Solve : What exactly does disk check do?? |
Answer» I was wondering what exactly disk check does and how it helps the computer. I would also like too know what triggers these cause I have had more than an few on the time with my computer. Also if you get them will the harm you computer in any way? I was wondering what exactly disk check does and how it helps the computer.Basically, it checks the disk for errors and repairs them, if it can. Quote from: 18carNASCAR on July 12, 2011, 04:29:40 AM I would also like too know what triggers these cause I have had more than an few on the time with my computer.Hard drives aren't perfect and will not last for ever. DUST can get in and DAMAGE a sector. Smoking around your PC will increase this risk. High humidity will not help. Heavy machinery can affect hard drives. Quote from: 18carNASCAR on July 12, 2011, 04:29:40 AM Also if you get them will the harm you computer in any way?If the damage is done to a sector where inforamtion is stored, there may be a problem. Having a good back-up strategy is paramount. Read here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/187941Thank you for the information. I back up all important and personal files on a USB flashdrive. So I think that I am ok with the backup plan. But I never run my computer while smoking (cause I dont smoke) and rarely ever in high humidity cause I mainly run it in a air conditioned houseQuote from: reddevilggg on July 12, 2011, 05:21:27 AM Dust can get in and damage a sector. Smoking around your PC will increase this risk. High humidity will not help.the only way either dust or smoke particles will increase the risk of HD FAILURE would be if the dust filter covering the "breathing" hole of the drive is damaged. In which case the drive is PRETTY much screwed anyway. Dust and smoke will decrease the effectiveness of case fans if not taken care of, which can increase the overall temperature and failure rate of everything, though. |

Solve : sata help? |
Answer» I know SATA 3. is 300 MBps and that is also 3,000 Mbps The original SATA was about the same as the PATA for actual transfer speeds. But there are other factors that could influence transfer speed. The transfer rate was about 1.5 Mbps for either interface.Edit. that article says: Quote ...when COMPARED to IDE (133MB/s theoretical max vs. SATA II's 3Gbit/s)...Which I believe is confusing to most users. Why mix Mega Byte and Gigabit in the same sentence? |

Solve : Can supergule be used to hold 2 bits of connector together ?? |
Answer» I have a Sony Z1VA that I sent to a repair shop to REPLACE the hard drive. In the process, the shop damaged the ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard and the connector now is not holdings together. 1. Superglue is a good electrical insulator so putting drops of it in the connector's holes will make things worse. Thanks for your reply. If superglue is not the answer, is there an alternative home use glue ? Between your suggested (2) and (3) option, if superglue can be used even when it can't be taken apart in future, surely it is better than your suggested option (3) ? Why throw away something that is still completely useable ? It is so wasteful and deplete natural resources, isn't it ? I'd prefer if there is an alternative glue suggestion that can be used at home. I believe i see a trend developing with your posts. You ask us some questions we give what we believe is an answer that will best meet your needs (often including why you should NOT do something) then back you come trying to get a change of mind. This happened with your hard-drive removal issue on perhaps the same computer. Members (including myself) and other sources warned you against trying to "prise" off plastic parts on the HDD. Still you had to do it and the proposed result that it would cause damage was exactly what occurred in that case. Now let me be the 1st to say you are totally at liberty to do ANYTHING you want when it comes to trying to deal with your computer issues(including doing things we urge you NOT to do). But i have to wonder why you bother to come to us with your questions when ultimately you will go ahead with things that you were warned about that will defeat what should be in your own best interest. I would be very interested to hear your explanation for that phenomenon? truenorhtYou have nothing to lose by trying, but if you are anxious to conserve resources you do not have to throw away the whole laptop; you can just replace the keyboard. Anyhow, can't you send it for recycling? Quote from: truenorth on July 02, 2011, 07:53:32 AM I believe i see a trend developing with your posts. I apologise for the delay in replying as I was not aware I have replies here after having checked this site a few times following my last post. For some reasons, the mail notification didn't work even though I have ticked the box for notification. Firstly, let me just say this is a different laptop from the one that have a hard disk problem. I did not realised that I am not able to express my opnion or to ask further questions or put forward my alternative suggestions for considerations after having received suggestions. From what you siad, it seems that the suggestions or advise put forward is final and is without further negotiation !!! You said that "....warned you against trying to "prise" off plastic parts on the HDD. Still you had to do it ...." Did I MISSED something somewhere as I can't find where did this happen ?? Such assumptions is where you ended up with this mesage to me which is uncalled for since eveyone have the right to come back with further comments or like you, if they find I am difficult, to ignore me !! I always take other's comments into consideration, but I also form my own opnion after having received other's comments. Then I put forward my alternative that I think is workable to my situation. After aall, who knows my personal situation better than myself, eg in terms of finance, mobility, including my personal attachement or not, to a certain laptop. But rest assured, I do take advise and comments given here seriously and if I am advise against a course of action, I will certainly follow it. But I do feel that having received the facts and information here, I have the right to return with alternative suggestions for further comments and advise unless of course, the suggestions I received shys away from the actual problem. If this is not how this site work, then this site is not for me and I'd be more than happy to be removed from it.Quote from: Salmon Trout on July 02, 2011, 07:54:22 AM You have nothing to lose by trying, but if you are anxious to conserve resources you do not have to throw away the whole laptop; you can just replace the keyboard. Anyhow, can't you send it for recycling? The problem is that I am not sure if the faulty connector is the keyboard END or the motherboard end. This is because I didn't do this myself, but I saw the repair shop tring to hold these 2 ends together to get the keyboard to work. So the keyboard itself is not faulty. It would be ideal if anyone knows of an alternative glue that work. Someone suggested hotglue, but I found out that this is sold in quantity rather than for minute usage and a hot glue gun is also needed. For your info, this is on a dead hard drive and AFTER knowing how a SATA and a IDE drive looks. I did this out of curiousty. So no harm to the laptop. I thought you were referring to this action where I didn't know what I was doing and made the problem in hand worse Everyone's circumstances are affected by many factors when it comes to making decisions and of course it ALWAYS remains the prerogative of the individual to do "their own thing". You are right when you mention in your last post my reference to the "prising" of plastic HDD connections and to my concerns as to the potential detrimental consequences of such an effort. Therefore it was frustrating to see that you were possibly (what i believed again) about to embark on another potentially disadvantageous endeavor. My own BELIEF is that when dealing with many of the conundrums of life there can be great advantage to receiving advice and suggestions from many sources to either develop a consensus or to see of the more than one way to do something. I do NOT profess to a propitiatory ownership of ALL facts and truths but as i believe to be the case with the vast majority of CH members we try our best and it can be very frustrating when things go wrong by doing things that were warned against. I am sure i speak for the general belief of the CH membership when we welcome your participation both as a receiver and provider of assistance here on the forums. Then one will never forget it. As for the plastic bit, I did it knowing there is a great possibility I will mess up the hard disk, but only becuase it is a dead disk and I know that the replacement will come with the plastic on it after having found out that it is a SATA disk. Perhaps I did not make this clear in my post, but then you should not have assume also, especially after all, I did state a different model between this laptop and the other one. If I am like many of my friends and colleagues who are afraid to try a new programs or something new in case it messed up their pcs. that's how they don't learn. I've learnt everything I know (or the little I know about pcs) from trying and error. At least now, I can reinstall a Win 98 on a old pc who runs that o/s which is more complicated than reinstalling a XP. In any case, getting back to the issue on hand, I'd still like to find out if there is a made for home use glue that can be use safely on the connectors. Quote In any case, getting back to the issue on hand, I'd still like to find out if there is a made for home use glue that can be use safely on the connectors. Safely? Yes. Pretty much any glue. Whether it will work is another question altogether that nobody here can answer with any amount of certainty. You may very well make things worse.Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 12, 2011, 02:22:33 PM Safely? Yes. Pretty much any glue. OK, thanks. I was hoping someone knows of a similar glue to hot glue as I've been told by a user of this product who have been using it over the years on his computing repair that this is ideal. But this is leaning towards the commercial scale usage instead of home since I only need a few drops of it. |

Solve : !!!Floppy drive problem (pleaze help)!!!? |
Answer» hello everybody..my floppy drive (A:) does not show up in my computer anymore...I bought the drive from a comp store and they installed it. I had it working and then one day it stopped showing up there. IVE TRIED EVERYTHING...checked BIOS, and it says its enabled. I downloaded tweakUI(cuz someone told me that WOULD work) it didnt. Device manager says its "working properly". the light on my floppy drive still turns on when i restart the computer. Is there anything i left out? I was thinking it had something to do with my windows xp automatic updates and MAYBE it messed with the drivers, but no the drivers are up to date...this is a very FRUSTRATING problem guys. ive looked on this forum to see if someone had the same problem as me but didnt find anything. my pc is a HP pavillion a884n (if u need that info)..any help would be GREATLY appreciated..thanksTo make sure the drive is still working, put drive a: at the top of the boot order in bios and insert a bootable floppy. Then REBOOT. Does the system see the drive at boot?yes i have already made sure the drive works.Well what exactly happens when you insert a floppy disc? Does Windows Explorer show an a: drive?Quote my floppy drive (A:) does not show up in my computer anymore...The cable came loose. - OR - The drive has gone bad. The floppy drive cabl has to be fully seated, just a small sixteenth of an inch can make the difference. He said the system sees the drive at boot.it does see the drive in boot, however i do not have any bootable disks. all of my floppy disks have drum sounds on them. i use those disks to load the sounds to my drum machine/sampler which also has a floppy drive. everything is connected properly, i dont know what to do anymore lol. i tried to boot one of my sound disks just to see if it would show the sounds on the disk. but it says this is not a bootable disk. duh.lolLet's go back to before you lied to me. Get a bootable floppy and see if the system sees it at boot. And even if it is not bootable, if the floppy is at the top of the boot order and there is a disk in the drive, the system should not boot.Knock it of, Allen. You don't call somebody a liar just because he did not understand you.He understood perfectly. If I'm taking the time to help someone the very least I expect is an honest response.DLoad a boot disk from bootdisk.com...WinME is fine... Extract the file to a clean floppy and test as Allan has instructed above...Quote from: patio on November 11, 2009, 04:09:20 PM DLoad a boot disk from bootdisk.com...WinME is fine...Correct me if I'm wrong (it's been so long.......). Even if it's a non-bootable disk and a: is at the top of the boot order, won't he get an "unbootable device" error? |

Solve : Dell Printer is Printing Images in Very Poor Quality? |
Answer» So I have been reading online for some weeks that I should increase the dpi of my images to get better quality upon printing. Trying this multiple times, the quality of the image is still very poor and is just getting worse. It looks great on screen That is what I mean by 'raster', the physical display you see, which is always less detail than the original artwork done for a brochure or paper presentation. Many programs will adjust the a temporary copy of the original to fit the current raster size. This is done when the raster is to be the final destination. So you must specify in your program that as he final target is a paper presentation, which can have about four times as much detail for high-quality printing. JPEG image format is often used because it gives good color depth with moderate size on the hard drive. But it can ruin graphical art work. The GIF is great for artwork, if it is larger enough. For great qualify, the original GIF needs to by a pixel size about 3200 by 2400 and using and advanced color format. The GIF89a standard, will produce an 24-bit RGB true color image.in 256 color. A better choice is to use PNG as the common format for all programs. It can easily be adjusted for quality and disk size, but does not give compression as good as JPEG. If disk space is not an issue, use PNG with a very large pixel size. This is my personal choice. The PSD format is preferred with Photo Shop, but it is hard to get all programs to use it. I once knew how to do that, my I lost that feature on my machine. If it is any help, you may want to read up on image formats on Wikipedia. The trick is to get your programs to use the original image for preparing the virtual image that goes to the printer. Otherwise, the program tries to enlarge the embedded image that was prepared for the display raster that was used previously. The program must prepare a new virtual image in memory based of the original image stored on disk in the large pixel, deep color format. That is why I suggested using a link to the image. There are a number of programs suitable for doing presentations both non the screen and on paper. Sorry, I don't have enough recent experience to direct you to the best solution. I am just giving some notes about the image quality issue. Have you considered using a program from Adobe that integrates Photo editing, graphical design and PDF output in one program? In general, I use MS Word to prepare a brochure and print it on paper. But the images are linked, not embedded. I believe that helps the quality of the paper presentation. If I use JPG, I make sure is s very large and low compression. MS Word can also do PNG, which is a better choice if hard drive space is not an issue. My grimmer and vocabulary are not always as good as it should be. But If I spend a lot of time doing a re write, it would take longer to respond. Hope this is of some help. Interesting. Because when I tried PNGs at 300 dpi, I was getting noticeably worse results than jpg at 100 dpi. I, too, am a believer of PNGs for good image quality (I used to use BMPs, then GIFs, then I converted to JPG-ism now I`m a PNG-ist) so I was surprised as how terrible it was being handled (especially by Adobe, the lord of graphics). By the suggestion of a co-worker, I tried using BMP in PowerPoint and ocnverted to PDF and the results are better than any of the PNG and JPGs! Go FIGURE. I guess BMP still has some uses, lol. It`s not perfect though but it has gotten us closer to what we`re GOING for. However, Photoshop converted straight to PDF has given us the 5-star quality that we`re looking for. But like I said, some things in creating the brochure pages in Photoshop (as previously discussed) is what`s making me want to continue looking for a sure fire solution. Maybe we can use the BMPs in PowerPoint and re-create pages in Photoshop for now until that golden solution comes around. If anything, at least there`s a couple options of a work around in the meantime. At least the quality is excellent (or at least close to it) and that is what I was looking for. Thanks for taking the time to try to help me out with this, sticking with me and showing me those links. Much appreciated! If any new development comes from this situation, I`ll try to remember to come back to this thread and update it in case there`s anyone who stumbles upon this in the future.Glad to see you are making progress. Keep at it and you will find a solution. Here are two pictures of my front porch. Wide view. http://geek9pm.com/porch/details0001.jpg Close up. http://geek9pm.com/porch/details0002.jpg Let me explain. It was NOT done with a close-up lens. Instead, only the Photo Editor I have made the difference. The first photo is the picture scaled down 5 times to be viewable on the raster of your display device. Otherwise it would be too large. The second photo is a copy or the original cropped to be viewable on the display. Notice there still is a lot of detail, even tho it is a JPG. My camera does only JPG, but it allows me to use low compression to preserve detail. Anyway, this is to illustrate what happens when you try to fit an image to the display. Either you loose detail, or you have to crop the image. Image #1 now has been permanent altered so the detail is lost. Only image two has the detaiols nof the flower pot. But it is only a part of originality. If I want the picture will all of its features, I would have to download it again from the camera. And perhaps store the original copy some place where it will not be altered. This is a simple show of what happens when you degenerate pixel size in an image. Make sure you keep a backup of the original. |

Solve : External Hard Drive Issues? |
Answer» I have a 20 GB external hard drive. I added SEVERAL files to it on my laptop. I then unplugged it and hooked it up to my PC. Suddenly it doesn't work. I have GONE into device manager and tried uninstalling and reinstalling, updating the driver, and then throwing it out the window. Sometimes it tells me the device can't start (code 10), the device is working properly, and sometimes it tells me there is no driver. I don't know what else to try and any new suggestions WOULD be greatly appreciated. I have PROBABLY 5,000 files on it and would like to at least save those if nothing else. Thank you in advance.Does it still work with your laptop or is it pretty much dead on all systems? It's not working on the laptop either.Put the external hard drive in the freezer for an hour, then try it again. Be prepared to get all your files off fast. Don't get your hopes up, it probably won't work. |

Solve : reloading XP OS stops when starting Windows up? |
Answer» Have a Seagate SATA drive in a HP laptop that I have WIPED and reformatted. I boot up with an XP system disc which loads all the drivers, etc but when it gets to the point of starting up the Windows (when it asks which partition to load into) it crashes to a blue screen which says there is a problem with the hard drive or a virus. I have tested the hard drive using Seatools + some Hiren testing tools and all say it is good. Have run a Memtest + another memory diagnostic which all came back clear. Any suggestions as to what might be the problem or what I can test next?Is the Seagate HD the original drive came with your laptop? What issues that prompted you to reinstall XP OS? Are you sure you wiped out any pre existing OS and followed on how to delete, create and install XP? it crashes to a blue screen which says there is a problem with the hard drive or a virusPlease post the entire or exact message if possible. This link courtesy of Bleeping computer has a posted topic concerning any possible issue you might have encountered. Please verify if you have or not. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-windows-xp-recoveryHi I am assuming the windows is not the HP recovery Cd's, And the windows is XP. If so you will either need the recovery Cd's or to make a windows XP install disk with the XP support for the hard disk controller. The easiest way is to get a copy of the recovery Cd's. Prior to wiping the computer when it started up it was only getting as far as the Windows XP logo screen at which point it would just keep looping. I did a chkdsk, ran a hard drive repair over the HDD also ran a repair over the MBR as well as running a scan with SuperAntiSpyware (which found some registry issues) and it did eventually open up properly. As we weren't sure what fixed it and wanted to err on the side of caution it was decided to wipe the drive and start again. I used a program from Hiren v.10 but because I had to try a few before I could find one that would even pick up the drive's EXISTENCE I am not sure now which one I used to zero the drive. Reformating it was difficult too until I downloaded Hiren v.14 and used the Seatools which reformatted EASILY. When I put the Windows XP OS disc with SP2 (not a recovery disc) in to load it goes through the initial loading of drivers fine until it gets to the part to 'start up windows' it crashes.I just run the setup again and it didn't crash with a blue screen this time but did come up with the message that 'setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on this computer'. Why is it having issues when all the HDD tests I run come up fine??Very early on in the Setup process a bottom screen prompt will say "Press F6 to install additional drivers"... Do so... Then insert your MBoard driver CD... It will auto-detect and Setup should continue... At some point it may ask for the Windows CD...if not remember to remove the driver CD at the end when setup wants to re-boot...I pressed the F6 and got to the point where it asks for the Manufacturers System disc to be inserted into Drive A. I don't have the system disc but downloaded the necessary drivers from HP and put a copy in the internal CD ROM, tried a disc in the external CD ROM and also tried a copy on a USB key all would not make setup budge from this point. Is it expecting a FLOPPY even though the laptop doesn't have a floppy drive or will it only accept the manufacturer's system disc? It is all original parts in the Notebook. There should be a drop down boxfor selecting the file location...point it to the appropiate spot. Unfortunately the OEM driver cd has a built in installer...many DLoad drivers even from the manuf do not include the installer so it won't auto detect... But try the above method and keep us posted...Quote from: patio on July 13, 2011, 06:40:04 PM There should be a drop down boxfor selecting the file location...point it to the appropiate spot. There isn't. XP only supports Floppy disks at that stage of setup.Or the manuf. Driver CD....she may have to orfer 1.Quote 'setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on this computer'http://techrena.blogspot.com/2008/10/how-to-install-your-own-wndows-xp-in-hp.htmlThank-you, thank-you worked BEAUTIFULLY. Quote from: patio on July 13, 2011, 06:54:16 PM Or the manuf. Driver CD....she may have to orfer 1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314859 Quote Note Mass storage controller drivers can be loaded only from floppy disks by using the F6 key. The F6 key cannot be used to load drivers that are stored on USB flash drives, on USB hard disks, or on other external storage devices. The situation here is that the system uses SATA and XP doesn't support SATA. This will require: 1: slipstreaming the SATA drivers into the XP install disc 2: getting the appropriate drivers on a Floppy disk (and the system will need a floppy drive) 3. setting the SATA "mode" to "disabled" or "compatible" or "IDE"; this is usually the best option as far as time goes. You can then install the SATA drivers from the CD after booting into windows, change the BIOS back, and everything should work fine. |

Solve : Computer automatically restarts? |
Answer» Ok so I built my first computer a couple of months ago and it has been working perfectly fine since then. Now all of a sudden around last week it has been automatically restarting every time I turn it on. It's weird because it goes through a series of quick RESTARTS; first it reaches windows then it happens, then it doesn't even reach the password screen and it restarts again, and finally it doesn't do it for a while at least. Some days it can be left on for hours while I play games even and it doesn't restart, usually after it GETS done with its fit after I first turn it on. |

Solve : scanner question, not sure where this goes...? |

Answer» I have an Epson 3000 scanner. My gray scale scans have a blue cast. I have tried everything. I can not get rid of this in Photoshop elements after scanning. I use scans to SELL. This is a big PROBLEM. Black And White scans ALWAYS look horrible with every scanner I have ever had. That is not an option. I have an Epson 3000 scanner. My gray scale scans have a blue cast. You don't convert the scanned images to grey scale? ("Grey" is not a mistake; it is how we spell it in England.) Most scanner lamps have a slightly blue cast and even colour scans may need a little hue ADJUSTMENT but if you are intending the final product to be a grey scale image you may as well remove all the colours forever. I am guessing that by "black and white" you mean 2 bit mode? The scanner has Gray(grey) scale color black and white. Black and white is a horrible, unusable image Grey scale is fine with many scanners, not this one. Blue is there even when i use the remove color command in Photoshop elements. I need some way to get rid of the blue. i have tried everything. Some scans i can get OK. many I can not. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330588203386 One offending scanthere is no blue in that image. I suspect it might be a setting on your monitor.Quote from: blaumann on July 13, 2011, 01:44:35 PM http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330588203386 I loaded this into PaintShop Pro 9 and used the "count colors" tool. Just as my eyes told me, it is a 256 color (colour) grey scale image. As a very wise man said, Quote there is no blue in that image. Solve : No display or beeps after powering up computer? |
Answer» Last night I was in the middle of playing Counter-strike on my pc and I blue screened. I haven't dusted out my pc in a while so I figured dust may have caused my gfx card to overheat. I opened up my computer and grounded myself, removed my gfx card and dusted it out. After that I noticed my cpu's fan was pretty dusty so I also removed that. I tried getting my fan back in but I was having some issues and disconnected everything from my motherboard and put it back on outside of the case. After I put the cpu fan back on my motherboard I put all of my hardware back in my case, connected everything that I have previously disconnected, and put the cover back on. When I started up my computer I didn't have any display at all or no beeps. I was almost certain I had fried my motherboard but I removed my stick of ram and booted and got a couple beeps. Im not too sure but I think if I get beeps after I remove my ram, my motherboard isn't fried? I haven't dusted out my pc in a while so I figured dust may have caused my gfx card to overheat. Solve : Using compressed air on overheating laptop? |
Answer» My 1-year old vostro 1000 is beginning to show symptoms of overheating (shutting down randomly, and speedfan shows high temps), and so I'm going to give it a good dusting. My question is: how exactly should I GO about this? I'm not sure exactly which vent I should be blowing into... I'm pretty sure the intake vent is on the left side (it is labeled in the user manual as air vent), and it SEEMS the air exits in the rear (but this one is not labeled in the user manual). Then there is the grid of holes on the bottom below the fan... which is which, and which one should I blow into? Also, WOULD it be a good idea to put a paperclip through one of the bottom holes in order to prevent the fan from overspinning? (assuming I should not blow through the bottom)Is this yours? Generally, laptops don't accumulate much dust. The ones i've opened certainly do...I agree mine looked like a hoover bag when I first did it and that was causing it to overheat. Now it works great but as I said because I keep on top of the cleaning.Well, would you recommend first trying to get the dust out without taking it apart, and see if that brings the temp down? And yes, the picture is of my laptop, and I assume (just trying to validate) the exhaust is on the right on the rear, and that I should aim the compressed air through there?Quote from: GelatinGhost on September 28, 2009, 05:54:58 PM Well, would you recommend first trying to get the dust out without taking it apart, and see if that brings the temp down? Unfortuanetly your fan will have backed up a load of dust and cotton etc. Your fan will no longer be able to cool your system I can help as I've said... |

Solve : moisture in compact disc digital audio player? |
Answer» An icy pole was left on top of a compact disc digital audio player. It melted so the sugary liquid ran down through the player. We have disconnected it from the power and intend to leave it for days to dry out naturally before trying it. But we are concerned that the nature of the fluid will cause problems. Is there anything else we can do?I would think it wouldnt be a problem as long as you got it unplugged and all electricity to it stopped because i have had pool water get into a phone MULTIPLE times and it always worked in the end. I would just recomend that you leave it for a good 5 days and in a room that is average room temp not to hot just to make sure. The sugar will probably be the issue as it probably will crystalise...what sugary substance was this ? ?The icy pole was frozen flavored and sweetened water. The outside of the player is sticky to the touch.Clean the outside of the player with Windex and a soft cloth. I might be able to recognize goo. What should I then do? Use a Q-tip and alcohol to clean it up.not to be pedantic but in general it is the contaminants in water, that is, minerals and so forth, that cause the damage; and of COURSE sugar doesn't help it's worth a shot though- some people I know have had success cleaning flash drives for example that were doused with soda pop by using Distilled water- NOT bottled water - and having a GLASSFUL and immersing the entire circuit board of the drive (fairly small) and using a fresh glass and transferring it over every few hours for a day or so, and then letting it dry out for around 3-4 days. All the files and everything were accessible. I was as amazed as anyone. of course this would be a very tricky business given the larger size of the player. We let it dry out naturally as recommended. It is now working!Good News indeed... THANX for letting us know and stop back anytime. |

Answer» Im practically laughing at this now. 1) Why do manufacturers make so many redundant power pins? previously my CPU-z max TDP reading was 60.5 watts, it is 59 now. And I noticed that I am now able to achieve a stable overclock of 235 x14=3.29 GHz with the same voltage. Any Ideas???They don't have redundant power pins. Answer» Alright, excuse my bluntness, but this is really frustrating. If the troubleshooting that you did was accurate, and it sounds like it is then I would say it's a faulty motherboard. There are a lot of benchmark and burnin software suites available, but I don't know if any will actually identify a motherboard as failing. I just just have a HUNCH based on the trouble shooting that you have already done. If you want any links to some burn in software, just ask, I'm sure we all have one we can post for you.Quote from: Image on November 09, 2009, 10:11:01 PM ...So, I chalked it up to an oddity and bought a shiny new PCI Wireless NIC...What you have encountered is not all that uncommon, in my experience. The PCIbus has undergone a number of modifications and upgrades over the years and is supposed to be backward compatible. This makes the assumption that the designers of the motherboard and the add-in cards both follow the standard to the letter. They may or may not do this, but I am not surprised that a newer motherboard will not see a card that could have been designed to an older standard. I have no explanation as to why a working card stopped working.Alright.. I'll try to play with both cards some more, and try to get atleast ONE to work in computer a... otherwise that computer is next to USELESS to me.. I wonder if Ill have the same problem with a PCI E NIC.. |

Solve : Exhaust Fan acting up - unusually low/zero rpm? |
Answer» HI all, I've noticed for a couple of weeks now, my computer's exhaust case fan , (not sure on diameter), has been EXHIBITING strange behaviour. This includes; unusually low RPM (from POST, it goes from 0-30-and so on progressively to 1130, then after much idle work for the system (web browsing and such), falls back to the 700-800 zone), and even now, the fan does not spin at all. I have another 120mm case fan as an intake, running well, HOWEVER it is only this exhaust fan that has been playing up. I used to see 1170 idle speeds, and 2450 rpm top speeds for this fan while heavy loads on the system. As another detail, this fan is also definitely the loudest out of all of the fans in my system, especially at low speeds. My other fans; CPU (running fine at 2228 RPM last time I checked), my Graphics card's fan (idles at 42/50% [950rpm] and maxes at 100% [2570 rpm] although gets stuck at 100% till next reboot) and intake (as mentioned before, yet is not plugged into Motherboard and is Molex powered) are functioning absolutely fine. Is it possible to rectify this issue, or better the system by buying a replacement fan that is much quieter? Thanks in advance. WSR, If indeed it is the fan that is on the way out then the replacement of it is certainly a relatively easy option. They are readily available and can be very inexpensive depending on location of purchase. Retail bricks and mortar stores generally being more expensive than on line stores. My recommendation is with the power off and touching the case with your hand to discharge any static electricity--remove the errant fan and do a web search for the model which will be displayed on it and go from there.truenorthThanks for replying truenorth, I did happen to get the fan working, when I opened up my case, (then grounding myself to the case voltage), and plugged the fan into a DIFFERENT fan header on the motherboard. However I think I still should replace the fan, as it has been in use for LONGER than I can remember... It looks to be either 92/120mm, and the power requirement on the label said it was 0.25 Amps.... I will surely check again the exact name of the model of the fan, so as to follow your advice. Just remove it and bring it to the PC store with you...then you can match it up with a suitable replacement... It's coming out anyway.... |

Solve : Sounds from Internet Sources not Working? |
Answer» I recently had to do battle with a fake antivirus scanner and was able to beat it off my computer. However, right after finally removing the fake program I lost all sounds that came from an internet source. I have gone to google and tried several suggestions from the "No Internet Sound", all to no avail. The other problem, most likely secondary to the first, is that I have lost the Volume Control icon from the system tray at the bottom right of my screen. Coupled with this I am UNABLE to change the volume of the computer through my keyboard (Fn + PgUp/PgDn), so that if I want to change the volume I have to manually go through the start menu to find the volume control program. |

However, you must lengthen the power cables. I have modified several of my APC's in such a manner. Replacing the regular batteries inside your UPS with external deep cycle batteries can increase your run time tremendously. Depending on the UPS model you can have a decent run time to shut down your equipment. However, if you're looking for a ridiculously long run time you'll need to replace the battery with an external. I bought a Smart UPS 1500 without the battery and installed 2x 12v 75ah marine deep cycle batteries. My system runs for days now. It's quite easy to do and if you do a bit of research locally you can actually pick up the UPSs pretty CHEAP. A lot of times people have them with bad batteries and they're trying to get rid of them. Even a UPS like the Smart UPS 1400 would work great. The bigger the UPS the more load you can place on it. Both the 1500 and the 1400 have 950W, so most applications are pretty good with that. If you're thinking of using car batteries make sure you don't store them in doors. There is a whole bunch of safety stuff with those batteries as they're pretty dangerous. I can tell you though, in NEW model test/development, we fought these issues with the designers all the time. My focus (and current job) is in Power (generation, transmission) though, not so much CompE, so I do appreciate the help! This shows the bottom of your computer: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/994660200_VGNAWseries_HDD_CRU.pdf This model is similar: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/disassemble-sony-vaio-vgn-fw170j-series-laptop/ Here's the battery: Why use a PROPRIETARY battery when they can use this: Some models have an access door on the bottom (should be all models). BTW, I was a controls engineer, from computers to switchgear, design, fab, test, troubleshoot, repair. |

Solve : How to reinstall rootsystem hal.dll and save files/administrator question? |
Answer» This post is strange, but true and your help WOULD be very appreciated. I purchased my computer from my former boss. The computer belonged to her daughter, so she had administrator control and was networked. I had thought that I had changed all the PASSWORDS, but obviously not as she hacked my computer. While trying to regain control I ended up with a rootsystem hal.dll message. These are my questions. ...1--Windows Repair, but given all the other issues,, reinstall Windows. 2--Don't understand "copy my hard drive and then reinstall Windows". 3--If you reinstall Windows, all will be new. 4--True, copy all DATA files, pics, etc. to flash drive, prior to install. |

Solve : Memory read/write failure? |
Answer» Hello CH,
I have taken apart the laptop and have found no obvious signs of damage, etc. Any ideas what the issue could be? Thanks, Diatech P.S. There are no audible beep codes coinsiding with the error, and I only have one DIMM installed.Damage may be invisible to the NAKED eye. If you have tried 2 different RAM modules and you are getting the same MESSAGE, it is possible that the motherboard itself is faulty. You could take it to a repair company and get an estimate of the likely repair bill but you may feel you should consider how much you want to spend on a laptop which is not new (it was being reviewed in March 2006). If it has files you need you can remove the disk and put it in a USB enclosure. |

Solve : replacement CMOS battery for laptop choice? |
Answer» I'd LIKE to replace the CMOS/RTC battery in my Compaq Presario F572US NOTEBOOK PC. I'm having some difficulty finding sources that list my specific MODEL, which is sometimes generally referred to as Presario F500. I found this battery on ebay which looks identical to mine but the ebay listing only mentions a few models, not including mine. But, since many of these laptop batteries simply contain the common CR2032 battery, I'm thinking this should work in my computer. Any comments appreciated. ...But, since many of these laptop batteries simply contain the common CR2032 battery,...The problem is...they don't. I've seen a few newer Dell laptops that use the CR2032, accessed through a door in the bottom just like RAM. The one you show in the link has a connector. It appears to be shrink-tubing around a coin cell. You'll have to open your notebook to see what's actually there. If that's all it is, you can make one from a CR-2032 socket & a battery that you know is good. The problem with these aftermarket batteries, is you have no way of knowing if the battery is good or not. I bought a bunch of CR-2032's, tested them on my ZTS battery tester & every one of them had less than 10% capacity, even though the VOLTAGE was good on all. Thanks for the reply, CC. Quote It appears to be shrink-tubing around a coin cell. What is a coin cell? Quote You'll have to open your notebook to see what's actually there.I have. That's why I said the picture in the ebay listing looks like my battery. Quote If that's all it is, you can make one from a CR-2032 socket & a battery that you know is good. How? Where can I get a CR-2032 socket? The battery is held in place with 2-sided tape. Would I be able to use tape with the socket you're talking about? And then, how do I get it connected to the wiring with the little connector? If you have a Batteries Plus near you I would give them a call. Since you are having a problem finding the battery I would be surprised if they have one in stock, but since they specialize in batteries of all kinds they might have the resources to be able to find one. You might need to speak with the manager.I do have a Batteries Plus store in my area. I may check with them on this. I suspect their price may discourage me from replacing and I'll just go on resetting time as needed. If I always leave the main battery in when the computer is off, that prevents the loss of time. But, if I run the computer off the AC adapter (battery out) and then turn it off and leave it that way ovenight, it will lose time. So, this is not a huge problem. It's just a minor annoyance that I'd fix if the solution were not too costly and the right battery COULD be found without spending a lot of time searching.
