WELCOME to CH

If the Key Board is USB powered try using a different USB port. If you have front ports try it there. Most of the time when key boards start to fail the left hand keys will start to go first for some reason. Do those buttons stop working only in the game but work ok in WORD or WORKS etc.
Did anything get spilled on the keyboard that you know of? The only good thing about this is when you need to buy new keyboard are fairly cheap like 50 to 20 dollars.

Hope this helps, please let us know how you make out, Mike
Thanks for the welcome .
The Key Board uses roundy entrace , and I got only 1 on the back , so i can't really try that. ...-Well the button just stopped working while i was playing , but it doesn't work at all anymore. Key Board test program showed that these buttons don't respond. Tryed in word, 1 other game, they don't work :/ . Well..... something did get spilled.. yogurt. But it was long ago , and i cleaned it well, and it worked perfectly... untill today. I just don't understand what did set this off .. i was using it normally , stoped working the other second.
Thanks for answering still .. sorry if my English is a bit hard to understand, i am working on it . Best regards,Luka.Good afternoon Luka and welcome back to CH

No apologies are NEEDED and you are very welcome. Your English is just fine and the round plug you are talking about is a PS2 CONNECTOR just in-case you didn't know. Well sorry about your keyboard but at least they are not very expensive.

Have a good afternoon, Mike

Solve : My laptop screen is divided in 4 and i can't change it?

Answer»

I was watching a movie and i got a blue screen. After that my computer restarts and the screen is divided in almost four parts (all showing the same) and i can't change it and the quality is really bad!
You think is related with the graphic board?
I have an ASUS F3SC with 5 years old

Please help, i'm outside my country and i need my laptop to work!Good morning Xico3870 and welcome to CH

Restart your PC and go into safe mode and I would do a scan on your PC with your AV suite (anti virus suite). To get into safe mode when you restart your PC by TAPPING F8.
Next Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike thanks for helping me...

Good morning Xico3870 and welcome back

Sorry about #1 you did have the model listed I missed that

#1... When you installed W7 did you go to Asus and get drivers for the laptop or did you use only the ones that W7 installed for you.
#2... Also in the device manager is there any yellow ! or red devices
#3... How long ago did you install W7 (ruffly) and how has the laptop been since you installed W7 any issues?

Than you, Mike
#1...I needed to get some drivers from Asus
#2...My graphic board has an yellow sing (NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G)
"The windwos stop the device, because some problems were reported (Code43 )"

#3...I have for 1 year and i never had any problem, my computer got better then it was before.Good morning again

OK Asus does not make W7 drivers but they do have vista ones. You should be OK using them. You have 32 bit version of windows so download the 32 bit drivers. Like I said you should be OK but if possible I would back up your data first (pic's , Doc's etc) first just to be safe. Also I would create a restore point also before begin.

Here is the link http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=F3Sc&p=3&s=78.
Here is the way I always install drivers after the OS is installed.
Chipset
Video
Sound
Now with Asus that has wireless / bluetooth devices always install the "wireless console" first then install the wireless card driver then the bluetooth
If you have a card reader install the ricoh install that as well.
Modem
Finger print driver if you have one.
Then the rest of the devices that you have.

Please make sure that any and all drivers you try to install are for your hardware (i.e if you have Azurewave get that one if you have Intel get that one)

This should help you and take care of your issue but please keep one thing in mind you still may have a hardware issue. But right now windows in not happy with the drivers so on and off you have had blue screens. If the incorrect or wrong drivers are used then there is and can be a problem. thank you very much...
i'll give you the feed back as son as i finish everything.

Xico

Solve : Help-I can't hear you?

Answer»

I was ATTEMPTING to lower the sound volume on my laptop recently. When clicking the speaker icon on my taskbar I GO no reaction, so I THOUGHT that I was simply disabling the speakers. Apparently not, now when I go to the speaker icon it says "No Audio Output Device is Installed. What should I do?Try disconnecting and reconnecting the speakers if they are removable. I had a similar issue once, and that solved the problem.
Also, check in device manager (Start > Right click Computer > Manage > Devices) to see if the audio device is showing up, maybe you will need to reinstall drivers.Quote from: sarcasticphoenix on AUGUST 15, 2012, 08:24:45 PM

Its a laptop with integrated speakers. No audio device in device mgr. ]
Check the sound properties and device manager first. What laptop is it?Look in device manager. Are there any yellow or red symbols?

Also, What is new or different since the last time EVERYTHING worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Solve : No Boot Media?

Answer»

Hey all. A little issue I am having with my Laptop. ASUS N61JQ, i7, 8GB ram, put an OCZ Petrol SSD drive in about 3 MONTHS ago. Recently, when I boot, I get to the ASUS splash page where it hangs for a few MINUTES and then I get "No boot media". I though I may have had a corrupt OS so I reinstalled an image I had and the same issue occurs. It seems to occur more frequently as time goes on. I did a little search on OCZ Petrol SSD's and the response does not make me happy. I have also looked for OCZ diagnostic tools and have come up empty. Does this sound like the SSD is failing or am I missing something here. Your thoughs would be much appreciated. If you are getting the message "No Boot Media", the problem is the SSD. Can you put the OLD HDD back in?I bought another drive last night and will test it tonight.

Solve : iMac vs Gaming PC?

Answer»

Hello everyone!

Recently i decided on getting myself a new computer. However i am stuck between getting an 27'' iMac or a custom build pc, but currently leaning towards the iMac.
I will be using the computer for gaming and searching the internet, but I also for schoolwork etc. Since I will mostly be playing World of Warcraft I think i should be fine with the iMac since the GAME is not as heavy as Battlefield 3 for example.
I know in most cases a PC would be better for gaming, but i FIGURED since I wont be playing any really heavy games it should be okay with either of the two.
If i am getting the iMac, this would be the specs i'd be looking at:

3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
1TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

With these specs I should pretty much be able to max out World of Warcraft if im not mistaken?
Will and iMac last for these type of games, or should i consider buying a PC instead?

I am a PC guy myself, but dont let me bias your decision.

When it comes to World of Warcraft the one technical feature that has impressed me is that they engineer it to be as compatible with older hardware as possible. They dont make an expansion that means you need to upgrade from a dual to a quadcore for example as well as have to replace your 2 year old video card. While you may not be able to max out your settings over time, with this game you should be able to slowly select lesser and lesser graphics requirements over say the next 4 years or so and probably on the 5th year be looking towards a newer graphics adapter. My one friend has an older iMac with GeForce 9800 and he is able to run cataclysm on max settings with a frame RATE between 20 and 60fps depending on what is going on in the environment that the graphics card is trying to render. However I have a spare laptop that is a Core 2 Duo and GeForce 7300 from 2006 that can only play the game on lowest graphics settings otherwise the frame rate is a crawling 4 to 6 frames per second which is unbearable. On the lowest settings with the GeForce 7300 on that older laptop I get 15 to 20 frames per second which is ok, but not the best.

The iMac is the way to go if thats what you really want. My preference is PC because I play lots of games and dont have to worry about compatability issues with the games I play which are designed for PC vs ported for Mac OS execution. I also am not an AVERAGE computer user, I will mix and match parts to get better performance and save from lining Apple's WALLET with their markup. I like PC's still being very universal in construction which makes them easy and cheap to fix as well as upgrade. If your talking security, other than Linux, Apple is the way to go in my opinion. Thanks a lot for the reply, looking at specs however, I should be able to max out WoW even when Mists of Pandaria hits? Right now I own an 2.26ghz laptop with a crappy graphics card, so I am only able to play at Good with around 30-40 fps, and since WoW will be my main game I which to experience it at full capacity

so i went to the on board one and still more errors

I would try reinstalling the OS clean. If it fails clean, then I would suspect a motherboard issue in RELATION to the PCI BUS, so new Motherboard. Have you removed all extra cards except for the video card if required for video and tried to run this board on bare minimum without extra cards to see if the integrated NIC acts up then?i have done that fresh install 10 times with all on board stuff all factory ..i guess the mobo died lolYou already have a thread on this problem. Please do not start multiple threads - it is confusing and causes DUPLICATION of efforts. I'm locking this thread.

Solve : No drives work?

Answer»

I recently bought a Dell Dimension 4550 motherboard that began by booting to the point where it says Primary Drive 0 not found.

The Primary Drive is recognized in bios, as well as as the cd drives, and it also passes the IDE diagnostic.

The Dell diagnosic lights show three green, and the far right one is yellow. I checked all the cables, which are tight.

I tried resetting the cmos, both by changing the jumper and removing the battery for ten minutes.

The primary hard drive is set to auto, the secondary is set to off in bios.

It is able to use the pci video card, but not the agp.

I started to use the installation disk, but none of the cd drives will open.

After working on it, it now boots to setup, the hard drive chatters, then pings, and it starts all over.

I am using the hard drive right now in a Dell Optiplex 150, so it obviously works

The specs are..

Win XP Home Edition
Intel Pentium 4 2.533-Z/512/533
Intel 845PE chipset
1 stick of 512 DDR SDR Ram
NVIDIA GeForce2 mx/mx 400 64mb memory
Maxtor 5T040H4

I hope this is enough information, no doubt there is something I have overlooked though. I can't help but feel that there is one little setting, some simple thing I haven't tried. lol

Thanks for the help.

Mike

Good evening GreyWeirCat and welcome to CH

OK here are somethings to check as I have one of these PC's that i use just for GHOSTING and data back-ups

#1... In the BIOS (to get the the BIOS press F2) and when you are in there look at the "hard drive 0 & 1" if you have 2 hard drives both should say "hard drive" if you have just one hard drive than the primary drive 0 should say "hard drive" and primary drive 1 should be set to "off" I know you said you did this already.
#2... the same thing for the CD drives as above.
#3... go down to Boot sequence and in there you should see a check mark next to the hard drive and CD drive.
#4... If the PC has the original IDE cables the primary connector is the second from the end. Unlike standard IDE cables where the primary HD is last one the cable.
#5... Make sure the jumpers are set correct.
#6... On the CD drives make sure the drives have both cables. Power and data
#7... You will most likely have to do a fresh install other wise the PC will blue screen

Here is the Dell light diagnostic page. HTTP://support.dell.com/support/edocs/SYSTEMS/dim4550/advanced.htm

Please let us know how you make out, Mike
OK, and will do! Out of curiosity, how will I do a fresh install if the CD tray doesn't come out? I have never done this before, will the bios recognize a formatted hard drive? Sorry if this should be obvious to me. I should have mentioned I checked all the above, and will proceed to number 7.

I like this forum already! Thanks hartbeatmr.

MikeGood evening GreyWeirCat and welcome back

OK the bad news form what you are saying the Cd drive it self is bad / defective so in order to repair or do a fresh install you would have to REPLACE the CD drive. If you look at the front of the cd drive does the light blink / flash or is there no light as if it is dead. If the light does flash you may be able to open it by using a paper clip in the eject hole in the front face like this http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTWhU1Yau_d9JlylJs3K3h118gv6ExnYdB rpL6Vb2mWwWLYR6WT

The dell 4550 BIOS does not support booting by external drives, usb flash drives etc. The replacement cd drive must be IDE and not sata.

Hope this helps you, Mike I will try some CD-RW and CD players I have from past PC's.

Thanks for the REPLY! I will post the results, it may take until tomorrow though.

Mike

Solve : IDE Drive Cableing Confusion?

Answer»

I had bought a SYBA IDE PCI IT8212 Bootable card to replace the bad IDE port on my motherboard. The unit has three IDE Drives an One DVD Reader/Burner up till this point I was unsure what the issue was with not being able to get it to read disks. I'm not sure what Cable is being used to attach the disk drive to the card. However, if I use something like a 80 pin IDE Cable it posts that it is slower then what is required an I lose the drive in Windows What OS is system?
What is the Hard Drive Make/Model?

According to this link its fully backwards compatible to the oldest IDE drives out there. Are you setting the jumpers CORRECT? Jumper setting for CS "Cable Select" when it should be Master or Slave can lead to strangeness.

http://www.sybausa.com/productInfo.php?iid=503

Maxtor/

There useing seperate cables an there too far apart to use the same cable. Thing is that if I use the know good cable with the harddrive it has no issues in windows but, the Disk Drive will lock the system up. If its the other way the DVD Drive works but, the harddrive isnt there.Replace all IDE cables with 80 pin ones...NEW...don't use all the garbage ones you get from the scrap heap...
If there is no change then you will realise you bought one of the cheapest controller CARDS you can find...you get what you pay for.The other thing is that Im not sure how to tell which, are 80 pin. I think the cable came with the card thats there. I used even a brand new cable an still had the same issue. Im not useing the RAID features just the bootable one I see a difference in the two there being that the 80 is bigger an has that hole through one of the pins. However, I have a 40 an I gusse an 80 an they look the same too me :/Good morning Ryuk

Ok I have bought those and it as always a big pain

#1... NO CD / DVD drives can be used on these cards only hard drives!!!!
#2... Use 80 pin cables and set jumpers correct to CS
#3... The blue IDE connector is primary the white is secondary channel
#4... It will only run as RAID not IDE
#5... I have tired with my card to flash it for IDE only and not raid and it was always a big headache it always reverted back to raid
#6... I know you want it to be used as IDE but Install the raid drivers and plug the drives in and the OS will see them and use them.

Good luck, let us know how you make out, Mike When I have a disk it says there is a bootable one in there an will boot from it. It also, lists it in the spec's that it can. Each drive is useing its own cable. I asked a local tech an he gave me a cable. Think it's that MINE were changed out too much. Seems that both drives workQuote

Replace all IDE cables with 80 pin ones...NEW...don't use all the garbage ones you get from the scrap heap...

Solve : Looking for some advice, issues with new computer, gift for a friend.?

Answer»

I recently purchased a gift for a friend, a refurbished Gateway SX2370-UR10P from AMAZON (not rich, it was the best I could afford). I think I'm going to have to return it, but I just thought I'd confirm my fears before I really get into that (I have filed for a return).

Anyway, the computer was supplied with a keyboard and mouse, but not a monitor. That's okay, because she already had one. Anyway, this might be a monitor problem, but I doubt it... I'm just MENTIONING this because it might be pertinent information.

If we plug the (VGA) monitor in and try to boot it, we get a beep and a non-blinking cursor at the top-left of the screen. I'm not sure what this means for this computer. We've tried letting it boot and then plugging in the monitor, but the monitor goes into sleep mode. (No signal, I think?)

Now, I think it's the computer, because the BIOS post text isn't showing up.

The computer may not be VGA compatible, despite the VGA port (some are like that, I've seen it before), but even if that was the case then at least we'd actually get a bit of BIOS post text or something, wouldn't we?

If you have -any- ideas, we'd be more than happy to try them. I won't open the computer though because that would invalidate the warranty we have with it, and thus make my chances of returning it slim.

I really, really APPRECIATE any help you can provide. As you can guess, I'm feeling fairly horrible right now, with this being a gift for a friend. But I'm also fairly sure this is a dud, I just need a CONFIRMATION.

---

Oh, the OS is Windows 7, by the way. I just didn't know whether that'd even be worth mentioning because we don't get that far.

---

Also wanted to note that we've tested another (VGA) monitor and got the same results with that one, too. And that both monitors work fine on her old computer.I do not know too much about monitor problems, but the last time my laptop's screen decided to not display anything, I unplugged it and removed the battery, and following another guide, I pressed and held the power button for about 45 seconds, and let the laptop sit there for about 30 more seconds. It solved the problem, and I was able to see everything on the screen again.
I don't know if this will help at all, but it worked for me, maybe it will work on a different computer as well.Good evening S.Davies and welcome to CH

I really don't think the post would help because he is talking about a laptop and S.Davies has a desktop Quote from: sarcasticphoenix on August 15, 2012, 08:21:45 PM

But on to your question if at all you are getting a cursor in the top corner than the PC is not able to boot as it would normally. The other dead give away is not getting a gateway logo etc. I know you said that you don't want to open it because you would void your warranty. Most PC companies will not void your warranty because you want to upgrade say memory etc in the future but If you would open the PC up and make sure the hard drive cables are in place, the memory is seated etc. Then I would look in the BIOS and make sure it was set to boot to the hard drive 1st.

Well if you decide you would like some help please come back and let us know, Mike

Solve : Cant add a drive? whats going on??

Answer»

Thank you for looking at my thread.
I have a Dell computer, running, fully operational with Win 95 loaded on a small drive, a Western DIGITAL 1.19 gig. Its full of programs.
So I decided to add another drive to it, a Seagate 10 gig, it has Windows 2000 on it.

So from what I know, all I have to do to add a drive is, make sure the jumper is set correctly, (maybe Ive got this jumper set incorrectly, I cant find anything in the CH guides for this).
Connect to a power source, add the cable (maybe I cant connect a drive onto the same cable as the C: Drive) and switch on computer.

Now I know what your going to say.... Why dont I use the 10 gig drive as the C: drive ... right.. well I dont want to.
I dont mind putting a smaller drive in this one but I want the 10 gig for a different computer.
I have other drives that can go in this one.
The thing is, that I need to be able to do this successfully before I try to add different drives.

Anyway I went into add new hardware and detect so on, but windows came back with no new hardware.
This is the first time Ive had the time to myself to play with this sort of thing and is my first attempt at getting a computer running this way.

Oh for those who would say use the Seagate 10 gig drive.... I did that too, but the drive just cycled through the POST. It goes to win2000 start up, (you know the bars across the bottom of the screen that shows the progress of the O/S load process), and then reboots to the post and starts again.

So... What am I doing wrong then?

Building a computer is just BEYOND me Im afraid at this point because,
Im no Guru. The 2 G should be jumpered as master/ w slave present...
The 10G should be jumpered as slave.

Then hook them as follows:

MB=======================================10G=======2G
motherboard slave master. If you have already done exactly as Patio has id, here is the next thing to try.
(Some older HDDs will never work right with another drive on the same cable.)

You put you new drive on the second cable, the one that foes to the CD-ROM. For now, leave the CD drive off the cable until we gets things to work.
Reboot yur system and go into the BIOS. Get familiar with how you BIOS works. There is some way to hve the BIOS tell you what is on the second cable. If does not see the new drive on the second cable, something is wrong.

Also, the procedure you are doing is OK for Windows 95, BUT!
Here is the BUT. Windows 95 does not support FAT32.

Quote

Three major releases of Windows 95 were made. The first edition does not support FAT32, nor enhanced FAT (for support beyond 8 GB). OSR2 is a separate version, but was never provided as a free upgrade.

Do you have OSR2 ?

Quote
Windows 95 does not support FAT32.

Just to clarify...

Quote
Version Number Version Supports FAT32?
4.00.950 Original Version of Windows 95 No
4.00.950a Original version of Win95 with Service Pack #1 installed No
4.00.1111 OEM-only release of Win95 with FAT32 support (known as OSR2 or Win95b) Yes
4.00.1212 OEM-only release of Win95 with FAT32 & USB support (known as OSR2.1 or Win95c) Yes

To determine what ver. is installed in Windows Explorer clik Help/About WindowsWindows 2000 uses NTFS, which Windows 95, in any incarnation, will not support.

The key to getting it recognized properly by Windows 95 is to repartition the drive. All data from the W2K install will be lost.

reboot Windows 95 into MS-DOS mode.
type fdisk.

Now you should be presented with a menu containing 5 options- to start, you want to select option 5, "Change Current Fixed Disk Drive". If this is the second physical drive (which by your description it is) you will want to enter 2 here, but do double-check the listing presented by fdisk to select the proper disk.

With the W2K drive selected, you can now proceed to delete the partition. Note that although Windows 95 should recognize the full size of the drive you might only be able to create 2GB FAT partitions if you are using a pre OSR2 win95.

In any case, proceed to delete the partition(s) present on that drive, (option 3). If it says "no partitions to delete", proceed to creation. Otherwise, delete the partitions present.

Now proceed to create new partition(s) using option 1. Note that you can create 4 "Primary DOS partitions" on that drive. (difference between Primary and extended pretty much being that extended partitions cannot be set as active). After that, you can create an extended partition consuming as much space as possible and create the rest of the partitions that way.

I hope this helps. Just make sure on the deletion pages that you aren't looking at C: partition, and you should be fine.

of course- any problems and just post back and we'll see what we can do Just to clarify Win2K also had a FAT32 option.Quote from: patio on February 17, 2009, 06:32:40 PM
Just to clarify Win2K also had a FAT32 option.

true, but given the circumstances it could be either, and really the same info applies in both cases- it definitely appears to not be recognized, and assuming it is properly installed (which can be confirmed or denied during the POST or by fdisk) a very plausible avenue of attack.

Now if he has OSR2...I'm just having random moments of clarity...that's all....... Maybe he should clarify his objective. In general, having a dual-boot of Windows 98 and Windows 2000 would be a better choice.
Getting a real Windows 95 OSR2 disk is had to do.

SO, does he have a real need for Windows 95?
Or is it just a challenge to see if it can be done?

As I DIMLY recall, both Captain Keen and Jill of the jungle work well on Windows 98.
And if you had all the series of those two games,
What else would you want?
I don't think he wants to dual boot, and if he did things would get messy.

And it's Commander keen Billy Blaze, really....Wow Patio, Geek-9pm and BC_Programmer, thank you for your responses everyone.
I understand a lot better now what Im doing.

Patio I see the way it should be set up correctly... needless to say I didnt set it up that way, so thanks for that explanation and graphic.
I'll check those numerics when I can to see if the O/S is original or win95 1, 2, 2.1 as I go through all of this.
In no particular order, to make it clearer for all, I dont need or want a dual boot. It was just that the two drives have different O/S's on them. I just wanted to improve the size total of the drive, and get another drive to work in the computer..
I have other drives of about 4 Gig I can use, so I'll get rid of the 10 for this computer and save it for a more modern build then.

Now I did see on the screen at one stage something about not a Fat32, so I guess that answers one query.
Geek - 9pm, yes I'll try that way too of setting them up..ie: on a different cable, (seeing the CD drive doesnt actually work at this time). The drawer work eject, so a change required there I found out. May as well try the other drive set up one that cable.

BC_Programmer, a full and complete response as always, with explanations of "what happens when I" .....oops didnt want to do that.
So saved a lot of heartache for me there thanks.Thank you all for the help.
I have a bit of work to go through now to see if I can make this sucker fly.
Once again thank you for the clarity of your answers.
ImnoGuru Hope you get it to work right for what
you want. You mentioned a problem
with the CD ROM ejection.
That is a very old issue,
but the drive may still be sue full.

{edit to reduce louness.}

There was an additional
tool needed in Windows 95,
but was never officially released
Is was the CD eject tool.
The software implementation
did not work well
and never got into beta.
However, the hardware had
no such issues. But for
reasons not reveled the
hardware was not released.
There was an issue about the parent rights.
But sience it has now been
over 17 years, you can have one of these
without paying any royalties.

That's unneccessarily LOUD...

Also- all the info presented re: fdisk should be just as APPLICABLE with the 4GB. I'm sure you can connect the dots and realize that in that case it will be what I referred to as the W2K drive in my post Yes Geek-9pm, I had that tool when I first had problems many years ago.
I have one in an old toolbox I found under a bench in the garage. So I'll just dust it off and try it again.
Actually I took the easy way out on this one and took the CD drive out all together.

As always everyone a satifactory result, thanks to the combined help from all at CH.
Many thanks, my mum will be pleased.
I loaded some simple games on the computer and office and at 75 years old Im sure thats more than enough for her to comprehend and absorb for the time being.

Solve : Can't connect to the internet? But I am??

Answer»

Ok FIRST off, this problem is very vast. I realise I have put it in the wrong section. Could a mod move it to the software section or something?

The problem: I can not connect to the internet. It doesn't work. In the bottom right hand corner where it shows that you are connected, it shows that I'm not. Yet if I click "Connect or Disconnect to networks" it shows that I'm connected but with LIMITED access. If I disconnect and try reconnecting it just says that it is taking LONGER than usual and fails - but it then says that it is connected.

Cause: This all started out with Xbox Live. I got my 360 up and running with Live yesterday after a long process of bridging my connection etc. I played for a while, went to bed, and woke up. It had just stopped working. When I test the connection, it looks like this: Xbox - - - - - Network - - - - - Computer - - - - - Internet - - - - - Live
And as it shows that it's testing the connection to the network, it fails. Like I said, this didn't happen yesterday. Now a friend of mine who is a PC wizard came round and fiddled with my connection properties. Now my laptop (which is what my Xbox is connected to through an ethernet cable) which is wireless) will not connect. The thing is, downstairs I have the main computer. It wasn't working for 3 hours before my friend fiddled around with my laptop. Now it is. (I'm using it to write this)

I'm using Vista on my laptop, XP on my computer. My Xbox is connected to my laptop via an ethernet cable (to save the best PART of £50). It started out as the Xbox wouldn't connect, now it's just messed up. My friend has no idea what is wrong and is completely puzzled.

Any help is appreciated greatly!Did you try resetting the modem? Vista seems to have issues with the connections anyway disconnect the modem turn off the power then reconnect and turn the power back on. Somtimes going through connection wizard can also rest the perameters.Yeah I've tried that about 50 times

I've turned everything off. Xbox, Laptop, Computer, Modem. Waited 10 minutes and then turned them on again - no luck. You have a normal network cable going from your xbox to your laptop and then your laptop has a wireless connection to your modem/router.

I am not exactly sure if that should have even worked right the first time.

It sounds like you need to just KEEP it simple and spend the £50 or so and get it hooked up as it should be.Quote from: mroilfield on February 21, 2009, 06:27:36 AM

Yeah. But it did

Now the problem is fixing my internet.

Solve : e-GeForce FX 5200 PCI Video Card Not Working?

Answer»

My e-GeForce FX 5200 128mb PCI DVI video card suddenly stopped working. Over the past few months I noticed that the fan on the video card was spinning eratically. Now it does not spin at all. I can buy an aftermarket video card fan for aprox $10 or a FX-6200 256mb PCI DVI card for aprox $60. Will the aftermarket video card fan resolve the problem or is it probable that the video card is toast? I already switched PCI slots to test the card. My sound card in another PCI slot works fine. Currently, I am using an analog CRT monitor connected to the on-board video port. This is an older motherboard with only PCI slots.does the Video card appear to work fine otherwise? If so then you can likely get a compatible fan and plop it on there.

EDIT: DUH! SAW your first sentence and did a *facepalm*...

Actually, I have a similar model, a BFG GeForce FX 5500, and for about a week I was stumped as to why a few of my games would literally freeze solid for a full minute every 2-3 minutes. I underclocked the card- and it seemed to work fine after that.

Anyway- I was changing my Internet CONNECTION to wired as opposed to wireless to get more speed, and when I opened my PC to replace the NIC, I noticed that the Geforce fan was angled and the hub was FILLED with burn marks.

To my benefit, I had purchased a PCI GeForce FX 6200... but since I wanted to keep my AGP adapter even if it was an older chipset, I opted instead to remove the fan from the 6200 and install it into the 5500...

And it worked great!

The thing is, I don't know how compatible any aftermarket COOLERS are as far as Video cards are concerned- most might require you to remove the heatsink as well, which means thermal paste can get involved, etc. On the other hand, the only surefire solution, buying another graphics card of a similar model and stealing the fan, is kind of silly since you may as well just upgrade your existing one.

EDIT: ignore that. If the PC refuses to boot with that video card or you are having serious ARTIFACTS, it sounds like the GPU might have been damaged. If you can get a replacement fan cheaper then a new card, or the card is under warranty, go for that option.

Failing that... sounds like you might need a new video card.Sounds like a dead card to me. Here's good deal if another FX 5200 would be acceptable: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814145136. Note the card has both DVI and D-Sub/VGA ports.the fx 5200 is a very old card there are alot of other cards out ther that are still reasonable priced that would be several times better the the 5200. if you don't want to spend alot look at the 8600gt or the 9600gt, it would be about twice the price but well worth it.Quote from: chevronman on February 20, 2009, 11:19:03 PM

Solve : Graphics Card Compatible??

Answer»

I am about to purchase parts for my first computer build and wanted to make sure that the GRAPHICS card I want to go with will fir in the case I was going to purchase. The case is a mid tower ATX case (Raidmax Sagitta II). The graphics card I want to go with is a HIS 4870 IceQ 4+. Does anyone know if this card will fit in this particular case? I have looked and around the web and can't find any information on this. Any help? Oh, I believe the card is about 9.25" from what I have read.

ThanksThe video card should fit ok, however you might RUN into problems with how the ran will be configured. It is a big card and you may not be able to utilize tha ram to its fullest potential.

How can we know whether the card will work without knowing what MBoard it's SUPPOSED to be used in ? ?Sorry about that. The MOTHERBOARD is an ASUS M4A78 PRO AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard.

Here is a link to it, too.

Solve : couple question?

Answer»

ok i have a HP Pavilion dv6000. i keep seeing that vistas are power suckers, and are horrible. should i downgrade to xp? if so...
is it even possible to change a laptop to xp?
is there a specific type of xp i should change it to?
and anything else you can add will be appreciated. and i'm wondering this because my computers been loud from the fan, using high cpu usage, and ram....Not necessary........

If you like it, keep it.

I use Vista am I have to say I like it.
Some people won't agree but that's another topic.......XP Home SP3 costs the same as Vista Home Premium.
Instead of downgrading, check out some guides of how to lower vista's usage.
The DV6000 isn't a bad laptop so I'd keep Vista on it if I were you.
It is very possible to change a laptop's OS, insert the boot cd and you should be able to do it from there.
Have you been experiencing slow performance? Vista shouldn't really mean higher temperatures (resulting in louder fans) unless it's using loads of the computers power.
What's your Vista experience rating? If it's above 4 it'll run Vista ok IMHO (this rating system was, however, a real failure to Vista. I've got a rating of 5.9 with a DECENT computer (the highest you can GET))
2GB or more of RAM is very useful- I THINK the DV6000 only has 1GB of 667MHz so I'd recommend turning some features off.
I personally wouldn't downgrade. Vista SP1 is fine and buying XP is a bit of a waste in my opinion.
You can change the Vista scheme to run like 98 or XP which could save some power.

I agree with kpac. I have Vista and I do like it- but I've got 4GB of RAM and a faster processor.
People saying that Vista is awful- even after SP1- should take into account how good it looks and I've had no stability problemsi think it has 3 gb of ram.. idk what the second # u said after it was lol..

Solve : unallocated HD, don't know how to get it working again?

Answer»

I've been working on my computer lately and at one point yesterday I REALIZED Windows wasn't detecting my main 2 HARD DRIVES ( I just completely restored windows so this hasn't going on till just now). So I installed Ext2 so that my computer may be able to detect them, which it did. Linux was on both of them, and so I decided to reformat and I started on one. After that was finished the other one wasn't detected by Ext2 anymore, and windows displayed the hd with a question mark.Windows recognized there was SOMETHING there, but it didn't know anything about it and I couldn't do anything with it. I'm running on a disc VERSION of Ubuntu right now and it says the disc is unallocated yet it knows how large the disc is. I still can't do anything with it though, got any suggestions on how I can make it usable for windows again?
