Yes, you can use their software to do that.Emailed Emachine help and support and got this back
CPU Socket/Slot Type: mPGA 478 and it should not be over 2.0 Ghz.
I am a newbie to this and dont know what that means. My question was could I put a Pentium 4 into my emachine that has a celeron processor could anyone tell me if I can or not a simple yes or no will do.Quote from: rockstar4cs on July 29, 2008, 10:33:47 PM

Based on their answer - Yes - but not over 2.0 GHZ in speed. You NEED a P4 for a 478 socket.

What happened to the hard drive? You may have to go the ebay.com route for a processor. I see all the 478 socket processors sold by newegg.com are 2.5GHz or higher. I gave my friend a few months ago a dell optiplex GX260 he needed a quick fix and I gave it to him cheap. The hardrive recently started acting up on it and I think it has the pentium 4 I need so I'll mostlikly end up getting it off him. If I was to get the chip off him look up a toturial and put in the new processor. Where would I get a flash for my bios so it could handle that? Don't know that you would need to flash the BIOS but, if you do, the latest BIOS will be at Dell. Be SURE to get the right update for your computer.I wish people would not write "hardrive" when they mean "hard drive".

Solve : What Am I Doing Wrong? New radeon HD 2400 pro card?

Answer»

HELP!! (please)

I have a Gateway Media Center PC which is really the xp pro.

I wanted to upgrade my video card and went online to Gateway and one of the techs looked over my specs and told me to get the Visiontek/radeon HD 2400 pro card.

It has been Three weeks now and .. Nothing that I have been instructed to do has made the card work?

First, I went to Device manager and disabled the video adapter, as instructed, shut down the pc and pulled out the old card.
I put the new card into the old cards slot, (which according to Gateway is the only PCI Express slot) and from that moment on, Nothing!

When the pc booted up, I had the software disc in my dvd drive, as instructed and the on screen program would say .. "downloading the software."

Hours later, Nothing seemed to be happening and when I clicked the little X box to get out of the screen, the "program is not responding" would come up"!

I can't find anything in bios to disable and I don't even know enough to know if I have one of those onboard video controllers that everyone talks about?

I thought that they meant an onboard video card? How could I have anything, Onboard if I was able to pull it out?

One other thing is that SOMEONE told me that I had to be at net 2.0 framework?
What is that? I see where I have something like that which is at 1.0.

This is all Very CONFUSING and Most frustrating!

I am apparently running on some kind of Basic video driver right now that xp installs when it wont recognize my video card and .. It is Terrible!

Please, can someone give me a Clue as to why something that is supposed to be simple to do .. Is driving me Crazy?

Thank You
MC

P.S. According to Gateway, the pci express card will work in the old cards slot because it is the only pci express slot?

The old card was/is an NIVIDIA GEForce 6200, what ever that meansCan't find an answer anywhere.
Not from Gateway, Visiontek or hundreds of Google searches.
I Can't be the only one who this has been a problem for?

McYour problem is not complicated; just annoying. That is why you should have let a professional handle it.

Now, first off.. the choice of buying an HD2400 Pro was very poor. You should have come here before and asked us.

To solve your issue, download the drivers from this site - http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp

And since you plugged your monitor into the output on the newly installed card, that means your onboard graphics chip is either already disabled, or non-existant. To find out for sure, the model number of your computer is needed, but unnecessary.Track

THANK YOU for actually responding to my post.
If you can help and if the model number is important, it is a GM5045E Gateway, MCE.

I didn't just run out and BUY this card, I asked a Gateway tech, (online) which adapter I could upgrade to.
This is what he told me to get.
I have the CD driver software for it but it always says "software failed to load" and/or .. program not responding.
Something about net 2.0 needed?

Well, the tech was misleading for some reason. If you're upgrading your graphics card then you obviously want to play video games. In which case, the 2400 Pro is the poorest choice on the market. How could that person even tell you with graphics card to buy when he doesn't know what you're looking to do with it? And he even told you to buy a graphics card that is about as powerful as your last one. I think Gateway should seriously review their hiring policies.

The truth is you can buy any PCI-e x16 graphis card and it will run just fine. The only problem is your power supply, which could be why he told you that your upgrading path is limited, but that is easily REPLACEABLE as well. If you are not interested in gaming, then return to your old graphics card, or download the drivers I set out for you.

Solve : Hoping for Video Card help?

Answer»

Hullo to all, I would be grateful for any help here!
I have an ABIT IC7 max3 mobo with an agp graphics slot, 3GB ram, a 650w psu, PENTIUM dual core 3.2gh cpu running windows xp pro sp3, loads of HD space and i am trying to get a Radeon 3850 graphics card to work. trouble is I can't get the system to recognise the card (keeps saying not correct drivers, but i loaded them from the install disk).
If I PERSEVERE I get notified that the puter doesn't recognise the hardware.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong? Does it make any difference that the AGP aperture in the BIOS cannot be set higher than 256? (Clutching at straws here )

tia Try going to ATI web site & download the correct driver from there Dis able your old card in device managerThanks for the reply, but, as I was instructed to do in the bumf, I uninstalled all ATI drivers etc before installing the card, then re-installed from the CD provided AND used the 'update' function to search for any new drivers. Still no joy. What OS are you running?Have you gone into bios and set your settings to default or best known config?Running XP sp3, all updates. No, haven't tried setting it to best known settings. I'll give it a try....
It's a pain, cos I have to keep taking the bloody thing out & putting my old one back each time I try SOMETHING Try installing the driver with any virus and spy ware you have disabledWhen you have the new card installed in its slot and you turn on the system do you get a display at your monitor. If not i think you have a bad cardNo, I get a display but it won't go above the lowest settings/resolution. Tried loading drivers in safe mode as well with the AV turned off. i would call ati support and explain your PBLM. check backQuote from: xavier on July 29, 2008, 09:43:26 AM

i would call ati support and explain your PBLM. check back

Thanks.. OK, did this and (in the end) Iwas directed to a hotfix, which I have installed. Now, when I go into Device Manager, it knows the card is there but says 'insufficient resources' but I don't know what to change... I looked in 'resources by type' view, and nothing has EXACTLY the same address as the card.

Solve : Computer doesn't recognize CD/DVD reader/writer?

Answer»

I tried to save photo files to a CD several days ago on my HP computer using XP. The computer didn't recognize either of my two CD reader/writers. When I highlighted a photo file to save I was not given the option of "saving to a CD" as is normally the case. I PUT a blank CD in the drive and didn't get the window asking what I wanted to do. Basically the computer no longer recognizes the existence of the CD writer. If I put a software DISC into the CD driver, nothing happens then either. I replaced the CD/DVD writer with a new one and still nothing. There was no change. When I tried to BURN a music CD, I got a window saying I needed to plug in a CD writer. What's wrong, have any ideas?1) Be sure they are properly connected inside the case - power and data cables.

2) Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware Tab>Device Manager, look for CD/DVD Drive; are yours properly identified? Any yellow exclamation points?

EDIT: 1B) Check to see if they are properly designated in the BIOS.Yes there are yellow exclamation marks. What does that mean?It means there are missing Drivers.

Go to to the Drive manufacturer's website and download the appropriate drivers.Okay, thanks to both of you for the information. That'll give me something to try tomorrow. Right now I'm needing a break from this stuff. JamesQuote from: roaddawg on July 07, 2008, 09:13:45 PM

Yes there are yellow exclamation marks. What does that mean?

Follow the same path that led you to the yellow marks.

Left-click the 'plus' sign by CD-ROM.

Right-click on each of the drives in turn and 'uninstall.'

Re-boot the computer - Windows should 'find' the CD devices and load the drivers automatically.

Post back and LET us know how you made out.Drmsucks

I went through the process you suggested and when I rebooted, I got a notice that the computer had "found" new the hardware, but apparently it didn't automatically download the drivers because the new writer still doesn't work. It won't, for example, recognize a CD of photos or a software CD I put in it for a test. What's next?Quote
Go to to the Drive manufacturer's website and download the appropriate drivers.
Windows 2000, and up doesn't need any extra drivers for optical drives.

Try one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or PRIMARY Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Option 1 worked like a champ. Thank you very much. Thanks to everyone that took the time to help solve this problem. Thank you...thank you....thank you.Cool I might have spoken too soon. Now if I put say a CD with photos on it in the new drive, I have all the normal options (to copy content to a file etc), so that part works well. If I put an empty disc in, I don't get the normal "what do you want to do" as if it doesn't recognize an empty disc. More importantly, when I go to copy something to a CD in that drive, I now get an error that says, "D:\ is not accessible"..."incorrect function." Humm...still can't write files to the CD. Quote
I don't get the normal "what do you want to do" as if it doesn't recognize an empty disc.
Download, and run fix.bat: Click here
Restart computer.I downloaded it, but nothing changed. Any other ideas? Is it a an absurd idea to re-install my XP OS software?Did you run it?

Solve : PC won't boot, video card??

Answer»

While everyone else is having issues with computers starting, I might as well ask why mine isn't either.

When I TURN it on, the motherboard powers up, fans whirr, hard drive clicks, cd-rom spins and then it repeats.
Sounds like it keeps trying to boot and not making it to the first STEP.
I thought the video card just wasn't securely in the slot but it's in as far as it can go and there's no sign of life on screen.
I haven't made any changes to the wiring or hardware in months.

Can a power supply have enough juice to start things up but not boot?

How LONG do video cards last?
Could summer heat be to blame?

Thanks

Specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-8I945P
CPU Intel P4 1.6GHz
2GB RAM
Video Card: Radeon x550 256MB PCI-Express (4 years old)
PSU: Turbolink Switching Powerlink LC-A420 ATX 12V

Yes it could be the psu, but lets try some other things first, is this a new build?

Did you try reseating the ram?I built this machine a year ago, worked fine except once or twice, when turning it on I'd have the jostle it around or reseat the video card to get it to boot.

I tried reseating the ram, nothing going.

Subtle hint:
If I don't have the monitor cable PLUGGED into the card, machine reboots several times in quick succession and then once every half second or so.
If I do have the cable plugged in, the first quick succession does not occur, only the longer half second reboots.
Do you have onboard graphics card you could try?

Does it boot in safe mode?Borrow a known good PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there...sorry, had to make a tough decision about finding a power supply...
anyway, a comparable working PSU does not allow me to boot

even with the harddrive and CDROM unplugged,
shouldnt I be able to see the BIOS start up if my video card worked?
all I get is black

is there any other explanation besides a bad video card?

What do you mean by this? If you mean boot from your desktop hdd, which you will have to connect to your laptop as an external usb mass storage device, the answer is probably no even if your laptop is capable of booting from a usb device. By hooking up the desktop hdd to your laptop you could recover critical files before attempting to repair your registry which will LIKELY involve the loss of some data files.

Solve : Sound skipping when computer is busy.?

Answer»

Windows XP SP 2
Intel Pentium 4 processor
1 GB of ram
Diamond Radeon X1550 PCIE
Sound Card built into motherboard.

Motherboard:
Product Name: D975XBX2
Version: AAD53350-507
S.N.: BQB271900140
Intel Desktop Board D975XBX2
Intel 975X Express Chipset

It just started one day when my brother got on. I've looked in other places, and they may have the same problem (I think), but they have separate sound cards.
It may be be hardware related, but I doubt it. I think (please NOTE the THINK part) it has something to do with this hardware interrupts thingy. I have Process Explorer by sysinternals, and whenever my computer is busy the hardware interrupts part reaches around 45% of my CPU on average (I don't know if that's normal or not). Please note; that's just what I think.

When I try to play a sound it will play but in the middle of it, my mouse will freeze for a very little amount of time; when the skips happen.

It started happening when our internet was out, so I doubt it was from a PROGRAM or anything.

I've even tried getting a separate sound card, and that didn't work.
That sound card was an old Creative Labs one.

I've been trying to fix it for a week and can't. If you need anymore INFORMATION please tell me.

I did update my drivers, I did scan for viruses, I did install updates. Still having the problem.Worth a try doing a system restore and see if you have same pblmTried and it said it could not restore to this restore point. Did it with a different one, same thing. So I gave up. I saw my antivirus delete some of those restore points though. I use avast!.

I also forgot to mention if the computer is not busy, it can play sounds almost perfectly.Avast doesn't delete restore points.

Did you try to reinstall sound driver?

That's not enough. You have to download the newest audio driver, uninstall current one, and install fresh one.

If you don't know, where to find it, post your computer brand, and model.Hey, I just uninstalled my current drivers and tried to find drivers for my board. I think I messed up, because when my computer REBOOTED, I got a blue screen right off the bat. So maybe you can choose for me, because apparently I can't.

This is my motherboard model:
http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d975xbx2/

I went to latest drivers and chose choice number 3. That wasn't right >.>I don't know what you mean by number 3. I don't see any number 3.
I believe, you should get Intel High Definition Audio.Screw it. I tried to install some drivers, now I get a bluescreen at startup and I can't find what's causing it. I'm just going to convince my brother to let me reformat. There is something wrong there.
It's very unlikely to get BSOD by installing sound drivers. I surely don't know, WHAT you did install.
Try repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmlol Get this: I go to do that repair thingy, and I find out I have unpartitioned space on my harddrive. So I installed a new version of XP without having to reformat!! Problem solved Thanks!Pretty clever

Solve : XFX 9800 GTX cooling question??

Answer»

Hi all,

So, my XFX 9800 GTX idles at about 64 C. it doesn't seem to go much HIGHER under load (like 68).... To me, this seems REALLY hot, ESPECIALLY because everything else in my case almost always stays under 40 C. my case is well ventilated. I have not overclocked at all and am running Windows XP SP2.

The stock clocks from when I bought it are... core => 740MHz
mem => 2280MHz

I just note these because they seem higher than others with the same card... maybe it was the edition that I bought or something.... but again... I didn't mess with them.

Some solutions for these temps (assuming they're not normal) that I've heard range from manually messing with fan controls using rivatuner etc... and removing stock cooler and adding some arctic silver 5.

So, just to clarify what my question is... Are these temps high(compared to other card owners)? if so, is it dangerous to the card? What are good ways to control fan speeds (don't really care for rivatuner since I'm not gonna mess with clocks, just the fan, so I want something simpler)? and does anyone agree with the arctic silver solution. also, I wouldn't be opposed to after market cooling if anyone knows of any for this card68C under load is nothing to worry about, graphics cards tend to run up to 80C or so.
You probably bought a factory overclocked card.
Rivatuner is a good solution actually, I sue it myself to automatically adjust the fan speed when the card heats up. Without it my 8800GT loads at around 75C, with it I never go above 65 or so.
If you're absolutely sure of your temps then they're nothing to worry about, those are in fact good.
Hope this helps. Thanks, I guess I was just being paranoid. I read on another forum somewhere that temps that hot were bad for the card, I didn't think the guy really knew what he was talking about, but it got me thinking....

I will give rivatuner another go....

I appreciate the help

good dayThere are some great guides out there to getting Rivatuner to set different fan speeds based on the temperature.
With very little EFFORT, I have it set to load a mild OC and 50% fan on startup, then 75% fan if it reaches 60C, and 100% fan if it reaches 70C. When the temps get lower, the fan speeds also get lower, and I'm considering graduating the speeds a little more. Then when I exit Rivatuner, back down to 50% fan and stock clocks.
Great program, very easy to use, and very handy.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on.I'm going to have to give Rivatuner a ride on the new build....THANX for the heads up Calum !

Solve : q6600 vs e8400?

Answer»

what one would be better? i will have like a game wmp a internet browser and a antivirus scan running all at once i may render some things MABYE photoshop things mabye file conversion things dvd ripping cd ripping multimedia type things not that MUCH of that though so do you think a e8400 will be reallygood for that? or will a Q6600 be better?anyone? this is such a hard desicion!!!! i dont know the dual will do better in games and stuff and can go higher then the q6600 but i dont know!i guess ill get the q6600Get the quad definitely, trust me on this.
I had to take the decision between dual and quad, and I really wish I had spent the extra few pounds for a quad CORE.but im debating about the q6600 or the q9300 now the q9300 has less overclocking (not that i need to oc it that high) like 3 or 3.2ish range but the q9300 aslo has sse4 and 45nm and is nore power effecient the q6600 doesnt have that so i dont know its like $80 more i think Actually I'm seeing the Q9300 clocking very well indeed . . . you didn't mention overclocking so I didn't take it into account.
The E8400 by the way can surpass 4GHz easily enough.but i dont think im considering that one any more just the q6600 or q9300 do think its worth the extra $80 US for the q9300??no get the 6600Well, I'd say get the Q9300 . . . it'll run cooler for one thing, and also a fair bit faster EVEN though the clock speed is only slightly faster than the Q6600. My opinion is that if you're on a tight budget you won't regret not getting it, but if you have the CASH why not spend a little extra.Quote from: Calum on July 31, 2008, 02:18:13 PM

You're not one to dissapoint me, Calum.

Overclocking is crucial, thus the Q9300 fails. The Q6600, Q6700 and Q9450 if you have an X38 or better board are the current correct choices.i dont think i have any more money for anything other then the q6600 With a Quad -Core why is overclocking crucial ? ?

Solve : Syncing problem with external hard drive device?

Answer»

Hi,

About 4 months AGO, I bought a Maxtor external HDD to back up all my data onto. I just built another computer with mostly new parts (except the HD). Before building the new system, I tried to back up all my old data to the external drive to transfer to my new computer, but the drive was having issues being recognized, so I brought it back to best buy where it was purchased and exchanged it for a new one (for free), and the drive also comes with a 5 year warranty(though it doesn't cover data loss, it's supposed to cover faulty drives). The new drive had no problems backing up all my data, and I proceeded to wipe the old drive...However, upon booting up with the OS and getting all the drivers in order, I encountered this problem(this is a copy of an email I sent to thier tech support):

"Hello, I've been using your 120 GB OneTouch 4 Mini to back up all my important files. I've upgrading my computer with all new core hardware EXCEPT for the hard drive, which I've wiped clean, reformated, and reinstalled windows xp home SP2. My question is, will I be able to retrieve all the data on my OneTouch and save it back to the original hard drive now that I wiped/reinstalled, and if so, how do I do this? The manual that came with your product did not describe how to do this, if at all possible. If this is not possible, is there any other way of retrieving that data off of the OneTouch and saving it to some other medium? Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!"

I sort of downplayed the fact that I encountered this problem AFTER I had already wiped the old drive...and although the externall HD PROGRAM installed successfully on the new computer, it would not allow me to transfer files from my external drive to the new one(in other words, it won't allow me to "sync" any files. Seagate CUSTOMER service told me that,

"Having assessed the issue, I have established that it will need an in lab effort to recover all the information as the drive seems to have some hardware failure. You will be shipping the drive to a Seagate facility near to you in order for us to do the free evaluation. Once we have established the amount of data we can recover, a case manager will get in touch with further details. The cost can range between $700-$2200 provided the UNIT is a single drive. The cost is applicable only upon a successful recovery. There will be no fees to evaluate the drive and assess the amount of data we can recover. "

This is pretty shady, and I know this is an issue I'll likely need to resolve with the manufacturer on my own, but my question is that does anyone know of a way I can attempt to recover the drive data myself? I'm sorry if this is an "illegal" question for this FORUM, so if it is please let me know and i'll delete this post myself, as my intent is not to exploit this forum for that purpose. Just trying not to get royally ripped off by this company...on a last note, the manual that came with the drive has virtually no instructions other then how to install and warranty info, so it's a no go there. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Maxtor 160 gb SATA HDD(internal)
maxtor onetouch mini 4 120Gb external HDD(USB 2.0 interface)
Rosewill 600W Performance series PSU
CD/DVD burner/player, Floppy DriveHappy to report that I just figured out my own problem. Turns out you can in fact "sync" the files between the one touch 4 mini and your current harddrive, you just can't do it through the maxtor software. You don't need any third party software though, all I did was go to "My computer", double clicked on the detected external drive, then i double clicked the file "maxtor backup", and all my old files were right there under my old PC's name....all I had to do was drag and drop the files onto my internal harddrive, wait a few minutes while they transferred, and then I had all my files back. I'm going to assume since the external drive sorts backed up data by each PC's unique name(in other words, it creates a unique file for each unique HD that you've backed up data from) that you can easily manage several different HDs and successfully sync data to any harddrive you want. I'll mention this last little bit to clarify that you don't in fact need to save all your files under "My documents" for you to be able to recover the files...in my case, I had 3 different partitions (C (the windows partition), E, and F), and I had only backed up files from E and F from the old harddrive before I wiped it...I found them and restored them no problem using the technique described above. Piece of cakeGlad we could help......

Now, I play World of Warcraft, and when I first had everything installed, with all the graphic settings at max and in the middle of heavy action, I had a solid 60 Frames Per Second. I'd be in an area with about 25 people and lots of fighting, with maximum graphics, and I'd not see a drop in my frame rate.

After playing for a while, WoW would freeze up. The first time this happened, I had to reboot my computer. It ALSO happened a second time, and that time it just kicked me out of WoW. I figured it was because of heating issues, so I took the side of my case off (it doesn't really have very good ventilation, and only two fans) and I now have a gigantic fan blowing into the side of my case. When I have my big fan going, I don't have freeze-ups or get kicked out, but lately I have been noticing a decrease in frame rates, and I'm not sure if it's heat-related? I'm in an area with maybe 14 people, and no action, and I'm getting about 35 FPS. So basically I'm wondering if this is caused by heat issues and if anyone thinks a new case would help, or if there is anything else I can do? Please let me know. Thanks.

Sounds like it's heat related. Try getting an after-market GPU block maybe? Just checking, you didn't install any bloatware in the mean time, right? That has enormous impact. No, I can't think of any applications that might suck up my RAM or anything. I'm using about a fourth of my RAM when in WoW, and maybe 2% of my CPU. I always try to keep my applications at a minimum out of old habit from dealing with an older, laggier computer. I guess I'll see if the GPU block does anything for me, then. Are you running SLI ? ?
Is it configured properly ? ?No, I just have one video card in so far, and everything else is configured properly.

Thirdly, run CPU Burn-in (processor STRESS test): http://users.bigpond.net.au/cpuburn/, and post results.

What is not working/causing problems, right now?hi look now my pc is freezing with anything .... what going on ....MAN i scare now..... and every time i restart it it take longer load You might have damage your processor already.

Solve : Looking for some help!?

Answer»

Having a couple different issues with my comp, that may or may not be related, that end up boiling down to one point. I'll start from the top.

I have an HP a520n with an AMD Athlon 3200+, 1.5gigs DDR pc2700 ram, an onboard gforce4 mx 400 card(not used), an aftermarket ATI 9800 card and the motherboard is a A7N8X-LA from ASUS. It's running windows XP home edition.

I'd been using this machine since I'd bought it with this setup, running my monitor through the ATI card. About 3 months ago my monitor would start powering off during games, once a day or so. Reformated, and that solved that issue. Recently ran into the same issue, except not the same extent. It would power off, then flicker back on 10-15 seconds later with a popup from my ATI controller warning me VPU recovery failed. That would happen anywhere from once every 10mins to every couple hours. This was only the initial problem.

I decided it was time for a new video card, I wanted to upgrade for Diablo 3 anyways. I bought an nVidia Geforce4 7600 AGP8x, brought it home, and installed it like normal, bridging it's PSU source off the line to one of my cd drives. The comp booted up fine, except the monitor never powered on. Tried to boot the comp with the monitor hooked up to the original onboard mx400, with the 7600 still in there, and the monitor didn't want to turn on still. I even removed the 7600 from the powersupply loop and couldn't get the monitor to come on with the mx 400. I realized then, my powersupply is only 250watt and the card requires 300watt.

My roommate had an extra 415watt that was known to be good, I put that in, running the monitor through the 7600.. and same result. So I tried, what I tried with the 300watt powersupply, on the 410watt. Still nothing. I removed the 7600 card completely, put in my old ATI card again(which still has the drivers on the comp), running the monitor through that. Comp booted fine, started up a game, and about a minute into it the game crashes. Reboot, same result.

I figure it has something to do with the powersupply, so I put back in my old powersupply, with my PREVIOUSLY working ATI card still in there(minus a couple vpu recovery failures) and when I boot I can only get it to my desktop and the comp freezes then auto reboots. I start it up again and this time it only makes it to the windows loading screen. Subsequent restarts are even worse, the fans start spinning, HD is spinning, my first cdrom drive is responsive, the other is not(simply makes a sound, like it attempted to open, but does not.), and will just black screen after the blue/white HP screen. After about a full minute of black screen the fans and HD will power down and stop spinning. Blue light on my power button in front is still on, I have to hold it for 6seconds to power it off. Powering on again causes the same result. If I let the comp sit for a couple hours, and go back and try again, I can get to my load screen or even desktop again before a freeze/reboot and the entire same loop of events again.

I thought because I had switched out powersupplies that I had hooked mine up incorrectly, forgetting to attach a secondary 4pin to the motherboard. I dl'd the usermanual for my motherboard and there is infact only one 20pin connector to the motherboard, not a 20pin and a 4pin. I have cddrives 1 and 2 on one rail then my HD+ floppy on the other rail. I had tried to hook up my 7600 card off the end of the second rail, before all this other mess started.

I'm also now having the same problem as this guy now:
http://forums.techarena.in/xp-hardware/1010231.htm
Basicly a slow moving HD not responding fast enough to bios, I'm assuming my HD isn't responding fast enough because of some sort of powersupply limitation. I'm about ready to just walk out and buy a new powersupply, and hope that fixes it o_o

Thanks for your time and efforts, any insight would be appreciated.I would think you have corrupted files on HD have or a failing HDI've had no indications of my HD failing before though. Could the SWITCH in PSU, for any logical reason, CAUSE these symptoms?and would a failing HD cause the other symptoms I was seeing(before i couldn't get it to boot)? Failed VPU recovery, monitor not turning on with the new 7600 card installed, etc?To find out if in fact it is the drive DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. website ( Free )...

How exactly would I go about running the diagnostic on my HD when I can't even boot the comp? I'm posting from my brothers comp. I could dl here, but that wouldn't do me much good. About the PSU, I have two PSU's I'm trying. One is the comp's original, 300w, and the other is a 410w. Both get the same result now, even with 100% stock parts, nothing that would require an extreme amount of power. The diagnostics once DLoaded are designed to create a bootable CD/DVD....it runs outside of Windows so no OS is needed.

I'd still borrow another PSU as they may have issues. Those are both older units. Just because there are 2 of them doesn't rule them out.
On a new build in November i had 3 brand new bad units in a row...it wasn't until i had RMA'd the MBoard that i discovered that.Quote from: patio on July 30, 2008, 01:33:19 PM

Sorry, lol. Didn't know thats how it worked. I tried looking up my HD manuf., but when I search the system specs at HP all I'm told is it's a 160gb Ultra DMA 7200RPM drive, as seen here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00067795&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

There's no XP version listed, I'm pretty confused ==.I've just tried it with a third PSU, it's doing the same as the other two. Now all I can get is the fans on and spinning, sounds like the cdrom is spinning, blue light on the button in front turns on but thats it. No other clicks or sounds, and the monitor stays off. So I'm not even getting back to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." blank screen, muchless the HP screen, loadscreen or desktop followed by a freeze as I was before.Dis connect everything only leaving 1 stick of ram, cpu with heatsink, video card hooked up to monitor. Solve : Keyboard, Mouse, Printer and monitor all not working?

Answer»

OMG please help me This morning I came out to my computer and my monitor was in energy saver mode ( Normal) so i went to roll the mouse and my monitor did not show a screen. I then noticed that i had no keyboard or mouse lights on or my printer.

I shut down replugged all in and still nothing, I also borrowed a friends, monitor, mouse and keyboard, and they don't work either. People have been giving me different ideas yet none are working. One was to try and put the windows CD in and go from there, well.. I cant see my screen and my keyboard is not working so i am very frustrated. If anyone has any ideas i would really appreciate it!!TELL us more about your computer. Make and model, how old, any hardware changes lately? Any symptoms lately of abnormal behavior? Any lights at all showing on front or back of the computer when you try to turn it on? Any SOUNDS, beeps, or sound of fans or hard drive running?

Do you normally leave it on all night? Do you have it connected to a surge protector? Any electrical storms or power interruptions lately that you know of?

Have you tried plugging into a different outlet? Is anything else currently plugged into the same outlet as the computer or surge protector to which the computer is connected? If not, try plugging something else into that outlet and verify that it works.Well this computer was a build not a store bought one.. I have had it about 6 years... Nothing abnormal has HAPPENED prior to this, all my fans work everything else works, it is plugged into a surge protector and everything else on that surge protector is working. No storms or anything unusual at all.

I do normally leave it on all night yes, and no unusual beeps, it sounds as if it is booting up with no problems.

When i turn it on the normal green light appears on the tower and my monitor light stays red instead of green.

There have been no hardware changes at all or any changes for that matter. So, you see absolutely nothing on screen from the moment you press the power button to turn it on, right?

When you say "everything else works", what do you mean? Will your CD/DVD drive tray open? What all "works"?

Have you ever replaced the power supply in your computer since it was built?Correct I see aboslutely nothing....

And I mean everything else works as in Speakers, the cd drive and dvd drive, everything but the aforementioned. I have NEVER replaced the power supply actually i have never had to REPLACE anything on it.

When it was first built i remember a battery had to be replaced ( it was the size of a quarter)What OS are you running? When your computer starts up, do you need to login to a user account before using your computer? If not, i.e. no login needed, can you put a music CD in your computer and see whether it starts playing (assuming that's what would normally happen)? If not, then how do you know your speakers are working when you turn on your computer? I got the same problem as him/her, although i don't know whether my speaker is working. It's a window xp, i have been using this comp for 3 years. It was fine until this morning. The monitor, mouse and keyboard lights are not on, but my pc is still running. the fans and everything are running.Quote from: catiazz on August 02, 2008, 09:04:25 PM

Solve : Monitor problem-too stretched out!?

Answer»

(Backround:I have an hp pavilion dv9000. I was trying to fix my monitor's display b/c it was too stretched out..I opened control panel, personalize, display settings, and played around with the 1 and 2 monitor thing and I think that screwed my monitor up somehow.)

Main Question: The monitor display on my screen is stretched past the edges of my monitor, in both directions. I can't see the icons on the left side of my screen. Because of this, I can't change the display settings because when I click on the display TAB to maximize it, it MAXIMIZES off to the right side of my screen, past the edges of my monitor. I know it does that because when I minimize it USING the tab it flies over from the right side. So now I can't use internet, microsoft word, etc, because the TABS fly over to the right side of my screen past the edge. Is there any way I can fix this by pressing buttons on my keyboard or something? Or do you think theres another reason why the tabs are icons arent showing up, like MAYBE I clicked "hide tabs" by accident or something? Or is this a problem I have to call HP about?Did you try to change screen resolution?

Solve : Backlight help?

Answer»

I replaced a backlight and it worked good. 3 days later it went out again. So I'm trying to fix it again. The SOLDER joints still looked good. I re-soldered each and it still won't come on. It appears the bulb has BURNED out again. Could something be causing it to burn out?

This backlight went out about 4 years ago and it was replaced under warranty.

I'm thinking it might be the inverter. Could that be burning out the bulb? Can I check the voltage of the inverter with a multimeter? Is there any way to find out if this is the PROBLEM?

I know I'm going to have to replace the backlight again, but should I ALSO replace the inverter? I don't want to burn out another one.

This is a Sony Vaio PCG-GRT170I still need help. Anyone? Not an expert here but it could in fact be the inverter.

Is the laptop not under warranty ANYMORE?

Solve : One speaker problem.?

Answer»

My right speaker has this static sort of noise that comes out of it WHENEVER I listen to music or play any other types of audio. I purchased some new speakers today and the right one still has that same problem. It'll distort the sound coming from the right so I have to keep my sound controls all on the left speaker til I can get this fixed.

I've tried moving the cords around and unplugging and re-plugging the speakers in but it does no good.

Does anyone know why this may occur or how to fix it?

I'd try another pair of speakers to eliminate some possibilities.

Well you see, I had this problem before with my old speakers and I thought "Well, maybe they're just dying" so I bought these new speakers today and I have the same exact problem with the right one so it is a bit odd.In that case, I'd suspect speakers' jack on the back of your computer. They do go bad.
You may consider real sound card. If you don't need ANYTHING FANCY, they're cheap.

Solve : 4870x2?

Answer»

should i wait for this to come out before i go AHEAD and buy a single 4870 and crossfire it later? according to benchmarks they look almost the same but they are early drivers for the 4870x2 i dont know! the 4870x2 may be a bit too much for me do you think there will be price drops on the 4870 when the x2 comes out???If you buy the 4870X2 you will be able to add a second one later on. If you buy the regular 4870 now, the maximum you will ever have is a 4870 x2, unless you have three PCI-e X16 slots, but then the PERFORMANCE of a 4870 x3 setup is not much better than that of a 4870 x2, because of driver support.

I say either get two 4850's now, or a single 4870X2 if you want to have Quad-Crossfire, as in 4870X2.. x2.

Just remember that with a Radeon card, you will not be able to play Crysis nearly as well as on any of the scalar-based Geforce cards. That is their only weakness.Wow a lot has changed since I left... Track's back!
Anyways...
About the price drop, absolutely. It would help if I knew how much graphics matter to you... I still have my 7600GS, and I've NEVER used it to it's full potential. And then the 4870 makes an 8800GTX look LIKE whole lot of nothing... Anyways...

Umm, I know this isn't my thread, but what the heck is this whole Scalar-based stuff? I know that the S in SLI means scalar, (scalable link interface), but what does that have to do with performance?

Solve : My computer fails to boot?

Hi everyone. Hope you can help me. Thanks drmsucks for suggesting I START a new thread for this.

First, my setup (New):
SAPPHIRE motherboard
Phoenix AwardBIOS v.6.00PG
AMD Athlon64 3000+
1GB RAM
250GB HDD (about 10% used)
Running WindowsXP SP2

The problem:

On startup, begins normally, then produces an error screen:

'We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change may have caused this.' Etc. I've occasionally seen this screen before. It carries on describing options, and the list that offers Safe Mode.

After the countdown, the computer gets to the Windows XP flag, gets so far, and then the monitor (INTEX LCD) goes back to the 'No signal' message and the computer tries to startup again. It always gets to the XP flag, and then starts over. It never gets to the Welcome screen or DESKTOP.

Moreover when i tried to install XP-OS again it SHOWS a message "aproblem has been detected & windows has been shut down etc. It shows technical information

Solve : Computer auto shuts down right at startup?

Answer»

This computer worked fine for about 4 months then out of nowhere will shut down right after I select my profile (No time to check anything in windows so please don't suggest I try to virus check or anything becasue I can't get that far). I'm fairly CERTAIN its a heat problem but I'm sure what I can do?

This computer I'm sure was really clean. No random internet downloads of videos or music only microsoft office and a few games. Ran great. No overclocking either.

I'm running Windows Vista, Intel core 2 quad 2.4, GeForce 8800 GTS, 2 GB RAM. Any suggestions? Can you try getting onto the computer in Safe Mode?

To discount an overheating problem, try opening the case and getting an external fan and blow at the computer.
I should have mentioned this before. Even in safe mode it shuts down. Sometimes it won't even make it to desktop. At the windows load screen it'll kick off sometimes.

Does that definetely mean that its an overheating problem? All my fans are working, Power Supply is new. I have 1 120 on the back of the case and 2 on the side. Plus the fans on my CPU and Video Card are both working.

That liquid cooling stuff work well? Can you try my suggestion?

It MIGHT not be an overheating problem. It could be a problem with the RAM, PSU, ect....

Anyone else have any ideas?Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 31, 2008, 01:22:01 AM

Can you try my suggestion?

I agree with you. I once had the same problem. I opened the case and checked the RAM, I found that the label on one of the RAM cards has melted and turned into black. I removed the broken one and KEPT the other and restarted the computer. It worked just fine. Try checking the RAM.Remove and re-seat RAM, align the module carefully with the slot, make sure that the white clips 'snap' into place - unplug computer from wall, ground yourself prior to touching any of the PARTS inside the case. If no boot, try to boot with just one memory module at a time. Check your mb manual to see if the module needs to be in a certain slot.

Also, run memtest86. You'll need to download and burn the .iso file to a CD or get the floppy version. Boot from the CD (or floppy) with the 'bad' computer. Run the test on each module at least 2 hours. If successful with each module, test both together for at least 4 hours.
http://memtest.org/

EDIT: btw, the max temp for your processor seems to be 62C or 71C depending on which specific processor it is.I'll try running the test this weekend...

I checked everywhere for melted caps melted parts and found nothing melted. Only problem is I can't keep that computer on for very long to do anything. I got selected for safe mode and on the windows load screen it shut down before loading desktop.I downloaded that test to a cd but right when I started the computer and chose to run from disk my comp shut down.

ouch...How about a few more details - is this a home built computer? Motherboard, mfg and model? PSU - mfg and model and wattage? If not homebuilt, mfg and model? Prior to this problem, did you make any changes - update drivers, install programs, add hardware, etc?

Did you remove and re-seat the RAM and video card, as suggested above?

Remove all peripherals except keyboard, mouse and monitor. Boot?

If the mb has onboard video, remove the video card, plug the monitor into the onboard output. Boot?

Who put the HEATSINK onto the processor? Remove and re-seat cpu. Remove and re-install cpu heatsink.

As always, when troubleshooting, do one thing at a time.

If you don't know how to do anything above, refer to your manuals or post back for instructions.

Before going inside the case, unplug the computer and ground yourself.

Solve : screen all white?

Answer»

i got an OLD computer from my work , it was used to run a computerized saw so it was a computer and touch screen in one unit , when i got it home the first time i turned it on it all work well except for the touch screen didnt work , but the next time i turned it on the screen was all white. since it is all one unit the screen is pluged into the video card by what looks similar to a ribin cable , as that connection is inside the case the vga plug is free , if i plug a moniter into the vga it works correctly but the other still is all white , another thing that i found is strange is thet the touch part of the screen is not part of the screen it is just a lot of ir leds around a sheet of glass
the screen is a sharp lq14x03e
i dont see any numbers on the touch part
any ideas??Question?.......i thot that was self explaning how do get the screen to show SOMETHING properYou mean the touch screen, I assume. I'm not familiar with them. What OS does this computer run on? If a Windows version, try looking in Display Properties>Settings and see what is shown as a monitor.since the touch part and the screen part a seporate i was planing on fixing the screen first

it is an old comp running windows 95
and the display settings only shows one of the 2 moniters and it sez "Laptop display panel (1024x768)"Looks like the display is correctly identified by the system - if you are going to replace it, I don't think that I can help you from here. If the system is similar to a laptop, there are many good 'how to' articles on the web for REPLACING laptop screens. I guess that you could also check with Sharp or the computer mfg.

Best of luck.if i unplug the bad screen nothing changes which means that it is the bad one that is not being detected

and i have no intention of replacing it i am looking for a way of fixing it if at all posiblePost the exact mfg and model of the computer - "an old computer from my work" is not much to go on!

If this is set up similar to a laptop, there are two areas to look at: inverter and backlight.

Look for documentation for your computer on the web and look for articles on replacing INVERTERS and backlights.

Post the asked for specs and maybe someone here will be familiar with the computer.sorry the computer is from a 3/4 million $ computerized saw thet is meny years old so the computer is only 200mhz 64mb ram mb is p5bv3+ running win 95
and the backlight seems to work how do i check the inverterSounds like you have a very SPECIALIZED, old unit and a fun project!

I have no idea, really, what you are dealing with, so, I suggest that you use Google.

Best of luck.

Solve : I'm begging and ready to cry. Laptop won't start, help please!?

Answer»

Ok, so here is the deal: I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC that's about a year and half old. I've NEVER had any problems with until now.

About a 2 weeks ago, I get an automatic message from HP telling me that my type of computer may have a hardware problem and that I should USE some sort of survey thing to check if my computer is one of them. I started and found out my computer probably did have this problem (whatever it was), but I didn't finish the survey, because it was getting very long and I got this message just as I was about to leave on vacation, where I would not be using the computer. I figured I could just pick up where I left off when I got back-- wrong.

Almost as soon as I got back my computer started, well, bugging out, for lack of a better term. My screen started spazzing and got all line-y, then it restarted itself. I started it in safe mode to see if I could figure out what had happened, but in truth I had no clue what to look for. I tried to start it regular again, which was obviously a mistake, because I then got the blue screen, which then restarted itself, and then it tried some sort of auto-repair, which failed about 3-4 TIMES, restarting itself after each time. I tired taking out the battery, just to see if it would help-- it didn't. So, I just turned it off.

I asked a friend who knows some stuff about computers to see what he thought, but when I turned on my computer to show him what was happening, it wouldn't start. The lights came on, but the screen was black, blank, dead. He tried everything he knew of to get it to WORK, all of which I don't understand, but could probably describe, if that would be helpful. This is the point I'm at now.

I tired calling HP Support, but because my computer is more than a year old, they won't even talk to me over the phone unless I pay 50 bucks, which being a poor college student, I don't have. Please, please help me. I haven't even finished paying off the friggin thing and I can't afford to get a new one, even THOUGH I need one for class. I'll provide you with any details/info I can if it will help! I'm so stressed that I'm literally in tears.

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!
P.S.
Just remember I also got some weird messages as it was trying to fix itself.Sorry to hear your story. I can't really help you with anything technical as I'm in severe difficulty with my computer at the moment, and getting some help from the kind people here myself!

What does stand out from your post though is that HP say they won't talk to you, presumably because it's run out of warranty - but the problem happened because of a hardware fault, which is down to THEM, not you! I'd try and find out if they can replace your computer or fix it for free - errr, I'm not a lawyer either but it sounds like they've got a duty if it was a hardware fault caused by them.

Sorry I can't be more help. Thanks, at least you responded to my post... Did I break some rule? Why is no one answering? T_TWhat Windows Operating System?

Then I INSTALLED Diablo on a brand new laptop and guess what: the GAME runs fine. Solve : Problem with Audio Driver?

Answer»

Okay. So recently my BROTHER downloaded a trojan virus on my computer by mistake. After we rebooted the computer, we noticed that we didn't have audio. After several attempts to find the disk that contained the driver, we ended up looking online for it. After searching for a while I discovered the driver on Microsofts website and downloaded. This didn't FIX the problem however as, for some reason, my computer does not allow me to use it still. It says the status of the driver is "Enabled but not Functioning" and when I click settings it tells me that it "Cannot Locate Realtek AC'97 Audio Drivers. The driver file may be missing. Try INSTALLING the driver again or contact your systems administrator." I've re-downloaded the driver multiple times now, and it hasn't worked. Any help with this issue would be appreciated. What happened to the trojan?Hey There,

As far as the missing driver file its most likely a result of the trojan, but you probably already figured that out. Try downloading AVG anti-virus from www.downloads.com its free and it great. I've used it for several years and this program has found viruses that NORTON and Macafee didn't, then try reinstalling the drivers from your manufacturers web site.
You also may want to check out System care 3.0 also from www.downloads.com it will greatly improve your systems PERFORMANCE like what you see on tv lately but this is free!

Good Luck,
TroyThat driver should be included in the MBoard driver CD...Hi
THis mirrors a problem I had with audio .
I solved it (with help) this way.
Download the driver and save it in a file.I used a file in my documents.
Uninstall the audio device.
run find hardware the program will find the audio hardware.and install.
The device is installed but should then give you the find driver.
take the program though untill you get the choice of where to look
do not use the bottom one to find a suitable driver
use the look in other places choice.(not disc or update )
browse the programs untill you find the driver
point the program at the file the driver is in

return to the choices click ok and the driver should load
I hope I got all the steps you will see it work as you do it.
I had to use this for the vidio drive as well.

Solve : System won't boot?

Answer»

My WXP Pro system recently crashed and rebooted during use. Upon reboot, a message came up re no Operating system. I checked cables to the drive and rebooted. Success, so I imaged my system for protection. Rebooted and the system got to Windows logo and rebooted, cycled over and over doing the same thing.
Procedures done: 1. Tried another drive with a restored o/s. Crashed the same way. Ruled out the drives as problem. 2. Ran mem86 for 3 hours. Ruled out memory problems. Also, swapped positions on the 2 memory sticks, and also tested w/1 stick at a time. Same results. 3. Ran Prime95 to test the dual core processor. Both cores ran at 100% with no apparent problems. 4. Installed Windows XP Pro clean. System booted up fine. Restored a July 2007 OS, system failed to boot. 5. Today, I installed a new FoxConn mobo (ASUS felt the original was defective). Boot up produced same results, except, now I don't get to the Windows logo. I get to the screen to boot up regular or Safe mode. Either choice produces a reboot. 6. I tested with a different pair of memory (same type), same results.
So, I rule out the mobo and memory. CPU appears to test OK, but - can it be the culprit? Or the PSU perhaps (OCZ 520w, 3 yr OLD)? Any other test out there for the CPU (AMD Athlon 64x2, dual core, 3 yr old)?
Any assistance WOULD be greatly appreciated. My first suspect judging on the info you provided would be the PSU...
Borrow one and swap it in there to see.
If not were looking at either the CPU or board...but you did say you swapped boards correct ? ?Hi, Thank you for your reply. Yes, I did install a new FoxConn mobo to replace ASUS mobo and still have the same problem. I will now purchase a new PSU, since I don't have one on hand to substitute trial with.
I have OCZ PSU, 520w, just over 3 years old. I do no gaming. I normally run 3 drives along with the dvd (C drive, Data drive, Backup drive). However, during these problems, only the C and DVD drives are connected, with the same problem. PCI monitor card. According to the research I did when I built this machine 9/2005, 520w was more power than I needed. Do you feel this size is adequate? Any brand preferences? Many thanks for your help. Some good info

Also visit PCPower & Cooling for lot's more info on PSU's and their construction...Thank you for the link. I'll check it out. Actually the last PSU i bought was an OCZ because i was curious as to their quality...
It was a modular cable design i installed in a customers machine and i was pleasantly impressed...currently running a CoolerMaster.

P.S. There are still some issues with the modular cable design so if you don't absolutely need it right now get a traditional...Hi, Patio,

Up until now, I've had no problems with the OCZ PSU. It has lots of adjustments available, but I'm no tinkerer or over-clocker. Just want a good, stable machine. Both systems I have built the past 3 years are housed in Cooler Master cases. I love them! The second one, for my husband's machine, was an even easier case to work in. I love the "screwless" system for locking in the drives and cards.
Thanks for the hint on "modular". I'll avoid them for now. Anything new usually NEEDS time to work out the kinks.
In checking my files, I found that the OCZ has a 5 year warranty. Explains why we paid so much. I'll be contacting them tomorrow and see where we go from there.
Many thanks for info. Much appreciated!Upon reboot, a message came up no Operating system. This means the drive your're trying to boot from has no OS. What I would do is:
1.load to CMOS setup
2.set 1st boot to CD/DVD ROM
3.Save and Exit setup
4.Insert a bootable CD
5.load to command prompt
6.Type SYS C:
7.Press Enter
after this process restart ur system. Ovie aka TrizleQuote from: Trizle1 on January 01, 2009, 06:34:10 PM

Hi, Trizle,
Thanks for the info. I'm not sure what this does. At present, when I boot, I get to the point of the Windows logo, then a crash/reboot. REPEATS over and over, if I let it. I only got the "no o/s" the first time it crashed. Since then, I do get a start in Windows, just not a complete load. When I installed a fresh install of WXP Pro, it booted just fine into the basic program. Then, when I restored a July 2007 image with all of my programs, it would get to the logo and reboot. Since it does this with 2 different drives, and with a new motherboaard, and different memory sticks, I suspect the CPU or PSU. Any thoughts? Others have suggested PSU, which is the direction I am leaning in. I will be contacting OCZ today for their input or replacement, since the PSU is still under warranty. Thank you for your input. I appreciate it.Just to note here... They said they swapped mobo's right?

If these boards have a different chipset, a restored XP installation will fail to boot.
This is because XP is trying to load chipset drivers that do not work with that machine. and will loop a BSOD until you repair the installation using the XP disk. (i.e using the repair installation option rather than installing over the top)

Hope this helps.Thank you, Kurtiskain, for your input. It makes sense. It is a different brand mobo, so your comment sounds logical. I contacted OCZ today re the PSU and they said it did NOT sound like the PSU was causing the problem. This makes your comment even more noteworthy. I'll give that a try and advise the result. Many thanks!!! Good to hear about the PSU, and yes I agree that it is not the PSU.
If it still does not fix the problem however...before it loads to the loading screen, access the Windows startup menu by tapping F8 just after the BIOS disappears and select "disable automatic restart on system failure" and note down the details off the BSOD screen, and I will try to find out what is causing it

KurtisHi, Kurtis,
I want to thank you so VERY much for your first suggestion!!! It WORKED!!!
I had to Google for info to be sure I did things right, and found a set of instructions at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/repair.txt The primary method he recommended wouldn't work, so I used his "Warning 2" method, figuring if it failed, I would simply have to re-install Windows. After a few trials and mis-steps of my own, it booted up and began looking for new drivers, etc. I put in the new mobo disc and Voila! everything loaded. I now have a few tweaks to do, like verify my network link, but I was able to dial out and update my Panda antivirus, then ran a scan of the drive. Nothing was found.
Your new post is also very helpful. I had seen the message flash as the system failed and rebooted, but didn't know how to be able to "read" the message. Since right now I'm working on the second drive which I had restored (using Drive Image) with my current system when the system first failed (I had removed it to preserve the drive while I tried to "fix" the problem using a back-up drive.) I will re-install the original drive and follow your instructions, to see what was causing the system to fail. I'll post that info when I do. Today, I have to help hubby with his "tractor won't start" problem, so I won't be doing anything with the computer until later today or this evening.
Words of thanks can't possibly say enough!!! I am so appreciative of your help!!! The very best to you in this New Year!!! You are very welcome

Happy new year to you too

Hope the tractor doesn't give you too many problems!
And also hope your computer problems smooth themselves out.

Solve : Question About Memory Upgrades?

Answer»

Hello! I was just curious, Im looking to breath some LIFE into my old PC with some decent Ram.

This my Mobo - http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=P4I65G

I was thinking about buying this set of Ram

Could anyone confirm that this ram is compatible with my system?

I think it can as it says it accepts DDR400, boards max is 2GB but im a little lost when it says "non-ECC, un-buffered memory"

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!Yes that memory will work just fine

Great choice too, hard to find matched ram here in NZ, might not be where you COME from THOUGH Hi, I was on this prob the other day, technical hardware computers confuses me, this website should help you, it tells you whats inside and whats compatable.

Solve : No boot up-- Computer Problems?

---Computer specs---
MOTHERBOARD: EVGA 680i SLI
CPU: Intel Duo 2.4gHz
RAM: 4 GB
HDD: 1 tera

*EVERYTHING WORKED FINE BEFORE MY SCHOOL BREAK. I SHUT DOWN PROPERLY ALSO. *

I recently just got back to school to find that my desktop doesn't BOOT up. I left it in my dorm room with it plugged into my surge protector. It was turned off. I tried to boot it up and the monitor doesn't get signal nor my keyboard or mouse.

I let it sit for a while to listen to the drives. They all seem to power on, but sound like they are caught in a loop. The LED output on the motherboard reads "--" which I am unsure what it means. It is suppose to read "FF" meaning boot, so I believe there is a problem.

I have reset the BIOS and also tested the monitor. Neither fix the problem.

Is it possible the motherboard broke or that the CPU burnt out? It could also be a virus doing this, I not ruling that out. At this point I am OK with completely resetting everything if that would fix the problem.

Any help would be most appreciated.Ok this isn't really a solution but I have had my motherboard do that too, the drives re-initialize over and over, as WELL as the DVD drive.

I just had to reseat everything and it was ok, so unplug all your DVD/HD's and also reseat your graphics cards and any other PCI/PCI-e cards, also the PSU plugs (don't forget the 4pin connector) and try to boot without the drives plugged in again

if it boots after that, add one component at a time.

Yes, residual charge could have broken capacitors, but this is like finding a living organism sealed in concrete after spending 1000 years underground.

Not unless it was used while you were away I was going to ask...who had access to the Dorm while you were away ? ?
Not that they're going to admit anything...

Solve : Hard Drive Problems - Not Being Detected?

Answer»

A few days ago I started getting some problems - my computer was crashing to the blue screen, telling me there was a hard drive problem. At first, this just occurred once randomly, but then it started crashing every TIME time I started up Windows and got to the desktop - within 30 seconds or so, it would crash and restart itself. It's gotten to the point where I simply get the SYSTEM BOOT FAILURE message and can't even get anywhere (also, sometimes it just hangs up and I don't get the message, and it just freezes up). To complicate things, I have two hard drives that were in a RAID 0 setup. I figured it might be a hard drive problem but the chances of both of them being out are pretty low. I tried utilizing ONE hard drive but BIOS doesn't seem to be picking them up, as there aren't any hard drives listed when I do so. I've deleted and remade the RAID setup, which will show up in the hard drive listing, but I still have the same problem. If I insert the Windows XP System Disc it is unable to install because the hard drive isn't detected. I'm also not completely sure, but nothing is showing up in the SATA drive listings in BIOS - I can't remember if this is where the hard drive is supposed to be (somewhat experienced but not enough.) The drives themselves function - they aren't completely dead and are running and spinning. I've disconnected a few cables when taking the drives out of where they're tucked away but it should be set up correctly. At this point I'm lost as to what the problem is - I've never had the computer unable to locate a hard drive. Any help would be much appreciated, hopefully this post isn't too confusing or lacking any info. This is what I would do. First I agree with your approach of using one HD only so that the problem solving is simplified. I would try a spare cable and boot to bios with just one HD and see if a HD appears. No point going any further if the bios does not identify the HD. If the new cable has same EFFECT as old then I'd get a spare HD and boot with that.

By doing this process of elimination you can hopefully narrow down to where the problem is.

Another suggestion I have is to use some compressed AIR to blow out dust etc. Computers accumulate so much fine gunge in them and sometimes a good clean can fix problems such as where there is a poor connection.

Solve : HDD can't access?

Answer»

i have a seagate 250gb HDD (IDE), this HD has a corrupt MFT but luckily i already recovered all the FILES i need, the prob is when i format this HD a message alwayas prompt when the format is at 99% saying "can't format DISK". I also try to format it in a windows xp sp2 cd but i can't highlight this HD it says ""

What I'm gonna do? Can my I still use this HD or is it for replacement already?
Please enlighten me!!!

Im USING windows xp, 2GB RAM, AMD Sempron.Have you DELETED and recreated the partition before formatting?yup that's what I exactly did... did i make it wrong? Try hooking it up as a slave drive on a working machine and run chkdsk /r on it...
Let it run to completion.
Then DLoad the Free SeaTools from Seagate's site and use the tools to create a bootable CD.
Boot to the CD and under the drive preperation tools do a low-level format ( write zeros )
Both of these operations will take some time so be patient.
When finished try the Windows format on it to make sure it is usable...

Solve : Computer Turns On By Itself ???

Hello everyone,

I just built my girlfriend a new desktop system, and she is having a problem with it turning on by itself.

Now, I know of one problem to look for is the "Wake On LAN" in the bios.

But if this is not the problem, what else can I look for? Has anyone had this problem with the cause coming from something other than the bios?

She lives far from me and wanted to go prepared to look for other causes to her problem without having to make multiple trips to her house.

One thing to check is the wake on mouse/KB option, i.e when the mouse moves it starts.

I also have an option on my board to start at any given time pre-set in the bios.

is the power point/connection secure?
There is an option in the BIOS that states when power is lost, when the power comes back, whether to boot or o stay off or to return to previous state.

Those are just my insights

Am I the only person that literally DISCONNECTS the computer from the wall (I shut the surge protector off)? when I'm not using it?

you really work with some strange hardware kurtiskain... motherboards that support both internal and add-on Video cards, computers that turn on with keyboard/mouse activity from power-off state Thanks for the insight... I will post back my findings.

Haha yeah I guess I do.

I used to work alot with old Socket 7 boards because older seemed to just give and give and give, now you replace stuff here and there every 2 DAYS it seems.

anyways yes I do switch it off at the wall, but only at night time.

ASUS P4Pe Mobo - lets me turn on from POS - built in I guess, most motherboards let you do this I'm certain, I even came across a slot-1 Mobo that allowed you to type in a 4 letter "password" to allow the computer to power up.

but hey I am in NZ, maybe we get all the weird equipment?? :S lol

anyways goodluck Durkis

I switch off at the wall every time I power down. This also takes out peripherals such as modem etc. I got into the habit after one day coming home and find my pc had powered up all by itself. I had a dust cover on at the time so very luck not to start a fire. Good for the environment to turn everything off. One cause of this occurrence is that you cloned your OS from another pc instead of doing an install from scratch. What happens is the Power Management settings in the cloned OS do not match the hardware. Mine hasn't done it since I did a fresh install but I'm not going to take a chance.

Solve : Multiple identical CD drive failures?

Answer»

I recently bought a used CD drive for my daughters laptop (Dell Inspiron E1505 bought 2006). She had broken the tray on the original some time ago and I needed to reinstall the operating SYSTEM (bad virus). The CD drive I bought was the same model as originally in the computer (Lite-on SOSW-852S). The replacement drive worked long enough to get the OS installed and updated and I was adding applications when the drive failed. It just squeaked REPEATEDLY when a disk was inserted and would not read. I located and installed the latest Lite-on driver from the Internet, but it didn't help. To finish the install, I borrowed a CD drive from my son's laptop, which worked. I contacted the supplier who sold me the drive, gave them the story and they sent me a second used drive, same model. This drive also worked at first. I was able to install several PROGRAMS, play a DVD, burn a CD and burn a DVD. My DAUGHTER was then burning a collection of music CDs when this second drive failed in exactly the same way as the first.
Before I go back to the supplier to tell them that a second drive has failed, I'd like to know: Is possible that my daughter's laptop is killing these drives, or have I just had bad luck? What is more likely? Also, is there anything else I can do to trouble shoot the drive? I have a fresh OS install (XP), all MS updates, and the latest Lite-on driver.
Would appreciate any GUIDANCE you can offer! I'd say bad luck, or bad model.
Especially, since it was a used one.

This is not an endorsement of this VENDOR. I've never purchased anything there, just had it in my bookmarks, and your post reminded me of it. I'd noted that they seemed to have some old type stuff.

I hope it helps.
Hey There,

Check out Ebay they have some good deals, just MAKE sure you buy a new CPU fan, not used and check the sellers feedback. I dont buy from anyone with less than a 98% possitive feedback rating. You can also try compusa.com, or Newegg.com.

originally installed this DRIVE via firewire. works fine, but not happy with the transfer rate (average 38.8mb/s). So i wanted to try it via USB. powered down the drive, removed the FW cable, powered the drive back up (dunno if its hot swappable, didnt want to chance it) and plugged in the USB cable. windows went thru the typ new hardware installation, but it said it failed. so now the computer doesnt see the drive at all when using USB as far as I can tell. works fine via FW. any solutions? anyway to speed up the transfer rate with FW?

FYI, I tried the drive on my laptop, both FW and USB works fine. tried different USB cables and ports, no success.

edit: And I've already contacted WD, basically they cant do anything........however I did get a free upgrade from a 750gb to a 1tb drive!bumphttp://www.usb-ware.com/firewire-vs-usb.htm

clear jump like when USB1.1 hit the MARKET. Maximum throughput on this port is 480Mbits (60 MB) per

Firewire 400 – This 1st generation Firewire connection is found on about 30% of PC’s by default.
Maximum throughput on this port is 400Mbits (50MB) per second.
Firewire 800 – This 2nd generation Firewire connection is currently found on very few PC’s by default.
Maximum throughput on this port is 800Mbits (100MB) per second.
Serial-ATA (SATA) – This is a newer technology which is not an external port by default. New hard drives
are connected internally by this connection but external connections are, for now, only available by request.
Maximum throughput on this port is 1200Mbits (150MB) per second.

from http://www.powerlandcomputers.com/PDF%20Brochures/firewire-usb.pdf

i reckon you have firewire 400, so the difference is about 10mb/s. i personally wouldn't PUT the effort into trying to get it sorted (because i have no idea how) and it's good they sent you a 1tb version.
