Solve : New printer won't write checks with Quicken program?

Answer»

Hello!
My sister has MS and needs to print checks using Basic Quicken 2007. She bought a new printer - an HP Photosmart C4180 - and it won't allow her to print checks. She talked to a rep at HP who told her she needs to buy a different printer ($900.00 - not an option) and a different rep told her she needs to have an inkjet printer instead of a Photosmart. She's not running a business; she just needs to be able to print the occassional personal check. Can anyone help us, please? Thanks!

She talked to a rep at HP who told her she needs to buy a different printer ($900.00 - not an option) and a different rep told her she needs to have an inkjet printer instead of a Photosmart.
That advice from HP is absolute non-sense. Just about any printer that's capable of PRINTING 8 1/2 X 11 paper should work fine for printing checks. That Photosmart C4180 is an All-in-One unit, isn't it? Clearly, it should print from Word, Excel, etc., and therefore, can print checks. Has she used the printer for plain text documents? Exactly what happens when she tries to print a check?

The problem may be in setting up the print SETTINGS for printing a check WITHIN Quicken. I suggest you/she visit Quicken Community / Forums / Quicken for Windows and TRY using that forum for this issue.

And from what i've read if this is an "AHEM " version of Quicken this won't work...

Solve : safe to shut down puter?

Answer»

I told my daughter I'd ask anyone here if they had any IDEA why this happens.
When they boot up the puter it does that fine but in a minute or two a popup comes up and says it is now safe to cut off your computer.
I forgot to ask her what kind of puter she has or how old it is.
Thanks for any help.
CDDoes it give you an option to cancel the shutdown or does it just shutdown without you being able to use it?
It could be a virus or another form of malware. Try running some antivirus and anti-spyware software on it.
Many forum members would ADVISE these programs: AVG Antivirus FREE, AVG Anti-Spyware, Adaware 2007, and Spybot Search & Destroy
http://us.mcafee.com/ also has a free online virus scanner (no removal)

Also, GET back to us on the specs of the computer and everything
Be sure to boot into safe MODE when you run the scans. (press F8 while the computer is booting up) A lot more info on the machine, OS and what happened prior to this would be useful...

Solve : usb drive troubles?

Answer»

I have a user who is trying to use a usb thumb drive but is UNABLE to view it. She is on a WINDOWS 2000 Professional system. When I log on to that system as administrator or myself, I am able to see the drive in My computer. She is setup as administrator of the box, so she doesn't have any restrictions on her account. Is there something very basic I am overlooking? The funny thing is that my account on that system is setup as a poweruser. You would think that I would be the one who wouldn't have access to the drive.

My temporary solution for this is to log in as myself, and copy her data from her thumb drive to her C:\ drive and have her log back in using the copy of her file off of the C:\ drive.

Any advice?

If you NEED any additional information please let me know.Sound like something in her account might be corrupted

Might try creating another account, then COPING her info to it.

Alan <>< How would I go about creating another account? Wouldn't I just delete her OLD account as being logged in as administrator and have her log back in again to rebuild the account? I'm sure this is very simple, but I've never done anything like this before.

but there is no other otion WITHOUT changing my modem.Have you tried installing the XP drivers? Some XP drivers will still work in Vista, although since this is 64bit you'll need to find a 64bit XP driver.

If this doesn't work and there isn't any Vista drivers available, then you're pretty much out of luck.Yes I tried win xp driver too.

I install modem in xp & ran verywell.

Solve : xfx geforce 8800 problems connection to a 32" Lcd?

Answer»

Hi

I hope someone can help me out here because i have spent the biggest part of today trying to work it out. I have just upgraded my card from a Geforce 7800 gt to the xfx Geforce 8800 GTS.

The problem i have is when i connect this to my 32" LG LCD telivision using dvi, all the icons on the desktop are over lapping, in other words the screen size doesn't fit it is to big. I have tried a number of resolutions but none work.

my old graphics card works fine. I made sure i uninstalled the drivers of the old card and got the LATEST for the new ONE, but still KNOW joy. There is also no setting on my Lcd television that allows me to shrink the screen, but like my old Graphics card, it should just detect the size automatic. I would really appreciate any help Thanks!the tv resolution is 1366 x 768

the maximum resolution for that card is 2560 x 1600

try changing the xfx Geforce 8800 GTs to the tv's display resolution Tried it, but its still the same. Here's an UPDATE I just did a windows reinstall to rule out it been windows and its still the same. 2 computers work fine on that LCD using dvi, but not this new graphics card. So can somone tell me what could be wrong with the card. It has 2 dvi plugs and i have tried both, but still no joy. Unless someone else here has some good news (advice), might consider calling XFX Mfg and see if you can speak to tech support and tell them the exact problem you posted?? Never know, maybe they might have a solution, sorry couldn't help but good luck ...Hi
Ok, maybe somone could help me another way. Can somone tell me, if this had been a normal computer Lcd and not a 32" television Lcd, would i be able to move the screen to fit. Like on the CTR monitors.

Solve : Where should second HDD be located??

Answer»

Wanted to hook up a second hard drive primarily for backups and locating the page file in an exclusive partition for faster access. Its an IDE drive: presently on Channel IDE 0 I have a HDD as master and on Channel IDE 1 the CD/DVD drive also as master. I've been advised NOT to hook up the second HDD as slave on IDE 0 as it would slow down my machine and the very purpose of locating the page file for achieving faster access would be defeated since the OS on the master and slave in IDE 0 would both be constantly accessed thus slowing down both drives. Would it be advisable therefore that I hook up the second physical HDD as master or slave on IDE 1 to improve performance?
Grateful for your views/recommendations.
vkr15vkr15...... If I was doing that , I would be putting both the Hard drives on the primary IDE. Others may have differing opinions.

Paging File Performance - The paging file issue has been beaten to death time and time again, but it's still a fact that placing the paging file in a separate partition - on a different hard drive from the system drive - will aid performance in the majority of cases. If nothing else, it will help eliminate fragmentation of the primary drive that can seriously impact performance as the paging file is expanded and contracted.
What kind of a system do you have?

dl65

Couldn't agree with you more dl65.
The logic being put forward by proponents of locating page file on a different channel to the one where the OS is located is because of constant access to both the system files on the OS and the page file when running your programs or apps thus slowing it down. So, though it will help prevent fragmentation of the page file(if both hard drives are on the primary IDE) it would impact on the performance because of constant head movement on the hard drives. To obviate this,so the proponents SAY, it would be better to locate the second hard drive on a different channel. This is really applicable to IDE drives(not SCSI or SATA drives). Since this issue (of locating the paging file to a second hard drive on a different channel other than the OS) was not mentioned on any of the web pages that I researched, I thought I would seek a second opinion.

My system is pretty basic and would like to keep it that way:-
XP Home with SP 2.
RAM 768 MB
Intel processor 2.6 ghz, on board graphics.
IDE 0 & IDE 1 drives.( IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers)
Thankful for your views.
vkr15I too have tried to connect two HD's, and the computer will not recognize the second drive, I had replaced the 40 GIG with a 200, and was told a while back by a friend that I could use the 40 to run the main apps, how do I get my Dell to recognize both without any conflics, both are still in the computer, but only the 200 gig is hooked up.

Do you have any good references to support that theory? I'm not sure it's true. But, if it is, my guess is you should SET the second drive as master on IDE 1 if you connect it to IDE 1, and set the CD-ROM as slave.

Have you looked at the report Windows Disk Defragmenter generates when you run it to see what it shows for pagefile fragmentation? I have never done anything special to defragment the paging file on my Win XP Pro SP2 OS partition, but Disk Defragmenter only reports 1 fragment, indicating no fragmentation. I have my paging file set for a minimum size of 768MB and a maximum size of 1536.
I'd like to see someone who can actually notice a speed difference by setting up a pagefile this way.

I set it up 3 or 4 times this way and others following the thousands of website offerings and advice given a few years back.

I'll take the time spent, pay myself at my going rate and add a new stick of RAM anyday...

Just my thoughts. Thanks to dl65,soybean,patio for your views/thoughts/recommendations.

Solve : Old hard drive mounted is USB case not seen?

Answer»

I recently bought a new computer with XP on it. My old machine was 98ME. I bought an external USB case for my old hard drive. I removed the drive from my old machine and installed it into the USB case. When I plug the old and now external hard drive into my new machine's USB port, it installs the new hardware driver, but does not assign a drive letter.

When I went back to CompUSA (where I bought the USB case), the technician said there is a problem with the partition information and XP can't see it.

If the disk is good enough to boot to 98ME in the old system (still is), why can't XP see the drive?

Is there a drive utility that I can run that would tweak the partition info to make it CLEAN for XP, and not LOOSE my data?

FYI, mounting the drive directly in the new computer does the same thing, so the problem is not with the USB external hard drive case.

Thank you in advance for any help.
check the jumper setting, try put jumper to CS.
post back your result, thank!I will give that a try. I'll post the results, positive or negative.

ThanksGo to your control panel, admin tools, disk management and activate, format and asign it a letter. youl figure it out once your thereAaaaaah! But the key is that I don't want to lose the data on the old drive. I am attaching it to the new computer to do file copies from the old drive to my new system without having to create a BUNCH of CD's.

As AA last resort, I'll do just that. Once the data is backed up, I plan to redo the partition and then use it to back up my new system.

ThanksTo retrieve the data hook it up INTERNALLY as a SLAVE drive...then format it , assign it a drive letter that's not being used and a volume name...it wshould now work flawlessly.

patio. 8-)I've decided to put the old drive back in the old unit. Install a used cd writer and backup my data to cd.

After that is done, I will put it back into the external case, remove and recreate the partition. Then I will use it for backing up my new machine.

Thanks for the help.

Solve : Keyboard doesn't work?

Answer»

Hello, I'm new here in this forum and I have problem with my PC. It happened when I have restart my PC. The LEDs should lights up when the PC boots up but now the keyboard doesn't react at all. When I try to PRESS any key the mouse will not work either. Well, the PC boots up and I can log-in using mouse becuase I didn't put password on user log-in. But when I press any of the keys the PC hangs. I don't know what to do. I ENDED up borrowing my brother's System Unit. Is it the motherboard's PS/2 port? What would be the cause?

Thanks in advance. Hoping for any solutions...http://oror.essortment.com/troubleshooting_rzlu.htm
http://ntcompatible.com/PS2_Keyboard_doesnt_work_in_Windows_XP_anymore_t29794.htmlI would try another PS2 keyboard that you know is working in that machine. Turn the machine off before swapping keyboards...

patio. 8-)I figure out that the PC doesn't hangs at all only the mouse freezes when I tried to press any of the keys on my keyboard.
@stonesComputer Isn't Taking Inputs From Keyboard

1. Is keyboard connected to computer? Ensure that the keyboard is plugged into the keyboard jack and not into the mouse jack. If the keyboard was UNPLUGGED, plug it back in and reboot the computer.

2. If the keyboard still doesn't work on boot-up, power down the computer and try to borrow a friend’s known-good keyboard for troubleshooting. Plug the new keyboard up and boot up the computer. If the new keyboard works, the old keyboard is BAD and needs to be replaced.

3. If the known-good keyboard doesn't work, check your BIOS to make sure it sees the keyboard. It should say, "installed." If the BIOS recognizes the keyboard, then you PROBABLY have a bad keyboard port.

>How can I access the BIOS...Any keyboard won't work. And the PC start always normal mode. Can't even go to Safe mode.
>I've transferred keyboard, mouse, HDD, FDD, RAM, Video Card to my other System Unit and they're functioning well.
>What would be the problem?
>How can I access the BIOS?

Solve : Ram not right?

Answer»

I bought an emachine t3516a at Best Buy the day before they came out with vista. Very last pc in the store. Got it for $300. All the papers with it says it has 512 mb RAM and 256 mbs for video, but the pc only shows 380 for ram and 128 for video. Did I get had or is there a way to fix this? I moved the ram from slot to slot, thinking that it just wasn't snug or something. STILL say I only have 380 mbs.

It is shared video. There is no separate video card, so it uses RAM from the 512 for the video adapter. It is as it should be for a shared video system. it may have said "up to 256 RAM" and this would be true if you had 1 gig of RAM TOTAL. Read it again carefully. It may have been misrepresented if it implied there was a separate video car with 256 RAM on it (which would be unheard of for a $300 eMachine).

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2078642,00.aspYou could buy a dedicated graphics card to free up that memory.I've been looking on tigerdirect.com. I don't want anything that'll break the BANK, but something that'll do a fairly NICE job. All I play are game like caesar 4 and stuff like that. so I don't need a really high end card. Which nvidia card would you all recommend?Does it have to be an Nvidia card?
What's your budget?
And what graphics slot do you have?Is this your computer?

Solve : Inaccurate HD readings??

This may not be the RIGHT forum for this, but here goes...

my pc is old, and has a few smaller hd's in it.. the main is 5.97 GB.. but here lies the problem..

when i click on the hd in my computer, it says 5.34 used, 649 meg free.. but when i go into it, and select all, it shows 8,093,351 bytes, on the LEFT hand side.. .. when i right click on it then, it says that all the files SELECTED are 3.89 gb, and 4,267,311,104 bytes.. now my math isnt great, but i know how bytes go into meg,. and meg into gig.. so.. am i an idiot, or is this a problem?Hard drive space calculations are different than you might think. Solve : Hard Drive -Boot.ini question?

Answer»

I took a 60GB HD out of a blown motherboard HP computer and installed it into an eMachines system that was given to me which I upgraded from a 2.0 Ghz Celeron to a 2.66Ghz P4. When installing WINDOWS 2000 Pro to this hard drive I selected for it to DELETE the C and D partitions. Then created a new C: partition that was 60GB. Windows 2000 Pro installed to this new partition, and the next TIME I turned the system on I noticed that it had the option for Windows 2000 or Windows XP Home at a Boot.ini choice SCREEN. I selected 2000 vs XP Home, and the OS loaded fine.

What I am trying to figure out is if i wiped off the partitions, and started a new clean partition, how did the system know that there was XP Home on this HD after the partitions were wiped clean and a new partition created. I since have gone into the boot.ini to remove the XP Home option, but thought I would post this to see if anyone knows how this happened???

Thanks,

Davedo the zap 1st,using CD ,it just delete patition, and wipe.
but do ZAP,the MBR will be wipe.
i have a problem HD before, and i try n try many times using installation CD to format, partition.but my winXP always have problem.
then, i try zap 1st, the problem is solved.Ya. That's right solution. zap can solve the problem.

What is "zap"? Is it a software program?

Depends on the model. You're jumping to conclusions, Squall.

Full HARDWARE specs? Especially motherboard model. What exactly is the problem that you think you need to reset the CMOS? More info please.Sorry just answering the question, thats what they asked.i just want to know what is the difference.
I just want experiment it,what would happend.
because according to spec, it ASK me to remove battery 1st,then reset jumper to clear CMOS settings.
but i just remove jumper, and it also done,CMOS reset.
As with a lot of things there is more than one way to do things....
Both will do the same thing.Dear Friend,

Quote
It didnt work correctly before and i have tried the jumpers.
As GX1_Man says it is time to get your mobo manual out.
Setting jumpers is only part of what you NEED to do, if indeed your board uses "multiplier jumpers".

Your system right now is running at safe BIOS settings, sometimes called default settings by design.
A newly installed mobo or a flashed BIOS will often be set to these safe settings on the first startup.
In this way the mobo mfr is presenting his PRODUCT to you, so that you, the builder, can apply optimum settings.
If the mobo mfr were to guess at what your optimum settings should be applied, the mobo may not POST, depending on what your components are.

With your mobo manual in hand, enter your BIOS Setup Utility...the manual will show you how.

You are looking for something like "Advanced Chipset Features". This is where you set the FSB clock frequency.
Set it to what your CPU requires and if you have the multiplier jumper set correctly, voila, your CPU will be running at design speed. You may have to reboot.

Don't forget to Save and then Exit your way out of BIOS.

If you don't have a manual, you should be able to D/L it from ECS.
You will want to go through all your BIOS settings LINE by line and make sure that they are optimum.
If you don't understand a setting, leave it alone until you do.
Write down what the "found" setting was and then what you changed it to.

Here is a link that will help clarify some of the BIOS settings:
http://www.techarp.com/freebog.aspx

Your BIOS will not have all these options, but sometimes the Guide is useful when the mobo manual is not.

Solve : raid5 question?

Answer»

I'm working on a plan for a new nas server and have six hard drives right now that I can set up in a raid 5 ARRAY. Ultimately I want to have 10 hard drives in the array.
Does anyone know if I can add the four extra drives to the array later WITHOUT having to completely rebuild the array? Or WOULD I have to copy all of my files to another hard drive and delete the array, add the four other drives and rebuild?
I think that's what I'll have to do, but wanted someone else's opinion.
If anyone is interested, in order to be able to add capacity or make any changes to a raid volume, the raid controller must be capable of RAID level migration. Some controllers will even let you make the changes on a live system.
Intel, Promise, and 3ware controllers have this capability. I'm not sure about any others.Changing live ? ?
That's pretty impressive i wasn't aware this could be done.
Course Marge Simpson is probably more fluent in RAID than i am...
I didn't know it could be done either, neither could my supplier. But then I got wise and looked at one of my intel raid controller boxes and it said in bold letters that all intel controllers could do it. Sooo I did all my research to see if it could be done, only to find the answer on a box on my desk. Which RAID modes can this be done with or all of them ? ?Controllers out today let you expand the array by adding drives and than going into the configuration software and telling to USE the new drives. Its dynamic and just refigures the strip set to not only use the new drives but it also changes the old drives to the new strip set. It’s all done automatically.

Its pretty cool stuff....

Solve : Phoenix BIOS POST Beep codes?

Answer»

I have recently installed a second hand Gigabyte GA-8SIMLH M/BOARD into my socket 478 P4 machine replacing a Gigabyte GA-8SG667 board. Specification on both boards say that the 2.0GHz 400FSB CPU and 512 MB DDR333 (single) memory chip I had originally installed are compatible. On starting the machine with the GA-8SIMLH M/board installed, the machine almost immediately gives off short, repeated beeps. Nothing else happens, and there is no video dispay. I have searched websites and asked Gigabyte for help but from that have only become more confused. I have stripped the PC down to M/board, power supply (300W) CPU and memory, with the only connector attached to the board being the soft start. It still beeps. I have then removed the memory - still beeps, but takes an extra second to do so - replaced the memory and removed the CPU - no more beeps. It appears the BIOS is saying that the CPU has failed, but I am not sure. I am also not sure that a single memory chip is appropriate for the GA-8SIMLH board. Has ANYONE had any experience with this problem? What is the BIOS beep code telling me? What has my own experiment told me? MANY THANKS in anticipation of your help.Taking the CPU out proves nothing. What did Gigagbyte tell you that was confusing. What do the beep codes mean according to their site?

Solve : PC freezes soon after boot, no error message/codes?

Answer»

Hi all,

In the last couple of days my PC [Soltek motherboard, P4 3.03GHz, 2GB RAM] has started freezing, won't reboot unless powered off for over half an hour or so.

I'll include as much detail as poss, please let me know which bits are irrelevant and which bits I've missed out!

- will sometimes get all the way into Windows before freezing, sometimes won't get past POST or freezes in BIOS so not a Windows issue [presumably]
- doesn't operate longer than 10 minutes max before freezing
- will not reboot immediately after failing, code 'FF' on motherboard LED
- suspected overheating but observed CPU temp in Advanced Settings in BIOS and didn't exceed 48 deg (before it locked!)
- not memory as swapped it all out and rebooted with exact same symptoms
- I made no hardware or software changes at all before the problem started

Any guidance please? Duff motherboard? Please let me know before I start taking it to bits [something I've never done before and not keen to learn yet ]

Thanks in advanceHow long did you watch the temps in the BIOS before it locked ? ?
Swapping out the RAM doesn't eliminate the RAM being bad...you should run Memtest on it if the machine will run long enough.
But i suspect it could be a failing PSU. Do you have a known good one with close to the same power rating you could swap in there to test this out ? ?

Let us know.

patio. 8-)Thanks for the quick reply -
I watched the temp for about 5 minutes before it locked up, showing 48 deg when it froze.
The memory is 2 x 1GB - I booted up with one, then the other, then took out both and replaced with an old Crucial 512MB (that used to be in this machine) - still the same problem each time after rebooting.
I haven't got a spare PSU but will try to borrow one - any other suggestions in the meantime?

Again many thanks! The only other things you could do in the meantime would be:
Open a side panel on the case and make sure all fans are running properly and not clogged with debris. Use canned air to clean in there if you have to. Do NOT use a vacuum cleaner.
DLoad and run Memtest for that RAM...test one stick at a time and then all together. Let it run a few hours for each test...any errors at all means bad RAM.
And lastly DLoad and run the HDD manuf. free diagnostics on that HDD and check for errors...

That's about it for now.

patio. 8-)Thanks again - all 3 fans were running fine but the CPU fan's heat sink THINGY was pretty FULL of dust so I've now carfully cleaned it out but..... no difference!

It's been powered off all day, booted up and got through POST and as far as just displaying the Windows XP page with the loading bar and froze.
Unfortunately I don't think it'll run long enough to run any diagnostic software.

As a stopgap MEASURE, assuming the HD's not at fault - if I put the HD in another machine as a second disk (it's SATA if it makes a difference), would the other machine recognise it so that I could retrieve files?

Thanks!Yes you should be able to hook up that drive in another machine to retrieve your data...
You will have to install the SATA drivers FIRST though.

Solve : Putting an old hard drive in a new PC?

Answer»

Hello all. I was wondering if any of you wonderful, intelligent people could help me here.

My PC's hard drive recently died on me. It was running Windows XP, but I don't have any boot disks so instead I dug out an older PC that is running Windows 98SE and I am using that for the time being.

I don't mind the dated version of Windows, but everything is so slow (when I double-click a desktop icon, the programme opens about a minute and a half later.) I am guessing the slowness is not SOMETHING that is innate to Windows 98, but is due to the decrepit PC. My questions are:

1.) If I replace the dead hard drive in my newer PC with this working hard drive (which apparently holds a mighty 2GB) will my Windows 98 experience run a lot more quickly and smoothly, in this more up-to-date machine?

2.) Is such an operation even possible without a boot disk?

Sorry if I'm being really stupid here. Thankyou for your time. While this normally won't work with an XP install, I have on occasion transferred a Win 98 drive successfully. You will need drivers for all of your hardware, and it your hardware is very new, there probably won't be any Windows 98 drivers for it.

Do you have your Windows 98 CD?

I'd suggest installing XP, but 2GBs isn't enough for a standard XP install plus any other PROGRAMS you want.Honestly? I would buy a new hard drive (you can get some really good deals) and replace the dead one in the nicer PC. And maybe see if you can find a copy of Windows XP cheaply on E-bay or something....it's always a good idea to have a copy of your OS in case you need to reinstall it to correct an error or you need to format it. Thanks you two.

I was going to buy a new hard drive and a copy of XP eventually anyway, I was just wondering if I could put it off - I'm very miserly you see!

Thanks for your help! Slowness is not native to W/9x, but they can actually be faster in basic tasks (boot up, launching folders, notepad. etc.) than a new PC with Vista, as my old rig is, with a AMD 650 mhz cpu with 320mb ram. vs a Dell E20 3.06 ghz cpu; 1.4gb ram. But i sure thank God for the new one!

What are the SPECS on your 98 PC?

While you may be able to install 98 on your newer PC, provided the hardware is supported, your 98 OS is "married" to the PC it came with (spec. the mobo) or was first installed on. UNLESS it is a retail version, which would be rare.

You could burn an iso of Knoppix live Cd or PCLinuxOS or SIMILAR and boot from the CD rom on your newer PC and use it to surf for now if you need speed. http://distrowatch.com/

If you OS came preinstalled on you computer, you can get in contact with the manufacture and ask for the recovery disks...

Well, unless you got HP or compaq, you got the on computer recovery program already with your computer so you can try using that (if this applies to you)

I was reading somewhere that if you are "SWITCHING for a new motherboard it does ask for activation and it fails, then call the support number it gives you, tell them it's to replace a faulty M/B, and they will reactivate it for you."

And maybe if you just upgrade your CPU and then call microsoft for REACTIVATION and tell them you are reactivating cuz you were just REPLACING the motherboard it might work....Thanks for the info guys. The only problem is that my warranty expired a month or two ago. I contacted microsoft and they told me to talk with the manufacturer. So I did, only to find out I was going to have to pay $30 for 15 minutes of support. LOL. I said no thanks, I could get the same info ELSEWHERE for free.Quote from: jlsdust on April 19, 2008, 07:02:12 PM

Do you think I can STILL get this disk with my warranty being expired? I cant really take any chances or try to get lucky on this because my girlfriend uses this PC to take online classes. I cant afford for this machine to have any down time.

Solve : Question about cpu?

Answer»

Hello
I was looking to get a dual core PROCESSER (Dual core 3800) but i'm not sure if i would just be wasting my money or not. Let me explain, i play alot of games like flight sims, first person shooters, ect. My graphics card is a geforce 7800 GT, 254 MB, but, im not sure if my single core Amd64 3500 is holding THINGS BACK. What i am SAYING is will i see alot of difference if i purchase the dual core, and if so what can i hope to see.

Geforce 7800 GT
2 gig memory
cpu Amd64 3800
Motherboard MSI diamond pciBuying a dual core will give you a big boost in normal applications, especially when multitasking, but not much on games as many aren't optimized for dual core CPUs yet.
The X2 3800+ is actually slower than your current Athlon 3500+, so your gaming performance will decrease.
What's your budget?

Solve : DVD-CDRW problem?

Answer»

My DVD-CDRW device works perfect, but only if I open the disk IMMEDIATELY. If I PUT a disk in the device and try to open it after couple of MINUTES it stops responding (hangs). I should eject and close the DVD-CDRW to recognize the disk again. The same thing happens when I pause and try to resume a movie after couple of minutes – the disk hangs again. The device is Matsushita (Matshita Panasonic) UJDA720 with WIN XP Pro SP2. I have tried to update the driver, but the only ONE that I found in internet (uniDRV_1_12_1) doesn’t solve the problem.
Any ideas?

You may have answered your own question or still not given enough information. At this point we don't know which.

*Why would i still be asking for help, if i had already solved the problem and didnt need it?

I am assuming that since this is an expansion pack that you already have the full legal copy of the game installed? Again, we just don't know.
*Yes I have a full LEGAL copy of both the original and expansion installed, now u know.

I uninstalled and reinstalled it and it worked fine until a little while ago, then it started to not work again. I would rather not have to uninsatll and reinstall it over and over if there is a real solution to this. Idk, maybe a faulty disk b/c when I put in other games it works. If u need more info about my problem plz ask.

Ps. Be detailed, I'm an idiot.

* Seriously now, As I said in my original post, i just need help. You did not add one thing positive or useful, and you did not or have not attempted to help me. In your reply I did not see one iota of helpful advice. You just critisized me, (that seems to be all you are capable of). You seem to have spent more time trying to FIND what info I did not have as opposed to what info I actually did have. All i would like is an answer.

PS. Just try to be positive. Try that CD in another machine...if it does not work it's the CD...
Try the CD player itself in another machine...if it does the same thing it is the CD player...

Solve : COD4 - Will my cpu run it well??

Answer»

I just got this new cpu and wondering if COD4 will run smoothly on it.

Specs: (off of dxdiag)

ACER ASPIRE M5640
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2160 @1.8GHz (2 CPUs), ~1.8GHz
Memory: 2814MB RAM
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7100 / NVIDIA nForce 630i
Direct x10

Will this run cod4 well on my COMPUTER?

Also, why does it say theres 2 graphics cards?first thing to clear up...

THIS (click here) is a CPU.

and THIS (click here) is a computer.

it might run CoD4. if it does, it will have to be on its lowest graphics settings. your CPU is fairly slow, i recommend at least a 2.4GHz, and your video card is integrated which will kill your performance. i suggest a PCI-E video card.COD minimum and recommended specs:

Quote

Operating Systems:

Recommended requirements:
CPU: 2.4 GHz Dual Core or better
RAM: 1GB for XP and 2GB for Vista
HD: 8GB Free Space
GFX: 3.0 Shader Support, Nvidia Geforce 7800, ATI Radeon X1800 or better.

Minimum requirements:
CPU: Intel® Pentium® 4 2.4 GHz, AMD® Athlon™ 64 2800+ processor
or any 1.8Ghz Dual Core Processor or better.
RAM: 512MB RAM (768MB for Windows Vista)
HD: 8GB Free SPace
GFX: NVIDIA® Geforce™ 6600, ATI® Radeon® 9800Pro or better

And one thing, the 7100 Geforce card is a low end 7 series card and like homer said it's integrated graphics card so it's eating memory from your memory STICKS to boost graphics memory and that is not good for gaming.

And I suppose that your CPU can probably run the game since it's a relatively modern CPU and it beats out the pentium 4 as stated in the min requirements but I don't know how smooth it'll be.

I would buy at least a geforce 8500gt if you want dx10 graphics card at very cheap and the geforce 8500, I my EXPERIENCE with it, can run games at highest graphical settings provided that you are ok with running the games at lowest resolution. The geforce 8500 is not the best card but is way better than the geforce 7100.Quote from: xhairs on April 24, 2008, 07:49:28 PM
Also, why does it say theres 2 graphics cards?

The 7100 is the graphics card, and the nforce 630i is your motherboard.Quote

actually the 630i is the chipset, not the motherboard.

Solve : New Rig?

Answer»

I built my own system a couple of years ago and now it's time to upgrade in prep for Vista. I understand that there are only two systems on the market - the experimental and the obsolete but I would like to build a system that will be good enough performance-wise for the next 2-3 years.
Question:
(1) What specs would I look for in a motherboard?
(2) Is Dual-core worth the money?
(3) I've got good service from my MD processor. Shall I go Intel or AMD?
(4) What do you of the Western Digital 10K RPM, 16M Buffer SATA HD?
(5) Would it be a prudent move to keep the OS in a separate HD from the rest of the installed or downloaded programs?

ThanksWhy bother ? Stay with XP*. As for the other stuff, go to Gates website and "read" windows vista requirements or take all those questions and go to ask.com and have a ball. Thats a long list for quick computer help* Also, what's your budget for this new rig?
We can't advise you if we don't have enough INFO to work with.
Also, what are your current specs?
You may not need to upgrade EVERYTHING for Vista.
As honvetops said though, think about whether you really want it, or whether you want to use XP or 2K instead.I thought that those were pretty mundane type questions. I simply wanted some OPINIONS. Presently I have an Asustek A7N8X2 deluxe, Busclock 133MHz, 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon XP, 1.5 Gig RAM, NVIDIA 6800GT video and sufficient HDs and of course WinXP HomeEd.

I'm a flight simmer and when loaded the MS FSX, I couldn't achieve the performance expected of the software. I tried all the tweaking and listened to the advice of many but no joy. I cannot upgrade my video to a PCIE because my mobo has only AGP slots.

I priced out an Asus M2 Crosshair mobo with lots of available slots and an FSB of up to 800. It supports the AM2 Athlon 64. I have enough to get the necessary case (500W PSU). 1 G RAM to start and Nvidia 9600GT 256M video. I don't have to have Vista now. I have the license for the WINxp but I don't know if I can load it in the new PC without problem with activation.Below is the most comprehensive instructions for swapping out your MBoard without re-installing XP...
I suggest printing it out and reading it completely prior to the new build.

Its good news, I got my comp checked recently and the guy who fixed it showed me a box which he removed from the computer case and replaced it with another.
He said that it was what SUPPLIED power to the whole thing.
In short my power supply had gone dead.

Thanks for help all of you.
Very nice!

Good that he explained what he did.

Replacing a power supply is not terribly difficult, but it's one of those things that ought be done properly! The nice thing about having someone do it for you is that you probably have a warranty period in case anything goes wrong.

Nice to see you back!i thought it had something to do with the PWR supply .Good it got fixed. I hate seeing a pc go that can possible be fixed or used else where. Happy using.

Solve : CPU overheating?

Hi,

I'm getting an error message from my intel hardware monitoring program that came with my board, saying that my processor temperature is 'out of zone'.

It's showing as being over 75 degrees celcius & my CPU fan is running at an avr rate of 2880 RPM.

Is there a problem with my fan?

CheersIs it that hot when it's idle or when you're doing stuff on your computer? If you're doing stuff like playing a game or watching a movie, I wouldn't be too concerned.Hello Michael,

Well it started a couple of days ago & as it hasn't happened before, I'm quite concerned.

It started happening while I was using GIMP & today it's been happening while I was trying to send an email with a large file attachment (can't understand how sending an email can OVERHEAT the processor?).

In the end I had to cancel the email at 20% & turn the PC off as it's temperature kept rising...

I've attached an image of the hardware monitoring program as it is now. You can see that the fan speed is really low in comparison to the guage maximum.

I'll TRY & send the email again then capture an image when it rises again...

Thanks for your advice

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]GIMP could cause the temp to rise a bit too. Especially if you're playing with filters and such.8000RPM is actually QUITE fast for a fan to be spinning, it may just be a generic number that they chose to use. your fan may not EVEN be capable of achieving 8000RPM.

i would make sure the heatsink and fan is free of dust.Yes, 8000 does sound high, but mine is spinning between 2500-2900 - is this too low?Quote from: neljan on April 25, 2008, 08:25:00 PM

that sounds normal. did you clean your heatsink yet?phew, relief!

No I haven't cleaned it yet, I just woke up & had to do a few things like scratch certain areas of my anatomy (that SORT of thing).

But I'll do it today, I've never done it before but I got some of that pressurized air in a can what-do-yu-call-it stuff last week so I take it I can use that?

you certainly can use that. if you have a compressor, you can set it to about 20PSI and use that too. Thanks Homer/Michael, I'll let you know how I get on...your welcome, just remember to hold the fan while you use the compressed air. the fan can act as a generator and send voltage back to the motherboard when it spins.

I have pc P4S800 MX , due to problem with cpu and motherboard I like to replace my cpu and mothered.

Could any one suggest few motherboards and cpu, so I can USE with my all existing components.

Existing components are,

Advance 230 volt power supply, 20 pin and 4 pin CONNECTORS to motherboard
DDR 333 (2.5) 516 MB*16 ram (one stick),

form factor micro atx

24.4*24.4

thank you for helpI WOULD just replace what you have, especially if you have Windows installed and don't want the hassle of calling MICROSOFT. And with the power supply and ram you have, you are kind of limited as to what you can do. Since RAM is so cheap right now (~$25 for 1gb) I would recommend getting new ram too.
I recommend anything made by Intel or ASUS
Here's a quick setup for around $250:
motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121035

I've only run into this problem with Vista. I've not seen this happen with XP. The only thing I found with XP was having to reinstall it after changing the motherboard.Maybe I am unlucky I have had problems twice when trying to upgrade. Solve : Internal HDD used as External HDD??

Answer»

Dear Forum,

I have a HDD that I removed when installing a new one, and would like to use it again as an EXTERNAL HDD. Is this possible? It is a Maxtor 80GB SATA, and I have a Dell Dimension 4700 P4. If I remember correctly, there are extra cable ASSEMBLIES inside. Do I simply buy an extender cable, and plug it in? Are there cables made for this? How would I access the HDD after hooking it up?

Thanks ALOT!

Best regards,
Mike

Yes there are several kits you can buy that will convert your internal HD to an external HD. Instructions are usually included with the kit. You can try radio shack or serveral online retailers for these conversion kits.
Like here: http://www.shopzilla.com/6L--Tower_Drive_Cases_-_cat_id--466__start--201Hi,

Me again. I just looked inside, and there is a second frame under the HDD that looks like it would mount a second HDD. Is this the way to go? There are two cables on the one installed. A multi-conductor wide one, and a small one. It looks like there are extra wide ones, but not another small one. Do I buy a jumper for the small one?

Thanks again!
MikeWell it would depend on if you want to use the old HD for extra storage on this machine or if you would like to make it a portable HD that you can carry around with you. Do you need a lot of storage space on that computer,or would you rather be able to carry your data around with you for EASY acces on other peoples computers? Thanks for your reply, JJ! I was just looking at the enclosures.

I think mounting it inside would be preferred. I can use a memory stick for transferring data. Do you know if there are usually cables installed already for this?

Regards,
MikeMost IDE cables have 2 plugs on them for drives. If the one you have doesn't have 2, you can buy one for a few bucks. No.
it did say it would take alot of patience and research. It WILL be cheaper to just buy a standalone CD player. (much cheaper). And is there something I am doing wrong? Why is everyone saying 'NO' without explanation. agreed, it is unpractical. but there is a way.Who MADE that up?there's a way to doing that, but your CD drive must have line out jack, then you can connect the CD drive to a PSU, connect speaker to line out jack, put in audio cd, press the play BUTTON. but one issue is ATX PSU may not suitable. i'm not sure it'll working, but it sure won't work in your car. you need ELECTRONIC shock resistant.

Solve : psii vs ps2.2??

Answer»

this might seem like a dumb topic but I cant seem to find the information im LOOKING for anywhere. I need to get a new powersupply and want to know the difference between psii and ps2.2 RATED power supplies. I think both supplies are minus the rocker switch on the back for on/off functions. ANYWAY, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance. What MBoard and machine are you getting this PSU for ? ?Im not 100% sure what mobo I am going with yet. I was looking at building a HTPC using this case

http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/product/Chassis/desktop/mozart/vc4001sns.asp

In the spec it says it supports only psii power supplies but the power supplies I would like to use are all ps2.2 and im not sure if they are compaitable or not.I would settle on what MBoard and COMPONENTS are going in to this build FIRST and then choose an appropiate PSU...

Solve : Phone keeps ringing after ISP connects?

Answer»

Hello Forum: Dell Dimension 24-Windows XP SP2-IE6.0 Modem is Intel537EPV9xDFCPI. When my dialup ISP(NetZero) connects to the web the phone begins to ring continuously. No pauses. Just a LONG non-stop ring. I have not changed anything. Began about a week ago. I have to disconnect the DC power supply which powers the SPEAKER phone to stop the ringing. My incoming VERIZON phone line goes to the computer then to the answering machine and then to the phone. Is this a modem problem? I get online with no problem and do not experience any disconnects. Any help would be appreciated. THANKS I would try putting the answering machine and phone on another line.Another option might be splitter. Plug the splitter into your wall phone jack and then your can connect your telephone to one of the two jacks on the splitter instead of connecting it to the computer. This would indicate an AC feedback into the phone. Since modems have a "bridge lifter" built into them, whatever is connected to phone side is taken out of the circuit. You can check this by verifying that there is no dial tone present on the phone. AC feedback must have a path to ground to cause the phone to ring continuously. The only path it has is through the speaker phone power suppy, unless the modems bridge lifter is defective. Most modern phones are equiped with polarity guards. Sometimes, but not ALWAYS, a simple line reversal will correct the problem. You should try replacing the phone and/or the power supply if reversing the line does not solve the problem.2k_dummy, what, exactly, do you mean by "line reversal"?The phone line. Open the phone jack and reverse the red and green wires. (Based on standard installation in US)

Solve : Serial ATA being recognized as IDE HDD?

Answer»

Hi. I have a Samsung R60 + laptop, unmodified. It came with a 160gb S-ATA HDD, but it would appear that the laptop is only recognising it as a IDE HDD. This hasn't been a problem so far, but i have just tried to install iATKOS, which requires a S-ATA HDD and it cannot see the partition the i have created for it at all.
i looked into my bios to see if i could find any info, and i looked at the boot sequence, and i have:
1 - IDE CD/DVD
2 - IDE HDD
etc
etc.
Now, ive taken off the bottom panel and looked at the HDD and it clearly states that it is a S-ATA drive and the connections back that up.
This is REALLY doing my head in now. All help will be appreciated. If you need anymore information on the laptop, i will TRY to find out as much as i can.
Thank you,
Luke

ps.
here is a picture of my HDD - if it's any help...
look in your BIOS again, there should be an option somewhere along the lines of "recognize SATA HD's as IDE".heh. i looked in my bios and had no such luck, so i went to restart and 'Bootmgr' is missing. for some reason THERES no repair button on my INSTALLATION, so im on with reinstalling windows... buggerThis is still puzzling as the bootmgr has nothing to do with how it recognises a hard drive installed in the system.the bootmgr was a new symptom, but thats resolved now. still the burning issue of the IDE/S-ATA confusion. i read somewhere else that there is a thing called 'IDE emulation' that manufacturers are incorporation these days. any thoughts on the matter? There is no hash in SATA...S-ATA is redundant.
IDE emulation would depend on how old this system is...wow. nearly forgot all about this.
has anyone heard of any SOLUTIONS for such a problem?

thanks,

Solve : can you cause motherboard failure by inserting unknown cards into a P-4??

Answer»

To Whom It May Concern:
I've recently purchased a used Pentium-4 D845GRG computer and everything seemed to work
when first turned it on. Then has I started to check my HD it was not wiped of it previous
owners stuffs and asking for password to enter WinXP. I have s software program that
can remove and clean-up any HD, so I wiped the HD. The P-4 has its own board components
but I DECIDED to add a video card, sound card, LANS card, etc. Then I turned on computer
and nothing happened! Why? Was the cards I inserted not compatible? Did I ruin the P-4?
Please help me!
Thanks,
juniorajp2A number of issues could cause it not to boot...

If you are UNSURE as to if the components added were good or bad, that adds to the difficulty of troubleshooting since any one card could have been blown and CAUSED a Short on the BUS.

Likely cause of no power up would be power supply issue. I'd swap the power supply out, remove all the added cards and see if you can get it to turn back on with no issues. Then if you are unsure as to if the cards are good or bad, I'd toss them and buy known good components.

Video card upgrades also demand a heavier load than a basic computer, so be sure your power supply is at least 350 watts before ADDING extra video. You could run a lower end better video card on as little as a 180 watt supply, but you would overwork that supply and burn it out in no time.

I'd start with removing what was added and see it it will boot, then swap out power supplies and see if it will boot... If still no boot, make sure that the ATX power CONNECTOR is pluged in correctly.

Please reply back with findings so we can help further!

Dave

Solve : freeze on startup?

Answer»

Thanks in advance for your help

I was looking to add more ram or faster processor to son's computer. Opened it up to see what kind he had. Did not have any faster processor or compatible ram so NOTHING was added. When he put it back together and booted, error message said TECHNICAL problem, must shut down system to prevent any damage to your computer. When he shut it down and restarted, it now stops at the Dell screen. The keyboard works only momentarily then stops. Opened it up and RECHECK and reseated ram and processor. Still stuck on Dell screen. Can get into CMOS but then keyboard freezes and will not continue. What have I DONE :-?This sounds like the CPU is overheating. Dells are horrible in this way: The heatsink tends to draw in a lot of dust. Opening the case and fiddling around could have knocked some dust in the air, only to be sucked in by the fan. Try this: Open the case back up. Compressed air is recommended, otherwise you'll need to use your own lungs for this. Blow/blast as much dust from all the FANS inside as possible, especially the one above the processor, and reboot. Thank You, Thank You, I love any easy fix. You're welcome.

Solve : Installing SATA hard drive into IDE computer?

Answer»

I wanted to replace my 10 GB hard drive with something bigger and following a friend's advice, I purchased a 160GB hard drive which I found out later was a SATA and I have IDE connections. I contacted TigerDirect and they sent me the card and cables to CONNECT the device. I followed the FAQ and found the drive as unallocated. How do I get this drive up and working and then use it as my primary drive (I have the XP Professional disk)? I am a novice computer tech and need some assistance in this area.

Thanks in advance.

AllenFirst you will need the driver disk (or CD). Then boot the machine with the XP CD in the drive and have that disk handy and press F6 when asked and insert it.Okay, I put the XP CD disk n and booted the machine. I pressed the F6 prompt when asked and the "s" but the computer is LOOKING for the a drive and ignoring thne cd driver with the driver cd. What do I need to do now?o you have an A drive? Can you copythe file to it? Can you not redirect the search if not?How do you redirect the search? Do I need to change my bios? I will try to copy the disk to a floppy but it may not fit.I was able to locate the files on a floppy disk and re-booted the machine and pressed f6 and the computer stated that it saw the driver. But the XP program contined and I cannot TELL if the SATA drive is there and what to do next. I did not get any indication from the system that it detected the drive. You won't get an acknowledgement...setup will just continue.
You'll know in about 22 minutes if it worked when it BOOTS into a brand new install of XP on your brand new SATA drive.

Good Luck.I checkec hardware installed on the control panel and I see 2 things:ST310212A and ST316081 2AS SCSI Disk Device. I take it that the second item above is the device. How do I know that the XP is loaded on this drive and how do I make this my primary drive and start to use it instead of the 10 GB? I went into Disk Management and it shows on the TOP C: drive 9.53GB and on the bottom two disks:
Disk 0 (C:) 9.53GB
Disk 1 149.05GB unallocatedPer the information on my previous post, it appears that I have another drive on my computer. How do I get this up and make it my primary drive? Thanks for the help so far.

Solve : Sata2 compatibility with Mobo?

Answer»

I'm building a new computer and CONSIDERING the ASUS P5B-E. How do I know if it's Sata2 compatible? Should I spend the extra money on Sata2? I mostly back up movies and use the computer as a HTPC.timrob ....Go to the Asus site and lookup that board and it will tell you what it supports.

dl65 I already did, it just SAYS Sata, http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=307&model=1347&modelmenu=2. I didn't know if you could plug a Sata2 into a Sata connection, or if it's a whole different SPECIFICATION and mobo.SATA2 is backwards compatible with SATA.
But it won't work at full SATA2 speed, only at SATA speed.
Not a problem, as HDDs today don't use the full bandwidth available anyway.
Here is an ARTICLE on the SATA interface, it may help you out.Thanks. I have to make Wikipedia part of my normal quest. Unless the price is the same, I think I'll skip going to Sata2.

Would you really hot swap a Sata drive? I've swapped USB harddrives, but always clicking first on the ICON in the corner.I've never swapped a drive without using the safely remove hardware icon, I've seen a lot of drives die when this isn't used.
As for internal drives, I don't know if it's possible or advisable.
If it was my PC, I'd shut it down before swapping an internal drive, just to be on the safe side.
Is that what you were asking?
Or did I misread it?You did. Thanks for your help again.Quote

To see if there is a sound card installed open the case...
*censored*, do I really have to do that? That is a major undertaking, is there any other way of finding out?On most cases that is removing three screws at most.

You can also look on the back of the case and see if there are sound ports in an expansion card slot as well as some from the motherboard itself (and therefore not in a slot).Does the fact that her sound used to work mean SOMETHING?
I NEED to know this.....Yes.Quote

Besides the fan in the power supply and the CPU fan, how many fans do you have installed in your computer? Where are they? Which direction are they moving air?

Did you make any hardware changes (excluding the power supply) before this started happening? Add a video card or other new components? Have you ever removed the CPU fan and heatsink?

Do have any way now of getting temperature readings for the CPU? If not, I suggest you download SpeedFan and install it and see what info it will produce for that computer.

Yes it still starts up and runs and randomly shutsdown, PSU fan is the only fan no room for anymore, hadn't made any hardware changes besides PSU, I already have speed fan and the only info it gives me is some basic HDD and memory info.

Solve : hard drive question--wiping clean?

Answer»

I just BUILT a new PC and it's running like a champ.. I have a 500 gig hard DRIVE in there now.

For my old pc I have a 120 gig hard drive that I would like to place in my new computer just for that extra bit of space. Obviously my old HD has windows installed as well as all my old stuff. I am in the process of tranfering all my important files now to my external HD. How do I wipe this old HD as such so I can just pull it out and place in my new computer as if it were a new HD. Thanks in advance.Use your OS cd to partition/format the old hdd then jumper it as a slave and move it to the new pc.

Hard to get down to detail as you don't SAY what OS you are dealing with or what drive types your old/new MOBO can accept.

Good luck ahh my bad.. using XP and it's a sata HD.

so I basically turn on old PC.. insert xp CD and format the drive.. then put the jumper as slave and voila? Sounds simple enough. now to try it out tom thanks.hrmm ok.. something isnt working right I got the drive in my new computer, yet it isnt showing up for me. I can see it when I go into the BIOS but nothing in "my computer".

I prob did something WRONG.. with my old computer, I deleted the partition using the xp cd. I do have the old HD set into the slave SATA slot (verified via mobo manual). I also made sure it was set as secondary in the bios as well (secondary to my primary HD). Thoughts? Thanks in advance.Quote

you saying that you deleted the partition , but did you create new partition for it?
on the deskop, right click [my computer], then click [manage] on the left columm, select [computer management-->storage-->disk management], if you can see your HD in bios, then you should see it in here. if you didn't create partition for this HD yet, right click on the HD on right columm, you will see an option to create partition, after created partition, format it.
good luck
